Castlemaine Health has suspended its maternity services for up to another six months as it works to implement the recommendations of its recent review.

The review recommends a new model of maternity care, along with new clinical and governance processes. The reviewers have advised that, due to concerns about the potential risks associated with the current model, the service remain suspended until the key recommendations are addressed.

Midwives, GP obstetricians, the Department of Health and Human Services, Safer Care Victoria, Bendigo Health and regional partners, and the community will all be part of the process.

Board chair Margaret (Peggy) Ronnau said the report made clear that unless the hospital was fully committed to making the changes recommended, the service would likely close within the next 12-18 months.

"Nobody wants to see that happen," she said.

Castlemaine Health CEO Ian Fisher said everyone involved was committed to reopening the maternity service as soon as possible.

"We are already putting in place a maternity services governance group and we're feeling very positive about the future.

Our board and executive, midwives and GP obstetricians are committed to working together to reopen the service as soon as possible," Mr Fisher said.

Local GP obstetricians Dr Veronica Moule, Dr Frances Harkin, Dr Louisa Hope and Dr Richard Mayes said they understood there would be disappointment in the community that the service was not re-opening immediately.

Local couple Katie Dircks and partner Owen are among those who have been affected by suspension of birthing services at Castlemaine Health.

"We are also disappointed but accept that this is not practically possible at this time," they said.

"The GPOs and midwives are enthusiastic that the new model will support long-term sustainable birthing services for our region, and we will be working with the hospital and community to ensure this occurs ASAP."

The state government is providing $100,000 to establish two new positions, including a director of maternity services and a project manager to help the board work towards resuming birthing services.

It will also fund a $180,000 cardiotocography electronic foetal monitoring system remotely linked to Bendigo Health to ensure extra oversight and support.

Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards said with collaboration, cooperation and additional resources the new model of care could be delivered in a timely fashion.

Local lobby group 'Support Birthing at Castlemaine Health' welcomed support from the hospital board, the Department of Health and Human Services and Safer Care Victoria for the service.

"We need to keep pressure on the hospital board and management to ensure that the transition is being progressed in a timely manner. We need to call upon our local members and relevant ministers to ensure they commit the resources and support to Castlemaine Health to facilitate the transition quickly," a spokesperson said.

Applications for the clinical lead midwifery position closed Friday and the successful applicant is expected to commence in four to six weeks.

The new clinical lead will oversee implementation of the recommendations.

Castlemaine Health will also be working closely with the community to ensure their feedback and experiences of maternity care help shape the new model of care.

More train services

Bendigo Line rail users are set to benefit from more frequent train services as part of a $300 million regional rail funding boost from the Victorian and federal governments.

The extra funding for the Bendigo Line upgrade will help to deliver a modernised electronic train ordering system - the first of its kind in Victoria - enabling more frequent services between Epsom, Eaglehawk and Bendigo.

Ten level crossings between Eaglehawk and Bendigo will also be upgraded with better train detection technology, boosting safety and allowing more services to run in this section.

The additional funding for the Regional Rail Revival brings the total investment in Victoria's regional rail network to more than $2 billion.

The Regional Rail Revival program is upgrading every regional line in Victoria, creating more than 1000 jobs and providing boosts to local economies.

Ms Thomas said the Andrews Labor Government had been pleased to invest $60,000 in the project, as well as funding the construction of a new shed in Kyneton, and a first-ever men's shed in Trentham.

The district MP has been involved since the Romsey project's inception, and said she looked forward to being there for the official opening.

"Congratulations to Patrick (Holt), Steve (Goodman), Paul (Green), Cr Bill West and all the other Romsey shedders on their hard work in getting this off the ground," she said, praising the executive's persistence to succeed.

Federal Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell endorsed the comments and reiterated the value of men's sheds for communities. He was pleased to help with a $20,000 grant.

Cr West said both he and the shire council were very pleased to see the project reach this stage; it would be an undoubted asset for the community.

Men's sheds promote health and wellbeing and enhance community engagement and are used by men from a range of different backgrounds and age groups.

The Romsey committee has already received welcome donations of tools and equipment, and membership is growing.

President Steve Goodman expressed thanks to all who have helped in any way.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Friday to mark an important milestone for the long-awaited Romsey Men's Shed project.

With a lease signed and a building permit obtained, the slab for the shed is expected to be poured within the next fortnight.

Rain on Friday failed to dampen the enthusiasm of those present at the shed site in Romsey Park, next to the scout hall.

"This is going to be fantastic for men in Romsey who will soon be able to catch up with their mates and share their skills in their new shed," Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said.

Legendary muso becomes new citizen Amy Hume He’s considered one of the most genuinely talented figures in Australian music still at the top of his game and now Australia can officially lay claim - and Kyneton too!

The Black Sorrows frontman Joe Camilleri had called Australia home for 70 years before he was made one of the Macedon Ranges’ newest citizens last month.

The third eldest from a Maltese migrant family, Camilleri said he had always felt like a citizen of the world, but his citizenship gave him a “wonderful release and sense of belonging”.

“I should’ve done it earlier but it was just one of those things: every time I tried, something went completely haywire.”

It’s not an overstatement. What should have been a much smoother process was complicated by poor recordkeeping during wartime and bureaucracy.

What Camilleri didn’t anticipate was that he had four different birth certificates with four different names: none of which he completely identified with. Adding to the challenge was his decision to “reclaim” his own name through Births, Deaths and Marriages.

For the first time, this year, he was finally able to complete the paperwork.

“Here’s the thing: I am Australian. I feel Australian.

I’ve always felt Australian, so it wasn’t that I didn’t feel like I belonged, but I said, ‘I’m finally doing it’,” he told the Express.

For weeks he was asking his brothers and sisters to quiz him for an Australian citizen test that he was “amped up to do”. But there was no test.

There was also no ceremony at the Kyneton Town Hall this year or crowd. Coronavirus precautions meant, instead, a digital one-on-one with the mayor Cr Janet Pearce.

“I felt so excited. I felt like a 12-year-old. I was overjoyed,” he said.

“It was new for me, new for the mayor, and I was so excited that I forgot to say, ‘Do I get the wattle - are you going to send me a few seeds?’.”

His mother came by herself to Australia with four children under five on a two-month voyage. His father was already on the other side.

“I think it would have been a very difficult choice to make. Leaving your friends and family behind is such a big thing,” he said.

“They gave us an opportunity to be what we were going to be - even though I was a f-k-up first!”

Camilleri may have found his calling through music but there was some disillusionment first. He left school when he was 12 and a half, and discovered quickly what he didn’t want to do.

“That was a real disappointment - to me. I just got a

useless job. I think music was a kind of release for me. I got into the music business because I liked singing and I could sing the songs of the day. I felt I was part of some fraternity that I didn’t even know existed.

“With tenacity, will and love - I didn’t know what I was doing, I was just doing. The more I got into it, the more I got seduced by it.”

Jo Jo Zep and The Falcons was his first taste of fame in his 20s but life almost returned to ‘normal’ once Camilleri had achieved his ambition of touring in the US and UK. He began a young family and picked up odd jobs in manual labour and hospitality.

It had been about a year since the demise of his first band when someone asked Camilleri to play at a Melbourne café. He brought together a group of like-minded musicians for the gig and for what was the beginning of The Black Sorrows.

It wasn’t long before songs such as So Young, Hit and Run, Shape I’m In, Hold On To Me, Harley and Rose, Chained to the Wheel, Never Let Me Go and The Chosen Ones became radio staples.

Camilleri has been awarded ‘living legend’ status by Rolling Stone, inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and his career spans more than 50 years, but don’t call him a music star - he humbly rejects the tag.

“I’m just a geezer. I’m not a rock god. I don’t live it - but I do live to play music,” he said.

The Black Sorrows still average 150 shows a year and Camilleri is just about to release his 50th album.

Now enjoying the natural beauty of the Macedon Ranges every day, Camilleri calls Kyneton home and he owes it all to a stopover that allowed him to take in the atmosphere.

“I came here for a coffee and I bought a house,” he said.

“It was just the right time and moment. I’ve just fallen in love with it. I love coming home. In fact, I never stay anywhere anymore if I can help it, I will always come home - even if it’s a four-hour drive.

“All around here is beautiful and it’s just a beautiful thing to have an Australian citizenship and feel that there’s a belonging there.”

Cat curfew hits Macedon Ranges

Cats must now be confined to their property from sunset to sunrise with the Macedon Ranges cat curfew taking effect from July 1.

The new requirements are a result of extensive public consultation that began with the development of the Domestic Animal Management Plan 2017-2021 and forms part of the Dog and Cat Control Order.

Council's director of planning and environment Angela Hughes said the council had worked to balance the needs of cats, their owners and the broader community, while reducing the impact of cats on the natural environment.

Cat owners are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the new legal requirements, including prohibited areas for cats.

Ms Hughes recognised building cat enclosures and making behavioural adjustments for cats would take time.

"We are asking cat owners to implement appropriate overnight housing for their cat or cats now," Ms Hughes said.

"With many cat owners currently spending more time at home, this is a great opportunity to work on changing your cat/s behaviour and monitor your cat for possible signs of stress while it adapts to change."

Mobile phones, printer cartridges and toner can still be recycled at the Lancefield Post Office.

Lancefield locals are encouraged to think twice about what they are sending to landfill through the launch of a Lancefield Recycle Centre last week.

The Neighbourhood House initiative enables residents to ethically dispose of normally hard-to-recycle waste through simple sorting at The Townhouse droppoint.

People can now easily dispose of and recycle bread tags, writing instruments, dish washing and air products, contact lenses and cases and batteries (AA, AAA, C, D and nine-volt).

Murray Primary Health Network has launched a new counselling service to help community members with a variety of emotional issues, including anxiety, depression, isolation and loneliness.

Talk it Out is a free phone and online counselling service for people in the Murray PHN region (stretching from Woodend to Mildura) who are feeling the pressures and stresses of everyday life.

The service, which is aimed at those aged 15 and over, is provided by professionally trained counsellors who will listen and help people develop strategies to manage what is causing them to feel stressed or overwhelmed.

"We also know that at any one time, around one in five adults in the Murray PHN region is experiencing mental illhealth," he said.

"This service provides access to free, confidential counselling 24/7 and will link

people with additional services locally, to ensure they remain supported throughout their recovery."

Samantha Fredericks, On the Line CEO, said residents aged 15 years and older would be able to contact Talk it Out via the phone or online and speak to a professional counsellor who could provide advice, counselling and referrals.

"Our counsellors will assess each person's situation and use a strengthsbased approach, focusing on increasing their capabilities and resilience," she said.

"Now, more than ever, people are seeking convenient telehealth support for mental health concerns such as anxiety, loneliness, and stress."

One of the images captured by the long-time local photographer has just been used on gold and silver limited edition commemorative coins produced by the Perth Mint.

"We finally got a silver one in our hot little hands and I'm pretty chuffed," Mr Chapman told the Express.

The image that he captured while visiting NSW's Mungo National Park way back in 2013 features two emus and has now become part of the mint's ongoing wildlife series of limited edition collectible coins.

"I particularly remember this day," the local photographer said of the moment he captured the image.

"I was waiting for a tour to start and watching emus. One knelt down to drink and I don't know if you've ever seen an emu kneel to drink, but their legs bend

backwards. It was a really quirky shot."

He said the reproduction of the image on the collectible gold and silver one ounce (31 gram) coins had been "a slow burn" process that involved the image first being purchased by Austockphoto with the Perth Mint then obtaining the rights to reproduce the image in quantity.

But it's a limited quantity - with just 2500 of the silver proof and 5000 of the gold bullion coins produced - and by all accounts they're being snapped up fast.

"The silver coin cost $105 to buy but it's $1 dollar legal tender, and the gold coin is worth $2700 to buy and it's $100 legal tender," Mr Chapman said.

To collectors and over time they're potentially going to be worth much more and Mr Chapman admits that having his work preserved for posterity in such a manner is a bit of a professional coup.

"It's brilliant. Not many photographers get to have that sort of honour," laughed the local photographer who's well known through his shopfront in Castlemaine's Mostyn Street.

"I'd love people to come in and see it."

Powerlifting women feature Eve Lamb

Castlemaine’s Jill Murphy and local powerlifting coach Dean Mawby look on as Guildford’s Pam Adams prepares to tackle a powerlift. women who did powerlifting or regular strength training might "become bulky", might injure themselves, might not find gyms welcoming for them, or might not be capable of engaging in powerlifting at all.

"This study is valuable for breaking the myths down," the local coach said.

"One of the things this study highlighted is the value of the social aspect in training, in being able to have a chat with other people while you're training."

And while they did not participate in the study themselves, Guildford's Pam Adams and Castlemaine's Jill Murphy are both in their '70s and last year took up regular powerlifting classes.

"I'm loving it," said Pam who took to powerlifting to help recover from a broken leg.

"It's just a real buzz to be able to lift these weight. My kids think it's hysterical."

Thirteen Castlemaine women who participate in powerlifting have contributed to a study investigating factors that may deter older women from strength training.

Aimed at helping to overcome barriers to strength training, which is known to stave off many undesirable health conditions in later life, the newly released study is called If they can do it, I can do it: experiences of older woman who engage in powerlifting training.

Completed by a team of researchers with the School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences, Central Queensland University, it has just been published in the international Journal of Women and Ageing.

Thirteen local women aged over 50 who train at Castlemaine's Real Strength studio were approached by the researchers to participate in the qualitative peerreviewed study.

Real Strength powerlifting head coach Dean Mawby said there were many myths that often prevented people - especially older women - from participating in powerlifting or strength training, thereby meaning they missed out on considerable benefits it could bring.

"We have more than 60 people who train with us who are over 60 and our eldest is 83," Mr Mawby said.

"In fact we have five people who are over 80.

"There's a lot of research that's come out about why it's critical for people over 50 to do strength training but many people who are older are scared of it and there's some very big misconceptions about it."

He said those included notions that

The suspected shooting of a wedge-tailed eagle in Macedon has left a community shocked.

The injured eagle was discovered along Forbes Road near the intersection of Lawson Road in Macedon on June 22 and taken to a local vet.

An examination and x-ray showed a broken wing and fragments of a bullet were found at the site. It is believed the eagle was deliberately shot. The eagle had to be euthanised due to the extent of its injuries.

Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network said this was the second known wedge-tail eagle shooting this year.

TEDx Kyneton launched as an independently organised project under the banner last week and received six applications within the first 24 hours.

Mr Kooperman said the project had a specific focus on giving women a platform to share ideas.

"I think women are often under-represented when it comes to voicing ideas in this way. This will provide a platform where they can do that," he said.

Speakers interested in applying should approach topics in both a regional and global context. Talks should be between two and eight minutes long. Each talk will be filmed and screened online.

Mr Kooperman, from Lancefield, has organised the TEDx event with Kyneton local Jessica Grant.

Construction on a new fixed wireless NBN tower at Woodend has begun. An NBN Co spokesperson said the location for the tower at Yalonga Road had been selected as the best possible site in order to provide fixed wireless services to about 280 residents.

Castlemaine district farmer Malcolm Robbins will feature on SBS Insight tonight.

Local identity set to feature

One of Castlemaine district’s own, Malcolm Robbins, will feature on an SBS Insight episode tonight exploring neighbours.

The program airs at 8.30pm.

What are the stories behind neighbours who become more than just a wave over the fence?

Malcolm is a 90-year-old farmer who knows the land he lives on back to front.

Malcolm once owned all of the surrounding acres of property on his street, until he got older and sold them off over the years creating a small neighbourhood. The problem was a lot of the neighbours who moved into the street came from Melbourne and knew very little about farming.

Malcolm became the lifeblood of the neighbourhood, teaching his new neighbours how to put up fences, drive tractors and maintain their properties. He’s a hit with the children and has made many of them fall in love with farming. Since COVID hit, the neighbourhood has turned to helping Malcolm - putting up signs telling people not to enter the property and taking care of his everyday life as he can no longer leave the house. Malcolm still hangs over the fence though and chats with his neighbours every day - from a safe distance.

Neighbour Linda said Malcolm had

been a wonderful support.

“When we moved here I was a complete city slicker. I knew nothing, I didn’t even know how big an acre was. But having Malcolm and other neighbours, they’ve taught us everything,” she said.

“Malcolm has taught us all how to maintain our properties. He’s like a savant for the land. Malcolm’s veggie patch is famous in the community. He has a huge market garden but he doesn’t go to market, he shares everything with his neighbours.”

Linda said she had never experienced anything like that in Melbourne.

“We didn’t expect anyone to help us because when we lived in Melbourne you didn’t really have people show such an interest in your life. I’ve never had a neighbour like Malcolm and I don’t expect to have a neighbour like Malcolm again,” she said.

Malcolm says he enjoys sharing his produce with the neighbourhood and its great to have people stop in and say hello and enjoy a bit of a yack.

“My neighbours are very good neighbours, they are very helpful. They will do anything for me. They cook me a bloody meal and everything!” he said.

New digs for Kyneton crews

The Kyneton team of electricity distributor Powercor has moved into a new depot.

The $10 million development at Redesdale Road replaces the former depot that was built in 1979.

The depot includes better office facilities, storage areas for equipment and fleet, and can support the future expansion of the workforce.

A heritage-listed tree was also sensitively incorporated into the design of the new depot, now taking pride of place behind the main office building.

Powercor used local building supplies and tradespeople wherever possible to complete the development.

Kyneton field leader Gary Scanlon said the new depot

was an enormous upgrade to the previous facility.

"It's like chalk and cheese," Gary said.

"The old depot was very small and built more than 40 years ago, but this new depot is amazing.

"It's set on a six-acre block and all of our trucks can now be locked away securely undercover.

"The guys love the place and we had well and truly outgrown our old site."

Gary said the new depot allowed local crews to better serve communities in the Macedon Ranges and surrounds.

"Our local depots like Kyneton allow us to manage and respond to faults quickly and effectively and this

upgrade provides more room and a better planned space to accommodate our crews," he said.

"This local investment means we are well placed to serve the people of Kyneton and surrounds well into the future."

In 2019 alone, Powercor crews from Kyneton responded to more than 900 callouts in the local area, including for weather events, vegetation impacts and vehicle collisions.

Coliban Water offers support Coliban Water has a range of hardship support measures for customers who face payment difficulties.

Report aims to reducing indigenous suicides

The Coroners Court of Victoria has released a new report on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander suicides to support prevention responses across the state.

The report, Victorian suicides of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, presents an analysis of all indigenous deaths identified as suicides in Victoria between 2009-2020, including socioeconomic demographics and contextual stressors.

Suicide rates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Victoria are twice that of the state's non-indigenous population, with young indigenous Victorians being most at risk.

The report will establish the foundation for ongoing annual reporting on indigenous suicides by the court, with a view to build a comprehensive public dataset over time.

With this information, communities and organisations working to prevent indigenous suicides will be able to effectively target resources and programs designed to reduce deaths.

The court has also provided the report to the Royal Commission into Victoria's Mental Health System, to contribute to the statewide review of mental health services and models of care.

The report was developed by the Coroners Koori Engagement Unit and Coroners Prevention Unit, utilising data from the Victorian Suicide Register, a real-time database containing information on all suicides reported to and investigated by Victorian coroners since January 1, 2000.

Rates of suicide were found to be higher in regional areas (59.8 per cent) than in metropolitan areas (40.2 per cent).

State Coroner John Cain said the report established an ongoing, publicly accessible resource to support prevention programs from local communities, Aboriginalled organisations and government.

"The Royal Commission will also consider this important data, as they look to find opportunities to make systemic changes to save Victorian lives," he said.

Troy Williamson, Coroners Koori Engagement Unit manager, said this was valuable data.

"It can inform existing programs and strengthen our communities' culturally safe responses to Aboriginal wellbeing," he said.

"The Coroners Koori Engagement Unit is uniquely placed in Victoria to produce this significant resource.

"The public database allows us to use our data to the greatest benefit and assist the many organisations actively working to reduced suicides in our communities across Victoria."

"A key strategic direction of Strategy 2030, our 10year plan to achieve our vision of Water to Live, Grow and Enjoy, is to partner with industry and government to build water services that support business, industry and employment," Mr Wells said.

JobKeeper and JobSeeker and your tax If you have received JobKeeper payments from your employer, you don’t need to do anything differently this tax time.

The payments will be included as salary and wages and/or allowances, in your regular income statement, which your employer provides directly to the ATO. Your income statement can be accessed via myGov and the information is automatically included into your tax return by the end of July. If you use a tax agent, they also have access to this information. The figures in your income statement should already include any JobKeeper you have received. If you aren’t sure, check with your employer. Sole traders who have received the JobKeeper payment on behalf of their business will need to include the payments as assessable income for the business.

If you have received JobSeeker, the ATO will also load this information into your tax return at the Government Payments and Allowances question once it’s ready. If you are lodging before this information is included for you, you will need to make sure you include it. Leaving out income can slow your return down or result in a bill later so it’s definitely best avoided.

Stand down payments Some employees may have received a one-off or regular payment after being temporarily stood down due to COVID-19. These payments are also taxable and appear in your income statement and in your return. If you aren’t sure whether these amounts have been included in your income statement, you should check with your employer.

Other income types Similarly, taxpayers need to include income such as income protection, sickness or accident insurance payments, redundancy payments and accrued leave payments in their tax return. The tax return instructions explain how to include these amounts.

Early access to superannuation If you received early access to your super this year under the special arrangements due to COVID-19, any amounts you’ve withdrawn from super under this program are tax-free and you do not need to declare them in your tax return.

Examples Example 1 - Barista receiving JobKeeper Ethan is an employee who works as a barista. After being financially impacted by COVID-19, the café Ethan works for enrolled to receive JobKeeper payments on his behalf.

The café continues operating as takeaway only and Ethan is given some hand sanitiser for use during his shifts. He also purchases a face mask, which he is not reimbursed for.

When he completes his tax return, he claims the cost of the face mask, ensuring he keeps his receipt as proof of his purchase.

He also checks that his salary and wages and allowances on his income statement are up to date, including JobKeeper payments made to him by the café. Ethan needs to confirm that his total salary and wages and any allowances are included in his tax return.

Generally, this will be included in his return by the ATO by the end of July and will include JobKeeper payments.

Example 2 - IT contractor working from home Natalie is employed by a company that provides IT support. From time to time Natalie must drive her car from the office to the client’s premises and assist them on site. Due to COVID-19, Natalie began working from home on March 23 and was only able to provide phone support to clients. Natalie purchased a new headset and stationery, as well as incurring additional phone and internet costs while working from home.

Natalie decides to claim all her working from home expenses using the new temporary rate of 80 cents per hour. She uses her time sheets to calculate the hours she worked from home between March 23 and June 30.

When she completes her tax return, Natalie makes sure she only claims a deduction for the car expenses she incurred when travelling from the office to the client’s premises. As Natalie worked solely from home for approximately three months of the year, mostly supporting clients over the phone, her claim for car expenses this year is less than her claim for last year.

For most Australians, income statements have replaced payment summaries. This means that instead of receiving a payment summary from their employer, most people’s income statements will be finalised electronically, and the information provided directly to the ATO. You can view your income statement through myGov and the information from it is automatically included in your return in myTax by the ATO. If you use a tax agent, they will also have access to this information.

Income statements show their year-to-date salary and wages, PAYG withholding tax, and any employer super contributions in near real-time, but it is important to wait until it is finalised before lodging a tax return.

After people have linked to the ATO, they can not only lodge their tax returns during tax time, but also track their refunds, access their past tax records, manage their super accounts, and view their income statement.

Linking myGov to the ATO also allows sole traders eligible for JobKeeper or wishing to manage their business obligations, to enrol and nominate through ATO online services via MyGov. Those who haven’t used online services before will need to follow the linking process outlined above.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is advising people to act now to improve their tax time experience. There are some simple things taxpayers can do now to ensure they can lodge their tax return quickly, securely, and smoothly.

Assistant Commissioner Karen Foat said that if you are planning on lodging your own return, you can’t beat the ease and accessibility of the ATO’s online myTax service.

It has almost completely replaced paper lodgments.

“It’s no surprise that myTax, which processes most refunds in less than two weeks and many in under a week, is growing in popularity,” Ms Foat said.

“Most people with simple tax affairs can lodge in under half-an-hour from the comfort of their own homes. For most people a lot of their income will be automatically included in their return by the end of July, making it even easier.

“But there are two main speed-bumps that taxpayers hit when lodging online via myTax for the first time. The first is linking their myGov account to the ATO’s online services.”

Avoid Speedbump 1: Link myGov to the ATO now if you plan to do your own return “My number one piece of advice for people who are going to use myTax for the first time is to log into your myGov account and link to the ATO well before tax time. Warming Woodend with cheer

Woodend Library manager Lulu Cockram has welcomed the community back with an explosion of colour and cheer.

Woodend Library has been yarn-bombed and its bright new look is bringing joy to visitors.

The library's frontage, bike racks, trees, posts and outdoor bench-seats are covered in hundreds of knitted and crocheted pieces created by the community.

Library manager Lulu Cockram said the temporary street art project continued the fun from previous years.

"It's making people happy. People have come in to thank us for the display, saying it has brightened their day," she said.

The community-made woollen creations have accumulated since the art project first launched back in 2013 and people are continuing to add their colourful knitted goods.

"Community members are dropping off pieces and hundreds of children have hung yarn in the trees," Ms Cockram said.

"Community art provides people with an opportunity to be creative and connect with their community."

If knitting isn't your thing - donations of knitted and crocheted panels, wool or knitting needles will be gratefully accepted and passed on to others.

The library reopened its doors to the public with a click and collect service last month, following a coronavirus pause, and now invites limited numbers inside as activity returns.

Gisborne, Kyneton and Woodend are now open and have lots of opportunities to explore, engage and create.

Riddell bridge works

The state government has announced funding for a vital bridge strengthening project in Riddells Creek.

The government is investing $10 million across regional Victoria to upgrade bridges and culverts through its Building Works package, which will create and support jobs on the ground and in the supply chain. Crews will improve the foundations on Wurundjeri Creek bridge on Kilmore Road to prevent deterioration and increase durability.

Upgrades range from full bridge replacements and foundation strengthening to drainage repairs and road surface improvements.

Have your say on local laws

Mount Alexander Shire Council is inviting the community to have a say on a draft General Local Law by making a submission or completing a survey.

It is proposed the single law will replace the existing Local Laws No. 2 to 6 and the Local Law Procedures Manual, which are due to expire in November 2020.

The draft General Local Law covers laws that relate to amenity on private property and in public places, animal and waste management, the protection of infrastructure and assets, permits, administration and enforcement.

Council's director of infrastructure and development Jess Howard said local laws were a regulatory instrument used by local governments to regulate a broad range of issues to protect public health, safety and amenity in the community.

"We want to build a greater understanding and support for our local laws to increase quality of life and liveability in our shire," she said.

Living a grieving process Woodend Lifestyle Carers is a group of people who have travelled the dementia path with a loved one.

They have published their stories in the hope that other carers may reach out for assistance.

Here, Wendy Judge shares her story of caring for her partner Bob. Our dementia journey started 11 years ago with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, young onset Parkinson’s disease.

When we received this diagnosis, my husband Bob and I had been married for almost 40 years. We had been living an enviable life as Bob worked as an aircraft engineer. Of course we travelled whenever we could. As Bob’s symptoms, some of which were: slowness, tiredness, hand tremor, rigidity, constipation, loss of taste and smell, were manageable, he stayed at work for another five years. The disease was moving slowly during this time.

We joined Parkinson’s Victoria and a Parkinson’s support group. We attended lectures and seminars to try to understand what Parkinson’s was.

We found that there were many symptoms. It is classed as a ‘designer disease’. Not everyone has the same symptoms.

Not long after retirement, small incidents began occurring. Bob would forget to lock the car or the doors of the house. In our house everything had its place, not anymore! We are constantly looking for the TV control, his phone or his iPad. I am constantly looking for lost cutlery, sometimes thrown out or placed in some other drawer or cupboard. I once found my oven mitts put away in the electric frypan. A photo of Bob and his new car in 1969 took up residence in our scanner.

I would become extremely frustrated, often angry, with Bob over continuous incidents like this. He would make

statements that weren’t true. I would become angry and frustrated and try to logically prove he was incorrect.

Nothing worked and my frustration increased.

That was the beginning of Parkinson’s mild cognition impairment.

After a medical assessment in 2018 a diagnosis of Parkinson’s dementia was made. From MCI to dementia. I was so pleased! It sounds crazy, but it was a relief to find out that something was truly wrong.

I could now start trying to understand the disease. I attended workshops and seminars offered by Dementia Australia. We joined the Woodend Lifestyle Carers Group.

My carer role was to become clearer.

Carers Victoria defines carers as: ‘…people who provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who are frail aged.’

When did I become a carer?

I realise that I became a carer from day one, first with support for the chronic condition of Parkinson’s disease, then the added mental illness of Parkinson’s dementia and now the disability associated with both.

I am now a full-time carer of a person with Parkinson’s disease with dementia, i.e. 24/7. Yes 24/7, no straight six to eight hours’ sleep for me.

Travelling down the dementia road is extremely frustrating, very painful and sad. It is a slow process and with each step and hurdle I am losing the man I loved. He was the most caring and devoted husband who treated me like a princess. I would find love notes under my pillow, he would open the car door for me and he would buy me gifts. He hugged me when I cried and helped me deal with my problems. He was my rock. His love was

unconditional. He was a wonderful husband and caring father. I am talking in the past tense. That has gone now.

He has become selfish, uncaring, lacks empathy and is single minded.

Now, I am living through a grieving process. The whole family is grieving the loss of a wonderful man. We have all watched the change in his personality over time.

The support I have had from my daughter, grandson and the rest of the family has been amazing and essential for my sanity. The support I have had from the WLCG has helped enormously. Members are available 24/7. They have guided me so that I can be prepared in advance. In the earlier stages of the dementia, they told me to have Bob assessed by My Aged Care, then, to place his name down for respite care, and, if or when required, permanent care.

I have ‘time out’ (respite) from caring for Bob. One day a week he attends ‘Treehouse’ at Kyneton. It is a ‘program that supports people who are living at home with any stage of dementia’. He also meets with his Probus group.

I play bridge (online bridge during COVID-19), and attend two carers groups when I can. I sometimes have morning tea with a friend on a Sunday morning.

I am learning how to accept help, and, more importantly, to ask for help.

For now, I wake up each morning, and say: “no expectations” and “acceptance”.

I don’t know how long the road is or how many hurdles I have to jump over or even how high they are, but I will always be there with my fantastic memories of our life together.

Almost three-quarters of Victorians have saved more than an hour per day on their work commute as a result of COVID-19 travel restrictions, according to an RACV survey.

More than 72 per cent of the Victorians who took part in the survey said they were saving 40 minutes or more by working from home, including 19 per cent who were saving up to two hours or more.

The results also showed that more than 50 per cent of Victorians want to continue to work or study from home post restrictions being eased, with more than a third of the respondents hoping to do so in the coming weeks. RACV senior planner Stuart Outhred said the results highlighted an opportunity to ease traffic congestion on Victoria’s already burdened road network.

“With 50 per cent of Victorians interested in working from home half of the work week in the future, we hope to see employers provide flexible work opportunities for those seeking the balance between home and the office,” Mr Outhred said.

“This choice can improve the satisfaction of many Victorians, while alleviating the pressures on our road network if people continue to avoid public transport.

“We are already seeing an increase in traffic volumes and Melbourne’s chronic congestion will only become worse if more Victorians choose to drive instead of catching trains, trams or buses.”

The survey, designed to be a pulse check on how Victorians have adapted to COVID-19, also highlighted that 44 per cent planned to incorporate more exercise around their local neighbourhoods and 15 per cent wanted to ride a bicycle more regularly.

Mr Outhred said it wasn’t surprising that the survey showed an increasing public interest in active transport options.

Rob Chapman, Redesdale Gold, gold, gold ... trouble, trouble, and more trouble. Now there is another mining threat, this time the Wombat State Forest.

The Fosterville Gold mine bonanza has uncorked quite the nasty environmental genie as mining companies once again probe the geological stratum. Back in the late 1980s when the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works was building the Western Trunk Sewer from Melbourne to Werribee the boring machine passed through a rich vein of gold in the North Altona/Laverton area. Many specimens were removed by Museum of Victoria and others as boring ceased for a short while.

The site was patched before being sealed behind the concrete casement of the sewer. Well how about that gold exploration companies? You don't need to disturb our unspoiled endangered bushland, go dig up suburbia, it's already ruined, and who knows what lies beneath those basalt plains around Melbourne, toxic waste!

The Andrews Government has granted a gold exploration licence that includes a state forest where the aim is to manage the forest and maintain some of the natural habitat. As well as the environs surrounding the Lerderderg and Werribee Gorges that create a breathing space beyond the ever-expanding planning disaster that is the Melbourne metropolitan area. This act alone demonstrates the environmental ignorance and insensitivity of the Victorian State Labor Party in government, which would no doubt be on par with the Liberal National Coalition.

Aerial bundling needed Mary Reid, Kyneton In many streets of Kyneton what were once beautiful trees have been savagely reduced to grotesque shapes by frequent cutting back carried out by contractors for Powercor.

In some streets, trees have only one half of their canopy left, making them unbalanced and potentially unsafe.

In other streets, trees such as claret ashes are kept so low and spreading they block footpaths and look weirdly unnatural.

If Kyneton's trees continue to be cut in this way they will become unsustainable and their loves shortened.

Street trees are a valuable asset and we cannot afford to lose them.

I want the shire council to investigate safer alternatives such as aerial bundled cabling to replace open wiring.

Aerial bundled cabling exists in some streets and trees are allowed to grow to within one metre of the cable (with open wiring vegetation must be kept three metres away). This makes a huge improvement in the trimming and allows the tree to form a natural canopy. Visually the trees and the streetscape are vastly improved.

In addition to well-known environmental and health benefits of street trees, several studies have shown street trees can add $20-50,000 to the value of properties in a leafy street.

The loss or degradation of street trees not only affects property values but would also undermine council's rate base.

As council now wants residents to have their say on the draft budget, I have written to them to formulate a plan - in partnership with Powercor - to preserve and protect our street trees from further damaging cutbacks.

Changing demands Maree Edwards MP, Member for Bendigo West and Mary-Anne Thomas MP, Member for Macedon Victoria has some of the best firefighters in the world, but they have been working under systems and structures that have not changed since the 1950s.

The existing fire services model has been struggling to keep up with the changing demands of our growing state - with population growth, urbanisation and climate change some of the challenges we face into the future.

The Labor Government had a clear mandate to proceed with our 2018 election commitment to continue to modernise our fire services.

On June 20, 2019, the Victorian Parliament passed the Firefighters' Presumptive Rights Compensation and Fire Services Legislation Amendment (Reform) Act 2019.

And now we have worked with volunteer and career firefighters to deliver on this commitment with the reforms ready to take effect on July 1.Volunteers are the lifeblood of our communities - these reforms are about strengthening the CFA and supporting all of our firefighters who do an incredible job each and every day keeping Victorians safe.Last week, Minister Neville announced that the Andrews Labor Government was providing a $126 million package for the CFA to go towards critical training and equipment.

This money will help the CFA to continue its proud history by investing in its future to create a more robust volunteer firefighting service.

As the local members for Macedon and Bendigo West we will continue to work with the local captains and brigades to support our volunteer firefighters who are committed to protecting our communities.

Cultural centre for region Sherene Clow, Castlemaine I also concur with Jill Loorham ('Real and positive change', Opinions, June 23) and Lynne Kelly ('Celebrate the achievements', Opinions, June 30) and Glenda Fisher ('Record of history', Opinions, June 30) and thank them for their letters and their expanding dialogue about the inclusive retelling of our local history.

I for one would be grateful for a local cultural centre or historic museum that could re-educate me as well as potentially school groups and tourists. Acknowledgement of the pain and suffering of indigenous groups can no longer be ignored as part of our history. If monuments are not to be taken down, then there certainly needs to be many monuments erected to fill in the blanks for all our history has omitted.

A place such as Brambuk in Halls Gap would be wonderful to see in the Mount Alexander Shire. Brambuk affirms and brings life to the history of Aboriginal communities in south-western Victoria and could be a good example or model for us here to draw inspiration from.

Climate change is here Chris Hooper, Castlemaine I have just read an interview with an Italian physicist who has written about contagion. He says COVID-19 is extremely contagious. The Spanish flu took a year or so to take hold but COVID-19 was a couple of months.

There are more of these highly contagious illnesses happening because we're destroying the natural environment by mining and cutting trees including rain forests.

The irony of Mr Morrison standing in front of cut trees to announce funding for Eden Monaro where fires were bad. We're disrupting nature and natural processes and the way we keep animals penned close together and overuse of antibiotics creates perfect environments for pathogens to proliferate.

Having said that, climate change is much more serious than COVID-19. For example, air pollution from burning fossil fuels kills maybe seven million people a year. The Arctic had temperatures in the 30s recently.

COVID-19 has given us a taste of a slower life, cleaner air due to less manufacturing, fewer cars on the road and planes in the air. But as things loosen up people are back in their cars and whizzing around.

We're so busy getting money to pay for all the things we feel we need in this consumerist society and to pay for expensive utilities. We continue to build houses that need lots of heating and cooling, burning fossil fuels to do that.

We've got fluoride and chloride and many other additives in our water, plastic in the creeks, rivers and oceans, air pollution and chemicals in our food. All of this must affect us...we can't necessarily see it happening, though summer tends to bring it home, we need to stop!

The talk is finally about nuclear power, but why do people assume that uranium reactors are the only type of reactor?

There are four kinds of nuclear reactors.

The dangerous uranium breeder reactors were the choice of countries wanting nuclear weapons because those reactors produced weapons-grade plutonium.

Apart from North Korea, most nucleararmed countries have enough weapons and are now looking at a different type of reactor. Countries like India, Germany, Canada, Japan, China, Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Russia, Brazil, UK, and the USA are all in the process of developing liquid fluoride thorium reactors. Why these reactors? LFTRs by the nature of their design can't blow up, can't go into meltdown, they produce one thousandth the waste of a uranium reactor and that waste is non toxic with a much shorter half life. Unlike uranium, thorium is non toxic, only slightly radioactive and very abundant. Australia has the world's largest deposits of thorium.

With so many countries developing this technology why have most Australians not even heard of it? I blame activism. Every time the word nuclear is mentioned these activists just shut down the conversation.

I don't know of an activist yet who knows what they are talking about.

If people want to know more about thorium reactors then Google LFTRs. This is a good place to start.

Farmers looking after their own Arnold based primary producers Carly and Darren Noble of small farm business The Agri-Food Network recently launched a Mental Health Gift Hampers initiative aimed at bringing a smile to the face of fellow central Victorian farmers and small producers doing it tough during COVID. The couple launched the program in late March after close friend and fellow farmer Tim attempted suicide due to the loss of his export contract with the closure of our borders.

"We sent him a hamper and before long we were delivering 20 plus hampers every week to members of our extended community suffering from mental health stress," Carly said.

They have now delivered 118 hampers worth $5900 to members of four shires within central Victoria.

The couple said 50 + businesses had generously jumped on board to assist them to create the hampers with in-kind or financial donations, some of those anonymously.

"With the support of Beyond Blue, we have also assisted 48 business owners by promoting their products and services through our social media sites and list of stakeholders. They have supported us and we in turn are proud to support them," Darren said.

The next batch of 100 hampers will be delivered to farmers over the next eight weeks.

"We would like to say a massive thank you to our volunteers including Helen O'Donoghue, Vanessa Parker, Suzie Jacobs and Justin Rourke for their support, giving up their time to deliver hampers for us and identify members of the community who need help," Darren said.

Beyond Belief New novel inspired by true account

Beyond Belief, a new middle grade novel by renowned children's author Dee White, tells the little-known story of Muslims at a Paris Mosque who risked their lives to keep Jewish children from the Nazi gas chambers.

White's own father's escaped from Nazi-occupied Austria, but lost a number of family members during the Holocaust.

Her family's tragedy led her to discover accounts of Muslims at a Paris Mosque.

The author of more than 20 books, White immediately turned her storytelling instincts to uncover this tale of interfaith cooperation and compassion.

With a Creative Arts Victoria grant, White travelled to Paris, exploring sewers, synagogues and the Grand Mosque where actual events took place, and the site of the old wine market where people were hidden in wine barrels to be smuggled out of the city.

White's research resulted in Beyond Belief, the story of 11-year-old Ruben. Ruben is hiding from the Nazis after thousands of Jewish children disappeared after the Vel D'hiv round up of July 1942.

Ruben's sister is missing and while their parents are desperately searching for her, Ruben is left at the Mosque, under the kindly care of the Imam.

There, Ruben has to learn to pass himself off as a Muslim, while he waits for the infamous Fox to help him get to Spain to be reunited with his family.

One hint of Ruben's true identity and he'll be killed. So will the people trying to save him.

The book, released in the height of the COVID-19 lockdown, has many parallels that resonated with White.

"In these times where we all have to pull together to protect each other, this daring story of truth and courage for children shows us the power of compassion and looking out for each other. And like Ruben, restricting our movements and behaviour for the safety of ourselves and others becomes a necessity. Although our sacrifice is so much smaller, it does give us insight into what others have faced and overcome."

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said this story of interfaith friendship and solidarity was a great book for our times right now, because kids needed to see what their everyday small acts of bravery could actually add up to.

"Kids need to know they can make a difference," she said.

On February 26, Victorian Education Minister, James Merlino announced that the teaching of the Holocaust will now be compulsory in government schools for year nine and 10 students, and Beyond Belief will make a significant contribution.

NAIDOC week postponed

The National NAIDOC Committee has postponed this year's National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee Week celebrations from July to November.

The move was in a bid to protect elders and those in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with chronic health issues from COVID-19 impacts.

NAIDOC Week is normally held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Council will continue to organise local community NAIDOC Week celebrations for November.

Details on November NAIDOC Week celebrations will be provided closer to the time.

RAP report out

Macedon Ranges Council has released its draft Reconciliation Action Plan for comment until July 31.

Its release follows 18 months of development including close consultation with the traditional owners of the country on which Macedon Ranges is located: the Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Peoples.

Mayor, Cr Janet Pearce said the RAP was a first for the council and would build a deeper understanding of reconciliation within the community and show a commitment to supporting improved outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the shire.

The RAP reflects the reconciliation priorities of its traditional owners and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the council is now inviting public feedback on the draft document.

Green light for juniors

Kyneton's junior footballers are excited that they have been told they will be back in competitive action on the weekend of July 18 and 19.

All is being put in place so that players, officials and spectators are as COVID-19 safe as possible with the club's appointed safety officers working through the unexpected season protocols with an under 16s team practice. They will now be applied to the other teams and made sure that all understand what is involved.

The announcement that there will be a junior football season has been greeted with enthusiasm all round by those involved.

"It is going to look a lot different to that of previous years but we are just happy to get our kids back doing what they love," said Kyneton junior football coordinator, Tracey Ryan.

"We are subject to the 'Return to Play' guidelines by the AFL and being well supported by the Bendigo Junior Football League.

"We have appointed a club COVID-19

Safety Officer, as required, who will be ensuring that all the protocols are known and adhered to be all players, parents and officials and that all the required documentation is completed and maintained.

"There will be such measures as attendance registers at training, no sharing of drink bottles, hand sanitiser use by all involved, extra cleaning and sanitising of equipment, physical distancing where possible and many changes around officials and supporters on game day to minimise numbers of adults gathering together," Tracey said.

Under 10 and 12 mixed teams, under 14 boys and girls and under 16 boys teams will all be on the field.

The season will be a shortened one with eight weeks of round matches and two weeks of finals, but all teams this year will make it to the finals so there will be 10 weeks of footy for every junior.

And most of last seasons sponsors have agreed that this year they will be on board to support the club in some capacity.

Soccer kicks off

The Kyneton District Soccer Club juniors were thrilled to finally begin their season on the weekend under strict Covid guidelines.

The Under 12C mixed team played against Strathfieldsaye on Saturday and enjoyed a 7-1 victory. Two goals were scored by both Bailey Meadows and Jacob Hase with Liam Durrant, Cael Kelly and Jacob Dick also scoring.

Meanwhile, in a very cold and wet Castlemaine, our Under 12 girls fought out hard.

Castlemaine started with great intensity and were able to put away a quick goal early.

Kyneton's defence settled, with Zara Hooppell and Sienna Scott using their experience to control the backline and drive the ball forward. Mischa Bennington and Amber Doolan provided great support in defence in their first game in under 12s.

As new players Mila Pereira, Wynta Callander and Eva Cranshaw developed their confidence throughout the game, they made some fantastic drives forward, putting pressure on the Castlemaine defence. Maggie Ellis and Simone Durrant worked extremely hard through the mid-field, supporting both the defence and the forward line. Late in the first half Sunday Jones took advantage

of a loose ball with a fantastic strike, taking Kyneton into the break trailing 2-1.

Kyneton increased their intensity in the second half, with Velvet Mancuso (pictured) and Monique Tusa using their speed and great ball control along the wings to provide more chances at goal.

Castlemaine also picked up their intensity, with their experienced players managing to convert their chances into goal. Despite some fantastic work by Tess Cockerall at Goal Keeper, the final score Castlemaine 4 Kyneton 1.

The game was played with positivity and good sportsmanship, supporting each other and the opposition. Although there was no shaking hands, the girls did line up for a congratulatory 'foot tap', with big smiles all round.

A great first game back, and lots of promising signs.

Other results were: Under 14 Mixed: Golden City 5 - Kyneton 4 Under 14 Girls: Castlemaine 3 - Kyneton 1 Under 16 Mixed: Golden City 10 - Kyneton 3 It was wonderful to see the teams wearing their new kit. Special thanks to all the sponsors.

Monthly medal winners at Woodend and Trentham golf clubs each had four shots to spare from their closest rival on Saturday.

Scott Barker took out Woodend's medal with a fine 87-26-61, ahead of Mick Fitzpatrick 82-17-65 and James O'Brien 80-15-65.

At Trentham, a field of 67 hit off, and Darrin McLean handled the conditions with ease to take out the medal and Bgrade with 83-17-66.

A-grade went to Keith Webster 83-1271 on a countback from Colin Wilson and Alan Snowden, while Peter Speakman topped C-grade with 92-22-70.

Peter McMenamin and Simon Overden contest the final of the singles knockout event this Saturday.

Kyneton golf Saturday's monthly medal resulted in a tie between Namik Akkurt and Paul Moore, and they will play-off in the next medal round.

Scott Murphy won A-grade with 82-1072 on a countback from Jason McClure 81-9-72; B-grade: Namik Akkurt 82-12-70 from Noel Alldis 87-15-72. C-grade: Paul Moore 97-27-70 from Russell Bramich 100-26-74.

Romsey golf Romsey golfers encountered soft fairways and furry greens, plus the risk of plugged balls, and were pleased to reach the clubhouse on a cool Saturday afternoon.

Ryan Davies won the stableford with 37 points (from 24 handicap), from Mitchell Clement 36 (10) and Davie Kenney 34 (22).

Rob Rea reached the final of the John Laing Shield by eliminating Anthony Lakey 5/4, and will play the winner of the Andrew Laing v Ryan Davies semi-final.

Bendigo Football Netball League has cancelled the 2020 senior football and netball seasons.

Covid claims more club play

Another football league has fallen victim to COVID-19.

Bendigo Football Netball League announced on Wednesday night that it had cancelled the 2020 senior football and netball seasons.

The decision was made in consultation with all BFNL member clubs including Kyneton and Castlemaine. Mid last week Gisborne announced it would not play a 2020 season due to the pandemic and the fact that a number of its players and officials either lived or worked in the current COVID-19 hotspots.

However, at this stage the league still plans for competitions for under 18 footballers and 17 and under netballers. They are governed by a different state government protocols to senior players.

The BFNL said in its official announce-

ment of the cancellation that as well as community health safety, the continued uncertainty and challenges relating to clubs being able to host and manage crowds for senior competitions also added to its decision.

The impact safety requirements would have on the clubs' volunteers base and financial impact on the league and individual clubs were also taken into consideration.

"The Bendigo FNL has remained steadfast in keeping all options open as long as possible as we continued exploring every opportunity to return to the ovals and courts in 2020, provided we could do so in a safe, achievable and sustainable manner," league manager Cameron Tomlins said.

Community safety and wellbeing has

remained paramount to our decision making process, however together with our clubs, the BFNL have been committed to exhausting every possibility to enable an opportunity to participate and compete in 2020, based on the strong appetite of our clubs and players to do so.

"Levels of COVID-19 impact are being felt differently across each respective club, though most clubs have now experienced a significant and comparable reduction of income already in regular revenue streams such as sponsorship due to the overall effect on local business, and reductions to club membership and minimal regular fundraising and hospitality opportunities," Tomlins said.

The Riddell and Maryborough leagues also earlier announced their senior 2020 season were no more.

RDFNL scraps seniors, juniors Bill West The Riddell District Football League board, in conjunction with a majority of the league's junior clubs, decided to cancel all of the junior competitions for 2020 last week.

Disturbing news in the previous 48 hours that COVID-19 community transmission cases have infiltrated two schools within the league's southern boundaries hastened the decision.

Realistically, the league had no option and the unprecedented decision has generally been applauded across sporting and community circles.

The league's senior competition had been cancelled earlier in the week - Romsey had already declared it would not participate -- but there had been high hopes a junior football and netball competition could be held when it became safe to do so.

The two schools - one in Sunbury and the other in Melton - were forced to close and undergo deep cleaning.

The league's commitment to staging junior matches could not be sustained with the knowledge that it was now not safe to proceed.

It was agreed it is in the best interests of the safety of the community, junior players, officials, volunteers and families to cancel the junior season.

The league thanks all junior players, officials and clubs for their efforts this year, and look forward getting all the boys and girls back on the footy fields and netball courts in 2021.

Some golf clubs in the district are anticipating more patronage in the next few months from footballers who are at "loose ends" and are looking to still be involved in some sporting activity.

Tayla steals the show Bill West

Kyneton trainer George Osborne was full of praise for apprentice Tayla Childs after she landed her first career winner aboard his stable star Happy Reine on Friday at Bendigo.

"It's all about Tayla today," Osborne said, predicting the 24-year-old would certainly make her mark in the sport, where her father Greg was a long-time champion rider and her twin brother Jordan is well entrenched as a top jockey.

Reine Happy led virtually all the way in the 1300m Benchmark 64 RMBL Investments Rising Stars Handicap to notch up his 12th win from 57 starts, and carry earnings to $214,465.

Not a bad return for a galloper Osborne purchased for $8000 at the Adelaide yearling sales in 2013.

The eight-year-old is racing in ultra-consistent form, and Osborne said "Happy" is an ideal horse for young riders. He is also something of a track specialist at Bendigo.

Reine Happy likes to lead in his races, and Tayla Childs had ridden him into second place at Donald at his previous start on July 13.

ried 59.5kg on Friday. It was Childs' 13th race ride and she made every post a winner, kicking clear in the straight and holding off fast-finishing favourite Jake's Folly.

"It was fantastic and I'm very happy for her," Osborne said.

Tayla has been riding horses from a very young age, and knew all about racing as her father who came from New Zealand rode for 31 years across six different countries (mainly in Australia) and notched up over 2100 winners.

He won two Cox Plates on the mighty mare Sunline, two Caulfield Cups, nine Oaks and six Derbys, with 72 Group 1 victories overall.

Tayla was at university studying for a teaching degree in 2015.

She had considered becoming a jockey but recognised it would be tough to break into a largely male-dominated sport.

Then Michelle Payne rode 100/1 chance Prince of Penzance to victory in the 2015 Melbourne Cup, and Tayla became inspired by this feat to give race riding a fair dinkum go.

It has not been easy, with a shattered kneecap in a trackwork fall putting her out of the saddle for eight months. Back and leg injuries were sustained in another mishap on her return.

Perseverance paid off, and after apprentices' school where riders must ride in at least 20 trials before stewards, Tayla joined John Moloney's stable earlier this year and finished second at her first race ride.

Tayla hopes to get plenty of rides during the winter as a claiming apprentice, and described her breakthrough win on Reine Happy as "awesome".

Kyneton galloper impressive at Echuca Bill West

Kyneton galloper Eastern Pegasus won in fine style at Echuca on Saturday, breaking a run of "outs" dating back to May 5, 2019.

The six-year-old provided George Osborne with his 41st win of the season, and he occupies 20th position on the Victorian trainers' premiership list. The Osborne stable turned out 43 winners in 2019-20.

Eastern Pegasus put the writing on the wall with a close fourth over 1000m at Echuca on June 13, and apprentice Matthew Cartwright soon him travelling well in the Border Inn 0-58 Handicap over 1200m on Saturday.

Cartwright saved ground in the run and dashed the $4.20 chance clear in the straight to win comfortably from the fast finishing Dash To The Bar. It was the fifth career win for Eastern Pegasus from 36 starts, with prizemoney now totalling $114,149.
