"We've had two or three months of living in this surreal bubble," Peter said.

"To come back to real life has taken a bit of adjustment. It was a bit nerve-racking to start with but it was just great fun.

"The executive producer said 'the sooner you give yourself over to the process the more you'll enjoy it'. And he was spot on."

Alice agreed that while the process of being part of the show was pretty intense and involved plenty of long hours, it was a great experience.

"It was great. It was hard though, and it's not just a cooking show either. I'd say about 80 per cent of it is about being able

to cope with other people and pressure," she said.

"We had really good people in our group, which made it a lot easier."

Peter said one of the big highlights was meeting "culinary goddess" Nigella Lawson and her fellow MKR co-host and judge, Manu Feildel.

"The judges were just delightful," he said.

Filming for the series with Peter and Alice took place at the Bottomley family home in Chewton.

Now many 'Maine residents are hungry to know how Peter and Alice fared.

However, they're not about to spill the beans on that.

"You'll just have to watch it," Peter said.

It's not the best-kept secret around town that Castlemaine father and daughter, Peter and Alice Bottomley, are soon to appear as contestants on the new TV season of My Kitchen Rules.

The two are no strangers to keeping their cool when the temperature soars in the kitchen as the family owns and operates popular Castlemaine cafe, Run Rabbit Run, where Alice is head cook.

Ahead of the new MKR season's start this Sunday August 7, Alice shared a few insights into how their selection from among countless hundreds of applicants came about.

"It was a bit of a joke actually," said the

local cook whose talents in the kitchen have already won her many local fans.

"I had only part-completed an application on my phone, but it obviously got through anyway because then I got an email from the producers asking if I'd like to finish completing the application.

"I said 'hey dad, I've filled in this application for MKR ... do you want to do it?'"

Peter, who describes himself as "just a home cook", admitted he was a little shocked at first, but soon digested the implications.

"I thought 'Oh God, what's she done?' he chuckled.

Alice said it was back in January that she filled in the application.

Premier Daniel Andrews stopped over in Castlemaine on Friday to enjoy a tour of the Castlemaine Art Museum with Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards.

The visit follows the state government's commitment of $6 million in May towards upgrades at the gallery and a master plan for redevelopment.

The funds will enable CAM to begin the first stage of construction including critical improvement works to protect the structure of the building, in particular the roof, and improve lighting, atmospheric conditions, security, undertake painting and provide universal access at the entrance.

The master plan for the redevelopment of the rare art deco building, which was opened following a grassroots push by the community in 1931, is being developed by John Wardle Architects and the works will be carried out in close consultation with Heritage Victoria.

The funding will also include planning towards stage two of the master plan, which includes grand plans for expansion, including a lift to a new glass upper level that would boast 360 degree views of Castlemaine.

The redevelopment aims to enhance the local art venue's profile statewide and beyond, attracting more tourism to the region.

Mr Andrews was welcomed to country by local Dja Dja Wurrung elder Auntie Kerri Douglas before undertaking a tour of the local venue with gallery director Naomi Cass, general manager Sarina Meuleman and deputy chairperson Helen Symon, local artist and board member Melinda Harper and trustee George Milford.

The Premier took a keen interest in the works of Clarice Beckett, Jeffery Smart and Eric Thake's linocut, An Opera House in Every Home, and also enjoyed the chance to view the vote card of Castlemaine's infamous first female voter Fanny Finch in the museum.

Mr Andrews acknowledged it was important the atmospheric conditions in the gallery were suitable to be able to display its significant works and that the space was easily accessible for all.

"It's not just about providing wheelchair access, but universal access for people on a whole, including those with mobility

issues and families with prams," he said.

Mr Andrews also made some positive suggestions to the CAM team about the possibility of loaning significant works from other galleries as a drawcard to Castlemaine.

Ms Cass said the Premier's surprise visit to CAM with Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards was an exciting opportunity to share CAM's vision and thank the state government for critical capital works funding.

"We were astonished at Dan Andrews' interest in and knowledge of Australian art and many artists in our collection. His respect for Castlemaine's fabulous heritage-listed art deco building was greatly appreciated. He seemed totally on board with CAM's role in the local art ecology," Ms Cass said.

Farm build rejected

A build to support a prize horse stud proposal in Bolinda has been rejected in a bid to prevent fragmentation of farmland.

The 22.534ha Mullalys Road property falls under the 40ha build guide for the Farm Zone and required a permit to proceed.

Last week Macedon Ranges Shire Council voted 6-3 against the proposal, drawing on council planning officer advice.

Officers recommended refusal on the grounds of fragmentation of farmland and the lack of justification for a permanent dwelling on the site.

"Planning officers have demonstrated strong planning grounds to reject this permit," Cr Annette Death said.

"Allowing this to go ahead could limit the ability to merge lots and future ability for larger pursuits."

Council officers had also informed councillors of important details missing

from the application that were sought but not supplied.

However, Cr Geoff Neil pushed for the permit's approval and was backed by Crs Bill West and Mark Ridgeway.

Cr Neil said no objections had been received and highlighted benefits of the application.

"We're talking about breeding horses and that's an agricultural use. The applicant is talking about horses in the multimillion-dollar mark," he said.

"This is the last block in the area that doesn't have a house on it. There are times when it is better to have someone looking after the land rather than letting it go.

"There are too many plusses to this application to say we shouldn't do it."

A division recorded a 6-3 vote in favour of refusal. Councillors supporting refusal were: Guthrie, Anderson, Moore, Pearce, Bonanno and Death.

Construction on the Kyneton North Recycled Water Irrigation Scheme is under way following a successful approvals process with local councils and Environment Protection Authority.

Coliban Water's chief officer of assets and operations, Danny McLean, said the 14-kilometre pipeline was the final stage of the $17 million Kyneton Solutions Project designed to better manage wasterwater at the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant.

“This pipeline is a smart use of recycled water to boost agricultural production in our region, and is a demonstration of our commitment to sustainable and beneficial reuse options for our recycled water,” Mr McLean said.

Following the construction of the pipeline and a foundational reuse site, there will be future capacity in the pipeline to irrigate more land along the pipeline.

The recycled water delivered through the pipeline will be Class C water, which is approved by the EPA for use in agricultural irrigation, will allow the organisation to redirect this product to beneficial use for irrigators.

“Until this pipeline is complete, and the storage and release model can be balanced, we will continue to manage water at the plant to avoid uncontrolled releases to the environment," Mr McLean said.

“Recycled water for community benefit is something that has been used in Kyneton for many years. We use Class B water on the soccer fields and showgrounds, and racecourse as well as the Kyneton Botanic Gardens.

"This pipeline will add another beneficial use for recycled water in the region,” he said.

The pipeline is expected to take six months to complete.

History focus in reservoir upgrade

Coliban Water has also submitted its licence amendment application for the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant to the Environment Protection Authority.

The EPA will now consider and decide how released wastewater from the WRP will be regulated into the future.

The licence amendment application is now available for feedback at connect. coliban.com.au until Friday August 19.

A community drop in session will be held on Monday August 8 between 10am and 1pm at the Kyneton Bowling Club for those wanting to learn more about the amendment process.

“The proposed new licence is very different to the current one. It proposes a new measurement location for licence compliance, a complete overhaul of the water quality elements, and changes to the dilution regime,” Mr McLean said.

Bunnings, McDonalds VCAT nod

Stories of Aboriginal history and geography have been unveiled at Upper Coliban Reservoir as part of a park upgrade.

The works included construction of a mayam shelter, the Djangi Walendjak walking trail, paths and landscaping.

New interpretive signage tell the stories, history and geography of the Dja Dja Wurrung peoples.

The project also features black glass incorporated into the concrete slab to represent the tachylite mine that was submerged by the formation of the reservoir. Tachylite is a rock that was used by Dja Dja Wurrung peoples for making flaked stone tools.

Local sandstone and bluestone has been used in the landscaping and local timbers used as structural beams in the shelters and toilets.

Plants have been selected due to their traditional significance to the Dja Dja Wurrung peoples through their use as food and fibre plants.

A Kyneton development with McDonalds, Bunnings and a 24-hour petrol station has been approved at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

The two-part commercial proposal for Edgecombe Street attracted hundreds of submissions airing concerns for traffic, safety, and impact to social, environment and local economy.

The developer says the plan will create 200 ongoing local jobs and represents an investment of more than $15 million in the local economy. The Bunnings store alone is expected to create 40 permanent jobs for local residents.

A further 290 jobs are expected to be created during the construction period.

On ground works and installation of signage is expected to be completed in coming days with the second stage of work to be undertaken in the central section of the park over the next two years.

“Castlemaine Diggings is Australia's first national heritage park and contains many relics of Victoria’s gold rush history.

Parks Victoria is committed to sustainably managing historic places on behalf of the community,” Parks Victoria area chief ranger Karen Doyle said.

“Once complete, the new interpretive offerings will provide opportunities to learn about the extensive Aboriginal cultural heritage in the park with Dja Dja Wurrung stories sitting alongside information about the the impacts of Victoria’s gold rush history.”

Car parking upgrades, new interpretive signs and conservation works on some heritage-listed sites within Castlemaine's Diggings National Heritage Park are on the way for the northern section of the park.

Happening under a partnership arrangement between Parks Victoria, DJAARA and Mount Alexander Shire Council, the works will take place in northern sections of the park, including Garfield Water Wheel, Scotchmans Gully, Specimen Gully, Monster Meeting site and Nimrod Reef Mine/Welsh Village.

Upgraded trail heads, walking tracks, and stone conservation works on the Specimen Gully hut are included, along with improvements to car parking, new signage, and information boards in other locations.

New interpretive signage will display stories from the goldrush era alongside stories shared by the Traditional Owners, the Dja Dja Wurrung people.

Litter drop proves costly A Tylden man who dropped a parking receipt after using it to open a boom gate, wound up with a $1100 fine for littering.

Environment Protection Authority issued the fine in February after the man was seen dropping the receipt from his car window in South Yarra and made no attempt to pick it up. Another driver reported the littering offence and offered to provide evidence in court if necessary.

The accused man challenged the EPA fine in the Melbourne Magistrates Court, but the court found the charge proven and fined him $300 with $800 in costs.

Offenders may be prosecuted and receive heavy penalties.

Examples of property clean up that may require a permit include: using heavy machinery to clean up fallen trees, clearing away understorey to sow grass under trees, and any tree or shrub removal.

The Victorian Government’s policy for native vegetation is outlined in the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s Guidelines for the Removal, Destruction or Lopping of Native Vegetation. This is a state-wide document the council must consider when assessing proposals to remove native vegetation.

These guidelines seek to ensure there is no net loss to biodiversity as a result of the removal, destruction or lopping of native vegetation. They also assist in the protection of vital habitat for insects, reptiles, birds and mammals.

An increase in illegal vegetation removal has prompted Macedon Ranges Shire Council to encourage residents to seek advice before beginning major works.

Council’s director of planning and environment, Rebecca Stockfeld, said native vegetation was protected and a permit could be required for any removal of trees and understorey such as bushes and grasses.

“These mechanisms are in place to help preserve our stunning natural environment in the Macedon Ranges. It’s what makes it so special and we all play an important part in looking after it,” she said.

These plants may be protected by planning controls including significant landscape, environment significance, vegetation protection and heritage overlays. Illegal removal can result in heavy penalties.

Unauthorised clearance of native vegetation is illegal under the Planning and Environment Act 1987 and the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme.

Residents petition council

Safety concerns have prompted concerned Campbells Creek residents to petition the Mount Alexander Shire Council calling for the maximum speed limit to be reduced on the main road through the locality.

The petition comes as one concerned Campbells Creek local personally contacted the Express to detail her worries following a car crash that left one car "a write off" in recent days.

Castlemaine police have since confirmed a two-vehicle collision had occurred around 3.30pm on the main road through Campbells Creek and it was understood that one of the vehicles involved had been "following too close," police said.

"I heard the bang," said the local resident who contacted the Express regarding her long-held concerns about safety on the main road stretch through Campbells Creek.

"It happened near Slingo Earth Moving and the car was a write off," she said.

"The police were there. I've been waiting for it to happen. It gets really dangerous here from about three o'clock. There's going to be a bad one before too long."

Now, 144 community members have added their signatures to a petition that was tabled at last week's council meeting, calling for the speed limit on the main road through the township of Campbells Creek to be dropped from 60 to 50 km/h – with the exception of retaining the 40 km/h school zones during school hours,

Campbells Creek Primary School principal Rosie Critchley and Campbells Creek Matters representative Kerin Zable-Brown are among the locals calling for council and the RRV to undertake works to make the township safer for motorists and pedestrians. The petition also seeks to make the two adjoining school zones in Campbells Creek's Main Road safer with clearer signage and three sets of flashing amber lights.

The petitioners are calling for one set of flashing amber lights to be installed at either end of the school zones, and also for one set to be installed between the two schools as well.

The petition also seeks to "improve the safety of the confusing and hazardous intersection of Main Road and Fryers Road at the Five Flags corner, by replacing the two small traffic islands with a large roundabout more easily accessible for those with disability aids and prams".

Responding to a question from Cr Christine Henderson during the council meeting, the council's director of infrastructure and development, Michael Annear, said a roundabout was just one of several possible options that would first need to be explored with the Department of Transport, naming a T-intersection alignment among other possibilities.

Councillors resolved to receive a report regarding the petition at the first meeting of council in February 2023, a timeframe that Cr Henderson successfully argued, would be realistic and necessary in order to enable any "meaningful discussion" with the Department of Transport to take place in the meantime.

She said Neighbourhood House volunteers began exploring alternative community travel options when people indicated difficulties in reaching medical appointments.

"There was a huge expense to people not being able to turn up to appointments," she said.

"In Lancefield, we recognised that transport was an issue and we used funds from our community op shop to help people with access."

RNH coordinator Michelle Balthazar relayed an emotional case that demonstrated the desperate need.

"A community member had been on a waiting list for a life-saving procedure for two years and she came to us in tears because she couldn't get there. She had no social networks to assist," she said.

A community survey revealed 96 per cent of respondents identified the need to travel outside the area for medical appointments. About 43 per cent said they had missed or delayed appointments due to travel constraints.

Community ShareRide has launched for Lancefield and Romsey. developing a plan to address the needs of the community and it became obvious this extended beyond medical care.

"People have needs for alternate transport other than just medical – whether that's social or recreation – and it's just as important for people to have access to these activities for maintaining good mental and physical health," Ms Balthazar said.

Bendigo Bank has committed a $49,500 sponsorship across three years ($16,500 pa).

Senior manager Angela Dickens said the need for more transport options was a common conversation among clients.

"We were constantly hearing from the community that there was a need for transport so we are very excited to be a part of the launch," she said.

The trial timetable has pick-ups from Romsey and Lancefield on weekdays with destinations in Sunbury, Kyneton, Kilmore and Melbourne CBD. There are also options for travel between Lancefield and

Romsey, and around the two towns.

Scaffolding fell from a truck on the Calder Freeway last Wednesday, causing punctures and damage to more than 20 cars.

More than 20 cars were damaged when travelling along the Calder Freeway in Macedon last Wednesday morning.

It is believed scaffolding fell from a truck on the freeway, Melbourne-bound near Black Forest Drive just after 7am.

A number of drivers pulled over to the side of the freeway with punctures and dam-

age to their vehicles.

No one was injured.

A truck did not stop at the scene and police are investigating.

Gisborne South will be one of 20 locations across the fringes of Melbourne that will benefit from the federal government’s Peri-Urban Mobile Program.

PUMP provides funding to improve mobile connectivity, ensuring local communities have access to life-saving information during emergencies, improved connectivity and keeping residents in touch with family and friends.

McEwen MP Rob Mitchell said the joint $16.2 million program from the federal and state Labor governments would see two sites situated in Gisborne South to deal with the ongoing issues of connectivity in the area.

“This has been a top priority for me every year under the previous government’s Mobile Blackspot Program, it just always fell on deaf ears,” Mr Mitchell said.

“For too long residents in Gisborne have been left behind. Unable to use mobile phones or the internet in their own homes, things so many of us just take for granted.

“To then consider the last few years of working and schooling from home and the very real need in this area for adequate coverage in times of emergencies, Gisborne has waited long enough,” Mr Mitchell said.

Chamber Poets is back in full swing after successful June and July events and continues to play a key role in supporting poets in the aftermath of the pandemic.

At the next spoken word event on August 13, Tru S Dowling of Bendigo and Amanda Anastasi of Melbourne will converge in Woodend to promote their latest books, which were published during lockdowns.

The two featured writers will be reading from their most recent books, Tru from her gripping, verse novel set in 1940s Castlemaine, Butcher, Baker, His-Story Maker (Birdfish Books, 2020), and Amanda will read her mesmerising, compassionate, futuristic poems about climate change from The Inheritors (Black Pepper, 2021).

Tru Dowling is a performer, emcee, freelance editor, workshop presenter and competition judge, who teaches professional writing and editing at Bendigo Kangan Institute and Victoria University.

Her work has been awarded, read widely and published in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Amanda Anastasi is the current poet in residence at the Monash Climate Change Communication Research Hub, where she writes stories of the climate crisis. She is a two-time recipient of the Ada Cambridge Poetry Prize and convenor of Melbourne’s

most prestigious spoken word event, La Mama Poetica.

The Woodend-based band, Black Forest Smoke, will provide musical interludes, showcasing compositions they have written for a forthcoming debut album.

As with each Chamber Poets event, one of the highlights of the afternoon is the opportunity for attendees to read or perform spoken word in the Open Section.

At the July event, Angela Costi, Grant Caldwell and Claire Gaskin entertained the packed Woodend RSL with excerpts from their latest publications. Their performances were punctuated with readings from the Open Section and poems set to music by Black Forest Smoke.

Jenny from Woodend, who attended the event, says of Angela Costi’s poems, “They were exquisite little pictures of the migrant experience, combining both a playful love of the strange new country with a bittersweet nostalgia of what was left behind. Poets are absolutely my favourite people in the universe, and we need more of them!”.

The August event will be held on Saturday the 13th at 1pm at the Woodend RSL. Entry is a donation of $5 or $10 at the discretion of the person attending and the poets’ books will be available for purchase. All are welcome.

Lisa Dennis The Lions Club of Castlemaine presented a hearing assistance dog 'Buster' to local resident Helen last week.

The spritely tenterfield terrier is the first assistance animal the local club has provided in the Castlemaine region and Lions volunteers will be working closely with Helen over the next three months to assist with reinforcing Buster's training as he settles into his new home.

Helen told the Express she had enjoyed the first few days bonding with her new companion.

"The training has been quite intense but Buster will make a huge difference to our lives," she said.

Helen explained that she wore two cochlear implants two assist her to hear during the day, but at night without her devices she was unable to hear the smoke alarm or other sounds in the event of an emergency.

"My husband Joe has had a number of falls, without my aids I can't hear him call out.

Buster is trained to alert me to these sounds or if Joe needs my assistance.

"He will come and gently tap me to alert me something's wrong," she said.

Just like a guide dog, Buster has public access privileges and can also accompany Helen into shops, supermarkets and on public transport.

"I'm told the first family in Finland have just taken delivery of two tenterfield terriers, apparently they are all the rage so we feel we are in esteemed company with young Buster," Helen laughed.

"He has been trained not to toilet when we are out and not to jump up on people or sniff things at the shops. He is a real gentleman," Australian Lions Hearing Dogs program director Darren Coldwell travelled from South Australia to deliver Buster last week and undertake training with local Lions volunteers.

Darren said Buster was purchased from a registered breeder at eight weeks old and placed in their puppy foster program for eight months before undertaking six months of training at their headquarters in South Australia.

"Dogs are provided to recipients free of charge thanks to the support of the Lions," he said.

"We have a really high success rate due to the support of Lions members in volunteering their time to help reinforce the training of each dog."

Darren said the tenterfield terriers were small and well suited to the role of hearing assistance dog.

"While they require premium quality food they only cost around $1 a day to run, unlike their larger labrador counterparts," he said.

Castlemaine Lions Club member Ron Gartside said they were proud to be able to make a small but important difference to Helen's life.

"This is something we have been working towards for about two years now and we are thrilled to see the project come to fruition," Ron said.

"The project was made possible thanks to the community support of Lions fundraisers such as our annual Swap Meet."

Gisborne South-based Splash Buddies Swim School has a green light to relocate to Pioneer Way in the New Gisborne Industrial Estate.

Last week Macedon Ranges Shire Council allowed a permit for its move to the industrial zone despite a council officer recommendation for refusal.

Key issues considered included appropriateness of a non-industrial use in the zone, compatibility of land uses on the site and safety concerns in association with the pedestrian and vehicle movement.

Owner Rynelle Mills told councillors the school might be forced to close to 470 children if relocation was not an option.

She said the school could no longer operate from its current facility as it did not allow for year-round heating of the pool.

The proposed floor plan includes two swimming pools, a pilates studio, change room facilities and a reception area with associated car parking.

Councillors approved the move with additional conditions to improve safety within the new site.

Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival's award for this year's best parade float will honour a festival great.

The award will be known as the Eric Scoble Memorial Award as a tribute to the festival's former president who died in 2020.

Festival organisers said Eric was a great force in the festival over many years and was greatly missed by everyone.

Following the grand parade there will be a fair in the former Kyneton Primary School grounds with performances, activities, music and food.

Food and drinks are also available for fairgoers and in the streets near other activities from both stalls and shops while festival activities continue during the day.

The parade and fair on Sunday, September 11, will conclude 11 days of art, gardens and entertainment.

SCARECROWS RETURN The festival will again enjoy the inventive skills of the Kyneton community’s scarecrow makers in the scarecrow competition in 2022.

There will be prizes for the best scarecrow overall, the best community scarecrow, best individual crow, best business scarecrow as well as the most popular scarecrow.

“People can drive around town to find them and visit shops and businesses to choose their favourites,” festival secretary Marg Dearricott said.

“As the festival approaches we will publish our usual entry forms on our webpage www.kynetondaffodilarts.org.au and our festival facebook page. Entry is free."

People can vote for their favourite scarecrow after collecting a voting form and lodging it at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute, which will be open daily throughout the festival.

Colleges pledge to assist students Families have had little warning to find alternate education after the shock announcement that Colmont School at Kilmore has gone into administration.

The private school, formerly known as The Kilmore International School, told parents at a meeting last week that it would no longer be operating for students in year three to year 10 from last Friday.

Families heard the school had gone into administration and that administrators would try to keep the school open to year 11 and 12 for as long as possible.

Colmont is one of the only schools in the region to offer the International Baccalaureate program. The closest offering is at least 50 minutes away.

Both nearby Assumption College and Braemar College have pledged to assist to find places for the affected students.

The Albanese Government is delivering on its election commitment to better support communities across the country where there is a GP shortfall, with local practices now able to recruit from a much bigger pool of doctors.

Updating the Distribution Priority Areas will see more than 700 areas with either full or partial DPA classification across Australia.

This is a result of the government’s election commitment to provide automatic DPA classification to regional centres as classified as Modified Monash (MM) 2, as well as maintaining exceptional circumstances DPA classifications.

Because international medical graduates and overseas trained doctors are only able to access Medicare if they work in a DPA area, a DPA classification means practices in DPA areas have access to more doctors who can work for the local community.

All 707 areas in need across the country, including Gisborne, Romsey and Woodend, will have priority access to this pool.

McEwen MP Rob Mitchell welcomed the news.

“This latest update of GP services is great news for the people in McEwen,” he said.

“I see first-hand the impact that a lack of GP services has on our community. Under this initiative, we will now have access to a broader pool of available GPs, which means improved access to quality care for the people of McEwen.”

A vigil will be held in Castlemaine on Thursday to honour community members who are homeless and further galvanise Mount Alexander Shire on action that is happening locally to address the housing crisis.

Homelessness Week, August 1-7, is an annual national event used to raise awareness of homelessness and its impacts and the broader and deeper systemic changes needed to address it.

Homelessness Week is coordinated

by Homelessness Australia and this local vigil is being coordinated by the My Home Network and Dhelkaya Community Health's housing team.

According to Purdy Buckle, manager of housing services at Dhelkaya Community Health, on any given night 64 community members are homeless in Mount Alexander Shire, more than 250 families are seeking support for housing crisis, and there is a shortfall of about 100 diverse, safe and affordable rental homes.

The shire needs at least 687 social housing units and far more crisis and transition housing to meet current demand.

Currently there is only one motel room for crisis housing.

“Homelessness and the risk of homelessness can profoundly affect a person’s mental and physical health, education, employment opportunities, connection to community and their ability to fully participate in society,” Ms Buckle said.

Everyone is invited to attend the vigil at the Castlemaine Market Building, 4-5pm Thursday August 4, and hear about the local housing supports and how the community can increase crisis, transition and longer term affordable housing in the shire.

My Home Network is a collaboration of community and government organisations, community members and lived experience of homelessness formed in response to increasing concerns about the lack of affordable, safe, secure, sustainable and appropriate housing in Mount Alexander Shire.

It is coordinated by Central Victorian Prevention and Population Health of Bendigo Health.

Artpuff's Kir Larwill says the world of sculpture and print that is Chenille Schtick, is like walking into someone else’s good mood.

“Such a delightful and accomplished mix of found objects, discarded packaging, styrofoam, ink and, yes, pipe cleaners," Larwill says.

"Assembled into pieces that express the incidental, the overheard, and the everyday. So very smile-inducing!"

The work on show is experimental and exuberant, emerging from a creative practice that is absorbed and sustained. A practice that is constantly seeking and incorporating new materials, sourced in the immediate environment – roadsides, a recycle bins, op shops… Colours are big and vibrant, applied spontaneously with stencils, pipe cleaners and rollers.

Gorring says her art making is in the form of prints, sculpture and drawing.

"It is about my home and the places I have been, people, flora and fauna, travels to Asia, Europe and within Australia. Text and words overheard or seen as signage. Neighbours’ bizarre habits, their animals and plants, comings and goings, all find their way into my work," she said.

A new exhibition that celebrates the human mark and the signs we make to tell our stories in our own words is set to be unveiled at Castlemaine's Lot 19 Arts Precinct this Saturday.

The new offering will has been curated by respected local arts commentator, author and radio presenter, Suzanne Donisthorpe, and features graffiti, protest posters, T-shirts, billboard enhancement, revolutionary jam labels, and secret signs left by swaggies.

Donisthorpe says it is the story of people power.

The show features some of the who's who of the local arts community including Annabel Nowlan, Bob Clutterbuck, Tracey Naughton, Sir Leslie Thornton and Ben Laycock and is to be opened by the highly renowned and elusive street artist Banksie.

Donisthorpe says the intrinsic and identifiable characteristic of Annabel Nowlan's art practice stems from a long connection to land; the land of her family farm and of the Wiradjuri people, at Bimbi in south western New South Wales.

"In this show Annabel is exploring the human marks left by swaggies post WWI as they sought work, food and shelter in their travels.

Messages about whether those that followed could find good food, a warm bed, kind hosts or were best to steer clear," Donisthorpe says.

"There is evidence these covert communications are still used by itinerants internationally: by the Romani of Europe to the ‘hobos’ of America and the swaggies, wanderers and homeless of Australia".

Bob Clutterbuck was a founding artist at the famous Redletter print workshop in the 1980s, a teacher of vast experience the scenic artist has worked in TV, theatre, trade shows, advertising and amusement parks.

"He is currently working on establishing the Newstead Red Shed Arts workshop.

Some of the brightly coloured and iconic union and campaign t-shirts created on the press at Redletter will be among the items to feature," Donisthorpe says.

Tracey Naughton was born a textile artist and after a career in the arts took on global campaigns advocating for media

"Tracey's revolutionary jam is legendary and will feature in the latest exhibition, along with an array of tiny 'button' signs crafted from badges from campaigns and causes close to the heart of Castlemanians and those further afield," Donisthorpe says.

Naughton and Donisthorpe have also teamed up on a visual presentation of signs they have collected on their travels throughout the years and Tracey also has plans for an interactive QR code installa-

tion – a real sign of the current times!

Sir Leslie Thornton’s work is whimsical, beautiful, invigorating, compelling and lighthearted. With an abiding interest in geography and geopolitics, he looks at cities, landscapes, buildings and places in a unique way.

"Leslie takes what may seem mundane subjects and honours them with a tinge of facetiousness. Sir Leslie’s famous 'B class' buildings of Castlemaine are duly honoured in his work," Donisthorpe says.

Thornton is creating a unique signpost centrepiece for this particular exhibition, which will be a nod to all the places early settlers found 'disappointing', one of the most identifiable being Castlemaine's own

'Agitation Hill'.

Ben Laycock, self-proclaimed Barefoot Economist Chief Assistant to the Assistant Chief, Castlemaine Chamber of Commerce, says his chamber is focused on creating a society based on the exchange of good, not goods.

It is anticipated his contribution to the exhibition will look at feminising some of Castlemaine's more traditional signage.

The exhibition opening at the art space 19 Langslow Street, Castlemaine will be held from 2pm-4.30pm this Saturday August 6, with Banksie to officially open proceedings at 3pm.

Signs of the Times will be open weekends (Sat-Sun 11-4) until August 28.

History funds for CAM

Castlemaine Art Museum is among 40 community groups to receive support to capture Victoria's diverse history.

CAM is set to receive $11,969 towards a collection audit, rehousing, and preparation for significance assessment.

The CAM project is among projects that will share in $350,000 as part of the Local History Grants program run by Public Record Office Victoria to support community and history organisations to preserve, record and share Victoria’s local history.

Talbot Arts and Historical Museum will also receive $2070 towards cataloguing and access to Talbot Museum’s collections and historical data.

In addition Central Highlands Broadcasting Inc is also receiving $8400 support to interview pioneers of women’s football in Victoria on the establishment and growth of the Victorian Women’s Football League across its 30-year history.

Millie Ross from ABC's Gardening Australia program recently visited the Castlemaine Garden Club to give a talk.

Millie asked that the fee offered to her be given to a charity of the club's choice. It was $50, which the club doubled to $100 and presented to Mount Alexander Shire Accommodation and Respite Group to use in the garden of their respite house.

MASARG committee member Heather Morrison said this was the second gift they had received from Castlemaine Garden Club.

"Some time ago they gave MASARG money towards the large trees surrounding the respite house property at Melissa Court McKenzie Hill," she said.

"The garden is growing well, but does need a few things to be replaced, so this money will come in handy. MASARG really appreciate the Garden Club's generosity."

Mount Alexander Shire Council is a step closer to developing a plan to enhance the role and function of Castlemaine Railway Station precinct.

Last week the project received a welcome $20,000 boost from the state government's 'Flexible Local Transport Solutions Program' to assist in developing the plan to maintain the area’s historic value. Mount Alexander Shire Council will provide $20,000.

The latest funding follows the announcement in June of a $125,136 grant from the state government's 'Enabling Tourism Fund' for the Victorian Goldfields Railway towards strategic planning of the final stages of the heritage steam train project linking the historic gold mining towns of Castlemaine and Maldon. This links in with the Castlemaine Railway Station precinct plan.

The Castlemaine Station Precinct Master Plan will identify and assess the feasibility of developable land and commercial activities near the station.

Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards said the precinct provided a pivotal link between

the Castlemaine Commercial Centre to the southeast, The Mill and botanical gardens to the north, and the Camp Reserve and Old Castlemaine Gaol to the west.

The area supports a growing local tourism sector and community-building enterprises. It includes Victorian Goldfields Railway, Castlemaine State Festival Office and Castlemaine Circus.

A steering committee will be established to oversee the development of the plan.

Ms Edwards said the government was proud to support innovative local transport initiatives across regional Victoria.

"The Castlemaine Station Precinct Master Plan will help the area continue to evolve and thrive,” she said.

Speaking at the June announcement, Mount Alexander Shire Council CEO Darren Fuzzard said the master plan would be looking at the whole precinct from the Girl Guide Hall to The Mill.

"We will be looking at how all the different elements can really work best together to provide one really great experience for people," Mr Fuzzard said.

It is now almost 18 months since I responded to a call from the Macedon Ranges Shire Council for public submissions on improved tourist signage policy for Kyneton.

I submitted my submission on March 9, 2021, to Christine Sullivan, and received a telephone call from her the following Sunday thanking me for my comments. Since then, nothing. Kyneton's tourist signage remains at best dreadful, and at worst utterly appalling.

Current signage suggests our town's major tourist attractions are a winery tour, mineral springs, arts and craft, museum, and botanic gardens.

I beg to differ.

I have worked at a high level in tourism for a number of years and know the importance of effective signage.

Surely Piper Street and our restaurants and gourmet food outlets are our greatest tourist assets, followed by the Botanic Gardens (and its adventure playground) and the River Walk (including its open air gymnasium and sculpture section). And all demand decent tourist signage.

It is true that we have arts and craft outlets but they are hardly exclusive to our town.

However I should not be surprised by the lack of action from the Shire.

The Kyneton Men's Shed has been waiting for about two years for a single tourist sign at the corner of Edgecombe and High Streets pointing down to our Shed at 2 Riverwalk Boulevard. We could have made one up and erected it ourselves in a couple of days. But the Shire would probably have torn it down and fined us.

Wake up, Macedon Ranges Shire Council. Kyneton has become a tourist destination in spite of you, and certainly not because of you! It is time you made a contribution to our great town's terrific tourism potential.

Oh, and I would be grateful if you could please hurry up with the Men's Shed sign.

Referring back to my past letter regarding the criticism by a Mount Alexander Shire councillor about illegal rubbish dumping, I was pleased to hear that at the council meeting held in August of 2021, this matter was addressed and that the council was going to undertake a six-month study into the feasibility of providing residents with either free tip passes and/or hard rubbish/green waste collections.

In June of this year I was notified that the council had finalised their report and that they had decided they would not be implementing any such measures, instead adopting the actions of monitoring, education and compliance.

I'm fairly sure that most, if not all, residents would know that illegal rubbish dumping is just that, illegal.

I further asked via email as to what education programs they were going to implement, how the monitoring would work i.e. quantity, substance or area and how they would enforce compliance when most illegal dumpers ensure no identifying content is included in their dumpings.

I received a response to only one of the issues that outside of a certain area, the matter is not their responsibility. I went further to ask if this report would be available for public viewing to be told that it would not be.

I wonder that in if their decision they gave consideration to what I feel is the real constraint that residents face in relation to proper rubbish disposal, which is the cost?

I guess we will never know what prompted their decision but can only hope that there will be no further criticism of shire residents if they are faced with no other option when help is obviously not going to be given.

I'd like to give a shout out for the federal government funded Community Wellbeing Program, facilitated through the shire council.

The program is designed for older people and especially those who need assistance with getting out. i.e. being collected by the community bus.

The funding is linked through My Aged Care, however the team at council will help you through that registration.

Lots of activities daily from water exercise programs in Kangaroo Flat on Mondays to Senior Citizens Lunch Bus on Thursdays hosted by Chewton Senior Citizens (great day) and many more activities.

Mine is the Monday Afternoon Cards – 500 on every Monday from noon to 3pm at the Castlemaine Senior Citizens Hall next to the library. For me it's like dying and going to heaven. $2 donation for afternoon tea. If you're a 500 addict come along, we need you.

Community Wellbeing Social Support Program (as it is officially known) pamphlets are at the shire offices, library, or online on the shire website, but you have to be a computer scientist to find it under the services tab, hence this letter. Or you could try the old-fashioned way by telephoning the social support team at the shire on 5471 1807.

I write regarding the recent announcement of a grant by the state government to the combined Central Goldfields and Mount Alexander Shire Councils of $120,000 for a feasibility study into the proposed intention of converting the Castlemaine-Maryborough railway line into a shared-use pathway.

As such the following points may need to be considered: – Firstly, a lease of the corridor will be required to construct the pathway. The councils will probably be required to dismantle the railway line. This will involve removing all the rail infrastructure and then disposing of such and then followed by the preparation and grading of the road-bed and finally the laying of the gravel based pathway.

Following this the councils may be liable for a considerable capital expense. Also there may be opposition from non-'rail pathway advocates', ratepayers. With the grant of a lease councils then become responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the rail corridor.

– Secondly, as rail touring is now becoming very popular a restored CastlemaineMaryborough railway line would provide for a day's round rail tour from Melbourne to Melbourne via Ballarat, Maryborough, Castlemaine, Bendigo and return direct to Melbourne.

As this line is situated in the scenic and historic central Victorian Goldfields (Golden Triangle) region it could become a major tourist attraction and attract overseas and interstate tourists as well as for the heritage railways.

– Thirdly, the railway train is a very efficient user of fuel with a resulting low pollution rate. With the advent of a battery powered locomotive of 7MW/H for use in WA for hauling the heavy ore trains, with reduced running costs, quieter and importantly – no pollution.

This augurs for a very favourable future for rail freight trains. Freight only lines may now need to be restored. A restored Castlemaine-Maryborough line will also enable the introduction of a rail-pass train from Bendigo to Geelong via Maryborough.

Editor's note: It was stated at the recent funding announcement that the government had investigated reopening the former line but determined it would not be viable.

Local history inspires author Mount Macedon's historic Derriweit Heights has inspired a key setting of Australian author Jules Van Mil's debut novel A Remarkable Woman.

The historical fiction tells the story of a young Frenchwoman, Avril, who emigrates to Australia after tragedy at home during WWII. Avril was a dressmaker for Dior in Paris and wants to establish her own fashion label in her adopted city of Melbourne.

Circumstances see her take a different course, finding work as a governess on a family homestead in the Great Dividing Range – ‘Monaghan Station’.

Next to the Condamine River, the station is also home to numerous staff who work the house, paddocks and cattle.

The fictional station was inspired by the circa 1870s Derriweit Heights. The garden was designed

by Baron Von Mueller – a wellknown botanist and designer of many of Victoria’s famous Melbourne Botanical Gardens.

Author Jules’ grandfather owned Derriweit Heights in the 1950s and 60s and Jules has fond memories of early childhood years spent there. Jules herself is now based in Sydney.

’ A fascinating private garden Open Gardens Victoria is presenting a late winter open garden event at Tugurium, Stephen Ryan’s fascinating private garden at Macedon on Saturday and Sunday, August 27 and 28.

Tugurium is the private garden of the renowned garden expert, radio personality and nurseryman.

Set on a peaceful country lane at Macedon, the garden showcases Stephen’s decadeslong dedication to collecting and curating rare and unusual plants.

A Community Information Forum this month will provide an overview of the program and how you can become involved. A representative from CRSA, Blaise Itabelo, will be the guest speaker to take you through his journey from growing up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, living in a refugee camp and eventually migrating to Australia.

Blaise will explain the difference a welcoming community can make to new arrivals.

A CRSA group mentors a new settler.

Unwind, relax and refresh under the backdrop of Hanging Rock at The Spring Bliss Festival this November.

The event has been described as "spring cleaning for the soul" bringing together a range of mental health and wellbeing services and activities in a relaxing environment.

The fun family-friendly festival will include live music, a clothes swap, yoga, tarot card readings, talks and demonstrations, and a sensory-friendly kids' chillzone.

An LGBTIQ+ space will include a transgender catwalk, clothes swap and nonbinary circle, and a children's chillout zone will have everything from arts and crafts to

storytime. There will also be a range of First Nations activities including games, traditional face painting, basket weaving, song and dance, storytelling, language and plant knowledge.

Take part in dance, mindfulness, workshops, health and wellbeing information, exercise and affirmations.

With more than 40 different market stalls there is something for everyone to browse.

Spring Bliss Festival will be held at Hanging Rock on November 5, from 10am to 5pm.

The majority of taxpayers can now lodge their tax return as more than 80 million pieces of information are available in pre-fill.

Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh explained that much of the information the Australaian Tax Office collected from employers, banks, private health insurers, share registries and other institutions, was now ready to go in your tax return.

"If you also have all the information you need to manually include, then you have the green light to lodge,” he said.

While having this data ready to go cuts down time, taxpayers still need to check that their details are accurate and ensure any other information that hasn’t been pre-filled, is manually added. For example, income

Employers will provide an income statement or payment summary that shows the amounts received and the tax withheld. It is also important to ensure that income statements are marked as ‘Tax ready' by employers before lodging.

If taxpayers had more than one employer during the year, they will have more than one income statement or payment summary. If the information on an income statement or payment summary is incorrect, the employee should contact their employer as the employer should be able to correct any errors.

“No one likes delays, and this isn’t just limited to the morning traffic. Mistakes like forgetting to update your contact details, bank account details, leaving out income, overclaiming on deductions or making claims for non-deductible items, can slow down the processing of tax returns and your refund.”

So far this tax time, over $5.7 billion has been refunded to more than two million taxpayers.

“Four out of five people receive a refund with most refunds issued in less than two weeks.

This process can’t be sped up, even if you or your agent calls us,” Mr Loh said.

“After lodging your tax return, you can keep an eye on how it is progressing through ATO online services, the ATO app or by phone. If you lodged through a registered tax agent, they can also check this for you."

It’s important to note that the amount of any refund will depend on each individual’s circumstances and how much tax they have paid throughout the year.

Low and middle income tax offset The low and middle income tax offset (LMITO) has increased by $420 for the 2021-22

financial year (also known as the $420 cost of living tax offset). This has increased the base amount to $675 and the maximum tax offset amount to $1500. The offset applies to people with a taxable income less than $126,000, who are Australian residents for tax purposes.

The offset amount, and the amount of any refund will differ for everyone depending on their individual circumstances. Those who are eligible don't have to do anything different to claim the offset.

It will be calculated for them when they lodge their tax return.

“We understand that people will be looking forward to receiving the low and middle income tax offset again this year, but it’s important to remember it is not a cash refund or a tax bonus. The offset reduces the amount of tax you need to pay which can reduce your tax to zero,” Mr Loh said.

“If there is any offset remaining, you will not receive that amount as a cash refund.”

Additional lodgment support Those who engage with a registered tax agent may be able lodge after the usual October 31 deadline through the tax agent lodgment program.

TORING RACV has launched its new Online Safe Driver Training program, ensuring participants have access to a high-quality training program created by RACV’s own road safety experts.

RACV policy lead on safety, Elvira Lazar, said RACV wanted to help protect the safety of people who drove for work.

“According to Safe Work Australia, about one third of Australian workplace fatalities involve a vehicle and about 60 per cent of crashes are the fault of someone driving for work,” Ms Lazar said.

“With our new Online Safe Driver Training program, we teach drivers to protect themselves and others by adopting a ‘Safety Mindset’ that encourages them to understand the factors that increase crash risk and plan ahead to reduce that risk as much as possible.”

RACV executive general manager of motoring and mobility, Phil Turnbull, said RACV’s new program was an evolution of RACV’s existing classroom-based driver safety sessions and in-vehicle driver assessments.

“Over the last couple of years, we were asked by many organisations if we could deliver an online program as many people who drive for work cannot meet face-to-face due to schedules or work locations,” Mr Turnbull said.

“The online training covers every aspect of driver training and provides practical advice about the vehicle, the road and driver behaviours to keep drivers and everyone else on the road safe.

“It assists participants to evaluate their unique situation and make decisions about how to apply their learnings to their work environment.”

RACV’s training aligns with the Victorian Government’s Road Safety Strategy 2021 – 2030, which focuses on increasing safety for those using the road to get to work or for work.

The program taps into growing demand for and acceptance of online driver tests, training and education programs, and interest from businesses looking to upskill their drivers and keep them safe at work. The program complements existing RACV programs such as the Learner and Hazard Perception tests for young drivers which are now offered by RACV online.

A critically ill ewe has defied the odds after learning to walk again.

When Sally first arrived at Edgar’s Mission, a sanctuary for rescued farmed animals in Lancefield, her emaciated, parasite-riddled body was so weak she could not even lift her head, let alone stand.

“Our team worked tirelessly throughout the days and nights making sure all Sally’s needs were met,” said Pam Ahern, Edgar’s Mission founder.

“This included nourishing her body, daily rehabilitation sessions in her sling, exercising her once limp limbs, hand-feeding her the most succulent pieces of grass, and ensuring she was comfortable.”

After 29 days, the determined Sally stood on her own and bravely took her first wonky steps.

“Sally looked deep into our eyes, a mixture of gratitude and well-deserved triumph,” Pam said.

Sally’s support team of staff, volunteers and followers all over the world celebrated her victory as a video documenting her journey went viral online.

“Sally was placed by her circumstance in a situation that, if there was to be any hope of salvation, she was going to have to concede to work in unison with the species that had so sadly failed her,” Pam said.

“Relinquishing her fear has no doubt formed an integral part of her healing process.”

Sally now spends her days in a field with new woolly friends, where she can wander in the safety of sanctuary.

With horses’ birthdays yesterday, gallopers trained at Kyneton and Tylden got in and notched up their first wins just days earlier.

Perhaps they were looking for even extra attention on their birthday from their delighted trainers and connections!

Kyneton’s Marita Lawson does not have a large stable, and her career record shows 15 winners spread across some years.

At Echuca on Friday, Lawson saddled up four-year-old gelding Hoof To See as the $2.80 favourite after an impressive but unlucky third at Bendigo on July 14.

Having just his fourth career start, the four-year-old (now five) gelding settled back in the field in the $35,000 Border Inn Hotel Maiden Plate over 1200m.

Regular jockey Neil Farley said after the race he had been confident of winning, and Hoff To See finished strongly to overhaul Gobbo’s Mate virtually right on the line.

Lawson was pleased with the winning effort, and Hoof To See looks like he may handle a longer distance.

SIR JUGGERNAUT AT BENDIGO Winners continue to flow from the Hirsch Park racing complex at Tylden, the latest being two-year-old (now three) Sir Juggernaut on Sunday.

Trained by John Salanitri, Sir Juggernaut ($3.20) was kept safe as a result of his third on debut at long odds at Geelong back on January 14.

Sir Juggernaut lined up for his second race start in a Maiden Plate over 1100m, with Jordan Childs in the saddle.

Well positioned in the run, Sir Juggernaut finished up winning narrowly but well from Demon Award.

GOLF results Kyneton There was plenty of ice on the ground for at least the first four or five holes in Kyneton’s stableford event on Saturday.

Peter Walsh (15) had the day’s best score of 36 points and took out B-grade from Paul Law (19) on 34.

Jason McClure (5) topped A-grade with 33, on a countback from Matt Waters (9), with Damien Summers the super pin winner.

On Friday, the T-Birdies had a Christmas in July dress-up day, as well as playing a par three event over nine holes with Michelle Werner the winner.

Rick O’Donnell and Peter Walsh won Wednesday’s two-person Ambrose with 73-9.25-63.25, from Noel Alldis – Col O’Sullivan 73-8-65.

Jane Stanley, a graduate from the TBirdies, won on her first competition day last Tuesday.

Lancefield Lancefield golf ladies have continued with fun games while the weather is less than enticing.

Who knew there were so many variations of golf.

Last week they played three-person 13hole Bingo, Bango, Bongo.

Yes, this is a golf game that makes you really concentrate on your short game to win points.

The winner was Carole Mee with 23 points, with Di Brennan runner-up on 20.

This week it’s breakfast in the clubrooms before heading out to compete for the August Medal.

Mount Macedon Perfect winter golfing conditions for the Jumbuck Sheepskin and Leather’s July monthly medal at Mount Macedon on Saturday.

The medal and B-grade winner was Broadford GC member Brad Malone with 79-16-63.

Evergreen Peter Sinclair (8) was the A-grade and stroke winner with 78-8-70, while C-grade resulted in a tie between Steve Osborne (23) and Dave Dunstan (28).

Steve Smyth took out the June medal play-off, with Sinclair, Matt Pope, Darren Mantynen and Tony Littman NTPs. Best putter was Tony Carter (28).

Last Wednesday’s gentlemen’s stableford attracted a small field, with Lachlan O’Gorman (19) the winner with 38 points.

Five ladies braved the chill on a sunny Sunday for a modified Ambrose short course competition as part of the ongoing Ladies Get Into Golf@MMGC program.

Clare Crosby was NTP on the third hole, and the ladies shone by combining to par the short course.

Romsey To put together 18 consistent holes was just too much for the majority of Romsey players in the monthly medal event on Saturday.

Strong northerly winds and soft fairways were a real test.

Andrew Clement emerged as the medal winner with a fine 79-8-71, from Mick Nicholls Jnr 86-12-74, with Clement and third placed Mick Squire the NTP winner.

It was a tough slog with long and high shots gaining some reward on Wednesday in the women’s medal.

Jenny Hartley 103-23-83 won on a countback from Kath Jekabsons 121-38-83 (also least putts) and Darlene Baker 10117-84.

Newcomer Lea Castle won the nine-hole event.

Trentham The first round of the Winter Cup took place at Trentham in cold but fine conditions on Saturday.

The early leader for handicap honours is C-grade winner Nathan Johnson who fired a fine 97-33-64.

All part of National Tree Day activities, helping to further enhance the course.

There were some very good scores in the stableford event on Saturday.

Mick Keating (10) and wet track specialist Fergus Nevin (12) both came in with 41 points, the former winning on a countback.

Ultra-consistent Andrew Davies (1) came in third on 36 points.

Macedon appoints cricket coach

Tim Berzins has been appointed Macedon Cricket Club’s coach for the 20022-2023 season.

He takes over the role from Daniel Trotta.

Berzins impressed with the Cats in their Johnstone Cup side last season, his first with the club.

Macedon reached the grand final, and the talented allrounder brings plenty of experience with him from Victorian Premier Cricket and the Victorian Turf Cricket Association.

Berzins said there is plenty of junior talent coming through the club, and this was a very good sign for the future.

Last season the club’s three senior sides all played in finals, and the club also fielded two Under 17s sides.

KBA results

There were mixed results for Kyneton Basketball Association's six teams competing in Bendigo's winter domestic competition on the weekend.

Consecutive strong wins were achieved by both the Boys U14 Gold and U16 teams this week. Both the U16 Girls and U18 Boys Gold fought hard but fell short.

Aspiring local athletes, Arabella Dietz, Lenny Maxwell and Adrian Kiliva, are super excited in being selected into the School Sports Victoria, 12 years and Under Basketball Vic State Teams.

The trio will compete in School Sports Australia Combined Basketball Championships, which will be held in Bendigo from August 13-19.

Many past School Sports Victoria team members have gone on to compete at national and international competitions including Olympics Games, World Championships and Commonwealth Games, so look out for these names in the future.

It all kicked off with a solid performance by all three at the regional tryouts that were held earlier in the year in Shepparton.

From there, they were selected to attend a two-day intensive camp during the June school holidays in Werribee, where the top 60 girls and 60 boys across the state competed for a spot on their respective teams.

Arabella, a student at Kyneton Primary school, said it was a tough but rewarding two-day camp as she got to meet new people and coaches with a lot of competitive work each day.

"I was really tired by the end of it but felt I’d given it my best effort,” she said.

Arabella started playing competitive basketball at the age of eight through KBA. She has represented the Bendigo Braves in their Div 1 U12 team, won a number of tournaments as part of the U14 CVBA and recently represented the RBA at the U14 Junior Country Champs tournament, with the team finishing third in the state.

Parents Luke and Nadene are super proud of her efforts.

“Arabella’s dedication to the sport, her willingness to listen and learn from her local coaches, Michelle and Simon, is a testament to her development and confidence to put herself out there and challenge herself,” Nadene said.

Lenny Maxwell who attends Gisborne Primary School is very proud to represent his school and to have the opportunity to play for VIC in the SSV team. Lenny has been aiming to make this team since he realised it was an event years ago.

Adrian Kiliva, a student at Salesian College is looking for forward to the challenge of taking on the other states teams in Bendigo in August.

Lenny plays domestically for Gisborne Bulldogs, Adrian for Woodend Hawks and both represented the MRBA at the recent U14 Junior Country Championships.

Sunbury’s DOC Kennedy Kereama said that from an SBA standpoint they were very proud of Adrian’s and Lenny’s achievements and selection to the SSV team.

"It’s always great to see any players hard work rewarded. Both Adrian and Lenny are very dedicated to their craft and are always spending additional hours outside of their scheduled training shooting and working on their game," Kereama said.

All the kids are excited to attend the tournament and look forward to playing in front of family and friends with the event close by this year.

Sunbury Macedon Ranges Veterans Cricket Club is seeking new players for their Over 50s, 60s and 70s teams.

The club is entering a fourth team in the Veterans cricket competition this coming season and are seeking players to play in over 50s, 60s and 70s competitions.

Club president Barry Borlase said their vision was 'Cricket – A sport for life' with the goal of providing maximum opportunities for people to participate in the game of cricket for as long as they wish.

"We aim to promote the social, physical and mental health benefits staying involved in cricket, over many years, as a player, club member, volunteer and /or official," Borlase said.

"Our motto is 'you don't stop playing cricket when you get old – you get old when you stop playing'.

"Our emphasis is on fun, social interac-

tion and enjoyment, and less emphasis on performance.

"We encourage traditional cricket for fun, friendship and play in true spirit. Changes in veterans cricket suit the needs of less active people and increase the accessibility to a wider audience.

"We foster a community for senior members to participate in physical activity, strengthen our community connections through engagement and socialisation,” he said.

The club is confident it will recover strongly this year and with support it can quickly resume its momentum after two years of COVID. "Any increase in our membership enhances the opportunity for our club to grow by providing the local community with more places for senior members to participate in physical activity and foster the community

to be active and healthy," Borlase said.

Magpies show positive signs against Flat The Castlemaine Magpies made the trek to Dower Park to tackle Kangaroo Flat in round 15 of the Bendigo Football Netball League last Saturday.

Castlemaine's young Senior side were slow to warm up only managing three points in the first term with the Roos kicking three goals to hold a 17 point buffer at quarter time.

Flat continued on with the job in the second kicking another four goals to the Magpies one and had increased their advantage to 36 points at half time.

To their credit the Magpies lifted in the third and piled on another four goals, while holding the shocked Roos outfit to just four points for the term to pull the difference back to 11 points at the final change. Zac Denahy was in fine form kicking four for the Pies.

However, the home side managed to re-group in the final quarter kicking another 3.5 to the Magpies 1.1 to win by 27 points.

Final scores were Kangaroo Flat 3.2, 7.4, 7.8, 10.13 (73) to Castlemaine 0.3, 1.4, 5.9, 6.10 (46).

The Reserves battled out an even first quarter and only trailed by seven points at quarter time, but unfortunately Flat dominated the match from the second quarter onwards despite the Magpies resilient efforts. Aidan Goddard was the stand out kicking three for Castlemaine.

Final scores were Kangaroo Flat 3.3, 8.5, 11.7, 15.10 (100) to Castlemaine 2.2, 3.2, 3.2, 4.3 (27).

Goal kickers for the Magpies were Aidan Goddard 3, Wilson Staples.

Best for Castlemaine were Camblar Kays, Wilson Staples, Lachlan Maltby, Angus Mayes, Aidan Goddard and Austin Peace.

The Castlemaine Under 18s also made a promising start in an even first quarter kicking two goals to Flat's three for the term and there were only seven points in it at the first change.

The tight tussle continued in the second with both teams managing to get just one goal on the board.

The Magpies had more opportunities in the third quarter and kicked three goals to Flat's two.

However, in the last term the Pies ran out of steam and the Roos kicked two more goals to claim a 15 point win.

Final scores were Kangaroo Flat 3.2, 4.5, 6.7, 8.9 (57) to Castlemaine 2.1, 3.4, 6.4, 6.6 (42).

Netball On the netball court in A Grade Kangaroo Flat 57 proved too strong for Castlemaine 38, A Reserve were unlucky to fall short by 10 with 41 to Flat's 51. In B Grade Kangaroo Flat 77 had a big win over the Magpies 36, B Reserve went down 36 to 64 and the 17 and Under side were unlucky to go down to Flat 56 to 38 despite a fantastic effort across the court.

This Saturday in round 16 matches Castlemaine play host to Golden Square at the Camp Reserve and, fresh from two week's rest, the top of the table Castlemaine Women's team will welcome third placed Golden Square to the Camp on Sunday August 7 at 2.30pm.

After a pulsating battle, Macedon A-graders lowered their colours at home to second-placed Wallan in the Riddell League’s netball match of the round on Saturday.

Should the Cats be worried?

Not at all, according to vastly experienced senior playing coach Ciara Stewart.

“We were without our three top mid-courters; two were attending a wedding and the other one is in Canada,” Stewart explained after the match.

The coach explained there were good reasons for some positional moves, and Macedon is still poised to finish on top of the ladder, with a bye this Saturday and a last home and away round encounter against Western Rams., who were outclassed by Diggers Rest on Saturday.

Stewart pointed out that finishing on top is the best place to be in a final five scenario.

The pandemic wrecked the previous two seasons, but this time the finals series is scheduled and should go ahead as listed.

Stewart is looking to tall and talented Shanea Brundell to make her mark by transitioning from defence to attack.

It was Brundell’s 21st birthday on Saturday, and she played the first half as goalkeeper before switching to the other end of the court.

The Cats have a very strong core of big occasion players with proven finals records, along with some younger up and comers.

All the Cats’ four senior teams will be playing finals.

Wallan has two tough matches, against third-placed Woodend-Hesket and Diggers Rest in the last two home and away rounds.

Woodend-Hesket bounced back by doubling Melton Centrals’ score on Saturday.

Diggers Rest and Lancefield – a real improver as the season has progressed – had good wins.

A Lancefield first under lights The first ever female football match under lights was played at Lancefield on a cold Friday night.

The Lancefield Under 15 girls made the finals with a 13.15 to 1.1 victory over Melton South.

District MP Mary-Anne Thomas gave a pre-match pep talk to inspire the young Tigers, and along with Mayor Jennifer Anderson, stayed for the whole game.

“I’m thrilled that we (state government) were able to chip in the $209,000 needed to make this dream a reality,” Ms Thomas said. The shire council and junior and senior football clubs also made significant contributions.

Junior football club president Bill Balcam said the lights are so good, and suggested the next priority should be new changing rooms and facilities for Lancefield Park.

Some of the young Tigers had never

played any sport prior to trying out for footy.

Football coordinator Jacqui Green said the club hopes to have two female teams next season.

The Lancefield girls’ team is coached

by Joe Schembri who congratulated all the players on their efforts in making the finals.

He also commended Melton South on their improvement.

Goal kickers for the Lancefield side were Amy O’Meara 6, Sarah Huggins 3, Lauren Bourkouras 2, Grace Osmond and Jemma Wilkins.

Leading into the finals, which took place on Sunday, Lancefield boys’ teams had some inspiration from the Tigers’ senior coach Tom Waters, and former Melbourne star Todd Viney, now a Lancefield resident.

Hawks need a miracle Bill West

There are two home and away rounds remaining before the Riddell League’s 2022 football finals begin, and Woodend-Hesket are in fifth place, two points clear of Macedon.

To play finals the Hawks will have to win at Wallan on Saturday, a tall order given the way the Magpies demolished Macedon by 124 points at the weekend.

Yet while there’s life there’s hope, and it’s worth remembering that on April 9 in Round 2 the only draw of the season took place with Woodend-Hesket and Wallan finishing up 10.6 apiece at Gilbert Gordon Reserve.

Now it's hard to see how the Hawks can win at Greenhill Reserve on Saturday, with sixth placed Macedon receiving an automatic four points for the bye, and playing Western Rams in the last round.

Hawks’ coach Josh Pound will be looking for a big effort from his side, and one thing which has to happen is finding an answer to Wallan’s scoring power.

The Magpies have the two top goalkickers in the league in the elusive Matt Perri and Corey Grindlay – on Saturday Perri was on fire against Macedon, kicking six goals in the first quarter with great delivery from further upfield.

The Cats were depleted through a long list

of injuries, with Jason Cooke and Matthew Dick key absentees.

By half time at Tony Clarke Reserve the scoreboard showed 12.6 to 2.0, something which could not really hve been contemplated in the past few seasons when the cats won a premiership an prided themselves on being competitive.

Gisborne just miss

Gisborne A-grade netballers missed out by the narrowest of margins in a thrilling encounter against South Bendigo on Saturday. It was the closest match across all grades.

The defeat leaves Gisborne in third position, with South Bendigo fourth.

With three rounds remaining before the finals, the Bulldogs should be able to maintain third spot.

Gisborne won its other four grade matches by sizeable margins against South Bendigo.

Kyneton A-graders accounted for bottom of the ladder Golden Square, but the Tigers found Square opposition too strong in the other games.

While going down to top side Kangaroo Flat, Castlemaine A-grader have fifth place wrapped up.

Women’s football Kyneton women’s football team’s run of big wins came to an end on Sunday under lights at Golden Square’s Wade Street Oval.

The Tigers turned in a valiant effort against strong opposition, and began well with an early goal.

The home side had more depth and consistency, and this added up to a 41-point win.

It was pleasing to see the Tigers fight the match right out, playing well in the final term.

Goals came from Natalie Korinfsky, Taylah Moore, Madeleine Stott and Jen Schellekens.

The six special award winners for the Tigers were Alex Strawhorn, Terri Overstead, Jen Schellekens, Taylah Moore, Amy Campbell and Heidi Erasmus.

The Fallon Willmot Day and inaugural ‘Tigers of Old’ day will take place at the Kyneton Showgrounds on Saturday August 6 from 12pm in the club rooms.

The annual Fallon Willmot day will celebrate two of Kyneton’s greats Brendan ‘Jerka’ Fallon and John ‘Womby’ Willmot. Beginning18 years ago after the tragic passing of Brendan, a group of his close friends decided to ‘pick a home game at the footy each year to honour his memory’ and with John’s sudden passing 12 years ago the day has very much been for families and friends of both to come together to remember their lives and their contribution at the club.

Founded in 1868, the club has links to the very early foundation years of Australian football way back in the early 1860s. It has been said that Kyneton was the Victorian town where the first organised regional football match was contested. Now in 2022, the club has evolved and includes women’s senior and junior football teams and FIDA side ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.

Club president Hayden Evans said the Kyneton Football Netball Club had a proud history of players who had donned the yellow and black over the years and the club wanted to celebrate the people past and present that had made it what it was today. "If you are a past footballer, netballer, committee member or associate/volunteer then come along to be a part of this great day,” Evans said.

Tickets for the ‘Tigers of Old’ are $25 and includes welcome gift on arrival, light finger food, guest speakers ‘Tigers of Old’ and Terry Wallace. The club welcomes Berty & Co food truck to Tigerland from 5pm9pm so you can enjoy a bite to eat while being entertained by Steve Falcon and the Kingswoods.

Steve Falcon and the Kingswoods, whose members include two of Brendan Fallon’s siblings Steve and Helene and cousin Michael, had been ‘mucking’ around for years until four years ago when they decided to get everyone together and give it a real crack.

What began as a bit of fun and a novelty, has progressed into a band in demand who travel around Victoria and NSW. "It’s always great to play together given we’ve all known each other all our lives, and it is especially nice to have a home gig at Tigerland where we all played footy and netball," band member Mick Taylor said.

Gisborne too good for South Gisborne senior footballers kept on their winning way on Saturday, having their match against fourth-placed South Bendigo wrapped up by half time.

The second half at the Queen Elizabeth Oval was reasonably even, although the Bulldogs squandered some scoring chances in the last quarter.

Gisborne had a spread of goal kickers, nine getting on the board with former Riddell captain, Matt Pannucio, leading the way with three.

After a tremendous tussle on Saturday, Kyneton senior footballers lowered their colours by eight points against third-placed Golden Square.

It was a match that was close throughout the second half, and the Tigers are hanging on to fifth place on percentage from Eaglehawk.

So it’s crunch time in the 16th home and away round this Saturday, with Kyneton at home to Eaglehawk, with a large gathering anticipated at the Showgrounds.

Put simply, the winner will probably play finals, and the loser miss out in a season where ladder leader Gisborne, Strathfieldsaye and Golden Square are certain finalists, and South Bendigo should end up in fourth place.

In round 7 on May 28, Kyneton defeated the Hawks by 21 points in the middle of a six game winning streak.

Then it’s finals time, and to be in the prime position on top of the ladder is just what the southern most club in the league would have been hoping for before the start of the season.

Brook continued to dominate in the second half recording a convincing 152 point win despite the Steaders' best efforts to stem the tide.

Harcourt had a strong win over Campbells Creek in the local derby in Round 13 of the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League at the Lions den on Saturday.

Harcourt opened their account with an eight goal first term and held the Creekers to one goal.

The Lions smashed through another 10 goals in the second quarter but Creek also pegged one through at the other end of the ground.

To their credit Creek never bowed their heads and lifted to post another three goals in the third term.

But at the other end of the ground the Lions had all the answers kicking another 15 goals in the second half.

Final scores were Harcourt 8.2, 18.6, 26.9, 33.12 (210) to Campbells Creek 1.0, 2.0, 5.1, 5.1 (31) with the decisive 179 point win cementing Harcourt's position in fourth on the MCDFNL table.

At half time Trentham held a 23 point advantage.

Maldon took the game up to the Saints again in the all important third term kicking two goals to Trentham's three.

In an even final term each side kicked two goals apiece but the Saints eventually came out on top by 38 points.

The Dons can certainly hold their heads high for their performance against the in-form side.
