Children as young as 12 have begun receiving their COVID-19 vaccinations in Castlemaine with the town's local GP clinics now all stocking Pfizer as well as AstraZeneca vaccine. A spokesperson for Castlemaine Health said their staff had begun giving jabs to 12-15-year-olds from last Monday. "There is a huge demand for vaccination from this newly eligible cohort as well as the 16+ population who have really only been eligible for a short period too," they said. "There are some additional logistical challenges with the 12-15 age group, simply because we need a little extra time to document consent and a parent or legal guardian must be present so density limits must be taken into account. "We have added an extra day to our clinic to help cope with demand and respond to supply." Castlemaine GP Dr Ronnie Moule said her Mostyn Street Medical Clinic also began administering the vaccine to youngsters in the 12-15 cohort for the first time last week. "We've done our first for youngsters in this age group starting

Police are investigating two incidents where ATMs were targeted in the Macedon Ranges this month. An ATM at Woodend’s newsagency in High Street was targeted on September 9 sometime between 1.50-2.10am. An NBN cable was cut prior to the offence. The following morning, September 10, an ATM outside a hairdressing salon in Riddells Creek was also targeted at 1am, triggering an alarm. A witness to the Riddells Creek incident saw two men fleeing the location on foot towards a dark-coloured SUV parked near the train station. These incidents are being investigated by a state-wide taskforce. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Macedon Ranges Crime Investigation Unit on 5421 2900 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Stolen goods located

Police have uncovered a stolen offroad buggy and three stolen motorcycles in Lancefield along with drugs and other stolen motorcycle memorabilia. Detectives from the Macedon Ranges Crime Investigation Unit and members from Gisborne, Riddells Creek and Romsey made the discovery after executing a search warrant in McMasters Lane. No person has been arrested at this time however enquiries are continuing to locate several persons of interest. Detective Sergeant Bobetic hailed strong collaboration between police and members of the public that led to this result. Macedon Ranges residents are encouraged to contact local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 to report suspicious activity in their area.

Drugs and weapons charges Police arrested four men after executing two drug search warrants in Bent and Bruce Streets at Macedon earlier this month. The four men from those addresses were arrested for drug and weapons offences and faced Bendigo Magistrates Court. Three of the men have since been released, while a 39-year-old Macedon man remains in custody. He is expected to face the Kyneton Magistrates Court later this month.

Exposure sites were recorded in Kyneton during the past week at the following locations: TerryWhite Chemmart Kyneton – case attended Wednesday, September 15, 11am - 11.40am. Tier 2.

A male and a female aged in their 20s from Woodend are facing drugs charges after being caught in possession of a variety of drugs for a second time. Police first intercepted the couple in a car on the Calder Freeway at Macedon in the late evening of June 1. A search of the car located a variety of drugs. The pair were charged with a range of offences and released on bail. In the early morning of September 15, police located the same couple, in the same car, at the truck stop on the Calder Freeway at Gisborne South. This time drugs and cash were located in the car. The female was processed for drug driving and breaching bail. The male was charged with trafficking drugs and related offences. Both were later remanded in custody at Kyneton Magistrates Court.

A bus trapped at a Benloch floodway on Sunday has renewed long-held safety concerns for Martins Road. The bus, travelling from Weekaway Retreat, became stuck on the road and required assistance from a tip truck. It is believed there were no injuries and passengers boarded alternate transport at the site. Neighbouring resident John Horkings said the floodway had posed a risk for years. He was part of a group pushing for safety improvements and petitioned Macedon Ranges Shire Council for action about eight years ago. "We've been trying to get it addressed to avoid incidents like this,' he told the Express. "It's a danger as there are no side railings, barriers or signage to warn people." He said fog and limited other road access points in the case of a fire also presented concerns. Heavy machinery commonly used to create firebreaks cannot safely access the road.

Drugs, firearms, road policing, youth engagement and COVID response are areas of focus for Macedon Ranges’ new police area commander Inspector Tom Ebinger. He began in the role in July, marking his first regional post in a policing career that spans 34 years. “I come to this role with a bit of experience behind me and hopefully I can use that to benefit the community,” he told the Express. “The sense of community here is really important. My first observations are that the community wants to feel connected with police and that’s a priority of mine – that we’re accessible and visible.” Insp Ebinger said he was eager to work with community agencies and schools to improve youth engagement. He said other focus areas were crime around drugs and firearms, road policing in relation to road trauma and enforcing COVID restrictions. “We’re on the fringe of regional and metropolitan, so there’s an increased police presence. As much as you’ve got the Macedon Ranges police in the area, we’re also getting support from metropolitan police to ensure that people are complying with the COVID restrictions,” he said.

So education now is moving more towards enforcement around blatant and clear breaches. “The majority of people do the right thing but we still are getting those that are flouting rules and we’re taking action against those that choose to run the gauntlet.” Previously posted at Darebin, Insp Ebinger described his move to the area as serendipitous after exploring the region with his wife. “Opportunity arose and I didn’t hesitate to jump at it,” he said. “I feel very fortunate. My first impressions have been really positive and that the community is just fantastic.” The Macedon Ranges Police Service area includes eight police stations and 90 police officers, and support staff. Insp Ebinger encouraged Macedon Ranges residents to engage with local police to improve community safety. “I am making myself accessible. I want to let people know I’m here, I’m approachable and I’m happy to catch up,” he said. “Policing for me is about the community. The community is our priority and we want to provide a service that delivers on community safety.”

The driver of a white Toyota Landcruiser wagon had a medical episode causing him to lose control of his vehicle before it has come to rest against a power pole.

Witnesses wanted

Police are calling for witnesses to a car accident in Mollison Street, Kyneton, last Tuesday. A 4WD crashed into a power pole making it unstable, after having impacted two other vehicles. No occupants of the vehicles were seriously injured. Police are hoping to determine the sequence of events that led to the collision. Closer look at affordable housing Macedon Ranges Shire Council is developing an Affordable Housing Policy to understand the shire's needs and clarify the council's role on this issue. Affordable housing specifically focuses on the housing needs of the very low, low and moderate income households. It is identified as a priority area in the draft Council Plan 2021-2031 and draft Health and Wellbeing Plan 20212025. The Big Housing Build program, announced by the Victorian Government in November, is providing $5.3 billion investment in social and affordable housing. As part of the program, $30 million has been identified as the minimum investment in the Macedon Ranges, providing an opportunity to increase social and affordable housing in the shire. A new state agency, Homes Victoria, will deliver Victoria’s Big Housing Build. The draft policy will be presented to the council for consideration in October.

Teacher of the Year

Having started a TAFE teaching career in her mid-40s, Irene O’Duffy knows firsthand the challenges that many adults face when they return to education. And she has made it her mission, as an adult education learning support teacher, to help others overcome barriers as they pursue new careers. Her innovative learning solutions, including a new assessment instructions video initiative, took centre stage last week at Kangan Institute’s annual staff recognition ceremony where Ms O’Duffy was named Teacher of the Year. “I’m pleased that this award helps highlight the amazing work of learning support teachers in a TAFE environment,” says Ms O’Duffy who teaches an online course for students seeking the English and Math competency required to join the Australian Defence Force. Having dabbled in many fields from small business to retail and marketing – “a real mixed bag”, in her words – Ms O’Duffy says her past experiences serve as a driving force to how she delivers her classes. “I’ve been a lifelong learner and as someone who has come to this career in mid-life, I try to use my previous educational and work experiences to help inform and shape what I develop for students,” she says. “When I design and develop training materials and assessments, I aim to adopt the beginner’s mind, think like a student and contextualise it so it matches their vocation, their literacy and numeracy levels, and most of all, inspires a real love for learning and investigation.” This year, Ms O’Duffy spearheaded the introduction of short instructional videos to guide students in their assess-

ment tasks, a move that has boosted the success rate of her students’ first assessment attempt by more than 50 per cent. “In 2020 I started creating videos to provide feedback to online students who needed to do further work on their assessment tasks. I found that many students were having to resubmit because they misread or misunderstood instructions that were only presented in text. I realised then that pre-empting their questions through clear assessment instruction videos would be even more helpful to students,” she shares. The instructional videos, which consist a screen-cast of the assessment and a voiceover explaining the activity, address a common drawback of online learning compared to traditional classroom lessons. “This video ensures our online students have the same advantage as students in a classroom where one would normally ask a question about an assessment and the whole class would hear the answer,” she says. The new videos have been a game changer for students and teachers, with the initiative soon to be shared with teachers across the state through an upcoming edition of Fine Print, a journal produced by the Victorian Adult Literacy and Basic Education Council. “The instructional videos have led to higher rates of success for students’ first attempt at an assessment. Students also feel more confident and positive about their study efforts because they have fewer resubmissions,” Ms O'Duffy says. “For teachers, it has also meant less time spent repeating assessment instructions and more time to focus on and support students’ individual needs.”

New upgrades to the historic Romsey Mechanics Institute have been unveiled. Improvements include a unisex accessible toilet with a baby change table, storage room within the existing building and renovations to the women’s toilet. They will expand opportunities for groups to use the space. The upgrade was supported with $35,000 from the Victorian Government which the Romsey-Lancefield Community Bank matched. Minister for Regional Development Mary-Anne Thomas visited the institute to officially open the new facilities earlier this month. The Romsey Mechanics Institute which opened in 1875, has played a central role in the community for decades. The original wooden building cost just £200 to build. Over the years it has hosted a library, weekly balls, roller skating and boxing matches.

Heritage works for Romsey, Castlemaine

Romsey's Seymour Cottage, Castlemaine Market and Castlemaine Public Cemetery are among 19 restoration projects to receive state government funding the Living Heritage Program. The program aims to support conservation works to revive and repair ‘at-risk’ places and objects on the Victorian Heritage Register. Seymour Cottage Romsey and Lancefield Districts Historical Society has secured $37,000 to explore revival options for Seymour Cottage in Romsey, built in 1856. The grant will fund the development of a conservation management plan, heritage landscape plan, and structural condition report recommending appropriate remedial measures. Seymour Cottage has been closed to the public since 2017 due to the poor condition of the building and public safety risks. Festival continues with visual light show

The Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival’s Visual Projection Light Show on the Kyneton Mechanics Institute building will now take place on Friday September 24 commencing at 7pm, with the projections continuing every half hour until 10pm. The Light Show, produced virtually by Visual Architecture’s Jim Coad and students of Kyneton Primary School and originally planned earlier during the Daffodil and Arts Festival period, can be viewed safely from near the Kyneton Mechanics and passing by on the footpath in Mollison Street. "As each show will be repeated each half hour we encourage people to choose a suitable time to visit between 7 and 10pm to avoid overcrowding," festival secretary Marg Dearricott said. COVID safety marshals will be in attendance and QR codes and safety information will be available for families and individuals to register their presence. There’s a trend that’s bringing spoonfuls of fun to St Mary’s Primary School at Lancefield and now staff and students are encouraging the wider community to get involved. Spoonville is a miniature garden of personified and decorated wooden spoons helping people to feel connected during the pandemic. St Mary’s Primary students say the trend has injected fun into their remote learning experience and now want to spread the cheer. “We'd love to see the community get on board as well as local businesses,” commu-

nity liaison leader Jo Shannon said. “It would also be fantastic to see a police spoony, CFA spoony, etc. We hope that as the weeks pass our St Mary's Spoonville will continue to grow with many spoony creations!” All that’s needed to get involved is a wooden spoon and materials to help transform it into a spoony person. Exploring our past A small delegation gathered on Chewton's Post Office Hill last Friday for the launch of a new a brochure to encourage and guide walkers to fully explore the assets of the historic reserve. The new resource produced by the Post Office Hill Action Group with assistance from 'Communities for Nature' was officially launched by local archaeologist David Bannear. Mr Bannear’s research and knowledge of the local area and its history is legendary, and he was a co-launcher of the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park in December 2002. He said the site was significant as a remnant gold-rush landscape but also for its geological features. "Not everyone was a fan of Governor La Trobe but he set aside vast amounts of Crown Land such as this and we are fortunate to still have these goldfields remnants today," Mr Bannear said. Rising from Forest Creek the picturesque site was home to Forest Creek’s first post office, a rich goldfield, a rapidly developed economic hub of the goldfields - including pubs, halls, Chewton Railway Station and Adelphi Theatre. The site was also visited by Governor Hotham himself, La Trobe's predecessor, in 1854. Eventually all activity at the once

bustling site ceased and it eventually became a tip site! What a history! For a period Post Office Hill’s future was uncertain and a proposal to 'privatise' it for use as light industrial and housing saw the formation of POHAG – Post Office Hill Action Group. This community group was formed to preserve the space for community usage and has since been licensed to manage Post Office Hill Reserve, all 22.6 hectares of it. POHAG meets regularly, planning activities, walks, working bees, bird nesting box installations, plantings, weed removals, signage and even an orienteering event. The group's latest offering has been 10 years in the making and was created using the detailed map charted by cartographer Mal (Jase) Haysom. Using this map as a base, POHAG has finally produced a brochure to encourage and guide walkers to fully explore the assets of Post Office Hill Reserve. You pick up the new brochure on site at the corner of Railway and Mitchell Streets, from Chewton Town Hall, Chewton Post Office and local tourist centres.

I am discouraged and astounded by the community consultation for Stanley Park by the Macedon Ranges Shire Council. The committee welcomes consultation, but the council has created a process that misinforms the community and is biased in its presentation. The Community Asset Committee is designed in my opinion to look too burdensome, too labour intensive and beyond the reasonable expectations of what a volunteer is expected to do. A CAC can be designed relevant to Stanley Park between an incumbent committee and the council. The description within the consultation is generic. In August of this year, Stanley Park was one of a number of council’s bushland reserves zoned to Public Conservation Resource Zone in recognition of its valued conservation significance. This is where the community consultation becomes misleading and I will comment on two examples. A CAC in this instance would not be described as "Managing finances allocated from council rates, maintenance of built council assets such as toilets, fire risk management, tree safety works, park security and bookings for facilities". A CAC in a conservation zone would have all the other descriptions as described in the consultation, such as development of relevant policies, community engagement and responding to community enquiries, environmental works, implementation of an Environmental Management Plan. Perhaps the council could have suggested grant applications, presenting identified issues and risks to council. A ‘Friends Of’ Stanley Park group would be a tragedy and a sad loss of tradition. The consultation makes this model look so much better! This creates an intended or otherwise unintended bias. The previous Stanley Park Committee of Management was responsible for the reserve and an entity within the council since 1949. It has reported to council with minutes of meeting and has been responsible for removing the weed burden that enveloped the reserve post 1983 from the Ash Wednesday bushfires.

The ‘Friends Of’ model may sound favourable but has no official reporting requirements, cannot make informed park management decisions in their own right, and this group can be removed from operation at the behest of the council. The former committee favours a Community Asset Committee. Other councils rolled over their committees of management into CACs when the Local Government Act 2020 came into being. This is a model that can be designed to retain the tradition of conservation and community engagement that is at the centre of life in our peri-urban shire.

We have been welcomed into the incredible community, in what could have been a very isolating year, and I have the early morning walks along Campaspe River with the dogs of the community to thank for that. There is a whole village that makes that morning walk with their dogs and that has been where my family and I have found our friends and incredible support throughout this beautiful town. We are living in the country but we are not on land. These furry friends of ours need to have a morning of running riot catching up with their friends and being social, only to rest up for the day, following the sun in the garden, gearing up for a solid game of ball in the afternoons. One day when I was walking in the offlead area, in the designated times, my dog and I were enjoying the river bank when the man in last week’s article complaining about the dog owners yelled at me. Yes she was a little ahead of me in the walk and there is a slight bend on that part of the track. I didn’t see his dog on a lead, if I had I would have been cautious, for that I am sorry. She has never attacked or been attacked, ran off or really done anything to make me worry about her or another dog's safety. So what do we do here? There is a wonderful community of trustworthy dogs that are friends and really need this space to live the happy life they deserve and why

should they have to be restricted because of one or two that aren’t friendly? We need to find a way to co-exist, but is that not what the designated times are for? I have considered putting in an application with the council to also include an afternoon off-lead time. Thank you for bringing to my attention that not all dogs are safe, but I do please ask that we keep our morning river community unified, especially in tough times like we are facing now, it really does bring so much joy to us and our dogs. So if your dog is unsafe you just can’t walk with us between 7.30-10am. As for the dog poo, I am a vigilant picker upper, I can’t say I have noticed an immense amount of poo but would never say no to a few extra bins or those free bio-eco-sustainable bags.

A substitute in other words, for any number of suitable words supplied by the English language, including 'unwell', 'stressed', 'sick', 'fragile', 'indisposed', 'exhausted', 'awful', 'bleak', 'bad'; even 'suicidal'. But you resorted to the crude, the vernacular, the cliche to damage the story, which was about promoting help for people whose mental wellbeing is compromised. Maybe your choice of the term was intended to draw attention to a feature of the promotion itself: posters attached to toilet doors. But I think that would be too subtle by half. Regrettably the use of bad language in public is commonplace, but many of your readers don't like it, and over the years haven't had to read it in your pages. Please stop letting them down, and perhaps frame the headline around a sensitive cause more decently. Editor's note: The headline references the catch line of the campaign itself, which aims to reach a particular audience. An audience that evidently does not include the author of this letter.

A new community meal train could help new and expecting Kyneton families in the first stages at home together. Birth doula Mary Giordano aims to build stronger community support for new families through the initiative after recognising a need. “I work with various families in my role and I regularly see a lack of support in the post-partum period,” she said. “I really want to help develop a sense of community for people around that period that can be challenging.” With a strong background in the community development sector, Ms Giordano moved to Kyneton from Melbourne one year ago and is keen to help build connections. The food train aims to encourage volunteer community cooks to help new families get the nourishment they need. New or expecting families can nominate themselves, or can be nominated by someone else for assistance. They provide details about special dietary requirements, number of people in the family, period for which they would like to receive meals, how much space they have for storing frozen meals and any special requests. “Community members can nominate themselves as participants of food trains willing to cook and deliver a wholesome meal for a nominated family at some point in the requested window,” Ms Giordano said. “Elders in the community and local businesses are also welcome to join the food train to support local families. People are welcome to prepare a one off dish to deliver, or to make multiple offerings over a given time frame. “No minimum is required – it’s really up to the individual how much they’d like to contribute.” Ms Giordano will coordinate the first stage of the initiative to avoid food wastage, families receiving lots of the same thing, or receiving too much at the same time with insufficient storage capacity. As the initiative grows she says further coordination support may be required. “My hope is that we will have more people willing to contribute to the making and delivering of meals than those in need at any given time so that it balances out in a sustainable way,” she said. Traffic lights and roundabout options are being explored to upgrade New Gisborne's Barringo and Hamilton Roads intersection. Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said both options were designed to improve safety and alleviate congestion as anticipated traffic volumes to the Sports Precinct increase. “Traffic projections estimate that the amount of vehicles travelling through this intersection is set to double by 2036, highlighting the need to realign and upgrade the existing intersection to help keep motorists, cyclists and pedestrians safe,” she said. The intersection upgrade will be the key gateway to the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct — a 15-hectare regional park that will provide sport and recreation facilities. Both options require a realignment of the Hamilton Road western approach to align with the eastern approach. Macedon Ranges Shire Council is seeking community feedback on the proposed design options by 5pm on September 30. All feedback will be presented to the council later this year. With the weather warming up, snakes are starting to emerge from their winter hibernation to bask in the sun and search for food and a mate. Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning senior wildlife management officer, Leila Brook, said people were starting to see snakes out and about in the region. “Snake species commonly found in Loddon Mallee include the eastern brown snake (Pseudonaja textilis), the red-bellied black snake (Pseudechis porphyriacus), and the tiger snake (Notechis scutatus)," Ms Brook said. “While these three species are venomous, it is rare for them to bite people. Most snake bites occur when people try to capture or kill a snake. “Snakes have been known to bite animals, such as dogs, if they feel threatened. 'If your dog or cat encounters a snake, the best course of action is to remove your pet from the area or tie it up while the snake passes and if you suspect your pet has been bitten take it to a vet immediately. “Snakes are generally very shy and prefer to keep away from people, and often when a snake is found in a backyard it’s because it’s moving through the area to other habitat.

“Snakes are more common around the urban fringe or in rural parts of Victoria, but they can also be found close to cities and towns, particularly around watercourses and parkland. “Whether you’re exercising outdoors or gardening, please be aware that snakes may be around, and make sure you’re informed about how to react to them if you encounter one." If you live in an area with snakes, remember: • When left alone, snakes present little or no danger to people. • If you see a snake, keep calm and move yourself and anyone with you (including pets) away from the area. • Don't attempt to capture or harm snakes. Instead call DELWP on 13 61 86 for further advice. • Maintain lawns and clean up around your house, as snakes are attracted to shelter such as piles of rocks and timber, sheets of metal, and building materials. • Undertake first aid training and ensure your first aid kit contains several compression bandages, and if someone is bitten, call 000 immediately. Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975 and it is illegal to harm or kill them or capture them without authority.

Macedon Regional Park remains closed (including Days Picnic area and Sanatorium Lake) until September 30 due to damage from the June 10 storm, with the exception of Cameron Drive, Harbison Picnic Ground and Top of the Range Tearooms. Closure signs have been installed at the entrance to walking tracks in addition to two visual messaging boards outlining park closures. The Cobaw Forest is also scheduled for opening later this month following the extensive clean up of the June storm damage there. In 2020 the winery was named the Macedon Ranges' Best Small Cellar Door, and in 2021 it has been recognised as Star Cellar Door. Their aim has always been to provide a genuine experience to all and to have their visitors enjoy every moment. So to have this acknowledged by this award was very gratifying to owners Renata Morello and Oliver Rapson. Jen Latta from Gourmet Traveller Wine says "everything at Lyons Will is done by hand and with a strong emphasis on sustainability. The ethos is simple: the more time spent in the vineyard, the less work to do in the cellar. The result? Good, honest wine with a great acid balance and a clean linear finish. Tastings are held inside the winery, located in the heart of the vineyards. . . It’s a totally immersive experience and about as close as you can get to where the action happens. The winery is the cellar door and the cellar door is in the vineyard. Being a family owned winery, you can chat first-hand with one of the winemakers while they take you through a selection of their wines. That’s how I’d like all my cellar door experiences to be." The cellar door at Lyons Will Estate is open on the second and fourth weekend of the month. The winery offers seated wine tasting experiences for $10 per person, or you can enjoy a tasting with a local produce platter for $35. Or just pop in for a glass or two!

Administrator of the Year

Trentham’s hard-working president Jason Shaw is the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball Club’s Administrator of the Year for 2021. He was selected due to his commitment to the Saints and specially the U17.5 football team, doing everything possible to ensure this team participated strongly each match. The league commended Shaw on being approachable and a pleasure to deal with. The MCDFNL’s presentation night took place online last week. In what has been an interrupted and challenging season, there was considerable interest in the individual on-field awards. Maldon’s Tommy Horne took out the Berry Powell Medal for best and fairest in the senior football, polling 16 votes. Trentham duo Joel Dovaston 13 and Zach Trentham’s Jason Shaw was named Administrator of the Year. Gervosini filled the minor placings, with Anthony Taylor (Talbot) fourth on 11 votes. Rookie of the Year was Darcy Kelly (Maldon). Lexton’s outstanding netballer Rachel Phelan took out the Nalder-Tracey Trophy for the league’s top netballer. In junior ranks Trentham’s dynamic young midfielder Danny Sutton polled 27 votes to tie with Freddy Davis (Avoca) and Harvey Rumff (Carisbrook) in the U11.5; Danny also played with the U14.5 Saints each round. Trentham held its major raffle draw at the weekend, with the winner being Jacob Pearce, a Saints’ sponsor and former captain.

Racing season begins Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club’s 2021-2022 season comprises 15 racing meetings, beginning today (Tuesday). The nine-race meeting will be the first at the Kyneton track since May 4, when local trainer Mick Sell won the final event on the program. Today’s meeting begins with the Hygain Maiden Plate over 1112m at 1pm, and concludes with the Prendergast Earthmoving BM58 Handicap over 1775m at 5pm. The 2020-2021 was certainly one with a major difference in the long history of the district club. Due to the impact of COVID-19, Kyneton Cup Day, sandwiched between the Melbourne Cup and Oaks Day at Flemington in November, had a very restricted attendance. Racing continued at Kyneton without the usual crowds, and even at this stage, there

are no guarantees the 2022 Cup Day will be back to normal.
