Cellar doors across the Macedon Ranges are holding a series of events this month as part of the new Summertime Fling Festival.

Three weeks of events promoting everything wine, food and fun are underway and will continue until January 31.

The Macedon Ranges Vignerons Association is running the event to encourage lovers of wine and food to take a well-earned break and share fun in the fresh air and scenic wide-open spaces.

Poolside is looking like the place to be for the rest of summer particularly if you're young and local.

Backed with a tidy sum from Vic Health, Club Summer @ Chewton Pool is a new pilot program packed with the sort of things summer memories are made of.Aimed at the 12-18 age set, the program is free and it's making its debut splash at the popular local pool this Sunday, January 17.

"There's been a lot programmed especially for older people and younger children but not so much for teens," says Castlemaine's Sas Cook, co-ordinating Club Summer and well known to many for her work in the youth sector.

For Club Summer Sas notes she's in excellent company with Walk The Walls parkour exponents Flynn Patrao and Cameron McLaren also leading the packed program running on specific Sundays 12-3pm all the way through to March.

"We'll have parkour and hiphop workshops, pool games, DJs, tie-dying," Sas lists of what's in store.

She also mentions the program involves food, and will culminate with live music including some fav local musos.

"Each week we will also provide free lunch with vegan and gluten-free options," Sas says.

"Our final event will be an end-of-summer party with local bands.

"And everyone who registers will also receive a free summer membership to the Chewton pool.

"It's an opportunity for kids to have their own space and be active. We just want young people to feel they can come along and learn some new skills and have some fun."

Instigated by the local pool's engaged volunteer committee, the new pilot is all part of ensuring local teens get to enjoy some quality connectedness, especially following a year gatecrashed

by COVID.

Conservation has won in a dispute over plans to clear 86 native trees and develop a high-risk bushfire property in Macedon.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has ruled "the extent of vegetation removal required will compromise the conservation value of the land to an unacceptable degree".

The rejected proposal was to renovate an existing unoccupied building and construct an outbuilding on 2.9ha at 27 Watts Road.

Extensive tree clearance was required to create a "defendable space" around the proposed home, under a Bushfire Management Overlay, but competed with strong policy to protect the natural landscape.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council refused the permit in November 2019.

The property sits within a Rural Conservation Zone to "ensure the existing forest mosaic is protected and any development does not compromise native vegetation, but provides for its enhancement".

The Watts Road land is part of forested area that extends from the Macedon township west to the Wombat State Forest. It is a significant inclusion in the Victorian Government's declaration of Macedon Ranges as a 'distinctive area and landscape'.

Vegetation on the property forms part of a wider and consistent area of shrubby dry forest and valley grassy forest, which the council submitted "plays a critical role in supporting fauna in a highly fragmented landscape".

The council's submission to VCAT stressed the importance of maintaining consistency of habitat to support biodiversity.

VCAT ruled in favour of the council, stating "the extent of native vegetation removal...is too great to warrant approval".

VCAT's order was issued in December 2020.

"And it was undertaken off the back of an organisational restructure, which was also challenging and created further uncertainty.

"The staff survey results reveal a strong customer service culture and commitment to improving productivity.

They also convey that staff agree that their direct supervisor sets a good example for them and values their opinion.

"However, the survey results also convey that staff are dissatisfied with professional development opportunities and that organisational investment in its people is not meeting employees' needs and expectations."

Mr Nevin said it was clear there was a goodwill among employees to make the organisation a better place to work and to provide a higher level of service to the community.

"The organisation is now looking forward to progressing on this basis," he said.

"Central to this will be open and honest communications and a focus on maintaining organisational stability, rebuilding work teams post the organisation's now completed restructure and engaging with our employees to ensure they all continue to have an opportunity to participate and contribute."

The wounds of last year's organisational restructure of Macedon Ranges Shire Council continued to be felt by employees months later, a staff survey conducted late last year has revealed.

In responses viewed by the Midland Express, employees expressed feelings of being let down, a clear level of distrust, and lingering dissatisfaction with communication from senior management.

"Senior management need to work hard to earn trust back from the organisation, as the saying goes, 'the fish rots from the head'," one employee wrote.

"Stop making operational decisions at executive level - you don't know what happens at that level. Consult and engage with knowledgeable operational staff'," wrote another.

"The timing of the restructure (during a pandemic) was unfortunate and I feel may have had a damaging effect on the organisation in terms of the level of trust among staff," another wrote.

"The last six months within the organisation there has been a growing sense of distrust in the senior leadership team.

The restructure process was not done well. If you are going to do a restructure there should be meaningful conversations with workers," another said.

Acting CEO John Nevin acknowledged there was a need for improvement in investing in people and how they were valued by the organisation.

"While not an excuse, it needs to be remembered that this 2020 staff survey was undertaken when all of us were subject to the COVID-19 work from home and movement restriction requirements," he said.

New technology helps detect skin cancers New FotoFinder technology at Campaspe Family Practice is helping to map and detect skin cancers.

FotoFinder is a computerised molemapping system that GPs can use to create an accurate, detailed set of photos of their patient's moles.

The high-resolution camera connects to a computer and transfers the photos to the doctor's database, allowing them to compare photos from past visits to identify new moles or changes in existing moles.

According to Campaspe Family Practice, melanoma of the skin is the third most common cancer in men and women, and the most common cancer affecting Australians aged 15 to 39. Melanomas are black or brown and often resemble moles.

Early detection and treatment of melanomas is critical to stop the cancer spreading to other parts of the body. Melanomas can occur anywhere on your skin but are most common on the head, neck and trunk in men and the arms and legs in women.

FotoFinder is an expert system for early melanoma detection. It automatically analyses moles according to pattern recognition algorithms, quantifies any changes in your mole and gives an indication of whether the lesion

may be a melanoma.

Campaspe Family Practice says those with increased risk of developing a melanoma have a fair complexion and have had high exposure to UV radiation from the sun or indoor UV tanning beds.

Twenty-five per cent of melanomas arise from ordinary moles that begin to change shape, size or colour.

Campaspe Family Practice says other factors associated with a higher risk of developing melanoma include: having

had blistering sunburn; having some large moles, many small moles, or moles that have a different appearance to normal moles; family or personal history; and having a weakened immune system.

Some melanomas can be more difficult to diagnose because they do not look like typical melanomas. The most common symptoms of melanomas are: a new skin spot or a spot that is changing in shape, size or colour; a sore that doesn't heal; a mole that's itchy, scaly, bleeding, oozing, swollen or painful; and a spot where pigment has spread to the surrounding skin.

While many conditions can cause these symptoms, it's important to speak to your doctor if you notice any of these changes in your skin.

The T Th Taungurung L Land d and dW Waters C Councilil iis creating i 17 new jobs as part of a formal agreement with the state government recognising the Taungurung people as Traditional Owners of a large area of central Victoria.

The agreement is the outcome of more than three years of negotiations, and covers an area stretching from Rochester and Kyneton in the west to Bright in the east, and Euroa in the north to Kinglake in the south.

The jobs include a range of natural resource management roles such as park rangers and field services officers with some positions starting this month.

The new rangers will work in partnership with Parks Victoria as joint managers of the nine parks and reserves the Taungurung People have Aboriginal Title over, under the Traditional Owner agreement.

The additional resources will ensure that the parks and reserves are well looked after so all Victorians can visit and explore this lovely part of the state for years to come.

"We're empowering Aboriginal communities in the pursuit of self-determination and land justice - this agreement is another positive step forward for the Taungurung people," Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Gabrielle Williams said.

Signed in 2018, the agreement recognises the Taungurung people's Traditional Owner rights to access Crown land to hunt, fish, camp, and gather natural resources.

The agreement was negotiated under the Traditional Owner Settlement Act 2010, which allows for out-of-court settlements to recognise the rights of Victorian Traditional Owners.

"In celebrating the commencement of our Agreement, we acknowledge the Taungurung Elders and community who have paved the way to our self-determination - a long hard fight to challenge policy and law that tried to deprive us of our Country," Taungurung Land and Water Council CEO Matthew Burns said.

The agreement has delivered around $26 million to support the Taungurung people's economic and cultural development, participation in natural resource management, and other self-determination initiatives. It also provides the Taungurung people with an avenue for their culture and connection to country to be supported and promoted.

New rangers will work in partnership with Parks Victoria as joint managers of the nine parks and reserves the Taungurung People have Aboriginal Title over.

Consultation has opened for the state government's Planning for Melbourne's Green Wedges and Agricultural Land study.

The study seeks to strengthen planning for green wedges and agricultural land within a 100km radius of Melbourne, including Macedon Ranges and southern parts of Mount Alexander Shire. Protecting the significant features and assets in these

areas is deemed important for environmental, food-production, economic and health outcomes. A consultation paper outlines proposals to improve the state planning system and guide decision making on Melbourne's peri-urban agricultural land and green wedges. Submissions close February 5. Wind-crafting summer fun

Crafty kids can enjoy creating their own wind-interactive toys in a special Macedon Ranges school holiday workshop.

Working alongside artists Jo Mott and Sandra Long, children use a mix of recycled and found materials to make their own wind toys to take home.

Artists will lead participants through the process of making and decorating a range of toys such as twirlers, spinners, pinwheels, swallows, eagles, fantails and more.

Workshop dates are: January 14, 15 and 16. Three sessions are available each day: 9.30am,11am and 1.30pm.

Workshops are delivered in a supportive and COVID-safe environment.

Lucky escape for driver

Car flips in crash

A driver fled the scene of a crash in Kyneton on Saturday afternoon.

A driver fled the scene of a spectacular crash on Edgecombe Street in Kyneton on Saturday afternoon.

The 37-year-old Kyneton woman was driving a Holden Astra north near Orr Street about 1.50pm when she collided with a parked Mitsubishi Lancer and spun, flipping her car onto its roof.

The 37-year-old sustained cuts and bruises and a significant knock to the head but was able to free herself from the vehicle. She fled the scene on foot.

The impact pushed the Lancer into a Holden

Cruze parked in front of it. Both parked cars were damaged and the Astra was written off and towed from the scene.

A police helicopter returning from Bendigo was called upon to search for the woman but she was brought back to the scene by a friend who encouraged her to face her wrongdoing. She was remorseful and apologetic to the owners of the damaged vehicles.

An ambulance conveyed the woman to Bendigo Base Hospital for further assessment. She will be charged with careless driving and enquiries

are pending in relation to licence matters.

The road was closed to traffic for about an hour.

Leading Senior Constable Brett Magrath of the Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol said police were appreciative of the woman returning to the scene.

"As a result of her distraction and inattention she has destroyed her car and damaged two others," LSC Magrath said.

"It was fortunate there were no pedestrians or cyclists in danger.

"Because she came back she will not face more serious charges," he said.

A woman was lucky to escape serious injury in a single-vehicle accident on Ford Road at Harcourt North on Sunday afternoon.

Castlemaine Police Sergeant Steve Bax said the vehicle collided with a tree around 3pm and fortunately the woman was able to free herself from the car before it burst into flames.

The CFA was quickly on scene and extinguished the fire and approximately 100 square metres of burning grassland.

The driver was conveyed to Bendigo Base Hospital by ambulance for treatment for minor injuries.

Precinct planned

The Mount Alexander Health and Wellbeing Partnership has welcomed the release of Victoria's Draft 30 Year Infrastructure Strategy and its recommendation to develop multipurpose shared social service facilities in the regions.

The partnership is an initiative of Castlemaine Health, CHIRP Community Health and Mount Alexander Shire Council, who are working together towards a new way of "doing health" with and for community.

A Health and Wellbeing Precinct is a key component of their vision for improved health outcomes where people of all ages are active, connected to their community and services, and enjoy staying physically and mentally well.The precinct concept integrates infrastructure, services, and systems to enable and support a place-based, personcentred, social model of health and wellbeing.

Over time, the precinct will offer a broad range of treatment and preventative services, alongside health promoting activities, and support the shift to a prevention-focused social model of health for Mount Alexander.

The final components, configuration and design of the precinct will be determined through engagement with specific user groups, the broader community, service providers, health professionals and government agencies.

CHIRP board chair and partnership co-chair Lexi Randall-L'Estrange said the partnership had a vision of integrated infrastructure that would support the long-term health and wellbeing of the Mount Alexander community.

"We are encouraged that this approach is recognised by government and identified for immediate action in the Draft Strategy," she said.

"The Mount Alexander Health and Wellbeing Precinct is specifically referenced in the Draft Strategy as an example of a multipurpose facility. We are looking forward to working with government to deliver this significant project for the community," Ms Randall-L'Estrange said.

Police air wing stops over

Members of the Victoria Police Air Wing made a brief stopover in Chewton last Saturday afternoon much to the delight of local youngsters.

The members were on route from Bendigo to their home base in Melbourne and made a stop for some lunch.

The Victoria Police Air Wing received a welcome boost from the state government in November with the expansion of their fleet meaning they now have even more capability to respond and assist at incidents all over the state.

A 100km/h speed limit on the southbound Calder Freeway exit to Woodend/Lancefield has had local road users baffled.

"The S-bend exit ends at a roundabout and no one could safely approach it at that speed," one reader told the Midland Express.

Acting Regional Roads Victoria director (Loddon Mallee) Barry Green said RRV assessed speed limits on a case-bycase basis.

"The 100km/h speed limit along this exit has been deemed appropriate by our road safety experts -- however we always

urge motorists to drive to the conditions and slow down when approaching a roundabout," he said.

"There are signs in place along the exit ramp to notify drivers of the upcoming roundabout and to encourage drivers to slow down, to safely give way."

Mr Green said RRV had not received any concerns or complaints about the speed limit approaching the roundabout. "We encourage the community to report hazards or any concerns about the condition of the road network by calling our hotline on 133 778," he said.

As parents, there are things you can do to minimise the impact on your children and reduce the stress for everyone involved. Here are some tips on how to go about it.

Plan A Parenting Plan is one way of formalising parenting arrangements without going to court. They can help families form a routine because the parents and children know how their time will be divided. This allows everyone to prepare themselves which can also reduce conflict. Unlike Parenting Orders made by the court they are not legally binding - they are voluntary agree-

ments, drafted with the help of a mediator or lawyer. As such, they are more flexible and can be altered if the parents agree.

Communicate Communicate clearly and respectfully.

If there is conflict between you and your ex it is worth using text or email to avoid children witnessing heated arguments. There are also a bunch of co-parenting apps such as SharedCare, 2Houses, FamCal and Our Family Wizard that allow parents to coordinate schedules, vary arrangements etc.

Keep children in the loop It is worth taking some time to talk to your children about the holidays and what they will look like, especially if your separation is fairly recent. Talk about the changes and what will stay the same. Ask if there are any events they really don't want to miss out on, or things they are worried

about and really listen to their responses.

Be reasonable Whatever is happening between you and your ex, it can really affect children's mental health if parents are openly criticising each other. A child may feel compelled to 'take a side', which is highly stressful and inappropriate. A counsellor can help with how to manage these stressors. If things get tricky remember to stay child-focused.

That means putting their interests ahead of your own which can be extraordinarily difficult if you have been hurt by your ex.

Ask yourself, is this adding to their stress?

What is in the best interests of the child may not seem 'fair' to both parents. Even if things are manageable with your ex, holidays can bring up a lot of emotion and for that reason it is also prudent to let your support network know what is happening.

Move on EV charge stations

CycleSafe Mount Alexander and Bike Bendigo are gearing up to support students to ride to school in 2021.

Nicola Dunnicliff-Wells School has not yet begun for 2021, but CycleSafe Mount Alexander and Bike Bendigo are gearing up to support students to ride from day one.

Early last year, Bike Bendigo introduced the On Your Bike! school holiday program, supporting teens and tweens to ride safely to school. The program will run in Castlemaine again this summer, funded by Healthy Heart of Victoria and Mount Alexander Shire.

Teens and tweens love the independence a bike brings. That was the impetus for 11-year-old Sophie to attend the On Your Bike! program for teens and tweens in September last year.

"Being able to travel independently is going to be essential in our family," says Sophie's mother, Meg. "Sophie's enjoying more independence as she gets older and I thought it would be beneficial to improve her road safety and riding skills with support."

The On Your Bike! school holiday program begins with a focus on bike control skills. It also covers road law for cyclists and strategies for riding safely in traffic (including how to negotiate intersections and roundabouts safely), as well as plenty of supported on-road practise.

Meg reports that Sophie feels much more secure on her bike since attending

the program.

"She rides more often and more confidently," Meg says.

"And it gave me added security that she knew how to do it safely. We'd recommend it!"

One of the reasons for developing the On Your Bike program for teens and tweens was that, in Victoria, children are not legally allowed to ride on footpaths once they turn 13. But most young teens don't have much experience negotiating traffic.

The aim is to support students to develop the skills and knowhow to ride safely on roads when they have to, and also to learn how to choose low-risk environments.

Sophie mostly avoids riding on roads, but she does need to for short bursts, as Meg explains: "We plan around how she can get places on bike paths, but sometimes it's not possible to ride exclusively on bike paths.

"Sophie rides to so many places now - after school activities, her aunt's or friends' places. Anywhere she can ride to, she'll ride to."

Gearing up teens

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is working to identify suitable sites for future electric vehicle charging stations across the shire.

This investigation will identify any infrastructure upgrades that may be required, and determine what type of charging stations may be suitable.

Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said the council was pleased to be part of this research supported by the Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance, of which the council is a member.

"It is important that any requests for external funding or budget bids regarding the installation of electric vehicle charge stations are based on up-to-date information to provide the best outcome for our community and visitor economy," Cr Anderson said.

Several councils in the CVGA region have secured Regional Development Victoria funding to purchase and install electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Additional councils have signed up to a bulk-buy program utilising their own funds and will purchase and install charging stations by late 2021.

The CVGA's bulk buy program builds on the background research conducted as a part of the Charging the Regions project completed in April 2020.

Hepburn Shire CEO resigns Hepburn Shire Council chief executive officer Evan King has resigned to take up the role of CEO at the City of Ballarat.

Hepburn mayor Cr Lesley Hewitt said Mr King’s departure would be a loss for the shire but extremely positive for the region.

“Evan has been an active and productive CEO of our shire and he will be missed by, not only councillors and the organisation, but many in the community,” Cr Hewitt said.

“While we are sad to be losing him to the City of Ballarat, it is a great appointment for the region and also for our shire, as we work with the City of Ballarat in many ways. Having Evan there can only help us further strengthen our strong partnership.”

Cr Hewitt said the council would consider its options as to who would lead the organisation during the recruitment process.

“Harley Douglas, a Djaara man and project officer at Dja Dja Wurrung Enterprises, writes on the local plants used or food, medicine and fibre, and shares the Djaara language names for plants,” she said.

“The booklet also includes information on healthy soil, plant selection, water conservation practices and a visual plant guide.”

Ms McLean said while there were permanent water saving rules in place, our outdoor water use still accounted for the majority of our water consumption and this booklet helped with water saving ideas.

Gisborne Toy Library demonstrates how a community can gain much through a little bit of time and effort.

Join the library Gisborne Toy Library is not alone in that it has had a tough year.

A small, committed group of local parents kept things ticking along in the background while the state of Victoria locked down to keep our community as safe as possible.

Committee member Alison Simmenauer said Macedon Ranges Shire Council approved a COVID-safe plan late last year that allowed the toy library to offer collection and drop off services to its small group of 2020 members.

"We are currently working towards reopening in some fashion in 2021, which may entail by appointment or click and collect services," Alison said.

"In order to keep the toy library open to serve our community with a great, ecofriendly option, we need your help!

"Please consider joining the toy library and browsing our collection for various toys and activities to keep your little ones learning and developing.

"And, if you have an hour or two a month that you could use to give back, please consider joining the committee.

"You'll be keeping a 30+ year tradition up and running, helping reduce wasteful plastics and single use toys from going to landfill and demonstrating to your kids how a community can gain much through a little bit of time and effort."

Works to resume

Regional Roads Victoria Station Road and Saunders Road intersection upgrade works in Gisborne are expected to resume on January 13.

The new drainage works that began in December will continue through January, along with the first stage of road widening works on Station Road near Octagonal Court and Webb Crescent.

RRV will work to ensure pedestrians and cyclists can continue to move safely through the area by constructing temporary footpaths and crossings.

Temporary barriers to separate traffic from the worksite will be installed on the Station Road lane heading towards the railway station for the protection of our workers and road users.

Drivers are asked to look out for any signs indicating changes in traffic conditions and follow instructions carefully, including reducing speed.

RRV recommends allowing extra travel time.

Motoring What about a road trip?

Want to give that L plater in the family a little more experience before they take to the roads to drive to uni in the coming months?

There's nothing like a good road trip to get the kilometres under the (fan) belt, and the best place to head on one of these days away is somewhere with water!

Goulburn-Murray Water, which oversees Cairn Curran and Eppalock reservoirs among others, is reminding visitors to its lakes and water storages that summer will look a little bit different this year.

GMW general manager of water storage services, Martina Cusack, said by following some basic guidelines, everybody could enjoy a COVID-safe summer.

"We are asking visitors to all storages to pay attention to a few basic guidelines and to keep up-to-date with the most recent COVID advice," Ms Cusack said.

"Most importantly, people must give each other space, carry a mask and prac-

tice good hygiene.

"We hope these basic rules allow all visitors to continue enjoying our storages throughout summer."

Ensure physical distancing - stay at

least 1.5 metres away from anyone you don't live with.

Wear a face mask. If you are in Victoria and aged 12 years and older, you must carry a fitted face mask while outdoors, unless there is a lawful reason not to use one. Wearing a face mask is mandatory indoors (as at 5pm December 31 2020). It is strongly recommended you wear a mask outdoors when you can't keep 1.5 metres distance from other people.

Practise good hygiene.

"When visiting our storages, bring your own 60 per cent alcohol-based hand sanitiser or soap, and clean water for hand washing," Ms Cusack said.

To help visitors remember the rules, GMW has placed signage around key areas to detail the rules and show whether

a boat ramp is open or closed.

Boat operators are asked not to set up their day operations adjacent to boat ramps, enabling an improved launch and retrieve process.

Take in/take out - rubbish facilities at water storages can vary. To support increased hygiene practices, ensure that you remove and take with you any rubbish when leaving.

And remember that there is no foreshore camping - while not a change, visitors are reminded that GMW storages are no foreshore camping areas.

As the weather warms up and COVID restrictions allow travel across the state, RSPCA Victoria is reminding pet owners to ensure their animals are included in their holiday plans this summer.

RSPCA Victoria received 1401 reports of abandoned animals last financial year, with 468 of these reports during last summer alone. The reminder comes as part of a new statewide campaign targeting three of the most commonly reported cruelty concerns during the hotter months; abandonment, dogs in hot cars, and insufficient access to water and shade.

Karen Collier, inspectorate team leader at RSPCA Victoria, says it is a pertinent time to remind pet owners of both their legal and moral obligations to care for their animals particularly after a turbulent year where our pets have been faithfully by our side throughout lockdown.

“We know Victorians are eager for a break, so whether it’s a week down the coast or a long weekend away, if you’re making plans for yourself and your family, you need to ensure your pets are included in those plans,” Ms Collier says.

Steiner art exhibited

Works by a number of Castlemaine Steiner School students were selected to feature in Australia’s largest student art collection online.

Called isArtworks, the online gallery will eventually put on display more than 3000 works of art submitted to the Annual Student Art Exhibition conducted by Independent Schools Victoria over the past 15 years.

The physical exhibition of the first works selected was on display at The District, in Melbourne’s Docklands.

However, the new online platform also allows the community to view the exhibition now that social distancing remains due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The massive task of sorting, cataloguing and adding descriptive text and other educational resources to more than 3000 artworks from previous years that are being added to isArtworks is expected to be complete in the second half of 2021.

“It will allow researchers to build a picture of the changing face of artworks and arts education, and to show the evolving complexity of students’ ideas and styles,” says Anne Smith, ISV arts learning executive.

Two advanced accredited Suzuki violin teachers are sharing their music methods with the region.

Frances Gall and Chantal Jones each have more than 30 years of teaching experience in Melbourne and are now happily living in central Victoria, with studios in Castlemaine

(Frances) and Woodend (Chantal).

The Suzuki method is a worldfamous and effective method of music education invented by Dr Shinichi Suzuki in Japan in the 1950s. Children learn to play a musical instrument and develop a joy in music by listening to recordings, taking both individual and group lessons, and practising at home. A musical education can start in very early years, even before a child has learnt to read and write, from as early as three years of age.

However, whatever age you start the Suzuki method it is still effective and rewarding.

First, basic posture and beautiful tone are established, then music reading is taught. This order of learning helps develop a child’s ear for music.

Both Chantal and Frances gave online lessons for part of 2020 and developed their experience in online teaching so that students were able to continue lessons without interruption.

A positive and nurturing environment is created in the lessons, with parents attending lessons and following up at home. In addition to individual lessons, group classes are an important part of Suzuki method. Children play together as an ensemble, and also have solo performance opportunities that develop confidence within a supportive friendship group. The group class is a fun-filled environment where parents are able to observe the artistic development of their child.

Big changes for a little school Last year saw little Langley Primary School move ahead with some pretty big changes. New technology equipment and use, new students, new yard projects, new projects with the community, new school council members, new more inclusive curriculum content, new policies and procedures.

Wellbeing is Highview College’s business Maryborough’s Highview College is a safe environment with one rule - ‘Be Kind’ which allows every student an opportunity to thrive.

Wellbeing is taken seriously for staff and students. Why so big?

Low-income people plus young families under the financial pump obviously need a cheaper place to shop in Castlemaine, but does it need to be so big?

I do question the site due to safety, on a corner and so close to the school.

I also wonder about noise generated by trucks arriving at all hours with reversing 'beeps', cars coming and going and doors closing, plus the airconditioning and refrigeration units' motors going non stop.

If you stand at the back of the big IGA near the outlet vents there's a constant noise. In the dead of night I imagine noise will carry across the creek to where myself and many others live. To all the people wanting another supermarket I ask, would you choose to live next to or very close to one?

Castlemaine has very little rental accommodation and if this current plan goes ahead we'll lose two perfectly good houses.

If the plan were a bit smaller at least we wouldn't lose these houses.

I also wonder if it'll be cheap enough? I haven't found Woollies to be that cheap?

Everyone wants an Aldi, which it won't be, so maybe people will continue to drive out of town to shop?

Signage lacking John Mitchell, Kyneton I cannot agree with K. Coulter ('Say no to land grab', Opinions, December 22) who is concerned by industrial and commercial development in Kyneton... on land deemed 'industrial' by the Macedon Ranges Shire Council!

Her complaint is rather like building next to an airport and then complaining about aircraft noise.

The proposed Edgecombe Road development of Bunnings, the service station/fast food complex and the proposed commercial lots are on the other side of the Calder adjacent to existing industrial and commercial developments including Hardwicks, Dysons and the biscuit factory. They are a highway from Kyneton proper.

K. Coulter should be more concerned about our town's appalling tourist signage and lack of facilities for day trippers, caravaners and campers. Tourist signage is a fast and inexpensive way of improving our facilities and at least making Kyneton appear as a tourist town. So I pity any tourist trying to easily find the mineral springs or Piper Street, because they aren't sign posted. But that's just for starters.

And the sewage dumping point at the 24-hour stopover should be fixed rapidly.

Hell....there is a plaque at the Tourist Information Centre proudly proclaiming we are a caravan-friendly town. Yet the facility that it promises is inoperative.

And where is appropriate vehicle parking signage in Mollison and Piper Streets for people with disabilities?

Quality gazumps price Hans Paas, Castlemaine Your story 'Water connection made simpler' (Express, January 1) demonstrates a welcome trend.

Coliban Water proudly proclaims that "Coliban Quick Connect will bring the new water connections process in-house".

After nearly three decades of governments and corporate instrumentalities 'outsourcing services to the market' the pendulum is swinging back.

It is reassuring that this is happening with a service that has such a large health impact on the community.

Like the government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic that was so fatally flawed by outsourcing, Coliban Water realises that quality gazumps price every time.

Hopefully we will see more essential services like energy and infrastructure taken out of the hands of a rogue marketplace and back into a regulated government sector that is ultimately responsible to us voters for delivering a safe and prosperous 2021.

Commitment to what?

Jayne Guilmartin, Gisborne Western Water's flyer, 'We're on track with sustainability', stating "We're committed to making sure the work we do is sustainable and good for the environment" made me wonder how committed they are considering the current application for a planning permit to erect a tower on the top of Mount Gisborne, which will cause irreparable damage to this significant Scoria Cone Woodland, an endangered Environmental Vegetation Class in the Victorian Volcanic Plains bioregion.

The reserve is covered by a significant landscape overlay and is recommended to be rezoned to Public Conservation and Resource Zone, a directive from the DELWP's Planning for Biodiversity policy, December 2017, to protect it. Despite this, Western Water fails to acknowledge this in its application that is advertised as a Telstra tower, which it is not.

The summit track is mostly narrower than the width of the heavy machinery (20 tonnes) proposed to deliver construction materials to the top, and traverses many exposed mature tree roots. It has tight turns, making it impossible to stick to the track or not cause irreparable damage to the rare Volcanic Scoria outcrops.

Mount Gisborne reserve is home to the listed endangered species Dianella amoena, and many other indigenous protected flora species that are covered by the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. An alternative, suitable site has been discounted from consideration. Reasons given are that it is sub optimal, would require additional costs and removal of mature trees. These are Pinus radiata, listed by council as an environmental weed.

It seems that Western Water prioritises environmental weeds over an EPBC-listed and other protected indigenous species.

Commitment to what? Making sure that the work they do is sustainable and good for the environment? Or is this a case of nice glossy flyers and good old-fashioned rhetoric to convince the community to believe what is said, rather than what is done.

Calling out negative social media commentary Julia, Kyneton There is always a need for local helpful information. Many people, myself included, will refer to social media pages to get answers.

In Kyneton there are pages named in accordance with two of the three main trading streets. Large numbers are referring to those pages, and whether you like it or not, social media presence has become a key consideration for all businesses.

It therefore behoves the administrators of the pages to moderate commentary, not always easy, and the content being posting to wide audiences.

I think the Mollison Street social media group is an embarrassment to the street and the town. Occasionally, I have found good information, and great historical posts, but too often the subject matter and commentary descends to an appalling level.

Why write to the newspaper about annoying social media comments?

Because the impact of the negative posts has far-reaching effects. We need to keep calling it out.

If someone should choose to launch a High Street Kyneton social media page, I hope that they use it solely to promote, celebrate and support those businesses. It has far-reaching effects.

Alternatively, traders across town could administer a centralised social media presence to help visitors navigate the patchy summer trading, and to be a single online place for promoting the three unique and magnificent streets.

Please reconsider Dr Yvette Berkeley, Castlemaine Veterinary Clinic Mount Alexander Animal Welfare and the wider shire area have been deemed a worthy recipient of a $90,000 government grant to establish a community vet at the MAAW animal shelter.

This grant is a huge achievement. No other regional area in Victoria boasts a community vet.

Community vets have always been the preserve of urban areas. This is now an opportunity to allow all eligible central Victorians access to affordable vet care.

These government grants are competitive, prestigious and represent system support for animals and their owners.

A community vet would mean that animal owners with little or no means to visit private vets would be able to access heavily subsidised vet care. Owners who previously couldn't afford to take their animals to the vet, or would endure financial hardship and debt to pay for veterinary care would be able to visit the community vet and receive high-quality veterinary care.

A community vet would be able to provide much-needed wildlife support and be ready as a frontline clinic in the event of bushfire or other natural disasters.

MAAW is in a unique position to utilise this grant as it already has the necessary infrastructure.

On behalf of animals and people who genuinely need veterinary support please don't let this opportunity go. The grant has been given to MAAW on behalf of the community because of regional demand.

The state government has extended the deadline to accept the grant. It is now up to the MAAW committee to reverse its recent decision to reject the grant. With the ultimate goal of promoting animal and human wellbeing.

There are very few communities like Castlemaine with the drive and community spirit to firstly operate an animal welfare shelter, and secondly to succeed in winning a grant to create their own community vet.

MAAW committee members please reconsider your decision. MAAW members please show your support.

Gisborne Rotary Club and the Gisborne Golf Club hosted a joint community Christmas lunch on December 21 at the Golf Club for more than 100 nominees of local community organisations and church groups.

Guests were welcomed by Gisborne Rotary president Richard Stewart and treated to a delicious Christmas lunch with all the trimmings.

'Son of a Gun' featuring Mark Testro and his son Matt provided live entertainment for the event.

A special moment was the opportunity to celebrate a golden wedding anniversary with Terry and Trish Watson who were guests on the day.

Rotary club members said it was a special day to be able to engage with fellow members of the local community and to share some Christmas cheer, especially after a year overshadowed with concerns over bushfires and COVID-19.

Organisers thanked those community organisations that helped make the day a success including The Catering Wizards; The Wine Company; Williamson's Foodworks Gisborne, The Macedon Nursery, Priceline and Patch'n Quilt.

They also thanked the many helpers from Kidsflip, Gisborne Golf Club and the Gisborne Rotary Club who helped the event run so smoothly.

Terry and Trish Watson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Thieves take charity tin Police are investigating the alleged theft of a Cancer Council Victoria fundraising tin believed to have contained about $300 from a Castlemaine store last Monday.

A woman entered the store at 4.30pm carrying bags that she left at the counter while she browsed the store as a second woman entered the store.

The store owner was distracted speaking to the second woman who refused to use hand sanitiser and announced to her friend already in the store that she would meet her "up the street" and left.

At this stage the first woman had moved back to the counter to retrieve her bags, said "thanks" and left the store.

It wasn't until the next morning the store owner noticed the fundraising tin was missing from the front counter.

The store owner said he believed the two women were working together and looking for "easy pickings", and warned all businesses in the area to be on alert for strangers acting suspiciously.

One woman was described as about 5'10', overweight, unkempt, with shoulderlength red hair and dressed in dark clothing.

The second woman was slightly shorter, with shoulder-length dark hair. She was of a lighter build and wearing jeans and a jacket.

Understanding the community interest in MAAW, the Committee have announced the reasons for their decision not to accept a capital grant to alter the Shelter premises at 24 Langslow St, Castlemaine to establish a community veterinary clinic.

The Committee noted that the Working Group Report modified some of the earlier application’s forecasts, but up to $25,000 would still be required to cover clinic establishment costs not funded by the grant. Furthermore, the Working Group stipulated that a central factor in ensuring the project was successfully implemented involved the appointment of an executive manager, an idea that the Committee had already investigated but found financially unfeasible in the current climate. Successful implementation would also require the employment of specialist staff on contract, the establishment of an Advisory panel to provide expertise in clinical veterinary practices and additional training of Shelter staff and retraining of volunteers.

Local vets and professional bodies all acknowledge a serious shortage of qualified staff in regional areas. ABC News reported on 26 December 2020 that thirty percent of vets are predicted to leave the service in the next few years worsening the situation.

Staffing the proposed clinic would therefore be unpredictable.

The organisation has recently invested in the employment of additional staff at the Shelter and with the financial liabilities of a mortgage on the property at Langslow St, imminent remedial costs to the old RSPCA building, planned improvements to the new cattery along with the threat of an unpredictable 2021 the Op Shop’s income could be impacted hence we are reluctant to undertake another venture in this climate. While the Shelter receives some funding from the Shire, its everyday operations and capital costs are heavily dependent on the income contributed by the Op Shop.

Disruption to the core business provided by the Shelter, both during the construction period and on days when the clinic operated would be significant. In an unpredictable work environment and in anticipation that post COVID many animals will be surrendered, the Committee are concerned not to overextend staff, either paid or the volunteers who assist them.

Cost/ benefit and risk analysis of investment indicate alternative arrangements like a subsidy scheme can more effectively achieve the desired aim of providing financial support to disadvantaged pet owners unable to fund the health care needs of companion animals.

As an incorporated body MAAW’s rapid growth has already stretched its human resources, hence it is time to consolidate, offer a positive culture and engage/ manage our obligations to the community with a positive experience and outcome.

Lancefield golf Inspired by good weather and course conditions, Di Brennan struck a purple patch of form at Lancefield last week.

Brennan took out the women's monthly medal on Wednesday with 97-28-69, from Sandra Stevens 104-32-72, and followed up with a superb 43 stableford points on Saturday.

The men played a stableford round on Saturday, with C-grader Graham Mau having the day's best round with 44 points.

Garry Dudderidge took out A-grade with 36, and president Glen Holland 39 was best in Bgrade.

Trentham golf Trentham Golf Club has paid tribute to Kevin Hartley, course architect and one of Australia's finest amateur golfers, who died just prior to Christmas.

He was the impetus for Trentham's wideranging course improvements starting in 1996; over more than two decades the 'Hartley Plan' guided upgrades to the course, with designs for all 18 greens as well as the new 2nd, 3rd and 16th holes.

Known for his remarkable accuracy, Hartley won the 1958 Australian Amateur Championship and represented his country in four Eisenhower Cups from 1964-1970.

He won the prestigious Ivo Whitton Trophy for scoring averages an unprecedented 12 times, captained Victoria 13 times, and was leading amateur at the Australian Open three times. He never turned professional.

Trentham was voted Victorian Golf Club of the Year in 2019, and Hartley's impact will long be remembered at this popular district club.

On Saturday, 86 players turned out for a stableford event in ideal conditions.

Grade winners: A - Craig Cotton (handicap 12) 39points; B - Grant Cramer (20) 37; C Dylan Sutherland (34) 37.

Women: A-Sue Byrne 35; B - Di Lewis 37; C Rosie Hill 40.

The first midweek monthly medal went to Ray Poole with 77-11-66 on Thursday.

Romsey golf With golfers continuing the 2021 syllabus and bowls back a week early the shared rooms at Romsey were under pressure on Saturday, with committee members from both clubs working out a compromise time arrangement for usage.

The stroke round promised good scoring and several players returned at or below handicap efforts.

Steve Wilkins 86-18-68 won from Mick Squire 72-3-69 and Keith Hocking 102-30-72.

Liz Manktelow was the women's winner with 99-26-73, and Hocking and Anthony Lakey were nearest the pins. Ambrose for three-member groups in chilly conditions on Wednesday produced runaway winners.

wrap ‘Rock’ races now at Kyneton Bill West

It's official! The annual Australia Day race meeting usually held at Hanging Rock has been switched to Kyneton.

This means there will be two race meetings in five days at the Kyneton course - the 2021 Hanging Rock Cup meeting on Tuesday, January 26 (Australia Day), and the annual Woodend Cup meeting on Saturday, January 30.

Racing Victoria and Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club last Friday jointly announced the Australia Day meeting had been transferred from Hanging Rock to Kyneton.

The New Year's Day meeting was held at Kyneton instead of at 'The Rock', and there was strong speculation then that the Australia Day meeting would follow suit.

Racing Victoria's racing operations manager Josh Grimwood said the K&HRRC had advised that it would be difficult to implement the required COVIDSafe measures at Hanging Rock, and as such the club desired to transfer the meeting to Kyneton.

The feature event, the $25,000 Hanging Rock Cup, will now be staged over 1850m, rather than 1800m.

Minor distance changes have been made to other events on the program.

In line with current COVID restrictions, the Australia Day meeting is a ticketed event, with no walk-ups on the day, along the same lines as last Friday at Kyneton.

Two in a row for Toolbar Bill West

Consistent Kyneton-trained galloper Toolbar has won two feature country races over the holiday period.

The big grey won over 1100m at Kerang on December 28, and followed up with a narrow win in the Halls Gap Lakeside Tourist Park Cup at Stawell last week.

Toolbar now has five wins from 27 starts for the George Osborne stable, with stake money of $154,135.

Starting at $9, Toolbar was ridden by Dean Holland at Stawell, with the first four horses across the line separated by less than half a length.

Raced by Osborne and key stable client Alex Babauskis, Toolbar had already been entered for the Inglis early January online sale before winning at Kerang and Stawell.

Another very consistent galloper, Celeritate Regem, won easily for Osborne at Mornington on Sunday.

Top comp at carnival

Castlemaine Cycling Club held its Christmas carnival on December 27.

The event was part of a four-day track cycling series, which included Shepparton, Castlemaine and two days in Bendigo.

The club hosted 140 cyclist from all around Victoria with ages ranging from under 11s, all the way up to Masters 50+, with plenty of quality in every group.

The Victorian Madison title was taken out

by Bendigo girls Lilyth Jones and Milana Freer, with local girls Leshae Maddern and Taylor Collier taking out fourth.

The club was pleased to have some national gold medallists along for the day in Alessia McCaig and Lucy Stuart who continued their dominating form.

There were plenty of local riders who supported and raced well over the four days and the Castlemaine club would like to thank the sponsors of the event, Smartline Mortgage Brokers, PJ Tyers, Bress Wine, Waller Reality, Bananaman Flooring and the Amy family.

Club racing will return today (Tuesday January 12) at 5pm and anyone keen to race is welcome to go along and try out.

Come and try croquet!

On a bitterly cold and windy Monday evening in the middle of summer, more than a dozen people were playing on the lawns of the Kyneton Croquet Club in the first of the club's Family Twilight come and try croquet sessions last week.

Potential champion croquet players ranging from teenagers through to those of a slightly more mature age lined up ready to have a go. There were looks of dismay on quite a few of the participants' faces when they saw how narrow the hoops were and how large the balls seemed to be that they had to try and hit through the hoops.

After a few tips from the club members giving instructions on the game, everyone soon started to get the hang of the game and a few of the new players positively surprised themselves as they discovered skills they never knew they had.

Club president David Wauchope said the club was happy with the response they received to their initiative and was particularly pleased to see some younger players having a go at the game.

There are still two more Monday evening sessions on January 18 and 25 from 6-7pm and people of all ages and abilities are welcome to come and have a go.

Way to go in run chase Bill West A masterful unbeaten 81 from 91 balls by captain-coach Ben Way enabled Romsey to topple Gisborne in an exciting McIntyre Cup match on Saturday.

Way and fast bowler Louis Moor added 46 runs for the ninth wicket in the last five overs to get the Redbacks over the line after the visitors compiled a healthy 7/179 c.c. from 40 overs. Prolific scoring opener Mick Allen was unavailable for Gisborne.

Spilt catches were costly as the Dragons recovered from 3/51, Patrick McKenna top scoring with 49 (four fours, two sixes). Sam Mackay, 27, Clinton Young 24 n.o., and skipper Jason Wilson 22 made useful contributions.

Romsey used six bowlers, with Aaron Paterson taking 3-25 from seven overs having the best figures, and young all-rounder Will Collins snaring two key wickets.

Way has chalked up eight centuries after joining Romsey from Melbourne C.C. and is a magnificent batsman when in full flight. He was captain of the Victorian Country Cricket League side in 2017-2018.

He has spent much time instilling self-belief into the Romsey lineup, seeking an entire team contribution.

Sean Day 21 and Corey Day 20 made early runs, but Gisborne looked to be on top when the sixth wicket fell with 94 runs on the board.

Way never panicked, monopolised the strike and continually encouraged his latter order partners, while Gisborne bowlers did their best to minimise scoring.

Picking the right ball to hit, Way launched three sixes, and Moor showed some belligerence at No. 10 to score 16 not out as the winning runs came in the final over.

Gisborne, unbeaten last season, slips to fourth on the ladder after consecutive defeats, with Romsey now third, behind Bacchus Marsh and unbeaten ladder-leader Sunbury United.

What a big match between United and Gisborne at Gardiner Reserve this Saturday. Should be worth watching.

Bacchus Marsh made 7/201 c.c. (James Lidgett 89, Tom Wardell 50 not out) at Maddingly Park against Woodend, with the Woodsmen soon losing both openers for ‘ducks’, and slumping to 8/65 before a quick-fire 39 (seven fours) from Hamish McDonald carried the total to 115.

The remaining McIntyre Cup match was a thriller, with East Sunbury sneaking home with a ball to spare.

Diggers Rest - Bulla was bowled out for 136, and East Sunbury replied with 9/138. Neither look strong enough to trouble the top four.

So close in bowls Central Highlands pennant bowls swung into action on Saturday after the festive season recess, and remarkably, six of the seven matches across divisions one and two were decided by between two and seven shots.

Talk about being competitive, with the tightest finish of the day being at Romsey, where top division ladder leader Kyneton Golf was relieved to scramble home by just two shots (60-58).

Cam Austin had 14 shots to spare for the home side, now in fifth spot and locked in a battle for fourth spot with Gisborne.

Golf’s Toby Barker is the only undefeated division one skipper, with six wins and a draw after seven rounds, and his side ‘stood up’ once again to provide Golf with a 13-shot buffer.

At Gisborne, the home side gave third-placed Lancefield a good contest, with skipper Peter Williams in good form in an 18-18 tie against Aaron Young.

The Tigers established a buffer with Peter Linehan 11 shots up, while Alan Higgins gained two points for the home side.

Reigning premiers Kyneton made sure of maximum points at Diggers Rest, with Mark Smoljo’s 23-shot victory the biggest of the round.

Craig Vincent, ace greenkeeper and top bowler, made a welcome appearance for Kyneton and he adds depth to the lineup.

Macedon kept final four hopes alive in division two by downing Romsey by five shots, ladder leader Kyneton Golf had the same margin over fourth-placed Woodend, and Trentham also won by five shots against Kyneton. Gisborne downed Lancefield by four.

Malmsbury Cricket Club’s division one side returned to action following the Christmas break, but unfortunately appeared to be still in holiday mode, and failed to impress.

Batting first against Rupertwood, the Berries never recovered after losing an early wicket.

David Nolte offered resistance to top score with 45, and Matt Cox 24 and Chris Ganim 20 failed to build on promising starts. A total of 155 all out was never going to be enough, with the Honner brothers taking five wickets between them.

Rupertswood’s opening batsmen put on 127 before a wicket fell. Bowlers toiled had, the batsmen had some luck, and fielding was ordinary.

The visitors cruised to 3/156, with Bert Van Den Heuval 64 and Rick Turner 46 in form. Wickets were shared by Nat Fisher, Dan Turner and Ryder Blizzard.

This Saturday: Malmsbury v Gisborne at MCC; north grade away at Kyneton.

Bowlers Greg Brain and Rod Phillips dispensed a crowd-pleasing championship final.

Castlemaine Bowling Club Men’s Championship final was played in style on Wednesday December 23.

The last year’s champion, Greg Brain, played Rod Phillips.

It was an excellent championship game between Greg and Rod with the lead changing several times.

Greg led in the early stages 9/4 then halfway through the game the score stood at 14 all with the many spectators enjoying the skill of both players.

From then on Rod gradually went ahead and won with the final score 25/18.

It was a worthy final game by two champions.

Rod now goes on to play in Bendigo in the Champion of Champions on Sunday January 17.

Rod has now won seven Castlemaine Championships and two Champion of Champions.
