Tetris Energy is proposing to establish 15,176 low-reflective photovoltaic solar panels at a 12-hectare site about six kilometres northeast of Castlemaine at 3040 Harmony Way, Faraday.

Last week several residents in the area met with Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards, overlooking the proposed site, to raise concerns they hold about the development.

"The location is highly visible on the crest of a hill and there are 15 properties within one kilometre of it," John MacIntyre told the Express.

Mr MacIntyre said he was concerned about a lack of public consultation around the proposal and was now among several local landholders who had lodged formal objections with the state planning department.

"We would like to see the whole thing go back to enable more consultation," he said.

"Properties immediately adjacent are also concerned about noise and there are also some concerns about fire risk," he said.

"I think everyone agrees solar is the way to go and I have solar panels on my own roof but I think this proposal would be better located on flat land to the north of Bendigo where there is more space between properties, and not on a ridge that's highly visible.

"But I understand that one of the de-

velopers' main concern is proximity to the grid."

Another local resident Jim Steel expressed similar concerns.

"We believe this is not an appropriate site for a large, ugly industrial solar farm with associated infrastructure," Mr Steel said.

"There are hundreds of more suitable sites available on flat, isolated land elsewhere in Victoria."

Tetris Energy's proposal for the renewable energy development can be view at the state planning department's website.

It summarises the project as involving use and development of the land for a renewable energy facility (solar), utility installation and associated earthworks.

The project is also expected to involve alteration of access to a road zone, re-

moval of native vegetation and installation of business signage.

A number of landholders and residents from the area have jointly written to the state planning minister requesting "an urgent review of the proposal" while also calling for it to be rejected.

They argue that the site is not suitable and does not meet the government's Solar Energy Facilities Design and Development Guidelines, requiring mutual benefit for the community.

"None of the residents have any issue with solar power – the issue is the proposed location and the lack of consultation with local residents and the traditional owners of the land. The project seems to have crept up on us by stealth," the residents jointly stated in their letter to the minister.

A refugee family was pleased to cook for friends in Woodend and thanked them for their ongoing support.

Reliant on good will

A refugee family that has been supported for three years by the Macedon Ranges Rural Australians for Refugees paid a visit to Woodend on Saturday to say thank you.

The family of five, from an oppressed minority of the southwest of Iran near the Iraqi border, cooked a meal for the group in gratitude for its ongoing support.

Although recognised as refugees, with their children permitted to attend school, the adults are not allowed to work or study and are reliant on the good will of ordinary Australians in order to make ends meet.

It’s a regulation that exasperates many, including MRRAR chairman Bill Hebb.

"All they want, is what we all want – the opportunity to determine their own lives and make a contribution," Mr Hebb said.

"They could be working, contributing to the economy and paying taxes. Instead, they’re forced into a situation of dependence

that humiliates them.

"We have to put ourselves in the shoes of these people and imagine how we would react if we were confronted by tyranny and the threat of death." But it’s not all doom and gloom, Mr Hebb said.

"Our support network is growing and we’re energised by an infusion of new blood," he said.

"We’re particularly happy to see younger people coming on board and we’re finding that they are bringing new vision and energy."

MRRAR will end the year with one last event. From 9.30am this coming Saturday, shoppers at the Coles supermarket in Woodend will be invited to add a non-perishable item to their purchases to donate for the support of refugees in Australia. Lists of suitable products will be offered to assist shoppers in their choice.

No safe crossing

Mr Walden said the council was also discussing a crossing in Urquhart Street with the school and TAC. The work within Urquhart Street is dependent on the TAC grant application.

School principal Bronwyn Phillips said the proposed changes “would be a start" but there were multiple concerns to be addressed.

“The proposed changes address one problem area. There are at least two other problem areas, and we need signage,” she said.

“We have reported several close incidents involving children crossing on foot or on bikes in front of oncoming traffic as well as cars swerving or braking suddenly to

avoid hitting children crossing.

“We are concerned about our children as well as the Woodend Primary children's safety when going to and from school via Templeton Street particularly when crossing over Brooke, Urquhart and Anslow streets."

Mr Boudrie said the council had been in the process of addressing crossing points at the school for several years with no result. He said the new proposal provided no real solution.

"The new design represents MRSC bureaucracy and lack of foresight resulting in a tick box exercise rather than providing a practical solution for community safety," he said.

New design plans for Brooke Street are still being finalised. The council aims to tender the works before Christmas to engage a contractor to start in the New Year.

St Ambrose Parish Primary's community doesn't want to see a disastrous traffic accident resulting from a lack of safe pedestrian access in the school precinct.

The Woodend school is one of the only ones in the district without school crossings and the school community wants action.

More than 150 parents lodged concerns with the council outlining the need to address three dangerous pedestrian points in the school precinct earlier this year.

School parent Mike Boudrie said an increase in traffic around the school made pick-up and drop-off times a nightmare.

"The street has become a thoroughfare for those trying to avoid the main street and get around," he said.

"There is currently no crossing and no warning signs. The council seems to be dragging its feet.

"I feel like it's a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured."

The school had a small win in Macedon Ranges Council's 2021/22 budget with works approved for a wombat crossing at Brooke Street.

However, council’s director of assets and operations Shane Walden said plans had since changed.

“During the Brooke Street design phase, the consultant advised against a wombat crossing at this intersection due to the proximity of the crest in the street,” he said.

“This solution would not meet current Australian standards as there is not enough sight distance for vehicles to react in time to slow and see the wombat crossing.

“For this reason, the traffic consultant recommended a slow point right before the crest to provide enough reaction time for cars to slow down at the crossing point.”

Cars collide at Kyneton

We’re asking for further input on some short-term and long-term recommendations to improve safety at the site.

Emergency services were called to the scene of a multi-vehicle collision in Kyneton about 3.25pm last Monday after two cars collided at the intersection of Victoria Street and Yaldwyn Street East.

The impact caused the vehicles to come into contact with an empty school bus waiting to turn the corner.

A male and a female, both aged in their 70s, were taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in stable conditions, suffering upper body injuries.

A third patient, a female teenager, was taken to Bendigo Hospital in a serious but stable condition with upper and lower body injuries.

A Castlemaine man accused of assisting in his father's suicide in May this year was back before the Bendigo Supreme Court last Friday.

Originally charged with murder, Glenn Stratton, 54, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of aiding and abetting suicide.

The court heard Mr Stratton's father had been undergoing years of cancer treatment and the 80-year-old's condition was deteriorating.

KYNETON The visual vigil by Jim Coad is being featured nightly during the 16 days campaign.

Come nightfall each evening during the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, the Castlemaine Town Hall is being lit up with a visual vigil created by Castlemaine artist Jim Coad.

The lights are on between 9pm and 10pm each night until the campaign winds up this Friday December 10 (International Human Rights Day).

Mount Alexander Shire Council is leading the ’16 Days’ campaign locally with support from a working group that includes members from the community and Loddon Mallee Women’s Health, and with funding from Domestic Violence Victoria and the Domestic Violence Resource Centre.

There were 201 incidents of family violence reported to police in Mount Alexander Shire in the past year.

The nightly vigil is a gentle and beautiful reminder to viewers to

consider how gender-inequality drives violence against women and girls.

There is also a Portrait Prize 4 Respect exhibition taking place at the Phee Broadway Foyer that aims to challenge gender stereotypes and gender inequality. View the exhibition and take the opportunity to add your own portrait if you wish.

Eve Lamb The ghosts of Chewton's past are about to be brought back to life when local historian Ken McKimmie leads a public history walk this weekend.

All are invited to join the knowledgeable local history researcher and writer as he leads the walk through the history-rich little town this Sunday 12 December 12, sharing colourful insights into its 19th and 20th century past.

“The history of Chewton started with a big rush and there were 30,000 people in the area,” says Ken ahead of the walk

organised by Chewton Domain Society.

Sunday’s guided walk celebrates the anniversary of the gold rush at Forest Creek 170 years ago, and reflects on how the early settlement grew into the Chewton of today.

Walk participants will meet at 11am at the Chewton CFA building in Mount Street before the guided tour leads them for about 700 metres through the town’s historic main streetscape.

Ken says he will provide all participants with a set of historical photos from times gone by so they can contrast how buildings and sites that exist today have altered over time.

He will also share stories and facts that span gold, tragedy and natural disaster, former enterprise, intriguing yesteryear characters and leisure time attractions ranging from the town’s first swimming pool to the plethora of yesteryear pubs that once existed.

"We will finish up at the town hall where people can view a display of more early photos and memorabilia,” says Ken who’s previously led a similar walking tour for the local primary school.

He says it’s hoped this Sunday’s tour may be the first of more such guided walking events in the future.

It was also perfect timing for me to collaborate with new musicians and artists to extend myself as a recording artist,” Phillips said.

“I worked with prodigious musicians Finn and Jim Inkster to record to tape on their Tascam Portastudio 488 MKII, taking an analog route as a sonic exploration. I learnt a lot from this process!”

Phillip’s vocals and guitar are the backbone of the album. Local musicians Uma Dingemans (Stop That Mammoth), Finn Inkster, Jim Inkster, Jez Furlong (Thistleswitch) and other friends backing with harmony vocals have played and assisted with instrumentation on the album. After recording, the songs were given to Elvis

Walsh (00_ and Dog Rocks radio Main FM) who mixed and mastered the album for digital release.

“Another thing I was keen to do was to invite my friends and community to submit artworks to the album project, and I’ve allocated one artwork to each track for release. I wanted this album to be very much a collaborative project and these artworks accentuate back story as well as supporting emerging talent too,” Phillips said.

Castlemaine singer/songwriter Nadia Phillips has launched her highly anticipated debut album A Million Birds and One Stone.

The EP has hit Bandcamp and music streaming services just as the talented 19-year-old, now based in Melbourne, and band The Girlfriends prepare to join fellow Castlemaine artists Dallas Woods and Galaxy Hop as part of the 'Comin Down the Calder' troupe to descend on Melbourne Music Week tomorrow.

Phillips and the eclectic lineup will play the special show at Melbourne's Curtin Hotel at 7.30pm.

The showcase is part of the Regional Music Development pilot program in Mount Alexander Shire – funded by Creative Victoria and delivered in partnership by Music Victoria and Regional Arts Victoria.

Growing up in Castlemaine, Phillips enjoyed an upbringing surrounded by music, art and nature. Piano tuition from an early age shaped her passion. She has since been playing guitar to write, record and perform.

The artist said complexities of self understanding and the longing to understand others drove her songwriting.

Since October 2020, Phillips has set a pace with the release of two singles – On Reflection and Your Dark Side – plus EP Sort It Out with her band ‘Nadia and The Girlfriends’. She has attracted insightful reviews in Australia, UK and Belgium and between lockdowns has performed live with successful shows at venues in Castlemaine, Daylesford and Melbourne.

Nurturing the bereaved

Kyneton holistic wellness business Maiaveda has partnered with the Macedon Ranges Suicide Prevention Action Group to nurture those who are using their experience of suicide to support others in their bereavement.

Owner Marye O’Brien started fundraising on World Suicide Prevention Day in September and has reached more than $1400 through online donations, clients 'paying it forward' and a facilitated sound bath meditation.

“Not only have I lost friends, clients and held those who have lost a loved one to suicide in my arms, I am witnessing the toll these lockdowns and this pandemic is having on my community, and our collective mental health,” Marye says.

“Hardships can humble us. Adversity can remind us how fragile this one life is. Major challenges can heighten our attention to even the smallest gestures of kindness or beauty. Our community is what Maiaveda values the most.”

Maiaveda’s generosity has meant 16 of MRSPAG’s volunteer peer support workers and current members attending due to bereavement from suicide, will receive treatment vouchers for their selfless contributions.

MRSPAG has been a visible presence in the community since September 2014 when its inaugural suicide prevention awareness walk was held.

The group’s formation followed two years of information and evidence gathering that culminated with a meeting of key stakeholders to establish a suicide prevention action plan.

This was a critical community driven response to a devastating two decades that saw the suicide rate for the Macedon Ranges increase between 1989 and 2010, unlike the downward state and national trends.

It was clear from those meetings several years ago that support for those bereaved by suicide was difficult to access locally.

MRSPAG facilitates monthly opportunities for people who have been bereaved by suicide to come together and access helpful information, build a sense of community and show mutual support.

Meetings are held at the Newham Mechanics Hall on the second Monday of the month.

Gone fishing Macedon Primary School students have helped to restock Nursery Reservoir with fish as their landcare fishing program launched last month.

Students were involved in the release of 250 catchable rainbow trout (and some surprise ex-brood stock trout) with a fisheries team from Snobs Creek.

Fisheries officers offered their knowledge along with special guest visitor Victorian Fisheries Authority director Brian Mottram.

Principal Matthew Forrest said he was thrilled the students had the opportunity to be involved.

“We are so fortunate to have our school so close to the Macedon reservoir and to be able to provide this unique opportunity for our students,” he said.

Students also enjoyed a session with Fish Care, which focused on sustainable, educational fishing.

They were taught how to identify fish, learnt about size and bag limits, and practised tying a basic fishing knot.

As part of the fish release event, students had the option to participate in a practical lesson where they could try their hand at fishing.

The school was gifted a class set of fishing rods and the teachers look forward to seeing the grade six students in action at their upcoming school camp.

The school’s close proximity to the

reservoir and the strong landcare program is what inspired parent Cara Cummings to approach the school and help create the program.

The program is designed to teach students the importance of healthy waterways through citizen science, learn the rules and regulations of recreational fishing and engage in fish care.

Ms Cummings is an ambassador for Women in Recreational Fishing and Black Magic Tackle pro-angler, and was delighted to see students enjoy the program.

“Getting children involved in fishing is a wonderful hobby to explore,” she said.

“Aside from the benefits of being outside and immersing oneself in nature, children learn patience, resilience, skill and enjoy time bonding with family and friends.”

The school has incorporated the program into their landcare activities with teacher David Oxworth at the helm.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students,” he said.

“With the donation of the fishing rods, we plan to include fishing as a regular part of our camps and landcare program.

“We greatly appreciate the enthusiastic work done by Cara Cummings to get this program under way, as well as the additional support we have received from Fish Care and the Victorian Fisheries Authority.”

Loddon Mallee residents can have their say on proposed strategic fuel break locations to reduce the risk of bushfires on the community and environment.

A fuel break is a strip of cleared land that is constructed by permanently changing the vegetation through mulching, tree thinning and hazardous tree removal.

Fuel breaks are critical to protecting communities, catchments and the environment from bushfires, as well as providing access for firefighters to respond to bushfires.

Forest Fire Management Victoria deputy chief fire officer Loddon Mallee, Scott Falconer, said about 50-70 kilometres of strategic fuel breaks were being planned in communities in and around Castlemaine, Macedon, Inglewood, Kangaroo Flat, Kimbolton, Rainbow and Moonambel.

“By providing safer and quicker access for firefighters and heavy machinery, we greatly improve the chance of controlling bushfires before they spread and impact people and property," he said.

“Two types of fuel breaks are planned – asset protection breaks in park or state forest adjacent to houses, and landscape

protection breaks, which strengthen existing forest tracks forests used to stop fires before they spread.

“During the past few months, we have engaged with Traditional Owners, communities, environmental groups and landholders in these locations to seek feedback on areas of highest bushfire risk and where the breaks are best placed."

To also help determine locations for the new fuel breaks, FFMVic is working with land and fire managers, such as local councils and the CFA, to ensure they provide the greatest risk reduction to landscapes and assets, whilst considering impacts on biodiversity and cultural heritage.

This road ‘graffiti’ was spotted on Three Chain Road to warn drivers of wombats crossing.

'Road graffiti' from a likely wildlife rescuer artist has been been praised as Three Chain Road residents hope to see wildlife road trauma reduce.

The large yellow wombat sketch was seen sprayed on the road about 6kms west of Lancefield last week, alerting drivers to a nearby wombat that had been hit and killed by a car.

Three Chain Road resident Darryl Bennie commended the 'artist' for warning drivers of the incident and a potential regular crossing point.

"I think the idea of sketching the location of dead wombats on the road surface at the same time the dead wombat is checked out would better bring to the attention of the public the number of wombats that are killed on Three Chain Road and maybe reduce the number that are killed," he told the Express.

"The section of the road from Dons Road/Three Chain intersection to the location of this death is renowned for wombats."

Macedon Ranges wildlife rescuer Debbie Gwyther-Jones knows all too well the dangers for wombats and kangaroos crossing Three Chain Road, having at-

tended many incidents there.

While she acknowledged there would be a mixed community reaction to the sketch she understood the intent.

"It is definitely a hot spot for kangaroos and wombats being hit," she said.

"I think this (sketch) is a fantastic idea and very effective as a visual reminder to people. I have not seen this done before."

One Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network volunteer told the Express they had been out to at least 750 callouts for animals injured on local roadways this year alone.

Ms Gwyther-Jones said there were several factors that came into wildlife road trauma including road speed, driver inattention or complacency, poor driver vision of roadsides, lack of driver care, and other factors.

"Kangaroos and wombats often move around the same routes and cross in the same places so there is a greater need for community awareness around these locations," she said.

"Wildlife can be unpredictable around roads so accidents will happen but better education and visual reminders may help to reduce this."

Hepburn outdoor pools are now open for the summer season but the pool season will be a little different this year.

Hepburn Shire Council CEO Bradley Thomas said COVID-19 requirements and a sector-wide shortage of aquatics staff would initially reduce pool operating hours.

“We would love for more people to put up their hand and apply for a job with our aquatics team so we can extend the hours of operation of our local pools,” he said.

“We understand that staffing is also an issue for other pools this year... While lifeguards need to have certain qualifications, there are customer-facing roles such as community pool assistants, where you interact and connect with patrons, without the need for pool qualifications.

“We are aiming to make the opening

hours suitable for family and recreation use and will keep on reviewing and assessing the hours throughout the pool season. We will extend these hours where we can."

Under the Victorian Government’s Roadmap, all pool patrons aged 12 years and over must show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination, or exemption.

Pool opening hours are: Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 6pm, Monday to Friday (during school term) from 3pm to 7pm, school holidays and public holidays from 2pm to 6pm, closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Council operates a weather policy at the pools. Changes to the planned hours will be advertised on the council’s Facebook page.

The pool season extends until March 14.

Cellarbrations at Gisborne owner Tony Bongiovanni has been named Independent Brands Australia’s Hall of Fame inductee for 2021.

Bongiovanni joined IBA in 2006, and as a valued member for the past 15 years, he has constantly proved himself.

Witrhin three years of joining IBA, he won Cellarbrations Store of the Year and in 2012 also the coveted National Retailer of the Year Award.

An independent panel reviewed his induction based on his support of IBA, his contribution to independent liquor and his

focus on community support.

Australian Liquor Marketers' Chris Baddock said it was "hard to think of anyone more passionate about independent retail".

He said Bongiovanni was a dedicated and passionate retailer with vast experience and deserving of the honour.

Thanking his team and IBA, Bongiovanni said he was thrilled to be acknowledged for his ongoing commitment.

"I’m looking forward to years ahead as the independents prosper during the challenges that lay ahead," he said.

The plan focuses on encouraging responsible pet ownership, promoting awareness and behaviour change, improving dog and cat registration rates, reducing the number of wandering dogs and cats, reducing the impacts of cats on the environment, and, further enhancing the use of public places for exercising dogs.

Power partnership

Fifty years of bloody good yarns Kyneton Handweavers and Spinners celebrated 50 years of bloody good yarns last month with a spinning demonstration in the Kyneton Library.

Members Ruth Harper, Kaylene Coulter and Kristin Duckworth enjoyed banter with library goers as they spun their wool together for the first time in many months after being stuck at home in lockdown.

"We do it for the joy of it and because we enjoy working with textiles, and it's part of the history of the area for wool production," Kaylene said.

"It's also very meditative, it helps you clear your mind."

"It helps you slow down and leave the fast pace of the world behind," Kristin said.

"Producing your own yarn, your own clothes."

Kyneton Handweavers and Spinners was formed on November 6, 1971, when 10 women and one man came together and decided to start a local group.

Now with a membership of about 50 spinners, their handiwork can be found on display each year at the Kyneton Show, the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Fes-

"There does seem to be a resurgence of interest in those old skills," Kaylene said.

"Back in the 1960s and 70s it was really booming," Kristin said, "the thick and lumpy, chunky handspun jumpers – all brown – but these days it's finer work with a lot of colour."

The group has one of the best reputations in the state and boasts talented and experienced members happy to pass on their skills to newcomers wanting to learn how to spin, weave, felt, knit, crochet and more.

Skill sharing has grown from around the circle to now holding formal workshops twice a year and mini-demonstrations.

Every meeting there is something new to learn, see and inspire you to try something that you hadn't thought of trying before.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has joined the Cities Power Partnership.

The move aligns MRSC with more than 150 councils nationwide dedicated to a zeroemissions future, cutting greenhouse gas pollution and tackling climate change.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the partnership represented almost 60 per cent of Australia’s population.

“By joining the CPP, MRSC confirms its commitment to climate action and reinforces its March 2021 declaration of climate emergency,” she said.

“Through the program, the council has the opportunity to build on its emissions reduction work to date, share knowledge and experience with fellow member councils, and contribute to a collaborative effort to effectively address climate change at the local level.

“We understand that meaningful action on climate change is a high priority for our residents and ratepayers and CPP will be an important step for the council to kick start a number of important local climate projects."

The CPP is a free national program created by the Climate Council that celebrates and accelerates the pollution reduction and clean energy successes of Australia in towns and cities.

Since the program’s inception, CPP councils have launched more than 780 climate projects.

Professor Miles Lewis gave an absorbing lecture about a largely unknown aspect of Victoria’s rich architectural, cultural and economic history at The Hub in Romsey recently.

During the 19th century, mainly 18401880, many buildings were imported into Australia because of a lack of building materials.

A large number of these buildings were imported from Singapore and Romsey’s Seymour Cottage is one such portable building.

Prof Lewis’s recent research about the cottage fascinated audience members who enjoyed an extensive and informative question time.

The Romsey and Lancefield Districts Historical Society were delighted to have attracted a large audience of local history enthusiasts (including a Seymour descendant), as well as many of Melbourne’s distinguished heritage consultants and heritage architects.

The society also announced that it will hold a second History Tea at Seymour Cottage as part of the Macedon Ranges Autumn Festival.

The History Tea will be held on April 10 next year. In the meantime, the society will continue to raise funding for the restoration of the cottage.

Hang, who is also CEO of Whitelion Youth, which provides mentoring, job training and other supports for at-risk young people, will be the guest speaker at the next Birds of a Feather lunch on Friday December 17.

“Our first lunch last month was a great success with over 60 people attending,” says Belinda Brain, one of the organisers from Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health.

“Usually the lunches will be quarterly but as the first one was postponed by a couple of months we’ve ended up with two close together.”

The gathering at the Shamrock Hotel in Kyneton is an opportunity for adults who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex to connect. Meals and drinks at bar prices and RSVPs are essential.

Macedon Ranges Council has delayed a decision on a policy that calls for councillor accountability in planning matters.

Councillors deferred the Councillor Interaction with External Planning Matters policy last week to clarify the extent to which the policy will monitor councillor conduct.

The policy defines how councillors can interact with external parties in relation to planning and what interactions must be recorded to ensure transparency.

Councillor Rob Guthrie sought to increase the level of interactions that needed to be recorded but was met with a mixed reaction from fellow councillors.

Councillors questioned the extent to which the policy would apply including casual supermarket conversations and other everyday situations.

Some felt increasing the level of interactions that needed to be recorded would add unnecessary process while others stated that councillors had “nothing to hide”.

After 30 minutes of debate, councillors agreed to defer a decision until March.

Ranges safety highlighted Road safety, safety of property and possessions, and a lack of nearby 24-hour police stations have emerged as the top three safety concerns for Macedon Ranges.

The feedback came from Engage Victoria Community Safety Survey which attracted more than 550 respondents from the shire.

Respondents also identified the top three police services adding to the community as: more foot patrols, community event attendance, and increased information sharing.

In response, local police say that, in the short-term, more members are being trained to manage the official 'Eyewatch - Macedon Ranges Police Service Area' Facebook page to increase information sharing.

They say implementation of the Victoria Police Neighbourhood Policing Framework will soon see a state-wide focus on listening to local communities, understanding local problems and targeting an appropriate response.

Police say partnerships with local services and community members are critical to the framework’s success.

Business Kyneton have brightened up the Kyneton Mechanics Reserve by creating and installing ornamental Christmas trees.

Capturing life at the edge Lisa Dennis

Castlemaine photographer Gary Chapman is pictured with the new book and some of his incredible landscape works.

"They are not necessarily all high level aerials, some are 'low level' shots from about 15 to 20 metres, which show quite a bit of detail and a vista many are ordinarily unable to see," he said.

Photography has seen Chapman and his wife Adelynne travel far and wide and enjoy some of the most spectacular scenery our beautiful country has to offer.

The photographer said one of his

favourite places to shoot was right on our doorstep at Lake Cairn Curran but none of those shots made this edition. He also enjoyed the chance to capture some new images of Castlemaine during the lockdowns.

"It was like a ghost town, really eerie without all the cars and activity," he said.

Chapman recently purchased a new high-tech quadcopter and enjoyed the

opportunity to take a trip to the coast last month to give it a spin with Adelynne and their new border collie pup Henry while their shopfront – Chapman's Fine Framing and Photography – was undergoing renovations.

"Adelynne and Henry enjoyed walks on the beach and I enjoyed capturing some new images. It's never really a holiday for me!" Chapman laughed.

The captivating landscape works of Castlemaine photographer Gary Chapman are featured in a new major publication Life at the Edge: Why Australians Love the Water produced by Thames & Hudson.

The local photographer was chuffed to have 13 of his images selected for the book.

"It's a beautiful publication. It's a follow up to one published two years ago, In an Australian Light, which also featured quite a few of my images," he said.

Chapman has been capturing beautiful landscape works for 30 years and shares his images via his platform Photos Australia and the boutique stock photo agency – Austock Photos.

He said it was via the Austock platform that 17 of his images were shortlisted for the latest publication with 13 making the final cut.

The photographer said he was always pleasantly surprised by what images were selected via the platform and for publications.

"Shots range from the Great Ocean Road to the Sunshine Coast and Tasmania. One of the panoramas I absolutely love is in there but also some drone shots, images of close-up detail such as shells, and a split-level shot featuring both underwater and coastline in the one image.

These are extremely challenging to do," he said.

In recent years Chapman has taken his photography skills to new heights through the use of a drone.

He enjoys taking shots that offer a different perspective.

All is new for an old town icon A famous Kyneton landmark is undergoing some minor changes in readiness for its new life to officially begin this Thursday, December 9. Exciting plans to improve the facade and accommodation are also in the works.

The pub on the corner of Market and Mollison Streets has had a name change. While it’s been called by several names throughout the years, things are changing along with the name which is now simply The Kyneton Hotel.

There are three new owners now behind the hotel including licensee and general manager Sam Fielke (pictured) who has a strong background in the hospitality industry.

“We came across the pub for sale and saw its potential,” Sam says.

Sam grew up in a small regional town and understands community spirit and is planning to translate that into how he runs The Kyneton Hotel.

“We’ll be looking after locals first and foremost,” he says.

That means understanding local tastes, yet providing a range of new alternatives.

Drinks will be one of the first noticeable changes with an emphasis on wines and popular beers.

Wines will be a big focus, Sam says, and while they will include some locals such as those by Granite Hills and Curly Flat, there will also be a South Australian influence, after all that’s the state Sam hails from!

The tap beers will feature three domestic beers plus the rotation of five craft beers. Fresh, new and of the highest quality.

While food from the hotel’s own kitchen is something still being planned under the guidance of a new chef and staff, it has not been forgotten, nor has it come off second best to the beer and wine...

Food for the next few months will be from a visiting mobile kitchen (after all, there is that comfortable courtyard at the back of The Kyneton Hotel) and it’s from the hugely popular Bluebonnet Barbecue, which draws scores of followers each week to its premises in Lygon Street, East Brunswick.

On the menu from Bluebonnet will be American style barbecue treats such as pork ribs, brisket, home-made sausages and more plus those most wanted sides and desserts.

The Kyneton Hotel will be open 7 days a week and Bluebonnet Barbecue will be there Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays under Sam’s watchful eye, with assistance for the time being (while on long service leave) from his partner Alison.

The Bluebonnet Barbecue will not be providing food on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day when The Kyneton Hotel patrons are invited to BYO food or order in takeaway while they enjoy their drinks.

When the New Year kicks in it will be a case of ‘watch this space’ because there are many new plans for this pub.

A free community Christmas lunch and celebration at the Castlemaine Town Hall will bring cheer on Christmas Day. Castlemaine Community House manager Martyn Shaddick said the lunch brought joy and connectivity to the people in the Mount Alexander community each year.

“Last year our lunch focused on connections, encouraging community members to connect with each other, in response to the isolation many felt in 2020," Mr Shaddick said.

"This year our theme is 'Being Kind Together', as an invitation for us all to take a kinder, gentler approach with each other and ourselves."

In 2020, Castlemaine Community House coordinated the Christmas Lunch for the first time, giving the St Vincent de Paul Society a well-earned break after so many years at the wheel.

But with years of experience delivering the weekly Castlemaine Community Lunch, and ongoing support from St Vincent de Paul Society, The Salvation Army, CHIRP Community Health and Mount Alexander Shire Council, the 2020 Community Christmas Lunch was a huge success.

“The 2020 Community Christmas Lunch provided 120 people with meals, but more importantly, it provided a safe and welcoming place for people to gather and celebrate together on Christmas Day,” said Kerrily Jennings, community development coordinator at CCH. “We had fantastic food, activities to encourage people to make new connections

Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s ‘Healthy Landscapes for Healthy Livestock’ project has won the Premiers Choice Regional Recognition Award at the 2021 Premier’s Sustainability Awards.

Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said the win was credit to all those involved and congratulated the Healthy Landscapes team and landowners.

“The council supports increasing sustainable farming practices and we value the landowner’s commitment to making a positive change to improve soil, water and biodiversity while maintaining a productive property," she said.

“We know many of our landholders already farm sustainably, often using regenerative agricultural practices, but this program allows those with little or no knowledge in the area to gain a greater understanding of how to look holistically at the health of their land for both improved productivity and environmental outcomes."

The Healthy Landscapes for Healthy Livestock project was developed in response to opportunities identified to improve land management outcomes across the shire.

The program was specifically designed to help address issues around over grazing, weed invasion, loss of native grasslands and reports that some farmers were struggling to afford importing feed stock.

The aim was to build the capacity of local livestock farmers to implement regenerative agriculture techniques that improved soil health, enhanced biodiversity and enhanced onfarm resilience to a changing climate.

An evaluation from 110 participants indicated that 100 per cent of respondents had changed their land management practices in a positive way.

This program, which is now called the ‘Healthy Landscapes: Practical Regenerative Agricultural Communities program’, has been extended for another 12 months in partnership with Hepburn Shire Council, the City of Greater Bendigo, A Healthy Coliban Catchment project, Melbourne Water and the Upper Campaspe Landcare Network.

Now the major time for fires around your property is approaching, it's also time to check that you have sufficient resources to combat any fire that threatens. I won’t grind my teeth as I pass tree stumps dangerously left at the edge of the road.

I won’t gaze in disdain at the intersections with piles of crushed rock that are still sectioned off. I won’t shake my head and scoff at the innumerable bog holes that line the edge of roads, just waiting to catch unwary drivers who may pull off the road slightly to let another vehicle pass.

I won’t curse at the trees that have fallen since the storm that still protrude out onto the road. I won’t audibly curse when I see road signs still lying on the ground.

Perhaps most importantly, my faith in MRSC will be restored and I won’t be tempted to send my shire rates to the locals who have taken it upon themselves to clear trees and repair roads at their own expense.

Thank you MRSC. Just when I think you don’t have a clue. And here was I thinking a road grader was needed. Well done MRSC, well done.

Mind you, if I could suggest some gravel for the massive potholes that line Porkers Lane? That would do wonders for my mental health, but you know what you are doing.

Perhaps the council could subsidise these extra bins? At the same time, it would help if understandable instructions on the appropriate contents for each bin were included. It would be wonderful to be able to 'do our bit' for the environment.

Regional communities deserve respect Tania Maxwell MP, Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party Member for Northern Victoria In Parliament on December 3, I asked Government Services Minister Danny Pearson MP to review and boost state government advertising in regional and rural media.The government believes regional communities should have equal access to government communications. Government advertising in local media like this newspaper promotes public awareness of important information and other opportuni-

ties such as grant programs.

The Victorian government in 2019-20 spent almost $59 million on non-digital media advertising. Of this, $9.5m was spent on print, radio and outdoor advertising in our regions, slightly more than the government’s 15 per cent minimum advertising expenditure commitment to regional media every year.

But it’s a threshold that’s ridiculously low given the breadth and diversity of regional Victoria where there’s strong community reliance on trusted, locally reported news.

Regional media provide vital information in natural disasters and local context and scrutiny for local, state and federal political decisions. Losing local news is bad news for communities big or small. In its absence, people turn to social media, where the information published is rarely to the same standards of integrity practised by professional journalists.

My constituents value their local media.

Our government should value it, too, not just for sharing important news but by advertising with publishers and broadcasters. Reinvesting tax dollars in this way can help keep our communities’ connected to important local content and local context.

Due process required Hans Paas, Castlemaine Instead of heeding adverse findings by the ATO, Fair Work and Work Safe, resulting from ill treatment of staff, the rogue committee of Mount Alexander Animal Welfare continues on its path of wrongdoing in an effort to cover up that wrongdoing and suppress all criticism and dissent in the lead-up to this month's Annual General Meeting on December 19.

They have even added to the catalogue of injustices by seeking to improperly vet the nominations of MAAW members for committee positions and in one case have banned one member outright from nominating in an effort to rig the elections.

Instead of apologising for the hurt caused to staff and volunteers by their actions over the past 18 months and the massive blowouts in employee and administrative costs wasted on legal fees and settlements of claims, this 'tuck shop committee' of mainly MAAW Op Shop personnel are seeking to continue their reign over this vital community animal welfare organisation.

We can only hope that due process will be followed at the AGM and their attempts to maintain control of MAAW will fail and members and staff can get back to the business of animal welfare.

So Campbells Creek recreation reserve is finally getting a footpath from the main road up to the ground and beyond. It’s about time.

Are they going to begin the upgrades inside the reserve? I’ll bet not.

This reserve is the biggest and most underutilised rec reserve that I know of in our shire, surrounded by new housing and more to come.

Football is back and the away teams have to get changed in a small pre-fabricated donger. It’s a disgrace. Netball is back and the players have to get changed in their cars. Another disgrace.

There are no standalone toilet facilities at all. A bloody disgrace.

Council has been sitting on its hands as usual with regards to any upgrade works in our reserve for at least nine years.

It took me and Chris Cole three years when on council just to get a security fence around it. Back then council talked of a standalone toilet block complemented with change rooms so females could have sanitary facilities and privacy. That was six years ago!

Also when on council I suggested placing the off-lead dog park in an unused area down the back of the reserve; all the usual lame excuses were made not to.

More people walk their dogs in the reserve today than use the dog park at Wesley Hill. Go figure.

We need more vocal approach by user groups and rate payers with regards to our reserve to make things happen.

This reserve should be the mecca for activities in our shire as Campbells Creek is the growth area. So come on council tell us what’s in store in the near future.

Poor phone connectivity has proved more costly to the consumer for some Kyneton residents.

Resident Don Smith told the Express he was tired of paying for a top service that he was not getting from Telstra with persistent mobile blackspots.

"I'm in Mitchell Street and a lot of my neighbours have reported the same difficulties," he said.

"I actually asked for my money back. My wife is unwell and I really need reliable service. For years we have had this same trouble."

Mr Smith has since changed providers but has still had to buy an in-house booster, which put him more than $1000 out of pocket.

He was one of the many who contributed to the Macedon Ranges Council's survey into telecommunications across the shire in May. The survey identified that more than 70 per cent of respondents were not satisfied with their current reliability.

Just under 60 per cent of survey responses referred to being unable to access education. More than 90 per cent identified they were unable to work effectively from home.

Poor connectivity has not necessarily been linked to any one provider.

Challenges of increasing mobile coverage in Macedon Ranges included lower return on investment for infrastructure providers due to small population clusters and geographic features of

hills, valleys and wooded areas.

The shire also has significant landscapes designated, which restricts some locations from being considered for telecommunications infrastructure.

Telstra regional general manager Steve Tinker said plans were under way to correct the connectivity problems.

He said Telstra’s 5G, 4G and 3G coverage was available in and around Kyneton but acknowledged some customers were having issues with coverage inside their homes.

"We are working closely with the Macedon Ranges Shire Council to find a suitable site to build an extra mobile base station, which would expand and improve coverage in town," Mr Tinker said.

"In the meantime, we will soon be upgrading the town’s current site to provide more capacity to the area."

Mr Tinker said residents could improve their mobile coverage at home or work by using their nbn connection to access Wi-Fi calling.

"This is a free setting on most popular mobile phones and allows your mobile to use a Wi-Fi network to make and receive mobile calls," he said.

"In some cases, mobile coverage at home or in a vehicle can also be increased by fitting an external aerial or a phone booster.

"We also encourage business owners talk to their bank about connecting their EFTPOS terminals to their nbn or Wi-Fi connection to prevent delays in processing transactions."

This year on Christmas Day, the Malmsbury Cemetery Trust will be providing light refreshments at the cemetery for anyone who visits.

"Whether people are coming to contemplate, visit family or loved ones, or just take in the serenity of it all, we will be there to offer some company, beverages and snacks to everyone," board member Jeff Smith said.

"We all know that Christmas can be a lonely time for some people and visiting loved ones on this special day is a tradition for many families. So we are inviting people to the cemetery to remember those we can no longer give that big Christmas hug that fills our hearts with joy.

"We’d love for people to come along and enjoy Christmas with those who are missed, and take a small break and tell us a story about them.

"We appreciate learning more about the people we are looking after, it reminds us of the strong bonds of community and family in the district. "Providing people with the opportunity to comfortably reflect and reminisce on Christmas Day seems a perfect way to honour those who rest with us."

On Christmas morning, Christine Barker and Chris Byrnes will be offering tea, coffee and cold drinks to visitors to the cemetery between 10am and 11.30am as well as some seating for those who would like to rest.

Catch rays, not a fine

As the summer holiday season warms up, visitors to local forests and reserves are being reminded to follow important environmental rules when using nearby public land.

The 2021 firewood season ended last Tuesday meaning it is now illegal to collect firewood from public land and will remain so until the autumn firewood season starts next year.

Conservation Regulator and Forest Fire Management Victoria authorised officers will be visiting popular fishing and recreation spots over the coming weeks, to ensure everyone understands the dos and don’ts around litter, campfire safety, driving on public land and firewood collection.

On-the-spot fines will be issued to anyone caught breaking the rules.

Conservation Regulator acting program manager, Glenn Smith, said while most people did the right thing when out camping and fishing, there was a need to ensure everyone understood their responsibility to keep each other safe and protect the environment.

"Our patrols will be visiting as many sites as possible near rivers and waterways, to ensure people are enjoying the areas safely and obeying the rules,” Mr Smith said.

“Please take your rubbish with you. What you take in you must take out.

"Littering near waterways can have devastating impacts on native marine wildlife.

"If you are camping, you must ensure campfires are built according to regulations and don’t forget a bucket.

"All campfires must never be left unattended and need to be extinguished with water, not soil, as fires can still smoulder under soil.

"If a fire is cool to touch, it is safe to leave.”

With recent flooding and environmental watering of floodplains in some parts of the state, people are also being urged to check for track closures before they head out to explore.

"Driving off-road can be dangerous and also detrimental to the environment because it causes soil erosion and damage to native vegetation," Mr Smith said.

Big match in bowls Bill West

The seventh round of Highlands pennant bowls this Saturday should be highlighted by the Kyneton versus Gisborne clash.

The match is at Kyneton, and both sides know a loss will mean a slide out of the four, with fifth-placed Kyneton Golf poised to pounce by taking the points at Diggers Rest.

Lancefield, losing for the first time this season in a tight encounter against secondplaced Romsey, is at home to a Trentham side buoyed by a 19-shot win over Kilmore.

The other encounter is between Kilmore and Broadford, old rivals from the disbanded Central association.

Romsey has a bye.

At the weekend, Romsey’s three sides were victorious and the Redbacks are still trying to work out their best combination for a tilt at this season’s division one flag.

After a tie with Kilmore, Romsey division one worked hard to defeat the previously unbeaten Tigers by six shots. The outcome of all three rinks was still ‘alive’ on the final end.

Gisborne gained maximum points at Diggers Rest, with an overall margin of 32 shots, and equally Kyneton collected the 16 points at home to Broadford in a strong display.

Macedon went down by 16 shots at Broadford in division two, and Romsey

survived a tight battle at Trentham.

The Kyneton Croquet Club had their much-delayed season opening last week.

Richard Parker, founder and director of Rationale Skincare, was invited to run the first hoop and get the season going.

Rationale is in the process of establishing its global headquarters in Kyneton and Mr Parker was delighted to be asked to be guest of honour at a local sporting event and spoke of the heritage of the Kyneton Croquet Club and its place in the sport's history in Victoria.

After a few quick lessons in how to hold a croquet mallet from club president David Wauchope, Parker ran the first hoop at his first attempt. He then stayed and played a game with club members.

“It was such an honour to open the season and I thoroughly enjoyed learning some of the complex skills and strategies of this very civilised yet highly competitive game,” Parker said.

The club is now gearing up for a very busy season in the new year. Free 'come and try' sessions will be held in January and February, the Northern District Croquet Association pennant season will begin in February, while the club's own singles championship, the John Teed Cup, will begin in March.

Strong wins and close games

Team Doyle, led by current Open champ Patrick, mum Carolyn, Darcy and father Mick, took out Mount Macedon’s Gold Plate four-person stableford on Saturday.

Not to be, Team Doyle, led by current Open champ Patrick, saw off the challenge with a combined 112 points.

Andrew Clement (8 handicap) took out the stableford with 39 points on a countback from Mal Mottram (7).

Scott Williams (14) and Keith Hocking (32) were next best on 34. Mottram and Davey Kenney were nearest the pin.

Hope springs eternal, and this Saturday night three members of Lancefield Golf Club will be hoping outsider Lotsamuscle runs well in the $150,000 Inter Dominion Trotters’ Final at Menangle.

Graeme Brennan, Ray Schultz and Simon Hawkins have a small share in the five-yearold trained and driven by Terang reinsman Matt Craven.

Lotsamuscle is the first trotter they have ever dabbled in. The former New Zealand Derby winner reached the final with a win in the heat at Bathurst, and two fifths.

Craven predicts Lotsamuscle could be a surprise packet over the longer distance in the final.

SPORTS wrap Berries in Excitement for Woodsmen fine form

Malmsbury’s batsmen and bowlers were in fine form on Saturday, leading to easy victories in Jensen Shield and division two.

At the magnificently prepared MCG, the home side compiled an impressive 8/204c.c.from 40 overs.

A swashbuckling 60 not out by JD ‘Guns’ Singh late in the innings was the highlight against Lancefield; Parmy Singh 35, and 20 from Tom Logan, David Nolte and Dan Turner helped the cause against Lancefield.

The Tigers found the run chase tough, and finished on 9/149 (Mark Caton 32 n.o., Alan Sinclair 31.

Quentin Keeble and Turner excelled with three wickets apiece.

Against Rupertswood, openers Chris Ganim 62 and Justin Murphy 57 made a flying start, and Ryder Blizzard’s 20 help Malmsbury to a healthy 8/190 c.c Excellent bowling never gave the home side a chance, with wickets falling regularly for 102 all out (Ryan Hayes 37 n.o.) in just the 32nd over.

Sam Thorpe shone with 4/16, and Matt Cox 3/11 and Bayden Ganim 2/14 were also in form.

North grade was a different story, with a poor batting effort yielding 9/72 (Simon Rogers rock solid until run out for 16). A couple of run outs, rash shots and lack of concentration surfaced.

The Berries' bowlers did well, as Romsey lost six wickets in the run chase.

U17 Girls: In only their third match, there was further improvement as Malmsbury 5/106 lost to Rupertswood 2/123.

Stephanie Cox and Nicola Cox retired not out, and Anna Mifsud and Lucy Foster took wickets.

A game of learnings

Sunbury Macedon Ranges Veterans Cricket players are enjoying matches taking place, and a recent outing to Euroa was all that could be asked for.

After a washout and a bye, it was great to play on a manicured oval, with a turf wicket and white picket fence.

Brand new to the competition, the home side was a little under-manned, so much so that they were dismissed cheaply and allowed to recycle some of their batters.

Trevor Cue, playing his 100th Over 60s game for the club, bamboozled batsmen to clean bowl two and have the third stumped by Hoss Cartright, who has reached the remarkable feat of playing 450 games for Sunbury United CC. From 40 overs, Euroa managed 89 runs, and a corker first-ball delivery sent opener John Herron on his way.

Cue and Russell Pattinson made useful runs, Cartwright hit a quick 29, and the score eventually raced to 141 from 30 overs.

All in all, a game of learnings.

Vets’ cricket is about participation and not win at all costs, bowlers don’t need long run ups to take wickets, ‘keepers don’t always wear pads.

An astonishing McIntyre Cup victory on Saturday revitalised Woodend cricketers’ prospects for the rest of the season.

Without a victory in the first two rounds, the Woodsmen appeared to be almost down and out on two occasions against Sunbury Kangaroos at Gilbert Gordon Reserve.

Batting first, Woodend struggled to reach 9/123 before teenager Finn Hanegraaf hit a run-a-ball unbeaten 50, adding 53 for the last wicket with Brandan Sliwczynski 17 to reach a competitive 181.

Kangaroos appeared to be cruising to victory, but the last five wickets crashed without a run being scored – all out for 153 with captain Tom Robson and Warren Else each capturing three wickets.

With their openers dismissed early, Romsey batsmen struggled for runs at home to Bacchus Marsh, being bundled out for 100 (Matthew Milne 39, Sean Day 15 – Ian Spiteri 3-17). The visitors cruised to victory by compiling 3/101 (Sam Lalor 35 n.o., Nick Stranino 26.3 overs).

Kyneton Football Netball Club has been awarded the winner of the 2021 AFL Victoria Community Award Club Inclusion due to the club’s incredible work in the disability and LGBTQIA+ space.

Inclusion win for Tigers Kyneton Football Netball Club has been awarded the winner of the 2021 AFL Victoria Community Award Club Inclusion due to the club's incredible work in the disability and LGBTQIA+ space.

The Community Awards were presented via a live Facebook event last week to acknowledge the important role that community members state wide play in the growth and sustainability of grassroots football.

KFNC, with the help of the Macedon Ranges Shire Council, fielded a Football Integration Development Association team in 2021 – a huge achievement given the next closest FIDA team is an hour's drive away.

The club, with the help of major sponsor HomeCare Repair, was able to provide the necessary equipment required to ensure all players looked the part.

President Hayden Evans said the club was extremely proud to win the award and of the path it was on.

"We want to do everything to engage everyone in the

community and that meant putting in resources," Evans said.

"We want to be a ‘one club’ town, and to do that, you have to engage everyone."

In addition to FIDA, the Tigers hosted their first Pride Cup event and had the influential AFLW Darcy Vescio speak to a large crowd while focusing on the equality and fairness at the club, which was shared with the community in true Tiger Tribe style – with passion, energy and fun.

With this year starting to wind down, the Tigers are now focused on 2022 and have begun netball and women’s football trials.

Anyone interested in playing women’s football is welcome to attend ‘come and try’ days on December 8 and 15 at Sacred Heart College Oval Kyneton.

Women’s football director, Eloise Forbes, said the KFNC Senior Women's team had been going from strength to strength in the last couple of years despite

pandemic disruptions.

"We definitely see our team not only living, but really driving those values around inclusion, so if you're 16 or over and want to be part of a great group of players of all levels of experience, come along to a session or get in touch for a chat," Forbes said.

TIGERS ELECT OFFICE BEARERS Kyneton Football Netball Club elected its office bearers for season 2022 at its recent AGM. Returning to the president's role is Hayden Evans, with support from vice-president Travis Prendergast, treasurer David Yunghanns and secretary Vini Pinto.

It must surely be some sort of record for a gallops meeting held at Kyneton. Probably one that will never be beaten.

Five horses prepared by five individual Kyneton-based trainers were winners on the local club’s eight-event race meeting early last week.

With spectators finally allowed back on course, the eight-event program was another step forward towards normality.

If anyone had dared to suggest beforehand there would be five local winners – with one starting at lucrative odds of $81 – you would be hard pressed to find a true believer.

The opening event was a 3-Y-O Maiden Plate over 1200m, and trainer Mick Sell hoped that Mobamba, ridden by Craig Robertson, would produce the ability he was sure was there.

And so it unfolded, the $81 chance having his fifth race start raced wide and ran on to win by 0.2 lengths. Woodend Hesket Racing Syndicate is among the part-owners.

Race 2, and George Osborne produced

the unraced Kyokushin ($8) in the Maiden Plate. Alana Kelly had the ride, and Kyokushin edged out Sell’s Boho Miss with a strong finishing burst, coming from well back in the field.

Some of the part-owners came from interstate to see their horse break through.

On to the fifth race, and Liam Howley’s Almighty Will, ridden by Jason Maskiell, was mid-field for much of the 1450m and fought on at odds of $4.80 to chalk up his fifth race victory.

Then it was Lavrovsky’s turn to break through for trainer Michael Jones, leading throughout at $16 in the BM 58 event over 1850m.

Ridden by Jarrod Fry, it was the six-yearold’s second race victory from 29 outings, with total stake earnings now $77,345.

The ‘lucky last’ arrived over 1200m, and it was French Star in the Bob Challis stable who put her best foot forward to win by a length.

The mare was ridden by Logan McGill, All happy: Kyneton trainer Michael Jones and partner/part owner Ashlee Smith and started at $11, with Osborne’s My Divas and strapper/track rider Aftab with Lavrovsky after winning the bet365 Odds Drift appearing to be an unlucky runner.
