Festival organisers were thrilled with the turn out as people excitedly cheered for a festival back to full strength after a two-year pandemic interruption.

After raising six children of her own, Castlemaine's Beryl Grey opened her heart and her home to provide a safe and loving space for some of our region's foster children.

During Foster Care Week (September 11-17) she is encouraging other local residents to consider doing the same.

Australia is facing a dire shortage of carers to support the 46,000 vulnerable children currently in foster care.

Anglicare Victoria, the state’s largest foster care agency, is in need of 90 more carers to meet demand.

Beryl, 64, cares for four young children, said it was a natural progression after becoming an empty nester.

"I saw an old school friend recently and she recalled that all I wanted to be when I grew up was a 'mum'. I love it," Beryl said.

"After my children were grown, I would occasionally mind the child of a family friend here and there, and then I took in one of my nephews for a time.

"My niece is also a foster carer in Queensland and she encouraged me to take the next step and become a foster carer."

Beryl has been a foster carer with Anglicare Victoria for almost five years now.

"They provide you with fantastic support.

There is always someone there on the other end of the line if you need them and you can opt to provide respite care, short term care or long term care.

"I cared for a young girl who was able to be reunified with her family and we still keep in touch. She recently turned 18.

"I have kept in touch with most of the kids and families I have supported. It's lovely."

Beryl is currently caring for three siblings and another young child.

When the three siblings entered Beryl’s care two of them were unable to talk and all three presented with significant learning delays.

Beryl has provided immense support through formal and informal learning activities to progress their learning and they have all made significant progress.

However, at the beginning of 2021, Beryl and her young chargers faced an obstacle when they became homeless following the sale of her home.

Due to the local rental crisis, Beryl struggled to find a home big enough for herself and the four young people she cared for.

"We applied for around 60 to 70 properties but we were unable to secure a home before the settlement. We were forced to move into a BnB in Bendigo," Beryl said.

She remained optimistic throughout this time and was supported by Anglicare

In just six weeks Wombat Forestcare has raised more than $12,000 for a campaign to stop VicForests’ salvage logging operations in the Wombat State Forest.

Spokeperson Gayle Osborne said the local community cared deeply for the forest and was greatly distressed by the damage caused by the industrial-scale extraction of the fallen timber by VicForests.

"Babbington Hill, a favourite walking location, has now been extensively altered with a large clearing for machinery and the creation of many wide tracks," Ms Osborne said.

"Further destruction will occur when the contractor returns to the area around Top Track."

Ms Osborne said most of the donations had come from the local community and showed they were very concerned about the scale of the destruction to the forest and its natural ecosystems.

"There are 175 proposed salvage logging coupes, 80 of which are in the promised Wombat-Lerderderg National Park," she said.

"It does not make sense to allow this type of operation in an area that has ecological values that deem it worthy of National Park status.

"According to the state government and VicForests, the main justification for the salvage logging is to reduce the fire risk caused by the fallen trees, however VicForests is only removing large logs and creating piles of combustible bark and fine fuels.

A large number of logs are being transported across the state for pulp."

Ms Osborne said Wombat Forestcare was supportive of proposed works by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to deal with the storm debris that posed a risk to community members seeking to use roads in event of a fire and to enable DELWP staff to respond effectively to fires that might occur.

Eve Lamb A self portrait by Castlemaine's Elizabeth Nelson has been chosen as one of the 40 finalists in Western Australia’s premier portrait prize, The Lester.

Rendered in oil on canvas, Nelson's self portrait is titled Bared and is the second self portrait the local artist has painted to make the finals of The Lester.

"I'm thrilled," Nelson said of having her work selected among the finalists for the prize.

The prestigious award, which carries a $105,000 prize pool, is available to Australian professional, emerging and young artists and is now in its 16th year.

The finalists were chosen by an independent pre-selection panel consisting of art historian Dr Clarissa Ball, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts director Amy BarrettLennard, Linton and Kay Galleries founding director Linton Partington, Art Gallery of Western Australia curatorial assistant Bahar Sayed, and Indigenous artist and designer Tyrown Waigana.

"My mark-making is a record of many moments of looking and thinking over an extended period of hours and days," Nelson

"My aim is to get into these bigger national portrait prizes. That's my goal."

Painted over last summer, Bared is Nelson's second work in a row to make The Lester finals with another self portrait also being selected for last year's awards.

She must now wait until the end of the month to discover if Bared is selected among The Lester's ultimate winners, to be announced on September 30.

After that the 40 finalist works, including Bared, will go on display at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in the Centenary Galleries over a six-week season from October 1 to November 14.

Ongoing wet weather is impacting sewer and water networks across the region.

Coliban Water is monitoring the situation at its water reclamation plants, particularly at Epsom and Kyneton.

A spokesperson confirmed there had been a number of sewer spills due to excess stormwater, including in Jeffrey Street, Kyneton, and Ellesmere Place, Malmsbury.

"We have a number of other locations that remain at risk due to the amount of stormwater that will remain in the system while the wet weather continues," the spokesperson said.

"We have notified the Environment Protection Authority Victoria about sewer overflows where necessary and we can confirm there is no risk to drinking supplies or networks.

"We are managing all spills in accordance with protocols to manage environmental risk.

"Clean-up is under way at impacted sites and we have crews across the region taking water samples and monitoring various locations."

Romsey Lancefield bus routes added Lancefield and Romsey locals will be better connected with new weekend bus services across three routes.

From October, the new routes will connect the two towns with Sunbury, Gisborne and Kyneton.

Minister for Public Transport Ben Carroll said the new offering would include Sunday services on all three routes for the first time.

“We have delivered a better bus service for Lancefield and Romsey locals, ensuring the region is more accessible and travel more convenient no matter the day of the week,” he said.

Passengers travelling on the Lancefield to Sunbury bus route will benefit from five new return services on Sunday as well as four additional return services on Saturday.

The additional services have been scheduled to allow bus passengers to better connect with trains leaving and arriving at Sunbury Station, helping provide more options for people to get to where they need to go as easily and quickly as possible.

The new Sunday services on these routes will have an identical timetable to the current Saturday timetable with one morning and one afternoon service.

The new Lancefield to Sunbury Saturday services will depart Lancefield between 8.15am and 5.25pm and depart Sunbury between 8.50am and 6.05pm, while the Sunday services will depart Lancefield between 9.35am and 4pm and depart Sunbury between 10.10am and 4.40pm.

Additional services will also be added on the route on Friday night and will depart Lancefield at 7.45pm and Sunbury at 8.40pm.

The Clarkefield Station bus stop will be removed from the Lancefield to Sunbury route on weekends only, as Sunbury Station will provide Lancefield passengers with better options to connect with trains on weekends.

The new timetables will be available on the PTV website and app from late September and will begin from October 23.

Well-known Castlemaine business Best Motors is changing hands on September 30 after trading in the one family for 53 years.

The business was originally established

by Geoff and Val Best in 1969 and son Daryl began his mechanic apprenticeship there in 1974.

Daryl and his sister Kaye have fond memories of pumping petrol in the early days for their parents.

In 1984 the enterprise became a Nissan dealership and saw the return of Daryl's sister Kaye and her husband Alan Culpitt to help in the family business. The three have run the establishment to this day.

Best Motors has also been an Avis agent for more than a decade providing a vital service to the community.

Daryl confirmed the long-running business had been sold to a Melbourne buyer and would continue to offer fuel.

"We're feeling mixed emotions at the moment. We have so many memories here," he said.

"We would like to thank all of our past and current customers for their patronage.

We must apologise because of work commitments and the quick settlement we cannot take on any more mechanical work."

After more than five decades of hard work there is 50 years' worth of memorabilia to clean out and then plenty of rest and relaxation ahead for the retirees!

A healthy community food initiative is spreading its roots in Kyneton.

The Good Food Hub encourages growing and preparing healthy food on a budget.

It is the latest venture of Kyneton Community House, which has seen a kitchen and community garden space introduced at its new High Street premises.

With the help of dedicated volunteers from Distinctive Options, the hub's backyard has been transformed into a productive and relaxing space for the community to enjoy.

The project was made possible through a Healthy Heart

of Victoria grant awarded through Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

“It’s so wonderful to see our space come together, it just wouldn’t have been possible without input from so many generous community groups and individuals," said Claire Rawlinson, KCH director.

"The Healthy Heart Project really afforded us the opportunity to get everything up and running in short order, for which we are all really grateful.”

The hub's kitchen is also now fully functioning, facilitating community lunches every Wednesday as well as KCH’s new offering, a pop-up cafe called Small Bites, on

Tuesdays from 12pm to 1.30pm.

Small Bites is run by students of the Everyday Employability Skills Learn Local program. People can pick up a delicious toastie or soup for $5 and help support the learning experience of the students.

The Good Food Hub at 35 High Street is now in full flight with many programs offered throughout the week for the community to enjoy. Informative videos and brochures are available through the Community House.

Castlemaine tradie Jeremy Forbes knows a thing or two about what it means to face your own demons.

His own mental health struggles have helped him to connect with others and remove the shame that can sometimes be associated with seeking help.

Jeremy is the founder of suicide prevention charity HALT and last week was the key speaker at Barker Trailers' R U OK? Day lunch at Woodend.

The HALT program emphasises the importance of looking out for your mates and educating people on where they can get support if they need it.

"Events like this can potentially be lifesaving and help get important conversations started," Jeremy said.

Barker Trailers' Scott Barker said the organisation wanted people to feel confident in seeking support if needed.

"Tradies are an at-risk group in that too often there is a culture of 'she'll be right, mate' and don't speak about some of their struggles," he told the Express.

"R U OK Day is important because it encourages people to take mental health seriously."

The lunch took place at both Woodend and Maryborough Barker Trailer sites last Thursday.

Woodend Men's Shed, another local organisation promoting mental health awareness, helped to serve up a barbecue lunch on the day.

Step 2. Start by saying "How are you doing?" or "I've noticed you might have been struggling a bit – are you okay?"

Step 3. Listen and be present. Don't dismiss what they are saying.

Step 4. If you think they might be experiencing suicidal thoughts, ask them.

Try to avoid saying things like, "you're not going to do something stupid are you?"

Don't try to convince them that suicide is wrong.

These approaches may seem judgemental and could shut down communica-

tion and opportunity to get support.

Step 5. Tell your mate that you care and want to help. Ask them how they would like to be supported and if there is anything you can help with.

Step 6. If they are willing to get help, make them an appointment with their GP. The GP will be able to help with a mental health care plan where they have access to counselling and other services.

Your own mental health HALT says there are many things we can do to look after our own mental health.

1. Stay physically active – go for a

walk, do yoga, get gardening – whatever is right for you to get moving.

2. Connect – talk to friends and family, spend quality time with loved ones.

3. Volunteer or give back – volunteering for your community can help you feel connected and increase your sense of value and purpose.

4. Keep your mind active – learn a skill or new hobby.

5. Stop and take notice – slow down and appreciate the little things.

Celebrating local talent

A special pop-up exhibition, Kindred, generously supported by Boom Town Wine, will bring together the talent of 11 local artists this Thursday evening.

The exhibition is the culmination of the Introduction to Professional Arts Practice course, the first of its kind run by the Castlemaine Community House.

Local artists with varied backgrounds and experience came together over the nineweek course to gain an introductory understanding of being a professional artist with co-facilitators Helen Kelly and Zoe Amor.

The exhibition will feature works by Malini Lewis, Diana Orinda Burns, Teagan Niessen, Sally-Ann Charnock, Tiffany Raae, Brenda Hine, Emma Ragheb, Luca Royle, Lorraine Le Plastrier and facilitators Amor and Kelly. On display will be printmaking, sculpture, mixed media and digital presentations through the PechaKucha platform.

Works are diverse in medium and theme and show the community spirit and the bond that artists share through collaborative engagement.

Co-facilitator Helen Kelly commented about the ‘kindred’ nature of the class.

“Zoe and I have had the privilege of working with this talented group of students who have made the ‘Introduction to Professional Arts Practice' an absolute joy. They are forming a really strong bond that will put them in good stead for their future creative endeavours,” Kelly said.

Amor and Kelly bring many years of professional arts experience as makers, producers, directors and curators. The pop up exhibition will run from 4pm to 7pm Thursday at Boom Town Wine at Shed 10, The Mill, 9 Walker Street.

Budget input for 2023/24 is opening early to the community the Macedon Ranges.

Mayor Cr Jennifer Anderson said this preliminary call for input was a great opportunity to help shape the next council budget.

"We have opened submissions earlier this year to allow sufficient time to consider more ideas the community may have," she said.

“It’s really important that the community is able to be involved in the budget process so that we can make sure what we are delivering is relevant and meaningful."

This early process is in addition to the usual budget consultation that will take place in April/May 2023.

Council's 2023/24 Budget will aim to strike a balance between providing essential services, maintaining public infrastructure and supporting our communities to recover from the impacts of the pandemic.

Submissions will be assessed by the council as part of its 2023/24 budget process.

Kyneton Art Group has been going from strength to strength, growing its membership base and offering members an array of workshops and professional mentoring.

Just last week the group celebrated success at the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival's Art Prize exhibition, with president Anna McGrath taking out the Esther Rose Memorial Watercolour Award and secretary Jenny Chester winning the Daffodil Art Prize.

"Group members put in a lot of effort and a lot of paintings this year and it's great to see locals being successful," Jenny said.

Solar rebates expanding

Eligibility is expanding for the solar panel rebate to new homes under construction.

The change will enable Victorians to save on installation costs and electricity bills from the moment they move into their newly built home.

Homeowners are expected to save up to $800 on installation costs by fitting panels as they wire the electricity to their new homes, as well as an average of $1073 each year in energy costs.

Under the changes, eligible Victorians

building homes will be able to apply for a rebate of $1400 as well as being able to access a $1400 interest-free loan to install solar panels during construction.

This financial year, there are 64,000 government rebates available for solar PV systems.

Applicants must use a Solar Victoria authorised retailer and install a product included on the approved products list to qualify for the rebate.

Operations officer Rebecca McDonald congratulates SES Castlemaine’s new controller Adam Pratt.

Adam Pratt has taken over as unit controller of the Castlemaine State Emergency Service.

Adam joined the unit in 1997 and has worked as deputy controller, operations, since 2016.

Adam is no stranger to command, being a veteran of state-wide deployments, including Mount Macedon in 2021 and Mildura in 2016.

VICSES operations officer Rebecca McDonald said Adam was an experienced member of the SES with 25 years of service in various roles that have prepared him well to take on the role of unit controller.

"Adam has extensive community links and relationships with our partner agencies and is supported by a strong unit management team with a wide range of skills," she said.

"This is an exciting time for our volunteers, and also the Castlemaine community, with plans for upgrades to the unit’s headquarters progressing well and a great group of new recruits."

Adam is planning to focus on specialisation.

"I aim to encourage our existing members to upskill in the areas of road crash rescue, land-based swift water rescue, and steep-angle rescue," he said.

These specialist pathways will also be offered to the new volunteers, as they work with Adam to plan their program of

volunteer training.

Prompted by the size of the recent intake, the new unit controller has initiated inter-agency events in conjunction with surrounding CFA brigades and local Ambulance Victoria personnel.

The SES Castlemaine Unit works closely with these agencies to assist them within their response area, during large-scale operational events and RCR operations.

A renewed focus on storm and flood preparedness is also coming to Castlemaine, as Adam plans to expand his team of community engagement facilitators.

"CEFs are important to people living on isolated properties, with research showing many don’t know whom to call, or when to ask for help in a crisis," Adam said.

"Furthermore, a community prepared in advance of an emergency can help their local SES unit to spread its resources more widely during operational events."

Volunteer members of the SES Castlemaine Unit respond to hundreds of requests for assistance each year from across the Mount Alexander Shire.

The unit responds to road crash rescues, floods, storm damage and frequently assists other emergency agencies with search, rescue and casualty extrications.

Mitchell Gleeson is growing a mullet for mental health.

The 23-year-old Malmsbury local is raising funds for the Black Dog Institute and will spend this month seeking sponsorship as he develops and sculpts his new do.

"Come September 1st, I got my hair cut and shaved the sides, and then for the duration of September I will grow the back out as much as I can and try to get as mullety as possible," he said.

"I saw a post about it and I thought 'that's a funny idea, mullets for mental health', and so I looked into it and into the Black Dog Institute, which runs it, and a lot of what they do I thought was very cool.

"At the end of the day, it's just hair, so if I can make a little bit of a difference, then off it goes."

Mitch said his employers had been surprisingly supportive of his new look.

"All of them are very on board and supportive, luckily I haven't been fired, I thought I might have been!" he said.

Mitch said the new hairdo had been "a bit polarising".

"People have said 'why did you get a mullet?' but I think that's half the battle ... and then you can explain it to them," he said.

"As far as I'm concerned the more people who ask me the better!"

Macedon Ranges Shire Council will present Victorian Seniors Festival 'celebration boxes' to 25 older residents who have made significant contributions to the community.

Council's director of community, Maria Weiss, said the Seniors Festival recognised the resilience of older people and their ongoing contribution to the community.

“This is our opportunity to say thank you, celebrate the achievements of our older residents, and recognise the important contribution they make to our local community. If you know an older person in the shire who has made a difference, make sure you nominate them,” she said.

Macedon Ranges residents aged over 65 years (or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged over 50) are eligible to be nominated for a seniors celebration box.

Nominees will be considered on the basis of their contribution to the local community, how they demonstrate active ageing and promote a positive image of older people.

Move to regional areas eases Young people are driving growth in regional economies, but the overall volume of people moving from major cities is easing, according to new data from the Commonwealth Bank and the Regional Australia Institute’s Regional Movers Index which analyses the quarterly and annual trends in people moving to Australia’s regions.

Millennials continue to make up the biggest proportion of people moving to regional areas from capital cities, although the overall number of those relocating from metropolitan areas has declined 16.5 per cent in the recent June quarter compared to the previous quarter, according to the latest quarterly Regional Movers Index.

Notwithstanding this latest quarterly decline, net migration to regions remains 30.2 per cent higher than two years before Covid-19. According to the index, Millennials made up the largest age cohort of people moving to the regions pre-pandemic, and they have increased their share since Covid-19 took hold.

Figures also show movers are getting younger. In NSW, the median age of the average regional mover fell from 37 years to 33 years pre-pandemic compared to during Covid-19, and from 38 years to 34 years in South Australia, and from 35 years to 33 years in Queensland.

Commonwealth Bank Regional and Agribusiness Executive General Manager Paul Fowler said despite the latest fall, the level of net migration still significantly outstripped the two years before the pandemic.

"Regional economies are booming, many businesses are investing and innovating to strengthen their capabilities and grow, and this is creating new employment options for jobseekers in many regional towns and cities across the country," Mr Fowler says.

"This is particularly in key sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing where there continues to be strong production and revenue growth."

Regional Australia Institute Chief Executive Officer Liz Ritchie said people are still voting with their feet and looking for the good life in regional Australia. But the recent easing of movement to the regions should take the

pressure off housing demand and provide breathing space for regions to plan for the future.

"We know people are happier when they choose a life in the regions, but investment in creating a sustainable model for regional Australia to accommodate the changing nature

of our populations trends is needed," Ms Ritchie says.

"Now is the time for a new national population plan at the federal level that considers future settlement patterns to ensure regional communities have the services and infrastructure they need to help them grow."

It’s not uncommon for dogs and cats to be nervous when visiting the vet clinic.

Some signs that they may be stressed include not wanting to get into the car, vocalising during the car ride, refusing to enter the clinic door, or hiding behind their owner or under the chairs inside the clinic.

Dogs that are feeling anxious may exhibit signs such as excessive licking, yawning, panting or drooling, trembling or tail wagging. Cats may also lick or meow excessively, flatten their ears, or hide within their carrier and refuse to come out.

There are many things we can do to make vet visits more comfortable for them, and this starts by preparing them at home.

For cats, choose a cat carrier with good ventilation and multiple access points, including a detachable top.

People often store their cat carrier in the shed and only take them out for vet visits, which can lead to the cat developing negative associations between the cat carrier and the vet. Instead, keep the cat carrier inside the house, with the top off and a comfy blanket or soft jumper in the base.

This will ensure it smells and feels familiar and safe. Prepare the car with calming music or pheromone sprays and ensure the temperature is appropriate.

Make sure your dog is secured well in the vehicle, either in a crate or with a seatbelt harness. Consider placing dogs and cat carriers on the floor to minimise motion.

Non-slip mats can help too. Finally, try not to feel rushed or stressed yourself as this may be picked up by your pet and make them feel anxious too.

Women’s Health Loddon Mallee is urging everyone to get behind this year's 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.

The regional women’s health service for Northwest Victoria has begun actively promoting the campaign that's set for November 25-December 10.

They've just released a regional 16 Days Toolkit, which includes practical tips and ideas for how groups and individuals can get involved.

It includes a suite of online campaign materials and data relating to the prevalence of violence in all 10 local government areas across the Loddon Mallee region.

Re. Tony Bell's letter ('Age of entitlement', Opinions, September 6).

I hardly understand your reasoning that people in housing crisis are entitled.

We have a shortfall of 700 affordable dwellings in the Mount Alexander Shire and nearly 90 per cent of renters in our area spend more than 30 per cent of their income on housing.

This housing crisis undermines the social fabric of our community as elders and low-paid community members are forced to leave our towns.

The lowest paid workers are in the caring economy – they are mostly women – and they increasingly cannot afford to live here.

Mr Bell you cannot seriously suggest they move to another area. Who will look after the elderly in our nursing homes, who will staff and clean our hospital, who will look after the children in childcare and in kindergarten?

The solutions to the housing crisis include more social housing, rental caps, home-sharing, releasing vacant dwellings for rental, tiny homes on wheels among others.

Most importantly working together as a community to address broader social inequality – not blaming those who aren’t as well off as being “entitled” just for wanting to live and raise their families here.

The proposed plans represent overdevelopment, concrete, harsh lines and artificial surfaces, cages and yet more floodlights. With the loss of the old established trees and the green vista, we will all avoid the area for a sense of shame.

I agree with Tony Bell that renters have more rights than property owners ('Age of entitlement', Opinions, September 6).

As a pensioner, to continue renting out my property is just being foolish.

The government reduces my pension income by 50c per $1 that I receive in rent.

With the rising costs of insurance, rates, water and regulatory inspections I'm lucky to make a profit of $1000 per year.

The requirement to fit 'open position' locks on the windows of this old home and the deadlocks on the doors makes me wonder why I should continue to provide this service for so little reward.

If only the government would assist the pensioners to rent out parts of their home and the odd rental home investment, we might alleviate the shortage of rentals in this country.

On Monday August 15, Monday August 29 and Thursday September 8 the sewerage system in Malmsbury failed and raw, untreated sewage flowed directly into the Coliban River in precisely the location that recent surveys identified as having a thriving platypus population.

These system failures are by no means a rare event and always coincide with heavy rainfall, a clear indication that the system is not fit for purpose in that large amounts of stormwater are entering the system.

Following the August 15 'spill', signs were erected at the pumping station warning the public not to 'Drink, Swim, Fish or Play in the Waterway', a clear recognition of the public health dangers. No signs were erected in the area actually affected by the spill.

This is, of course, a logical and foreseeable consequence of the popular (to some at least) push to 'regionalisation', which seems to involve opening large residential developments that overwhelm existing infrastructure.

It will be our rivers (The Coliban and Campaspe) and environment that will pay the price for the estimated 40-50 per cent increase in population in the Kyneton to Bendigo corridor predicted by 2040 and the failure of governments at all levels to plan effectively.

Hasn't he been reading the news lately?

Rents and property prices have risen right across the country. There's a lack of rental properties in the shire and there are currently a huge number of air BnBs that rob the towns of rental properties.

Large numbers of older women are very vulnerable to becoming homeless now.

Women earn less than men and often have less superannuation due to leaving work for domestic duties or from working casually and receiving a lower super rate. There's very little government housing. Tony suggests that Joy go elsewhere if there isn't anything cheap enough here. There's nowhere else to go.

Of course CW will tell us all the Kyneton Solution is not complete as the final part of the jigsaw (more irrigation) will not be in place until later this year. Which in turn will mean that to achieve the water balance required we will be looking 2024 if not later before the Kyneton Solution will be complete.

If we continue to have rain over the next couple of weeks CW will have no option but to apply to the EPA for a Section 30A. This will allow them to release C Class water down Snipes Creek because their ponds are at full capacity. A creek that they were banned from using in 2007 by the EPA. CW is in the process of having its KWRP licence reviewed. What they have put forward is inadequate. When events like this occur in the future they have water quality standards that will allow them to put low-quality water into the river. Coupled with spin such as “Under normal operating conditions”, it will mean nothing will change.

Until the CW board direct a change from producing low-quality water to a quality of water that does not threaten the environment, we will continue to receive communications from CW to advise landholders below discharge point, that they have no option but to release low-quality water into the river.

This is a disaster for the ecology of the river, ensuring more habitat loss for the iconic platypus and other native species.

Mark’s Line gets up to win at Echuca on Saturday.

Maldon-trained galloper Mark’s Line has struck a purple patch of form.

Mark’s Line, a $2.30 chance, finished well for a narrow win over 1600m on a very heavy track at Echuca on Saturday.

At his previous outing Mark’s Line won well over the same distance at Warracknabeal.

Lewis German was the rider on both occasions, earning praise from co-trainers Brian and Ashley McKnight.

As a home bred weanling Mark’s Line was passed in for a modest $10,000 and is raced by the McKnight family.

Mark’s Line has now earned $67,275 in stakes, and has a liking for soft to heavy tracks.

Kyneton With the course closed to carts, fields at Kyneton have been small over the past week.

In the monthly medal for the ladies, a tie resulted between Judy Aldred 11540-75 and Tracey Bramich 98-23-75, the former winning the daily comp. on a countback.

They will play off for the medal next month.

Aldred and Michelle Werner were NTPs. A three-person Ambrose on Wednesday went to Tom May, Robyn MacRae and John Chandler with 61.5, with Pat Clohesy, Ross Martin and Ross Foreman less than half a stroke behind.

NTPs went to Anthony DiBella (2) and David McKelvie.

LancefieldNumbers in Saturday fields at Lancefield continue to grow.

Reigning club champion led the stroke field home at the weekend with 73-3-70, with Luke Malone 90-18-72 runner-up.

After plenty of frivolity over the winter months with tams and composite course configurations for variety, the Wednesday ladies returned to the serious side of things last week.

Mount Macedon Just when everyone thought the Mount Macedon course was drying out, yet another Friday night deluge meant Saturday competitors encountered preferred lies and little fairway run.

James Semmens (26) finished +2 to be the C-grade and overall winner.

Mick Doyle (8) topped A-grade on -1, and John Dawson’s even card was best in B-grade.

Semmens, Doyle, D. Dunstan and M. Smitheram were NTPs. A few more of the midweek gentlemen emerged from winter hibernation to contest the Macedon Nursery and Garden Supplies September Mug ‘o the Month.

In A-grade (0-18) John Dawson continued his impressive form with 39 points; Mike Gorman (19) had 36 points t top B-grade.

This Saturday Drummond Golf’s Spring Cup will be contested between Mt Macedon and Romsey clubs.

Romsey Shannon Wright carded a fine 7910-69 to take out Romsey Golf Club’s September medal on Saturday.

Fairways and some of rough were cut early in the week before over 30 millimetres of rain arrived on Thursday, making conditions heavy.

Wright won the medal by four shots from four other players – Luke Lyons took out second spot on a countback with 86-16-73 with Pat Chisholm, Andrew Clement and Mitch Atlas the others with nett 73.

Scott Williams and Mick Nicholls Jnr were NTPs, and Daniel Wright had the least putts (27).

Good conditions thanks to the hard working volunteers were welcomed on Wednesday, and Darlene Baker (18) returned 33 stableford points, with Jenny Hartley (21) and Kath Jekabsons (39) both came in with 29.

Trentham The final of Trentham’s singles knockout event on Saturday resulted in a 5/4 victory for Martin Walker over Darrin McLean.

In benign conditions Alan Hopkins was able to celebrate after a hole-in-one on the fifth.

The best round of the day came from B-grade stableford winner Michael Trinder (14) with 42 points.

Gisborne visitor Lyam Murray (5) was the A-grade winner with 38 points, and Michael Hotchin led in the C-graders with 35.

There were close finishes in the women’s stroke event.

Linda Marchesi returned a nett 73 to

finished one clear of Kristen Jensen in Agrade, and Irene Kocicz took out B-grade with 74, on a countback from Trish Mann.

This Saturday, Trentham will participate in the #DoingItForJarrod cancer fundraiser.

It will also be the first round of the men’s championship event.

Woodend Extremely wet conditions led to carts being banned at Woodend last week, with all hoping for some good weather.

The sun shone on Tuesday for the stableford event, and it was the very consistent Mick Keating who took the honours.

Keating (8 handicap) returned 36 points, with Ken Turney (8) runner-up on 35, and Fergeus Nevin (11) third.

Race on for champs title

The Australian Schools Orienteering Championships will be held in Kyneton on Monday September 26.

The event will start in the Kyneton Community Gardens with participants travelling through parklands, Hurry Reserve and then to Sacred Heart College to finish.

The new croquet season has just got under way with Macedon Ranges Shire Council CEO Bernie O'Sullivan running the first hoop for Kyneton Croquet Club last Saturday.

The Kyneton Club is the oldest croquet club in Victoria and in 2026 will celebrate 150 years.

Mr O'Sullivan was given a tour of the facilities and took keen interest in hearing the club's plans for the future.

Last week was also the start of the Northern District Croquet Association Spring Pennant competition but with the extremely heavy rain during the week, many grounds were unplayable and only one match was able to be played.

Three sides make grand finals

Kyneton’s U16 girls had a strong win over Girton.

Kyneton District Soccer Club is looking forward to a big weekend with their Under 14 Mixed team, Under 16 Girls team and the Senior Women's team all making it into the Grand Final.

On Saturday morning the Under 14 Mixed team will play against Epsom Scorpions from 9.30am at Epsom Recreation Reserve.

Meanwhile, from 10am the Under 16 Girls will play against Spring Gully after defeating Golden City, 2-1 in the Semi-Final. Later that afternoon the Kyneton District Soccer Club will be hosting their Junior Presentation followed by the Senior Presentation in the evening. The following day, the Women's team will play in the Grand Final against Tatura, also at Epsom Recreation Reserve. This will be a test of f itness and mental strength for players Ava, Isha, Sian, Emma and Bronte, who play in both the Under 16s and Women's teams, with back-toback finals this coming weekend.

The winning Riddell premiership side celebrates victory.

Bill West Riddell took out the 2022 football premiership in comprehensive style on Sunday, fighting back from a 28-point first term deficit to overhaul Diggers Rest, and finishing with a rollicking eight goals in the last term to trigger ecstatic celebrations.

Entering time-on in the last term, Riddell led by eight goals, but three very late majors – the only ones all game at the northern end of the Romsey ground – reduced the winning margin to five goal.

With a very important last home and away round elevation to top of the ladder, the versatile and talented Bombers initially won the second semi-final against a fancied Wallan lineup by three goals after a memorable 10-goal second term burst, then produced the goods again in the grand final.

The ground was in good condition despite heavy rain earlier in the week, and a very large grand final day crowd was in attendance.

“We’ve picked the best team we can,” quietly confident coach Justin Belleville revealed before the match when speaking at the official luncheon where football celebrity broadcaster Brian Taylor was compere.

Riddell inclusions included Riley Paterson, Lucas Shaw and full forward Tim Walsh, who

had been out for weeks after requiring surgery.

Diggers Rest skipper Cole Laurie won the toss, and elected to kick with the advantage of a strong, swirly wind.

The Burras controlled much of the early play, and Riddell spent time turning the ball over; the coach provided some home truths at quartertime and the whole on-field scenario changed.

Dylan Tarczan took a strong mark and goaled, another came from a 50-metre penalty, and the Bombers used space and pace to advantage.

“We’ve got ‘em,” one confident player told a cavalcade of Bomber supporters as the side hit the front.

A lead of two goals at the long break was a confidence builder for Riddell, and the Burras were unable to repeat their first term dominance in the vital third quarter despite keeping Riddell to two points.

Riddell players ran and worked hard, defending strongly, and went into the last quarter just two points in arrears.

The inevitability of a Bomber victory loomed large, and there seemed to be nothing that Diggers Rest could do despite a couple of promising early forward forays.

Nathan Croft ran into an open goal, and two more majors followed as Riddell surged ahead and their supporters became more vocal.

Some brilliant passages of play occurred as the scoring was monopolised at one end of the ground for much of the term.

After the eighth unanswered goal, Diggers Rest finally broke the drought in time-on, and two more majors followed.

Many Riddell enthusiasts rushed onto the ground when the siren sounded, converging on the excited Bomber players, some of them young and on the way up, others with the type of experience needed.

“It’s been a fantastic year,” Belleville said at the after-game presentations, praising Riddell’s sponsors, supporters and families for their backing.

“Even at this level it’s tough,” he said.

Bombers’ captain and key ruckman Josh Grabham, formerly with Gisborne, was thrilled to lead a premiership side at the age of 23.

The Bombers’ coach said the club had been building towards what had been achieved and it had been “a complete team effort”.

Speedy Riddell winger Callum Williamson received the Doug McIntyre Medal for best afield.

In the earlier matches Diggers Rest accounted for Wallan in a low-scoring game that produced just seven goals, and Wallan Under 19.5s proved superior to Riddell by five goals, reversing the second semi-final outcome.

First-time premiers

The Riddell League’s A-grade grand final this season broke new ground, with both participants chasing their first-ever A-grade flag.

Woodend-Hesket defeated Diggers Rest, then Macedon, to reach the grand final, and Diggers Rest then accounted for Macedon in the preliminary final.

A large contingent of spectators watched the grand final at Romsey on Sunday, and it was the Hawks on the scoreboard first, with Diggers Rest fighting back with some on-target shooting to lead 12-10 at the first break.

There was plenty of pressure, and Woodend-Hesket managed to get within a goal of their opposition on two occasions in the third quarter.

Diggers Rest went on a scoring run to open up a handy advantage, and the two sides went goal for goal before Diggers Rest, coached by Pam Strong, prevailed 40-32.

Wing defence Anica Scherer (Diggers Rest)

received the medal for best on the court.

From a Woodend-Hesket perspective, coach Meg Grbac said she was very proud of what the Hawks had achieved, and felt a lack of consistency had been instrumental in the final.

“You have got to remember how far we have come .... we’ll come back better and stronger (next season),” the coach pledged.

Macedon claimed a premiership with a strong 33-24 victory in the C-grade final against Western Rams.

Wing defence Tayla Chamra (Macedon) received the best player medal.

The closest final of the day was in B-grade, where Diggers Rest edged out Macedon 3229.

The biggest winning margin came in the 19&Under final, where the Western Rams dominated for a 52-24 victory over Macedon, going through the season unbeaten.

Trentham’s hopes of obtaining a premiership now rests with the Reserves, narrow winners in the preliminary final on Saturday.

The Saints’ seniors were keen to play with their strengths, but trailed early and were unable to find the spark necessary to ignite.

Carisbrook dominated the second quarter and went on to secure a confidenceboosting victory heading into the grand final against Harcourt.

Overall, Trentham played some fantastic football this season, and the community is proud of the side’s efforts.

AWARD WINNERS Trentham had good reason to celebrate at the MCDFNL awards night last week, with two Saints taking out major trophies.

Congratulations to Darcy Matricardi on being Football Rookie of the Year 2022.

He returned to the Saints this season after stints with NT Darwin Buffalos and NTP Thunder.

A strong junior and premiership player at Trentham, Darcy cemented his spot in the seniors and played very well in the

mid-field and forward line.

The Max Martin Administrator of the Year 2022 went to Samantha Whitehouse, who the Saints regard as the most knowledgeable and compassionate administrator of all time.

The club would be lost without Sam, and her work does not go unnoticed and

everyone is very proud of all she contributes.

Lions to take on the Redbacks

Harcourt has defeated Natte Bealiba to set up a Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League grand final showdown against Carisbrook at Princes Park Maryborough this Saturday, September 17.

Carisbrook upset top-of-the-table Trentham to secure their spot in the big one.

Harcourt started well kicking two goals to Natte's one in the opening term and led by 11 points at the first change.

The side added two more to their tally, whilst keeping the Swans scoreless in the second stanza and at half-time had increased their advantage to 25 points.

Natte managed to peg another much-needed goal through the sticks in the third term but the Lions were on a mission and slammed on another four goals to hold a 46-goal buffer at the final change.

Natte played their best footy of the day in the fourth term kicking another three goals to match it with the Lions who also kicked another three, but in the end the Lions were just too classy and ran out winners by 41 points.

Harcourt 2.5, 4.7, 8.11, 11.12 (78) to Natte Bealiba 1.0, 1.0, 2.1, 5.7 (37) Goal kickers for Harcourt were Alex Code 3, Sam Kerr 2, Brayden Frost, Tom Stefaniw, Cameron Anderson, Kristian Bruce, Kayne Davidson and Darby Semmens.

Best for Harcourt were Darby Semmens, Brayden Frost, Paul Chaplin, Mark Noonan, Sam Kerr and Bryce Frost.

In the Reserves, Newstead narrowly lost to Talbot

ending their premiership hopes, while Trentham defeated Carisbrook by just three points.

Talbot got the jump on Newstead in the first quarter kicking two goals to one and held a slender three-point advantage at quarter-time.

Newstead lifted in the second kicking two goals, but the Hawks had all the answers kicking another four goals to extend their lead to 17 points at half-time.

The third quarter was much more of an arm wrestle with both sides managing to kick two goals a piece. At the final change the Steaders were still in touch with 18 points the difference.

Newstead pulled out all the stops in the final term kicking two crucial goals while holding Talbot to just one point, but in the end time ran out and the Roos went down by just five points.

Final scores were Newstead 1.4, 3.4, 5.5, 7.7 (49) to Talbot 2.1, 6.3, 8.5, 8.6 (54).

Goal kickers for Newstead were Nathan Webster, Tyler James 2, Joel Smith, Mark Ramsey, Brendan McDougall, Best for Newstead were Nathan Webster, Zac Tanner, Liam Bright, Des Cook, Zane Ashby and Aidan McConachy.

In the Under 17.5s Maldon's finals hopes were also dashed by Talbot by just eight points.

Maldon made a strong start opening their account with a three-goal first-quarter effort and led by 12 points at quarter-time.

In the second Talbot lifted but could not convert and Maldon kicked another goal to increase their lead to 16 points at half-time.

A revitalised Talbot returned to the oval after a rev up during the break and found that something extra smashing on four goals while holding the Dons scoreless to turn the tables and lead by 10 at the final change.

Maldon fought back in the last term, both sides managing one goal each, but the damage was done and Talbot did enough to get across the line.

Final scores were Maldon 3.1, 4.2, 4.2, 5.5 (35) to Talbot 1.1, 1.4, 5.6, 6.7 (43).

Goal kickers for Maldon were Blayne Cananzi, Noah Thompson, Bailey O'Dell, Dylan Ross, Harry Cossens.

Best for Maldon were Xavior Noy, Harry Cossens, Callum Buchanan, Bailey O’Dell, Finian MacKenzie and Charlie Baker.

Netball On the court in A Grade Avoca 47 went down to Natte Bealiba 57 and Carisbrook 33 lost to Lexton 40.

B Grade saw Natte Bealiba 38 defeat Avoca 27 and Carisbrook 38 account for Harcourt 25.

In C Grade Harcourt 46 defeated Trentham 31 and Avoca 52 accounted for Natte Bealiba 39 to make their way into the final.

The Maldon 17 & Unders 22 had a strong win over Carisbrook 8 and Maryborough Rovers 28 defeated Natte Bealiba 19.

The Castlemaine Football Netball Club's inaugural Senior Women's Football team completed the ultimate fairytale claiming victory in the Central Victoria Football League Women's Premiership at the Queen Elizabeth Oval (QEO) in Bendigo on Friday night.

The local side put on a show in front of a packed crowd kicking 5.8 (38) to defeat Golden Square 2.7 (19).

Goal kickers for the Magpies were Shelby Knoll, Jemma Finning 2 and Ella Cochrane.

This is the first year Castlemaine FNC has had a women's football side and the Castlemaine club has been proud to watch them go from strength-tostrength this season.

Bulldogs chase six flags

Gisborne Football Netball Club has six teams in Bendigo League grand finals at the Queen Elizabeth Oval this Saturday.

To have all three football teams and three netball sides with premiership chances is a remarkable performance by the southern-most club in the BFNL. Gisborne A-grade netballers went down 52-49 to Kangaroo Flat in the preliminary final on Saturday, but had reason to celebrate when star player Maddy Stewart won the Betty Thompson Medal for best and fairest in the league with 26 votes.

(Strathfieldsaye’s star midfielder Jake Moorhead won the Michelsen Medal for the best footballer in the league.)

Gisborne senior footballers survived an agonising last quarter to topple Golden Square by two points in a low-scoring preliminary final on Saturday.

It was a huge comeback as the Golden Square led by 15 points at one stage well into the last quarter; big ruckman Braidon Blake was one of the players instrumental in the Bulldogs fighting back to clinch an inspiring victory to earn

another crack at Strathfieldsaye in the grand final.

Square’s ace forward Joel Brett needed four goals to reach 100 for the season, and finished with two, plus a couple of easy misses.

From club president John Wood down, Gisborne footballers and netballers (and supporters) are looking for a great day out at the QEO. Strathfieldsaye Storm know all about winning grand finals, and Gisborne seniors coached by Rob Waters know they will face a tough battle.

Gisborne finished on top of the ladder, losing two matches, and are out to break a lengthy premiership drought.
