MPs back in Labor victory Lisa Chesters and her supporters celebrate victory in Bendigo.

Angela Crawford Local Labor MPs for Bendigo and McEwen have been returned in Labor's decisive victory at Saturday's federal election, after nine years in opposition.

Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters and her McEwen counterpart, Rob Mitchell, were returned for their fourth and fifth terms respectively in an election they say was won on issues of integrity, climate action and cost of living concerns.

It was also a strong win for women with several Liberal-held seats being

claimed by female teal independent and Labor candidates and polling interpreted as showing the 'Morrison Factor' being part of the Liberals' demise.

Ms Chesters enjoyed a swing in her favour of more than three per cent to defeat the Liberals' Darin Schade convincingly.

With 76 per cent of votes counted yesterday, she had 51,740 votes to Schade's 31,649, before preference distribution.

She told the Express that what she'd heard in her local listening posts was that people wanted change.

the government was going in and there was a real sense of 'we have to have a change of government'," she said.

Ms Chesters said Labor women had done well in this election, with regional women increasing their margins and others winning new seats.

"It was an election where people got behind Labor's agenda, practical action on climate change, making sure that we're strengthening Medicare and rebuilding health services," she said.

"Our commitment around rewiring the grid to allow more renewable energy into

the system, which will mean cheaper power bills and also help us tackle climate change."

Ms Chesters said integrity was a big issue, and ensuring the parliament had an independent anti-corruption commission.

"The fair treatment of women too," she said.

"On women, it's action speaks louder than words. More than 50 per cent of the Labor caucus is women and we'll be a better government for it."

MPs back in Labor victory From page 1.

MCEWEN HELD McEwen MP Rob Mitchell held onto his seat after defeating the Liberal Party's Richard Welch with only a small swing away from Labor in the electorate of less than two per cent.

With 67 per cent of votes counted yesterday, Mr Mitchell had 37,633 votes to Welch's 32,556, before preference distribution.

Despite the Liberals throwing millions of dollars at projects in the electorate in a bid to steal the seat from Labor, Mr Mitchell said people wanted a local who was there for the community.

"Every promise we have made, we have delivered on, and they saw through the hollow promises from (The Liberals)," he told the Express.

"They put trust in the record I have for standing up for the community and getting things done."

Mr Mitchell said he too had been given a clear message that people wanted change, and progressive change.

"They were annoyed with the falsehoods, the untruths and the attacks and were more concerned about how we could facilitate change," he said.

"People were keen to see change and you could see it in the relief that was shown on Sunday.

Inquiry examines impact of incarceration Lisa Dennis

Friends of Castlemaine Library’s Denise Jepson addressed the inquiry on its Read-Along Dads/Mums program.

FOCAL estimates that over the past decade about 140 prisoners a year have taken part with more than 350 books a year produced for children to enjoy at home.

The initiative also provided vital connections during the COVID lockdowns when prisons were closed to visitors, with the audio books created via Zoom.

"Parents are the main participants in the program but it is also offered to brothers, grandparents, uncles and aunts who want to maintain connections with children in their lives," Ms Jepson said.

The far-reaching benefits of a program providing vital connection between incarcerated parents and their children has been highlighted in a submission to a Legislative Council inquiry.

Friends of Castlemaine Library representatives made the submission to the inquiry examining the impact of parental incarceration on children.

FOCAL's submission addressed the positive impacts of its Read-Along Dads/ Mums program, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2022.

FOCAL representative Denise Jepson attended the Melbourne hearing to speak to the submission.

One of the program's facilitators, Lisa D'Onofrio, who works one-on-one with men and women in the Loddon, Middleton and Tarrengower Prisons, also participated in the hearing via Zoom.

Ms Jepson said Read-Along Dads/Mums began as a six-month program at Castlemaine's Loddon Prison to enable prisoners to record an audio book for their child. The CD (or USB) was then forwarded on to the child together with the book.

The program was so well received that FOCAL continued the initiative through various small grants and then eventually secured funding through Corrections Victoria and the Legal Services Board.

This funding has been renewed for the past six years and the initiative was subsequently expanded to Middleton (a large new annexe of Loddon) and the Tarrengower Women's Prison at Maldon.

"We have had much feedback from prisoners saying they and their families received many benefits from the program," Ms Jepson said.

"My favourite was 'Thanks miss, they all cried when they got the CD. My missus cried, my mum cried, and my daughter loved it. I told them I'm only in prison, I'm not dead'."

"At the hearing, Fiona Patten MP said the prisoner's comment that really struck her was 'He said he liked hearing me laugh on the CD. He didn't want me to be sad all the time when I was in here'."

FOCAL's program only costs approximately $37,000 per annum to run across the three local prisons and they would love to see it expanded across the whole state and beyond.

"We have received enquiries from around Australia for information and advice on how to set up a similar program and have directly assisted three prisons in setting up and running a similar program, two in Victoria and one in Western Australia," Ms Jepson said.

The Legal and Social Issues Committee will take on board all submissions and examine existing policies and services available for children affected by parental incarceration. It will consider available models in Victoria and other jurisdictions and examine their effectiveness. The committee is scheduled to report back to parliament by July 1, 2022.

A new art exhibition that's just gone up at Castlemaine's Taproom is raising funds to help people impacted by the war in Ukraine.

Simply titled 71, this bold, bright showing features large-scale architectural deconstructivist works by well-established Castlemaine artist Phillip Head.

"They're all a play on deconstructing architecture of the same Bendigo building – No 71," he says of the works rendered in acrylics and collage.

Particularly known for his portraiture, Head said he was inspired to donate 100 per cent of sales from 71 while working on the pieces and seeing news reports on the Ukrainian destruction.

That process got him thinking about the brutal 'deconstruction' of architecture affected by the violence of war – and the decision to donate that followed this musing was a "no-brainer" he said.

It's a cause close to the heart of Castlemaine's Callum Stanley, who by coincidence runs the Print Together printing business at The Mill complex – just a few doors distant from The Taproom.

For the past decade or so Stanley has employed Serj Korchma, a Ukrainianbased web developer who, together with his wife and baby child, has now been forced to flee his home town of Kharkiv near the Russian border.

Moved by the plight of his long-time employee and receiving regular personal updates on the horrific impacts of the violence, Stanley has, for many weeks now, been donating five per cent of all Print Together's earnings to help impacted Ukrainians.

Bid to build in farm zone

Shed grants

Applications are now open for state government funding to establish, expand or improve men’s sheds.

Men's sheds provide a place for people to get together, work on common projects and contribute to their community.

In the 2022-23 grant round, men’s shed groups can again apply for a grant of up to $80,000 for the construction of a new shed or the extension or refurbishment of an existing shed.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is expected to make a decision on the matter at its June Planning Delegated Committee Meeting.

New Kyneton farmers aiming to be among Australia's largest Shropshire sheep breeders are fighting to build in the Farm Zone to realise their dreams.

The Pinto family seeks to build shedding, water tank and a family home but their property falls under the 40ha build requirement for the zone.

Farm plans present a vision for a biodynamic, regenerative and sustainable Shropshire sheep stud with a commitment to promote and conserve a heritage breed.

eSafety webinars

New technology to improve electricity reliability in high fire-risk areas is being rolled out in Blackwood. Electricity distributor Powercor has installed new-generation automatic circuit reclosers, on powerlines protected by bushfire safety devices known as rapid earth fault current limiters.

The first of these advanced ACRs has been installed at Blackwood, a community supplied by a powerline that experienced a series of outages in March.

The eSafety Commissioner is running free webinars for parent and carers throughout the year, with a different focus area each month.

The focus for May is parental controls, where you can find out how to set up devices and apps to help keep children and young people safe online.

This webinar will include practical tips, demonstrations and advice for parents and carers of kids aged four to 13 years old.

Truffle farm build rejected

Building on a small Farm Zone property has been rejected to support what Macedon Ranges Shire Council has described as "de facto hobby farming".

Plans were to build a home in support of a two-acre truffle orchard and seasonal grazing on 17 acres in Lauriston.

While no permit was required for the farming activities, building a home there would contravene the Farm Zone’s minimum 40ha build requirement.

State-wide Farm Zone build rules intend to limit fragmentation and loss of farmland to development.

The plan did not gain the council approval it needed to proceed and was rejected again at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal this month.

Council said the proposed agricultural use was not sufficient to justify a permanent house on the site.

The council believed the home was the primary intended use and expressed concern it was in danger of proceeding without the agricultural component if it was approved.

They also said it was "too large" and planned for an area where it was discouraged.

The applicant challenged all of the council's grounds for refusal. They said the building was necessary to assist with establishment, maintenance, security and harvesting.

They were unwilling to begin the truffiere without a home on site.

Farm plans outlined a vision for "an intensely managed and highly profitable small farm" for production of European black truffles.

"The land is of a low-to-average agricultural quality ranking and has somewhat limited capacity for farm production," the applicant argued.

Part of the property is also expected to soon have a Trust for Nature covenant, which would require ongoing conservation management.

While the VCAT senior member, Margaret Baird, agreed the proposed truffiere operation "could develop into a genuine farming activity and contribute positively", she was not persuaded a dwelling was justified.

"A dwelling would be convenient, could assist with security and offer some efficiencies. However, a dwelling is not the only way to monitor and secure the property," she said.

"The scheme highlights the higher and highest agricultural land, but also is clear that protecting productive land is not limited to the highest quality land.

"The proposal would result in the incremental loss of productive land and has the potential to lead to a rural living outcome."

No permit was issued for a home to be built at the site.

A Castlemaine resident has used public question time at last week's Mount Alexander Shire council to raise concerns about the ongoing prevalence of graffiti in the town and wider shire.

Retired school teacher, Bill Wiglesworth, has little time for uninvited graffiti in public places and has long been pressing to see it cleaned up wherever it occurs in unsanctioned places in and about Castlemaine.

"Castlemaine has gained the dubious honour of being Victoria’s worst example for graffiti vandalism outside Melbourne," he said.

"An analysis of the data by the Herald Sun (newspaper) found Melbourne, Mount Alexander in Victoria’s northwest and Yarra in the inner city were the three worst areas for graffiti, recording the most offences per capita," Mr Wiglesworth said.

"It comes as the Saturday Herald Sun revealed the average number of requests to clean graffiti doubled in Melbourne’s CBD from 2020 to 2021," he said.

Mr Wiglesworth asked the council what it was doing to address the attention-grabbing matter, which he said was having a negative impact on the amenity and public profile of Castlemaine and surrounds.

"Having attained the distinction – or disgrace – of being Victoria’s worst

example for graffiti vandalism outside Melbourne, surely we we would want to cast off this embarrassing reputation," he said.

"I don’t know how council feels about graffiti because I have received no feedback to previous submissions I have made on this issue.

"I believe that council does not like the appearance of graffiti any more than any of the ratepayers do. I look forward to hearing what council decides to do to eliminate the scourge of graffiti in Castlemaine."

The council's director of infrastructure and development, Michael Annear, responded to Mr Wiglesworth's question at last week's meeting.

Mr Annear said the council was currently in discussion with police and community groups "exploring actions" to address the issue.

But outside the meeting Mr Wiglesworth told the Express he was not impressed with the response.

"Tuesday’s response had no substance to it," he said.

"It was a feel good, 'we’re working on it', 'it’s under control' kind of statement.

"It’s the sort thing I’ve heard for a couple of years. Granted, COVID has complicated matters, but there still has been no consultation that I know of with any members of the graffiti group, which last met 15 months ago."

Mobile disruption for Riddells Creek

Riddells Creek residents may notice some disruption to Telstra mobile coverage for up to 10 days from tomorrow, as NBN installs new fixed wireless antennas on Telstra’s 35m high mobile tower located near Sutherlands Road.

Telstra regional general manager, Steve Tinker, said the NBN work would require the mobile base station to be turned off while their technicians were working on the tower."To help provide some coverage to the town while our site is off the air, Telstra will be connecting a temporary, trailer-mounted base station with an 11m high pole and antenna at the local exchange, which should provide some coverage to the township," Mr Tinker said.

"However, due to the lower antenna height, some people located further away from the site may notice a decline or loss of coverage during this time."

Landline services, NBN internet services and mobile coverage from other providers will not be impacted.

Any calls to Triple Zero from a Telstra mobile that is out of range from Telstra coverage will automatically be diverted to any working mobile network for connection to emergency services.

"For improved mobile coverage in the interim, if residents have access to a wi-fi signal at home or at work, Telstra encourages residents to activate wi-fi calling," Mr Tinker said.

"This is a free setting on most popular mobile phones and allows your mobile to use a Wi-Fi network to make and receive mobile calls.

"To find out more they can google Telstra wifi calling or just search in your settings icon on your phone.

"We know many businesses use the Telstra network for their EFTPOS terminals. However, Telstra does not operate the EFTPOS network; it is operated by financial institutions.

"Many EFTPOS terminals can also be connected using fixed line or Wi-Fi/nbn internet connections. Retailers should contact their bank for more information and details on how to switch between these methods if they are being impacted."

Residents may have received text messages from Telstra advising them of the work from late last week.

Prioritise safety call Woodend's St Ambrose Primary School community is calling for pedestrian safety works to be prioritised in Macedon Ranges Shire Council's draft budget.

About 100 people used Walk to School Day as an opportunity to highlight the dangers for students with a lack of safe crossing points in the Woodend school precinct.

More than 150 parents lodged concerns with the council outlining the need to address three dangerous pedestrian points in the precinct earlier this year.

Reports of near misses with traffic at peak school times are becoming more frequent.

Parent Del Lloyd watched in horror as a car swerved to narrowly miss hitting her son as he crossed the road at Brooke Street earlier this year.

"The thing that scares me is that it was just pure luck that the car swerved to miss him. The other thing is that we didn't do anything wrong – we looked both ways before crossing and we were doing everything we could," she said.

"It's only a limited time before it happens again. I'm outraged that there have been a lot of promises but no action.

There needs to be an urgent solution."

The school had a small win in Macedon Ranges Council’s 2021/22 budget with works approved for a wombat crossing at Brooke Street. Plans later changed when a consultant advised against the move due to the proximity of the crest in the street.

The council was in contact with the school to discuss upcoming pedestrian safety works last week.

Council's director of assets and operations, Shane Walden, said upcoming works included a wombat-style crossing on Urquhart Street and upgrades to several pedestrian road crossing points, including Anslow Street.

"These works are in the current 2021/22 Financial Year budget, to be delivered during the June/July school holiday period," he told the Express.

The council has also engaged a consulting design and traffic safety engineer to complete a design for pedestrian safety upgrade works for the Brooke and Templeton Street intersection. But this work was not listed in the upcoming budget.

Council advised the school that stage one and two of the project were pending approval in the 2022/23 council budget funding (noting it was not included in the draft budget) and if funded the stages would be delivered over two years.

Speaking to the Express last week, school parent Mike Boudrie said the council was starting to get the message that "people want something done about safety in the area".

"People have had enough of no action for so long," he said.

"This is not just a St Ambrose issue. It's a whole community issue."

Residents are encouraged to make a submission to the council's draft budget to have their views on the Woodend school precinct considered as part of the process.

The local community rallied in support of the community owned 63-year-old aged care home, providing fundraising opportunities, desperately hoping it could remain in its current form.

“The full impact of the introduction of the new government funding system should become apparent through the first half of 2023, at which point the board will review the position,” Mr Irvine said.

Focused action over the past eight months has stabilised the organisation’s commercial performance while recent executive appointments include new general manager Kate Hayward and Deirdre Heath as clinical care coordinator.

“Our board and executive is firmly focused on continuing to provide the excellent care to residents that RM Begg is renowned for,” Mr Irvine said.

RM Begg board director Phillip Irvine said the board had resolved to suspend all efforts to amalgamate.

"Instead, the board and management’s effort will now be solely focused on RM Begg’s sustainability as a stand-alone provider,” he said.

Due to ongoing financial instability, the RM Begg Board had actively been considering all options regarding the facility’s future direction, including partnering with a larger organisation.

Nutritious and delicious food made from scratch is on the menu at Gisborne Secondary College.

Students have been sharpening their skills through a cooking course delivered by local culinary nutritionists Expert Eats, Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health, Healthy Heart of Victoria and Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

The classes are based on the cooking videos of comedian and YouTube sensation Nat from ‘Nat’s What I Reckon’.

Nat’s brand of funny and straight-forward cooking videos encourage people to avoid processed foods and experience the joys of real cooking.

Nat appeared via livestream to help launch the program and spoke to the students about his beliefs around the importance of healthy eating and mental wellbeing.

The comedian is also a mental health advocate and has talked about his own experiences with anxiety and depression in his videos.

As well as cooking in class, students take home an ingredient pack to recreate the meal at home.

They are asked to document the experience in their own creative way. This will form part of their class assessment task and they will go in a draw to win a prize pack at the end of the course.

Dietician Jessica Malcolm and culinary nutritionist Jen Beachey from Expert Eats lead the classes.

Expert Eats was established a couple of years ago with the aim of teaching people how to create nutritious food to support gut health and mental health.

“We have been focusing on school-age children and their families,” Jen said.

“Our aim is to prevent poor nutrition and support mental health by developing people’s confidence in knowing how to feed themselves a healthy and nutritious diet.

"Mental health is a complex issue that is affected by many factors, some of which we cannot change but the one thing we can always improve is our eating patterns, and every small positive change counts.”

RAAF thanks for a centenarian veteran A Kyneton resident who was among the first girls in history to be enrolled in the Royal Australian Air Force was last week honoured for her service to the nation during WWII. At age 19, centenarian Margaret Emily Green (nee Selway) was enrolled with 15 other girls at No 1 Recruiting Centre, Queens Street, Melbourne, on March 15, 1941.

She took up duty on March 24, 1941, at Kellow House in St Kilda Road, for training as a teleprinter operator, and began working at the Victorian Barracks on April 14 of that year.

Margaret later trained and worked as a Wireless Air Gunner, sending and receiving messages in Morse code, and went on to become an instructor to new recruits before being promoted to sergeant.

"It was very, very busy," she said of her time there.

In 1942, Margaret met her husband, Lance Robert Green, who was serving in the RAAF as an aircraft mechanic. They married in July 1943 and brought up three daughters in Pascoe Vale.

Her father, William George Selway, had also served in WWI as a Bombardier with the 2nd Australian Field Artillery Brigade and received a military medal for bravery.

Two RAAF members paid a visit to Margaret at RM Begg Aged Care last Wednesday to acknowledge her service and milestone birthday, which was on February 11, 2022, during the RAAF's centenary year (from March 31, 2021 until March 31, 2022).

Hepburn’s $58M draft budget Construction of the Trentham Community Hub is among the major projects highlighted in Hepburn Shire Council's $58.06 million draft budget for 2022/2023.

The budget has a total revenue increase of $15.24M or 37 per cent on the current budget due to a considerable injection of state and federal capital grants and stimulus project funding, along with reimbursement of the high costs related to storm recovery.

“The past two years have been particularly challenging for our community and council acknowledges the significant social and economic impact caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and severe weather events in our shire,” mayor Tim Drylie said.

“Along with allocating funding for the provision of more than 100 services to our community, this budget includes considerable investment in asset renewal and construction, all of which will support the social and economic recovery of our shire.”

Rates will increase at 1.75 per cent in line with the Victorian Government’s Fair Go Rates System.

The council will consider adoption at its Ordinary Meeting on June 28.

Saving gorgeous Gertie Lisa Dennis

Guildford-based animal welfare group Parrot Conservation Australia is appealing for community help following a costly surgery to save one of their beloved sulphur-crested cockatoos.

The local grassroots organisation rehabilitates surrendered and injured birds and has been battling to stay afloat for the past two years due to the impacts of COVID. However, founders Roger Sellwood and Lynn Hughes said when six-year-old Gertie took ill there was no question they would do everything they could to save her.

"Gertie was surrendered to us five years ago. She is a wonderful, loving and gentle bird, such a darling to handle. We couldn't stand to lose her," Roger said.

"In late January 2022 we noticed a lump in her abdomen, thinking she was egg bound we took her to a local avian vet. "The vet squeezed out some hard lumps from her cloaca (bowel) and immediately sent us to an avian specialist Matt Gossell at the Melbourne Bird Clinic Scorseby for expert advice," he said. Matt performed a series of tests and concluded that two hernias were pressing on Gertie's cloaca blocking the urates (solid waste) from leaving her body.

Surgery was performed on the hernias and she spent more then a week in recovery in Melbourne.

"We brought her home and two weeks later returned her for a check up, he was happy and told us to keep an eye on her," Roger said.

"However, eight weeks later we noticed she was prolapsing from straining and had more lumps inside her, resulting in another emergency trip to Melbourne and another surgery to fix the prolapse.

"We will return at the end of May when he will flush out her cloaca to see if the lumps are

So far the bills have come to $3500, which is money the organisation just doesn't have.

The not-for-profit is appealing for donations from the community to help them meet the costs and continue to provide the best care for their other birds.

"We have managed to battle through despite seed and fresh fruit and vegetable costs skyrocketing through COVID and our wonderful volunteers being forced to stay away during the lockdowns," Roger said.

"It's been really difficult with a lack of support and resources but we are hopeful

things will turn around for us now. We'd love to welcome some more volunteers on board, particularly enthusiast young people.

"Our volunteers can build a real rapport with the birds if they are willing to put in the time.

It's so rewarding."

The organisation also strives to educate the community about native birds and save our unique parrots from extinction.

Making a triumphant return to public performances, under the talented and visionary leadership of artistic director Luke Severn, The Gisborne Singers presented four concerts of Henry Purcell’s opera, Dido and Aeneas.

Held on Sunday May 1 and 8, the choir, as it had never been seen before, put on exciting performances of what is the oldest English opera, in the appropriately historic Bluestone Theatre, Kyneton.

Local mezzo-soprano of international acclaim, Kristen Leich, was magnificent in her portrayal of Dido, while tenor Joshua ErdelyiGötz excelled as Aeneas.

The production gave an amazing opportunity for small solo parts within the choir and the newly formed Macedon Ranges Chamber Orchestra, an initiative championed by Luke and The Gisborne Singers, provided wonderful backing.

The work was a great source of achievement for choir members, being a different type of production with a requirement to sing without scores, and a liberating opportunity for self-expression.

Rave reviews followed the first two concerts resulting in a sell-out for the final two.

The choir always welcomes new singers (especially tenors and basses).

Don’t throw away those holey woollies

The Cafe has a few large-eyed needles and some coloured threads but if you want to match it bring some along and if you can, bring a rounded smooth stone or even an orange to stretch the garment over and work on the hole(s). Having your own needle means you can do more at home.

Creatives are encouraged to apply for the Creative Neighbourhood Infrastructure Support Program.

The state government program will provide grants for infrastructure upgrades that enable creatives to develop and present their work in improved, affordable and accessible workspaces. National Reconciliation Week (May 27-June 3) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

Brent will share the work of the Yoorrook Justice Commission, which has begun the first formal truth-telling process into historical and ongoing injustices experienced by First Peoples in Victoria.

Northern Books and Nalderun are partnering up to bring an exciting Reconciliation Week event to Castlemaine.

The event will see a screening of the provocative and award-winning short film, Refugium, followed by a Q&A session with the film's creators.

Refugium is a short film of speculative fiction in the climate emergency context, by artist-researcher Jen Rae (Métis) and author Claire G. Coleman (Noongar).

Centred on First Nations knowledge and protocols, Refugium hacks time and compounding existential crises, delves into moral dilemmas of life and death and hones in on child-centered trauma prevention and intergenerational justice in the coming collapse. What are the conversations that we aren’t having now that might aid us, our loved ones and our future ancestors?

What are the skills and knowledges at the thresholds of being forever lost, overlooked or undervalued that our future generations may need for survival?

What are we willing to give up and/or fight for in the greatest challenge facing humanity?

This view from the future is a final call to act – to imagine and create a world that should have been – before colonial disruption.

Coleman will be signing books on the night and a percentage of sales will be donated to Nalderun to support this event.

Maldon M aldon w winter inter warmer w armer a awaits waits Australia’s First Notable Town, Maldon, is gearing up for a 17-day explosion of all the creativity that lies at the heart of Victoria’s goldfields as part of 'Maldon In Winter 2022'.

Maldon Inc president Clif Edwards said the festival, from June 24 – July 10, coincided with the winter solstice and was a celebration of darkness and of winter’s light with candlelit recitals, a community bonfire and fairy-lit shop windows.

There’ll also be music and theatre, poetry and markets.

"Visitors can arrive in true goldfields style on the steam train from Castlemaine or catch a coach drawn by great Clydesdale horses," he said.

"The centrepiece is the Goldfields Gothic Festival of Dark Ideas, with its Gothic and Victorian Picnic, performance by the legendary dark alternative band IKON, electronic rock and deep and dark poetry, and the Phoenix Burlesque troupe to bring life out of the darkness of deep winter," Edwards said.

The entertainment covers all bases. Award-winning classical guitarist, Clancy McLeod, opens the festival with Bach and beyond.

"Rising star classical guitar virtuoso, Clancy McLeod, is an international prizewinning artist who has demonstrated himself to be a guitarist of the highest calibre and a captivating, expressive and very musical performer," he said.

There will also be nostalgia with a Neil Diamond tribute and all the hits of the ‘60s, as well as Goldfield Gothic’s focus on contemporary culture.

"The well-named Edge Gallery – a centre for leading-edge photographic artists – will also host a spine-tingling exhibition titled, simply, Shroud," Edwards said.

There’ll be dark fashion, a hint of SteamPunk, and live rock 'n' roll to dance away the closing night.

"The log fires will be blazing in all the cafes and the B&Bs are snug. Come and join us," Edwards said.

Thought-provoking and engaging program The Woodend Winter Arts Festival returns over the Queen's Birthday long weekend in June, bringing with it a thought-provoking and engaging program of events.

Artistic director and founder of the festival, Dr Jacqueline Ogeil, said this year’s event would run at a reduced capacity, with bigger and bolder things planned for 2023.

"The festival committee made the decision to play it safe this year and present a scaled-back version of the event," she said.

"This decision was made in light of reduced venues due to renovation works, along with the ongoing COVID situation and the risk involved with both our talent and guests potentially having to cancel at the last minute.

"That being said, we still have a fantastic lineup of events, designed to cater for the young and old and everyone in between.

"Attendees can expect to have their minds challenged, while also having the opportunity to experience world-class classical music in Woodend.

"We also have our much-loved free community fireworks event happening on the Friday night with an expanded program of free performances," Dr Ogeil said.

One of the key events taking place during WWAF 2022 is The Art of a cappella by Ensemble Gombert. Regular performers at WWAF and recognised as Australia’s finest chamber choir, they will delight the audience with a selection a capella classics from throughout the centuries, ranging from

Bach through to Brahms. The performance will take place at 3pm on Sunday June 12 at Woodend’s St Ambrose Church.

Another must-attend event takes place on Monday June 13, when award-winning local filmmaker, Michael Dillon, introduces his international award-winning film A Little Bit Mongolian. The film captures the story of Angus Paradice, a 12-yearold Australian horse rider who dares to race with local Mongolian children in their dangerous long-distance horse races.

Despite a bad fall in a training race, he gets back on the saddle and does well, wins the respect of everyone, and in the process becomes a little bit Mongolian.

One of the delights of the film is its wonderful music score complete with throat and harmonic singing by Australia’s worldclass virtuoso in that field, Dean Frenkel.

Dean himself will be at the event and will wow the crowd with a display of harmonic singing. The audience will then have the opportunity to become a little bit Mongolian themselves as Dean talks them through the art of throat singing, encouraging them to see what their own voices are capable of. It will be a wonderful opportunity to meet Dean, who is visiting Woodend from interstate to attend the event.

A Little Bit Mongolian and Singing with Dean Frenkel will take place at 10.30am and again at 2.30pm at the Norma Richardson Hall, Woodend.

Local filmmaker Michael Dillon will introduce his international award-winning film A Little Bit Mongolian on June 13.

Prints and engravings from yesteryear A large eclectic collection of European engravings and prints will be on sale at Kyneton’s historic Bluestone Theatre on May 28.

The works were collected from markets in Switzerland and France by former Kyneton High School student, Garry Littman, who grew up in Macedon and began his career as a journalist on the Gisborne and Macedon Telegraph.

Before he moved permanently to Geneva in 1995, Garry spent many holidays rummaging in flea markets in Geneva and cities in France returning to Australia with the works.

In a recent interview Garry said it was a bit of an obsession.

"It is extraordinary what you can find," he said.

"Some of them are originals and quite old. These engravings and prints were the historical documents of a time before photography.

"I even found one of the first illustrations of a kangaroo from Captain Cook's first voyage, which was printed in a book published under the name of the botanist Joseph Banks.

"My favourite pieces were detailed A3 size drawings from The Encyclopaedia of Work published in Paris by between 1751 and 1780 by the French philosopher, art critic and writer, Denis Diderot, and French mathematician, physicist and philosopher, Jean le Rond d'Alembert.

"It was a massive encyclopaedia which documented every profession imaginable, well before the industrial revolution.

"Honestly, it makes the Encyclopaedia Britannica look like a dog-eared paperback.

"On a lucky day I might find a chapter or two from the original encyclopaedia, hiding under a torn poster or in the bottom of a carton."

The donated works, some quite rare, cover genres such as early advertising, mapping, old newspapers from Paris, London and Maldon, geographical locations, natural history and, as was the era, a section aptly labelled ‘doom and gloom’ plus many others including some with coloured tinting.

Other items for sale on the day will be books and bric-a-brac plus there will be the opportunity of a guided tour through the theatre itself.

The Friends of the Bluestone Theatre plan to raise funds for the purchase of new equipment – their primary goal for the past decade.

From a derelict building in 2012 to a functioning theatre space today, the building's transformation has been facilitated by the local community, in the form of Friends of the Bluestone Theatre, by council and with assistance from Regional Arts Victoria.

The renovations and refurbishments to the theatre saw it reopen in 2015 and since that time the Friends of the Bluestone Theatre have donated $20,000 towards the initial works, added new stage lighting with computerised console, a sound system linking the stage to the dressing rooms, hot water services to both dressing rooms and kitchen, a dishwasher plus the artistic notice board at the front of the theatre.

Mr Littman has donated the works to Friends of the Bluestone Theatre and said many of his 'treasures' cost less than 15 Swiss francs – that's about $22!

"One person's junk is another person's treasure," he said.

"Whoever buys them should know they are probably the only examples of their kind in Australia."

The indoor sale will also include books and bric-a-brac and in attendance will be members of the Friends of the Bluestone Theatre who will be colourfully and theatrically costumed.

The sale will be held from 10am to 2pm.

Make a game plan Shane Lucas, CEO, Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation Recently released Nielsen data shows an average of 948 gambling ads were broadcast every day on free-to-air TV in Victoria in 2021 – a 250 per cent increase since 2016.Alarmingly, saturation levels of sports betting ads are shown during weekday primetime family viewing slots, and in live sport after 8.30pm.

And while the ads always show betting to be a fun, social activity – ‘bet with your mates’ – the reality is that gambling is all about risk and can lead to negative consequences.

Kids may not be the gambling industry’s target market, but they absorb the ads during their favourite shows and weekend footy matches and come to see betting on sport as normal.

tion to grow up with these ads is now the largest group of sports bettors in Victoria.

Night of fun and fundraising

For a group of about 30 locals, it was time to restore some fun in the community with a night of entertainment at the Mount Macedon Hotel.

'Satin and Lace' was the theme for the evening, with people swapping the casual lockdown look, for high heels, jewellery, fur, feathers and colourful shirts.

Annie Mann, of Gisborne's Ann Maurie Salon, was the organiser of the evening, which also raised $1000 for Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation.

“Our night of fun was a feel-good night for the community.

Locals getting together, supporting a local business, and most importantly putting some fun back into our lives,” Annie said.

“We are proud to be part of this very special community, it is such a beautiful place to live.”

Leading Melbourne DJ Darren Watson kept the guests entertained and prizes were presented to those judged to have gone to the most effort to get into the spirit of the evening.

Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation Chairman David Mann presented the prizes, which were donated by Paper World and Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation.

Plans for Black Forest Drive revised

Regional Roads Victoria says feedback from the local community on proposed safety improvements at Black Forest Drive is helping to inform the design of the road upgrade.

The community was invited to provide feedback on a range of proposed safety improvements to the road between Woodend and Macedon in-person and online last year.

Following significant feedback about changing the lane configuration, RRV is now developing draft road designs that will enhance safety for all road users while maintaining the current configuration.

Proposed improvements currently being

considered include installing pedestrian islands, upgrading intersections to provide safer access turning into and out of Black Forest Drive, road surface improvements, sealing entrances to key side roads and some driveway entrances and line marking.

RRV is exploring opportunities to install more signs that alert drivers to cyclists along the road and sealing the entrances to priority side roads and some driveways to provide smoother journeys for all road users.

The state government made a $6 million investment to make safety improvements on Black Forest Drive in the

Victorian Budget 2021-22.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the government had listened to local concerns and would be revising plans for Black Forest Drive to better meet the needs of the community.

“We’ll continue to work closely with the community to improve roads in the Macedon area to increase safety for locals and visitors,” she said.Draft road designs will be released for community feedback in late 2022 with works expected to start in 2023.

Festival to celebrate ‘Jubilee Gold’

‘Jubilee Gold’ is the celebration theme for Kyneton’s Daffodil and Arts Festival its 50th year in 2022 from September 1-11.

Gold for daffodils and gold to symbolise 50 years can inspire ideas for decorations for parade entries and Kyneton’s shops to reflect the theme.

The festival’s Daffodil Art Prize and Art Photography Prize will again give local artists and photographers the opportunity to exhibit their talents. Original artworks containing daffodils entered in the Daffodil Art Prize will attract a prize of $500 with an additional $200 offered for the best watercolour in that competition in memory of the late Esther Rose, a two-time Art Prize winner.

The Art Photography Prize 2022, also open, will attract a prize of $250 with $100 prize for the runner-up.

Rhain DiPilla of the Old Auction House will assist with the exhibition, as in 2019, and will exhibit all of the art photography works at the gallery at 52-56 Mollison Street Kyneton during the festival.

The winners of Daffodil Art Prizes, along with the Art Photography Prizes and Rotary Youth Art Awards, will be announced at the opening of the festival on September 1 when daffodil art prize entries and winners of the

As a former Premier League netballer and member of the Adelaide Thunderbirds National League squad, there was once a time when her future looked to depend upon her physical abilities and certainly, it had gotten her far.

Treble for Osborne Bill West

In a long career Kyneton racehorse trainer George Osborne can reflect on many highlights.

Last week was one of those when he chalked up three winners in the space of five days, two on the Ballarat Synthetic and one at Geelong.

These lightly raced gallopers all have plenty of potential, and Osborne and staunch client stable supporter Alex Babauskis share ownership in all three.

The winning streak began at Ballarat, with Hal-

lowed Ground – starting at $3.50 – easily winning a 1200m Maiden with John Allen in the saddle.

Later in the day grey four-year-old Kerioth, broke through for his fourth win by leading throughout to win a BM58 event.

Apprentice Sheridan Clarke took Kerioth to the front and won by 3.75 lengths at double figure odds.

The third winner for the week for Osborne came at Geelong when Kyteler, starting at $3.70, had two lengths to spare in a Maiden.

Pétanque season never ends Woodend Hanging Rock Pétanque Club's season finished at the end of March, but the club has certainly been busy since then.

In April a group of players spent a successful day with the Maldon Pétanque Club, where Shirley Marshall won their raffle prize.

Also, in the name of pétanque the club ran a fundraiser for Ukraine on a cold Thursday afternoon with 12 teams playing and $300 going to UNICEF for their cause.

The club then had five teams head off to the Grampians in April for a fun and successful weekend to play in the Northwest Cup. On Sunday May 1, the Rootes Car Club from Melbourne came up to Hanging Rock to challenge for the Rootes and Rockers cup, with WHRPC's Rod Gell winning it back for the locals.

A delicious lunch of roast lamb with all the trimmings pre-

pared by the committee finished off another fun day at The Rock.

The President’s Cup was held on Thursday Mayth in honour of Marilyn Steel, Chinka Steel’s wife, who was a treasured founding member of the club and helped and supported him in the 20 years the club has been prospering.

This night took on a Mexican theme with 30 members doing their bit and dressing up Mexican.

On May 15, members had lunch and a few games of pétanque at Darraweit Guim Cidery, with Wayne Mee taking home the winning prize.

The pétanque season never really ends, there is always something in the pipeline for the club's committed members to attend. Either in the city or around the region, as two star members, Ruth Giddings and Rod Gell, will tell you!

Footy fundraiser returns

After a two year hiatus, the beloved MAIN Game is back!

An event like no other this side of the Great Divide, the MAIN Game returns to Castlemaine on Sunday June 12.

A community engagement and major fundraising initiative for local radio station 94.9 MainFM, the day features a game of Aussie rules footy between the Radio Galahs and the Rockatoos at the historic Camp Reserve.

The teams are made up of MainFM presenters, local musicians and other respectable members of the community of mixed ages, all genders and mixed abilities.

Sponsorship and events manager at MainFM, Sue McLennan, said they couldn't wait to hit the field.

"This year more than ever the event has a real community focus and we had an overwhelming response to the player call out,” she said.

“We’re hoping the MAIN Game will help raise awareness and garner interest in the radio station as a lead up to our annual subscriber drive, Radiothon, which begins on June 17.”

The MAIN Game players were lucky enough to train alongside the unbeaten Castlemaine Football Netball Club Senior Women’s team recently at the Camp Reserve in preparation for game day.

Mixed bag in MCDFNL Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League sides contested round five matches in crisp autumn conditions last Saturday.

Newstead played host to Lexton. The Newstead Seniors made an admirable start to their contest kicking 4-2 to the Tigers 4-3 in the first term to only trail by one point at quarter time.

The Steaders continued to work hard in the second term adding another 3-4 while holding Lexton to another four for the term and were within three points at halftime.

Lexton lifted in the third quarter outgunning the home side with another 6-2 to 1-1 and opened up a 34 point advantage at three quarter time despite the Roos' best defensive efforts.

In the last term Newstead threw everything they had at the Tigers kicking another 3-2 and holding their opponents to just 1-3. But unfortunately the third quarter let them down and they were unable to come back going down by 23 points.

Final scores Newstead 4.2, 7.6, 8.7, 11.9 (75) to Lexton 4.3, 8.3, 14.5, 15.8 (98).

Goal kickers for Newstead were Joel Smith, Angus Adams, Bailey Moffatt, Tyler James, Anthony Robins 2 and Kieran Sait.

Over at the Bill Woodfull Reserve Maldon had a better day of it defeating Dunolly by 25 points.

Maldon got the jump on the Eagles in the first term kicking four goals to two to lead by 14 points at quarter time The second quarter was more evenly matched with both sides kicking four goals each.

At half time 15 points separated the sides and Dunolly were still in the hunt.

The arm wrestle continued in the third term with both sides kicking another two apiece. However, the margin could have been greater but for Maldon's inaccuracy.

To their credit the Eagles continued to battle hard in the final term with both

teams adding another three goals to their tally. However, in the end Maldon's first term effort was the telling factor.

Maldon 4.5, 8.8, 10.13, 14.18 (102) to Dunolly 2.3, 6.5, 8.8 11.11 (77).

The Bulldogs made a bright start kicking two goals to the Lions' six in the opening term, but the visitors went on with the job in the subsequent three terms and left the home side in their wake.

Volunteers are the heart and soul of the Trentham Saints, and all involved celebrated National Volunteer Week from May 16-22.

The club gave thanks to all of its wonderful volunteers – committee members, coaches, team managers, sports trainers, canteen staff, cooks, field umpires, goal umpires, timekeepers, runners, water carriers, scorers, gatekeepers and everybody else who devoted their time to the Saints.

Upcoming events to put on the calendar: June 4 is the annual sponsors life member lunch. June 25 Buddy Day and last ticket out, August 8 the senior club ball. Finally the 130-year club celebration and 1992 premiership reunion.

Trentham hosted Royal Park in perfect conditions for football on Saturday.

The Saints’ senior side was far too good for a struggling Royal Park making it five from five to start the season. Trentham 35.22 (232) d Royal Park 6.4 (40).

NETBALL Netball teams enjoyed the sunshine on the court. It made club members' hearts fill with pride when the entire U11 football team lined the end of the court for the 13 and under netball to show their support.

The club is very proud of its junior program and those who lead them.

The 13&Us improved and fielded a full team, with a 2-30 scoreline. H. Hopper was best.

The 15&U were gallant in their 8-48 defeat, with K. Foreshaw best.

17&U came together in the second half but were unable to overcome the Tigers. 19 vs 28. Best player J Bourke.

The C graders displayed a new spirit, winning 33-23 with H. Wheeldon best.

The B graders drew 27-27 with M. Matheson best.

A Grade played a fast tense game with 60 minutes of spectators on the edge of their seats, a close game with a win. Final score 53 vs 51. Best player S Ford.

Woodend’s historic 3 from 3 Bill West

Another chapter was written Woodend Golf Club’s proud 120-year-old history on Sunday.

“I’m estatic … to win three pennants on the same day has never happened in our club before,” president Barney Hearnden said after a pulsating day of Dalhousie District Golf Association finals played at Broadford.

“And this time we’ve won the really big one (Division One Scratch). It’s 40 years since Woodend last landed this one."

Other nearby clubs didn’t miss out either.

Lancefield won the Division 2 Scratch Final to earn promotion to division one next season, and Trentham captured the Handicap Division 4 pennant with a clean sweep victory against Hidden Valley.

From 9am onwards, in fine conditions for golf, intrepid players battled for superiority around the Broadford course.

“Congratulations to all the winners and to all players for making the finals, and thanks to the Dalhousie committee for running the day and to Broadford for hosting everyone,” DDGA president Mary Campbell said at the after-match presentations.

For Woodend, a triple pennant success, with three wins from three starters (teams of five players ) in the finals was the ultimate aim. Hearnden, who has been witnessing a growth in membership and sponsors, plus significant course improvements in the past few months, thinks the pennant treble will give the club a further kick along.

Not surprisingly, there were prolonged celebrations at Woodend on Sunday evening. Congratulations flowed in from various quarters. Some had stayed up late watching the absorbing coverage

of the 2022 election vote count on Saturday night, with Labor coming to power federally after nine years on the Opposition benches; then some even watched the American PGA coverage as well.

GOLF results

Winners at Yea A Lancefield trio won the annual Yea Bowl event on Thursday with a combined 94 stableford points.

Pictured (from left) are a very happy Sheena Flentjar, Kaylene Cruise and Anne Robinson after the trophy presentations.

The previous week Sheena clinched the 36-hole Yarrawonga Autumn Stableford Championship.

There were 21 teams competing, from 12 different clubs, continuing the run of such events across Dalhousie District clubs.

In the men’s stableford at Lancefield on Saturday, the winner was Mason Memmolo (handicap 5) with 37 points, on a countback from James Whiteford (19).

Canadian foursomes for the ladies on Wednesday saw Sandra Matthews and Carole Mee victorious with 70.5.

Legends: Very good scores with the course in superb conditions, with Jason Byron (9) best with 40 points, one clear of Peter Beard (32).

Castlemaine In Saturday stableford, A-grade was won by Les Prendergast (8 and 38) from runner-up Megan Carroll (11 and 35).

B-grade was won by Harald Domanski (14 and 38)

from runner-up Mark Brackley (13 and 34), and C-grade went to Wayne Toohey (20 and 35) from runner-up Jo Deppeler (28 and 33).

Kyneton Ben Hogan stole the limelight in Kyneton’s stableford event on Saturday with an exceptional 44 points (handicap 15), seven clear of B-grade runner-up Adam Parsonage (16).

A-grade: Pete Robbins (8) 35, from Tim Kirk (9) 32; C – David Ryan (20) 38 from Jing Biscocho (22) 34.

In the semi-finals of the RSL Singles knockout Terry Gamble defeated David Pilcher 3/2, and Billy McKee finished 1up on Ivan Smolcic.

The Les Glanfield Memorial 4BBB stableford took place on Wednesday.

Graham Hackett and Bob Bennett were the men’s winners with 44 points from Gordon Stevens and Tom May 40, while the mixed went to David Austin and Michelle Werner with 41, from Noel Aldis and Robyn MacRae 37.

A very cold Tuesday saw all players struggle.

Julie Harris (21) had 29 points to edge out Deb Kohlman (21) in A-grade, while B-grade, including a $75 voucher for best score of the day, went to Beth Murray (27) on 32 points, from Banksie Buckley (31) 31. Joan Gibbs and Anne Bennett were NTPs. Mount Macedon Delightful weather for the second round of the Mount Macedon championships on Saturday saw a massive form reversal from the field – players appreciated the absence of bitter winds and drizzle from the previous round.

Alex Fraser won both the stroke and A-grade handicap with a fine 68-1-6.

Nathan Farley (15) and Dave Dunstall (28) returned nett 70s to win the respective B and C grade awards.

This Saturday’s Gisborne Foodworks May monthly medal will decide the overall club champion and the handicap winners in each grade.

There are still plenty of players in contention.

Wintry conditions greeted the field of 19 on Wednes-

day for gentlemen’s stableford, with Steve Barrow welcomed back from a lengthy hiatus from golf.

Young Ben Bonk found his handicap slashed from 31 to 22 after his par bisque win, but still performed creditably.

A-grade – Don Bubeck (15) 34 points, from Marcus Ward (9) 33 on a countback. B – Peter Watson (21) 37 from Gary Liddy (20) 35.

Romsey Mal Mottram is Romsey Golf Club’s 2022 champion after shooting three consistent rounds of 80, 82, 80 – 242.

The club captain wrapped up the title in ideal conditions on Saturday, when the three grades appeared to be virtually decided with 18 holes left to play.

Mottram also took out the 54-hole A-grade handicap award with a total of 224.

In B-grade, a fine last round of 86 enabled Pat Chisholm to finish on 263, two clear of 36-hole leader Andrew Laing who settled for the handicap award.

John Freestone wrapped up another C-grade title with 101, 97, 96 – 294; he also won the handicap award with 219.

The day’s 18-hole winner was Andrew Clement 77-968, from Freestone 96-25-71 and Chisholm 86-13-73.

Scott Williams, Mitch Atlas and Mick Squire were the NTPs. Wednesday stroke: Darlene Baker 91-16-75, from Chris Manktelow 109-32-77. Least putts – Rob Slade 27.

Romsey is still in contention in the women’s pennant series.

Trentham The first round of Trentham’s doubles knockout took place on Saturday, with a stableford for the other members.

There were 20 ladies in action with scores close in both grades.

Top spot battle

Goal shooter Emily Barbour was in dynamic form for Woodend-Hesket Under 19.5s against Macedon.

Macedon consolidated its position on top of the Riddell League Agrade netball ladder with a tight three-goal victory over second-placed Woodend-Hesket on Saturday.

The encounter at Tony Clarke Reserve had a finals like atmosphere, and the Ciara Stewart coached Cats were up to the challenge. The Hawks missed several good scoring chances in the first quarter, and defences were generally on top.

Their seventh round clash provided the closest finish across the four grad Macedon is now six points clear on top of the ladder, with Wallan, Western Rams, Woodend-Hesket and Diggers Rest all in the mix for a finals berth.

Scores: Macedon 35 d Woodend-Hesket 32, Western Rams 55 d Riddell 50, Diggers Rest 62 d Lancefield 42, Melton Centrals 52 d Romsey 31, Wallan the bye.

In an ominous display Macedon B-graders defeated WoodendHesket by 15 goals, and ladder leader Lancefield held off a strong challenge from Diggers Rest.

Warning on behaviour

The Riddell District Football Netball League has issued a warning about an unacceptable increase in poor behaviour and unacceptable language by a minority of players and officials.

Football operations manager, Aaron clean, said irrespective of whether it was directed towards umpires, players, officials or volunteers, it would not be tolerated by the league.

"I ask that everyone treats each other with respect as everyone is doing their best," McLean said.

In a big game for both clubs, Macedon footballers gained a vital win against arch-rivals Woodend-Hesket by 19 points under lights on a cold and misty Saturday evening.

Cats’ coach Al Meldrum was much happier than earlier in the season, readily admitting his side had not been close to playing its best football; yet the display against the Hawks was a decisive improvement when it mattered.

The Bill Tunn Cup was at stake, and Macedon was pleased to regain this sought-after silverware from their rivals.

Macedon ruckman Jordan Dyer won the medal for best player afield.

Goals were scarce, with just six being scored in the second half after the Cats held a five-point lead at half-time.

It was anyone’s game, and the Cats welcomed back former top forward Matt Knox from retirement, adding a further dimension to the forward line where the dangerous Jason Cooke contributed four valuable majors.

The Hawks could not get a run on, and three points, rather than goals, early in the last term were costly.

Macedon moved into fifth place, with the Hawks sliding to sixth, facing a virtual eight-point match against fourth-placed Romsey this Saturday. The Cats should be able to defeat Western Rams at Tony Clarke Reserve.

The unpredictability of this season has left keen footy followers wondering what will unfold. COVID and injuries have played a role.

The top three, Wallan, Riddell and Diggers Rest, have edged clear to a degree.
