New off-lead dog park announced

Eve Lamb It's official - Castlemaine finally has a site for its first off-lead dog park.

After many years of speculation and multiple aborted suggestions for a suitable site, the new off-lead park site was announced on the spot late last week.

Covering 1700 square metres of leafy natural space, the site occupies the Castlemaine township edge of Wesley Hill Recreation Reserve area - near the lower stadium carpark off McGrath Street.

"It definitely goes back to when Jim Norris was mayor, probably about 15 years," Cr Dave Petrusma said of the ongoing efforts to settle on a workable spot for the park.

"At least five locations have been suggested over the years," Cr Petrusma said.

"You might say there's been a pause put on it."

"You might say it's been quite a tale," Cr Bronwen Machin added.

Amid the pooch-themed puns, Cr Petrusma's Newfoundland, Bogart, and Cr Machin's dog, Sunny, were busy evaluating the chosen site.

They seemed to approve.

WHO ARE WE?

With $60,000 carried forward for its creation in the council's '20-21 budget, the new off-lead facility will be fenced and gated.

Work is scheduled to start in coming weeks with the new park hoped to be ready for use by September.

On site for the announcement, mayor Cr Christine Henderson said creation of the park was acknowledged as being highly valuable for people as well as their dogs.

"It's at the top of our council plan, recognised as being significant for health and wellbeing, especially at the moment," Cr Henderson said.

"It's also a great way for newcomers to the community to meet established residents," said Cr Machin, anticipating many walks to the new park with Sunny leading the way.

Signage will be installed outlining rules and regulations for its use.

"Users will still have to pick up the poo," Cr Machin said.

"But there will be a dispenser and bins," Cr Petrusma said.

"It's just great to think it's actually happening after so long," Cr Henderson said.

Small grants awarded Macedon Ranges Council has awarded funds to three community groups under its Small Project Grants program.

‘Fix traffic’ cry for Riddell Residents call time for proper planning

Riddells Creek residents are urgently calling for a town traffic management as they brace for a population forecast of 6000 people.

Lyn Hovey, from community group Getting Riddell Right, said traffic was also a huge part of why so many objectors emerged to plans for a large supermarket development on the south side of Station Street.

"The fundamental issue to a lot of these developments is how people will get around because the town has grown," she said.

"There are a lot of traffic issues at the moment - already the town is comprised. As the population grows it's fundamental that elected representatives support the planning work that needs to be done rather than leaving it up to developers who might cut corners."

Some residents have suggested one-way streets to improve traffic flow and others a bypass of the town to protect it from becoming "just another indistinguishable Melbourne suburb".

Most agree any town traffic management and movement should extend into the next century.

Coles Woodend worker positive

A staff member at Woodend's Coles supermarket is self-isolating after testing positive for COVID-19 last week.

In a statement posted to the Coles website on Saturday night, the company said a number of team members who worked in close contact had also been asked to self-isolate and Coles would continue to work with the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services to finalise contact tracing.

'Coles' standard cleaning procedures comply with the federal government's COVID-19 Hygiene Practices For Supermarkets, and an additional deep clean of the store was arranged,' the statement read.

'Consistent with prior practice developed with the Victorian Department of Health, the store can continue to trade and the risk of transmission for customers and team members is very low.'

The infection ends almost two months of zero new active cases in the Macedon Ranges.

Resident George Wright urged planning for traffic to also consider bushfire risk to the town.

"Riddells Creek is very poorly provided with transport corridors to cope with bushfire emergencies and is very vulnerable," he said.

"I hope this is a spur for looking at a Riddells Creek township protection plan against bushfire as recommended for high risk areas in the Royal Commission into the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires."

Riddells Creek residents are seeking funds for a traffic plan from the 2020/21 Macedon Ranges Council budget and their submissions will be considered as part of the council's budget deliberations.

Mr Colliver said it was simple, "We're at a fork in the road for Riddells Creek: we either have a 4WD rodeo in the middle of town or we have a town centre where people can stop and talk to each other and stand in the sunshine and enjoy the place they live. It's as stark as that."

Traffic troubles are mounting in Riddells Creek and locals warn they must be tackled before development takes hold.

Residents are urgently calling for a town traffic management and movement plan as they brace for a population forecast of 6000 people, becoming a 'district town', by 2036.

Riddells Creek's Ross Colliver last week called on Macedon Ranges Council to begin vital planning now.

Concerns highlight Sutherland Street, bottle-necked traffic on Main Road, and Station Street, which is congested with peak supermarket and railway station traffic.

"As you get to Station Street you're on your own as a pedestrian and you're on your own as a person parking - it's precarious," Mr Colliver said.

"Issues now centre on the parking and movement immediately adjacent to the existing supermarket where there's a conflict between that movement and cars going to and from the railway station."

"This is a hot issue in town. The town's growing rapidly and unless we plan to manage the traffic in this space we're going to have a difficult time."

Residents are seeking a plan that considers traffic movement as well as cyclists, pedestrians, all-ability access, commercial delivery vehicles and other uses in the heart of the town - resident geese included.

Traffic and transport emerged as one of three priority issues raised during public submissions to a controversial 1290-lot development on 130 hectares at Amess Road last year.

Mount Macedon's Stanley Park needs urgent upgrades to reserve signage to protect its unique flora and fauna as visitors grow, its committee of management says.

President Sally Joyce has urged Macedon Ranges Council to review and update all regulatory, advisory and interpretive signs to encourage respect for the natural jewel.

"Visitor numbers to the reserve appear to be increasing and their impact upon the significant flora and fauna is of enormous concern," she said.

"We regularly see dogs off leads, dog faeces, visitors bringing in gas barbecues and lighting fires. Without signage to alert people of appropriate behav-

iours and an appreciation of the significant native flora and fauna the reserve will lose much of the uniqueness that it represents today."

Ms Joyce said the existing 14 signs at the reserve were small and ineffective across its six entrances and 800 metres of unchecked access.

She said signage was often not visible or seen when the public entered, so size and careful consideration of placement was a must.

The committee of management has worked over the past 20 years to restore environmental values at the reserve, discovering rich indigenous flora and documenting numerous species previously unknown to inhabit the

reserve. Ms Joyce's submission for funding in Macedon Ranges Council's 2020/21 budget will be considered alongside another bid to help protect the park.

Macedon's Helen Kalajdzic sought funds in the budget to install picnic tables and barbecue facilities at Tony Clarke Recreation Reserve to improve visitor experience and take pressure off Stanley Park.

Ms Kalajdzic said Tony Clarke Reserve was well placed to become a visitor destination given its current usage and existing facilities including toilets and playground.

The submissions will be considered as part of the council's budget process.

Off-lead dog park

Works will soon start on a fully fenced off-leash dog park at Wesley Hill Recreation Reserve in Castlemaine. The dog park will be located at the northern corner of the reserve, next to the lower carpark off McGrath Street. The dog park will provide residents with an enclosed area to exercise and socialise their dogs. It will include a drinking fountain, gated entry points, seating, a doggie bag dispenser and bin. The park is expected to open in September.

Amy Hume Macedon locals are fighting to keep momentum for a much-anticipated community hub as they face a cost blowout for the project.

Volunteers are seeking $90,000 in Macedon Ranges Council's 2020/21 budget to meet the funding shortfall for the building contract and continue efforts.

Macedon's Samara Hodson said the community had rallied behind the project and would be disappointed and frustrated if it came to an end.

"There's been so much momentum and publicity behind this enthusiasm gathered for this house. If the momentum stops people will think this is just not ever going to happen," Ms Hodson said.

treasured former maternal and child health care centre from council sale last year.

The 1940s weatherboard at 47 Victoria Street survived Ash Wednesday but has sat unused since December 2016. Last year the council took a chance on a community plan to breathe new life into the building.

The town lacked a community hub that could facilitate a range of activities such as a community garden and kitchen, workshops, providing meeting spaces and hosting events.

The council allocated $186,000 in last year's budget towards its overhaul with the community to fundraise $30,000 and find in-kind support totalling $43,500 towards the works.

A committee formed and raised $13,600 from 66 donors through an online campaign that was bolstered by a donation from the founding friends, bringing

the total raised to $31,797.

Macedon's Samara Hodson said the community had well and truly fulfilled its end of the agreement and it would be disappointing to have to return the community funds.

She said volunteers had committed countless hours to the project in anticipation that the doors to the community house may open in 2020.

"There has been a groundswell of support. Project donors have been anticipating refurbishments to commence before the end of the financial year and a prospective lease to be taken up later in 2020," Ms Hodson said.

"If this project does not progress the community would be justified in feeling disappointed."

Macedon Ranges Council continues to deliberate its 2020/21 budget.

Council’s draft Public Transparency Policy is a new requirement of the Local Government Act 2020 aimed at guiding the way information is made publicly available.

A resident of Bacchus Marsh said she had to take her daughter to the dentist in Sunbury last Thursday and took her usual route to get there via Diggers Rest/Coimadai Road.

"I found it interesting that this was police free on my way there and back," she said. "It's a simple way from the metro suburbs to the region."

A resident of Mitchell Shire who works in the Macedon Ranges said she was surprised to travel to and from work daily without being questioned.

"I expected to encounter a police check at some point on my drive and was prepared with a letter from my employer, but I wasn't stopped in either direction at any point last week," she said.

A delivery van driver coming back from Melbourne to Kyneton said he simply left the Calder Freeway before the Gisborne

Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol officer Brett Magrath said police simply didn't have the resources to have checkpoints on every road.

"If people want to go around anything they will, but it's just putting the community at risk," Leading Senior Constable Magrath said.

"Where the high volumes (of traffic) are we'll do checkpoints, and roving patrols will undertake number plate scanning.

"If you come up here and can't justify it by meeting the (stage 3 restriction) criteria, you are going to get a $1600 fine for every person in the car.

"There won't be any discretion."

Under stage 3 'stay at home' restrictions, residents of metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire are only able to leave their homes for four reasons - shopping for food and essential items; care and caregiving; daily exercise; and work and study, if they can't do it from home.

Vehicle checkpoints in place across nine major arterial roads will be operational 24 hours a day and will remain in place for the coming weeks.

Police will be intercepting vehicles at random to ensure they are complying with the stage 3 restrictions.

The C-DOC team is thrilled to announce that limited ticketing is now available for the screening of its three scheduled films at Castlemaine's Theatre Royal.

Those lucky enough to secure one of the 40 tickets for each show will have the opportunity to enjoy and participate in the live Q&A panels after each screening - a key element of the much-loved festival that is now in its sixth year.

This panel will include director and videographer Mark Hanlin in conversation with local environmentalist Natalie Moxham and ecologist Professor Brendan Wintle.

The show must go on Eve Lamb Virus or no virus, come March next year the Castlemaine State Festival will happen, its director says.

Exactly what form it takes will be guided by the level of restriction in place at the time, but festival director Glyn Roberts says planning for the March 19-28 festival is factoring in adaptation to the shifting COVID-19 landscape.

"The short answer is yes," he says as the festival announces a suite of $15,000 in new grants for local creatives to produce work for potential inclusion.

The We Are Here COVID-19 artist relief grants have opened and eligible artists now have until July 22 to apply with successful projects announced mid-August.

"The message would be get in quick. They've already started coming in," the festival director says.

"We are planning on presenting a festival in late March 2021 and we're currently looking at all scenarios and formats that are safe and possible.

"It's our hope and desire no matter what happens that over that period in late March we can allow the town and the region to feel like something of the festival is possible, even if we are plunged into full lockdown, and give people a bit of beauty and wonder and inspiration."

Bureau of Communications and Arts Research analysis shows cultural and creative activity is worth around $111 Billion to Australia's economy annually.

The Castlemaine State Festival injects a significant sum both directly and indirectly into the local economy "The direct economic impact is close to $4 million every festival and the indirect ripple effect is somewhere around $60 million. That's per festival," Glyn says.

"It has a huge ripple effect."

As the arts as a whole grapples with the Covid-19 damage, Glyn views the natural creativity of the sector as a significant asset.

"We're hoping to be led by the ingenuity of artists," he says.

"We want to at least have a modicum of projects that can respond to even the darkest and most restrictive of times."

Farmers win in land battle Amy Hume

A fourth generation Springfield farming family has taken on the state government in a David and Goliath battle over land, and won.

Backed by Macedon Ranges Shire Council, the Clement family succeeded at VCAT in preventing fragmentation of farmland at 75 Clements Road, Springfield.

The family donated the land as a pine plantation to support the local school some 80 years ago, which became superfluous to needs when the school closed in the early 1960s.

Sale of the land was expected, but the Clement family did not anticipate the Department of Treasury and Finance's bid for a permit to build there.

The department claimed the land had limited capacity for productive value despite evidence of the Clement family stock still using the unfenced property.

The council raised alarm: it was "clear the permit application seeks to raise the value of the land".

The land measures 4048sqm in the Farm Zone and granting a permit goes against the state's own policy to prevent fragmentation of farmland.

Building in the Farm Zone on less than 40ha is discouraged without evidence of a legitimate farming pursuit that requires a house to support the activity.

"There's the moral argument from our family point of view but there's also the zoning regulations," James Clement said.

"VCAT upheld the law - and we were fighting for the law to be upheld too. What happens with this property now, we don't know."

Springfield farmers Leslie Grahovac, John Clement, Peter Scanlon and James Clement fought to save land from fragmentation and won at VCAT. the edge of a larger property and less attractive for resale due to its shape. He said the department approached him to discuss the land privately 12 months ago.

Now that both parcels have proven commercially unviable, the two families that remain farming in the area seek to buy back the land that was once theirs.

"It should be sold back to us for the same nominal value as they got in the first place. There would have been a peppercorn payment but there's no record of it," Mr Scanlon said.

Abutting property neighbours Alex and Leslie Grahovac said the attempted

VCAT senior member Margaret Baird said the property was "not a location where hobby farming is directed."

"The loss of productive agricultural land, even by small increments, together with the introduction of rural living properties, undermines outcomes being pursued by the scheme and set up the potential for conflict," she said.

The gifted Clement land is not the only parcel of its kind in the area. Neighbour Peter Scanlon's family also donated one acre of land for similar use by the school, on an adjacent block.

"This is a government agency and the intention was not to give it to the benefit of the state government, it was to give it to this school and the Springfield farming community," Ms Grahovac said.

"It would have set a horrendous precedence - not just in our immediate area but across other Farm Zones in the Macedon Ranges and beyond."

At least two other neighbours had disclosed interest in selling off small parcels of land if the permit at the old school pine plantation site had been granted.

A small house fire in Kyneton on Saturday serves as a timely reminder that winter can be the forgotten fire season, local brigades warn.

CFA crews from Kyneton, Carlsruhe and Tylden were called to the Donnithorne Street address to find smoke visible from the street, after embers from an open fireplace ignited soft furnishings.

Incident controller Rohan Taylor said quick intervention by the occupants and quick response by the local brigades confined the fire to the room of origin with very minimal extension.

"The incident was listed as under control shortly after," Mr Taylor said.

Crews combed the property for further hotspots with a thermal imaging camera and gas detector following containment of the fire.

Across the state, there were about 15 per cent more preventable house fires last winter compared to the other seasons, with fire services responding to 890 preventable house fires.

Kyneton CFA captain Josh Gamble said fires could happen any time, but the personal risk was greatest at night when we were asleep.

"When we sleep we can lose our sense of smell," Capt Gamble said.

"Luckily on this occasion the occupants

were home and were alerted to the fire.

"Many residential fires that result in fatalities or serious injuries start in sleeping and living areas.

"That's why it's critical to have a working smoke alarm in your home."

Capt Gamble recommends residents check their smoke alarm batteries annually and if the alarm is 10 years or older the whole unit should be changed, ideally to a photo-electric smoke alarm powered by a 10-year lithium battery.

"When installed and maintained correctly these smoke alarms detect smoke the quickest, alerting you earlier and giving you more time to evacuate to safety," he said.

Romsey re-subdivision refused Macedon Ranges Council has knocked back a bid to re-subdivide two lots into 15 at Barry Street, Romsey, in a split 5-4 vote.

Planning officers had flagged concern over traffic movement, tree removal and inconsistencies with planning policy and 2012 Romsey character study.

Also at the centre of debate was the proposal's average lot size of 928 square metres, seen as undersized for the area, with 13 out of 15 lots of an area of less than 1000sqm.

The application received six objections on similar grounds. Councillors weighed up the concerns against the need for diverse development and its location, 700m west

of the town centre.

Against planning officer advice, Cr Bill West pushed for the development's approval and was backed by Crs Henry Bleeck, Mandi Mees and Andrew Twaits.

Cr West argued similar lots had already been approved in areas the same distance from the township and this land was a certain inclusion in the town boundary, being surrounded by other developed blocks.

"Part of the recommendation for refusal is based on plans drawn up in 2012. Much has changed in Romsey since that time and the proposed development is planned to meet a particular demand," Cr West said.

"Romsey has grown quickly in recent years and I feel approval for this subdivision would be a positive move at this stage in the town's development. It's a good use of the site."

Cr Mees supported the move, saying it was a chance to provide housing diversity and affordability, but not all agreed.

Cr Natasha Gayfer said she understood Romsey was growing and the need for infill development, but that it should comply with the planning scheme and respect neighbourhood character.

"My main concern is the undersized lots, which are inconsistent with surrounding areas. There is an expectation in this

area for larger lots as it is part of the rural interface. The proposal fails to respect the neighbourhood character," she said.

This was backed by Cr Jennifer Anderson who had a "sense of unease" about the next steps and how council would control the built form.

"As soon as you've done the subdivision you don't know what is going to occur on the lot and my concern is that you will end up with housing that isn't in keeping with the residential area," she said.

Councillors voted 5-4 to refuse the application.

The applicant has a right to appeal the decision at VCAT.

The Digital Connection Project for Seniors has received an impressive 25 enquiries from people ranging from 65 to 98 years of age wanting to increase their digital literacy.

In response to COVID-19 restrictions, the project aims to support people over 65 in the Macedon Ranges to socially connect with family and friends using internetenabled digital technologies.

Those enquiring have had a broad range of needs, from having no previous experience using a device to others needing support to move their business online, search for employment, contact family and friends over platforms such as Zoom or to complete a carers course to care for partners at home.

Volunteer project worker Andrea Darcy said that before the pandemic, most of the people she had assisted had some opportunities for social connection that weren't possible now.

"Many expressed a degree of loneliness and social disconnection because of COVID - usual community activities not running, children at a distance etc.," she said.

"Overwhelmingly all were up for a chat and wanted to share their challenges and frustrations during this time."

The Australian Digital Inclusion Index shows a digital divide, where older people are falling behind younger people in their capacity to access and make use of the internet.

People aged 65 and over are among the least digitally included groups in Australia, particularly if they are women, on lower incomes or not living in a major city.

Gisborne Oaks resident Betty Smith is a perfect example of someone who has managed to remain connected over the last few months.

With phone calls, texting, emails and social media apps, she is in regular contact with family and friends, including a granddaughter in Canada.

Betty is also an avid watcher of YouTube, listens to ABC radio, plays solitaire and loves to Google things. Thanks to her tablet and smart phone she is in touch with the world.

Ten local creative projects will receive $1000 each in funding support from Mount Alexander Shire Council's rapid-response Get Lost Quick grants program.

Many of the funded projects will reveal and celebrate past and emerging stories from Jaara country, including Lisa D'Onofrio's research to celebrate historical and contemporary local women; Jan Wositzky's reignited 'Storyteller's Guide to the Goldfields'; Wide Open Road Art's 'Connects' cultivating our sense of home; and Martin Lee and Wally Gunn's sound installation at the Castlemaine Railway Station amplifying our untold travel stories.

Shedshaker Brewery's 'Love Your Local' performances and The Village Festival's 'Drive-in Fire Show' will engage a large number of local creatives and help the wider community to come together safely.

Capacity building across sectors is also a key focus of the program, with Castlemaine Hot Rod Centre's 'The Art of Pinstriping' reviving a renowned Castlemaine trade; Kate Gamble's 'Re-thinking the Streets' creatively tackling social distancing needs; Sach Motee's 'Castlemaine Electronic Workshop' building professional development pathways for the electronic music sector; and Punctum Inc's 'the Way - the Water - the Walk' in partnership with Castlemaine Art Museum and Castlemaine

Sam Thomas said the diverse and accessible program of creative projects was breaking new ground.

"It demonstrates our capacity as a community to act beyond our individual needs and embrace the power of the collective," Mr Thomas said.

"During this exceptional time it is important that we focus on our shared experience, on what brings us together.

"The creative arts are a great vehicle for us to reimagine our surroundings, and the sense of anticipation of what is possible is energising," he said.

Creative people are encouraged to keep providing information through the Get Lost platform, to continue to build a picture of cultural activities and services being developed across the shire.

Council and the Get Lost community working group will continue to work with all Get Lost Quick grant applicants and other local creatives to help enable the important collective cultural work underway under COVID-19.

If you have a great idea for a community project, or have had to put an initiative on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you can now apply for a Mount Alexander Shire Council Community Grant.

The grant program provides financial assistance to new and emerging communitybased projects and initiatives that align with council's goals and priorities.

Funding from this round is also available for programs and projects impacted by COVID-19, including operational costs to adapt and/or restart existing initiatives.

Council's inclusive communities coordinator Sharna Cropley said operational costs associated with everyday business were not usually funded through this program, but council understood the hardship that many groups and individuals faced at the moment in carrying out their work.

"There are so many important projects underway in our community and we encourage groups to apply for a grant if they need help to recover or adapt for these projects to continue," Ms Cropley said.

"The grants program will help groups to continue to deliver projects that offer connectedness, growth and support to our community."

The application process for this round of grants will also see the introduction of questions relating to gender and climate change, with applicants asked to consider the needs, impacts and outcomes of their work on people of different genders and the environment.

These additional considerations reflect the recent passing of the Victorian Gender Equality Act 2020 and council's Climate Change Declaration last year.

Funding rounds are available for small grants up to $3000 and partnership grants up to $10,000. Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, the usual information sessions will not be held for this round, however council officers will be available by phone or email to answer grant-related queries and to discuss project ideas.

Applications open next Monday July 20 and close at 4pm on Monday August 10.

Maybe, just maybe, "Victoria has some of the best firefighters in the world..."

BECAUSE they have had the stability and confidence in the systems and structures that have not changed since the 1950s.

If it's not cracked don't fix it etc.

Another light bulb moment by Mount Alexander Shire.

I'm talking about the footpath extension on Wheeler Street. Where else in Castlemaine do you see a footpath extend directly next to live traffic? Wheeler Street has a 50 km/h speed limit and is also an O.D. truck route. No barrier between pedestrians and live traffic.

Council could have a pre-fabricated clear span walkway behind the current guardrail to tie into the existing footpath, if they had some 'on the ground' experience to bounce off.

The day will come when someone is injured (or worse), by accidentally walking into live traffic on this waste of ratepayers' money debacle.

A clean energy future We read many letters advocating nuclear fuel reactors as a solution to global warming from time to time ('Australia's energy future?', Opinions, July 7), but none can provide solid evidence that they should be developed in preference to currently available renewable energy sources.

All types of nuclear reactors are extremely expensive to construct, are yet to be a proven and safe source of reliable energy, produce dangerous radioactive uranium isotopes which remain health risks for thousands of years, and involve costly and continual deactivation and containment of the contaminant products generated during operation. These disadvantages also apply to thorium reactors.

While they do indeed produce less radioactive material, and thorium is abundant, the above disadvantages, and the enormous development and reprocessing costs makes this alternative redundant at the first hurdle.

In addition, the reprocessing cycle still produces radioactive material capable of producing nuclear bombs.

Why would a country like Australia waste billions of dollars in developing this technology when wind, solar, pumped hydro and newly emerging storage technologies such as lithium batteries, hydrogen, ammonia, and hot water heat banks can supply our electricity at a fraction of the cost?

I blame activism for these letters, and haven't met an advocate of nuclear energy yet who knows what they are talking about.

Desperately needed Jill Loorham, Castlemaine It's high time ordinary people (and that means you, if you're bothering to read this) start clambering for real change.

One of the most important changes would be banning - at government level - gold and mineral mining in Australian forests and farming districts, where our own beautiful and fragile landscape and valuable food production will be compromised or lost.

Bucket loads of tears currently will not stop this happening. The 150-year-old goldfields in which we live show demonstrably and dreadfully the consequences of prior mining times.Nowadays, there are all sorts of arguments put forward by miners that result in a continuance of government licences being issued, when it's obvious to everyone, except the braindead, that mining should be forbidden, forever, or at least, for as long as humans are on earth... and that won't be long if our forests and farmlands and compromised.

What will be left if government licences to mine continue to be granted? The answer is clear: ruined, degraded environs.

What is desperately needed now is new

environmentally concerned representative parliamentarians participating in all levels of government.

Roll up - and sign up - please, if you care about the future.

Where is the benefit?

Rob Chapman, Redesdale Gold mining is not an essential industry in this state, and should not be at the expense of the environment.

Soil and water resources should be protected for the sustainable industries of agriculture and horticulture.

Mining is about exploiting a finite resource, when it is gone you are left with the site to remediate.

It makes sense not to damage the environment for the short-term sugar hit that gold provides compared to other primary industries.What are the real benefits to the state of Victoria? There are no royalties on gold here, there is no value adding.

The gold that is produced at Fosterville is taken out of the country and that is that.

We cannot even buy gold that Fosterville Gold produces - no bullion, no specimens, no local jewellery made of it.

Bendigo could have been to gold what Antwerp in Holland is to diamonds. Historically the state has lost out big time on a lucrative tourism opportunity that would have attracted international tourists. Gold is still sought in large quantity by Asiatic peoples, and specimens are sought by collectors worldwide. This process diminishes the possibilities for our talented young artisans and technicians to produce truly characteristic Australian jewellery and intelligent special innovative products.With all the possibilities that our state could have capitalised upon, we would still wind up with tainted land, and more wretched holes in the ground.

Where is the real long-term benefit? We have so little that is good to show for all the gold that been mined already. The benefits of this former commodity must be weighed against the negative effects of its production and taxed accordingly for the land's remediation otherwise the cost to real benefit has indicated it is not worth it.

An opportunity to learn nordic pole walking in Castlemaine will teach participants how to turn a walk into a workout.

Nordic pole walking activates 90 per cent of the muscles in the body, which can result in toned upper arms, shoulders and back muscles. It has a greater aerobic effect than regular walking with reduced strain on the lower body.

Sally Melville is a nordic pole walking participant and volunteer who has seen great personal benefits from this type of exercise.

"When I started nordic pole walking, I suffered from chronic sciatica and it was a manageable exercise for me to do while in pain. I believe the nordic pole walking played a part in my rehabilitation," Sally said.

Weekly morning introduction groups will begin in Castlemaine on Tuesday July 28. The one-and-a-half hour sessions start at 9.30am and include a 15-minute warm up, a one-hour walk and will end with a 15-minute cooldown.

This project is a CHIRP Community Health and Castlemaine Community House partnership funded by Musculoskeletal Australia.

New top job A former Macedon Ranges Shire Council economic development and tourism director has been appointed chief executive officer of the neighbouring Mitchell Shire.

Brett Luxford takes up his new appointment on August 24, having spent almost five years in a very senior role with the City of Geelong.

Ag supply chain traceability boost Australia’s status as one of the world’s most trusted sources of clean, green and safe produce will be enhanced even further through a $4 million agricultural supply chain traceability boost.

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said 16 projects are sharing in the funding under the first round of the Australian Government’s $7 million traceability grants program.

“Modern, accurate, and timely traceability systems help provide even stronger assurances to our trading partners and consumers about the safety and quality of our fantastic produce,” Minister Littleproud said.

access to information about those animals to those along the chain who require it.

“The funding will support the development of a digital farming platform to trace Indigenous foods throughout the supply chain to assist with provenance and indigenous culture claims.

“Another project involves the trial of technology to trace fresh produce through export supply chains, with the melon industry used as a pilot.

“We are also investing in work that will strengthen traceability in the Australian egg industry through the provision of software tools and training.

“Effective traceability systems are critical for growth in our access to export markets.

“It’s important we respond to demand from consumers domestically and internationally for greater transparency and real time convenience around the origins and safety of agricultural products in modern digital marketplaces.”

The Traceability Grants Program is part of the Modernising Agricultural Trade agenda announced by the Australian Government to support the target of a $100 billion agricultural sector by 2030. The $7 million program will run over a minimum of two rounds from now until June 2023.

“Full records of any pain relief products used must be kept,” she said.

“Details should include the product trade name, species/location of animals, identification numbers/description, the date the treatment has been applied and the dose rate used.”

More information about farm chemical record keeping requirements can be found by searching the Agriculture Victoria website.

Dr Holmes said Victoria’s Code of Accepted Farming Practice for the Welfare of Sheep (revision number two) was also available to provide a technical guide for those using mulesing as part of a flystrike management program.

“If undertaken, mulesing should only be done as part of an integrated approach to flystrike management including crutching and shearing, good worm control, strategic use of chemicals, genetic selection of sheep and paddock grazing management,” she said.

Victorian producers are now required to administer a registered pain-relieving product if mulesing sheep.

The new provisions, which came into effect from July 1, have been introduced as part of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Regulations 2019.

The new requirement will ensure better animal welfare outcomes for Victorian sheep and will enhance the reputation of Victoria’s sheep industry.

Agriculture Victoria Program Manager Livestock Welfare Compliance, Rachael Holmes said only pain relief products that are registered for use on sheep by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority can be used when mulesing.

“Sheep producers are encouraged to seek advice from a veterinarian or animal health consultant regarding available treatment options for their own situation,” she said.

From July 1, infringement notices and fines have been able to be issued to anyone mulesing a sheep without providing pain relief.

Dr Holmes said as with any agricultural or veterinary chemicals used on farm, producers should keep records of the pain-relieving

Quad bike OPDs save lives In 2019, the federal government adopted a recommendation of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to mandate a new safety standard which includes the fitting of OPDs to all new quad new bikes within two years.

This standard was based on the best available science, medical advice and the considered recommendations of the ACCC and was backed by the National Farmers Federation, Australian Medical Association, Royal College of Surgeons, Rural Doctors Association of Australia, Royal Flying Doctor Service, National Rural Health Alliance, National Rural Women’s Coalition, Country Women’s Association of Australia, and the Australian Workers Union among others.

“Fitting an OPD to a bike is not worth dying in a ditch over - literally - because that’s exactly what has happened to too many Australians riding quads,” Dr Hall said.

“No injury or fatality has ever been attributed to an OPD , and of all the fatalities that have occurred on quad bikes over the past 20 years, which is 267, only one of these had an OPD fitted.

“There are six visits to an emergency department every day due to quad bike accidents.

“These are dangerous vehicles. Making them more safe is a no-brainer.”

Keep kids safe on farms visitors to the farm, but for quad bikes, around 50 per cent are visitors.

Drowning accounts for around 35-40 per cent on child farm deaths, with farm dams being by far the most common site.

There has been an improvement in the reduction of toddler drowning on farms in recent years - particularly a reduction of drowning in dams, which have halved since the 1990s. However, drowning is still the number one cause of child farm fatality in Australia.

A common scenario is that a toddler wanders away from the home un-noticed into farm water bodies or toward other farm hazards (vehicles, mobile machinery). Apart from dams, children can find their way into creeks, troughs, dips and irrigation channels. Children under five years of age are at greatest risk.

Around 20 children under 15 years are fatally injured on an Australian farm every year and many more are hospitalised or treated by General Practitioners across rural Australia. The major causes of child deaths and injuries on farms are dams, farm vehicles, machinery, motorcycles and horses.

Age and development characteristics also place children at greater risk.

A study of on-farm fatalities for a three year period by the Australian Centre for Agricultural Health and Safety found that children (0-14years) make up 15-20 per cent of farm injury deaths, around 66 per cent are male.

Rural doctors care about farm accidents and deaths, according to their statement about quad bike safety.

Dr John Hall, president of the Rural Doctors Association of Australia, said that fitting Operator Protection Devices will save lives, and governments must hold the line on the new safety standards.

“OPDs absolutely save lives, and any debate around this issue is completely crazy,” Dr Hall said.

“Anyone who lives in the bush knows somebody that has either been injured, killed or had a near miss on a quad bike.

“They are incredibly useful on the farm, but also so, so dangerous.

“Just because there are some manufacturers having a tantrum because we don’t want Australians to die on their bikes, is no reason to compromise on the new requirements.

“Farming is a risky enough occupation as it is, and the idea that making one of the most commonly used farm vehicles, that are well known to be dangerous, more safe is a bad idea? Well it’s patently ridiculous ,” Dr Hall said.

“As doctors we see not only the tragic consequences for the people that are severely injured or killed, but also for their family, their friends and their community.”

With so many of Gisborne Peak Winery’s customers usually coming from the greater Melbourne area and with the latest lockdowns, winery director Barbara Nixon said they needed to think, again, what could they offer to keep business coming in the doors?

“We want to keep our staff employed and we want to offer local customers something that we haven’t ever offered before - dinner!

People have been asking for years if we are open for dinner and now we are, but on Friday and Saturday nights only,” Barbara said.

“Last weekend I tried to book a dinner for Bob and I in Gisborne and I couldn’t get in anywhere as there is such limited seating due to social distancing rules limiting venues to 20 people. So we are just adding capacity for dinner so the locals have more choice of places to go.”

Gisborne Peak Winery is inviting dinner guests to come early, if they can, and enjoy the winery’s social hour.

Drinks will be offered in the marquee that has been set out in a lounge style where dinner guests can have a pre-dinner drink and some nibbles before going into the Fireside Room for dinner.

Beer tax hit brewing It has been confirmed that from August 3 pubs and their patrons across the country will pay even more tax to have a beer.

“As the hospitality industry battles with the devastating economic impacts of COVID-19 this latest increase in tax comes at a time when publicans and patrons can least afford it,” Brewers Association of Australia CEO Brett Heffernan said.

“We appreciate politicians of every persuasion are urging people to get down to their local for a beer to support local jobs. However, the taxman will be there, from August 3, imposing the biggest beer tax ever.

“The Federal Government has the opportunity to stop the increase as the hospitality sector recovers from COVID-19. We seek its support to do so.

“At $2.26 per litre, Aussies already pay the fourth highest beer tax in the industrialised world. They then pay another 10 per cent GST on top. A substantial 42 per cent of the price of an Aussie-made stubby is tax.

A typical carton of 4.9 per cent alcohol beer retails for $52 - of that, $22.05 is tax. Australian drinkers are essentially shouting the taxman 10 of their 24 stubbies.

“Tax is the most expensive ingredient in Aussie beer. It’s not the inputs, production, freight, packaging, advertising or retail overheads and profits... it’s Australian Government tax.”

Ferguson says this is the wrong time for a tax hit as pubs strive to re-open and reemploy the almost 500,000 jobs lost across the hospitality sector.

“This hidden tax creeps up,” he said. “People are bemused to learn how much tax is in a beer and that it has automatically gone up every six months for the last 37 years. This year, it’s the last thing struggling pubs and their patrons need.

“Workers across the country are doing it tough this year with drought, bushfires and now ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and tourism bans. Loading more tax on a drink doesn’t help anyone.”

The Hoteliers and Brewers stress that freezing the CPI increases on beer and spirits for a year is revenue neutral for the government, but would be much-needed relief to consumers and publicans.

“Increasing the tax only makes life harder for everyone, while a freeze would see the government continue to collect the same rate of tax on beer and spirits as it does today.” Mr Ferguson said.

Mr Heffernan added: “Germany has deferred its beer tax from $0.13 (AUD) to zero in response to COVID. The Brits froze their beer tax at $1.52 (AUD). There is no logical reason for Aussies to be paying even more for a beer as we all try to emerge from this crisis, especially when so many are doing it tough.”

Company banned for misleading the ATO Following a six-month investigation, the Tax Practitioners Board terminated the registration of Victorian based, The Associates Vic Pty Ltd trading as Brown Baldwin and Associates and imposed the maximum five-year ban.

During the investigation the TPB found that BBA: * Maintained two sets of financial accounts, one set for bank purposes and another for taxation purposes. This had led to misleading information being given to the Commissioner of Taxation and credit/finance companies * Failed to meet its outstanding taxation obligations on several occasions * Did not supervise its staff sufficiently to ensure that they were acting competently * Assisted some of its clients to set up companies for the purpose of avoiding payment of debts and tax.

Additionally, the TPB found that BBA’s directors, Andrew Locantro, Biren Shah and Rajinder Narula were responsible for the misconduct of BBA and had provided misleading information to the TPB. Speaking about the case, Chair of the TPB, Mr Ian Klug AM observed, “Brown

Baldwin and Associates have consistently and flagrantly ignored the standards required to be a tax practitioner.

“As a result of our investigation we concluded that the public could have no confidence that either the company or its directors will perform the functions of a registered tax agent either competently or with integrity.”

Mr Klug said, “Where tax practitioners deliberately choose to jeopardise the high levels of trust that the community, and the law, expects of the industry, we will act with the harshest possible penalties.”

The public are encouraged to make a complaint to the TPB if they feel a registered tax practitioner is not providing services to an appropriate standard.

You can’t just claim $300 or $299 if you had no expenses “We often see people claiming a deduction despite not purchasing anything. When we question them, we often find it’s because they thought everyone is entitled to claim $300.

“While you don’t need receipts for claims of expenses up to $300 but you must have actually spent the money and be able to show us how you worked out your claim.”

Work-related expenses need to be work related Each year we see people trying to claim personal expenses under the guise of workrelated expenses, but you can only claim for expenses that are directly related to earning your income.

“We have been reminding taxpayers recently that if they are in jobs that require physical contact or close proximity to customers and they had to buy their own hand sanitiser, gloves or masks for use at work, that they can claim these items,” Ms Foat said.

“However, people who aren’t in jobs that aren’t in close proximity to the public or people who have purchased these items for their general use, cannot claim these items.

“For example, people who are working from home can’t claim these items and so a high work from home claim together with a large claim for protective items may trigger a red flag and slow down your return.

“People also cannot claim for the costs of setting their children up for home schooling.

These costs are private expenses.”

Lodging earlier doesn’t always mean getting your refund earlier Each year the ATO automatically includes information from employers, banks, private health insurers (and this year JobKeeper for employees and JobSeeker amounts) in people’s returns. For most people this information is ready by the end of July.

At a time when many people want the tax refund that they are expecting to arrive quickly, the Australian Taxation Office is warning people not to get tripped up by tax time myths that slow down returns.

“Every year we see people tripped up by tax time myths. Unfortunately, this often results in slowing their return down when either they or we realise their mistake as the return is processed,” assistant commissioner Karen Foat said.

“Where it doesn’t delay the initial return, it can result in a surprise tax bill later on.

“There are always a range of myths that need busting around Tax Time and the changed circumstances this year have seen some new additions to the list,” Ms Foat said.

“Our main priority is to help people get the facts straight before they lodge so that it’s a smooth, easy and fast process.”

Last year, nearly 500,000 individual tax returns were amended, with some taxpayers even amending their own returns before they were processed, which actually slows down the processing of their return.

Usually, tax returns lodged electronically are processed in less than two weeks.

Taxpayers can check the progress of their return by logging on to myGov and clicking through to the ATO. You can check the status of your return under ‘Manage Tax Returns’.

Top tax time myths for 2020 Bank details don’t update themselves While we receive information from banks, this doesn’t extend to updating details for the bank account you nominate to have your refund deposited into. Last year many people in their rush to lodge early forgot to update bank details and delayed their refund.

It’s not okay to double dip “We are concerned that some taxpayers may either accidentally or deliberately double dip by claiming their working from home expenses using the all-inclusive shortcut method while also claiming for specific items such as laptops or desks,” Ms Foat said. “It’s important to remember that if you’re claiming under the shortcut method, you cannot claim a separate additional deduction for any expenses you incur as a result of working from home.”

Photo: Gen Kay Lisa Dennis Connecting Country has been successful in round three of the Smart Farms Small Grants program and will receive $49,623 to develop a targeted Healthy Landscapes guide and on-farm workshops.

The guide and workshops aim to provide local farmers and other land managers with practical tools to better understand their land and make informed management decisions for long-term sustainability.

Bendigo Federal MP Lisa Chesters congratulated the team from Connecting Country on their grant win.

“I know from working with the local community the appreciation people have for Connecting Country. The work that is being done on farms, or on old farmlands, is a model for the rest of the country,” Ms Chesters said.

“I look forward to hearing more about the Healthy Landscapes guide and on-farm workshops.”

Connecting Country engagement coordinator Ivan Carter said they are delighted to receive the funding.

The project is set to get underway shortly.

“Our project, Healthy Landscapes, is made up of two components. A Healthy Landscapes booklet - 50 pages plus - and a series of workshops for local landowners,” Mr Carter said.

The development of the Healthy Landscapes guide is anticipated to begin in August and culminate around April 2021.

The guide is expected to include topics such as: - Reading your landscape: Assessing a property to identify natural assets (e.g. remnant vegetation and large old trees), threats

(e.g. weeds, overgrazing, erosion), the need for shade and shelter for stock.

- Planning your property: Whole-farm planning tailored to farmer needs and aspirations, to protect and enhance natural assets, increase farm productivity, reduce threats and build farm resilience.

- Managing soil and water: Identifying soil types, managing soil erosion, building soil carbon, managing farm dams as habitat, fencing waterways and off-stream watering to improve water quality.

- Promoting biodiversity: Fencing remnant vegetation, grazing exclusion, revegetation techniques, selecting revegetation areas and plants to achieve landscape connectivity, enhance remnant vegetation, protect soil and shelter stock.

- Managing threats: Weed and pest animal identification, control methods, integrated pest management, and staying ahead of new and emerging weeds using the latest online tools.

The on-farm workshops are aimed to commence in September 2020 and run through to May 2021.

“We will be developing and delivering three on-farm workshops to demonstrate examples of best practice farm management,” Mr Carter said.

“Topics will reflect stakeholder interest but may include areas such as - integrated weed management and tools to stay ahead of new and emerging weeds; the value of native plant and animal assets within the farm ecosystem; shelterbelts for farm productivity and ecosystem health; and birds as indicators of farm ecosystem health,” Mr Carter said.

Maldon Folk Festival cancelled

The highly anticipated 2020 Maldon Folk Festival, October 30-November 2, has been cancelled.

The local event has been held annually for more than four decades. The legendary festival atmosphere showcases an abundance of music and dance in the historic National Trust Classified Maldon township.

Maldon Folk Festival director Pam Lyons said that unfortunately the decision had been made not to go ahead this year.

“With the increased number of active CO-

VID019 cases in Victoria, high community transmission, Melbourne back in lockdown and all the state borders closed, the situation is unlikely to improve in time to put the festival together, make it financially viable and COVID safe,” Ms Lyons said.

“The most important consideration in this decision was the safety and health of our performers, volunteers, billeters, contractors and the local Maldon and Castlemaine residents. So now we cross fingers for a great event in 2021.”

Romsey golf It was an anti-climax for Romsey golfers hoping to play on Saturday, with club captain Scott Williams cancelling the scheduled round at 9am.

Several intrepid players took part in a social round later in the day, with fine conditions but casual water on two fairways.

Malcolm Mottram had the best score.

A hardy group welcomed the decision to bring forward the tees and create a par-three course on Wednesday.

This was a challenging and enjoyable change, and scores reflected the reduced length required off the tees.

Lorraine Robb 89-34-55 edged out Jenny Hartley 74-19-55 on a countback, with Darlene Baker 77-17-60 next best.

Impact on golf

Challenging times for golf clubs Dalhousie District Golf Association has acknowledged the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has created challenging times for all golf clubs and those involved.

DDGA delegates are scheduled to meet tonight and receive an update on the coronavirus situation from the association's regional development officer Sharna Faralla.

The DDGA committee, with Sue McCall as president, has been meeting on a regular basis by using Zoom link-ups.

Due to uncertainty about the duration of the pandemic, the DDGA finally decided to cancel both men's and women's pennant for this season.

Country Teams 2020, scheduled for early October, has also been abandoned.

"As we are aware the COVID-19 crisis has had a large impact on clubs, and will continue to do so into the future," Faralla stated in an earlier report.

"In saying this, we must realise that it will also have a large impact on our community, economy and the everyday life of Australians.

"Let's continue to work through this together as a united front so that golf can return stronger and better than ever on the other side of COVID-19," Faralla said.

With the unscheduled and disruptive impact on the sport, McCall has taken time out to consider some of the challenges facing golf in Australia at present.

'The 20/25 and Even Par programs, in which many Dalhousie District clubs are involved, are leading the cultural change necessary to ensure that equality of opportunity is available to all golfers, and that golf programs and events are inclusive of all.

"I encourage all committees and working parties to spend more time sharing thoughts about these important changes with colleagues," the president stated.

MEN AND WOMEN TOGETHER Broadford is one DDGA club seizing the initiative to become more inclusive.

The club's Saturday events have been rolled into a single competition not differentiating between gender.

Initially there were some concerns about the move, but results have proven how much golf can be about handicap rather than gender.

In the first few weeks of the change, women managed to win both A and B grade events.

Broadford reports that shotgun starts are also proving to be a winner, with everyone getting in at a similar time, and enjoying the social aspects at the 19th hole.

It was a case of down to the wire to decide the winner of one of Kyneton Golf Club's premier women's events on Thursday.

After a tantalising contest, the Marj Sutherland Memorial doubles knockout final was all square after 18 holes.

Denise Murphy and Robyn MacRae prevailed on the 19th hole to defeat Gini Dalton and Jenny Kerr; a very even battle indeed.

Judy Quick excelled in the July monthly medal event last Tuesday, carding 98-2573 to finish four strokes clear of Robyn MacRae 108-31-77. Quick was also the silver spoon monthly winner, and Quick, MacRae and Jenny Kerr were the ball winners.

A field of 20 turned out for the men's stableford on Wednesday, with Noel Alldis (15 handicap) the winner with 35 points, from visitor Glen Jacobs 32, on a countback from Pat Clohesy.

The nine-hole stableford went to Liz Turang (40 handicap) with 16 points, from Helen Claverdon-Jones and 35 an Dot Greenway, both 33.

Men's stableford (Wednesday): Noel Alldis carded 34 points (handicap 15) to finished ahead of visitor Glen Jacobs 32, on a countback from Pat Clohesy. Nearest the pins were Mark Sciberas and Peter Cameron.

A very wet course on Saturday led to competition events being postponed.

Some district golf clubs have been hit hard by the reintroduction of level three COVID-19 restrictions to specified areas last week.

This prevents golfers who live in designated Melbourne municipalities, or the Shire of Mitchell, from playing at courses including Trentham, Woodend, Kyneton, Lancefield, Romsey, Mount Macedon and Gisborne.

Most, if not all, of the district clubs have members from the areas where the COVID-19 restrictions are expected to apply for the next six weeks --- unless there is a dramatic improvement in the number of positive tests readings.

At the weekend, several district clubs drew attention to their obligation to strictly enforce the latest COVID-19 rules, advising the home address of any visiting golfers who arrive to play would be checked. Using a holiday house address is not valid.

District clubs welcome green fee players (as well as members) from the metropolitan area as they generate important revenue.

And there can be other problems - last Wednesday it was discovered someone had gouged the surface of the seventh and 12th greens on the Mount Macedon course.

A pea souper fog prevailed for most of the players in the par event, won by Tiger Penney with a plus-one tally from a handicap of 43.

AT TRENTHAM Conditions were tough for Trentham's stableford event on Saturday, with just three players finishing par or better.

A grade: Bob Penrose 39 points (handicap 18), from Simon Overden 37.

Callum Gartlan won B grade with 33.

The women's winner was Kristen Jensen, on a countback from Veronica Maher.

Stadiums and centres reopen Sports stadiums and leisure centres in Macedon Ranges Shire re-opened for public use yesterday.

Modifications are in place due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.

People numbers inside centres are restricted in line with government guidelines.

CEO Margot Stork said the health and safety of visitors was council's top priority.

Residents and visitors are asked to practice good hand hygiene, maintain appropriate physical distancing and to not enter if they feel unwell.

Those arriving from pandemic lockdown areas, including the neighbouring Shire of Mitchell, will not be allowed to enter the facilities.

The CEO said council is continuing to take a measured and careful approach to the re-opening of all facilities.

SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES "As we all know, businesses have been doing it hard during the pandemic.

"We encourage people to support them whenever they can at this time, when visitors from the metropolitan area are unable to enter the shire due to the current lockdown in Melbourne," Ms Stork said.

Aquatic centres, indoor and outdoor gyms, Hanging Rock Reserve, playgrounds, most libraries, sportsgrounds, parks and most public toilets in the shire are now open for public use.

Facilities yet to re-open include council's service centres some public toilets, sports pavilions and community halls.

At times a 'white out' looked on the cards, the ground was spongy and it was cold, but the Rangers kept going! The club is still hoping that its season can begin, albeit delayed, but in the meantime the Under 9 Rangers are training, laughing and running their hearts out.

Five-times world champion and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sarah Fitz-Gerald played an exhibition match when the Kyneton courts were opened.

Three nights a week The club's competition matches take place three nights a week, two at Kyneton and one at Romsey.

"We're serious about squash, and love a good contest. But we're also serious about enjoying ourselves and helping each other to improve," Hennessy said.

Squash is seen as very accessible, it's easy to play, and you can make new friends.

The Macedon Ranges Squash Club draws membership form various towns in the shire and beyond.

Players come from Kyneton, Woodend, Gisborne, Romsey, Hesket, Trentham and Daylesford, and while the club does not have a high profile, it fills an important gap.

Outside the Macedon Ranges the closest courts readily available are in Bendigo, Ballarat, Gladstone Park and Melton.

With the very obvious fitness benefits, the club anticipates more locals may come along,

even for social squash, once COVID-19 is under control.

The club has been advised by the shire council that the courts at Kyneton are open again this week.

But a restriction of 20 people in the centre - which includes the swimming pool, gymnasium and squash courts - makes it unrealistic to resume competition immediately. Players hope to restore their fitness levels in the next few weeks.

Kyneton District Soccer Club's Under 14 girls team played at Spring Gully on Saturday morning.

Coached by Jennifer Stanwix, the Rangers had a good start to the game with an early goal scored by Monica O'Toole.

The Kyneton team was too strong for Spring Gully, with Ava Coleman, Madi Hacche, Heather Stanwix and Laura Stanwix relentless in defence and Isha Kuyateh powerful in the midfield. By halftime Kyneton was leading 9-0.

In the second half goalkeeper Rebecca Rush managed her first touch for the entire game. The final score was a 15-0 win to Kyneton.

Heather Stanwix scored her first goal for the club, Sian Hooppell (pictured) scored five goals, Ivy Morris-Perrot scored four, Monica O'Toole three and Bronte Randle one. The team came together well after last week's defeat in Castlemaine, showing real spirit and determination.

Meanwhile the Under 14 mixed team also won 15-0 on the same pitch. The team celebrated with a song as it was coach Mick Coleman's 50th birthday.

It was great to see the non-competitive teams commencing this week, with all of the club proud to be wearing their new kit, courtesy of the generous sponsors.

‘Healthiest sport in the world’ Macedon Ranges Squash Club members have been in 'limbo' since COVID-19 restrictions were imposed, bringing their season to an abrupt halt.

It's hoped to resume competition soon, and the club has been buoyed by a new overseas survey that reveals squash is 'the healthiest sport in the world'.

Enthusiastic club president George Hennessy said the Forbes International survey sent a clear message, with input from personal trainers, coaches and exercise physiologists.

There were 10 different sports rated as being the 'healthiest' in terms of cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, calories burned in 30 minutes, and injury risk.

"Squash took first place," Hennessy said.

And a British Journal of Sports Medicine study of 80,000 adults suggests that squash is ultimately the best sport to ensure a long life.

Macedon Ranges Squash Club eventually evolved from what was originally a merger of Kyneton men's and women's squash clubs back in the early 1980s.

Part of the multi-million Kyneton Toyota Sports and Aquatic Centre, the courts opened in 2011, and the club currently has a membership fluctuating around the 50 to 70 mark, across various age groups and catering for both male and females of varying abilities.

Romsey Golf Club is seeking ground improvements for Romsey Park to extend yearly use and safety.

Unsuccessful in a bid for council funds last year, the club made a return submission for levelling and drainage works, irrigation system upgrades and couch grass seeding to Macedon Ranges Council's 2020/21 budget.

Romsey Golf Club's Malcolm Mottram said couch was the preferred surface for most outdoor sporting venues and would drastically improve the park for all users.

"It's very hardy and extremely water efficient. The current mix of grass on the course is made up of winter and perennial grasses, which die off quite quickly when summer comes and the heat hits," he said.

"Couch would mean having greenery all throughout the year and people will be able to use the park effectively for longer periods throughout the year."

Accompanying levelling and drainage works would help to extend the life of the couch grass.

Mr Mottram said Romsey Golf Club members had been the unofficial custodians of Romsey Park since the 1920s, putting in hours of volunteer labour each week, and members were keen to see the grounds upgraded.

Edging on 100 years, the club hosts regional pennant competitions, tournaments, junior golf clinics, charity events and social gatherings and events.

In the last financial year the club had 86 members but since the COVID-19 lockdown this figure has grown with expectations these memberships will be renewed.

The club also expects to increase in members with several new housing estates that are developing in and around Romsey.

The club predicts it will surpass its three-year goal of 15 per cent membership increase.

The club's submission will form part of Macedon Ranges Council's budget deliberations.

Let there be lights call for Lancefield Amy Hume Lancefield Park's long-awaited lighting upgrade is a step closer.

User groups are thrilled the project could soon become a reality after it was included in Macedon Ranges Council's draft 2020/21 budget.

Lancefield Football Netball Club president Gina Morgan said the lighting upgrade had been on the club's wishlist for many years to improve safety and bring the park up to same standard as others in the shire.

"Without the lighting upgrade it's a huge occupational health and safety issue for user groups," she said.

"Our current lights are well behind the standards that other ovals have got. It's definitely time for an upgrade. We're very appreciative of the council's understanding of the need."

At least six submissions were received in support of the project. One stating: "Lancefield is continually left behind in comparison to towns such as Gisborne" and urged the council to "please help bridge the gap".

Ms Morgan said the park was an amazing asset for the community and many would benefit from the project. The park attracts a range of events and user groups including the Lancefield Agricultural Show and Relay for Life.

The 2020/21 draft budget includes $64,000 in council funds supported by a $50,000 contribution from local clubs and $228,000 state government grant.

The budget is yet to be finalised but community submissions will considered as part of council's deliberations.
