Paddock talks continue Macedon Ranges Shire Council will continue negotiations with the state government to sell Hanging Rock’s East Paddock despite one councillor’s push to abandon the prospect.

Cr Geoff Neil last week questioned the council’s need to sell the land associated with the “icon that’s very close to residents’ hearts”.

“To be truthfully honest I haven’t come across a coherent answer to that question, but when I ask why we shouldn’t we sell, there are so many points,” he said. “This is probably one of our biggest issues.”

The state government expressed interest in purchasing the East Paddock back in 2018 but since then has failed to reach an agreement with the council on the land’s value. Mayor Jennifer Anderson last week revealed the East Paddock had been valued at $3.065 million (excl. GST) in October last year.

The council rejected an offer made by the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning in May, which it described as “significantly below” its own valuation of the land. It’s offer will remain confidential.

A report to the council last week stated the main difference in the valuations came down to site improvements. DELWP had not included the improvements in its figure despite arguments the works bettered recreational use of the site as a concert venue and location for public events.

Last week Cr Neil argued the council’s site enhancements had supported the council’s tourism and business strategies while boosting the local economy.

He said undertaking public consultation to determine the community’s level of support for the sale would be meaningless if the council had already reached an agreement.

“The fact is, once you’ve negotiated a price with the government and then go to the people, all you’re doing is advertising

Cr Janet Pearce disagreed, arguing it would not lock council in to selling the site.

“This is the start of a process in which community consultation will give us more information on this to ultimately make the decision,” Cr Janet Pearce said.

“If we found that 80 per cent of feedback was ‘don’t sell the East Paddock’, of course, then we can make considered decisions on that,” she said.

Cr Anderson said she was opposed the motion that locked the council into one view without a full understanding of all views in the community.

“I think there are many different opinions about the future of Hanging Rock and the East Paddock: the management, the ownership and what should happen there. This is not about a personal opinion here, it’s about ensuring the community has a say,” Cr Anderson said.

“I haven’t met a single person that does not want Hanging Rock and the East Paddock to be an amazingly beautiful place of environmental significance and tourist destination. Everybody, I think, has a passion for the Rock here at Macedon Ranges.”

Councillors voted 7-2 to continue negotiations on the sale of the East Paddock with the state government.

Woodend to welcome IGA Angela Crawford Woodend's Coles supermarket will have competition for the first time next year with a new tenant for its former site in Woodend's 19th Hole Shopping Centre now revealed.

Marks Group will open an IGA supermarket in 1400 square metres of space and will relocate their current Cellarbrations liquor store to the site.

Managing director Bradley Marks said

an extensive renovation would be undertaken.

"We're working through the process of finding out what would work best for Woodend and surrounding villages," he said.

"We believe something with a boutique offering will be welcomed, featuring local produce and fresh fish, and we're looking at a juice bar concept and a sushi station."

Mr Marks said they were still in the planning stages but would provide more detail about how the store would look in late

January.

"We had a meeting onsite with the IGA team earlier (last) week to nut out design processes and will be working to plan out the store," he said.

"We'll have a 300-square-metre liquor shop and 1100 square metres of groceries.

"It's about a 10-week build for the store and we're hoping to open in June of 2021."

The company plans to increase its local workforce and will advertise for staff next year.

Subdivision approved Amy Hume A 42-lot subdivision for Edgecombe Road has become the first part of a major three-stage development proposed for Kyneton to gain approval.

Macedon Ranges Council last week voted 6-3 in favour of the permit, which subdivides four lots of land long marked for commercial development and rural living.

The subdivision is the beginning of a larger proposed development that will include a major hardware retailer and fuel station with fast-food restaurant.

The application has attracted significant community interest for its promise of economic growth but some claimed the developer's plan lacked detail to ensure its proper fit for the town.

Ten formal objections raised the impact on native flora and fauna, increased traffic, road and pedestrian safety, character, noise and light emission.

Councillor Mark Ridgeway suggested to councillors at Wednesday's meeting they risked losing the chance to reflect the community's desires in the plan if not for extensive planning conditions.

"If it had to go to the umpire, I think the umpire would be pretty straight about calling it," he said.

"Here's an opportunity for us to be part of that conversation or on the other hand we can choose not to be part of that conversation and let it be decided out of our hands."

Cr Ridgeway's successful motion added several further conditions to the plans, including wildlife-friendly fencing, sustainable and environmentally sensitive building designs and use of materials, landscaping plans for rural living development and traffic management plans.

Expand outdoor dining options Council invites hospitality businesses to apply for a permit to temporarily expand their outdoor dining options. The free permit enables venues to increase patron numbers while meeting COVID-19 restrictions. This may include outdoor dining on the footpath, or on-street parking spaces in front of your business or neighbouring properties, in laneways or public areas. "This ensures good traffic management particularly with key intersections is integral to the design and development of the proposal and we've seen what happens, in Woodend (at Coles) recently, when perhaps that doesn't occur from the start of the process," he said.

Another key inclusion was public open space with improvements to biodiversity along Post Office Creek and car parking from Pipers Creek Road.

The move recognises and preserves the cultural heritage of the area where several Indigenous artifacts have been found. The permit included more than 60 detailed conditions recommended by council officers.

Cr Ridgeway also called for councillors to be notified of any future residential and commercial planning applications relating to the development.

While the motion gained majority support, not all were convinced approval of the subdivision alone was the best outcome for the site.

Councillors Anne Moore and Jennifer Anderson wanted greater certainty on the site's end built-form.

"We are setting the ground rules for where this built-form will occur and so, for me, the two (applications) together makes more sense," Cr Anderson said.

"I just don't feel that I have enough information there for me to feel comfortable with this permit."

Councillors voted in favour of the application with added conditions. A division recorded those in favour were Crs Ridgeway, West, Pearce, Death, Neil and Bonanno. Those against were Crs Anderson, Moore and Guthrie.

Councillors are expected to vote on the remaining two applications for the Edgecombe Road development in the first half of 2021.

Climate emergency call closer?

Update on Eagles Road bridge in Harcourt

Macedon Ranges could soon join a throng of local councils in declaring a climate emergency.

Councillors will put it to vote at their March 2021 meeting following their unanimous decision last week for the acting CEO to prepare a formal report into the move.

The report will include advice on necessary resources to implement, how such a declaration would sit with the council's current policy platform and any adjustments that would need to be made to policy and strategic priorities.

Council is undertaking works to replace the bridge on Eagles Road in Harcourt. Due to unexpected delays in relation to the piling, the works are now expected to be completed by the end of January 2021. The bridge will remain closed to traffic until the works are complete. Council apologises for any inconvenience.

Maldon-Lockwood Road crossing upgrade V/Line, on behalf of the Department of Transport, and Victorian Goldfields Railway (VGR) are working to upgrade and improve safety at the level crossing at Maldon-Lockwood Road in Maldon. Maldon's former 'Porcupine Township' Pioneer Settlement has sold to a Victorian buyer for an undisclosed sum.

The unique 15-acre property offers visitor accommodation and a glimpse into our colonial past.

The 1850s-themed attraction was created by Peter and Cristina Mitz back in the early 1990s and opened to the public in 1992. It ran very successfully for many years but has been closed to the public for about 13 years.

Real estate agent Ed Carthew said there was unprecedented interest in the property.

"We received more than 250 enquiries from all over Australia and showed more than 20 groups through the property," he said.

"We had Indigenous groups, photographic groups, health and fitness and school groups."

The property features a main residence, seven motel rooms, a separate manager's residence and a restaurant.

Mr Carthew said the buyer first planned to focus on bringing up the standard of the motel accommodation side of the property, to provide more accommodation options in the historic township.

"He also plans to work with Mount Alexander Shire Council to put the work in required to reopen the Porcupine Township attraction to the public," he said.

There is no timeframe on when this will happen.

"He eventually plans to work in with bus tour companies in Melbourne to bring day trippers to the region to enjoy the village and all that Maldon has to offer, just as the original owners did in the attraction's

Blues-roots legend Geoff Achison has been inducted to the Blues Music Victoria Hall of Fame.

Geoff Achison a blues ‘hall of famer’ Amy Hume Blues-roots legend Geoff Achison has helped put his hometown of Malmsbury on the map.

The guitarist and singer-songwriter has seen international success and more recently been inducted to the Blues Music Victoria Hall of Fame.

His new status recognises him as one of the significant contributors to blues music in Victoria and he was amazed to receive the honour with the likes of Phil Manning.

"I've been a young enthusiastic guitar geek and now I look at the music industry as an 'old codger'… but I wouldn't have put myself up there [with the greats] yet," he said.

"In my mind there's a hierarchy of great Australian musicians that have helped make our music what it is. It has a particular sound and flavour to it that comes from years of writing and producing original material."

There's no doubt Geoff's regional Victoria upbringing helped shape his music.

He was one of five children growing up in Malmsbury's old railway station with parents who adored music - his father a member of the Kyneton Municipal Brass Band.

When Geoff discovered a forgotten old guitar beneath the stairwell as a teen, his trumpet-playing father wasted no time in finding him a teacher.

He was 13 when he tested his talent with his father's dance band, and Geoff attracted the attention of eccentric local jazz musician Alan Watson who exposed him to a new world of jazz, improvisation and a stint playing bass guitar, although, it was blues that stole his heart.

"From the moment I heard the blues - that's

when I knew," Geoff said.

"It was a John Mayall song that he recorded in 1966 - a year after I was born. Within four bars of hearing that song I knew that's what I wanted to do."

Geoff moved to Melbourne where he met legendary Australian bluesman 'Dutch' Tilders in 1987 and established himself as a fine lead guitarist before striking out with his own.

He released his debut album in the early 90s and began touring throughout the USA, UK and Europe, but never forgot his roots.

"Travelling the US and going down south to venues and juke joints for the first time, I was super nervous," he said.

"But I soon discovered that, to others, the fact that I am from a little town in regional Australia and playing blues guitar? They think it's exotic, they think it's exciting."

Malmsbury is where his parents still reside and Geoff says it's "still the home of [his] heart".

Upon his return to Melbourne, Geoff was able to recruit an all-star group that featured some of Australia's most celebrated musicians named The Souldiggers - "a tip of the hat to the Blue Breakers," Geoff said.

"We weren't trying to be the best or impress 'the right people' - we just wanted to make music that we enjoyed and that others could enjoy too," he said.

"I count myself as lucky that I have been able to continue doing something I enjoy."

Gigs are now beginning to return to Geoff's schedule after a coronavirus pause since mid-March. Fans may have seen the release of some new songs and videos during that time but they will get to experience an official relaunch at The Fyrefly in St Kilda on February 5.

Heroes of the halfpipe A nine-year-old skater and his friends have rallied more than 700 youth to call for improvements to Gisborne Skate Park.

Gisborne local Thomas Gilmour is seeking expansion including more challenging elements, a pump track, water taps and lighting to meet increased demand at the site.

He launched his campaign in October when he noticed a struggle for ramp time between new, young and experienced skaters.

"The skate park has been crowded and there's not really a space where younger kids can skate or ride away from the older experienced kids," he told the Express.

"We want to make the skate park safer for everyone to use and making these changes will help a lot."

Thomas has suggested making better use of the park's dirt track area behind the skate park, which he says is often unusable due to potholes and puddles.

"We're desperate for more skating and scooting space and the answer is right in front of us," he said.

"An upgraded and expanded park would offer more challenges and help all skill levels develop -

more challenges, more learning and more confidence."

He said lighting for the site would increase usage and improve safety.

Thomas rallied his friends and together they gained the support of 738 people including school students, principals, and teachers from numerous schools seeking skate park upgrades. A creative video highlighting the issues also helped their plight.

Significant community backing encouraged Thomas to approach South Ward councillor Dominic Bonanno for help, who was also his former football coach.

Cr Bonanno said he was impressed by the effort Thomas and fellow skaters had put into the request.

"It's great to hear from our youngest residents and they have set a great example," Cr Bonanno said.

"This is what I want to see more of - it tells us what is important to people in our community."

Macedon Ranges Shire Council voted last week to refer the request to the 2021/22 Council Budget process for consideration.

Church hall permit refused Lisa Dennis Mount Alexander Shire Council has refused a planning permit for a large church hall development at 83-85 Blakeley Road, Castlemaine.

The application by the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church featured a church hall that would have the capacity to seat 860 people and a 160-space car park.

Council officers had recommended that council approve the planning permit in line with a long list of conditions.

However, Cr Rosie Annear moved an alternate motion to refuse the application outlining concerns about the scale and use being out of character within the context of the site and surrounds.

Cr Annear said she had received an overwhelming number of objections to the proposal.

"I and many other councillors received an inundation of objections from residents with concerns about the development. I counted 58 in the last two days alone," she said.

"Concerns surround the size, scale and capacity of the development, environmental and wildlife concerns, traffic concerns, size and location of the proposed car park, increased risk to pedestrians and cyclists, light spill, emergency access and bushfire risk concerns," she said.

"In my opinion the size, scale and capacity exceeds the purpose of the Low Density Residential Zone and would significantly affect the rural residential character of the area. Also the increased traffic on Blakeley Road and particularly on Saw Mill Road would lead to increased traffic hazards in an area frequented by pedestrians and cyclists.

"I don't object to a church being built.

I respect the right of everyone to have a place of worship, but I don't think this is the right place for this proposed building to be built," Cr Annear said.

Cr Stephen Gardner seconded the motion and confirmed councillors had been inundated with emails about the proposal.

"I did want to make the point that a lot of them were just anti-Brethren. I had a conversation with someone that I found quite offensive and there is no place for that. These views are certainly not relevant in my consideration of the application," he said.

"For me it was residential amenity, the large car park, 400 to 1000 parishioners at an annual event, meetings at 5.30am in the morning. It is in a residential zone and this is a very large-scale building and it

doesn't fit in the surrounds.

"I have noted the hot rods and existing church are there but they are further up and the new development will be built directly opposite current housing. The wildlife corridor was also mentioned and issues around traffic would be quite a big problem. These are my reasons for supporting this notice of refusal," Cr Gardner said.

Cr Bill Maltby acknowledged and noted all the objections however he said some of the responses saddened him.

"As Cr Gardner said, many of the objections were attacking the religious views and practices of the applicant," he said.

"We deal with the planning issue. The building is too big and there are some traffic issues but quite seriously I thought we lived in a democratic society and some of

those objections were abhorrent.

"I will signal that I will be asking the director of infrastructure to look at the use of Saw Mill Road as this application has highlighted major traffic issues in that area," Cr Maltby said.

The motion was successfully carried in a unanimous vote.

Plymouth Brethren Christian Church member and Castlemaine local Steve Craig told the Express they were disappointed by the decision.

"We are disappointed with the outcome after having worked with the council planning team on a conforming plan, which they recommended to council for approval last Tuesday," he said.

"We are now working with our own planning team and considering our options."

Making memories for Ethan McCulloch Amy Hume Completing VCE, getting a driver's licence and travelling the world sound like any teenager's dream but for Gisborne's Ethan McCulloch they top a bucket list that he is determined to achieve.

Doctors have declared the bright 16-year-old "incurable" as he fights a rare aggressive cancer known as rhabdomyosarcoma, which forms in soft tissue.

His mother Cathie said Ethan's diagnosis last year had been hard on the whole family and the coronavirus pandemic had created unimagined challenges.

"It's affected us as a family a great deal and then with COVID it shut everyone out of our lives when we needed support the most. It's been an ongoing battle. We've had to be a very strong family," she said.

Ethan initially sought treatment for what he thought was a torn calf muscle but as the pain in his leg intensified one month on, an MRI revealed a large malignant tumour.

He was diagnosed with stage four rhabdomyosarcoma. Tumors had also spread to his lungs, abdomen, groin, knee, shoulder and wrist.

He underwent intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy at The Royal Children's Hospital and was undergoing maintenance chemotherapy until he suffered rare and debilitating side effects.

Ethan developed a motor mononeuritis multiplex resulting in severe weakness in his quadricep muscles and wrists, which may never resolve.

Cathie said the next heart-sinking moment was learning the cancer had returned.

"It's been tough, but Ethan is so strong.

He's got a good sense of humour and his positive attitude has been so amazing. He has really been the one lifting everyone

up," she said.

The family has faced incredible grief at the loss of Cathie's mum five years ago to cancer and the loss of her sister who battled breast cancer for 19 years. Cathie also lost her father when she was just 14 years old and Ethan lost his brother (Cathie's step son) who was six years old when he was tragically taken suddenly in car accident.

"There are so many people out there like me that are going through this - it's heartbreaking but Ethan's cancer battle does not go unrecognised without the support of my beautiful daughter Erin and exhusband Brent. We are a team and have a job to do," Cathie said.

"People don't realise unless they go through it themselves - it is probably one of the worst things as a parent that you can ever deal with. I have to search for reasons to smile now and search for happiness in little moments."

Friend launches GoFundMe Helping the family create as many happy memories together as possible is family friend Emma Brooksby who launched a GoFundMe page in November.

She aims to raise $5000 for the family, which will help Ethan achieve some of his goals like driving his first car and a family holiday to make memories.

Emma is principal of Riddells Creek Primary School where Cathie teaches and said she felt she had to find a way to help out.

"They are such a beautiful family and they have experienced such loss," Emma said.

"I would love to see Ethan achieve the things he wants to do. The community support and spirit has been really great."

Ethan is also determined to finish VCE next year at Sacred Heart College and he's

Travelling to Europe with his family, especially to Russia, is another big dream Ethan hopes to achieve.

Ethan said his school, family and friends continued to show "magnificent support" as he faced his toughest challenge yet.

"I like to say I'm not fazed by all of this

but that's not entirely true," Ethan said.

"You can't blow this thing away like it is nothing but you can't let it stop you from doing the things you want to do. "You've got to keep pushing and keep going."

Amy Hume A delicious Christmas spread awaited Community Lunch patrons last week in what was the first dine-in experience for months at Kyneton Community House.

About 60 diners enjoyed the twocourse garden party lunch held across Wednesday and Thursday.

While KCH volunteers continued to provide a takeaway service throughout COVID-19 restrictions, food coordinator Suzanne McDonnell said she was pleased to welcome the community back for a sit-down meal.

"It has been great for members of the community to come together again after such a long period of isolation," Ms McDonnell said.

"Everyone is welcome at our table.

We hope this is the return of our dine-in lunches and look forward to welcoming the community back to our events at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute next year."

Several volunteers help to deliver the popular community lunches that are designed to connect members of the community.

They are made possible through community donated produce and fruit and vegetables grown at the community house, and this year, also a considerable donation from Doxa Youth Foundation.

Kyneton Community House director Claire Rawlinson said Doxa had been a key partner in delivery of their lunches and food-relief program throughout the pandemic.

Doxa donated all camp food that would have otherwise gone to waste with no

children attending their Malmsbury Camp.

"It was a blessing for us and we were able to provide up to 100 takeaway meals weekly for those in the community who needed them," Ms Rawinson said.

"We also helped them cultivate their garden so it is ready for their operations into the future for the benefit of the disadvantage young people coming to camp."

Ms Rawlinson said the community had shown generosity in many ways throughout the pandemic including offering to purchase meals for those in need. More than 50 pre-paid meals were distributed during this time.

The community house is always happy to accept donations of produce and volunteers. Anyone wishing to assist can contact Kyneton Community House on 5422 3433.

Residents petitioning Macedon Ranges Shire Council to seal a section of Mowbrays Road in Cadello could be expected to help foot the bill.

About 38 people signed a petition, presented in August, to seal 1.4km of road between James and Anderson Roads.

The upgrade is expected to cost $1,045,000 but the council has no proactive and prioritised funded capital works program for the sealing of unsealed roads.

Council officers last week advised that the six property owners fronting the road would need to enter a special charge scheme to make the works a reality.

Under an SCS, property owners could be expected to contribute up to $66,000 ($11,200 each), with the council to fund the remaining $979,000.

Entering the agreement requires majority support with the affected residents on the road length.

Last week councillors voted to begin a consultation process and investigation into the road, which would include an updated traffic study.

The last traffic study for the road in 2013 recorded about 45 vehicles per day.

Consultation and investigation outcomes are expected to be presented to the council in April.

The new primary school being built in Gisborne South by the state government has been named following community consultation.

The school will be known as Willowbank Primary School when it opens its doors in 2022. Willowbank Primary was the clear top preference of respondents to an EngageVic survey of local families, reflecting the new school's proximity to Willowbank Road and Willowbank Estate.

The school shared in $438.6 million of funding for new schools as part of the government's Building Works package announced in 2020.

A kinder is planned to be built on the same site as the school, helping local children make a smooth transition from preschool and reduce the number of drop-offs for some parents with kinder and schoolaged children.

Help in your pocket A handy new wallet card is available from local businesses and community hubs to keep local residents mentally well in Mount Alexander Shire in the lead up to Christmas.

Central Victorian Primary Care Partnership executive officer Shelly Lavery said the the new cards were easy to understand with tips on how to stay on top of your mental health and wellbeing, and suggestions on things you could do when you felt you needed some help.

"It's also jam packed with the contact details for a range of local, state and national organisations who provide mental health support and services," Ms Lavery said.

"We know it's been a difficult year for many people due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and we felt it was really important to make this resource available in the lead up to Christmas.

"It's very common for people to feel stressed or overwhelmed at this time of the year due to things like financial pressures, family issues and the pressure to celebrate the festive season."

The cards are colour-coded in a traffic light system to help connect you with the level of service you need, based on how you are feeling.

The resource was developed by the Central Victorian Primary Care Partnership in collaboration with Mount Alexander Shire Council and the Mount Alexander CASI Local Support Network.

Jacqueline Brodie-Hanns from the Taproom - Shedshaker Brewery in Castlemaine was one of the first local business operators to embrace the idea and the cards are readily available at the counter.

"Like a lot of service industry workers, bar staff often find themselves playing incidental counselling roles," Ms BrodieHanns said.

"People will often disclose their struggles

Asking for help is brave Members of the Woodend Lifestyle Carers Group are continuing to offer their personal stories of caring for their loved ones with dementia in the hope that other carers will know there is support available to them.

Here, Lee Nicholls shares her story of caring for her mother.

Asking for help is one of the bravest things I have done. I contacted the Woodend Lifestyle Carers Group and am so glad I did.

My mother has mixed dementia and caring for her has, at times, been isolating and exhausting. She is still in the early stages but thanks to the other carers and the dementia support agencies, I know what her future holds and I am better able to plan for it - for Mum's benefit as well as my own.

Being my mother's primary carer is not a role I asked for. Nor is it a job I had any previous training for. I fell into the role because I was geographically closer and do it because I love her, and I want her to continue enjoying her life for as long as possible.

There are many kinds of dementia, more than 100. Dementia, for my mum, mostly means memory loss. Items are misplaced, medicines are missed, stories are incomplete when retold. Dementia for mum is also a loss of focus and less ability to reason or solve problems. Little jobs are begun and not completed. She is a target for scammers. Her wallet and keys will be in one of three or four places but she can no longer find them. Changing the volume on her TV or playing music has become complex.

I feel frustrated that I can't do more, and resentful that I am not getting more help.

I feel proud and happy that I am able to

spend so much time with her and am blown away by the kindness of others. Unfortunately though, there are days when I can't account for the time. Emotional exhaustion increases as Mum's care needs increase. I grieve for the loss of the mother I knew.

I miss my old life.

The support of other carers has been essential for my emotional wellbeing. Let's face it, if I am feeling healthier, I am better able to care for my mother.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas and Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards with councillors from Mount Alexander Shire and community members in Elphinstone.

A 25-year-old woman will front court after being caught driving at 145km/h in a 90km/h zone at Woodend last Monday.

Kyneton police intercepted the vehicle on Black Forest Drive and the driver's car was immediately impounded for 30 days and will cost her $1425 to retrieve.

The woman was from Wyuna.

Pump appeal for golf club

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas and Bendigo West Maree Edwards last Wednesday turned the sod for stage two of the Mount Alexander Shire's Small Town Streetscape Revitalisation project in Elphinstone, joined by members of the Mount Alexander Shire Council to mark the milestone.

Stage two works have been supported

by $500,000 from the state government's Regional Infrastructure Fund, helping businesses create more jobs in regional Victoria, supporting community projects and helping councils to deliver significant projects to the region.

The streetscape works improve the livability of each small town by increasing safety and creating spaces for local gatherings, which will support the community to connect and attract more visitors to the region.

The beautification and infrastructure makeovers for Campbells Creek, Taradale and

Elphinstone are part of a four-stage revitalisation program that aims to upgrade six small townships in the Mount Alexander Shire.

The overall project will also include streetscape works in Chewton, Newstead and Guildford, subject to council budget and funding over the next two years.

The project will also create town centres to improve local business opportunities and provide space for community gatherings. The two-year construction period is estimated to inject a further $1.4 million into the local economy.

A pump that circulates all-important waste water around the Woodend golf course needs replacing.

A quote of around $50,000 has been obtained, with the 30-year-old pump described as being "on its last legs".

Water is something golf clubs cannot do without, with Woodend Golf Club hoping to receive donations towards the replacement pump from members and friends of the club.

The club has partnered with the Australian Sports Foundation, which has provided a secure funding platform.

Watch for trains A near miss between a car and a train has prompted Victorian Goldfields Railway to warn road users within the Castlemaine, Muckleford and Maldon areas that trains have now resumed running passenger services on the Castlemaine to Maldon branch line.

Stephen Norgate of the Castlemaine and Maldon Railway Preservation Society, which operates the Victorian Goldfields Railway, said it was extremely important that drivers took care on the roads and were mindful that trains may be encountered at level crossings, at any time.

"The importance of this was very much apparent at 11.35am on Sunday December 13 when a driver of a Mitsubishi Lancer went across the Castlemaine Midland Highway level crossing, immediately in front of our train, much too close for the comfort of our volunteer crews," he said.

"This near miss was despite the flashing lights and bells being operational and both locomotives whistling.

"Such an incident, had it involved a collision, could have had quite severe consequences for many people.

"It is therefore most important to stay safe on the roads at all times and be very mindful of railway level crossings."

Mr Norgate said the VGR would love to welcome passengers to enjoy a journey on the branch line that links Castlemaine to the historic goldfields town of Maldon.

"The VGR has also changed the way that things operate, so passengers need to be aware that the tourist trains now originate from Castlemaine, rather than from their traditional location in Maldon," he said.

The Kyneton Tigers have donated $1000 to the Kyneton CFA as a part of the club's "giving back to the community" program.

Club president Hayden Evans said a percentage of the money the club generated over the year through fundraising was kept aside and allocated to a community or not-for-profit group that could do with some help.

"With the fire season season coming up we thought the brigade could do with a bit of support," he said.

"We've also got $1000 to give to the SES, which we will present on our Open Day Family Day on February 21.

"We're encouraging everyone to come along next year, we've got a lot of momentum and our focus is to promote an inclusive oneclub direction for juniors, netball, women's and men's football.

"We're very lucky in Kyneton that the whole community helps us run the club and bring in money, which is why we think it's important to give something back to the community."

Mount Alexander Shire Council will close its offices for the holiday season this Thursday December 24 at 3pm and reopen at 8.30am on Monday January 4, 2021.

For emergencies regarding roads and drains, maternal and child health or stock and animal control (excluding wildlife) call 5471 1700 and follow the prompts.

Due to public holidays, residents who normally have their bins collected on a Friday will have them collected on the following day.

That means Saturday December 26 instead of Christmas Day and Saturday January 2, 2021 instead of New Years Day. You can report a missed bin collection via an online service request on council's website at www.mountalexander.vic.gov.au or call Veolia Environmental on (03) 5820 8500.

Queensland fruit fly was confirmed in a number of locations in Castlemaine this year for the first time ever. The pest can devastate commercial and backyard fruit and vegetable crops.

Summer is an important time of the year to take action and help protect against an infestation of fruit fly.

Mount Alexander Shire Council and the Harcourt Valley Fruit Fly Action Group are calling for the community to work together to help prevent any further outbreaks.

"The most important things you can do are the three Ps," said Terry Willis from the action group.

"Prune, so trees are a nettable height; pick up fallen fruit; and protect with monitoring traps or incursion netting," he said.

Here's what you can do this summer * Don't bring infected fruit into the shire * Net your vegetable garden, fruit trees or bag individual fruit * Pick fruit regularly and clean up fallen fruit * Check tomatoes and fruit for sting marks * Continue to trap and monitor fruit fly population levels weekly * Prune trees to a manageable height so you can pick, net and check fruit * Treat infected fruit by microwaving, freezing or placing the fruit in a sealed black plastic bag and leaving in the sun for at least seven days. The fruit must be disposed of in the rubbish bin, not in the compost. * Keep a look out for the fruit fly which are very small - about 5-8mm long - brown with yellow 'shoulder pads' and other markings including a yellow triangle at the base of the mid-section. They have reddish eyes. The larvae are white or cream and 2-9mm long.

They are wedge shaped and plumper at the tail end. A black feeding hook is visible in mature larvae. You may find between two and 20 larvae in the fruit. The pupae are like a large grain of brown rice and vary in colour from cream to brown.

Infected fruit becomes soft and spongy and may start to rot. You may see sting marks on light-coloured fruit. The flies may eat all the fruit and leave the skin.

The high-risk fruits in summer are stone fruit such as cherries, apricots, peaches, nectarines and plums. High risk vegetables are tomatoes, capsicums and chillies.

While this year has been immensely difficult for local tourism operators, Big 4 Castlemaine Gardens Holiday Park has used the lockdown closures as an opportunity to continue to revamp the historic park on the fringe of the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens.

Park owner Claire Height said she decided she needed to get on with things.

"In light of the success of our luxury bell safari tents, we had planned to take our 'glamping option' to a whole new level with the installation of two luxury safari tents. I thought, 'why not use this period to put them in and see what happens?'"

Ms Height said.

Claire has been operating the park for 12 years now and said 2019 was their best year yet.

"Castlemaine is really becoming a destination with our goldfields heritage, arts

culture, food, The Mill complex - which is just a short stroll away - and much, much more and I had faith that despite the challenges of COVID the tourists would be back," she said.

The luxury safari tents include a fourposter bed, a cosy nook with a further two beds for the kids or extra guests, a full kitchen and bathroom and an outdoor platform complete with a claw-foot bath, which takes in the stunning views of the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens Bushland Reserve.

Within days of being listed on the caravan park's website the luxury glamping options were snapped up every weekend until Christmas!

"I was absolutely blown away by the response," Ms Height said.

"The bell tents are ideal for couples but these new safari tents are great for the couple looking for a little luxury or a family looking for adventure."The park has also

welcomed the arrival of another first - a 'glamtainer' - a luxury accommodation option housed within a converted shipping container.

During the months of downtime, Ms Height and the team have also repainted and rejuvenated all their other cabins, including brand new mattresses.

The improvements follow on from the renovation of the park's 1960s communal toilet block in a 'vintage' theme, the installation of a couple of family sized threebedroom villas and the upgrade of their camp kitchen in a fun goldfields theme.

"When I first purchased the park I had so many plans and it is wonderful to see all those dreams finally coming to fruition," Ms Height said.

"The park is looking fantastic and we have accommodation options to suit everyone planning to visit our beautiful town. We can't wait to welcome everyone back!"

Drink driver nabbed twice in one day Kyneton Police intercepted a 62-year-old drink driver from Fitzroy North twice on December 7.

Police first nabbed the man on Tylden-Woodend Road about 9am and the man returned a breath test reading of 0.104.

He was issued with an infringement notice and his license was immediately suspended for 10 months.

Police observed the same man driving on Forrest Street, Woodend, about 11.45am. He was intercepted and returned a further breath test of 0.81.

He has been charged on summons for drink driving and driving while suspended. His car was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1475.

Don’t be a bystander this festive season With the festive season upon us, central Victoria's specialist domestic and family violence response service, Centre for Non-Violence, is calling on everyone to be mindful of the increased risk to women and children at this time of year - and encouraging all of us to play a part in supporting their safety.

CEO Margaret Augerinos says while domestic and family violence reports to police and support services increase during the festive season each year, they are expecting to see that number even higher in 2020 as Victorian families come together in large numbers for the first time since COVID-19 lockdowns.

"We know there will be added pressures this year, as the pandemic has had a heavy financial impact for many families," she said.

"We will also see many families come together for the first time in many months.

"But it is important to recognise that while many families will be under pressure this festive season, violence is a choice and we can all make a choice not to use violence against the people we love or care about."

Ms Augerinos says friends and family members should be mindful of how they see others being treated, and not ignore any warning signs.

"Violence against women is everybody's

business - we all need to be calling out behaviours that are disrespectful towards women.

"This violence can take many forms, and it's important to note that coercive control and environments where women are restricted or do not feel safe to make their own choices, are just as dangerous as environments where physical abuse is present.

"It is normal for partners to have disagreements. In a relationship where partners are equal, both can state their opinions and feel heard - in a safe environment," she said.

"In an abusive relationship, one partner tries to control the other - and can use a number of tactics to do this.

"It may be physical violence, verbal abuse, restricting their freedom and movement, making demands or threats, or sexual abuse."

People who see these behaviours can show their disapproval through body language (don't laugh, walk away, stand between the person making the comments and the woman they're being directed to, call it out if it's safe to do so); question sexist jokes, support someone calling out the behaviour, ask them to stop or change the topic," Ms Augerinos said.

"It's important to follow up with the woman whom the behaviour is being direct-

ed towards," she said.

It can be difficult to know how to help someone experiencing violence or abuse, but some strategies could include: - Listening without judgment.

- Never excusing violence or abuse (whether it's physical or psychological).

- Never questioning their choices. She is an expert in her own safety. Understand that for many reasons, a woman may not leave a relationship.

- Find practical ways to help - deliver groceries, keep copies of private documents, offer your home as a safe place to go.

- Help her prepare a safety plan.

He was invited to compete in the 2020 World Championships in Austria this year, but was unable to attend due to COVID restrictions. Isaac also achieved the prestigious Jason Lowndes Junior Development Award.

Good Deeds: Shyla McPhail is heavily involved in fundraising for a number of different organisations, including Cancer Council, the Royal Children's Hospital, and the Starlight Foundation.

She has been participating in the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday appeal since she was five years old and continues to encourage her friends and family to join in.

Skilling It: Kirk Close began his scented candle business Ginger Ninjas three years ago at the age of 10 as a way to raise money for orangutans. He donates 50 per cent of all profits to Orangutan Project and has so far donated $3000 over three years.

Well Aware: Kyle Hayes works in the Live4Life program, ensuring young people in the Macedon Ranges are informed about mental health issues and help seeking behaviour.

He is involved with the Batyr in Schools program - a preventative mental health program driven by young people for young people.

Kyle played a major role in adapting this program for remote delivery.

He has also created his own personal development program called ManEnough, which focuses on stigmas associated with rigid masculine stereotypes.

Pure Imagination: Monet Lewis and Emily Medbury were joint recipients of this award.

Emily is the founding co-director of Nicefilm.co, an ethical, environmentally sustainable film company and is a debut director and producer.

Their first short film, Mycelium Made, was partially shot in the Macedon Ranges and was shortlisted in the Environmental Film Festival and won two awards at other film festivals.

Fellow recipient, Monet began in performing arts when she was three years old and has performed in more than 10 theatre and musical theatre productions. She has been involved with both Sprout Theatre and Mount Players Theatre, and this year landed a professional role in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, as Lily Potter Jr, due to return post-COVID.

Extraordinary and diverse achievements of young people in the Macedon Ranges were celebrated in the Macedon Ranges Youth Awards last week.

Eight youths recognised across six categories were: Michael Smith, Daniel Smyth, Isaac Fletcher, Shyla McPhail, Kirk Close, Kyle Hayes, Monet Lewis and Emily Medbury.

Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said the event acknowledged the many ways young people participated in and contributed to the local community.

"Each nominee deserves to be recognised. They are creating positive change in our local communities and beyond, and I'd like to acknowledge and thank each of them for their contributions and achievements," Cr Anderson said.

"I would also like to thank all of the family, friends, volunteers and staff who support our young people in their endeavours to make the Macedon Ranges such a beautiful and inclusive place."

Award recipients Will Power: Michael Smith was acknowledged for his positivity and determination in overcoming health challenges to achieve his goals.

As a seven year old, Michael had an accident that left him with a brain injury, and crippling physical injuries down one side of his body, some permanent and some degenerative.

During the 16 years of operations and physiotherapy following the accident, Michael has worked hard to achieve several personal goals.

Nicely Played: Was awarded to Daniel Smyth and Isaac Fletcher for their achievements in scouting and mountain biking, respectively.

Daniel is a venturer at the 1st Riddells Creek Scout Group and an active member of the club, leading hikes with camping and a fundraiser for the Starlight Foundation that raised $1000.

He was recently awarded the Australian Scout Medallion, which is the peak award for scouts aged 11-15 years.

Isaac began mountain biking seriously three years ago at a competitive level and earlier this year finished fifth-place at the national championships, earning his first under-19 team green and gold jersey.

NEW YEAR’S EVE SteamPacket at Maldon SteamPacket has released another 40 reserved seats for New Year's Eve under the stars at The Maldon Golf Club.

The initial allocation sold out in a few days, but by moving the stage orientation the extra seats can be added. All seats will have a great view of the stage while complying with social distancing.

"This will be the last allocation of tickets," said SteamPacket's Clif Edwards, "and there will be no door sales or ticket sales on the day as we have to finalise setup the day before."

Shades of Gray Spring exhibition The Shades of Gray Studio Gallery and Garden Spring exhibition began late last month and continues every weekend until Christmas.

Chelly and Peter Gray’s latest exhibition features a stunning array of new creations including Kooky Owls, majestic Wishing Trees, beautiful wreaths and signs, and flowers!

Hundreds and hundreds of stunning flowers in every hue!

The gardens are dotted with intricate birdhouses, garden sculptures, weather vanes and there are a wide array of pieces to be enjoyed in the galleries.

Take the family on a story walk Local children, families and carers are invited to share the wonder of reading together during the summer holidays and take a 'story walk'.

Story walks are children's picture books located in the outdoors, and aim to get people reading together, spending more time in nature, and involved in physical activity.

Each story walk highlights a different children's book, with pages extracted from the book, laminated, and placed on wooden stakes at distanced points along an existing path or trail.

Mount Alexander Shire Council and the Goldfields Library have partnered to create five different story walks within the Shire, located in Castlemaine, Campbells Creek, Chewton and Harcourt.

Families are encouraged to meander along one of the short story walk tracks and read a different story as they go.

Story walk books include The Thankyou Dish by local author Trace Balla, and Respect by Auntie Faye Muir, and are suitable for children up to eight years of age.

Jess Saunders, manager of Castlemaine Library, said the story walks were a fantastic opportunity for children and families to engage in 'incidental literacy'.

"Reading and enjoying a story in the park or in the bush with your family is a different way to experience learning and literacy," Ms Saunders said.

"It really encourages children and families to participate and engage deeply, to ask questions and develop a curiosity about the stories, about their environment and about the world."

The story walk initiative supports a number of objectives of the Mount Alexander Early Years Plan 2018-2021, aiming to increase literacy levels and learning opportunities for children, and encouraging

a whole of community approach to literacy and learning.

Story walk participants can go in the running to win a book pack of all five Story Walk books by finding the picture of an Australian animal hidden on each story walk.

Find the animal and its Dja Dja Wurrung name, and email it to castlemaine@ ncgrl.vic.gov.au, along with a comment that explains what you liked about doing a story walk for a chance to win.

The competition closes on February 1, 2021, with winners drawn at Castlemaine Library on February 2, 2021. Love Shack Brewing to launch Love Shack Brewing Company is set to launch at Castlemaine's Theatre Royal on New Year's Eve 2020 with a massive party featuring Melbourne band The Murlocs.

Brewers Conna Mallett and Harrison Cox met over a beer four years ago while working at Stomping Ground Brewery in Collingwood and have been good mates ever since.

Mallett went on to be the lead brewer at Stomping Ground's new brew pub at Melbourne Airport, which was temporarily closed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cox had also moved on to Mornington Peninsula Brewery and then to Hop Nation Brewing Co in Footscray.

Making the best of a bad situation the duo decided to take the time and start their own brewery.

"When life gives you lemons, you make beer," Mallett said.

"I have always loved Castlemine and when my family and I moved here, we saw so much potential in the town for a business like this, we just had to find the right site for it."

Mallett had been looking at different sites in Castlemaine when he bumped into Tim Heath, one of the owners of the heritage-listed Theatre Royal. "I told Tim what I was doing and he said they had an old shed out the back of the Theatre, why don't we do it there," Mallett said.

"Just like that Love Shack Brewing Company was born.

"That's the great thing about Castlemaine, the locals have been so supportive and keen to help out."

More than just an 'old shed', Love Shack is now home to a 6HL (six hectolitre) brewhouse and three 12HL fermentation tanks. There will also be a dedicated bar that will directly service the 300 capacity beer garden at the rear of the Theatre Royal. With further taps in the band room and main bar, punters can enjoy Love Shack brews in all areas of the venue.

"The best thing about the venue is that we will get heaps of different people though the doors, sampling our beers and giving us direct feedback," Mallett said.

"We both plan to work the bar so that we can have a chat with punters and educate them about the brewing process and our beers."

"We hope to launch our pack range by mid 2021," Mallett said.

Love Shack will launch with a core range of lager, pale ale and IPA as well as a summer Passionfruit and Pineapple Sour.

"We are installing a hand pump at the bar so will be experimenting with some English-style ales when winter comes around and will release seasonal beers throughout the year," Mallett said.

Love Shack Brewing Company officially opens its doors on December 31 with a huge NYE party with Melbourne band The Murlocs launching brewery into the new year. The party will continue into the weekend with Mr Fritto's Food Truck serving food in the beer garden.

Love Shack Brewing Company opens from 1.30pm on December 31 and is located at the rear of the Theatre Royal, 30 Hargraves Street, Castlemaine. Summer opening hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday 12pm to late.

Say no to land grab K Coulter, Kyneton Recently I have noticed an increase in concerns regarding the subdivisions planned for Edgecombe Road, Kyneton, which would appear to amount to over 156 acres lost to industrialisation and urban sprawl.

Beware Kyneton - this development is huge and consists of three separate planning applications; a) A service station with fast food outlets.

To give you an idea, think of the BP/ MacDonalds/ KFC combo at Calder Park. b) A subdivision with 25 commercial lots to run along the east side of Edgecombe Road and 18 rural living lots c) A Bunnings This northern section of Kyneton is absorbing the lion's share of industrial/ commercial development in the Macedon Ranges, yet is also the gateway to some of our most precious natural attractions, such as Blackhill Reserve and Turpins Falls. Post Office Creek runs directly through this parcel of land and provides habitat for species, indigenous to the Kyneton area, yet this development would place this habitat under an untenable burden.

In a post-COVID era we will be more reliant on local tourism to support our local businesses. We already have tourists coming to Kyneton to enjoy the country town experience. Should a large development, visible from the freeway, become the 'first impression', tourists may well be put off, choosing instead to continue on to unspoilt areas.

It was quoted in an earlier Midland Express article that the proposed development would provide jobs, but at what price? Rural farmland, native flora and fauna habitat, precious water resources, clean air, small businesses, future tourism revenue and in its wake, leave us with increased heavy industry traffic, rubbish from takeaway food, increased pollution runoff, inability of roads to cope with the sudden uptick in traffic and a visual blight at Kyneton's gateway?

I believe this type of supersized development is not what the community were expecting when rezoning was first proposed in 2012.

I feel that this proposal will turn Edgecombe Road into an ugly McMansion suburbia with a large side order of industrial estate blight.

Flouting its own laws Hans Paas, Castlemaine 'RAR reflects' (Midland Express, December 15) demonstrates that Australian values of freedom and generosity are alive and well in this community. On the other hand, the Coalition Government, which is led by a Prime Minister who trumpets his Christian credentials, continues to violate basic beliefs of faith-based people everywhere.

The light that is now showing in the darkness created by this ruthless Coalition Government is cause for optimism. A legal battle has been being waged for some time now that is showing that this is a government that flouts its own laws.

Vulnerable people whose only crime was fleeing for their lives on boats have been systematically neglected in off-shore detention in an illegal (under international law) attempt to bully them into returning to their country of origin and in most cases, certain death.

The National Justice Project's team of dedicated lawyers has now taken the fight all the way to the High Court and exposed this outlaw regime that is trashing our country's former international reputation as a champion for the rule of law. Along the way, judges are being faced with incontrovertible proof of Border Force's out-of-control tactics aimed at breaking the spirit of detainees so they will agree to leave the country they came to desperately seeking asylum.

This evil done in our name is something for all of us to ponder as we get together with family and friends to celebrate the spirit of Christmas. Thank God for the refugee activists and their legal team fighting for the freedom of these long-suffering would-be Australians.

Like many Australians, I am preoccupied with preparations for catching up with people I have not seen for most of the year. It appears that the state government has seen this as an excellent time to sneak some controversial decisions through 'under the radar'.

Two weeks ago, the Midland Express ran a front page story with our local State MP Mary-Anne Thomas, her office staff, the mayor, and chair of the local tourism committee throwing celebratory streamers to advertise the Victorian government's allocation of $12 million towards the old Kyneton Primary School site. What was not shown was a group representing many of the community organisations that was considerably larger and had turned down the invitation to participate in this photo opportunity.

The $12 million has been secured by the as-yet-undisclosed bidder. It was not given to the old primary school site specifically.

In last week's Opinions, Rob Bakes set out the torturous route the future of the school site has travelled to this unsatisfactory point.

Questions need to be asked about this process.

When the original DELWP statement for the EOI acknowledged the strong community support for a locally managed community facility, why was the criteria designed in a way that put community groups at a disadvantage? Why were community groups actively encouraged

It's time for some home truths about wildlife road kills and injuries.

Most drivers have little empathy for wildlife. This means their convenience to travel as fast as possible is more important than the inconvenience of travelling slower to prevent wildlife deaths and injuries as well as improve safety for drivers and other road users. Many drivers avoid possible vehicle collision damage inconvenience by equipping them with roo bars. The evidence for this view is clear. When I slow to a safe speed at wildlife advisory signs, most vehicles overtake me. On the two-kilometres, single-lane, gravel surface Moffats Lane close to Romsey there are three yellow advisory Wildlife Crossing signs and three Land for Wildlife signs. The average speed of vehicles on this lane is 80km/h (survey data), too fast to avoid collisions with wildlife crossing from among the long grass, bushes and trees on its verges.

While Macedon Ranges Shire Council supports wildlife welfare and proliferation through its biodiversity policy, it has failed so far to lobby the Minister for Roads and Road Safety to lower VicRoads' default maximum speed limit through wildlife hot spots. It's current strategy, and that of VicRoads, is yellow advisory signs indicating that wildlife are likely to cross the roads. Roadkill research shows most drivers don't take any notice of such signs.

to submit separate EOIs apart from the Co-Op (divide and conquer?)? How can the preferred submission be dependent on $12 million funding that was was not available at the close of submission date?I am not interested in the politics, I just want to know what happened to all of the work the community organisations put into this project, only to be sidelined and ignored at the final post.

The local community does not take to being ridden roughshod over lightly. It may be family first for now but once we are done with the celebratory catch ups we will be back on to our community and its issues to see what can be salvaged for all the community needs identified in the many submissions.

Of no benefit Tony Anderson, Castlemaine The Exclusive Brethren's proposal for their Blakeley Road scheme is not to be taken at face value. A congregation capacity of 900 for their projected church hall is out of proportion to the needs of a community claiming to be only 90 strong.

Council information given me on December 16 estimated Castlemaine's population is now about 18,000. On that basis they constitute only 0.5 per cent of local inhabitants. Why would the council consider such a disproportionate indulgence be conceded to this group?

It is very clear this project is motivated by their proposed venue being used by a much greater number.

It also belies the statement "the new hall would be used for up to 10 hours per week in total, over three to six days". Does this indicate three meetings, each of three-plus hours, or six of less than an hour per week only? Most unlikely given the financial investment required to build it.

Only the simplest exercise of mental arithmetic is required to deduce this is a specious misrepresentation.

Current real estate news shows the Brethren are reorganising their communities, pulling up some established stakes and relocating or developing in others.

What is their Castlemaine congregation's real plan? A question of council rates needs to be raised here too. The ABC recently stated "Victorians pay $803 in rates per person each year". The average country resident pays more, for there are fewer of them to cover rural councils' outlays. It further revealed: "Small rural councils are … under pressure" and "attention [needs] to be given to the plight of those local governments that have a smaller revenue base than their city counterparts".

Churches pay no property rates. Despite the Brethren's assertion, this development will neither benefit our town nor its tradespeople. Unless it is otherwise necessitated, their own community and workpeople take precedence, to enable their money to be retained within their own ambit. This project will not benefit Castlemaine nor those living near this proposed intrusive venue.

A win-win solution Jill Loorham, Castlemaine It seems to me a new way of thinking is needed to encourage Australian seasonal workers onto farms during the harvesting seasons.

My proposal is for a new 'National Service' that would bring university students to farms as seasonal workers throughout their university years. Students would annually 'pre-pay' their university fees by working on farms, picking fruit, getting the hay in, planting crops, where they would 'earn', in return, a healthy place to live and work as well as a healthy respect for farming and its benefits to the city.

Lateral thinking and bringing together people from two very valuable and different spheres of community - with the resultant mutual gaining of respect and understanding across both worlds - would be a win-win solution in every way.

Chill-out Christmas lunch tips The Christmas season seems to creep up on me every year like a barefooted elf.

A little part of me can’t help but miss the dark, cold winter days of the UK leading up to Christmas. There is something not quite right about Santa in board shorts and I am not just talking about his midriff.

Dark nights walking along Carnaby Street in London was always my first glimpse of Christmas when living in London. Giant baubles hanging in the street, the chill in the air, the shops brilliant with sparkles and Christmas tunes blaring (even if that meant a bit too much Maria Carey). Staying indoors and eating (like it was an Olympic sport) just seemed right.

Over here in the Southern Hemisphere, Christmas is very different. The iced windows of the English pubs make way for the icy beers in the esky.

The piping hot roasts and heavy puddings are replaced with delicious fresh seafood and long warm summer nights. And though we still embrace some of the Anglo traditions, the Christmas tables are now embracing a rainbow of different cultures, flavours and dishes that represent the Australia of now and the beautiful array of fresh produce and multicultural influences of our communities.For us, our Christmas day here in Australia is always spent with family. The bigger the better. There is always plenty of food, lots of laughter and a mandatory fight over who will be Santa and give out the presents after lunch. Since living in Kyneton we love having Christmas at our house and using as much of our own and local produce as possible. The beauty of a warm Christmas day means that catering can be relaxed and easy. In my mind as long as we have enough ice and bubbles to match, then Christmas day will go off without a hitch. But if the thought of cooking for Christmas day makes your heart race (and not in a Love Actually, Liam Neeson kind of way), I have some ideas for you.

Top tips for a stress-free Christmas lunch 1. Plan your menu then delegate a dish each to your guests. Christmas is a time of giving and if they could burn water, ask them to bring a couple of bread sticks and ice. You can never have too much ice.

2. KISS - Keep It Simple for Santa. Seriously don’t for a second think that your guests will be looking for a seven-course, silver-service affair if they are coming to your house. Have a menu that you can prepare in advance so that you can relax too. If you have a family of pescatarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free ketos, get them to bring the dish they would love to eat on the day, then buy yourself an extra bottle of bubbles. Have a mezze platter to start, a meat/seafood main and several salads, roast potatoes to follow and a couple of crowd-pleaser desserts to end.

3. Plan for all weather. We live in a region that loves meteorological variety. If in doubt, plan for a buffet-style, eat-off-your-lap kind of lunch when looking at your menu. Setting an Instagram-worthy trestle table in the garden sounds divine, but we have had 47 degrees one year and a thunderstorm with golfball-size hailstones the next.

4. If you are not the host for Christmas Day, don’t arrive three hours early unless you plan to cook the whole meal on arrival. Bring ice.

5. It is worth remembering that it is Christmas 2020. People have worn masks for a long time and may not have eaten a meal with their family/friends for even longer. Expectations will be low. A shop-bought roast chicken and potatoes will definitely cut it if it means laughing with their much-loved, much-missed family.

If you are looking for someone else to cook for you, there are several local restaurants who are doing their own versions of ‘heat and eat’ at home Christmas meals that can be pre-ordered and picked up on Christmas Eve to make your Christmas Day truly stress-free.

Recipe

Frozen Lemon Meringue Stack with Limoncello drizzle

Ingredients Meringue Make this a few days ahead 4 egg whites ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar 2 teaspoons of cornflour 225gm superfine caster sugar Lemon filling 4 egg yolk 125gm caster sugar 125mls lemon juice Finely grated zest of two lemons 300ml thickened cream Limoncello syrup 60ml limoncello Finely zested lemon zest 2 tablespoons sugar Method Preheat the oven to 150 degrees. Line two baking trays with baking paper and trace three 20cm tins lightly with a grey lead pencil.Sprinkle egg whites with cream of tarter. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Mix the sugar and cornflour together and then add to the egg whites gradually until the sugar has dissolved and the whites are thick and glossy. Spread the meringue inside the marked rings and place in the preheated oven. Reduce temperature to 140 degrees and bake meringue for one hour or until the meringue is crisp to touch.

For the lemon custard put the egg yolks and caster sugar in a heavy-based saucepan and mix until smooth and well combined then add the lemon juice continue to stir until the mixture thickens and it coats the back of a spoon. Remove from the heat and keep stirring for another minute. Pour into a bowl and refrigerate until completely cold. In a separate bowl beat the cream until firm and fold through the lemon custard one spoon at a time. Keep refrigerated until needed.

To assemble, spoon custard into the middle of one disk then spread towards the edge leaving a good four centimetres away from the edge. Place the next meringue on top and repeat process. Wrap gently in foil and place in freezer until needed. Remove half an hour before serving.

For the limoncello syrup place the limoncello, sugar and zest into a saucepan and stir until the sugar dissolves. Simmer without stirring for five minutes until it slightly thickens then set aside to allow to cool. Drizzle over meringue just before serving.

Those in-the-know guessed it the day before Kyneton's annual first cross ewe sale lat Friday. Yarding numbers were going to be down. Why else would the heavy traffic the roads the stock trucks took on their way into Kyneton saleyards be a lot less than in earlier years?

And yes, those sheep numbers were down. Last year the number yarded was about on average for the recent span of years - 9000 of them were sent to Kyneton for sale in 2019. This year there was an emptiness around the outer stock pens at the yards. Only 6230 sheep were there.

Word around the yards had it that it was because some of the bigger vendors who sent their stock to Kyneton had either retired from the business or had severely scaled back on their way to selling their properties.

Another reason touted was that COVID has thrown a veil of doubt over the sale. Would sheep the able to be sent from New South

Wales? Who knew until recently, and it takes time to prepare livestock for sale!

But while numbers were down, prices were good. Beginning the sale were top pens sold by Elders and then McGRath Rodwell. The Elders pen of 150 May/June 2019 drop border leicester/merino ewes on account of A. Foley of Rochford opened the sale. They were purchased at the Kyneton yards last year and this year realised $388 a head. The second pen auctioned by McGrath Rodwell was 162 September/October 2019 drop first cross ewes on account of R and P Paget of Ruffy. They made $390 a head. This year's prices compare well to those in recent years. In 2018 the top was $313 while last year it was $370.

But this year's winner of the Jeff Keech Memorial Award for the best presented and prepared pen were not ewes. They were a lead pen of ewe lambs from Anthony and Kate Barri of Glenhope.

Metro status for RDFNL The Riddell District Football Netball League will be classified as a Metro league after being in the country region of AFL Goldfields for some years.

"This is an exciting time for the RDFNL and our 24 member clubs, and this is a positive step in the right direction. Bring on 2021," stated league general manager Jordan Doyle.

Speaking on behalf of the RDFNL board, Jordan said Riddell is thrilled to be affiliating directly with AFL Victoria as a metropolitan league once more.

The league has been working with AFL Victoria to establish a new metropolitan affiliation agreement, and this has now eventuated.

Riddell was categorised as a a Metro league up until 2012, when AFL Goldfields took over administration under the AFL Vic Country banner.

"The board, in conjunction with our clubs, thought the time was right to move back to selfadministration and part of that was affiliating with AFL Victoria once more," Doyle explained.

"The RDFNL is a boutique league with a unique mix of clubs and geographic locations, but this move gives the league flexibility going forward."

The league thanks AFL Goldfields for past administration services, and in particular the efforts of Rod Ward and Aaron Nunn, and Gerard Ryan for the past 12 months.

With COVID-19 wrecking the 2020 season, Riddell looks forward to seeing community football and netball returning next year.

Celebrating 130 years On Christmas Day this year, Woodend Bowling Club will celebrate 130 years since the very first green was opened - December 25, 1890.

The origins of the club dated back just over six months from then when, on June 1, it was decided at a well-attended meeting to establish a bowls, croquet and lawn tennis club in Woodend.

A committee was appointed to select the most suitable site and was authorised by the meeting to make application to the council. The location chosen was situated on the south side of the Five Mile Creek and was unanimously approved by the meeting that was consequently held.

"This is exactly the same picturesque location that the Woodend Bowling Club still enjoys today â&#x20AC;Ś more than 130 years later," club president Mike Dornau said.

It was also suggested that a four-feet, sixinch picket fence be erected, at a cost of which would not exceed 50 pounds, with Cr Christian donating 15 pounds to the cause. As soon as the fence was erected the club would then spend at least 50 pounds in forming the new bowling green.

The rest, as they say, is history.

130 YEARS OF MAJOR EVENTS "Since the formation of the Woodend Bowling Club in 1890, the members of the club have seen and been part of some amazing historic events" Mr Dornau said.

"The Federation of the nation of Australia, two World Wars, the Spanish Flu epidemic, the Great Depression, two Olympic Games, five Commonwealth Games, 30 prime ministers and now the COVID-19 pandemic.

"There have also been lots of great and memorable times at our club in those 130 years as well.

Thousands of members and visitors have enjoyed playing competition and tournaments. Hundreds of club member volunteers have maintained and kept the club in beautiful condition. Thousands of people have enjoyed our facilities for various types of functions.

"The introduction of the all-weather carpet green nine years ago means that members and visitors can now bowl 12 months of the year.

"More recently, with the introduction of barefoot bowls, thousands of people, groups, parents and families have enjoyed a social bowl and our wonderful facilities and environment.

"A great foundation for the next 130 years."

Great end to an odd year It has been a year like no other but for the Macedon Rangers Soccer Club it was a year of firsts and despite all the challenges.

The Rangers never gave up and the juniors were rewarded with a presentation night to finish off the year.

Many of the children had never kicked a soccer ball until this year and with Matt and Craig's dedication they have succeed in establishing Under 9s girls and boys teams with 2021 shaping up to be a bigger year. With major sponsors Bendigo Bank, Ochre Health, KB Diesel and the Macedon Rangers Shire Council behind the club the children received their 2020 trophies with much excitement and fanfare. To all the parents, locals and sponsors, the club passes on its thanks.

Mark Smoljo (Kyneton) and Teresa Wylie (Gisborne) are Central Highlands Bowling Division's individual singles champions for 2020-2021.

The men's final played at Kyneton was a thriller, with Smoljo down game twice against defending champion Kevin Jarred (Gisborne).

Smoljo admittede he felt "a bit lucky" after an errant drive diverted off a short bowl and produced a dead end with the score being 20-18 in Jarred's favour.

He played a brilliant draw shot on the next end, and eventually won 21-20, the same score as in his opening round against Gisborne's John Evans.

Now for a holiday break Bill West Central Highlands pennant bowls is now in recess until January 9, following completion of the sixth round of home and away matches on Saturday.

In division one, reigning premiers Kyneton bounced back after a drubbing at the hands of ladder leader Kyneton Golf to win by six shots at Lancefield, and move back into second place at the expense of the Tigers.

Peter Linehan won by nine shots, but the Tigers were outplayed on the other two rinks, Peter Ryan making a winning debut as skipper for the visitors.

Kyneton Golf did not get things all their own way at home to Gisborne, with Steve Taylor going down to Peter Williams by five shots, and the overall margin 14 in favour of the top side which is close to wrapping up top spot.

Romsey secured 15 of the 16 points up for grabs against Diggers Rest, with the 28-shot overall margin highlighted by Cam Austin's runaway victory over Bob Reidy.

The closest match of the round was in second division at Woodend, with the home side surviving a strong challenge

from Macedon.

Romsey moved into second spot by upsetting ladder leader Kyneton Golf by 13 shots, with the top four sides in this division well clear of the bottom four.

Bottom side Diggers Rest scored its first win of the season, knocking Romsey down from second to fourth in division three.

Woodend golf The third and final round of Woodend Golf Club's 2020 championships has been completed.

After the second round Seamus Whelan and Andrew Davies were tied in the championship lead, with Connor Whelan two strokes further back.

A final round of 68 wrapped up the title for Seamus, the pre-event favourite playing off a handicap of +2.

He had rounds of 66, 75 and 68 for a 209 total for the prestige 54-hole event, and he also captured the putting award with 78 putts.

There was an exciting finish for the Bgrade title, with Terry Longton edging out Chris Kilty in a play-off after they had tied after three rounds.

Longton carded 78, 84, 87 - 249 and Kilty 87, 81, 81 - 249.

Maurice Rintala had a tremendous championship, taking out the C-grade title, the senior trophy, and the over nett (President's Trophy).

Rintala produced three consistent rounds of 87, 87, 89 - 263 and finished with a nett 203.

The club congratulates all winners, and hopes plenty of visitors try out the course over the holiday period.

Kyneton golf Score of the day in Kyneton Golf Club's stableford event on Saturday came from Cgrade winner Rick O'Donnell (handicap 30) with a fine 40 points. Paul Law was runnerup with 36.

Scott Murphy (8) headed A-grade with 33, from Brad Cue (16) 32, with Terry Kot best in B-grade with 38, points, from Ivan Smolcic 37.

Jenny Kerr (35) led in the ladies with 36 point, on a countback fro Robyn MacRae. Nearest the pins went to O'Donnell, Murphy, Glen Cook, Noel Alldis and David Ryan (also super pin).

Playing off 25, 'young gun' Thomas Rutledge took the honors at Wednesday's stableford, with Paul Moore - same handicap - runner-up on a countback.

Julie Harris (28) had 45 points for the ladies, and took NTP, along with Gordon Stevens.

SPORTS wrap ‘Rock’ races switch Bill West

The traditional New Year's Day race meeting that draws thousands of people to Hanging Rock is being transferred to Kyneton.

The Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club investigated all possible options to enable the drawcard January 1 meeting to take place at 'The Rock', but found it would be too difficult to hold the meeting there with COVIDSafe restrictions still in place.

The racing club last week notified its members of the decision to transfer the meeting to the Kyneton cours, outlining the background to the decision, but expressed the hope that the scheduled Australia Day meeting could still go ahead - subject to approvals - at Hanging Rock.

Club general manager Jon Dight said Racing Victoria and the state government's relaxation of restrictions regarding crowds at race meetings was welcomed, with the club excited about the prospect of having spectators at its meetings again.

They have been prohibited since March this year when the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread.

He said racing clubs and event organisers were faced with the question of whether or not they can comply with COVIDSafe measures and still provide the public with a worthwhile and satisfying race day experience.

Under current rules for outdoor events, attendees are required to be ticketed, seated, and limited to less than 1000. The public must be distanced from industry participants.

"With these specific restrictions still in

place for the New Year, the management and board of the club have determined that complying with the current restrictions at Hanging Rock Reserve is incredibly difficult, and would impede on our ability to provide a great customer experience," Dight said.

Weighing everything up, the club approached the industry and arranged to transfer the New Year's Day meeting from Hanging Rock to Kyneton.

The club emphasises it has not yet made a decision about Australia Day. "We will determine over the coming weeks what restrictions are removing and whether we can run a relatively normal race meeting at Hanging Rock," the general manager explained.

Under the present restrictions, spectators must remain seated, and cannot leave their seats and head down t the rails

to watch the horses, or visit the mounting yard or stabling area.

Attractive racing packages for New Year's Day at Kyneton have been arranged. It is pre-booking only, with no walk-up entry on the day permitted.

This will not be the first time a Hanging Rock meeting has been transferred to Kyneton over the years, for a variety of reasons.

The race club has reported an upsurge of interest in attending Kyneton on January 1, since the transfer decision was made.

Many people, both from the Macedon Ranges and Melbourne, have made New Year's Day at 'The Rock' a priority each year. Racing has been held at the popular venue since the 1880s.

Winner at Horsham

Romsey golf With the golf and bowls seasons being turned upside down the shared rooms at Romsey have become more than problematic.

For the first time in many, many months players were allowed to meet in the rooms but the combined numbers were too large for the after-play celebrations: the management committee agreed the golf club could use the rooms, and the bowlers would use the outside undercover area.

With the course refreshed, conditions for golf were good and several players took advantage as expected.

December medallist and the day's winner was Ryan Davies with 90-22-68, from Davey Kenney 89-20-69 and Rob Slade 93-24-69.

The women's winner was Lis Manktelow with 92-21-71.

The three NTP winners were Les Gaunt, Andrew Clement and Mal Mottram, with least putts (26) shared by Gaunt and John Freestone.

Presentations for the small number of annual events that had concluded also took place.

A small but dedicated group played in a stableford last Wednesday.

The dreaded corellas were back, with a flock of 80 seen around the 12th tee; hopefully they confine themselves to the fairways.

Congratulations and thanks to the club's volunteer workforce who have done a super job on and around the course all year.

Rob Slade (26) handicap won the stableford with 38 points, from Jenny Hartley 35 and Sherif Abdel-Sayed 30.

Kyneton trainer Helen White secured an early Christmas present when Fi Style finished strongly to win over 1200m at Horsham on Sunday. The six-year-old mare, ridden patiently back in the field by Dean Holland, started a $3.30 favourite and won by 1.5 lengths from Bellator. Raced by the White family, Fi Style now has two career wins from 17 starts, with prize money earnings of $53,800.

A special first century Bill West For a 17-year-old Lancefield cricketer, his first century on Saturday is a personal sporting achievement he will never forget.

Callum Sankey, listed to bat at number four against Sunbury United in the division two match in Lancefield Park, was stunned to find he was at the crease and facing a hat-trick on the third ball of the match.

United speedster Steve James dismissed Lancefield's Jack Morgan and Alan Sinclair with his first two deliveries, both snicking catches to the keeper.

Sankey survived the hat-trick, then soon settled in with experienced campaigner Mark Caton to add 137 runs before the latter departed for 57.

By this time the teenager was displaying a wide array of shots, and running hard between the wickets. He provided a difficult chance to the gully fieldsman on 85, otherwise the century was chanceless.

He retired on 102 (10 fours) as the Tigers finished with a healthy 6/214c.c. from 35 overs on the big ground.

What had made it extra special for Callum was the two avid spectators, both aged 81, watching every shot he played and providing plenty of verbal encouragement.

They were his grandfathers, Tom Sankey - a legendary Gisborne sportsman and lifetime Lancefield resident and retired sawmiller Terry Connors, who follows various sports.

A truly outstanding footballer, Tom Sankey is the only player to have won a record four Bowen Medals for fairest and best in the Riddell League; and he shone as a cricketer for Gisborne as well with bat and ball and behind the stumps -- so much so that he still plays cricket with the Victorian Over 70s side, with an occasional game with the Over 60s as well.

Now living in Lancefield, Tom recalls when he began playing as a 12-year-old, always retaining the urge to be competitive.

"It took me 20 years to make my first and only century (for Gisborne 1 against Gisborne 2) and I've played hundreds of matches, now Callum's done it at 17 so he's got plenty of chances ahead of him.

Tom also recalls being "robbed" of a second century when he was 99 not out and the captain declared in a match between Gisborne and Werribee fire brigades.

Callum, an apprentice plumber, seemingly has plenty of improvement ahead on both the cricket and football fields.

Parents Shane - past president of LCC and also a century maker who believed in quick scoring - and Kylie were equally as pleased as Tom and Terry.

Sunbury United batsmen floundered in the run chase, being bundled out for 48 as Tigers' coach Matt Bowden captured 4-10 with the new ball.

Footnote: In Club South on Saturday, opening bat Peter Sankey made 101 (18 fours, two sixes) before retiring as Gisborne compiled a winning 5/189.c.c. against Melton Centrals Red.

Bats collapse for Gisborne Century sinks Malmsbury Bill West Reigning premiers Gisborne suffered a shock batting collapse in McIntyre Cup cricket on Saturday.

At Gardiner Reserve, the Dragons star opener Mick Allen made a polished 74 (11 fours) from 69 balls but none of his teammates reached double figures.

A miserable 9/103 never threatened Bacchus Marsh's 6/165 c.c. (Porter 54, Wakefield 36 n.o. - Allen 2-21, McKenna 2-22).

Paceman Jared Taylor was the Marsh wrecker with 5-31.

Dynamic Sunbury United opener Dilan Chandima continued on his extraordinary batting blitz by scoring an unbeaten 197 (21 fours, eight sixes) in his side's 3/278c.c. from 40 overs against Romsey at Langama Park.

Chandima has now scored 539 runs in four matches, being dismissed once. And he bowls as well.

Romsey replied with a respectable 5/242 (W. Collins 72, C. Burkett 47, C. Day 44, B. Way 34).

In the other McIntyre Cup match, Woodend batsmen struggled to reach 9/112 c.c. (Greg Matthews 25) at Gilbert Gordon Oval, and East Sunbury cruised to victory

Safe return of basketball The Aussie Hoops program at the Kyneton Basketball Association successfully returned for term four.

Eight teams played in Bendigo. There were two U18 boys' teams, one U16 girls, two U16 boys, two U14 girls, and one U14 boys. Team numbers were unfortunately limited due to volunteer availability.Thanks goes to Ivonne and Gabriela for a great job running the event.

Expression of interest is available on the KBA website and Facebook for people interested in playing in the 2021 local junior domestic competition for boys and girls U10, U12 and U14.

The KBA will also be looking for coaches and helpers for this to succeed.

Malmsbury's division one grade cricketers were on good terms with themselves until Woodend's Marcus Stewart plundered an undefeated 121 (17 fours, two sixes) on Saturday.

Consecutive narrow losses have the Berries seventh on the ladder, needing to find form after the Christmas break to make the finals.

Malmsbury's north grade side was also involved in a nail-biter, edging out Lancefield in the last over in a match played at Tylden.

Sent in by the visitors, the Berries opening bats Chris Ganim and Parminder Singh began steadily against Woodend, with a brilliant 66 from Matt Cox and an unbeaten 36 from Dan Turner carrying the tally to 8/201 c.c. Paceman Callum Large shone with 4-39.

Woodend's early batsmen failed, and at 3-19 looked to be in strife.

Stewart, a proven top grade bat, then took complete control and his 121 not out came from 98 balls, with skipper Brett Gardner making 59. Woodend won with 6/204 and two balls to spare, and Cox and Ryder Blizzard each claiming two wickets.

Lancefield scored a respectable 8/193c.c. at Tylden as Malmsbury's Gavin 'Spud' Marstall claimed a career best 6-26 from seven overs.

Malmsbury's run chase was timed perfectly after Rilke de Podolinsky 63 and Adam Donnelly 30 set a good foundation.
