Big weddings are out during the coronavirus pandemic, so Macedon Ranges newlyweds Fernada and Raymond DeMack found a new way to reach their 300-plus guest list on Saturday.

Chairs were empty as they said their vows at Sunbury Baptist Church but cameras captured and livestreamed every moment to friends and family.

All understood the significance of April 25, which marked the pair’s first date and link to the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross where Ray proposed months earlier.

In fact, the cross has drawn many lovers together including Ray’s own great-grandfather, one of the original builders of the cross, William DeMack and wife Daisy.

Ray’s mother Heather said the date was sentimental to the couple and they had huge support from friends and family.

“They felt the wedding was not about the party but about the commitment and what it means to each other,” she said.

“They wanted everyone there but of course they weren’t able to.”

Heather was one of the lucky five state-sanctioned wedding attendees on the day as well as Fern’s “adopted Australian father” who walked her down the aisle.

Ray’s family hails from Hesket, while Fern’s family, from Brazil, was unable to fly into the country due to pandemic restrictions.

Further celebrations are expected once COVID-19 restrictions lift.

$9.99 kg Malmsbury photographer Adam Brentnall has embarked on a project to document this never-before-experienced pandemic lockdown on his community.

Faced with the prospect of the majority of his work having been essentially wiped out due to social distancing rules and the number of people able to congregate in one place at one time, Adam was suddenly inspired to get to work on a new project that celebrated his hometown and its inhabitants in these changed circumstances.

"When a local couple in Malmsbury who had to been planning their wedding for over 12 months and who had previously booked us as their wedding photographers had no choice but to postpone,

they asked if we would come around and document their 'fake' wedding in their front yard," Adam told the Express.

"Of course we said yes and that's when we saw a way of still being able to work.

"This project was a way of adapting to the government mandates while keeping some momentum going, and in turn creating connections and giving back to our community."

Three men have been fined for attending a birthday party in Romsey and not adhering to stage three state government restrictions to stay home during the coronavirus pandemic.

They were among 661 spot checks at homes, businesses and non-essential services across the state as part of Operation Sentinel from Wednesday to Thursday last week. Police issued 54 similar fines in that 24-hour period.

A number of Australian radio stations have shut down their studios and live broadcasts to protect their personnel during coronavirus lockdown, but Castlemaine's Radio88fm for Seniors remains on air unchanged.

Radio88fm spokesperson Marilyn Bennet said the station remained on air 24/7.

"Stations with numerous people entering studios have a real risk problem. As we have a minimum of people in our studio there is no increase in risk," Ms Bennet said.

"Apart from an increase in news bulletins and COVID-19 virus information and warnings there are few changes.

"We have detected an increase in audience and we believe it is due to the portability of radio. People can stay informed without being stuck to a screen.

"It's feels a bit like in World War II when radio was so vital.

"We are also very pleased and grateful that our business supporters have stayed with us in these difficult times."

Don’t forget to check your monitoring traps for Queensland fruit fly (QFF), following the first confirmed report in Castlemaine.

QFF are small brown flies with yellow markings. Look out for grubs or larvae in fruit or vegetables, remove unwanted fruit from trees and pick up fallen fruit off the ground. Women's Health Loddon Mallee is one of 12 services to share in $3 million state government funds over the next two years to continue vital family violence prevention work.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said coronavirus had created an unprecedented global situation and in these uncertain times "prevention of family violence remains a critical priority".

"Women's Health Loddon Mallee do a great job of supporting vulnerable women and children in our community, and they are still here providing support in these challenging times," she said.

The continuation of funding will ensure the service can build on delivering critical training, advice and support to organisations in the region.

This investment includes $600,000 from the state's $59.4 million mental health package. It adds to the $40.2 million package for crisis accommodation and specialist services for people suffering or at risk of family violence.

Family violence is a national emergency, with one woman killed at the hands of a current or former partner every week. It is the leading cause of death, disability and illness in Victorian women aged 15 to 44 years.

Aged Care Services - Council is working hard to support the most vulnerable members of our community. We have made some alterations to services based on advice from health authorities, and are continuing to share service updates with clients, carers and families. Pet registrations Council is giving pet owners until 30 June to pay for pet registrations. Residents must still ensure their pet is registered.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) update

Bendigo Health has been given a major boost with 45 new hospital beds, as the state government bolsters the state's health system to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

Sixteen beds are already open, and the remaining beds are ready to open when they are needed. The new hospital also has built-in capacity for 20 additional intensive care beds if they are required in emergency situations.

The government's $1.9 billion health fund has allowed the state's hospitals to build more bed capacity and recommission buildings that are no longer used for healthcare.

When complete, the health system's surge capacity will be boosted by more than 700 beds across Victoria.

The investment also includes additional equipment for hospitals and funding for EDs and ICUs. The former Bendigo Health emergency department has also been converted into a dedicated screening clinic, testing about 40 people a day with capacity to scale up further if required.

A Macedon Ranges flower show has been the seed of inspiration for young green-thumb Bethany Thompson.

The nine-year-old scooped prizes in both senior and junior sections of this year's Mount Macedon Autumn Flower Show and dreams to open her own market garden and café.

The Newham youngster impressed judges to win Grand Champion Rose for her stunning Nahema, as well as Best Exhibit in Show and Best Children's Exhibit.

A regular entrant for the past four years along with her siblings, Bethany has taken inspiration from the displays and creative categories in the show, says her mother Jo. "The children get so much inspiration from what they see. It has really been from there that Bethany's interest grew," Jo says.

"We used to grow pumpkins but now a big section of our garden is taken up by plants chosen for their shape or colour to design. We order seeds based on their potential for the show."

Bethany has her own garden to care for at home, which she has filled with roses, snapdragons, pansies, jolly jumpups and strawberries.

She says she prefers an ordered, neat garden, "unlike bulbs that pop up everywhere".

"She works really hard in her garden, weeding and pruning, and she chooses to spend her pocket money on plants," Jo says.

"Her siblings love entering the show but Bethany's interest in gardening is ongoing."

Bethany's family, two grandmothers and great-grandmother all share a love of gardening and have helped to grow her interest. One also shares a special interest in roses.

Mondo Lounge is mixing things up with approved social distancing activities, including a virtual dance lesson!

People aged 12 to 25 years are invited to join a free online hip-hop dance class presented by Movement Zone's Sas Cook this Friday.

"We wanted to offer something that was a bit of fun, where we can get together in the virtual world, learn some dance moves and have a laugh at the same time," said council's youth activities officer Jodie Hearn.

"We're all doing our best to navigate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, so anything that brings a smile or helps us to learn something new is a bonus."

Kinder upgrade Construction on a $668,435 upgrade to Trentham Kindergarten commenced last week.

The project is to upgrade the existing kindergarten to improve the quality of the learning environment, and provide access for children of all abilities to three and fouryear-old kindergarten.

It will provide additional long daycare places that are integrated with kinder as well as providing facilities to meet future demand for kinder and other early childhood services.

The state government provided $305,000 to the project as part of the 201819 Children's Facilities Capital Program Major Grants, while Hepburn Shire Council has contributed $363,435 towards the centre.

Construction is expected to finish in July.

A message from BIG4 Castlemaine Gardens Holiday Park

Speeding, drug driving, not at home An intercept of a speeding motorist on the Calder Freeway at Woodend last Thursday proved anything but routine for Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol officers.

A 39-year-old woman from Epsom was pulled over about 10.30am after being clocked travelling at 130km/h in the 110km/h zone. She underwent standard alcohol and drug testing and returned a positive result for an illicit drug.

During a search of the woman's vehicle the officers located and seized a small amount of illicit drugs. She was arrested and taken to Kyneton Police Station for questioning and later released pending summons.

The woman is facing charges of speeding, drug driving and drug possession and will also be charged with breaching COVID-19 regulations.

Council meetings take virtual form

Legislation has passed that enables local council meetings to be conducted electronically.

The Victorian Parliament sat last Thursday to pass the COVID-19 Omnibus (Emergency Measures) Bill 2020 which provides several temporary legislative amendments.

The move comes more than one month after councils like Mount Alexander and Macedon Ranges suspended meetings to meet government social distancing requirements during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Municipal Association of Victoria President, Cr Coral Ross, said the "common-sense decision" enabled councillors to fulfil their mandated role without compromising their own, their colleagues' or the community's health and safety.

"This change enables councils to meet and make decisions on important issues, including organisational, economic and community resilience and recovery from COVID-19," Cr Ross said.

Meetings will be livestreamed on council websites while special committees have the option to livestream or post a recording to the council website after their meeting.

Meetings scheduled for Mount Alexander and Macedon Ranges are listed on each council's website.

Tidy Towns shoutout A tidy cash sum is up for grabs as the Sustainable Communities - Tidy Town Awards launch for 2020.

The initiative rewards the individuals, community groups, educational institutions, businesses and councils whose actions have helped improve, empower and build resilience in their local communities.

Winning entries from previous years have ranged from the creation of a pre-school children's garden to the successful treatment of waste-water from milk tanks and storage silos.

They have also included creating a venue for the homeless to shower and wash their clothes and bedding, and a community-led campaign designed to achieve zero net emissions by 2030.

Categories this year include: education, energy, litter, waste, environment, indigenous culture, heritage and culture, community, social wellbeing and young legends.

There is also the chance for towns to win the overall Sustainable Community of the Year award and for individuals to win the Dame Phyllis Frost award for particularly outstanding community contributions.

A $1000 grant will go to a promising new project seen worthy of supporting and getting off the ground.

A long journey

The church bell is ringing again at St Paul's Kyneton each day at 6pm, following a five-minute time to pause, reflect and for those want, to pray.

This Kyneton initiative is called Prayers@5.55 and invites communities around our region for five minutes of prayer each day at 5.55pm.

"Pray wherever you are regarding the COVID-19 crisis as it affects the lives and livelihoods of our communities and the world; for all who have COVID-19 and their families and all who mourn the tragic loss of beloved family and friends," Fr Ian Howarth said.

"Pray for people who find themselves out of work and for wholeness, wellbeing, Fr Ian Howarth rings the bell at St Paul’s mental and physical health of all people."

Unfortunately the lot of this kind of carer, who is on duty 24 hours per day, is bleak. Professionals continuously tell you to "take care of yourself" but no one has the recipe for how you can do this.

Life as it was disappears, you have to stop working, social events become difficult, more and more a carer is isolated and under such constant strain that their physical and mental health is compromised. None of this could Neil realise.

There was no time for contemplation when he was up all night and running after Mary all day. Like most carers, Neil had no idea how drastic the situation was and how lost he was. Like most Carers, someone from outside, family or GP has to bring pressure to bear to make you realise you cannot keep doing this. There does come a time when only professionals are capable of looking after dementia sufferers.

Mary became a full-time resident at RM Begg in Kyneton. She soon lost the ability to speak and although she stares hard into Neil's face, it is not clear if she knows who he is. Neil continues caring for Mary, he still goes every day to feed Mary. She has been in the home for six years now. Her dementia continues to advance. Dementia is a terminal illness, you will never get better. Neil is with Mary on this journey. It is an incredibly long and intense journey. Although Mary is cared for, Neil continues to experience every change in her condition. His stress never really abates. Neil is a carer. Who cares for the carers?

Woodend Lifestyle and Carers Group is a group of people who have travelled the dementia path with a loved one.

They know how lonely this path can be and how it is hard to recognise that you need help, especially at the early part of the journey.

They have published their stories in the hope that there may be some recognition by others and that they may reach out for assistance.

Although there are many common threads not every journey is the same. Not all dementia sufferers become violent, not all wander but some do and if that is something being dealt with, it is hoped people would know they are not alone.

'Alone' is what many carers feel. Some people with dementia are quiet and gentle but many exhibit unusual behaviours.

These are the people who need the most help. Dementia is a terminal disease. It is no fault of any person who contracts it but it is a hard road and if anyone recognises anything in these articles, WLCG is there to assist.

NEIL'S STORY Neil Pomroy was one of the founding members of WLCG. He continues to work hard in the group, supporting newcomers, raising funds and receiving the much-needed support and love required to go on.

Neil and his wife Mary moved from Essendon to Newham in the mid 1970s in order to bring up their two daughters in a country setting. Neil was a panel beater/ mechanic and Mary was a primary school teacher's aide. They both worked at fitting in, Neil joined the local CFA, and they became very active members of the community. Life was good.

Around 2006, Neil and his daughters Wendy and Michelle could see something was not quite right with Mary. No one could quite put their fingers on it but Mary was not the same. Her school suggested she have her long service leave as time off. The break did not help. Mary continued forgetting vital things, having fainting episodes, pacing their home, wandering off and just being generally distracted. Mary was only in her late 50s so dementia never entered anyone's mind.

It took two full years of trapsing from specialist to specialist before Mary was diagnosed with frontal temporal dementia. Neil was forced to give up work. Mary required constant care. Together they embarked on a confusing and frustrating journey to navigate a disjointed and underresourced health and aged-care system.

Dementia care falls between many cracks. It is not considered to be a mental health issue, nor is it an acute illness.

When Mary stopped sleeping, got up every night and wandered the house switching on lights or managed to negotiate the door locks and wander off, Neil did not know where he could turn for help. It was virtually impossible to find time to look for help as

Yes, Take care when burning off we can!

Now that fire restrictions have been lifted the CFA has urged residents to take extreme care when burning off.

CFA Commander Chris Jacobsen reminded people to register their burn off and check the local conditions on the day.

"Even if you have registered your burn, conditions can change quickly and fires can get out of control within minutes in dry and windy conditions," Mr Jacobson said.

It is important to register burns via the Burn Off Notification Line on 1800 668 511 to inform local emergency services and reduce unnecessary brigade callouts.

It is also important to note, a landowner/occupier can leave a vegetation burn off if they have a cleared a three-metre fire break and have notified their neighbours two hours before burning.

"It's the resident's responsibility to ensure that a burn off does not get out of control. If this does happen, you should

Neighbours face drugs charges

During these difficult times...

Three men were arrested in Kyneton last Thursday morning after police executed warrants simultaneously at three neighbouring houses in the one street.

Detectives from the Macedon Ranges Crime Investigation Unit searched the homes in Menzies Close and discovered a large amount of drugs at two of the addresses, while no arrests resulted from the third address.

Three men aged in their 30 and 40s will be attending Kyneton Magistrates Court at a future date.

Mount Macedon's iconic Memorial Cross Reserve is to undergo a major renovation thanks to a $50,000 state government grant.

The reserve is a major attraction in the region and has a long history of community use, although an increase in visitor numbers has put pressure on its environment and infrastructure.

The funding will go towards a detailed heritage analysis to preserve and enhance the site's commemorative features.

It will also ensure more stories of local World War II veterans can be depicted at the site, in recognition of the 75th anniversary of the end of the war this year.

Another day and another speed camera car lurking on the COVID-19 quiet Maldon Road.

These entrepreneurs are more often seen at the bottom of hills and dips in the wide streets of Castlemaine where a speed of less than 55km/h can extract more than $200 from normally law abiding and conscientious safe drivers.

We never see them at the Fogartys Gap Road intersection on the Calder Freeway where people have died quite recently and where often drivers fail to heed the 80km/h speed limit. To paraphrase a sentence from the Bible, if we are to know the TAC 'by their fruits', the climbing death toll tells us all we need to know about a campaign that puts revenue ahead of safety and prejudice about drug use ahead of science. We can only hope the Andrews Government reviews this ham-fisted and incompetent effort as soon as the current community health crisis is over, otherwise the delusional 'Towards Zero' campaign will continue to contribute to a climbing death toll on our roads.

I notice that some people are comparing the present COVID-19 deprivations and circumstances to the Depression of the 1930s.

This surprises me.

There can be no comparison of the situation of people today with many of those who lived through that awful time.

My parents' experience may be more extreme that a lot of others but there are many unhappy stories. Briefly, my father lost his job in 1931 and found it impossible to find another. Soon my mother and he were forced to surrender their children to the Child Welfare Authority and they were placed in the Ballarat Orphanage.

The couple were then evicted from their home for non-payment of rent. They sold their furniture for a pittance and were taken in by my mother's sister and husband.

Health support continues

Mount Alexander medical services with washable gowns, the maternal and child health nurses are wearing brightly covered gowns during all consultations.

They chose bold prints to engage and entertain the children they see.

While face-to-face sessions like new parent groups are on hold, the maternal and child health team will be supporting the new parent group via an online platform. The group is open to all first time parents and carers with babies born after December 18, 2019. Staff will be contacting all eligible families.

“Being a new parent or carer comes with many challenges at any time so we’re using online video conferencing to connect new parents, build parental confidence and answer any questions to help alleviate stress or concerns at this time,” said Lisa Knight, council’s director corporate and community services.

Council is encouraging parents and carers to phone 5472 1364 to make an appointment before visiting or to speak to a nurse.

Staff are also contacting clients to advise any service changes and Maternal and Child Health nurse Claire in the colourful confirm appointments. new washable gowns that are worn over PPE.

The Department of Health and Human Services has selected Benetas to deliver the Home and Community Care Program for Younger People in Macedon Ranges Shire from July 1.

Macedon Ranges Council will work collaboratively with Benetas and DHHS to transition 19 clients across to the new provider as smoothly as possible. Council decided to exit providing HACCPYP services in August last year. CEO Margot Stork said despite the change it would be business as usual in terms of delivery of services to HACCPYP clients.

“Clients and families will continue to receive individualised support during the transition process,” Ms Stork said.

“DHHS selected Benetas through an established process that protects the interests of clients.

“Benetas has a strong history in providing home care services and shares council’s commitment to putting clients at the centre of service delivery.”

Ms Stork said council decided to exit the contract after extensive reform in the aged care and disability sectors.

“HACCPYP provides service to a small number of people in a regulated environment,” Ms Stork said “With other agencies delivering this service locally, we are better placed to invest in council’s other health and wellbeing priorities including social connection, improving infrastructure and attracting more services to the shire.”

Mount Alexander Shire Council is continuing to deliver essential maternal and child health services during the coronavirus pandemic, with changes in place to keep families and staff safe, and an online support group to connect new parents.

Limited face-to-face consultations by appointment are taking place but most consultations and key age stage visits are happening over the phone.

Maternal and child health nurses are also providing immunisations for children by appointment, as part of the National Immunisation Program. Limited stock is also available for influenza vaccines for children from six months to five years.

Additional precautions in place include: - All visits to the centre are via appointment only.

- Only one parent or carer may enter the centre with their child - Parents, carers or children must not enter if they are unwell or live with someone who is unwell.

Remember that your soil is really important, feed it up with a good quality compost.

Mary Wollmering of the Garden Tap nursery says it is also time to plant your tulips and you can squeeze in some daffodils if you haven’t planted those yet.

“Be sure to collect all that lovely leaf litter, run the lawn mower over it, it will be your best soil compost for next year,” Mary says.

“We had Easter Eggs, but the plants didn’t, and they are doing ISO as well, so give them a feed, they will love you for it.

“Now off to the rose garden, dead heading may give you a late flush.

“Vegetables.... seedlings are scarce as hens’ teeth right now, however it is time to sow your chervil, dill, parsley seeds, whoops don’t forget the chives.

“So my fellow gardeners, enjoy your garden, continue to get ‘those’ projects done in this imposed time of life at a slower pace.”

“The best time to plant a fruit tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now,” says Katie Finlay, co-owner of Carr’s Organic Fruit Tree Nursery.

“If you’d like to see more abundance in your garden in a few years, now is the time to be getting ready to plant some fruit trees in your garden.”

Katie and her business partner Sas Allardice grow certified organic fruit trees in their nursery in Harcourt under the mentorship of Katie’s dad Merv Carr.

The nursery is a member of the Harcourt Organic Farming Co-op.

Katie says, in the strange new world we’re occupying, it’s suddenly become obvious just how quickly our usual access to food can change.

While fresh food has continued to be available throughout the COVID-19 lockdown, she says the way we shop - and the way we live - has changed rapidly.

This has led to huge numbers of people turning to their own backyard to provide more food security and a rush to plant vegetable gardens and fruit trees.

Carr’s Organic Fruit Tree Nursery experienced a similar rush on their organic fruit trees as soon as it opened its 2020 catalogue for orders. Now staff want to reassure people there are still plenty of trees available.

“We’ve got a particularly good range of cherries and apples this year,” Katie said this week, “and we want everyone to know there are still heaps available. We’ve also got plums, peaches, nectarines and pears.”

Carr’s Organic Fruit Tree Nursery is a certified organic nursery and the other thing that sets them apart is their wide range of heritage and hard-to-find varieties like Bramley, Cox’s Orange Pippin, Jonathan and Golden Delicious, plus rare varieties like Bess Pool, Democrat and King David.

Co-owner of the nursery, Sas Allardice, says “unfortunately all apricots, multi-graft trees and fruit salad trees have been really popular and have sold out already.”

“But the nice thing about running a nursery is that next year’s trees are already grafted and growing in the nursery, so at least we can tell people there’ll be an even bigger range of all these trees available next season.”

A new feature in the nursery this year is introduction of a range of advanced trees, which are two year old trees that have already been pruned into a mature vaseshaped tree.

“Some of these trees are ready to start producing fruit next year,” Sas says.

“At the other end of the scale, we’ve also introduced a range of small trees, which are a good value way to get hold of what will become a full-sized tree, at a bargain price. For people with reduced space, we’ve also got some dwarf apple trees that will only grow into half-sized trees. They’re a great option for small backyards, or even growing in large pots.”

Trees can be pre-ordered up until June 30.

Food Technology at home

by Belinda Kime, Teacher, Food Technology 1 During the school holidays I spent a lot of time thinking about how to make Food Technology interesting online.

How do you have a practical based subject online?

Would it all be theory? Could students cook at home with their families? How could we share our overall cooking experiences such as our successes and fails, the sensory properties of our dishes such as the tastes, textures and appearances?

Over the next few days, the answers came to me through the students. I had some students homework (which had not been submitted due to the Term 1 early school closure) placed in my letterbox with some homemade biscuits by a Year 7 student (Lachlan H), an unexpected email from a Year 9 student (Hunter C) ”Hey Ms Kime, I made the risotto from the school cook book tonight and the family loved it, thanks for the recipe. I also made a carrot cake with lemon frosting and it looks great” and then another email from Ryan K (Year 7) “Hi Mrs Kime, I was wondering if I could cook dinner for my family as Food Tech” Then the lightbulb moment came. Give the students the option to cook if they can...and they did.

Year 7 & 8 Food Technology Last week students had a theory based component finishing a food safety assessment task. Those who could cook were given an Easter egg muffin recipe and also ideas on how to modify it (just in case they didn't have any Easter Eggs left). We had lots of variations including jam donut muffins, choc chip and Cherry Ripe.

Then the lovely photos and comments started coming in. This week we will be looking at the history of ANZAC biscuits and students will be given a recipe to try with their family if they can.

Year 9 Food Technology Students are investigating the pantry staples that we commonly have at home such as rice, pasta, flour (biscuits, cakes, bread) and the variety of dishes can be made with these basic ingredients. Each week students will be given a topic and will investigate recipes, justify their selection, consider the safety and hygiene aspect for their choice and complete an evaluation. This week we focussed on Smoothies. We had discussions about ingredients and family feedback via Zoom as well as a collaborative google slide where we shared images of the finished products.

Things you can do to break the monotony

By Olivia C, Yr 10 Ah, yes… boredom. There are many synonyms for it, trust me, I googled them out of “irksomeness”. So here are some things to try to break the monotony.

Read. If you’re a fan of libraries or just a bookworm (or both), then you might have been reading WAY before the pandemic. If not, then look for something to read! Whether that be an e-book, an audiobook or a paperback book, the choice is yours!

Bake. Of course everyone’s turning to cooking and baking, it’s fun and you get to eat what you make! So double treat! If you’re looking for a recipe to try google Aldi the recipe for a Chocolate Hazelnut Semifreddo – it looks really delicious.

Paint/sew/draw. When there was news of going into isolation, I had the weird idea to start a folder of drawings done while stuck inside. So why not try developing your creativity, whatever your skill level you can always be artistic!

Try the ‘Thesaurus activity’. Yes, I have created a very odd way of having fun. If you have a thesaurus around, try this. Hold it upright in your lap, close your eyes and let your finger skim over the pages. Open to a specific page, close your eyes again, and move your finger over the words. Stop and see what word you land on.

You can be surprised by what word you come across! Sure, this can also be done with a dictionary, which may be just as funny.

Find a new hobby. Humans have created way too many things to do to beat boredom, so try to find something new to do. It could be completing puzzles, nail art, graphic design… there’s a lot of ideas, explore!

ANZAC Day As we were unable to hold our usual ANZAC Day Assembly and Service this year, a commemorative Powerpoint was prepared and shared with all students. The presentation featured reflections by our College Captains, a performance of the Last Post and Reveille by Harrison G (Year 10) .

The SHC Virtual Talent Quest is on its way! Aimed at providing a little light relief while everyone is home, students will be able to record their entry and then perform once school returns. More details to come in our May edition.

The by-law was made using a model by-law issued by the Minister for Water on 9 October 2012.

The title of the by-law is By-law No. 13 – Recreational Areas.

Kyneton District Soccer Club's players, coaches and supporters are hoping that the 2020 season will still go ahead in some form.

At present Football Federation Australia and Football Victoria have imposed an across-the-board suspension of football activities until May 31, due to health and wellbeing concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.

There was an optimistic outlook for Kyneton's season on February 22, as about 400 people attending the successful family day at Barkly Square.

The club has 14 teams ready to go, ranging from Under 5s through to senior men's and women's lineups.

It's a case of long-awaited new lights, new sponsors, increased participation, and new playing kits -- all heading in the right direction before the pandemic arrived, leading to understandable frustrations.

The six new light towers are a far cry from back in 1978, when the first lights at Barkly Square were carried out and bolted to the surrounding fence, with a power lead back to the clubrooms.

There's no doubt the club would like to be back on the park sooner rather than later this year, but recognises the need to 'Be Safe' and adhere to government and health authority's concerns.

The FFV says its intention is to operate the 2020 NPL and community seasons in some form.

As the largest participation sport in the state, football (soccer) is the glue that holds many communities together," FV executive officer Peter Filopolous said.

Meanwhile, to keep players and members interested during the no-soccer limbo, Kyneton has been promoting Skills at Home videos, and Down Memory Lane flashbacks of photographs and videos highlighting some of the club's former glories on the field.

A spokesperson said the club was working with Macedon Ranges Shire Council towards having the playing surfaces upgraded.

On a positive note, everything is in place to return to training once the go-ahead is given.

The club has worked very hard to secure new sponsors, including Macedon Ranges Self Storage, Piper Street Food Co., Kyneton Dry Cleaners, RT Edgar, Kyneton on Riverside, Springs Medical Centre, Fulton Hogan, Atlantic Oil, Macedon Ranges Signs, and Lisa Chesters -- Member for Bendigo.

Happy earner too quick Bill West

Reine Happy is the type of galloper trainers and owners would be pleased to be associated with, with earnings of $182,400 from 52 starts.

'Happy' is one of the more popular horses in Kyneton trainer George Osborne's stables, and he produced his best to lead from go to whoa at Bendigo last Wednesday.

The eight-year-old went straight to the front for apprentice Kiran Quilty in the benchmark 64 over 1300m, and never looked like being beaten.

Teenager Quilty had only two winners to her credit, both times beating the Osbornetrained Celevitate, so the Kyneton trainer engaged her to ride Reine Happy to utilise a 4kg claim.

Osborne purchased Reine Happy for $8000 at the Adelaide yearling sales in 2013, and the large group of owners have now seen a strike rate of 11 wins and 11 placings. Wins have ranged from 1000m to 1300m, the majority on good tracks.

Not the easiest horse to train, Reine Happy shows his best when drawn wide or out in front; Quilty made sure he burnt off the opposition to win by two lengths at odds of $25.

Sutton Grange trainer Brent Stanley was pleased with the way filly Monetizing won a 1000m Maiden at her fifth race start.

An odds-on favourite, Monetizing has shown Stanley plenty of ability and he feels she is now a more mature galloper than earlier.

TWO IN A ROW Kyneton trainer Sue Naylor made it two wins in a row with Sangria when she won narrowly at Kilmore last week.

The four-year-old mare was ridden in the 1450m benchmark 58 event by Declan Bates, having previously broke her maiden status at Ballarat on April 6.

Sangria's two impressive runs have followed a lengthy spell of nearly six months.

It was a busy time at the Kyneton racecourse last Monday, with 16 jump outs being conducted.

WOODEND CUP TO RAPTURES Heavy rain on February 1 meant the 2020 Massey Ferguson Woodend Cup at Kyneton racecourse was not run, with the meeting washed out after several races had taken place.

The postponed $20,000 Cup took place at last Friday week's meeting, and was won by a three-year-old filly from one of the strongest stables in the land.

Raptures, owned by Strawberry Hill Stud (manager John Singleton), started as a $3.30 favourite in the 1850m event, and with veteran jockey Noel Callow aboard, finished too strongly to win by a length.

Mutanaaseg was runner-up, and Kazoom ran on for third in a field of 11.

A nine-year-old, Kazoom is a recent addition to the George Osborne stable at Kyneton, with stakes of nearly $200,000 from 77 starts.

Raptures, by Fastnet Rock from Absolute Joy (NZ) was having her eighth start, and is prepared by David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig at Euroa.

Farewell to a true gentleman

David Clements, a true gentleman who contributed much to bowls in Central Highlands over a long period, died on Friday after a lengthy illness, with many tributes flowing in.

"We remember David's love of bowls, and his love of the Macedon Bowling Club, the CHBA and then later the CHBD," stated division and Macedon club secretary Ian Guymer.

This is a strange time for all of us. Facing a global health pandemic is something I never imagined. By now, we all know the drill. Hand washing, physical distancing, stay at home only four reasons to go out.

It’s important to stay connected at this time.

Many of us can talk with family and friends via phone, text and online, or write an oldfashioned letter. It’s been good to see our community rise to the challenges of social distancing. Neighbours checking on each other, dropping off home cooked meals, writing notes and sharing advice.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic update Council response to pandemic

Council has a key role to play in reducing the impact of the coronavirus pandemic in Mount Alexander Shire. We are committed to supporting the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) as the lead agency responsible for responding to the COVID-19 outbreak.

We have activated our regional pandemic and business continuity plans to ensure we continue to deliver services with a focus on the health of our community, staff and volunteers. We’ve set up a local working group including community and health organisations, business networks and emergency services to coordinate our response, relief and recovery efforts.

With a number of coronavirus cases reported in the shire, we urge everyone to continue to follow the restrictions and ‘stay home’ to give ourselves and our community the best chance of stopping the spread.

Interim relief measures

Council announced some relief measures in March to help reduce some of the financial pressures: • One month extension on the due date for the fourth rates instalment.

• Establishment of a Council COVID-19 financial hardship policy.

• Temporary hold on following up unpaid animal registrations until 30 June.

• Payment to suppliers as quickly as possible in weekly payment schedules.

• A reduction of commercial rents in Councilowned buildings until 30 June, for businesses significantly impacted by COVID-19.

Support local business + creatives

COVID-19 has changed the way we work and play. We have been working with businesses, community groups and food markets to meet new public health standards, and keep our local food supply and economy going. We’ve been checking in on creatives, event organisers and accommodation providers who have been hit hard, and are working in partnership with our creative workforce on a collaborative, online platform to help keep us culturally connected and support e-commerce opportunities.

It’s important to celebrate the small things and find solutions that enable us to thrive, not just survive. Now more than ever we need everyone to buy local to keep every dollar in our shire.

Some things you can do are: think local before ordering goods online, source essential items from your local butcher, grocer, supermarket or farmers market, buy a gift voucher for future use, order take away from a local café, pub or restaurant, leave a tip, or share a positive review online.

Community pantry provides food aid

Local volunteers, community groups and organisations have established a community pantry to provide food relief for local residents in need. The Mount Alexander Community Pantry is a centrally coordinated food relief system. It offers prepared meals and food packages in the absence of a local foodbank.

The pantry is accepting financial donations to help fund the initiative. These are being managed by Castlemaine Community House.

Family violence and staying safe

While the doors to the Civic Centre may be closed, we’re running business as usual where possible. Our Customer Service Team is taking calls and staff are responding to service requests. We’ve also set up a dedicated COVID-19 telephone number and email address so please get in touch if you have any questions about services or support you need at this time.

Staff are delivering essential services like immunisations, meals on wheels and supporting our most vulnerable clients. Bin collection, planning services and road maintenance continues. The Works Unit is grading roads after much needed rain, and you’ll see the Parks and Gardens Team out as you enjoy your daily exercise.

We know it’s been a difficult time and have announced some measures to provide some financial relief. We’ve also put a hold on our 2020/2021 budget so we can review our priorities and explore how we can best support our community and local businesses in response to COVID-19.

We’re part of a creative, innovative and connected community and the inspirational work here never ceases to amaze me. It was remarkable to see a local food pantry set up by volunteers and community organisations to provide much needed food relief for residents in need.
