First festival out the gate Eve Lamb

Castlemaine Botanical Gardens sets the scene for this evening's Castlemaine State Festival program launch - and what a festival it promises to be.

The result of clever reformatting to cater for vagaries tossed up by COVID, CSF 2021 has been expanded by seven days and makes ample use of outdoor venues to carefully manage audience numbers and afford safe spacing.

While there will be at least 25 per cent fewer tickets to snap up than in previous years, the lengthened timeframe - and expansion into Bendigo - has director Glyn Roberts anticipating just as much, if not greater, visitation will flow.

"We are essentially the state's first major arts festival out the gate for 2021," the busy festival director told the Express.

With plenty of pent-up demand from live arts and culture-starved Victorians likely to be unleashed, Glyn believes this year's festival, happening March 19-April 4, will serve something of a "canary in the mineshaft" for the return of live audiences to arts and cultural events.

The team behind the celebrated biennial event are extending an open invitation to get along to this evening's public launch at 6pm for a sneak peek at what's in store on a keenly anticipated program.

Those who attend this evening's launch will get to hear first hand from festival director Glyn Roberts - and enjoy a performance from sibling duo The Maes.

The diverse festival program spans visual arts, live music and performance, special guest talks and workshops, and begins Friday March 19 with a free event featuring Ajak Kwai and the Bendigo South Sudanese Women's Ensemble.

The emphasis on outdoor venues will take audiences to some memorable locales from iconic local swimming hole, The Res, to Castlemaine's grand old Buda historical House and Garden, town hall, Western Reserve and botanical gardens.

Partnering with Bendigo venues in a debut move that further caters for the need to carefully manage numbers, this year's festival also features special events at The Capital, Bendigo Art Gallery and Ulumbarra Theatre.

Tickets go online from today at castlemainefestival.com.au while a physical box office will also operate from the festival's Castlemaine headquarters at the Goods Shed.

Castlemaine's inspirational School Strike 4 Climate youth activists feature as part of a new film, Wild Things, set to make its Victorian premiere at Castlemaine's own Theatre Royal on Thursday January 28.

Driver trapped

A woman was trapped in her vehicle after a collision with an empty cattle truck on the Calder Freeway at Taradale last Monday evening.

The sedan collided with the rear of the truck travelling up a hill in the Melbourne-bound lanes, before being ricocheted into the wire rope barriers about 6.40pm.

The barriers and the damage from the impact with the truck prevented the driver from escaping the vehicle until passers-by assisted her from wreckage.

Police, ambulance and CFA brigades from Taradale, Elphinstone and Malmsbury were quickly on the scene and an SES rescue crew from Castlemaine attended but was not needed.

The driver was treated by paramedics at the scene and conveyed to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. One lane on the freeway was closed for about an hour while the vehicle was extricated from the barriers and towed away.

Firearms unit

Western Reserve fence replacement

Works will soon begin to replace the perimeter fence at Western Reserve in Castlemaine along Forest and Hargraves streets. The project will take around one week to complete, with minimal impact on user groups.

The project is funded by the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

Bike workshops for year sevens

Council is partnering with Healthy Heart of Victoria and Bike Bendigo to deliver two bike workshops for students heading to high school. Australia Day – Survival Day

A new Illicit Firearms Unit within Victoria Police has been set up to prevent firearms getting into the wrong hands.

The unit includes a team of 22 experienced investigators who will focus on investigating the manufacturing and trafficking of illicit firearms, and work to proactively stop this criminal activity in its tracks, including that linked to organised crime groups and gangs.

The team will work closely with enforcement agencies across Australia and monitor a range of investigations and incidents.

In 2017, 10 dedicated detectives were allocated to the Firearms Investigation Teams within the Victoria Police's Armed Crime Squad, with a current annual investment of $1.5 million. An additional 12 positions have been added to enable the establishment of this dedicated Illicit Firearms Unit, led by a Detective Inspector and Detective Senior Sergeant.

The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission estimates that there are more than 260,000 firearms in the illicit firearms market across Australia.

In 2020, there were nine fatal shootings and 41 non-fatal shootings resulting in injury. Last year, police across Victoria also seized more than 770 firearms.

Since May 2018, Victoria Police has served 669 Firearms Prohibitions Orders that are currently active.

Miracle escape from truck crash

Elphinstone Fire Brigade captain Andy Chapman said the incident was made more dangerous by drivers not paying attention and not respecting red and blue flashing lights.

"When we arrived we couldn't see what had happened, the truck was 50-foot below in the creek," he told the Express.

"I heard a person yell out and shone my torch down to the creek and I could see his face sticking out of the cabin.

"Up above, one car came through and hit the Armco railing laying in the middle of the road and got airborne.

"The next bloke seconds after that came along and swerved to the left and then skidded round to the right, and then the next car came round and swerved.

"People have got to start reading the fact that red and blue lights mean slow down.

"It was a miracle there was not another prang," he said.

A driver had a miraculous escape after his truck collided with a bridge pylon on the Calder Freeway at Taradale last Wednesday morning, sending it careering off the bridge in a 20-metre fall to a creek bed below.

The impact of the crash folded the cabin under the trailer and pinned the driver by his legs. He remained conscious and was able to call for help as passers-by noticed debris on the freeway and stopped to investigate.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 5.30am.

The Kangaroo Flat man, aged in his 30s, was extricated and flown by air ambulance to Royal Melbourne Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The north-bound lanes of the freeway were closed to traffic until 3pm the following day as a crane was called in to haul the truck out of the ravine and clear the scene.

Trail bike riders have been flocking to forest, parks and reserves across regional Victoria to enjoy the great outdoors. Forest Fire Management Victoria district manager Adrian Parker said it was important for riders to remember that they must be licensed, have a registered bike and stick to formed roads and vehicle tracks to protect the environment.

"We want all trail bike riders to stay safe. When you head out for a ride, always ride with a buddy, let someone know where you're going, and it's a good idea to carry a personal locator beacon or phone to call for help in an emergency," Mr Parker said.

"Riding off-road has a significant impact on the environment by causing soil erosion and damage to native vegetation.

"Riders should reduce their speed when they come across wildlife, recreation areas such as campsites and picnic areas and when they come across other forest users."

The Conservation Regulator and FFMVic conduct regular patrols in our forests and issue on-the-spot fines for off-road vehicle use.

Riders who stray off-road risk receiving a fine of $165, while damaging, disturbing or destroying wildlife habitat carries a maximum fine of more than $8000.

Seeds of kindness

The Express recently shared the story of two local youngsters who were left devastated after someone stole eight plants and the proceeds from their roadside stall at Harcourt North just before Christmas.

The story about Harper and Quinn Vance, who had initially set up their little stall to catch traffic on the way to Mount Alexander during the COVID lockdown and to make bit of pocket money, really struck a chord with our readers.

So much so that a generous local couple, Gerry and Lynne from the Maldon region, wanted to set things right and kindly made contact

with the Express to arrange the delivery of two cards to our Castlemaine office containing $35 each to brighten the day of the hard-working local sisters.

Quinn and Harper's proud mum Stacey Kelly said her girls were shocked and disappointed when the succulent plants they had learned to carefully cultivate and tend with the support of their grandmother were stolen, but the generous gift from the local 'Good Samaritans' had delighted the girls and restored their faith in community.

"The girls have been really touched by the

outpouring of support they have received from well-wishers since the story ran," Stacey said.

"They have had some lovely notes of support from community members and classmates and this really took the cake. It absolutely made their day. They were smiling from ear to ear."

Gerry said he was impressed by the girls' enterprising spirit and did not want to see them deterred by the unfortunate incident.

"It's wonderful what they are doing and it will stand them in good stead for the future. We hope our little gift will encourage them not to give up and to keep pushing forward," he said.

Suspicious fires spark firebug fear Two suspicious fires that ignited on the side of the Calder Freeway at Taradale in the past week have sparked fears a firebug may be active in the area.

A large number of resources turned out to a fire called in about 12.45pm on Saturday with brigades from Taradale, Malmsbury, Kyneton, Chewton, Elphinstone, Harcourt and Castlemaine supported by crews from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and air support from Bendigo.

Taradale 1st lieutenant and incident controller Adam Paine said the swift response of brigades managed to contain the blaze to about two hectares.

“With the support of our neighbouring

brigades we were able to get the fire under control before it could become a much bigger scenario,” Lt Paine said.

Lt Paine said two fire investigators attended the scene but could not determine a cause for the fire.

“People should be vigilant on the roads and look out for anything suspicious just in case there is a firebug in the area,” he said.

“They should also make sure they have their own fire plans in place.”

A second fire that ignited on the side of the freeway at Taradale on Sunday January 10 was also deemed suspicious.

Anyone with information in relation to either fire is urged to contact local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Acting managing director Danny McLean said the organisation's Customer Support Team would be able to help with most enquiries but in line with Victorian Government restrictions a limited number of staff would be onsite.

"To ensure a safe environment for both customers and our staff we encourage customers to call 1300 363 200 in the first instance to see in their enquiry can be resolved over the phone or to make an appointment with the relevant team member," Mr McLean said.

"There won't be any members of Land Development Team onsite and if customers have an enquiry on asset locations or connecting a property we can arrange a follow up phone call.

CCF director Azzy Jay said the CFF committee was pleased to announce the theme 'REACTIVATE' and was planning a full and fun program of art, music and performance in venues in and around Castlemaine, which will take place from March 19 through to April 4.

"A significant challenge has been to consider and plan for how art participation can be achieved in a COVIDSafe environment. We are not scared of a challenge and REACTIVATE the Streetscape is our answer!" Azzy said.

REACTIVATE the Streetscape is a major feature of the CFF 2021 program - a visual arts feast of art installations in local business windows presented as an inclusive and accessible walking/riding tour of Castlemaine that audiences can visit day or night for the duration of the festival, with the town centre coming alive with art windows, performance installations, roving street performers and live music.

"We have also secured some

funding to REACTIVATE the Shire between January and March 2021 through a series of paid busking style performances for artists and performers whose income has been hit by COVID-19," Azzy said.

This project is funded by the state government's Community Activation and Social Isolation Initiative and Mount Alexander Shire Council, and aims to build social connections and address social isolation due to COVID-19.

Double the money Prices of cattle were double those of last year at the 2021 Kyneton Annual Weaner sale held last Wednesday making it a sellers' delight as has been the case in livestock markets now for months.

The annual cattle sale was held in hot conditions with a large crowd of buyers in attendance coming from all parts of the state. That, plus strong local support, made the day very busy.

Visiting agents had orders to fill and a large numbers of stock were consigned to Gippsland, Goulburn and Tamworth and other areas such as Bendigo, Ballarat, Kilmore and Warrnambool.

Kyneton agents congratulated vendors for the quality of their stock and for their presentation with many comments that the first lane of cattle were some of the best seen at a Kyneton sale. They also thanked Macedon Ranges Shire for its ongoing support of the yards. The shire was represented at this important feature sale by mayor Jennifer Anderson, deputy mayor Mark Ridgeway, Cr Bill West and acting CEO John Nevins.

The importance of the sale was also the cause for an award for the best presented pen of cattle to be given.

The Best Pen of Steers, sponsored by Glendan Park, carried a $1000 voucher to either be spent at the sale or within the next 12 months. It went to pen number five, the day's top sellers, on account of local Helen Bennett for 13 angus steers at 431kg/4.67c/kg or $2015 per head and sold by Elders Kyneton.

Top priced heifers were six angus sold

on account of PC & MC Bruton. They averaged 380kg a head and sold for 4.71c/kg or $1790.

Total number of heifers yarded was 470 and there were 632 steers adding up to a $1.9 million turnover of stock.

Copper cable stolen

A section of a copper cable power supply line to the Bullarto mobile phone tower was stolen last week.

Police, Powercor and Telstra were alerted, and the tower is functional again.

About 130 metres of cable was removed.

Investigations are continuing.

Bumper weekend in store Mount Alexander Shire Council will host an Australia Day - Survival Day community event at Victory Park next Tuesday January 26.

The event will kick off at 10am and run through to 12pm. The event will feature music from the Castlemaine Highland Pipe Band.

Skateboarding comp Saturday Local skateboard riders of all ages are encouraged to get involved in a national competition being held at Castlemaine Skate Park this Saturday January 23.

The regional heat is part of the Australian Skate Park League series, which is a national grass-roots skateboard, scoot and BMX competition in Australia.

There will also be free parkour workshops running throughout the day, as well as a barbecue and refreshments available.

Mount Alexander Shire Council's youth activities officer Jodie Hearn said the event was a chance to showcase the talent of the region's young riders.

"Whether you're new to the sport or an experienced rider, I'd encourage you to come along and be part of the day," Ms Hearn said.

Agriculture Victoria livestock welfare compliance program manager Dr Rachael Holmes said it was important that all parties across the livestock supply chain were aware of their obligations when transporting livestock.

"It is the responsibility of each person in charge of the animal at each step of the supply chain, to make that assessment, and to make appropriate arrangements for the care, treatment or humane destruction of any animals that are deemed to be unfit for transportation," Dr Holmes said.

Abattoirs and saleyards also have a duty of care to the livestock they receive. If the welfare of received livestock is compromised, these livestock will be managed according to policy and procedures, which may include reporting to the department for investigation.

Transporters can face infringement penalties of up to $495 or prosecution for offences if animals are not fit for transport.

Macedon Ranges, Mount Alexander and Hepburn Shire Councils will each receive $146,400 to get ready for emergencies thanks to the Victorian Government's Municipal Emergency Resourcing Program.

Budget 2020 has provided an extra $1 million for the program, which helps Victoria's 64 rural, regional and outer-metropolitan councils with the costs of emergency planning, bringing the total funding available to $5.6 million.

Program funding can be used for a wide variety of different emergency planning work.

Councils often use the funding to appoint an emergency management position, with some councils collaborating with their neighbours to fund a shared specialist position.

Jim Coombe was surrounded by many members of his family, including several great grandchildren, for his 90th birthday.

Mia Mia's most senior citizen, Jim Coombe, celebrated his 90th birthday last week, 100 years after his father returned from World War I and took up the government's offer of a 300-acre piece of farmland in Valley Road, Mia Mia. The returned soldier, Clarrie Coombe, was originally from Gippsland and was hoping the government would offer him some lush green Gippsland dairying country.

He was disappointed to end up with 300 acres of central Victoria basalt boulders but he made the most of it and 100 years on, half of the land is still in the hands of the family.

Most people think the government gave the land to the soldier settlers, but Jim says that was not the case.

"The government gave them loans to pay off over a number of years," Jim said, "but the deal wasn't really that good. The only people who survived were the ones who refinanced through the banks."

The farm was scarcely big enough to support one family, let alone Jim and

his elder sisters and their families, so Jim honed his mechanical skills and ran the Redesdale Garage for a number of years, as well as looking after the roads for the local shire.

Eventually, with five daughters to feed, he moved north to Tatura to grow lucerne, and later to Healesville to drive buses for McKenzie's bus lines.

As he was about to retire from the Healesville job, his eldest sister and her husband, who had taken on the family farm, were also retiring and moving into Kyneton. They suggested Jim move back to Mia Mia and look after the farm. So he has been back at his birthplace for almost 20 years.

On his birthday Jim was surrounded by many members of his family, including several great grandchildren.

New project to warm homes

Recycling funds

A new funding stream is available to support Victoria's transition to a circular economy by encouraging the development of grassroots local solutions for waste avoidance, repair and reuse of goods, and correct recycling of materials.

The Recycling Victoria Communities Fund provides more than $5.4 million over four years for social enterprises, not-forprofits, community organisations and charities to collaborate and explore smarter ways of using resources and materials in their local area.

Funded organisations will receive grants of between $25,000 and $250,000 for projects to increase reuse, repair and share opportunities in their communities.

Projects like repair sheds, communal gardens, tool libraries and skills workshops will inspire Victorians to look at the resources available to them in a new way and challenge their perceptions of waste and its value.

The funds are offered through Recycling Victoria, the Victorian Government's 10year, $380 million action plan and investment that will transform the state's recycling sector, create thousands of jobs and set Victoria up for a more sustainable future.

Interested are encouraged to attend an online information session at 2pm on Tuesday, February 9.Register to attend via Eventbrite. Applications close March 19.

Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group's Healthy Homes Project aims to alleviate the many disadvantages suffered by low-income families living in cold, substandard housing by improving the overall energy efficiency of up to 15 homes in the Macedon Ranges.

The Australian Council of Social Services has identified that people on low incomes tend to live in less energy efficient housing and are more likely to operate inefficient appliances, resulting in higher energy costs and leading to adverse health and wellbeing impacts.

A pilot study, conducted in the Macedon Ranges, demonstrated that a 30 per cent reduction in energy usage is achievable by implementing a number of simple home improvements. The associated improvements in indoor temperatures also provided significant comfort and wellbeing benefits.

Local historians and community groups are being encouraged to apply for a share in $350,000 to help preserve, record and share the wider state's rich history.

The Local History Grants Program is now accepting applications for up to $15,000 per project, managed by Public Record Office Victoria.

A wealth of local groups dedicated to conserving the region's past now have until March 9 to apply for funding via prov.vic.gov. au.

"We can't wait to see this year's history projects and I encourage community groups and budding historians across Victoria to go online and apply for a grant," the state's minister for government services Danny Pearson said.

Victoria's Public Record Office director Justine Heazlewood said a wide diversity of projects were eligible to clinch a grant.

"We encourage community groups considering an upcoming history or anniversary project - from sports clubs to schools and historical societies - to apply for a grant of up $15,000 as part of the Local History Grants Program," she said.

I have many objections to the proposed service centre in Kyneton including the “loss of innocence” that would flow from big commerce tainting our charmingly intact and historic town, the possibility of patronage and job losses from our existing small businesses and the prospect of garish, neon monstrosities (also known as signage) looming over much of Kyneton.

But it is the signs that worry me most.

The McDonalds proposal, currently advertised on the MRSC website, shows a sign 10 metres high “to be confirmed” (not a good sign?). I am not suggesting such will be the case with McDonalds but there are precedents for roadside businesses claiming that their pylon signs need to be taller so that motorists have time to change lanes. Clearly that has been proven not to be true by the excellent example set by the Bob Jane service centre - there are no pylon signs but, instead, major tenants such as McDonalds, KFC and BP are advertised at the base of four successive VicRoads signs leading up to the off-ramp.

A contour map of Kyneton shows that Mollison Street is only a few metres above the level of the proposed service centre.

So, as trees and houses come and go, do we really want a horizon ruined by hideous signs, perhaps even visible from the primary school?

I hope council rejects the entire application but, at the very least, ensures that signs are no more than seven metres high.

Forget satanic mills, I have dark dreams of brightly lit obscenities towering above us, smirking and mocking the town they have just soiled and pillaged.

I am joining the local voices who don't want a McDonalds or a fourth petrol station here in Kyneton.

There is a planning application seeking to develop land, along the precious Post Office Creek, identified in the Kyneton Structure Plan as a 'gateway' to Kyneton.

What an absolute assault on the environment and town to have this kind of construction at a significant thoroughfare.

Our family, along with innumerable tourists and residents, will travel along Edgecombe Road to enter/exit the town, how deflating to know the first and last thing they will see of Kyneton will be those 'golden arches'.

The application currently impacts on Taungurung land assessed as being High for archeological, spiritual and contemporary/social significance. It currently exceeds the 100m2 allowable lease area for food and drink, and allows its signage to be viewed from the Calder Freeway importantly the massive 'pylon sign' that we know so well to tower with the golden arches is said not to form part of this application because its height is unresolved, but its location on the map is still marked as being on Edgecombe Road... A glaring omission from my view is the legality of the development being so close to the Rural Living Zone area - is it too close to future residents?

I love that locals are getting together to help fight for the Kyneton we know and love, and not let multinational franchises take over. There are growing number of local businesses helping youth gain meaningful employment without selling out to profit-driven and unhealthy organisations like McDonalds.

Have you seen the plans for the development for the corner of Pipers Creek Road and Edgecombe Road? Is anyone else concerned?

I’m already copping that whiff of fat sizzling on the evening breeze. I can already feel the grease. Burger wrappers and plastic straws are already coagulating and rolling around on our nature strips.

The golden arches loom.

Okay, yeah - an exaggeration, but, hey, is this really what we want for our town?

There are some concerns that come up for me immediately: - The potential threats to the profitability of other local cafes and businesses when anyone can pull in to a ‘one-stop shop’.

- This kind of development will undermine the historic character of Kyneton.

It’s this aesthetic that draws people to the town to visit and live.

- The potential for taking advantage of young workers. McDonalds allegedly has a chequered past relating to wages and working conditions.

- It’s common knowledge that McDonalds offerings have very little nutritional value. By allowing this development to go through, aren’t we encouraging unhealthy food choices?

- We’ve all driven past McDonalds restaurants on the freeway. There is always rubbish everywhere. McDonalds still uses single-use plastic straws and cutlery.

Their takeaway coffee cups and post-mix cups are lined with polyethylene (plastic).

I live and work in Kyneton.

If I’m so desperate for a McDonalds fix, I’m more than happy to drive to Gisborne.

I’m lodging an objection letter to council. I encourage you to do the same.

A path forward James Mack and John Carruthers, Castlemaine As Mount Alexander Animal Welfare members, and participants in a workinggroup that provided MAAW’s committee with a detailed 31-page report on the viability of a community vet clinic, we were surprised to learn that the current committee had resolved to reject a $92K government grant.

Knowing the turbulent state of the committee, the decision itself did not come as a surprise, but the furtive and perfunctory medium of the disclosure to the community via public advertisement did.

The other surprise was the errors and half-truths put forward.

There is no basis to claim that $25K of start-up expenditure would fall outside the grant or hiring an “executive manager” was “central” to the project’s success or that trained staff would be unavailable when assurances had been obtained from local vets that contract staff could be all but guaranteed with proper planning.

The tone contrasted sharply with the methodical analysis contained in our report and our conclusion that a clinic was viable, if risks were managed sensibly and with forward planning.

It is common knowledge that MAAW’s membership has been riven by recrimination, and there is a committee seemingly at war with almost half its members, staff and volunteers. Perhaps with a civil war on its hands, the committee is unable to manage its operations and leave some room for growth (which is the management equivalent of being able to walk and chew gum at the same time).

With a combined five decades’ management and consulting experience we offered our help to the committee because we wanted to demonstrate that there was a path forward through professional, respectful and transparent collaboration.

We pledged our report would be provided pro bono and confidentially, in return for the commitment that it would be made public to members. The community is still waiting for the committee to cooperate.

Now for the controversial parts T Barnes, Kyneton Re: The proposed 24/7 McDonalds restaurant with drive through and 24/7 service station/truck stop for Edgecombe Road, Kyneton.

McDonald’s 24/7 restaurants generally attract 2000-plus customers daily. This will cause major traffic congestion along what is already a danger zone in Edgecombe Road. There is a history of several accidents in this vicinity of Edgecombe Road with vehicles entering from side roads colliding with trucks and other vehicles.

Add to this a large number of customers accessing the 24/7 service station/truck stop and then add again a high volume of customer traffic of the proposed Bunnings store operating seven days a week, 6.30am to 9pm Mon to Fri and 7am to 7pm Sat and Sun. All together a huge volume of daily traffic causing congestion and dangerous conditions for all vehicles.

There is also the added danger of the T intersection with Saleyards and Edgecombe Roads in close proximity to the entrance/exit of the proposed Bunnings store as well.

The poor choice of location will have a huge impact on vehicles using Edgecombe Road and Edgecombe Street for access to the on and off ramps to the Calder Freeway and create considerable risk of traffic accidents and makes the proposed site unsuitable. Safety and wellbeing of the community should be paramount.

In my opinion, I believe the site location creates unacceptable levels of danger for all drivers and is therefore a totally unsuitable site for such developments. For this reason, the proposed development plans should be rejected.

I urge all residents to carefully consider the genuine risks and dangers these developments in the proposed location will create, how they will enhance or detract and impact the community rural lifestyle economically, on existing local businesses, socially and environmentally.

Take the plunge Hans Paas, Castlemaine I would like to second the sentiments of Yvette Berkeley (‘Please reconsider’, Opinions, January 12).

Having initiated such a community vet service in Williamstown in the 1980s, I know what a terrific contribution this would make to animal health in our community.

I have been amazed at how quickly MAAW has become financially sustainable, has expanded and provides a much better service than the RSPCA ever did. Their Op Shop is big business and the shelter is second to none.

When I proposed a community vet for the then City of Williamstown all those years ago some of the older members of the committee were reluctant because of fears “we’ll go broke”, but once it was up and running it actually attracted even more community support and blossomed.

I would encourage the committee of MAAW to take the plunge in the knowledge that this community will back them to the hilt because this is what MAAW is all about -- providing caring animal welfare and they are very good at it.

Nest box monitoring to resume Connecting Country is set to resume its nest box monitoring program in the coming months, after COVID-19 restrictions disrupted dedicated volunteers from planned monitoring during 2020.

Connecting Country began the program in 2010, and has installed more than 450 nest boxes on private and public land across the Mount Alexander region.

The nest boxes have been designed specifically for use by the threatened brushtailed phascogale (also known as the tuan), which is a nocturnal hollow-dependent marsupial that occurs in the local area. The nest boxes provide supplementary nesting spots for phascogales and other native animals such as the sugar glider (also known as Krefft's glider), especially where natural nesting hollows are limited.

"We now have a large number of nest boxes on private and public land, located systematically across the landscape to allow scientific analysis of the brush-tailed phascogale's distribution," Connecting Country's monitoring coordinator Jess Lawton said.

"Our nest boxes were monitored in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018, providing a significant volume of valuable data.

"We missed 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so we're looking forward to getting out there and seeing how our phascogales and sugar gliders are going."

Brush-tailed phascogales were once widespread across Victoria. Unfortunately, habitat destruction and introduced predators mean their range is now severely reduced and fragmented.

der the Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988, and considered vulnerable to localised extinction.

A lack of old trees with nesting hollows is likely to limit recovery of this hollowdependent species. Connecting Country's nest boxes are now up to 10 years old.

A grant from the Wettenhall Environment Trust in 2019 allowed Connecting Country to conduct some much-needed maintenance, and repair or replace existing nest boxes as required. This helps maintain the availability of nesting habitat for phascogales, and allow consistent data collection into the future.

Local landholders and volunteers are actively involved, invested and empowered through the nest box monitoring program, connecting the community with nature and our local landscape.

"We typically have 15-20 volunteers assist us with nest box monitoring each season, plus a team of four volunteers who help manage our data," Jess said.

"One of the most valuable aspects of community-led monitoring is that we've been able to report back to private landholders about what we've detected on their properties. This has inspired landholders to find more ways to look after the wildlife on their properties."

A key aspect of Connecting Country's monitoring program is that the data is publicly shared via the Victoria Biodiversity Atlas, the state government's database for wildlife. This means public land managers, decision makers and the community have up-to-date information about where threatened wildlife are living.

The Fossick in the Goldfields antique and collectables fair returns to the Campbells Creek Community Centre this weekend, January 23 and 24.

The popular annual event is now in its fourth year and will feature stallholders from across Victoria and South Australia with a wide array of antiques and collectables including collectable tins, Australian pottery, highquality glassware, kitchenalia, furniture and more.

The Express caught up with fair coordinator Brian Owens to chat about what visitors could expect at this year's event.

Mr Owens said the fair always featured a treasure trove of rarities waiting to be discovered.

"Among the items to feature will be a 1920s microphone used in radio which was unearthed by my colleague Ken Smith," he said.

"The microphone is housed in a Blackwood case, which probably indicates it is Australian made. One can only guess the number of radio personalities or performers that may have utilised

the microphone in its heyday!"

The antique buffs also have another unique piece that is sure to 'reel' in the fisherman in the region - a rare Butler spinning reel.

"The Butler reels were manufactured by the small Box Hill based company in the 1950s and there are very few examples of the side cast reel in existence today," Mr Owens said.

The fair has been steadily growing each year and in 2021 it's anticipated about 100 stalls will feature.

"There will be something for everyone with items sure to intrigue and delight the most avid collector," Mr Owens said.

The Fossick in the Goldfields event will run from 8am to 5pm on Saturday and 9am to 2pm on Sunday.

The COVIDSafe event will all be held entirely outdoors and visitors will be required to sign in and maintain social distancing.

Admission is just $5.

Applefest to make a welcome return

Our world is changing, but the joys of living in the Harcourt Valley only seem to get better.

Since its beginnings 28 years ago, Harcourt Applefest has never been static. Some activities have been replaced with exciting new ones at new venues.

The program has always moved with the times and responded to peoples' interests.

Spokesperson George Milford said this year's month-long, multi-venue event would showcase the best that Harcourt could offer while ensuring a COVIDSafe event.

"The traditional Applefest Saturday Festival will focus on children's activities around the brand new Stanley Park play space and the stalls around the ANA Hall will focus on food and culture," Mr Milford said.

The popular Art Show will be extended over two weekends.

Other aspects of the festival include on-site experiences at Victorian Miniature Railway and at winery/cidery cellar doors throughout the valley.

The popular Granite House Tour highlights a unique feature of the district. Also of great excite-

ment is the Indigenous Star Gazing.

"It is intended that all of these activities will be modestly priced, ticketed events, available to be pre-booked online," Mr Milford said.

"This is because the organisers must be aware of numbers attending and record contact details in keeping with public health directions. There can still be registration at the gate on the day."

The program for Harcourt Applefest 2021 is now being drafted with the support of venue proprietors from the length and breadth of the Valley.

"The draft program offers lots of exciting insights into life in what is a go-ahead and growing community," Mr Milford said.

When the program is finalised full details will be advertised through print media, via the Applefest website and on social media platforms.

Harcourt Applefest is an established event on the regional tourism calendar, with its market, family-friendly entertainment and farm-gate produce drawing visitors to Mount Alexander Shire from far beyond the shire boundaries. It was a memorable day in more ways than one at Trentham Golf Club on Saturday.

It's hard enough any time to get a holein-one (odds estimated at 12,500 to 1), but TWO players performed the feat after a record field of 92 hit off in the men's stableford event.

The aces came from Gary Middleton (13th hole) and Ewan Wight (15th).

Grade winners: A - Colin Wilson 37 points; B - Noel Young 42; C-Bob Hogan 40.

Ladies par: A - Julie Hanson +2; B Helen Young +2.

A qualifying round of the Victorian 4BBB Championship takes place at Trentham this Sunday (course closed until 2pm).

First-up from a five-month break, Kyneton galloper Hidden Charm was impressive in leading all the way at Camperdown on Saturday.

Raced by Hesket Bloodstock (manager - David Moodie) and trainer George Osborne, the lightly raced five-year-old mare was sent out a $2.60 favourite.

Jockey Harry Coffey is riding plenty of winners this season, and he rated Hidden Charm to perfection to win by 1.5 lengths from Amusing Magnus in the 0-58 Beverley & Graeme Bant Memorial Handicap over 1000m.

Hidden Charm is likely to tackle stronger company at her next company, with a 955m event under lights at Moonee Valley a possibility.

Woodend Petanque comp returns and becoming part of the local community.

The club plays at the Old Racecourse in Woodend on Mondays and at Hanging Rock Reserve on Thursdays from 4.30pm at both venues.

Kyneton golf The second round of Kyneton's Senior Championship took place on Saturday, with C-grader Glen Harris returning the best score of 42 points (30 handicap) from Mark Russell 40.

Glenn Cook won A-grade with 37 points on a countback from Jason McClure. Noel Alldis topped B-grade with 40, from Adam Parsonade 38.

Murphy and Keith Rodda were super pin winners.

Social competition is now back in full swing at the Woodend Hanging Rock Petanque Club at both Woodend and Hanging Rock grounds and membership is growing.

Plenty of new players took up membership in November with the trend likely to continue with interest shown from other prospective members.

Many new players are recently arrived residents in the area and are finding the club an excellent means of meeting people

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has installed a new lighting system and updated the lines at Tony Clarke Stadium. It now really is the centre of badminton for the Ranges.

So join Macedon Ranges Badminton Club, play the fastest racquet sport in the world, have fun, get fitter and healthier all at the same time.

The club caters for all ages and abilities, even if you've never played before. Whether you want to play every week or just fill-in, all are welcome. The new season starts Tuesday February 2. Until then the stadium is open every Tuesday evening from 8pm.

From February two sessions per week will be held: Tuesday evenings for open teams' competition, play starts at 8pm.

Women's teams' competition is Thursday mornings from 9.30am.

In somewhat chilly and windy conditions, Romsey golfers played a Texas Ambrose format on Saturday.

Longer hitters had an advantage after overnight rain, and the greens were in the best possible condition thanks to the hard work of Steve Wilkins.

The winners with 105 points were John Freestone (handicap 19), Mitch Atlas (8), Rn Walker (24) and Mick Nicholls Snr (24). Atlas and Mick Squire were nearest the pins. An early start to beat the heat in Wednesday's stroke event was called, and volunteers have been out and about mowing, watering and repairing damage from pesky corellas.

The first Rose Scanlon event of the year produced some top scores; Darlene Baker had a tremendous front nine of 36 with four birdies, and recorded a superb 84-21-69.

Wendy Gosden filled second spot with 98-29-69, with Jenny Hartley 96-24-72 third.

Kyneton golf There was plenty of interest in the outcome of Lancefield Golf Club's multiple stableford event on Saturday.

Ultimate winners were the Denis Davenport and Wayne Mee duo, with 81 points, from Di Brennan and Sandra Stevens 79.

A-grade went to Gary Dudderidge 38, B- Barry Flentjar 40, and C - John Wilson 38. Women - Di Brennan 38.

Men's midweek: Ross Farrar 38 points, from Ron MacLeod 36.

Wednesday women: Di Brennan 36, from Robyn Stevens 35.

Tigers stun Golf, Kyneton on top Bill West Lancefield pennant bowlers turned in a strong team performance to knock Central Highlands division one leader Kyneton Golf from top spot on Saturday.

The 19-shot all fours up victory on the Golf green was the best performance by the Tigers this season, and kept the double chance target in sight. Jeff Holmes 15-shot margin over Steve Taylor was crucial to the outcome.

Reigning premier Kyneton moved into top spot with a tight three-shot win at home to fifth-placed Romsey. The Redbacks lost the previous week to Golf by two shots, and must be exasperated at finishing on the wrong side of the ledger in tight matches.

Coach Gary Templar’s rink won by 12 shots, but Kyneton’s other rinks had sufficient margins to scramble home overall.

So there’s plenty at stake in the Romsey v Lancefield ninth round clash this Saturday.

Gisborne, hoping to consolidate fourth place, was shocked to be blitzed by 36 shots by bottom side Diggers Rest, which had all rinks up in a display reminiscence of the club’s surprise victory against Kyneton Golf earlier in the season.

Golf will be out for revenge when the ‘Diggers’ travel north on Saturday, while Kyneton won’t be taking any chances at Gisborne.

TRENTHAM SHINES In a remarkable performance at Trentham, the home side overwhelmed division two ladder-leader Kyneton Golf by 45 shots; Norm Cooke’s four was superb, while Neil Watts and co. could not take a trick in a 33-4 demolition.

Gisborne stayed in the finals hunt with a seven-shot margin against Romsey, and third-placed Woodend won at Kyneton, Lancefield broke through for its first win at Macedon’s expense.

Central Highlands earn shield Bill West

Central Highlands has defeated long-time rivals Central in the annual Millar-Deason Shield bowls event.

Played in ideal conditions at Kyneton on Sunday, January 10, the match between the neighbouring bowls divisions was both competitive and convivial.

Next season two Central clubs, Kilmore and Broadford, are expected to cross to the CHBD, and Wallan’s future geographic bowls status is still undecided.

Central now comprises eight clubs, and this may have been the last time the Millar-Deason fixture takes place. It dates back to 1991.

“It was a great effort by our representatives today,” stated CHBD secretary Ian Guymer after Central Highlands won overall by 19 shots - 152 to 133.

CHBD president Ian Ball was also pleased, thanking all the Central Highlands players for making themselves available for

selection, wishing Central well for the future, and thanking the Kyneton club for hosting the event.

Both divisions had seven fours competing, with the CHBD winning four rinks, losing two, and tying one.

Woodend’s new club champs

Woodend Bowling Club’s singles champions have been decided for the 2020-21 season.

Lois Scott won her second consecutive ladies’ title, with a comfortable victory in the final against 2017 champion Arlene Johnstone. On the way to the final, Lois had a bye in the first round and then defeated Henny Brama, while Arlene defeated Pat Morgan and Anne Dornau. Lois started well by winning four of the first five ends and then played a solid game to win 13 of the 20 ends played to win 25 to 9 - marker was club president Mike Dornau.

It was an early start on a hot day for the grand final of the club men’s singles, with Norm Bickerdyke taking on Mike Dornau. To reach the final, Mike had victories over Clarrie Brett 26-13, John Fisher 25-16 and Rob Smithies 27-18. Neil Jamieson had played brilliantly to make the final but was ineligible to play (due to af-

filiation with another club), which saw Norm move up to play in his third consecutive grand final after defeating Ken Usher in the play-off 25-21.

Norm made the most of his second chance to take an early lead 7-nil before Mike fought back to make it 11-all. Norm then went away again before Mike fought back again, with Norm finally winning 26-17. Thanks go to Trevor Sturt for marking in the semi-final and grand final matches. Congratulations to the grand finalists and winners. The two will now represent the Woodend Bowling Club in the Champion of Champions events, starting with the CHBD winners.

Other events still to be completed include the Consolation Championship, Ladies Pairs, Mens Pairs, Mixed Pairs, 21 Up and 100 Up.

The McIntyre Cup match of the round on Saturday saw reigning premier Gisborne totally outplay previously undefeated ladder-leader Sunbury United.

After losing to Romsey, the Dragons bounced back at Gardiner Reserve.

Paceman Josh McDonald struck a big blow early by removing key bat Dilan Chandima for a 'duck'; a far cry from his 539 runs and one previous dismissal this season.

The visitors never recovered, with the Dragons keeping the pressure on throughout. United made 110 (Amrit Sandhu 28 not out - Nick Watson 4-25, McDonald 3-25, Mick Allen 2-5 (six overs).

Allen 42 and Jayben Bannam 40 added 84 before the first wicket fell, with home town supporters very happy at that stage.

Gisborne finished up scoring 6/114, restoring that winning feeling despite being in fourth place on the ladder.

At Gisborne Gordon Oval, Woodend was restricted to 8/163 c.c. (Greg Matthews 34 n.o., B. Cameron 30, Tom Robson 27)

TROTTA STARS FOR MACEDON There were some outstanding individual performances in the other grades, none

better than the one turned in by Macedon captain Daniel Trotta.

He made an unbeaten 114 in his side's 6/194 c.c. against Romsey in Jensen Shield, then collected three wickets cheaply as the visitors were restricted to 138.

At Trentham, Harley Forgo compiled 102 before retiring in his side's winning 5/216 (Rory Healy 64) against Eynesbury 7/126.

Lancefield captain-coach Mark Bowden's fast bowling talents were on display as he ripped through the Melton South batting line, collecting 7-13 from seven overs as the home side capitulated for 61 (J. Mallia 38) in 14.1 overs after the Tigers had made 142 (Royce Millar 42).

Other match results included: Johnstone Shield: Gisborne 6/140 c.c. (L. Cavigan 50, W. Mackay 47) looked 'certs' to collect the points with the opposition 8/81, but an unbeaten ninth wicket stand carried Sunbury United to victory.

Riddell batsmen disappointed, being bundled out for 98, with Sunbury Kangaroos replying with 3/103.

Kyneton bowled Sunbury out for 122 in their Jensen Shield match, only to be restricted to 8/98 (L. Cream 42 n.o., H. Sheahan 28.

the Camp Reserve this Thursday January 21 when they play host to Grenville from 10am to 5pm. The side is a good chance of success with strong options with the bat and ball. The key will be consistent performances in the field.

The cricket action will continue on Thursday evening with round two of the Twenty/20 Knock Out series between Castlemaine United and Newstead at the Camp Reserve from 5.30pm and Maiden Gully Marist will also host Muckleford in Twenty/20 action.

The CDCA is also looking forward to hosting Under 17 Girls 20/20 rep cricket at the Camp Reserve and Wesley Hill on Sunday February 7. Meanwhile the CDCA Under 14 Girls side are also gearing up for their rep cricket competition at Ballarat.

Mixed results for Malmsbury There were mixed results for Malmsbury's cricket teams on Saturday, with the division one side well beaten

by Gisborne, and north grade easily accounting for Kyneton.

Gisborne batsmen scored heavily to knock up a healthy 4/217 c.c. (Glenn Waits 89, Liam Spears and Matt McDonald both 48).

Kyle Fisher took two wickets, and JD Singh and Ryder Blizzard one apiece.

Opening bat Chris Ganim rattled up 89 for the Berries, and Guy Nelson 30. No other batsman reached double figures in a disappointing effort that ended on 169 (Darcy Thomas four wickets).

In contrast, Kyneton struggled in north grade, being dismissed for 114 in 33 overs. Wickets were shared, with two to Paul and Tenzin de Podolinsky.

Malmsbury batsmen cruised to victory, helped by 38 Extras. Steve Carracher 33 not out, Jock Brazell 26 and Paul de Podolinsky 23 all impressed. Tom Lawson collected 4-44 for Kyneton.
