Mr Irvine said the board planned to go out into the market to identify a suitable partner in the next three to six months. "We've got about a year to a year and a half to shore up our position," he said.

Kyneton aged-care provider RM Begg may be unable to continue operating as an independent facility next year as it faces increased year-on-year operating losses. The community owned not-for-profit facility reported an operating loss of $1.5M for the last financial year, up from a loss of $600,000 in 2020. Board chair Phillip Irvine acknowledged losses over the past four years, coupled with increasing operating costs, meant the board was forced to consider a merger with another operator. "The board's commitment is to do
everything we can to uphold RM Begg's vision and the great service that is unquestionably the best aged-care service in the area," Mr Irvine said. "We're not trading insolvent, we're trading at a loss, but we can't continue to sustain these losses driving us deeper into debt." RM Begg has received a generous response from the community to fundraising efforts but the organisation would welcome a white knight to rescue it from its dire financial position. Things got a little creepy on the streets of Castlemaine last Friday. Halloween-themed 'ghouls' were out in force, strategically positioned at the front of the National Australia Bank on the town's main drag, and dancing to the tunes of Michael Jackson's Thriller. Capturing the attention of passing motorists and media, the Zombie Apocalypse being staged on Barker Street was a demonstration organised by local climate activist groups calling for more effective policies to address climate change. Rolling enthusiastically with the Thrillerthemed dance moves, one of Friday's demonstrators, Castlemaine's Bernard Tonkin, was also focused on the rolling over of super funds, away from those
whose investment portfolios continue to finance the fossil fuel sector – and was keen to encourage others to do likewise. "People can join a collective super rollover, a boycott of the major fossil financing funds, on November 28th," he said. "We're all rolling over together. "If you can't join us this rollover you can join us in the next rollover or just become a supporter." Friday's apocalyptic-point making was timed both for Halloween on Sunday and for the start of the world's COP26 Climate Summit in Glasgow. "We're here to tell the National Australia Bank to stop funding fossil fuels," Castlemaine's Emma Dubuc said. "The UN has said we are now facing a Code Red for Humanity and we have to, right here and now, stop digging and
exploring for fossil fuels including coal and gas. "A lot of the big banks support fossil fuels. "We need to make sure everybody looks at what they're putting their money into, and that's a good way to help make change, to bank with banks that are going to do the right thing for the future and finance renewables, and looking to super as well because a lot of superannuation funds are actually funding the fossil fuel industry. "You can join a local group, write letters to MPs, so many ways that people can help. "It gives us hope to dance together, and bring the community together, so we're going to start a Dance for the Climate group. Hopefully every week at the Botanical Gardens."

Hepburn Shire Council has scrapped library fines for overdue returns. Mayor Cr Lesley Hewitt said fining people for not bringing items back to the library in time only discouraged people from using the library. “Public libraries like ours are about encouraging as many people as possible to use their range of services and access to valuable information,” Cr Hewitt said. “We know sometimes life is busy and it is easy to overlook simple things like returning a few books – fining people for this mean they are less likely to keep engaging with library and that is not the outcome we want. “There are better ways to make sure items are returned to the library and the experience of other libraries who have done this shows you are more likely to get items returned if there are not fines waiting." From October 18, Hepburn Libraries stopped imposing fees for late returns, and instead limited the borrowing of members until items are returned. Lost or damaged books will still have to be paid for, as is the case now. For people with existing fines, the council has decided to run a Forgiving Tree – fines will be erased with the donation of non-perishable food, which will then be donated to the food banks across the shire. The council ran a similar program in the past that resulted in more than $3000 worth of food being donated for people who needed it most.

Woolworths Kyneton will launch a Local Community Food Drive to help deliver food relief to people in need in the lead up to Christmas. The week-long initiative will kick-off on November 3, and customers are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items into the specially marked trolley in store. Donated items will be distributed either directly to a store’s local community food relief charity partner, or via one of Woolworths’ major food relief partners. Woolworths Kyneton has also committed to donating a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables to the drive and their local community’s food relief charity. Items identified by local charities as the core range of essential food relief items needed by individuals and families include: breakfast cereals, pasta, rice and instant noodles, coffee and tea bags, canned fish or meat, canned fruit and vegetables, soups and spreads. Customers can donate in-store at Woolworths Kyneton to the Woolworths Local Community Food Drive from November 3-9.

Henry O’Sullivan is discovering Macedon Ranges’ creatives and what makes them tick. The Kyneton YouTuber explores peoples’ creative pursuits while discussing strategies to build positive mental health through his channel Crafting Good Health. “The goal was to create a space that fosters creativity, destigmatises mental health conversations, and showcases some of our amazing local crafters,” he told the Express. Whether he’s tearing up phonebooks to make recycled paper or creating his own kokedama, Henry is eager to traverse new territory with a good sense of humour. Working shoulder to shoulder with crafters, he moves with ease between the crafting projects at hand to the lesser broadcast subjects in life surrounding mental health. Henry has spoken to 'freak bike creators' about the importance of mindfulness, to face-painters about the realities of post-partum depression, to knitters about creating adventure, and gardeners about resilience. Some of those to share his platform include Ian from Oxart Pottery, Rhain from the Old Auction House Kyneton, Heather from Art Weaver Studio, and the Story Costumer from Trentham. “I started this video series as a way to have conversations with other people about mental health and each other’s passions, and it became a learning experience in many ways I didn’t expect,” Henry said. After coping through Melbourne’s lockdown of 2020, Henry and his partner Angela purchased a property in Kyneton and moved there, excited for change. For Henry, it was a return to the Ranges

The move was a chance for him to find his creative project. “I had found the Melbourne lockdowns difficult, socially isolating as I couldn’t connect with others, and restrictive in regards to creating the things that give me joy,” he said. The 29-year-old teacher said everyone's life had been somehow affected by mental health, but often the stigma around talking about how we felt prevented us from sharing with the people around us. "Meeting together to play a game, creating food to share with others, organising a time to try new experiences – whatever our passions are they can be a conduit to pro-
vide us the opportunity to talk about mental health and support the people around us," he said. “One of my favourite questions to ask someone I meet for the first time is: “What are you passionate about?”. Hearing people explain what they enjoy creating and why, is a privilege that never fails to excite me." Events fund opens
The state government has announced local councils, community groups and small-scale event organisers can apply for grants under the $1 million Regional Community Events Fund. The fund opened yesterday with grants of up to $25,000 available for small-scale events and festivals held across the state. Eligible events could include community festivals, sporting carnivals and arts and cultural events. Announcing the fund in Kyneton last Friday, Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said rural and regional Victoria played host to some of the state’s most vibrant community events. "This funding will help organisers get back on their feet to plan more events for local communities as the state opens up,” she said. "Kyneton is known for its diverse calendar of events, including the Daffodil and Art Festival as well as regular markets and music festivals." Support will go towards a range of costs associated with hosting events in a COVIDsafe environment including for density limit management, record keeping, good hygiene practices and marketing. The new fund is part of the government’s targeted support for local communities to come together safely to help Victoria recover from the pandemic. The

Man charged
Detectives from the Central Goldfields Crime Investigation Unit have charged a man following an alleged car theft and subsequent petrol thefts that occurred in central Victoria earlier this month. Investigators have been told a white 2010 Peugeot station wagon was allegedly stolen from a property in Fitzgeralds Close, Castlemaine on October 10. It is alleged the stolen Peugeot was later involved in petrol drive-offs at petrol stations in Bendigo and Taradale. The stolen vehicle was located burnt out in Castlemaine on October 14. A 31-year-old Bendigo man has been charged with 50 charges, including theft of motor vehicles, thefts, criminal damage by fire, commit offences on bail, breach bail conditions and drive while disqualified. He has been remanded to appear at Bendigo Magistrates Court on November 15.

Fireball at Langley
A man aged in his 20s suffered only minor injuries when his car crashed and burst into flames at Langley last Friday morning. Emergency services rushed to the scene on Kyneton-Redesdale Road about 6.30am to find a sedan travelling south had left the road, skidding about 50 metres along the verge before crashing through fences and bursting into flames. The driver was treated at the scene by paramedics for a foot injury. Firefighters from Langley-Barfold and Kyneton brigades had to contend with high winds gusting at times to 80 kilometres an hour and the threat of branches falling from nearby trees. The busy arterial road was closed for about an hour.
‘Perfect storm’ for roads
Police are patrolling Victoria’s major roads and highways across the Melbourne Cup week as travel restrictions continue to ease. Operation Compass will run statewide in two phases, October 29 to November 2, and from November 5 to November 7. Police are anticipating an influx of travel to regional areas and tourism hotspots. They’re warning drivers increased traffic volumes combined with long hours behind the wheel and a deterioration in driving skills could be a recipe for disaster. “The coming fortnight is a perfect storm on our roads," Assistant Commissioner Road Policing, Glenn Weir said. "Many of us haven’t driven long distances for months. Our skills have deteriorated and there’s going to be an enormous amount of traffic as people escape the city and head to regional Victoria. “Victoria Police will be going all out to keep people safe. You will see highway
patrol cars, you will see drug and alcohol buses, you will see our motorbikes and you will see our frontline patrol units." Motorists are urged to slow down and take extra care with roads to be at their busiest in months. Following the recent easing of restrictions in regional Victoria there were at least four fatal collisions in five days and several injury collisions where drink driving was suspected. Operation Compass will see police targeting speed, distraction, fatigue and impaired driving in high-risk areas. They will be highly visible on major arterials including the Princes Freeway, Calder Freeway, Hume Highway and Western Highway. The operation will involve all available personnel across Victoria Police including regional Highway Patrols, plus State Highway Patrol, Heavy Vehicle Unit, Road Policing Drug and Alcohol Section and Public Order Response Team.

Much of the region's live music muscle will be headed to Castlemaine this month for a debut three-day music conference aimed at helping the industry rebound from COVID-19. To be staged at Castlemaine's Phee Broadway Theatre, Senior Citizens Club, Town Hall and Theatre Royal over Friday to Sunday, November 19- 21, the inaugural Gold Sounds conference will bring together the region's musos and other music industry professionals and will feature key speakers from the local area and Melbourne. “The Regional Music Development program is designed to lead COVID-19 recovery efforts while addressing the needs of musicians, music professionals and music communities,” regional manager at Music Victoria, Sarah DeBorre said. The new conference is part of the Regional Music Development pilot program funded by Creative Victoria and delivered in partnership by Music Victoria and Regional Arts Victoria with support from Mount Alexander Shire Council. Music Victoria’s regional music coordinator for Mount Alexander Shire, Fionna Allan, said the conference was designed to create a lasting legacy and empower the regional music industry with all it needed to recover from the pandemic's impacts. "We hope that it will strengthen connections across the shire, and beyond," Ms Allan said. Set to start with a venues day, the threeday event aims to unite all of the shire's live music venues while inviting venues in neighbouring areas including Macedon Ranges, Hepburn Shire and City of Greater Bendigo. “The venues day will be hosted round-
table style and look to upskill our live music venues and their staff in key areas,” Ms Allan said. “Friday afternoon will take a youth-based focus bringing together the Mount Alexander Shire FReeZA committee and neighbouring committees in a short series of professional development sessions, and a panel session from touring artists, curated by young people.” Saturday of the conference will feature programming geared to both regional artists and industry. “The day will kick off with a keynote address from acclaimed artist Liz Stringer, and will include panel sessions covering topics such as access, inclusion and safe spaces, artist promotion, and taking care of mental health," Ms Allan said. “The day will finish off with a keynote address from musician Jen Cloher, and there are still more speakers to be announced. “The conference will be rounded out on Sunday by a series of dedicated invitationonly songwriting workshops, which we are really proud to be delivering in partnership with APRA/AMCOS. Kyneton local Kate Coleman started the healthy eating and environment campaign, No Packet November, back in 2017 after noticing how many packets were in kids lunchboxes. YIMBY is calling for experienced and enthusiastic composters to come on board and join The YIMBY (Yes in My Backyard) team. They’ve been busy behind the scene since receiving funding to roll out phase two of the YIMBY composting trial. “This is an exciting milestone towards creating a truly local system for dealing with our food waste,” says Joel Meadows, compost consultant for the YIMBY project. Booster shots open COVID-19 booster shots will soon be available to Australians aged 18 and over who have received two doses at least six months ago. Vaccines will be available for eligible people from November 8, following advice from Australia’s vaccine experts; the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation and approval from Australia’s medicines regulator; the Therapeutic Goods Administration. The government has accepted ATAGI’s advice that the Comirnaty (Pfizer) vaccine is recommended for the booster dose, irrespective of the primary COVID-19 vaccine used. The booster shot is not mandatory, however, it provides further protection against COVID-19. Those first eligible for a booster, based on when they completed their two-dose course, will be people in high priority groups who were prioritised early in the rollout of the vaccine program. This includes Australians aged 50 and over, residents of aged-care and disability facilities, people with underlying medical conditions, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Is-

lander Australians, and people at increased occupational risk of COVID-19. The booster program will roll out directly to people living in Residential Aged Care Facilities and people with a disability through an in-reach program. Frontline workers are strongly encouraged to book in to get a booster dose, if six months has passed since their second dose. The Australian Government will consider the possibility of other vaccines being used for booster shots if successful applications are submitted to the TGA, and pending advice from ATAGI. The Pfizer COVID-19 booster shots are free and will be available through the primary healthcare network and state and territory vaccination hubs. Australians will be able to book and receive their booster doses from November 8. Although vaccines are the best defence against COVID-19, Australians are reminded to continue implementing other safety measures to reduce their risk of contracting the virus. Physical distancing, hand washing, wearing a face mask, and following other public health measures continue to be important for public safety.
Lancefield plan approved The first part of a development plan for Lancefield has been approved. The development area includes land at 128 and 132 High Street and 69 Park Street, ranging in sizes and lots. A two-stage subdivision is planned for 128 High Street, creating four lots in the first stage and six lots in the second stage. For 132 High Street, a two-stage subdivision will create two lots in stage one and three lots in stage two. A five-stage low-density subdivision at 69 Park Street will create a total of 19 lots in total. The application attracted two objections raising concerns including bushfire risk, traffic outcomes, lot density, stormwater issues, development contributions, and amenity impact. An elderly resident of North Woodend was lucky to escape uninjured when she crashed her car into a neighbour's garage last Wednesday evening. Woodend Fire Brigade was called to the scene about 6.15pm with the Woodend captain, who lived nearby, first on scene. Having seen the extent of the damage, the captain called for police, ambulance and SES support. He checked with the owners of the property and then the car, which was unattended and had been locked. Ambulance was next on scene and went to check on the driver, followed by the arrival of police and Woodend pumper. Woodend volunteers checked that the scene was safe, as police organised a tow truck to remove the car. One of the CFA volunteers was a builder who was able to check the damage and deem that the wall would be safe to remove the car. CFA volunteers had to do some work on the wall before the car was safely extracted. SES then worked to reinforce the wall to ensure no further damage would result.

Eve Lamb As the state's live entertainment sector comes back to life, Castlemaine locals have a unique chance to enjoy some top-shelf live music while supporting a good cause for the region's wildlife. A classical afternoon concert taking place in Castlemaine on Saturday November 13 will feature music performed by Melbourne's Zephyr String Ensemble and MSO principal bassoon Jack Schiller, and will raise funds to build the new Central Victoria Wildlife Hospital near Daylesford. Among the organisers, Deb Shnookal lives at Hepburn Springs but plays music with the Castlemaine cello group and cares deeply about the region's wildlife and their vulnerability to bushfire. Deb used her contacts in classical music circles to help organise the benefit concert at Castlemaine's Northern Arts Hotel, and a similar concert in Daylesford, in a move particularly prompted by the impacts of the horrific Black Summer bushfires on the state's wildlife. "We wanted to launch the fundraising appeal for the hospital with a bang," she told the Express last week. "A special feature of the concert will be a quirky new piece of Australian music for solo bassoon, The Song of the Wombat, that captures a young wombat’s short bouts of energetic playfulness between long daytime snoozes. "It was especially composed for a recent resident of the Hepburn Wildlife Shelter, a young wombat named Momo who has now been released back into the wild.

"It will be performed by Jack Schiller, principal bassoon of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra." Deb said the Zephyr String Ensemble was a group of young, professional musicians from Melbourne and along with Jack they would perform works from a range of composers including Mozart, Hildegard of Bingen, a lovely quartet for bassoon and strings by Francois Devienne, some Martinu madrigals for violin and viola and a folk set or two. "We want the concert to be a celebration of the return to life, the return to music, and also a celebration of the fantastic wildlife we do have in this region – and also to make people aware of how precious they are," she said. "There's a real challenge at the moment just to get proper vet care for injured wildlife in the central Victorian area. "The hospital was an initiative of the Hepburn Wildlife Shelter, run by Gayle Chappell and Jon Rowdon, both environmental scientists who have treated and cared for hundreds of every species of wildlife, from microbats to large macropods (kangaroos). "They envisage the hospital as an asset for all the shelters in central Victoria." The project has got off to a good start with a $100,000 donation from two local residents, a further $100,000 or so raised in 2020 along with $300,000 in anticipated grants. The upcoming concert is programmed to begin at 3pm with double-vax proof needed to attend and tickets available online through TryBooking.

The Woodend Community Farmers Market is celebrating its 10th birthday on Saturday. The market is introducing a new 'Town Crier' in the form of Barry McDonald who will be there to announce events and happenings within the market. The Macedon Ranges Sustainability Group, Macedon Ranges Shire Council and landcare will have stalls to introduce people to the principles of sustainable living in lieu of MRSG's cancelled Sustainable Living Festival. The market is all about supporting small farmers and producers while giving people access to fresh, seasonal food in a sustainable way. It is celebrating these principles by offering each of the stallholders who are members of MRSG a free site on the day. Organisers are also excited about welcoming Melbourne patrons back to the regional market. These visitors not only spend time at the market, but in the Macedon Ranges, which benefits the local visitor economy. The market has operated safely over the course of the pandemic with strict COVID protocols in place and will continue to do so on Saturday in accordance with the restrictions and rules of the day. The Buttlejorrk Artists group is one of the longest-running artist collectives in the area and will present its 45th exhibition in November. It began in 1976 as a group of potters wishing to share their knowledge and exhibit their work together. Travel the clay trail Ceramic artists from across the Mount Alexander and Hepburn Shires will open their studio doors as part of this month's Central Victorian Clay Trail. The Central Victorian Clay Trail is one roadmap that will lead you on a journey of discovery to the inner sanctums of the region’s ceramicists and help blow away the lockdown cobwebs! This year 14* ceramics studios will open to the public over the weekend of November 13-14 offering a glimpse into the working life of a potter. Visitors will explore the individual processes artists use to take clay through to
its final state. There will be a wide range of styles and techniques on show, from sculptural work to tableware and everything in between. The event is part of The Australian Ceramics Association’s annual open studio program and makers from around the country are participating. Among the Mount Alexander artists to feature will be Ian McColl from Taradale, Ann Ferguson, Fluxed Earth, Dee Hutchison from Castlemaine, Andrea Ebsworth and Tracey Koolen from Maldon, Felicity Ceramics from Muckleford, Angie Robinson from Walmer and Chris Johnston and
Sarah Koschak from Newstead. Hepburn artists include Minna Graham of Musk Vale, Angie Izard of Porcupine Ridge, Kim Haughie of Springmount and Chandra Paul of Clunes. All studios will follow COVID guidelines, including QR and manual check in and adhering to numbers of visitors allowed in the studio. The studios will be open from 10am-4pm each day. Castlemaine Steiner School has turned the first sod on its $1.28 million Science and Technology Lab. Construction on the major project is set to formally get under way tomorrow, November 3. The project has been made possible thanks to a capital grant from the federal government and will see the construction of a state-of-the-art science, technology and computer studies space. Castlemaine Steiner School administration and marketing officer Rachael Pearce said they were excited to expand their buildings to include the dedicated Science and Technology Lab for senior students. "The space will include universal access toilets and a 'hang out' area for our class seven and eight students. The building has been designed by Life Design Architecture and the tender for construction has been awarded to Searle Brothers Builders," Ms Pearce said. The new building has been designed to be in keeping and balance with the school's existing architecture and cater to the school's sustainable philosophies harnessing plenty of natural light and using minimal energy. It will be warmed by thermal heat and also feature solar power.

Health advisory scrapped Macedon Ranges Shire Council has scrapped its Health and Wellbeing Advisory Committee. The independent community-based committee formed in 2014 to advise on community health and wellbeing but has declined in membership. Speaking at council's meeting last week, Cr Mark Ridgeway said the move to dissolve the advisory committee was not taken lightly. He said it was the considered decision of the remaining members. "Considerable effort and significant resourcing has been put into the committee over the last few years in an effort to keep it operating and bring it up to an optimal level," he said. "Despite all that effort and work, we were unable to achieve that and still experienced a

Committee members have expressed support for continuing their engagement with the council by other means, such as involvement in deliberative engagement or community consultation processes, or as subject matter experts.

As a resident of Romsey, I agree entirely with the letter from your correspondent LR Latimer of Woodend in last week’s Midland Express ('Underlying problem', Opinions, October 26). Some of the large commercial properties in the town have been vacant for years, coinciding with a period of considerable population growth. It doesn’t make sense. Following construction of the new roundabout, the historic Romsey Hotel now sits at an improved site overlooking newly grassed landscape – surely a viable and attractive asset for someone to operate. Likewise the old supermarket is on a site of considerable value in terms of trading potential. I agree with the suggestion from your correspondent, that the owners of valuable but vacant properties be penalised if they do not make an effort to sell and/or improve sites such as these. They create a negative impact for residents and visitors alike.

I drive past the Edgecombe Road development site often. I don’t like the view of gorse and willows that are prominent across the empty paddocks. But now I dislike even more the prospect of Maccas and a large service station filling my view. Doug McIver’s letter ('Consider the consequences', Opinions, October 19) prompted me, with his reminder that the area is flood prone, to visualise a wetlands along Post Office Creek. Wouldn’t that look great? Imagine a landscape of native trees, wetlands grasses and bushes flourishing around a chain of ponds. There could be gravelled paths meandering though this extended natural riparian garden where walkers could listen to pobblebonk frogs ‘pobblebonking’ as they do happily and other native fauna would also be attracted to these indigenous plantings. Cars could enter and park off the entry ramp that joins the freeway. It would be a calm respite for travellers and locals. The manna gums along the Freeway would link and also separate the traffic from this healthy natural park. As Doug asks: 'Consider the consequences’ ... and the alternative?

Gary Hoffman, Macedon During my 73 years I’ve seen some pretty dumb stuff, the proposed changes to Black Forest Drive are right up there. Although the Department of Transport claims it has CFA support, both the
Woodend and Macedon brigades say they haven’t been consulted and have serious concerns regarding the proposal. The department also quotes fatality/accident figures spanning 2001-2020, which neatly incorporates a decade when the speed limit was 100km/h and the majority of accidents occurred. Very nice cherrypicking to bolster the argument. The real question is: How many fatalities/accidents have occurred since the speed limit was reduced to 80km/h? One would have to ask why Black Forest Drive needs resurfacing, as the section from the sub-station to Nursery Road was resurfaced just six months ago, and the remainder of Black Forest Drive is in excellent condition, certainly compared to many other roads in the area. A good place to start might be busy Hamilton Road, which is in terrible condition but carries a lot of traffic between New Gisborne and Macedon. The proposed dedicated turning lanes already exist, it’s called the right-hand lane. The proposed bicycle lane already exists, it’s called the left-hand lane. Seriously, a far greater number of cyclists use Mount Macedon Road than Black Forest Drive, and Mount Macedon Road is a two-lane disgrace. If refuges are required for pedestrians/ schoolchildren, they can easily be created without impacting Black Forest Drive, but seeing as there are no footpaths or dedicated walking trails along the road, it’s hard to fathom where all those pedestrians are going to come from. Apart from the relatively short 60km/h section leading into Woodend, there are only a few dozen properties between Woodend and Macedon. Finally, although the Department of Transport asked for feedback on the proposal via their website, there was no option to voice disagreement or write a comment. Perhaps because they know their proposal has BAD IDEA written all over it.
Waste of money Carlo Veliscek, New Gisborne I totally disagree with Name Withheld ('Safety upgrade essential', Opinions, October 19). I don’t understand where you get your information from. You stated that the CFA and the Victoria Police endorsed this $6 million Black Forest Drive upgrade. Why then on page 9 of the Midland Express, October 19, did Woodend Fire Brigade captain Mike Dornau say neither the Woodend nor the Macedon brigades had been consulted on the planned changes? On the same page Mr Servis said “We have very high bushfire risk through here and to reduce the road to one lane in either direction means that you have greatly reduced access for fire trucks to overtake in smoke while people are trying to escape”. I totally agree with Jim Morrison Wood-
end on the same date in Opinions, as the old saying goes “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. I feel that to spend $6 million on this project is a waste of our good money.

Regional Victoria is poised for business – if we allow it to fly in, and put an end to the anti-tourism activity of duck shooting. Tourism typically contributes more to Australia’s economy than agriculture, forestry, fishing, IT, media and communications combined. Nature-based tourism is the fastest growing component. In 2019/20, tourism was worth $23 billion just to Victoria and employed 230,000 people. Year ending March 2020, 17.6 million domestic tourists engaged in at least one nature-based activity in Victoria – up 75 per cent in just five years. And most, that is 12.5 million of them, did so in our regions, spending $3.5 billion in the process (up 85 per cent in five years). Tourism Research Australia defines nature-based activity as visits to national parks, botanic gardens, wildlife parks, whale watching, bushwalking, birdwatching, scuba diving and snorkeling. According to a study by Griffith University for Tourism Australia (Consumer Demand Project), our wildlife is our number one attraction. In Australia, TRA captured birdwatching data for the first time in 2019. That year, there were over 1.4 million tourists who birdwatched in our country and spent a whopping $2.88 billion! More overnight domestic tourists birdwatched than visited the reef, and the number of international tourists who birdwatched was more than double those who fished. Latest data by Tourism Research Australia, shows that despite COVID, the number of domestic overnight tourists who birdwatched across our country has grown a further 28 per cent! Here in Victoria, it’s often the usual contenders reaping the rewards of tourism: The Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island etc. Yet the untapped potential to our small rural towns, which are blessed with fabulous waterways and waterbirds (many species unique to our country), is ready and waiting. There’s no infrastructure investment required. The stunning Kerang wetlands are listed as internationally significant, while the beautiful wetlands of Boort and Corangamite are rich in the oldest culture on earth. In fact, most of our tucked-away rural wetlands each have a unique story to tell, and none are hard to market. All we need to do is stop the recreational killing of our birds. Because, unsurprisingly, studies show tourists avoid places where there is shooting.

HomeBuilder success continues HomeBuilder has helped drive a record number detached house commencements in the June 2021 quarter. Building activity data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics for that period has revealed the value of building work and number of dwellings started, completed, under construction and in progress is higher than for any previous quarter on record. The figures also show 139,195 detached house commencements in the 2020/21 financial year, 5.2 per cent higher than the previous record of 132,377 set in 1988/89. The Northern Territory saw the largest increase in detached house commencements in the June 2021 quarter, up by 73.2 per cent. This was followed by Victoria (+31.4 per cent).

The great Australian road trip is back this summer, with more than 70 per cent of people surveyed planning to travel according to research by Mitsubishi Motors Australia. It was found that * 57 per cent will seek family and friends as part of their next adventure. * Nearly half of those surveyed (45 per cent) say the preferred mode of travel is driving. * Parents – who have been home schooling – say they’re ready for a new adventure. * 84 per cent of people are planning on spending the upcoming Christmas/ holiday season with family. * The busiest period on the road will be between 18 – 24 December (48 per cent) Synonymous with the road-trip, it’s perhaps no surprise that for nearly half of all those surveyed (45 per cent) say the preferred mode of travel is driving – in fact Australians take on average two or three road trips per year, with three in four Australians saying they plan on taking a road trip in 2022. When it comes to making a good road-trip great, travellers cite the scenery (60 per cent), stop-offs along the way (47 per cent) and the drive and in-car experience (35 per cent), as the three most enjoyable aspects of life on the road. Lower travel costs, good quality roadside hospitality, better road maintenance and less congestion on the road were the main reasons given for how a road-trip could be improved. When it comes to the destination, nothing beats exploring ‘your own backyard’, with Aussies most likely to want to take a road-trip in their home state before venturing further afield.

Is your car due for a post-lockdown TLC? "While your vehicle may be driving well, a good inspection every 12 months will help pick up any issues which aren’t obvious. Slow coolant leaks for instance, or oil leaks which are progressing and may need attention can be checked by your mechanic during a service and inspection. It’s better to get these items picked up earlier, rather than wait until there are obvious signs of leaks on your driveway, or even worse when the car breaks down." Remember, prevention is always better than a cure so if your car’s giving you that nagging service reminder every time you turn the key in the ignition it’s time to call your local mechanic! And with an expected rush ahead of Christmas, Andrea’s advice is to book in early.

Cricket club to honour Diggers Barkers Creek Cricket Club will be holding a special event at the club's historic cricket ground on Armistice Day, November 11, to commemorate and honour the 38 cricketers and residents of Barkers Creek who volunteered to serve the country in World War I. The day will see the unveiling of a permanent photographic display, honour board and history of the club, which was founded by a group of cricket loving pastoralists and miners in 1855. Club member and keen historian, Dr Geoff Courtis, said the club's present ground had been used since 1858, after a previous playing field was devastated by gold mining activity. "No other Australian country cricket club can claim continuity at their present ground since 1858," he said. Dr Courtis said the Melbourne-based St Kilda Cricket Club, also founded in 1855, has played at the Junction Oval since 1856, narrowly edging out Barkers Creek as the oldest club playing on its original ground. "St Kilda CC however cannot boast sixth generation cricketers still representing the club such as the Grant and Norris families – whose ancestors will be among the Diggers honoured on Remembrance Day," he said. The names Peeler, McKindley, Riedley, Felstead, Pritchard, Walter, Carr, Cole, Code and McManus represent other pioneering Barkers Creek families. In the years that have followed, the club has experienced a great deal of success in the local Castlemaine District Cricket Association, forged ties with friends at the Cricket Club of India, and been active in promoting women's cricket. In fact, Barkers Creek CC's side won the inaugural Castlemaine District Cricket Association Women's premiership in 2019-2020. "The club looks forward to fulfilling a pivotal role in the sporting and cultural future of the Barkers Creek community for many years to come and we are proud to honour
the service and sacrifice of these early members and residents," Dr Courtis said. The Castlemaine Highland Pipe Band will be in attendance at the event to be officially opened by former premier of Victoria Steve Bracks from 6pm. Among the soldiers to be honoured will be Walter Peeler who played with the club in 1909 and was awarded the highest military honour, the Victoria Cross for Gallantry, and Alexander 'Alec' Grant, captain of the club's 1921 Premiership team who served at Villers-Bretonneux in France. The photographic display also acknowledges Lieutenant Ernest Dilworth who was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty under very heavy fire east of Ypres on September 20, 1917. He was killed in action on May 6, 1918 aged just 25. And Albert Barnett 'A. B.' Facey who spent his early childhood in Barkers Creek before moving to Western Australia. A B Facey served at Gallipoli. The hardships and atrocities of this campaign are documented in his award winning book 'A Fortunate Life' published in 1981 just nine months before his death at age 87. Seven members of the Facey family served in the war and sadly four were killed. The photographic display and accompanying narrative panels were made possible by a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Funding to assist with the event was generously supported by a grant from Mount Alexander Shire Council. Because of COVID restrictions, including number of attendees which is presently under review, attendance at the event is by invitation only, and will require certificate proof of double vaccination status. Romsey Football Netball Club has just announced two coaching appointments for the 2022 season. Leigh Miles will be in charge of the A-grade netballers. A dual junior premiership coach, he has a very positive attitude with years of netball coaching behind him. Reserves football coach next season will be Phill Lobb, a dual senior premiership player. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the coaching panel. Romsey’s annual general meeting takes place tomorrow (Wednesday) evening at 7pm in the clubrooms.

Snappy Secret is a galloper with plenty to learn, but the ability’s certainly there. That was the general consensus after the well-bred three-year-old finished strongly to win on Bendigo Cup Day last week. Trainer Danielle Chapman says the gelding doesn’t really know what he is doing yet, and he has been given plenty of time to reach this stage where he is competitive on a racetrack. Like several other thoroughbreds in the stable, Snappy Secret was a bargain buy, being purchased for $3250 from the Inglis Online (January) Sale this year. Back in 2000 he was sold for $80,000 at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, but subsequently had breathing issues. Now raced by the trainer and family members, Snappy Secret appreciates the open spaces at their North Woodend rural property. At his race debut at Benalla earlier in October he finished well to be a close third, and Patrick Moloney had the ride again at Bendigo. Well back approaching the turn, Snappy Secret (a $14 chance) flew home to win by three quarters of a length. Snappy Secret is the fifth galloper to have won for Chapman this year.
New look in bowls Bill West
Highlands (formerly Central Highlands) pennant bowls begins its 2021-2022 pennant season on Saturday, with the inclusion of Kilmore and Broadford clubs creating plenty of interest. There are nine teams in division one, an increase of three on last season when Lancefield emerged as premiers by defeating Kyneton in the grand final. Lancefield’s top side will bear little resemblance to the premiership combination, with several top players transferring to other clubs. The departure of skipper Aaron Young to Bacchus Marsh may be hard for the Tigers to cover. Kilmore and Broadford have teams in division one, and Trentham is also elevated after a thrilling extra ends division two premiership. Gisborne should improve with Andy Macdonald (ex-Kyneton) among the new recruits. Kyneton Golf is a perennial topfour side and should be a contender once again, as should Kyneton, another consistent performer. Romsey narrowly missed the finals last season, and coach Gary Templar should be confident natural improvement and more depth will get the Redbacks there this time. Kilmore, premiers last season in the now disbanded Central competition, and Broadford should both prove competitive in their new surroundings. Saturday’s opening round matches are: Division one: Gisborne v Romsey, Kyneton Golf v Lancefield, Broadford v Trentham, Diggers Rest v Kilmore, Kyneton a bye. Division two: Romsey v Broadford, Macedon v Woodend, Kilmore v Kyneton, Gisborne a bye. Division three: Gisborne 3 v Kilmore, Gisborne 4 v Romsey, Lancefield v Macedon, Woodend v Diggers Rest. The first round of midweek pennant takes place next Tuesday.

GOLF results Lancefield Golf at Lancefield on Saturday almost resembled the start of the Le Mans with eager members from various Melbourne districts and Mitchell Shire back in the fray. With coring completed, the greens have recovered extremely well, and commenced sculpturing of the fairways can only enhance the course. Jason Byron (handicap 40) was the overall stableford winner with 40 points, with Troy Linehan (14) next best on 37. Friday twilight (10 holes): Denis Linehan (19) 23 points. After an absence of three months Chris Vandervliet clinched the men’s October medal with 98-26-72. Mitch Atlas 85-11-74, Anthony Lakey 93-19-74 and Scott Williams 88-14-74 were next best. Women’s medal: Jenny Hartley 95-24-71 with a new putter working well. Least putts: Andrew Clement 25. Trentham The annual Trentham Tournament is one of the highlights of the country golf calendar – and it’s definitely on again. After several postponements and a huge amount of work following the devastating storm damage on June 9, the course is back in excellent condition, and tournament entries are now invited. The women’s 18-hole open will set things rolling on Tuesday, November 30; there’s a four ball best ball stableford on Wednesday, December 1, and a four person Ambrose on
Friday, December 3. An American foursomes on Saturday, December 4, will be followed by the men’s open on Sunday, December 5 (18 holes only this year). All participants must be double vaxxed. Trentham ladies played a par event on Saturday. Grade winners: A – Terri O’Callaghan +6, B – Jenny Clarke square; C – Marg Brierley minus 3. Woodend The Woodend Elite junior golf academy begins next Wednesday, and extends over six weeks. Professional Jake Killeen will host the instruction sessions for 12 to 16-year-olds., with the club keen to encourage more juniors to take up the sport. Volunteers carried out improvement works on the course on Sunday morning, and larger numbers are expected now metro members are allowed to participate in events. Woodend’s annual general meeting is to take place on the evening of Saturday, November 20, following the presentation of championship trophies.

The 2021 bet365 Kyneton Cup highlights a nine-event race meeting tomorrow (Wednesday). The Cup meeting is traditionally the highlight of the Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club’s season, but unfortunately there will be no provision for spectators this year due to the lead-up COVID-19 situation. It has been confirmed the club’s New Year’s Day and Australia Day meetings will proceed at Hanging Rock with full provision for spectators expected. The $125,000 Kyneton Cup over 2000m is the eighth race on tomorrow’s program, to be run at 4.40pm. Fields were declared yesterday morning, and equal topweight is Dark Dream to be
ridden by Jamie Mott for the powerful Hayes stable. There looks to be plenty of gallopers with credentials to take out the time-honoured feature race. These include Ballarat Cup winner Irish Flame, who would only have to strike top form to be right in the finish, and Double You Tee, from the Paddy Payne stable. Double You Tee has raced well at Kyneton before, and with Billy Egan in the saddle should be in contention when it matters. The other eight runners are on the minimum weight of 54kg, and at their top, would be a chance of landing the big prize. Gisborne’s $104,700 MND record breaker Bill West
Against the odds, Gisborne Football and Netball Community, and importantly its sponsors and partners, has raised a huge amount to go to the Fight MND charity in the ongoing battle to try and find a cure for motor neurone disease. The $104,700 record breaking tally for the 2021 season campaign selling thousands of special beanies was revealed at a special ceremony at Gardiner Reserve on Thursday. The Bulldogs’ spirit has again been epitomised for the third year in a row, and Golden Bulldogs chairman, Darren Ponton, said he and the coterie would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Gisborne Football and Netball Club, Gisborne Masters Football Club, Gisborne Giants and Gisborne Rookies junior football netball clubs. This is the third year the Gisborne
Football and Netball Community has united to fight MND. In the first year an inspiring $42,000 was raised, and this soared to $88,880 last year despite COVID-19 wiping out the season. The $104,700 tally breaks Gisborne’s own record for a football-netball community and tops the tonne for the first time. “It could have been even bigger had COVID not put an end to the planned game day which promised so much fun and family engagement – also to wear the beanies and socks with pride and sell even more,” Mr Ponton said. In 2019 the original target was to sell 500 beanies, and this became 1000 as interest spread, with 2000 eventually being sold. Each year a new beanie is designed with limited numbers produced. Last year, despite COVID and no matches at all, 4444 beanies were sold largely through sponsors and supporters.

Kyneton trainer Liam Howley produced an unraced three-year-old for an impressive win on Friday night. Station One, ridden by Billy Egan, is now scheduled to run at the Flemington (Melbourne Cup Day) meeting today. It’s a big jump from winning a Maiden at Cranbourne to saddling up four days later at headquarters in the Spring Carnival. By Toronado (IRE) from Alittle Loose, Station One was a $5 chance on debut,
and he could hardly have been more impressive in the 1600m event. For much of the journey Station One bowled along in second place, then drew clear to win by two and a half lengths from Top Honours. Liam Howley Racing’s modern complex is located at Pipers Creek, and Station One has drawn barrier 4 in the TAB Trophy event (Race 9 at 4.40pm) at Flemington. Bookmakers had him at double figure odds yesterday.

Young, former Gisborne teenage star now on Essendon’s senior list. “Year after year, we are blown away by the support and enthusiasm of the Gisborne Football Netball Community and cannot thank them enough for their outstanding contribution to the fight against MND in 2021,” Ms Hamilton said. “Research is expensive and takes time, but with the support of the whole Fight MND Army, we are able to make targeted investments in research to find effective treatments and ultimately a cure for MND. The efforts of former AFL star football and coach Neale Daniher, who is still courageously battling the ravages of the disease, has done much to lift public awareness and led to millions of dollars being donated in recent years. Rutten said it was tremendous to see the support generated for such a worthy cause at local level.
