What are the prospects of football and netball taking place across the Bendigo and Riddell leagues this season?

"We just don't know" is the current condensed summation from Gisborne Football Netball Club president John Wood.

While he was speaking to the Express following a BFL club presidents' meeting last week, and a follow-up get-together of the Gisborne club's hierarchy with coaches, it seemingly reflected a wider feeling across both leagues.

The adjacent Heathcote District Football League has just 'pulled the pin' and cancelled its 2020 season due to the COVID-19

virus impact and risk factors. Heathcote's decision may be contentious at this stage, but it provides certainty for clubs, players and supporters.

A relaxation on health protocols flowing down from the state government through AFL Victoria and eventually on to leagues and clubs means modified training was allowable as from May 25 (yesterday), but Wood and Macedon club president Andrew Dick emphasised this was training only, with no indication that matches would eventually be played this season.

"There's no guarantee on games," the Bulldogs' president said. Full story, page 39.

House fire suspicious

Evader caught

A 35-year-old man who attempted to evade Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol last week has had his car impounded for a month.

The Sunbury man will be summonsed at a later date for evading police, for driving while disqualified and displaying false plates.

Towns drive trial extends

A community transport project to help Lancefield and Romsey locals get where they need to go is entering a new phase.

The two towns' Neighbourhood Houses combined to develop the Community Driven project, which has been helping local residents get to medical appointments, and now the trial will be extended to offer shared transport for other needs.

The service will help people get to their destination when they don't have transport available to them, or would prefer not drive.

The Neighbourhood Houses have created an online survey to help accommodate the needs of the community. Links can be found via the Lancefield Neighbourhood House Facebook page.

Firefighters were called to the scene of a suspicious house fire in Gisborne on Sunday.

Police are investigating a suspicious house fire in Gisborne on Sunday.

Firefighters from Gisborne, Riddells Creek and Sunbury were called to the scene at a Wallaby Run address about 2.40pm, to find smoke issuing from the second storey of the building.

Wearing breathing apparatus, the volunteers made forced entry into the house to conduct a search for any occupants and to locate the fire.

Incident controller Tom Ruff said that after an initial search no one was found to be at home.

"Once our firefighters completed a search of the building with the aid of a thermal imaging camera, our focus shifted to extinguishing the fire, which was located on the second floor," Mr Ruff said.

"After the fire was extinguished, a positive pressure fan was used to ventilate, which enabled us to investigate further."

Firefighters managed to contain the fire to a single room within 20 minutes of arriving.

The fire has been deemed to be suspicious. Police are investigating.

Restrictions to be eased

From June 1, Victorians will be allowed to have up to 20 people in their homes and stay overnight at private residences and tourist accommodation, as coronavirus restrictions ease.

Weddings will be permitted to have up to 20 people in addition to the celebrant and couple, up to 50 people can attend funerals and up to 20 people at other religious ceremonies. Camping will also be allowed at state and national parks but shared facilities will remain closed. Outdoor playgrounds, skateparks and outdoor gym equipment will reopen for use as schools return.

Local group ‘Support Birthing at Castlemaine Health’ garnered more than 1000 signatures in 72 hours calling for birthing services to be reinstated at the hospital during the current review.

Castlemaine Health announced on May 16 that it had temporarily paused birthing services to review its policies, procedures and processes to ensure they aligned with the requirements of a low-risk Level 2 birthing service. In a statement the hospital said it would be working with its midwives and local GP obstetricians, Bendigo Health and Safer Care Victoria to complete the review, which is expected to take about six weeks.

The announcement drew an outcry from the local community concerned about the future of the service and calls for the Castlemaine service to be reinstated while the review takes place.

Facebook group ‘Support Birthing at Castlemaine Health’ was quickly formed to lead the push for services to resume.

Group spokesperson Arabella Davison said the Kyneton Health Service lost its maternity services in late 2019 and the local community did not want to see its hospital suffer the same fate.

“The decision to pause the service puts these low-risk women at risk by removing access to their closest service and forcing them to travel to Bendigo,” Ms Davison said.

“It doesn’t make sense to suspend what is an above-average service while undertaking this review,” she said.

Ms Davison stressed there had been no critical incident to trigger the review.

“Reviews like this take place all the time in hospitals and healthcare settings, in schools and workplaces. There is absolutely no need for the service to be suspended while this takes place,” Ms Davison said.

“There is a huge amount of support for this service. We have collected 1026 signatures in just 72 hours.

“The petition includes the support of 20 health professionals, 19 families planning to birth at Castlemaine and 150 women who have given birth there and have praised the service,” she said.

Daylesford couple Bronwyn and Jarred were set to birth at Castlemaine and are now faced with rethinking their plans.

Bronwyn said being pregnant during COVID-19 had been stressful enough without this latest hurdle.

“I’ve had to compromise by not having my mum with me as you are only allowed one support person and naturally that will be Jarred, and now I can’t birth at the hospital of my choice,” Bronwyn said.

“We urge the hospital, Health Minister and Safer Care Victoria to reinstate the services as soon as possible,” Ms Davison said.

Castlemaine Health CEO Ian Fisher thanked the community for their outpouring of support for the service and assured the community it would return.

“We understand the importance of retaining our local birthing service. There are no plans to close it,” Mr Fisher said.

Local GP obstetricians Dr Louisa Hope, Dr Veronica Moule, Dr Richard Mayes and Dr Frances Harkin provided detailed summaries of birthing statistics at Castlemaine Health over the last three years to Safer Care Victoria, the Minister for Health and the Castlemaine Health Board ahead of crucial meetings regarding the issue scheduled for yesterday.

“We find it unacceptable that pregnant women be transferred to care elsewhere at incredibly short notice so close to their time of birthing. The impact is devastating, and we are supporting women through that.

Review of our statistics demonstrate we provide a safe service and we see no good reason why these women should be excluded from birthing in their place of choice...the place that feels right for them,” - Drs Hope, Moule, Mayes and Harkin said.

The Victorian Government is directing all Victorians to stay at home to slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). While the stay at home directions still apply, some restrictions have eased and there is now a fifth reason to leave home.

You may only leave your home to: • Shop for food and other necessary goods and services.

• Access medical services or provide caregiving.

• Attend work or education where you can’t do those things from home.

• Exercise and participate in some recreational activities adhering to the rules.

• Visit friends, family and loved ones while adhering to the rules.

You may also leave your home in an emergency or if required by law.

You can now have: • Family and friends visit you at home – with up to five visitors being allowed at your home at one time.

• Gatherings of people for the purposes of noncontact sport and recreation in public settings, such as parks – with groups of up to ten being allowed to gather.

• Small gatherings of up to ten people at some indoor facilities such as places of worship and community centres – along with those required to run the facilities. The four-square metre rule applies.

It is important that we all continue to stay at home and follow the advice to keep our community safe and protect each other. Forest Creek Trail works Works will start this week to upgrade a stretch of the Forest Creek Trail and install an accessible crossing on Hargraves Street. The trail will be closed during the works, which are expected to take four weeks. The project is funded by the State Government’s Healthy Heart of Victoria initiative.

Powering on through pandemic Lisa Dennis

Castlemaine's Billmans Foundry was gearing up for the unveiling of its largest project to date - two beautiful bronze whales created by Wollongong artist Julie Squires and fellow artist Theresa Ardler in Sydney's Botany Bay - when the coronavirus pandemic took hold.

Regarded as Australia's leading manufacturer of bronze fountains, street park, garden furniture and ornamental castings, the local company has undertaken several high-profile projects with former Melbourne artist Squires over the last decade, including casting the VK Commodore that forms part of the Peter Brock 'King of the Mountain' memorial sculpture at Bathurst's Mount Panorama.

Billmans Foundry's Max Billman said the latest massive project, which included canoes (Nawi) and a fishing net, aimed to mark the 'Meeting of Two Cultures' and was commissioned to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the first contact between the crew of HMB Endeavour and the Gweagal people on the shores of Botany Bay. "To give you some idea of scale, the large whale is about 8m long and the largest canoe was about 5m long," he said.

"The whale patterns provided were made from polystyrene coated in fibreglass and the canoes arrived as freshly carved bark canoes.

"The pieces were moulded and cast at Billmans Foundry, then welded together by Webb Welding.

"The canoes and the net were probably the most difficult pieces our moulders have ever done, we have some talented employees!"

Despite the upheaval, the foundry's regular work has not only remained steady, its orders have increased in the weeks since the pandemic started.

"With a real push for people to buy Australian made we've been inundated with orders for our personalised camp ovens and one of our Melbourne clients Aussie Heatwave has had a rush on their chimineas," Mr Billman said.

"We have also had orders for our fountains, seats, verandah posts and lacework - with many doing garden work and home improvements during isolation and we have had a run on bell housing for our clients at the Castlemaine Rod Shop who have also been under the pump as car enthusiasts find themselves home with time on their hands to do their projects.

"We have been so busy we have even been able to bring in a couple of local young blokes who lost their jobs to help us out when required and in turn help

them out."

Mr Billman said it was wonderful to see so many people supporting Australian made and Australian owned products.

"We are really grateful. We really appreciate the support we have received from right across the local community and the country," he said.

"We always aim to spend our money here wherever possible and we hope other community members do the same. Our local businesses are doing it tough right now and they need our support."

Get on your bike

A guide to cycling happily, and observing the road laws Hi there cyclists, Pedalling Peta back again.

Last time I suggested to you that 'playing by the rules' - obeying the road laws - was a good way to earn the trust and respect of fellow road users.

We should add to that the benefits of predictability. The fact that most drivers do observe the road laws means we really can share the roads with a reasonable degree of safety as long as we are watchful and careful.

Driver behaviour is mostly predictable. We should be too.

Keeping to the left and riding in a straight line may sound like just commonsense, but it also helps drivers to predict our behaviour.

Making eye contact with drivers helps to confirm that the drivers have actually seen us.

Cyclists are smaller than other road users, and easy to overlook. In addition to the road laws we described last time, there are a few lesser known or observed rules worth mentioning.

Cycling on footpaths It is illegal to ride a bike on a footpath UNLESS you are younger than 13 years old, or accompanying a child of that age range. If you are riding (legally) on a footpath be aware of driveways where cars or pedestrians may come from. Better to ride well away from the fenceline, so you can see vehicles coming out.

Riding with a dog Riding with a dog is never a safe idea. It is

The project will link Woodend to Macedon, Macedon to New Gisborne and New Gisborne to Riddells Creek. The shared trails will enable residents and visitors of all abilities to enjoy cycling, walking, running and other activities.

Shared paths Where signage denotes a shared pathway, cyclists must keep to the left and give way to pedestrians. 'Pedestrian' includes walkers, people in wheelchairs and mobility scooters, people on roller blades, rollerskates, skateboards, nonmotorised scooters or something similar.

On a separated pathway, divided in two with a line and signed with symbols showing pedestrian and cyclist, you must stay on your side of the line.

Riding in bike lanes Where there is a designated bike lane (marked with a cycle stencil on the road) you must ride in that lane, UNLESS it is blocked by a parked vehicle, or other obstruction. Using a multi-lane road, it is legal to ride in the left lane to avoid riding close to cars parked along the side of the road.

Woodend cyclists Paul Doolan, Jem Richards, Dr Maxwell Winchester and Kim Strong are keen to see the trail take shape.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council will contribute $1 million to the project and begin working with public land managers to finalise the design.

Council's director of assets and operations Shane Walden said a project plan would need to be developed with works expected to start in the next financial year.

Companies engaged to complete the work will be required to find new employees through government initiative Working for Victoria in the first instance.

Rail trail still in sights While the Macedon Ranges Trails Project has been secured, the council continues to advocate for funding for a planned Daylesford to Hanging Rock rail trail.

The project's feasibility study estimates the rail trail will generate $2-$4.1M yearly in direct and indirect expenditure and support 25-51 new jobs. The rail trail would be expected to attract about 6690 local visits yearly and up to 62,580 visits from domestic and international tourists.

Mr Richards said the benefits were many and he didn't want to see the Macedon Ranges get left behind.

"We've seen a lot of dollars in the state going to different areas for cycling infrastructure and if we don't invest in the Macedon Ranges we'll see people going to other areas and spend their tourism money there…we'll get left behind if we don't do it," Mr Richards said.

The Daylesford (Tylden) to Woodend, Kyneton and Hanging Rock experience is proposed as a shared-use trail experience linking rural landscapes, towns and heritage along disused railway lines through Woodend, Kyneton and Hanging Rock. It is expected to link with the Macedon Ranges Trail at Carlsruhe, near the old Carlsruhe Station.

Construction on a Macedon Ranges shared-use trail will soon begin with the state government announcing $8.75 million towards the project last week.

Woodend's cycling community has welcomed the move following years of residents "crying out for more options" to cycle and walk safely between towns.

Spanning about 23 kilometres, the Macedon Ranges Trails Project will provide links connecting Woodend, Macedon, New Gisborne and Riddells Creek.

The project aims to encourage physical activity, economic benefits and provide safer transit options between towns without the need to get behind the wheel of a car.

Woodend cyclist Jem Richards expects the trail will help grow the number of recreational riders as a route away from busy and dangerous roads.

"I don't want to get into the car to do a short trip unless I really have to and I'd like my kids to feel the same way but I wouldn't let them ride to Macedon at the moment. When this trail is down I hope they'll be able to do that quite happily," he said.

"We've seen a lot of people taking up cycling right now. We want that to grow for both locals and people coming into the area.

This is really exciting."

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the trail would enhance the vibrant and varied tourism offerings and improve community health and social inclusion.

She said it would allow users to hook into local events, sample local food and produce and even consider an overnight stay within the Macedon Ranges towns.

"We need to be investing in projects now that will not only help our local economy recover from the coronavirus pandemic but will benefit our community into the future," she said.

School arts shine A grade six student's portrait of his best friend has been awarded this year's Primary School Children's Portrait Prize by the Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society, Central Victoria.

ADFAS CV chair Nicky Peters said Newham grade six student Eli Jacobsson greatly impressed the judges with his winning entry.

"We all felt that his technique was quite advanced and the portrait was a piece of art as opposed to just a sketch of a person," Ms Peters said. "(The subject's) eyes were really soulful and he captured the details of the young boy's face. It was a hands-down winner, and the judges were all in agreement."

Through its annual Young Arts program, ADFAS CV endeavours to support local students, schools or programs across a diverse range of the arts.

This year the focus was the Primary School Children's Portrait Prize and a School Project Prize for a school enterprise that involved all years and reflected the school's culture and creativity.

Despite the recent lockdown and restrictions, three local primary schools, Newham, Malmsbury and Hesket, submitted many endearing portraits and two schools presented imaginative and collaborative school projects.

Malmsbury and Newham Primary Schools both submitted creative and thoughtful school projects making the judging very difficult.

Judy Cope-Williams, a former ADFAS CV chair and long-time supporter of the society and champion of the local music community, judged the project submissions.

The winner was Malmsbury Primary School for a project to decorate a concrete pipe (used during playtime) that reflected the school's values and integrity. The school received $500.

Newham received a special commendation of $250 towards its mosaic wall.

For his portrait prize, Eli was awarded a $50 art supply package, and his school received $250 towards its art supplies stock.

Three local traders are displaying the submissions in their shop windows until June 1: Cusack and Cusack Art Gallery in Kyneton, Rathdowne Antiques in Malmsbury and Garden Tap Nursery in Kyneton.

"ADFAS CV would like to thank the participating teachers for their hard work and support of the students and congratulates all of the participants during this particularly difficult time," Ms Peters said.

"Finally, a huge thanks to the diligent and productive ADFAS CV Young Arts Committee, Diana Brady and Elizabeth Crauford."

Target stores become Kmarts

Target Country stores in Castlemaine and Woodend will be converted to Kmart outlets following last week's announcement from Wesfarmers of a major restructure.

Fifty-two Target Country stores in regional areas will be converted to small-format Kmart stores while a further 50 Target Country locations will be shut.

A Target spokesperson said that across the Kmart Group the company had made a significant effort to avoid store closures and retain its people and for impacted store team members it had the benefit of time to help find alternative employment opportunities.

"All team members in Target stores scheduled for conversion to Kmart will be offered the opportunity to join the growing Kmart team, for other affected Target team members, we will work with them to identify and offer other redeployment opportunities in Kmart, Catch, Bunnings and Officeworks as these businesses continue to grow," the spokesperson said.

"We believe that Target has a future as a leading retailer in Australia and we know it is loved by so many, but a number of actions are required to ensure it is fit for purpose in a competitive, challenging and dynamic market, including a smaller number of stores and a stronger online business."

The state government has announced the latest round of funding for renewable energy projects that promote regional investment and help lower electricity costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

The New Energy Jobs Fund makes $1 million in grants available to fund local projects that encourage more community-owned renewables and grow jobs in Victoria's regions.

Eve Lamb Maldon Urban Landcare has reason to feel well pleased with itself this week after being named among the local groups to secure some grant dollars through Mount Alexander Shire Council's latest round of community grants funding.

All up, 16 successful local groups and organisations have secured a grant - sharing in close to $48,000.

Announced at last week's council meeting, they range from a volunteering and mentoring initiative run by Castlemaine's Windarring, to first aid kits and cross country improvements for Castlemaine Pony Club.

Maldon Urban Landcare Inc has received a $1948 grant to help encourage locals to garden with indigenous plants.

"We're going to develop a brochure listing local native species of plants that occur in the bush here to try to encourage people to include natives in their gardens," the group's secretary Bev Phillips said.

"As our climate gets drier the prediction is that in 50 years we'll have the climate of Dubbo.

"The advantage in using local species is that they're use to dryness so you don't have to keep watering them."

Bev said the new brochures would list a wide variety of local indigenous plant species, from ground covers and creepers to

shrubs and trees, and would also list places to obtain them and tips to plant and care for them.

"We will distribute them to all of the Maldon households through the post and we'll also have them at the Visitor Information Centre and include them in welcome packs for new residents," she said.

"Planting natives helps to support the native birdlife and everything else - the lizards and insects."

Other projects to receive a grant include upgrading equipment at Maldon Museum and Archives to protect and preserve their collection, an environmental dam rehabilitation project run by Chewton Bushlands and equipment to support Able Radio, a program of MAINfm. Others include a literacy project for the Castlemaine Child Care Co-operative, new equipment for the Nuggetty Land Protection Group and a Castlemaine Goldfields Football Club initiative supporting social non-organised sport for adults.

Mount Alexander Shire Council received 24 funding applications that faced a rigorous assessment process.

Groups who missed out this time are encouraged to reapply for the next round of funding that opens in July.

A list of the newly funded projects is available on the Community Grants section of council's website.

Guns, drugs seized in Gisborne A 50-year-old Gisborne man has been charged after police uncovered cannabis, cannabis oil and imitation firearms.

Gisborne police made the discovery after executing search warrants at a Gisborne residence and a New Gisborne industrial property on May 13.

The Gisborne man has been bailed to appear at Kyneton Magistrates Court.

The Tesla Powerwall 2 is warrantied for 10 years. The payback for most households is at least 10 years - sometimes longer. So why get one?

Interest in battery storage is high at the moment, based on enquiries we are seeing through the MASH solar bulk-buy.

It is driven by a desire to become more independent from electricity retailers and the mains grid, protection from power outages and also to cut power bills.The good news is that the Victorian Government is supporting the uptake of battery storage with a generous rebate - worth up to $4,838 - through its Solar Homes program. This year, up to 1000 battery rebates are available to owner-occupied households in an increasing number of postcode areas. Fortunately, new postcodes in Mount Alexander Shire, Bendigo and the Macedon Ranges Shire were recently added to the 'eligible' list, driving up demand for battery storage in our area.

Eligible postcodes include most of the Macedon Ranges Shire - except for Macedon (3440) - Mount Alexander Shire - except for Maldon/Baringup (3463), Sutton Grange/ Metcalfe (3448) and Newstead/Welshmans Reef (3462) and most of the City of Greater Bendigo.

A couple of people from Metcalfe have asked, "Why have we been excluded?".

The Solar Victoria website says that for a postcode to be eligible it must be a high-growth suburb and have high solar PV penetration. My guess is they couldn't extend the rebate to all regions at once and will continue to rollout to more postcodes over the coming months and years.

What impact does the battery rebate have on the price of a battery through the MASH bulk-buy?

It brings down the price of the Tesla Powerwall 2 battery (arguably one of the most popular and powerful residential home battery systems) to $9990. To be eligible*, you need to have at least 5kW of solar panels and for the property not to already have received a rebate through the Solar Homes program. You can install 5kW of solar panels and then install a battery as part of the same order however you'd only be able to apply

Has the pandemic been a wake up call for Australia?How prepared are we for a scenario that cuts off our supplies of oil, petrol, foods medicines; our equipment for farms and industry, and transport?

Our reserves of many goods are practically zero. We depend hugely on imports and they come by ship. Who owns the ships? Not us.

What happens if a global conflict erupts?

What about the chemicals we import to treat our sewerage and our water?

Consider the impact if our two months' reserve of fuel ran out. There would be no trucks to carry our food and essentials.

That's bad enough.

We do not have anywhere near enough storage facilities. We have virtually no manufacturing industry, relying on overseas supply.

There is a lot more. A good number of prominent people are warning us but are they being ignored?

Kyneton and district has made it quite clear, over a long period of time, that the community choice for a future site manager for the old Baynton Street primary school precinct is the Town Square Co-Op. While not unanimous, this is the overwhelming opinion of residents. Fifteen community groups are signed up as organisational members of the co-op. Council's recent decision to put a bid into the DELWP process for the open space between the school buildings and the bowling club could have disastrous consequences.

If the council bid is successful the site will be fragmented and the town square vision of community responsibility and engagement in the hub project will be lost for ever.

The community clearly wants council collaboration, not council control.

The bid for control of the school site by two other local groups, Kyneton Community House and Social Foundry, is likely to accentuate the threat of fragmentation.

Both organisations are highly respected and Kyneton Community House is a valued and longstanding member of the co-op.

It is crucial, though, that the community presents a united front to the government. Local groups competing against one another opens the door to a bun fight of multiple control with the community ending up with the short straw. I hope common sense will prevail before June 1. I urge all local community groups to come together with the co-op to present a united community submission to the government.

Sleeping with Virus tracing one ear open

Judy and Korgi Liljekvist. table with a soft drink. On returning some 15 minutes later we found him sitting on his 'wheely-walker' inside the café demanding (very loudly) to be served with a red wine.

The staff were trying to explain to him that they could only serve him alcohol with a meal due to their licence. We left there after I had apologised most profusely to the staff who were, of course, not used to dealing with a person with dementia. Another lesson learnt and I never left him alone in a café again.

At home I was more fortunate than a lot of carers of people with dementia. My husband became quite immobile and therefore I was able to leave him for short times while I went to the supermarket. Or so I thought!

On one such occasion I came back into the house to find him on the phone.

Somehow (and I never found out how) he had got the phone number of an airline and booked himself a business class ticket back to Sweden. He had written down the phone number on a piece of paper, which I grabbed and immediately rang. I was able to explain that even if he managed to get on the plane (which was impossible without considerable help) for a long-haul flight, he would most likely have another stroke. Fortunately the woman at the other end was able to cancel the ticket before it got into the system. By the time I had finished the phone call he had already forgotten what he had just done and it was never mentioned again.

I cared for my husband for nine years and during that time I slept with one ear open (so he didn't mistake the wardrobe for the toilet, or have a fall), and our social life dried up (as happens when someone gets dementia), but I am very grateful to Woodend Lifestyle Carers for all their support. Woodend Lifestyle Carers is a group of people who have travelled the dementia path with a loved one.

They have published their stories in the hope that other carers may reach out for assistance.

Here, Judy Liljekvist shares her story.

Before my husband Korgi had his first stroke in 2009 he had been a test pilot for supersonic fighter jets in his homeland of Sweden and following his retirement we came back to live in Riddells Creek.

My first inkling that something was wrong was when we were driving back from a holiday in Queensland. Korgi took the first drive and I settled down to relax after pointing out that he was driving too slow to be on a freeway. As my eyes closed I had the feeling of going very fast and when I opened them I was confronted with us hurtling towards the back of another car.

Following my yelling at him to slow down he said "but you said I was going too slow".

I drove the rest of the way.

A few days later he suffered a stroke and it was then confirmed he had also had a stroke four weeks earlier while travelling alone to Sweden, for a family function. I was then told that he would be suffering dementia for the rest of his life, and so I became his carer.

The next year we decided to again go back to Queensland for a winter break. I checked us in at the airport, got the luggage organised and arranged to be transported down to the lounge. As soon as we had boarded the aircraft, Korgi asked for a red wine AND a beer. He was asked (very nicely) to wait until drinks were being served and I also explained he would have to wait.

However, the next time a flight attendant walked past he once again asked for a red wine and a beer NOW. Again it was explained he would have to wait and again I explained things. When the time came and he was asked if he would like a drink, once again he gave the same request. It was explained to him that due to rules he could only have one alcoholic drink. He argued quite vehemently and I ended up with an unwanted red wine and a very red face.

The next year I decided we should drive up to Queensland instead of trying to pacify things with a flight attendant. I had not realised that he would have to stop frequently for a pee and it could be anywhere in full view of anyone around.

We never went back to Queensland or on any other trip.

Sometime later, we had friends visiting from Sweden. As I normally did with visitors we took them up to Mount Macedon. After enjoying ice creams while sitting outside in the sun at the café we decided to walk to the Cross. Korgi couldn't walk very far so we left him sitting comfortably at the

This research could provide evidence to health authorities about how effective measures to slow the spread of coronavirus have been, increasingly important as Victoria relaxes lockdown measures.

Physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, while essential to protecting older Australians who are particularly vulnerable to the virus, may be causing social isolation and loneliness.

The Digital Connection for Seniors Project aims to support people over 65 in the Macedon Ranges to socially connect with family and friends using internet-enabled digital technologies.

There has been an increase in the use of electronic platforms that enable people to see and hear one another during the lockdown period. In addition, many essential services, clubs and support groups have moved online.

Thanks to some peer-led digital mentoring, members of the Gisborne Men’s Shed have been keeping in touch over the phone and internet while self-isolating, supporting continued connection and wellbeing.

Agile Counselling

Sixty-nine-year-old shed member Michael Fiteni spoke of the benefits of using his smart phone to stay connected while self-isolating.

“I use it to keep in touch with friends and family, follow the news, shop online and share songs and photos with my friends. I’ll be 70 this year, I can’t go anywhere without my phone. It’s now part of me!” Mr Fiteni said.

Young Australians studying from home during the COVID-19 pandemic still need to spend time outside to prevent near-sightedness, according to a researcher from The University of Western Australia.

The article, published last week in MJA Insight+, advises that the COVID-19 restrictions may have unintended consequences for the eye health of students in the long term if simple preventative measures are not applied.

While restrictions have eased, Australians are still directed to spend the majority of their time at home and many schools and universities have transitioned to remote learning, expecting students to study from home.

However, spending insufficient time outside has been linked with an increased risk of developing myopia, an eye condition that develops earlier in life and has long-term health consequences, including vision loss.

Australia has a relatively low prevalence of myopia in young adults of 20-25 per cent, partly attributed to Australian children spending more time outside.

Lead researcher Gareth Lingham, a PhD student from UWA’s Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and the Lions Eye Institute, said that without the incidental outdoor exposure that students get before, during and after school or university, there was an increased risk of developing myopia.

“Compared to children in Singapore, where the prevalence of myopia in young adults is around 80 per cent, Australian children spend up to one hour more time outside each day,” Mr Lingham said.

“The largest difference in outdoor behaviour between Australian and Singaporean children occurs during school hours.

“Australian children spent more

time outside before school, during recess and lunch times and after school, compared to Singaporean children.

“While it is not clear whether months of spending reduced time outdoors is enough to substantially increase risk of myopia, research into outdoor activities in school children has detected a significant difference in the incidence of myopia over a period of 12 months.”

Mr Lingham said in order to prevent a spike in the number of young Australians with myopia, children, adolescents and young adults should be encouraged to spend time outside, within the bounds of COVID-19 restrictions.

“The solution is simple in principle - encourage children, adolescents and young adults, particularly those studying from home, to spend a portion of their time outside, either around the home or exercising outside the home,” he said.

“Not all Australians have the luxury of an outdoor space, in which case sitting near a window or in an area that receives natural sunlight is a reasonable alternative.

“The COVID-19 restrictions are imperative to save lives, but we should be working to minimise the long-term harm of restrictions wherever possible.”

The real estate industry is working to adapt to a 'new normal' since COVID-19 precautions took ahold.

Local agents have responded quickly to the new climate, embracing technology and private inspections to get people into properties.

Terry Gibson, branch manager at Jellis Craig, said his staff are taking measures to make sure everyone is safe.

"We're still doing inspections with one person going through the property at a time," he said.

Brett Fitzpatrick from the Castlemaine Property Group believes that regional areas such as Central Victoria may see increased activity as a result of COVID-19.

"There may be more people who decide to move to regional areas to escape the city, should things worsen or there is another phase to the pandemic," he said.

COUNTRY WEDDING COCKTAIL DRESS. I wanted my cocktail dress design to be similar to a banksia bush in nature, looking like a hidden banksia inside bunches of leaves, with glimpses of the yellows and pinks shining through. I chose the banksia as an inspiration because it has fascinated me since I came to Australia, and has become my favourite native Australian plant. My cocktail dress design has an overlay to go over the top, using mostly mohair wool and linen. t was very different doing this task at home, rather than at school, but it was good in some aspects as I was able to be inspired by the flora and fauna from my own home, which I think made this task a lot more personal.

I mainly used two online collaborative tools to finish this project, Pinterest and Jamboard. I thought using Pintrest was extremely helpful because I got to collect ideas from areas as diverse as nature and red carpet dresses and designs.

The hardest part of doing this task at home was that we couldn't ask our teacher, Ms Caddey, questions or brainstorm with her, without using emails or Zoom. To her credit, Ms Caddey's email response time was flat out fast! But it was hard to not be able to

These entries for the 2020 Wool4Schools competition, completed by our Year 9 students, are just gorgeous.

Students from around Australia were tasked to design an outfit, inspired by flora and fauna, and incorporating fibres with at least 70% being made of wool. I think our design students’ entries are going to be hard to beat. The standard of these entries is even more impressive when you consider that they have been made during this time of remote learning. We wish them luck with their entries.

Maddie H (Year 9) SPIDER INSPIRED JUMPSUIT. My garments design is based on the green bottle blue tarantula. The tassels are inspired by the hypersensitive hairs all along their legs, the striking colours are naturally found on the spider and the web coat shows how their web, in particular, offers the comfort of home as well as a way of catching food.

The comfort of this garment is a nod to the docile nature of the green bottle blue tarantula. As I completed this task at home I enjoyed being able to access the materials I have there such as my pencils and sketching equipment, that I wouldn’t usually bring to school. I was also able to ask my family for advice, it was good to get a third-party opinion on the designs.

The most challenging part of completing this at home was finding some of the sources and information, as well as converting hard copy images into digital format for google slides. I think that it would probably have been easier to do this task at school because it is a dedicated learning environment and you can ask for advice and use hard copies of things instead of having to transfer them onto the computer. Our Remote Digital Incursion Year 8 RE students recently participated in a digital incursion which focussed on Jesus’ Jewish Roots. Presenter Barry Buriski, from Celebrate Messiah, showed great flexibility solving the challenge of a cancelled incursion by creating a digital version of his presentation. The video of the incursion informed students of the way Messianic Jews view Jesus and explained how Jesus is Jewish. Students were able to ask their RE teacher questions via Zoom following the video and completed a written reflection in response to the presentation.

On 15 May, students in 8B had an at-home incursion. Having an incursion at home was very different but overall it was still enjoyable; I found myself asking questions and extremely intrigued by the information provided by the presenter. I took away from the experience that we really do need to help each other through this time, and still need to try our best in every way we can. I am happy to have had this chance to learn about where Jesus was from and, on behalf of the Year 8s, would like to thank all of the teachers who planned this remote incursion for us as well Presenter Barry Buriski from as the presenter.

The Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League has not yet made a decision on whether its 2020 season will commence.

Trentham, one of 14 clubs in the league, advised its supporters of this at the weekend.

"We need to use common sense and follow the guidelines to ensure the health and safety of all club members to give us the best possible chance of the 2020 season beginning," the club stated.

Trentham senior football players are invited to return to small outdoor group training this Thursday (May 28).

Players wishing to attend are advised to contact Rick Dowling first - do not "just turn up".

Sam Whitehouse has been appointed as the club's COVID-19 officer.

Netball arrangements are excepted to be made public very soon.

Junior training at Trentham is to be reviewed at a later date, once further guidelines and restrictions have been reassessed.

Trentham president Marcello Matricardi said the club was very appreciative of any support, both from individuals and businesses.

"We are volunteers, and we do it for the love of the sport," Matricardi said.

In particular, he singled out the Trentham and District Community Bank (Bendigo) for a special mention.

The bank has helped the club in various ways, including running a mental health program for teens and those in their early twenties, provision of uniforms, and backing a gate entrance.

Country football clubs are encouraged to apply for up to $5000 from the 2020 WorkSafe club safety fund.

The fund provides assistance to improve the safety of grounds, or to provide added security for players, those involved, and spectators. Applications close on June 28.

Over the past 18 years, WorkSafe has helped over 300 football clubs with funding and assistance.

Romsey golf It was a hardy group of golfers who hit off in the club's stableford competition in challenging drizzle, winds and cold on Saturday.

As a further response to the coronavirus, the Wednesday comp is currently being held as a week-long 'running' competition. This is an attempt to offer opportunities to play on the course, and to optimise social distancing. Further changes include filling the holes with foam noodle pieces that prevent the ball resting in the bottom of the hole and allows golfers to remove their ball without contacting any other surfaces.

The weekly comp was played over two days. A highlight of the round was Jenny Hartley's chip-in birdie on the third.

Darlene showed all the backyard chipping practise during lockdown has been useful by scoring the best round for the week.

Results were: 1st Darlene Baker (21) 34 stableford points, 2nd Jenny Hartley (23) 29 pts, and 3rd Beryl Coke (27) 28 pts.

Lancefield golf The winner of the men's stableford competition on Tuesday May 19 was Wayne Mee 34pts. Ladies stableford competition winner on Wednesday May 20 was Flo Meyer 25pts.

On Saturday May 23, the men's stableford winner was: A Grade Steve Climas 37pts, B Grade Mark Cruise 39pts, C Grade Matt Darby 38pts. NTP 3rd Simon Nabbs, 5th Graeme Mau, 11th Andrew Hall, 16th Jason Byron, 18th Wayne Mee. Next week will be the start of pairs match play and the following week June Monthly Medal. Kyneton golf Wednesday was a stableford event of the day and winner was Tony Dibella (9) with 31 points from Ross Foreman (12) with 30 points. Balls went to Norm Cue, Noel Alldis and Gordon Stevens.

Saturday saw a field of 43, A grade winner was Jonah Harris (3) with 39 points from Terry Gamble (10) with 34 points, B grade winner was Ross Foreman (12) with 34 points from Ross Martin (11) with 33 points and C grade winner was Jing Biscocho (20) with 31 points from Mark Russell (18) with 30 points.

‘We just don’t know’ Bill West

What are the prospects of football and netball taking place across the Bendigo and Riddell leagues this season?

"We just don't know" is the current condensed summation from Gisborne Football Netball Club president John Wood (pictured).

While he was speaking to the Express following a BFL club presidents' meeting last week, and a follow-up gettogether of the Gisborne club's hierarchy with coaches, it seemingly reflected a wider feeling across both leagues.

The adjacent Heathcote District Football League has just 'pulled the pin' and cancelled its 2020 season due to COVID-19 impact and risk factors. Heathcote's decision may be contentious at this stage, but it provides certainty for clubs, players and supporters.

The state government's relaxation on health protocols means modified training was allowable from May 25, but Wood, and Macedon club president Andrew Dick, emphasised this was training only, with no indication that matches would eventually be played this season.

"There's no guarantee on games," the Bulldogs' president said.

Gisborne has detailed requirements to all players so they fully comprehend their responsibilities.

"Just to get back to training in your clubs is quite an onerous exercise … we have backed our coaches with an educational package to the players on protocols, and players need to understand.

"If there is a season, Gisborne will need to field three football and five netball teams …we don't know yet what the reaction of all players will be (to strict protocols)," Wood said.

The president said the general consensus of BFL clubs seemed to be that it would be no good having football and netball without spectators; a similar view has been expressed by many in the Riddell League.

No crowds would severely diminish the opportunity for clubs to raise revenue; running a football-netball club is

anything but cheap.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has been consulting with clubs in regard to use of grounds under its control.

Presidents of BFL clubs have been meeting by electronic means, rather than in person, on a fortnightly basis.

Announcements by Premier Daniel Andrews on Sunday did not shed any light on what community football clubs can expect; skate parks and playgrounds were reprieved from bans that had been in for some weeks, coinciding with a staggered return to school for some students this week.

AT MACEDON Late last week Macedon Football Netball Club's executive team, senior coaches and newly appointed COVID-19 officer Dom Andreacchio (former club president and welfare officer) reviewed the current situation.

The committee confirmed protocols and structure were in place for modified training to commence this week.

President Andrew Dick said football training would cover seven days, with additional sessions in Melbourne. Cats' netballers are likely to train at least three days this week.

Respective coaches will contact players to detail the training plan, rosters, criteria and requirements for training.

The president said the committee and coaches wanted to confirm taking part in training was voluntary.

If any players have concerns about training for their own personal reasons, there is no compulsion to train at all.

AT KYNETON Kyneton Football Netball Club players are among those keen to get stuck into training.

"We are waiting on information from both AFL Central Vic and the Macedon Ranges Shire Council," said KFNC acting president Julie Priestley.

"Once we have all the information we need, we will be able to make a decision on a return date for training. Our men's and women's footballers and netballers are keen to get on the track.

"Naturally many people are asking - when can we play?

And when can we train? The committee approach is to take one step at a time," she wrote.

Instant dividend from Perth buy Two for Osborne Bill West

It was from Perth to Kyneton, and on to Moe for a first-up win for a new group of owners and long-time local trainer Neil Dyer.

This is the absorbing story of Metro Boy, a four-year-old galloper with three city wins from 18 starts to his credit in Western Australia, and how he was almost stranded because of COVID-19 border shutdowns.

Dyer, best known for three Darwin Cup victories and Mrs Bentley's Kyneton Cup successes, gives all the credit to his 18-year-old son James for Metro Boy ending up in his care.

James, after a stint at carpentry, is now enjoying working with racehorses full-time in his father's Kyneton stables, and he spends some time looking online for possible "bargain buys".

He came across Metro Boy listed in an online auction, and told his father.

The sprinter, trained by Dan Morton and ridden by ace Perth jockey William Pike in all his wins, was passed in.

Neil Dyer followed up and found Metro Boy was available at what he considered to be a very reasonable price, perhaps due to uncertainty created by the pandemic.

An offer was made and the sale clinched just over two months ago.

A horse transport company initially could not guarantee Metro Boy would be freighted from Perth, due to imminent border closure because of the pandemic, but the trip finally took place and Metro Boy arrived in Kyneton.

A syndicate of 16 owners, including several Dyer stable clients and a couple of the original owners from Perth, got a quick return for their outlay.

"We love this horse, he's elegant with a fine temperament like you could have him in the backyard," Dyer said.

consequence, Dyer said he was not overconfident of what would happen at Moe in the BM64 race over 1011 metres last Tuesday.

In-form jockey Daniel Stackhouse was aboard.

"He had topweight of 61.5kg and a wide barrier, but Moe has a good surface and being three wide near the lead was not a disadvantage. He travelled well to the corner and took control in the straight," Dyer said.

"I think he may be one of those horses who saves their best for race day, rather than in track gallops."

The 450-kilometre round trip was successful, and Dyer said he hoped Metro Boy, who pulled up well after his first outing in Victoria, could continue on and eventually be competitive in midweek city company.

Metro Boy's win took his career earnings to over the $133,000 mark.

NO DARWIN THIS YEAR For the past 12 years Dyer has taken a team of gallopers to the Darwin Cup Carnival, and has a remarkable strike rate up north.

He's won every major race in Darwin, but this year the carnival has been cancelled because of COVID-19.

On reflection, Dyer thinks it may be a positive in that he can devote more time to building

up his team at Kyneton.

In the past, his gallopers coming back from Darwin have often been near the end of their preparations rather than being fresh and ready to go.

Last year Dyer actually trained 16 winners in the Northern Territory, far more than in his home state. He presently has a couple of wellbred young horses on the books, looking for owners.

ANOTHER FOR DYER It was a very good week for Dyer Racing, with Latest Bentley winning the Porter Plant Handicap narrowly at Ballarat on Sunday.

Ridden by apprentice Campbell Rawiller, the six-year-old travelled in third place for much of the 1400m journey and managed to hang on to beat the fast-finishing Rock'n' Rollrock, much to the delight of a large group of connections.

Lucky Bentley, starting at $11, chalked up his fourth race at his 37th start, for career earnings of $86,895. He had not won since October 19 last year at Kyneton.

Having always been in the Neil Dyer stable, Lucky Bentley is from the mare Mrs Bentley, who won 14 races and was very popular with Kyneton district racegoers.

Kyneton trainer George Osborne continues to turn out winners, with Tai Shan and Showbag successful late last week.

An unplaced favourite at his two previous runs at Ararat and Bendigo, Tai Shan scored impressively in a Maiden Plate for three-yearolds at Seymour on Thursday.

Ridden by in-form Craig Newett, Tai Shan began well at his fourth race start and was never headed over the 1200m journey, winning by 1.5 lengths from Altimeter.

Showbag started equal favourite in the 4-Y-O+ Maiden Plate over 1200m at Stawell on Friday, and Dean Yendall soon had the fouryear-old in front. He won by 1.5 lengths from Sweet Pickings.

Strong stable supporter Alex Babauskis is one of the part-owners of both Tai Shan and Showbag, with the latter's victory being the 36th for the Osborne stable from 296 starters in Victoria this season.

Maldon winner

Maldon co-trainers Brian and Ashley McKnight produced a longshot winner at Ballarat Synthetic races on Sunday.

Having only his second start, Logo Logic improved dramatically on his debut run at Stawell in January, and took out Maiden Plate over 1100m by 0.8 lengths from Sanbuck.

Ridden by Christine Puls, the three-year-old gelding raced by the McKnight family started at $31 in the 11-horse field.
