A 'sign of the times' is the way the looming sale of two historic Uniting Churches is being described by what remains of their once-strong congregations at Yandoit and Newstead.

The two historic churches are ear-

marked for sale with the much-diminished and ageing congregations in each location struggling to cover costs for their ongoing maintenance and upkeep.

of final closing services and gatherings set for the Yandoit church on May 16, and for the Newstead church on June 27.

"The desire is that they will remain in the community as gathering places," Rev Tomilson told the Express on site at the 1875-built Yandoit church where the congregation has dwindled to just five locals

- a far cry from the heydays when Yandoit boasted a population of 7000 with churches of multiple denominations.

"It frustrates me because once they go, they're lost," said Yandoit local Steve O'Connor, one of the few remaining parishioners.

Mr O'Connor and his wife Kaye were married at the old church in 1980 and the couple's connections to this old goldfields brick and stained-glass place of worship are strong.

"My father, Max O'Connor, was a Methodist minister here in the '60s and my wife's great great grandfather helped build the church back in 1875," Mr O'Connor said.

"It'll become a weekender or something, like others around here. It's the ongoing costs that kill it. It's just not feasible to do."

Ms O'Connor said the old church had presided over countless occasions, celebrations and services and she well remembered Sunday School days spent there as a child.

"I think it's a sign of the times," she said.

"One the big things is that people are ageing. In a nutshell, each church has to cover the costs of its own maintenance insurance, power, outreach, stipends to the minister - and when you've only got five people..."

Among them Newstead and District Affordable Housing member, former local councillor John Nieman believes it "ticks all the boxes" for social housing.

"Two of the parishioners have both said they'd love to see it developed as social accommodation in some way," Mr Nieman said.

"We're overserviced in churches. It's a function of time, history and geography."

Rev Tomilson - whose parish encompasses Castlemaine, Harcourt, Yandoit and Newstead - said the specifics for sale of the two churches had yet to be clarified.

"Unfortunately it is a common thing as congregations are diminishing," Rev Tomilson said.

"We hope the sales go to benefit the wider community, or that they can be be used in some way that connects the community."

Resubdivision denied

Macedon Ranges Council have rejected a re-subdivision bid that would change the ‘face of Woodend’.

The 3.5 hectares at 36 Sullivan Road currently comprises 16 lots of about 1750sm in area but a proposed six-lot increase would have reduced lot sizes to between 1207sm and 1363sm.

The proposal attracted five objections with the site located 1.3 kilometres southeast of the Woodend town centre, directly adjacent to the township boundary.

In urging its refusal, Cr Anne Moore said proposal was “totally inappropriate for the area” and “did not respond appropriately to existing neighbourhood character and site constraints”.

“It totally lacks any interface with the adjoining property of a larger lot size, rural setting zone… the native vegetation that they’re wanting to remove is native habitat,” she said.

A reminder that ratepayers and residents have until 5.00pm on Wednesday 19 May to make a submission on Mount Alexander Shire Council’s Proposed Budget 2021/2022. It can be viewed during office hours at the Civic Centre, the Castlemaine Library or on Council’s website at mountalexander.vic.gov.au/Budget.

The first stage in plans to transform The Old Kyneton Hospital site with co-located child and aged-care facilities has been approved.

Macedon Ranges Council signed off on the childcare centre aspect of the plan last week with 39 permit conditions and changes to the driveway crossing locations.

The long-awaited site action follows aged-care provider Embracia Victoria's purchase of the 67 Simpson Street property in November 2019.

Plans for childcare centre reveal a double-storey development on the north-eastern corner of the site to accommodate up to 120 children and 24 staff, operating on weekdays.

The centre would include five childcare rooms for children up to five years and one infantcare room, as well as outdoor play areas.

While many have welcomed reinvigoration of the site, which has had several false-starts under different ownership, there has been some push back to design and function of the childcare centre including six formal objections. Loss of views, site entry, amenity and traffic safety impacts were high among objector concerns as well as the potential loss of a direct pedestrian connection to Campaspe River through the site.

A road reserve through the centre of the site to Mill Street was previously discontinued and consolidated into the subject land and is no longer a right of way or other formal public accessway. Embracia Victoria has stated there are no plans to alter the public accessway at this stage of the proposal.

Councillors also held concern with a retarding basin in the plan that was not on the same land as the proposal but on adjoining rural land by the same owner – an atypical arrangement.

Cr Mark Ridgeway said the move would set a "dangerous precedent for actions taken by the council down the track".

Cr Jennifer Anderson said the council had a responsibility to protect rural land and biodiversity.

"If you have to extend your urban infrastructure into a non-urban zone then you shouldn’t be allowed to have that size of development," she said.

The proposal was refused in a 8-1 vote, against officer recommendation, with Cr Geoff Neil the outlier.

Photo: Sandy Scheltema More than 40 state, national and international groups are calling on the state government to accept recommendations for new national parks in the state’s central west including Wombat State Forest.

Following the two-year expert investigation by the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council, recommendations have been made for large areas of public forests of the Wombat, Wellsford, Mount Cole and Pyrenees Ranges in Victoria’s central west to become national (almost 60,000 hectares) or regional parks (almost 20,000 hectares).

The collaboration of groups is coordinated by local community conservation group Wombat Forestcare, which says the state government's decision is already more than 12 months overdue.

Wombat Forestcare's Gayle Osborne said after years in the making, the lack of action had left conservation groups from around the state feeling deeply disappointed.

“The Wombat Forest has so many values that need protecting;

the headwaters of six major rivers, many rare and threatened species and the storage of carbon," she said.

“How long do we have to wait for the Victorian Government to take nature protection issues seriously?”

The purpose of the investigation was to identify the natural and cultural values and make balanced recommendations about how to best conserve them.

News Transitioning to clean energy Jo Kaptein, program lead, MASH community solar bulk-buy organised by the Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance There’s no doubt that solar is booming.

It’s now a mainstream purchase item for many households and businesses quite simply because solar can be a good financial investment with a payback of about three to five years.

We’re seeing this solar boom in the Mount Alexander and Macedon Ranges Shires where the uptake of household solar beats the Aussie average of one in five homes by quite some way.

In Mount Alexander Shire, 35.5 per cent of homes have solar and the Macedon Ranges Shire is not far behind at 29 per cent. We’re doing well but we still have some way to go compared to Indigo Shire (Beechworth and surrounds), which has 44 per cent household solar!

The MASH Community Solar BulkBuy has seen strong interest in the last 12 months resulting in over 300 systems installed across the central Victorian region that we serve. These systems have added an additional 1.6MW of new solar generation capacity, which is reducing greenhouse gas emissions by about 2300 tonnes a year (equal to about 500 less cars on the roads).

It’s all good stuff and shows that solar is here to stay. But it’s not without its challenges – and a big one is our ageing electricity grid.

The good news is that a number of groups including the CVGA have made bids to trial neighbourhood batteries in our region. Neighbourhood or community batteries could mean that homes that don’t have solar would be able to purchase electricity from the community battery. It would also allow solar homes to export their excess power into the community battery and be paid for it.

Kyneton Agricultural Society and Maldon and Baringhup Agricultural Society are among 46 to benefit from state government funding as they prepare to reopen their popular agricultural shows to the crowds.

Kyneton will receive $3610 for provision of a power upgrade and Maldon and Baringhup will receive $7533 to purchase a new display case.

The grants aim to help societies upgrade or establish new facilities, increase local involvement in show activities and create opportunities for agricultural businesses.

The support comes after societies experienced a tough year in 2020 with shows cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Parents of young children - particularly mothers - want the best for their kids, but often don't make time for themselves, particularly when it comes to exercise.

Bubs on Bikes cycling expo includes three inspiring and informative events for parents of young children wanting more options for transport, exercise and fun.

The expo includes a free screening of MOTHERLOAD the movie on Saturday May 22 at 7pm; a cargo bike PLUS expo from 10-2 on Sunday May 23; and a follow-up bike riding workshop for parents on June 6.

MOTHERLOAD is a movie in which director Liz Canning explores motherhood in the digital age of climate change.

CycleSafe Mount Alexander in partnership with Bike Bendigo builds on the screening to inform parents of the benefits and ease of carrying children on a bike.

The cargo bike plus event provides parents with an opportunity to try cargo bikes and trailers and chat with cargo bike distributors and parents who use them.

Active travel allows parents to exercise with their kids and is an ideal way to fit exercise into every day. However, the need to carry children makes cycling a barrier for many parents.

"If you’ve always been kid-carrying-bike-curious and wondered just what one of these very practical bikes would be like to ride you can’t go past this Bubs on Bikes event,” Penny from CycleSafe said.

There will be bikes of every description from box trikes, to long tails and everything in between. All you need to bring is your helmet, and maybe the kids and some groceries for testing purposes! Not only will there be an array of bikes to try, but also plenty of people who can answer all your questions and fill you in on everything you need to know.

And to make your day full of ease there will be free vegetarian paella available and child-focused bike entertainment by Paddy Toasty.

Mark Kluwer is a tradie who now carries a different set of tools.

In a search for fulfilment in his early 50s, he unlocked the power of breath and connection.

Mark is now helping others find healing through a breathwork and ice water therapy technique that he says has the potential to change a life.

The breathwork Mark guides is rooted in the Tummo Breathing Technique practised by monks in Tibetan Buddhism, and in pranayama yoga, while cold water therapy has been practised in many locations around the world.

These have both been popularised by Dutch athlete Wim Hof who was known as 'The Iceman' for his record-breaking ability to withstand cold temperatures.

His technique includes three pillars: cold therapy, breathing and meditation, that together aim to improve physical and mental wellbeing.

The technique has been associated with reducing inflammation, improving sleep, boosting the immune system and a range of other benefits.

Mark met Wim Hof at a retreat in an experience he says completely changed his life.

"I was pretty uninspired with life at 50 and my daughters had grown up. I was searching for something and this gave me an opportunity," Mark said.

"So I went to the first day, and for the next five days I experienced an outpouring of emotion that set me free, mate."

Inspired by the experience, Mark has turned to help others.

Mark says the guided workshops are a chance for people to open up and heal.

Glenlyon men's event Mark is challenging others to experience the power of breath and connection at a men's event at Glenlyon Town Hall on Friday May 14.

He describes the event as "a relaxed night of blokes coming together to feast on local produce around a fire, chatting and learning a very simple breathing technique".

Mark will host the event with his mate Bohdan Evans, of Glenlyon's Catherine Farm, who has benefited from the breathing technique following his experience with post traumatic stress disorder and a family suicide.

The event is also a fundraiser for Hope Bereavement Care, a not-for-profit counselling service, offering free information, support and counselling, when grieving the death of a child or sudden death of an adult and those experiencing loss after suicide.

The men's event will be held at the Glenlyon Hall on Friday May 14, from 5pm to 9pm.

Cost is $60 per head which includes all food. All profits will go to Hope Bereavement Care.

Proposed Budget 2021/2022 Budget summary

Council has prepared a $39.61 million budget for 2021/2022.

The increase in total rate revenue collected across the shire will be capped at 1.5% in line with the cap set by the Victorian Government. Rate changes for individual properties may be higher or lower than 1.5%, due to annual property revaluations. Kerbside bin collection charges will be frozen at last year’s levels.

Three local sporting groups have been approved for funding under Macedon Ranges Council's Small Project Grants program.

Kyneton Football Netball Club will receive $1500 to help host the Pride Cup match against Eaglehawk this month.

The project aims to promote, educate and support the community around LGBTQI awareness and acceptance, provide education sessions and create a safe, inclusive, diverse and welcoming community.

Romsey Basketball Association will receive $1400 to re-launch an all-abilities junior basketball competition based at the Romsey Recreation Centre.

The funds will assist with the initial set-up of the competition such as equipment purchases, court hire and umpire costs.

Hanging Rock Cricket Association will receive $1500 towards a replacement fridge and barbecue that were destroyed when vandals attacked their premises in January.

Hosting barbecues and gatherings was the club's main means for fundraising and bringing players and families together for social events.

The council’s Small Project Grants budget for 2020/21 is $36,000 and not-for-profit groups can apply for a maximum of $1500 per application.

Kyneton Farmers Market is on again this Saturday from 8.30am -1pm in St Pauls Park, Piper Street.

This month the market welcomes three new stallholders: Catherine Farm, Moonshine Pottery and Yemmlane Knits by hand and loom.

Five facts you may not know about garlic • Australians eat more garlic than they grow. Only 39 per cent of Australians eat fresh garlic. We consume an estimated 16,000 tonnes of garlic but grow only 3000 tonnes. China grows two-thirds of the world's garlic.

• The young stem and unopen flower bud of garlic is called a 'scape'. Scapes are considered a delicacy and can be found in farmers markets for sale during spring.

• National Garlic Day falls on April 19. If you missed it this year, plan a Garlic Food Party for 2022!

• Garlic comes in different colours, white, red/purple and black. Black garlic is fresh raw garlic that changes in colour and texture when aged by low heat. It is a slow process taking a number of weeks. It has a mild sweet taste and a chewy consistency.

• Old and new wisdom says garlic is good for you. A compilation of Egyptian medical texts known as Codex Ebers (about 1500BC) includes at least 20 garlicbased remedies. When Tutankhamen’s tomb was discovered in 1922 among the artefacts discovered were six cloves of dried garlic in perfect condition.

Many varieties of garlic are grown in the Macedon Ranges. It is a crop that can take six-eight months before harvest and that's why you won't find garlic at the market year round.

This Saturday you will find two local garlic producers at the market. Pipers Creek Produce will have garlic for both eating and planting. It's not too late to plant garlic.

Fans of seasonal, slow food will also be excited to find black garlic from local producer Knagwood Garlic Farm at the Kyneton Farmers Market on Saturday.

Local men have been cooking up a storm in a Men's Kitchen course being run in the Glenlyon Fire Station.

An initiative of University of the Third Age Kyneton in collaboration with U3A Daylesford, the program runs twice a year, one morning a week for five consecutive weeks.

What great delights and expertise have been achieved after this first course!

Sifado with Greek salad, baklava, vegetable tagine and fattoush salad, cherry clafoutis to name a few dishes. Is your mouth watering yet?

Robert Wooler, chef extraordinaire, demonstrates a different two-course menu every week. Participants assist in food preparation and Robert demonstrates not only cooking techniques, but that ability to time everything to perfection.

At the end of each session, ideas are formulated for the next week's menu. The cost of the course is $50 and additional $10 per week. This covers both food and a glass of wine.

Not only are you fine tuning your culinary skills guys but it offers a wonderful forum for discussion and socialisation.

Festive cheer?

More festive cheer could be spread throughout the Ranges in December as Macedon Ranges Shire Council explores options for town Christmas decorations.

Councillors will consider a future report to detail costs involved, types of decorations available, suitability to current town streetscapes, infrastructure required and other associated matters.

The move was a result of Cr Geoff Neil's request at last week's ordinary council meeting.

New citizens welcomed Macedon Ranges Shire Council welcomed nine new citizens last week in a citizenship ceremony held at Kyneton Town Hall last month.

The new citizens originate from the United Kingdom, India, Taiwan, France, Netherlands, Thailand and Cambodia.

At the ceremony each new citizen received a certificate of Australian citizenship, lapel pin, native plant and an Australian flag.

"When the government and VicFish opened up these areas for this sort of stuff they could have done a half-decent job," he said.

"All the way to the water there's uneven rocks and then boulders at the water's edge!

"Somebody is going to come down here one

day and roll an ankle, or you can imagine with a boat, someone walking backwards, they're going to go arse over tit and smash their head on the rock.

"A lot of fisherman are all saying the same thing - 'oh have you seen the ridiculous launching ramp at Lauriston?'"

Mr Taylor said access to the water at the Upper Coliban Reservoir was far superior and he wondered whether the set up at Lauriston was deliberate.

"The people I've spoken to think it's a deterrent because this is the town water supply and they want to put you off that much that we'll go somewhere else," he said.

"A lot of people in town think you drink it right from the dam!"

Coliban Water's manager of community operations Mick Dunne said access to the reservoirs to include on-water recreation was extended in 2019.

"Since then, we have made a number of onsite improvements," Mr Dunne said.

"We appreciate this feedback from the community about the facilities at the reservoir.

"Our reservoir team will investigate alternatives to the boulders, and install crushed rock to smooth the path for users walking their kayak, canoe, or small portable craft down to the water."

New book is ‘great spooky fun’ Eve Lamb

Campbells Creek writer Lois Murphy describes herself as limelight averse, but with a film production company already optioning the rights to her first published book she may have to get used to being noticed.

Quietly spoken, Murphy works away in a local Castlemaine business when not writing and has now just released her first-ever children's book with her Melbourne-based publisher, Transit Lounge, wasting no time in commissioning a sequel.

"I can't wait to get started," she told the Express last week.

You've Let Them In has been heralded as "great spooky fun" and follows Murphy's debut, Soon, that was aimed at adults and published in Australia, England and the US with the international rights to the book snapped up and an Aussie film company optioning rights to turn it into a screen script.

High-profile reviewers, like author of the famed Verity Sparks series, Susan Green, have now drawn attention to the "unexpected seam of humour" running all the way through her new children's tale You've Let Them In. To give a little taste of what lies within its 247 pages - Scott is in shock when his family moves to a rundown old house on the outskirts of town. The garden is a menacing jungle that refuses to be tamed.

An ancient gnome in its midst supposedly stands guard against lurking secrets much to Scott's disgust and Sally's delight. Then strange and scary things start occurring...

Murphy has a degree in professional writing from Deakin University and admits she loves a laugh.

"It all started with the character of Ian the garden gnome - who is actually an old boss of mine," she says.

Murphy is well travelled and the bulk of her new book was written in Broken Hill before she shifted to the Castlemaine area.

She observes that her current Campbells Creek home is "strangely similar to the one in this book".

"But I don't really like garden gnomes," she reveals.

I am surprised that a Bendigo newspaper, in its travel section last Saturday, promoted travel to Japan, when there are currently around 5000 COVID cases in the country, and only returning Japanese residents are permitted to enter.

In spite of this, the Olympic Games planned for 2020, are now to be held from July 23 to - August 8 of this year in Tokyo.

While this is exciting news for athletes and spectators, The Age newspaper, only a week ago, predicted that these will be the silent games, with stadiums devoid of spectators.

This is not to mention that assuming you can travel to Japan in July, you may be at risk of exposure to radiation, a leftover from the earthquake and tsunami in 2011 that sparked a humanitarian disaster in north-eastern Japan, and initiated one of the worst nuclear accidents at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

The legacy of this tragedy is that 10 years later, parts of Fukushima and its precincts are still radioactive, and over a million tons of highly contaminated water are still slowly being released into the ocean.

Fukushima with its rich, volcanic soil is the food bowl of Japan, and supplies Tokyo with much of its edible food.

The IOC executive board recently declared that it would do all in its power to "protect the health of the athletes and everyone involved, and to support the containment of the COVID-19 virus" but it did not mention anything about the radiation risk.

Two beautiful oaks in Newstead have gone. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the office of our MP Maree Edwards who were helpful and offered many ideas of support to help keep our trees.

The National Trust was unable to help because there is no Significant Tree Register in our shire. Although, from my understanding, this wouldn’t have saved the trees anyway - registered or not.

VCAT was unable to help because there were no building plans/permits in place for the property. This is why the building plans were withdrawn in the first place.

Mount Alexander Council wouldn’t or couldn’t see this for what it was. I don’t know which is worse.

Our council was unable to help because there was nothing they could do. My question is, if council can’t who can?

75 objections were received from our little village - yet we were not heard, nor considered.

We are not allowed to remove trees and vegetation, because they give shelter to animals and provide habitat. Apparently, it is okay to remove trees that shelter humans, for no good reason.

I am sure similar situations have arisen in our shire in the past. Isn’t it time for this issue to be addressed? If only with a Significant Tree Register to keep track of our old trees whether they be a native species or not. Old is old. Or should we wait until our landscapes have disappeared?

It is about time we have a council that will step up to protect our landscapes and communities. If they can’t or won’t, we

need people on council who will.

Lots of people come to our region because of our landscapes. It brings money into our communities, and gives local people jobs.

Destroying our landscapes for no reason is not the way to go to support them.

At what cost?

Pam Reid, Romsey I read with interest that Macedon Ranges Shire Council will consider Christmas decorations for towns across the shire.

Should it fall to local councils to spread the Christmas cheer when there are so many other more pressing things that our rates could be put towards?

There have been some great examples of community Christmas decorations throughout the towns such as the Christmas trees in Romsey, lighting competitions in the East Ward, Lancefield shop and main street decorations and Riddells Creek, and the great community knitted tree in Woodend that added loads of excitement and colour.

Business owners across the shire have also been relatively good at giving off that festive feel.

Yes, of course extra street decorations would be fun - but at what cost?

It's hard to understand where the funding would come from for this and what other projects would lose out as a result... Is it worth it for one month of 'cheer'? And what would a thinly spread budget achieve for towns anyway? One miserable red bow for every 20 light poles?

I hope our council votes sensibly on this one when the time comes.

Maternity services restored

Maternity Services at Castlemaine Health became fully operational as of yesterday.

The two-stage re-opening of the service began on March 22 this year with referrals for pregnancy care.

Birthing services re-opened yesterday for births from 37 weeks gestation up to 42 weeks gestation, in line with the capability of a Level 2 maternity service.

“This is an exciting day for the community,” Castlemaine Health CEO, Sue Race said in a prepared statement.

“The response to the opening of pregnancy care has been wonderful and our team of Midwifery Group Practice midwives have been caring for a diverse group of women and their families.

“As we prepare to welcome the first babies born under the new model we wanted to acknowledge the hard work and dedi-

cation required to honour our commitment to maintain locally based maternity services.

“We believe all women deserve safe, respectful, individualised, evidence-based care,” Ms Race said.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer what is regarded as the gold standard of midwifery-led care, the continuity of care model, where women see the same midwife throughout their pregnancy, labour and birth and early parenting, and to partner with Bendigo Health and our local general practitioner obstetricians.”

Victoria’s acting chief nursing and midwifery officer, Adjunct Professor Tanya Farrell, officially re-opened the local hospital's maternity services at a small event attended by key stakeholders and the service review team.

Due to COVID restrictions this event was only open to a limited number of people.

Students walk for Austin

Kyneton High School students are stepping it up in a full school walk-a-thon in support of ‘Austin’s Wish To Walk’ this week.

They are rallying behind young Austin Vearing who lives with cerebral palsy and has been accepted for major life-changing surgery in the US. Students aim to raise $5000 towards the surgery which will cost about $100,000.

Both Austin’s parents, Kat and Jules Vearing, were long-term teachers at Kyneton High before moving with their family to Castlemaine.

When the school's year 10 Applied Learning students heard about Austin’s cerebral palsy and his upcoming surgery they wanted to help and have organised the walk-a-thon with the Vearings.

Students from years seven to 12 will walk laps of the school oval for an hour through the day, and students in the Applied Learning class will be walking all day.

Beware bikes – new rules now apply Mandatory minimum passing distances for motorists passing cyclists have come into effect.

The updated rule, which came into effect at the beginning of last week, makes it mandatory for motorists to give riders at least one metre clearance when overtaking on roads up to 60km/h, and 1.5 metres on roads with speed limits above 60km/h. These rules clarify the existing guidelines around passing riders and brings Victoria into line with other states.

Last year there was a welcome drop in the number of lives lost on our roads across all user groups – except cyclists, with 13 people losing their lives compared to the five year average of 10 riders dying each year.

“Last year was a horrible year on our road for cyclists – these measures will ensure everyone has a safe place on our roads,” Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll said.

“This new rule provides a clear direction on how much space motorists should give cyclists when passing. We all share the roads and need to look out for one another.”

Under the updated rule, drivers and motorcyclists can briefly cross painted lines to give cyclists the space they need – including solid lines, double lines, painted tram lane lines and painted islands – but only when they have a clear view ahead and it’s safe to do so.

Cyclists need to follow the road rules too – including riding predictably, riding in bike lanes when they are provided and using hand signals to change direction.

Consultation with motoring and bicycling bodies and other key stakeholders to ensure the rule fits into practical, everyday situations has occurred. The law will attract maximum court penalties of up to $1652 and on the spot infringements of $330. Improper overtaking or passing offences incur two demerit points.

Illegal trail bike riding and four-wheel driving is on the rise.

The Conservation Regulator has issued more than 100 infringements for off-road vehicle use by trail bike riders and four-wheeldrivers since January 1.

Riding and driving off-road can cause soil erosion and damage native vegetation. The ecosystems in our forests are fragile and

On Thursday, April 21, 1921, 37 prominent Melbourne citizens, including General Sir John Monash, gathered at Scott’s Hotel in Collins Street, for the inaugural lunch meeting of the newly formed Rotary Club of Melbourne - the first Rotary club in Australasia.

Three more clubs followed that same year; the Rotary clubs of Sydney and the New Zealand clubs of Auckland and Wellington. From there, Rotary, Rotoract and Interact clubs were created across Australia, New Zealand and Oceania heralding a new era of service and fellowship.

In the century that Rotary planted its roots Down Under, it's been 100 years of ‘doing good’ across our regions and across the globe. One hundred years of Service Above Self. One hundred years of action. One hundred years of transforming lives and communities for the greater good.

From 37 members in April 1921 to nearly 33,000 members in 1306 clubs in 2021, Rotary has surpassed many milestones along the way, but perhaps none greater than its growth. In October 1967 the Rotary club of Kyneton was chartered and in the past 54 years has added to making Kyneton and the world a better place.

It's now an appropriate time to say 'congratulations' to Rotary and the wider Rotary family including the hundreds of Kynetonians who have contributed to the organisation and in doing so have helped improved many lives.

In this Midland Express feature, the club wanted to capture some of the highlights for Kyneton Rotary in the past 54 years and give a snapshot of its history. ( Thanks to the publication Rotary Down Under for its permission to use some of its material).

Australia’s first Rotary clubs were chartered in Melbourne and Sydney 100 years ago so this year Rotary clubs throughout the nation are celebrating this important anniversary.

Kyneton Rotary club was chartered in 1967 and over the ensuing 54 years has been involved in a wide variety of projects that contribute to the liveability of Kyneton and surrounds as well as making the world a better place.

One of Kyneton Rotary’s most significant local projects has been the ongoing clean-up of the Campaspe River including the river walk. Rotary’s initiative has led other groups to become involved in enhancing the river precinct.

In recent years Rotary has ploughed thousands of dollars into a wide range of local projects including providing equipment and scout hall security for reestablishing the Kyneton Scout group.

In a move to re-direct the energies of year 12 schoolies' celebrations, groups of year 12 students from Kyneton have travelled to Vietnam volunteering

for humanitarian work at an orphanage.

In another field, Kyneton Rotary funded the building of much needed toilets and water tanks in Kenya.

We currently have 35 members as well as many friends and supporters.

The role and purpose of Rotary is as a service organisation dedicated to providing humanitarian service and advancing goodwill and peace around the world.

Rotarians typically are involved in projects addressing the needs of their local communities as well as projects at national and international level.

Kyneton Rotary club meets weekly each Monday evening from 7pm at the Shamrock Hotel. A group of Rotarians and friends also meet each Friday at 10am for coffee at the Social Foundry.

The club is always on the lookout for new members, both women and men, who support Rotary’s ideals and who wish to become involved with other like minded people to make the world a better place.

After 40 years as a Kyneton Rotarian, local businessman Dennis Perry has recalled some Rotary highlights which have enhanced and continue to enhance Kyneton’s liveability.

Still an enthusiastic Rotarian, Dennis has remembered some of the large and small projects and events instigated and/or supported by Rotary. Some of these events remain but many have disappeared with changing tastes... * The Daffodil Festival continues to be supported by Rotary after 30 plus years of managing up to 80 planter boxes of bulbs which adorned the streets. The daffodil street parade is also well supported. * The UK based TOC H charity supplied emergency lighting to Kyneton Rotary to distribute to seniors in Kyneton. * Lots of fun and wet clothes were generated by the annual Australia Day Raft Race along the Campaspe River. * Post Ash Wednesday clean up on burnt out properties. * An annual Rotary calendar was a valued tool for locals and raised funds for local projects. * Catering at the Kyneton Show which included the stripping and renovation of three food vans which also featured in other Kyneton events. * Support for the scouts annual Jeeba Yackie bonfire and fireworks.

Since then Kyneton Scouts have had a period of recess but in the past

couple of years have begun activities once more and have been supported

by Rotary with camping gear and security features at its riverside scout hall. * When fun runs were popular, Kyneton Rotary organised and marshalled events for around 13 years. * The still operating information centre at the town’s entrance was financed and built by Rotary along with the adjacent barbecue shelter and playground train. * International Youth Exchange has been an important program at Kyneton Rotary with the club-to-club three months exchange with New Zealand’s Motueka Rotary club rated as one of the most successful. * Rotary cooked and distributed 4000 sausages as part of the celebration party at the opening of the Calder Freeway Kyneton bypass. * The entertaining Rotary Music Halls revealed some hidden talents and generated the formation of the Kyneton Rotary Choir * A major and continuing riverside clean up which involved the laying of concrete pathways as part of the NEAT program which helped the unemployed. * Fashion parades, spelling bees, country music festivals, theatre visits to Melbourne, weekends away and managing the parking at the Kyneton Cup have all been part of the Rotary calendar.

ROTARY IN AUSTRALIA HITS

Nominated and supported by the Rotary Club of Kyneton, John Wigley became the club’s highest ranked member when he became District Governor for Rotary District 9800 in 2005-2006.

John joined the Rotary Club of Brighton North in 1985 before moving to Kyneton in1996, and has held many executive positions in the district including that of district governor.

An intense few days of training in Anaheim, California, in January 2005 prepared John and his wife Fran and DG nominees from throughout the world for the upcoming Rotary year. They also attended the Rotary International Conference in Chicago in that year which celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Rotary International.

These experiences prepared John to lead Rotary District 9800 through a very busy and exciting year. John and Fran visited the 72 clubs in a strip of country running from Brighton in the south to Echuca-Moama in the north at least once during his year of office.

The Commonwealth Games were held in Melbourne in March 2006, in Rotary District 9800, and as DG John was offered the cleaning contract for the Games Village. Over $700,000 was raised by Rotary Clubs and community groups as a result of this rather different fundraising opportunity.

A highlight for the year was the Annual District Conference in Geelong hosted by RC Kyneton in March 2006. The musical theme featured Kyneton's own Rotary choir, and a keynote speaker was Mao’s Last Dancer, Li Cunxin, who is now artistic director of the Queensland Ballet.

Another highlight was when clubs from the district during this time donated a truckload of pencils together with heaps of exercise books, erasers and pencil sharpeners which were collected at the conference for the Pencils for East Timor Project.

As well as DG for Rotary 9800 from Kyneton, Ronda Walker of Kyneton was Zonta District 23 DG during the same period. A District Governor’s Ball was held in the Kyneton Town Hall to celebrate this unique contribution by Kyneton.

A Rotarian of the highest rank

Supporting far and wide 10 percent of cases fatal. If polio is not fully eradicated, around 200,000 children could be paralysed annually.

By the time the world is certified polio free, Rotary’s contribution will exceed $US2.2 billion including $1 billion in matching funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which contributes $2 (capped at $50 million a year) for every dollar provided by Rotary.

Polio spreads through contaminated water and food. Kyneton Rotary has been active in providing funds and more recently in providing African countries with the ability to build water tanks to collect and deliver hygienic water supplies.

The PolioPlus program is just one of hundreds of relief programs Rotary supports within Australia and throughout the world.

Hazmat help From far away to close to home, Kyneton Rotary funded the specially equipped Hazmat trailer at Kyneton CFA where it stands ready to clean up potentially dangerous toxic spills.

Sing out loud The Kyneton Rotary Choir has been a welcome addition to many Kyneton events, especially at Christmas and at important Rotary occasions. The choir was founded by Rotarian and music academic Jim Ogden and Mary Potton is now the music director. Rotarians Dennis Perry and Arnold Jenkins have been major supporters of the choir.

Kyneton Rotary has been, and still is, involved in many local, national and international projects. Here are just some of them...

Out in Africa During the past few years the Rotary Club of Kyneton has worked with Learn to Live, an NGO based in New Orleans and founded by Yanti Turang who was born and bred in Kyneton, to provide clean water and sanitation in the Rift Valley in Kenya. Together the organisations have helped some Maasai women with the construction of rainwater tanks and most recently some much needed latrines at the Olodungoro Primary School in Kajiado County, Kenya. The projects were funded

by Learn to Live, the Rotary Foundation and the Rotary Club of Kyneton and were managed by MANDO, a Nairobi based Maasai organisation.

Despite holdups due to the COVID pandemic and the invasion of an elephant herd the latrines are now complete.

Polio eradication continues One of Rotary’s most significant disease eradication programs has resulted in 400 million children a year being vaccinated against polio saving an estimated 200,000 lives annually.

Since 1988, the Rotary generated PolioPlus program has reduced the number of polio endemic countries from 125 to three.

Gardens designed to delight The Rotary Club of Kyneton is again hosting the Garden Design Fest in the Macedon Ranges this coming spring. The event was postponed from last year due to COVID restrictions and will be across the weekend of Saturday November 20 and Sunday November 21. The gardens that will be available for viewing include some

in Kyneton, Tylden and Gisborne.

One of the gardens, Verdicus, was exhibited in Open Gardens Victoria in 2019 and proved very popular.

It is a stunning garden set in nine acres and is not to be missed.

Another garden has featured on the ABC’s Dream Gardens program and is an excellent example of garden design in a smaller space.

The Garden Design Fest showcases professionally designed gardens and takes place over two weekends, one in Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsular and the following weekend in regional areas including the Macedon Ranges.

It is organised by the Rotary Clubs of Brighton North, Melbourne Central and Kew. Regional clubs including the Rotary Club of Kyneton, host gardens in their areas.

The main charity to benefit this year is Youth Suicide awareness, a program run by the Rotary Club of Brighton North. Regional charities and organisations will also benefit from the funds raised by the Rotary Clubs in those areas.

Major upgrades to Sidonia Road are expected to give farmers a smoother journey from their farm gate to market.

Minister for Agriculture and local MP Mary-Anne Thomas announced $480,000 for Macedon Ranges Shire Council to upgrade the Kyneton road last week through the state's AgriLinks program.

Works will widen and reconstruct the road so it can better cater for heavy vehicles that regularly use it to transport beef, wool and other farm produce. New barriers and better drainage will also be installed on Sidonia Road to boost safety.

“Improving the roads and infrastructure used by farmers and producers will help them grow their businesses by reaching more customers more quickly, contributing to the overall growth of the sector," Ms Thomas said.

Macedon Ranges Council will contribute $65,000 towards the project. Mayor Cr Jennifer Anderson said the state funding was

great news for the agricultural community who regularly used Sidonia Road to transport beef, wool and other produce.

“Supporting local farmers and producers through road and infrastructure upgrades allows them to focus on the important things – running and growing their businesses," she said.

"The ability for farm vehicles and equipment to travel easily and safely on our roads is important. Not only will this upgrade support day to day operations for our farmers, but make it safer for their kids – our next generation of producers – who catch the school bus along Sidonia Road.”

The Sidonia Road project is one of 48 local road, intersection and bridge infrastructure works supported through the AgriLinks program.

The road improvements are expected to increase productivity and reduce travel times, which will better connect country roads to major transport routes.

Mount Alexander Shire Council is offering a range of workshops for the local business community aimed at helping people develop practical tools for managing their mental health.

The program is called Mindfit at Work and comprises seven sessions held monthly from May to November.

Each explore a different aspect of mental health and wellbeing.

Distance is his go Bill West

Maldon-trained galloper Oak Bridge broke his maiden status at his fifth race start last week, and connections ae confident he will go on to better things.

Trained by Brian and Ashley McKnight, Oak Bridge started at outsider odds of $25 and led almost all the way to win a Ballarat Maiden over 1600m.

The McKnights were confident the three-year-old would be much more suited by the distance, and he bowled along in front under an astute pace set by regular rider Christine Puls.

Puls has put in plenty of work with Oak Bridge, and said he certainly looks well suited to racing over further distances in the future.

“He never looked like getting beat,” the experienced jockey said after Oak Bridge had run to the line strongly to hold off outsider Miles Ahead and odds-on favourite

Uniquely.

Co-trainer Ashley McKnight said “two thousand metres should not be a problem” and it is hoped the gelding may develop into a very handy middle distance galloper.

He said Newcastle-based owner Tom Shearer was very keen on the yearling galloper by Night of Thunder from Our Oak when he was listed at the Melbourne Gold Sales, and purchased him for $25,000.

Night of Thunder is a Darley shuttle stallion who spent just one season at Northwood Park in Australia, producing 58 foals.

“Oak Bridge has a staying pedigree which goes back to France,” McKnight said.

The McKnights operate a longestablished breeding and training complex on over 400 acres off the Maldon-Bridgewater Road.

Oak Bridge’s strapper Victoria Talbot, from Inglewood, was really excited about the success at Ballarat.

Bendigo winner

Sutton Grange trainer Brent Stanley was back in the winner’s circle at Bendigo on Sunday.

Dallas Cowgirl started an odds-on favourite in a 1400m Maiden for three-year-olds, and lived up to punters’ confidence.

Ridden by Joe Bowditch, Dallas Cowgirl previously finished a good second over 1200m at Echuca.

Sunday’s success came at the filly’s fourth race start.

Ranges wins top honours For the first time, Macedon Ranges Basketball Association’s Under 14 Boys’ squad took out division one at the Basketball Victoria Country Championships last month.

The squad took top honours winning 10 games straight over three days at the round robin tournament in Traralgon. As a result they are now the top-ranked country basketball team for their age group in Victoria.

MRBA president John Gehman acknowledged “the huge effort from the boys for going 10 for 10 against the best from much bigger associations like Geelong, Bendigo, Warrnambool and Ballarat”.

Head coach John Maxwell from Gisborne said their main focus was their defensive intensity.

"From game one we were able to maintain a very high standard, which is a credit to the team’s depth and fitness,” he said.

The Macedon Ranges Under 14 squad with their division one Country Championship medals.

The MRBA squad is a true representation of quality basketball from across the shire with coaches and players being drawn from across the Macedon Ranges.

For taking out division one at the Country

Championships, the MRBA squad also gains automatic entry to the National Junior Classic in September, where it will take on the best metropolitan and country teams from across Australia.

Romsey Romsey Golf Club’s 2021 championships began on Saturday, with life member Peter Scanlon turning out for his 63rd consecutive championship.

Equally at home on the golf course or in the paddocks on his Springfield farm, Scanlon appreciated the almost perfect conditions, along with other participants.

Players hit some remarkable

shots to make par; golf being such a wonderful game a birdie was often followed by an unwanted double or triple bogey.

Four intrepid Romsey players headed to the Alexandra open tournament on Thursday. There was fod, below three degree tem-

peratures, and fog, which did not lift until the halfway mark.

Sandy Wicking (Kilmore) was the scratch winner with an 86, with Beryl Cole the best of the Romsey contingent with a nett 74.

Romsey played Lancefield in the first round of DDGA women’s pennant at Euroa last week.

There were plenty of clutch putts and saving chips, and eventually a tie resulted (two wins and a half each) the same as in the Trentham v Broadford match.

Trentham Perfect autumn conditions were welcomed by Trentham monthly medal participants on Saturday, though many did not return the scores they anticipated.

The best round was 84-17-67 from Goonawarra visitor Tony Hendy, with B-grade runner-up Brad Duncan taking home the medal with a nett 68.

A-grade went to Alan Hopkins 77-9-68, and Doyle Detrell topped C-grade with 96-28-68.

Women’s stableford: Julie Hanson took out A-grde with 37 points, and Alex. Evered shone with 40 points in B-grade.

Magpies valiant in def defeat feat

Castlemaine Football Netball Club played host to the Kyneton Tigers at Camp Reserve last Saturday in round four of the Bendigo Football Netball League.

The Magpies were determined to get their first win on the board, while the Tigers were chasing their second victory of the year after accounting for Kangaroo Flat in round two and a close call against South Bendigo in round three which saw them fall 10 points short.

The Tigers pounced on the Magpies in the first term kicking five unanswered goals, with the home side only able to manage a point. However, the Magpie defence worked hard to force a number of errors, which saw some of Kyneton's chances go begging.

In the second term the Magpies lifted their intensity outclassing the Tigers with five goals to one. Stalwart John Watson kicking three and new recruit Liam Wilkinson two.

At half time the Magpies had fought their way back to within 10 points.

A battle royale continued in the third term with Castlemaine kicking another three through Riley Pedretti, Klai Jermyn and Hadley Bassett to Kyneton's four to still be within striking distance trailing by 21 points at the final change.

Another even quarter saw Castlemaine kick two goals to the Tiger's two but unfortunately the Magpies just couldn't bridge the gap and went down by 30 points.

Kyneton 13.24 (102) to Castlemaine 11.6 (72).

In the Reserves Kyneton proved a dominant force winning by 131 points. Best for the Magpies in a tough contest were Z. Doherty, L. Pritchard, K. Gellatly, L. Hyland, N. O'Brien and D. Greenham.

The Under 18s was a closer affair with the Tigers eventually getting up by 45 points. The Magpies started well but a goalless second term saw the Tigers gain the ascendency and Castlemaine were unable to break back into the match.

Best for the Magpies were J. Denahy with three goals, O. Demaria-O.Sullivan and A. Keogh with a goal apiece, C. Kays, E. Maltby and E. Hein.

NETBALL On the netball court Kyneton 91 d Castlemaine 16 in A Reserve, in B Grade it was a closer contest with Kyneton 42 defeating a determined Castlemaine 20. In B Reserve Castlemaine 40 were unlucky to fall one goal short of a draw against Kyneton 41 and in 17 & Under Kyneton 50 defeated Castlemaine 23 despite a top effort.

Gisborne put on back foot Clean sweep for Tigers

Gisborne senior footballers were put on the back foot early on Saturday by a South Bendigo side riding a wave of confidence after three successive wins.

The home side were ‘on’ in the first term, and their quick disposal and play-on football had Gisborne battling to rein them in.

Catch-up footy was never enough as South forced numerous turnovers by hand and foot.

The home side eventually won easily, 16.7 (103) to 11.12 (72).

Back at Gardiner Reserve this Saturday, the Bullodgs will be looking for a percentage booster against Castlemaine.

Gisborne Reserves showed plenty of determination and spirit in what was a rather physical encounter.

The injury toll mounted in the first half, and at the last change some positional changes were made and it was a case of hanging on.

Eventually, a courageous 8.11 to 6.4 victory.

Best players were T. Fraser, J. Keeping, S. Merrett, L. Shore, S. Bell Bartels, and L. Webber (three goals).

The Under 18s ran rampant against a very undermanned South side that had to be bolstered by the addition of five Gisborne – special thanks to Harry Sloss, Max Dean, Ryder Blizzard, Tom Grinter and Noah Ozanne for assisting South and testing their teammates.

The final tally of 30.11 to 1.0 did not indicate the nature of the game.

Best players for Gisborne were L. Ellings, C. Flynn, M. Martucci, J. Fox, J. Bannam and L. Phelan.

NETBALL POWER Gisborne’s A-grade netball side showed finesse and power to take control early.

Despite a fightback which cut the margin to three goals in the last term, Gisborne rallied for an important 48-40 victory.

The Bulldogs welcomed tall and talented Claire Vearing into the goaling circle, and her 93 per cent accuracy put the opposition under immense pressure.

Both Reserves sides were trying to stay in the top four, and a see saw struggle eventuated.

The home side led by three goals at the last change, but a renewed and determined presence by the Bulldogs resulted in a 4944 margin.

Gisborne’s B grade side made it four wins in a row, maintaining accurate goaling and ball handling for the whole four quarters.

Eventually the final margin was eight goals, and this has enabled Gisborne to replace Sandhurst on top of the ladder.

Gisborne;s B Reserve side won its first match of the season, beating the Bloods 58-50.

“We were determined to lay four strong quarters of netball and with each quarter, the team grew more confident,” coach Sharon Parfrey said. The momentum must continue against Castlemaine.

After three straight wins, Gisborne’s 17&U jumped to a 13-goal lead by quarter time. The versatility and talent across the court was evident, with defensive pressure maintained and forced errors capitalised on.

The 62-40 victory was well earnt in a bid to grab top spot on the ladder.

At the after match conclusions South representatives were very complimentary of the Gisborne club, praising players across all grades of football and netball. Their hospitality was excellent.

At Camp Reserve in Castlemaine the old rivals squared off in the senior football match, with the home side showing recent heavy defeats had not dampened their spirit.

In a very competitive game the Magpies were outplayed by the Tigers in the first quarter, then piled on six goals to trail by just 10 points at the break.

The Tigers’ inaccuracy was frustrating, 37 scoring shots to 17, with the final margin 30 points.

NETBALL THRILLER The B-Reserve netball match was a thriller, with Kyneton losing some momentum after a player was injured and sidelined.

The team worked hard under pressure, and held their nerve in the final five minutes to prevail 41-40 over Castlemaine. Kirsty Draper was best on court.

Kyneton B-graders defended strong, with intercepts and turnovers converted.

Some set players were used to advantage.

Best on court in the 42-20 win over Castlemaine went to Tahlia Wallace for her defensive efforts.

The U17s played cohesively and deserved their 50-23 margin against the Magpies.

Lauren was the incentive winner and Stella also had a fine game in wing defence. Baylee and Charlie combined superbly in the scoring circle.

KFNC hosted their first-ever FIDA league round with the Tigers taking on Bendigo Suns in a hard-fought fourquarter battle.

The visitors won 13.9 (87) to 5.2 (32), with the Tigers gaining several new players recently, and building on their skills and fitness.

Best for Kyneton were Dion, Jason, Billie, Zander and Ross.

Gisborne Football Netball Club’s women’s football team remains unbeaten after a convincing 54 points win over Tullamarine at the weekend.

The Bulldogs played a skilful brand of football, and had a match winner in Natalie Dowdy who kicked eight goals in the final tally of 10.6 (66). D. Mills and B. Collings also chipped in with goals.

Trentham senior footballers sent a strong to other teams in the MCDFL with an impressive 83 points victory over a well-fancied Maldon combination on Saturday.

The 20.12 (132) to 8.1 (49) victory sets the stage for a blockbuster match with the Saints at home to undefeated Carisbrook this Saturday.

The trip to Maldon held few fears for the Saints, coming off a big win over Natte Bealiba.

The ability to win the ball around to ground and put it to advantage going forward proved too much for Maldon, with eight different goal kickers for the Saints.

Jake Keogh led the way with five, Cooper Webber-Mirkin kicked four to take his tally to 16 from three matches, and J. Cowan and A. Ferrier managed three apiece, with Dovaston two, and R. Matricardi, D. Holden and L. Bruton also on the scoreboard.

Best players were Dovaston, Cowan, Ferrier, Holden, Gervasoni and Matricardi.

With several players absent the Saints’ Reserves were no match for a strong Maldon side that prevailed 11.5 (71) to 7.8 (50).

After a sluggish opening, Trentham out-

scored the opposition after quarter time, but the damage had been done.

Goal kickers were B. Cole 2, M. Law, Q. Kinnell, D. Meade-Sweet, M. Quarrier and M. Steen, with Nadin, Cole, Luke Saidm Cutler, Meade-Sweet and Smith listed as best.

The Saints’ junior sides battled, apart from the U11s who had an exciting win.

FIRST VICTORY Trentham’s A-grade netballers had their first win for the season, taking control in the second half for a confidence boosting 58-37 outcome.

It was a fine team effort, with Sharna Ford named best on court for her display in the goal ring. Hayley Bourke and Chelsea Martin were again prominent.

The other netball teams lowered their colours, though B-grade coach Sharna Ford was impressed with the efforts of Sharni Stone, Joss West and Ellie Tourney in the 46-21 defeat.

The C-graders had a close game, down 23-27, with Tahlia Bickerdyke and Merryn Thompson named best.

A big crowd is anticipated for what should be good contests against Carisbrook in both football and netball.

Tough task for Steaders

Newstead faced a challenging task making the trek across the Mooloort Plains to tackle Carisbrook in round three of the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League competition last Saturday.

The Redbacks made a strong start in the opening term kicking 4.5 to the Steaders' 1.2 for the term and were never headed going on to win by 104 points despite the Roos' best efforts.

Newstead was very well served by Matthew Manning, Matthew Lorenz and Oscar Lynzaat who battled hard all day but in the end the side just couldn't convert their opportunities on the scoreboard.

Goal kickers for Newstead were O. Lynzaat 2, M. Checkley, M. Ramsey, D. Stevens, N. Webster, Z. Ashby and J. Smith.

Best were A. Robins, D. Stevens, C. McKendry, O. Lynzaat, M. Lorenz, M. Manning.

The Harcourt FNC sides enjoyed a week's rest due to the bye.

The Maldon Reserves had a better day of it defeating Trentham 11.5 (71) to Trentham 7.8 (50).

The Newstead Reserves had a tough battle against their Redback counterparts going down by 54 points. Carisbrook 9.15 (69) to Newstead 1.9 (15).

Tim Robinson was among the best for the Steaders' posting a goal in the second term, other top contributors were B. Pedretti, R. Tingay, W. Penrose, S. Shovan and C. Davies.

The Maldon Under 17.5s also had a convincing win over the young Saints 22.16 (148) to Trentham 1. 4 (10). Maldon's goal kickers included M. Smolak 7, J. Rewell 4, D. Ross, B. Miller 3, A. Peace 2, N. Webb, C. Buchanan and T. Brereton.

The Newstead Under 17.5s went down to a dominate Redbacks by 114 points.

Shining lights for the Roos were O. Daldy, M. Schembri, N Codognotto, C Baker, L. Chapman and T. Green.

Maldon's Under 14.5s had a massive win over Trentham, while the Under 11.5s went down to Saints in a close battle.

Newstead's Under 14.5s and Under 11.5s went down to confident Carisbrook outfits but continue to show improvement with every week.

Harcourt's Under 14.5s lost to Maryborough Rovers in a tight contest. Harcourt's Under 11.5s side had the bye.

Kyneton's Under 14s footballers had a massive 95-point win over Maryborough on the weekend.

Bill West History was made when the first round of the Riddell League’s Female Football competition (Junior and Youth Girls’ sections) took place on Sunday.

The first-ever Macedon girls’ team played against Woodend at Gilbert Gordon Oval in the Youth section (Under 18 years).

Woodend has previously had a girls’ team in the AFL Goldfields competition in 2019, but COVID-19 put this into recess last year.

“We only had about 10 girls available a couple of weeks ago, but we rallied and it’s great to see a Macedon team out there,” coach Tamara Collins said.

Clean sweep in netball

Lancefield received a real confidence boost by winning all four matches against Romsey in the third round of RDFNL netball on Saturday.

The A-grade match was closely fought, with the Tigers home by five goals.

Riddell made a strong statement by accounting for Diggers Rest by four goals, and Woodend-Hesket A-graders scored a strong win against Melton Centrals.

Wallan looks to be a powerhouse, and the match of the fourth round in the top grade appears to be the Macedon versus Wallan, with the Cats looking to bounce back from their one-goal loss to Diggers Rest on Anzac Day. Saturday’s grade scores: A: Woodend-Hesket 49 d Melton Centrals 35, Lancefield 35 d Romsey 30, Riddell 39 d Diggers Rest 35, Wallan 49 d Western Rams 39, Macedon a bye.

Woodend Youth girls’ coach Anthony Woodcock was pleased the club could field two sides on Sunday – the Junior Woodend team defeated the new Lancefield girls’ side 12.5 to 0.2, with Daisy Keniry kicking six goals.. This is basically an under 15 years’ comp.

The Riddell League is confident the number of Female Football teams under its control will grow in the future, with season 2021 a trailblazer.

There was plenty of excitement at Gilbert Gordon Oval as the two teams ran out with plenty of support from the sidelines.

After an evenly contested first half, with Macedon kicking three goals straight to Woodend’s 1.5, the home side took control and rattled on five goals in a dominating

third term.

Lacking interchange players, Macedon understandably began to tire, and Woodend went on to win by 19 points.

Girls team ready to fire Bill West

Lancefield’s first girls’ football team already has an excess of players and heaps of enthusiasm, as evident at last Thursday night’s training session attended by two of the stars from the Melbourne AFLW team.

Shelley Scott, Melbourne’s 2020 best and fairest winner, and All-Australian and runner-up best and fairest Lauren Pearce were given an enthusiastic welcome at Tigerland.

Scott drove from two and a half hours from near Colac where she enjoys farm life, and with Pearce who has a strong basketballing background and is a mobile ruck player, went through various skill drills with the local girls and answered plenty of questions about the pathway.

Kicking skills were emphasised, and Lancefield Junior Football Club president Bill Balcam and girls’ footy coordinator Jacqui Green were pleased to welcome the AFLW stars.

Green lives in Lancefield and was girls’ footy coordinator with Gisborne Rookies for the past three seasons.

The girls will be playing in the Junior Girls’ section (14.5 years and under), and Balcam hopes the Tigers will be able

The Riddell League will also have a Youth Section for female players aged from 14.5 to 18 years this season.

Having a very experienced and knowledgeable coach is another plus for the Tigers as they introduce a new dynamic to the club.

The club is excited about being able to cater for female football; some of the girls involved in training have played other sports, some just like the challenge of being able to take part in football.

The neighbouring Romsey club is not fielding a female team this season.

Redbacks too good for improved Tigers

Romsey soon kicked a couple of quick goals, but the Tigers replied with good team football.

With nine points separating the sides, an old-fashioned dust-up erupted near the boundary line not far from the Romsey coaching box. About half the players on the ground were involved, and spectators had their say as well before order was restored.

On resumption, Romsey settled better and finished up with a match winning eight goals to one for the quarter.

Unfazed, the Tigers regrouped after the long break and kicked four goals in the third term.

Jedwab continued to win the ball with space to move in, and Romsey’s accuracy from the match at Woodend continued.

The last term was five goals to three in favour of the home side, with Redbacks’ supporters already thinking about the pending clash with Riddell.

HAWKS BOUNCE BACK Woodend-Hesket regrouped after their big defeat and finished up with a solid win at Melton Centrals, much to the relief of coach Ben Tankard and supporters.

It was a match the Hawks had to win, and they took control in the second half. Centrals, hit hard by injuries, faded out and the Hawks have the bye this weekend to reflect on how they are travelling after four rounds.

Top recruit Wayne Patek turned in a big game for the Hawks, who have a strong list of players to choose from.

A positive in Riddell’s convincing victory over Diggers Rest was the form of ruckman Josh Grabham, recruited from Gisborne.

Losses to Macedon and Riddell is not what the highly rated Diggers Rest expected.

Romsey’s pressure and better ball usage eventually proved too much for an improving Lancefield on Saturday, but the Redbacks face a much tougher test at home to Riddell this weekend.

Livewire key forward Jack Jedwab was a constant threat to the Tigers’ defenders, and his mobility, strong marking and long kicking produced eight goals for Romsey.

After a low-scoring arm wrestle with Diggers Rest for three quarters, finals-bound Riddell broke the shackles with an impressive last-term scoring spree of seven goals.

Lancefield, despite going down by 68 points, showed enough to be confident of chalking up a victory over Western Rams (formerly Rockbank) this Saturday. The Rams failed to score against a rampant Wallan, with the Magpies now early flag favourites. They head for Macedon in another key fourth round contest.

Significantly, Lancefield Reserves scored a big win over Romsey, much to the delight of Reserves’ coach Andrew Richardt and loyal supporters.

Unlike in 2019, the Tigers have sufficient numbers to choose from this season, with a strong contingent of Melbourne-based players fitting into the senior lineup.

Lancefield’s senior playing coach Tom Waters said immediately after the game he was disappointed with the defeat, but optimistic about the future.

“We’ll get there. There’s a lot to work on,” Waters said.

Looking towards a new direction Bill West The 10th anniversary of Pink Sports Day at Romsey Football Netball Club was celebrated on Saturday.

The Pinkateers, a very dedicated band of ladies, have now raised around $150,000 collectively to assist the work of Breast Cancer Network Australia.

Pink Sports Day at Romsey has been one of the major annual community charitable fundraisers in the Macedon Ranges, but it could be heading in a new direction.

“It’s been a big effort and commitment,” Pinkateers coordinator Hope Evans said as Saturday’s enjoyable function wound down in the magnificently decorated main pavilion.

“Moving forward, we may target another worthwhile charitable cause, perhaps in the men’s health field,” she said.

The Pinkateers again thank the donors and supporters and the community at large for getting behind Pink Day. This year’s function had to be scaled down in numbers because of COVID regulations, with a ceiling of 80 attendees in place.

The ladies’ luncheon and charity auction were staged over a period of about three hours, as the Romsey versus Lancefield football and netball matches continued on the adjacent oval and courts.

There were two guest speakers, local breast cancer survivor Vicki Morrison, and Tony Hanegraaf.

Vicki spoke about her battles with breast cancer, and Mr Hanegraaf reflected on the loss of family friend Rebecca Harrison, a community orientated lady who eventually succumbed to the killer disease.
