Local performer TimTim will be among the roving artists entertaining crowds in the Castlemaine CBD this Saturday.

Lisa Dennis This Saturday for one night only the streets of Castlemaine will come alive with seven hours of free entertainment as part of the 2021Castlemaine Fringe Festival.

There will truly be something for everyone with a Teddy Bears Picnic at Victory Park, projections on the exterior of the Market Building, a pop-up disco, a hula hoop troupe, circus performers, buskers and bands. CFF production manager Stephanie Riddel said it would be a night of sensory pleasure where people could wander around the CBD and discover art and performance on every corner.

"When we first started planning the festival we didn't even know if it would be able to go ahead, we focused on planning lots of events outdoors and our 'Art Window Trail' in the windows of local businesses. However, with restrictions easing we have been able to keep adding more events to the program and what we have planned

for Saturday will be really special," she said.

"Mostyn Street will be closed to traffic and entertainment will be focused around four stages. On the main stage on the steps of Castlemaine's Historic Market Building Louise Terra will headline as well as Gospel in the Maine, The Omega Point, Lady Fun Times and Sons of the Blues and Jim Coad's projections will provide a backdrop featuring art works created as part of the CFF colouring competition.

"In Victory Park events will kick off with the Teddy Bears Picnic followed by entertainment by new local female group Park Lunch and Thompson's Foundry Band and later DJ tunes on the Kracken Submarine art car stage which has to be seen to be believed!

"A short distance away in the carpark in Frederick Street you will discover the 'Wham Bam Stage' and can take the opportunity to enjoy Social Dis-Dancing, the Meet-Market Disco and dress up at the 'Wrong Town Boutique' - a free costume popup shop where you can

create an outfit and strut your stuff on the catwalk!"

Just a little stroll away on Forest Street you'll find the 'Comma Stage' tucked in behind Bruce's Kitchen where you can enjoy live entertainment by a range of artists including up and coming new star Nadia Phillips.

"There will also be roving performers and of course while your wandering the streets you can take in all the fabulous art of the Art Window Trail," Steph said.

"Many of our fantastic local eateries will be staying open late for the evening so you can drop in a grab a bite to enjoy as you take in the festivities.

"Last year was a really tough year for everyone. We wanted to create an event that will 'Re-Active' the arts in our town and also our amazing local businesses.

Fun and fundraising Staff at Gisborne's Williamson’s Foodworks will hand over their day’s wages and all profits made at the store on April 2 to the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

It’s been a store tradition for more than eight years and could see as much as $30,000 raised for RCH with a morning of family fun and entertainment planned.

Fresh operations manager Brayden Rodgers said the team aimed to top previous store totals to make up for last year’s COVID-19 challenge.

“We’re hoping to reach the $30,000 mark this year – or go beyond that - as we had to cancel last year’s event due the pandemic,” he said.

Staff have planned plenty of activities to enjoy with face painting, free giveaways, raffles, competitions, food tastings and a special visit from the Easter Bunny.

People are encouraged to add to the store’s total donation through their shopping experience or by making their own donation on site.

The supermarket will be open Friday April 2 from 9am to 1pm.

Fire danger period comes to a close

The Fire Danger Period for the Macedon Ranges ended yesterday and will end at 1am next Monday for Mount Alexander Shire.

CFA acting assistant chief fire officer Mick Hembrow said that with milder weather, cooler nights and a return of green to many paddocks, the timing was right to remove the fire restrictions across the district.

“We still want people to act safely, when and if they decide to burn and we are encouraging people to now clean up around their properties before winter” he said.

Mr Hembrow emphasised that while the FDP was coming to an end in some areas, it was still important to remain vigilant.

“We’re urging everyone to stay safe, whether you’re living in or travelling to high bushfire risk areas,” he said.

“Please monitor the conditions on hot, dry and windy

days, as we may still see some days of elevated fire risk.”

While the Fire Danger Period will come to an end, it is still important that residents check the local conditions are safe for any burn-off they are considering undertaking.

“You must register your burn-offs, check weather conditions and follow local council laws and regulations,” Mr Hembrow said.

“Registering your burn-off ensures that if somebody reports smoke, the incident will be cross-checked with the burn-off register, which will then prevent CFA crews wasting resources and showing up at your door.”

Landowners can now register their burn-off online at www.firepermits.vic.gov.au.

When conducting burn-offs, remain alert and always have resources on hand to extinguish the fire.

A crowdfunding campaign has raised more than $50,000 for a local family in crisis.

Castlemaine resident and founder of Trentham’s famous RedBeard Historic Bakery John Reid was diagnosed with brain cancer in February, placing enormous stress on his wife Thaïs Sansom and their three sons. A friend’s initiative and community generosity has brought some welcome relief.

Local teacher Joseph Bromley has worked with Ms Sansom for more than a decade. Close friends, they teach performing arts in schools and have collaborated in many performances.

Mr Bromley set up an online GoFundMe campaign, ‘Some bread for Thaïs and John’, with the goal of raising $25,000.

He said the communities of Mount Alexander Shire, Hepburn and the Macedon Ranges had been rocked by the news of John’s illness and rallied to show their support for the family.

"Thaïs and John have been immensely generous to our community over many years," Mr Bromley said.

"I knew their friends and well-wishers would want to give back with some practical support at this difficult time. I’m delighted by the response, which smashed my goal and shows how beloved this family is."

Mr Reid co-founded RedBeard with his brother in 2005 to bake authentic sourdough breads and pastries in a historic wood-fired oven in the heart of Trentham.

The business grew rapidly and now employs more than 20 locals. A regional icon and major destination, RedBeard has won several awards for sustainability, a National Baking Industry Award for Excellence and an RACV Tourism Award.

When Theo was born last year, Samantha Moore realised her family had joined other Ranges families that had a fight on their hands.

Theo was born with bilateral renal cystic dysplasia and requires regular visits to The Royal Children's Hospital from Woodend to manage his kidney condition in the lead up to his kidney transplant at about age three or four.

Over the years, Samantha has been the vessel for mums from all over the Ranges to confide in and she has learnt that there is a recurring theme among parents of sick children.

On social media, parents celebrate healthy babies' first steps and munching first toasts while parents of sick children often sit mute, knowing that their child may never reach those goals. One mum explained it as "being in black and white and watching everyone else move around in colour".

“When it feels that everyone is celebrating the norms in life, these amazing parents are celebrating nights without feeding tube accidents, clear blood tests and running up kilometres, taking trips to specialists,” Samantha said.

“These parents are our neighbours, our friends. They are the families that can’t turn up to play dates and are hyper vigilant of colds and sniffles. These are the families that need our support. There are a lot of sick children and I really feel for those parents that are going through things privately."

As part of this year's Good Friday Appeal, Samantha has organised a spectacular local raffle with entry through donations made to the 'Theo Tullio virtual tin shake'.

From golf lessons, hotel and beauty vouchers to bespoke pottery, the raffle has a huge prize pool with many local businesses coming on board to offer contributions in support.

Samantha's original goal was to raise $2000 but she met this target within the first 48 hours and within two weeks she had met her next target of $4000.

“I was absolutely blown away. The support of the community was incredible,” she said.

Eve Lamb Multiple gas leaks within a block of each other in Castlemaine CBD in recent days are the subject of an investigation aimed at identifying the cause.

CFA units from Castlemaine and Campbells Creek attended following reports of a gas leak shortly after 8am on Thursday morning at the old fire station building - now operating as a cafe - in Templeton Street.

While the cafe was able to quickly return to normal operations, investigators were still in the area attempting to establish a possible cause when another possible gas leak was reported about two hours later at a childcare provider in Templeton Street.

Both had followed the temporary evacuation of the Castlemaine library

- situated within a block of the other two locations - six days earlier due to a detected gas leak there as well.

Castlemaine CFA captain Terry Franklin and Castlemaine communications officer Ron Gartside said it was possible the gas leaks might be related to each other with contractor firm Downer investigating.

"Downer are testing the whole area to determine the cause and whether they're connected or not," Mr Franklin said.

"We won't know whether they're connected or not until they've done their full investigation."

Mr Gartside said it was understood that the three sites where the leaks had been detected were on the same gas line.

Mr Franklin took the opportunity to warn people also about conducting illegal burn-offs after the local CFA and police

attended two illegal, unregistered burnoffs in Castlemaine over the past week.

"They were at properties in Duke Street and Ross Drive over the last week," Mr Franklin said.

"CFA and police have attended and people can be prosecuted.

"Fire restrictions are still in force so anyone wanting to carry out a burn-off must get a permit.

"Police will attend if they haven't obtained a permit or called the burn notification line prior to conducting a burn."

The Fire Danger Period for Mount Alexander Shire ends at 1am on March 29.

Agriculture Victoria has trained 22 new authorised officers and inspectors to respond to biosecurity and animal welfare threats.

Of the 22 staff, nine are based in south-west Victoria, five in northern Victoria, six in south-east Victoria, and two staff in state-wide roles.

Responsibilities of authorised officers and inspectors include working with livestock owners and landholders to manage weeds and pest animals, tag livestock, and inspect saleyards.

News Patience please Vaccine calls swamp GP clinics

GP Clinics in central Victoria are preparing for a dramatic increase in appointments as the COVID-19 vaccination program rolls out across the country.

With vaccinations already underway for the 1A priority group, the next phase of vaccinations will focus on the 1B group.

This group includes people over 70, healthcare workers, Indigenous adults, adults with specified medical conditions and a range of critical workers including defence, police, fire and emergency workers and meat processors.

While local GP clinics are yet to receive any COVID-19 vaccine, or have received a very limited amount of vaccine, they are already being overwhelmed with enquiries from patients trying to book appointments, a spokesperson at Castlemaine Health told the Midland Express on Friday.

The community is now being urged to be patient, refrain from calling clinics about the vaccine and wait for their clinic to contact them.

“Local practices will manage vaccination roll-out for their own patients," Castlemaine Health’s director of medical services Dr Peter Sloan said.

"They’ll be vaccinating their most vulnerable patients first," Dr Sloan said.

"Your GP clinic is reviewing yours and all other patient information to assess vulnerability factors.

"They’ll contact you to arrange an appointment as soon as you’re eligible and vaccine is available.”

Plans to increase the number of lots in a Woodend subdivision from 16 to 22 will go before Macedon Ranges Shire Council in April.

The 3.5 hectares at 36 Sullivan Road currently comprises 16 lots of about 1750sm in area but the proposed six-lot increase would reduce lots to between 1207sm and 1363sm.

Objectors argue the change to minimum standard lot size is too small in context of surrounds and preferred neighbourhood character.

The site is located 1.3 kilometres southeast of the Woodend town centre, directly adjacent to the township boundary.

"In Phase 1b there are around six million people," Dr Sloan said.

"Not everyone will be vaccinated immediately. While distribution may seem slow it will be equitable and carefully managed to ensure that no one misses out.”

COVID-19 vaccine is being rolled out in phases that have been determined by the Australian Government.

In the Loddon Mallee region - which includes the Castlemaine local area - Bendigo Health is the coordinating hub managing distribution.

Allocation of the vaccine for Mount Alexander Shire will depend on supply, with rollout to increase as more vaccine becomes available.

Health authorities are urging all Australians to get vaccinated.

Tradie and mental health advocate Jeremy Forbes is encouraging Macedon Ranges locals to share their thoughts on what it means to be a man in 2021.

He has thrown his support behind new research project The Human Code that looks at men’s mental health specifically within the Macedon Ranges.

Mr Forbes said Macedon Ranges had been identified as an area experiencing high rates of harmful behaviours such as suicide, family violence, and alcohol use related harm, which were associated with men and boys adopting traditional outdated stereotypes of what it meant to be a man.

"There is a stereotypical idea of a tradie that's strong, stoic, resilient, and being silent on emotion because there's this idea that it's weak," he said.

"Pressure to conform to these stereotypes, which idealise toughness, selfreliance and emotional restriction, can contribute to men's likelihood of distress and harmful behaviours."

Mr Forbes is encouraging people to take part in The Human Code by contributing to the research through an online survey that seeks feedback from 1000 Macedon Ranges community members, as well as targeted interviews and focus groups, to help researchers to understand the attitudes and behaviours of men in the Macedon Ranges and how they align with traditional masculine stereotypes.

The study seeks to understand the who, when and why of these behaviours, so that community led interventions targeted at promoting healthier masculinities can be developed in the region, supporting the longer-term vision of transformational change of attitudes and behaviours of men in the area.

Bridge on Froomes decision time looms Eve Lamb

The future of Castlemaine's Froomes Road Bridge is expected to become clearer after next month's Mount Alexander Shire Council meeting.

Whether it will be replaced with a single or double-lane structure remains a matter of controversy since the former council last year ratified awarding a $1,018,300.10 contract to VEC Pty Ltd to replace the current single-lane bridge with a double-lane structure.

The decision drew the ire of many locals, worried that doing so will increase the volume and size of vehicular traffic using the leafy precinct, abutting the botanical gardens, negatively impacting safety and heritage values.

At the council's March meeting last week, two local residents spoke out during public question time, urging the council not to proceed with plans for a double-lane replacement.

Castlemaine local Lisa Pollard said "four generations of my children's family have lived in this area and it's one of the most beautiful areas in Castlemaine".

"This current change that council is proposing goes far in advance of anything that's happened previously and will totally destroy the area," Ms Pollard said.

"The area has six overlays already, which have been implemented by council and council staff in consultation with other governing bodies such as Heritage Victoria and the Indigenous community."

Ms Pollard said permitting a double-lane structure to replace the current single-lane bridge would

"allow double bogey trucks to travel along this minor road".

"We really strongly urge council and council staff to consider their decisions and perhaps change their mind."

Another local, Froomes Road Bridge Action Group member Ian Edwards, also urged councillors to recant the previously endorsed double-lane design.

"Put yourself in 100 years' time councillors.

People will thank you," he said.

Cr Stephen Gardner noted that the matter was expected to be brought before councillors at next month's council meeting for a decision.

Cr Christine Henderson asked for details of relevant overlays to be provided.

"I've heard several times now a reference to the six overlays that affect decisions to made about the bridge," Cr Henderson said.

"Could details of those six overlays that are referred to repeatedly by the community please be included in the report."

Mayor Cr Tony Cordy said the outcome would likely prove "interesting".

"I'm not sure exactly where we're going to end up with Froomes Road Bridge but I can assure you there's some interesting debate," Cr Cordy said.

"At this point, council is still to make a final decision on Froomes Road Bridge so it will be interesting to see how that turns out."

The former council's decision to demolish and replace the existing bridge followed an assessment that found the bridge was at the end of its life with several serious structural issues identified.

Sixteen months after moving into her new abode in Castlemaine's agenda-setting eco village, The Paddock, Deb Shand is loving her new lifestyle.

The retired library technician is an escapee from metro Melbourne and became the proud new owner of one of the first seven residences built at The Paddock after she met project co-founder Neil Barrett at a sustainability festival.

"I moved here in November 2019," Deb says.

The move happened nicely before COVID struck.

But Deb ended up with a few unanticipated house guests when her son moved back from Japan just in time to need to go into COVID quarantine.

"It was just before hotel quarantine started so he quarantined here," Deb says.

"My son and my daughter-in-law and little grandson all ended up staying here through lockdown as well."

While her guests have since relocated to Melbourne, Deb is loving life at the eco village where all seven residences in stage one are now occupied.

"And all eight houses in stages two and three have pre-sold," says Mr Barrett as he prepares to lead this Sunday's site tours on offer.

Construction work is now under way to complete stage two by June 16, and stage three by late November.

NEWS Drug driver charged A 25-year-old probationary driver has been charged with drug driving, speeding and other offences after he was nabbed travelling 166km/h on the Calder Freeway last week. Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol officers said the Malmsbury man returned a positive reading for illicit drugs and had his vehicle immediately impounded for 30 days.

School upgrade Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Specialist School students are celebrating the school’s $4.2 million upgrade with bigger, better classrooms and school facilities to learn in.

The upgrade has seen a new administration and multipurpose hall building delivered – which includes new administration offices, meeting rooms, staff amenities, food technology and music classrooms, and student amenities.

The project also included a new workshop arts room, including a new kiln room and store, a new automotive room, including a bike store, a new materials technology space and a refurbished staff lounge.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas and Sunbury MP Josh Bull visited the school’s Bullengarook campus last week.

“This incredible transformation will really enhance what is already an amazing school with fantastic staff,” Ms Thomas said.

Raysett Constructions Australia has also recently been appointed to build the $10.8M upgrade at the Sunbury campus - which will see refurbishment works of six heritage-listed buildings and associated site services.

It will modernise the school's food technology and music facilities, library, staff areas, multipurpose hall, staff and student amenities and a meeting room, and upgrade areas the school uses to provide allied health services.

The new $1.28 million building will provide a state-of-the-art science and technology facility.

$1.2M boost for Steiner School Lisa Dennis

Senior students at Castlemaine Steiner School and Kindergarten will enjoy access to a brand-new science and technology space thanks to $1.28 million in funding from the federal government's Capital Grants Program.

The school is in the process of finalising plans for the state-ofthe-art development and is excited about the concept for the new classes seven and eight facility, which will be the focus of science, technology and computer studies.

The building will also feature universal-access toilets.

Principal Danilo Paglialonga said the growing school community was thrilled to receive the latest funding allocation.

"Our existing science building is quite small and equipment has to be packed away after every lesson. This fantastic new building

will provide our senior students with a purpose-built space in which to enjoy their secondary science and technology studies," he said.

Architects Ian Field and Dipan Shah of Life Design Architecture said their aim was to design a building that would be in keeping and balance with the school's existing architecture.

"We wanted to ensure the building has plenty of natural light and that students can connect with the nature that surrounds them," Mr Field said.

Mr Shah said they also took into account the school's sustainable philosophies.

"The building will use minimal energy. It will be warmed by thermal heat and also feature solar power," he said.

The project will go to tender in late May or June and construction is expected to begin later this year with a view to the project being completed in mid-2022.

Director takes job in premier’s office

Mount Alexander Shire Council will have to find a new director of infrastructure and development after its current incumbent announced she was moving on to a new role in the office of Premier Dan Andrews.

The announcement - noted at last week's council meeting - comes just under a year after Castlemaine local Jess Howard took up her appointment to the council role.

At last week's council meeting, Mount Alexander CEO Darren Fuzzard and mayor Cr Tony Cordy both congratulated Ms Howard on her new role as director of policy and cabinet in the office of the premier.

Projects miss out MP calls for more funds

Rural and regional communities will continue to miss out on opportunities without proper funding for grassroots grants programs, says McEwen MP Rob Mitchell.

The MP has urged the federal government to double funding in the Stronger Communities Grants program after seeing an overwhelming number of applications turned down.

SCP provides grants of $2500-$20,000 to community organisations and local governments for small capital projects that provide real social benefits for local communities.

Each electorate can take applications for a maximum of 20 projects, valued in total at $150,000, but in the latest round there were more than 70 applications for McEwen with a total value of $1 million.

“We were genuinely overwhelmed with the unprecedented level of interest in the program this year,” Mr Mitchell said.

“This huge uptake could be due to a range of factors including the lack of opportunities for groups to fundraise due to the pandemic… These applications are almost all from local community volunteers and this program is now creating more losers than winners.”

Mr Mitchell said the needs of his growing electorate, with its mix of urban and semi-urban communities, smaller rural towns and villages and regional towns, were increasing enormously, while the level of SCP funding had been stagnant since 2015.

“McEwen has more than a dozen towns, such as Kilmore, Lancefield, Riddells Creek and Gisborne that all need their own dedicated facilities, such as CFA stations, sporting facilities, community halls,” Mr Mitchell said.

“Our electorate is 2670 square kilometres, compared with some urban electorates that can be as small as 32 square kilometres and don’t have multiple facilities across many towns.”

Surge in scams

Holiday-makers are warned to make their online purchases with caution following a surge of scams over the past five months.

Consumer Affairs Victoria has received 17 reports of caravan scams since October 2020, compared with two reports in 2019.

Scammers are advertising caravans online, then making excuses – or taking advantage of lockdown limitations – to convince buyers not to view the vehicle in person, encouraging them to make their purchase ‘sight unseen’.

Buyers are then being persuaded to deposit money into a bank account, with promises that they’ll be able to come and

collect the caravan, or that the vehicle will be delivered to them. After the buyer makes the deposit, the scammer stops communicating, and the product is never received.

Minister for Consumer Affairs Melissa Horne said it was important for people to ensure their purchase was the real deal.

"If you're making a major purchase, such as a caravan, make sure to see it in person before you pay any money. Being vigilant will save you a lot of time, money and disappointment in the long run," she said.

When buying online, be wary of anyone who stops you from seeking further information about a product as this can often be a sign of a scammer.

Kyneton Rotary has stepped up to assist Ambulance Victoria to record the locations of life-saving automatic external defibrillators in the Kyneton area to enable rapid access in the event of an emergency.

According to Ambulance Victoria, it attends more than 5500 cardiac arrests each year but unfortunately only one in 10 survive. The early use of a defibrillator by members of the public can significantly increase survival rates.

That is why an up-to-date register of AED locations is critical in making the life-saving devices available for use as soon as possible to people who need them.

Castlemaine's Ebony Robinson Greenley has a sleek new look after bidding farewell to her lovely long locks - all for a top-notch cause. The 21-year-old decided to sign up for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave with an initial aim to raise $500.

After setting her decisive appointment with local hairdresser Jodie McLean, Ebony is now sporting a bold new aerodynamic look.

However after exceeding $800 in funds raised - her total so far is over $882 - Ebony has since upped her goal to achieving $1000.

Donations can still be made to the Foundation.

Ebony works at Jenny’s Early Learning Centre in Epsom and has had a fantastic reception from all the children she looks after, with some of the families still donating after seeing how brave she was to cut off all her hair.

A downturn of sales in the world of art and the need to put bread on the family table led artist Lee Trewartha to open a foodie heaven in Kyneton's Piper Street, The Starving Artist Food Gallery.

A love of food, cooking and art are now united in a business that more or less evolved through demand for the product it produces.

That began a few years back when Lee was studying for her PhD in fine art and 'scholarship time' in the US and France introduced her to some totally fabulous scrolls...

"I just had to have them in my life when I got back here," Lee says.

She began making them from a recipe she devised. A friend then wanted some for an event - and when she told Lee she needed them by the 100s, that's when mass production kicked in. Mind you, it was in Lee's own kitchen from 15 little bread machines she bought or borrowed.

But the method was successful and after selling many thousands of them though markets and other special outlets, those little machines helped Lee turn out 22,000 scrolls.

Fast track to three years ago and because of that product popularity, Lee and her husband Andrew knew they needed to move their baking and food business away from Bendigo and almost instantly, over one weekend, purchased 95 Piper Street where they now make those scrolls under a business subtitle, Dr Scroll.

"I won't get my PhD now," Lee says," So I might as well be a doctor of something else."

Everything produced is with small-batch care in mind and the big day in Piper Street is Saturday when people are literally lined up down the street and usually around the corner to get those scrolls, plus a whole range of sourdough breads, plus brioche, savoury pastries and cakes from the kitchen of The Starving Artist Food Gallery, which, by the way, is overseen not just be Lee but her husband, son Callum in the kitchen and the like-minded Bec. If you are lured by the aroma of the best-selling cinnamon scrolls (they make between 15-18 different flavours each week), you might like to enjoy a French-style breakfast or lunch in the beautifully decorated cafe on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday before you take your buys home, no doubt thanking heaven for that downturn in the art market!

Its essential for the gentle, even heat creme brûlée needs. Boil your kettle (fill it to maximum). Find a roasting that will fit your ramekins, in this case about six. Then place a tea towel in the bottom of the pan first and your ramekins on top so they don’t slide around. Set aside.

Cut open your vanilla bean and scrape the lovely black seeds out and place them into a saucepan along with your cream. Throw the pod in too, there’s plenty of flavour in there and you can fish it out later.

Gently warm the vanilla and cream, it needs to be hot, but do not boil.

In a separate bowl whisk your yolks and sugar together then add about a cup of the hot cream to your eggs while stirring the whole time, this will temper your eggs so you don’t end up with scrambled eggs. Then add the rest of your cream mix to the eggs and mix through.

Pour the mix evenly between your six ramekins. Place in your preheated oven and pour your boiled water into the roasting tin so the water comes half way up the sides of the ramekins.

Cook for 30 - 35 minutes. Depending on your oven this may vary. The custard should be just set with a slight wobble in the centre.

Take out of the bain marie and refrigerate (covered) for two hours.

To serve. Take out of the refrigerator 1 hour before serving to bring to room temp, cover with two teaspoons of sugar for each brûlée and either use a culinary blowtorch to gently toffee the sugar, or alternatively place under the grilled...but watch it like a hawk!

All there is left to do is enjoy this delectable dessert.

The pub of the Chinese detective Hotels are not what they used to be. Thank goodness. After all, who would want to go back to the six o'clock swill, the ladies lounge (yes, women only) or bars that were just for the blokes?

Are we going too far back and you don't recall any of this? Perhaps it needs pointing out just to emphasise that pubs have changed drastically over time.

Years and years ago there was one particular pub in Kyneton's Piper Street that was probably just as hotels used to be. Now it's totally different. It really doesn't mirror being a pub at all. But it is.

The first thing that will grab you about what used to be known locally as Kelly's and later the Piper Street Hotel, is the name. Don't try saying it quickly. Fook Shing is what the once most traditional of country pubs is now called.

It's the brainchild of Justin and Martine Forrester, two locals with strong, 30-year-long backgrounds in the hospitality industry.

Martine said they wanted their own business and saw a gap in Kyneton's now lauded food scene.

"We wanted to bring good South East Asian food to Kyneton," and that is what the Forresters have done.

Fook Shing specialises in food from what Justin describes as the golden triangle - Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and China.

Food is often spicy and always interesting and offered, as is often the case in Asia, in small, medium and larger dishes.

As for the drinks, there is plenty for those for those who like the classics plus Tiger Beer, Fook Bier and more. The wine list has been married to the menu with a good range of aromatic whites and reds to offset the kick of spice in the food.

Then there is a range of really yummy cocktails...

As for Fook Shing, he was a famous, talented and

highly successful Goldrush-era Chinese detective whose specialty was keeping an eye on the legal behaviour or otherwise of his country folk on the goldfields. He was also an interpreter and was for a short time involved in the hunt for that famous thief and murderer, Ned Kelly.

His portrait greets guests at his namesake hotel as soon as they step across the threshold from the pub's classic country street facade. And rumour has it that he once stayed at that very hotel during the Goldrush when it was originally a temperance hotel.

Cub Scouts from 1st Kyneton Scout group received their Grey Wolf awards at a recent state award ceremony held in Altona.

This is scouting’s pinnacle achievement for the Cub section and requires many hours of hard work by the youth members. Guided by their family and leaders, they must work through many requirements, even planning and executing a hike with their peers.

Kyneton Cubs Macey, Loki and Kelley were three of many from all over Victoria who received the Grey Wolf award, and their smiles show us a story of pride.

Loki had achieved his award during his time at 1st Woodend, but was well supported by both groups at the ceremony.

"They were so proud of themselves, as were their families. So was everyone at 1st Kyneton," trainee group leader Corinne Twomey said.

"It's rewarding to see them engaging and having fun, but it's extra special when you see them reap the rewards of hard work and resilience."

When asked how the group had fared throughout the COVID-19 lockdown, Corinne said it had been hard to keep the members engaged because they couldn't do all the things they normally would.

"We have tread gently and we are now hoping to move forward with gusto once we can book in some outdoor activities and start to engage with the community again," Corinne said.

"We’re making headway with fixing up a hall that has been in disrepair for some time, and we hope to upgrade some important things like heating this year.

"We have an amazing group of kids and parents, new and dynamic leaders coming on board, and that counts for a lot."

1st Kyneton Scouts are looking for adults to undergo Joey Scout leadership training (age five-eight) to rebuild a section that has had to close due to a leadership re-shuffle. If you think you can help out, contact Corinne on 0447 889 720.

U3A members take a historical tour of Kyneton.

Kicking up their heels U3A Kyneton has announced a new International Folk Dancing course.

The introductory session will be held on March 29 at 10am in the Red Brick Hall, Yaldwyn Street West, Kyneton.

It is never too late to enrol in the many and diverse courses and activities this dynamic and proactive group offers.

The bushwalkers trek a different route every second week, exploring the many walks in the district, often routes not known to many of us.

Dog walkers are out and about every Thursday and the first of two historical tours of Kyneton have begun.

Tai Chi invigorates both body and soul, while many are learning to grow their own

vegetables. The course in 'First Australians' has given great insight into this topic, and French has proven popular - all classes now full!

Every Friday afternoon, U3A Kyneton entertains and listens to different, diverse speakers, presenting many varied topics of interest. A member of the committee is always at the Red Brick Hall to greet new members and assist with any enquiries.

Joining the chorus Frances Knight, Castlemaine I would like to add my name to the long lost of local residents dismayed by the prospect of a new supermarket near the corner of Forest and Urquhart Streets.

In planning terms it can make no sense to have two major supermarkets virtually next door to each other in the centre of town when all the new populations requiring increased facilities are being situated further and further away on the outskirts.

The 'Melbournisation' of Castlemaine in common with many other towns leaves large numbers of people dependent on ever-longer car journeys for every single facility and activity that takes place outside their homes, causing increased road congestion and decreased community.

Cramming this supermarket into an already busy area where no supermarket is actually needed will result in an unassessable level of additional traffic along Forest Street and its feeder roads - noting of course that supermarkets tend to open for 12 hours a day and all weekend.

This has implications for many residents, but why would any development be considered that will reduce the quality of a primary school population's environment?

We should be seeking to reduce traffic hazards and vehicle pollution in this area, not contemplating a serious increase of constant traffic, including heavy transport.

The new supermarket should be where it is needed - within easy reach of the newer residential areas while providing an alternative to the existing facilities for all.

Hopefully it could become the hub for the new community-building developments and boost the integration of old and new Castlemaine.

The idea of using the Forest Street side for an aged-care facility is an excellent one, making a positive relationship with the primary school rather than a negative one, and enabling residents to retain connection to the community in which they may have lived for many years.

Sound business sense Ramon and Mary Pavlin, Golden Point via Chewton Totally agree that our community needs to 'Consider the animals' (Opinions, March 9).

We found it hard to comprehend that when RSPCA decided to withdraw their facilitation of an animal shelter and op shop in Mount Alexander Shire, they also stripped our shire of all assets so generously donated by our community over many decades, including many bequests in people's estates to support and care for abandoned dogs and cats in our shire.

Those donations also enabled a house to be purchased in Forest Street for the op shop, that RSPCA subsequently sold for $465,000 and took those funds out of our community.

Mount Alexander Animal Welfare was created to replace the loss of an animal shelter after RSPCA's withdrawal.

The dedicated MAAW team should be supported in their endeavours to so successfully re-establish an op shop that financially supports a shelter for animals in need.

L. Maynard your letter seems to cast dispersions on the current MAAW committee, stating inaccurate 'facts' . You state the op shop is only open to the public two days a week - FACT is shop is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday mornings - with Mondays and Wednesdays being used to do 'required' deep COVID regulated cleaning and for acceptance of larger furniture donations.

Installing security cameras is a sign of our 'modern' times, protecting volunteers, premises and to stop illegal dumping of animals and unsuitable goods.

MAAW into further debt, taking out loans and paying interest, to establish an onsite, fully equipped vet clinic, is, to me, sound business sense, instead being able to issue vouchers to people with injured or ill animals, who cannot afford treatment for their beloved pets, to attend already established Castlemaine vet clinics.

The sooner the better Hans Paas, Castlemaine There has been some confusion regarding my previous letter about MAAW ('Not too late', Opinions, March 16).

I made the claim that; "We can no longer have confidence in the management of the finances, staff and volunteers at MAAW." With regard to the finances it is now clear that the committee has been spending funds received via donations on legal advice to prevent members from accessing information that verifies multiple breaches of the constitution and rules by the committee.

With regard to management of staff and volunteers, the committee has now had adverse findings made against it by the appropriate authorities as a result of alleged breaches regarding work safety and bullying.

Critics of this unelected and unaccountable committee like me have nothing but admiration for the staff and volunteers who remain in their positions despite the most appalling conduct towards them. Clearly, unlike the committee, they are putting animal welfare first and making every effort they can to deliver it in very challenging circumstances.

The sooner there are free and fair elections based on an accurate and truthful Register of Members the better.

Alas, I will not have a vote as my membership application has been rejected, though on what grounds I can only guess at.

A bit rich George Musil, Woodend I think it a bit rich of Labor MPs like Lisa Chesters to denigrate the PM for stopping JobKeeper (which was always a temporary scheme) on grounds that Victorian jobs and businesses will suffer, when it is precisely the Victorian Government that is responsible for demise of the many businesses and therefore jobs.

It is the Victorian Government that should be providing the compensation for its mismanagement of COVID-19, especially in rural Victoria.

But it seems that Victorian Labor is more interested in spending tens of billions of (our) Victorian $$$ playing with/building its pet train set in Melbourne.

Protect our heritage Marion Downe, Castlemaine As a concerned resident, life member of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria), and great granddaughter of William Beynon Downe, the architect of the Victorian heritage-listed house at 37 Farnsworth Street, Castlemaine, I wish to draw attention to the application for a planning permit for the erection of two two-storey dwellings at 37a and 37b Farnsworth Street, currently before the planning department of Mount Alexander Shire Council.

This historic precinct is covered by a heritage overlay and includes the adjacent 1856 Powder Magazine and cottage, in addition to 37 Farnsworth Street known locally as 'Castle House'.

I consider the proposed development will destroy the historical, architectural and aesthetic value of this historic precinct and should not be allowed.

'Castle House' and the National Trust classified Market Building, together with

their architect William Beynon Downe, should demonstrate what valuable assets Castlemaine possesses, and should be preserved at all costs.

The proposed development illustrates the limits of conservation. Many in the Castlemaine community value the town's unique cultural heritage, but we continue the risk of losing the very things that tie us to place and instil them with meaning, not only in our lifetime, but also for future generations.

Clean, green, efficient and healthy Patrick Hockey, Castlemaine One of the nicest aspects of owning and driving an electric car in central Victoria is the many conversations that it creates.

One of the commonest is when people approach you at a charging station with questions about the experience.

The key quality of these conversations is one of excitement; instead of the doom and gloom lens through which a lot of people look at the future these days, electric cars offer the future that we all thought we would have in this century: clean, green, efficient and healthy.

Liz Nolan, president, Mount Alexander Animal Welfare I write in response to Hans Pass’ letter ('Not too late', Opinions, March 16) and other negative letters about MAAW and wish to advise that the criticism by a select few will not impact on what the community knows and thinks about MAAW activities and the people involved.

The committee, staff and volunteers have quietly gone about their business in running both the shelter and the Empawrium without reacting to the negative publicity and I am immensely proud of the professionalism displayed by these individuals who work tirelessly to provide for the animals in our care and raise money for enhancing our facilities and undertaking new initiatives.

Sadly, for a range of reasons, the committee did not think that the vet clinic was a viable option, however, MAAW is helping local families in an alternative way by assisting with the payment of veterinary bills.

To those who persist in raging against the committee and people involved, I can only say that the community is over it and has tuned out. Let us get on with doing what we do best, looking after the animals that come into our care and advocating for change to animal cruelty.

Kyneton golf The first round of match lay for Kyneton’s 2020 championships across three grades as played on Saturday.

Those advancing were Jesper Hansen, Jason McClure, David Moore, Mark Sciberas (Open); Namik Akkurt, David Ryan, Terry Kot and Noel Alldis (B-grade), and William Dodd, Paul Moore, Jing Biscocho and Peter Kewniuk (C-grade).

The day’s stableford went to Rick O’Donnell (28) with 34 points, from Noel Alldis.

Jenny Kerr (30) was the women’s winner with 40 points, from Cate Thomas (26) on 38.

Tuesday stableford: A-grade went to Lorraine Ryan (19) with 35 points, from Marg Scoble Beth Murray (25) and Marg Scoble (24) 31.

Liz Turang (39) won B-grade on a countback from Bron Dwyer (27) with 39 points.

Romsey golf A Romsey team was thrilled to win the Gordon Howells Kilmore Bowl event on Thursday.

Perfect conditions prevailed, and the combination of Elaine Scanlon 37 points, Wendy Gosden 35 and Beryl Cole 38 (also NTP) had a combined 110 points, two clear of a Kilmore line-up. There were 57 players participating.

On Saturday, perfect weather and course conditions enticed good scores, with the day’s stableford winner being Trent Cannon (21 handicap) with 41 points, from Chris vanDerVliet (25) on 40, and Andrew Clement (8) 36.

Lancefield golf ladies hosted the Romsey women in a very relaxing Ambrose event, which atlernates between the two clubs on a yearly basis.

Players enjoyed the camaraderie, renewing old friendships and making some new golf friends. RGC is pleased to welcome former long-time member Shirley Shelton back to the club.

Woodend golf The winners of the 2021 Bob Mason Classic at Woodend Golf Club has been decided.

Woodend’s Danny Bellchambers, winner of the Lancefield Open, teamed up with Terence Kempton and Danial Park to finish with an impressive 531/6, less than a stroke better than runners-up Gary

Dudderidge, Vega Almbakk and Andrew Cassim.

The Woodend ladies played the first round of their championship last Wednesday.

Veronica Sullivan set the pace with an 88 off the stick, and took out the day’s handicap award with a nett 67, three clear of Frances Bowen.

Trentham golf The Arthur Moloney Trophy was keenly contested at Trentham on Saturday.

Neale Hull (handicap 19) was the winner with 42 stableford points and he also topped Bgrade.

Gisborne’s Derek Jones (12) took out A-grade with 40 points, and Tim Goodwin (22) was best in C-grade with 41.

The ladies returned some fine scores, but by far the best was 49 points from C-grader Judith Callahan.

Di Lewis won B-grade with 42, and Claire Perston A-grade with 40.

A two-person Ambrose last Wednesday attracted 14 visitors from various clubs, as well as the locals.

The pairing of Martin Walker and Reg Palmer were successful with a 61.5 nett. # The club is pleased to announce Trentham Historical Society will benefit by $4160 from the recent annual Charity Day at Trentham.

Remarkable performance Bill West

In a remarkable training performance, George Osborne has won the prestigious City Handicap at Albury for the third successive year with Mount Horeb.

The six-year-old galloper made it seven wins and a second in eight starts at Albury on the first day of the Albury Cup Carnival on Thursday.

“He just goes well at Albury ... his record says its all,” Osborne said after Mount Horeb won the $73,500 feature race over 1175m.

There was plenty of advance publicity about the Kyneton galloper’s prospects as he previous win was in the same event 12 months previously, with seven unplaced runs sandwiched in between.

Mount Horeb, a six-year-old, was recently put up for sale in an on-line auction but failed to reach the reserve, with Osborne then concentrating on another stint at Albury.

An easy win in a Kyneton jump out on February 20 raised hopes, but finishing last on a heavy track over 1100m at Ballarat on March

3 put some punters off supporting Mount Horeb on his favourite track. Others took the punt on form the reverse way of going at Albury Highly rated Blaike McDougall, a 26-year-old jockey with 524 wins to his credit, again had the ride and positioned Mount Horeb outside the leader.

He was able to maintain momentum in the straight and hold off Bautista by 0.2 lengths.

Mount Horeb has now earned connections $180,500 from 25 starts, with all but one win coming on the Albury track.

Mixed fortunes at Avoca

George Osborne had mixed fortunes at Avoca on Saturday, winning two races, only to find one declared a 'no race' because it was run over the wrong distance – 1200m and not 1100m.

The extraordinary circumstance of how this occurred is under investigation. Having his second race start, grey galloper Kerioth, a half brother to Mount Horeb, impressively won the second race on the program by five lengths. Then came the 'no race' ruling, a real blow to Kerioth’s connections and those who had

backed the three-year-old.

Osborne’s luck changed later in the meeting when he won with rank outsider Melisandre Rossa. The fiveyear-old mare was ridden by Jason Lyon in a BM64 Handicap.

Kyneton trainer Steven Noble was also successful when six-year-old mare Velvet Thunder won the opening Maiden at Avoca over 1860m.

Noble’s daughter, Samantha, rode the winner who started at odds of $3.70 and won by 0.2 lengths.

The race commemorates the late Frank Conlan, a long-time local trainer who died in an accident when riding a horse at North Woodend in late February, 2019.

Frank Conlan also worked at Kyneton race meetings, and his son Tom – also a local trainer – was present at Friday’s meeting.

Almighty Will, a $9 chance, finished strongly to win the 1450m race by a length.

The four-year-old is trained by Liam Howley, formerly assistant trainer and then head trainer for prolific owner Lloyd Williams at Macedon Lodge.

Lancefield golf C-grader Brian Courtney bounced back to top form with 41 stableford points on Saturday.

This was the day’s best score, with another 'old timer' in Ken Ryan taking out B-grade with 39, and Jamie Byron returning 37 to top C-grade.

On Thursday, Lancefield ladies hosted the annual Reciprocal Day, welcoming their Romsey counterparts.

Croquet tournament The Kyneton Croquet Club held their annual Invitational Tournament last week with Val Hopkins from Essendon taking out the title.

This is always a popular event and having been unable to hold it last year due to Covid meant huge interest this year. When entries closed, 28 players from 11 clubs had put down their names to take on players from Kyneton.

Players came from many areas of Victoria and New South Wales with one player coning from the Toronto Club in Newcastle. It was also good to see a number of younger players amongst those vying for the win.

Kyneton turned on excellent weather for the visitors. The lawns were a bit slow with a few rough spots but everyone was so glad to be able to get out and have a game that no-one seemed to mind.

There was still plenty of good competition with many close games.

After three rounds of competition, three players were all tied on three wins, but after the fourth round, Val Hopkins emerged as the only undefeated player and was crowned champion with a total of 31 hoops.

The Kyneton Croquet Club has seen a good increase in membership in the past few months putting the Club in a strong position for the future.

Dalhousie fundraiser Dalhousie District Golf Association’s Country Teams Fundraiser was held at Euroa earlier this month, with 26 teams (104 players) from various clubs participating. The four-person Ambrose produced some very low scores, with Mt Macedon’s Jim Hynes, Mat Willis, Jonno Langmaid and Mick Doyle carding a 59 to be the men’s scratch winners, one shot clear of Seymour’s Ian Richardson, Peter Nelsonm Mark Corradin and Mark Fountain.

Back-to-back for Berries Malmsbury has beaten Bacchus Marsh to take out the Gisborne District Cricket Association’s division one premiership for the second season in a row.

A fine performance by the Berries to win their last eight matches after a somewhat sluggish start to the season At one stage they looked almost certain to miss a finals berth.

And like the one run semi-final win over Woodend, the grand final went down to the wire with Malmsbury winning on Saturday with four balls to spare when official Man of the Match Tom Logan hit a boundary.

After the semi-final, Malmsbury thought they would be hosting Gisborne at the MCG, but things changed when it was ruled Gisborne had inadvertently utilised an extra player, and Bacchus Marsh was declared the winner of their semi-final.

Thus it was a home game for the Marsh, and it turned out to be a closely fought final.

The home side elected to bat, and made a steady start. Importantly, all the Malmsbury bowlers kept the brakes on the scoring for most of the 40 overs, and fieldsmen were adept at saving runs.

31 and Dave Dickerson 38 was important.

At 7/97 the Marsh was struggling, but an enterprising eighth wicket stand carried the score to 7/140 at closure; not a big score, but one that required some good batting.

Palmy Singh and Matt Cox each sent down eight overs, and Singh 2-23 and Cox 1-12 played an important role. Kyle Fisher, JD Singh and Logan also claimed wickets.

Malmsbury’s opening bats defied the new ball, the first wicket falling at 41.

Cox 43 (four fours, one six) and Palmy Singh 21 (one huge six) kept the run rate up, but the home side fought back to have Malmsbury 5/89.

With the game in the balance, it was Guy Nelson and Logan who defied the bowlers; Nelson was the perfect foil for the big-hitting Logan, who produced a timely swashbuckling 41 (seven fours, one six) in the game which mattered.

With three runs needed for victory off the final over, the cool Nelson (11 not out) pushed a single and Logan hit the next delivery for four (5/143).

A big effort by the Berries, who extend thanks to Dave and Anda for putting up with a very noisy crew at the Malmsbury Pub on Saturday night.

Crucial run out sets up victory Bill West

The run out of prodigious century maker Dilan Chandima for 6 put Bacchus Marsh in the box seat to win the McIntyre Cup grand final on Saturday.

A very tight attack kept the brakes on Sunbury United’s openers, and Chandima’s run out left United reeling at 2/12.

Ryan Billinghurst 46 and Amrit Sandhu 39 restored some respectability with a third-wicket stand of 70, but the middle and late order bats failed; all out for 123 in 37.2 overs (J. Powell 3-31, R. Watson 2-5, J. Taylor 2-10, T. Waddell 2-31) was not enough to worry the strong Marsh batting brigade.

Nineteen runs came from United’s opening over, and the Marsh’s top order all made contributions to finish at 3/127 after 35 overs. A similar scenario to the semifinal against Gisborne.

The Johnstone Shield grand final at Wallan was disappointingly one-sided, against

all expectations.

Bacchus Marsh hit up 8/183 (Kapil Dua 65, Mace Cousins 49 – P. Rode three wickets) and Wallan’s batting brigade capitulated to be bundled out for 75 in just 22 overs.

Malmsbury won the division one flag in a thriller (see separate report).

MACEDON TRIUMPH Macedon fought hard to edge out Jensen Shield flag-favourite Romsey with five balls to spare in a tense division two grand final.

The home side compiled 7/138 c.c.

(Corey Day 32, Matt Hoyt 28 not out) with Macedon’s bowlers sharing the wickets.

Romsey could not break through with the new ball, but made Macedon work for victory, achieved with 6/140 on the board in the last over (Chris Ingleton 30, Brandon Scott 29, Todd Coppin 29, Gary De Royayzo 21 n.o., Dan Trotta 17).

A good effort by Macedon, winning the semi-final and final in very tight finishes.

Gisborne Cricket Club was found to have played 13 players instead of 12 in the division one final against Bacchus Marsh on March 14 and was subsequently stripped of the win.

The Grand Final was hosted by Bacchus Marsh and won by Malmsbury.

GCC president Andrew Headberry explained the club had made an error with their understanding of the rule that originated right at the start of the season under COVID conditions in the regional competition and extended through the year.

"All of our five lower grade teams beneath division one can play with 13 players and we incorrectly included division one in this and played with 13 players right through the season," Headberry said.

"This went undetected by all parties until the semi final on the weekend.

"We made an honest mistake and apologise to our players who have missed out on a grand final experience due to an administration error.

"We will review our selection practices prior to next season, however we acknowledge it has been a difficult season for many reasons and fitting over 100 players into eight teams all year has been challenging.

Gisborne Red lost early wickets, and was dismissed for 116, the shining light being Xavier Holt who scored a fine 61 (10 fours).

The GDCA is now preparing for its annual Presentation Night, with the Sullivan Medal count always a highlight.

Barkers Creek claim premiership Barkers Creek Cricket Club has claimed its fourth consecutive Castlemaine District Cricket Association (CDCA) A Grade premiership after defeating Castlemaine United Cricket Club in Saturday's third and final grand final decider at the Camp Reserve.

In the 2020-2021 season CDCA opted for a one-day format and a 'Best of Three' grand final series. The first day of play was washed out with Castlemaine United on 67.

The second day of play last Sunday March 14 saw Castlemaine United claim a win 9-158 to Barkers Creek 10-136.

Last Saturday the two sides faced off again in the decider.

Barkers Creek won the toss and elected to bat first. The side struggled early losing their openers cheaply but the middle order stood up making 145, with Kalan Huntly 36 and Mark Noonan 30 leading the way.

Brothers Levi Chaffey 3-30 and James Chaffey 2-29 did the damage with the ball for United.

A tie – Trentham prevail Bill West

What a game! The Central Highlands division two grand final at Kyneton on Saturday was a thriller, with scores all tied after 63 ends.

One across the board extra end was needed to decide whether ladder leader Trentham or in-form finals campaigner Romsey would emerge as premiers.

In a tension-packed atmosphere for players and spectators alike, Trentham managed to get a very close bowl near the jack on all three rinks, and Romsey could not regain the initiative.

Trentham scored a single shot on each rink to break the 54-54 deadlock, with Central Highlands president Ian Ball commending both teams on their efforts prior to presenting Trentham’s Max Bruton with the premiership shield.

Harry Plias, the Trentham players were elated; for Romsey, a definite case of what could have been after an easy first semi-final win against Gisborne then a 66-36 preliminary final win completed over Kyneton Golf on Saturday morning.

Trentham is used to tight finishes, winning the second semi-final against Kyneton Golf by six shots.

The grand final was a fluctuating affair, and Romsey received a boost near the halfway mark with 11 shots in two ends by Simon Mayger’s rink which erased a big deficit against Bernie Halpin’s four.

Norm Cooke trailed Roger Kozulins significantly before staging a prolonged comeback.

Respective skippers Corey McKeone (T) and Graeme Cuthbert (R) both drove the jack into the ditch late in the game to lift their sides.

Romsey led by nine shots overall at one stage, but Trentham gradually whittled the deficit back.

Gisborne, Kyneton and Diggers Rest are the midweek competition premiers in the Central Highlands Bowling Division for 2020-2021.

Heavy rain caused Central Highlands division one bowls grand final to be called off after 34 ends had been completed on Saturday afternoon.

At that stage Lancefield held a seven-shot advantage (42-35) over Kyneton, the reigning premiers.

The grand final at Kyneton Golf began with light rain falling, and heavier rain predicted. Weather conditions deterred a large attendance.

The preliminary final that was called off due to rain with Kyneton 20 shots clear of Kyneton Golf, resumed at Lancefield on Saturday morning.

Golf was without topline skipper and CHBD singles and Champion of Champions winner Graham Edwards, who sustained a nasty hand injury requiring medical attention late last week.

Kyneton maintained its advantage, and then moved on the grand final.

Understandably the green was true but slow and rain persisted at fluctuating intensity.

There were some fine bowls played, none better than the one pictured. Four shots down, Lancefield skipper Peter Linehan drew his final bowl for shot between the ditch and jack before the green was declared unfit for play with heavy rain pouring down.

The grand final will resume, weather permitting, with Lancefield leading overall.

Aaron Young’s Lancefield rink leads Peter Ryan 18-8, Jeff Holmes and Andy Macdonald are locked at 14-14, and Linehan trails Mark Smoljo 8-13.
