Servo plan revealed

Plans for a McDonalds restaurant and multifaceted 24-hour service station for Kyneton's northern gateway have been revealed.

A stand-alone McDonalds restaurant and drivethrough is proposed for the Pipers Creek Road and Edgecombe Road corner along with a 26-space car park and associated signage.

A service station with a convenience store, trucker's lounge and second - yet to be identified - convenience restaurant with drive-through would also occupy the site, which has a southern interface with Post Office Creek.

The service station would include an 86-space car park with five truck bays located along the southern boundary.

The 22ha Edgecombe Road site contains two areas split by Pipers Creek Road that are zoned for commercial and rural living.

The application is the second anticipated in a proposed major three-part development for the area.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council approved a 43-lot subdivision for Edgecombe Road in December while a third application is expected early this year for a

large trade supplier.

Consultant for the applicant Rob Milnar explained to councillors in December that the application had been intentionally made in three parts to enable work to begin on less controversial elements.

He said the 43-lot subdivision, now approved, was seen as the "relatively uncontroversial part of the application" and they anticipated other parts of the application may be "more controversial".

The application is now on exhibition and open for public comment.

Drink-driver endangers child

A 31-year-old drink-driver with baby-on-board returned a breath test of 0.216 after colliding with safety barriers on Melbourne-Lancefield Road, Monegeetta, on December 18.

The woman told police she lost control of her car, reaching for a dummy for her five-month-old baby, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle.

Her car was towed, her licence suspended immediately and she was processed for drink driving and other trafficrelated offences. DHHS have also been notified regarding the safety and welfare of the baby.

Man airlifted after Rock fall

Paramedics airlifted a man involved in a fall from the summit of Hanging Rock on December 21. The man in his 20s was assessed at the scene for suspected upper body injuries after falling about four metres. Local SES members were called to assist with the rescue and got the man to a small plateau for the rescue.

CFA brigades from Tylden, Carlsruhe and Kyneton were quick to respond to reports of a hedge fire surrounding a home on Central Road in South Kyneton last Monday.

The fire was believed to be a burn off that got out of control.

Strong winds could have seen the fire impact the home just metres away but fast action under the command of the Tylden brigade captain avoided the flames spreading further.

Police attended to investigate the alleged burn off.

A maximum public attendance of 1000 was permitted, and racegoers were separated from industry participants.

After being deprived of the chance to attend race meetings for months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, spectators were able to be present at the six-event meeting held at the Kyneton racecourse on Friday.

The annual New Year's Day race meeting is usually held at the famous Hanging Rock venue, but it was decided it was more practical to race at Kyneton with some pandemic restrictions still in force.

A maximum public attendance of 1000 was permitted, and racegoers were separated from industry participants.

Race Day packages were sold out in advance of the meeting, with attendees pre-registered.

"Everybody seemed happy to be able to get out and enjoy themselves today," said Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club general manager Jon Dight.

The meeting ran smoothly with placid weather conditions, and the course broadcaster issuing an occasional reminder to attendees to observe social-distancing rules.

Some of the racegoers were racing club members and others who traditionally enjoy New Year's Day out at 'The Rock'.

It was a non-TAB six-event meeting, with small fields the order of the day and several scratchings.

Kyneton trainer Danielle Chapman won the first event with promising three-year-old Snappy Magnus, and Sutton Grange galloper Eitilt won the final event for Brent Stanley in the closest finish of the day.

AUSTRALIA DAY MEETING Dight said a decision was "still pending" on whether the club would be able to conduct its drawcard Australia Day meeting at Hanging Rock.

"There are a number of factors to be weighed up," he said, indicating an announcement was likely in the next week.

The Australia Day meeting, featuring the 2021 Hanging Rock Cup, is listed for Tuesday, January 26.

Also looming is the club's Woodend Cup meeting, to take place at Kyneton on Saturday, January 30.

After the last race, the course commentator told patrons: "There's a big chance of being back here on Australia Day."

Permit to cross border

Primary producers and agriculture workers will be allowed to travel between states for work with special issue permits with the border now closed between Victoria and New South Wales to stop coronavirus spread.

Effective immediately, all agriculture workers who live and work between the two states can apply for a permit to cross borders to keep the food and fibre supply chain moving.

These arrangements will apply to agriculture workers with the same safeguards as workers in the freight and essential services industries.

"Many of our agriculture workers need to cross the border to perform their vital work - these permits will allow that to happen while keeping our state safe," Minister for Agriculture Mary-Anne Thomas said.

"We're backing the food and fibre industry in these challenging times - I urge anyone needing support to get in touch with Agriculture Victoria as a first port of call."

Permitted agriculture workers entering Victoria must wear a face mask in all public places, get regularly tested for coronavirus, self-quarantine when not working and only leave their accommodation for takeaway food or drink, bathroom stops, medical care, to obtain a coronavirus test or in an emergency.

Victorian farmers and agriculture workers living outside the border bubble and re-entering Victoria after conducting work in NSW will be required to self-isolate for 14 days upon their return and get tested for coronavirus twice.

Agriculture workers who need to cross the border will be able to apply for a permit at service.vic.gov.au or contact Agriculture Victoria on 136 186 for details.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas was last month sworn in as a Victorian Cabinet minister.

The local MP has been handed the portfolios of regional development and agriculture.

Replacing Jill Hennessy as Victoria's new Attorney-General is Jaclyn Symes.

Ms Symes will also continue in her responsibilities as leader of the government in the Legislative Council and Minister for Resources.

Carrum MP Sonya Kilkenny will serve as new cabinet secretary.

Steve Dimopoulos, currently serving as parliamentary secretary to the premier, will also serve as parliamentary secretary for mental health.

Harriet Shing will also add to her responsibilities, bringing her technical experience in governance and in working with regional communities to her new role as parliamentary secretary for water.

Former paramedic and Victorian secretary of Ambulance Employees Australia, Steve McGhie, is the new parliamentary secretary for health.

Development back to council Macedon Ranges Shire Council has refused to extend a permit for 14 doublestorey homes in a flood-prone area of Woodend but a rescission motion could change everything.

The developer sought a two-year extension on the permit for 2-4 Davey Street, which was rejected unchallenged at council’s December 16 meeting.

Since then, Cr Janet Pearce has lodged a rescission motion that will bring the matter back before councillors at the next scheduled meeting on January 27.

Rescission motions are typically lodged when new information has come to light on a matter that could change the outcome of a decision. Further details will be released on January 22.

The Davey Street application first came before the council in 2016 when it was approved but challenged at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Community members argued flooding and adverse impacts to neighbourhood character were concerns for the site, which is located near the historic Islay House.

VCAT ruled in favour of the developer with conditions around flood mitigation works. It was the developer’s third attempt to gain a permit for the site.

Since then, objectors have raised a question of ‘warehousing’, with little development other than tree works on the site over four

years and the property being advertised for sale multiple times.

There have also been changes to flood map modelling and a new draft flood study has been completed for the area that now awaits peer review from the North Central Catchment Management Authority.

“The information that we have received at the moment is that it is not likely to be any significant change in the flood data that is available currently,” Shane Walden, MRSC’s director of assets and operations, informed councillors at the December meeting.

At the time, council officers also indicated they were comfortable the permit still complied with the planning scheme including new zoning that had come into place and would be supportive if it came before the council as a new application.

Cr Rob Guthrie moved the motion to refuse a permit extension at the December meeting, not listing grounds for refusal at the advice of planning staff to enable greater discussion at any future VCAT hearing.

There were no challenges to the motion but councillors Dominic Bonanno and Annette Death abstained from voting.

Crs Janet Pearce, Mark Ridgeway, Anne Moore, Rob Guthrie, Geoff Neil and Bill West voted in favour of the permit refusal.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson had a conflict of interest and was not eligible to vote.

Bakery fire averted

The possibility of a serious fire was averted last Wednesday night in Kyneton’s CBD when police reported thick smoke filling the Bakers Delight shop.

Five CFA trucks from Kyneton, Tylden and Carlsruhe responded to the incident.

The source of the smoke was locat-

ed in an industrial oven that registered 300 degrees on the brigade’s thermal imaging camera. The ovens were isolated and the bakery cleared of smoke using a high-powered exhaust fan.

The building was unoccupied at the time and it was business as usual for the bakery the following morning.

New boat ramps open New boat ramps are now open at Upper Coliban and Barkers Creek reservoirs for easier launching of small boats.

At Upper Coliban Reservoir, the existing on-water access point has been converted to a 40-metre-long boat ramp made of crushed rock, which will enable launching down to 60 per cent water storage capacity.

At Barkers Creek Reservoir, a new boat ramp has also been built, along with additional car parking with defined bays and a new entry point from the road.

To further assist boaters and fishers at Barkers Creek Reservoir, petrol powered outboard engines can now remain on boats, but cannot be used.

Only paddle power or electric motors are

permitted on the water. At Upper Coliban Reservoir, boaters can use electric motors or paddle power only and must remove outboard engines altogether from small boats.

The ramps have been built by Coliban Water, National Plant Group and Djandak (a Dja Dja Wurrung enterprise) and have opened in time for the start of cod season, which began last week.

Among the catchable cod at Barkers Creek and Upper Coliban will be a number of tagged fish worth up to $10,000 as part of the re-launched Golden Tag competition.

Both reservoirs are popular freshwater fisheries and have shared in substantial stockings of trout (107,000), Murray cod (36,000) and golden perch (77,000) over the past two years.

SES in reservoir rescue Eve Lamb

SES used jaws of life equipment to free a woman after her foot became trapped in submerged rock at Cairn Curran Reservoir over the festive period.

CFA, ambulance, Newstead police and Castlemaine police - Senior Constables Eliza mcArron and Steve O'Brien - were also among emergency services who attended after the woman's foot became trapped near the weir at about 2pm on Boxing Day, December 26.

Deputy controller of operations with Castlemaine SES Adam Pratt attended the rescue and

said the woman's foot had become trapped in rock beneath the water.

"It was only a couple of metres in from the edge and we had pretty good visibility," he said.

"Apparently she was just walking on the rocks when she slipped and her foot became wedged in between the rock.

"SES from Maryborough and also the Marong unit also attended because the Marong unit has boating equipment if needed."

The SES crew used the jaws of life to prise apart rock and free the woman's foot.

"It's just another use for that equipment," Mr Pratt said.

Harcourt kinder on track trrack

Harcourt's brand new kindergarten - located right alongside the local primary school - is on track to open for the first day of the first term of 2021.

The new kinder is replacing the community's former preschool, which for many years has operated in Harcourt's Buckley Street.

For the past 70 years, the Harcourt Uniting Church had provided a home, rent-free, to Harcourt Pre-School with the pre-school centre auspiced by the church in about 1950.

But back in February 2020, Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards announced that the YMCA would get a $550,000 grant to build a new early learning facility, co-located at Harcourt Valley Primary School.

The project is valued at $1.8 million overall and Ms Edwards said the announcement was years in the making.

"The kinder had received funding to upgrade its current home, but unfortunately when works began some significant structural issues were identified and it was deemed no longer fit for purpose," she said.

The funds for the new kinder were allocated through the Children's Facilities Capital Program and Inclusive Kindergarten Facilities program in a partnership with the government, YMCA Ballarat and the Harcourt Preschool Parent Advisory Group.

The $1.8 million investment will deliver a two-room 66-place kindergarten, including a high-quality learning environment and outdoor education space for local children as Harcourt experiences population growth.

"It's usually used for road rescue but fortunately it can also be used beneath water."

He said the woman became trapped while in water at about thigh height.

"We waited for the ambulance service to arrive and do their assessment before we moved the rock and then it probably only took about 10 minutes to free the foot," he said.

Senior Constable O'Brien said the woman was understood to be visiting the reservoir from outside the local area and had been trapped for about an hour. He said the woman had escaped without serious injury but had been transported by ambulance for medical observation.

Cruel attack on roo A kangaroo suffered fatal injuries after it was shot with two arrows in a residential-area reserve in Gisborne on New Year's Day. Local police and Wildlife Victoria found the roo with arrows through its body and multiple deep lacerations on its right arm and leg.

The large male kangaroo was still mobile and it had fallen into a small creek then managed to crawl out and lay down nearby.

The kangaroo was tranquillised to assess its injuries but the severity of the wounds from the arrow attack meant the kangaroo had to be euthanised.

Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network drew attention to the incident last week to highlight the "ongoing mistreatment of our wildlife especially towards kangaroos".

"Our wildlife deserve better than this and our rescuers are already dealing with traumatic scenes daily," a statement said.

"The people involved need to be held responsible for the unnecessary cruelty inflicted on an innocent creature."

The appropriate authorities have been notified of the incident and are following up witness accounts.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact police.

Artists in orbitt a around round C CAM AM Lisa Dennis

A new exhibition at Castlemaine Art Museum celebrates central Victorian artists in the orbit that surrounds the gallery.

The first artist to feature in Orbit, which was launched on Boxing Day in the Benefactors Gallery, is Bendigo artist and visual arts lecturer Kylie Banyard.

Banyard's artistic practice is grounded in painting and intersects with photography, video, sculpture and immersive architectural spaces.

The show features selected pieces from her most recent Melbourne exhibition, Holding Ground, and explores the radical pedagogies of American mid-20th century art school Black Mountain College from which many of the male art students went on to great acclaim but most of the female artists remain little known.

The artist's vibrant paintings focus on a small group of black and white archival photographs from the college depicting female artists

and students engaged in farming, making, reading and dancing.

The paintings are coupled with richly coloured textiles, including textile cushions set on besser brick blocks - the same material used to construct Banyard's latest place of work, the La Trobe University Bendigo Visual Arts facility.

"I just love the texture of the bricks and have been looking for an opportunity to incorporate them into an exhibition and this was it," she said.

The selection of works from her most recent offering includes a painting of her own home.

"As this exhibition was created during COVID, I thought it was fitting to incorporate my own space, a place I spent a lot of time in 2020," the artist said.

Banyard's works will be featured until the end of January. Further exhibitions will follow from Ilka White for the duration of February, and Harry Nankin in March.

Harper and Quinn Vance were shocked by the theft of plants from their roadside stall at Harcourt North.

Thieves exploit honesty system

Two local children have been left devastated after someone stole plants from their roadside stall at Harcourt North just before Christmas.

Harper and Quinn Vance set up their little stall to catch traffic on the way to Mount Alexander during the COVID lockdown and were selling produce such as lemons, olives and plants to make bit of pocket money.

But on December 12, eight of their carefully tended succulent plants were taken and no money was left, or, if it was, the money was subsequently stolen.

Mum Stacey Kelly said her girls were shocked and disappointed.

"It's disappointing that someone would exploit the honesty system that has been a tradition in regional areas for countless years. You can clearly see the stall belongs to children. My youngest in particular was really upset," Stacey said.

Chatting to other stallholders in the area, Stacey said theft appeared to be becoming an issue, with people not only taking goods but also stealing the money paid by other well-meaning buyers.

"The girls have put in a lot of time and effort and love checking it daily. It's extremely disappointing."

But the proud mum said they would not be deterred.

"They plan to continue. They won't let this setback stop them," she said.

A 60km/h ‘road hazard’ speed limit along a long, straight section of road of Woodend-Romsey Road appears to have no hazards in sight.

A 60km/h 'road hazard' speed limit along a long, straight section of road in Woodend with no apparent hazards in sight is confusing some local road users.

One driver who witnessed an unmarked police car pull a driver over along the straight on Woodend-Romsey Road, which is located near Braemar College's Woodend campus, contacted the Midland

Express to ask whether an 80km/h zone might be more suitable.

"It obviously aggravates some motorists when they can't see any hazard/men at work on a straight stretch of road," he said.

Regional Roads Victoria acting director Barry Green said a decision was made to reduce the speed limit to 60km/h following a safety inspection last year.

"The surface on this stretch of road has a high risk of being slippery due to water pooling in wet conditions," Mr Green said.

"The speed reduction is in place to reduce the likelihood of a crash due to loss of traction on the road."

The reader asked why RRV didn't simply fix the drainage to prevent water pooling.

Mr Green said RRV was investigating options for future improvements to this stretch of road.

"Our first priority is to keep people safe on our network and speed limits are set to provide an appropriate balance between safety and mobility," he said.

A leading international tourism and recreation consulting firm has been appointed to lead the Daylesford Macedon Rail Trail Feasibility Study.

Hepburn Shire Council CEO Evan King said TRC Tourism had a strong history in developing rail and shared-use trails and recently developed the Daylesford (Tylden) to Woodend, Kyneton and Hanging Rock shared trails and Woodend, Macedon, New Gisborne, Riddells Creek shared trails feasibility reports for Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

"Their extensive experience and track record shows that they understand trails and tourism in Victoria," he said.

"They can draw on their learnings from the Macedon section of the Daylesford to Hanging Rock Rail Trail and related planning frameworks, reports and strategies.

"Together with their project partners, they develop suitable concepts that support a united vision, align with regional plans and priorities, and provide robust justification to help make decisions on project viability and best practice.

"TRC will be supported in their work by the council's economic development unit and major projects team, and work with a number of project partners."

As part of securing the overall project, the council negotiated with VicTrack to secure lease agreements on key parcels of land within the trail corridor.

A serendipitous reunion Raina had planned to do the bus up and use it for accommodation on her farm in Kyneton.

“Life took over and more pressing projects took priority,” she said.

“About six weeks ago, I decided to sell it on. I really didn’t want it to sit around further deteriorating until I maybe one day had the time to do something with it - I loved it too much!”

In worn hand-painted lettering on the side of the bus read a name, address and phone number, so Raina decided to put that information in the ad.

There was a lot of interest in the bus and it sold the next day to a man from Woodend. Not long after, Raina got a message from a woman who turned out to be the daughter of an earlier owner, which read: ‘Hi. This was my family’s bus! I’ve been looking for it for years! My mum and dad - Mervyn Charles and Maree Sherlock - had three buses and Dad got them painted this colour. The Ansair was originally blue and came from Cowes, Philip Island. Please call me - I’d love it if the folks could see it. They’re 85 now!’

Raina said Mervyn came out to see the bus and brought with him Peter, whose family were the original

owners.

“Peter sat in the driver’s seat, which he had not done since he was 16 years old when he last drove it,” she said.

“His family invested £5000 in 1951 to buy the Ansair, which was a sum that would buy you a house in those days. “The bus stayed with them for a few decades doing three different routes until eventually it was sold to Mervyn.

“Peter also brought his cousin Roy out, whose family also owned three Ansair Transetts.

“He had amazing old photos to share and remarkably the original maintenance folder that he gifted to the new owners, who I also invited along.

“Needless to say, they were thrilled with such a rare piece of memorabilia.”

Raina said the reunion had been an amazing day and she felt good about this serendipitous moment.

“The new owners are thrilled and inspired and I can’t wait to see what they do with the Ansair,” she said.

“I didn’t get to restore this bus but I feel my part in her history was the bringing together of the past and the present and a bit of joy in this crazy year.”

An iconic Australian bus was reunited with its original owners after it was advertised for sale on a Facebook marketplace site last month.

Kyneton resident Raina Kilner placed the ad for the vintage Ansair bus when she decided she was never going to get around to restoring it.

She purchased it on a whim three years ago, having gone to Pipers Creek to buy a $5 ladder she had seen on Kyneton Buy Swap Sell.

“I immediately noticed an incredible old bus that the guy had there,” she said.

“I had never seen anything quite like it, with its curvy shape.

“I asked him to tell me about it and, long story short, he waxed lyrical about it and then told me it was for sale as he was selling up and moving to Greece.

“So I bought it!”

Ansair buses were made in the 1950s by Ansett airlines as part of their transport network. The bodywork of these buses used the same construction as for planes at the time. It was riveted aluminium (like the US Airstreams). The Transett was the smaller brother to the Flxible Clipper buses, which are also very rare these days.

School bus stops in the Macedon Ranges will soon be at the centre of a shire-wide audit.

Councillor Geoff Neil initiated the move, which gained unanimous support, at council's ordinary meeting in December.

He also sought a report into installation of a bus bay and shelter in the vicinity of Reynolds Grove and MelbourneLancefield Road service lane in Romsey.

The report to council on the potential Romsey improvements is expected no later than the February ordinary meeting of council.

It is expected to include potential funding options and detail timelines to finalise design, and seek relevant approvals to deliver the project before May.

Strong academic performance and leadership qualities have seen Kyneton High School student Maximillian selected for Skyline Education Foundation's 2021 program.

The program supports high-potential year 11 and 12 students' transition into higher education or a career of their choice, and offers mentorship to help them succeed in life post their VCE exams.

Maximillian is one of four Kyneton High students enabled entry to the program through the Bank of Melbourne Foundation's new multi-year grant award of $500,000, which will increase Skyline's support for vulnerable students impacted by COVID-19.

Maximillian has strong academic grades and has shown impressive skills in playing soccer at a high level. He also works at Woolworths and has his own firewood business on the side.

His teachers and the Skyline Team said they were "impressed by his potential and his hardworking ethic and see a bright future with guidance and support".

Maximillian told the Express he was looking forward to connecting with fellow students in Skyline's program and learning new skills to prepare him for after VCE. Kyneton High School’s Maximillian has been selected for Skyline Education Foundation’s 2021 program.

A cheeky brush-tailed phascogale has been caught yolk-nosed at the centre of a hen house theft in Lauriston.

The scared hens abandoned the hen house, opting instead to roost in a tree.

A cheeky brush-tailed phascogale has been caught yolk-nosed at the centre of a hen house theft in Lauriston.

Property owner Albert Golden said he was amazed to discover the ‘vulnerable’ listed creature, known for its distinctive bushy tail, making a feast of his hen’s eggs one night.

Albert had set out to find the culprit after weeks of discovering broken and empty egg shells in his hen house.

At first he suspected the hens could have played some part but when it continued over several days and his

chooks refused to go back into their house he became suspicious.

“I have been at the property for 30 years and we’ve never had any problem with foxes. The hen house was secure - I wondered how anything could get in,” Albert said.

“One night I decided to go back and look inside - and there it was staring back at me.

“It didn’t kill any of my chooks but it certainly did scare them - they were roosting in a tree.”

Four community groups will share in $2000 Macedon Ranges Shire Council Australia Day grants.

Kyneton Lions Club will receive $500 to put on its traditional free Australia Day community breakfast at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute Reserve. Tylden Hall Committee of Management will receive $500 for its free morning barbecue and celebrations at the Tylden park and playground area.

The GREAT Association will receive $500 for its free barbecue breakfast and entertainment at John Aitken Reserve in Gisborne.

Bayton Hall Committee will receive $500 to put on its free barbecue dinner, annual Baynton Gift and film evening at Baynton Hall.

Albert managed to capture images of the brush-tailed phascogale that was happily enjoying the eggs.

He said he knew he had phascogales on his property, and had even installed special nesting boxes for them, but he never expected to catch one snacking in his hen house.

Albert has since ensured the hen house stays shut and the eggs are promptly removed each day.

His acreage is home to many vulnerable species including the critically endangered golden sun moth.

I know that you have worked hard to earn all that you have acco mplished, and that is all anyone can ask of you. With 51% of your cohort achieving results in the top 20% of the State, we could not be prouder.

You leave Girton Grammar School not as former students, but as future leaders, and I hope you will be leaders in ever y aspect of your life.

During your time here, you have been taug ht many things, including an unapologetic curriculum of self-awareness and personal discovery in emotional intelligence. As a result, as you leave , you are likely to be more conscious of who you are, what you stand for and where you are goin g.

You will go on to universities and workpla ces, find yourself in situations and places where others are less aware, more selfish than caring, and you will be amongst people who do not see a future as bright as yours. I know that you will trea t others with compassion and kindness and that humility will guide all that you do.

In 2020, your final year of school was one of missed opportunities and experiences, but I know the losses will not define you. This year the wor ld learnt a lesson in dealing with disappoin tment, and it has been widely said that it has taught us all resilience and instilled in us a sense of gratitude.

So it’s not unfathomable that, in years to come, you’ll look back at your final year of school, one year characterised by difficulty at the end of a thirteen-year journey, and recognise som ething positive in the experience.

Your parents, your teachers, your school, your family, your friends and your effor ts have brought you this far. Now it is time to set out on your own, to follow your own aspirations.

You are leaving school in the age of COV ID, so you know how this works. One pers on infects another, creating a chain of reproduction and infection that leads to a pandemic. It is the same with your influence. If each one of you takes wha t you have learnt at Girton - about positivity , about fortitude, about being steadfast – and you give that gift to someone else, you’ll make the world a better place.

OPINIONS Council stepping up Hans Paas, Castlemaine Despite more than a month passing since learning how badly I did in the council elections, I confess to still feeling a bit raw.

This has been tempered somewhat by learning that an application for a permit for a solar farm at Ravenswood was approved unanimously on the motion of two of my Castlemaine Ward opponents.

Next I read 'Expand your outdoor dining' (Midland Express, December 22) indicating that our council is really stepping up to give post-COVID support to local business. If the residents of Butterworth Street end up keeping their unsealed road and residents near Froome Street keep their one-way bridge, I may even feel that there was no need to stand for election at all.

I can say that it does feel good to have avoided all the hard work required of a conscientious councillor. I congratulate all of them and wish them well for what will be a challenging New Year.

Hypocritical action Lauren Williams, Maldon Hypocrisy and racism are ugly concepts, but the Mount Alexander Shire Council may have just demonstrated both. Recently, in response to a local complaint, council ordered a Maldon resident to remove a 'Black Lives Matter' sign from their front fence, citing 'heritage concerns'.

What makes this hypocritical is that for well over a year in the recent past, many shops and residences in Maldon displayed handmade signs protesting against the proposed chicken broilers in Baringhup.

Despite some complaints then, council stayed out of it, the signs remained, and the protest had a successful outcome. So chickens are more important than black lives?

More hypocrisy: Council's initial draft of the current Maldon Streetscape Revitalisation plan featured modern kerb outstands, a modern pedestrian crossing and modern rubbish bins.

No concern for heritage there, but now it seems a handmade sign on private property isn't heritage enough.

Is council saying it isn't 'heritage' to protest in Maldon? Central Victoria is a historic epicentre of protest against unjust government practices … the Eureka Stockade and Chewton Monster Meeting spring to mind.

I imagine plenty of homes and businesses, in those times, would have had hand-made signs on display, stating their viewpoint.

The 'Black Lives Matter' sign was painted on an old piece of corrugated iron - can't get much more 'heritage' than that.Most importantly, the sign was locally pertinent, given the tragic death in custody of Yorta Yorta grandmother Tanya Day at the Castlemaine Police Station three years ago. None of the police on duty at the time have been charged with any offence.So, complainant and council, pull your heads in.

I live in Maldon and I'm going to make a Black Lives Matter sign and stick it on my fence. I urge other concerned residents everywhere to do the same.

Competition and jobs David Williamson, Castlemaine In relation to the proposed new supermarket, myself and many residents sincerely hope that all plans are approved and passed by Mount Alexander Shire in either the February of March council meeting.Recently the plan size of the proposed supermarket has been reduced from 3800 square metres, to 3500 square meters, making the new supermarket marginally smaller that the 'Big IGA' in Mostyn Street.

The Mostyn Street 'Big IGA' is 3581 square metres.

Concerns have been raised by some residents that there will be an extra bottle

shop for Castlemaine, moving in the new complex in Forest Street.

My understanding is that the bottle shop destined to take up residence in the Forest Street complex is not an additional bottle shop.

The bottle shop under the banner of BWS, which has been operational for a number of years in Castlemaine, is owned

by Woolworths and will move from the 'Big IGA' complex into the new Forest Street supermarket complex.

The bottom line is it would make no difference where a supermarket site was chosen by a developer in Mount Alexander Shire, there will always be an objector.

A new supermarket will provide muchneeded employment for the youth in this shire, plus provide much-needed competitive prices, especially when it comes to groceries.

Locked out yet again?

Mary Hogarth, Kyneton In response to Linda Steenhuis's comments ('The community will be heard', Opinions, December 22), I'm dismayed by the prospect of the community having to take a back seat or no seat at all in relation to the use and control of the former Kyneton primary school site.

I walked along Simpson Street on New Year's Day and felt deflated at the sight of the buildings and grounds. The long grass is a fire hazard with weeds over the height of the fence, and damaged and unkempt buildings are a sign of lack of care and of the protracted processes to determine the future of this remarkable site.

The community, through the Kyneton Town Square Co-op, held some events at the site once it became vacant and were active in maintaining the buildings and site until they were effectively locked out (instructed to discontinue working bees).

From 2017, community groups fought to stop the cream brick building from being demolished to save the site from being sold off, to be kept in public hands for broad community use and control. The recent state government revelation of the preferred (undisclosed) applicant to manage the site suggests the community has been left out in the cold. $12 million to improve the site is welcomed. Inclusion of an arts and gallery spaces will increase tourism. However, as per the DELWP stated objective of the EOI, will there be '…varied uses for premises that will provide Kyneton and the wider community with valued, varied, safe and accessible services or facilities to benefit the community'? How will a broad local vision be ensured for the preservation of the site for generations to come? Will shortterm ambitions block, for example, future integration of the adjoining public Mechanics precinct?

Two government-funded consultations have highlighted strong local ambition for the community use and management of the site. Does this announcement instead break the back of the community by locking it out of a fair and transparent decision making process, and potentially out of the use of the site for the benefit of the whole community?

and vehicles smashed, to say nothing of the human injuries and deaths. Clear and landscape all the verges fence to fence to give drivers a chance to see the animals.

It is a daunting task, but given a 20-year plan it could be done, and cost effectively.

Given the AMMI report that they processed 374 wildlife collisions during 2019 ('Duty of care failure', Opinions, November 10, 2020) it is reasonable to suggest 8000 animals were killed and as many vehicles smashed over the past 20 years. Correcting the verge management could prevent nearly all that estimated $200M repair costs and deaths!

Imagine, 100km roads with no shadows on them, no trees, logs or rocks to claim vehicles and occupants immediately they leave the roadway, a verge surface that is user friendly to slashing machines, and hence drivers able to see animals early enough to slow down. This clearing would give us the best fire breaks to make our firefighters so much more effective in a safer environment rather than the current bushfire wicks!

Carers Australia defines carers as "people who provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness, an alcohol or other drug issue or who are frail aged".

These people are an integral part of Australia's health structure and are the foundation of the country's aged, disability, palliative and community care systems.

Caring may include help and support in any of the daily activities of the person being cared for. It may include physical and personal care and assistance such as dressing, lifting, showering, feeding or providing transport.

Commonly, carers are responsible for the management of medications. Carers provide emotional, social or financial support. Caring may also involve helping the person they are caring for to be organised, reminding them to attend appointments and dealing with emergencies.

Community pharmacies and carers often have a close relationship.

Because they look after the health needs of the person or people they care for, carers are high users of community pharmacy services in their own right.

This is especially the case for primary carers who are those who provide the most substantial amount of care to one or more people with disability, chronic illness, mental illness or who are classified as frail aged.

As a first point of contact, pharmacies can play an important role in assisting carers, through our strong connections with local medical and allied health providers.

Because so much of their focus is on the person they are caring for, carers can at times relegate their own health to a lower priority. This is something that community pharmacists are well aware of and on the lookout for.

Kyneton Football Netball Club is saddened by the passing of life member and clubman through and through, Cliff Butler.

Fondly known as 'Butler', he gave so much of his time to both the KFNC and the wider community.

Butler took on the role of trainer alongside 'Mozza' in the 90s and 2000s and was part of Kyneton's successful 1995 premiership side.

He also marked the ground for many years with Jimmy Hocter.

Amusingly, they disagreed on almost everything from the width of the lines to the thickness of the lime, but despite their differences, they always turned up and got the job done.

Butler helped out in every area of the club from the bingo to the bus lunches, to the presentation nights for which the Kyneton Tigers committee, members and community were, and always will be, most grateful.

The club sends its deepest sympathies to Butler's family and loved ones during this sad time. He will be sorely missed.

Cliff Butler gave so much of his time to both the KFNC and the wider community.

U3A Kyneton has an exciting year of courses and activities planned.

Whether you wish to learn a language, interact with highly informed tutors, put pen or paint to paper, cycle, develop sporting skills or just enjoy social interaction, U3A Kyneton has a diverse offering.

A small sample of what is on offer includes: historic tour of Kyneton, art workshops, book circle, bridge, Coffee Club, current affairs, cycling groups, Computer Club, European history, exercise, Film Club, first Australians, travellers French, intermediate and advanced French, Lunch Club, mah jong, tai chi and walking groups.

U3A Kyneton is a meeting place for like-minded retirees and is a great place to form new friendships.

U3A Kyneton will use the Red Brick Hall for enrolment day on January 14, 9am to 12pm. There will be contact tracing in place and a QR code provided for check in. Online enrolments for members will be open from January 12.

The U3A Kyneton website www.u3akyneton.org.au will show a full list of courses available before this date. There is also a Facebook page for members.

The annual joining fee is $30 and new members are welcome. Some courses incur an additional cost and this information will be available on the website.

Some courses are being held outside, some in private homes and some in the Red Brick Hall - all COVID procedures will be followed for the safety of the members.Due to the volatile nature of the pandemic some information may be subject to change.

Water connection made simpler Residents connecting new properties to Coliban Water's drinking and recycled systems can now benefit from an updated and improved process.

Coliban Quick Connect will bring the new water connections process in-house, giving customers a single point of application.

Steve Healy, Coliban Water's executive general manager of climate and population adaptation, said Coliban Quick Connect was for builders and people connecting services to their land, or changing services on their land.

"The new system means one online form and one bill," he said.

"Builders and customers will now deal with a single contractor whose only job is to deliver and install new connections, including digital water meters, for the region.

"All they need to do is complete the online form, pay the connection fee and we will install the new water meter within 10 business days.

"The same goes for recycled water customers. Some new estates around the

region have access to recycled water, and this process will also apply to them."

Mr Healy said Coliban Quick Connect was expected to lower new connection costs to customers overall, depending on where they lived.

"The process will make it easier to meet demand for new connections in high-growth areas across the entire Coliban Water region," he said.

"It allows Coliban Water to take responsibility for managing the quality of the connection assets and who installs them, the same way power, gas and telecommunications companies do.

"Digital data loggers will be installed on all new meters."

Coliban Water's appointed contractor will complete the water main tapping, installation of property service, and installation of the meter assembly using local contractors and employees.

Kyneton golf A field of 35 contested Kyneton Golf Club's Palmer, Stevens and Rennick monthly medal on Saturday.

C-grade winner Paul Law took out the medal with 87-20-67, with grade runner-up Richard Partride 89-19-70.

A: Jason McClure 80-9-71, from Nick Williamson 81-9-72. B: David Moore 80-12-68, from Glen Cook 83-11-72. Terry Gamble was NTP on two holes, and super pin as well. The final stableford comp. for 2020 attracted 36 players, including 12 women.

Medal ranks highly

Kyneton-based Flynn Silver's workmanship and exquisite designs has led to international renown over decades.

The Flynn brothers, Dan and John, were delighted to be able to create the inaugural Johnny Mullagh Medal for the best player in the Boxing Day Test played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Indian captain and century maker Ajinka Rahane was a worthy winner as the tourists swept to an eight-wicket victory to level the four Test series with Australia.

Dan Flynn thinks the story the Mullagh Medal tells is the best behind anything they have ever made; and John said the new medal certainly is right up there with the special trophies that rank so highly with the two brothers.

They have been working with Cricket Australia for nearly 20 years, and the outer border of the distinctive medal is a copy of the belt buckles worn by the Indigenous Australian cricketers on their hectic four months tour of England in 1868. In the middle is a picture of the touring side.

Outstanding all-rounder Johnny Mullagh (real name Unaarrimin) took 245 wickets

Johnny Mullagh spent the majority of his cricketing time with the Harrow Cricket Club, in the western district of Victoria.

past eras, but to improve sporting relationships with the Indigenous population.

Flynn Silver's clientele include federal and state governments, esteemed corporate and sporting bodies internationally, and private individuals.

Their creations are in many places, including Buckingham Palace, the White House, and the Vatican.

Alastair Beard was a runaway winner of Lancefield's monthly medal on Saturday.

He fired a fine 101-36-65 to land the medal, the C-grade award, and a handicap reduction. The A-grade winner was Barry Brennan 83-11-72, and B-grde went to Mark Andrews 84-15-69. A field of 81 contested Trentham's monthly medal on Saturday, with the winner being Leif Louwen-Skovdan 71-5-66 on a countback from David Nugent 88-22-66.

Shield match Kyneton Bowling Club is the venue for the annual Millar-Deason Shield match this Sunday, January 9. Many of the top players in the Central Highlands and Central divisions will be taking part. Each division will field 28 players, 16 men and 12 women, in the fours event over 21 ends. The Kilmore and Broadford clubs, presently in Central, are expected to join Central Highlands next season. Play on Sunday is expected to begin around 12.20pm.

Cricket resumes Gisborne District Cricket Association's season resumes this Saturday.

The key McIntyre Cup round six match is between Romsey and Gisborne, with both sides hoping to consolidate their positions in the four after last round defeats.

A pristine MCG! Malmsbury Cricket Club's legendary groundskeeper of 40 years, Laurie 'Frizza' Marshall, will find his job keeping the pitch perfect a little easier thanks to the generous donation of a $20,000 ride-on wicket roller from Mentay Constructions.

Mentay heard about the club having the motor from Laurie's old push roller stolen and decided to step in to help.

Laurie was there to test-drive the new rig late when the club's generous benefactors delivered it late last month and spent some time over Christmas practising his skills.

At 84 years of age, he could certainly do with a little less exertion on the job!

Won on raw ability Bill West

Having his second start, local galloper Snappy Magus won by three lengths at Kyneton’s New Year’s Day meeting.

Jockey Dylan Dunn told connections: “He won on raw ability”.

Owner-trainer Danielle Chapman has been around racehorses for too long to get carried away with a win in a Maiden over 1100m, but the signs are encouraging as Snappy Magnus improved considerably on his recent debut at Bendigo when fifth over 1000m, beaten by four and a half lengths at odds of $101.

Snappy Magnus, well bred by Magnus from Commanding (Commands mare) will remain in work, with improvement anticipated.

The gelding is a Chapman family horse, raced by Danielle and husband Steve, sons Tyson and Cody, and grandparents Pamela and Robert Shaw.

They have plenty of room and a private training track on their 120 acres of farmland at North Woodend.

“We’ll just look for another suitable race on a nice track for him,” Danielle said after the race.

From the outside barrier in the McMahons Dairy Maiden Plate, Smart Magnus jumped well and raced close to leader and favourite Hugo Loves Vegas, trained on the track by Mick Sell.

Smart Magnus moved up on the turn into the straight and soon raced clear, winning in good time by three lengths from Chilli Bean, with Mr Have A Chat third.

The gelding was purchased through an on-line auction.

“He (Steve) finds them, I train them .... it’s getting harder and harder to find a handy horse now days,” Danielle said.

She has a background steeped in racing (Australian Racing Hall of Fame member Brian Courtney, dominant in Victorian racing for decades) was a great uncle) and her best horse by far was city winner Snappy Tom, winner of $332,000 in stake money and a remarkably consistent galloper in good company in the early 2000s.

Snappy Tom was raced by the same connections (apart from then youngsters Tyson and Cody).

Danielle, a hobby trainer and former municipal animal welfare officer, has also had success over the years with well bred gallopers who are notorious as “roarers”.

A day to remember for jockey duo Bill West It was a joyous occasion for 19-year-old apprentice Kiran Quilty and her father Cameron when they finally rode in the same race together for the first time at Kyneton on New Year’s Day. But behind the thrill of Kiran winning the 1850m TAC Be Races Ready BM52 Handicap with a fast-finishing dash alongside the inside on Voodoo Queen is a story of remarkable perseverance and will to overcome injury setbacks.

“Dad’s taught me everything I know, and it’s a passion (being a jockey) I grew up with,” Kiran said.

From Broadford, Kiran rode in Shetland pony races and took part in show jumping and pony club at a very young age; at 14, she was riding trackwork for Kilmore trainer Jody Thompson.

A dislocated shoulder sidelined her for seven months, until finally under Racing Victoria’s Apprentice Jockeys Program, Kiran began her dream of race riding early last year, being apprenticed to Shane Nichols at Mornington. Her

third winner came for Kyneton trainer George Osborne, aboard his stable star Reine Happy at Bendigo.

Then a fall at Pakenham resulted in hospitalisation, and it took seven months before Kiran returning to riding in Boxing Day. Keen to learn and work hard, Kiran hopes she can eventually be good enough to ride in a Melbourne Cup - inspired by the success of Michelle Payne being the first female rider to win the big race in 2015 on Prince of Penzance.

RIDDEN EVERYWHERE At the age of 47, Cameron Quilty epitomises the ‘Have Saddle - Will Travel’ work ethic philosophy of many of the battling jockeys who are so important in the industry.

Chalking up nearly 200 winners since 1998, he has ridden at nearly every track in Victoria, and in southern New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory.

“I think Coleraine is the only track in Victoria I haven’t been to,” he said.

“I’m lucky I don’t have weight problems, and keep fit .... I hope to still be riding at 50,” he declared.

Quilty rides trackwork and in jump outs on a regular basis, and is used to being on longshots at various venues.

His career hung in the balance when a horse reared over backwards and pinned him against a fence at Mildura in September 2018. He had ridden the oddly named Lifeinthefasttrain and Seduce Me Now that day before the bad break in his left arm occurred.

Complications resulted in a wrist reconstruction, and he was out of the saddle for nearly two years.

Quilty admits the chance to be able to ride again, in the same races as his daughter, was a motivation to make a comeback rather than retire.

He rode Doctor Timor in the Kyneton race won by Kiran on Voodoo Queen, which struck interference and was last for much of the journey.

“I didn’t expect her to be that far back,” trainer Robert Kingston said, expressing delight that Kiran did not panic and secured a rails run to snatch victory on the $3.80 chance.
