The operations are expected to run from July to November 2021.

HVP Plantations Western Region general manager Sharon Occhipinti said the organisation's mission was to manage its plantation estate in a safe and sustainable way.

The pilot will also help evaluate whether this sort of community bus service may suffice to meet ongoing calls for local access to a contemporary community aquatic centre - or whether the construction of such a centre much closer to home may ultimately prove better justified.

"Do we need an aquatic facility in our shire or can we take advantage of a nearby aquatic facility?" Mr Fuzzard posed the question that's also being examined as part of the pilot.

"You don't get an aquatic facility for less than $20 million.

"But it's not just about economy. It's got to be a genuinely satisfactory outcome for the community," he said.

Driver dies after crash

A man has died in hospital following a single-vehicle crash at Newstead on Friday July 16. Police have been told a Mitsubishi Verada sedan was travelling east along the Pyrenees Highway when the driver lost control of the vehicle, clipped a power pole and crashed about 4.15pm.

The driver and sole occupant of the car, a 77-year-old man from Wheatsheaf, was taken to Bendigo Hospital where he later died.

"There's a large number of people in this shire who feel disconnected, whether it's through disability or their age," Ms Edwards said.

"I think COVID has exposed just how challenging it can be, particularly for older people who might be living alone, to get out to engage with healthy physical activity."

Mr Carroll said the pilot offered a leading example with potential to travel well beyond Mount Alexander.

"For every dollar invested we know that buses return $5 to the community," the minister said.

The official launch of a new community minibus in Castlemaine late last week was not just about the bus.

It was as much about the destination.

State public transport minister Ben Carroll and Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards were on site in front of Castlemaine old town hall on Thursday as Mount Alexander Shire Council publicly unveiled its new new wheelchair-accessible 11-seat community wellbeing bus that's set to play a key role in a trial with some significant implications for local residents.

Made possible with $123,000 in state funding and $32,000 from the council coffers, the community wellbeing bus pilot will now investigate the merits of providing year-round access to Kangaroo Flat's Gurri Wanyarra Wellbeing Centre and all the aquatic, leisure and wellness programs it offers.

These include access to a 50-metre, eight-lane heated pool, warm water pool, cycling studio, group fitness classes, fully equipped 560-square-metre health club, personal training, cafe, spa, sauna and steam room...

Under the community wellbeing bus trial eligible residents who are otherwise unable to access a car or public transport will be able to take the wellbeing bus to the Gurri Wanyarra centre, with connections to other wellbeing centres in Kyneton and Maryborough also expected to be explored in the future.

But Mount Alexander chief executive Darren Fuzzard told the Midland Express that the trial was not just about providing access to a convenient set of wheels for locals who would otherwise struggle to avail themselves of these health and wellbeing services.

He returned home with his partner and two young children in 2018, and now lives just outside Wallan. His first taste of politics came as the Liberal candidate for the seat of Jagajaga in 2019.

Mr Welch’s candidacy for McEwen follows Phillip Fusco in 2019.

The McEwen electorate takes in most of the Macedon Ranges with new inclusions Woodend, Woodend North, Newham and Ashbourne at its western boundary. It also takes in parts of Mitchell, Whittlesea and Nillumbik shires.

Proud mum Kerri said there were tears and excitement as her family watched the event unfold from their lounge room in Point Lonsdale.

"We're the sort of parents who pace up and down the side of the rowing course, and that was incredibly difficult in the lounge room," Kerri told the Express.

"The tension in the house in the morning was incredible.

"We were watching them and they were sitting back there in fifth and then they crept up into fourth and you could see them working hard.

"Ria's in the bow and makes all the calls and I could see her yelling her lungs out and rowing her hardest and then when the Germans blew up they were just there, and she just called it as though her life depended on it.

"The plan was to just run a clean race and they were rowing very carefully and cleanly and that technique worked really well for them in the end. Her brother was in tears, we were all in tears."

Thompson grew up in Woodend as a very athletic all-

rounder. Talented in cross country running, little athletics and basketball, rowing had never been on the radar for the country town kid.

That all changed when she reached secondary school and went to Lowther Hall in Essendon.

"They had a small rowing program, and she came to us in year seven wanting to take up rowing and we thought 'how's this going to work?!" Kerri said.

"She rowed through school and had some success and by the time she was in year 12 she started rowing with the Melbourne Rowing Club and that year she won Head of the Schoolgirls Regatta, the biggest rowing event for schoolgirls in Victoria."

Thompson first entered international competition in 2018 as a member of Rowing Australia's National Training Centre.

She made the U23 Women's Double Scull for the Junior World Championship and finished fifth in the medal race.

The following year, she was the 2019 World Rowing U23 Champion in the Women's Single Scull.

At the 2021 Final Olympic Qualification Regatta, Thompson and her crewmates ensured the participation of the Women's Quadruple Scull in Tokyo, with the four earning gold in the final to secure an Olympic berth.

"She was overwhelmed with the whole thing - as were we - because it was not expected at all," Kerri said.

"They had to come through and qualify in Switzerland and then come back and spend two weeks in quarantine.

"They went in as underdogs."

Kerri said her daughter would likely take a long break and give her body a rest when she returned home.

"The first thing she's got to do after hotel quarantine is compete with her boyfriend in the Coastal Rowing Championships and then settle down and continue studying medicine at university," Kerri said.

"She will continue rowing and maybe have a tilt at the Paris Olympics in 2024."

Plenty of old schoolmates from Thompson's days in Woodend were thrilled to hear of her bronze medal performance ... just another example of what someone from a small country town can achieve.

Recyclables role in roads ‘blitz’ Eve Lamb

Recycled products ranging from defunct tyres to discarded glass bottles are finding increasing application in the state's road surfacing and maintenance works with a Castlemaine business already playing an important role.

Visiting Castlemaine last Thursday, Victoria's public transport minister Ben Carroll confirmed maintenance crews had spent more than 5000 hours responding to emergency road-related callouts statewide since September, as part of a road maintenance blitz.

This included filling more than 230,000 potholes and rebuilding, repairing or resurfacing more than 2430 kilometres of the state's road network.

In town to publicise the completion of what was being termed a "massive seasonal road maintenance blitz", the minister said recycled products were having an increasing role to play.

"We are now trialing on the Hume Highway a lot more environmentally sound resurfacing product and we think this is very much a part of the future that we have more sustainable road-surfacing product that goes into our resurfacing," he said.

"We are seeing some really good early results from the test of that new product.

"We are rolling out a program of recyclable materials on our road network.

"We're also rolling out more recyclable materials on our sound walls as well.

"It's an important program in the early stages but it's something we're very much wanting to get behind in partnership with local companies, with the private sector," Mr Carroll said.

The minister was speaking at the Castlemaine site of Centre State Asphalting, which used significant quantities of recycled tyres, glass bottles and even

old pavement in making the asphalting it provided to help meet the state's extensive road surfacing needs during the latest season of road maintenance up to the end of June.

Centre State played a vital role in helping deliver the works that included some 1800 kilometres of road repairs, resurfacing and rebuilding in regional Victoria alone.

"We provided 75,000 odd tonnes of asphalting for the season," the company's general manager John Bell-Andrews told the Midland Express as Mr Carroll and Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards, paid Centre State's site a visit on Thursday.

Centre State Asphalting had clinched two state government tenders worth about $15 million all up to provide asphalting in the state's western region and its northern region - which encompasses the Mount Alexander Shire area - during the newly completed maintenance season.

Mr Bell-Andrews said winning the tenders had enabled the company to put on an additional 30 to 40 employees for the duration of the contracts - on top of its existing permanent workforce of 26 staff - across several sites that also included Carisbrook.

"About 5000 tonnes of asphalting would have gone to the Calder Freeway in those months, and in the McIvor Highway alone we would have used about 2000 crumbed tyres and about 10,000 recycled bottles," he said.

Mr Bell-Andrews said recycled glass was able to be used in the asphalting mix in place of sand, which was an increasingly scarce resource, with crumbed tyres used to create a superior road-surfacing product, and recycled pavement another product that was now increasingly being used in the creation of new road asphalting.

"I think there's scope to put more of these materials into roads, most definitely. I think we can grow that."

Road reopens

Even a small setback won’t deter the Woodend Winter Arts Festival from this weekend’s performances.

With the past few weeks being rather tumultuous, anyone would forgive the festival crew if they decided to pack their bags and go home!

But, not to be beaten, the committee has vowed to bring the program to Woodend and cope with any changes in a flexible, responsible manner.

It’s with this thought in mind that one event planned for this weekend of August 7-8 will now have to be postponed by a few weeks. All other events will happen as planned, but the film and harmonic singing of A Little Bit Mongolian will be pushed out and rescheduled once rules around singing are eased.

“It’s a bit of a blow, but we are determined to proceed,” artistic director Jacqueline Ogeil said.

“In order to comply, we’ll have to move it. But rest assured it will be scheduled for the earliest possible date that compliance can be guaranteed.”

All ticketholders for that event will already have been contacted. As soon as the new date is known, this will be advertised online and in the press.

In the meantime, planning is back in the swing for three concerts and two words and ideas events that will go ahead as advertised on August 7-8, based at St Ambrose Church and Hall, in Templeton Street, Woodend.

COVID-safe rules and processes have been setup, all ticketholders contacted and the festival volunteers are trained in the necessary processes needed.

“We have been so pleased at the way that audiences have enjoyed what we have managed to host so far,” Jacky said.

“They have complied happily with the restrictions that we need to have in place, and we have had so many wonderful complements about managing to actually put on some arts events in a truly difficult time.”

This weekend is an excellent opportunity for everyone to get out and about in Woodend, especially by visiting the three umbrella art exhibitions. These three organisations have been showcased through the festival weekend over the past few years, and rely on the festival as the best way to show their members’ works. These are the Macedon Ranges Potters, the Macedon Ranges Arts Trail and the Gallery Mt Macedon members.

They’ll all be within walking distance from each other in a triangle around the Visitor Information Centre. You can also take advantage of the Scout’s Log Cabin Café, in Forest Street, which is a wonderful place for lunch or morning tea, and contribute to their fundraising efforts.

Local businesses are thrilled to be out of lockdown and are pleased to see festival patrons in the area again. Remember to follow any guidelines for capacities and check in everywhere you go.

Kind-hearted generosity We only have to witness the trials and tribulations leading up to the belated 2020 Olympics in Tokyo to realise that even a big budget and teams of people cannot guarantee a successful event in these challenging times.

But that didn’t deter the kind-hearted ‘good sports’ that surround Kyneton’s notfor-profit, community-owned aged care facility RM Begg.

Months in the planning, volunteer Angela White together with RM Begg’s project coordinator Sarah Collier set a fundraising target of $15,000 to go towards the $35,000 needed to build new pergolas for their residents.

With the generosity of local individuals and businesses who donated services, items and their time, a luxury raffle and goods and services auction was organised to culminate in a wonderful ‘Feel Good’ evening to be hosted by Little Swallow Café on Kyneton’s Piper Street.

Then, Lockdown 5.0 descended and was promptly extended.

But Ms White and Ms Collier’s contingency plan meant the raffle and auction could be held online and despite snap restrictions being thrust upon them, Daniel Richards and Ed Pursey, co-owners of Little Swallow Café, juggled their food supplies and staffing roster to host an impromptu ‘Charity Fundraiser Pivot Event’ with a 100 per cent of takings to be donated to RM Begg.

“Testament to our amazing community everyone rallied and we’re absolutely thrilled to report that together we raised an incredible $27,002!” Ms White said.

The online ‘Feel Good’ auction had an exciting finish with many bids competing down to the wire. A Daniel Butterworth painting, titled Carers, which depicts four of RM Begg’s staff, raised an incredible $3000.

“We were humbled to learn that the winning bidders were Little Swallow Café

who had already done so much,” Ms White said.

But that wasn’t the end of the heartwarming story.

“As you can imagine, we were filled with gratitude when Little Swallow Café donated the painting back to RM Begg!”

When asked about their extraordinary generosity amid such tough times for the hospitality industry, Mr Richards said the nurses on the frontline were the heroes of this pandemic.

"To follow the insurmountable protocols that must be inflicted upon them to keep the residents safe, is beyond me," he said.

"To be so diligent and so protective of their residents that nothing entered their establishment needs to be commended.

"That is why I am donating this painting back to RM Begg, and the fact that it is a painting of four of their workers, I think it's important that it stays at RM Begg.

"Even though it’s a mark on history that we will probably want to forget, I hope that those frontline workers see it as a sense of pride in their achievement to protect those in their care.

"From Little Swallow Cafe, our staff and customers, we salute the work that you do.”

Ms Collier said all at RM Begg were truly grateful and a little overwhelmed by Little Swallow Café’s generosity.

“It’s times like this that we are proud and thankful to be a community-owned organisation in deed as well as in name.

And a special thank you to Angela for her untiring and much-appreciated volunteer efforts. She deserves a gold medal!”

They’re not hitting the road for a mail run, but these Australian 'postie bikes' are destined to deliver a different kind of message.

The Postie Bike Pilgrimage is raising funds and awareness for the Cancer Council in a trip from Bannockburn to Warrnambool, via The Great Ocean Road.

Kyneton organiser Callum Leemon said the pilgrimage had grown to 17 riders with plans to better the ride's 2018 fundraising efforts of $12,576.52.

"Because we raised more than $5000, we were awarded a Cancer Council research award, which we named the Postie Bike Pilgrimage award, and directed the funds toward low-survival cancer research," he said.

"Our target this year is to raise $15,000 for the Cancer Council Victoria."

Last time the bikes made it to outback NSW but Mr Leemon said this year's pilgrimage would be a little different.

"This year’s pilgrimage will be a two-day ride with some new pilgrims and different destinations/scenery," he said.

"We are staying within Victoria to assist

with any change in COVID restrictions/ border closures."

Riders will depart Bannockburn on October 8 and will return via inland country roads the next day.

The Postie Bike Pilgrimage will also have a support crew making the journey, including Callum's father who battled bowel cancer and was part of the ride's inspiration.

Fellow ride organiser Dean Beattie's mother-in-law also survived breast cancer.

Together, Callum and Dean took part in the 2013 and 2015 Mystery Box Rally to raise about $9000 for Cancer Council Victoria. The Postie Bike Pilgrimage is their own initiative raising funds for the same cause.

The groups has had support from several local businesses including Eve-Trans, JEC Constructions and Mr Leemon's own business Leemon Design. Sign Obsession has also supplied all stickers for the ride.

On Friday, the pilgrimage had raised $10,940 with their target in close range.

Born and raised on Wurundjeri Country, Roberts is of Dja Dja Wurrung, Yorta Yorta, English and German descent. She uses visual culture to explore societal issues, her work is sometimes subversive and politically charged. Her multi-disciplinary practice explores her Aboriginal heritage and shows what it is like looking at the world through her eyes.

In this body of work she uses photography to juxtapose intimate images of bark with skin. These are the trees of central and northern Victoria: ironbarks; grey, red and black box; yellow gums; red stringybark; river red gums; and mallees.

The Orbit series celebrates artists living and working in the local region. CAM is open Thurs-Sun from 12pm to 4pm.

Four students from schools in the Macedon Ranges are among Victoria’s best performing VCE students.

They have been recognised with Premier’s VCE Awards, celebrating their outstanding efforts and achievements in their final year of schooling amidst the challenges of 2020.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s updated Environmental Management Plan for Hanging Rock is open for feedback.

Feedback has opened on Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s updated Environmental Management Plan for Hanging Rock.

The plan will continue environmental works, such as weed control and revegetation, and focus on enhancing the site’s vegetation and habitat.

Ecological restoration specialists, Practical Ecology, updated the plan funded by the Victorian Government.

The plan builds on the work outlined in the 2015 Environmental Management Plan and the 2018 Hanging Rock Strategic Plan, which gives priority to protecting and enhancing the site’s environmental and Aboriginal cultural heritage values.

Council’s planning and environment director Angela Hughes said following the launch of the 2018 Strategic Plan, $3 million in funding was provided for the implementation of the Hanging Rock Strategic Plan over three years.

“This project is being undertaken alongside a Victorian Government project to prepare an Aboriginal Conservation Management Plan for the site, which assesses the Aboriginal cultural values of Hanging Rock and requirements for management of the area,” she said.

“Both projects will inform the preparation of a master plan for the site, and I encourage residents to have their say.”

Feedback is sought on the key management directions proposed for the updated Environmental Management Plan, which include: - Establishment of new 'connectivity zones' that will be targeted for progressive revegetation while maintaining public access for recreation.

- Preparation and implementation of a Pest Animal Management Plan.

- Establishment of a planned burn program for ecological, cultural and fuel management outcomes.

- Accessing specialist advice about kangaroo management aimed at reducing the grazing pressure on the site’s native vegetation.

- Implementation of restoration strategies in the core conservation zones.

- Development and implementation of a flora monitoring plan and expansion of fauna monitoring activities.

- Adjustments to existing fuel management zones and fuel management practices to minimise bushfire risk.

- Maintenance of the current number and intensity of public events, with no increase.

The draft updated plan will be available for public feedback until 5pm on August 25.

Call to get the jab done Health and community services across the Macedon Ranges and Hepburn Shire have come together to develop a new COVID-19 vaccination campaign under the banner ‘Get the Jab Done’.

Central Highlands Rural Health, Hepburn Shire Council, Macedon Ranges Shire Council and Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health have all endorsed this codesigned campaign to ensure community members have consistent and trusted vaccination messaging across the region.

‘Get the Jab Done’ communicates the clear message that vaccination will keep our community safe.

Central Highlands Rural Health CEO Maree Cuddihy said over the next few months residents would notice the campaign messaging popping up in health and community facilities across the region, as well as in print media. "t’s been great working on this campaign with our colleagues in health and community services and we hope it

will help encourage our community to ‘get the jab done’,” she said.

Hepburn Shire mayor Cr Lesley Hewitt said the more people vaccinated, the greater the protection our shires would have against COVID-19.

"Both the Hepburn Shire and Macedon Ranges are popular tourist destinations for visitors and we want to be able to welcome people back to our region with open arms. The COVID-19 vaccine is our best shot at making this happen.”

Cr Hewitt said.

COVID-19 vaccines are free, safe and voluntary.

Load up on free firewood

As part of storm recovery operations, Macedon Ranges Shire Council is making free firewood available to local residents at its transfer stations until at least September.

Council's director of planning and environment Angela Hughes said storm recovery focused on cleaning up debris, reducing fire risk and maximising opportunities to further support residents.

“As work continues clearing fallen trees from roadsides, public areas and private property, the council has been developing a plan to ensure the best use of excess wood," Ms Hughes said.

“By offering free firewood to residents, cleared debris offers a community benefit, helping residents stay warm next winter."

Residents must first register their interest by calling council's customer service team on 5422 0333, and a booking time will be confirmed for collecting their wood from transfer stations at Kyneton, Romsey or Woodend.

This will ensure safe loading access and improve management of supplies at the transfer stations, while ensuring COVID-19 protocols are followed.

Firewood collection will be a self-load collection service.

The council advises that storm firewood will be ‘green’ wood, mainly hardwood of mixed species and grade, and therefore is not suitable for burning this season.

Firewood salvaged after recent storms is expected to need to ‘dry’ for at least 12 months before it is suitable for use.

People will not be able to ‘order’ a certain type or size of wood.

Only one load per day up to 2m3 per household applies under the Victoria Government’s domestic firewood collection regulations. A maximum limit of 16m3 per resident is allowed over the entire collection period.

FINANCIAL MATTER$ IT’S ALMOST TIME TO SUBMIT YOUR 2020 / 2021 TAX RETURN.

To SMSF or not to SMSF? That’s the half-a-billlion-dollar question

A recent article in the Australian Financial Review reported that the top selfmanaged superannuation fund in 2019 had assets worth more than half a billion dollars.

Twenty-seven funds were worth more than $100 million each. All these funds are producing annual investment returns taxfree and tax benefits worth way in excess of the full rate single Age Pension.

Unfair? You bet, but nice work if you can get it.

But let’s talk not about the top funds.

Let’s talk about the ones closer to the middle and the bottom. Because just as an SMSF is a very effective way of avoiding income and capital gains tax on investment returns if that SMSF is worth millions of dollars, the ones closer to the bottom often have assets producing investment returns that would be tax-free even if those assets were held outside superannuation.

In other words, if you are the trustee of an SMSF, ask yourself the question: do I really need to be in super at all, let alone in an SMSF with its costly reporting requirements and complicated rules.

Another very important consideration is what happens with your SMSF if you are the ‘active’ trustee (doing the admin and making sure tax returns are lodged and annual audits carried out) and you die before your partner.

It is very common for SMSFs to have two members who are married. If the ‘active’ partner dies first, he or she potentially leaves a nightmare behind for the surviving partner.

So, there are very good reasons to ask yourself the question if you need your SMSF, or at what point it would change from boon to burden, particularly if you are of pension age and retired, with your SMSF in pension phase.

Another example, if you wind up your SMSF and invest your money outside, any subsequent sale of assets may create a capital gains liability.

An alternative to the hassle of an SMSF would be to roll funds into an industry fund.

The answer to the question whether to SMSF or not to SMSF may not be easy to answer. Everyone’s circumstances are different. But it’s a question worth asking and to get some professional advice on.

A morning of games and activities for non-binary, transgender and gender diverse children is taking place next week in Kyneton.

‘Planet GAGA’, which is aimed at primary school aged children, will offer the opportunity for parents, carers and their children to meet up and have some fun. The event is being organised by Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health’s WayOut team.

“For a long time now, we have realised that there is the need for a local group for young children who are gender diverse or gender questioning,” WayOut's Mez Lanigan said.

“Planet GAGA - Gender Affirming Games and Activities – will be safe, welcoming and inclusive and we hope to make it a regular event.”

Castlemaine's Buda Historic Home and Garden will host a Sunday High Tea this month in memory of Josine McEwan.

The high tea replaces the usual memorial lecture and fundraising dinner, held since 2007, due to COVID restrictions.

Josine McEwan was a long-time volunteer gardener at Buda and bequeathed funds to support the ongoing maintenance of the garden she loved. The annual lecture is designed to commemorate her generosity.

This year’s speaker will be Christine Nixon. Nixon is a well-known author, experienced public speaker and advocate for women, disadvantaged youth and multicultural communities.

Nixon has an extraordinary life. She has pursued and been given many opportunities. She has experienced the best and worst of human behaviour. She has been highly praised and highly criticised but never ignored.

Re. the article in last week's Midland Express 'Farmer wants a home'.

A young man who has acted illegally by secretly converting an agricultural shed into a residence without council permission that would never have been granted in the first place.

A septic system and power connected without the necessary permits from two authorities.

A property in three titles, two adjoining and the third separated by a government road. None of the titles singly or combined total the required 40 hectares necessary in the farming zone for a dwelling.

The pseudo cottage built illegally by the previous owners and the purchaser would have been aware of this and if he wasn’t then perhaps he needs to have a discussion with his solicitor and / or conveyancer who handled the settlement of this property.

The rustic cottage was never used by the previous owners as a film set to my knowledge.

If this young man has to attend to 400 acres of family property in the area and travel from Riddells Creek then why doesn’t he stay at the property his father purchased, which adjoins his and has access to Youngs Road, Breakneck Road and across the paddocks.

With all those acres he has to manage when does he get time to attend to the weaners and assist with calving. What a joke!

Re. 'Mount Alexander Bioenergy - the facts' (Midland Express, July 27), ‘emissions reductions’ are very hard to measure in a lengthy, energy consuming and multistage process.

A truckload of ‘clean woody matter’ (for example) is delivered from Maryborough to the Mount Alexander Bioenergy plant in Castlemaine to be mixed with Don KR plastic and cardboard, then put through a shredder, grinder, and palletising machine (wood chippers by any other name?) in preparation for combustion and gasification, ‘gas washing’ and cooling to create an acidic synthetic oil (syngas), which gets thinned with solvents to become similar to diesel, now ready to emit dirty diesel fumes in a generator onsite.

Wouldn’t some Mount Alexander Sustainability Group solar panels on Don’s roof be cheaper, greener, cleaner, and quieter?

Oh, I forgot… solar panels can’t incinerate Don’s quarantined contaminated plastic and it is too expensive to buy disease-free Australian pork without subsidies.

According to the Australian Greens' waste-to-energy fact sheet, multi-stage pyrolytic biomass is now considered as

incineration in the EU and US by their EPAs. Incinerators and their toxic ash are more polluting than coal, plus they are very expensive to operate.

Clever shires like Macedon Ranges are composting organic waste on an industrial scale. They provide a green waste bin and a FOGO bucket (plus 100 biodegradable bags per year). Picked up weekly and taken to a high-tech sorting plant where the compost is correctly mixed, it is turned regularly to prevent the build up of harmful methane gas and when fully composted, sold on to farmers as premium worm and carbon-rich soil conditioner. It has been so popular that expansion of the facility is happening right now (www.mrsc.vic.gov.au).

In contrast, MASG's waste-to-energy proposal appears environmentally insensitive and at odds with the interests of the Castlemaine community.

The proposed bioenergy facility will recover bio-gas from the decomposition of food and concentrate the remaining nutrients and organic carbon in a ‘digestate’ sludge that can be used as fertiliser.

The Victorian compost market is oversupplied - it simply cannot absorb the millions of tonnes of food, garden and timber waste generated in Victoria each year.

Bioenergy offers another use for these materials. The amounts of organics processed by the proposed bioenergy facility will not reduce the availability of compost.

It will, however, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than if the same organics were composted, and still produce soil improving organic fertiliser and biochar.

The questions/concerns raised by David Harris in his letter ('Unanswered questions', Opinions, July 20) concerning the bioenergy facility proposed for Castlemaine on land owned by Don KR have prompted me to write in support of his cautious approach.

I am a resident of Richards Road, albeit at the so-called 'Paris end' of the road (ahem!), and must add my voice to these concerns.

There are many examples on unintended consequences of sensible-sounding projects resulting in environmental disasters, and we should be on guard and fully informed before work begins for such an undertaking.

As we are all urged to "be safe" in these uncertain times, we should heed the same message about this project and be "on the safe side".

One of the most concerning aspects of MAB/ MASG bioenergy facility is the duplicitous nature of the facts.

Comparing all the material that has become available, it is truly mind boggling the contradictions that have been consistently presented.

The following are just a few quotes from MAB/MASG Q&As, website and July 27 Midland Express.

Quote "Any emissions could only result from toxic feedstock. Feedstock, the waste material input, will be selectively planned, contracted and vetted. All materials will be screened to ensure any contaminants are excluded and the process not compromised."

But then this contradiction, "Kerbside waste will come to us via collection companies such as Veolia, Suez, Cleanaway etc. It relies on the organic waste to be separated at the point of collection."

So how is this being vetted, selectively planned and screened if it's straight from the kerbside?

Quote "There will be no garbage trucks like those used for kerbside collections, delivering to the site."

But then this contradiction, "The shire council has been very supportive of this project and has been well aware that this will be best separated at the kerbside."

"We believe it is too expensive to separate at a transfer station."

If it’s coming straight from the kerbside, unsorted, and directly to MAB facility, how can the toxic material, like plastics, metals etc be sorted out of the organic bins? We know it to be true, that a lot of bins never contain the material they are supposed to.

Quote "The range of material that can be used as a feedstock for the biomass facility will be strictly controlled by MAB and scrutinised during technology and regulatory approvals process."

However, we know that MASG will only retain a five per cent share by the time it is built, so once this project is rubber stamped and signed off, who can guarantee what will be used as feedstock?

Up until June, MASG had on their website that they could use demolition material.

Material that has the potential to be highly toxic!

These are just a sample of the contradictions presented by MAB/ MASG.

Questions welcome Bill Grant, MASG committee of management, Castlemaine Mount Alexander Sustainability Group welcomes discussion and questions about the proposed bioenergy facility. A recent letter in the Express suggested commercial composting would be a better use for these materials.

I am a volunteer MASG committee of management member who has worked with the composting industry for over 25 years, and I am an avid supporter and promoter of compost to reduce landfilled organics and improve soil health.

MASG is also a strong supporter of food waste reduction and composting. However, as an environmental scientist I am convinced that renewable energy recovery from clean biomass as proposed by MASG has better net environmental outcomes than commercial composting the same materials.

The bioenergy project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 88,500 tonnes of CO2 per year - that’s the equivalent of driving a car over 478 million kilometres. The project will convert food manufacturing organics into biogas and fertiliser, and clean woody organics into a synthetic gas fuel and potentially biochar.

Around 270,000 GJ of renewable energy would be generated each year.

Keeping organics out of landfill reduces greenhouse gas emissions from landfill at a rate of about 1-2 tonnes CO2-equivalents per tonne of organics recovered. The conversion of woody organics to a biochar fertliser product could further reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 300-500 kg CO2-equivalents per tonne of woody input.

Commercial composting uses energy to shred, screen, aerate and move organic materials, and is a net emitter of greenhouse gases. Most food is biodegraded through the composting process, so it contributes little to the organic carbon in the final compost.

Brian Moynihan, Castlemaine I was 10 years old when the Second World War was over, 1945. It was an exciting happy time, but what really influenced me, regarding growing up during that terrible war, was the creation of the United Nations.

It had a profound influence on me. I was very young, but I felt that 'United Nations' was right and war was wrong.

I am now 86 years old, and I believe all of us, from all countries need to unite, more than ever.

First we have a world 'virus' making people very sick with millions dying. We have had many more wars since 1945 and newspaper reports have suggested we could be in for more. But our greatest need for nations to unite is global warming. Our planet is in terrible trouble, and to save it, our nations have to unite.

What can we do to save our planet?

I believe the younger generations will have to demand a more democratic governing system. More individuals and less political party members fighting each other.

I suggest we need to challenge wealth inequality, so that we can be more humanly equal, working and living together, if we have any chance of helping others to save our planet from global warming.

Let the town grow Alan Kennedy, Kyneton I write in response to the letter 'Significant loss of amenity' (Opinions, July 13).

If you look at the old Kyneton hospital site, all the amenities have gone except the hospital that is going to be restored by Embracia.

Let's start with the comment about the walkway through the allotment. I am 70 years old and when we were kids we used to go down to the weir to swim and our parents would play tennis on the tennis court that was at the end of Mill Street. It was not a walkway, it was a council street.

Simpson Street still continues from Mill Street to St Agnes Place. From the hospital halfway down the hill to Mill Street was blocked many years later as access was gained via Baynton Street, so I don't believe the public maintained it for the last 70 years.

From what I can see on the MRSC contour map, it shows Simpson going right through to St Agnes Place, so I am wondering if it still is a public thoroughfare.

Nobody complained when the Thomas Hogan aged care wing was demolished and moved to the new hospital and later closed. I think it's great that Embracia is willing to restore the old hospital, develop a new aged care facility and childcare centre, both of which Kyneton needs. I think I will be lucky to get a place in one of the aged care homes when I need it as they are being filled by people who can't get places in their own areas.

As for the use of the old hospital, if they own it they should be able to use it how they want to, if it's restored to heritage standards.

I would like to think that Embracia would try to incorporate a walkway if possible. It's about time people stopped protesting developments that Kyneton needs.

What a biomess Malcolm Mars, Castlemaine What began as a benign waste-to-energy proposal has morphed into a giant hazardous chemical processing plant annually processing almost the same tonnage of waste as the steelwork in the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The facility is seemingly a world first and so technologically advanced that no detailed design is available. But worry not! the project is managed by community group, Mount Alexander Sustainability Group, from a part-time office in Castlemaine.

MASG quickly demonstrated its prowess by dropping off shoddy flyers of the proposal to a few dozen neighbours during a COVID-19 lockdown inviting them to attend a Zoom meeting two days later. Somehow the group forgot to include a whopping great biomass thermal heat plant in its flyer claiming “it slipped through the editing unnoticed”.

Community engagement has been restricted to a few neighbours and the Don KR site was selected by ignoring costs and risks, helped by a 10/10 mark despite being within 250m of the nearest residence.

Magical powers have saved 88,000 tonnes of annual carbon emissions so a bioenergy facility in every town should easily achieve net zero emissions for Australia by

2025. Even Barnaby Joyce might sign up to that!

But this ignores emissions from combusting wood and from trucking in tens of thousands of tonnes of waste. Furthermore, council’s Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality shows Mount Alexander Shire’s annual carbon emissions are currently 10,600 tonnes reducing to 1615 tonnes by 2025.

In another disappearing act, chimney stacks, gas flares and on-site woodchippers are missing from the planned layout.

An unlikely alliance has been formed with Don KR meatworks offering it power at mate’s rates for 30 years and providing a convenient way for it to dispose of contaminated waste from imported pork.

Other shires have offered generous measures of waste but Coliban Water takes top prize contributing treated sewage sludges laced with human poo. No stink there though! I can imagine farmers queuing up in droves for bag-loads of specially formulated biochar fertiliser with its highly sought-after mix of industrial plastics, cardboard, animal by-products and human waste.

To finish, a large dose of greenwashing, garnished with an equal amount of PR spin should be enough to allay concerns of Castlemaine residents and win over the council and EPA.

Spontaneous kindness Alexandra Tynan, Castlemaine Returning from shopping on Sunday July 18 my right foot caught the edge of a concrete paver on the Barker Street footpath.

Almost immediately a car pulled up, passengers coming to help. Then, to top it all, a nurse on her bike rolled along, gave her diagnosis, rustled up a neighbour and advised hospital.

Cameras to catch distracte distracted ed d drivers rivers dangerous driver behaviour on Victorian roads, including not wearing a seatbelt.

No infringements will be issued during the pilot and number plate matching will not be undertaken. All photographs captured will be deleted, except for a limited number of de-identified images.

The trial will help understand how the technology can be integrated with the existing road safety camera systems and ensure the cameras operate effectively and accurately, so fines issued under a full rollout are appropriate.

If introduced to Victorian roads, the technology will be able to operate from any location, 24 hours a day, in all conditions, meaning drivers who choose to do the wrong thing will be caught out.

Research conducted by the Monash University Accident Research Centre estimated an automated mobile phone enforcement camera program could prevent 95 casualty crashes per year and save taxpayers $21 million annually.

The cameras allow high-resolution images to be captured in all conditions, regardless of weather and light levels, and for those images to be reviewed in real time to detect potential offences.

Testing will focus on a relocatable version of the technology across several metropolitan and regional locations and will be conducted by the technology provider, Acusensus, and the current traffic camera services contractor.

The government provided more than $120 million dollars in the Victorian Budget 2019/20 to increase mobile camera enforcement by 75 per cent over the coming years and investigate new road safety camera capabilities.

The Victorian Government has launched an Australian-first trial using smart bike light technology that will assist in finding new ways to reduce road trauma in cyclists.

The 12-month trial will see a group of 1000 Victorians given access to a See. Sense smart bike light.

The technology will gather data such as crash events, near miss incidents, abrupt acceleration and deceleration, swerving, road conditions, average speeds, dwell time and rider feedback. It will also increase visibility.

The light operates in tandem with a smartphone app, which transmits data, while additional safety features include a brighter flash in high-risk situations, such as intersections, and when riders brake.

The Transport Accident Commission collaborated with Northern Ireland cycling technology company See.Sense to develop the trial, which will also involve research partners Deakin University and iMOVE CRC. Earlier this year, the state introduced a law of for motorists to allow one metre when passing a rider at speeds up to 60km/h, and 1.5 metres at higher speeds.

Data from the Light Insights Trial will provide fresh insights into how people ride and what can impact their safety. It could also help inform future policy planning and infrastructure improvements for cyclists.

The See.Sense light has been trialled with government authorities in Dublin, London, the Netherlands and Manchester, but the Victorian trial will be the largest of its kind.

“We pride ourselves on exploring new and innovative ways to improve road safety in Victoria, and this Australian-first trial is a truly global initiative aimed at better understanding what people who ride bikes experience on our roads,” TAC's Acting CEO Liz Cairns said.

“The trial will involve a diverse group of participants, allowing us to understand how many different types of people ride, and what more we can look at doing to better protect riders in Victoria.”

The TAC has launched its recruitment drive to find 1000 participants for the trial, and is also working with Bicycle Network, Auscycling and Amy Gillett Foundation to ensure it captures a truly diverse range of riders.

A three-month trial of safety cameras that will capture distracted drivers began last week throughout the state.

The technology is designed to detect mobile phone use behind the wheel and potentially other illegal driving activities.

Beginning last Thursday, Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville said the trial will ensure the technology operates accurately and is appropriate for use on Victorian roads before a potential rollout.

“We know distracted drivers can have devastating outcomes on our roads – this technology is another step towards targeting this kind of unacceptable behaviour and keeping all road users safe," she said.

“We all have a role to play in reducing our road toll – every time someone picks up their phone behind the wheel they are putting lives in danger. This technology will detect those who choose to put lives at risk on our roads.”

Research shows drivers who use a mobile phone while driving are four times more likely to cause a fatal road accident.

Texting, browsing and emailing increase the crash risk even further – up to 10 times.

In 2017-18, more than 30,000 motorists were issued with fines for using a mobile phone while driving in Victoria.

Drivers and riders involved in distractionrelated crashes may make up at least 11 per cent of road fatalities.

Lisa Dennis Castlemaine author and small business advocate Kerry Anderson officially launched her latest book Australian Rural Entrepreneurs via Zoom in the midst of the latest state-wide lockdown.

The local community leader said it wasn’t quite the launch she had planned but after multiple cancellations she decided to push ahead with an online launch.

"We were all looking forward to enjoying the 'Bakery on Broadway' and 'Wine in a Glass' refreshments in person to celebrate but the lockdown launch proved an important point. We can be determined, creative and agile when it comes to sharing positive stories of rural businesses," she said.

"The vision, passion and collaboration shone through, even on Zoom!"

Anderson thanked Marnie Baker, the managing director of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, for her kind words on launching the book, and Ann Durie (Bakery on Broadway), Trent Small (Solar Relief), Elise Brown (Fair Dinkum Dogs) and Larry O’Toole (Graffiti Publishing) and all the other entrepreneurs she interviewed across the country for sharing their stories.

"There was so much inspiration in the Zoom gathering as well as appreciation for the Bendigo Community Bank’s support to rural communities," she said.

Anderson began gathering the 50 stories for the inspirational book back in 2015 while travelling Australia for her work.

"I’ve conducted interviews in parks,

paddocks, sheds, stores, factories and cafes across Western Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland," she said.

The author wanted to acknowledge the valuable contribution Australian entrepreneurs and small businesspeople made to our communities.

"Every single person in business is really making a difference. Collectively small business is the backbone of our national economy and they really are the unsung heroes," she said.

"They don't like patting themselves on the back and so I guess I decided to do it for them."

Anderson also wanted to share the learnings and inspire others.

"I've learnt so much just chatting to

people along the way. We never stop learning, especially in this rapidly changing environment," she said.

"Business is not rocket science but it does require vision, determination, passion and a whole heap of other attributes, which I touch on in the book.

"I really want to remind everyone that rural is important.

"Rural communities are essential service and social hubs for our primary industries. We all eat and wear fibre.

"Who wouldn't want to live in a rural town? The best way to do it is to create your own business," she said.

Video celebrates local landcarers A new 'Landcare Celebration' video pays tribute to the hardworking and passionate volunteer groups across the Mount Alexander region.

The Connecting Country video was funded through a Mount Alexander Shire Community Grant and features a number of landcare volunteers talking about why landcare is important to their community and the vast diversity of projects across the region.

Landcare is for everyone, including the natural landscape and all its diversity, and is a great way to meet your neighbours and make new friends.

"I have seen first-hand what community groups can achieve and the real difference they make on the ground every day," said Asha Bannon, Mount Alexander region landcare facilitator.

"We hope that this video will give our broader community a snapshot of the opportunities that landcare can give you to help care for our precious local environment, while also having some fun!"

Connecting Country thanked MRL Media for its generous contribution to the video, as well as Mount Alexander Shire Council.

They also thanked the many community members who played crucial roles in making this video special, including Beth Mellick, Uncle Rick Nelson, Ian Higgins, Marie

Jones, Drew Marshall, Jane Rusden, Brian Bainbridge, and the Landcare Steering Group.

Landcare is about caring for your land and your local area so it continues to support our community and natural resources for generations to come. This volunteer movement began in Victoria in 1986 and there are now more than 600 landcare groups in Victoria, with about 30 in the Mount Alexander region.

Landcare and friends groups care for our land through practical actions like revegetation, weed and pest control, erosion control, improving water quality, and sustainable agriculture.

They also engage and support community members through workshops, interpretive signs, recording history, building walking tracks, and more.

Joining a landcare or friends group is a great way to actively help your local environment and get to know local people. You can get involved at any level, from dropping in to a working bee occasionally to taking a management role.

A Telstra spokesperson said the new payphone complied with Disability Discrimination Act requirements to make it easier for people with disabilities to use.

"The new site will also have access to Telstra Air Wi-Fi for eligible customers," the spokesperson said.

Presentations to stalwarts

Special thanks and presentations were conveyed to two outstanding Kyneton Bowling Club members at the recent annual general meeting.

Camille Potter and Bob Short are both relinquishing their roles at the club.

For the past 30 years, Camille has been treasurer, meticulously managing finances in that time.

Also an outstanding bowler, she accumulated many championships over the years.

Bob Short has filled multiple roles at the club, including president, secretary, and board member, as well as being a fine bowler. He is moving to a warmer climate at Bendigo and will be greatly missed.

The election of office-bearers saw the leadership team for 2021-2022 elected: President, Ron Ackroyd; vice-president Lloyd Dymond, secretary Cath Bermingham; treasurer Christine Plowman; committee members Jim Cooper, Denise Knight and Bev Hanna.

Several presentations not completed earlier in the year due to lockdowns were made.

Club singles champions were Mark Smoljo and Christine Plowman. They were members of the division one pennant runner-up team and largely committed to club and division events during the past season.

John Carmichael was successful in the prized Watson award.

Division two midweek premiership medals went to Bill Hartigan, Alan Mathison, John Wells, Ron Ackroyd, Neil Rothe, Oscar Regan, Ray Watson and Mick and Cath Bermingham.

The 2021-2020 season will be a little different with the inclusion of Kilmore and Broadford.

Value of sponsors During the COVID-19 pandemic, the support of loyal sponsors has been emphasised by many district clubs and organisations.

Kyneton Bowling Club is one example, and at the club’s annual meeting thanks were conveyed to many sponsors.

Midweek Division 2 Premiers.

In particular, T.J. Scott & Son, Mawsons, Sizzlin’ Sensations, Kyneton Toyota, Evolve Stone, Eve Trans, Adrian Plowman, Landmark and Kyneton Dry Cleaners were commended for on-going support.

Their input has helped the club to

assist junior members, improve the surrounds, and provide an environment for the benefit of members.

Strong support is of particular importance in times of uncertainty and lockdowns, and the club is extremely grateful to these businesses.

Blue belts at Kyneton Dojo

Members of Kyneton Goju Ryu Karate club were recently awarded their Blue Belts by Chief Instructor for Australasia James Sumarac 8th Dan. The group trains at the Kyneton Community and Learning Centre on Wednesday evenings at 6.30pm.

Instructor, Sensei Kevin Vivian said there was a wide range of age groups and students are encouraged to learn at their own pace.

“While Traditional Karate provides self-defence skills and attributes, there are many other benefits that see students improve their physical fitness and selfconfidence in a professional, caring and respectful environment," he said.

“Next term we’ll introduce more Chi-

nese Internal practices including Qi Gong and Tai Chi which actively promote better health and well-being."

As part of this focus, students can opt to train at the International Headquarters in Lancefield, where there is a purpose-built Martial and Healing Art Centre called Wu Lin Retreat.

Sensei Kevin holds 3rd Degree Black Belt a Martial Arts Instructor Diploma, has extensive experience including training in Japan and Taiwan, and is a 7th generation instructor from a direct lineage of Traditional Goju Ryu Karate.

Goju Ryu Kakurin Kan has been established in Australia since 1974 and has direct links to Japan through Master Michiro Noguchi.

Victory for the Rangers As for many clubs the year 2020 "didn’t exist" so 2021 has become year one for Macedon Rangers Soccer Club - and what a first year it has been.

The numbers of teams registered in competition levels exceeded expectation, and in rain, hail or shine, win or lose, the Rangers have never given up and took every opportunity presented.

The opportunity to attend an invitation only selection day with Melbourne Victory was no different.

What was up for grabs was selection into the Melbourne Victory Pre-Academy Training squads a talent identification program.

To have one Ranger achieve this in the first year would have been an enormous reward for the hard work put into establishing and running the club. There were five Rangers picked up.

The club congratulated Charlee and Olivia, achieving such a result with only six months playing experience and also Finley, Ethan and Mike. The program will run over 18 weeks and the opportunities the program will open for these wonderful Rangers are endless.

MCDFNL juniors return The Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League (MCDFNL) junior sides were thrilled to return to the park and court for Round 14 competition last Saturday, July 31 after the latest lockdown.

Results were as follows: 17.5s Football In the 17.5s Football Avoca produced a strong 62 point win over the Trentham.

Avoca 14.10 (94) to Trentham 5.2 (32).

Goal kickers for Trentham were Tristan Newman, Jobe Dowling 2 and Otto Thek.

In the 15 & Under division Trentham 20 d Avoca 11, Newstead 15 lost to Maldon 34 and Navarre 10 lost to Harcourt 43.

13 & Under saw Trentham 2 go down to Avoca 33, Newstead 24 d Maldon 9 and Harcourt 46 account for Navarre 6.

11 & Under competition saw Newstead 17 d Maldon 4 and Harcourt 27 d Navarre 2.

Meeting Monday MCDFNL operations manager Mathew Begbie said the league were scheduled to have a club meeting on Monday night to determine when Seniors will start back mainly in relation to playing with no crowds.

Adjustments will be made to the home and away season to try and ensure the 13 clubs are able to play each other at least once and hopefully the finals series will go ahead as scheduled.

Wednesday’s competition was the first for several weeks, with Jonathan Beachey (19) the winner with 31 stableford points in tough conditions.

Graham Hackett (24) was runner-up on 29. Beachey was NTP. In Saturday’s stableford talented young sportsman Louis Thompson (21) was a runaway winner with 44 points, from another junior in Tom Rutledge (23) on 37.

NTPs went to Glen Cook, Peter Walsh, Pat Clohesy, Teaota Davies and Mat Hodgkiss (2).

Lancefield Plenty of Lancefield golfers out and about on Saturday, with Lockdown (hopefully) finished.

Overall stableford winner was C-grader Ken Murchison (21 handicap) with 36 points.

Todd Lambert (6) topped A-grade with 35, and Barry Brennan (12) was best in B-grade with 34.

Nearest the pins were Todd and Trevor Lambert, Barry Flentjar, Kevin McBride and Gary Dudderidge.

A grader Simon Keating was able to overcome the windy conditions to take out the Jumbuck Sheepskin and Leather July Monthly Medal with a nett 66. B grade went to Isaac Golden despite a nett 75, while C grade's James Semmens nett 69 was enough for a grade win.

The fifth and final Sunday Sirens 'Ladies Get Into Golf Session' was played under clear skies and sunshine.

Romsey After three weeks without golf, Romsey members were keen to ‘get back on the park’ on Saturday, despite soggy conditions.

There was surface water and long grass with a plethora of plugged balls.

The heavily motivated field battled to string together some good holes.

President Mal Mottram (8) was the clear winner and NTP with 33 points, from Anthony Lakey (19) next best with 29.

Trentham Trentham golf course re-opened on Saturday, after being out of action since the devastating storm on June 9.

Hard work by ground staff, arborists and volunteers was greatly appreciated.

Despite calm conditions, scores were not as good as anticipated.

B-grader Kevin Sheedy (handicap 20) took out the Jack Groves Memorial trophy with 38 points, on a countback from Trevor McKeon (21) who topped C-grade.

The A-grade prize went to David Thiele (6) with 34 points.

Woodend Woodend golfers were pleased to be back in action on Saturday.

Mick Keating (handicap 10) was the stableford winner with 39 points, from Mick Fitzpatrick (15) on 37.

Top spot battle in RDFNL Bill West

The only side to topple Riddell League premiership favourite Wallan this season is Macedon, and these two contenders meet on Saturday with plenty at stake.

The Magpies are playing a strong brand of football and have great depth; Macedon has been able to win most of the tight matches apart from going down to Woodend-Hesket early in the season, then thrashing the Hawks prior to the latest lockdown.

This Saturday, the Cats travel to Greenhill Reserve at Wallan for an acid test – the winner will take over top spot and if this is maintained, play the fourthplaced team in a semi-final knockout match.

The return from a second lockdown last weekend saw Wallan run right away from Riddell with a seven goals to one last quarter blitz.

Ace goalkicker Matt Perri could not be contained by the Bombers’ defenders, and finished with eight goals.

Riddell slipped to fourth spot on the ladder, just two points clear of Romsey after the Redbacks found the answer to Lancefield with 14 goals in the second half at Tigerland.

Matt Burkett continued his fine form for the winners, as did tall ruckman Nathan

Hoy. Lancefield’s first half was good, but the Redbacks monopolised the ball in the third term. The reserves match resulted in an 8.7 apiece tie.

Fifth-placed Romsey is at home to Woodend-Hesket this Saturday in a mustwin game. When these sides played on April 24 it was 27.4 to 8.12 in the Redbacks’ favour, but a lot has changed since then.

The Hawks kept Diggers Rest honest at Gilbert Gordon Oval on Saturday, with the visitors taking control late to win by 26 points in a low-scoring encounter.

Club stalwart Jimmy Hepburn plays his 200th senior game for Woodend-Hesket on Saturday.

Exciting finishes in A-grade

There were two exciting finishes in Riddell League A-grade matches on Saturday.

Fifth-placed Woodend-Hesket led the strong Diggers Rest combination 26-14 at half time, but the match tightened up and finished in a 40-40 tie.

Megan Grbac, Laura Carland and Hayley Rogers were in good form for the Hawks.

Lancefield edged out Romsey 49-48 with respective goal shooters Jordan Furness and Hope Evans putting on a clinical display.

Riddell went down 46-41 to Wallan but remain on top of the ladder, and Western Rams defeated Melton Centrals 64-26 in the only one-sided contest.

Finals to be played at Romsey, Lancefield Bill West

Riddell League football and netball competitions returned last weekend for all age groups.

Original finals arrangements have been changed: Lancefield and Romsey will host the senior semi-finals on Friday, September 24, and the Grand Final will be at Romsey on Sunday, October 3.

While Romsey is used to hosting finals matches, it is quite some years since any senior finals matches were played at Lancefield -- a ground where grand finals were traditional for many years.

Clarke Oval in Sunbury has been used for RDFNL grand

finals in very recent seasons.

The semi-finals on September 24 (public holiday) will see 1 play 4 and 2 play 3, with the two winners advancing to the Grand Final.

The league liaised closely with all senior and junior clubs last week to progress the rest of the season.

League general manager Jordan Doyle expressed thanks to Macedon Ranges Shire Council, Romsey Football Netball Club, Romsey Cricket Club, Gisborne District Cricket Association Cricket Victoria and AFL Victoria for their support on the later Grand Final date and helping the community clubs maximise the whole home and away season.

The changes were designed to enable all clubs to play 16 home and away matches (eight home and eight away) to maximise revenue later in the season when crowds return.

Doyle said it was unfortunate that for last weekend and this weekend spectators could not attend matches but the league would be working hard with the senior clubs to minimise the pain of no spectators.

The junior structure has been pushed back two weeks to accommodate a full home and away season, as well as a three-week finals series.

Junior qualifying/elimination finals are on Sunday, August 29, the preliminary finals on Sunday, September 5, and the Grand Final on Sunday, September 12.

Snell given AFLW chance Kyneton’s Elizabeth Snell was thrilled to be selected by Western Bulldogs in the AFLW draft last week, and was scheduled to meet up with her new teammates yesterday.

“I didn’t know if I would get picked or not,” the 19-year-old swift moving and versatile midfielder said.

She admitted it was a very anxious wait, and she was the third player chosen by the Bulldogs, coached by former St Kilda champion Nathan Burke.

Snell was scheduled to meet up with her new teammates yesterday, and is looking forward to four weeks of pre-season training.

The AFLW season begins in December.

On July 18, Snell took part in the AFLW Draft Combine. She had a couple of discussions with Western Bulldogs recruiters, and also spoke with three other clubs.

Snell first played with the Kyneton Tigers as a 15-year-old, and has always been a Kyneton resident.

Her parents Mark and Christine have been strongly supportive of her sporting pursuits (she played basketball with Woodend Hawks in the Sunbury competition for several seasons).

“I owe a lot to the Kyneton club and the

coaches who have helped me along the way," she said.

Despite playing just five of eight matches with Bendigo Pioneers in the NAB League this season, Snell won the Pioneers’ best and fairest, averaging 20 disposals, eight tackles and almost a goal a game.

She has enjoyed leadership roles and helping younger players, as well as juggling commitments In the VFLW for Essendon and as a Vic Country representative player.

Western Bulldogs won the AFLW premiership in 2018, with Trentham trailblazer Jenna Bruton a member of that side. Bruton later switched to North Melbourne, winning that club’s best and fairest.

Maddy Prespakis, who began with Romsey juniors, is a now a Carlton star. Her younger sister, Georgia, was selected by Geelong in last week’s draft.

Snell has no illusions about how tough it will be establishing in the AFLW, but it keen to give it her best shot.

Workwise, Snell is starting a course to become a non-emergency patient transporter in the hospital system.

Kyneton Football Netball Club congratulates her and many locals will be following her foray into the top echelon of women’s football.

Gisborne women’s football team scored a huge win against Airport West in their EDFL match on Saturday.

The home side kicked 1.1 in the first quarter but failed to score again, with Gisborne monopolising the ball and finishing with 16.22 (118) on the board.

There were 12 individual goalkickers for Gisborne, with best players listed as Claire Bourdon, Chloe Prpic, Chiara Dickins, Brianna Woodburn and Mackenzie Hayes.

Gisborne remains in fifth position on the ladder.

Bendigo Football Netball League’s 2021 season resumes on Saturday, after the lockdown period meant several rounds could not take place.

At the Kyneton Showgrounds, the matches for the Tigers are against the Gisborne club, which has strong football and netball sides across the board.
