Housing highlighted The identification of possible sites for new social housing on council land at Maldon and Newstead are among highlights contained in Mount Alexander Shire Council's newly adopted annual report for 2020-21.

Positives detailed in the report on the financial year that was, include a significant

boost in unbudgeted grants and contributions that lifted the council's total income to $46.9 million.

After expenses that were slightly lower than had been budgeted, the council recorded a $3.9 million operating surplus, the new report shows.

Amy Hume Gisborne veterinarian Robert Payne has turned a stress-relieving hobby into a charitable contribution for patients in need – but not the four-legged kind that you'd expect.

On his days away from the clinic, the Macedon resident takes to the skies as a volunteer for Angel Flight.

The charity coordinates non-emergency flights to help country people trying to deal with the triple trouble of bad health, poor finances and daunting distance.

All flights are free and may involve patients travelling to medical facilities anywhere in Australia.

"Angel Flight has opened my eyes to the fact that country people can be stuck

in remote areas that makes hospital trips more of a challenge," Rob said.

"In a plane we can fly them there in sometimes a quarter of the time it would take them to drive. And, they get to relax and enjoy some nice scenery along the way."

He has flown to missions as far as Sydney and Adelaide to help get people where they need to be.

"Many of the patients require treatment for chemotherapy and repeat follow-ups.

Some flights have been for check-ups following trauma surgeries or patients with heart complications," Rob said.

"There have also been some to reunite family during the pandemic."

Rob shares a Cirrus plane with four partners and received his pilot's licence about 10 years ago.

"I became a pilot later in life – my wife says it was a midlife crisis – and I found that I really enjoyed it," he said.

"About five years ago I spoke to someone who volunteers for Angel Flight and that's when I decided to take it up myself.

It's a good charity and one I really love supporting."

Midlife crisis or not, Rob's new-found hobby has now seen him transport about 28 patients in the name of charity. His air time for Angel Flight totals about 90 hours!

His first mission for the charity was a flight from Mount Gambier to Adelaide in 2018.

Angel Flight Australia hit a major milestone of 20 million kilometres flown helping country people attend city medical appointments earlier this month.

Car ram charges

A Macedon man has been charged following an alleged ramming of a police vehicle in the CBD on November 12.

The 18-year-old was charged with: aggravated intentional exposure of police officer to risk by driving (x6); reckless conduct endangering life; and theft of motor vehicle. He was remanded and is expected to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court. A 19-year-old Lancefield man was interviewed and released from custody. He is expected to be charged on summons with theft of motor vehicle.

It is alleged a stolen white Toyota Corolla reversed into a police vehicle at the intersection of Queen and La Trobe Streets about 9.45pm.

Officers had stopped behind the Toyota and were approaching the car to speak with the driver when the driver reversed into the police vehicle.

The driver then allegedly collided with two other vehicles that were stationary in traffic on La Trobe Street before driving off.

The pair got out of the vehicle in nearby Spencer Street where police arrested them.

The two civilian vehicles, along with a police vehicle, were all towed from the scene with moderate damage.

No one was physically injured during the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing and investigators would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or with dashcam footage, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at: crimestoppersvic.com.au

Riddell PSP progresses A Precinct Structure Plan for the proposed development of land north of Amess Road is progressing to guide future urban growth for the Riddells Creek township.

Macedon Ranges Council resolved in August to continue the PSP process, with the council to consider the rezoning request as the planning authority.

MRSC manager of strategic planning and environment, Rob Ball, said the council’s strategic planners would continue to work closely with the applicant, development consortium Sector Advantage, to progress the plan.

“A PSP provides a ‘blueprint’ for development and infrastructure investment that will occur over many years by outlining important features of the precinct for local communities such as roads, parks, key transport connections and areas for housing,” Mr Ball said.

The Amess Road PSP area covers about 100 hectares and is the first PSP proposed within the shire.

The council says preparing and finalising the Amess Road PSP is critical to ensuring Riddells Creek has an adequate supply of land to meet the current and future housing needs of the community.

The site has been zoned for urban growth since 2017 when MRSC and the Minister for Planning identified two future growth areas to the north and south of the existing town.

This followed consultation with the community on the Riddells Creek Structure Plan, and the subsequent Planning Scheme Amendment C100.

A stunning nightly light show kicks off on the front of the Castlemaine Town Hall this Thursday to mark the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.

Planning officers advised the council of this consultation feedback in early 2020 and have since continued to work with the developer to refine a draft PSP for the site north of Amess Road.

“Completing the PSP process is vital to give everyone a clearer idea of the scale of how this, or other future proposals, might fit in with the identity and neighbourhood character of Riddells Creek and its surrounds,” Mr Ball said.

Next steps The council’s strategic planners are working closely with Sector Advantage to finalise technical studies and specifics on how the PSP will ensure an appropriate outcome for the Riddells Creek community.

“Some of the key elements will be delivering housing choices, infrastructure, and protecting heritage, character, landscape and environment values,” Mr Ball said.

A report on the status of a related project, the Riddells Creek Movement Study – which covers transport and traffic issues – is due to be presented to the council in November 2021.

“We are advising the developer to prepare a PSP that responds to the character of Riddells Creek and achieves the best outcome possible for the community, if it is to be approved by the council,” he said.

“If the council approves the PSP, further community consultation will be undertaken as part of the Planning Scheme Amendment process.”

Housing highlighted

The light show, created by local resident Jim Coad in partnership with Council, is a visual vigil acknowledging the women and children impacted by family violence in Mount Alexander Shire.

Creating a ‘safe space’

Hepburn Council has elected Creswick Ward's Cr Tim Drylie as mayor and Birch Ward's Cr Jen Bray as deputy mayor.

Cr Drylie said he hoped to continue the good work the council had begun in forging positive and more engaged community relations.

"The year ahead may still present uncertainties as we once again emerge and deal with the physical, mental and financial stresses of the COVID pandemic, the damage from unprecedented climate change related weather events and constant adaptation to new and different ways of relating, living and working together,” he said.

ELM team members Rachel Stewart, Rosie Annear and Jeremy Forbes invite community members to be part of an initiative to create a ‘Safe Space’ in Castlemaine.

Lisa Dennis Suicide prevention and postvention group ELM (Every Life Matters) has received funding to create a new 'Safe Space' in Castlemaine to support community members struggling with mental health issues. The dedicated volunteers are now on the hunt for a suitable venue for the new initiative and members of the community who would be interested in being part of the working group to make the important new project a reality. ELM is also seeking community members with lived experience who may like to be trained to act as staff in the new space, which is envisaged will open around March next year.

The new ELM Castlemaine Safe Space is being funded by grants from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal and Mount Alexander Shire Council.

ELM treasurer Rachel Stewart has been leading the push to establish the service and said the space would be modelled on the New South Wales Ministry of Health initiative 'Towards Zero Suicides – Alternatives to Emergency Department Presentations' initiative, which has seen the establishment of 20 safe spaces across NSW. "However, our local space will be more geared toward anyone who has any kind of 'mental health struggles' or problems, who would like to talk to a trained peer who has had any type of similar struggles themselves," Rachel said "We aim to offer assistance to all, before thoughts around suicide may occur, or if they already have. All are welcome to attend our space, with no appointment

necessary," she said.

The Castlemaine Safe Space is being co-designed by Roses in the Ocean who worked with the NSW Ministry of Health in designing the new NSW Safe spaces.

ELM chair Rosie Annear said the lived experience peers would be trained to respond effectively based on their own knowledge and empathy.

"We are currently calling for working group members who would like to help make decisions on how the space should be set up, what we need to consider and how we can be most effective to help all who may need or want it," she said.

"It will be a very special place where there is no judgement and people can come for help and early intervention before things get to crisis point."

The new space would likely be open for around six hours a week initially, over three sessions of two hours.

ELM deputy chair and HALT (Hope Assistance Local Tradies) founder Jeremy Forbes said they wanted to create a space that was a welcoming place for people from all walks of life.

"Whether you're a tradie, sportsperson, young person or senior, it will be a great place for those taking the first step to seek help with their mental health," he said.

"A warm and welcoming non-clinical environment where they can chat to a trained person with lived experience of mental health or suicidality."

Epic orchestra performance Some of the members of 50-piece Resonance String Orchestra ahead of its live concert in the Castlemaine Town Hall on Saturday.

Eve Lamb This Saturday is a special one for Resonance String Orchestra as it delivers Epic, its debut Mount Alexander Shire live performance in the Castlemaine Town Hall.

Led by its artistic patron Zoe Knighton of Victoria's acclaimed Flinders quartet, the 50-piece community string orchestra comprises both adult and junior members who live in the Macedon Ranges and Mount Alexander Shire areas.

"This is an exciting year for us as we expanded our group from Woodend to Castlemaine," orchestra member and second violin with the orchestra, Jasmin McFarlane told the Express ahead of Saturday's concert.

The 3pm matinee performance in the town hall is a much-anticipated event, not just because it represents an emergence from lockdown for the musicians, but also because it brings the respective Woodend

and Castlemaine-based chapters together to play in public for the first time.

"I think every single person in the orchestra is incredibly excited about the concert, and having been able to play together again in person in the last few weeks has just been so uplifting – a much-needed morale booster," says McFarlane whose 11-year-old daughter also plays violin in the orchestra.

"Having said that, it’s amazing how we’ve stuck together over the last two years, with a lot of Zoom rehearsals, especially last year.

"The weekly rehearsal are definitely a highlight of my week, and even through last year the Zoom sessions have served to give us some sense of normality among all the uncertainties.

"We missed our normal annual concert last year, although we did have a Zoom concert.

"So the concert this year will be special for many reasons. It’s a celebration of this

amazing organisation and the people who lead and support it.

"We can’t wait to perform in front of a real-life audience.

"We do have a truly epic repertoire for this concert and our amazing artistic patron Zoe Knighton from the Flinders Quartet will also be performing."

The program features works by Vaughan Williams, Respighi, Warlock, Goltermann, Mussorgsky, Saint-Saens, Elgar, Bartok and more.

Bookings for Saturday's concert open online tomorrow, November 24, through TryBooking with in-person tickets available subject to easing of restrictions, and inperson attendance will require full vaccination for COVID-19.

Katy, a nurse and midwife herself, said the pandemic had been hard for all, especially those working in COVID areas.

"I knew myself I was exhausted, scared, worried and sad about what was going on around me," she said.

"Traditionally healthcare workers are very stoic, resilient and don’t complain, but finally I started asking my colleagues – 'How are you really doing?' And the stories came flooding in.

"I was in tears reading messages from exhausted friends on the frontline. And shocked at some of the realities they are living through. I knew I needed to do something."

Katy began sending care packages to her friends and her sisters soon asked to be involved too.

"I told them, there are so many nurses and healthcare workers – I don’t know them all! And so the idea of sending boxes of gifts to the wards in need was born," she said.

Initially, the sisters sent messages to friends and family to ask for donations and words of support. The message has now spread far and wide.

"We have been inspired by the generosity and heartfelt care shown," Katy said.

"Many individuals have donated, as well as local community groups. People donate items, we collate them and get them to wards and units hardest hit."

The idea of personal messages from both adults and children has been important to the sisters, to build a personal connection and enable people to express their gratitude.

The Newstead community is lobbying Mount Alexander Shire Council in the hope of getting flashing safety lights installed to highlight the 40km/h zone near Newstead Primary School on the busy Pyrenees Highway.

A document with more than 170 signatures was presented to the council at its November council meeting last week amid growing school concerns around safety for students and their families.

It requests the council to support calls to have flashing LED lights installed at the existing 40km/h limit signs marking the school zone.

"We just want the flashing lights to help slow cars between 8am and 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm (on school days)," school

principal Kathy Callander told the Express, outside last week's meeting.

"The Carisbrook Primary School and the Castlemaine Steiner School are also on the Pyrenees Highway and they already have flashing lights to mark their school zones.

"We are literally on the highway here," Ms Callander said.

"The safety of our kids and families is paramount. It should be a given.

"We continue to see incidents of cars not slowing down or (dangerously) overtaking.

"We don't want to see that end in a horrific accident."

At last week's council meeting, council CEO Darren Fuzzard said that while the document bearing 172 names was not able to be formally accepted as a petition it would be acknowledged as a joint letter and also indicated steps would be taken to

A stunning nightly light show on Castlemaine’s Town Hall will lead Mount Alexander Shire Council’s support for the annual 16 Days of Activism global campaign to end gender-based violence.

The light show, starting on November 25, will feature an artistic representation of the impact of family and gender-based violence in the shire. In the last year alone, there were 201 incidents of family violence reported to the Mount Alexander Shire police.

Council’s community projects officer Mel Fowler said the light show would be a visual vigil to acknowledge and show support for local families impacted by family violence and to encourage people to reflect on and address the causes.

It’s part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.

“This campaign, led by the United Nations, aims to empower our communities and organisations to address gender inequalities and ultimately eradicate violence against women and girls,” Ms Fowler said.

“During the 16 days we are inviting the community to be immersed in the beauty of the show and reflect on how we can come together to end gender-based violence and violence against women and children.

“We hope that this artistic work can spark conversations about what respect and gender equality means to them and how entrenched gender norms, stereotypes and societal expectations shape who we are and our relationships.

“We know that gender inequalities drive violence against women and girls so the more we address and eradicate these

inequalities, the safer our communities will be.”

Renowned Castlemaine artist Jim Coad has designed the visual vigil, which will project burning candles onto the front of the town hall in Lyttleton Street, to highlight the number of family violence incidents in our shire.

It will run nightly from 8.30pm to 10pm from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day).

Council is leading the ’16 Days’ campaign locally with support from a working group, which includes members from the community and Loddon Mallee Women’s Health, and with funding from Domestic Violence Victoria and the Domestic Violence Resource Centre. * See our special 16 Days feature on page 29.

Talking storm recovery

Macedon Ranges residents have the chance to join Dr Rob Gordon for a webinar reflecting on the six months since the June 9 storm.

Dr Gordon will unpack some of the typical reactions to expect after such an event. He will share advice on how to make sure residents and their families establish a successful recovery process.

Dr Gordon is a clinical psychologist who has been working in the field of disaster recovery since Ash Wednesday in 1983. He is a consultant for the Red Cross and Victorian Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.

Dr Gordon has worked with people and communities after Black Saturday and Black Summer, the Christchurch Earthquake, as well as numerous floods, fires, cyclones and other events throughout Australia and New Zealand.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council CEO Bernie O’Sullivan said the storm clean-up was continuing six months on.

“But it’s not just the physical and environmental impacts that are going to take time for the community to recover from," he said.

"We’re delighted to have Dr Rob Gordon share his expertise and advice with affected landowners in the Macedon Ranges."

The webinar will run from 1pm to 2.30pm on December 2.

NEW SELF-STORAGE OPENING NOVEMBER 2021 IN KYNETON

Church go ahead Kyneton Plymouth Brethren Christian Church’s proposal for a fourth place of worship in town has Macedon Ranges Council approval with minor changes.

A church, planned for 148 High Street, has been allowed for up to 121 people to gather, down from up to 160 monthly.

The council has allowed a reduction in parking spaces of 12, meaning 36 car parks will available on site.

The church will operate from 5.30am to 6.15am on Sundays and evenings on Monday and Friday, with Sunday preaching once per month in the afternoon.

No sound amplification will be permitted and the building will not be available for public hire or bookings.

Before the site is developed the applicant must also provide evidence that a risk assessment statement has been issued in accordance with the EPA that an environment audit is not required.

The church has been operating in Kyneton since before 1955 and has three other churches in residential areas around the town. The main hall is located in Ebden Street and is typically used for large gatherings.

Green light for dog breeding A dog breeding facility has been approved for Woodend North despite eight objections and some reservations from Macedon Ranges councillors.

The permit was granted for the farming property at 64 Boundary Road earlier this month with extensive conditions.

Councillors weighed up the impact of the proposal on amenity of the area, degradation of environment, and appropriateness in the Farm Zone.

While dog breeding is an accepted use in the Farm Zone, Cr Anne Moore raised concern about noise and land use ability.

“My concerns primarily are that the development of this site is going to remove the agricultural base again from the shire,” she said.

“Given the inexperience of the person wanting this application, again, my concerns are that they could turn around in three years’ time and the contamination is there for that land never to be returned back to its original use.”

But council officers had recommended approval against the planning scheme and received the majority support.

Cr Janet Pearce pointed out the land was also being used for other agricultural uses.

“The dog breeding area will be built to compliance, it is just a part of other agriculture on the site,” she said.

Cr Bill West said he was comfortable with improvements to the application and conditions imposed including limitations on dogs and noise.

In the past few days the crew at Mount Alexander Animal Welfare's Castlemaine animal shelter have received more than 6000 good reasons to pause and celebrate.

Danielle Cuskelly and Lis Templeton of ASQ Garden and Landscape last week dropped by, shouldering a cheque for $6560 and the pleasant task of presenting it to the local animal shelter.

The donated dollars are the result of ASQ's Community Rewards Program, under which VIP customers across all of ASQ's local retail outlets are able to nominate a good community cause to receive a portion of proceeds from their purchases.

"It's always such a fun job to be able to give back to the community," Danielle said as she and Lis handed over the cheque to MAAW's Castlemaine shelter manager Rosie Skinner.

The cheque presentation to MAAW was among several they made as part of the Community Rewards Program last week, with others going to Harcourt CFA, Harcourt Valley Primary School, Campbells Creek Primary School and the Mount Alexander Respite Group.

Rosie says the dollars that have been presented to MAAW will go towards ongoing improvements and operations of the Castlemaine shelter, which plays a vital role in rehoming homeless domestic animals in Mount Alexander Shire.

"We're very, very grateful that the community has thought of us and ASQ customers have nominated us," Rosie said.

"We're planning on using the money in some of upgrades here at the shelter."

Lisa Dennis In the wake of COP26 in Glasgow, Castlemaine Documentary Film Festival's latest pop-up offering, The Magnitude of All Things, couldn't be more timely.

The latest offering by award-winning Canadian filmmaker Jennifer Abbott was launched at Sydney Film Festival last week and will enjoy its Victorian premiere at Castlemaine's Theatre Royal on December 1.

When Jennifer Abbott lost her sister to cancer, her sorrow opened her up to the profound gravity of climate breakdown.

Abbott’s new documentary draws intimate parallels between the experiences of grief – both personal and planetary. Stories from the frontlines of climate change merge with recollections from the filmmaker’s childhood on Ontario’s Georgian Bay. What do these stories have in common?

The answer, surprisingly, is everything.

This cinematic journey by the Sundance award-winning director (The Corporation) takes us around the world to witness a planet in crisis: from Australia’s catastrophic fires and dying Great Barrier Reef, to the island nation of Kiribati, drowned by rising sea levels. In Nunatsiavut, melting ice permanently alters the landscape, while in the Amazon rainforest, Indigenous people fight a desperate battle against oil and mining extraction. Featuring activists, scientists and traditional custodians from Australia and beyond.

The project also has a Castlemaine connection with talented local composer and multi-instrumentalist Rob Law creating the incredible score for the moving film

which has already collected numerous awards across the globe.

Rob is passionate about climate change himself having worked on projects around the topic for some 20 years and also being the CEO of the Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance.

Rob said that while the film tackles the challenging topics of cancer and climate grief it is also uplifting in its own way.

"The word many people have used after watching it is 'cathartic'," he said.

The composer said the film also features the voice of the Theatre Royal's own Felicity Cripps.

"I asked Felicity to sing on some of the tracks," he said.

Rob recorded the score at the Alec Bennett's 'Sound Recordings' studio at Campbells Creek.

"All told I created about 50 pieces of music for the documentary, 25 of which feature in the final film," he said.

Rob will be among the panel to feature in a Q&A moderated by Jodi Newcombe following the December 1 screening, along with Dr Susie Burke and Ira Barker.

Newcombe is a local environmental economist, creative producer and strategic designer focused on facilitating a cultural shift towards environmental stewardship through cross-disciplinary partnerships and initiatives. Jodi is also a co-founder of Castlemaine Institute, a local knowledge hub for regional, regenerative futures and played an important role supporting the shire in declaring a climate emergency.

The Paddock eco village is now forging ahead following COVID delays.

Stage two will be completed by the end of this month and stage three is not far behind. The developers, Neil and Heather Barrett, are now finalising arrangements for stage four, which will consist of 12 houses to be built in 2022.

"The past 18 months have not been easy as COVID has caused very costly delays, but we’re pretty much over it now and things are looking very bright," Neil said.

"It’s been great to see the landscaping get under way again including the large in-

ground wicking beds, the terraces and the large chook run.

"Visitors continue to be impressed by the fact that The Paddock actually produces more energy than it uses and will continue to do so for the whole of its life."

Mr Barrett said this not only meant that energy costs were very low but the project was, in its own small way, actually cutting global emissions rather than raising them.

"One reason for this is that the houses are highly energy efficient with ratings for stage four expected to be a very high 8.5 stars, compared with the Victorian require-

ment of six stars for new houses and an average of 1.8 for all houses, new and old," he said.

"Another reason of course is that houses have 4.2kW of solar on their roofs.

"Another feature that attracts attention is that the running costs are very low, in the hundreds not thousands of dollars.

"This is due mainly to income from the highly popular B&B which has been incorporated into the Community Centre."

Bank’s brigade boost Lancefield and Romsey branches of the Bendigo Bank have announced the recipients of a total of nearly $160,000 in grants, sponsorships and scholarships under round one of the 2021-22 Community Investment Program.

The donations range from $32,000 to the Lions Club of Lancefield Romsey for the upgrade of the local skate park to $1000 grants to a number of the district's CFA brigades. A total of eight brigades benefited from an emergency services grant including Newham, which was recently visited from representatives from the bank to make the grant handover official.

Newham CFA Captain Steve Flounders said donations were always most welcome especially at a time when every CFA brigade had had its opportunities to fundraise at various local events severely cut back because of COVID. "The Bendigo Bank is well known for its standout generosity to the community and we were glad to have the folk from the bank at Newham to personally thank them for our grant," Capt Flounders said.

"The brigade's management team has several projects in mind that will greatly benefit from the Bendigo Bank's generosity and a decision will be made once COVID restrictions allow a meeting to be held."

"My liberties have been greatly limited while I am seeking medical advice and help, which is heartbreaking," he said.

"Many of my peers, friends and family feel for me and they agree that medical apartheid isn’t the answer."

Dr Peter Sloane, director of medical services at Central Highlands Rural Health, said he understood "the anxiety is real but on balance, vaccinating is the right thing to do".

"What we can do in cases like (Mr Frederick's) is send him to an advanced vaccine clinic in Bendigo where they can can give him some pre-medication to damp down any chance of allergic reaction," Dr Sloane said.

"The chances of him having an adverse reaction to Pfizer, other than a sore arm, are very low, but the chance of him getting sick from COVID are quite high.

"There are about 1000 new cases a day across Victoria, and in Macedon Ranges we've had about 10 cases a day for the last month, but it now looks like it's dropping away.

"When you get the high vaccination, the spread drops away. We could get lucky and see it disappear or we could see a resurgence between now and Christmas."

Teacher Josh Frederick wants to get back to class with his year five/six students as soon as possible.

But the unvaccinated Kyneton Primary staffer has been forced to take extended leave due to the state's COVID-19 vaccine mandate for essential workers.

Mr Frederick is not an 'anti-vaxxer', but he is 'vaccine hesitant' after having had adverse reactions to vaccines before.

The 46-year-old said he was willing to undergo daily COVID testing in order to continue to work.

"There's 20,000 plus teachers that are in the same position as me, between Victoria and New South Wales, I'm not alone," he said.

"I just want to get back to work and teach my kids."

Mr Frederick wants to wait until the more traditional Novavax vaccine, which he believes will be less likely to result in a reaction, becomes available in Australia.

"The mRNA ones are the ones that seem to be causing all of the reactions ... my friend's brother last week had 48 hours of paralysis – a 38-year-old man," he said.

"My nurse friend says pericarditis and myocarditis in men aged between 18 and 55 has doubled and they're saying that

Bird Blitz results in rare findings

Macedon Ranges Bird Blitz in late October saw more than 60 volunteers participate across 84 sites with notable findings.

For the first time, a pair of nesting bassian thrush were recorded on Mount Macedon.

A rare, all-white (leucistic) grey currawong was spotted in Lancefield, and satin flycatchers were detected at several sites with few official records of this species before the surveys.

A brown quail was also recorded at Mount Gisborne with only seven official records of this species in the shire.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council officers will now collate the data, upload it to the Victorian Biodiversity Atlas, and produce a short report on the findings comparing the surveys of the past three years.

Hepburn Council is hosting a walk in Trentham as part of 16 days of Activism against Gender-based Violence.

The walk will begin at the library at 10.30am on November 25, which is International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

This is the first day of the international 16 day campaign, which runs until December 10.

The council is using the walk as an opportunity to raise awareness about the key role that gender inequality plays in driving violence against women, and call for action to prevent it.

The gentle walk will be manageable for people of all levels of fitness and all abilities.

Walkers are encouraged to wear a piece of orange clothing to help highlight the campaign.

The library will also have activities from 10am before the walk, and will feature a display throughout the 16 days.

Notable sightings at that time included five threatened species, the first official record of brush-bronzewing pigeons, and the occurrence of unusual visitors such as the nankeen night heron and scarlet honeyeaters.

The inaugural Bird Blitz was in 2019 with a survey of 79 sites across the shire, recording 2769 new observations and a total of 97 different species.

Five of the bird species were listed as threatened including white-bellied sea eagle, pied cormorant, hardhead duck, brown treecreeper and black-chinned honeyeaters. Other interesting discoveries included white-winged trillers – a rare visitor to the region – in large numbers across multiple sites around Kyneton and an unusual observation of a western gerygone was recorded in Barringo.

The Junior School Showcase at Sacred Heart College is an opportunity for students to present their work to their families and broader community. In the Junior School (Years 7-9) each year level completes a project-based task. This task assists students in learning time management, resilience and independence, as well as creative and critical thinking skills.

Start of Year Reflection “Sacred Heart is an allround wonderful place. If you are into schoolwork, the library is simply amazing and the staff are outstanding. If you’d prefer sport, the ovals are huge and there is heaps of space to run around.”

In Year 7, students present a project which looks at experiences from their first year of secondary school, focusing on their own personal learning journey, with a particular emphasis on wellbeing.

In Year 8, students complete their ‘Making a Difference’ (MAD) project, where they are able to pick from a variety of global issues. Past issues have included topics such as social injustice, discrimination, mental health awareness and climate change. The MAD project is an action-research task with an ‘action’ being a required outcome.

Finally, in Year 9 students complete their EXPO learning task.

This is an opportunity for students to identify something they are really interested in and develop a project around this, resulting in action or a physical outcome, which they are able to display with pride in a public exhibition.

Once again, our Showcase event has been affected by Covid, but thanks to our flexible teaching staff and the technical expertise of two Year 10 students, Nic Hanna and William Shaddock, we have managed to showcase all Year 8 and 9 students’ work on a specially built website. The Showcase was launched via livestream on 11 November, including interviews and culminating with the unveiling of the website.

Year 7 students will present their work slightly differently, taking home a self and parent evaluation to be completed at the conclusion of their project.

Sacred Heart values the importance of these types of learning tasks, and the growth of students’ confidence and skills is an invaluable outcome clearly displayed by all involved.

What are the 16 days of activism?

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25) is recognised all over the world.

This year is its 21st observance. It is joined on December 10 by Human Rights Day. In between are the 16 days of activism, which has become a time for governments, international organisations and non-governmental organisations to raise community awareness about violence against women. The United Nations uses orange as the colour for the elimination of violence and the theme for this year is 'Orange the world'.

The Zonta club of Kyneton is one of a number of organisations that contribute to the 16 days of activism and this year the club is asking the community 'What would you do if ... someone confided in you they been harassed, assaulted, abused, coercively controlled or raped?'

"This year we invite our community to consider how to be a bystander if they were put in that situation by a family member, friend or colleague," Zonta Kyneton's advocacy committee chair Christine Jessup said.

"The bystander position is an interesting one. Sally Brooks (ABC) reported a story shared through the Victorian Women’s Trust (November 19) about a woman who disclosed domestic violence to her manager in a work context and was advised to attend a personal growth course.

"Such advice may have been intended to assist but was not helpful.

"So, what are the kinds of things bystanders can do that may assist someone living with violence who discloses their situation?

"The bystander is a person who stands by someone suffering from violence. It requires no specialist knowledge except the willingness to be informed about what kind of anti-violence services are available and the compassion to listen."

Locally, the Orange Door Network has launched outposts to make it easier for those suffering from violence to get the support they need.

The Orange Door Network in Loddon provides integrated family violence and child wellbeing support to families

across the region and provides multiple ways to access coordinated help and support. Local residents seeking support can contact the Loddon Orange Door Network by phone, email or in person.

During public health restrictions face-to-face support is still available in Bendigo and Maryborough and the network's outposts in Loddon Shire and Macedon Ranges for families in crisis who are urged to call ahead.

The implementation of The Orange Door in Loddon has been the result of a strong collaboration between Family Safety Victoria, the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing including Child Protection, Victoria Police and partner agencies – Anglicare Victoria, Bendigo and District Aboriginal Co-operative, Centre for Non-Violence and Njernda Aboriginal Corporation.

What would you do if ...?

The following narratives are plausible but hypothetical. They are to be read as an example of a possible situation.

Agencies/professionals who have kindly agreed to be interviewed are doing so in relation to the information presented here. The purpose is to give readers some understanding of what support or actions different agencies can offer that can inform your bystander actions. These narratives offer information, not case-specific advice. The Midland Express is publishing two hypotheticals this week and two next week.

Hypothetical One: Sexual Harassment A is a student at a tertiary college in Melbourne. Her family, concerned about the long hours on public transport, have financially supported her move into student accommodation. A seeks help for an assignment from her friendly tutor B. After her next class B asks her about her work and offers to meet for coffee. A is flattered with this attention.

Coffee becomes a regular event. However, A becomes wary when after a few meetings B puts his arm around her as they walk back to college after having coffee. This action escalates to B sending email messages (obtaining her email from student records) about his attraction to her, seeking times to be alone with her, and sending her photographs of himself which finally become overtly graphic with sexually explicit messages. A has stopped attending classes. She moves home….

Hypothetical Two: Sexual Assault C is a thirteen-year-old girl. She lives at home with her mother and father in the shire and commutes to school via the school bus, which is driven by a member of the church C and her family attend. After a fall getting onto the bus, C has become the focus of care and concern by the bus driver who had initially triaged her gashed shin. He deliberately builds up a 'jokey' rapport with her over a period of months. The bus driver also transports the children at C’s church to their yearly youth camps. He is trusted by the

church administration and has helped out at the camps with activities over a number of years. He takes the students on torchlight walks through the forest. He runs campfire evenings where they tell stories and play games. At C’s camp on one of these walks, the bus driver manages to get C away from the group in a game of torch-lit hide and seek.

He sexually assaults her while they are separated from the main group. He tells her she can’t tell anybody because she will get into trouble. C is very quiet the next day and cannot look her assailant in the face. When her parents pick her up at the church, she is quite withdrawn. She will not say what is wrong.

The bystander as listener and believer The 16 days of activism is a time to think about those around us who are suffering from any kind of violence – be it at home, at work or in the community – and to consider how to be an active bystander.

Zonta Kyneton's Christine Jessup asked Reverend Melissa Clark from the Anglican Parish of Woodend about family violence and abuse to understand how bystanders can be there for those they care about or those who confide in them about their experiences.

"In my work I listen to community members who may need comfort for any number of personal issues of grief, loss, fear, uncertainty, illness, hurt or the need for guidance," Mel said.

"When people are struggling, they often need a script; a mindset about what could be called therapeutic listening.

"The idea of tribe works in our village.

"To be a healthy tribe when there is hurt and suffering we need to listen, to witness what another person is saying; to believe what they say, to thank them for trusting enough to tell their story, and then from a position of support ask 'what can I do?'"

Those living with violence in their lives present the challenge to the rest of us to be available and willing to help.

At a practical level this means being willing to know something about the support available to survivors of violence.

"People in distress, when asked what they need, often say they don’t know," Mel said.

"This provides a starting point for a conversation.

"Being a bystander means 'standing by' someone in need.

"The journey to recovery starts with throwing love at it."

Mel offers us the opportunity to understand adversity as a time to share our basic humanity with those suffering from violence and abuse.

A question that has arisen in recent weeks from the Black Forest Drive correspondence is what exactly does Regional Roads Victoria plan for the Woodend area community?

There is nothing specific on the Regional Roads Victoria website. It merely reveals RRV is “proceeding to finalise project plans and detailed designs in late 2021”.

The website refers to a survey which closed on October 21. RRV promises to share the survey results as well as feedback from a webinar on October 5. However David Reed has commented (Opinions, November 9) that the survey made no allowance for negative comments.

Institutions like Regional Roads and its larger counterpart, Major Road Projects Victoria, are formidable opponents. Institutional control and denial are in their DNA. Residents should telephone or email RRV, as well as the local member MaryAnne Thomas MP, who seems to support the project, to ask for those results to be placed on the RRV website NOW, together with road section plans to specify what is proposed to be done and where, so we can be informed. At the moment, we are like mushrooms in the dark.

A 2010 campaign to retain the Kyneton Mechanics Institute for community use and protect it from commercialisation by the council required sustained action over a 12-month period by a small group. Likewise a 1990 campaign to overturn the Kyneton Council’s plan to convert the shire hall into commercial offices required a concerted effort. It succeeded after several hundred individuals contributed to a full-page advertisement in this newspaper, the sale of colourful t-shirts to question the council’s motives and the voicing of concerns at a council meeting. Sadly, obdurate councils are easier to influence than state institutions.

Do individuals who use or are impacted

by Black Forest Drive have the interest and dedication to do more that write letters to oppose the RRV proposal? If so, a public meeting should be called in Woodend, well before the Christmas break, to formulate a plan of protest action. I shall be happy to attend.

We are approaching the 16 days of activism, so let us reflect on the past year and what has transpired.

Sadly, the pandemic has escalated domestic violence to even higher levels, for a variety of reasons. I see this in my own work but ask any Victoria Police member for verification.

This rise in DV could have been foreseen, so what was the state government response? Much rhetoric, no additional services, outsourced support, 1800 numbers not responding and tragically more young women taken from us.

For men, incredulously, the advice was for ‘men in crisis’ to call a helpline before they commit DV. Anyone involved in this space and especially women – despite the serious circumstances – understood the absurdity of such a mandate. Or were not surprised.

Easy to look down from the ivory tower that is Parliament House, especially if you’re never worked in the frontline space, or even worked.

Meanwhile, hard-pressed frontline responders in this space – especially police, courts and social workers – were doing everything in their powers to provide support to women in desperate need. Your work and commitment is noted by a grateful community.

But 2021 also saw the rise and rise of grassroots support for activism in the DV space. The groups involved here (yes Kyneton Zonta ladies!), schools and impor-

tantly the efforts of everyday women and men. They are seeking and making a huge, long-term shift in societal attitudes towards gender-based violence. The year 2022 is your year.

ing environmental, cultural and landscape values, then presumably any change in farming practices in RCZ’s would be wholeheartedly supported by MRSC. As this example demonstrates, perhaps the only obstacle to farming in RCZ’s are farmers’ imaginations. For this reason the change from FZ to RCZ should be welcomed for the obvious freedoms it will provide and the new opportunities it will present to landowners. If in doubt people, look to Ashbourne.

Strong advocacy Russell S Mowatt, Calder Action Group As a former councillor on Macedon Ranges Shire Council, I welcome the recent opening of the new Station and Saunders Road intersection in New Gisborne.

This has been a momentous occasion given the long and protracted efforts of council, state government, Regional Roads Victoria, Gisborne Roads and Transport Group and the local community.

I’m sure the late Bruce Overall, former president of the Gisborne Roads and Transport Group, would be grinning from ear to ear with this recent outcome.

The state government through the strong advocacy of local MP Mary-Anne Thomas has listened to the tune of $11.7M. In essence this will improve traffic flow and safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to support the local economy and population growth of the Gisborne area.

I await with interest the next project and upgrade of the Kilmore and Melbourne Roads intersection and the benefits this will bring to the wider community.

A final comment from Dr E F Schumacher, author of Small is Beautiful: A Study of Economics as if People Mattered, published in 1973; “The Buddhist economist would insist that a population basing its economic life on non-renewable fuels is living parasitically on CAPITAL instead of INCOME.”

Marcus Smith, Ashbourne I note there has been considerable concern in the community regarding the changes detailed in the Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s Draft Rural Land Use Strategy.

I would like to reassure farmers who are worried about the possible restrictions that could come from rezoning their properties from Farming Zone to Rural Conservation Zone.

If the spoken assurances of MRSC officers are not convincing enough (heaven knows why they wouldn’t be), a drive past the property on Ashbourne Road beyond Flanagans Road should quell any anxiety that farmers may have about the impact of zoning changes.

Since the storm in June, the property at 1041 Ashbourne Road has become the dumping site for all the debris removed by contractors as part of the MRSC ‘cleanup’. It is an industrial-scale processing enterprise with no pre-existing use rights established on private property that has environmental significance, significant landscape and vegetation protection overlays.

Moreover, noise pollution, massive increase in truck movements, extensive damage to roads, wastewater runoff, among other negative impacts on the amenity of Ashbourne/Fern Hill are obviously compatible with RCZ values as MRSC granted approval.

If an industrial-scale non-farming enterprise on farmland aligns with MRSC’s vision of preserving the existing forest mosaic, enhancing biodiversity and maintain-

Schools urged to make a splash

North Central Catchment Management Authority is on the lookout for passionate groups and schools keen to engage the next River Detectives recruits.

The River Detectives program is a free and fun education initiative that connects young people to nature by caring for their local waterway.

Students learn how water, land, plants, animals, people, and communities are linked through monthly water testing and schools are provided with equipment, support, training and teaching resources.

North Central CMA Citizen Science coordinator Tania MacLeod said River Detectives was fun, healthy and a great way to learn, and could be tailored to specific learning objectives and remote schooling.

“It enables students to gain an intimate knowledge and love for their local waterway through a variety of hands-on activities, including regular water-quality testing, water-bug sampling and habitat surveys,” she said.

“River Detectives aligns with the Australian curriculum framework, offering crosscurricular activities to promote understanding of waterways as integral features of a healthy ecosystem and healthy community.

“Students develop skills in monitoring and enhancing riparian habitats and are

encouraged to become custodians of their local waterway.”

Ms MacLeod is encouraging new schools and youth groups in our catchment to register for the 2022 River Detectives Program.

“We’re especially keen to find new schools near Bendigo Creek, the Campaspe and Coliban rivers, and the Gunbower and lower Loddon River areas,” she said.

“These waterways align with some key projects and priority areas over the next few years, and data collected by schools or groups will feed directly into them.

“If you’re a teacher, a parent or a community member with a passion for your local waterway and environment, you’re invited to get involved.”

The program can be adapted to meet the needs of schools, students and facilitators and training and equipment is provided.

“What better way is there to inspire children to protect their environment than by giving them hands-on experiences,” Ms MacLeod said.

Help to stay at home Those considering a government-funded Home Care Package for themselves or someone they know have the opportunity to meet Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health’s new local team at Kyneton next Monday.

For those eligible, a Home Care Package can enable someone to stay living at home rather than going into aged care.

The financial package can be used for a number of supports including the purchase of home modifications such as ramps and rails and equipment to help with daily living.

It can also fund activity and social groups in the community as well as practical help at home with things such as gardening and housework.

“I am passionate about supporting people

to remain living safely and independently at home,” says Cassandra Eklom, one of the care managers at Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health.

“I can work with people to help them identify what types of support would help them to remain in their home and assist them in mapping out their goals and their needs.”

Those interested in finding out more about Home Care Packages can attend an information session either in person at 1 Caroline Chisholm Drive Kyneton or via live video stream.

Working bee at Tylden

The Tylden Cemetery Trust is having a working bee on Sunday November 28 from 9.30am to clean up after the recent storm events.

The cemetery is in need of some help with only four dedicated trust members unable to get it back to looking its best.

People will need to bring rakes, lawn mowers, chainsaws, trailer to take away the wood and muscle power.

Junior Tigers moulding future of the club

As the final celebrations are completed for 2021, the Kyneton Football Netball Club is looking to prepare for 2022.

Newly appointed Under 18s coach Rhys Magin wasted no time welcoming the top age players into the Senior Club at their presentation night.

KFNC has 19 quality players that are eligible to play at the senior level next year, a significant increase from this year.

Magin attended the presentation night and spoke to the players on the expectations from the senior leadership group and the importance of pre-season preparation.

Daniel Murray, junior football director, said the club encouraged each player to develop to their full potential, through its quality coaching staff and strong club values.

"We are committed to making sure that each player will love being part of the culture of this amazing club from juniors, through to a senior level," he said.

"Our club has teams from Under 10 and Under 12s mixed, Under 14 and Under 16 Boys, Under 14 and Under 16 Girls, with the hope of expanding participation in coming years."

KFNC is currently looking for members to join the juniors for 2022. GOLF results Dalhousie Dalhousie District Golf Association held its annual meeting earlier this month.

Golf Australia’s golf development senior manager, Mark Bamford, was the guest speaker, and he provided an insight into the DDGA’s recent strategy review.

Sue McCall stepped down after six years at the helm as association president, and Mary Campbell, well known across Dalhousie, was elected to the presidency.

Vice-president is Jon Blackwell (Hidden Valley), with Elaine Scanlon (Romsey) continuing as secretary, with Rod Campbell elected as treasurer.

Kyneton New incoming captains Joan Gibbs (handicap 26) and Mat Hodgkiss (10) carded plus 5 to win the HB Stewart mixed four-ball best-ball par event on Saturday.

Robyn McCrae and Damian Summers were runners-up on +4, on a countback from Pat Clohesy and Vicki Nettleton.

Long-time members Barry Murphy (14) and Col Cooney (23) took out the men’s event with +6, on a countback from Neil Watts and Tien Ho. Nearest the pins were Paul Law (2), Ho, Julie Harris, Gibbs, Carl Morris and Noel Alldis (also super pin).

Reminder: Friday night’s twilight ninehole hit off is between 4pm and 5.30pm.

Grace Parkinson emerged as the medal of medalists women’s winner on Wednesday with a round of 104-28-76.

The second round of the championships and Ruth Sievers Trophy also took place.

A-grade: Lois Scott 94-23-71, from Deb Kohlman 100-24-76. B – Joan Gibbs 10027-73, with Parkinson runner-up. NTPs to NTPs to Kohlman and MacRae. Ross Martin blitzed the field with 7715-62 in the first round of the midweek championship on Wednesday. Mat Hodgkiss 79-11-68 was next best, with Maxine Martin NTP. Lancefield Pre-post favourite Trevor Lambert opened up a five-stroke lead in the first round of the Lancefield championships on Saturday.

An excellent field turned out, but some anticipated good scores did not eventuate.

Mount Macedon Following a successful Cup Day par 3 ambrose competition won by the Fairley/A Fraser pairing from runners up Ward/ Hohmann, it was back to 'regular' Wednesday golf for the Michelle Edwards-MTA Travel November Mug o' the Month, which was won by Peter Sinclair with 37 points.

Mount Macedon Golf Club’s Open Champion Patrick Doyle flanked by A-grade nett winner, Trevor Atkins and overall nett winner, Darcy Doyle.

Open Champion returning a gross 102, which included an eagle two, Darcy Doyle was the 27-hole nett winner with 99, while Trevor Atkins took out the A-grade (nett 102) and Tony Carter B-grade (nett 104).

More great news from the club's friends at the Victorian Golf Foundation who have granted the sum of $1000 to be put towards the club's ever-expanding 'Ladies Get Into Golf@MMGC'. This program has seen 60 participants involved since the beginning of September allowing them access to the course and the FREE use of new sets of ladies' clubs both during the skills session Sundays and throughout the week, in order to build on their enthusiasm and improvement.

Hynes carded 48, 48 – 96 to win by five strokes from Alex Fraser.

Players from Castlemaine, Rich River, Lancefield, Strathbogie, Romsey, Mount Macedon, Woodend and Fox Hills competed in clear, sunny conditions with the course in top shape.

In the morning round Hynes opened up a three-shot advantage with Fraser, Dennis Davenport, and Brad Klaaysen carding 51, and Andrew Clement 52.

The wind changed in the afternoon but Hynes continued on his merry way with another 48, followed by Mal Mottram 49, and Mick Squire 50.

At the presentation of trophies, club president Anthony Lakey expressed appreciation to all who had contributed to the tournament lead-up and on the day.

Many members of the Clement family were present to enjoy the day and see Andrew Clement present the Graeme Clement Perpetual Shield.

The B-grade scratch winner was Scott Williams with 110, and Klaaysen took out C-grade with 106.

The 24-hole handicap winners were Jack McDonald 96, Hugh Drummond 90 and Mitch Atlas 95.33.

Saturday was lead-up day to Sunday, with a 4BBB stableford played The winners were locals Les Gaunt (8) and Scott Williams (15) with 48 points.

Trentham It was the busiest time for ages at Trentham Golf Course on Saturday, with 111 players in competitions and another 60 green fee enthusiasts fitted in as well.

The men’s A-grade stableford winner was Victor Czapp (13) with 39 points, from Leif Louwen-Skovdam (5) on 38.

Jim Dickson (14) had 38 in B-grade, edging out John Williams on a countback.

Bob Hogan (22) took out C-grade with 39, from Patrick Ryan (29) on 36.

The doubles knockout finalists are Trevor McKeon – Jock McLeod versus Darrin McLean – Shane Robinson.

Birthday girl Trudie Ferry had good reason to celebrate a brilliant 43 points in the women’s stableford, best of the day.

She took out B-grade, and the consistent Veronica Maher was the A-grade winner with 37.

Woodend Ultra-consistent low marker Andrew Davies has scored a runaway 15-stroke victory in Woodend Golf Club’s 2021 championship.

It’s his eighth title success on his home course, and his tally of 207 for 54-holes was illustrated why he is playing from a handicap of 1.

Fine conditions with some wind greeted the field in the third and final round on Saturday.

Tony Gepp took out the B-grade championship, and Ben Thompson wrapped up

C-grade by three strokes.

Mick Fitzpatrick landed a double by capturing the seniors’ championship with 82, 84 and 87 -- 253 total, and President’s Trophy (54-hole net) in a tantalising finish.

With 203 Fitzpatrick was a shot clear of Davies, Gepp and Guy Moxley, the latter being the putting champ for 54 holes with 78 putts.

Sam Barker won the junior championship with 87, 106, 94 – 287 and w plenty of improvement ahead.

Main scores were: Championship: A. Davies 68, 69, 70 – 207, from G. Moxley 73, 77, 72 – 222.

B-grade: Tony Gepp 86, 80, 79 – 245, from Trevor Bowen, Lachlan Whitton, Murray Fraser and Mick Fitzpatrick all 245.

C-grade: Ben Thompson 91, 91, 90 – 272 from Mick Rantala 90, 92, 93 – 275.

Two new life members On Saturday evening life membership was awarded to two men described as very much the heart and soul of Woodend Golf Club.

The unanimous decision saw Andrew Davies and Mick Fitzpatrick join the club’s illustrious band of those previously given the ‘life’ tag.

Granting of the club’s highest individual award to the duo was applauded at the club’s annual meeting.

There was also a change in leadership when all positions were declared vacant.

Barney Hearnden was elected as the new president, relinquishing the role of secretary.

Andrew Davies is now vice-president, with James O’Brien secretary and Trevor Bowen treasurer.

Neville Bottams is the men’s captain, with Chris Holliday vice-captain; Loretta Matthews was elected women’s captain.

General committee members are Veronica Sullivan, Mick Fitzpatrick, Andrew Franklin and Murray Fraser.

The Woodend club expressed thanks to retiring president Paul Whelan for his great contribution in leading the club for the past seven years.

SPORTS wrap Bowls predictions fraught with peril Bill West

Three rounds down in the new look Highlands bowls pennant competition, and it’s apparent that making predictions about what may lie ahead this season is fraught with danger.

Looking back at 2020-2021, there’s been plenty of changes from that time, with some bowlers changing clubs and moving into and out of the competition. The inclusion of Kilmore and Broadford clubs from the defunct Central competition seems to be a positive so far.

Unpredictability was evident last Saturday, with promoted Trentham losing just one of three rinks at Kyneton Golf – but the Golf players still won their first match by 17 shots due to a runaway performance from Graham Edwards’ rink.

It was actually Trentham’s first completed match, after a washout and a bye.

Last season’s premiers Lancefield and runners-up Kyneton played one another with teams bearing little resemblance to the ones that fought out the grand final.

The Tigers are now on top of the ladder with three wins and are at home to fourthplaced Kilmore in the fourth round this weekend.

“We’re having fun and are not under any pressure,” Tigers’ manager Chris Jolly said after the very unexpected 43-shot all fours up victory.

The Jeff Holmes quartet led the way with a 29-shot margin, where nothing went right for a luckless opposition in a match on a good Kyneton green.

One could select a very powerful lineup from the dozen or so players missing from last season’s grand final.

Lancefield is at home to fourth-placed Kilmore this weekend, and will be happy to be the underdog.

Romsey had 30 shots to spare at Diggers Rest, although the maximum 16 points sought Kilmore a bye. proved elusive.

Big finish to Cup

While there may have been just seven runners, there as a blanket finish to the 2021 Kilmore Cup on Sunday.

Bendigo galloper Hi Stranger, ridden by Damien Thornton, swooped down the outside to clinch the $160,000 feature event run over 1600m.

The five-year-old is the stable star for Shane Fliedner, and took career earnings to $617,300 with eight wins from 34 starts.

Favourite Imperial Lad set a hot pace on a track rated as good, so much so the time for the race was just 0.6 seconds outside the track record.

Hi Stranger, a $5.50 chance in an open field, powered home late to win clearly with Imperial Lad hanging on for second.

KYNETON GALLOPERS IN FORM The Tatura meeting on Saturday was a good one for Kyneton-trained gallopers,

with Svaneke and Roger’s Day successful.

Svaneke started a short-priced favourite when she won a maiden at Kyneton a week earlier, and trainer Neil Dyer was thrilled to see “the tough little mare” win narrowly over 1980m – this time starting as a $17 chance.

Brian Higgins had the winning ride and Dyer said Svaneke had stepped up to 58 grade superbly. The George Osbornetrained Roger’s Day has always shown ability, and put his best foot forward at Tatura. Ridden by Aaron Lynch, Roger’s Day ($3.80) seized the initiative in the 1600m event and was never troubled to win by two and a half lengths from favourite Anthemic.

It was the five-year-old’s third win from 17 starts, with career earnings now approaching $80,000.

Triples champions

A Kyneton Golf trio has won the final of the Highlands area state triples qualifier.

Colin Schmidt, Toby Barker and Adrian Plowman (s) are pictured after defeating Kilmore’s Matt McMaster, John Reimann and John Coates 18-9 on the Kyneton green.

The first nine ends of the final produced just nine singles, with Kilmore leading 6-3.

Lifting the tempo, the Golf trio took control to run out comfortable winners.

Earlier, they won their semi-final 21-14 against Gisborne’s Paul O’Farrell, Peter Williams and Ethan Higgins (s).

In the other semi-final the Kilmore side won 18-17 in a ight encounter with the composite team of Glen Gascoyne, Jim Cooper and Terry Kelly (s).

The region play-off for a spot in State Champions Week takes place on Sunday, December 19.

Century sinks Woodsmen Bill West

Gisborne District Cricket Association’s season is finally under way, and Woodend’s healthy tally of 188 was not enough to keep promoted Wallan at bay in their McIntyre Cup clash on Saturday.

Spectators at Gilbert Gordon Oval witnessed some fine batting in the one-day fixture, but it was Bryan Vance who turned the match in the visitors’ favour by scoring 101 in fine style.

Earlier, Woodend’s Marcus Stewart 66 and Harry Lawson 58 put together 111 runs for the second wicket, but once they were dismissed the hopes of scoring over 200 faded.

All out for 188 gave the Magpies a target and with Vance leading the way they compiled 7/192 with overs to spare.

At Gisborne’s Gardiner Reserve the home side was restricted to 119 all out, with captain Jason Wilson top scoring with 39 and Spencer Jones making an unbeaten 27.

In a professional display, Bacchus Marsh replied with 2/122 with Nicholas Stangio unbeaten on 50 to add to his three wickets, and Cousins was 52 not out.

Romsey dictated terms to Rupertswood for much of the afternoon, with Travis Stevenson the man of the match.

The Redbacks restricted the promoted Rupertswood to 129, with Stevenson capturing 4-17, and Jamie Taylor 3-8 from eight miserly overs. Aaron Paterson and Darrin Jewell also kept the brakes on.

Stevenson dominated a vital second wicket stand with Matthew Milne and the Redbacks were well on the way to victory when he departed for a brisk 55. Coach

Ben Way made sure of victory with an unbeaten 29 as Romsey reached 7/130.

In the other McIntyre Cup fixtures Sunbury United’s 6/203c.c. was far to good for East Sunbury all out for 102, and Diggers Rest-Bulla 9/140 (R. Berry 38, R. Ratnayche 26) defeated Sunbury Kangaroos 107.

With 10 teams, McIntyre Cup will feature a ‘Final Six’ for the first time so points in early matches are vital.

THRILLER AT KYNETON In Johnstone Shield, there was an absolute thriller at the Kyneton Showgrounds, where Riddell lost five wickets in the space of 15 runs chasing Kyneton’s very handy 5/154 c.c. (S. Pyers 51 not out, T. Boyer 27, L. Crean 25).

It was left to tailenders Evan Mouat and Jarrod McKee to rescue Riddell with a last wicket unbeaten stand , the winning runs coming in the final over of the day. Sam Dempsey 43 top scored, with Ingleton, Stokes and Sheahan sharing the wickets for Kyneton, a side which has plenty of ability.

At Tony Clarke Reserve, Macedon restricted Gisborne to 7/130 (Glenn Waites 48, H. Luxmore 36 – L. Ferguson 4-14) then worked hard to reach a winning 8/131 and begin the season on a good note.

The other Johnstone Shield fixtures saw Romsey had little trouble in compiling 4/127 (D. Devlin 45) to overhaul Aintree’s 124, Sunbury United comfortably accounted for East Sunbury, and Bacchus Marsh rattled up 8/238 to outclass Eynesbury 149.

In Jensen Shield, Alan Sinclair’s unbeaten 95, Luke Harrison 34 and Callum Sankey 29 were largely responsible for Lancefield reaching 5/193 to edge out St

Malmsbury cricketers were out in force at the weekend, fielding a record four teams.

There were mixed results, with all pleased to see the season under way.

In their very first game, the Under 17 girls lined up against early flag-favourite Gisborne on Friday evening.

Some good early bowling restricted the run flow, but a few fielding errors did not help as Gisborne compiled a very good 138.

Nickola Cox and Stephanie Grant made a promising start with the run chase, but runs dried up with the bowlers on top.

Malmsbury top three batters retired, and runs were hard to come by with the innings ending with 53 on the board.

A learning curve for the girls, with a fine effort signalling improvement as the season progresses.

At the MCG on Saturday, Malmsbury found Jensen Shield opponents Bacchus Marsh too strong.

Losing both openers cheaply, the Berries recovered as Quentin Kebble scored 41, Dave Nolte 30 and Jock Brazell 20 not out in a final tally of 152.

The Marsh reached a winning 6/156, with wickets shared (JD Singh 2-17).

RUN SPREE After dismissing St Anthonys for 143 (Charlie Szabo 70, Dan Letchford 49) with seven individual wicket takers, the Berrie bats ran rampant scoring 1/146 in just 19 overs.

Justin Murphy finished on 60 not out, and Chris Ganim was caught on 64 trying to hit another six.

Malmsbury’s north grade side found the going tough at Lancefield, with the Tigers scoring 6/145 (Christian Keogh 50, Simon Donnellon 26) to finish on 6/145.

The Berries never got going, being dismissed for 63 (Steve Taukas 20 – Duane Milligan four wickets).

Gisborne 6/156 (Cameron Osmond 47) defeated Diggers Rest 8/152 with Jason Gruevski snaring the first hat-trick of the season in his 3-15.

Hanging Rock has four teams this season, including a women’s eleven, and the number one side restricted Woodend to 7/143 (Brett Gardner 71) in 40 overs, and replied with 3/147 as captain Brandon Nicholls 68 and Andrew Warne 35 were both unbeaten in a tally of 3/147.

Macedon’s Ivan Bobetic hit an unbeaten 101 and captain Todd Coppin in the division 2 match at Riddell. The home side replied with 7/151 (M. Lindsay 59, J.

Fisk 34).

Rupertswood 6/216 (Adam Sutherland 106) defeated Gisborne 7/125 (Brandon Sankey 55).

Bacchus Marsh 161 defeated Kyneton 124.

THIS WEEK The Gisborne versus Woodend match at Gardiner Reserve takes pride of place in McIntyre Cup on Saturday. Both sides will be looking to put a win on the bard.

Romsey travels to East Sunbury and should prove too strong.

Bumper week in CDCA with T20 to commence Castlemaine District Cricket Association (CDCA) senior sides battled out round two matches last Saturday. C Grade/Under 16 contested day two of round one matches.

The Women's season got underway on Friday evening with some spirited competition and Under 13 competition began on Wednesday, November 17. The CDCA's popular T20 comp also kicks off tonight.
