Romsey lager to fill pub’s void

Romsey may no longer have its pub but that hasn't stopped a new flow of local lager.

Benjamin Holmes and Shannon Wright are soon to release a beer that takes inspiration from their home town and was developed exclusively for regional and rural Victoria.

"We know the town inside and out and

we've pushed heavily to get involved to bring something out here. People have been excited. There's obviously a need and a demand and now it's just a matter of how we go about it," Benjamin said.

The two locals were among hundreds of residents devastated to see Romsey Hotel shut for the last time in 2017 and, while they couldn't reboot it themselves, they set about finding a new way to help restore the town's social scene.

"Brewing our own beer is something we've been doing for a number of years but we thought we'd better have a fair crack and start brewing seriously. Now the town's backing us to do it," Benjamin said.

With spare time during the coronavirus pandemic, the pair spent months perfecting their recipe and technique for a clean, crisp lager suitable for a distinctive clear bottle.

But during this challenging time, local businesses have proved their own worth in helping keep the region tied together. For Luke Walford, owner of Macedon Ranges Solar Power, building a family business that has strong bonds to the local community was always essential.

The Federal Budget has delivered bad news for some big-ticket items in the Macedon Ranges and Mount Alexander Shires as it moves to address the unprecedented situation of a global pandemic.

Last week's budget announced $1.1 billion for Victorian infrastructure projects, tax breaks, support for businesses employing apprentices and trainees and funds for business transition to digital technologies, but important largescale projects for the region have been set aside.

Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell said he was "bitterly disappointed" that the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct had again been snubbed despite ticking all the boxes.

"This project has been knocked back time and time again and there's absolutely no excuse," he said.

He said the project ticked all the boxes as a ready-to-go project that would boost the local economy while providing desperately needed infrastructure for the region.

"It's a shovel-ready project just waiting to go, with significant funding already committed by Macedon Ranges Shire Council and the state government, as well as widespread community support."

The sports precinct is the council's largest-ever building project and would cater for a range of sports and recreational pursuits, while also attracting regional-level competition, but needs a further $10 million for completion.

Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters voiced disappointment that her electorate, which includes Kyneton, was not mentioned once in the budget papers.

She said the budget failed to fund key local infrastructure projects including the Bendigo Airport Terminal expansion, Macedon Trails Project and sports infrastructure maintenance.

"Projects in the Bendigo electorate are needed now, not years down the line," Ms Chesters said.

"Investment in local infrastructure would have been a boost for local jobs, small businesses, tourism and the economy."

Ms Chesters said the government also failed to announce any restoring of cuts to JobSeeker and JobKeeper payments despite ongoing restrictions in many areas, including Bendigo, Macedon and surrounds.

"They're cutting away crucial support at a time when people need it the most," she said.

"Life and work is not back to normal for central Victorians. Many people are still out of work."

But the pair says their lager will not grace shelves in inner metropolitan areas - and for good reason.

"We're trying to get a bit of backing for the town and support the people from this region," Benjamin said.

"Nearly every licensed venue in Romsey is stocking Daily Lager, which is kind of cool.

That's the same for Lancefield, Riddells Creek and Gisborne.

"When people go out for birthdays or weddings, or back home, they can drink a Daily and it will be a little bit different and more exclusive."At its peak, the Romsey area is thought to have had about 18 hotels, serving as a stop-off on the way to the Bendigo goldfields.

"Every second building used to be a pub or a hotel, so it's pretty sad that we're now one of the only towns in Australia that doesn't have one," Benjamin said.

"The pub in Romsey used to be the heart

of the town so you'd go there to see people you hadn't seen in a long time or people that you'd see every day, go there to talk about the good times, the bad times and everything in between, so it's very much a social thing," "Nowadays pubs are seen as a good thing for mental health and somewhere people can go and enjoy and socialise and get away for a break. I think you're seeing the flow-on effect of that now that they are closed and locked up."

Over the next 12-18 months the business duo will be exploring options to take up a permanent residence in Romsey in the form of a brewhouse.

Shannon said they were keen to create the next Stone and Wood Brewery - a Byron Bay hot spot.

"People come from all over just to go there.

It's got a good energy - we want to capture a similar culture and feel. We really want to create something the town is proud of and bring people to this area," he said.

Mask up right!

New rules around face masks are now in force, with bandanas, scarves and plastic face shields no longer allowed.

Two weeks ago the state government said only fitted face masks would be allowed. Now, after a grace period that ended at the weekend, that rule will be enforced by Victoria Police.

Victorians must wear a fitted mask when leaving the house and this applies to all Victorians - regardless of where they live. You can still wear a shield that covers your forehead and the sides of your face but it must be worn with a mask.

The penalty for not wearing an appropriate mask is $200.

Water authority fined

Western Water has been slapped with an $8261 fine for an unlicensed discharge of Class B recycled water at Gisborne.

The spill of more than 40 megalitres, which occurred at the Willows (South of Mills Road), happened in June and was later estimated to have been leaking over a fourmonth period.

Some of the spill flowed into Jacksons Creek.

Environment Protection Authority found the corporation did not have systems in place to promptly identify infrastructure failures and take appropriate action.

EPA team leader of compliance and enforcement Paul Ratajczyk said this was a major factor in EPA taking enforcement action in this case.

"Western Water is obliged to inform EPA

if spills of this nature occur," Mr Ratajczyk said.

"Some of the spilled recycled water found its way into Jackson Creek, however, this only had limited short-term impact due to having already gone through the wastewater treatment process.

"While the environmental harm was limited, it is a condition of the EPA licence that water corporations have appropriate systems, controls and infrastructure in place to prevent spills of this nature or are able to rapidly identify and rectify issues, this was not the case in this instance.

Mr Ratajczyk said the EPA expected that Western Water should have been more diligent in monitoring of the facility and it was clear that further precautions could have been in place.

Mask update

Thank you for continuing to wear a mask to help keep our community safe from the spread of COVID-19. In Victoria, everyone aged 12 years and over must wear a mask when outside the home, unless you have an exemption. The mask must be fitted, and cover the nose and mouth.

Scarves, bandanas and face shields are no longer considered acceptable face coverings.

Free disposal of green waste

Our Customer Service Centre is open for limited face-to-face services including general queries, pet registrations and payments. Staff are continuing to respond to other customer service requests and technical queries such as planning and building enquiries by phone, email and online.

The Civic Centre on Lyttleton Street in Castlemaine is open from 8.30am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Enter via the ramp on Lloyd Street.

The Castlemaine Visitor Information Centre (VIC) on Mostyn Street welcomes back visitors on weekends between 9.00am and 5.00pm, with plans to reopen the Maldon VIC in coming weeks. Staff are available to offer assistance by phone on 1800 171 888, seven days a week.

Please stay home if you are unwell and get tested if you have any symptoms of coronavirus, no matter how mild. Make an appointment with your local GP or go to a nearby testing centre.

There is a drive-through COVID-19 screening clinic at CHIRP Community Health in Castlemaine. Testing is available by appointment for community members with symptoms of coronavirus, or who need mandatory testing before surgery. The clinic is open from 2.00pm to 4.30pm on Tuesday and Friday, and between 10.00am and 12.00noon on Sunday. Call CHIRP Community Health on 5479 1000 to make an appointment.

A hotly debated subdivision has been approved for Lancefield in its third appeal the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

The permit allows re-subdivision of three lots into 12 lots through two stages for 1.17 hectares at 88-90B Main Road despite contention over its response to town character and design.

The latest proposal sought: Stage one creating a single lot of 846m2 with an existing house fronting Main Road, with stage two creating 12 lots ranging in size from 532m2 to 900m2 with some access by an internal common property road connecting to Main Road.

In a tribute to the trucking industry of Australia and the people who have kept the wheels turning during an extraordinary year, Castlemaine Rotary Club members organisers of the Castlemaine Truck Show - have launched a photo and short story competition.

With a theme of 'People at work with Trucks', the competition is running during the month of October and the judging panel will be looking for a diverse range of photographs and short stories that celebrate the story of trucking in Australia.

Entries are invited up until October 31 from both amateur and professional photographers.

Whether you are behind the wheel, under the bonnet, washing it down, or loading it up, you and your truck could be in the running for some fantastic prizes.

A portable fridge sponsored by UsedTrucks.com.au and fuel vouchers sponsored by Lowes Petroleum Service are just a few of the rewards some lucky entrants can expect to win.

The judges will also have the important task of selecting photos and supporting 50 words to feature in a 2021 calendar sponsored by Kenworth DAF Melbourne.

Details of a 'People's Choice' vote will also be released in early November allowing trucking enthusiasts to select the coveted front cover position on the calendar.

For those without access to a truck but still wanting to support Rotary's valuable fundraising towards community projects, copies of the calendar can be pre-purchased along with tickets in an online raffle with a total value of $2200.

2020 Castlemaine Rotary Truck Show coordinator, Kerry Anderson, said the photo and short story competition was the first of a number of announcements leading up to the Castlemaine Truck Show weekend on November 28-29.

"While we may not be able to conduct our 32nd Castlemaine Rotary Truck Show in the manner we are accustomed to, we are committed to keeping the spirit alive," Ms Anderson said.

"A series of online speakers is being planned for the weekend including the announcement of the photo competition and raffle winners. Some small-scale activities are also being planned for our local trucking businesses, restrictions permitting," she said.

They could literally make the difference between life and death.

Now prolific Castlemaine author Dr Lynne Kelly has teamed up with Australia's head of the Centre for Indigenous Knowledges, Margo Neale, to produce a significant new book shedding light on these time-tested mnemonics.

Set for public release next month, Songlines: The Power and Promise weaves deeply personal storytelling with extensive research on mnemonics providing new insights into Indigenous traditional knowledge and how it might be applied today to help us thrive into the future.

"My perspective in Songlines draws on 12 years of research in a PhD and three previous books, but working with Margo added a nuance to it that I just hadn't been able to grasp before working so closely with an indigenous writer," says Dr

Songlines' co-author, Margo Neale is also senior indigenous curator and principal adviser to the director of the National Museum of Australia, and adjunct professor at Australian National University.

Like Dr Kelly, she's prolific, having authored or edited numerous books, including the Oxford Companion to Aboriginal Art and Culture.

Now she's editing the new six-book First Knowledges series aimed at deepening our understanding of indigenous knowledge across multiple vital areas, and their potential application in the present and future.

Dr Kelly and Margo Neale will feature in an online guest discussion about their new book, to be delivered through Goldfields Libraries on Wednesday November 11.

Goldfields Libraries Castlemaine manager Jess Saunders says online bookings for the virtual session will open via the library website from early next month.

The book will also become publicly available from next month.

Kelly who's internationally regarded prior works include The Memory Code.

"We've constantly talked about 'them' and 'us' but this is about 'we'.

"Indigenous people store knowledge in a complex combination of Country, song, dance, story and sacred object.

"We, in the second archive, use writing and technology.

"The third archive offers us something, without giving up anything, of using both, combining them so that on top of our way of learning with writing and technology we can add song, dance, Country, memory devices - and your world just comes to life.

The new book ties in with the National Museum of Australia's successful exhibition Songlines: Tracking the Seven Sisters set to travel to the Western Australia Museum next month before embarking on an international tour.

It's also the first book in Thames and Hudson Australia's new First Knowledges series that's being hailed as "an act of intellectual reconciliation".

Police are warning the Macedon Ranges community to be wary of a recent spate of telephone scams.

Residents have reported receiving phone calls from someone claiming the victim has an outstanding tax debt.

Often the number displayed on the caller identification is that of a local police station or other government agency, such as the ATO. The scammers reportedly ask for personal information or bank details, and in some examples request the victim purchases online music vouchers or similar products to pay supposed fines.

Police advise, if you receive a phone call requesting personal information or payment from a person representing themselves from a law enforcement or government agency: do not respond to the request and hang up, and call the institution back via a publicly listed phone number.

If you have lost money as a result of this type of scam, report the matter to your local police station.

Chicks in the Sticks is one of the North Central Catchment Management Authority’s favourite events.

Castlemaine psychoanalytic psychologist Deborah Coulthard believes a breakthrough treatment could assist sufferers of severe mental illness. findings have been very interesting and have led to incredible results.

"Those who have participated in clinical trials have reported up to a 90 per cent improvement in their symptoms," she said.

Ms Coulthard said the founders of Mind Medicine Australia, philanthropists and husband and wife, Peter Hunt AM and Tania de Jong AM, travelled to the Netherlands where psilocybin was legal to experience the treatment for themselves.

Each had issues they wished to address, one generational holocaust trauma and the other childhood trauma.

"The pair and others who have undertaken the treatment say the intensive sessions involved a 'change of consciousness'. Many say it is like undertaking years of therapy in one day. With the support of integrated therapy they were able to unpack the issues the treatment unearthed and move toward healing," Ms Coulthard said.

The couple were so passionate about their discovery they established Mind Medicine Australia and have assisted to fund Australia's first clinical trial at St Vincent's Hospital.

"What researchers have discovered is that the plant can't be abused, it is non-addictive and non-toxic," Ms Coulthard said.

The psychologist said there was a huge need for a breakthrough treatment like this in Australia given the huge number of Aussies suffering from depression and anxiety.

"This is only expected to get worse due to the impacts of COVID," Ms Coulthard said.

Lisa Dennis Castlemaine psychoanalytic psychologist Deborah Coulthard has recently opened a local chapter of Mind Medicine Australia and is inviting interested community members to join the Facebook group.

Mind Medicine Australia exists to help alleviate the suffering caused by mental illness through expanding the treatment options available to medical practitioners and their patients. It aims to establish safe and effective psychedelic-assisted treatments for a range of mental illnesses and has been leading the chorus of Aussie psychologists and supporters calling for psilocybin (magic mushrooms) to be added to the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.

Ms Coulthard said 300 submissions supporting the addition of psilocybin were submitted to the Therapeutic Goods Administration this month and a decision was expected in early 2021.

Ms Coulthard has been a psychologist for 37 years and began studying the benefits of psilocybin about nine months ago.

Ms Coulthard said recent studies revealed that used in a controlled setting the psychedelic treatment could have remarkably positive benefits for sufferers of severe depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder.

The psychologist said studies on the positive benefits of psilocybin began back in the '60s but recreational use and the stigma around drugs saw governments shut the research programs down.

A new project from Kyneton Community and Learning Centre has been awarded funding of $10,000 as part of Australia Post's 2020 Community Grants Program.

Friendship, Entertainment, Enjoy, Discover is a series of fun, inspiring and informative morning and afternoon teas designed to welcome and engage isolated and vulnerable people living in Kyneton. The project aims to develop community connection and provide information and resources of local community support.

Kyneton Community and Learning Centre is one of 79 community organisations across the country to receive a 2020 Australia Post Community Grant of up to $10,000.

This year's grants program aligns with Australia Post's commitment to supporting mental health, funding projects that help improve connection and mental wellbeing in local communities.

Woodend begins countdown to Christmas

Woodend residents are being urged to dig into their wool stashes and pull out their crochet hooks to help create the town's Christmas tree this year.

In 2019, the Woodend Traders enlisted the support of a local, Adam Bucholtz, to create a large metal-framed Christmas tree. This year's vision will see the frame cloaked in a huge crocheted blanket of individual colourful squares, each contributed by the town's residents.

Catherine Bartlett, Woodend Traders' president and owner of kitchenware store, Mort and Pestle, said the tree would play to the town's creative strengths.

"We were all disappointed to miss out on the Woodend Winter Arts Festival this year, but the town has managed to keep its artistic spirit alive with a fantastic display of yarnbombing around the library precinct and beyond," Catherine said.

"It's that creative spark that we're drawing on this year as we emerge from winter and head towards our Christmas festivities.

"We want this year to be memorable for all the right reasons, so we're joining with the community to create what we hope will be a tree that is truly 'us'."

Crocheted granny squares should measure 20cm x 20cm (8" x 8") and be bordered in green.

Words are windows or they’re walls Lucy Young

Words are windows or they're walls.

There has been much pause for reflection, and cause for concern, in these extraordinary times. I often wonder how history will tell the tale of 2020.

Last week's Midland Express ran a frontpage story about a young man, Harry, who would like to see Kyneton's Hutton street renamed. Harry recently learned that the name of the street commemorates the life of Charles Hutton, who, in 1839, killed many local indigenous people. Following publication of the article, a controversy erupted on Facebook.

When I first learned the basics of Nonviolent Communication, I had no idea that it would turn my world upside down. Five

years on, I now attempt to approach vitriol, on Facebook feeds or elsewhere, with curiosity. I have discovered that curiosity inhibits my own sense of outrage and interrupts my well-practised, well-socialised propensity towards moral judgement.

Founder of NVC, Marshall Rosenberg, believed that anything anybody said or did was motivated by a desire to meet a (universal) human need.

Dr Rosenberg encourages us to move towards others with curiosity and compassion, to look through or behind the words and expressions used in order to glimpse the (often unacknowledged) need(s) currently alive for the person. He thought that the words people articulate might be better understood as being like windows serving to reveal human needs.

For me, it's like learning a new language: I try to translate my moral judgments, storytelling and feelings into a vocabulary of needs, needs we all enjoy in common. This simple move, based on openness and curiosity, may increase the likelihood of forming a connection with another person.

It may be worthwhile taking the time, I think, to approach people's words as windows through which they are attempting to express present needs. Such a practice could help break down walls that keep dividing us and move us towards a world, of our own making, that works for all.

"You come in and you get served like you're the most important person who's walked through the door!"

Lisa also sponsors the Gisborne Genealogy Group Inc., which she helps with their family history projects.

"I bought the store because I was worried I'd have nowhere to print my photos so it was a heart decision more than a business decision," she says.

"Now it's become a big business and I wish I had more time to print my own photos!"

Two of her children have helped out in the store and one, Ashley, has come back to work full-time, so it's a true family affair.

Join the Royal family Lisa Dennis

Castlemaine's Theatre Royal launched its second annual 'Loyal Royal' membership drive on October 1 and is once again inviting community members to join the Royal family and enjoy the benefits.

The theatre team needs community support more than ever before after coronavirus lockdowns forced the shutdown of the independent cinema and live music and events. Fortunately, they have been able to keep things ticking over in the interim with their popular takeaway pizza and boutique bottle shop and recently received a $100,000 boost from the state government that will help support staffing and assist them to regenerate their live music scene.

Theatre Royal operators Tim Heath and Felicity Cripps said the inaugural membership campaign was hugely successful in 2019 and the support it received was a wonderful indication just how much people loved the historic venue.

"With the help of over 500 Loyal Royal members, we have been able to replace 15 leather couches downstairs and restore 60 cinema seats in the upper circle," Felicity said.

"We have also upgraded the stage lighting and sound system and worked with the landlords and Heritage Victoria to tile the foyer floor to heritage standards."

Tim said their landlords had been fantastic, kicking in for two rows of the new seating that was painstakingly reupholstered locally.

In early 2020, work began also to upgrade a long-decommissioned area on the second level and the landlord also has plans before council to undertake works to restore the front left-hand side of the exterior wall, which dates back to the 1920s.

"Unfortunately works to redevelop the upstairs section were put on hold due to the lockdowns but once complete the space could be utilised for a number of options, including increased restaurant seating or as a function and events space," Tim said.

This year's fundraising aims to restore the cinema seating in the left and right wings of the upper circle and an upgrade of the cinema projector.

Tim said many patrons loved the bonuses being a 'Loyal Royal' afforded such as free tickets, while others just loved the benefit of being first to learn of upcoming shows and events.

"We've got Loyal Royals right across the region and in Melbourne. Many got on board as they love live music and they wanted to be first to hear of new artists set to visit," he said.

"Our shows would often sell out within days of being announced.

"The seat sponsorship has also been hugely popular with many people buying a seat and dedicating it to the memory of loved ones, or to their children, so they are part of the history of the theatre. It's a great gift idea," Tim said.

Loyal Royal memberships start at $100 adult and $30 child and are valid for 12 months. LR memberships include discounted cinema tickets, early bird invitations to live events and special screenings, invitations to 'members only' annual party, welcome gift pack and loyalty coffee card.

Cartwheels for fun

Local country band The Cartwheels will be connecting with Macedon Ranges residents via a free online concert this month.

Kyneton Community House is hosting the event to celebrate Get Online Week and bringing some entertainment into homes.

"We decided that people need to have a bit of fun at the moment, so instead of hosting a learning event, we decided to have an online concert via zoom, so that participants could learn a bit about how Zoom works, but also have some fun," education and projects coordinator Kat Mansbridge said.

"Many of our digital learners are interested in music and mentioned they were missing being able to see live music, so we thought a gig was a great idea."

The Cartwheels are Wendy Phypers (vocals, guitar), Dave Patterson (Double

Bass) with Charley Phypers (percussion) and Howard Malkin (guitar).

They hail from Glenlyon and Malmsbury and are active contributors in the surrounding communities - particularly Kyneton.

"The Cartwheels have a country sound and have just been named as a finalist in the Music Victoria Awards best Country album category. They are a fun and engaging group to watch," Mansbridge said.

The event is part of the Be Connected project that aims to get every Australian online and it will be held on Thursday October 22, from 7.30pm to 8pm. There will be great prizes to be won just for coming along.

Platypus numbers good at Malmsbury

"Hopefully the work we have been doing to improve habitat along the river has helped, and the recent regime of environmental releases from Malmsbury Reservoir by Coliban Water has also undoubtedly been a positive for platypus."

APC biologist Dr Melody Serena said that in addition to the good news about platypus, the recent fieldwork had confirmed that rakali (Australian water-rats) were also thriving along this waterway.

This attractive native rodent, which in many ways is the Aussie equivalent of a small otter, was found at four of the five survey sites.

"While it is great to see such positive results, we still need to continue the tremendous work that is already being done by the landcare group and others to improve environmental conditions along the river," Ms Serena said.

"Getting conditions right for platypus is a big plus for all the other animals that share its aquatic world."

Eight platypus - six males and two females - were recorded during a recent trapping survey along the Coliban River at Malmsbury.

All were in good condition and were released back to the wild after being examined by researchers from the Australian Platypus Conservancy, assisted by members of Malmsbury District Landcare Group who funded the study.

Malmsbury Landcare president John Walter noted that platypus were encountered at all five of the sites where nets were set.

The trapping area sampled three kilometres of river channel, from the Malmsbury viaduct to just below Ellis Falls.

The findings were similar to a survey carried out by the APC in the same area in 2001.

This outcome was particularly welcome given concerns by a number of residents that platypus sightings were not as frequent as in the past.

A recent (2019) eDNA survey confirmed the presence of platypus at Malmsbury but could not provide any information about the size or health of the population.

CHIRP Community Health's local walking groups have returned as COVID-19 restrictions ease.

All CHIRP's exercise groups ceased in March this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Some groups briefly resumed in July but stopped again when the second wave of infections occurred.

With an easing of restrictions in regional Victoria, it is now possible for outdoor groups of up to 10 people to start meeting again.

It is essential that all group participants wear a face mask or covering, use hand sanitiser and maintain physical distancing. It is also important that participants stay at home if unwell.

The Castlemaine, Maldon and Harcourt walking groups have already started again with infection control precautions in place.

The Castlemaine group meets on Thursday mornings at the Botanical Gardens. The Maldon group meets on Tuesday and Friday mornings at Maldon Neighbourhood Centre, and the Harcourt group meets on Monday and Thursday mornings at the Harcourt ANA Hall and Museum.

Nordic Pole walking groups, run in partnership with Castlemaine Community House, are also resuming, but all groups are currently full.

CHIRP allied health and wellbeing manager Deb McCarthy said these exercise groups provided an opportunity for regular gentle exercise as well as social interaction.

"Staying socially connected and physically active are both very important for health and wellbeing," Ms McCarthy said.

Call to young leaders Made up of up to 12 young members selected from across the Macedon electorate, the group will meet five times over the year to discuss local issues, learn about the democratic system and how they can more confidently participate in the decision-making processes.

A visit to Parliament House in Melbourne is also included as part of the program of activities.

In 2018, Ms Thomas made an election commitment to establish the Macedon Youth Council.

The inaugural program began in 2019, with 13 young people from across the electorate chosen to participate.

Young people aged 16-22 are encouraged to step up for the 2021 Macedon Youth Council.

The youth council is designed to empower young people to play a more active role in public life - it provides participants with the opportunity to build their understanding of government and the role and responsibilities of a member of parliament.

Illegal reprisal Captain Hutton was a ‘responsible individual’ directly linked to the Campaspe Massacres carried out in league with Capt.

G.B.Smyth and his troopers. Assistant Protector of Aborigines for the region, Charles Parker, described the massacres as a “deliberately planned illegal reprisal”.

George Robinson described Charles Hutton and his attitude to the blacks in his journal of January 24, 1840 thus: “Mr H avowed [his approach to the natives] to be terror to keep the natives in subjection by fear, and to punish them wholesale, that is by tribes and communities. If a member of a tribe offend, destroy the whole.

He believed they must be exterminated”.

I do not believe Harry Byass (‘Tarnished by blood’, Midland Express, October 6) seeks to ‘re-write’ history; the history already exists. What is needed is a re-appraisal of a traditional histiography in which dispossession and frontier violence is seen as collateral damage in the expansion of white settlement carried out in a ‘pioneering spirit’.

‘Generally the violent history of western Victoria has been repressed and many people who were in effect murderers have been honoured by memorials to pioneers and by street and town names.’ Ian D. Clark: ‘Scars in the Landscape’.

Finally, it must be asked why Hutton was chosen as a Kyneton street name in the first place. Yes, he was a squatter but he arrived at Campaspe Plains in July 1838, moved to Flowerdale in 1840, Merri Creek in 1842 and by 1855 was back in England. His connection to the land could be said to be on a par with that of the Daung Wurrrung or Dja Dja Wurrung.

A review of street names merits serious consideration.

Congratulations to Harry Byass for opening up a truthful discussion of Kyneton’s history (‘Tainted with blood’, Midland Express, October 6).

Mr Byass has raised important questions about who and what should be commemorated in calling for changing the name of a street named after an early settler implicated in one or more massacres of the district’s original inhabitants.

Victoria’s colonial settlers were some of the most efficient in ridding the country of our original inhabitants. The colonists and their fears and struggles are well recorded and remembered in books and place-names.

On the other hand the earliest inhabitants are scarcely remembered and rarely commemorated. Their sites were obliterated and their names forgotten. It would be right to remember those people whose care for the land made it so attractive to settlers and whose land-management practices could teach us much about how we can still care for this fragile land.

We were interested to see an advertisement in last week’s Midland Express, urging the community to elect a “forward-looking council” (Make Your Vote Count’, advertisement, page 11).

The advertisement only includes a Mornington contact and we are not familiar with the authoriser or who they represent.

Instead of recognising us as current serving councillors we were given symbols next to our names, suggesting that our heads are in the sand. We are unsure on what matters our heads are deemed to be in the metaphoric sand.

At no stage has this anonymous group reached out to us to discuss our values and visions for the shire, when we are aware that other candidates have been contacted.

Who is behind this group? On what basis

are they recommending candidates? What outcomes are they seeking?

We three candidates are proud of our council records, and we are open and transparent about our achievements, and what we stand for in the next term.

We have voted differently to each other on many occasions, but we have always stood up in council meetings to state what we have considered in coming to our decisions.

We encourage every voter to ask candidates questions, read their material, look at prior council meetings recorded on council’s website, and consider who will best represent the issues that are important to you.

Beware anonymous influence John Shaw, Woodend I write to express my concerns about the upcoming Macedon Ranges local government election. A half page ad (‘Make Your Vote Count’, page 11) has appeared and it seeks to influence how you and I vote.

It is authorised by a Mornington resident who operates a marketing company. The ad directs you to a website - Macedon Ranges Life. In the section ‘who are we’ the answer given is ‘a concerned group of residents’ - no names, totally anonymous.

My worry is that our new council could well be composed of individuals who have been funded, aided and abetted and willing to do the bidding of this anon group of monied, self-interested people.

The outgoing council has been a vast improvement on the boys’ club/bloc voting/ single-interest council that preceded it.

Councillors generally have been diligent, well informed, consistent and most importantly - independent.

The ad seeks to get rid of three councillors - Jennifer Anderson (West Ward), Natasha Gayfer and Henry Bleek (East Ward).

This group includes women who have been the leaders in intelligent and considered decision making.

The City of Casey’s experience of wealthy property developers installing their own stooges on council should make all of us run a mile from the above-mentioned similar group.

Be wary of slick, anonymous marketing companies purporting to have residents’ interest at heart.

Are council candidates independent?

Neil Barker, Romsey As our council elections draw closer, it's worth reflecting on whether those seeking office are genuinely independent or have political affiliations.

While some should be congratulated in being open about them, others are reluctant to do so, as they see this as a disadvantage to their electoral prospects.

Ratepayers should not be naive to the fact that many candidates are well financed, are not independent, or have alliances with very specific interest groups that do not reflect the needs of the shire, its pristine environment, its heritage or its people.

They do not want candidates who are influenced by specific interest groups who may well play a part in decisions that are favourable to the ideologies, or the profit motives of their donors.

They want people who will represent everyone.

Under the Local Government Act 2020, candidates are not required to disclose political affiliations, and are not required to disclose donation returns until well after the election date.

Hanging in the balance Amanda Millar, Mount Macedon As we approach the local government elections, it has not gone unnoticed that the fate of Hanging Rock remains in the balance.

Locals were spooked when Macedon Ranges Shire Council called a ‘Special Meeting’ meeting behind closed doors on May 1, 2020 to discuss “the sale of the East Paddock at Hanging Rock”.

East Paddock was purchased by the Shire of Newham and Woodend as a gift to the people of this area and to protect the Rock from development.

Many will remember that in 2014 the Napthine state government signed a contract with the MRSC to secure the rezoning of East Paddock to prevent future commercial development.

Concerningly the money has been spent but the promised rezoning has never occurred. East Paddock remains at risk from the next ‘make a buck’ or ‘job creation’ scheme that may come along.

Including East Paddock within Hanging Rock Reserve may not of itself be harmful but East Paddock must first be rezoned as promised to ensure that the state government does not immediately move to build a big concrete monstrosity as the community opposed in 2014.

I for one will not vote for any councillor who will not commit to delivering the contracted protection for East Paddock.

That, combined with winding back the out of control suburbanisation of our treasured local villages, should be front and centre for anyone who cares about the future of this area to ensure that future generations can enjoy what is unique about this part of Victoria.

A cautionary tale Susan Mayfair, Castlemaine Some years ago I shared a hospital room at the Austin with a woman from Seymour. She was a sheep farmer, small holding, and was saying how fortunate we are up here to still have that old town feel about the place.

This woman told the following cautionary tale: The council in Seymour had bumbled along for years when a new lot of developers, heavy machinery excavators and real estate agents got onto council to shake things up a bit.

It seems that after trips to the Peninsula, Torquay in particular, this new lot thought the look of the plate glass, white and chrome shopping strip with paved footpaths brought in a better class of tourists down there, judging by their cars, who spent up big. With their best intentions, stating that everyone could make a quid, they demolished as many of the old historic buildings that they could and replaced them with plate glass, white and chrome brand new shops. I didn’t ask her about the paved footpaths.

Tourism and people driving through the town dropped 90 per cent. House prices halved. There are a lot of reasons people flock to Torquay, Port Phillip Bay being a big one of them, something that Seymour is sadly lacking.

A cautionary tale indeed about tourists really, really liking old stuff. Aren’t we lucky we still have so much of it left!

While many runners are content to focus on doing their best over one distance there are some who are prepared to go a bit further.

Spring brings a delightful frenzy of new foliage, beautiful flowers, sowing and growing. There is a growing trend, from all reports, that growing food is the choice of people keen to take to the garden in 2020.

Try strawberries and lemons. They are really useful fruits to have on hand, look great in the garden landscape and are enjoyable to grow.

Spring strawberry care Strawberries are a fantastic fruit to grow at home, whether in a garden bed, pot or hanging basket. You can help promote thriving and productive strawberries this month by providing them with lots of nutrients and ample moisture.

Feed each week with something such as Yates Thrive Strawberry and Berry Fruit Liquid Plant Food. And keep the soil or potting mix moist with regular watering.

Applying mulch, such as lucerne, pea or sugar cane straw, around strawberry plants will help to conserve soil moisture and also keep the fruit clean and off the ground.

Pick strawberries regularly to help promote an extended harvest. You may need to protect ripening berries from hungry birds with bird netting or a wire cage.

Meyer lemons Meyer lemon (Citrus limon 'meyer') is a hardy lemon that can produce lots of fruit over much of the year. The decorative yellow juicy fruit is sweeter and less acidic than other lemons such as eureka and lisbon so is perfect for juicing.

Meyer lemons can grow up to 5m tall or around 2.5m for dwarf grafted trees, which

are ideal for growing in smaller spaces and also pots. They'll grow in all but the coldest areas and do best in a spot that receives at least six hours of sunshine a day. In addition to the bright yellow fruit, meyer lemons also have glossy green leaves and sweetly perfumed white flowers in spring, so they're both beautiful and delicious!

Spring is an ideal time to plant a new citrus tree like a meyer lemon. When planting citrus into containers, choose a well drained pot that's at least 40cm in diameter and use a good quality potting mix. Ask at your local nursery what it recommended.

When planting a new citrus tree into the ground, mix something like Yates Dynamic Lifter into the bottom of the planting hole. Yates Dynamic Lifter improves the quality of the soil and supplies the newly planted lemon with gentle, organic nutrients as it establishes.

Keep the new tree well watered, particularly during its first summer. It's also beneficial to apply a few centimetres of mulch over the soil (or potting mix) surface, which will help the root zone stay moist.

Keep the mulch a few centimetres away from the trunk to allow good air flow and reduce the chance of collar rot disease.

Lemons, like other citrus, are heavy feeders and require lots of nutrients to support all the foliage, flowers and developing fruit. While trees are flowering, growing new foliage or carrying fruit, feed every eight weeks with a food your nursery experts recommend.

Inspiring a new generation of garden lovers Think espalier and you think of Europe with its grand historic gardens. Espalier - the art of training fruit and other trees to grow in almost two-dimensional patterns along a trellis or a wall - goes back to Roman times and was perfected during the Middle Ages.

Thankfully Victorians don’t need to travel further than Tylden to see world-class examples of this classical gardening technique.

Spring Hill Nursery and Gardens at the corner of Trentham and Springhill Roads in Tylden boasts seven espaliered fruit trees - a cherry, three pears and three apples - that are now almost three decades old. Their shape and beauty are the product of hundreds of hours of careful pruning.

For Georgie Kent, whose family has recently taken over Spring Hill from its founders, Glenn Boxshall and Sandy Mitchell, the espaliered trees, neighbouring orchard and formal gardens are a daily inspiration - and education. Georgie is studying horticulture.

“The chance to work in this unique nursery and garden every day and talk about plants with people from all over the region about what works here and what doesn’t, is better than any classroom,” she said.

“The great advantage we have is that our customers can go for a walk in our large gardens and see what the plants we sell look like when they are mature.

“For most of the people who come here, this is an experience, not just a plant buying mission. They like to spend time here, to talk. That is why we are opening a café in the nursery in the next few weeks - so our customers can take their time, meet up with friends and make their decisions about their gardens in comfort.”

Spring Hill Nursery and Garden has everything from trees to hedging plants, shrubs, roses, seedlings and seeds, as well as a wide range of gardening products and garden features and furniture. Like other nurseries across Australia during the pandemic, it’s seen a big rise in demand.

“Gardening has been important in this region for a long time but since lockdown the demand has increased faster than plants can be produced. Fortunately, we have a wide range of suppliers and are constantly looking for new ones,” Georgie said.

“Apart from the traditional trees, hedging plants and shrubs like camellias and magnolias -

which are still very, very popular - we are seeing increased demand from people who want purely native gardens.

A virtual garden show in the Macedon Ranges has grown a strong following with plans in place for a second event.

The Macedon Ranges Plant, Cutting and Seed Swap and Giveaway's spring virtual garden show emerged from a social media group that formed at the end of last year.

Convenor Kylie Swain said the competition, judged last week, attracted 581 entries across 28 categories.

As a result of an increased understanding of homeostatic processes, the concept of transition feeding has evolved from one focused on only control of milk fever to an integrated nutritional approach that optimises * Rumen function * Calcium and bone metabolism * Energy metabolism * Protein metabolism * Immune function There are four aims of transition cow management. Cows should be managed so as to reduce disruption to the rumen, minimise mineral deficiencies, provide sufficient energy around calving and avoid immune suppression.

Monitoring for profit The National Sheep Health Monitoring Project run by Animal Health Australia has, from a third of all slaughtered sheep over a 12-month period, collected information on health conditions that either affect the productivity of the sheep, or cause carcases to be trimmed during processing, both of which impact profitability for the producer.

AHA's senior manager of biosecurity, Dr Rob Barwell, said the NSHMP continued to deliver value to the thousands of properties whose sheep had been inspected over the 12 months.

"In 2019 9.57 million sheep were monitored, across 42,000 separate lines from 9600 individual PICs," Dr Barwell explained. The NSHMP monitors for 19 conditions automatically when sheep are consigned to participating abattoirs, plus Johne's disease on request by producers. Producers are then able to access the health data of sheep they have consigned to the abattoir through the Livestock Data Link portal - managed by

Integrity Systems Company - using their NLIS login details.

"The conditions we monitor for are endemic in many regions of Australia and can hit you in the hip pocket, though you might never see signs or symptoms on the farm," Dr Barwell explained.

"What this means in practice is that carcases and offal must be trimmed or condemned at the plant, meaning less money paid to you.

"By knowing when and where these conditions are impacting sheep, and feeding that information back to flock managers, we can improve liveweight gain and limit wastage, which is good for everyone."

Landcare Australia has announced a threeyear partnership with iconic Australian brand Country Road who have committed $600,000 over three years to support the conservation of Australian farming landscapes.

This unique partnership will come to life through biodiversity restoration projects across Australian farmlands, with support from the Australian cotton industry.

The initial project will be implemented by the Kahl family in the Namoi Valley, NSW - a region significantly affected by biodiversity loss and in need of restoration. Prominent third generation cotton farmers, the Kahl family will participate in the program by revegetating a river system that flows through their property.

Benefits of the project will include increased habitat and shelter for native animals, reduced erosion along the river bank, improved water quality and enhanced biodiversity.

Landcare Australia will receive funding for the project as a result of Country Road contributing a minimum of $600,000 to the partnership over three years, via a corporate contribution and funds raised through the sale of its famous Verified Australian Cotton Heritage Sweats. The funding will provide Landcare Australia with the means to conduct multiple biodiversity projects in the region and invite more Australian farmers to participate in the program.

Having read the article ‘Future Gisborne?’ (Midland Express, September 22), it occurred to me that rural slums do just as much to harm our environment as commercial development. By ‘rural slums’ I mean slabs of land broken up into small blocks with single-storey houses occupying most of the area.

Councils should insist that all residential building blocks contain at least one third cultivated green area. Increased living space could be provided by more two or more storey houses. There is nothing wrong with multi-level building as long as enough cultivated green space is around it.

By ‘cultivated’ I am not talking about paving and pebbles, either!

Victoria used to be called ‘The garden state’. Let’s make it happen again! Come to think of it, why couldn’t this apply to commercial properties as well?

My involvement in the Traffic Light Voting Guide investigation has been fuelled by a long-held concern among the Forum for Democratic Renewal assessment team about the corrupting influence of land banking speculation across the Macedon Ranges.

Our community needs to elect a council that will take its head out of the sand and stand up to any so-called 'developers' whose greedy intent is to take advantage of the huge windfall gains that can flow from rezoning of land adjacent to town boundaries.

There has always been a problem with corruption associated with individuals tempted by the Lotto-sized bonanzas flowing from the rezoning of land by local councils. The recent fiasco in Casey is a good example.

If we are to keep propriety in mind at a local level, we must not allow our council to be influenced by people who stand to be gifted millions of dollars as a reward for perpetrating Melbourne-style urban sprawl on us and at the expense of our beautiful region. I urge everyone to vote traffic light so we can shut the gate on inappropriate development.

We need a community wide conversation about how we can enhance the 'liveability' of our towns while at the same time increasing their population. Innovative infill development is a far more attractive alternative to serving our community and environmental needs than the prospect of wall-to-wall detached dwellings. We need to distinguish between legitimate profits from the business of development, and land banking greed.

At election time it’s interesting how people talk so much about the importance of transparency, that is until it applies to me!

We have all received a range of election materials in our letterbox in recent days including one from the ‘Forum for Democratic Renewal’ who very kindly provided their assessment of candidates and recommendations on how we should vote.

I have asked the group on their Facebook page several times, to provide the responses from all candidates to the great questions put to them, so that we can all make up our own mind on how they answered and vote accordingly.

These requests have been refused so we have to rely on recommendations from a largely unknown group of people without any information on how their assessment and recommendation was made.

If we are not able to make up our minds based on complete information it seems to me the Forum for Democratic Renewal is not about renewal of our democratic system, but more about who controls the message and simply replacing the current system with their own version of democracy.

A bid for the Central Victorian Goldfields (or Golden Triangle) to gain - 'World Heritage Listing' (Midland Express, September 15), which are considered among the best in the world, if successful could result in a second gold rush for the region.

Over the years many of our railway lines have been either dismantled or closed or rail-passenger services withdrawn, with the scenic 'Great Southern Railway' being the latest to go.

In some respects the CastlemaineBallarat line could be likened to the longclosed 'Centre Circle Railway', which if still in service today would be much appreciated.

A restored Castlemaine-Maryborough rail line would provide for a direct 'Rail Pass' service between Bendigo and Geelong, serving five of the largest regional towns in Victoria, with a combined population exceeding 400,000 people.

As the rail lines pass through the scenic Central Victorian Goldfields region, the introduction of a 'Tourist and Travellers Train' (with accommodation for bicycles) would create much interest with the tourists. Travelling on a day tour from Melbourne to Melbourne with perhaps a stop to view the magnificent Ballarat and Maryborough Stations and also the lovely heritage Castlemaine Station then on to Bendigo and return direct to Melbourne.

Too much time wasted Mary-Anne Thomas, Member for Macedon As residents across the Macedon Ranges get ready to cast their vote in the upcoming council elections, it's important to reflect on council's responsibility to Hanging Rock.

More than two years ago, council signed up to a 50-year strategic plan in partnership with the state government and Traditional Owner groups.

The community has consistently sought the incorporation of the East Paddock into the Hanging Rock precinct.

This ambition has long been supported by the Andrews government, with a commitment to purchase the site and $3 million to begin implementation of the strategic plan.

It is very disappointing that this sale has not been finalised because of council's unwillingness to settle on a fair and reasonable price.

Too much time has been wasted, and I will be calling on the new council to transfer the East Paddock to the Crown.

After all, it already belongs to the people.

Such a move would ensure that the $3 million is used to deliver new environmental protections, greater recognition of the Rock's Aboriginal cultural significance and better facilities for our community to enjoy.

It's time for council to treat Hanging Rock with the respect it deserves.

Eagles at Lancefield Saturday's stableford event at Lancefield Golf Club was remarkable in more ways than one.

Mason Memmolo scored two eagles (three shots on the par five second and sixth holes) and finished up with 41 points, to take out the A-grade award.

But Memmolo did not produce the day's best round! This came from C-grade winner Patrick O'Meara with 43 points.

Andrew Hall was best in B-grade with 39.

Monthly medal day for the ladies on Wednesday resulted in another medal for Kaylene Cruise with 102-30-72, from Jenni Vennell 102-26-76.

Legends' trophy winner last week was Ross Farrar with 89-15-74.

Holland new president Glen Holland has been elected as the new president of Lancefield Golf Club.

He takes over the reins from Jodie Kefford, who served as president for the past two years.

Ed Godek, who lives near the golf course, is vice-president.

Little aths is back

After months with hardly any community sport, Kyneton's oval will buzzing from the end of October with the sound of the return of Little Athletics.

In its 50th year, Kyneton Little Athletics will take on 2020/21 season with a modified COVID-safe program starting on Saturday October 24 at 9am.

The club's president Ashley Fraser is optimistic about the upcoming season.

"As a sport we are in a very unique position - as we finished our domestic competition last year Victoria was put into lockdown and as our new season starts we are slowly coming out of the second wave of restrictions so we are hoping the pandemic will not have too much of an impact on us," Ashley said.

The only thing that the club was not able to do at the end of last season was to have its usual presentation of awards so there are plans to do a drive-through presentation on Saturday October 17 at the Kyneton Showgrounds which will be combined with an information session for new families who are interested in finding out more about Little Athletics.

The season will run until the end of March 2021 and with many children and young people having been stuck at home with no organised, sport the club is hoping that there will be an increased interest in athletics as a way to get people moving again and working on their fitness.

"Last year we had 131 members ranging from aged five to 16," said Ashley.

"This year we are introducing a senior squad for teenagers where they will be able to choose which activities they concentrate on so we are hoping it will appeal to more people including those wanting to stay fit in their off season if they usually do other winter sports such as football and netball."

A wide range of track and field events will be covered every Saturday morning at the Kyneton Showgrounds - sprint and middle distance running, hurdles, jumps, shot put, discus and javelin. Coaching is provided both to the

Donald and George ‌ what a day!

For Kyneton trainer George Osborne, there have been plenty of unforgettable days spread across a training career spanning nearly three decades, in three different states.

One of these occurred at Donald racecourse last week, when Osborne saddled up an astonishing double which stunned form followers.

The biggest surprise came when $101 chance Melisandre Rossa, having her second start for Osborne after not having raced for 14 months, narrowly won the

Donald & District Community Bank Maiden Plate, 1350m, for gallopers four years old and upwards.

This was only the five-year-old mare's fourth race start, having previously been trained by Matt Laurie, and she improved dramatically on her run at Kyneton in September.

"I needed a good, strong rider. He'll get another ride for me," the Kyneton trainer said in praising Jason Maskiell for his effort in getting the mare home in a photo to edge out Boom Boom Sweet.

A nine-event race meeting is to be held at Kyneton today (Tuesday).

The first race takes place at midday, and the final event is at 4.35pm.

As from yesterday, racehorse owners who reside outside metropolitan Melbourne were given the chance to attend Victorian meetings where they had a horse engaged.

Strict segregation of owners will apply due to COVID-19 protocols, but the move to relax the total ban on owners has been welcomed.

Country Racing Victoria chief executive, Scott Whiteman, said the relaxation was terrific news for country racing and the many racehorse owners located throughout the regional areas of Victoria.

"Our country clubs look forward to welcoming owners back to their race days and beginning the journey towards welcoming more people back to enjoy a day at the races in the future."

Racing Victoria reaffirmed that all owners, regardless of where they resided, remained prohibited from attending licensed premises (stables) and training centres across the state at all times.

33-week spell, with her last win coming at Tatura late last year.

Swizzle Sticks has now chalked up four wins from 24 starts, taking her earnings to $76,689.

If the Osborne double was a talking point, so was the quirky situation that saw a horse called Trumphouse racing at Donald, and being well fancied, but failing to meet expectations after a close second at Sale.

No, Trumphouse, trained by Rob Hickmott, did not come out of a White House, but rated a mention due to the ongoing presidential race in America.

Ex-AFL star to coach Tigers High-profile former AFL triple premiership player Paul Chapman will coach Kyneton senior footballers next season.

Chapman, 38, is now a Macedon Ranges resident and is thrilled to join the Tigers after coaching Werribee Districts and Greenvale Jets since retiring from the AFL with a record of 280 senior games (251 with Geelong and 29 with Essendon) behind him.

The strong and versatile forward and midfielder was twice an All-Australian, won a Norm Smith Medal, and was in three AFL premiership sides with the Cats.

Kyneton's football manager Nathan Thompson, also a former AFL player who grew up in Kyneton, said the club was thrilled to obtain the services of Chapman, whose appointment was announced earlier this month.

Travel and work commitments led to Chapman resigning from the coaching job at Greenvale - in the top tier of the Essendon and District Football League - in 2019.

He had taken the Jets to the 2018 grand final.

Chapman will instantly be one of the highest profile coaches in the Bendigo League next season, and he is particularly keen to build on the young talent in the Tigers' ranks to maximise their potential.

Kyneton is currently seeking Reserves and Under 18 boys' football coaches, describing the roles as fantastic opportunities to work alongside the new senior coach.

With the COVID-19 pandemic ruining the 2019 season, the Tigers hope to be full of enthusiasm and ready to go and make an impact in the BFL in 2020.

NETBALL COACHES The Tigers are currently advertising for expression of interest in netball, with priority to obtaining a knowledgeable netball director.

Coaches for the A, A Reserve, B, B Reserve and 17&Under netball teams are also being sought.
