Authorities are urging people to take the self-isolation message seriously as Victoria steps up measures to flatten the curve in new cases of coronavirus.

Victoria has entered stage three of its response, with people facing fines of more than $1600 for breaching social-distancing rules.

Gatherings will be restricted to no more than two people except for members of your immediate household and for work or education.

At the time of going to press yesterday, there were 821 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Victoria, 29 people in hospital including four in intensive care, and four Victorians had died.

The vast majority of cases have been recorded in metropolitan Melbourne, but more than 100 have been recorded in regional Victoria. Most are attributed to returning travellers from overseas and those they have come into contact with but concern remains over cases of community transmission.

Mount Alexander Shire mayor Christine Henderson said everyone had an important role to play in helping stop community transmission.

“We are at the point now where we need

to stay at home, unless you have to go out for essential things like food, work or health reasons,” she said.

“This is not just about doing the right thing.

This is about taking action now that will save lives and reduce the pressure on our health system.

“The state and federal governments have announced some initial relief packages and we are expecting to find out more details on support packages and possible rent relief soon.

“We are also working with other health, government and emergency services to respond to this pandemic and coordinate support for our community.”

Road closed as visitors flout rules Police have closed the road to Mount Macedon’s Memorial Cross after visitors ignored Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s warnings not to visit the autumn leaves displays in the area over the weekend.

Hundreds of visitors ignored state and federal government recommendations to stay home due to the pandemic and visited Macedon’s Avenue of Honour and nearby gardens and parks.

Large electronic signs have been installed on the Calder Freeway and local roads, urging visitors to avoid the area.

Traffic management staff are in place near the Avenue of Honour and Centennial Park to ensure any traffic flows efficiently through the area, and Local Laws officers are enforcing parking restrictions.

Regular police patrols will take place to ensure visitors are not gathering in groups in public areas or flouting social distancing regulations.

Police are also actively conducting spot checks on returning travellers who should be in self isolation and are urging people to take the restrictions seriously and do the right thing.

Central Highlands Rural Health’s hospitals at Kyneton, Daylesford and Creswick, and aged-care facilities in Trentham, Daylesford and Creswick went into lockdown on Thursday.

CEO Maree Cuddihy said only rostered staff would be permitted to enter these facilities, and only after being screened for symptoms and risk of coronavirus.

While the hospitals are in lockdown their urgent care centres remain open for presentations.

Mr Strangward said it was unclear how long current construction work on the new loco stabling facility could continue in the face of anticipated further tightening of pandemic restrictions.

“Is the building industry going to shut down or are they going to keep on going throughout this?” he asked.

“I don’t know.

“The builders are still working on the loco shed. We’re still waiting on a permit for our carriage shed extensions. “That’s still tied up in red tape in Melbourne. But if we can proceed with that we will.”

The coronavirus pandemic has forced the Victorian Goldfields Railway to suspend all of its advertised passenger service until the end of June.

The VGR has also had to halt its project taking up the old disused main line track between Guildford and Castlemaine for recycling on part of its tourist line.

“We’re not happy with that,” VGR president Steve Strangward said.

“Some of the training organisations, the RTOs that we were going to use, have withdrawn their services. They’ve shut down so we’re restricted in some ways.

“We’ve gone back to just doing our regular track maintenance on our railway for the short term.”

But so far work is still progressing well to build the VGR’s new Castlemaine locomotive stabling facility where the roof could be seen rapidly going up over recent days.

And with passenger services on the vintage tourist rail attraction on hold due to COVID-19, it’s also potentially a prime chance for some valuable track maintenance work to get done.

Mr Strangward said the VGR hoped to secure federal government assistance to ensure it could pay staff to make the most of the chance to do more maintenance - like taking up slabs of track.

“It’s huge opportunity. We can rip up track and not have to put it back down,” the VGR president said.

“At the moment we’re still looking at what government support is going to come through to help keep employees on. If we can keep them on we can massively take advantage.”

The VGR president said he believed the track gangs could work outside safely.

“There’s certainly plenty of distancing between them in that job so I think they can work,” he said.

“Likewise in our workshop our fitter is working by himself still. A lot of the old volunteers have chosen not to come to work on the railway.

“They’re in the high-risk category so we’ve lost a lot of our workforce. We’re trying to keep the paid workforce gainfully employed,

Help register opens

An online help register has launched in the Macedon Ranges to support people during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kyneton Community House established the web portal that allows people to register their needs or offer assistance to others to be matched with someone nearby.

Kyneton Community House's Casey Grana said the register would assist many vulnerable community members in self-isolation or in need of extra support.

"It will work as a 'matchmaking' service where we will set people up with each other based on what help is needed and what people are willing to provide," she said.

Services highlighted include grocery shopping, dog walking and a friendly phone call.

Ms Grana said the register was developed in response to local residents who were seeking a platform to connect with others.

"We began getting calls from people offering to help others and we know from our work in the community that there are people that are isolated so we thought why not match people up," she said.

"Mostly, so far, we have had people feeling isolated and lonely so connecting with someone over the phone is a great way of alleviating that. We would encourage everyone to keep up the communication with friends, family and neighbours through phone calls, Face time, Skype or even old-fashioned letter writing."

Any assistance provided will be done with the health of each individual in mind and social distancing measures.

Scammers take advantage

Police and Scamwatch are warning locals to scammers who are adapting existing technology to play on people's fears around coronavirus and selling products claiming to prevent or cure the virus.

Since January 1, the ACCC's Scamwatch has received 94 reports of scams about coronavirus, and warns figures are starting to climb.

Scamwatch has received multiple reports of phishing scams sent via email or text message that claim to be providing official information on coronavirus but are attempts to try and obtain personal data.

Other scams include people receiving misinformation about cures for coronavirus and investment scams claiming coronavirus has created opportunities to

make money. A wide variety of scams reported include fake online stores selling products claiming to be a vaccine or cure for coronavirus, and stores selling products such as face masks and not providing the goods.

Kind town for doing business New web portal Kindtown is offering a platform for Kyneton businesses to give updates on their trading status as COVID-19 response continues to change.

Kyneton local Paul Tagell developed the digital directory to help businesses communicate changes to their services and assist community members in making decisions about supporting local trade.

"With people being instructed to self-isolate and reduce their interactions, it became obvious that local businesses would be hit hard by the necessary COVID-19 precautions," he said.

"Everyone wants local businesses to make it through this, but are also understandably anxious about leaving home. Being able to see who's open, and who's providing takeaway and pick-up options, will hopefully help people choose to use them a bit more frequently.

"The community response has been really wonderful. There's so many people looking to help each other get through this trying time."

Since Thursday there were 42 local businesses listed on the website and residents have praised the initiative.

Businesses have the option to login at any time to update their status and contact details are listed to the public. Mr Tagell said the website might develop over time to offer other resources as they became available.

Youth charged: armed robbery A 14-year-old male has been charged with armed robbery at Sankey Reserve in Gisborne.

Gisborne police responded to a 000 call on March 20 and located and arrested the offender nearby the scene.

Macedon Ranges Crime Investigation Unit has charged the male with armed robbery and weapons offences. He has been remanded in custody to appear at Bendigo Magistrates Court.

A 42-year-old man was arrested and charged with possessing marijuana and methyl amphetamine near Bullengarook and will appear in court this week.

Gisborne police arrested the man and discovered drugs in his car after responding to a call of a suspicious vehicle in Bullengarook.

Kyneton Contemporary Art Triennial to return In March 2021, the creative capital of central Victoria, Kyneton, will be immersed in unexpected artforms for the second iteration of the Kyneton Contemporary Art Triennial.

Presented by local arts collective Kyneton Contemporary Inc., and taking place over nine days, KCAT (pronounced kayCAT) celebrates the work of 11 contemporary Australian artists.

The event's theme is Holding the Circle an intersection of contemporary art, community, transmission and exchange - with the town of Kyneton at the core of inspiration.

New works by artists Ravi Avasti, Hannah Brontë, Michael Candy, Adam Lee, Eugenia Lim, Emily Parsons-Lord and Sara Morawetz, Steven Rhall, Simone Slee, Hanna Tai, and Katie West will be presented across a variety of unconventional sites across the town of Kyneton.

Intriguing and unexpected site-specific installations including sound, sculpture, painting, new media and performance will activate familiar locations while also providing curious art-lovers with access to places not normally open to public access.

Expect to experience art in a small country hall, a post-industrial factory, an abandoned historic building or even a motel

room. The popular Stockroom Gallery on historic Piper Street will be a key site to see art, and be part of workshops and events.

Leading up to KCAT, artists are invited to spend time in Kyneton, getting to know the local community, observing the character, ecology and culture of the town; a platform for inspiration, research and ideas for new work created specifically for the 2021 event.

Public programming, talks, workshops and events, will support the exhibitions around the township providing further insight into the artists and the nature of their art.

A special publication detailing the art presented in the inaugural KCAT has also been released.

Force Fields: Art, Architecture and Audience documents the first KCAT, which featured the work of 10 exciting Australian artists presented in primarily unconventional exhibition sites across the township of Kyneton. Think before you flush

Castlemaine’s Elissa Wilsher and Cas Davey of Mulberry’s Delicatessen have devised an innovative new way of doing business amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Local businesses are finding innovative ways to adapt amid the current coronavirus restrictions. One such businesses is Castlemaine’s Mulberry’s Delicatessen, which has been quick to respond to the crisis by developing a new phone and email based ordering and home delivery service.

The innovative new way of continuing to function rolled into action on Friday and Mulberry’s manager Cas Davey said she was delighted at the immediate response and support from customers.

“We bounced the idea around on Monday this week and we started working on it straight away,” she said.

“We took stock of what we had and what we could offer people. There’s a lot of uncertainty in what’s going to happen day to day - even hour to hour.

“It is a work in progress and at this time we’re taking orders by phone - for delivery on a Tuesday afternoon and a Friday afternoon.

“I will be able to do email orders as well for people who prefer to do that.

“We have published a list of all the things we have available on our website at the mo-

ment. So basically if you’re stuck at home and you really don’t want to go out or you can’t go out we will probably be able to help you out - obviously not fresh fruit and vegetables, but pretty much everything else.”

The Mulberry’s deli and adjoining Togs Cafe are both part of the same family business owned by Ms Davey’s sister and brotherin-law Elissa and Jason Wilsher.

Sadly, like many businesses nation-wide, they’ve been forced to put off some staff while they’ve been fortunate to be able to keep some on - notably including cooks.

“At this stage we’re hoping to be able to keep a couple of people employed on a parttime basis,” Ms Davey said.

And she said that if the new phone and net based order and delivery service really took off, they hoped to be able to start putting staff back on.

“I would think if we can grow the business in our local vicinity we would be able to bring back some of our staff,” she said.

“I just can’t say how wonderful people have been coming in with orders, but also people’s comments and show of support and enthusiasm for our effort has been really touching.”

Environment Protection Authority Victoria is urging people to ‘think before they flush’ as alternatives for toilet paper could put pressure on the state’s sewers and domestic wastewater systems.

The EPA says people should only flush ‘the three P’s’ down the toilet: pee, poo and toilet paper.

If Victorians don’t have toilet paper to use, then the alternatives should be disposed of in the main household waste bin.

The EPA warns sewers are not designed to handle wet wipes, tissues and paper towels. These materials clump together forming slimy thick mounds commonly called ‘fatbergs’ which cause blockages or damage to infrastructure. This leads to sewer spills that impact on the environment and can create a public health issue.

EPA deputy chief environmental scientist Dr Dan Evans said that while wet wipes might be marked as ‘flushable’ that didn’t guarantee that they would biodegrade and not cause pollution to our environment.

“Sewer spills of wet wipes, litter, paper towels and tissues can get caught up in vegetation in drains and cause water quality issues,” Dr Evans said.

“An increase in water pollution can be potentially harmful to animals, birds, fish and other aquatic life, as well as causing odour.”

‘Dog hotel’ approved at Langley A three-day hearing at VCAT resulted, and the decision to grant the permit -- with very precise conditions -- was handed down last week.

Two acoustic consultants gave detailed evidence, differing at times on the likely level of noise.

The tribunal member stated that domestic animal boarding with a ceiling of 36 dogs allowed would add to the existing agricultural activities on the site, which is in the farming zone.

Additional acoustic attenuation is required in addition to a 33-metre long, 2.5-metre high noise barrier wall.

VCAT stated the key issues were amenity impacts on adjoining residents, impacts on agricultural activities on adjoining land, and water quality impacts.

Goulburn-Murray Water indicated it supported the application. Wastewater is to be treated on site, apart

from solid faecal waste which will be collected and disposed of off-site.

The tribunal agreed with GMW that there would be no unacceptable impact on water quality or water yield, and stated barking dogs in rural areas.

VCAT found that the proposal to be an acceptable planning outcome on its merits, and the permit can 'run with the land', not be restricted to the just the present owner.

The tribunal member made reference to a previous Romsey Property Group Pty Ltd versus Macedon Ranges Shire Council case where noise impact was a key consideration.

The kennel building itself was described as being of a type "typical of sheds in the area", and significantly set back from the site boundaries.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has overturned a shire council planning refusal, paving the way for 'dog hotel/kennels' to go-ahead on a 20-acre property north of Kyneton.

Dogs will be housed in a building with 12 separate rooms opening onto a separate courtyard, each able to accommodate three dogs. There are to be separate exercise yards that can be used by five dogs at a time, under supervision.

Mount Alexander Shire Council and some residents of surrounding properties were concerned about potential noise impacts from barking dogs, particularly to horses, and visual impact, and the owner of the 20acre site at the corner of East Metcalfe-Langley Road at Langley then appealed against council's decision to VCAT.

Stablemates tread the boards Amy Hume Zulu and Sinatra are the envy of every horse paddock. It's not often equine stars get the chance to shine on stage at the Sydney Opera House.

The Newham stablemates threatened to steal the show as handsome steeds in Opera Australia's ambitious production of Attila.

Their commanding presence helped bring to life the legend of Attila the Hun and his marauding fifth-century forces.

Opera Australia's artistic director Lyndon Terracini said the pair was adored at the show's opening night on March 12.

"To have two magnificent horses in this magnificent production was something you rarely see and it had a tremendous effect on the whole show," Terracini said.

Zulu took to stage as the steed of Ukranian-born bass Taras Berezhansky, in the title role. The eight-year-old black Friesian is no stranger to the spotlight and is making a name for himself in competition dressage with his rider Nirrelle Somerville.

Entertainment king Sinatra (Frank) is a 10-year-old cremello quarter horse named for his stunning blue eyes. He carried Russian-born bass Gennadi Dubinsky as Pope Leo I. Both perform along leading female, soprano Natalie Aroyan, who has referred to them as "the stars of the show".

Indeed, the geldings held an impressive stage presence and were unperturbed by the bright lights, loud music and dramatic movements of performers.

It was the result of several months of preparation with Newham-based senior horse trainers Stephen Cox and Nirrelle Somerville from talent agency Paws on Film.

"This was a once in a lifetime experience," he said.

"I'm tipping there are not many train-

ers who get to say they have been on the Sydney Opera House stage with their horse for this kind of performance."

Riding lessons were also in store for Dubinsky and Berezhansky who got to know their co-stars before taking to the stage.

Zulu and Sinatra took part in seven rehearsals before the big opening and never failed to impress.

The pair were set to perform at all Sydney shows from March 12-28 and at the Arts Centre Melbourne from May 25-30, but COVID-19 precautions has seen these performances cancelled, along with Opera Australia's remaining season.

While Zulu and Sinatra had to farewell their opera co-stars earlier than expected they will never forget their Sydney Opera House adventure.

A small group of Kyneton volunteers are helping those in need and in self-isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic by cooking and delivering meals to residents in Kyneton and surrounds.

The group was started by a Kyneton resident who wanted to help the elderly, vulnerable and those who could not access supermarkets or food outlets while in self-isolation.

A group of around 12 volunteers now prepare home-cooked meals and coordinate deliveries to those in need.

The group is a community initiative and not associated with any associations or religious organisations. The free meals are cooked in home kitchens and dropped off to the doorsteps of those in need using gloves, in order to minimise contact with people.

Kyneton's Little Swallow café has also generously provided takeaway containers, meals and refrigeration to store the meals.

Since the group began on March 16, they have already delivered a range of meals including mushroom risotto, lamb ragu and pasta, and vegetable curries - to residents in Kyneton, Lauriston, Woodend and Carlsruhe areas.

If you are elderly, vulnerable or are in compromised health and not able to visit the supermarket for food and groceries, the group can help. Call or text 0490 015 402.

Kyneton Senior Citizens Club has postponed all activities until further notice due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Club secretary Ray Williams said the club was conscious of the severity of the virus and the impact it could have on everyone especially those over 80 with added health conditions.

"To alleviate loneliness all members have been contacted and given the option to have home-cooked meals delivered to their doorstep with a menu provided thanks to our chef and her assistant who provide homebased meals weekly," Ray said.

"This has been offered not only to assist with nutrition but as a means of outside contact.

"Loneliness can cause depression, illness and much more.

"We are fortunate to have a buddy system that works extremely well."

Ray said committee members were all directly in touch with other members and a newsletter would be implemented as a keep in touch.

"As we self-isolate, adapt to what's before us, pray for a time when all will be normal again, we urge all to cooperate and care for one another. That is truly Australian," he said.

The seed packs will improve the homegrown food supply and it's just the beginning for the Woodend Seed Library, says its creator Kylie Swain.

"Everyone has gone crazy for gardening and I think it's amazing," she said.

The Woodend local has noticed a resurgence in home gardening as people look to ways they can become less reliant on supermarkets.

"Sourcing food has been difficult for some people over the past few weeks during the coronavirus pandemic and people have thought about what they can do in their own backyard," she said.

"There is so much that people in the Macedon Ranges can grow at this time and it is also giving families something to do at home during the school holidays."

Ms Swain launched the seed library earlier this month to allow people free access to a variety of seeds and foster a love of gardening.

As part of its opening she has distributed about 150 veggie seed starter packs to those seeking to begin or improve on their home-grown food supply, but the seed library is about more than just food. It will give locals access to a range of seeds for flowers, trees, shrubs and much more.

As the seed library community grows, Ms Swain hopes to host regular community events and talks to share tips and ideas for the garden.

Ms Swain says the drop-off and pickup points at the library won't be used as COVID-19 precautions step up but she is working on new ways to get seeds to people and will keep the community informed via social media.

Fruit-picking is hard manual labour but Harcourt Valley Vineyard has seen a sudden influx of offers and is returning a favour with this year's harvest.

The team has offered this season's work exclusively to local hospitality staff facing an employment slump in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vineyard owner Kye Livingstone said hospitality was among the first industries impacted in the government's necessary clamp-down on social gatherings and trade restrictions to reduce health risks.

He said the vineyard's offer was a small gesture but one way the team could show its appreciation to the sector that had supported it for so long.

"We know it's not much but it's something," Mr Livingstone said.

"Like the majority of other farms in the area, we use contract workers who fly in from overseas purely to work on farms and meet the shortage of workers.

"Since hospitality staff are vital to our industry we thought we could at least offer them this work to help them in these tough times."

More than 40 people responded to the callout on social media and, while the vineyard couldn't accept them all, 17 workers were given the opportunity.

Harcourt marriage celebrate Vicki Polglase lost four months of bookings as a result of the pandemic and was among those to sign up.

"I just want to express how thankful I am and how very impressed I am with their genuine concern for others within our community and their actions to support us," she said.

Losing work, with a mortgage and construction mortgage on the line, Castlemaine's Ashley McKinnon was also happy to take up the offer.

She said the intent to help local residents during a difficult and uncertain time had earned her "high respect and gratitude".

Hi there cyclists, and would-be cyclists, Pedalling Peta back again.

Recently, I had the pleasure of watching a number of young cyclists at play, learning about bike control and traffic awareness in an exciting and highly motivating way.

The occasion was the Otways Oddysey, a mountain bike event held at the international-standard Forrest cycling complex.

Several hundred competitors of all ages raced around a maze of mostly bush trails, climbing and descending quite steeply, over distances ranging from 30kms to 100kms.

This was all very exciting, but the highlight for me was the casual play of a group of junior cyclists ages ranging from six to 16 years in a gully behind the camping ground.

At each end of the day, there was a steady stream of kids racing down into the gully, flying (at varying heights) over a simple mounded jump.

With kids on bikes going everywhere, the potential for chaos was obvious. The jump-run began among a small forest of mature trees, the landing area on the far side of the gully was equally congested by nature, and the kids displayed remarkable mutual awareness and respect, and bike control. And, yes, a couple of minor collisions happened among the trees, no great harm done, and the kids were all the more watchful after that.

The experience was significant because the young kids were learning and demonstrating two very basic and important bike-riding skills.

Cycle control and environmental awareness are safety fundamentals.

Away from competing vehicle traffic, but surrounded by trees and other cyclists, these young people were able to focus on their bikes and each other in a very enjoyable play session. There was minimal adult supervision. A couple of admiring parents stood well back. It was just the kids and their bikes, and a whole lot of valuable learning going on.

Once again, you might ask, "So? What's the message here?"

Classic basic skills training of any physical activity is best conducted without competition, in a non-threatening environment. Consider the bush, bike paths, or areas away from roads and traffic as the preferred place to learn basic bike skills.

Learning to deal with traffic should come later. We are hoping to improve off-road cycle paths in our shire.

So much more than memory loss Cherry Servis Although he died nearly six years ago, I had lost my husband to Alzheimer's disease more than 10 years before that but the stress of caring for someone with this insidious disease is still clearly imprinted on my memory.

The nights with little or no sleep, being prodded awake with an "are you asleep?" or the night when I was awakened by the glare of the overhead light to find him shaved, dressed in his business suit and ready to go off to a very important meeting the clock showed 3.15am.

People think that Alzheimer's (which is one of more than a hundred forms of dementia) is only a question of forgetfulness or repetitive questioning, but it's so very much more. There are many symptoms that aren't spoken about. My husband's earliest symptom was a change in his gait. From being a man who walked tall and so fast that I often had to run beside him to keep up, he started to shuffle and scuff, forgot how to stroll and couldn't walk down gentle slopes without holding on to me like grim death.

In his stubbornness he wouldn't put in his hearing aids; "there was nothing wrong with his hearing, people these days mumble and don't enunciate clearly"; and "the TV volume wasn't working properly that's why it needed to be set at 92".

If it wasn't lack of sleep, it was stress stress at not being able to go to the toilet without a constant banging on the door and

"where are you?". Stress when trying to make a telephone call became a nightmare with him trying to grab the handset, or writing strange messages to pass on.

Stress with his lack of inhibition when out, talking animatedly to total strangers, or sitting down next to them in a restaurant.

Stress trying to explain to him that sadly, he mustn't go up to small children in the street and start chatting to them, while apologising and explaining to terrified parents that he wasn't a paedophile, it was just his disease that was at work. The stress of dealing with his kleptomania - returning cutlery, glasses or books to their rightful owners. What an embarrassment!

He developed the need to go out for a drive every day. He couldn't drive himself without getting lost and even clocked more than 50kms just to go to pick up the newspaper. His driving became so erratic, one moment crawling along at 55km/h then the next speeding at 120! The final event (that much to his anger meant he needed to hand in his licence), was not being able to discern what Keep Left meant on turning into a street with a traffic island, and that was after almost going down the off ramp onto the freeway near Geelong with a large truck speeding towards us.

It is so very sad when loved ones who have always had incredibly good memories for every detail of their lives; who could learn huge reams of lines for a play; develop the need to have their memories written down for them, not as their own thoughts, but because they just can't remember the

name of that man they worked beside for 10 years, or that devoted secretary's name.

The change in empathy was another early symptom of my husband's demise. This was very evident on the day when a dear friend's daughter had tragically succumbed to a massive heart attack. He just couldn't fathom why I was so upset; this from a man who had cried uncontrollably when one of our dogs died unexpectedly.

The wandering tendencies of some folk with a dementia diagnosis can be incredibly scary. My husband had been attending a meeting with me in a building immediately opposite where our daughter and her family lived, and he decided to "pop over to see her" while I remained behind.

When I walked over to pick him up, no one had seen him. It was winter and dark, with no pavements to walk upon. It took two hours of driving frantically around the district before I finally found him back at the building because he had got so distressed that thankfully, he decided to knock on a stranger's door and ask them to take him to the building that he could describe, but couldn't find. From then on I carried a photograph of him, and needed to use it more than once.

Life can be funny sometimes too. I still wonder about the reaction of the poor person who lived two doors along from my daughter when they found a trailer load of garden cuttings dumped in the middle of their driveway - because our daughter was going to have a bonfire and had offered to include our garden waste!

These incidents and traits are told to you, dear reader, on the chance that you may relate to them because you are going through similar situations in your life; in the hope that in your isolating situation, caring for your loved one, you will realise that in the Macedon Ranges there is at least one volunteer group who understands, empathises, is not judgmental and exists to support you and help you navigate this very bureaucratic world. We offer an opportunity for a brief respite in your caring role, chatting sociably with others who understand what you are saying and feeling. A chance to have a good cry, or to laugh and relax, as well as learn through shared experiences.

Woodend Lifestyle Carers Group is there for you. We truly understand because we have lived or are living with a loved one whose life has been crushed by this awful disease.

With our ageing population and the rapid increase in dementia there is a desperate need for the stigma to be removed, and for communities to be as understanding as they are when a friend develops cancer.

Dementia is the umbrella term for a number of neurological conditions, of which the major symptom includes a global decline in brain function.

It is a condition that has been noted in people for hundreds of years.

Dementia was a relatively rare occurrence before the 20th century as fewer people lived to old age in pre-industrial society. It was not until the mid-1970s that dementia begun to be described as we know it today.

We now know dementia is a disease symptom and not a normal part of ageing. There are more than 100 diseases that may cause dementia. The most common causes of dementia include Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies.

Although the risk of getting dementia increase as we age, people in their 40s and 50s can also have dementia. The term 'younger onset dementia' is used to describe any form of dementia diagnosed in people under the age of 65.

Dementia is the second leading cause of death of Australians.

In 2016 dementia became the leading cause of death of Australian women, surpassing heart disease which had been the leading cause of death for both men and women since the early 20th century.

In 2017, dementia remained the first leading cause of death of women, and the third leading cause of death of men. In 2020, there are an estimated 459,000 Australians living with dementia and an estimated 1.6 million people involved in the care of someone living with dementia.

Currently an estimated 250 people are joining the population with dementia each day. The number of new cases of dementia will increase to 318 people per day by 2025 and more than 650 people by 2056.

Three in 10 people over the age of 85 and almost one in 10 people over 65 have dementia.

In 2020, there are an estimated 27,800 people with younger onset dementia, expected to rise to 29,350 people by 2028 and 41,250 people by 2058.

Nature can help calm

We are lucky in this region to have beautiful parks and gardens full of glorious autumn colours to enjoy during this time of social isolation. With many of us feeling anxiety and fear getting out into nature can help calm us.

Spending time outdoors has been scientifically proven to reduce stress levels, calm you, and help with sleep, something we all need during these difficult times.

Getting vitamin D can elevate mood, improve blood flow and lower blood pressure.

Exposure to natural light can help with regulating your body's melatonin production.

Melatonin is a hormone that controls your body's internal clock and is affected by access to light. The right amount helps you get a good night's sleep.

With many of us turning to social media and endlessly scrolling through feeds our anxiety levels can go up and

concentration levels down.

Unplugging from it for a while each day can be helpful in relaxing and unwinding.

A study by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health found that a natural environment allowed people to leave the stressors of their everyday lives behind and instead focus their minds on something more pure. By centring your mind, you can relax your body.

Being out in nature gives your brain time to recharge.

When people are in a daydreaming state - something easier to achieve out in nature - their brains settle into what scientists call the default mode network. DMN is a complex circuit of coordinated communication between parts of the brain and is essential to mental processes that develop our understanding of human behaviour, instil an internal code of ethics, and help us realise our identities.

A recent Dutch study suggests that spending time in nature and performing repetitive tasks such as gardening can fight stress better than other leisure activities. In the study, one group of people was asked to read indoors after completing a stressful task while the other group was instructed to garden for 30 minutes. The gardeners not only reported being in a better mood than the readers, but also had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

The exercise that generally goes hand-in-hand with spending time out of doors (walking, bike riding, etc.) spurs the production of endorphins, your brain's 'feelgood' neurotransmitters - this is the sensation often referred to as a 'runner's high'.

With increased endorphin levels, you'll feel calmer, clearer headed and more relaxed.

So before winter sets in why not head out to some of our beautiful parks and gardens and take a deep breath and enjoy some of autumn's display of colours!

Castlemaine Landcare Group members proceeded with their planned working bee last Sunday week while being careful to observe social distancing rules.

The volunteers laid out 300 stakes so that the contractor could come last Friday to dig the holes for the group's intended May planting - set at this time for Mother's Day (May 10) but could be subject to change related to COVID-19.

The group also scattered their remaining first-year murnong (Microseris walteri) seed into prepared trial areas. Why right now for seeding the murnong?

Fifty murnong (aka yam daisies) were purchased from Frances Cincotta in October 2019 to start the group's 'nursery' and the seeds were collected in the following couple of months.

Murnong seeds lose viability after a few months so needed to be planted now - or rather, scattered onto the soil so that the seeds get the natural light they need to germinate.

At this working bee, in recognition of the importance of avoiding the spread of the coronavirus, members observed the practices of self-isolation with members who were unwell asked not to attend, social distancing, and hygiene in line with their duty of care.

National Youth Science Forum

By Scarlett S, Yr 11 Over the January school holidays, I attended the National Youth Science Forum. The NYSF is a summer school program dedicated to enriching the lives of students through science. My session occurred in Brisbane and lasted for ten days. Over these ten days I was involved in many activities, which either helped in developing my science communication skills or increased my interest in science.

My favourite session was the visit to the Sea Jellies exhibition in Sea World. At this exhibit, my interest group, Carson Environmental Science, went behind the scenes and learned the intricacies behind the PhD students’ projects. One project was about investigating the effect of pesticides on a species of Jellyfish called the Upside-Down Jellyfish, also known as the Cassiopea. The program also allowed me to make lifelong friends from all around the country. These friends are utterly amazing and have allowed me to better understand science and improve my science communication skills.

I highly recommend any Year 11 student who has an interest in science to apply to attend the forum.

From Beach to Bush

For students in Year 10, 2020 started off in English with an assessment task. We were tasked to write a short story based either around a bush setting or a beach setting. Here are some snippets of the amazing work created by some of the students: “At dusk, a small boat cuts through the surface of the lake. The boat slowly jams its nose into the river bank. The tin boat rocks as a filthy, unshaven man steps off in search of a solid tree stump. He ties a thick knot around the stump. As the slack in the rope tightens, small grains of sand fall from it. The figure disappears with an old esky in his left hand and, in his other, a small flashlight releasing a weak light source on the narrow pathway. After some time he sees the soft, yellow glow of a candle in the distance.”

A doctor walks over to them a few minutes later, and says “John suffered a severe concussion, and a big knock to the head. He’s going to be fine, just look after him for the next 10 days.” The relief and happiness on George and his mother’s face were priceless.”

Wednesday 11 March was definitely a day to remember.

The sun was out and the weather was hot. The annual swimming carnival was a great way to split up the term.

It was great to see everyone participating and getting involved, whether that was swimming, cheering on your friends or helping out with the Mercy@Work food stalls.

The Year 12 students showed off their incredible and unique costumes. Congratulations to Gabrielle for winning the best costume and a special mention to Knox, Henry and Harrison who were the runners up.

Congratulations to Chisholm House, yet again taking the win for the day. Another huge thank you to all the teachers involved; marshalls, timers, supervisors, organisers and MCs. Another special thank you to Mr Zanic for organising the entire day. The day ran smoothly, and we wish all the students’ luck with the next round at the interschool competition.

Embracing Autism at Sacred Heart

The College was pleased to welcome Chris Varney from the ICAN Network on Thursday 12 March. Chris is a young man, on the Autism Spectrum (in his words he is ‘proudly Autistic’), who has made it his mission to help young people, their families and their teachers understand about how it feels to be Autistic and to think I CAN, not I CAN’T. Chris met with our teachers after school to offer practical strategies, to build understanding and to inspire us to get the best out of this very diverse and interesting group of young people. He stayed on at night to talk to a wide and varied group of parents who came from all over the Macedon Ranges and from many different schools. He offered wonderful insights into his world of growing up ‘a bit different’. Chris, through his story telling, was very generous, honest and open about the challenges he faced growing up and he shared with us his efforts to support

young people in building pride, confidence and selfacceptance.

The highlight of Chris’ visit for me, was sharing lunch with Chris and a group of students who voluntarily came along to talk about Autism – what it means, how it feels, how brothers and sisters are impacted and how we can help each other feel comfortable conversing about it.

These young people showed incredible bravery in coming along, and we soon found comfort in sharing stories and experiences with a group who ‘get it.’ We all had the chance to contribute to a safe, informative and interesting discussion, where the young people could feel valued and listened to in a non-judgmental and accepting forum.

Sacred Heart College has partnered with the ICAN Network in 2020 and we look forward to more groups like this supporting our young people

Through your column may I please express my appreciation to all staff at Castlemaine Health, CHIRP, Mount Alexander Shire Council and the many community groups that are working tirelessly to prepare for and minimise the impact of COVID-19 on our community.

Observing this goodwill and cooperation, far beyond government guidelines, is truly heartening.

My thoughts are also with our small businesses and the self-employed who are simultaneously trying to remain viable.

I know that everyone who can will give their support, including through takeaway and online sales.

There are so many things beyond our control but we can focus on those small things that we can.

As individuals, through the simple act of self-isolation and careful hand-washing, we have the power to stop this virus sooner rather than later.

If we had accepted W.H.O.’s suggestions of over a month ago, or more recently even accepted some of our own doctors’ advice, then everyone except essential services could have been sent home to self quarantine for two weeks and call it annual leave or whatever. Then early April would see the nation getting better.

Small government, as is the desire of the Neo-liberals, has allowed COVID-19 to spread a good deal quicker, for example allowing thousands of passengers off liners without a check. This is where the majority of virus patients have originated.

Possibly long queues of unfortunate people crowded together outside Centrelink offices would encourage cross infection too.

Fortunately for us Victoria is leading the way in managing COVID-19. The next few weeks are going to be fascinating in a macabre way!

The notice titled ‘Ten ways to reduce your risk of coronavirus’ (Midland Express March 17), advising ‘Don’t wear a face mask if you are well’, implies there could be some risk attached to the wearing of masks by well people. Other sources have claimed that the wearing of surgical masks does not prevent inhalation of infected droplets.

As a former nurse highly trained and experienced in infection control I know from practical experience that this is incorrect.

The coronavirus is spread by droplet infection.

That is, when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or simply breaths out, infected droplets of exhaled moisture can reach, and be breathed in, by another person, whose body can then incubate and develop the disease. The wearing of a cover such as a mask or scarf over a well person’s nose and mouth acts as protective barrier to such exhaled droplets being breathed in by the well person.

At the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where I trained and worked, surgical masks worn by us during our care of patients with tuberculosis (also spread by droplet infection) were very successful in preventing transference of the disease to us.

Social distancing is impossible for many: public transport users, shop assistants, shoppers, etc.

Masks are the answer. Mandated mass wearing of masks would provide a huge barrier to the passing and receiving of the virus.

Can any politician or health official say what harm the wearing of masks could do when worn by the well? Surely, with infection rates rising despite present measures, surely face mask are worth trying.

Temporary closure

Following the government’s announcement of further restrictions, the board and management of Kyneton Bushland Resort have decided to temporarily close the resort from March 27 to April 30, 2020 in the best interests of guests, staff and the wider community.

The closure will be reassessed before the end of April.

In the coming week we will be contacting members who have bookings during this time to discuss their options.

A better solution?

May I ask - in a kind and respectful way - for the planned burns that are to be carried out at Castlemaine’s Kalimna Park in autumn 2020 to be postponed until the winter months when possibly more than half of Castlemaine’s residential population will hopefully not be socially isolated, meaning obeying the law, at home.

Planning is the word that springs to mind readily, as I read a notification letter handdelivered to my mail box today.

There’s already been, during the past many years of planned burns, an unhealthy nose, throat and lung outcome for many people as autumn days and skies have been filled with smoke pollution failing to dissipate because there was not a breath of wind. This is the plight of asthmatics and people with health-threatening, breathing difficulties, during ‘planned’ burn-offs in autumn.

There is strong evidence to support an intensive mulching program each year instead, as a much better long-term solution for the problem of accumulated forest litter. And for logs that are cut up, the nearby residents would be thrilled to be able to receive additional wood supplies to stoke their combustion heaters in winter.

Perhaps it’s timely to begin a better, more environmentally sustainable (and less polluting) solution?

Mental health support

Georgie Harman, chair, Beyond Blue Beyond Blue welcomes the Australian Government’s $1.1 billion immediate investment in more telehealth, mental health and family supports for those affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

As part of a $74 million mental health package, Beyond Blue will receive $10 million for a dedicated national mental health support service related the coronavirus outbreak.

The new COVID-19 Mental Health Support Service, from Beyond Blue, will offer free information, counselling and referrals online and by phone.

It will provide options ranging from coping and wellbeing advice to digital self-help tools and counselling by mental health professionals for all Australians around the clock.

Beyond Blue will rapidly build and launch the new service, in partnership with Medibank Health Solutions and Accenture. The service will be continually updated with new information, and enhanced with other tools and supports, over the coming weeks and months.

Over the past week there has been a 30 per cent increase in calls and emails to Beyond Blue’s existing 24/7 Support Service and one in three contacts were from people directly impacted by the coronavirus.

In addition to the Commonwealth’s $10 million, Beyond Blue will direct a $5 million donation by Medibank to the new COVID-19 Mental Health Support Service to provide as much capacity as possible to support Australians.

The Commonwealth’s broad package also includes $669 million towards Medicare subsidies for telehealth, including mental health consultations for all Australians, and funding for Lifeline, Kids Helpline and a range of family violence and emergency relief supports for households.

This pandemic is having profound impacts on the mental health and wellbeing of many Australians - we are seeing that with our current services.

People are looking for support to cope with the effects of widespread anxiety and uncertainty, self-isolation and loneliness, family stress, and business collapse, job loss and financial hardship caused by COVID-19.

This new and dedicated service, which we will work around the clock to build, will offer 24/7 online self-help tips and tools to help people cope and manage, professional counselling by phone, easy access to Beyond Blue’s online forums for peer-to-peer support, and navigate people to a range of other services and tools.

Beyond Blue has created a range of resources about COVID-19 and mental health at beyondblue.org.au The online forum Coping during the Coronavirus outbreak discussion thread is already up and running and is attracting an average of 2000 views a day.

Mental health professionals will continue to be available on the Beyond Blue Support Service via phone 24/7 on 1300 22 4636 or via beyondblue.org.au/get-support for online chat (3PM - 12AM AEST or email responses within 24 hours).

Shades of Gray Gallery and Garden was all set to launch its highly anticipated autumn exhibition but given the current situation will now be taking the fabulous new works online.

Castlemaine artists Peter and Chelly Gray have once again been toiling away on some amazing new works and can’t wait to share their latest pieces with the public.

The exhibition can be explored on their Instagram and on their brand new website and is set to be officially launched on April 4 so be sure to mark the date on your calendar.

The exhibition runs though until May 10.

Peter said once again there were lots of new works to discover including a range of new wreaths, metal flowers for the garden, sculptures and their ever-popular birdhouses.

“All work will be available to view on Instagram as our gallery and garden are closed until further notice,” he said.

“Works can be purchased online via Instagram or the website and we are happy to post it out or deliver it locally.”

“Stallholders bring a bucket with lots of soapy water in it and each time they receive cash (using a disposable glove), they drop it in the bucket. Any change given out must have been pre-washed in soapy water.”

There will be no tastings or samples of food offered at the market and no plants or live animals for sale.

Patrons will be asked to shop and leave as quickly as is practical with no congregating within the market.

There will be hot food available; however, everyone will be asked to take this home or move into Victory Park to eat (maintaining their 1.5m physical distance from one another) There will be coffee; however, it will be moved to the Victory Park side of the Ray Bradfield Room to allow for more room for more people to wait for service and also comply with the physical distance requirement.

“There may be other restrictions we implement as we take guidance from health officials and monitor best practice at other markets,” Chris said.

“We will endeavour to spread the stalls to allow more space in between to ensure we manage your health and safety.”

The monthly Castlemaine Farmers Market is held on the first Sunday of the month from 9am to 1pm, and the CFM Weekly is held every Wednesday from 3.30-6.30pm.

The Castlemaine Farmers Market still has approval from Mount Alexander Shire Council and the Victorian State Government to proceed with the monthly market on Sunday April 5.

It will now be held at the Western Oval, across Forest Street from its usual spot, allowing for greater distance between stalls.

To further ensure the safety of everyone who attends, the market is applying some stringent health and safety practices and protocols. Market manager Chris Hain said this would include enforcing the 1.5-metre physical distancing requirement.

“We will have a volunteer with a PA regularly reinforcing the personal responsibility to maintain physical distance,” Chris said.

“Indicative markers will be placed on the ground to demonstrate the required distance.

“Every stallholder will be required to have hand sanitiser and use disposable gloves for handling of food.

“We will also provide hand wash stations for the public throughout the market and eliminate close queuing for service (1.5m rule will apply).

“Card/Paywave transactions are strongly preferred. If cash is absolutely necessary then stallholders are asked to follow the most stringent cash handling protocol.

“We have already implemented this at the weekly market and it works.

CFA and scouts fire up again

You would be forgiven for thinking that Kyneton's Scout Hall recently burned down.

There were reports on social media that a mass of fire trucks were onsite and that smoke was bellowing from the Hall.

This was true in part, but the reason for all the action was less dramatic, but very exciting for Kyneton's local Scouts.

Kyneton CFA Brigade had teamed up with 1st Kyneton Scout Group to conduct a training session, which saw brigade members tasked with finding the hidden cub scouts and leaders in a hall filled with non-toxic smoke.

All parties were informed before the exercise, and the youth members at 1st Kyneton were eager to participate in what will no doubt be an unforgettable experience.

"We were so lucky to be able to be part of this," said Corinne from 1st Kyneton Scouts.

"It was a great opportunity on both sides, where the CFA gained valuable experience in a real life setting and our Cubs got to be part of not only helping out our local brigade mates, but we saw how they could listen to instruction and remain calm under pressure.

"Hopefully it stands them in good stead

should they ever find themselves in that situation."

Corinne said seeing the big yellow suits come in with all their gear and breathing apparatus on was overwhelming for kids.

"This has definitely taken away that fear, and it's a testament to their leader Sarah Hawkes," she said.

"A real role model, ensuring the cubs were safe and having fun during the exercise.

"The firies were the heroes in this story though, and it was great to see a good mix of male and female firefighters too.

"It really gave us confidence that our local brigade is up to any task. We can all sleep a lot better knowing that, I think."

Brigade captain Josh Gamble said it was not often the brigade was allowed to use an unfamiliar premises to train and undertake live search and rescue techniques with a simulation of smoke throughout.

"The cubs on the night were great. They followed their training and stayed low in the simulated smoke, didn't panic and were extracted from the building safely," he said.

"The brigade would like to thank the scouting community of 1st Kyneton Scout Group, including the cubs, leaders and parents."

Bill West Three of the 14 Cricket Victoria's 2019-2020 A Sport for All awards have gone to clubs/individuals within the Gisborne District Cricket Association.

Gisborne Cricket Club took out the award for the Inclusion and Diversity Initiative of the Year, and club dynamo Rachael Lineham received the Junior Cricket Initiative of the Year.

In addition, Gisborne CC was runner-up to Edinburgh CC in the Community Cricket Club of the Year of the Award.

Young and motivated Romsey cricket enthusiast Chelsea McCarthy was selected as the Young Leader of the Year.

Cricket Victoria announced the state-wide winners on March 24, and GDCA president Rob McIntyre added congratulations from the board, acknowledging of the recogni-

tion, and efforts of all involved.

Gisborne Cricket Club has completed a tremendous season on and off the field, with the Cricket Victoria awards following on the club's McIntyre Cup premiership.

"It's unbelievable. Thanks must go to all who have given up their time to make good things happen," Dragons' vicepresident Brett Vernon said.

"There's a lot of great people in our club, and we have been working hard to help and develop cricketers at all levels ‌ we have had very positive feedback during the season and will be continuing this progress next season."

The vice-president said Rachael Lineham and Scott Vernon had been mainstays in their important roles, setting a fine leadership example.

Rachael is an integral part of the Gisborne club, where she coordinates 96 children and parents in the Woolworths Cricket Blast program, engaging the senior players to come along and help the kids learn. Rachael has been

Oliver Racing re-locates Bill West After several years at a large racehorse training complex just south of Romsey, Luke Oliver (pictured) has re-located to the multimillion Cranbourne Training Centre.

His move to Cranbourne earlier this month was highlighted with three winners in three days ( last Friday, Saturday and Sunday) at Pakenham, Wodonga and Sale.

Oliver Racing has continued to build its training and business profile, moving from Caulfield to Romsey in 2017, with Oliver then looked on as one of the up-andcoming trainers in the state. He has now chalked up over 500 winners.

The stable produced 39 winners last season, and the treble over the weekend took this season's tally to 15.

Prior to Oliver arriving to training at the Kerrygail Farm property, the complex was used for some years by successful veteran trainer Leon Corstens, now at Flemington.

There's a keepsake brilliant video clip of trackwork during Oliver's time at Romsey, with a kangaroo bouncing past a lone galloper, provoking some hilarious online comments.

Racing conducted several open days, and turned over quite a large number of young horses, offering new owners a chance to become involved in the sport.

Then the long trip to Wodonga paid off on Saturday, when apprentice Mikela Laurence won on Unshackled in a barnstorming finish.

Unshackled started at long odds, as did Florida Dream at Sale on Sunday, with Beau Mertens having the winning ride. The four-year-old is likely to advance to a mid-week metropolitan race over 1800m.

Cranbourne Turf Club congratulated Oliver on producing his first winners as a Cranbourne trainer.

"We're very fortunate to work with a great club, and to have these world class facilities," Oliver commented.

He said he could not thank the club enough for what it has done to enable Oliver Racing horses settle into the new environment.

"We appreciate all the support we have received from the people of Romsey and district during our time there," he added.

While the stable has been able to retain some of its Romsey area employees, others have had to relinquish their connections due to the distance factor to Cranbourne.

Oliver Racing has around 70 thoroughbreds on its books.

Bushfire relief golf Kyneton Golf Club members got talking about the needs of their fellow golfers in bushfire-affected areas and decided that Mallacoota would be the ideal club to give a helping hand to.

Mallacoota was greatly impacted by recent bushfires and is facing ongoing business and economic hardship.

Kyneton Golf decided a fundraising day was the way to go and it was well attended with more than 70 of

After being inspired to start a girls' cricket team in Romsey, Chelsea McCarthy sent an email to Macedon Ranges Mayor Janet Pearce asking that a girls' cricket program be supported.

The council allocated $1500 through a community grant last August, and a girls' program was implemented, with Romsey fielding an Under 13 team for the first time.

One highlight during the season for the girls was a bus trip backed by Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia to see a women's Big Bash match, with Chelsea 'spinning the bat' before the match.

Country Week coordinator steps down Geoff Briggs (pictured) has stepped down as coordinator of Bendigo Country Week bowls.

At the curtailed 50th Country Week the week before last, he was congratulated by many participants on his untiring work in this role over the past 17 years.

Briggs was a premiership player for Kilmore in the Riddell Football League many years ago.

Only the pairs were completed at Bendigo during County Week before the fours were called off as a precautionary measure due to the COVID-19 situation.

Bowls Victoria and Bowls Australia has strongly recommended all bowls cease until further notice, leaving pennant competitions in some parts of Victoria uncompleted.

Kyneton Golf's Colin Schmidt and Adrian Plowman (s) won the APIA Pot of Gold award at Country Week, by having the largest winning margin in sectional play.

Schmidt and Plowman excelled by toppling a Swan Hill pair by 25 shots.

Brian and Peter Linehan (Lancefield) won their section but lost in an early play-off.

Pairs winners were Jay Hawker and Rhys Jeffs (Winchlesea) from Stef Wereszsuk and Keith Topp (Beaufort).
