Kyneton violin maker Paul Davies has used salvaged wood from the Sydney Opera House to craft 50 sets of clapsticks for a gala concert at the iconic Australian landmark.

Commissioned to make the instruments by Indigenous composer and performer, William Barton, Davies created the clapsticks to be played by children at the Opera House last Thursday night.

Earth, for the Sydney Symphony Orchestra concert, which celebrated the completion of the concert hall's extensive two-year renovation.

"I've known Will for some time now and I've made a couple of violins for his partner, Veronique Serret, who was with the Australian Chamber Orchestra for many years," Davies explained.

"We caught up when he was in Melbourne a little while ago, and he asked me if I would do this, and I've got to admit I thought 'of course I'll do it but why aren't you asking an Indigenous person?'.

"But I knew enough about Will not to ask that question, he would have already worked that out, and I think it's about the inclusiveness that he really embraces."

As part of the renovation, timber that was originally in the Sydney Opera House was removed and collected.

The eucalypt wood was shipped to Davies to be planed and carved into clapsticks for the gala concert.

"We call them clapsticks, the Indigenous instrument, but the orchestral instrument is the clave," Davies said.

Romsey Coles is a step closer as the supermarket giant lodged an application with Macedon Ranges Shire Council this month.

The proposal includes a Coles supermarket, Liquorland, speciality retail (tenant unknown) and 195 onsite parking spaces at 51-53 Main Street.

“Subject to approvals, a new Coles supermarket at in Romsey would create hundreds of local retail and construction jobs," a Coles spokesperson told the Express.

"The proposed development would represent a multimillion-dollar investment in the region, offering residents more choice, great value and an enhanced shopping experience.”

At least two businesses relocated from the commercial precinct earlier this year

prompting widespread community speculation about plans for the site.

Last week works began to clear the site including demolition of an old house and trees.

MRSC director of planning and environment, Rebecca Stockfeld, said the proposal was now being assessed.

"At the moment, general works are being undertaken on the site which do not require a planning permit," Ms Stockfeld told the Express.

Ms Stockfeld said the site was not covered by a heritage overlay or any other heritage protection and a planning permit to demolish the house was not required.

Councillors will have the opportunity to call in the application once officers are in a position to make a recommendation.

Coliban Water has formally submitted an application to the Environment Protection Authority to amend its licence to operate the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant.

The amendment, now available for public feedback, seeks a reduction in the dilution ratio required for releases of excess wastewater from the plant to the Campaspe River.

The water authority was last year found guilty of making an illegal release of wastewater to the river in 2019, following on from multiple releases ooutside its licence over the past decade. It has since upgraded the plant as part of a 'Kyneton Solutions Project'.

Coliban Water's managing director, Damian Wells, said the upgrade meant the plant would no longer need to undertake blended water releases to the Campaspe River.

"The only water that will be released to the river, under normal operating conditions, will have been treated by the onsite biological nutrient removal process," Mr Wells said.

"The BNR process produces a high-quality treated water (tertiary treated) that is considered equivalent in quality to Class B recycled water, which can be put to a range of beneficial uses such as irrigation."

LANDOWNER CONCERN Campaspe River landowners remain concerned, however, that the river's health will continue to be compromised under the new licence.Huntly Barton said there was conflicting evidence between the consultancy firm and some of the data that Coliban Water had provided.

"We are forwarding questions to Coliban Water due to the gaping holes in their licence application to the EPA and we need answers well before the community consultation day on August 8," Mr Barton said.

"If they do not respond earlier, we will make all of our concerns accessible to the public.

"There's gaping holes in terms of phosphorus, dilution, the mixing zone and the means of measurement."

The licence amendment is now available for feedback until Friday August 19.

Construction has begun on a new fire station in Mount Macedon.

The new $3.1 million facility will be built on the same main road at 595 Mount Macedon Road – and will provide a modern facility for the local volunteers.

The new station will include three motor-room bays, a multipurpose room with kitchen, separate turn out facilities for men and women, accessible amenities, a brigade office, workshop and communications room. It will also have a training yard and on-site parking for volunteers.

The Mount Macedon Fire Brigade has 29 registered members and has served the community for about 60 years and responds to about 40 callouts a year.

The brigade also supports surrounding emergency services agencies for a range of incidents.

The new Mount Macedon Fire Station has been funded by the state government.

Lancefield and Romsey Neighbourhood Houses have launched community food share services.

Swap, share, take or donate Food share launches for Romsey, Lancefield

Community food share will offer residents more affordable food options following its launch in Lancefield and Romsey this month.

The food share is open to all community members and works on a ‘swap, share, take or donate basis’ with the adage ‘take what you need, give what you can’.

A range of fresh and non-perishable goods are available through a monthly credit points system, swapping for equal value of goods, volunteering time or by a suggested donation.

The food share aims to support not

just people in vulnerable situations but everyone – the initiative seeks to destigmatise views on accessing these types of services. The initiative has Foodbank membership.

"It offers everyone access to affordable groceries and allows those who are able to make a donation supporting the service for those who may be struggling," explained Vivien Philpotts, Lancefield Neighbourhood House.

The initiative is the latest extension of the joint Lancefield and Romsey Neighbourhood House efforts to cut down on food waste and create more affordable

food options.

It all began in 2019 with Feed it Forward – a generosity food movement – which has seen strong community uptake.

Now the movement includes monthly community lunches, meals cooked and delivered to vulnerable people and a community garden space in each town.

Open days Romsey Food Share is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10am to 2pm, at the kiosk in front of St Mary’s Church.

Lancefield's pantry is open Wednesdays and Fridays 10.30am to 2pm at the

Townhouse, 28 High Street.

People may also make appointments by phoning the Neighbourhood Houses.

Fresh produce has included mandarins, apples, bananas, carrots, potatoes, onions, mushrooms and pears as well as a wide range of non-perishable goods.

Leftover food will be used in the Neighbourhood House's monthly community lunches.

The Rex up for sale

Hepburn Shire Council will sell The Rex building in Daylesford despite strong opposing community feedback.

In November 2021, councillors decided not to proceed with the Hepburn Hub at The Rex project and voted to sell the building through a public process.

The Hepburn Hub at The Rex project was to include a library, auditorium, council staff accommodation and community spaces, including a co-working space.

It was made clear that the council would not consider a revival of the previous plans for the hub however a significant number of submissions to the process were focused on retaining The Rex for its original proposal, including the cinema (and/or performance space) and public toilets, which was outside the scope of the engagement.

Community consultation has revealed 66 per cent of respondents were against the sale, and just 30 per cent were in support. Four per cent were neutral or unsure.

Council received 369 individual survey responses and four group responses.

After investigating a range of alternative uses for the building, councillors determined the site could not be retained as a community asset.

Council officers will now implement a sale process for the building.

The council will also now review its land and building holdings and undertake a planning project that will review possible solutions of staffing accommodation and community facilities that were to be included in the Hepburn Hub. The purchase of The Rex building and other matters relating to the project remain under investigation by the Local Government Inspectorate.

National conference coming to Castlemaine

In recent years, main streets and town centres have faced many challenges to their survival.

First, shopping centres, then online, and finally, COVID. Now they’re faced with worker shortages and price increases.

However, in comparison to metro main streets, regional precincts have done it even tougher with a smaller population to call on for support and drops in tourism.

It is for this reason Mainstreet Australia is bringing its one-day conference, normally held in Melbourne, to regional Victoria.

With the support of Mount Alexander Shire Council and Business Mount Alexander, organisations, businesses and individuals committed to helping these precincts are invited to access invaluable education and connection on Thursday August 4 at the Phee Broadway Theatre in Castlemaine.

Mainstreet Australia executive officer Elizabeth Joldeski said it had been a challenging couple of years and with the latest wave of COVID and flu cases, the conference, and the issues it would tackle, could not be more timely.

MP slams bank closure

McEwen MP Rob Mitchell has slammed a decision by the Commonwealth Bank to close its branch in Woodend on September 2.

The local MP said the move was "yet another example of the big banks putting profits before people". "'Commonwealth Bank Australia recorded an $8.6 billion profit for 2021 with the 2022 financial year figure due to be announced on August 10, 2022," Mr Mitchell said.

“It does not only mean jobs lost in town with no surety of re-deployment, it also means further strain to the AusPost outlet and staff, which will now be the only place in Woodend for bill payments.

“Not everyone is able to use electronic banking and therefore rely on the services provided by a branch for their everyday needs, particularly the elderly."

Mr Mitchell said he would be calling on the Commonwealth Bank to pause the plan until it had appropriately consulted the community.

Salvage yard operator Karl Haass of Glenluce has been in the business of dismantling old houses for 40 years.

But Karl does not use a wrecking ball.

Instead he painstakingly dismantles yesteryear abodes and salvages the resulting beautiful, precious and often rare materials and fixtures, ensuring they do not go to waste but can instead go on to find new lives.

In dismantling a 1930s Lyttleton Street cottage in Castlemaine in recent days, to make way for a new build, Karl was amazed and delighted when he found a very early photo of a mystery lady in lace, long-lost behind a wall in the kitchen.

"In over 40 years of doing this sort of work, finding this photo was unusual," says Karl who has dismantled more than 4000 houses over the years, carefully salvaging their materials for reuse.

He believes the photo dates from the 1850s.

"It had been hidden for ages in that building and the lady in the photo looks to be dressed in expensive lace. She looks like she was someone of means," he says.

On the back of the old sepia photo is handwriting, some of which can be made out to include a reference to the date of January, 1850, along with two names including Charlotte James and James L...... (whose full surname is partly unclear).

"I often find things like coins and old bottles but to find this was incredible. I thought this is very special," Karl says.

Karl is one of very few people anywhere in Australia who dismantle and salvage old houses in the careful manner that he does, and suffice to say he recovered many valuable materials from the Lyttleton Street cottage.

Beautiful old western red cedar, baltic pine, Victorian ash and jaarah were among the timbers he salvaged, along with fixtures ranging from an attractive bay feature window to an early handmade

stained glass lamp cover and even a vintage battery pack that had been attached under the house to run a yesteryear Post Master General telephone landline.

All will now end up at Karl's fascinating salvage yard situated just out of Glenluce.

"I started restoring horse-drawn vehicles when I was 11 in the 1970s," the unique salvage yard operator says.

"The lady gave us this job (in Lyttleton Street) on the basis that I'm salvaging it.

"In Australia we're still throwing away far too much. You've got to be more in touch with the value of things.

"We're in a McDonald's age of building plastic-spastic."

Karl says he would love to see if anyone out there might be able to solve the mystery of the 1800s photographed lady's identity, and how her photo came to be hidden behind the mantlepiece of the Castlemaine cottage, which now no longer exists.

"Someone in Castlemaine would know about it," he says.

"As soon as I got the timber I knew each set had to be unique, and I had little time to make them, only a couple of days.

"Using the plane, we were able to create an elliptical shape, and with this shape you can get four different sounds depending on how you hit it.

"Will loved that."

Davies wanted to make sure the pairs of sticks, each cut from the same piece of wood, would stay together, so he was able to mark the sticks with a numbering system of lines and dots.

"I was able to number the 50 using lines and dots so you know that each one will always go with its partner," he said.

Davies established his workshop in Kyneton 12 months ago but has worked all over the world, including in London, New York, Shanghai and Mexico.

He spent 20 years in Castlemaine where he patented Spur violins – the first to be designed to be amplified.

"Spur violins were initially designed in Castlemaine many years ago, and they were designed as an instrument to have beautiful acoustic tone when they're amplified," he told the Express.

Davies restores antique instruments and makes one-off bespoke violins using hand tools and traditional methods. He is also developing new systems of making and restoring using advanced manufacturing techniques and equipment.

False alarm at Gisborne

Fifty people were evacuated from a medical centre in Brantome Street Gisborne last Thursday afternoon due to a strong smell of smoke.

Homelessness Week, which runs from August 1 to 7, aims to educate people on what homelessness looks like and how they can make a difference.

Sleeping rough accounts for only seven per cent of homelessness, with other forms including couch surfing, staying with friends and sleeping in cars or tents.

With the increase in interest rates, rental prices and the rising cost of utilities, fuel and groceries, housing insecurity is expected to increase.

Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health’s small team of housing workers provide support for people who are homeless or are at risk of homelessness.

This can include assisting with finding short-term emergency accommodation, as well as case management and advocacy to improve someone’s situation and find long-term housing, but options are increasingly limited.

ing properties across the whole of the Macedon Ranges,” says Kate Weston, who leads the housing team at Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health.

“These have long-term tenants in and only one or two become vacant each year.

“In the past 12 months we have assisted over 200 families and individuals, 28 of those have been young people under the age of 25. We have also responded to 48 emergency accommodation requests.”

The organisation sees housing affordability impacting all types of people, including older men and women who are finding themselves unable to afford the rising costs of housing after 50 years of living and working in the community.

It also affects young people, families, and women and children fleeing family violence.

“Often people have no option but to move out of the area in order to find affordable accommodation,” Ms Weston says. “But this is far from ideal and causes great anxiety as families are separated from the community they know and where their support network, schools and jobs are.”

The soup kitchen is on Tuesday August 2 from 12pm to 1pm at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute, 81 Mollison Street.

Ranges bid for Games

The Macedon Ranges could play a part in hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games and the shire council is encouraging residents to pitch ideas for the big event.

MRSC CEO Bernie O’Sullivan said it was a fantastic opportunity for the community to get involved in such a significant event and help showcase our region on an international level.

"We encourage our community to think of events or activities that could support the Commonwealth Games and associated celebrations, and that could be hosted right here in the Macedon Ranges," he said.

"Whether it be sporting, training or cultural events, or ideas that utilise our facilities and natural assets. This could really give an economic and tourism boost to the region, not only during the Games but for a long time to come.

“Our stunning natural scenery and vibrant villages make the Macedon Ranges an ideal location for supporting and augmenting the Commonwealth Games experience. We are really excited to see what we can contribute to this world-class event."

Local councils, peak bodies, Traditional Owner and Aboriginal organisations, businesses, creative and cultural organisations and individuals are all eligible to submit ideas.

Concepts must align with the vision of Victoria 2026: A world-class Commonwealth Games delivered in regional Victoria that leaves a valuable legacy for the state.

Ideas should fall into one of the following seven categories: cultural program, sporting program and training, education program, partnerships and collaboration, business innovation, live sites and local activations, and legacy.

Submissions need to highlight the regional community it will support, how the local community will benefit, and the legacy or long-term benefits it will provide.

The council will be making its own submission with ideas including hosting sporting and cultural events.

Harcourt flood study kicks off

The study will include modelling scenarios to identify areas that are at risk of flooding.

A project steering committee with local representatives will provide input and feedback to the North Central CMA during the development of the study.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of April, 2023.

It is jointly funded by the federal and state governments under the Risk and Resilience Grants Program.

The Harcourt community is being asked to do its bit to help protect the local area from future flooding.

The North Central Catchment Management Authority is supporting the Mount Alexander Shire Council development of a Flood Study for Harcourt and calling on residents to share their knowledge of past flood events to better inform how they manage and mitigate the impacts of flooding into the future.

North Central CMA project officer Nick Butler said Harcourt flooded in 2007, 2010, 2011 and 2016.

“From previous flood events we know there is little information available on record to create a full picture of what happens when Harcourt experiences a large-scale flood event,” he said.

“We have contracted Venant Solutions to help pull the study together, but locals know the area better than anyone. We’re wanting to hear from the community to tell us what happens on the ground when the area floods.

Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson is continuing her plastic-free July Challenge and last week visited the Malmsbury Market to take advantage of Sustainable Malmsbury's recycling initiative.

"Sustainable Malmsbury has a stall at the market where you can bring some of your everyday plastic products to be recycled. I took along old toothpaste tubes and a plastic razor, having now bought a metal one," she said.

Signs at the market encourage people to ask basic questions before they make purchases to help cut down on waste.

These include things like, "What is it made of?" and "Can it be fixed if it breaks?" and "Do I really need it?".

"The 'Before you buy, ask' motto is a great one," Cr Anderson said.

"If you can't avoid, reuse, repurpose or fix it, there are now plenty of places, with a bit of planning and thought, where you can place your items for recycling.

"Although my main challenge has been to reduce my single-use plastics it has been great to extend this to all single-use plastics when looking for solutions."

Cr Anderson said one of her key challenges this week was to ask people about their choices and encourage them to think of alternatives to single-use plastic.

"Everyone I spoke to was keen to work towards reducing plastics," she said.

"In a lot of cases they were using plastics because of COVID requirements but also because a bulk order was purchased some time ago and the products, rather than going to waste, were being used up until a more sustainable product could be purchased next time."

Cr Anderson also found this with her own monthly tally of single-use plastics.

At the end of last week, her total is now at 110 grams but her monthly goal of 200 grams is still in sight.

"It is important not to feel guilty but to be aware of the sources of plastic, particularly single use, in order to minimise purchase that involve it," she said.

What is council doing?

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has a Waste App and details on their website to assist people to know what products can go in which bin. The council now has the capacity to take single-use plastics at transfer stations for recycling.

The council also utilised the ‘Towards Zero Single Use Plastic’ fund to procure five internal recycling stations for community halls and TerraCycle drop-boxes.

This month MRSC has hosted plasticfree morning teas and meetings to encourage staff to refuse single-use plastics.

Many staff members have taken a pledge to refuse some of the plastic items including disposable coffee cups and plastic lunch packaging.

The beautiful friendship of Castlemaine youngsters, Jarrah Podesta and Mathilde Cross, has inspired a new children's book by award-winning author, Pip Harry.

Pip said the first spark for August & Jones came to her in 2019 after reading about 11-year-olds Mathilde and Jarrah in the Sydney Morning Herald ‘Two of Us’ column.

Jarrah had lost his sight to retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer, and Mathilde was his best friend and guide.

Braemar College's Benjamin Shaw has been named in the Premier's Top All-Round VCE High Achiever Awards for 2021.

He was one of 25 students to be listed, achieving a study scores of 46 or higher in at least five VCE studies.

Art lovers are about to have a unique chance to catch an afternoon floor talk with Malmsbury artist Gabrielle Martin, discussing her exhibition Through the Long Grass at Castlemaine Art Museum next Saturday.

The exhibition celebrates the landscape near Martin's home in the Goldfields town of Malmsbury.

The land was reshaped in the 19th Century by civic rail and water projects and grazing that serviced the goldmining industry.

In this month's artist talk, Martin will discuss the influences and ideas behind her work, and the role of memory, imagination and observation in her landscape paintings.

The local artist will also look at parallels between the landscape around Malmsbury and the orchards and paddocks on the outer fringes of Melbourne when she was growing up in the 1970s.

Wild fruit trees, weathered pines and dry fields of grass are common to both, as well as endemic gorse, blackberries and briar rose that resist the best efforts at control.

It is a compromised landscape, but one the artist feels deeply connected to.

She will also talk about the role of the figure in her recent work and how it has evolved from her portraits.

Minister for Energy Lily D’Ambrosio has announced a $205 million boost to the popular program, where every Victorian household can receive $250 to seek out a better energy deal on Victoria’s Energy Compare website.

All Victorian households are eligible for the $250 payment, including the nearly 400,000 concession card holders who previously claimed the payment under an earlier phase of the program.

The government is adding another $205 million to meet the popularity of the program, on top of the initial $250 million funding.

The $250 Power Saving Bonus is available until June 30, 2023, and there are no caps on the number of households that can receive the once-off payment.

User data shows that over the past 12 months, seven out of every 10 users saved an average of $330 by switching energy offers.

Households can claim the $250 payment by heading to the Victorian Energy Compare website and comparing energy offers to see if they can get a better deal, or by engaging with a participating community outreach partner. The Victorian Energy Compare website is the only free and independent online energy price comparison service available to Victorian energy consumers.

Other programs helping households and businesses to slash energy bills include Victorian Energy Upgrades, which provides up front incentives for low-cost-to-free energy efficient products, and Solar Victoria, which offers households and businesses discounted solar panels, batteries and efficient heating and cooling.

Mounting pressure on industry

construction insolvencies in 2022 must be put into perspective. While several highprofile builders have gone into liquidation this year, insolvencies are still relatively low compared to pre-COVID levels.

The building and construction industry recorded 541 insolvencies in 2019.

This dropped to its lowest point of 311 insolvencies at the end of 2020.

Unsubstantiated claims by some industry commentators that "up to 50 per cent of small builders could go to the wall in the next 12 months" do not appear to be based on hard evidence.

Master Builders Victoria has consistently advocated that the best way to protect consumers and help prevent further insolvencies is to protect builders.

Many builders in the residential sector have signed fixed-priced contracts.

Unlike other products like fuel and food, these unforeseen price increases cannot be passed on to consumers.

If builders cannot pass increases onto clients, there is a risk of insolvency, and clients may end up with half-finished homes. That's why MBV has continued to advocate to the Victorian Government to include rise and fall clauses in domestic building contracts.

In the meantime, we urge all clients to be kind and patient with builders – everyone is doing their best in exceptionally challenging circumstances.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Michael Johnston ('Violence is never the answer', Opinions, July 19) for his stout response to Ken Maas ('Dwarfing its predecessor', Opinions, June 14) when he appeared to justify the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. I too had a conversation with some friends recently who also appeared to be justifying this war. I was deeply shocked.

One of the friends, like me, professes to be a Christian.

My parents told me many stories of what it was like for them after Hitler's Nazis blitzed their way into Holland in May 1940 and set up the 'Thousand Year Reich'.

What happened was obscene and a war crime and it demonstrated the truth of the saying that; “War is never a tool of foreign policy. It is a failure of foreign policy.”

Time to celebrate our equine friends August 1 is the official birthday for all horses born in the Southern Hemisphere. In the Northen Hemisphere, it's January 1.

The date in each part of the world was first decided for thoroughbreds and linked to the breeding season of each area.

It's a set date so for events such as racing and now other competitions, horses can have a standard level of comparison for various reasons. It's also thought that it was introduced because of the historical lack of records of the animals' actual birthdays.

If a horse is born late July, chances are that it's birth won't be recorded but 'kept in the back paddock' until after August 1 because even though it might only be a few days old, come the first of August and that little foal could officially be considered one year old!

Anyway, come this Saturday and it's out with those carrot cakes because every neddy Australia wide will be having a birthday!

Applications are now open for Battle of the Bands, the annual competition showcasing talented local young musicians.

Battle of the Bands gives young musicians an opportunity to perform in a supportive and safe environment, while competing against peers for a first place prize.

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s FReeZA committee, Eight Metre Speaker, has opened the event up to all young musicians who reside in central Victoria, to compete for great prizes, with first place taking home $500 for new equipment, instruments or recording time.

“After two years off, we’re super excited to be hosting another Battle of the Bands in Castlemaine,” said Jodie Hearn, council's youth activities officer.

“The event provides a great platform for young musicians to connect with like-minded peers and get some experience performing live.

"It also gives young musicians the opportunity to play at the iconic Theatre Royal, which is always a highlight.”

To be eligible you must be aged 12 – 25 years, and live, work, study or play in central Victoria.

Workshops to support creative practice Castlemaine State Festival and Good Shed Arts have announced a new series of six two-day workshops providing essential inspiration, skills and support for artists of all descriptions who are forming or rethinking their professional practice.

The series of workshops begins on Thursday August 4 with a session dedicated to developing your values and vision to create a foundation for your practice.

Creative Visioning – knowing yourself, working with others and planning to sustain your practice will be facilitated by Lucy Mayes, an experienced leadership development and community engagement professional, a published author and sought-after presenter, and will also include a panel discussion on collaboration.

Further workshops in the program, spread over the remainder of 2022, will cover Creating Digital Content, Editing Principles and Techniques, Your Online Presence, Delivering Effective Workshops and Business and Administration Skills. When designing the course content, Kate Stones, Castlemaine State Festival's creative learning producer, focused on skills that practising artists would benefit from most.

“The Goods workshops are designed to provide artists with a toolbox of skills that they can use throughout their professional career,” Kate says.

"Each workshop is stand-alone, or you can commit to the whole program for a significant discount.

"We are also happy to offer a payment plan to artists wanting to attend."

Workshops are happening on Thursday and Fridays at Goods Shed Arts in the Castlemaine Goods Shed, from 10am-3pm with lunch provided.

A 'Sea of Hands' has been recreated at Romsey Primary School as part of the NAIDOC Week celebrations.

The display is an iconic symbol of reconciliation that was first presented in 1997 in front of Parliament House in Canberra.

Colours of the hands represent the colours of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples flags.

Tax time focus on rental property income each year, making it easier and faster for us to spot any rental income that you have charged your tenants, but haven’t declared,” Mr Loh said.

When preparing tax returns, make sure all rental income is included, such as from short-term rental arrangements, renting part of a home, and other rental-related income like insurance payouts and rental bond money retained.

“Income and deductions must be in line with a rental property owner’s ownership interest, which should generally mirror the legal documents,” Mr Loh said.

Get your expenses right Not all expenses are the same – some can be claimed straight away, such as rental management fees, council rates, repairs, interest on loans and insurance premiums.

Other expenses such as borrowing expenses and capital works need to be claimed over a number of years. Capital works can include replacing a roof, or a new kitchen renovation. Depreciating assets such as a new dishwasher or new oven costing over $300 are also claimed over their effective life.

“You can claim expenses for the property to the extent that they are incurred for the purpose of producing rental income, not where your family and friends stayed in the property for a mini getaway at mate’s rates, you use it yourself, say at Christmas, or you stopped renting the property out,” Mr Loh said.

“Other circumstances where deductions cannot be claimed include pretending that your property is available for rent when it really isn’t, for example you advertise significantly above a reasonable market rate compared to similar properties or you place unreasonable restrictions on potential tenants.

“Our 2022 Tax Time Toolkit for Investors also contains a number of fact sheets for landlords, including Top 10 tips to help landlords avoid common tax mistakes. These tips will help you avoid common mistakes and save you time and money.”

“It’s also important to note that when selling any property for more than $750,000, vendors / sellers must have a clearance certificate otherwise 12.5 per cent will be withheld,” Mr Loh said.

Keep good records to prove it all Records of rental income and expenses should be kept for five years from the date of tax return lodgments or five years after the disposal of an asset, whichever is longer.

“Get your books in order and start keeping records as soon as you make the decision to earn rental income. It makes tax time so much easier for you and your registered tax agent,” Mr Loh said.

Selling a rental property When selling a rental property, capital gains tax needs to be considered and any capital gains or capital losses need to be reported.

When calculating a capital gain or capital loss, it’s important to get the cost base calculation right. Cost base is usually the cost of the property when purchased and any costs associated with acquiring or selling it. These can be things like stamp duty, legal fees, valuations and real estate sales fees. Any capital works claimed as deductions may also need to be subtracted from the cost base.

“If you’ve sold a rental property that was once your home, you may be entitled to partially claim the main residence exemption. You will need to claim this exemption in your tax return when you lodge,” Mr Loh said.

Income and tax deductions from rental properties is one of the four key areas the Australian Taxation Office is focusing on this tax time.

It’s an area that’s easy to get wrong, and needs extra care when lodging.

The ATO Random Enquiry Program has found that nine out of 10 tax returns that reported rental income and deductions contain at least one error, even though most of those property owners were assisted by a registered tax agent.

The ATO is therefore urging rental property owners to ensure they carefully review their records before declaring income or claiming deductions this tax time, and for registered tax agents to ask a few extra questions of their clients.

Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh explained that registered tax agents could only work with the information they gathered from their clients.

"We know some clients won’t know everything they need to tell their agent," Mr Loh said.

"We don’t expect agents to be Sherlock Holmes, but we do expect them to ask the right questions to ensure their client’s return is right."

Mr Loh said that rental property owners were urged to ensure they knew what income they needed to declare and what could be claimed as a deduction.

“We are concerned about mistakes, and in particular, leaving out income or deliberate over-claiming of rental property deductions this year,” he said.

“Getting it right the first time, will ensure you receive the tax refund you are owed, and avoids us knocking on your front door down the track.”

Include all rental income The ATO receives rental income data from a range of sources including sharing economy platforms, rental bond authorities, property management software providers, and state and territory revenue and land title authorities.

Following on from Olivia Pinnock’s reselection to Melbourne Victory’s Pre-Academy, the Macedon Rangers Soccer Club is thrilled that Madi Migga, at the ripe old age of nine, was selected in the recent qualification rounds.

Her very excited coach Bodey Dittloff said Madi had had a fantastic start to the season with the U/9s and fully deserved the opportunity to try out with Melbourne Victory's Pre-Academy.

"Not only does she have confidence and ability with the ball at her feet, but she has a game sense well beyond her years and probably most pleasing, she actively tries to bring her teammates into the game," Dittloff said.

"Madi being accepted is a great achievement for her, for our team and for the club – I'm absolutely stoked for her and look

forward to continuing playing a small part in her development."

Olivia and Madi were very excited meeting Melbourne Victory Pre-Academy coach Bella for their first session together.

A trip to the beach Another road trip and another first-time goal scorer! With the sun shining it was the perfect day for a trip Williamstown and the girls came out to play and how proud were the parents, smiles wider than the pitch with Eva adding to her goal tally the team was buzzing.

With some great defending and goal keeping the competition was tight and then Polly broke through with her inaugural goal and didn’t the girls celebrate! It was a game that all the team were involved in and seeing the girls having so much fun was fantastic.

Training back for AFL Masters

July has marked the Victorian Country AFL Masters squads first training session in Woodend since September 2019.

Around 40 players and support staff braved harsh winter conditions in preparation for the 2022 AFL Masters National Carnival.

Held each September-October, this year’s event will be held in Adelaide following two years in hiatus due to the pandemic.

Despite players and coaches from Kerang and Ballarat being unavailable due to a fixture change, the session was well attended, and everyone got the chance to get a good number of miles.

Around 120 players, men and women aged between 35-75, along with their partners, families and support staff will travel to West Beach Adelaide, in the battle for national honours.

Having won 21 National Championships across various age groups since the first carnival in 1983, there is a lot of pride pulling on the white Victorian Country jumper.

The Game of AFL Masters Australian Football provides the opportunity for male and female players 35 years and over to enjoy the game of Aussie Rules Football in a safe, supportive, family orientated and fun environment.

The Masters style of AFL football originated in Country Victo-

ria in 1980 and is now played by more than 260 teams throughout Australia.

AFL Masters has a national standardised set of modified rules designed to reduce the risks of injury and has the benefit of being acknowledged and supported by the AFL and Sport Australia.

The sport is governed by the AFL Masters National Board and its’ nine-member state and territory associations.

Players find a welcoming atmosphere at AFL Masters clubs with an emphasis on family involvement and fun social interaction.

While a good level of fitness is required to enjoy the game fully, training runs once or twice a week without huge time commitments which means it’s flexible around family and work commitments.

The next Vic Country training sessions will be held on the following dates: Ballarat August 14 at 11am, Sunbury August 28 at 11am, Gisborne September 11 at 11am at Gardiner Reserve, and Melton September 18 at 11am at Melton Recreation Reserve.

Castlemaine Geoff Deppeler (15) was the overall and A-grade winner in Castlemaine’s stableford on Saturday.

He returned 38 points, scoring 19 on each nine when only the brave emerged from under the doona to deal with the drizzle.

James O’Brien (+1) had 37 in the top grade, with Ross Stevens (16) taking out B-grade with 38, four clear of Billy Burgess (16).

Kyneton There were a variety of events at Kyneton over the past week, despite some unenticing weather at times.

The ladies played the new orange course for the first time on Tuesday.

Denise Murphy (10) was the winner with 34 points, from Marg Scoble (16) with 31. Nine holes – Liz Turang (35) with 17 points.

Deb Kohlman, Joan Gibbs and Valma Smoors were NTPs. Wednesday stableford: Noel Alldis (18) 36 points, from Peter Walsh (15) on 35. Ladies – Marg Scoble (23) with 34.

The new ladies/members brigade (affectionately referred to as TeeBirdies) played nine holes on Friday, with honours going to Annie Harmer with the least number of putts.

Saturday saw two divisions of nine-hole stableford competition.

The front nine winner was Barry Murphy (15) with 22 points, from David Austin (25) with 20.

Lancefield A fun day for a mixed field of men, women and visitors with the different tees used on every hole, and odds and evens added to the Ambrose format at Lancefield on Saturday.

Sunshine was welcomed over the last nine holes, and the day’s winning team of Sandra Stephens, Trevor Lambert and Denis Davenport carded a remarkable 59.75, with Ed Godek and Graham Mau runners-up on 65.5.

The 16th ‘money hole’ was won by Lambert, and Dale Schmitt was just two centimetres from a hole in one on the fifth.

Some good scores in the St Andrews foursomes on Wednesday, with Di Brennan and Ros Jensen the winners with 74.

Legends stableford: Mal Ive (25) with 36 points, from Peter McGill (9) on 31.

Romsey Once again challenging conditions for Romsey golfers on Saturday. With the strong northeasterly making it tough to post a good score.

Many inconsistent first nine holes, then some improvement.

Andrew Clement was the day’s winner with 81-8-73, from Mick Squire 81-5-76 and Davey Kenney 88-12-76., with Clement, Steve Wilkins and Mitch Atlas the NTP winners.

After a frosty start to the foursomes on Wednesday, players again battled for consistency.

The winners were Wendy Gosen – Rob Slade 101-22-79.

Trentham The best score of the day in Trentham’s stableford on Saturday came from C-grade winner Adrian Sisk (24) with 40 points.

Nathanial Slater (12) took out A-grade with 39, and Anthony Flores (20) topped B-grade with 38.

With 15 players selected in the Dalhousie country teams’ lineup, Trentham has five participants – a wonderful achievement.

Congratulations to Linda Marchesi, Sue Byrne, Terri O’Callaghan, Mandy Bestwick and Claire Perston.

Woodend Woodend golfers turned out for a four-ball best-ball par event on Saturday.

The winners with a tally of +8 were Murray Fraser and Tony Gepp with +8.

They finished two shots clear of Gary Richardson – Bruce Kent, who had +6, along with thirdplaced Brian Paton – David Woodman.

Barney Hearnden and Mike Fitzpatrick were NTPs. In the Tuesday stableford, Andrew Davies (handicap 2) was in superb form with a sub-par round earning 39 points. Next best was Brian Paton (21) with 36.

18s jubilant

The Castlemaine Magpie sides played host to South Bendigo at the Camp Reserve last Saturday in round 14 of the Bendigo Football Netball League.

While Castlemaine's firsts and seconds found the going tough against rampaging Bloods outfits the Magpie Under 18s were jubilant after recording their fourth win for the 2022 season.

The Bloods made a strong start in the Seniors contest jumping out to a six goal lead at the first change.

Castlemaine lifted their work rate in the second quarter and but the Bloods made the most of every opportunity and added another four goals to the Magpies one to blow the margin out to 56 points at halftime.

South continued to dominate in the second half to win the match by 97 points.

Final scores were Castlemaine 1.1, 2.4, 3.6, 5.9 (39) to South Bendigo 7.3, 11.6, 16.12, 20.16 (136).

Goal kickers for Castlemaine were Brodie Byrne 2, Zac Denahy, Bradley Keogh and Brendan Josey.

Best for Castlemaine were Brodie Browne-Kerr, Brendan Josey, Tom Cain, Liam Wilkinson, Riley Pedretti and Tommy Horne.

In the Reserves it was much the same story with the Bloods taking charge early and never headed going on to win by 185 points despite the valiant efforts of the Magpie defence.

Best were James Collie, Austin Peace, Connor Lyon, Luke Pritchard, Oliver Daldy and Ben Moran.

The Under 18s opened their account with a four goal opening term, while keeping the Bloods to just one straight kick and led by 17 points at the first break.

The second quarter was more closely fought but the Magpies held a four goal lead at halftime.

Castlemaine lifted their intensity in the third quarter kicking four goals to one to blow the lead out to 42 points at the final change.

It was all one-way traffic in the last term as the Magpies, sensing the win, slammed on another five goals while keeping South to a solitary point to run out winners by a convincing 74 points.

Final scores were Castlemaine 4.2, 6.5, 10.6, 15.9 (99) to South Bendigo 1.3, 2.5, 3.6, 3.7 (25).

Goal kickers for Castlemaine were Chaz Holman 4, Ben McConachy, Kyan Martin, Dallas Keogh-Frankling 2, Mitchell McKnight, Aidan Goddard, Callam De Bono, Ben Moran and Oliver Daldy.

Castlemaine's Central Vic AFL Women's side enjoyed a week's rest after North Bendigo forfeited and have the bye this weekend before they take on second placed Golden Square at the Camp Reserve on August 7.

Netball On the netball court the Magpies netted some terrific results in a great all round effort. A Grade side posted a well deserved win 45-27, A Reserve had a narrow loss 29-35, B Grade won 48-19 in a dominant display, B Reserve were unlucky to go down 38-48 in a top effort, and the Castlemaine 17 and Under won 44-23.

This Saturday July 30 the Magpie sides make the trek to Dower Park to take on Kangaroo Flat.

The round 12 top-of-the-table clash was much sterner than most of the contests the Saints have faced this season, and they remain on top of the MCFNL ladder.

Conditions became wetter and muddier as the match progressed, and in the end it was a convincing win.

NETBALL Netball was played in wet conditions, and all players should be congratulated on their exemplary conduct on the court and around the club as well.

Illness made it difficult to fill junior teams, and the Saints’ family hope all players and families are feeling better soon. It wasn’t the Saint’s week this week with all teams coming second best.

The visitors won all matches despite courageous efforts by many of the young Saints.

130 YEARS TO CELEBRATE There’s a few key events ahead: The Annual Club Ball is on August 6, and on August 20 (final round) there’s premiership sides’ reunions and the 130 years celebrations for the club.

All past players and members are invited to come and enjoy the final game of the season.

Campbells Creek secures first win

Campbells Creek is celebrating after securing their first win of the year over Maryborough Rovers in a one point thriller before their home crowd last Saturday in round 12 of the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football League.

Maryborough determined to get their first win of the year got the jump on Creek in the first quarter kicking three goals to one and led by 14 points at quarter time.

To their credit the Creek Magpies lifted in the second term and slammed through another five goals to the Borough's 3 to trail by just two points at half time.

The battle royale continued in the third term as both sides desperately tried to secure the goals needed to secure that first elusive victory.

Maryborough came out on top kicking four goals to three to hold a 10 point margin at the final change.

Determined not to let the opportunity slip by Creek continued to give their all peppering the goals and kicking 3.5 to the Rovers' 2 for the term to get over the line by the narrowest margin of one point.

Final scores were Campbells Creek 1.2, 6.3, 9.4, 12.9 (81) defeated Maryborough Rovers 3.4, 6.5, 10.8, 12.8 (80).

Harcourt had a strong win over Royal Park to the tune of 121 points to reclaim fourth spot on the MCDFNL ladder.

The Lions led from the front with a seven goal first quarter effort with the Tigers only managing a goal.

The second term was a more even affair with Park holding their own and kicking one goal to the Lions 2.

However, Harcourt put the foot down in the third stanza piling on another six goals and while holding Park scoreless to grab a 91 point advantage at the final change.

Harcourt continued on with the job in the last quarter adding another five goals to one point to regain their place in the four.

Final scores were Harcourt 7.2, 9.6, 15.13, 20.14 (134) to Royal Park 1.0, 2.0, 2.0, 2.1 (13).

Maldon found the going tough against an in-form Carisbrook outfit eventually go-

ing down by 101 points.

The Dons made a promising start with the sides kicking four goals apiece in the opening term and Maldon only trailing by two points at quarter time.

But the Redbacks dominated the second term kicking five goals to one to lead by 32 points at halftime.

Brook smashed through another 13 goals in the second half to post a convincing win and shore up second spot on the table.

Final scores Carisbrook 4.4, 10.7, 17.10, 23.12 (150) to Maldon 4.2, 5.5, 7.6, 7.7 (49).

Newstead also had a challenging day on the park going down to Dunolly in a low scoring affair.

The first term was a real arm wrestle with both sides only managing a goal each.

Dunolly showed improvement in the second term making the most of their scoring opportunities to kick three goals to the Steaders one and lead by 11 points at halftime.

The third quarter was a more even affair with both sides finding the goals and

adding to their tallies, but the Eagles still held the ascendency as they moved into the last quarter with 21 points separating the sides.

Both sides kicked two goals apiece in the final term but the damage was done and the Eagles claimed the four points.

Final scores were Newstead 1.2, 2.7, 4.8, 6.8 (44) to Dunolly 1.4, 4.6, 7.11, 9.14 (68).

Goal kickers for Newstead were Dillion Hinge, Tyler James 2, Oscar Lynzaat and Cordie McKendry.

Magin kicks 9 – Tigers in hunt Netball clean sweeps

Kyneton senior footballers stayed in contention for a finals berth by defeating Kangaroo Flat by 63 points at the Showgrounds on Saturday.

Rhys Magin, one of the club’s legendary players, kicked nine goals in a brilliant display and sits second on the league’s goalkicking list behind Golden Square’s Joel Brett with 59 for the season.

Magin also coaches the Tigers’ Under 18s and he applauded the young side’s great team effort, one of their best for the season to go down by seven points minus several players absent through injury and call-ups.

Now the real test lies ahead for the senior side, in sixth place on the ladder behind Eaglehawk on percentage.

The Tigers go to Golden Square on Saturday, then play Eaglehawk, Sandhurst and Maryborough to round off the home and away season.

The Tigers beat third-placed Golden Square by seven points with a great finishing effort on May 14, and will be looking for a repeat performance.

In windy conditions, Kyneton found Kangaroo Flat a persistent opponent in the early stages, before the Tigers went to the long break with a 36-point lead.

The very accurate Flat outscored the wayward Tigers in the third term, but the home side rocketed home with a seven goals to two final quarter effort to lift percentage.

Tigers’ coach Jesse Grae was elated with his side’s persistence, which produced a 6.7 (43) to 5.5 (35) victory.

Nicholas Tunzi, Jack Haslett, Thomas Boyer, Lachlan Read, Jacob Plowman and Jack Pilbeam were the Tigers’ best.

In the Under 18s, Kangaroo Flat won 9.4 (58) to 7.9 (51), with the Tigers’ best being Mitchell Wearne, Lachlan Thompson, Brady Muir, Hunter Buchanan, Charlie May and Cormac Sutton.

Gisborne rampant against Strath A methodical Gisborne combination ran right away in the last quarter against secondplaced Strathfieldsaye on Saturday to win by 58 points at Gardiner Reserve.

Firmly entrenched as 2022 Bendigo League football flag favourites, the Bulldogs had dynamic forward Pat McKenna in peak form with eight goals.

With four home and away rounds remaining, Gisborne has the minor premiership in its grasp with high hopes of being in peak form come finals time.

Senior coach Rob Waters will be keen to ensure the lid it kept on any premature premiership aspirations.

Gisborne has a strong list of versatile and talented players, and speed and teamwork

were certainly apparent on Saturday.

Strathfieldsaye cannot be dismissed as a contender, as the Storm was hit hard by COVID during the week, being forced to forfeit the Reserves match through lack of available players.

In round five on May 7, Gisborne won by six points against the Storm, but it was a different scenario on Saturday.

The Bulldogs, with big ruckman Braidon Blake continuing his recent good form, always appeared to be in control.

Leading by four goals going into the last term, the Bulldogs rammed home seven goals to the opposition’s two, much to the delight of their strong contingent of supporters.

This Saturday, Gisborne makes the trip to

play South Bendigo at the Queen Elizabeth Oval, and this is where the grand final will be played.

Gisborne’s five netball teams had runaway wins against Strathfieldsaye at Gardiner Reserve on Saturday, and Kangaroo Flat also won all its matches at Kyneton.

The Kyneton B-grade side was pleased to be very competitive, trailing by just two goals at halftime.

Intensity lifted in the third term due to some fine intercepts by Miriam McIntyre, but the Flat finished well to prevail 46-35.

This Tigers’ side proved it can match it with top sides in this grade.

New life members

Life memberships have to be earned, and on Saturday the Riddell Football Netball Club inducted three individuals who have made tremendous contributions in long-term time and effort.

A large attendance of supporters and past players, as well as family members, were present to recognise and applaud the marvellous contributions of Trish Allen, Nic Hagan and Rod Kinter.

Over 30 years of combined service in various committee positions was expanded on during formalities, with ‘life’ medallions presented

by David Hutchens to Trish and Nic, and Rod will receive his at a later date.

A fine time was had by all in attendance, enhanced by numerous stories by some of the ‘old timers’.

Trish Allen became involved with the Bombers as a very young girl, and has inspired many; Nick Hagan came to the club in the late 1990s and played for eight seasons, later being treasurer for 11 years and secretary for one. One son plays for the Bombers, another may join him in the near future. Rod Kinther has kept the administration ticking over for years.

Before a good-sized crowd, Riddell took on Macedon with mixed results.

The Bombers were successful in the three football games, and Macedon won all four netball matches – two in extremely tight finishes.

With three rounds before the finals, Riddell supporters anticipate six of their seven sides will be represented; the senior football side is likely to finish second on the ladder.

Searching across Tigers’ 150 years Bill West

Lancefield Football Netball Club will celebrate its 150th anniversary next year, and the hunt is on to collect a wealth of information and photographs adding to the Tigers’ illustrious history.

The intent is to put together a comprehensive pictorial history to mark the milestone, and a call has gone to anyone who can help in any way.

Already there has been heaps of relevant material “dug up” from various sources, and the search is stepping up now to ensure the outcome is something which will make the club, and town, proud of past achievements.

Initially it was thought the Tigerland celebrations were due this year, but research through newspapers proved the big 150th occasion will be spread across much of 2023.

Denis Graham, a member of one of the pioneering families, has the role as the main compiler of relevant information.

“We’ve already found much material the current generation was completely unaware of, and the Romsey-Lancefield Historical Society is playing its part," he said.

Lancefield Football Club was formed in 1872, and its first premiership (as far as can be ascertained) came in 1888 with a 4.14 to 3.5 grand final victory against Rose of Kilmore. Many more have followed with Romsey often one of the club’s arch rivals.

In the early years Lancefield played against some sides which have long disappeared, and are almost a part of folklore.

Old photographs that can be copied and returned to their owners are being sought; relevant names are a huge asset.

In particular, photos are being sought from the 1970s and 1980s for both football and netball teams, hopefully labelled.

Mighty Tigers – A century ago this Lancefield team won a premiership in 1923, and the club followed up in 1924 by beating Macedon in the grand final.

The Tigers’ team included two members of the inter-generational premiership families – The Shannon’s (Dave and Bill).

Kyneton women draw

Kyneton District Soccer Club's Women's team played up in Tatura on Sunday. In the first half, Kyneton dominated with a goal from Sian Hooppell, which was assisted by Bronte Randall in her debut game for the Women's side.

The team was in high spirits at the half-time break, leading 1-0.

In the second half, Tatura was given a penalty kick and secured a goal. Unfortunately Kyneton was unable to come back and finished with a 1-1 draw.

The four senior football matches in the Riddell League were all won by substantial margins on Saturday.

Second-placed Riddell demolished fifthplaced Macedon by 57 points, and top-ofthe-ladder Diggers Rest kept fourth-placed Romsey to a miserable 1.4 in the first half on the way to a 55-point victory.

Second-placed Wallan had the day’s biggest margin, toppling Lancefield by 144 points at Greenhill Reserve, and Melton Centrals had 59 points to spare against wooden-spooner Western Rams.

Woodend-Hesket had the bye and can keep finals hopes alive if they conjure a way of winning their final three matches, beginning with Centrals this weekend.

then finish with the bye and a last-round encounter with the winless Rams; Romsey visits Lancefield where the Tigers would be keen to cause a major upset.

BOMBERS TOO QUICK Despite the absence of injured topliners in Dylan Tarczon and Tim Walsh, Riddell always held sway against Macedon, with Tommy Alkemade taking a strong mark in the goal square to goal with less than two minutes on the clock.

The Bombers were too quick and took advantage of a strong wind down the ground to ram on five unanswered goals, then astutely defended and played 'keepings off' for much of the second term.

A 50-metre penalty gave Jason Cooke the Cats lone first-half goal.

Riddell has plenty of depth and coach Justin Belleville also has a variety of options as far as scoring goals is concerned.

The Bombers led by seven goals at the last change, and with the wind abating, added another four for good measure.

Romsey finally welcomed back topliner Jack Jedwab from injury, but found the visiting Diggers Rest brigade in formidable form.

The visitors have strengths on every line, and will go into the finals on top of the ladder.

Once again Corey Pretzel and skipper Nathan Blair played well for the Redbacks.

The first-ever female football match to be held under lights at Lancefield takes place this Friday night (July 29).

Lancefield Under 15s are playing Melton South, with the Riddell League accommodating the match switch to Tigerland at night.

“It should be a great night,” Lancefield junior female football coordinator Jacqui Green said.

The match, starting at 7pm, is possible due to the long awaited new lighting system at the ground being officially switched on earlier this month.

Lancefield girls are in fourth position on the ladder and anticipate playing finals.

There is a strong chance Lancefield will host a female football finals match this season.

“We hope to field two girls’ teams next season,” Lancefield U15 girls are in fourth position on the ladder and anticipate playing finals.

Finals venues

Romsey Park will be the venue for three of the six Riddell League netball and football finals.

Finals dates and venues are: Week 1: Qualifying Final at Romsey on Saturday, August 20; Elimination Final on Sunday, August 21, at Wallan.

Week 2: Second Semi-final on Saturday, August 27, at Romsey; First Semi-final on Sunday, August 28, at Gilbert Gordon Oval, Woodend.

Week 3: Preliminary Final on Saturday, September 3, at Tony Clarke Oval, Macedon.

Week 4: Grand Final on Sunday, September 11, at Romsey.

Riddell demolished Macedon on Saturday

Beaten just once this season, Macedon A-grade netballers proved too strong for Riddell on Saturday and have the all-important top spot wrapped up.

The Cats play secondplaced Wallan this weekend, then have a bye, and a final home and away round match against fifth-placed Western Rams.

Sixth-placed Riddell play the Rams on August 6 and a win should put the Bombers into the finals.

An improving Lancefield pressed Wallan all the way and went down by the narrowest of margins.
