Call to reshape 30-year plan Amy Hume Gisborne ratepayer Dean Markham is leading a fight against a 30-year plan for his town that he fears foreshadows a 'Sunbury future'.

He is challenging Macedon Ranges Council's draft Gisborne Futures documents that plan for a population boom and map impending development.

Determined to keep the town regional, Mr Markham has launched his own campaign to "motivate locals to take control of their future".

"Ask anybody in town if they want Gisborne to become the next Sunbury, Melton or Taylors Lakes. The area doesn't need or want growth. We need to preserve what we've got while we've got it," he told the Express.

Controversial elements of the plan include introduction

of three-storey buildings in the town centre and expansion of Gisborne Business Park at the town's gateway.

Mr Markham is also promoting thought around capping population growth.

"The review of Gisborne Futures has got to be to 'chuck it in the bin and start again'. The more noise people make, the better," Mr Markham said.

'MAJOR, MULTI-LAYERED, COMPLEX' Gisborne Futures comprises three key draft reports - a structure plan, urban design framework and neighbourhood character study.

Macedon Ranges Residents Association said the project was "major, multi-layered, complex strategic planning work" that residents needed more time to process.

They seek numerous changes to the project in a detailed 18-page submission and called out expansion for the shire,

which was one of the first in the state to be named a distinctive landscape.

"Perhaps the most incredible aspect is Gisborne Futures' proclamation that significantly increased expansion of medium density, high-rise development, no subdivision minima, and urban sprawl ... retains semi-rural character and a "village in the valley"," they said.

CONSULTATION NEXT YEAR Seven weeks of community consultation for Phase 3 of the Gisborne Futures project closed last Monday, with further consultation expected next year.

The latest process attracted more than 640 people online survey responses and at least 100 written submissions.

About 80 people joined a council-hosted webinar series to air concerns and ask questions.

Young achiever Teen climate activist empowers change

Stalking charge A 64-year-old man has been arrested and charged with stalking in the Romsey area.

Macedon Ranges Crime Investigation Unit conducted an investigation into allegations last Tuesday.

The man was bailed to appear at the Kyneton Magistrates Court.

Extra care for immunisations

Macedon Ranges Council's immunisation team has taken extra precautions to control COVID-19 exposure risk during immunisation sessions. Council's director of planning and environment, Angela Hughes, said receiving scheduled vaccinations for children remained essential during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Our immunisation team has incorporated extra precautions to minimise transmission risk while vaccinating your child," Ms Hughes said.

"Vaccination is not only safe for them, it makes it safer for everyone's children and the rest of the community. It's important to maintain high immunisation rates during the pandemic."

Increased safety measures adopted include: only one parent attending with their child, staff wearing personal protective equipment, social distancing, screening and temperature checks.

Bookings are not required. Immunisation session times are: First Thursday of the month: Gisborne - 9am to 10.30am, Kyneton - noon to 1pm, Woodend - 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

Castlemaine teen and climate change activist Harriet O'Shea Carre has won the prestigious The Bridge Create Change Award at the 2020 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards.

The Create Change Award acknowledges and celebrates the commitment young people make in achieving or participating in positive activities that empower change locally, nationally and/or internationally.

The 15-year-old won the award from a strong field of young achievers. The winners were announced on Friday evening during an online awards presentation, hosted by 7NEWS presenter Mike Amor.

Harriet is a fervent human rights and climate change advocate. Seeing it as her moral duty, Harriet co-initiated the #schoolsstrike4climate movement in Australia to demand real climate action from political, corporate and social leaders.

Harriet, with co-founders Milou Albrecht and Callum Neilson-Bridgefoot, led students at Castlemaine in September 2018 to strike outside local politicians' offices and demand fast and big systematic policy change to create a better future. The trio also led local students to strikes in Melbourne.

Harriet is also a co-winner of the Bob Brown Foundation 2019 Young Environment of the Year Award and the Mount Alexander Shire Youth Leadership Award in Environment, and was honoured to represent Australia at the United Nations Youth Climate Summit in New York.

Harriet said she was very excited to win the latest award.

Reserve master plan draws debate Eve Lamb

A "once in a lifetime opportunity to improve our premier reserve" is the way one local councillor has described the adoption of an amended Camp Reserve Master Plan in recent days.

At its September meeting last week, Mount Alexander Shire Council voted 6:1 in favour of adopting the new plan intended to guide some $6 million of works and upgrades planned for the reserve in a saga dating back at least a decade.

But the move drew debate, with Cr Bronwen Machin strong in her opposition to aspects of the plan that ultimately curried favour with other councillors when it came time to vote.

The successful version - favoured by the reserve's own committee of management - differs from the version that council officers were recommending the council adopt, notably in terms of the planned siting of new netball and multipurpose courts.

While council officers recommended siting the two new courts at the northern end of the reserve, the committee's preferred option was to put them at the southern end, near the Forest Street entrance.

Mayor Cr Christine Henderson said the new plan was developed in response to feedback from the committee of management and nearly 90 submissions received during public consultation on the draft plan last year.

"It was informed by a number of independent reports that looked at impacts on traffic, heritage, trees and flood, in response to concerns we heard during community engagement," Cr Henderson said.

"This included things like the location of the pavilion, car parks and pathways, and a strong desire to protect trees and heritage at the reserve."

More consultation will be undertaken on detailed designs for major elements, including the community pavilion and court design, with the upgrade to infrastructure forecast to cost around $6 to $7 million and to be delivered over several years.

Next step for aged-care plan in Gisborne

Speedsters nabbed

Woodend police have nabbed three speedsters in Tylden and Woodend last week.

A 19-year-old male from Drummond was fined after detected travelling 132km/h in a 100km/h zone on Tylden Road, Tylden last week.

He was fined $537 and had his licence suspended for three months.

A male driver from Craigieburn was fined $330 after clocked traveling 91km/h in a 70km/h zone in Tylden while a man from Mill Park was fined $330 for traveling 128km/h on the Calder Freeway, Woodend.

Macedon Ranges councillors will scrutinise the finer details of a large-scale aged-care facility in Gisborne as it progresses through planning.

The proposal for 110-112 Willowbank Road includes a two-storey 'high level' aged-care facility with 72 beds and 35 single-storey 'lower level care' units.

Plans also show a single-storey aged-care community centre, car parking and small private park.

Councillors voted to amend the Fersfield Road Development Plan to allow such a project but on the condition that they would be notified of the planning permit still to come.

The planning permit would outline greater detail of the site functions/operations and placement within the approved area.

Typically a planning permit under an approved development plan does not require advertising and would not necessarily go before councillors.

Councillor Helen Radnedge pushed for councillor notification due to community concerns relating to bulk of the building, loss of amenity, operation hours, traffic, waste and privacy, among others.

The application attracted three submissions including an objection that labelled the building "commercial" in look and feel.

Councillors will be notified of the next step in the development process and will have the ability to challenge the planning permit.

Digital rollout saving money and water Central Victorians have potentially saved at least 60 megalitres of water and more than $100,000, thanks to Coliban Water's Digital Metering Program.

Since 2018, Coliban Water has installed more than 25,000 digital data loggers on existing household, business and community water meters across the region.

The digital loggers record water use every hour and transmit the data daily back to Coliban Water.

Coliban Water's manager of infrastructure Corey Bourne said the loggers meant leaks could be detected, and acted on, quickly.

"We've already been able to use the data to discover water leaks on a number of properties and act straight away," he said.

"We identified a school using 25,000 litres a day during school holidays, and a home that was using 15,000 litres a day.

"Without the data loggers, we wouldn't have been able to

identify these leaks until the next quarterly bill."

Mr Bourne said the final stage of the digital rollout was set to begin in the coming weeks, with a goal of having all the loggers installed and operating by 2023.

"Better data will also help us manage water pressure, and make modelling of water leaks and losses in our water networks easier," he said.

"The data loggers are free and there will be no costs on top of normal access and use charges."

Coliban Water will hold online information sessions on Friday October 2 for those wanting more information about digital data loggers.

Regional Victoria is now in the Third Step of the Victorian Government’s coronavirus (COVID-19) roadmap for reopening. The key things to remember are: • There are no restrictions on reasons to leave home. Stay safe as restrictions ease by washing your hands regularly, wearing a face covering when you leave home, coughing and sneezing into your elbow, and keeping at least 1.5 metres from others.

• You can keep your friends and family safe by meeting outdoors. There is a lower risk of spreading coronavirus between people if you are outdoors. Groups of up to ten people are able to meet outdoors.

• Restrictions have eased to allow for cafes, restaurants, beauty and personal care, and some outdoor entertainment venues to open.

Push continues for sports hub

Macedon Ranges Shire Council released concept design plans for the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub for community feedback earlier this month.

Council's director of planning and environment, Angela Hughes, said the council was pleased with the high level of interest as community feedback would help the council to refine its vision for future growth in Gisborne.

"We wanted to check if issues raised in previous consultations in recent years fairly reflect our community's priorities for the future and if the balance is right in these draft plans," Ms Hughes said.

"Our objective is for council to implement the necessary planning tools and strengthen design controls to protect Gisborne's neighbourhood and landscape character values."

Ms Hughes said the project team would review all recent submissions, survey results and other comments received before presenting a modified version of the draft plans to the community for a further round of consultation next year.

When burning off, residents are reminded not to cause a nuisance to neighbours, monitor weather conditions, never leave a burn unattended, monitor the burn for at least seven days after extinguished and to register burns by calling 1800 668 511.

Fire management officers will begin annual property inspections in October and will issue fire prevention notices to properties that present a fire risk - outlining works that must be completed by the due date.

Failure to comply will result in a contractor engaged to carry out the works and the property owner will be required to pay the costs of the works, a fine of $1,652 and administration fees.

Local residents are urged to start preparing their property for the summer bushfire season.

Macedon Ranges Council's director of planning and environment, Angela Hughes, said everyone had a role to play in preventing fires and a well-maintained property would help to reduce fire risk.

"You can do this by cutting long grass and cleaning up fine fuels such as weeds, leaves and twigs around your property," she said.

Tips for reducing fire risk around the property include: removing overhanging branches, keeping grass short, clearing combustible materials, clearing roof gutters, and maintaining any defendable space around your home.

Residents should also ensure any rainwater tanks are accessible and full and have a bushfire survival plan in place.

To help residents with the cleanup, the council provides a free green waste dropoff service at transfer stations.

The council, in consultation with local fire brigades, will also lift the burning off restrictions during October for land less than one acre.

The federal government has confirmed it has no current plans to fund the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub, says Member for McEwen Rob Mitchell.

The Labor MP received a "not now" response earlier this month when urging the Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development to show interest in the project and commit the $10 million needed.

"The minister says he understands the significance of the project to the local community, but in the next breath says the council should just apply again later because there are no grants programs now open in his department," Mr Mitchell said.

"It's a bitter pill to swallow when the minister tells us his government 'is committed to fast-tracking projects' but then ignores this project and all the support it's garnered and all the work that already been done to get it up."

Long-campaigned for, the sports precinct is the council's largest ever building project and would cater for a range of sports and recreational pursuits, while also attracting regional-level competition.

Mr Mitchell said the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Hub was a vital and shovel-ready project, that is fully planned, and has confirmed support from Macedon Ranges Shire Council ($10.7M), Victorian Government ($11.6M) and AFL Victoria ($100,000).

The federal government has already rejected the project twice under the Building Better Regions Fund. The council released the much-anticipated concept design for the project earlier this month.

The Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct will be spread across two interconnected sites in New Gisborne at the corner of Barringo and Hamilton Roads.

It was originally estimated the complete project would cost $41.4 million and the council's funding advocacy continues for the project.

The Lancefield Romsey Community Support initiative has highlighted the generosity and support of the region throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Since March, volunteers and local businesses have helped cook and provide in excess of 1700 frozen meals, deliver food parcels, conduct weekly friendly chats and provide additional support through referrals to other agencies.

The initiative is a collaboration between Lancefield and Romsey Neighbourhood Houses which, to date, has been achieved without formal emergency relief funding from local or state government.

"To say that times are tough and that many have been severely impacted by this pandemic would be an understatement," volunteer Kathryn said.

"With so many financially impacted through loss of work/reduced hours/slowing down of business, having to self-isolate/quarantine due to health requirements and feeling isolated and disconnected from family, friends and community, this initiative has been more important than ever in supporting our communities and looking after each other."

The work has been made possible through food and monetary donations from generous community members and volunteers assisting with cooking, food deliveries and keeping locals connected through friendly chats.

Neighbourhood House members say they are "in awe of the beautiful community spirit and resilience shown".

Malmsbury marks cultural heritage

New cultural signage has been installed at Malmsbury Common Reserve in conjunction with Djandak, the business enterprise of the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council's director of planning and environment, Angela Hughes, said a desire was expressed by the community to have Dja Dja Wurrung Traditional Owners acknowledged and reflected in the reserve during the development of the Malmsbury Common Reserve Master Plan.

"This provided the impetus to initiate dialogue between Malmsbury Landcare, the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation and council officers to explore ways this could occur," Ms Hughes said.

Through Djandak, Dja Dja Wurrung people worked with Malmsbury Landcare to develop the design and content of the signs, which have now been installed.

The signs speak to the values of the Djaara people as reflected in place, the waterway and specific food and fibre plants that you would find there. These include the Dja Dja Wurrung Djaa-ndak-i (Welcome to Dja Dja Wurrung Country), the Kapa Gatjin (Knowing Water) and the Manya (Meeting Place, a Cultural Place).

Six interpretative signs are located along the trail - Buwatj, Witji, Gitawil Matom, Murna, Dhurrung Wurrkuk and River Mint. These provide information on how plants were used and how people are together relearning their cultural importance.

The sign locations will capture displays of plants, some of which are already in situ, others are yet to be planted and will be developed over time.

"Council invites the whole community to come, enjoy this space and engage with Traditional Owners through the signs," Ms Hughes said.

Free thermal home assessments Eve Lamb

Maldon couple Linda Pannan and Graham Thomas are already reaping significant savings from making their new home highly energy efficient.

Now they're about to share their knowledge through a new community project aimed at helping the town's residents become "climate ready".

The two are among a small band of local volunteers who will next month train up to provide free thermal-comfort home assessments for other locals so they, too, can learn how to boost their home's thermal-comfort factor, improving its energy efficiency.

It's all part of the town's new Climate Ready Maldon project being led by the local neighbourhood centre.

"I think it's a pretty good project," Maldon Neighbourhood Centre coordinator Amy Atkinson says.

"It's unique in that it is focusing primarily on thermal comfort.

"The volunteers will work with Maldon residents to assess their homes and identify appropriate changes to homes and behaviour."

A scientist by profession, Linda Pannan, and Graham Thomas, a builder who constructed their own new energy-efficient abode, say there are myriad ways to make homes more energy efficient, boosting the thermal-comfort factor, while benefiting the environment and bank balance.

"Insulation is a crucial thing really," Graham says.

Lovers of independent cinema, live music and the arts are once again being asked to make a contribution to help secure the future of Castlemaine's iconic Theatre Royal by becoming a 'Loyal Royal' member.

The inaugural 'Loyal Royal' membership drive in 2019 was a resounding success and has helped to ensure the theatre can continue as the beating heart of Castlemaine and integral part of the cultural, historical and artistic landscape in regional Victoria.

Theatre Royal operators Felicity Cripps and Tim Health said it had been an unprecedented year, yet they had survived and managed to bring more life and sparkle to the theatre than it had seen in years!

"With the help of over 500 Loyal Royal Members, we have been able to replace 15 leather couches downstairs and restored 60 cinema seats in the upper circle," Felicity said.

"We have also upgraded the stage lighting and sound system and worked with the landlords and Heritage Victoria to tile the foyer floor to heritage standards," she said.

"We were also thrilled to take out the award for Best Regional Live Music Venue in last year's Music Victoria awards - the fifth time running for our Theatre Royal," Tim said.

It has been a whirlwind year for the local couple who were also thrilled to welcome a beautiful baby girl just a few short weeks ago and are now hoping to extend their 'Loyal Royal' family to keep upgrading the historic theatre.

Tim said more works were currently underway to restore the upstairs area at the front of the building (currently a decommissioned area) and scaffolding works would begin over the next few months to restore the front left-hand side of the exterior wall, which dates back to the 1920s.

"For this year's drive, we are aiming to restore the cinema seating in the left and right wings of the upper circle. We will also be seeking funds for the upgrading of our cinema projector, heating/

Call to reopen fitness venues

Gym owners have joined forces to pressure the Victorian Government to reclassify fitness venues as essential services.

Fitness venues were excluded from reopening in the state's latest ease of coronavirus restrictions for regional areas and Kyneton Ozzfit owner Shannon Downey said the move was "disappointing".

"We anticipated that we would be opening with restrictions," he said.

"Primarily we are there to help people change their lives and to help improve their health, wellbeing and quality of life. To have that taken away was a dagger.

"We have heard from people who are struggling with their mental health and are now without the ability to have some sort of social and physical outlet and a structured fitness program outside of being stuck at home."

Under the state's 'Third Step' to reopening, personal trainers and other staff can attend the facility for the purpose of recording or streaming digital classes, with up to five people permitted but the arrangement.

Real Strength Studio Castlemaine's Dean Mawby was forced to hold off therapeutic group training sessions for dementia and Alzheimer's patients.

"The effect on people with early dementia who could be making inroads is really frustrating and loved ones have noticed

changes," he said.

"There's a whole lot of people who are wanting to get back on track with their health and fitness. It's a simple process to have good levels of hygiene and meticulous cleaning throughout a session."

The prolonged fitness venue shutdown has disconnected some crucial exercise support programs and also impacted dance studios.

Dance schools like Gisborne Dance Academy is pushing to see studios reclassified immediately, and those with students aged 18 and under to reopen in line with regional schools.

But, under the premier's latest restrictions, Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said fitness venues were considered high risk. There has been one outbreak in a gym in Victoria, which has 27 cases linked to it.

"Gyms are currently closed under Victorian restrictions as the nature of working out carries a high risk of transmission, due to sweat and heavy breathing as well as shared equipment," Ms Thomas said.

Under both regional Victoria and the metropolitan Melbourne roadmaps, indoor gyms are scheduled to reopen in the last step, which is expected to begin from November 23 subject to having no new cases and public health advice.

Gisborne firefighters are in training to take part in the seventh annual Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb to raise funds for mental health, only this time the challenge will be a virtual one.

The stair climb is an annual charity event that sees firefighters and other emergency services personnel come from all over Australasia and the world to compete and fundraise for depression, post-traumatic stress injury and suicide.

The event simulates the actions of a firefighter entering a burning high rise building, wearing full structural firefighting protective clothing, and wearing self-contained breathing apparatus.

Gisborne Fire Brigade 3rd Lieutenant Bevan Moody said other emergency services represented included police, SES, Forest Fire Management and ambulance, all of whom climbed in the personal protective clothing and equipment relevant to their agency.

"This year's event will be a virtual one due to the restrictions imposed by COVID-19," Lt Moody said.

"Participating members from Gisborne Fire Brigade will be racking up the steps by hiking, practising social distancing and climbing up and down steps at home."

Beginner bird watching next on offer

Connecting Country set a new attendance record for their much-anticipated event, 'Tricky Birds of central Victoria with Geoff Park and Chris Tzaros' a few weeks ago. This online free event 'sold out' with 500 bookings recorded the day before the event.

Connecting Country was thrilled to host the all-star lineup of box-ironbark expert naturalists, Geoff Park and Chris Tzaros. The free Facebook event page even reached 112,000 people. Bookings included people from across Victoria, as well as New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory, plus some enthusiastic registrations from the United States!

Jess Lawton (Connecting Country monitoring coordinator) kicked off the workshop with a short history of Connecting Country's woodland bird monitoring program and thanked the hard-working bird monitoring volunteers. Geoff covered the topic of identifying raptors and Chris focused on identifying thornbills of central Victoria, followed by an hour of interactive panel discussion and a chance to ask the experts those tricky bird-watching questions.

Both of the presentations were delivered with the passion and precision you would expect from Australia's leading bird experts and photographers, with many beautiful images and helpful tips about identifying these look-a-like birds that are so difficult to distinguish.

The virtual question-and-answer panel worked effectively, despite the panel and hosts being up to 500km apart, and the audience only having a text box to ask questions.

One of the most interesting topics of the evening was how to distinguish between the various bird species in the thornbill family. There are eight thornbill species in our region, and all can look quite similar.

Chris talked about the brown and inland thornbill as being some of the trickiest two birds to tell apart anywhere in the country.

Chris noted that the main difference was the colour of the forehead, which was rufous (reddish brown) with dark scalloping in the brown thornbill, and grey-black with white scalloping with the inland thornbill.

Connecting Country now looks forward to its next education event, 'Bird watching for beginners', on October 24. This event will suit anyone who is interested in learning more about bird watching and how to get started.

Connecting Country's engagement coordinator, Ivan Carter, said central Victoria was something of a hotspot for birdwatchers.

"We know there are many people interesting in getting into birdwatching in our region, and this event will provide a perfect introduction," Mr Carter said.

"We will cover the topics of what equipment you might require, how to identify different birds and where to go to see birds in our region."

The event will be accompanied with a group field session and there will be opportunities for mentoring with experienced bird watchers, allowing participants to refine their skills.

Lisa Dennis An eye-catching art project at Campbells Creek Primary School is bringing a smile to people's faces during the coronavirus pandemic.

Created by students, staff and the wider community, the art project has been inspired by the 'Spoonville Village' craze that has seen spoons decorated as people cropping up in parks, gardens, green spaces and streets all over Melbourne and the rest of the world. The concept aims to nurture the mental health of children and inspire the young and young at heart while they are out doing their daily exercise during lockdown.

The school students painted and repurposed an existing garden bed, put the call out to the entire school community to get creating and just over a week later the empty garden bed has been transformed by 'spoonfuls' into a colourful sea of quirky characters.

Art teacher Ange McDonnell said the project really took off.

"Students at school and doing remote learning have all been encouraged to create a spoon through our Webex art lessons," she said.

Grade five/six teacher Karen James said staff members had also joined the fun.

"Within days of creating the display we were also delighted to have a couple of random spoons appear which were created by local community members," she said.

Principal Rosie Critchley said the spoons had been a source of delight for students and for community members out on their daily walks.

"We have a Dusty Martin spoon decked out in his Tiger colours made by one of our grade three students, Where's Wally, a Zombie, Red Riding Hood, even a dog!

"We hope that people see the display and it makes them smile. We can all do with that at the moment!" Ms Critchley said.

Community members are welcome to add spoons to the display.

Kyneton's community-owned not-forprofit aged-care facility RM Begg is inviting everyone to join in and put some 'fun' into FUNdraising!

Some of the elusive 'Donation Dollars', which RM Begg has affectionately dubbed 'Kyneton's Kindness Coins', have already been put into circulation by the Mint.

The Mint plans to release a total 25 million Donation Dollar coins across Australia over the next three years and RM Begg is asking everyone, especially children, to keep a look out for the gold and green coins and either start a little collection jar at home or drop them in to a participating local business.

"We're not sure how many or how quickly they'll arrive in regional towns, so it's going to be a bit like finding a Willy Wonka 'Golden Ticket'," RM Begg's CEO Meredith Grant said.

"The best bit about this campaign is that after we receive the donated coins, we can spend them locally to support local businesses and circulate the coins back into the community.

"Then, when someone else finds the coins they can re-gift them to us and so on. That way, we can all keep circulating the coins here in our little town."The coins are legal tender but purposefully not of a collectable status. While one dollar

might not seem like much, if everyone donated just one of the Donation Dollars per month, as a population of about 8000 people, Kyneton has the potential to raise and spend an additional $96,000 dollars annually in the community.

"It's a gift that keeps giving, so the buck really is designed to stop here!" Ms Grant quipped.

During school holidays, families are encouraged to decorate a jar and keep an eye out for any of the elusive coins that might find their way into town over the next few months.

The first five people to find one of the special coins and upload a photo of it to RM Begg's Facebook page, will receive a 'Golden Ticket' worth $10, which can be spent at one of the four participating local businesses listed below. A treatment program is underway to protect the Macedon Ranges Shire's 2700 elm trees from a serial pest known as the elm leaf beetle.

The beetle defoliates and weakens mature trees. Trees that have been attacked by the beetle have a distinctive round hole in their leaves.

Council's director of assets and operations, Shane Walden, said while it was impossible to eradicate the beetle, the council had developed a management program to protect significant stands of elms, predominantly in parks and avenues.

"These beautiful European trees have all but disappeared in Europe due to Dutch elm disease," Mr Walden said.

"They are still flourishing in Australia but are prone to elm leaf beetle attack, so we want to protect them."

Treatment generally occurs in Macedon Ranges Shire from September to November.

Methods used include spraying and injecting the soil around the root zone of the tree with low-toxicity insecticide.

This safe and effective method of treating large trees tends to protect them for more than one season.

The council is a member of Friends of the Elms Inc., which maintains a state-wide elm register and helps local government and other bodies to manage threats to elm trees.

A super recovery of sorts The recovery in superannuation continued through August as funds posted their fifth consecutive month of gains amid signs of economic recovery in the September quarter, according to superannuation research house SuperRatings.

"Australia has navigated the pandemic incredibly well compared to other countries, which has helped boost confidence locally," said SuperRatings executive director Kirby Rappell.

"Two key contributors are the relative success of Australian governments in managing the pandemic, and the stability that superannuation provides to our economy and financial system.

"The theme for the second half of 2020 will hopefully be one of continued recovery, however this will likely be unevenly spread across markets and regions. The harsher lockdown conditions in Victoria will have a significant impact on long-term growth, and we expect more ups and downs in the market as the outlook evolves."

According to SuperRatings' data, the rolling one-year return for the median balanced option moved back into positive territory, recording an estimated 0.8 per cent to the end of August, but remains down 2.4 per cent on the start of 2020. Both the growth and capital stable options are estimated to have gained 0.7 per cent over the year to August.

Taking a long-term view, super returns have done an incredible job at accumulating wealth for retirees over a period that includes two major financial and economic crises.

According to SuperRatings' data, since August 2005, a starting balance of $100,000 would now be worth $238,286 for members in a balanced option. For a growth option this would be $239,917. A member with full exposure to Australian shares would have seen their balance growth to $255,883. In contrast, returns on cash would have seen the balance grow to only $157,193.

Primed to lead economic revival Regional Victoria is ideally positioned to help lead the state out of the current economic woes and the Victorian Farmers Federation is is asking the state and federal governments to enable the thinking and policy needed to support growth.

VFF president David Jochinke says despite the challenges agriculture and the regions continue to face, regional Victoria has the opportunity to lead the state's economic recovery as COVID-19 restrictions ease.

"As farmers, we're still awaiting the Agriculture Workers' Code to be implemented and have very real concerns of the impact on our livestock industry in the midst of restrictions placed on our meat processing facilities," Mr Jochinke says.

"We do however have a once in a generation opportunity to revive regional Victoria and help lead the state from its economic woes.

"Of course our health must always remain our top priority and we need to ensure we continue practising COVID-safe measures, but we also need to look forward to the future."

The VFF is calling for a change in government thinking and policy to enable the regions to be a vehicle for economic growth and genuine investment in critical infrastructure.

"Regional Victoria is in a much more advanced stage of COVID recovery than

Melbourne. Now is the opportunity for governments to invest in the regions to help power Victoria's economic recovery," Mr Jochinke says.

"There's an undeniable city and country divide in infrastructure and services such as roads, rail, telecommunications, health and education.

"If can we can get commitment from government to deliver a standard for all Victorians, the liveability of the regions will attract community and economic growth.

"Our message to the Victorian and federal governments is the regions can't wait for Melbourne to catch up. The time to entice growth in the regions and help us recover is now.

"COVID-19 has shown the resilience of regional Victoria. The upside of getting the regions up and running initially is enormous, not just for agriculture, but for Victoria as a whole."

With last weekend as our first weekend that we were not only surrounded by beautiful spring blossoms but also able to step outside of lockdown and into a bubble of friends - we have a fair bit to celebrate and enjoy across the region.

Let’s get outside and soak up some of the glorious spring sunshine. It is a great chance for your body to grab some much-needed vitamin A and D from the sunshine too.

Vitamin D (not really a vitamin but a prohormone) is what the body produces when out in the natural sun.

Having healthy levels of vitamin D is so important for our immune system, mental health and bones. It is also found in oily fish (mackerel, tuna and salmon) and mushrooms. So grab a picnic blanket your favourite five and head outdoors. I have put together some great easily transportable dishes for you to share. And just think for the downside of only being able to see five of your friends, it also means that you only have five people to share this delicious food with. So on a positive note... more cake for you!

This savoury quiche is one of our family favourites and can be made in advance and eaten warm or cold.

Making homemade pastry is a lot easier than you think.

The only ‘rules’ that I have for pastry is to use cold butter, try not to over mix it and always allow a good half an hour for it to cool in the fridge before rolling it out.

For this recipe, make the pastry first. While you’re getting the butter out of the fridge pop your oven on to 180 degrees.

Chocolate and Macadamia Brownies These chocolate brownies are so quick to make and are fudgy and delicious. I add raspberries for a decadent dessert or nuts but you can also add white chocolate buttons too if you like. For a picnic, these are perfect to either bring directly in the tin or for hungry little (and big) hands.

Ingredients 275gm dark chocolate 225gm butter 225gm caster sugar 3 eggs 75gm of plain flour (you can also use GF flour) 50gm Roughly chopped macadamia nuts (or walnuts or fresh raspberries) Preheat oven to 180 degrees and line a slice tin with baking paper. In a heatproof dish break up chocolate and butter and melt in the microwave for 30 second bursts (this should take 1.30 minutes) until the butter and chocolate are melted. Mix together and set aside to allow to cool. Beat eggs and caster sugar with an electric mixer or in a food processor until they are light and fluffy. Stir through the chocolate and butter and then fold through the flour. Add the nuts or raspberries and mix them through the batter. Pour the brownie mix into the prepared tin and bake for 40 minutes or until the brownie is just firm to touch.

Allow to cool in the pan. Dust with icing sugar.

Other quick picnic ideas

If cold chicken curry reminds you of your Great Aunt Mildred then she has just become super cool again. Treat your fellow picnic buddies by scooping out the middle of a medium Vienna loaf or baguette and filling it with cold chicken curry and crunchy lettuce. This can be cut up at the picnic and travels easily - mix 300g chopped smoked chicken fillets, 1/4 cup lowfat sour cream, two tablespoons mayonnaise, one teaspoon lemon zest, plus two tablespoons juice, one tablespoon curry powder, salt and freshly ground black pepper, two spring onions, thinly sliced, 1/4 cup fresh coriander, chopped ½ cup raisins. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.

Savoury Quiche

Shortcrust Pastry Ingredients 1 cup (225gm) SR flour 1 cup (225gm) plain flour 1/2 cup (125gm) cold butter Pinch salt Filling ingredients 1 medium brown onion chopped finely 1 small zucchini sliced and chopped roughly 1 small bunch of parsley chopped finely 3 rashes of bacon chopped roughly (optional) 4 whole eggs, 2 yolks 250ml of cream Salt and pepper 125 grams of grated tasty cheese 1 small bunch of asparagus (if you are not an asparagus fan try broccoli) Method Mix all of these into a food processor bowl until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.

Add 1/2 cup cold water. Mix for a few seconds until the dough all comes together then wrap it up in baking paper and pop it in the fridge. If you really don’t have time making pastry buy the best shortcrust pastry you can buy and use the instructions below after all this is a relaxing picnic dish idea.

While your pastry is chilling out in the fridge you can make your filling. You can add anything you like to a quiche. Make it vegetarian using mushrooms, cooked pumpkin and spinach or keep it plain with onions and bacon. I usually go the whole hog (pardon the pun)

and saute onion and bacon and then add the zucchini, until they are soft. Steam a bunch of fresh asparagus for five minutes then quickly run under cold water, leave drained until you are ready to bake. Leave the cooked filling to one side to cool. In another bowl mix eggs and yolk, a generous cup of grated cheese (I like a bitey, tasty cheddar), cream, salt and pepper.

Now you’re ready to roll out the pastry. Leave it on the baking paper and roll it out to 1cm thickness or thinner if you like. Spray/butter the quiche plate or pie tin and then line with pastry with the baking paper on top.

Press the dough into the tin/plate to make sure it is sitting tight. The paper helps to press around the edges without leaving holes from your fingers in the pastry.

Put your baking beads onto the paper and pop in your oven for 15 mins or until the edges are starting to look golden.

Reduce oven to 160 degrees. Mix cooked veg, eggs and cheese mixture and pour the mixture into the pastry case. Carefully place the asparagus on top and bake for 20-30 mins until it is firm and golden on top. Allow the quiche to cool a little before slicing.

You can also use a muffin tin to make individual quiches which are great for the busy kids who can’t sit down!

If you really, really can’t be bothered with pastry.

Add 50gm of self-raising flour to the milk and egg mix and then pour into a well-greased quiche tin and bake for 40 mins. So easy and so delicious.

How’s your covid calorie count?

Research underway to explore how motivation and environment can trigger over-eating could be relevant to growing numbers of Victorians accumulating ‘COVID calories’ under lockdown, says Professor Moyez Jiwa who is leading the study.

His research will examine the effectiveness of a digital tool called the Future Me App, which reminds people to think about what and why - they are eating and encourages them to be motivated by an avatar of their future, healthier self.

The two-year study is a collaboration between the University of Notre Dame Australia, Archetype Health, Werribee Hospital Foundation, Mercy Hospitals Victoria and the Digital Health Cooperative Research Centre.

“In lockdown, many people are working from their dining room or kitchen table - a place their brains associate with mealtimes - while others in their home may be eating around them,” he says.

“We are often ‘triggered’ by the smell and sight of food, which can be a big feature of the home environment, whether through endless cups of tea and coffee with snacks, or with bored children normally at school in and out of the fridge or pantry, lobbying parents for an edible treat.”

These all add up to temptations to consume food and drinks through boredom rather than because we are actually hungry, he says.

The lockdown and its associated lack of formal exercise opportunities has coincided with cold weather, a rise in home baking and cooking, and continued access to alcohol, with bottle shops doing a roaring trade during lockdown, he adds.

“We are also now working in our comfortable at-home attire so we hardly notice as the elastic on those track pants starts to stretch under the strain of an expanding waistline.”

Professor Jiwa says it’s likely many people will have put on a kilo or more by the time lockdown ends, often through a daily ‘fourth meal’ where snacks make up as many calories as a full meal.

“Snacks are calories we consume outside ‘meal time’ and are often eaten at our desk, in the car, at the computer, in front of the television anywhere where we aren’t mainly focused on the nature of what we are eating, and where food is secondary to whatever else is going on at the time.”

Professor Jiwa says addressing overeating habits can begin when we recognise when we are eating for reasons other than hunger.

“People often eat because they are distressed, bored, dissatisfied, cold, tired, unhappy or worried,” he says.

Tackling overeating should occur when you are ready, he adds, as it’s important to acknowledge the reasons before trying to tackle a problem that might add to anxiety.

“People may already be anxious or worried about their job or their mortgage, their children or their parents. We call that ‘tunnelling’ in science - and people who are ‘tunnelling’ often can’t see the wood for the trees and are not ready to make sacrifices to change outcomes. There is only so much bandwidth available to most of us.”

Energy drinks safety concern

of hydrogen peroxide than would be naturally produced in the body.

"The research indicates that people are drinking diluted hydrogen peroxide when they consume some energy drinks," Professor Bennett says.

"The long-term effects may explain some cancer risk trends in the age group who consume energy drinks," she says.

The levels measured are 15,000-fold higher than the natural levels produced in the body and although the levels permitted by Australian regulators are up to five mg/kg, in many countries, the permitted levels are lower (0-0.5 mg/kg).

"This reflects that toxicity is not well understood, particularly for regular consumption of ~350 ml such as in a commercial beverage," Professor Bennett says.

"We have analysed the levels of hydrogen peroxide in a range of commercial beverages and found that some chemical combinations of ingredients in energy drinks can drive this chemistry.

"We are hoping that our research will lead to new standards for avoiding production of hydrogen peroxide in these types of popular beverages."

Old habits linger Jahne Hope-Williams of The Australasian Yoga Institute has been a yoga teacher for more than 50 years and travelled the world bringing the yoga message to people no matter where she found them.

A warning that energy drinks may contain harmful levels of hydrogen peroxide comes after a Monash-led study of food chemistry found people may be exposed to the toxin when they consume some drinks.

The study, published in Food Chemistry, was led

by Professor Louise Bennett from the Monash School of Chemistry.

Professor Bennett is the course director of Monash University's Master of Food Science and Agribusiness.

The food industry typically uses hydrogen peroxide for sanitisation, and in Australia, residues of up to five mg/kg are allowed in a food or beverage product. The body produces hydrogen peroxide as a signalling molecule and the levels in the range of less than 0.0003 mg/kg, can be inactivated by cellular processes.

In contrast, hydrogen peroxide present in a beverage is stabilised in the acidic environments of the beverage and of the stomach after consumption.

But the study led by Professor Bennett has found that some energy drinks contain higher levels

Rural dementia support lacking

The proportion of people with dementia in rural and regional Australia is consistent with that of metropolitan areas. Access to diagnosis and support, however, is not.

This inequality across the country poses enormous challenges to people with dementia and carers.

CEO of Dementia Australia, Maree McCabe, says considerably fewer healthcare professionals, including general practitioners, practise in rural areas.

Yet, the proportion of people with dementia in rural areas is consistent with that in metropolitan areas (Australia Dementia Report 2013) and is projected to increase equally over coming decades.

By 2050, it is projected that 2.9 per cent of the population living in capital cities will have dementia compared with 3.8 per cent in the rest of Australia.

The challenges for people living with dementia and their supporters are compounded in regional areas by geographic isolation, travel distances and limited services and resources.

Yet, as noted by Dementia Australia, decisions around the policy, planning and design of services tend to be citycentric.

“People living in regional, rural and remote areas deserve to have equitable access to services and be supported to remain living in those areas throughout

their experience with dementia,” Ms McCabe says.

The key concerns and challenges for people with dementia, carers and service providers in regional, rural and remote Australia are significant. Beyond assessment, diagnosis and management of dementia they include opportunities for social engagement and community participation for people with dementia and carers, workforce issues for community, as well as respite and residential aged-care services.

Aged care call All aged-care facilities should have a registered nurse on every shift, to ensure the better health and safety of residents and the highest level of infection control, says the Rural Doctors Association of Australia.

RDAA has renewed its call in a second submission provided to the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

RDAA also continues to call for the better integration and collaboration of aged care with general practice, including with practice nurses and administration.

“Having a registered nurse onsite at an agedcare facility, around the clock, is essential,” RDAA president, Dr John Hall, says.

“COVID-19 has shone a light on the need for aged-care facilities to have increased ‘in house’ nursing and infection control capacity - but this is just as critical in non-COVID times too.

Whole grain benefits analysed Research collating evidence from 25 individual studies of 2250 participants worldwide has found that increasing whole grain consumption may improve health.

Published in the Journal of the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the findings suggest that although whole grain choices are recommended, there’s a place for all grain foods in the diet.

Dr Skye Marshall from Nutrition Research Australia explains: “According to our research, provided the majority of your grain intake comes from whole grain sources like wholemeal bread, oats, whole grain breakfast cereals, brown rice or wholemeal pasta, consuming refined grains like white rice or pasta will not be detrimental to heart health on its own.”

Although overall there was insufficient evidence to support increasing whole grain intake for reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, when researchers analysed by the different types of whole grains, there were significant benefits for certain varieties.

“We found that whole grain oats significantly

decreased total and LDL cholesterol - the type of cholesterol that plays a role in the development of heart disease. We also found beneficial outcomes for brown rice on triglycerides, a type of blood fat also linked to elevated heart disease risk.”

Extensive observational research supports regular consumption of whole grain foods and reduced risk of heart disease, with researchers suggesting more clinical trials are needed over longer periods of time and different population groups.

Phillip Scoles' comments about the Little Ice Age of the 1300s ('Warmer equals wetter', Opinions, September 15) prompted me to have another listen to a recent Science Show program on ABC Radio National.

I recommend that anyone interested in this unusual climatic period make an effort to hear this 12-minute commentary by Johan Rockstrom, Professor of Earth Sciences, Sweden.

Just google ABC Science Show Johan Rockstrom part 3. It made me sit up and pay attention.

The PM has given the green light to a gas-led recovery when 99 per cent of the scientists said long before Paris, and almost 20 years before Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth in 2006, that to reduce carbon pollution to safe levels, the remaining fossil fuels must stay in the ground.

Pro-gas lobbyists are telling us that we need a constant electricity supply and "renewables won't cut it". I would argue that in using a combination of renewables plus pumped hydro to elevated reservoirs in the form of naturally-occurring lakes and basins, we would have the 'batteries' for a renewable-powered grid.

Also, if we embrace this 'gas-led recovery', it is reported that there will be a massive investment of taxpayer funds in a large, gas-fired power station, and a pipeline to go practically right across Australia. This is not to mention that there will be years of time lag before any of this can come into effect. Wind turbines and solar farms are relatively simple and cheap, and can be implemented much more quickly. It seems that right here is the argument for a 'renewable-led recovery'. Let's stop talking about it and just do it!

It seems that a big name supermarket and bottleshop is back on the table for Castlemaine. How will this square with our slow, local, foodie and sustainable image for residents and tourists alike?

Do we want to be just like other towns, with self-serve checkouts and brands with many food miles attached, wrapped up in lots of plastic?Our town is vibrant with a unique coffee, food and artistic culture. A giant 'more of the same' supermarket and bottle shop does not fit well with this, and will detract from our uniqueness.

Do more research Phillip Scoles ('Warmer equals wetter', Opinions, September 15), it appears that you are using a documentary and a website as your points of reference in countering the depth of scientific rigour that has led to a vast body of evidence to the contrary of your claims about climate change.

For starters, you could probably do without the snide reference to 'climate warriors', whose major 'crime' would seem to be the fight for the continuation of the human race, so regardless of whether they are right or not, deserve to be treated more respectfully.

Yes, there will be regions of the earth that will benefit from warming due to enhanced cropping, liveability etc., but there are also vast regions of Earth filled with millions of people that will become uninhabitable or close to it, either becoming too warm, having too extreme and frequent weather events, or inundated as sea level rises, what would you say to those people?

And yes, there have been bad fires in the past (a quarter of Victoria burned in 1851, yet area burned is just one of the many markers for bushfire severity and danger), but are you also accounting for our greatly enhanced ability to manage risk, and to respond to fires now vs the middle of last century?

I'd propose doing a great deal more research if you want to take on the overwhelming evidence presented in the name of science, including every scientific body worth their name in Australia, and refute those that have spent decades of their life on the topics at hand and arrived at a significantly different conclusion to you.

I saw it on the TV! Peter Ryan, Castlemaine I am surprised that the Express seems to have allowed the well-and-truly-dead climate change argument to have opened up again.

I find it extraordinary that your correspondent ('Warmer equals wetter', Opinions, September 15) is given any column space at all when he bases his opinion only on a TV documentary, while he blithely ignores the plethora of proper scientific studies that clearly and definitively debunk the "coming mini-ace age" conspiracy.

The other points in his letter seem to me to be equally spurious and ill-founded.

If we really must reopen this debate and I don't believe that we should, because the case is quite closed - then please let in be on rational grounds, not just because someone saw something on TV!

In defence of cats Dimity Pettifer, Castlemaine I am tired of the constant criticism of cats.

Kya Moore's complaint that the lack of birdsong in her garden is partly due to people not keeping cats in at night doesn't make sense ('Heartbreaking silence', Opinions, September 15). Cats do not catch birds at night.

I have three cats, all from shelters, including the wonderful MAWS. All are let out during the day, under supervision, and all are locked in at night.

My garden, in central Castlemaine, is full of birdsong, from magpies to parrots to blackbirds. I feed about six parrots every day and my cats just look at them.

Unrestrained dogs do just as much, if not more, damage to wildlife and other creatures, from killing koalas to mauling kangaroos and sheep. More needs to be written about the killing habits of domestic dogs.

Be aware and care Gay Sanders, Kyneton I agree with Peter Lloyd ('Unacceptable carnage', Opinions, September 8), the beauty of our wildlife is profound and breathtaking!

Nothing gives us the right to kill these incredible creatures on the roads with our cars and then just drive off leaving them to suffer and die.

Dismayed at treatment Judy Rice, Adelaide I write with concern about the disregard for employee mental health and wellbeing in the lead up to and during the recent organisational restructure of the Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

I watched with dismay at the treatment of long-term employees of the council.

They changed from happy, resourceful, hard-working staff, to stressed, frustrated, unemployed people, with little or no explanation or reasons for change. The unit was recognised in the community for its excellence, now most of the long-time employees are gone.

There has been irreparable damage done to them and the community by this.

Please explain TW Bird, Lancefield Could Macedon Ranges Shire councillors now dip into their bag of transparency and explain to ratepayers (remember us, we're the ones who elected you to represent us and we also pay the wages of the MRSC staff) why there has been such a high turnover of council staff in the past three years?

Adapt regulations Hans Paas, Castlemaine We all need local councils to 'step up for hospitality' in the wake of a relaxation of regional COVID-19 restrictions announced last week.

Pubs, restaurants and cafes have been thrown a lifeline by the state government in allowing more patrons to be served outside.

This is the moment when local councils need to adapt regulations to help the hardhit hospitality industry re-open to the greatest extent permitted.

This might involve fast-tracking permits or extending existing permits to allow venues to take full advantage of the reduced restrictions. With the right help, some businesses that have been teetering on the edge of oblivion can be saved. That means saving jobs and maybe even some job creation. Flexibility in the administration and interpretation of local laws does not come naturally to local government, but if they remember that 'we are all in this together' they might just help save some ratepaying local businesses survive.

The gas companies could be rubbing their hands with glee as PM Morrison is virtually saying he will do their job for them by building a gas-fired power station if they avoid it, as they know the economics don't make sense.

PM Morrison is not alone in subsiding fossil fuel companies ... what happened to Capitalism?

The American taxpayer, as reported by the investigative journalist Antonia Juhasz when interviewed by Phillip Adams on ABC's Late Night Live, subsidises the American oil industry to the tune of $5 trillion per year. That trillion is not a printer's error!

The problem due to deliberate overproduction by agreement of President Trump, Putin in Russia and the UAE. In Europe, where oil companies by law have to declare their true incomes, huge companies like BP and Shell recognise climate change and have announced their plans to move to renewables.

PM Morrison has said that renewables cannot be relied upon. During the Christmas period of 2019, all the Bellarine Peninsula lost its coal-fired electricity supply for a night, and every household got a cheque for $80 to pay for freezer goods lost.

That night the South Australian Tesla battery, powered by solar, exported $1 million of electricity to the eastern states.

The main groups that fear renewables are those fossil fuel companies who will be left with stranded assets.

Following recent announcements from the state government, Goldfields Libraries are excited to once again be able to offer a pick-up service for reserved items.

Through 'Reserve + Collect', library members can reserve items online or over the phone and collect them at their local library when they're ready.

While libraries still remain closed to the public for the time being, team members at Goldfields Libraries are excited about this first step and look forward to seeing some familiar faces.

"We're thrilled to be able to see our patrons again, and to get our collection moving in the community," said Goldfields Libraries CEO Mark Hands.

"It was really tough to close the doors again in August, so it's nice to give everyone the opportunity to get some fresh materials."

In the days before closure, almost a third of the library's collection was borrowed.

"That equated to around 90,000 books, DVDs and CDs in the hands of happy library members!" Mr Hands said.

"It really just shows how much the community values libraries."

New cricket coach for Riddell

Tennis club awarded $10,000

Riddell Cricket Club has appointed experienced allrounder Heath Brown as coach for the next two seasons.

The Bombers will play in the Johnstone Shield division after being relegated from McIntyre Cup. Brown has been with the club for 10 years, and anticipates further improvement from some of the club's promising young players, and there is a change of a couple of new recruits coming along to add depth to the lineup.

Gisborne District Cricket Association is hopeful the season may be able to begin in late October - early November with a series of one-day fixtures.

Much will depend on the status of the coronavirus pandemic.

Castlemaine Lawn Tennis Club aims to foster the development of junior tennis players.

Castlemaine Lawn Tennis Club is set to receive a $10,000 boost as part of the ANZ Community Grant program.

The local club was one of 20 lucky organisations to receive funding support.

ANZ Community Grant ambassador and tennis champ, Dylan Alcott, surprised club members with the news over a Zoom call, enabling them to meet their tennis hero in a different landscape.

The grants help support and develop local tennis clubs who deliver the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots program.

For the past three years, ANZ has awarded $600,000 of grants funds to deserving tennis communities across Australia.

In addition to receiving a $10,000 ANZ Community Grant, Castlemaine Lawn Tennis Club will receive merchandise, equipment, signage and access to a local ANZ specialist to help them with their finances.

Club committee member Rob Phillips

said the grant would be used to build a brand-new hitting wall.

"This will allow tennis players at all levels to improve their game and have an opportunity to train without relying on a partner," he said.

"Often many club members are unable to find a hitting partner and are left with the option to hit against a wire fence, which is inadequate. The new hitting wall facility will help enhance the skills of players across the community."

With 2020 becoming one of the most challenging years for Australians, the reward comes at the right time for the club, which is looking forward to reopening its doors to the community.

ANZ district manager Rob Collins said they were excited to present Castlemaine Lawn Tennis Club with this ANZ Tennis Hot Shots community grant.

"The club is a wonderful part of our community and a great supporter of ongoing grassroots tennis," he said.

Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley said this was a fantastic opportunity allowing Castlemaine Lawn Tennis Club to make some exciting changes and provide their members with the best experience possible.

"We look forward to seeing Castlemaine Lawn Tennis Club prosper and we'd like to thank ANZ for its ongoing support of tennis in our community and the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots program," Mr Tilley said.

ANZ Tennis Hot Shots is Tennis Australia's official development program with a record 702,509 children between three and 12 years of age playing ANZ Tennis Hot Shots in 2018/19.

Progress for Trentham Sportsground

A new masterplan for the Trentham Sportsground has been adopted and designs for a pavilion redevelopment endorsed.

Hepburn Shire Council CEO Evan King said the masterplan for the sportsground site paved the way for a range of development opportunities.

"Football, netball and cricket are the sporting and social lifeblood of many towns and Trentham is no different," Mr King said.

"This masterplan has identified a range of ways we can work towards making the sportsground a better place to play, train and watch sport, as well as use the space for more passive recreation such as cycling, walking and jogging."

by Hepburn Shire Council.

With coronavirus lockdown restrictions finally eased, many district golfers finally had smiles on their faces on Saturday, returning to competition events rather than playing social rounds, or remaining at home.

Masks were still required, as was social distancing, and weather conditions were generally good for golf at different courses.

Drainage, levelling and filling works have been taking place at the Romsey course and park, and grass has grown quickly.

It was pleasing to see a couple of the local 'old timers' return to the fairways after taking a winter recess.

Despite some testing wind changes, some excellent scores were returned, the Scott Williams - Mitch Atlas pairing leading the way with 42 points. Runners-up were Williams and Davie Kenney with 41.

The top eight qualifiers in the annual W.E. Tom four-ball best-ball event will play quarter finals in a fortnight.

MEDAL OF MEDALLISTS It was Medal of Medallists Day

at Lancefield, with carts back in use after a break of some weeks due to soft fairways.

Gavin Woodward emerged with the Medal of Medallists award with a round of 85-13-72.

There were some good scores in the stableford grade events.

Barry Brennan took out A grade with 36 points, and Mark Andrews and Wayne Mee were the respective B and C grade winners, each with 39 points.

At Woodend, the September monthly medal winner was Gary Delaney.

He held off some strong challengers to win by a shot with 86-21-65.

BUSY AT TRENTHAM An excellent field of 71 players took part in the mixed stableford at Trentham on Saturday.

Bradley Nugent lowered his handicap by chalking up 42 points from a handicap of 32.

John Smithwick returned 39 points, Leif Louwen-Skovdam 38, and Darin McLean, Patricia Mann and Brenton Payne came in with 37.

Brian Cross 39 points, led the way from Colin Wilson and Rhonda Holcombe on Thursday.

It's back to grade competitions and vouchers at Trentham as from this Thursday.

Horse racing returns to Kyneton today (Tuesday) with a nine-event program.

The first event is the Hy-Gain Maiden over 1100 metres at 1pm, with ninth final race being the Reine Happy 7 Wins in a Season BM58 Handicap over 1450m at 5pm.

The final race recognises the outstanding feat of Reine Happy, the star galloper from Kyneton trainer George Osborne's stable, winning seven races in the 2019-20 season.

Osborne has seven runners entered in today's program, including first starter Zuiichi.

The following race meetings at Kyneton are on Sunday, October 4, and Tuesday, October 13.

The local club's feature event, the time honoured Kyneton Cup, is on Wednesday, November 4, the day after the Melbourne Cup.
