The face of farmers markets have changed across the region since coronavirus hit and has given rise to a more serious and intentional shopper, market facilitators have found.

Bendigo Farmers Market organisers have surveyed a 30 per cent increase in regular local shoppers since coronavirus hit and expect to retain these consumers into the future.

Manager for Castlemaine, Maldon and Bendigo Farmers Markets Chris Hain says, anecdotally, stallholders have noticed this change across the board as people actively seek to support local producers.

"We've seen a clear and strong pivot in that people want to support their local farmers, growers and producers. To some extent it is making up for what some stallholders have lost without their other means of trade with restaurants and those now with reduced activity or on pause.

"People say they prefer the market experience, enjoy connecting directly with the suppliers and generally feel the measures taken to ensure health and safety has been managed well."

Markets have been operating with strict

risk management guidelines set out by the Victorian Farmers Markets Association, which includes social distancing, good hygiene, encouraging cashless exchange and stripping non-essential elements such as entertainment. Woodend and Riddells Creek Farmers Markets manager Katherine Bishop said farmers markets had doubled as social events and attracted people from Melbourne, pre-coronavirus restrictions.

About 30-40 per cent of market-goers were typically from outside of the area and not necessarily shopping for groceries.

"Recently there have been fewer visitors but traders are noticing that a lot of people are actually choosing to spend more now," she said.

Ms Bishop said restrictions on travel and social events meant many were in a position to prioritise quality produce and try new products.

"There are a lot of options for people and it's really about finding high quality, locally grown food," she said.

"Farmers markets also have specialty items like truffles, saffron, pickles and chutney and there are new stallholders every month according to season. They are wonderful places to discover new things."

Another find for many market-goers has

been the difference in value compared to traditional supermarkets, says Lancefield Farmers Market's Vivien Philpotts.

"There's a common belief that farmers markets are more expensive - but we have seen that they are often better value," she said.

In one instance, a cauliflower comparison by a local resident found supermarket cost was $5.50 while Lancefield Farmers Market's price tag was $6.50. Ms Philpotts said the difference was, the vegetable was double in weight and it had been picked and sold the next day at market.

"Buying from the market means there are no or few food miles, it can actually be cheaper and you are supporting a local producer," she said.

Ms Philpotts said it felt as though people had changed their habits over the past few months and were relying more on local suppliers.

"There's a different feel: people are coming to buy rather than just browse. We hope that continues into the future and that people continue to see the value of shopping locally," she said.

"One thing the coronavirus has shown is that the supermarkets can't always be there when we need them."

Speedsters nabbed

Kyneton police nabbed a series of speedsters during two days of patrols of Macedon Ranges' local tourist areas to ensure there were no COVID breaches recently.

A black Holden wagon was detected travelling at 139km/h in a 100km/h zone on Trentham Road, Kyneton. The driver received a $620 fine with a six-month suspension.

Another vehicle was detected travelling south on the Calder Freeway near Gisborne at 133km/h, and landed a $330 fine with a three-month suspension.

A white 4WD was detected travelling at 144km/h in a 90km/h zone on Black Forest Drive, Macedon, and was slapped with an $826 fine and a 12-month suspension.

Another driver was detected travelling at 93km/h in a 60km/h zone, and received a $537 fine with a three-month suspension.

"For people who live in regional Victoria, where case numbers remain low, current restrictions will remain the same for now," he said.

"We've talked about this virus being like a public health bushfire. By putting a ring around metropolitan Melbourne, we're essentially putting in place a perimeter to protect regional Victorians."

Local police have been patrolling towns across the Macedon Ranges as part of Operation Sentinel.

Macedon Ranges Inspector Chris Large said that from the very beginning of COVID-19 they had been conducting routine patrols to enforce the chief health officer's restrictions.

"We're seeing a high level of compliance in the Macedon Ranges but I would encourage people who witness things that concern them to report it to Crime Stoppers (1800 333 000) or the Police Assistance Line (13 14 44) and from there you'll get a police response," Insp Large said.

A Kyneton business owner has refused to take bookings from people wanting to visit from Melbourne's coronavirus lockdown areas.

Ellenis Day Spa has had several people attempt to make a booking including one woman who argued that "nobody needs to know".

Owner Irene Thompson said the spa had also cancelled dozens of advance bookings from people living within Melbourne's lockdown zone.

"The feedback from many was positive, saying they're 100 per cent supportive of the measures and are looking forward to coming back to enjoy a 'covid-free' area once the Melbourne lockdown ends," Ms Thompson said.

Gisborne resident Michelle Minchew told the Midland Express she had heard reports of people from Hume and Melbourne attending appointments for personal services at other Macedon Ranges businesses since the lockdown restrictions came into effect.

"Anyone who has knowledge of people from lockdown areas breaking the law, and is not reporting it, is putting our towns and businesses at risk," she said.

"I'd encourage anyone who knows of people doing the wrong thing to report it."

Six weeks of stage 3 'stay at home' restrictions for metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire have been in place since July 8.

Premier Daniel Andrews said there would only be three reasons to cross the border of those metropolitan areas: Shopping for food and essential items; care and caregiving; and work and study - if it couldn't be done from home.

Election prep begins despite pushback Preparations have begun for the 2020 Victorian council elections despite renewed calls for a 12-month deferral as coronavirus impacts continue.

The Municipal Association of Victoria again last week called for the state to follow NSW's lead and postpone the October elections until 2021.

MAV president Cr Coral Ross said the ongoing pandemic had impacted the ability for candidates to campaign and consult with their communities on vital issues, and deterred many prospective candidates.

"With the current increase in COVID-19 numbers and the subsequent wide-scale lockdown, we are calling on the Minister to reconsider holding council elections in October this year," Cr Ross said.

The MAV's call follows a survey of all councils and CEOs earlier this year.

"Recent feedback has again highlighted the difficul-

ties of ensuring a level playing field for candidates campaigning for election to their council," Cr Ross said.

MAV's deputy president rural Cr Ruth Gstrein said there were rural and regional councils with concern that some wards might not be able to field candidates prepared to stand in the current environment.

Cr Coral Ross and CEO Kerry Thompson met with newly appointed Local Government Minister, Shaun Leane, to raise concerns earlier this month.

At this time, local councils are scheduled to go into caretaker mode from 12pm on September 22 to 6pm on October 24 and a range of information and training sessions have been planned.

Councillor info and training Macedon Ranges is offering information and training sessions in August and September for prospective councillors.

These optional sessions will cover topics including the role of local government and of councillors, developing an election platform, and how to campaign.

Mandatory candidate training is a new requirement in 2020 for anyone wishing to nominate as a candidate.

Local Government Victoria is developing an e-learning module that will be made available from late July to mid-September for prospective candidates to complete.

Enrol to vote All Victorians are urged to ensure they are on the electoral role if over 18 years old, an Australian citizen and have lived in Victoria for at least one month.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) update

The Victorian Government will continue to reduce the cost of the funded kindergarten program for families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister for Education James Merlino announced funding of $230 per enrolled child for four-year-old kindergarten in third term.

This is in addition to the free kindergarten families received in second term to give sessional kinder services funding certainty and to assist in declining enrolment numbers.

The four-year-old program will remain free for those who have a Commonwealth Health Care Card or Pension Card, identify as Aboriginal, or hold a refugee or asylum seeker visa under the existing Kindergarten Fee Subsidy program.

Macedon Ranges Council says it will continue to take its lead from Victoria's chief health officer and the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee, which has advised that Early Childhood Education and Care services can continue to operate with appropriate risk-mitigation measures in place.

Council's four-year-old kindergarten program has remained in full operation since the pandemic began.

Additional measures have been in place for several weeks to operate the service safely for staff, children and their families.

"I understand this is a big shift...but this virus is incredibly infectious - and this is about keeping people safe," Mr Andrews said.

Face coverings in regional Victoria continue to be recommended in situations where maintaining 1.5 metres distance is not possible - however regional Victorians must

wear a mask when visiting metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire for one of the permitted reasons.

Mr Andrews said the majority of new outbreaks were coming from settings where people were working closely together and launched an inspection and enforcement blitz in workplaces across the state.

WorkSafe, Emergency Management Victoria and Victoria Police will focus on at-risk workplaces in the blitz,

including distribution centres, call centres and meat processing centres.

As the risk of transmission in aged care and healthcare settings remains high, from July 22, visitation will be restricted to those defined as carers only, with a limit of one hour per day. A range of other measures have also been implemented across this sector.

The State of Emergency will be extended until 11.59pm on August 16.

Maternity EOI closes Friday

Macedon Ranges residents are urged to take advantage of free electronic waste disposal at council's transfer stations.

It has been one year since the Victorian Government banned all e-waste from landfill and council's director of assets and operations Shane Walden said locals had room for improvement.

"While many residents had been vigilant in ensuring e-waste was kept out of household bins, we can do better," Mr Walden said.

"Recent bin audits have shown some electronic items have been incorrectly placed in household bins. We've also seen illegal dumping of e-waste across the shire."

Mr Walden said e-waste had been banned from kerbside collection bins to ensure potentially hazardous and valuable materials were kept out of landfill and the soil.

"We urge residents to do the right thing and take e-waste to their nearest transfer station, where they can drop it off for free," he said.

"By doing this you can help us preserve our beautiful environment and keep our shire litter free."

Mr Walden said illegal dumping should be reported to the council.

All electronic items including fridges, washing machines, TVs and other household electrical appliances can be disposed of at no charge at council's three transfer stations along with all other recyclable materials.

Council has transfer stations in Kyneton, Woodend and Romsey.

"Youth Justice expects the highest standards of conduct in line with health advice from all education staff visiting our facilities, including the practice of physical distancing," they said.

"Deep cleaning has been completed and contract tracing is underway in line with the Youth Justice coronavirus Management Plan, and we will continue to monitor the health of the centre and provide support to young people and staff.

Entries for the 2020 Castlemaine Poetry Prize are now open.

In the Senior Section (poets 16 and over) two awards will be presented this year for 'Best Poem' and the 'Judge's Choice Award'.

Relocatable reimagined

The annual awards for the Australian Institute of Architects celebrate the best of the state's architecture across 15 different categories.

Designed by Workshop Architecture in a project of re-use where new was precluded, the STEM centre for Mount Macedon Primary School re-valued a building type that is often simply endured.

With insufficient funds to build what the school needed, the architects took the unusual step of extending the

1960s era relocatable classroom that housed the school's art and music activities.

Adding an explicit learning area, outdoor maker deck and entry ramp around this little building created a variety of teaching spaces, bringing science and technology studies alongside art and music.

Appearing as extrusions from the windows of the existing classroom, the plywood clad roof trusses are the addition's primary architectural element.

A pavilion that becomes a room, the truss profiles are edited by the wedge of space the addition occupies, shaping the relocatable's DNA into a new

companion. Workshop Architecture worked with the entire school community, including students, to develop a concept that embraced their needs and sympathetically reflected the school's desire to create a building that sat comfortably within its beautiful, rural environment.

The building allows students and staff to move freely between different, unique spaces and increased undercover play space, which is important in a cool, mountain climate.

The STEM facility quickly became known as the STEAMM room and has elevated the staff and students' sense of pride in the school environment.

Builders appointed

The Pienwa building at 65-67 Templeton Street Castlemaine has been leased to Bendigo TAFE since 2009.

Council to decide TAFE lease terms

The future terms of lease for a central Castlemaine building used by Bendigo TAFE will be considered at tonight's Mount Alexander Shire Council meeting.

The Pienwa building at 65-67 Templeton Street Castlemaine has been leased to Bendigo TAFE since 2009 but the lease expired in December 2016 and is currently in over holding.

This means the Bendigo TAFE as tenants are currently subject to a month-to-month tenancy arrangement with the council.

"Having a lease in over holding poses a financial risk to council because the tenants can vacate the building with only one month's notice," an officer's report now before the council states.

In an effort to provide security of occupancy, council officers have been attempting to obtain a commitment with Bendigo Kangan Institute - the governing body of Bendigo TAFE - for a new lease since early 2016.

A representative from Bendigo Kangan Institute had approached council officers in March 2019, advising that a greater number of classes were being offered at the premises and requesting to enter into a new lease to allow ongoing provision of Bendigo TAFE services at the Castlemaine site.

They had also proposed that part of the premises would be sub-tenanted.

It's understood that Bendigo Kangan Institute is interested in a lease term until the end of 2021 and will consider further terms.

At this evening's July council meeting, Mount Alexander Shire councillors will be tasked with deciding whether to agree to these terms and advertise them enabling opportunity for public input, before a new lease is signed off on.

Gisborne's Primary School's $10 million upgrade is a step closer with Newton Manor Constructions appointed last week.

The upgrade will include a new competition-grade gymnasium and administration building, along with refurbished learning areas and playground facilities.

"The new gymnasium at Gisborne Primary School will not only be a fantastic facility for the school, but for the entire Gisborne community," Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said.

Stage one of works to the school have been completed and included refurbishment of learning areas to create a more modern learning environment.

Stage two works are expected to be completed mid-2021.

Ms Thomas said the works were part of the school building boom for the area that included upgrades at New Gisborne Primary School, at Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School in Bullengarook and a new school and kindergarten to be built in the south of Gisborne.

Six gold rings and two silver rings have been handed in to Trentham Police Station after they were found by a young girl on the ground at Trentham Lake on Sunday July 12.

The rings have distinctive markings on them and police are searching for their owner.

Ingrid the Hen has a new way of getting around and her new set of wheels has attracted much attention. She is pictured with Edgar’s Mission’s Pam Ahern.

When Ingrid the hen tore a muscle at Lancefield animal sanctuary Edgar's Mission, a wheelchair was custom-built to help with her recovery. Little did she or her carers know that her story would be shared Australia-wide.

While a chicken in a wheelchair is a unique sight, Edgar's Mission founder and director Pam Ahern said it was never in question that this was the best course of action for the beloved bird.

"Over and over, the ability of animals to cope in the face of adversity inspires us to become more creative and innovative to

ensure they can have lives truly worth living," she said.

"In Ingrid's case that means a wheelchair, laser therapy, and of course kindness in abundance."

Ingrid is a 'broiler' chicken, a bird selectively bred for consumption, which means her genetics are geared towards rapid growth.

"This presents a unique set of challenges, when caring for these birds who were only ever meant to live around five short weeks," Ms Ahern said.

However, experience over the years caring for rescued chickens bred for meat

has taught the team at Edgar's Mission much about how "curious and endearing these birds are" and "despite their large size, they still have the same zest for life as their smaller counterpart chickens".

Through special diets, exercise and lots of enrichment, many of these feathered wonders have gone onto live several happy and fulfilled years.

Footage of Ingrid enjoying a meal from the comfort of her wheelchair soon attracted national media attention, with the plucky hen recently appearing on national Nine News and Melbourne media.

Winters Flat shines in sustainability

Work underway on new stations Work is underway on three new train stations in the Greater Bendigo area, which will provide easier and more flexible transport options for local residents, thanks to a $49.6 million investment from the state government.

Last week's surveying work at Goornong, Huntly and Raywood comes after extensive site investigations earlier this year, including groundwater sampling and geotechnical drilling to determine ground conditions.

Planning is also underway to ensure construction of the new stations happens at the same time as the Bendigo and Echuca line upgrade, minimising disruptions to regional commuters.

The new stations will each feature single-sided platforms with lighting, tactile paving, seating, pedestrian shelters and car parking with lighting and CCTV. The 2019-2020 state budget also included funding for a feasibility study into the potential re-opening of a station at Harcourt. This planning is still underway.

Castlemaine's Winters Flat Primary School was delighted to once again be a finalist in the 2020 Resource Smart Awards.

The school was a finalist in the in the 'Community Leadership School of the Year (Primary)' and the 'Curriculum Leadership School of the Year (Primary)' categories.

The ResourceSmart Schools Awards celebrates Victorian schools' leadership in sustainability and the active role they play as champions for the environment in their wider communities with awards presented by Sustainability Victoria.

2020 winners across 11 categories were announced during an online YouTube ceremony with radio personality Sammy J on World Environment Day last month. Across the categories, finalists and winners showcased the incredible efforts of principals, teachers, students, parents and volunteers, and spotlighted the impactful and inspiring work of Victorian schools in the field of sustainability.

Winters Flat claimed the top honour the ResourceSmart School of the Year award in 2015 and was the winner of the 2016 Premier's Sustainability Award.

It is also a Five-Star Leadership school. Five-Star schools must demonstrate significant leadership in each of the five ResourceSmart Schools modules of Core, Biodiversity, Energy, Water and Waste as well as actively help other schools to start their own sustainability journey, and show the Victorian community what can be done at the local level.

Winters Flat Primary School principal Suzanne Kinnersly congratulated all those who made the latest achievements possible.

"Thanks to Terry (Willis) and our dedicated teachers, parents and students who continue to excel in their efforts to meet our ResourceSmart goals and targets in the area of sustainability year after year," she said.

No judgement, just support A bit of a joke as respite care was and is near impossible to get.

When you are a full-time carer, your brain is often muddled. The complexity of government forms is mind boggling and finally the process of placing your loved one into permanent care is like writing a PhD. However, someone in the group has been through it before you and can help guide those new at this.

Sometimes all I would do at our gatherings was sit and cry, other times we would laugh together at some of the funnier sides to being a full-time carer. Nobody ever judged you because even though we might have been on different pathways we were all on the same journey.I was able to care for my husband for six years, but finally as his Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s became worse, Leon needed full-time professional care. I was riddled with guilt when this happened because I had promised him many years before on our wedding day that I would care for him “for better or worse” and I felt that I had let him down badly. Fortunately I was able to get a bed for Leon at The Oaks in Gisborne, which was right next door to where we now lived, so I was able to see him daily. We continued the tradition we had established some 30 years before in Bullengarook of having Thirsty Thursday. One of our sons put a fridge in Leon’s room and I kept it full of beer and wine. On Thursday evenings we would stand around in his room talking and laughing and even arguing about footy, or just things in general. Towards the end Leon was non-verbal and he could only enjoy his beer if I held it for him in a sippy cup.

He would look up at me while I performed this duty and his eyes told me he was still enjoying himself.

Leon’s death in September 2016 rocked my world. His was a peaceful death, he was surrounded by his family who had always been there for him. I still miss him very much, but I believe he is in a better place.

Here, Carmel Clemson shares her story of caring for her partner Leon.

My husband Leon died nearly four years ago. He/ we had lived with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease for six and a half years.

Leon was a former engineering blacksmith with Massey Ferguson in Sunshine. When they closed down he became a youth worker, working with troubled youth at what was then Turana youth training centre in Parkville. It is now known as the Juvenile Justice Centre.We had a large family and Leon was a great provider and an excellent father and grandfather. I first noticed changes in his behaviour when we were still living in Bullengarook and making frequent trips into Gisborne and Carmel and Leon Clemson. beyond. Young Voices continue to Zoom The Young Voices of Macedon had planned to return to live rehearsals at the Norma Richardson Hall in Woodend in third term but it has proven necessary to extend the Zoom arrangement until restrictions in Greater Melbourne are lifted. Several choristers and teacher Emma West live in Sunbury and are experiencing lockdown.

Choir director Dianne Gome said the teaching staff had become remarkably proficient in the development of alternative teaching strategies to accommodate the drawbacks

of Zoom rehearsals, and the children had adapted magnificently, taking increased responsibility for learning choir songs at home.

"At the end of second term, which was entirely Zoombased, the choir had mastered several songs including some very challenging material from the Captain Noah jazz cantata," Ms Gome said.

"We are well on the way to making a CD of our 'ISO' efforts, a project of which our singers will be very proud

CFA crews from Gisborne and Riddells Creek along with Sunbury Fire Rescue Victoria responded to a laundry fire at a Railton Court address in Gisborne just before 5pm last Wednesday.

Smoke was issuing from the house as firefighters wearing breathing apparatus assisted an elderly resident to evacuate before proceeding to the laundry where they found a clothes dryer fully alight.

Incident controller Bevan Moody said firefighters managed to contain the fire to the laundry.

"Within five minutes of arriving our crews extinguished the fire. A ceiling

hook was used to gain access to the roof space above the dryer and a thermal imaging camera was used to ensure there was no further spread of fire," Lt Moody said.

"It is a timely reminder with dryers being used more frequently this time of year to clean the lint filter out regularly."

A positive pressure fan was used to clear the house of smoke. After it was deemed safe by the incident controller, power was restored to the dwelling and the occupants were able to safely go back in the house.

A competition has launched to help name council's bin mascot, which will promote good recycling habits and use of the revamped kerbside collection system.

As part of the council's ongoing 'Let's get sorted' community waste education campaign, the bin mascot will appear around the shire at schools and events.

The mascot has four lids, each one reflecting the colour of one of the council's kerbside bins - yellow for recycling, red for general waste, purple for glass only and lime green for food organics garden organics.

The competition is open until August 14.

Tune in to nature podcast

Flora and fauna will be the stars of Macedon Ranges Council's new 'Macedon Ranges Nature Pod' podcast.

Council's director of planning and environment Angela Hughes said development of the series was fast-tracked when most events in the environmental program were cancelled.

"Our environmental program activities are often sold out so we know there is interest from the local community. With tight pandemic restrictions in place we wanted to develop content that residents can enjoy from their own homes," she said.

Initially three podcasts will focus on sounds in nature that locals might experience in their own backyard.

Learn how to identify frog calls and common day and night backyard birds with audio clues and fact sheets that can be downloaded.

Hi cyclists, Pedalling Peta back again.

Last time I talked to you about being aware of what is happening around you on the roads, and briefly talked about road conditions you might encounter.

Much of our discussion has been about us, and what we can control, but there are quite a few things in our cycling environment beyond our control. Being conscious of those things is also very important to our safety and enjoyment. It may mean simply avoiding those places and situations.

Consider these elements - time of day, the weather, the physical environment, and other people.

First - time of day changes some risk factors.

Dusk, particularly in winter, is a risk time. People knocking off work are often keen to get home, and a cyclist (particularly in dark clothing) can be at risk.

Cycling near schools in mornings (8.30-9am) and afternoons (3.30-4pm) is potentially hazardous as parents delivering or collecting young children can be very focused on that task, and not notice you. Rain also raises a cyclists risk factor as windscreen wipers create another distraction for drivers.

Second - roundabouts create a focal point for drivers busy watching other vehicles and negotiating their turn in the roundabout. Entrances / exits to supermarket carparks also create a strong focus for drivers. Pedestrians in that mix further raises our risk.

Drivers can easily miss seeing a cyclist in both situations.

While considering traffic situations, be very alert while riding past parallel parked cars in shopping areas. Barker and Mostyn Streets in Castlemaine, and Mollison and High Streets in Kyneton are classic 'dooring' opportunities. Many drivers getting out to go shopping have that task uppermost in their minds, and some don't think to check their wing mirror before opening the driver's door.

In shopping streets, the density of traffic creates pressure for drivers. Lots of movement with other cars and pedestrians might mean a driver just doesn't see a cyclist. A reader has suggested that a sticker featuring a bicycle on the inside of driver's doors may help. We will pursue this idea.

Finally, let's be positive. What can we do to stay safe?

The best, simplest, positive strategy is to be visible. Wearing bright clothing, whether it is hi-vis vests or not, is still our best protection. If drivers see you they will give you room.

Secondly, smart thinking means avoiding the danger spots, and finding a safer less hazardous route, particularly at the peak times mentioned earlier. Cyclists have flexibility in route choice. Smart cyclists think safe and protect themselves.

Eve Lamb A Harcourt family business has developed a new alcoholic mango beverage that's poised to take off nationally following uptake by a large Australia-wide retail chain.

Mango Smash is an eight per cent sparkling alcoholic mango drink that Harcourt Valley Vineyards has now begun producing on a considerable scale, by fermenting Queensland mangoes, at Harcourt.

After much experimentation and trial, the local family business first released its unique mango brew in limited quantity in May, starting with some selected local bottle shops and some in Queensland also.

But now Coles First Choice Liquor and Vintage Cellars have confirmed they'll be stocking Mango Smash nationally from the start of October - and by all accounts the growth potential is as juicy as a ripe mango.

"I'd say this has huge potential," Harcourt Valley Vineyard's Kye Livingstone told the Midland Express.

The family business is well known already for its award-winning wines and its Ginger Kid ginger beer that's proven a pleaser with many imbibers.

Ginger Kid has no shortage of loyal fans but Kye believes Mango Smash may enjoy even wider appeal than the gingery thirst quencher.

"I think it could even be bigger than Ginger Kid because some people don't like ginger, but there's not many who don't love a mango," he says.

They obtain fresh mango pulp from Queensland to make the new mango brew which, Kye says, is neither a cider, nor a flavoured beer.

"It's unique. As far as we know there's nothing quite like it," he says.

They ferment it in large 25,000-litre fermentation tanks at their Harcourt property and right now they're pretty busy.

"We presented it to Coles for their range review and both First Choice and Vintage Cellars confirmed they would range it nationally from October this year," Kye says.

"It has already hit independent stores from Tasmania to Queensland with all our interstate distributors placing orders.

Queensland in particular is looking promising with the distributor already ordering another two pallets.

"We are now making another 12,000 cases before December to meet summer demand.

"Before December we need to produce 300,000 litres of product. That's including both Ginger Kid and Mango Smash. So, close to one million bottles to meet the summer demand."

Kye and brother Quinn Livingstone say the national uptake of Mango Smash is going far to compensate for earnings lost to their business due to COVID-19 impacts.

"Our cellar door has been closed for three months and we've lost 12 weddings for our function centre, and we also lost our Easter festival," Quinn says.

Coles Liquor Group's First Choice national beer manager Anthony Bannister says Ginger Kid is growing at 72 per cent FYTD, ahead of the flavoured beer category growth of 60 per cent as interest in flavoured beer continues to build.

"Customers have really embraced ginger beer as a style and we are excited about how they may embrace other flavour varieties into the future."

I am angry. Disregarding the orders of our government, designed to protect us, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of Melbourne people slithering into regional areas such as ours via back roads and devious other means.

Why are they doing this? Is it to show how clever they are? Or how stupid and reckless.

What they are doing may not be strictly illegal but it is certainly immoral.

To them I say "Go home. We do not want you here. Please consider our health and indeed our lives."

If I know of or suspect anyone of being here against the government orders I will not hesitate to call the police. I urge everyone to do the same.

In this case it is absolutely correct to dob people in.

A time to reflect Deb Shand, Castlemaine At times, it is easy to believe that all is well with the world.

As I walk my dog in the evening, the setting sun paints clouds gold. Below, in the

valley, the buildings of my little town nestle among green pillows of trees. Beyond, the sky hangs pink above the mountain.

But all is not well. A virus stalks among the people of our city and many other cities throughout the world. Businesses and economies teeter on the brink of collapse.

Far away in Siberia, one of the coldest places on Earth, there is a record heatwave causing wildfires to burn and permafrost to melt sending greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Hearing this news reminds us of the terrible bushfires that raged through our country only six months ago. Then we wore masks to stop the smoke of burning trees and animals from entering our lungs. Now we wear masks to stop a virus entering our lungs and stealing our breath away.

Storm clouds of chaos and uncertainty gather on the periphery of our minds. While we fret over COVID-19 figures, our politicians seek to dismantle environmental laws and allow mining companies to destroy ecosystems and ancient caves.

Despite these grave threats to our existence, sunsets are still to be enjoyed.

Lockdown can be a gift: a time to reflect, to eat well, to read and rest, to grow gardens and ourselves.

Each of us has a responsibility to steer our Earth onto a better course.

Towering achievement for ambitious project Lisa Dennis The Victorian Miniature Railway recently achieved an exciting milestone in the construction of its Harcourt Miniature Railway project - installing the impressive clocktower that forms part of the central station.

VGR president Andrew Mierisch said the volunteers from VMR and the Harcourt Lions Club were thrilled to achieve this critical milestone.

The finished tower will be complete with four working clocks.

Mr Mierisch said their volunteers had been continuing to quietly work behind the scenes to keep their exciting project on track since they unveiled the first stage of their ambitious build in December - the sprawling central station modelled on Maryborough's magnificent railway station constructed in 1890.

However, the latest COVID lockdown in Melbourne has now thrown a spanner in the works.

"Things had been moving along nicely. In February we installed our new front gates, in March we showcased the project at the Harcourt Applefest and in May we got the tower up and we then began to get stuck into preparing the footings for the 80 metre platform and verandah," Mr Mierisch said.

"We were on track for a planned December opening but this will now be dependent on a number of factors including weather and the pandemic.

"A lot of our volunteers are Melbourne based so we are currently stuck in lockdown. Our local volunteers can only do so much.

"We were pushing hard to open at the end of the year and we are really hopeful that we can still do that."

Mr Mierisch said their Melbourne-based volunteers were still working away fabricating what they could in their home workshops and it would be all hands on deck as soon as they were able.

"VMR's resident horologist (clock maker) Colin Mierisch is busy putting the finishing touches on the clocks and has also constructed a unique clock made of rail parts which will stand in pride of place in the waiting area of the station," he said.

"The track is ready to be laid. We need to get those footings in so we can build the platform and get the remaining tracks down.

"A lot of the next stage involves large construction elements that have to be built on site but we are doing what we can.

"We are also looking forward to the delivery of the Bendigo Signal Box B which will stand alongside our car park and will be the home of the Harcourt Lions Club.

"Every step is dependent on our talented volunteers in order to assist our contractors and keep our costs down so we are hopeful that we can get back into it soon."

When complete the railway will feature the longest miniature rail track in Australia and is sure to be a premiere tourist attraction for the region.

Not safe to gather Cathy Wheel, Castlemaine Glyn Roberts' comment "virus or no virus, come March next year the Castlemaine State Festival will happen" is a reckless thing to say. I don't understand how plans could proceed for a festival in the middle of a pandemic. Health authorities don't expect a vaccine for two and a half years and the message over and over again is that we must learn to live with this virus. We have no idea how long this contagion will last, but it will certainly not be safe to invite travellers and visitors to gather for festival events in nine months' time.

Editor's note: Mr Roberts did go on to explain that festival organisers were factoring in adaptation to the shifting COVID-19 landscape and looking at all scenarios and formats that were "safe and possible".

Time for your pet’s dental check?

A dental check-up allows a full oral health checkup, diagnosis and/or treatment for any oral issues with your pet. Animals are presented to clinics for a dental check up for a variety of reasons - you may have noticed some discoloration of the teeth, bad breath or inflamed gum lines. Your veterinarian is the best person to diagnose any disease or abnormalities in the oral cavity.

During an oral exam, your treating vet will assess not only the teeth, but also the gums, cheeks and tongue.

Your vet may suggest a dental procedure which involves having your pet go under a general anesthetic. This allows a more thorough examination of the mouth and attend to any problems. Assessing your pet's oral cavity while asleep may also include radiography to examine what is happening underneath the gum line. The dental procedure will include removal of plaque and tartar by an ultrasonic probe and smoothing of any micro-abrasions on the teeth.

After a dental examination, your vet or nurse will discuss a treatment plan for ongoing oral health care.

This may include adding a dental food into the diet, oral rinses or water additives to help fight plaque, maintain oral health and freshen breath.

Brushing your pet's teeth is also an option. This is not a task suited to everybody and can take some time to getting used to for both human and companion.

Treats and dental chews can also be used, although not the most effective preventative measure, they are a very easy option.

Cats are best at home and indoors. While most cats would not agree with this, it is for their own good and the good of wildlife and others who naturally live outside.

While cats in Macedon Ranges Shire are now under curfew and cannot be outdoors between sunset and sunrise, it is something cats in Mount Alexander Shire could soon be adhering to.

The shire has recently run a survey on the control of cats - and dogs - in the shire and while it only closed last Friday and has not been 'pawed' thoroughly over yet by shire officials, cats there too, could be confined to barracks when its dark outside.

The RSPCA is one animal welfare organisation which is promoting the restriction of cats' movements.

RSPCA says cats are safer at home, don't let them roam. While recent new analysis shows the significant impact pet cats have on Australia's wildlife, RSPCA Victoria states several compelling reasons for people to keep their cats safe at home. RSPCA Victoria recommends that owners prevent cats from leaving their property at any time. This can be achieved by keeping cats indoors, or a combination of indoors and a secure outdoor enclosure, or cat-proof fencing around an outdoor area. In other words, keeping cats safe at home and not letting them roam.

Contrary to popular belief indoor cats have the same, or better, quality of life than outdoor cats. According to the Australian Veterinary Association, a pet cat kept safe at home can live up to four times longer than a cat left to roam.

"Therapies such as massage, joint mobilisation, stretching and targeted exercise programs have become increasingly used in the management of osteoarthritis. Other therapies such as cold laser and therapeutic ultrasound are also being investigated," Dr Fearnside said.

"While a cure for osteoarthritis is not yet in sight, we do have many management options available to us in our effort to reduce pain and improve the quality of life of our pets suffering with the disease," he said.

This year, there are three different ways to calculate your home office deductions.

In April, the Australian Tax Office announced a new method for claiming expenses for working from home due to the coronavirus pandemic. Using the 'shortcut' method, you can claim a tax deduction of 80 cents for each hour worked from home between March 1 and September 30.

That 80 cents covers running expenses, like utilities, phone, internet, and decline in value of capital items such as office furniture and computers.

It's important to remember that the shortcut method can only be used for hours worked from home from March 1. If you were working from home before that date, you would need to use one of the other methods to claim for your hours before then.

You also cannot claim any other expenses for working from home using this method. If you've bought new equipment or furniture, or spent significant amounts on phone or internet, you might be eligible for a more significant deduction using one of the other approaches, such as the fixed-rate or actual cost methods.

Gisborne Peak Winery is offering local customers something it hasn’t ever offered before - dinner!

On Friday and Saturday nights, Gisborne Peak is inviting dinner guests to come early and enjoy the winery’s social hour. Drinks will be offered in the marquee that has been set out in a lounge style where dinner guests can have a pre-dinner drink and some nibbles before going into the Fireside Room for dinner. Social distancing will still allow for a cosy atmosphere with background music. Social hour is from 5.30pm - 6.45pm with dinner sit down at 7pm.

There are additional dishes on the dinner menu, some served with roast potatoes because the wood-fired oven makes the best roast potatoes.

Along with their wood-fired pizzas and regular menu, they will even be offering a grilled hamburger as well as a few new options including new entrees.

There is a choice of appetisers, entrees, mains, desserts and some extras as well.

Minimum spend is $40pp plus wine and drinks at social hour.

The winery will also continue to offer its Pizza and Wine Deal and its Gisborne Peak in a Box, both of which have been very popular. These two takeaway deals are offered until 7.30pm on Friday and Saturday nights and daily until 5pm.

It was with great shock and sadness that we at Healthy Pets Vet Clinic learned of the sudden tragic loss of Judy Davis this week.

Great day out for juniors

Kyneton District Soccer Club's Under 10s mixed team had the first match of the day in Castlemaine with fresh conditions of only three degrees at kick-off.

Castlemaine shot out of the blocks early to jump to a 3-0 halftime lead. Kyneton competed and had half a dozen good shots on target however the Castlemaine goalkeeper did a great job at shutting them out. The second half was a different story however as the Rangers regrouped and ran hard scoring three goals to one.

The first goal of the second half was of particular note as it involved a number of completed passes to set up the goal by Joshua Dick, followed by goals to Ethan Willis and Oscar Pereira.

The match ended in a nail biting 4-3 win to Castlemaine and loud cheers from all supporters.

Meanwhile the Under 8 girls, coached

by Kate Kuyateh, played in Bendigo in the non-competitive competition.

The team ranges in age from five to seven years and it was the first time any of them had ever played a game of soccer.

The goalkeeper Edi made some great saves and Abbigale managed to score a goal. Overall they all put in a huge effort and enjoyed themselves.

Kyneton golf The first round of Kyneton Golf Club's men's singles knockout took place on Saturday.

Jonah Harris and Barry Murphy were in top form, each winning 5/4 against respective opponents Nathan Thompson and Jason Coley.

Other winners were Graham Hackett (walkover), Damian Summers, Louis Thompson, Noel Alldis, Glenn Cook, Mat Hodgkiss, Russell Turner, Nick Williamson, David Moore and Russell Bramich.

Darcy McCarthy (35) won the individual handicap with 37 points, from Namik Akkurt 32.

The women's winner was Tracey Bramich (24) with 34 points.

The four-ball multiplier stableford provided interesting challenges at Romsey on Saturday, with a much-improved course after a week free of rain.

Players who had a 'wipe' on the card meant the team scored zero on that hole.

Pat Chisholm (11) and Scott Williams (16) had 53 points to finish five clear of Andrew and Toby Clement, and Michael and Joshua Squire.

The semi-final of the John Laing Shield was a tight affair, with Ryan Davies taking advantage of receiving seven shots to beat Andrew Laing 2up and earn the right to play Rob Rea in the final.

Wednesday stableford: The course was in good shape thanks to the valued work of volunteers through the pandemic.

Women (composite course): Darlene Baker (21) 34 points, from Jenny Hartley 30 and Elaine Scanlon 24.

Men (red tees): Woodend visitor Trent Cannon (19) 34 won from Toby Clement 29 and Ryan Davies 24.

Lancefield golf A countback was necessary to decide the winners of the four-member teams stableford at Lancefield on Saturday.

Denis Davenport, Petr McGill, Barry Brennan and Steve Draper scored 86 points to edge out Mark and Aaron Cruise, and Mark and Aaron Andrews.

The five nearest the pins went to Hugh Parks (2), Barry Brennan, Chris Lingard and Steve Climas.

Mason Memmolo was the individual A grade winner with 41 points, Brennan won Bgrade with 37, and Mark Cruise 41 topped C grade.

SPORTS wrap Katrina’s need for speed …

Katrina McAdam describes herself as a hobby trainer who felt the ''need for speed" from a very young age when riding at the Riddells Creek Pony Club.

For the past 12 years she has dabbled with racehorses, mainly at picnic events.

She said at Riddell she found participating in pony club novelty events and showing horses was too slow, and in her teens she eventually graduated to mountain racing where horses had to be tough and fit.

"I just loved horses," McAdam said.

The lure of working with thoroughbreds enticed her to find work at thoroughbred racing and breeding establishments in the Macedon Ranges.

Riding trackwork, and doing all the things required of a stablehand, only reinforced her ambition to gain a restricted trainer's licence.

Initially she worked with Pat Carey at Huntly Lodge, and later spent time at Eliza Park and Macedon Lodge.

McAdam's father Bob Brown wasn't a keen horseman, but his 12-acre Riddell property was ideal for McAdam's gallopers.

"Dad was more interested in motorbikes, and he's bred donkeys."

WIN AT BALLARAT The Kyneton-listed owner-trainer was thrilled to win a Ballarat Synthetic Maiden over 1400m with her latest purchase, Drain The Swamp, earlier this month.

McAdam paid $8000 for the four-year-old early this year, liking some of the galloper's early form on synthetic tracks.

Having not raced for five months, Drain The Swamp has had four runs for McAdam, all on the synthetic track at Ballarat.

Two starts back, he led over 1400m and fought on well to run second, giving McAdam confidence for his next start - and this was vindicated.

From barrier 1, jockey Jason Maskiell went to the front and the $5.50 chance was always in control, striding clear to win impressively by four lengths.

McAdam had the temporary distraction of being called before the stewards to explain a clinical blood sample taken from the galloper the day before, in breach of strict time rules.

The explanation was accepted, and a $750 penalty imposed.

This was all forgotten after the win and $11,388 in prize money, and McAdam is now mapping out when Drain The Swamp will have his next start.

McAdam, whose husband Andrew is a Riddell bricklayer, fondly recalls her first winner - Bismuth - at the RACV Healesville Country Cup in 2009.

The Drouin Cup win with Paterangi in late 2018 was another of her 13 career wins.

Drain The Swamp and stablemate Marsoon are the only two horses McAdam has in work.

Revitalisation at Romsey Bill West Romsey Bowling Club is looking to make every post a winner in season 2020-2021, with the recent appointment of a first-ever club coach seen as a positive step forward.

Membership has increased into the mid-40s, and the club is seeking additional members, either experienced or new bowlers.

"We're really pleased that Garry Templar has joined our club as senior coach. He's a very experienced bowler with coaching credentials and will be able to guide our four members who recently completed the Bowls Victoria coaching course," club chairman John Beaumont said.

"Overall, our aim is to be more competitive."

The Redbacks intend to field five teams - three Saturday and two midweek in the Central Highlands pennant.

With Templar at the helm, and qualified coaches readily available, the club is looking to improve the standard of bowls played by its teams and members.

"There's a good, friendly atmosphere at

the club and locals across all age groups are encouraged to give bowls a go," CEOtreasurer Graeme Cuthbert said.

Saturday social bowls is already being played at Romsey, observing COVID-19 distancing regulations, with good attendances despite the cold conditions.

MAXIMISE POTENTIAL Garry Templar has a long-time sporting involvement and a very competitive outlook. Templar says he is "as keen as ever" both as a player and coach. He wants to see Romsey's bowlers become more consistent and achieve their full potential, while enjoying the sport as well.

It's something of a homecoming as Templar grew up in Romsey and played football and cricket with the local clubs, before going to Melbourne and pursuing business interests.

He's also coached Romsey football and cricket teams, and admits bowls wasn't a natural transition.

"A mate invited me along to bowls at Essendon, and I got hooked," he said.

He quickly adapted to the sport and has played for 20 years, the last 16 as skipper.

Photo courtesy Roger Kozulins Templar moved to live in Lancefield several years ago, and had a brief stint with the Tigers, before coaching and playing at Gladstone Park and then Craigieburn bowling clubs. He's also played for years in the strong RSL bowls competition at Glenroy, and in many tournaments.

"With less travelling I'll have more time to devote to bowls at Romsey, and everyone is hopeful the season can go ahead," he added.

The club's very popular AFL Grand Final Eve fours tournament is in doubt, due to the COVID-19 situation and uncertainty about the AFL Grand Final date.

Romsey will hold a midweek fours tournament on Thursday, February 11, sponsored by TJ Scott and Son, funeral directors of Kyneton and Gisborne.

Friday evening barefoot bowls will again be on the agenda early in the new year.

Having just her second race start, twoyear-old filly Seeress impressed with a fast-finishing victory at Ballarat Synthetic on Thursday.

Ridden by Lucinda Doodt, she was well back early in the Polystock Maiden Plate over 1000m, but came with a withering run down the centre of the track in the last 200m to beat Braddock by half a length.

Seeress, by Nostradamus from Elleandee, started and had run ninth on debut on April 4 at Geelong.

Given plenty of time to develop, the filly shone in a recent jump out at Tatura, and has obvious ability.

Osborne races the filly in partnership with Alex Babauskis and N Paltoglou.

OVERDUE VICTORY The previous day at Cranbourne it was five-year-old Salty Kisses who broke through for a well-deserved victory, following three successive third placings at Sandown.

"Definitely at the top of her game" is how Osborne described one of the most consistent gallopers in his stables.

Ridden by Michael Rodd, Salty Kisses settled mid-field and in the 1200m Benchmark 64 event for fillies and mares, and secured a run at the right time to save ground and surge clear to win comfortably.

Rodd, who rode Efficient to victory in the 2007 Melbourne Cup, has been riding in Singapore for some time but returned to Australia when the COVID-19 pandemic stopped racing there.

Osborne certainly had a couple of 'gun'

apprentices to put on his horses when he was training on the Gold Coast; in addition to Rodd there was Zac Purton, who has just won the Hong Kong jockeys' premiership for the fourth time.

Salty Kisses has now chalked up five wins from 28 starts, and numerous placings, for prizemoney of $115,125.

The mare's last win was on Kyneton Cup Day 2019.
