Almost exactly 12 months ago, AFL women's football superstar Madison Prespakis visited training at Romsey with the prime message of "You Can Do It" for the captivated audience of junior Redbacks. And Maddy, now 19, rocketed into national footy folklore last week by winning the AFLW best and fairest medal for 2020 -- with 15 votes (all best afield) in seven games for Carlton. The medal is the equivalent of the AFL's Brownlow. Maddy's fame has spread far and wide, with massive coverage since the vote count. Her brilliant football as a midfielder or onballer at the top level is already legendary, and she is yet another example of a player with an indigenous background reaching the very top in her chosen sport. She will never forget how her career began at Romsey's Auskick and then the local club's junior sides through to the very elite level. Romsey hopes to field U13, U15 and U18 girls' teams for the first time this season -- if it ever gets underway -- and the junior club's message to potential players was "Are you the next Maddy Prespakis? Or do you just want to learn how to kick the footy and have a lot of fun with your girlfriends?" Prespakis is not the only district junior to make a big impact in the AFLW. Trentham's Jenna Bruton has already played in a premiership side and won her club's best and fairest in the past three seasons. See more about the inspiring journey of Prespakis and Bruton on Page 39. Photo: AFL Photos, Michael Willson

Sirens sound
WYNNSDAY Since the first vineyards were planted by Scottish pioneer John Riddoch in 1891, Wynns Coonawarra Estate has built a reputation as the Coonawarra region’s pre-eminent wine producer. With the longest-established vineyards in the region, Wynns’ history is entrenched in making award winning wines, capturing the true essence of the region from the districts’ famous ‘terra rossa’ soils. In the mid 1950’s Melbourne artist Richard Beck was commissioned to produce a woodcut of the winery facade. This illustration has appeared on every Wynns Coonawarra Estate label since, making it one of Australia's most recognised wine symbols.
Usually selling for $16.99 these wines are on promotion for 2 weeks only.

At 5.40pm last Wednesday evening, many stood united across the state to remember the fallen Victoria Police officers who tragically lost their lives one week earlier at that time. Alarms and sirens sounded for four cycles at CFA stations in honour of the four officers who were killed beside the Eastern Freeway at Kew while going about their duty. The idea to sound the sirens originated with Kyneton Fire Brigade, with other brigades joining in to take part. Kyneton Captain Josh Gamble said that each time the siren sounded, the community took a moment to reflect and remember the sacrifice made by Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Constable Josh Prestney, Constable Glen Humphris, and Senior Constable Kevin King "On behalf of the members of the Kyneton Fire Brigade, we will remember. Rest in peace," Mr Gamble said. Kyneton Football Netball Club was also among those to honour the officers with a tribute on the club's Showgrounds Oval electronic scoreboard. The tribute also allowed a number of locals to honour the fallen officers too.

and out of the property as quickly as possible to avoid being caught or confronted," he said. Insp Payne said it was important for people to take simple steps to reduce the risk of vehicle-related theft: Always store car keys out of view and away from external doors and windows. Make sure you have your keys with you at all times, even when you are out and you've left your car at home. When you are out do not leave car keys unattended in bags, lockers etc. Don't tag your car keys with your name or address. Use a mobile phone number instead. Never leave a spare set of house keys or car keys in your car. Install good quality locks on doors and windows. Lock all windows and doors, even when you're at home - unlocked side and rear doors are the most common entry points for burglars. Remove valuable items from plain sight - particularly car keys, wallets, electronic devices and cash.
Three youths have been arrested and charged following an aggravated burglary in Trentham last Monday. It is alleged a set of car keys found inside the home were taken before offenders fled the scene in a stolen car, followed by another vehicle believed connected to the incident. Both vehicles were observed by Ballarat police a short time later, before one of the vehicles attempted to ram the police car. A 15-year-old female from Ballarat, 19-year-old man from Ballarat and 18-year-old man from Bullarto were arrested and charged with a range of offences. All three have been remanded in custody and will reappear in the Ballarat Magistrates Court at a later date. Detective Inspector Greg Payne said car thieves would often seize an opportunity to sneak in and steal car keys when they were left on display near an open window or unlocked door, which is what occurred in Trentham. "These types of offenders want to get in

protected as one precinct," she said. "We are also fast tracking new environmental protections and greater recognition of Hanging Rock's Aboriginal cultural significance. This will create more tourism and recreation opportunities for locals and visitors." DELWP is coordinating implementation of the strategic plan including new joint governance arrangements for the precinct with traditional owners, cultural and environmental values assessments of the site and developing a master plan. The master plan aims to reflect the iconic nature of the site, creating a high-quality visitor experience while managing impacts to the natural environment and cultural assets. Discussions around the future of Hanging Rock's East Paddock follow years of community angst to save the land from inappropriate development. There will be opportunities for the community to provide input into the development of the master plan.

Macedon Ranges Council discussed the future of Hanging Rock's East Paddock behind closed doors on Friday. The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning made an offer to purchase the council-owned site which is adjacent to the iconic landmark. The offer was listed on the agenda for the council's special meeting last week but councillors could not discuss the item publicly as it related to confidential property matters. The state government signalled its intent to purchase the East Paddock from the council last year. Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas said Hanging Rock was one of Victoria's most iconic natural assets, and the state government was working hard to ensure it was protected for all future generations. "We have invested $3 million to deliver the Hanging Rock Strategic Plan. This will allow the site to be purchased, and mean that the East Paddock site and Hanging Rock can be managed and

THANK YOU VICTORIA Thank you Victoria. For the way we’ve faced these past few weeks. With courage. With humility. And with hope. We may have been knocked down, but we’ve stood up. We’ve kept our distance, we’ve looked out for each other and we’ve kept our cool. With a newfound respect for handshakes, and an even deeper appreciation for hugs, we are spending time apart. But we’ve never been more united. And it’s the Victorians at the forefront of fighting this virus that we are most proud of. Our health care workers, our supermarket staff, our bus drivers, our cleaners and so many more. Every worker who – no matter what – puts themselves out there to help all of us through all of this. The best way we can help them, is by doing the opposite. By staying home. And staying positive. Respecting their efforts means respecting the restrictions. And, we can all see that slowly, it’s working. Yes, there is still a way to go. But we can’t stop now. Because staying apart keeps protecting our health system. Staying apart keeps saving lives. Staying apart keeps us together.

Residents of Ashbourne and Woodend are struggling to work and study from home during lockdown with constant interruption to their old technology ADSL internet service. Congestion on the Mount Macedon mobile tower that services the district has impacted mobile data use, especially in the outlying area to the east and south-east of Woodend. Some residents have also been unable to access the VicEmergency app in one of the highest bushfire risk locations in the Macedon Ranges. One local to the area, a second-year university student, told the Express he could only do his online studies very late at night when he could successfully hot spot using 4G technology. Telstra's acting regional manager Marcus Swinburne said Telstra was aware of the issue and had replaced some hardware at its Mount Macedon mobile site last month to reduce the number of drop-outs. "We're also looking at some longer term network solutions that would ease some localised congestion that customers might be experiencing when using mobile data," Mr Swinburne said.
NBN Co is launching a new fixed wireless tower at Yalonga Road Woodend in mid to late May, however the area is heavily treed and residents believe they may need a line of sight from their homes to the tower to be able to switch to that service. An NBN Co spokesperson said the site had been selected as the best possible location in order to provided NBN fixed wireless services to about 280 residents. "While residents may not be able to see the tower from their premises, it doesn't mean they will not be able to connect," the spokesperson said. "Once an order has been placed, an NBN installer will attend the premises and test for a fixed wireless signal. "Once the signal is acquired, the installer may put the outdoor antenna on the roof of the main premises, under the eaves or on a wall." The spokesperson said that in a small number of cases, if they were unable to find a suitable signal at the main premises, they would check whether one could be reached at another appropriate location on the property. "It is also possible to set up a groundmounted pole to achieve a suitable signal," she said.

Council bid for old school site

Macedon Ranges Council will make a bid to take over part of the vacated former Kyneton Primary School site. The proposal comes as the state government moves to find an organisation or group to manage and use part or all of the 1.2 hectares of land on Baynton Street by calling for expressions of interest in the site. The council would turn four lots on the site into open public space but would avoid taking on the dilapidated historical buildings that would require $3.68 million in safety repairs alone. The decision split council in a 5-4 vote as councillors weighed up the undesirable site fragmentation and opportunity to create gardens, a playground and other recreational spaces. Mayor Janet Pearce said there was a risk no single applicant would be successful in securing management of the entire site and opportunities would be lost. "I understand how very important this site is to the community," she said. "The issue is if the council does not put in an EOI and no group is successful for the whole site, and someone else puts an EOI for this open space area, then, I feel, council would have lost the opportunity for the greater community to retain that large area of four allotments that are interconnected to current facilities and areas that council has authority of." The council says it will withdraw its bid should an alternate submission be received for the whole site that is supported by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning - which is managing the process. However, some felt the council's very act of applying may tempt fragmentation of the site. Cr Roger Jukes said site development had the potential to revitalise and reconnect the town centre but it needed a whole-site
approach and funding that the council couldn't commit. He named it "one of the biggest opportunities since the founding of Kyneton" but urged councillors to leave it to the community and state's EOI process. "This is a very critical site in the centre of Kyneton. The vision that's needed is quite substantial and needs significant investment in the planning," he said. "I think we're selling it way too short. A mediocre effort will result in a mediocre outcome. The vision for this land is sadly lacking… This is a real future-building, town-building project, and that's why I can't support the officer's recommendation." Cr Jennifer Anderson agreed the site was "meant to be dealt with as a whole". "The community was quite clear in our consultation that they really did not want council to be the manager of the land. That was the feedback that came back to me: they want to be the managers," she said. "We should let it play out in the community and see what happens there." Many community groups have voiced interest in the site. Ahead of Friday's meeting, The Kyneton and District Town Square Co-op echoed concerns about fragmentation of the site. "At the very least, councillors should make certain that council involvement does not encourage fragmentation," said Rob Bakes, co-op board member. "Fragmentation would be the death knell for the community's cherished town square vision." The final vote confirmed the council would make a submission to the EOI process to manage the four allotments as outlined. A division recorded councillors in favour of the motion were: Pearce, Bleeck, Mees, Gayfer and Twaits. Those against were: Anderson, Jukes, West and Radnedge.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the rules for families and friends with loved ones in residential aged care. At Castlemaine Health, visitor restrictions were quickly introduced to protect residents and the frontline staff who care for them. Castlemaine Health CEO Ian Fisher said those decisions were made, and were still being made, in response to the threat that COVID-19 presented to our community and those most vulnerable. "The restrictions have successfully maintained our residents' health and wellbeing. There have been no cases of COVID-19, nor any cases of respiratory illness," Mr Fisher said. "This outcome is a credit to the patience and support of residents and families, and the professionalism of staff."But with no new positive COVID-19 in the Mount Alexander Shire at the time of writing, Castlemaine Health planned to gradually open up residential aged care to visitors from this week. "Throughout the pandemic we've been balancing our obligation to protect residents with the need to ensure the measures are reasonable and proportionate," Mr Fisher said. "We're had a lot of support from residents, families and the community, and we're incredibly grateful for that. "I hope welcoming visitors in again will make it a little easier for everyone to get the love and support that is so important right now."Visiting will be opened up gradually to ensure the protections achieved to date are

Family violence ... you’re not alone Mount Alexander Shire Council is urging anyone at risk of family violence to seek the help you need from the dedicated support services available. While we are all being asked to stay at home to prevent the spread of COVID-19, home may not be the safest place for everyone. "It is important to know that anyone exposed to family violence can seek help, and it is okay to leave home to escape harm," said Gaynor Atkin, council's pandemic coordinator. "Family violence, sexual assault and homelessness services continue to operate across the region, in addition to state and national services that operate around the clock 24/7 to help keep you safe." Unfortunately, there is always an increased risk of family violence associated with an emergency, and there are concerns the stay at home directions with COVID-19 bring additional risks. Some people may be at risk of being socially isolated with an abuser in quarantine, and access to family, friends and support networks may be limited. "If you feel you and your family are not safe at home, there are people you can talk to and services available to support you," Ms Atkin said. "The stay at home restrictions do allow you to leave your home for emergency purposes, to escape harm or the risk of harm, and for care and compassionate reasons." Family violence is never okay, no matter what the circumstances. Family violence can take many forms: physical, sexual, emotional, social, economic, psychological, and spiritual. Anyone can experience family violence: women, children and men. The majority of family violence incidents are experienced by women as gender-based violence. The Centre for Non-Violence based in Bendigo, covering the Loddon area, offers a range of services including safety planning, counselling, risk assessment, advocacy, and access to emergency accommodation. They offer phone support and online information including frequently asked questions. Safe Steps provides an 1800 response line that is open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Social isolation is no excuse for violence. The Men's Referral Service also provides help and support for men concerned about their own behaviour.
There is always an increased risk of family violence associated with an emergency, and there are concerns the stay at home directions with COVID-19 bring additional risks. Victoria Police are also committed to keeping community members safe as part of a dedicated police operation tackling family violence during the coronavirus pandemic. As part of Operation Ribbon, members of the Family Violence Investigation Unit are checking on the wellbeing of at-risk families across the state. They are also identifying and following up with known perpetrators to make sure they comply with conditions placed on them by the courts or family violence management plans. Macedon Ranges Shire Council made history on Friday.
Meeting makes history
KN250283
Macedon Ranges has made history as the first Victorian council to conduct an all virtual public meeting under the state's new legislation. Last week the Victorian Parliament passed a Bill allowing councillors to attend public meetings by electronic means of communication during the coronavirus pandemic. Since the start of the pandemic, the council has been advocating strongly for the sector to have the ability to conduct meetings remotely rather than meet in person. The first meeting under the new provisions was livestreamed on the council's website on Friday.
Drug bust at Greenhill
A large crop of cannabis plants were discovered being grown in a professional set up on a five-acre farm property at Greenhill last month. The suspicious activity on the KynetonMetcalfe Road property came to the attention of police at Kyneton and detectives from the Macedon Ranges Crime Investigation Unit were called in to investigate. A search warrant was executed on April 23 and a man of Asian appearance aged

Sarah Fiddelaers lives in the Macedon Ranges and squeezes her writing time amid the needs of her large family. Romsey author Sarah Fiddelaers has penned a new romance in a collection of four unforgettable stories of love, hope, humour and faith. Set in the first half of the 20th century, Easter Promises features strong women overcoming obstacles of their time to pursue their dreams and, of course, find love. The collaboration showcases Fiddelaers' story entitled Easter Dawn as well as stories by three other authors, including fellow Richel longlistee, Ava January. Easter Dawn is the story of Minnie, a wealthy young girl in 1912 on the verge of her society debut. When the man she loves discovers a dark secret that causes him to turn his back on society, Minnie must decide. Stay in her safe, glamorous world, or prove to Eric that she is capable of weathering any storm by his side? "My favourite aspect of writing this story was immersing myself in 1912 and exploring the last days of the idealism and confidence that preceded the Great War," Fiddelaers said. "None of the characters are aware that the world is about to be shaken up in a way that will reverberate into the next century, and that was fun to play with." The stories told in this anthology are diverse in time and setting. From Fiddelaers' idyllic pre-war autumn love story, to the battlefield of the Somme; a 1920s jewel heist in the French alps, to the skies above Texas with one of America's first women pilots during the Second World War. The anthology is Fiddelaers' latest project after completing her first novel, which was shortlisted for last year's Richel Prize for Emerging Writers. Copies of Easter Promises are available at Red Door Books of Lancefield or online at www.sarahfiddelaers.com

Pen pals multiply magazine hot off the press for his pen pal interested in cars! So much thought has gone into all these letters and I hear that students are finding writing to a real person very engaging as part of their home schooling," she said. "We haven't yet matched all Castlemaine Health aged-care residents with a pen pal so more participants are more than welcome. "The Rotary Club is ensuring that everyone receives at least one piece of correspondence. Thompson House, Spencely Hostel and Ellery House residents have all received a card over the past two weeks. Penhall residents will receive theirs this week." If you know someone in aged care, the Rotary Club encourages you to write to them. However, if you would like to be allocated a resident to correspond with over the next few months, contact Kerry on 0418 553 719 or make contact via the Rotary Club of Castlemaine Facebook page and they can assign you one.

The Pen Pal Project launched by the Rotary Club of Castlemaine last month has taken off! Another 25 letter writers joined the initiative aimed at sending cards and letters to residents at Castlemaine Health's aged-care facilities since the article appeared in our sister paper the Castlemaine Mail a fortnight ago. Pen Pal Project coordinator Kerry Anderson said they had been absolutely delighted by the response from the local community and beyond. "We have had letter writers of all ages join the initiative. Some people from as far away as Darwin are writing to residents at our local aged-care facilities to brighten their day during this period of lockdown," she said. "I'm loving the selfies and the different themes! Darrell talked about his interest in WWI with a resident who loves history, Sheri included autumn leaves for a gardening enthusiast, and Larry provided a copy of Australian Street Rodding

If there are no traffic lights, signals, or lines on the road at an intersection, you must give way to any vehicle on your right that would cross your path. At intersections, you must give way to pedestrians crossing the road you are turning into, whether there are pedestrian lights or not. EMPLOYMENT LAW
Hi there cyclists, Pedalling Peta back again. We need to deal with a very important preparation matter - knowing the Road Laws, and being prepared to obey them. Sadly, almost every day, I see cyclists breaking the rules. I suspect you see them too. We could be charitable and think of it as ignorance. Or we could be annoyed at them for letting the rest of us down. As I said last time, we need the trust and respect of other road and footpath users to help keep us safe. Trust and respect are earned by playing by the rules. Flouting the Road Laws very quickly destroys all that. So what Road laws apply to cyclists? First, your bike equipment. We are required to have: - Working brakes. The law says at least one working brake. Commonsense says this should be on the rear wheel. For off-road use also having a front wheel brake assists in downhill control. - A bell, or horn, or some similar warning device. If you ride at night, or in bad weather, you must have: - a white light on the front visible from 200 metres, - a red light on the back visible from 200 metres, - a red reflector on the back visible from 50 metres. Second, your personal equipment must include a properly fitted and fastened helmet. Under exceptional circumstances, you

Something natural world ...
I Built No Schools in Kenya Kirsten Drysdale
My Penguin Year Lindsay McCrae
2019, travelogue-tragedy-farce, 352 pages A friend rings Kirsten Drysdale with a job offer. A cruisey gig as a dementia carer for a rich old man in Kenya. All expenses paid, free time to travel. There seems no reason to say no. It’s only on arrival in Nairobi Kirsten discovers his family is at war around him and she has to spy on his wife, placate his daughter, rebuff his marriage proposals, hide his car keys and clip his toenails, all while dodging his physical aggression and remaining sane in the colonial time warp of his home. I Built No Schools in Kenya is a rollicking travelogue-tragicomedy about race, wealth, love, death, family, benzodiazepines, monkeys and whisky. It’s “almost entirely true”.
2019, non-fiction, 304 pages For 337 days, award-winning wildlife cameraman Lindsay McCrae intimately follows a colony of emperor penguins in Antarctica. He documents their journey and the extraordinary human experience of living among them in the planet’s harshest environment. Lindsay observes every aspect of a breeding emperor’s life and how they adapt to changing conditions. He also documents his own challenges that come with being 15,000km away from the comforts of home to live his childhood dream. This book includes a section of McCrae’s colour photography from the journey.

A first for Kyneton in 160 years While some major cattle selling centres around the state have cancelled their stock sales due to the current pandemic, Kyneton's monthly store cattle sale went ahead last Wednesday with strict COVID-19 guidelines in place for the first time. Cattle was yarded in alternate pens to ease out the spread of prospective buyers. Only prebooked or professional agents were allowed through the yards. All were asked to keep their distance from each other and leave the yards and stand away once the sale began. Extra people were placed on the elevated walkway to take note of the bids. A smaller yarding of 420 cattle was on offer, which allowed the stock to be spread out though the pens. It was noted that this sale coincided with the 150 years celebrations of the saleyards 10 years ago to the very day and date, giving a 160-year link with the district. Thirty-five buyers purchased on Wednesday snapping up a good quality and well-bred yarding of cattle that made exceptional money. Cows and calves made to $2250, heifers to $1400, steers to $1840, while cows made to $1100. Kyneton Associated Agents quoted the sale as very solid with steer weaners $100 dearer on the previous sale and bigger steers dearer by $150. Heifers were firm and cows and calves dearer by $200 on the March store sale. Steers Granite View Park 19 angus $1700-$1840 Cesnik Holdings 9 angus $1580 Cart 14 Red angus $1140.00 Omnizar ) 40 angus $970-$1360 McCabe Noms 4 angus $1490 Lambourne 11 angus $1490 DG Murray 18 angus $1380 Cardillo 10 hereford $1330 L. Saleyards can be a messy place, but the hand sanitisers dotted around the yards at Wednesday’s Kyneton store cattle sale held another message.
Buyers at Kyneton’s store cattle sale kept their distance from each other, some taking to placing their bids from outside the yards themselves.

Time to fill up? Victorians are reaping the benefits of cheaper fuel prices as a result of falling wholesale oil prices in the wake of COVID-19, according to RACV. World crude oil prices have tumbled following a downturn in manufacturing and global air travel as a result of the virus. RACV senior vehicle engineer Nicholas Platt said the drop in demand, and subsequent oversupply, had seen the wholesale price of petrol in Australia fall to its lowest level since February last year. “This fall has led to an unlikely benefit for many motorists with the average price of unleaded petrol the lowest for a long, long time,” Mr Platt said. “While the current prices are low, RACV believes that there is still sufficient margin for retailers to maintain these prices and no reason for prices to suddenly skyrocket. “The best way for Victorian motorists to make sure they’re getting the cheapest petrol prices is to use a comparison app or website, such as the RACV fuel finder, and remember if prices are high, just top-up and wait for them to fall before filling up,” he said. However, if you drive a diesel vehicle, prices are not
so good. The RACV reckons diesel vehicle drivers are still being taken for a ride. “There’s no reason for this, service stations seem to be taking advantage of diesel vehicle drivers. The price of diesel fuel doesn’t go up or down in a price cycle like unleaded petrol, so the owners of dieselpowered vehicles are being unfairly penalised,” Mr Platt said. Mr Platt said the unfolding COVID-19 crisis would most likely cause world oil prices to fall even lower. “We are seeing the cheapest wholesale price for years, with analysts predicting further falls,” Mr Platt added. “But that’s cold comfort for diesel users, especially farmers and people living in regional Victoria. Since the start of the year, the profit margin for diesel has blown out from just over 10 cents a litre to more than 30 cents. “Not only do many regional Victorians own diesel vehicles, they are also dependent on diesel to run generators, tractors, harvesters and all types of machinery,” he said.
Danger is close to home An additional 1600 kilometres of rumble strip line-marking will also be rolled out across the state to alert drivers if they veer out of their lane and 117 rural intersections will be made safer with improvements including rumble strips and signage, and more Side Road Activated Speed technology will be installed at the highest-risk sites.
The majority of the 146 deaths on regional Victorian roads last year were people driving in their local area, according to the latest road trauma data. Analysis of the 2019 lives lost statistics has revealed that it continues to be regional Victorians who die on the state’s rural roads, with nearly three quarters of the people killed last year dying close to their home address. Across regional Victoria, about 73 per cent of deaths were people driving in their local region with run-off-road and head-on crashes resulting in 94 fatalities while 101 people were killed in high-speed zones. The total number of crashes resulting in deaths and serious injuries on roads with safety barriers has almost halved since works began. During 2019, barriers across the state were hit 3307 times - representing thousands of potential serious or fatal crashes avoided.

It is difficult to imagine the emotions felt 75 years ago on May 8, 1945, when Victory in Europe was declared, and the war against Germany came to an end. In Australia celebrations were undertaken excitedly but with the knowledge that, closer to home, the war in the Pacific against Japan was still to be won. The depth of relief was reflected by the estimated 100,000 people that attended a service at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne the following day. Australian men and women served in the European and Mediterranean theatres from the beginning of hostilities in September 1939 and Victory in Europe was a cause for great celebration in Allied nations and

Apply the same principle Tony Bell, Castlemaine You cannot help but laugh at Mount Alexander Shire Council's multi-message board in Duke Street where they bash on about 'Buy Local'. The very same council that hands out contracts and tenders to people from outside our shire, when locals are cheaper. To top it off, we have a quarry within our own shire (Barfold) that this council doesn't even buy product from. They buy product from outside our shire when Barfold Quarries is cheaper (I know as I buy from Barfold). I'm sure ratepayers are more than happy to and already do 'Buy Local'. So council, why aren't you applying the same principle to 'Buy Local', when you don't 'Buy Local' with our money? Bloody pathetic. Writers are asked to keep letters to a maximum of 300 words. Fatal crash
A man has died after the car he was driving crashed into a tree in Korweinguboora, just south of Daylesford on Sunday morning. A passer-by called emergency services about 5.40am after discovering the Ford sedan on its roof. Investigators believe the man was driving north along the Ballan-Daylesford Road when he veered from the road, crashed into a tree and overturned. The driver, a 57-year-old Musk Vale man, died at the scene. Anyone who witnessed the incident or who may have dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au
Police boost
Castlemaine Police Station will welcome six new officers over the next six months. The boost in police numbers is part of the state government's Community Safety Statement and its 2017 commitment to put 3135 new recruits on the streets. The record $3 billion investment has seen more than 1900 of 3135 new police deployed to communities across the state, and from this month another 580 police officers will be progressively deployed to stations across Victoria. An additional 208 officers will go to specialist roles such as family violence, road policing, and state emergency support. Regional areas will receive a massive boost to resourcing, with 356 of the new police going to country regions.

Overall, responses to the COVID-19 crisis in Metcalfe have been splendid. People are tolerating hardship and keeping their families safe. At the community level, we are offering to help our older housebound citizens with their shopping and have advertised this through a mass email-out and flyers on our community notice board. So it saddened us to see a group of 10 people, adults and children, from five cars, playing tennis together at the courts in the Mount Alexander Shire Reserve at Metcalfe on Sunday April 19. It's hard to believe this happened out of ignorance. But, just in case: the Council Laws, posted on the gate of the Reserve, prohibit, at this time, more than two people being together (and then only at social distance) unless they are from the same household. Other laws must have been broken to get five cars to the site. It's not so much that laws are broken, but consider the potential consequences. It needs only one symptomless person with the virus to start spreading it through our community, thus particularly putting our older residents at risk. So far we are safe. Let's keep it that way please.

meant that thousands of Australians, including recently released prisoners of war, could return home. Tragically, more than 10,000 Australians were killed, nearly 10,000 more were wounded, and almost 8,000 became prisoners of war in the war against Germany and her European allies. This year, on May 8, we pause to remember the significance of the Allied victory in Europe and the men and women whose service and sacrifice helped bring about Germany's defeat. Later this year on August 15, we will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, when Victory in the Pacific was declared. As a nation we will stand together to remember the service of the more than one million men and women and the sacrifice of the some 39,000 men and women who died protecting our country during the Second World War in all theatres and campaigns.

The design of Cobaw Community Health’s new Kyneton facility creates a welcoming and flexible space.
Health facility completed A year since works first began on the Caroline Chisholm Drive site, Cobaw Community Health's new Kyneton home has now been completed. The purpose-built new facility, made possible by a $9.7M grant from the Victorian Government's Regional Health Infrastructure Fund, will replace Cobaw's main office at 47 High Street. "This vital part of local infrastructure gives us the capacity to provide a greater range of allied health and community services with significant increases in clinical spaces to meet increased service demand," said Cobaw CEO Margaret McDonald. The interesting mix of exterior cladding and intricate brickwork was designed to reference the local history, architecture, flora and the landscape of the
Macedon Ranges. "The grey cladding references the bluestone rock and brickwork found extensively in the area as well as the many farm sheds seen in towns across the region," Ms McDonald said. "The curves of the brick arches are a nod to the shop fronts of the old buildings as well as to hills of the local environment and the gold glass references Kyneton's history as a service town for the goldfields. The internal colours reflect the colours of the natural landscape of the hills, rivers, trees and earth." The building is clearly visible as you come off the freeway and the entrance to Cobaw faces the Kyneton Health site, accessed via additional park-
Adopted park plan divides A plan to transform Ash Wednesday Memorial Park has divided the Mount Macedon community and Macedon Ranges Council. Councillors have adopted a draft master plan to develop the park over the decade with modern play equipment and a permanent stage for activities among other upgrades, but it has drawn mixed community response. The park is a memorial to the 1983 fires that ravaged the town but some feel it may become overdeveloped and lost as a quiet place of contemplation. Varied community feedback on the plan saw some councillors reluctant to commit to the site's overhaul, in a 5-4 vote last Friday. Councillor Helen Radnedge said the community consultation raised doubt about the site development and kind of play equipment incorporated, with residents stating "it's not Luna Park". Concerns were also aired about the position of the stage near a gas line, powerlines and close by local waterways, while others were eager to see the changes. Cr Jennifer Anderson said split answers in community submissions made the plan difficult to support in its current form. "It takes it back to the purpose of the park and the park is a memorial to the losses of Ash Wednesday, so I think we need to keep that foremost in our minds. The park and master plan should really be reflecting that," she said. "Yes, it could be used for other reasons but the main purpose should be for quiet contemplation and reflection." But Cr Mandi Mees championed the
draft plan, highlighting the needs of a changing demographic and current use of the space. She said Ash Wednesday would never be forgotten. "We know there is a new generation moving to the area who bring along with them their young children. The purpose of the park as it was over 30 years ago is slightly changing," she said. The park is in close proximity to the railway station, township, Mountview Theatre and Jubilee Hall, and includes a small playground, barbecue and picnic settings. "For many years families have said the playground only suits very young children and they were asking us for various improvements," Cr Mees said. "The community is very passionate about holding small family orientated style events at the park and would like to facilitate this with a stage. This is an active space that the community wants to use and we just want to improve the amenity." The Macedon and Mount Macedon Business and Tourism Association made a successful submission to the council's 2018/2019 budget process for the development of a master plan to guide the park's future. Council's 2019/20 budget included $50,000 for stage one works which includes improvements to the entertainment area and construction of a stage. Now adopted, the detailed design is expected to begin this year. A division recorded councillors in favour of the plans in their present form were: Pearce, Bleeck, Mees, Jukes and Twaits. Councillors against were: Anderson, Radnedge, West and Gayfer.
ing that has been added to the existing car park. All of Cobaw's services will be available in the new building including counselling, family and parenting support, homelessness support, LGBTIQA+ groups, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech pathology. In addition, there will be a number of co-located and visiting services including the Centre for NonViolence and Centrelink that will grow over the coming months with the increased space. Despite the doors currently being closed to all of its sites including at Romsey and Woodend, Cobaw continues to deliver all of its programs and services via telehealth and in person where necessary.
Police at Trentham have thanked their community for their endeavours during the COVID-19 restrictions. Senior Constable Sam Cubley said they had been aiming to keep their little town safe and greatly appreciated that it hadn't been easy for their citizens. "We would also like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts, cards and flowers after the tragic loss of our four colleagues on the Eastern Freeway. May they rest in peace," SC Cubley said.
Drugs in car
Two men in their 30s were charged with drug possession after their vehicle was intercepted by police at 3am on April 26 in Woodend. The vehicle was searched and a quantity of drugs were located. The men were a 37-year-old from Ardeer and 38-yearold from Delahey.
Gisborne trees to go
Five mature cypress trees at Gardiner Reserve in Gisborne will be removed due to safety concerns. An independent arborist inspected 21 trees surrounding the sports oval at the reserve in 2018 as part of Macedon Ranges Council's annual tree audit program. The arborist reported that 13 of the trees were in poor condition and posed serious safety concerns, and eight have since been removed. The remaining five mature Hesperocyparis Macrocarpa monterey cypress trees will be removed over the next few months. As the sports ground is currently closed due to restrictions associated with the current COVID-19 pandemic, the works are not expected to cause inconvenience to reserve tenants or the community.
Cyber bullying of council needs to stop
Macedon Ranges Council is calling for a crackdown on bullying, intimidation and threatening behaviour online as workbased instances against staff and elected members increase. Councillor Jennifer Anderson called out the escalating behaviour at last Friday's special meeting and sought greater cyber protection for local government employees and representatives. "Increasingly we are seeing people go to social media, particularly Facebook, and provide comments about councillors and staff that they have no knowledge of, or understanding of, what's going on in the background towards the decisions being made," Cr Anderson said. "They're not interested in talking to us or to staff about what is happening and they are not appreciating the effect this can have on the individual but also the morale
of the staff altogether. "There does not seem to be anything out there to protect staff and councillors from this and it's really important that we get this strengthened. This form of bullying should not be tolerated by anyone." Cr Anderson said unfounded comments online could lead to numerous other problems including uncertainty in the community as adequate information wasn't being portrayed in that space. "Social media is not the place for us to respond to these comments and it's very difficult to keep a running going on what is happening in the background," she said. The council will write to the Australian Local Government Association to call upon both state and federal governments to work with local and territory governments to address the escalating issue. The motion had unanimous support from councillors.

ESTATE
BUYING AND SELLING IN TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY There is so much change taking place in our world right now as we navigate our way through a new way of living as the COVID-19 global pandemic unfolds. Our home is our castle and we are truly at bay, remaining cautious with concerns about job security, household income and our new stay-athome lifestyle. The property market is also changing and we are receiving a lot of questions from both sellers and potential buyers seeking advice on the current landscape. With job losses on the immediate horizon and financial security at the top of minds around the country, it is difficult to look to the future and to make major decisions based on purchasing or selling. Like a breath of fresh air, it is with welcome relief that many organisations are already starting to look forward to spring in the form of a light at the end of the tunnel, and this is the same in the property industry. The cost of borrowing is lower than it has ever been; interest rates are at an all-time low and banks are
continuing to lend. With stimulus packages coming into play over the coming weeks and month, it is likely that the property market will remain stable on the back of additional funds being put back into the economy. So should you be selling or buying in the current market? First you need to understand what your rationale is for purchasing or selling. Is your decision a financial or emotional reaction? For investors, sellers and buyers, this is a time to seek out opportunities and to research your local area. As a real estate agent, I can provide you with market insights and trends which are changing daily. Dependent on your needs, your local agent is a vital source of knowledge during uncertain financial times. While coronavirus is making the community nervous, the supply and demand of property will always be there. While we may see a short period of disruption – like with all industries – the property market, which has an excellent foundation following a price growth in 2019, will still maintain its strong hold through this stormy ride.

As fire restrictions lifted in the final parts of Victoria just recently, the CFA urged residents across the state to exercise extreme caution when burning off. Last week, there were more than 1200 private landowner burn offs registered, some of which had been registered with an open date, which meant that the landowner would conduct the burn over more than one day or when conditions were suitable. CFA's chief officer Steve Warrington reminded Victorians that it was important to check local conditions on the day of any burn off they were considering undertaking. "Conditions can change quickly and fires can get out of control within minutes in dry and windy conditions," he said. "The effects of an out-of-control fire can be devastating and we want everyone to exercise extreme caution." CFA also reminds people to always register their burn offs so Triple Zero (000) operators know what is happening in the area. Landowners can register their burn off with the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority by calling 1800 668 511 or emailing burnoffs@esta.vic.gov.au "CFA's firefighters have had an ex-
tremely busy season and are now dealing with the threat of the coronavirus. We ask that landowners register burn offs to help reduce the risk of CFA brigades being called out unnecessarily if a member of the public calls about smoke or a fire in the area," Mr Warrington said. He added that people should never leave a burn off unattended as it was the resident's responsibility to ensure that it did not get out of control. "If a burn off does get out of control, call '000' immediately. People should have a fire plan and prepare for the event of fire, and never be complacent." Keep your burn off safe and legal * Check fire restrictions in your area and always register your burn on 1800 668 511 * Check and monitor weather conditions - particularly wind * Warn your neighbours beforehand that there will be smoke in the air * Leave a three-metre fire break, free from flammable materials around the burn * Have sufficient equipment and water to stop the fire spreading * Never leave a burn off unattended stay for its entire duration * If your burn off gets out of control, call '000' immediately

Lawyers get creative The legal profession is not usually associated with creativity, but the COVID-19 pandemic is forcing lawyers to get creative and find new ways of witnessing documents and taking instructions. With the current restrictions on movement and gathering, many physical offices are closed, ironically at a time when people are turning their minds to their legal affairs. Caroline Grainger of Grainger Legal Castlemaine said she had seen an increase in people wanting to revise documents like wills and powers of attorney. "At a time like this it's important that the legal profession is responsive to the community's needs," she said. Grainger Legal has implemented various changes to accommodate physical restrictions, such as taking instructions via video, and signings at flexible locations. "The changes have been forced on everyone very quickly so we're fortunate to be able to find a way to help clients through this and we're finding that people are adapting really well," Ms Grainger said. A valid will requires the person making it to sign the document in the presence of two witnesses. For a power of attorney, two witnesses are also required but one must be a lawyer, medical practitioner or other qualified witness. But with people in Australia largely confined to their homes, it is becoming increasingly difficult to arrange for docu-
ments to be witnessed in person. It is possible that temporary changes to signing requirements will be made during the pandemic, but they have not yet been legislated. State Attorney-General Jill Hennessy has confirmed that legal services are regarded as necessary, and that her office is working with the legal sector to see what alternative arrangements could be made for documents that require signing in person. Until then practitioners have been thinking outside the box. "Recently I've witnessed documents on the footpath outside our office, on the front doorstep of a client's house and through the window of a client's car," Ms Grainger said. "The solutions aren't complicated; they just require a bit of lateral thinking and some flexibility." Ms Grainger said that people should not be deterred from getting their legal affairs in order because of the changes to how the services were delivered. "If people have a legal question it's important to get it addressed it as soon as possible," she said. "Otherwise it can become a more serious problem in the future." Grainger Legal is currently offering initial appointments for wills and power of attorney documents or accident compensation claims via video conference. Call 5407 0161 or email info@graingerlegal. com.au to arrange an appointment.

Maddy Prespakis is given her medal by her sister Georgia.

Inspirational and dynamic Bill West
AFL Women's best and fairest winner Maddy Prespakis is a shining example to a cavalcade of juniors players -both girls and boys -- on how you can reach the pinnacle in your chosen sport. A high level of natural ability is a good start, but dedication, application and opportunity all play a part. It's not hard to think back across generations in the Macedon Ranges and surrounds on who many thought might make it to or near the top. Two who did from this area instantly come to mind: Romsey cricketer Peter McIntyre went on to play Test cricket as a leg-spinner for Australia; Chloe Stewart began rolling bowls around the Kyneton green at the age of nine, and reached the number one ranking in Australia in her early twenties, representing her country on numerous occasions, and claiming various titles -- including the Australian and United States singles. Maddy Prespakis made a rapid rise through the ranks, being introduced to football at Romsey Auskick at the age of four. She became "hooked" on footy, and two years later was in the Redbacks' under-eight side. Strong and determined, she was more than a match for most of the boys and only age rules on girls playing junior footy prevented her continuing with Romsey after she turned 14. Prespakis attended Gisborne Secondary College and made a big impact with the Sunbury U15s girls' football side. Then on to Calder Cannons, where she was captain and best and fairest. In 2017, she won the best and fairest with AFLW team of the year St Kilda Sharks.
The talent scouts had their eyes on Prespakis as the AFLW grew in statue, and Carlton was the beneficiary; she did not want to go to a club further afield despite several being interested. In 2019, Prespakis showed her versatility and class with the Blues, taking advantage of coaching input and the opportunity to play against top level players from Melbourne and interstate. She won the Blues' best and fairest, and other awards, and not surprisingly made the All-Australian team. There was more pressure on the dynamic midfielder/onballer this season, as other coaches tried to work out how to minimise her ball-getting ability and precise delivery by hand and foot. Prespakis adapted and reaped the rewards, culminating in her five best afields in seven matches. Kieren Bowers (Freemantle) was runner-up on 12, North Melbourne star Emma Kearney finished on 11, and Anne Hatchard (Adelaide) and the versatile Jenna Bruton (North Melbourne) were equal fourth on 10. "It's definitely been a year that I won't forget. It's been a great two years and I can't wait to see what's ahead," Prespakis said after regaining her composure when it was clear she had the medal sewn up. Her 17-year-old sister Georgia, also making her way in the AFLW, handed over the medal in a memorable occasion. When Prespakis visited Romsey juniors' training almost 12 months, it was a warm "welcome home" in lots of ways. "There's a clear pathway to the top for girls as well as boys," she told the young Redbacks. AFL head of women's football, Nicole Livingstone (for-
mer Olympic swimming champion) congratulated Prespakis on her medal success. "For Maddy to be a dual club best and fairest winner, a dual Toyota AFL Women's all-Australian and the 2109 AFL Rising Star winner at just 19 years of age is a remarkable achievement. "It is a real credit to the work Maddy puts in developing herself as a footballer and as a leader -- she will be a fantastic player for a long time to come," Livingstone said. The Riddell District League has warmly acknowledged Prespakis' remarkable achievement. BRUTON SHINES Playing with and against boys with the Trentham Saints juniors steeled Jenna Bruton for high honours, but she may not have realised lay ahead at that time. Bruton eventually went to work on her parents' potato farm at Trentham, and has been given the nickname 'Spud', a name synonymous with the late St Kilda champion Danny Frawley. In 2013 Bruton played in the first AFL women's exhibition match and represented Victoria as a junior. In an inspired move she was drafted by Footscray, and Bruton became a premiership player in her first season in the AFLW, something she will never forget. Last season she was recruited by North Melbourne, and her good form continued, winning the club's best and fairest and being in the All-Australian squad. With a contract at North Melbourne until the end of 2021, Bruton was again prominent in the 2200 season, and appeared unlucky to not gain All-Australian selection. Her form was vindicated by finishing five votes behind Prespakis.
Tax Evader steals the show Bill West
Kyneton-trained 11-year-old galloper Tax Evader took his stake earnings to well over the $300,000 mark with a swooping finish at Horsham races on Saturday, much to the delight of connections. Trainer Charles Cassar and a loyal band of owners had waited patiently for 46 starts since Tax Evader's last win -- on December 23, 2016 at Cranbourne -- to see him pass the post first again. Very few 11-year-olds are racing, let alone winning, across Victoria but Cassar travelled to Horsham confident of a good showing at the gelding's third run back from a five-month spell. "He's been so unlucky, with 16 minor placings (seconds and thirds) since his last win, and his run at Ararat on April 18 was good, and he likes a heavy track," he said. Ridden by Jack Martin, Tax Evader was
in the market at $8 and settled back in the field over the 1400m journey. Pulled to the middle of the track, he flew home over the last 100 metres to grab favourite Quiet Lucky in the last couple of strides. Tax Evader began his career racing in Queensland, but was a barrier rogue, and eventually came to Victoria to be prepared by master trainer Peter Moody for 12 months, winning in city company. One of Cassar's stable clients asked him to keep an eye out for a tried galloper with ability, and he saw Tax Evader advertised as a sound seven-year-old. "The purchaser was an accountant, and couldn't believe he ended up with a horse called Tax Evader," he quipped. Another of the current part-owners is in the same profession. Cassar is a full-time trainer with his stables at Pipers Creek and 12 horses presently in work. Tax Evader's 10th win from
103 starts gave Cassar his 90th career win. "He (Tax Evader) loves stable life and going to the races ‌.. he's my favourite and everyone loves him, and we hope he can follow-up with another win soon, with soft tracks likely." OVERDUE WIN Kyneton trainer George Osborne strongly supported the seven-event Horsham meeting, and Celeritate Regem scored an overdue win in a 0-58 Handicap over 1200m. The consistent galloper, with eight seconds in his 22 previous starts, broke his maiden status. Starting favourite, the five-year-old won by a length from outsider Missano and Helvetian, also both Kyneton-trained. Footnote: The Osborne-trained Mount Togetherness: Pipers Creek trainer Horeb, ridden by Winona Costin, finished Charles Cassar and his favourite galloper sixth in the rich Wagga Town Plate on Tax Evader. Thursday.
