Gather around men

‘Cut the Silence’ is about giving men safe places to talk.

Affable Australian actor, Shane Jacobson, who lives locally with his young family, is fronting the campaign.

Shane spent a day interviewing other high-profile local men while they sat at JD’s Hair and Barber Studio in Romsey.

“It’s no secret that men aren’t always great at expressing their feelings or seeking out help when they need,” he said.

“I’ve done a couple of TV shows encouraging blokes to look after themselves, but Cut the Silence was a chance to get involved at a local level and tackle the issue in my own backyard, the Macedon Ranges.

"Let’s hope it gets men talking and saves some lives.”

The video interviews will hit websites and social media next month, with the aim of encouraging men to talk about issues challenging their mental health.

Cut the Silence is being organised by the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group and Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health, with funding from North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network, in the lead up to Men’s Health Week starting June 13.

Five barbershops across the Macedon Ranges are currently participating, with the organisers looking to recruit more.

The barbershop staff have received mental health and suicide prevention training and will carry information on local mental health services and supports as a Cut the Silence Barbershop.

Mat knew that capturing a broad range of men was integral to the project’s success.

“Sports clubs are obvious spots to find men, but not all blokes play sport,” he said.

“Barbershops are traditionally safe spaces for discussions. I ran the idea past my son who had started a barbering apprenticeship in Gisborne, and spoke to Shane and Ken. They liked the idea and it took off.”

Cut the Silence aims to address a significant area found wanting in relation to men’s health that was highlighted last year in #thehumancode research project, funded by NWMPHN. The project included representatives from local services and community organisations and a youth working group.

Nearly half of those surveyed in the shire said boys and men were not comfortable seeking out health services when they needed them. One in five men said they had experienced shame in asking for help.

And over half agreed that men would not be comfortable talking about their mental health before they reached breaking point.

Castlemaine Library is presenting the second talk in its Parenting in the Modern World series this Thursday.

In celebration of Pride Week and International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia, this session is called 'Let’s Talk LGBTQIAA+' and is all about understanding gender identity and sexual diversity for parents and carers.

Let’s Talk LGBTQIAA+ presents a panel of experts to discuss and answer questions about gender and sexuality.

Parents and carers can hope to gain a better understanding of the acronyms used by the rainbow community, how to use and understand gender-inclusive language, and some important parenting tips and communication strategies for talking with their young people. Included on the panel are Bron Grieve, community health

nurse; Sherene Clow, LGBTQIA+ health officer; Maree Dixon, HEY diversity worker at Headspace, and Mez Lanigan, senior WAY OUT worker. The discussion will be facilitated by library officer Hayley West, herself a parent of a non-binary child, and will provide ample opportunities for parents to ask questions in a safe environment.

Logging disrupted VicForests’ storm recovery works in the Wombat State Forest are continuing despite temporary disruption from anti-logging protesters last Monday.

At Babbington Hill near Lyonville, concerned locals and ecologists halted work in VicForests’ salvage operation.

The area is home to the threatened greater glider, which is listed as vulnerable to extinction, and there is concern that the logging operation is damaging critical habitat.

In order to salvage large logs from the June 2021 storm, VicForests has cleared more than two acres of forest, as well as large areas of indigenous vegetation, created multiple wide tracks and generated large heaps of tree heads and bark.

Wombat Forestcare's Gayle Osborne said the operation was not reducing fire risk,

it was a log grab by VicForests.

"They are trashing healthy forest to retrieve logs that should be left on the ground to create habitat for fungi, insects, small mammals and reptiles," she said.

"There are tools to measure fuel load risk, yet no evidence has been provided that this operation will reduce fuel loads.

“Scare tactics are being used to validate this operation. Fine fuels are considered to be a fire risk, not the large logs that are being removed.”

A VicForests spokesperson said they respected everyone’s right to protest, but were concerned when protests put people’s safety at risk.

"We ask that people do not enter Timber Harvesting Safety Zones for their own safety and the safety of VicForests staff and contractors," the spokesperson said.

Upcoming Council meetings

Strong community backlash has been heard in Macedon Ranges Shire Council's move to reject an 11-unit development for Riddells Creek.

The Richardson Street proposal had council officer approval but fear of overdevelopment and traffic chaos inspired an online community campaign and 17 formal objections.

Deputy mayor Rob Guthrie echoed objector sentiments in spearheading the move to refuse a permit.

"When I was first on council [people would say]: 'You're is going to make Gisborne like Sunbury', and now I'm reading in the Romsey (Structure Plan) submissions: 'We don't want to end up like Gisborne'. Riddells Creek is right in the middle," he said.

"Some of the units in Riddell have been knocked back by council, then approved at VCAT – but that doesn't mean we should lie down."

Supporting the move, Cr Annette Death said it was clear the community felt the development was excessive.

She highlighted resident concerns over car parking, neighbourhood character, waste collection and storm water run-off.

"The development could also set a precedent for the street. There are a further two properties in the street that are around the same size. If they followed suit, it could result in an additional 33 dwellings," she said.

stand up if challenged at VCAT. Cr Mark Ridgeway said he was unconvinced on the strength of the argument to refuse it.

"I'm not a fan of the proposal as it has been presented to us, but I don't think the reasons presented for knocking it back are particularly strong enough to achieve that aim," he said.

"I am not seeing convincing arguments on planning grounds to actually make that claim and I'm not sure how that would stand up before other bodies."

Cr Geoff Neil suggested better outcomes could be reached by avoiding a potential VCAT hearing.

"I can't support it because I know what the end result is going be and the end result is going to cost the entire community a bit of money," he said.

"I am not sure whether knocking back this proposal in its entirety is the best way to achieve a good planning outcome... this is (most likely) going to go to VCAT." Cr Neil sought to foreshadow the motion that, if lost, a decision on the matter be deferred for a month. In this time, he expected a compromise could be reached with the applicant.

Cr Neil's motion was not taken to vote as councillors voted to refuse the application.

Councillors to vote in favour of refusal were: Bonanno, Death, Anderson, Guthrie, Pearce, Moore and West. Cr Neil was the only councillor to vote against the motion. Cr Ridgeway abstained from voting.

Tourism town finalist Mount Macedon is a finalist in the Victorian Top Tourism Town Awards and needs your vote to win the title.

Labor roads pledge

An Albanese Labor Government will improve roads across Mitchell and Macedon Ranges Shires, investing an additional $11 million dollars to deliver safer, better local roads across the region. Labor incumbent for McEwen Rob Mitchell said the funding would go directly to the local councils and the works to be carried out would be identified in close consultation with local government and local communities.

"This investment comes on top of Labor's already announced $250 million boost to the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, delivering additional funding to local road upgrades in regional and peri-urban communities just like those in McEwen," Mr Mitchell said.

Amp up for Shared intelligence ‘The Gig’ and earlier resolutions

A new live music event known as ‘The Gig’ will take place in Woodend this Saturday.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Music in the Sticks crew will host the all-ages event, which will feature four local bands: Sack of Flour, Junkyard Wizards, The Seventh Circle and Miles Brennan.

Council's director of community, Maria Weiss, encouraged young people to make the most of the event.

“Events such as ‘The Gig’ reinvigorate our community spaces and promote the fun of live events, all while encouraging young people to socialise and reconnect with others in a safe environment,” she said.

The Music in the Sticks program has been running for more than 15 years providing valuable music and event industry skills and experience to young people aged 12 to 25.

‘The Gig’ is a drug, alcohol and smoke free event. Pizza and drinks will be available for purchase on the night.

The event will be held at the Woodend Community Hall on Saturday, May 21. Doors open at 6pm and the event concludes at 10pm. Pass-outs will not be permitted.

Macedon Ranges residents will be better connected to local police through a new state-wide Neighbourhood Policing model.

For Gisborne-based Senior Sergeant Amanda Cohen, the grassroots model means better community engagement, shared intelligence and earlier resolutions.

"It's so important for us to engage directly with the community in regional areas.

The more we engage, the more we learn and understand new ways we can step in and assist," she told the Express.

The initiative sees any issues raised recorded in a 'community issues register' with officers tasked to specifically address concerns and report back to residents on what's been done.

The model launched on April 1 and in the Macedon Ranges it has already seen establishment of a liquor licence accord and re-engagement with the Local Safety Committee.

"The liquor licence accord has allowed Macedon Ranges licensees, from drivethrough bottle shops to sporting clubs, to share information and find solutions to shared issues," Snr Sgt Cohen said.

"We have a number of local licensee holders and they have recognised that it has been a very powerful tool."

The Local Safety Committee was put on pause at the beginning of the pandemic but is now being reactivated as a way for different groups in the community to be heard on local issues.

"It's a police-driven initiative but it is about having a platform to raise all kinds of safety concerns in the community – whether they need to be flagged with police or another organisation like local council," Snr Sgt Cohen said.

She said the committee had resulted in many positive outcomes including investigation of traffic concerns, youth leadership programs and promotion of healthy masculinity.

Another initiative, 'Coffee with a Cop', has allowed residents to meet with their local police members in a casual setting to raise any concerns they may have.

Gisborne Senior Sergeant Amanda Cohen says the grassroots Neighbourhood Policing model means better community engagement, shared intelligence and earlier resolutions.

The model has also seen collaboration with organisations like Rotary and the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group.

Victoria Police is also embarking on a major effort to hear what Victorians want from police through a community sentiment survey specific to local government areas.

The survey will gauge how safe people feel, their ideas to improve safety, how they want to engage with police and how comfortable they feel approaching police and protective services officers.

"There are so many opportunities for us to have a role in making the community safe," Snr Sgt Cohen said.

"I want to hear from the community on safety and their concerns, and how we can better engage."

The sounds of Vienna come to Woodend The Woodend Winter Arts Festival will bring the Sounds of Vienna to the Macedon Ranges over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend when the Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra performs Schubert’s Octet at Woodend’s St Ambrose Church.

Taking place on the afternoon of Saturday June 11, attendees will be transported to the early days of the 19th century Vienna as this highly acclaimed ensemble performs what is recognised as Schubert’s finest works.

Bringing together leading Australian and international exponents, the Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra brings historical insights and new perspectives to masterpieces from the Classical and Romantic periods under the co-artistic direction of Rachael Beesley and Nicole van Bruggen.

Artistic director and founder of WWAF, Dr Jacqueline Ogeil, encourages people to book early as this concert is sure to sell out.

The Seduceaphones will be among the popular bands to hit the stage as part of the 2022 Castlemaine Jazz Festival.

The countdown is on until the highly anticipated Castlemaine Jazz Festival makes its return following a two-year hiatus.

The seventh annual event will run over three big days on the Queen's Birthday long weekend in June.

After COVID saw the festival's cancellation for the past two years running, committee members, performers and music lovers alike are thrilled to see the popular event return.

Castlemaine Jazz Festival committee member, Lyndal McClure, said they were inundated with expressions of interest from 70 bands and had selected 30 to feature over the three-day program.

Performances will take place at Castlemaine's iconic Theatre Royal, Phee Broadway Theatre, the Castlemaine Bowling Club and at new venue –Boom Town Wine at The Mill in Walker Street.

Road upgrade for major route

Works will begin on rebuilding a four-kilometre section of Melbourne-Lancefield Road in mid-May. The existing road surface between Bolinda Creek Bridge and Mullalys Road in Bolinda will be removed and the road foundations will undergo a complete rebuild and resurface.

Vegetation along the side of the road will also be trimmed to allow for improved visibility. Traffic will be restricted to one lane during works with the speed temporarily reduced to 40km/h within the work zone.

Drivers should allow 5-10 minutes extra travel time while works are in progress.

The road rehabilitation will be completed by mid-2022, weather permitting.

Gisborne nurse Andrea O'Meara has found herself in the hot seat.

She will be playing for a big cash prize on the Millionaire Hot Seat episode to air this Thursday, the Express can reveal.

Preparing for the show, Andrea knew exactly how she would spend the prizemoney if she won big or small.

Andrea eloped with her partner just before the pandemic hit and planned to have a small celebration with friends and family if she won a small cash prize.

She said a bigger win would help establish a business for her youngest son, 21, who has autism and has struggled to find employment.

"No one has really given him the chance he needs... Establishing his own business would really help boost his confidence and self-esteem," she told the Express.

Andrea is no stranger to game shows, having previously appeared on both Sale of the Century and Deal or No Deal.

Her Hot Seat moment coincided with the show's return to live audiences following pandemic restrictions. However, she teased her husband was "too chicken" to join the fun despite host Eddie McGuire's amiability.

"Eddie was good to talk to and has an ability to put you at ease," she said.

"You just put yourself out there and have a go."

Mount Alexander Shire will host local Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week events from May 26-June 5.

National Sorry Day on Thursday May 26 will include a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country by Dja Dja Wurrung Elder Uncle Rick Nelson and guest speakers, near the rotunda in Castlemaine Botanical Gardens, from 10.30am.

Reconciliation Week runs from Friday May 27 to Friday June 3. This year’s theme is 'Be Brave. Make Change'. The week will be launched at the Castlemaine Market Building at 10.30am on Friday May 27, with speeches, Nalderun Awards and morning tea.

Macedon Ranges residents affected by the June 2021 storms have until May 31 to lodge a claim for Disaster Recovery Allowance, and/or an Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment.

The Disaster Recovery Allowance provides income support payments to employees, primary producers and sole traders who can demonstrate they have experienced a loss of income as a direct result of the storms and floods.

DRA provides fortnightly payments for up to 13 weeks up to the applicable rate of JobSeeker Payment or Youth Allowance, depending on the person's circumstances.

It is available to Australian residents who are 16 years and older.

The DRA is not available to those already receiving another income support payment or pension such as the Age Pension, JobSeeker Payment or Service Pension.

The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment provides one-off financial assistance to eligible Australians adversely affected by the storms and floods. The rate of AGDRP is $1000 per eligible adult and $400 per eligible child.

AGDRP is available for people who have been seriously injured, have lost their homes or whose homes have been directly damaged, whose major assets have been directly damaged or are the immediate family members of a person who has died as a direct result of the storms and floods.

Differing community views have been aired on Macedon Ranges Council's potential sale of the East Paddock at Hanging Rock to the Victorian Government.

Earlier this year, the council received a new offer from the state government to purchase the community asset and community consultation on the move closed in April.

There were 205 responses to the online survey and 40 written submissions, and last Thursday councillors heard from seven speakers.

Tourism Macedon Ranges chair, Jenny Stillman, said councillors would need to weigh up the risk and reward when it came to the East Paddock sale.

"Hanging Rock is an asset on every level – community, cultural, and environmental – that has been waiting a long time for an opportunity to be developed to the degree that it needs to take the visitor economy and those other elements to the next level," she said.

"The master plan succeeded in defining these aspirational intents and, given that it was predicated on the sale of the East Paddock, we support that."

Similarly, Macedon Ranges Accommodation Association President Andrew Towner supported the sale, after seeking reassurance of the precinct's overall protection.

"The draft master plan appears the only way to get serious funding to be able to sup-

port Hanging Rock," he said.

While funding to improve the Hanging Rock precinct was generally applauded, presenters also cautioned the council on losing a high level of control to the state.

Others were cautious of the sale activating a master plan that would be detrimental for some local user groups.

Hanging Rock Cricket Club has called the precinct home for more than a century but if the draft master plan comes to fruition the club will need to vacate. Club president Peter Walsh said, while events like concerts that draw people from far and wide were being promoted in the plan, locals were being "pushed into the background".

"Other activities can continue to take place such as concerts, horse racing and markets, yet, local kids and us old blokes, we can't play cricket in our own backyard. The logic behind it doesn't make sense," he said.

All submissions on the potential sale of the East Paddock to the state government will be considered as the council moves to make a decision.

The council said discussions with Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning had indicated that if the sale of the East Paddock proceeded the council would likely have an ongoing role in the operation of the site, and would work in partnership to host events.

Difficult to see positives Beverley Campbell, Castlemaine At the end of May, CHIRP, its staff and the variety of services it provides, will move to share facilities with Community Rehab, part of Castlemaine Hospital.

CHIRP, currently situated in Mostyn Street, provides many vital services to the Castlemaine community, both for individuals and for groups.

This move to the hospital site is being forced on CHIRP by a proposed increase in rent for the current buildings, which CHIRP anticipates having difficulty in meeting.

There are many negatives to this move and, except for its expediency, it is difficult to see any positives.

I participate in one of the exercise groups for seniors provided by CHIRP. These groups provide an important service for maintaining the health and wellbeing of the participants.

The Castlemaine Hospital site sits on the edge of town on a slope that is difficult to negotiate for older people and people with disabilities. The main car-park at the hospital is poorly maintained and during the week it is almost impossible to find a parking spot. In addition, the main car park is situated on a different level on the hospital site to Community Rehab, making access difficult, and parking close to Community Rehab is limited.

It is easy to imagine that this move will be a major disincentive for people to continue to participate in CHIRP's services and a certain dropout rate is to be anticipated.

A change of heart by the landlord of

Federal Labor has asked the Australian Electoral Commission to investigate whether Liberal candidate for McEwen Richard Welch gave false information to the electoral commission about where he lives.

The Liberal candidate signed his nomination form on April 1 and lodged it with the commission on April 16, listing a Wallan address in the seat of McEwen as his home address, but now lives 50 kilometres away in Viewbank, in the electorate of JagaJaga.

CHIRP's current premises or a major funding grant would obviate this relocation and allow CHIRP to remain where it is so that it could continue to make services accessible to its many clients.

Pathway to a liveable future Malcolm Robins, Castlemaine The World Meteorological Organisation warns that the world faces about 50 per cent probability of exceeding 1.5°C of warming within five years and the IPCC sixth assessment report regional fact sheet for Australasia states that Australian land areas have warmed by about 1.4°C between 1910 and 2020.

Australia’s current greenhouse gas emission reduction commitment to ‘net zero by 2050’ is clearly inadequate to ensure an acceptable probability of a liveable (around 1.5° C) future for our children and grandchildren as well as key natural assets such as the Great Barrier Reef.

Last Wednesday evening I attended Castlemaine’s ‘Meet the Candidates Forum’ at the Taproom to hear in person from five of the seven candidates for the Bendigo electorate.

Credit is due to the organisers (Democracy for Dinner), all candidates and the full house audience for delivering an informative Q&A. I am concerned that only one of the candidates offered a greenhouse gas emissions pathway that even remotely approached the IPCC’s 1.5°C of warming target.

Our region risks catastrophic future loss of agricultural productivity, critical natural resources, and biodiversity, however from the responses Wednesday by most of our region’s existing and prospective elected representatives who will need to support our region’s future, are at best complacent lip service.

Virtually no carbon budget is available, and the use-by date of partisan transactional politics and scaremongering is long gone.

An immediate and genuine non-partisan approach to attaining a liveable future is essential.

We need action, not rhetoric. Our region demands pre-emptive and meaningful climate action before global heating tipping points from unabated burning of fossil fuels are irrevocably crossed.

We need strong representatives demanding carbon neutrality at least 15 years earlier than 2050 and ideally by 2030.

Evolution demonstrates that only the most adaptable will survive. Species that cling to old habits are doomed.

Yes the cost of living is going up and fuel and energy costs are always rising, but if you ignore climate change there will no longer be a certainty of food security and food and other commodity prices will not be just high but stratospheric.

Global human population is at an all-time high so demand for food commodities is only going to increase while food production is under extreme stress and is vulnerable to adverse climatic events.

Both Coalition and Labour have shifted the debate away from climate change to lesser bandaid issues as they are both stalling for time but time is running out.

The International Panel on Climate Change has estimated that, globally, the production of greenhouse gasses must be reversed in less than two and half years. Fat chance hey. Well we'd better get cracking and stop slacking, and give those pollies a damn good whacking.

The Calder Action Group Inc. has been an active participant in development planning for Calder Freeway improvements since 2007, a period of 15 years.We have enjoyed the construction of the Kings Road Overpass in 2012 and several minor safety improvements regarding speed limits, access changes and the planning for the Palmers Road Corridor project, which includes the highest priority improvements now needed – the Calder Park Drive Overpass project including the related railcrossing grade separation.

However, this time has passed without any clear indication of when further work will be funded, despite significant population growth in the areas that the Calder services and continuing accident rates.

Amendments to the Brimbank and Melton planning schemes were promulgated in June 2017 – nearly five years ago. These provided land reservations, acquisition overlays and approvals for project work on the Palmers Road project. The 2021-2022 State Budget provided $20M for planning this year from an overall $100M of state and federal money.

Given official predictions that our section of the Calder will in 2031 be the second most congested morning peak road in Australia, we expected the submission for Budget consideration to include the serious economic and social penalties with this congestion prediction. Unfortunately there was nothing in the recent state budget!

Is there a prejudice against the western metropolitan or perhaps the north-west of the state that precludes this vital development?

Historically, farming has always been something of a gamble though it usually paid off.

But climate change really stacks the odds well against all conventional forms of farming, as destructive weather events increase in frequency and intensity.

You know them as heatwaves, droughts, rain, hail, floods and damaging winds. These events are often followed by fungal rot, insect plague infestations, grass and scrub fire, smoke tainting and disease causing livestock loses and diminished harvests.

Any one of those events may only be one week out of 52 but that is enough to ruin a year’s work.

Democracy for Dinner's 'Meet the Candidates' event at The Taproom at Shedshaker Brewing Castlemaine last Wednesday evening has been declared a success.

Democracy for Dinner representative Bryn Davies said it was a very good event with five candidates taking the time to attend and about 75 turning out to the Taproom ensuring a packed house.

"We also had more than 190 people tune in to watch the livestream," he said.

"Our mission is to spread the burden of democracy and make

it a bit easier for everyone to be an informed citizen through events like this," he said.

"Democracy doesn't work if its a spectator sport, everyone needs to participate and get involved. It's great to see so many people here tonight and also on the livestream.

"Thanks to the candidates for being here tonight and also for putting up their hand to represent our community, its certainly no small thing to put your hand up to be a representative for the people of the Bendigo electorate, they are certainly putting in a lot of hard work to

gain your vote," he said.

Candidates to attend included Cate Sinclair (Greens), Darin Schade (Liberal), Lisa Chesters (Labor, sitting MP), Matthew Bansemer (Liberal Democrats) and James Laurie (Independent). Two candidates sent their apologies Ben Mihail (Pauline Hanson's One Nation) and Elijah Suares (United Australia Party).

Each candidate had the opportunity to introduce themselves before answering questions on a wide array of topics with themes gathered from questions sent to the Democ-

Elizabeth says interacting with a horse also gives the participant an awareness of another’s state and the effect their own internal state (feelings of calm, happiness, excitement, anxiety, anger, etc) is having on them.

"The horse will always respond authentically, giving clear and non-judgemental feedback.

"Participants are coached in how to read the horse’s signals and body language. When the horse shows that it is feeling calm and safe with the person it gives them a sense of acceptance and safety and can improve self-worth."

Unexpected calm and focus "My experience in the horse yard with young people and children who experience anxiety and have difficulty regulating their emotions, has been consistent.

"They have shown gentleness and been able to calm themselves in a way that has often surprised and moved their parents/carers.

People are being urged to get a blood pressure check at their local pharmacy this month as the key step in reducing their risk of stroke. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is the greatest modifiable risk factor for stroke.

Buda Historic Home and Garden Do you love heritage? Arts and culture?

Gardening? Or simply meeting new people and being involved as part of a team?

Buda Historic Home and Garden is actively looking for new volunteers to help in a variety of interesting and stimulating areas of work.

Buda, was the home of noted Hungarian silversmith Ernest Leviny and his family.

Two generations of the Leviny family lived there continuously for 118 years, from the goldrush era until 1981 and the property is unique because it houses a collection of Australian artworks including those by Ernest and five of his talented daughters.

The house and garden were opened to the public in 1982 as a house museum and Buda’s volunteers have been instrumental in the day to day running of the organisation ever since. Buda is indebted to its dedicated volunteers who contribute to making it a great place.

Buda's volunteers specialise in many different areas, including the committee, reception and giftshop, gardening, house maintenance and collection, tour guiding, administration, Buda functions and events.

Here is an example of the reward and appreciation Buda volunteers receive.

The Victorian Goldfields Railway Without its volunteers The Victorian Goldfields Railway could not operate its diverse range of heritage steam train services between Castlemaine and Maldon. So a big 'thank you' is in order!

Discover volunteer opportunities Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health With volunteering numbers in decline, particularly over the last two years since COVID, a forum coming up aims to explore the positive benefits volunteering has on the community and on those engaged in a volunteering role and how to increase the accessibility and inclusivity of volunteering.

National Volunteering Week is an opportunity to celebrate and recognise the important contribution volunteers make to so many parts of our community including sporting clubs, schools, the arts, fundraising and healthcare.

Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health’s Volunteer Central Vic is teaming up with Mount Alexander Shire Council to look at how we can bring our communities together and make them stronger by getting more people involved in volunteering.

"We are seeing an unprecedented drop in volunteer engagement across our region," says Lisa Richards, from Volunteer Central Vic. "We know that we are facing greater challenges ahead, and fewer volunteers means a longer recovery from disasters, as well as reduced access to community supports and services."

Melissa Fowler from Mount Alexander Shire Council facilitates the Mount Alexander Connectors network. "Volunteering can be a pathway to employment, reduces isolation and brings greater community connectedness. We really want to take a closer look at how we can overcome some of the barriers people experience and make it easier to participate in community life."

It would be about four years, at Thompson House. I will also be at Ellery House moving forwards How has it felt to return to volunteering after COVID? Oh, it’s been great. I missed it and I’m positive the dogs did too!

What do you get out of volunteering?

Well, although I feel like a bit of a youth, it could be me in the future and there are a lot of people who don’t have anyone.

A lot of people have visitors but it’s very important to think of others and not just yourself.

What would you say to others thinking about volunteering?

I think it’s one of the best things you can do. The rewards work both ways, and you get a lot out of it. It keeps your own social interactions going too!

Angela Sye: Maldon Hospital Entertainment volunteer How long have you been volunteering?

I have been volunteering about 11 years across Castlemaine Health and Maldon Hospital. I volunteer at Ellery House and Maldon Hospital and I also play the hymns for the church service. Also teach music classes at University of Third Age and I’m very active in that organisation. I also volunteer in the local church, the Uniting Church and I assist them where needed.

How has it felt to return to volunteering after COVID? The lockdowns were very bad, it was hard to communicate with friends and family.

Although we were isolated, I would meet friends in the park and play music to keep

connections and communication open.

I wanted to keep the stimulation going as much as possible. It helped me but it helped everyone as well.

What do you get out of volunteering?

The pleasure! Volunteering generally, I see in the nursing homes how much people enjoy what I play. To see them humming and clapping along brings me pleasure, because I’ve brought a bit of life and happiness to their days. At the U3A, people originally can’t play and after a few weeks are playing. I love sharing what I have, and the happiness I can give these people.

What would you say to others thinking about volunteering?

It’s a great thing to do, because you’re helping other people and yourself as well. It is a tremendous thing to do!

Wendy Barron: Harcourt Walking group volunteer How long have you been volunteering?

I have been a member of Harcourt walking group since the group started, about five years I think.

How has it felt to return to volunteering after COVID? It’s been fine. During COVID we kept the walking up but went walking in sociallydistanced pairs. We didn’t do big walks, just a couple of times a week to keep each other out of mischief.

What do you get out of volunteering?

Meeting new people, the exercise and networking. It’s good company. And if you want to go for two walks a week it really helps to have people relying on you.

What would you say to others thinking about volunteering?

It’s good value, it’s worthwhile. Everything you do for other people comes back to you in a good way.

Benefits of a service club

Support in times of need Castlemaine SES The COVID pandemic has prevented recruitment activity for the past couple of years for the Castlemaine Unit of the State Emergency Service and now it finds itself in need of more volunteers.

The unit will host an open night to allow locals to meet the team, take a look over the vehicles and equipment the SES uses and learn what it means to be an SES volunteer.

Daniel Bone, Deputy Controller at the Castlemaine Unit, explains that volunteering with the SES provides a unique opportunity to help your local community, rescue people in need and make new friends.

"Our volunteers come from all walks of life and bring with them many different skills and interests. At the SES there really is something to interest everyone," DC Bone says.

"Many of our volunteers provide physical on-the-spot help during floods and storms or at search and rescue incidents. But there are also volunteers who prefer to work in the background, helping to coordinate response crews during larger incidents or going out to schools and community events to help people be better prepared for when emergencies occur.

"The one thing our volunteers have in common is the desire to support our local communities in times of need."

DC Bone says it’s a great feeling to know you are helping people when they need it most, perhaps even saving a life.

Castlemaine Lions Club Becoming a volunteer and a member of a service club has great benefits. Take the Castlemaine Lions club for example.

Becoming a member not only increases your base of friends and acquaintances, it gives you the opportunity to 'do something' by giving back to the community.

Many local groups and causes have greatly benefited from Lions Club fundraising. The Castlemaine club's biggest fundraiser each year is its April Swap Meet. The Lions are helped out in the organisation of it by other clubs and groups who in turn, are given their rightful share of the profits. All funds the Lions raise go back to help others. For

example, some of the most recent donations from the Lions' fundraising efforts went to Ellery House for a new wheelchair purchase. Another to benefit from Lions' fundraising is the Castlemaine hospital, which most recently purchased new equipment for the operating theatre through a club donation. Castlemaine Lions holds just one meeting a month so the nitty-gritty of the club doesn't take up too much of members' time. In fact, when it comes to meetings, the members call the tune so they suit! Bringing back history Castlemaine Historical Society Castlemaine Historical Society is a run entirely by volunteers who are committed to providing high-quality archive and local history research facilities. The society's volunteers carry out a variety of tasks such as family history research, proof reading, data entry, administrative duties and garden maintenance. Members of the public who visit the historical society to do research are assisted by enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers. Information from the society's archives is made available to researchers by the work of volunteers who proof read and compile indexes. An example of information available is the Bradfield Database.

This database has more than 13,000 entries and consists items of news that were of

volunteering with the SES. Regular training takes place on Monday nights from 7pm and volunteers receives accredited training as part of their role.

This includes practical skills like first aid, four wheel driving and chainsaw operation along with general and road crash rescue.

Training is also available in leadership, media communications, incident management and community education.

The open night will be on Tuesday, May 24, at 7pm at 1 Scotts Avenue, Castlemaine.

I know from talking with many of these

Volunteering has a range of benefits. It’s essential to encouraging economic participation, mitigates isolation and loneliness, and increases social inclusion and community participation. It’s human nature to feel good after helping someone out.

Additionally, volunteers gain valuable skills and develop personally and professionally from their involvement in differing organisations.

Volunteering also provides many transitional social pathways that provide answers for people in moving from study to work; unemployment to work; disadvantage to work and work to retirement.

The benefits are endless.

There is something beautiful about being around community members who are passionate about working towards a common greater good.

It’s all go at the Shed

the RSL is able to raise the money that it does. This year’s ANZAC Appeal raised a total of $9929.25.

Another way the RSL provides for veterans is to hold commemorative services to honour the fallen. These include ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day, VP Day, Vietnam Veteran’s Day and Beersheba Day. These services are all run by Kyneton RSL volunteers. ANZAC Day is always accompanied by the traditional Gunfire Breakfast that follows the Dawn Service. Kyneton RSL would like to thank the following businesses for their support of this year’s breakfast: Baker’s Delight, Watts Fresh, P.G. Thomas, Woolworths Kyneton and PFD Food Services.

In 2021 Kyneton RSL's volunteers contributed almost 2000 hours of their time, predominantly in support of veterans.

Kyneton RSL Kyneton RSL's major objective is to look after the welfare of veterans and at the heart of this are the RSL's volunteers.

The RSL assists veterans in many ways: camaraderie nights, Morning Melodies, members’ draws, bus trips, subsidised meals and assistance with home maintenance such as gutter cleaning, window cleaning, general garden maintenance and financial assistance for pharmaceuticals and utilities. The Kyneton RSL also has its own courtesy bus to transport members to and from the RSL if they are unable to do so themselves.

To be able to provide assistance to veterans, the Kyneton RSL holds two appeals each year, one for ANZAC Day and one for Remembrance Day. Badges and poppies sold during these appeals raise money for the sole purpose of assisting veterans and it is with the assistance of volunteers that

Education Week from May 22-28 celebrates the strengths and achievements of Victoria's education sector.

Now in its 78th year, the theme of this year's week is 150 Years of Public Education.

Education Week 2022 is an opportunity for all primary and secondary schools, higher education providers, and early childhood education and care services to commemorate the past, celebrate the present and imagine the future of education in Victoria.

At Macedon Primary School, the environment plays an important role in bringing the curriculum to life. The school week includes regular teaching, learning and play in Middle Gully Reserve, a five-acre bushland reserve opposite the main school site. In Middle Gully Reserve students, supported by teachers and a dedicated volunteer parent committee, take part in a number of exciting initiatives. Some of the regular activities include monitoring the water quality in the dam, regularly tending to the garden, tracking and photographing local wildlife and learning about the local Indigenous history through immersion in the bush.

The learning in Middle Gully Reserve is complemented by an extensive camping and outdoor education program in which students learn about teamwork, responsibility the natural surroundings while developing their resilience.

Lancefield Primary School is committed to the wellbeing of all members of the school community and promotes positive relationships between home and school.

The school values of Learning, Positivity and Safety are reflected in the everyday teaching and interactions between staff, students, and families. LPS provides a safe, calm and orderly environment making reasonable adjustments to ensure all students are supported in reaching their full potential.

The Wil-im-mee Moor-ing Centre houses a full kitchen to support the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program for all year levels. Study skills for exams and life at Girton Grammar School As the first semester examinations for Girton students draw near, the explicit teaching of study skills, especially for year seven students about to do their first examinations, will be taught to help students study effectively.

Acting head of Girton Grammar School, Dr Emma O’Rielly, said that a vague goal of general study was ineffective and students needed to “learn how to learn”.

“Examination time can be stressful for students, so if we teach them study skills, they tend to feel less overwhelmed by the task ahead of them," Dr O'Rielly said.

“Our year seven students will be taught how to develop a specific weekly study plan. Just like their school timetable, the study plan will include planned breaks.

“When students understand the importance of revising and consolidating their understanding of information, they are generally more motivated to take control of their learning.

“Students will learn about the different learning styles so that they better understand what works for them. They will understand that one day after a lesson, if they do not consolidate their learning, they will have lost between 50 to 80 per cent of what they learned in class."

First semester and end-of-year examinations are conducted at Girton for all students from year seven to year 11.

Examination data is used to track student progress between the semesters and year on year. Coupled with annual general ability testing, student data can measure each student’s learning potential.

“It is essential that students have an opportunity to demonstrate all they have learned through assessment, which is also important for identifying any learning areas where additional support might be needed," Dr O’Rielly said.

“When teaching study skills, students come to understand that feeling anxious about examinations is natural. They know research confirms that a moderate level of stress helps

to energise, motivate, and keep us focused and alert, and build resilience.

“Ultimately, doing the work is the best step students can take to manage feelings of worry about assessments. This means being organised and asking for help well in advance of examination day.

“When our current year seven students enter year 12, they will enjoy the benefit of many years of experience preparing for and sitting examinations, which is a skill set that they will carry through life in many different contexts,” Dr O’Rielly said.

Sacred Heart College Students at Kyneton's Sacred Heart College study one of two languages – French or Japanese. They begin this study at year seven and have the option of continuing right through to year 12.

At the end of 2021, students in years seven and nine entered the speech contest run by the Japanese Language Teachers Association of Victoria. The college was delighted to be informed that Sylvie Rigby (then year seven) was awarded third place in the individual category. “We’re very happy … it’s onwards and upwards,” trainer Danielle Chapman said after Haystacks Calhoun made a successful return to racing with a gutsy win at Kyneton last week.

Off the scene since just before Christmas, the four-year-old was impressive in carrying topweight of 64kg and starting from the outside barrier on his home course.

“He’s had a throat operation and a spell, and it was a very tough win,” the pleased trainer said.

Named after a famous heavyweight wrestler, ‘Haystacks’ was ridden in fine style by Michael Poy, who had irked punters with his misjudgement in the previous race.

“He’s a very capable young rider … he’s had two wins from four rides for us,” Chapman said.

“It was a perfect ride today.”

A bargain-basement buy for the Chapman family from North Woodend, Haystacks Calhoun chalked up his third race win at his 12th start, taking earnings over the $63,600 mark.

He edged out the Mick Sell-trained Magnum Bullet to win narrowly.

DESERVED WIN Earlier in the day, the George Osborne-trained Magnalicious broke through for her maiden win.

The four-year-old mare will now go for a well-earned spell.

Starting a very short odds-on favourite, Magnalicious was superbly ridden by in-form Alana Kelly, getting up in the last few strides.

At one stage in her career it was feared the mare may not recover from injury, and her painstaking comeback is one of those good news stories in racing.

In this race, Mick Sell’s five-year-old Skyler’s Princess finished a close second at her debut run.

Females in football

Football Victoria’s week of celebrating females in football ended on Sunday with both of the Macedon Rangers Soccer Club's girl’s teams playing at home.

The U9s came away with a win, which was a double bonus – a nice way to cap off the week of celebrations but also a great 30th birthday present for their coach Bodey.

The under 11s were up next against the girls from Avondale – what a game!

Coach Matt Bender could hardly contain his excitement “well, well, well …. Look what we saw today! Some very stylish, free-flowing and attacking football+.

First-year player Amelia scored her first goal, which is always a very exciting moment, Charlee added one to her scorecard and Olivia’s second goal came from her concern kick – very excited mums and dads on the sidelines. Matilda is growing week to week in her new role as goal keeper, Bella was in total control of her back line and Chloe her forward line, giving the newer team members the support and confidence to be involved.

Following the match both teams celebrated with Cup Cakes a truly female way to celebrate!

Kyneton Kyneton Golf ladies completed the 36-hole Dr Groves Trophy event last week, and were plessed to welcome Dr Groves’ grand-daugher, Rosemary Dowling, from Royal Melbourne GC, for the day.

The winner was Lorraine Ryan, with two fine rounds of 76 and 71 – 147 net, two clear of Marian Orr. Ryan also won the A-grade award on the day with 91-20-71, from Vicki Nettleton 98-25-73, with Orr’s 99-35-69 best in B-grade from Beth Murray 104-27077.

The play-off for the May Medal resulted in a close finish, with Joan Gibbs edging out Deb Kohlman.

Orr and Lois Scott were NTP the winners.

Semi-finals of the 2021 RSL singles knockout catch-up on Saturday saw David Pilcher d Glenn Cook 3/1, Ivan Smolcic d Nathan Thompson 6-5, and Billy McKenn d Mark Russell 2up. Terry Gamble won on a walkover.

Lancefield Lancefield’s Sheena Flentjar was elated to be crowned the Yarrawonga Autumn Tournament 36-hole Stableford Champion last week.

With 68 stableford points, accumulated with rounds of 31 and 37 over two days, Sheena defeated a large field of

local and visiting players, including Lancefield’s Kaylene Cruise.

Monthly medals were decided at Lancefield the previous week, with Dennis Davenport the men’s winner with 79-5-74, on a countback from James Whiteford 97-23-74.

Anne Robinson was the women’s medal winner with 105-33-72, from Florence Meyer with 109-34-75.

The nine-hole comp. was won by up and coming Sandra Matthews with an excellent 34.5 nett.

Men’s stableford (Saturday) went to James Whiteford (21) with 35 points, from Kevin McBride and Glen Holland both 33.

Mount Macedon A substantial field turned out on Saturday for the first day of the club’s 54-hole championships.

Difficult weather conditions took the points, with no-one able to achieve or better their handicaps.

Handicap leaders: Paul Burrows in Agrade with 78-7-71, Phil Thomas 81-13-68 was the B-grade (and overall) winner on a countback from Aaron Edmunds 80-12-68, and Jack Carter 90-21-69 leads C-grade.

The par bisque round attracted 22 players in perfect conditions on Wednesday.

Young Ben Monk, grandson of ‘Tiger’, carried the flag for the Penney household with a scorching +11 from a handicap of 31 (coming down quickly) including two birdies to win B-grade from Neville Clark (24) +8.

PJ Cushen (three birdies) took out A-grade with +5 from a 15 handicap, on a countback from Isaac Golden and Lachlan O’Gorman.

Romsey A few players were absent from the second round of Romsey’s golf championships on Saturday due to COVID and n weddings, with a highlight being the hole in one by Mick Nicholls Jnr on the 147m par 3. A top shot!

The 18-hole winner was Chris Burkett with 86-18-68, from Andrew Laing 8601769 and John Freestone 97-25-72.

Captain Mal Mottram leads the championship with 80, 82 – 162, Laing is ahead in B-grade with 92, 86 – 178, and Freestone is ahead in C-grade on 101-97 – 198. The trio also led the way on handicap in their grades.

Rain affected the Alexandra tournament last week, with Ruth Worland carding 8817-71 to be the tournament and A-grade winner on her own course.

Round two of the women’s club championship took place last Wednesday, with Shirley Shelton 99-25-74having the best score, ahead of Wenday Gosden 104-2876.

Elaine Scanlon’s putter was on fire, and her winning 26 putts included two chip-ins as well.

In women’s second round pennant Romsey went down .5 – 1.5 against Lancefield.

Trentham The annual Gisborne versus Trentham Challenge began 28 years ago, and last week was hosted by Trentham, with 62 ladies participating.

Best scores from each club: A-grade Virginia Dalton (G) 41 points, Sally Kirkright (T) 35; B – Linda Ladham (G) 39, Pat Kinnell (T) 32.

Kent Newton (13) and Paul Robinson (34) came in with a nett 32 to win Saturday’s 4BBB stroke event, from Ray Hannam and Lincoln Porter 64.

Ladies: Caroline Johnston had her first win with a score of -2 in the par event, with Rhonda Bradley -4 runner-up.

Woodend Gary Delaney and Riley Berry were in good form at Woodend on Saturday.

They combined well to take out the Ambrose event with 69-10.5-58.5.

Runners-up were G. Davies and M. Fraser with 67-6.75-60.25.

Winners of the annual Tom Surtees event, one of the prized events on the club’s calendar, were Trevor Bowen and Chris Holiday.

SPORTS wrap Late goal stymies Hawks’ fightback Bill West

After trailing by five goals at half-time and seemingly headed for defeat, a gallant Woodend-Hesket kicked six unanswered second half goals on Saturday to overhaul Diggers Rest, only to go down when a late goal put the visitors back in front just before siren time.

It was high drama, desperation football in good conditions at Gilbert Gordon Oval, with both these sides having become used to very close finishes this season.

Hawks’ coach Josh Pound, who could not play due to a calf injury, was philosophical after the match.

“While It’s another frustrating defeat, our second half shows we’ve turned the corner.

“There’s no doubt we have a side capable of matching the others (finals contenders) if we produce our best,” Pound said.

He admitted the Hawks had looked “pretty shaky” when Diggers Rest took control with five goals to two points in the second term.

Home side supporters came to life in the third quarter as the Hawks turned the game around with five straight goals, with the visitors battling to score.

An early last-term goal put the Hawks in front, and they seemed destined to hang on with both defences on top.

A painful leg injury to Diggers’ forward

Deven Costigan resulted in play being held up for nearly 10 minutes while he received medical attention; the drama increased as a couple of shots for goal missed narrowly and tired players on both sides pushed themselves to the limit.

Hawks’ captain Alistair Rae was off with a shoulder injury for the last 15 minutes.

Finally, the stalemate was broken when star Mitch Jensen – well held by Cody Bowen for much of the match – snapped under pressure and the ball bounced through an open goal to put the visitors back in front.

Pound said Dean Bramley and Jack Arceri were excellent all match; and Tom Gawthrop did well up forward., the Hawks look forward to playing Macedon at Tony Clarke Oval this Saturday in a big game for both sides.

Diggers Rest has a strong list, and should be there come finals time.

Women to the forefront A special sell-out function to thank and acknowledge women who tirelessly devote time and effort to keep Woodend-Hesket Football Netball Club running smoothly was held on Saturday.

Food, music and entertainment, with two outstanding sportswomen at the top level as absorbing guest speakers, were interspersed with the announcement of the individual awards, two of which are to be presented annually.

The function ran for several hours in the club’s social rooms at Gilbert Gordon Oval, where a tremendous senior football match between the Hawks and Diggers Rest was a counter attraction.

There was a Hawaiian dress-up theme for the function largely planned and organised by the quartet of Anne-Louise Lindner, Jane Dwyer, Angela White and Mel Wilson.

District MP Mary-Anne Thomas came along and offered her congratulations, and was informally reminded of the need for state government funding to enable muchneeded netball facilities to go ahead.

Introducing the two guest speakers, Hawks’ football coordinator Andy Wilson said super sportswomen, Madi Browne and Chloe Malloy, were excelling in their chosen fields.

The interviews revealed an insight into sport at the top level, and how girls from ordinary backgrounds could make it to the top. Browne’s international netball prowess and Malloy’s top ranking with the AWFL (currently with Collingwood) and their flow-on involvements held everyone’s attention.

The first of the interspersed awards was the Kellie Duff Medal, named after an inspirational member who has been with the Hawks for years.

The winner, young netballer Hannah Dwyer, was selected by the Woodend Juniors Football Club, with a summary outline of Hannah’s progress in netball from a very early age.

Later in the afternoon, milestone awards were made to three long-serving and valued netball players who have been with the Hawks for years.

Netball, unlike football, only had official games played counted for the past eight years.

The recipients were Brittany Bowen (107 recorded games), Sarah Smith (114) and Maddy Staresina (117), but actually many more.

Their contributions on and off the court for the Hawks over many seasons were warmly acknowledged.

OUTSTANDING LEADER The new Julie Gove Medal is for outstanding club participation and leadership, and Julie was there to sum-

marise how she first became involved with the Hawks 24 years ago, and is still going strong.

The senior committee had 11 votes to decide the inaugural winner, and the recipient was vice-president and long-time netball coach Anne-Louise Lindner, whose fundraising abilities were also documented.

Hawks’ president James Chettle praised Ms Lindner for her expertise and involvement, and willingness to take on responsibilities.

From the times when Woodend-Hesket was largely regarded as “a men’s club”, great progress had been made.

Growing up in Whittlesea, Chloe Malloy was the only girl playing football with the junior boys; she had the chance to take up a valuable basketball scholarship in the United States, but ultimately decided she preferred Australian Rules with the AFLW making great progress in recent years.

Chloe and Madi Browne both spelt out the opportunities that can arise both on and off fields/courts for talented players. Media involvement is one such field.

Near the end of proceedings, an autographed football and netball were auctioned, quickly bringing $950.

Organisers express thanks to all who attended, or supported the function, dubbed ‘Women at the Nest’, in any way.

Castlemaine Croquet Club welcomes new players and is currently offering a training opportunity at the Berkeley Street based club.

CCC member Tony Millar says playing croquet is great fun.

"You are outdoors in a pleasant environment. The players are friendly, it is good exercise, it develops hand eye coordination, and careful practise develops skilful shots. There are many strategies and tactics to learn," he said.

The club is currently providing a series of training sessions to eight members of Castlemaine U3A who have expressed interest in playing the game.

Rance shines for Creek

Massive day for Pies

Castlemaine played host to eighth-placed Kangaroo Flat in round six action at the Camp Reserve last Saturday.

The bumper day of local footy and netball action was capped off by a historic practise match between the new Castlemaine Magpies AFL Central Victoria Women's side and the Mount Alexander Falcons Women's side under lights.

Sitting just one rung below the Roos, the Magpie senior footballers were determined to bring their best to the park.

The home side made a bright start in the opening term kicking two goals to the Roos' three to trail by eight points at quarter-time.

The Magpies maintained the momentum in the second term and were down by just 10 points at half-time.

Flat upped the intensity in the third quarter to take the margin out to 30 points and in the end the visitors proved too strong. Castlemaine went down 2-1, 4-4, 5-5, 6-7 (44) to Kangaroo Flat 3-3, 5-4, 9-11, 11-4 (80).

Trentham Saints in full swing

Trentham Saints are in full swing now all temporary facilities are in place and operational.

Thanks to the hard-working committee for overcoming all the hurdles and bumps to get it sorted. Thursday night dinners will be a regular occurrence with the installation of the kitchen. As always many hands make light work, get involved where you can and join in the fun behind the scenes.

Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League sides contested round four matches last Saturday.

In local bouts, Campbells Creek played host to Maldon, Harcourt welcomed Lexton and Newstead made the trek to Talbot.

There was a real buzz at Campbells Creek as former AFL star, Richmond defender and five-time All-Australian Alex Rance pulled on the boots for the Creek Magpies.

The appearance was part of a part of an initiative by former AFL players to support struggling country clubs.

Campbells Creek was one of eight clubs selected for support from 500 applications, with the local club having just returned to the league follow a year's recess.

Rance certainly showed his class booting three goals for the Magpies and being named Best on Ground.

However, despite the welcome boost the Dons proved too strong for the Creekers going on to win the match 7-2, 10-8, 14-14, 20-20 (140) to Creek 3-2, 4-3, 5-6, 7-6 (48). Maldon now sits in third position on the ladder with four wins from five outings.

A courageous, skilled and straight-kicking Kyneton combination toppled third-placed Golden Square by seven points on Saturday, lifting hopes of making the Bendigo League football finals this season.

In a close and intriguing battle at the Showgrounds, the Tigers delighted coach Paul Chapman, selectors and supporters by outscoring the opposition by four goals to two in the crucial final quarter.

Kyneton has moved to fifth on the ladder, and with an undoubted boost in confidence and the clash at Eaglehawk on Saturday can easily be rated at the match of the seventh round.

Beaten for the first time this season the previous Saturday, a fired up Golden Square expected to bounce back with a victory.

It was not to be, and scores were close throughout with the Tigers’ pace and skills on show. Big man James Orr lifted the Tigers, and on-baller Dean Bartrop showed his class with plenty of possessions.

Up forward, the very accomplished recruit Cam Manual followed up his six goals in the

previous round with five more on Saturday; Ben Cameron chipped in with four majors as well and from a Tigers’ perspective the absolute belief and will to win was extremely pleasing. More than the average number of 50-metre penalties were handed down, and the Tigers took advantage with straight kicking when it mattered.

The Tigers were pleased to keeping Golden Square’s dangerous forwards under control for much of the match.

At half-time there was a growing level of excitement around the ground, with Kyneton trailing by just three points; five goals to four in the third quarter left the Tigers two points down with perhaps their season on the line.

The Tigers received huge applause from supporters when the final siren sounded, and there was a celebratory atmosphere at the evening’s entertainment at the Showgrounds.

Now it’s full attention to this Saturday’s encounter at Eaglehawk.

Gisborne depth to the fore Despite the absence of dangerous key forwards, Pat McKenna and Jack Scanlon, Gisborne senior footballers continued on their winning way on Saturday, toppling South Bendigo by 104 points.

Sitting unbeaten on top of the ladder, with a mammoth percentage of 334.76, the Bulldogs’ coach Rob Waters and fellow selectors clearly have an abundance of talent at their disposal.

Safe to say plenty of other Bendigo League teams are surely envious if they look at the Bulldogs’ list.

And this is despite having to juggle the impact of COVID and injuries across the first few rounds.

Bulldogs’ supporters who turned up in numbers at Gardiner Reserve on Saturday were never worried.

Across the three football matches, Gisborne scored 62 goals, while conceding just nine!

The absence of McKenna and Scanlon allowed other players to step up; having Josh Kemp up forward is a valuable fall back position.

Braiden Blake showed his class and brought onballers into play, with the Bulldogs having numerous routes to goal.

After a close first term, the home side seized control and led by 46 points at half-time.

It proved to be a matter of how much Gisborne could win by, and a further eight goals in the last term wrapped up a dominant display.

This Saturday, Gisborne heads north to Kangaroo Flat, with another substantial

victory seemingly assured despite The Flat comfortably accounting for Castlemaine on Saturday.

Netballers excel

Kyneton's A-grade netballers excelled on Saturday, defeating a very physical Golden Square by 14 goals.

The Tigers’ top side had decisive shooting combinations and plays from the talented trio of Michelle Fletcher, Rachelle Mangan and Claire Oakley.

In the earlier matches, the Golden Square visitors proved too strong despite Kyneton’s determined efforts.

Scores were: A-Reserve: 24-35, B – 3049, B-Reserve 18-47, 17s – 12-47.

Strong play Kyneton women’s team found Golden Square too strong on Sunday, despite plenty of strong performances.
