All workers at Castlemaine’s Don KR’s factory have been receiving testing for COVID-19 with six cases linked to the site as at midday yesterday. This scene was captured in Castlemaine on Friday.

Eve Lamb Don KR's Castlemaine factory remains temporarily closed with the company confirming six cases of coronavirus linked to the site as of yesterday.

"We have six employees from our Castlemaine production facility that have been confirmed to us as tested positive

for COVID-19," the company said in a statement provided to the Midland Express yesterday.

"The individuals are isolating at home and will continue to do so for a minimum of 14 days and until they have tested negative against COVID-19.

"Our first positive case was confirmed on Thursday July 23. We immediately

deployed our response procedure, in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services Victoria.

"On Friday, working closely with DHHS, we temporarily closed the Castlemaine production facility to undergo a deep clean and we have now almost completed the testing of our entire 1300 workforce.

goods staff is our priority and, as a responsible employer, we are taking all necessary steps to ensure we protect our workforce at this time."

The statement said the Castlemaine production facility would be reopened when DHHS confirmed it was safe to do so.

Fatal crash at Muckleford

A single vehicle accident at Muckleford on Friday evening has claimed two lives.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash that occurred about 9.40pm on Friday.

Investigators believe the Mazda sedan was travelling east on Maldon-Castlemaine Road when the driver veered from the road and crashed into a tree.

Both male occupants, a 36-year-old Baringhup man and a 27-year-old Castlemaine man, died at the scene.

The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined and the investigation remains ongoing.

Macedon Ranges has approved its 2020/21 budget with a general average rate increase of 2.5 per cent.

Several works and projects that had strong community support in the budget submission period have been awarded funding including $60,000 for stage one of a Riddells Creek Movement Network Study.

From public open space financial reserves council included the following works and projects: Wyralla Reserve stage two ($36,267); Romsey Golf Course couching, levelling and drainage work ($38,790), five new interpretive signs for Stanley Park Reserve ($9000).

Consideration of the airfield has gone before the council at least five times since 2012 and caused considerable division within the community. The most recent round of consultation attracted 126 submissions; 88 per cent of those were a positive response.

Kyneton Aero Club president Warren Canning welcomed the Master Plan, which he said was modest in its expectations and provided amenity and operational improvements to benefit the aero club, emergency services that use the ground to provide bushfire air support, other users and the broader community.

"Sealing the northern gravel runway extension will be a plus because it will reduce the amount of noise over town from aircraft taking off to the south because they'll be able to start their take-off run earlier, which means they'll be higher by the time they get to the town," Mr Canning said.

The aero club has made other efforts to reduce noise in applying to En Route Supplement Australia to prohibit non-local training flights at the Kyneton Airfield from August 13.

These training flights currently account for 16 per cent of the 5000 air movements movements at the airfield each year.

Mr Canning said there would be an opportunity for the broader community to benefit from the economic activity generated through the commercial hangars.

"Overall we're very happy with the Master Plan, and the fact that it recognises the legitimacy of the airfield and the aero club, and that they're here for the future."

The facility was developed by the former shire of Kyneton in the 1960s and has been operational since this time.

A 10-year conflict over the contentious redevelopment of the Kyneton Airfield has almost drawn to a close.

The airfield's first and long-awaited Master Plan to provide clear direction for the site got a tick of approval from Macedon Ranges Shire Council last week.

The plan includes sealing 150 metres of the northern runway extension, commercial hangars and toilet/shower amenities, but excludes a special use zoning, business/tourism hub and construction of 10-12 private aircraft storage hangars at 8 Rawson Place.

The private hangars were the main point of contention between councillors during the debate at last week's ordinary meeting.

Cr Mandi Mees said additional private hangars would assist Kyneton Aero Club in raising funds through lease arrangements.

She said the club's experienced volunteers maintained the airfield, costed at about $60,000 per annum, and funding generated there was used to maintain and operate assets. The airfield does not rely on ratepayer funds and is a cost-positive asset to the council.

"This would be prudent to assist to sustain the airfield in a fiscally responsible manner," Cr Mees said.

The aero club currently has a 20-pilot waiting list for private hangars at the site, which now has about 34 hangars housing 60 aircraft. Hangar owners and the club are now working to resolve permit issues.

Cr Mees had the support of Crs Roger Jukes and Henry Bleeck, but Cr Jennifer Anderson felt there was not enough support for a tourism hub or additional private hangars and that there were still some unknowns.

"There's that inability for me to know: if we build more private hangars, does that necessarily mean there will be an increase in use, touch-downs and air traf-

From page 1 "We anticipate that this will cause some disruption to the supply of some product lines," the company said.

"We are keeping our customers and suppliers informed and will be making every effort to keep the disruption to a minimum."

The company also confirmed it had received clearance from the Department of Health and Human Services Victoria to have a limited number of staff - "about 15 per cent of our workforce" - working at the facility on Friday until midnight, "to stabilise the plant as part of the temporary closure procedure".

"During the site's temporary closure, all employees will be paid as per their normal roster," the company said.

The Department confirmed that testing for Don KR workers had been made available at the Bendigo Health and Maryborough District Health sites.

Pop-up testing was also conducted in Castlemaine at Don KR premises on Friday with a large number of workers lining Richards Road in their vehicles during the day as they waited to go through the process. At the time of going to press yesterday, DHHS data showed just one active case in Mount Alexander Shire. Six cases had also been linked to the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre, with active cases for Macedon Ranges Shire sitting at six.

Plans have not been abandoned for Macedon's much-championed community hub despite a major cost blowout in February.

Macedon Ranges Council has allocated $92,127 in its 2020/21 budget to bridge the gap with the aim to secure grant money to complete renovation works at 47 Victoria Street. The 1940s weatherboard survived Ash Wednesday but has sat unused since December 2016, becoming dilapidated over time.

Works required include roof repairs, restumping, disability access, ramp and a building extension to accommodate appropriate toilet facilities.

The project hit a snag when a hazardous materials investigation identified concealed

asbestos and lead paint in the building, previously unknown, which also needed to be addressed.

The initial cost estimate of $186,000 to budget for the project was split between the council ($142,500) and the community ($43,500).

Council staff said five tenders were evaluated for the project but were priced above estimates to bring the building to the original proposed standard.

Macedon resident Samara Hodson pleaded the community's case to the council at its budget submission hearing earlier this month, stating the project had gained huge momentum.

The community sourced in-kind support for the build totalling $43,500 and raised a further $31,797, which would need to be returned to donors if works stopped.

"If this project does not progress, the community would be justified in feeling disappointed," she said.

Ms Hodson was part of a group of dedicated locals who rallied to save the town's treasured former maternal child health care centre from council sale last year.

Their plan was to help turn the site into a community hub with the vision of facilitating a range of activities such as a community kitchen-garden, workshops and events.

The hub would service Macedon, Mount Macedon and surrounds, with both towns previously lacking this kind of connected community space.

During May the Commonwealth Government announced a new Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program to help communities recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Council officers believe the project is eligible for this program and could meet the current project shortfall.

The additional $92,127 sought does not include the cost of the rear ramp and pathways, which have now been deferred. The cost of this work is estimated at an additional $55,000.

Mount Alexander Shire Council is encouraging residents to learn more about a new draft local law before the consultation closes on Friday.

The draft General Local Law 2020 proposes to replace the existing Local Laws No. 2 to 6 and the Local Law Procedures Manual, which are due to expire in November this year. Council is urging the community to explore the background to the proposed changes and engage in the conversation by making a submission or completing a simple online survey.

The draft local law covers laws that relate to amenity on private property and in public places, animal and waste management, the protection of infrastructure and assets, permits, and administration and enforcement.

Macedon Ranges Shire councillors have refused the proposal for 30 Brooke Street in a 6-2 vote after receiving 21 objections and six letters of support.

Branded a tourist destination, the plan included a 40-stall market, 100-patron licensed restaurant, tavern for 200 patrons and function centre for up to 365 people.

It also sought a waiver of more than 200 parking spaces which neighbouring residents have slammed as "unacceptable".

Seeking a notice of refusal, Cr Jennifer Anderson said the proposal was "at odds with what the community wants" and the planning scheme.

has safety issues, it has issues with the infrastructure required around it and amenity for the local residents, and the parking waiver is too high," she said.

"When considering other applications we may wave a few parking spots but this a large amount of parking to be waved that's going to have to occur in the surrounding streets."

Traffic, parking and the site use emerged as the key concerns for objectors neighbouring the area.

Also questioned was the level of activity proposed from 7am to anywhere from 11pm to 1am depending on the day of the week, allowing for potentially 500 people or more on site at one time.

The site is zoned industrial three, rezoned from industrial one, due to its proximity to residential areas. Nearby are two retirement villages and a childcare centre.

Cr Roger Jukes argued that council

planners had recommended approval with 35 detailed conditions to help the development fit into its surrounds.

Since the application has been advertised, the developer has proposed safety and streetscape works including footpaths, formalising existing car parking spaces and street lighting.

"This is an opportunity to develop what has been left fairly unmaintained in recent times," Cr Jukes said.

"The proposal is not considered to undermine the viability of the town's commercial core, which has a centre focus on cafes and shops whereby the proposal offers varied uses."

Cr Jukes and Cr Henry Bleeck were the only two councillors present to vote against the notice of refusal.

The applicant has the right to appeal the decision at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Gisborne's Coles supermarket was the target of an aggravated burglary last Wednesday.

Offenders entered the supermarket about 3.15am and stole a large amount of cigarettes while staff were on site before fleeing in a stolen vehicle.

With the help of the VicPol Airwing, the vehicle was followed until it was dumped in Taylors Lakes, and ground units were able to arrest several offenders.

About $40,000 worth of stolen cigarettes were located in the car from earlier burglaries on other supermarkets and service stations.

Australian flag won’t be replaced A new Flag Policy for Macedon Ranges ensures the Australian flag always flies but residents must wait to see additional council flagpoles erected for community flags.

The policy states the Australian flag will not be replaced with other flags and sets out a clear direction for use of council's flagpoles.

It follows controversial approval to substitute the Australian flag with the rainbow flag at the Woodend Memorial Clocktower last year for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.

The council will continue to consider requests for flying community flags but with clearer guidelines.

Alternate flags will primarily fly at council's Kyneton and Gisborne offices where three flagpoles display the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.

The Torres Strait Islander flag will be temporarily replaced to fly any approved alternate flags for the specified timeframe.

Woodend Neighbourhood house has put out a call for donations of material and keen sewers to help create face masks.

Face coverings are not yet mandatory in most of regional Victoria but they say many people still want to add another layer of protection, and they would love to be able to help.

A future council will decide whether to erect additional (fourth) flagpoles at Kyneton and Gisborne offices to enable a flagpole to be kept free for flying flags on request.

They will also determine if council should erect four flagpoles at Romsey and Woodend service centres to fly the Australian national flag, the Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag; and to enable a flagpole to be kept free for flying flags on request.

Also to be considered is enabling illumination of all flagpoles at night to ensure the council's compliance with Australian flag protocols.

The Flag Policy refers to flags flown at the Kyneton Town Hall, Gisborne Administration Centre, Woodend and Kyneton visitor information centres, Kyneton Mechanics Institute and Woodend Memorial Clocktower.

The council reserves the right to direct those responsible for flagpoles on other council-owned sites to remove any flag that is deemed offensive.

Light amid the COVID gloom: Federal Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters with Maldon Golf Club’s Bob Briggs, Gay Reid, Norm Madigan and Burris Keen at the front of the revamped clubhouse featuring a new all-abilities entrance.

After weeks of being hard hit by a COVID shutdown that cost it many thousands in lost revenue, Maldon Golf Club is now enjoying some light amid the gloom.

A $15,000 grant from the federal government's Stronger Communities Program has helped the little local club complete a $32,000 clubhouse upgrade - including a swish new clubhouse entrance.

It's a move that helps establish the 55-member volunteer-run club's facility as an increasingly significant community hub for Maldon - not just for golfers but for all manner of community events, functions and forums.

It comes as the club reels from the impacts of the COVID-19 lockdowns earlier this year.

"Because we weren't able to have any golf for eight weeks, we lost about $10,000 in golf fees and bar takings," club secretary Bob Briggs said.

"But our biggest loss is in fundraising.

We would have lost in excess of $26,000 in revenue."

But now the clubhouse upgrade has filled the club with optimism.

The revamped entrance features a large new automatic sliding door and wheelchair-friendly ramp access. There's also decking overlooking the scenic greens and a shade-sail sheltered upgraded outdoor area.

Fortunately the club's books were in good order before the pandemic hit and with golfers now returned to the greens, club membership has also increased.

"We were able to resume limited golf about six weeks ago and it's been buoyant," Mr Briggs said.

"Our membership has increased by 10 per cent since we resumed playing golf.

"And now that we've got our new AV (audio visual) system in it allows different groups to use it."

Visiting late last week to check out the upgrade, Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters said it was a great example of a sorely-needed stimulus project.

"It's a great time to be doing work," she said.

"It's come up a treat," the club's president Peter Gerolemou said.

Gisborne Secondary College was closed on Monday after two positive cases of COVID-19 were linked to the school over the weekend.

The first case was reported on Friday and the school was closed on Saturday as a precaution until the case could be investigated by the Department of Health and Human Services.

Principal Jon Morley advised parents on Sunday morning that the infected person had been self isolating at home and DHHS had advised it was safe for the school to reopen, but by late Sunday night Mr Morley had again contacted parents to advise of a second case, Gisborne Secondary College was closed on Monday involving a student, and a after two positive cases of COVID-19 were linked to the second school closure for school over the weekend.

The new roundabout installed at the intersection of Melbourne-Lancefield Road and Kilmore Road to improve traffic flow and safety is now fully operational.

Regional Roads Victoria will return in September to apply the final layer of asphalt and complete line marking at the Monegeetta roundabout, weather permitting.

There have been several safety improvements along the Melbourne-Lancefield Road since 2018, including installation of flexible safety barriers to the left-hand side and centre of the road to prevent head-on and run-off-road crashes.

There have been new overtaking lanes created to give drivers more opportunity to pass safely, widening and sealing road shoulders, upgrades at the intersection of Melbourne-Lancefield Road and Sutherlands Road, and rumble strips along high-risk sections of the road to warn drivers if their vehicle begins to veer from their lane.

Regional Roads Victoria has identified Melbourne-Lancefield Road, between Sunbury and Lancefield, as one of Victoria's highest-risk rural roads.

Between July 2010 and June 2015, two people lost their lives and 24 people sustained serious injuries in crashes along this stretch of road.

New grants program for community groups

Successful bid to reduce speed limit Sutton Grange residents have successfully lobbied to have the speed limit on the Bendigo-Sutton Grange Road within the township reduced from 100km/h to 80km/h.

The local community has been lobbying for the change for 20 years.

Mount Alexander Shire Council submitted a request to Regional Roads Victoria to reduce the speed limit, following consideration of a recent petition to council that contained 128 signatures, and RRV approved the request.

Council acknowledged safety concerns raised by residents and supported the view that a speed limit reduction would improve road user and resident safety, without significantly impacting traffic flow or driver journey times.

New speed restriction signs will be installed in the next few weeks.

Sutton Grange resident Chris Moule said he was hopeful the change would encourage motorists to slow down through the village.

"We've had a few minor accidents and lots of near misses. People fail to stop at the stop signs, they speed, they cross the double lines," he said.

"We've got a lot of young families out here now, and older residents, and we want it to be safer for all."

Fellow resident Steve Barty Snr agreed.

"I'm very happy that we've had a win.

It's something we've been wanting for 20

years. We've had a few little bingles, but we are very fortunate that there has not been a major accident," he said.

Mr Barty said he hoped community members, council and the local landcare group could also work together to look at some pruning or tree removal works to improve visibility for motorists.

"We get a lot of transports along here.

It is essential that we improve visibility as much as possible to ensure motorists get a good view of oncoming traffic before attempting to cross or turn into the roadway," he said.

Calder Ward councillor Tony Cordy said it was a positive outcome for the community.

"The new reduced speed limit will help residents in the township feel safer and will also increase the safety of pedestrians and drivers," he said.

Council's director of infrastructure and development Jess Howard said council was pleased to have worked in partnership with the community and Regional Roads Victoria to achieve the outcome they were hoping for.

"This initiative really highlights council's commitment to improving access to a range of safe travel choices for the community," she said.

Council and RRV share responsibility for the management of roads within Mount Alexander Shire, with the Bendigo-Sutton Grange Road being managed by council.

Gym owner fined

The owner of a gym in Hume was issued a $9913 fine for continuing to operate in breach of chief health officer directions for lockdown areas.

The man was one of 101 people fined for breaching CHO coronavirus directions last Friday. Of those people fined were 16 offences for failing to wear a face covering when leaving home in lockdown areas for one of the four approved reasons.

The Victorian Government is offering a new grants program to support local initiatives that help communities stay connected during the coronavirus pandemic.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas welcomed the opening of applications for the Let's Stay Connected Fund, with grants available for community organisations, local government bodies, incorporated notfor-profits and industry groups.

Bushfire safety boost The 900-strong rural community of Malmsbury can feel safer from the impact of bushfires and other emergencies thanks to a new solar and battery system that provides full protection from power outages.

Installed on the Malmsbury CFA Fire Station through the MASH solar bulk-buy, the 10.54kW solar power and Tesla Powerwall 2 battery system ensures that if the grid goes down in the event of a bushfire or storm, Malmsbury Fire Brigade will have the power it needs to respond.

Facilitated by the Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance, the system is funded by a grant from Bank Australia and contributions from the brigade and through CVGA's MASH Community Solar Bulk Buy program.

This system demonstrates how solar and battery storage can help protect communities from the threat of bushfires.

"During emergency events it is common for the electricity grid to go down, making it harder for organisations like the CFA to respond," said Rob Law, executive officer at the Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance.

"This solar and battery system is designed to operate if the grid goes down and will enable Malmsbury Fire Brigade

to maintain critical functions during an emergency.

"This is what we call local energy resilience, and something we think is a big opportunity for our region. Not only does it provide greater protection from the threat of bushfires and storms but it saves on power bills and reduces greenhouse gas emissions."

Brigade captain Tony Stephens said it was a great result for the Malmsbury community.

"It ensures we can operate and respond from the fire station during a power outage and it can also be a hub for the community at the same time," Capt Stephens said.

"We see the results of climate change through more intense and frequent storms and fires, and being able to reduce our carbon footprint and reduce emissions is important for our members and our community.

"This is a great example of the community, local interest groups and industry working together to reduce the impacts of fires and other emergencies, aid recovery and do our bit to reduce the impacts of climate change."

Speedy Miss Vista, a real flying machine with white feet and face, attracted a cult following, but ongoing feet problems curtailed her career, and she was euthanised in 2018, being buried at Glenfern Park where she was bred.

SYDNEY BEGINNINGS George Osborne did not come into the racing game in a traditional way, and his road to becoming a trainer generated plenty of interest.

His father was a lawyer, and attending race meetings. He often represented friends and others who owned horses and were regulars at Sydney tracks when racing was booming.

These were the days of leviathan bookmaker Bill Waterhouse, and his son Rob Waterhouse, who Osborne eventually worked for.

Osborne's judgement and opinion on horses became sought after on race days, and he recalls accompanying a couple of very big punters to country tracks including Wyong and Dubbo, to cast his eye over the runners.

Eventually he decided he would like to become a trainer, and approached leading Sydney trainer Clarry Connors, of Golden Slipper winning fame.

Osborne effectively did a five-year 'apprenticeship' with Connors, and was proud to receive his trainer's licence on his first application.

He trained at Kembla Grange initially, with success, and later moved on to Rockhampton and the Gold Coast.

Utilising talented young riders Like Zac Purton and Michael Rodd on his gallopers paid off.

In Victoria, Linda Meech has a great strike rate for Osborne, and he was not surprised to see her win the Victorian jockeys' premiership.

The trainer is a strong advocate for using young apprentices, both male and female, on many of his gallopers. He also selectively places his gallopers at provincial tracks, and is looking to racing to return to normal so he can travel to southern NSW for some of the country cups. Osborne is keen on Seeress, a quiet, plain filly who won impressively at her second raced start earlier this month. Her next start is expected to be in city company.

Reine Happy, who turns nine on August 1, is a stable favourite, with 12 wins, numerous placings, and nearly $215,000 in stakes.

"Happy birthday to all the horses," Osborne said, looking forward to another successful racing season.

DRY IN JULY For the second year in a row, George Osborne is taking part in the Dry in July campaign, with proceeds going to the cancer department at Bendigo Hospital.

He is matching any donations in his name, and thanks all who have been generous for this cause. Details are on the Dry in July website.

George Osborne arrived in Kyneton 12 years ago from Queensland with strong training credentials, and began with 10 horses in his stable and plenty of time to play golf as well.

Osborne Racing now has about 100 gallopers on the books, and Osborne is ranked in the top 20 trainers in the state, and 12th in Country Victoria as the 2019-2020 season draws to a close. He has chalked up 43 winners, equalling last season's effort in Victoria, when he also won several races interstate.

Now golf's well and truly on the backburner, with a large contingent of stable clients and their thoroughbreds the number one priority (Osborne was a very talented golfer, playing from a handicap of 1 at one stage).

From a business perspective, Osborne Racing is a big 'plus' for Kyneton and the Macedon Ranges, with 20 on the payroll - then there's the flow-on benefits.

When they're not in full racing mode, many of the stable's gallopers spend time at Glenfern Park at Romsey. Osborne also has a close association with Langdon Thoroughbred Racing, on the Woodend-Tylden Road. This family enterprise breeds and owns gallopers, and Adam Langdon's produce store in Woodend is well utilised for fodder and racing essentials.

Veterinarians and farriers are also beneficiaries.

Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club is pleased to have such a mainstay trainer using its facilities. With nearly 30 years' training experience behind him, Osborne admits he did not expect his Kyneton setup would grow to such a stage similar to what he had at the Gold Coast and Rockhampton.

"People just kept knocking on my door," he said, explaining how the local enterprise had gradually built up.

Generally regarded as an astute, meticulous trainer, with a keen eye for detail, Osborne regularly attends yearling sales, looking for what he considers value-for-money gallopers.

He acknowledged the support received from so many loyal owners and said with the COVID-19 virus appearing he wondered about the future of about 15 young horses he had purchased --- but owners, many new to the industry, have bought into them.

Osborne said it had been a tough time (for owners) but they understood. Due to the pandemic owners have been barred from city meetings and have limited access to provincial races. With hundreds of winners behind him, Osborne has a very time-consuming work-

Horses August 1st

Time to celebrate our equine friends August 1 is the official birthday for all horses born in the Southern Hemisphere. In the Northen Hemisphere, it's January 1.

The date in each part of the world was first decided for thoroughbreds and linked to the breeding season of each area.

It's a set date so for events such as racing and now other competitions, horses can have a standard level of comparison for various reasons. It's also thought that it was introduced because of the historical lack of records of the animals' actual birthdays.

If a horse is born late July, chances are that it's birth won't be recorded but 'kept in the back paddock' until after August 1 because even though it might only be a few days old, come the first of August and that little foal could officially be considered one year old!

Anyway, come this Saturday and it's out with those carrot cakes because every neddy Australia wide will be having a birthday!

Dental and oral problems are very common in horses and many of these conditions can lead to changes in behaviour, chronic pain and reduced performance.

The Australian Taxation Office has so far received over 1.7 million individual 2020 returns, an increase of 12 per cent for the same period last year.

Assistant Ccommissioner Karen Foat noted that despite needing to process a record number of tax returns, tax refunds have begun arriving in bank accounts.

“We saw the biggest July 1 ever, with ATO staff hard at work to ensure we could receive over 740,000 online lodgments on the day, ranging from income tax returns, to early release of super and JobKeeper applications.

This is up from just over 100,000 online lodgments across our channels on July 1 last year,” Ms Foat said.

“More than $1 billion has hit around 457,000 taxpayers bank accounts. Most returns that are lodged electronically are processed within two weeks so refunds for the first returns lodged will continue to be issued into the first half of next week,” Ms Foat said.

Taxpayers wanting to check the progress of their return can do so by logging onto myGov and clicking through to the ATO or contacting their registered tax agent.

“So far, we’re looking at a record-breaking tax time in terms of lodgement numbers, but one thing we don’t want to see is a recordbreaking number of easily avoidable errors.

These errors slow down returns or might lead to an unexpected debt down the track.

“While we’re pleased that many early lodgers are getting it right, there are some trends in

Millions in illicit tobacco up in smoke The Australian Taxation Office seized and destroyed more than 131 tonnes of illicit tobacco in the 2019-20 financial year, representing estimated excise loss of $171 million. This includes activity undertaken by the ATO as part of the Illicit Tobacco Taskforce.

With the assistance of New South Wales Police, Victoria Police, Queensland Police and Australian Border Force, ATO officers executed 19 search warrants and uncovered over 184 acres of illicit tobacco growing in hot spots across regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.

The largest single seizure was in Lake Bolac in Victoria, with the ATO, Victoria Police and Australian Border Force officers locating 31.4 acres of tobacco, seizing and destroying 28 tonnes worth approximately $36.6 million in lost excise.

All up in Victoria for 2020 far, 76.15 acres of tobacco crops have been destroyed while dry weight tobacco in the form of picked crops and cigarettes amounted to 57,800 kilograms. The excise forgone on this lot from Victoria is $75.5 million.

A total of 65 tonnes worth approximately $85 million was seized and destroyed in New South Wales and eight tonnes worth $10 million in Queensland.

ATO assistant commissioner Ian Read said these outcomes demonstrate the ATO’s commitment to disrupting organised crime syndicates that produce and supply illegal tobacco for sale on the black market in Australia.

“The trade in illicit tobacco products in Australia has widespread negative consequences across the community,” Mr Read said.

“Tobacco growing operations are not run by small producers or farmers. They are run by organised crime syndicates who deliberately engage in illegal activities to fund their extravagant lifestyles and other criminal activity.”

“We’re finding crops in regional and remote areas of the country, being grown on land being leased from unsuspecting owners under the guise of growing vegetables,” he said.

“A number of these operations were as a result of tip-offs from concerned members of the community, and I urge people to keep reporting any activity they suspect may involve the production of illicit tobacco.

Public tip-offs build on the intelligence we gather from a range of sources and help us to identify, seize and destroy these illicit crops before they are harvested and sold on the black market.”

Signs to look out for include intense labour production between

November and May, suspicious enquiries about land for lease, unexplained use of water resources and large crops of leafy plants that may resemble kale, cabbage or corn.

Illicit Tobacco Taskforce The ATO is part of the ITTF that is led by the Australian Border Force. The ITTF was established on July 1 2018 to investigate, prosecute and dismantle organised crime groups who use the proceeds of illicit tobacco to fund other criminal activity, as well as ensure the appropriate revenue is paid to the Australian Government.

Australian Border Force, Special Investigations Commander Greg Linsdell, said the ITTF is dedicated to disrupting the supply of illicit tobacco and dismantling the criminal syndicates that support the illicit trade.

“As at 30 June 2020, the ITTF has effected the seizure of more than 75 tonnes of smuggled tobacco and approximately 361 million smuggled cigarettes. This is equivalent to over $399 million in evaded duty,” said Special Investigations Commander Linsdell.

Illicit tobacco costs the Australian community $647 million in lost revenue each year. It takes vital money away from the community and places it directly in hands of organised crime groups.

It has been illegal to grow tobacco in Australia for more than a decade. If convicted, growing tobacco carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment.

Copying and pasting last year’s deductions “One concerning trend we’re seeing, is people increasing deductions where they’ve spent more, like working from home, but forgetting to reduce claims in areas they have cut spending.

“We know that more people have been working from home, working reduced hours or unfortunately not working at all. So, if you aren’t travelling for work, you can’t claim travel expenses. If you aren’t wearing your work uniform, you can’t claim laundry expenses.

Forgetting to include some income “The most common mistake we see with early lodgers is forgetting to report all their income.

“We automatically include income information in your return from employers, banks, private health insurers, and government agencies. For most people this information is ready by the end of July. If you’re lodging early, it’s crucial you check this information is there and manually add it if it’s not.

“While we try to include as much as possible, we are asking taxpayers to add any amounts that aren’t automatically included to your return.

This includes cash wages, foreign sourced income, or even gains from cryptocurrency,” Ms Foat said.

“Leaving out income can delay your return, particularly when we receive those income details from third parties whilst we are processing your return. Unfortunately, we can confirm that approximately one in five people who lodged early won’t be getting their refunds in the first batches out because they didn’t take the time to include this income.

Working from home shortcut extended to September 30 2020 As working from home due to COVID-19 has continued for some people into the new financial year, the ATO is reassuring taxpayers that the short cut method of 80 cents per hour will continue to be available to work out your claims until September 30 2020.

Designing Caps in Visual Communication

A monthly feature supplied by the students of Sacred Heart College showcasing all matters important to our younger generation

Students have the opportunity to participate in an Arts and Technology elective each semester while in Year 7 and 8, experiencing eight different Arts/ Technology subjects over the two years.

This year in Semester One, we both had Visual Communication (Vis Com) and Design & Technology. Vis Comm is a subject that teaches students how to represent information effectively with graphic design, art, images and many

other forms of communication. Design & Technology teaches students the basic skills of designing products and using the tools in the Woodwork Room to build and make things.

For our final Vis Com assessment task we were required to create a design which would be placed on a baseball cap.

The design had to include two animals merged together. These animals had to meet a certain criteria; any two animals

Awards Assembly Goes Virtual

by Anna M, Year 8 On Thursday 16 July, the College had its biannual Academic Awards Assembly. In this assembly the top 10 students who have met the criteria (dedication to study, a strong work ethic, living the Mercy values and overall academic excellence) were presented with their awards. At this same assembly, one student from each year level was awarded the SOSH Award (the ‘Spirit of Sacred Heart’ Award). This student is selected by teachers and is determined by the student’s ability to follow the school’s Mercy Values.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the assembly was not able to be held in its usual manner. Instead, it was held ‘virtually’ using Zoom. Members of the Junior Cabinet independently planned and ran the whole assembly. This involved behind the scenes setup and running of six computers throughout the event (with a team of students assisting with AV, coordinated by Year 9 students Nic and Will).

During the assembly the students managed the logistics of the onscreen presentation bringing, members of the College Leadership Team into the Zoom to announce the award recipients, and providing extra commentary to ensure all flowed seamlessly. Each Homeroom was able to see the broadcast projected via their teacher’s laptop, and congratulate students on their achievements.

Parents were also able to tune in and watch the assembly take place.

with either fur or feathers. It was super fun designing the cap with a variety of texta, paint, chalk and crayons to make the cap unique and colourful! Faith designed a cap with a seahorse and a dinosaur and Bella chose a flamingo and a turtle!

We both really enjoyed our electives last semester, and we can’t wait to start Food Technology and Digital Technology for Terms 3 and 4!

Anatomy of an Eyeball

by Meg S, Year 8 As part of a unit on the five human senses, Year 8 Science classes recently dissected bull’s eyeballs. After researching how eyeballs work, the students were able to participate in a hands-on dissection. The eyeballs were bought from the local meatworks, Hardwicks, in Kyneton. The dissection provided a great opportunity to see the parts of the eye and understand more about how it is constructed.

“The lens was super delicate and transparent. It was fascinating how all the components worked together.”

Book review: Gods & Angels by David Park

Gods & Angels, with a title like this, you would expect some sort of religious/historical book. Well… you’re wrong. For starters, this is actually a little compilation of short stories – and they’re all focused around the little moments in life where you can realise something that helps you to see things in a different light. Some of the stories follow a man who gets befriended by some older men, who teach him to swim (since he doesn’t know how); a boy on his last visit to his mother in a small seaside town on boxing day; and a couple who divorced and chose to both start a blog. These stories are very beautifully written, but if none of this is convincing you it’s a good book, then here are snippets of the reviews: “he writes with both grace and muscularity… stirs deep recognition in the reader” (Joseph O’Connor); “moves effortlessly between generations, ideas and dramatic constructs… Park is to be commended” (John Boyne, which is a name most would recognise). Aside from the respecting the reviews mentioned and the stories, there is something in this book which I found quite beautiful – there are two quotes, sitting on the page before the contents. They are a bible quote of Genesis 2:7, and an excerpt from Hamlet, Act 2 Scene 2. To me, this was a wonderful touch to the book. If you’re looking for a simple read, or a read which provides insight into multiple lives, then I would highly recommended this book for you.

Take covid rules seriously Take the new COVID-19 rules seriously - that’s the message from the Rural Doctors Association of Victoria who have expressed their support of the latest round of requirements from the Victorian and NSW governments.

From midnight last Wednesday, Victorians are only able to cross the border into NSW for very limited purposes including education, medical care or employment - and even then, with strict underlying requirements.

RDAV president Dr Megan Belot - who lives and works at Echuca, one of the NSW-Victoria border towns impacted by the new restrictions - said there were very good reasons for them.

“While I completely understand community concerns about the further restricted border closures, they are absolutely necessary to keep this virus under control,” she said.

“We are all Australians - we do not want to see what has happened in Victoria take hold in NSW. The harder border closures are an important strategy in trying to keep coronavirus from spreading.

“We all need to do our bit to keep a lid on the virus.”

Dr Belot added that those in the Melbourne and Mitchell Shire lockdown zones, who thought they were being clever by escaping to regional Victoria or interstate, could only be described as ‘Dumb and Dumber’.

“They are just as likely to be the super spreaders who bring down one of our rural communities, or lock down the whole of Victoria or another state,” she said.

“There is nothing clever about flouting the rules.

“The rules are there to help protect us from the virus, and to limit our capacity to infect others if we have it.

“The rules are there to help avoid a catastrophic situation, where our hospital system is overwhelmed with critical patients and we cannot treat everybody.

“This is not just a virus that is impacting older Australians - a number of patients in their 30s are now in intensive care. This should be a big warning bell for those who think their own needs are more important.”

Dr Belot welcomed the Victorian Government’s expansion of public health units and coronavirus testing sites in regional Victoria, adding this would be crucial in helping to keep a lid on COVID-19 in rural parts of the state.

“We also fully support the government’s recommendations about wearing masks in regional Victoria, particularly where there has been some community transmission of the virus and where social distancing is difficult,” she said.

“While the government and chief health officer make the official recommendations, we believe that staying home where possible, minimising contact with those outside your immediate family, and only going into the wider community for the essential things, can reduce your risk of contracting COVID-19 - and so may be measures you might like to consider...”

Regional and rural Victorians are advised to follow these guidelines to stay safe: * Whenever you can, ensure you are social distancing - by staying at least 1.5 metres away from others * Cough and sneeze into a tissue (then discard the tissue and wash your hands) or into your elbow * Hand wash and hand sanitise frequently * If you need to go out into the wider community, consider wearing a mask - particularly if you think it will be difficult to achieve social distancing * If you have even the slightest cough or flu symptom, get tested for COVID-19 and self

isolate - at the very least until you get your test result (and then remain in self isolation if your test result is positive) “These are trying times for all Victorians, but following the rules not only gives us the best chance of getting back to a ‘new normal’ sooner rather than later - but even more importantly, to save lives.”

CHRH is based locally in the Macedon Ranges and Hepburn shires and is a proud provider of packages and a range of home care services to these local communities.

Some older people may need a hand with shopping, personal care, nursing care or odd jobs around your home.

CHRH is there to help. Their experienced and qualified case managers are there to ensure things are manageable for you. Why CHRH? The health service meets all the quality standards set by the government and has been providing packages for many years to the local community.

Its care providers practice consumer-directed care and also have the Rainbow Tick to ensure they are respectful of the needs of LGBTIQ older people.

How do you get a Home Care Package?

The first step is to call CHRH and they can check to see if you are eligible for a government-funded Home Care Package.

If you are not eligible but still need some assistance, they may be able to organise basic level services for you or offer you privately funded services.

If you are eligible for a package, they can then help you with the My Aged Care registration process and provide you with information and advice.

If you already have a Home Care Package, they can assist you to transfer your package to CHRH. What services can be provided with a Home Care Package?

Firstly, CHRH must provide you with a level of case management that meets your needs. There is a charge for this depending upon the level of your package. Equine Assisted Therapy Black Horse Therapies offers therapy that is ideal for many individuals and numerous personal situations. Many people feel more comfortable in the peaceful setting of a horse yard than in an office. Equine Assisted Therapy has been found to be beneficial to those with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, to name but a few, said therapist Elizabeth Hannah.

Horse yard reflections “This therapeutic approach involves interacting with a horse and then reflecting on the experience,” Elizabeth said.

“This reflection may be done verbally by the participant, but there is never any pressure on them to put their experiences into words. It may be done through listening to the observations of the therapist and support person attending the session, or privately at home. It may be done through writing or drawing.” (Sometimes sessions at Black Horse Therapies involve the participant drawing and listening while Elizabeth and the support person share their observations of what happened in the horse yard.)

New stories of identity “These observations and reflections form the story of what took place in the yard,” Elizabeth said.

“The participant often discovers that they have strengths and abilities - such as being gentle, patient and caring or being assertive and a strong leader - which they, and others, were unaware of.

These stories allow the person to form a new sense of how they see themselves and to build self-esteem and confidence.”

Emotional regulation During activities with horses, participants experience a sense of safety and connection in a situation that they may initially have found challenging.

They practise finding a place of calm through focusing on the horse and perhaps through regulating their breathing. They are gently encouraged to be aware of their emotions and their stress level before, during and after their time in the horse yard.

Focusing on the horse is often calming in itself,” Elizabeth said.

“What is learned in the horse yard can then flow on to other relationships and situations in the person’s life.”

of another’s state and the effect their own internal state (feelings of calm, happiness, excitement, anxiety, anger, etc.) is having on them. The horse will always respond authentically, giving clear and non-judgemental feedback.

Elizabeth said that participants were coached in how to read the horse’s signals and body language. The ways horses show us that they are feeling comfortable and safe include dropping their head, licking and chewing or yawning.

“We have a lot of yawning in our yard! This gives the person a sense of acceptance and safety and can improve self-worth.”

Unexpected calm and focus “My experience in the horse yard with young people and children who experience anxiety and have difficulty regulating their emotions, has been consistent. They have shown gentleness and been able to calm themselves in a way that has often surprised and moved their parents/carers.

Children whose concentration is found to be poor in other settings often demonstrate great care and attention when working with the horses, for example, grooming them.

"While we are closed to visitors, if you are coming in for an X-ray, surgery or a pre-arranged and authorised visit on compassionate grounds, you will be given a hospital mask to wear for the duration of your visit."

"If you arrive wearing a home made mask you will be asked to remove this and use the hospital mask to ensure the safety of our staff and others. This will be a requirement for entry into the health service," Susan says.

This week the Victorian Government has asked everyone who lives in metropolitan Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire to wear a face covering when they leave home to reduce the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).

In the Mount Alexander Shire, and indeed any region of Victoria other than the Mitchell Shire or metropolitan Melbourne, we are being asked to wear one when we leave home and social distancing is not possible. For example when we're shopping, catching public transport or visiting the doctor.

The wearing of masks was not advocated in the early stages of the pandemic, but Susan Wyatt, who is currently overseeing infection control at Castlemaine Health, says we now understand more about the virus and what will make a difference.

"New research around face masks specific to COVID-19 has shown they have an effect in reducing transmission," she says.

"The best way to protect against COVID-19 is still staying home when you feel unwell, keeping 1.5 metres apart, washing your hands often and coughing or sneezing into your elbow or a tissue."

"Masks are a second line of defence when we can't maintain social distance.

They add a helpful, additional protective physical barrier, but social distancing is still the number one thing."

What kind of mask?

Any face covering needs to cover both your nose and mouth. A mask can be disposable or a re-useable one made of cloth.

Disposable masks need to be discarded after each use. If you're going to make your own or purchase a cloth mask the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) recommends they are made of three layers.

- An outer layer of water-resistant fabric like polyester or polypropylene (eg. reusable 'green' shopping bags or exercise clothing) - A middle layer of a cotton polyester blend or polypropylene (eg. clothing or more of the green shopping bag material from the outer layer) - An inner layer of water-absorbing fabric like cotton - Ear loops made of elastic, string or cloth strips.

Important - Check the tag to confirm the type of material - Make sure all materials are intact, have not worn too thin or have holes in them - A reversible cloth mask is not advisable.

- Facial hair will compromise the effectiveness of any mask and may not provide protection.

- Remember, any face mask or covering is better than none. This includes a scarf or bandana.

Social distancing will still allow for a cosy atmosphere with background music. Social hour is from 5.30pm - 6.45pm with dinner sit down at 7pm.

There are additional dishes on the dinner menu, some served with roast potatoes because the wood-fired oven makes the best roast potatoes. Along with their wood-fired pizzas and regular menu, they will even be offering a grilled hamburger as well as a few new options including new entrees.

Where has my Certificate of Title gone?

Have you purchased a property recently and felt odd not having a shiny piece of paper to show for it?

If so, you're not alone.

In April 2020, Land Victoria stopped issuing paper titles upon registration of all property dealings and began issuing electronic Certificates of Title (eCT) only.

Since the change, the team at Casa Conveyancing have received feedback from some clients that they felt nervous about not having the physical piece of paper to represent their landholding. However, Paula Bibby, conveyancer, confirms that to date, the system has worked very well. 'The advantage of having an eCT is that there is no danger of titles being misplaced, lost or destroyed because they can easily be traced back to the CT Controller', she says.

Electronic titles are not new. In September 2016, all of the major banks commenced replacement of paper certificates of title with electronic certificates.

One month later, Land Victoria conducted a bulk

conversion of Certificates of Title from paper to electronic certificates.

Since then, thousands of Certificates of Title have been converted to electronic titles upon lodgement at Land Victoria for the registration of a dealing, for example upon a transfer of the land or registration of a mortgage. When an eCT is issued by Land Victoria, control of the title is held by the CT Controller. If a bank has a mortgage over the property, then the bank is the CT Controller, or if a conveyancer has completed a conveyance of the land and no bank was involved, then the conveyancer is noted as the CT Controller.

An eCT can easily be identified when conducting a title search of the property because it is notated in the Administrative Notices section. This section also identifies who holds CT Control of the title.

Why aren't we listening to the experts about climate change in a similar way to how we are dealing with COVID-19?

Likewise, climate change and global warming pose threats to humanity's health and wellbeing.

The ferocity of the fires that burnt so fiercely for months along the east coast of Australia has been a wake-up call for what to expect in future summers. The devastation to property, forests and wildlife sent shock waves around the world.

Scientists tell us to expect more such extreme weather events as the temperature rises. Heat waves, drought, fires and rising sea levels will cause havoc to humanity and the planet on which we depend.

We face a dangerous future if we don't act decisively to reduce carbon emissions.

We as humans are intrinsically linked to the natural world and when it suffers, humanity will also suffer. We may already be close to the tipping point. There is no time for inaction and political prevarication.

The opportunity to develop renewable energy as an alternative to further development of harmful fossil fuels, offers a positive way to recover from the recession caused by the pandemic.

Investment in renewables is widely supported by scientists, economists and businesses alike.

Should we not listen to these people who are leaders in their fields, like we listen to doctors and health experts to keep us safe from COVID-19?

At the Macedon Ranges Shire Council June meeting it was decided to once again put forward the proposal of expanding the Gisborne Business Park all the way out to Saunders Road, New Gisborne.

I don't think council is listening to its residents, as locals have already sent in numerous submissions, more than 300 ratepayers signed a petition and many more residents completed a survey advising council of their thoughts on this proposal, and that they do not want this to go ahead.I understand that council is wishing to create employment for local people, but cannot for the life of me understand their wishes for it to be on Saunders Road along the eastern entrance into New Gisborne.

Surely local people come first and come before big business and commercial profits.

Indeed, if these commercial developers wish to build in the area, why not have a central plaza within the Business Park, rather than a blindingly visible commercial development along our entrance to New Gisborne. Do we want large car parks and buildings greeting us as we drive into New Gisborne or do we want to retain our present neighbourhood character. After all didn't we make this area our home for the very reason that we love the look and feel of the town - if we wanted 'in your face' city life we would have chosen to live elsewhere. Council is not keeping to its rules and regulations in relation to maintaining our valued rural character and to contribute to attractive township edges and gateways. This proposal is far from attractive!

I have written to council asking them to put forward some alternative ideas rather than this monstrosity along Saunders Road.

I ask our local residents and ratepayers to be aware that this proposal is again raising its ugly head. Please voice your objections by writing to our councillors. Watch the local papers for further information and get ready for what appears to be an ongoing battle.

Risk too high Margaret Griffin, Castlemaine I am writing to express my dismay at the inability to provide safe COVID-19 testing for residents who cannot travel independently in Mount Alexander Shire.

Recently, my friend who does not drive needed be tested for coronavirus because she had mild symptoms. When the booking for the test was made, my friend was advised that there were no arrangements in place for her to be tested at home. She was also advised she could not use a taxi to attend Botanical Gardens Health as taxis would not accept bookings from patients who were attending COVID-19 testing. She would need to arrange for a friend to drive her to the clinic.

I drove my friend to the clinic so she could get tested.

As I sat in the car with my friend and watched the health worker in full protective gear move among the vehicles performing the tests, it was brought home to me that the risk of infection was too high for an unprotected health worker.

The risk of infection is too high for taxi drivers yet friends of patients are being asked to provide transport to appointments.

The Victorian government is currently urging anyone with symptoms of coronavirus, however mild, to get tested. My friend was wanting to do the right thing in getting tested but could not travel independently to the appointment. Her choice of friends who drive is limited. Most of us are elders and in my case, I have an underlying health condition that means I am more vulnerable should I become infected.

I spoke to a representative of Botanical Gardens Health who explained there were simply not the resources to provide home screening.

Castlemaine Health is also not providing home screening via the District Nursing Service due to lack of resources.

Given the alarming community spread of the coronavirus in Victoria, I urge the Department of Health and Human Services Victoria to provide the necessary resources so a home testing service can be provided.

A strengthened CFA Lisa Neville, Minister for Police and Emergency Services I'd like to take the opportunity to respond to the recent Midland Express article, 'Unrest as new chapter opens' (June 30, 2020).

With the establishment of Fire Rescue Victoria, we're creating a modern fire service, bringing all paid firefighters across the state into one organisation.

Change can be difficult and as our reforms take effect, I know that there have been concerns in some sections of the community. There has been some speculation that volunteers will not continue to be called out in FRV districts and I want to give my full assurance that volunteer firefighters will absolutely continue to play a central role in the day to day provision of fire prevention and suppression activities in the 38 integrated fire station areas.

For the majority of volunteers, nothing will change under Fire Rescue Victoria our reforms impact on the 38 integrated brigades and the remaining 1200 will continue as they always have.

As a strengthened volunteer firefighting CFA, they'll continue to provide a valuable service to their communities, including vital day to day support as well as surge capacity for campaign or other major fire events.

Their local knowledge is imperative to community safety and they will continue to provide their skills and expertise alongside FRV career firefighters. Our legislation also enshrines in law the ongoing role of volunteer firefighters and the requirements of the CFA to continue to support, train and retain volunteers.

We've recently backed that up with a $126M investment for the CFA to go towards critical training and equipment.

We have not undertaken these reforms lightly. Between February and March 2020,

54 engagement workshops were held with more than 1330 volunteers, with all volunteers at integrated stations invited.

As Minister, my priority is to ensure that the community has the best fire services it can possibly have, by supporting both FRV and CFA to be the best organisations they can possibly be.

Versatile housing options Sherene Clow, Castlemaine It is with concern that Mount Alexander Shire Council's proposed Local Laws do not include specific regulations on Tiny Homes.

If Tiny Homes come under Section 13, Camping on Private Property, then some changes will be required.

Section 13 states that camping on any property be for no longer than 21 days without a permit. If a permit is issued, after vigorous conditions are met, then it is only issued for a period of six months, before another permit is required.

These conditions are important considerations, which include waste management, the protection of wildlife, and the adequacies of suitable cooking, cleaning and personal hygiene.

That being said, if those conditions are met, surely this then provides a step towards a more affordable housing option in our shire. It seems like a specific regulation would be needed to extract this from Section 13, as this a very different consideration to 'camping'.

This could in fact be an ecological and financially sensible solution to student accommodation, retiree downsizing and multigenerational living rather than a multiple income stream for a different type of Airbnb.

I think a wider discussion on how Tiny Houses fit and what they could offer needs to be had before laws are passed that negatively impact their potential.

COVID responsibilities not hysteria Michael Johnston, Castlemaine It may be easy to point the finger at strangers, such as requesting they do not enter our municipality, when looking for ways to remain COVID-safe, but we also have a responsibility to ensure we are doing all we can.

Thankfully, there are now more people in Mount Alexander Shire wearing masks, but still a number of businesses that aren't enforcing 'maximum numbers' in their premises based on one person/four square metres or minimum distances of 1.5 metres between customers.

Well done to those businesses that are now requiring their staff to wear masks if they cannot socially isolate!

Recent information about new cases in Victoria suggests that 80 per cent are workplace based and the majority of regional cases are the result of people travelling into Melbourne for work and then returning to their regional home. So, the cases are not being brought into regional municipalities

by Melbournians but by people who need to travel to Melbourne for work.

Finger pointing and blaming will not help in our fight to minimise the spread of coronavirus. Following recommended health guidelines and helping others to do so in our community will keep us healthier.

If you know a shopkeeper who could do with some help to prepare their premises to be 'best practice' COVID-safe, they would probably appreciate your help. Providing masks for neighbours who might be struggling to find masks would be a great way to strengthen community ties.

Our street is linked by a social media app that helps us to go shopping for immuno-suppressed neighbours or to share home-grown produce. It is easy and immensely satisfying. Let's see how we can use our energies positively to help our community rather than looking for scapegoats.

Mount Alexander is a great place to live.

Kyneton golf There were early finishes for all participants in the second round of Kyneton Golf Club's singles knockout on Saturday.

Scores: Jonah Harris d Trevor Glanfield 8/7, Louis Thompson d Damian Summers 5/4, Barry Murphy d Noel Alldis 4/3, Glenn Cook d Graham Hackett 4/3, Mat Hodgkiss d Paul Moor 2/1, Russell Turner d Nick Williamson 3/1, Chris Ganim d Karel Turang 4/3, David Moore d Russell Bramich 4/2.

Neil Watts (handicap 25) won the individual stableford with 34 points, from Mark Sciberas 33.

Robyn MacRae (31) was the women's winner with 33.

Nearest pins went to Ross Foreman, Jesper Hansen and Denise Murphy, David Moore and Louis Thompson (also super pin).

Scott Murphy was in exceptional form in Wednesday's stableford, shooting 43 points from a 10 handicap. Neil Watts was runnerup on 36, and NTP. Frank Evans won the nine-hole event with 12 points.

Tuesday ladies: A grade went to Judy Quick with 33 points, four clear of Marg Scoble and Denise Murphy, and Marian Orr topped B grade with 34, from Bron Dwyer 33.

Nine holes: Helen Claverdon Jones 21 from Jan Laidlaw 18. Balls went to Orr, Quick, Dwyer, Scoble, Murphy and MacRae.

Romsey golf Clear skies with no wind and mid-winter sun welcomed players in Romsey Golf Club's monthly medal event on Saturday.

And what a finish! Three players tied with nett 75s.

Davie Kenny was the medal winner with 97-22-75, on a countback from Steve Wilkins 94-19-75 and Pat Chisholm 86-11-75.

The club again welcomed some local golfers who are members of clubs that are in lockdown.

Several formats were offered for players last Wednesday.

Four ball best ball stableford winners were Elaine Scanlon and Steve with 35 points from Lorraine Robb - Darlene Baker 33 and Beryl Cole - Jenny Hartley 29.

Dean Jones took out the 18-hole stableford with 36 points from a handicap of 4, from John Freestone 27 and Liz Manktelow 26. Nine holes --- Ryan Davies 18.

Lancefield golf There were plenty of good scores in the men's stableford event at Lancefield on Saturday. If you didn't score 40 points you missed out on a prize.

Recent in-form players were the grade winners.

A grade: Peter McGill 40 points, B grade: Barry Brennan 41, C grade: Mark Andrews 40. Stableford on Tuesday: Ed Godek 39, from Stewart Stevens and Peter McCill 35.

The ladies played 11 holes of Canadian foursomes on Wednesday.

Jenni Vennell - Robyn Stephens finished with a nett 29, three clear of Kaylene Cruise - Ros Jensen.

Trentham golf Trentham golfers played a par three event in ideal, sunny conditions on Saturday, with nett 50 (four under) the best in two grades.

Jim Snowden (10 handicap) won A grade with nett 50, Troy Donovan's nett 52 topped B grade, and Jim McCormack (24) had 50 in C grade. Ross Jackson, John Southwick, Simon Overden and Keith Webster all finished nett 51. In the women's par three stableford Di Lewis won A grade with 34 points, from Claire Perston 32.

Trish Mann's good recent form continued with 35 points in B grade, three clear of Rhonda Bradley.

The Wednesday women's comp. Is proving popular, with 27 hitting off last week.

U16s show plenty of fight

Kyneton District Soccer Club's U16Bs played Strathdale Glory in their round four game on Saturday, the first game of the season at their home ground Barkly Square.

Despite going down 4-2, Kyneton showed plenty of determination and fight throughout the game, leaving parents, supporters and the club enthusiastic about a positive season ahead.

Having had a tough start to the season with back-to-back losses, the team came back with a 12-0 win against Epsom the previous weekend and headed into Saturday's game high on confidence. They were the dominant team for the first 20 minutes, breaking down Strathdale with slick one-touch passing and movement and creating a handful of opportunities. The Glory roared back with chances of their own forcing a number of brilliant saves

by Kyneton goalkeeper James Penney but the pressure eventually told and they took a 3-0 lead into half-time.

After the break, Kyneton came out like a team with renewed focus and energy. Their preparation for the season, like all other teams, has been disrupted but they quickly fell into a rhythm and started playing some high-quality football, moving the ball swiftly down the flanks with wide midfielders Sam Gordon, Lewis CorryThomas and Harry Fox proving to be tough to handle for the opposition.

Kyneton District Soccer Club’s U16Bs played their first game of the season at home at Barkly Square on Saturday.

An unfortunate own goal took the score to 4-0 but the plucky Kyneton team didn't give up. Central midfielders Sam Tardif, Patrick Skipworth, Cai Rowland and Daniel Takos battled hard and created a number of chances until a scramble in the Glory goalmouth led to a well-taken chance by Kane Barron - a game highlight for the defender-cum-striker playing his first game at the pointy end of the attack.

Soon afterwards, Kyneton was awarded a free kick inches outside Strathdale's 18yard box. Harry Fox stepped

up and blasted a curling free kick into the bottom corner, his fourth goal of an already prolific season. Kyneton's golden boot leader Connor McKimm, with seven goals to his tally so far, didn't add to his collection but was dangerous throughout the match with some excellent movement and passing.

The central defensive pair of Sam Hanna, in his first season of football, and Noah Cooper both had excellent games and the other defenders Wills Lewis, Sam Tusa, Oscar Broadbent, Bailey Smallman and Henry Neylon all offered important contributions during

their time on the pitch.

Overall, it was a pleasing outing for the team and a little more progress on their already improved performances from the start of the season will make Kyneton a solid challenger for the remainder of the year.

Rangers hit the park The Macedon Rangers Soccer Club juniors hit the park on Sunday for their first-ever games and after many starts this year it was well worth the wait.

Hosted by Gisborne Soccer Club the boys had the opportunity to play two games and show the skills they have been working on during training.

Ranger girls (pictured) also had their jumper presentation and were tickled pink to be out on the pitch!

The Bridgestone Tyres Kyneton U14 Boys football season is well and truly underway, with the team playing round two of only eight home and away rounds for the year on the weekend.

The boys are now one win and one loss.

Having played a Reserves 1 opposition first up, they came away with the win. Round two saw them pushed up to play a Seniors side and they experienced a loss.

The remainder of the shortened season is going to prove an interesting one for the U14 boys. They've been asked to push themselves as individuals, in terms of their game-day fitness, skills and accountability.

They've also been asked to play a strong, team-focused brand of footy, looking to maximise each other's strengths and influence on the game. With far less time to develop these attributes than a usual season would allow, the boys are going to have to meet the challenge every single week.

Auskick kicks off On a foggy Sunday morning, Lancefield AusKick's 2020 season kicked off with nearly 60 youngsters participating.

Auskick coordinator Dave Condron was delighted with the attendance, with strict social distancing observed.

There were smiles and laughter all round, and the girls and boys (five to nine year olds) enjoyed themselves as did the helpers, with both ovals in Lancefield Park utilised.

The program will run for 10 weeks.

Footy Star Academy is here Bill West

The launch of the Clinton Young Footy Star Academy on Saturday morning represents a further boost for Australian Rules in Gisborne and the Macedon Ranges, and eventually Sunbury.

There were 158 young footballers taking part in the special free clinic held at Holy Cross Catholic Primary School at New Gisborne.

At a time when football and other sports in the district and beyond have been severely disrupted through the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Saturday's event launch was a beacon of hope, and provided some overdue enjoyment for the enthusiastic participants

and onlookers.

"It was pretty hectic, but it went really well," Clinton Young reflected afterwards.

Young, an elite AFL premiership player with 137 games behind him with Hawthorn and Collingwood, is well known in the area having spent three years playing with and coaching Gisborne, up until the end of 2019. He was appointed as midfield coach at Williamstown this year.

He grew up in Minyip, went to St Patrick's College in Ballarat, and was recruited by Hawthorn in the 2004 draft, becoming well known as a versatile player with a raking left-foot kick.

Young is a firm believer in the Footy Star Academy program, having spent

several years working as a skills coach and mentor with FSA headed by Brownlow Medallist Simon Black at Moorabbin.

The Footy Star Academy concept began about 20 years ago, and has since spread Australia-wide, branching into other sports apart from Australian Rules.

Young said he welcomed the opportunity to take up the FSA franchise opportunity in this part of Victoria.

"We are a passionate team dedicated to developing skills footy for the next generation of players," he said.

"It's an all-year-round opportunity for kids from the age of five up to 16 to develop their skills to be the best they can, while having fun with their friends."

Qualified coaches are readily avail-

able, with Gisborne's outstanding footballer-cricketer Pat McKenna already being involved.

Understandably, Young is the head coach of the new district FSA, and brings a wealth of sporting knowledge to the role. His wife Bec is helping out on the administration and promotional side, having worked with Essendon Football Club.

Holy Cross Primary School is to be used as a base for the programs.

On Saturday morning the young clinic participants were divided into three age groups, with a coach/instructor for every nine players.

Favorable weather conditions prevailed, and there were giveaways as well, including Sherrin football key rings.

Sponsors show support Despite these uncertain times - and no senior football season locally at all - Gisborne Football Netball Club sponsors have stuck by them.

In fact, the club is doing better sponsorship-wise than ever before with some major support from businesses.

"GFNC is extremely excited to announce its partnership with Titan Premix Concrete as a major sponsor," club sponsorship manager Tony Brancatisano said.

Titan has committed to three years with the club.

"This is an extremely significant deal because we only have six major sponsors including Titan Premix now," Tony said.

Tony approached Titan for sponsorship and he said they did not hesitate to get involved with the community.

Titan Premix Concrete is a local business that has

been working within the Macedon Ranges for more than 30 years.

Adam and Lucas Trovatello are running the business, the third generation in their family to do so.

Other new sponsors of the Gisborne club this season include New Image Plumbing, 1800 Hose Van, Johnson and Young Cranes, Elite Fitness Equipment, Sit or Stand, Telstra Store Gisborne, Macedon Ranges Solar Power and Safety Pad Solutions.

Tony said this really impressive, especially during COVID-19.

"GFNC appreciates their support despite the uncertainty when they signed on," Tony said.

He said that that five years ago GFNC had 40 sponsors and now there are 100 all up.

Final Ovation at last!

Bill West Perseverance by Kyneton-based trainer Charles Cassar was finally rewarded when Final Ovation broke through for her first win on July 18.

The five-year-old mare started at $12 and was having her 19th start when she lined up in the Swan Hill Kubota Maiden Plate over 1200m at Donald.

Coincidentally, Cassar's two runners at Donald -- Final Ovation and his 11-year-old Tax Evader - both drew barrier one.

Talented apprentice Laura Laffery rode a perfect race to bring Final Ovation with a well-timed run to win by a length, much to the delight of Cassar and a loyal group of owners.

After this first race it was a long wait until race nine, when Tax Evader, ridden by Jack Martin, carried top weight in the 1620m 0-58 event.

The veteran galloper, who won at Horsham six starts back, ran a brave race and finished a close third behind favourite South Bend.
