Santa touches down

Santa and his elves greeted more than 100 school children with Christmas gifts in Romsey last Thursday, delivered not by a sleigh but by a Powercor helicopter.

The visit was a way to say thanks to the community, which has supported Powercor’s aerial vegetation inspection and vegetation cutting programs throughout the year.

The helicopters have already begun flying their 2022 inspection cycle, as part of Powercor’s efforts to keep the electricity network safe and reliable.

The aircraft are fitted with advanced Light Detection and Ranging technology to scan for vegetation growing near to powerlines.

Powercor has completed its 2021 LiDAR flight schedule and is wasting no time starting the new season.

Weather permitting, the Bell 505 helicopters will be flying at an altitude of just over 300m, capturing enormous amounts of data to form a 3D image of powerlines across the region.

Powercor is responsible for the cutting and removal of trees near its 88,000km of powerlines within the boundaries of private properties and on public land, in order to maintain the required safe clearance space.

Turning waste to work Eve Lamb

A Castlemaine business is setting a groundbreaking example by re-using its industrial waste, reducing the volume of material going to landfill and creating a valuable new product to boot.

At its factory site in Castlemaine's Fitzgerald Close, Like Butter makes furniture and, keen to do the right thing by the environment, it recently started a trial using waste resulting from its manufacturing process to create garden compost.

Now, after many months of trialling cold composting of the waste – largely plywood sawdust but also glues – the test results are in and they're just what Like Butter's owners Jem Freeman and Laura Woodward had hoped for.

"We commissioned SESL Australia, a leading environmental science laboratory and consultancy service, to assess the results," says Jem, as he scoops up a handful of the friable result, writhing with worms and ready for use.

"One of our main interests was ensuring the safe break down of the adhesives used in plywoods, particularly formaldehyde-based glues.

"Our hope was that the fungi and bacteria would work its magic and consume, digest and then churn these chemicals into something safe for the environment and ultimately for productive use.

"The tests are back and they show that we produced a good quality compost suitable for a variety of uses including ornamental gardens.

"We have a little work to do with zinc and copper levels, only limiting the compost in high yield vegetable gardens used for daily consumption.

are used in fertilisers, and the levels detected were only marginally above standard, it may be that they were introduced via green waste rather than workshop waste.

"The glues were the big concern so it's a big win to know they're breaking down safely."

Armed with the positive report results, Laura says the next step now is to trial hot composting, potentially a far quicker process from input to end result.

"The next step is trialling hot composting to deal with volume," she says.

"The aim is to get close to zero waste."

The local business is particularly keen to partner with other like-minded local enterprises to further enhance its innovative

recycling efforts.

"We are open to partnering with others, perhaps a high green waste organisation to match the proportions of our timber waste, bringing together the two ingredients to create a viable volume at scale," Jem says.

While it's still comparatively early days, what they're doing is already being closely watched by manufacturers of other commercial goods from across Australia and further afield with enquiries in recent days including one from a cabinetmaking enterprise in New Zealand.

"We've got 18000 Instagram followers and also through our blog post, people are definitely watching what we're doing with interest," Laura says.

Double-storey rejected

Plans for six double-storey units at Gisborne have been knocked back.

Last week Macedon Ranges councillors voted against the development largely on the grounds of overdevelopment of the site and neighbourhood character.

The units were proposed for 35 Calthorpe Street, on land of about 2024m² at the end of a cul-de-sac, and attracted seven objections.

A Nissan SUV ended up on its roof after colliding with another car at Kyneton last Thursday.

A driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries following a two-vehicle collision at Kyneton last Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 11am, after a Nissan SUV collided with a Mitsubishi sedan on Batters Lane at the intersection of Pipers Creek Road.

The driver and sole occupant of the Nissan was taken to hospital for observation.

She will be issued with an infringement notice for failing to give way.

The female driver of the Mitsubishi was uninjured.

Photo: Brian Wilson, ietsystems.com.au A dangerous accident occurred on the Calder Freeway at Carlsruhe last Wednesday morning, which began with a car crashing into the wire rope barrier in the northbound lane and taking out 100 metres of it about 6.50am.

Police believe driver fatigue may have been involved in this initial incident.

While officers were on scene at that

collision, a ute approaching the scene about 100 metres away had slowed down in keeping with the law of not exceeding 40km/h when passing a scene attended by emergency services personnel. However, a car that failed to slow down slammed into the back of the ute about 7.30am.

The ute was shunted off its path and came to rest between the barrier and a

parked police car.

A woman trapped in the offending vehicle was cut from the car and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police, thankful that they themselves were not injured, would like to remind drivers to stay alert while driving, scan the road ahead and slow down when you see flashing lights.

Strict conditions now govern an 186070s Gisborne cottage slated for a BnB to prevent unapproved use as a dwelling.

Last week Macedon Ranges councillors tightened a permit to enable BnB operations by seeking removal of all kitchen plumbing.

The move was not an officer recommendation as part of the permit, but councillors wanted to further clarify the intent.

They also added conditions that stated the 600 Couangalt Road outbuilding must not be used as a separate dwelling and may only be rented on a short-term basis.

Leading the change, Cr Rob Guthrie felt there was need to tighten conditions.

He said there were alleged cases in the

shire of people using BnBs as long-term accommodation without approval, which were being investigated.

"Defining a BnB is very difficult," he said.

"The intent was to make very clear that it can't be used as a dwelling, it must be for short-term use only and the host must provide the breakfast."

Cr Jennifer Anderson said if a sink was allowed in the building it would then comply with the definition of a dwelling in the planning scheme.

"We need to make sure it's not misconstrued as a dwelling," she said. "I think it's a good compromise."

Standing conditions from the planning officers also included removal of the

loungeroom. But some councillors felt the restrictions went too far.

"I believe there are too many assumptions about possibilities going on rather than what's reality," Cr Geoff Neil said.

"We have to have faith in people to do the right thing... these conditions are too onerous and can be easily negated at VCAT, which will cost us / ratepayers money for pursuing frivolous requirements."

Cr Janet Pearce said the conditions were already clear in the planning officer's recommendation.

Those voting in support of the tightened conditions were: Crs Guthrie, Moore, Anderson, West, Bonanno and Death.

Those against were: Crs Neil and Pearce.

Mount Alexander Shire Council will tonight revisit a controversial proposal to develop an earthmoving contractor's depot at Muckleford after initially knocking back the application at its October meeting amid road safety concerns.

But the matter is back on the agenda for this evening's December council meeting after the original decision of refusal was rescinded at last month's meeting.

The council at its October meeting had rejected a planning application to develop the depot at Muckleford amid concerns about possible road safety impacts on the Castlemaine-Maldon Road, the scene of several fatalities to date.

The application sought to develop and use a depot at 315 Butchers Road, Muckleford – situated off the CastlemaineMaldon Road.

It had drawn 25 objections with concerns raised by neighbouring landholders including potential impacts on surrounding farming practices, fire risk and traffic impacts with the proposed site within the farming zone and subject to the council's Significant Landscape Overlay.

But at last month's council meeting, Cr Christine Henderson successfully moved a motion rescinding the October decision of refusal after learning of additional information relating to road sight lines, which she believed important in determining whether to approve the application.

The intersection of Butchers Road and Maldon-Castlemaine Road at Muckleford.

Proposed works at the intersection will be among key aspects considered in council decision making around an earthmoving contractor’s depot.

"For several councillors, the stated decision to support the motion to refuse a permit hinged on traffic conditions," Cr Henderson said.

"It was felt that the Department of Transport conditions included in the report's recommended conditions for approval might not be adequate for the safety of traffic travelling along the Castlemaine-Maldon Road.

"Subsequent to the meeting, I have learned that additional information from the final Traffic Impact Assessment Report document was not made readily

available to all councillors during briefing discussions, nor was it captured in the final officer report that was tabled at the council meeting," Cr Henderson said.

Also attracting a keen degree of community interest at this evening's meeting, the council will be tasked with deciding whether to lease land at Wesley Hill Recreation Reserve to Optus to build a telecommunications facility, and whether to continue with the sale of the old Wesleyan church property and former community centre property at 205 Main Road, Chewton.

Located at the front of the station, the garden was a combined effort of members including removal of hazardous trees and careful planning and design.

The garden also offers the community landscaping ideas in one of the most dangerous regions in Australia.

Landscaping for bushfire involves planning, designing, planting and managing the area around a house.

This incorporates five key principles: create defendable spaces, remove flammable objects from around the house, break up fuel continuity, careful selection and location of the plants within the garden, and regular maintenance of garden and interface with house.

Other key considerations in the design included: no flammable objects close to the eaves or roofline, no overhanging or bark-shedding trees, non-flammable hardscaping: steel edging, wide gravel paths and gravel mulch, and short, well-maintained areas of lawn.

The CFA publication Landscaping for Bushfire helped inform the choice of plants and guided members on spacing and arrangement.

Factoring in the various fire-wise principles, the plant list for the brigade's garden includes: a single smooth-barked tree with an open canopy and no lower branches, well-spaced shrubs and ground covers, few fine-leafed or very dense plant species, few resinous or waxy plants, few plants that drop or retain dead material, a mixture of native and exotic plants, and plants to attract birds, butterflies and other pollinators.

The brigade was successful in gaining a grant for the project through the ANZ Bank Seeds of Renewal program. The remainder of the project was funded by the brigade.

Meeting labelled a sham

Campaspe River landowners have labelled a Coliban Water community meeting held via zoom last week a "sham".

The meeting was advertised as being held to discuss a proposed Environment Protection Authority licence amendment in relation to discharges of wastewater from the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant to the river, but participants were not given any detail of what was proposed.

Currently Coliban Water has a licence that allows it to discharge excess wastewater from the plant to the river at a dilution ration of 1:5, but the waterflow is measured at Redesdale – almost 50 kilometres downstream from the discharge point.

After two years of negotiations with affected landowners calling for the waterflow to be measured at Kyneton, Coliban Water agreed to do so but admitted a reduced dilution ratio would be required in order for it to meet the licence requirements.

Local landowner Sallyanne Craig said Coliban Water’s refusal to disclose any facts about the licence application precluded the meeting from being able to be considered a consultation or discussion.

"The EPA has given Coliban Water March as the deadline to begin accurate river flow measurements at point of dumping," Ms Craig said.

"So they are attempting to fast-track their amendment application – the one they refuse to provide any facts/correspondence about – seeking a chronic poisoning that will keep them out of court but will continue harming the river.

"It’s a little river, with absolutely no capacity to do what is being required of it as a wastewater dump.

"Coliban Water must be pressured to drag their thinking into the present future.

The public nuisance that is occurring downstream due to their inaction is wiping millions off livelihoods."

Tree chop planned

New Gisborne residents have been notified of 197 tree removals expected to take place as the Macedon Ranges Regional Sports Precinct progresses.

The $41.4 million sports precinct project incorporates sports fields and an indoor sports hub across two sites at the intersection of Barringo and Hamilton Roads.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council notified residents earlier this month of its application for a planning permit at the Hamilton Road site.

Ten of the trees marked for removal are of 'moderate significance': four mature exotics (three radiata pine and one monterey cypress), three semi-mature swamp gum and three mature black wattle understorey trees. An additional large pine and mature elm of moderate significance will require removal if the signals and road widening works are required for the project. The remaining trees flagged for removal have been listed as 'low significance'. This includes 167 immature understorey trees (162 black wattle and five blackwood), two mature radiata pine and 12 immature swamp gum canopy trees.

One dead swamp gum canopy tree and three hazardous large dead blackwood understorey trees were also listed for removal.

Two mature swamp gums ranked of 'high significance' will be retained and 29 of the 39 trees of 'moderate significance' can be protected.

Objections and submissions can be made to the application (PLN/2021/513) via the council's website.

Practical actions

The Macedon and Hepburn Regional Adaptation Strategy is one of six across Victoria to provide practical ways for local communities to adapt to the impacts of climate change through on-ground action.

Themes across the strategies include emergency preparation and recovery, natural environment care, boosting health and wellbeing, improving the economy and embracing renewable energy.

Local communities will lead the implementation of this five-year strategy and priorities for action will reflect the unique story of the region. As part of implementation, five on-ground community led projects will begin this financial year to help local communities prepare and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Projects include: Expanding the Hepburn Z-NET Model into Climate Change Adaptation: Hepburn Shire Council This project aims to leverage and expand on the Hepburn Z-NET mitigation model to develop an approach to climate change adaptation that is place-based and locally appropriate. It will provide a replicable process for other regional local government areas.

Trentham Food Hub Feasibility Study: Trentham Sustainability Group This project will develop a business case for a centrally located facility to aggregate, store, process, distribute, and/or market locally/regionally produced food products.

As well as contributing to the region’s ZNet transition by actively supporting climate adaptive agriculture, the Trentham Food Hub will encourage artisanal food sector and regional food processors to operate their businesses in a climate-adaptive way, by promoting and selling their products specifically due to their climate responsive practices.

Climate Ready Radio Broadcasting: Central Vic Community Radio Promote the Climate Ready Plan to the maximum number of people in the Loddon Mallee region and to include the Loddon Mallee people in the production of the program content.

The project will produce a weekly one-hour program for radio about climate change in the Loddon Mallee to be broadcast over Central Victorian Community Radio and made available to all 460 community radio stations in Australia via the community radio network.

Off-grid Relief and Recovery Centres Feasibility Study and Business Case: Macedon Ranges Shire Council This project will assess the feasibility of the Macedon Community Centre, Riddells Creek Leisure Centre, and Romsey Recreation Centre to be off-grid and thereby establishing self-sufficient community facilities that can be utilised as relief, recovery and 'hot day out' centres in the event essential services such as electricity and water are cut off as a result of a natural disaster, heat wave or emergency.

Elphinstone Resilient Landscape: Elphinstone Landcare This project would bring a community care approach to Elphinstone’s local creek aiming to test strategies to manage weeds at creek edge, reconnect community to the local creek and gather data on vegetation changes and biodiversity using a citizen science approach.

Consultation with an ecologist will guide what data will be collected, and guidance will be sought from local Dja Dja Wurrung Elders on priorities and approaches in management and planting.

Ongoing community care of the site will facilitate reduction of bushfire risk and increase riparian habitat.

MP shows support for facility’s plight

Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters has taken a keen interest in the financial plight of community owned Kyneton aged care provider RM Begg.

The federal Labor MP has met with interim CEO Trevor Watson and board chair Phillip Irvine for a briefing on the facility's financial position.

She again visited the not-for-profit facility last Tuesday and enjoyed a morning tea with residents.

Ms Chesters told residents that she was also once a local Kyneton resident who had lived in the town for several years.

She reassured residents that she understood the problems faced by RM Begg, and how important the organisation was in the local community.

Resident Tim Collins presented her with a video that described the history of the home since its inception in the 1950s.

Acting CEO Trevor Watson said the federal MP confirmed her support for the recommendations of Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety around minimum staffing levels, and said she would be discussing RM Begg's plight with federal Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing, Mark Butler MP. Mr Watson said RM Begg needed a substantial cash injection to continue operating under the current model, and that low interest rates and insufficient government funding relative to staff cost increases had made the home’s future uncertain.

The board is currently exploring several options to ensure RM Begg can keep operating, including possible partnerships.

"We have received some very generous donations from the community, for which we are very grateful," Mr Watson said.

"We are doing all that we can to secure a sustainable future for RM Begg, so that it can continue to provide excellent care to its much-loved residents."

Macedon Ranges Council has celebrated seniors who have demonstrated active ageing or promoted a positive image of older people.

The council honoured local seniors through gifting a ‘celebration box’ containing a selection of delicious goodies from local businesses.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson congratulated all the successful nominees who have made significant and diverse contributions to the local community.

Among the recipients were Kyneton Senior Citizens Club's Marj and Ray Williams who have kept the club running during COVID. They have also implemented a range of strategies to stay in touch with members.

Ken Rose was recognised for his work driving people to and from their medical appointments during the COVID pandemic.

RM Begg Auxiliary president Rosemary Bain helped to raise $27,000 last year for the aged-care facility through stalls and garage sales.

Kyneton’s Social Foundry hosted an awareness raising morning for the Zonta Club of Kyneton’s 16 days of activism campaign.

The message is simple The 2021 United Nations' 16 days of activism anti-violence campaign is over for another year.

The Zonta Club of Kyneton hopes that the vital reminders and messages this campaign generated will assist community members to better understand the importance of being a bystander for a person living with violence.

Acting Senior Sergeant Eddie Barake at Romsey police station said that if a person had no family or friends close by and was a victim of violence, they were unlikely to report their perpetrator.

"Violence in relationships is complex. A victim can believe they have no option but to put up with abuse as they don’t see any alternative," Sen-Sgt Barake said.

"There are many pathways out of domestic and family violence, the police do

not have to be the first port of call.

"Someone who has been raped can go to a hospital for an examination and then work out what to do next."

Sen-Sgt Barake said bystanders could start the journey of supporting a victim from the position of what was possible.

"Start where you can, it’s a journey. Putting prosecution to one side we can advise and refer a person to specialist agencies," he said.

Zonta spokesperson Christine Jessup said she hoped the 16 days of activism had highlighted the role of the community bystander.

"Our objective has been to value this role, which might begin with just asking someone if they are okay," Ms Jessup said.

"The message is simple. If you witness

violence it is not a private matter – people in such circumstances need help.

"Calling the police where violence is witnessed is not interfering. It may be the act that helps a family break the cycle.

"This year what we have learnt absolutely for certain is that if someone confides in you, you can listen without judgement; you can believe; and you can ask that person how you can help.

"Knowing what resources are available in the community enables any of us to point a victim of violence in the right direction.

"Perhaps the most important message of all is that domestic, family and sexual abuse and violence affects everyone involved: the perpetrator, the victim, their children and extended family and friends.

"We dressed in orange and shared our stories. We even had four-legged supporters!"

Bolinda Primary School and Langley Primary School have secured state government maintenance funding for roof works.

Bolinda has been allocated $20,000 and Langley has been allocated $80,000 for high priority maintenance tasks identified in the school's specialist assessment to address roof issues. The schools are among 94 others to receive funding for improvements to classrooms and schoolgrounds.

Egg-citing milestone!

Egg-entrepreneur Josh Murray has achieved a major milestone. The ethical free-range egg business he started as a nine-year-old has given away its millionth egg to charity and is hoping to ramp up that figure.

“Traditionally eggs had never been donated to charity,” says Josh, who is the face of the Macedonbased ethical free-range egg production business, Josh’s Rainbow Eggs.

“This is largely because nothing goes to waste in the industry with cracked or small eggs either going into pasteurisation or used for other purposes.”

Four years ago Josh and his mother, Dr Tamsyn Murray, now CEO of the business, made a conscious decision to make giving eggs an intrinsic part of their business model with five per cent of total production now going to food charities.

“We wanted to make sure that families in need – especially children – were receiving the nutrition they deserved," Tamsyn said.

Each week around 25 organisations across metropolitan and regional Vic, including FoodShare, OzHarvest, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Camcare and food collectives and neighbourhood houses, receive donations of eggs from Josh’s Rainbow Eggs.

To date tens of thousands of struggling families have benefitted from this generosity.

“On top of what we already donate to charity, we are calling on Victorians to help us donate even more eggs to families struggling over Christmas," Josh said.

"For every dozen eggs people gift to those in need, we will match with an additional dozen.

“People can go direct to our website and gift eggs, or they can scan the QR code on the inside of our egg cartons and this will take them to our website.”

With their final fundraiser for the year now in the rear view mirror, the Macedon Ranges Rural Australians for Refugees look back on a highly successful 12 months.

Funds raised from their many activities were forwarded to refugee organisations, including the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project and Refugee Legal.

Secretary Kerry Bull has been amazed by the good will of locals.

She reserved a special thank you for Woodend Community Bags and the CWA, and for the sponsors of their most recent raffle.

Prizes were donated by All Seasons Resort Hotel, Bendigo, as well as both Woodend and Gisborne Golf Clubs.

Hyde’s Quality Dry Cleaners of Gisborne gifted a generous voucher and a tasty wine pack was provided by four local wineries: Domaine Epis, Mount Macedon, Gisborne Peak and Granite Hills.

In addition to fundraisers, the group has taken donations of furniture and appliances and run several grocery collections at the Coles supermarket in Woodend.

"Our last one was a great success," Kerry said.

"Shoppers contributed an item or two and in many cases, more!"

These were delivered to Friends of Refugees in Springvale, to be distributed among the refugee community.

"Refugees need our help because many are forbidden, by law, to work," Kerry said.

"Official assistance is insufficient. We also have a couple of families that we help with school books, uniforms and significant household expenses."

Kerry acknowledged the pandemic did have an impact on the group’s activities,

"We’ve got some great projects scheduled," she said.

"We also have Mark Chew visiting in the middle of the year. He’s an outstanding photographer who’s done a lot of work with the UNHCR. He’ll be giving an exhibition of his work and talking about

his experiences working in refugee camps in Africa and Asia.

"Christine Cummins is another of our guests for 2022. She’s the author of Dignity in a Teacup, based on her five years as a torture and trauma counsellor on Christmas Island."

Kerry said there were other projects in the pipeline and details would be announced as they were set in place.

"We’ve got new people coming on board with fresh ideas and plenty of enthusiasm – 2022 will be a great year!"

Bridge fight to planning panel The fight to protect Gisborne's Bunjil Creek bridge, bluestone channel and significant trees will progress to an independent planning panel.

Last week Macedon Ranges Council revealed the Department of Transport had denied any heritage value of these features that are threatened as intersection works on Kilmore Road continue.

The $12.5 million upgrade was a Labor election promise aiming to improve traffic flow and pedestrian crossings.

Council strategic planner Leanne Khan told councillors the department was the sole objector to a heritage overlay planned for the site that would provide protection.

"It was on the grounds that the department had undertaken its own heritage assessment, which does not identify heritage value on the bridge channel or surrounding trees," she said.

Earlier this year, Regional Roads Victoria reneged on an in-principle agreement with the council to protect the bridge, channel and trees.

RRV stated a 'bridge over bridge' solution was no longer viable due to ground conditions and flood risks.

Seven other submissions supported the heritage overlay plan. The Gisborne and

Mount Macedon Districts Historical Society gave heavy endorsement.

The historical society submitted a proposal to protect the bridge using a series of concrete encased pilings on which a steel structure could be built to support the road base to keep the bluestone structure intact.

At last week's council meeting, Cr Rob Guthrie said this option and others "should be seriously considered".

FLOOD STUDY HISTORY

Cr Guthrie said council action in the past could have significantly improved flood risk in Gisborne.

He said Macedon Ranges Council adopted a flood study of Gisborne in 2006 that was to be implemented into the planning scheme but stated that it never was.

"It recommended a number of actions including a retarding basin above Fersfield Road. We purchase the land – nothing's been done about it. No retarding basin," he said.

"There is potential that during a flood event, flood waters can build up behind Howey Street and that the embankment may fail.... this could have devastating consequences.

"The study recommended that the coun-

The Victorian Government is urging parents and carers of young children to shop carefully this Christmas and ensure their presents are age appropriate and safe.

Inspectors from Consumer Affairs Victoria seized 368 unsafe toys from shelves in the lead up to Christmas due to small parts that pose a choking hazard to children.

Toys being crushed and destroyed included numerous dolls with small and unsecured battery compartments, and items that failed labelling standards.

Consumer Affairs Victoria has powers to prosecute businesses who sell unsafe items, with penalties of up to $10 million for traders who fail to meet their legal responsibilities.

Romsey Ecotherapy Park will be enriched by local artworks and sculptures and is a step closer to completion.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas visited the park's construction site this month and met with Lancefield artist Brigit Heller who is one of six contributing to the project.

The Victorian Government has invested more than $1.5 million towards the threestage project, supporting a long-held community vision. The Romsey community has raised funds towards locally produced ‘Art in the Park’ pieces.

There will be a range of artworks featured throughout the site, including a portal statue, sculpted by Brigit Heller, which will be installed at the entrance of the park.

Earthworks are well under way on the project’s second and third stages, which

includes a sensory therapeutic space and an arts and culture space featuring sound and scent focused garden beds, a water feature along with a visitor car park and the Woodland Ramble space which offers hut building activities.

Ms Thomas said it was an exciting project for the Macedon Ranges.

"This has been a long-held community vision and I am so pleased to see it getting closer to reality – our dedicated volunteers and community members should be commended for their efforts," she said.

The project’s first stage was completed in 2018 and has been open to visitors. It features a nature play space and climbing forest.

The completed park is expected to open next year.

Good news for cinephiles Theatre Royal Castlemaine and ACMI, Australia’s national museum of screen culture, are thrilled to announce a partnership for ACMI-curated films to screen in Castlemaine.

Launching the month after next, cinephiles will be able to watch films from ACMI’s popular matinees program at Castlemaine’s historic Theatre Royal every Tuesday evening in what will be known as 'ACMI Tuesdays'.

An ACMI Indies series will also screen on selected Tuesdays and weekends throughout the summer. "Considering the historic significance of our venue, a partnership with our national film museum feels like a natural fit. We can’t wait to welcome the ACMI audience to our unique cinema," Felicity says.

Ghita Loebenstein, head of cinema at ACMI, says their cinemas at Fed Square are overflowing with excellent programming and they are thrilled to share a curated selection with The Theatre Royal.

Parents can hang out in the other room and have a cuppa and do some mindfulness drawing or resting.

"Children often find it comforting to bring in a dog, kitten or lamb into the session while we are getting started," Sky says.

"Each person is different. Sometimes the work I do is heavily arts based, with the making of plasticine figures, drawing, or using drama therapy techniques.

"Sometimes I work by creating a safe and compassionate space to talk and be listened to. I teach psychoeducation of stress and trauma and how our bodies manage our experience. I offer clients readings or clips to watch online to further their understanding."

Sky also runs nature-walk workshops where participants walk the beautiful 40acre block at Metcalfe and respond to the environment and seed questions.

There is time for drawing, writing and sharing around the processes of responding to nature and each person’s sense of self and awareness," she says.

Sky is a registered psychotherapist, a registered teacher and is studying a Master of Social Work.

She is currently taking new clients and will be running groups online and in person in 2021/22.

The festive season can be a real challenge for people with weight-loss problems.

"It is the time of year when all our best intentions of eating wisely tend to disappear and we end up putting on more weight, which is harder than ever to get rid of again," says Marianne Pattinson of Kyneton Hypno Therapies.

Yet again Coliban Water has subjected the Campaspe River community, below the Kyneton Water Reclamation Plant dump zone, to another Talk Fest with no desire to share how they wish to have their licence reviewed.

The EPA requires CW to have their discharge licence reviewed. We have sent parameters we consider will protect the river. None of our suggestions were mentioned during the meeting.

CW brought about a zoom meeting that was poorly advertised and if it wasn’t due to a last-minute phone around no one would have attended.

Those who did zoom in wanted to hear what CW were proposing, what we got was the same old drivel, i.e. "we are working with the best science available to protect the river". Probably the same science that saw them convicted for polluting the river earlier this year.

When water levels in our reservoirs were at their lowest in the millennium drought, the state government allowed or made CW borrow $300m plus to put a pipeline from Waranga Basin to Eppalock.

This is a great investment for the future of Bendigo but was this money well spent when you consider it has not been used?

CW has run the facility since the early 80s, barring the recent spend, no land has been acquired, an overhead irrigation system installed. The main investment made to the plant was the Biological Nutrient Removal Plant that was commissioned around 2005? The population impacting on the plant has more than tripled.

We know this is a difficult problem to overcome, we know it won’t happen overnight. But we question if what has been done will protect the river. If CW is so confident the recent investments will protect the river let’s make sure the licence reflects that.

It really is that simple, so spare us the spin and let’s protect the river from further degradation. Otherwise admit the shortcomings of the system and admit that the only way to protect the environment is to produce a higher quality of water.

The state government was happy for CW to borrow $300m to ensure Bendigo’s water supply, now it’s time for the state government to protect the Campaspe River.

The concerns about wildlife road kill expressed by Patrick Francis ('Difficult to reconcile', Opinions, December 14) is a direct outcome of increased human density across the Macedon Ranges and Australia as a whole.

More people, more cars/more consumption inevitably results in habitat loss locally and globally.

The desire for economic growth is a key driver for species decline and often eventual extinction. Most of the electorate have consistently voted for 'jobs and growth' in Australia and in the short term that is unlikely to change.

Finally, I would not blame local councils – they are creatures of governments operating within a growth-oriented system that most electors expect to continue. That will not change without open discussion about what sort of future is sustainable for life on a finite planet.

Why are there no disabled parking spaces on High, Mollison and Piper Streets in Kyneton?

There are spaces at the Woolworths end of Baynton Street and in the supermarket’s parking area, in the IGA car park, behind the Town Hall, and in the car park adjacent to the Air Cadets hall in Market Street – but one can hardly expect visitors to our town to easily find them.

How about it, Macedon Ranges Shire Council? What about at least two disabled car parks in each of High and Mollison Streets, and four in Piper Street, our major tourist drag – two between Mollison and Ebden Streets and two between Ebden and Wedge Streets?

Finally, the two electric car charging points behind the Town Hall are great for locals, but not much use for tourists.

How about one convenient charging point in either Piper or Mollison Street?

Glass recycling?

Margaret Grey, Castlemaine I write regarding Rosemary Taylor's letter about appropriate bins for recycling ('Easy recycling system', Opinions, December 7).

Could someone please advise where specifically glass can be recycled in the Castlemaine area?

If we put glass in the yellow-lidded bins, it breaks and gets mixed up with paper and plastic, which is dangerous for those working to sort the bins' contents, and I believe it is better to recycle glass separately for further reprocessing.

Enough is enough Rosemary Taylor, Castlemaine Everyone agrees that being in lockdown in our own homes during the COVID crisis has been tough on our mental health, so imagine how Julian Assange's mental health has been damaged by the years he's been in lockdown.

What further evidence is needed before he can be released and returned home to Australia? Surely he has suffered enough, and for reporting the truth, remember – the truth?

Think of one of those pictures where you think you are looking at a rabbit, but suddenly you see a duck. And once you see the duck, you cannot unsee it.

So it is with our world right now. Think of the public health people and epidemiologists. They go to university wanting to learn how to do good in the world, to bring their intellect to the solving of real world problems for the benefit of all.

They spend years studying all manner of plagues, catastrophic and creeping, and formulating ‘measures’ that could halt or mitigate the effects. And help it has. The world could have been overwhelmed by an Ebola pandemic with a death rate approaching 90 per cent several times over the past two decades, and it was only the stringent application of public health measures (isolation, education and so forth), and more recently a vaccine, that prevented this.

But look again. Now we have an electronic system to separate the clean from the unclean, a tracking system that few of us really believe will be fully wound back. One minute we are looking at social controls essential to our health. The next

we are looking at a fascist wet dream of instantaneous electronic surveillance (News flash – you’ve had that in your pocket for years).

On the other hand, those who have politely declined a vaccine thought that they were upholding the sanctity and purity of their bodies and their human right to choose. I doubt that even the most ardent and committed vaccine-decliner would deny that the anti-vax community is a broad church. At risk of sounding partisan, I would have to say that some of it is distinctly kooky, but I suppose there have always been prophets on soapboxes. So we might forgive some of our sillier friends their excesses (All the vaccinated people are going to die, anyone?)

Maybe they thought they were making a stand against creeping corporatism and the dreaded 'Big Pharma'?

But look again, and you might see a goat. You might see an outbreak of toxic individualism. My individual right trumps your right to a safe society.

Or worse. Erstwhile luminaries such as David Holmgren have pegged out positions that are at best eco-fascist-adjacent, espousing ideas such as that people who die of COVID more or less deserve it for being unhealthy (or poor?), and then drifting into some very questionable neo-social-Darwinist nonsense suggesting that the unvaccinated are somehow doing us all a favour through some unspecified evolutionary mechanism.

It gets worse ‘below the line’, where Holmgren claims that vaccinated people are more likely to be the source of variants. This is either a gross misunderstanding of his source, or just dishonest.

The same luminary might not have believed, had you told him three years ago, that he would march with yoga teachers and rickety old hippies alongside neo-Nazis in protest against a grab-bag of concerns, some of which might be valid.

And they say that you are judged by the company you keep.

Christmas in Castlemaine missing Val McKendry, Campbells Creek Christmas only comes once a year but this year there are no decorations, nothing for the families with young children, not even a Christmas tree. There is plenty of room in the Village Square for a tree.

Years ago Castlemaine came alive on Christmas Eve with Santa at the Market Building steps handing lollies to the young children and there was also entertainment.

Families enjoyed their time there then went home to bed to awaken the next morning to see what Santa had left.

For me it was the highlight every year.

Grandpas, grandmas, mums, dads, brothers and sisters made it a great family night.

I feel that the council has let us down, COVID has definitely changed things but we still have to pay our rates so surely council could have put a bit back to the community. Much money has been put into the Village Square, tables, chairs, shade cloth and bands for the older generation, but there are a lot of families with young children that should be catered for as well.

The End Of 2021: Results Like No Other AS the 2021 year closes, it will be remembered as one of the most active ever for the Macedon Ranges real estate market, and probably one like no other in recent memory, with sales across the Macedon Shire continuing to surprise.

The year began with local and out of town buyers fresh out of the 2020 lockdowns and a market fueled by highly motivated buyers making snap lifestyle and work-related decisions.

The record low cost of debt combined with an unprecedented amount of government support extended the financial capacity of buyers.

An abundance of buyers competing for historically low numbers of properties created windfall value rises for Macedon Ranges property owners. Buyers simply had more credit available to them, and those who had sold in the Spring of 2020, or the first quarter of 2021 were reentering the market with deeper pockets.

Auctions on site (when possible) and online emerged as the best strategy for realizing the best prices with bidders lining up 3, 5, sometimes 8 deep on many properties and clearance rates exceeding 90% across the board.

Lockdowns and the fear of missing out (FOMO) prompted record numbers of buyers to buy without a physical inspection of the property. It is pleasing that of the 19 sales conducted this year by our agency, without a buyer inspecting prior, not one client has expressed dissatisfaction with their remote purchase.

Paradoxically, despite record prices being achieved, the reluctance of property owners to sell has never been more evident this past year.

State government restrictions outside of Victoria barring entry have been a big contributor to this, with many would-be vendors expressing frustration at not being able to venture interstate to view properties: “If I sell where can I go and what if I can’t get into the market quickly again?” was a common malaise this year.

In addition, we know some property owners are simply delaying their selling decisions while continuing to ride a wave of increasing capital values. In the background we know some are simply postponing their sale, but once they see evidence of a slowdown or an increase in the supply of properties, they will put their properties on the market.

Common reasons for selling this year remain fairly typical: up/ downsizing, work changes, ageing, estate planning, relocation and the freeing up of equity.

Like in any capital market, in the past we have experienced volumes of properties for sale going from undersupply to an oversupply quite quickly and it is this backlog of would-be sellers who have kicked the proverbial can down the road on whether to sell, that can cause the supply/demand pendulum to swing quickly.

Certainly, frustrated buyers who are yet to find a home are hoping for that to happen in 2022.

And what about 2022? Foreseeably, the next major influence on Australian markets will be the reopening of international borders, with the first international student intake in a while, arriving recently.

Economists are tipping the 2021 surge should be followed by more moderate growth in the new year, although we should recall that following the unprecedented effects of the pandemic throughout 2020, many economists tipped 2021 to be a dark year for real estate growth!

Instead, we've seen staggering gains in just about every city and state.

The final rate of national growth for the year is expected to be around +22 per cent, the largest annual jump since 1989.

In conclusion, though historically the industry would slow down at this time of year, since Covid, the market has been far less influenced by 'traditional' seasons. With lockdown really changing the ways in which we transact properties, many vendors are opting for a newer approach to selling their homes be it through shorter campaigns, online auctions or off market sales.

Whilst we can expect a little bit of a hiatus over Christmas, right now could be the perfect time to get ahead and prepare your home for a mid-January sale, given market activity and competition will undoubtedly increase after the festive season.

Say goodbye 2021, bring on 2022 U3A Kyneton's final function for the year was held at the Malmsbury Reservoir.

Despite strong winds, everyone had a great time in a picturesque environment for such an occasion.

U3A Kyneton thanks all its tutors for their wonderful and dedicated work during such a difficult year.

Courses are currently being developed for 2022 and enrolment day is January 14, 2022 at the Red Brick Hall Kyneton.

Online enrolments are open from January 10, 2022.

More than 40 courses are on offer in the first semester of 2022, with something for everyone.

Lifeline Central Victoria and Mallee has a new training centre in Bendigo’s CBD. Thanks to the assistance provided by Lisa Chesters MP, through the $10,000 Stronger Communities Grant, the new office has been painted and fitted out. Additionally, carpet and office furniture were kindly donated by the Bendigo Bank.

This new training centre will enable Lifeline Central Victoria and Mallee to recruit and train a further 30 volunteers each year for the 13 11 14 hotline call centre and deliver an additional 10 community-focused, mental health and suicide prevention workshops.

Lifeline Central Victoria and Mallee has a team of accredited trainers who deliver domestic violence awareness, suicide intervention and mental health first aid training throughout the region. The programs are often fully funded by partners and organisations who align with Lifeline’s purpose, however they also provide workplace and corporate training too.

Last year 64 dedicated volunteer crisis supporters, generously gave over 4500 hours and answered 11,229 calls, for central Victoria and Mallee residents.

Call volumes have increased significantly in the past year, Lifeline nationally has seen a 35 per cent increase in calls being received compared to pre-pandemic times.

Calls from Victorians increased 52 per cent in the past 12 months, well above the state’s population growth. Lifeline’s 13 11 14 hotline is a key part of the mental health system in Victoria.

“We can now train more volunteers each year and for every volunteer who trains with us, we can provide crisis support to an additional 312 help seekers,” said Lisa Renato, executive officer with Lifeline Central Victoria and Mallee.

The new centre was officially opened by Bendigo MP Lisa Chesters.

“Increasing access to mental health and suicide prevention supports in our region is vital," Ms Chesters said.

"The federal government’s support of Lifeline’s new centre will ensure more central Victorians can get the support they need, when they need it most.”

Trentham Broadford in bowling upsets Bill West

Down-the-ladder teams Trentham and Broadford injected new life into Highlands division one pennant bowls by defeating respective opponents Romsey and Lancefield on Saturday.

As teams break for the holiday recess after the completion of eight rounds, the top four sides are Gisborne 95 points, Lancefield 93, Kyneton Golf 91 and Romsey 91.

Then there is a big gap to Trentham 68, Kyneton 65, Kilmore 62, Broadford 47 and Diggers Rest 28.

There were good signs for Trentham in the previous round, and Romsey found the ‘Spud Diggers’ in a determined mode.

Bernie Halpin’s four inflicted a rare defeat on Damien Elly, and Corey McKeone also won, making up for Norm Cooke’s eclipse at the hands of the ultra-consistent Cameron Austin.

The match went right down to the last end, with Trentham players elated with the outcome.

Lancefield struggled on the synthetic surface at Broadford, with the home side well ahead at the halfway mark.

Overall Broadford won by 15 shots, and a whitewash was avoided when Jeff Holmes and Bernie Shannon excelled to come

back from a 10 shot deficit and win by five.

Broadford president Jim Hinchcliffe said the club is enjoying its first season in Highlands and the opportunity to play at different venues.

At home, Gisborne found Kilmore extremely competitive, with the visitors winning two rinks.

Once again Ethan Higgins’ crew was the difference, this time having a 12-shot margin.

The purported match of the round between arch rivals Kyneton Golf and Kyneton was a fizzer, with the home side gaining maximum points.

GOLF, ROMSEY TIE The closest match of the round came in second division, with a thrilling 48-48 tie between Kyneton Golf and Romsey. Colin Scott’s four had a seven-shot margin.

Macedon romped home by 30 shots at home to Kyneton in the biggest margin of the round.

Many clubs are taking the opportunity to play club championship events over the holiday period.

They are the first Kilmore players to take a title in Highlands (formerly Central Highlands) and with Broadford, he two new clubs are making their presence felt.

Semi-finals and final were laid on the Kyneton green.

Mayberry and Young defeated Kyneton’s Keith Reaper and Peter Cameron (s) 13-7 in the final.

Come and try croquet While many sports seem to take a break in the holidays, Kyneton Croquet Club is gearing up to welcome new players.

Beginning on Monday January 10, the club will have five weeks of 'Come and Try' croquet sessions.

The sessions will be held on Monday nights from 6-7pm at the club lawns on the corner of Ebden and Donnithorne streets.

Everyone is welcome to come and learn a sport that requires skill, concentration and a lot of strategic planning.

Men and women play on equal terms in croquet and it can be played by people of all ages.

Kyneton Croquet Club is particularly keen to encourage junior players to come and have a go.

All equipment is provided and experienced players will be on hand to help out players completely new to the sport.

GOLF results

Kyneton Golf Club’s Jason, Jesper, David and Greg enjoy a well-earned drink at the end of their 72 holes.

Kyneton The annual 72-hole fundraiser for the Cancer Council was held at Kyneton course on Saturday.

Jason McClure, Jesper Hansen, David Moore and Gregory Robinson finished at around 5.30pm, welcoming a well earned drink.

The final amount raised is still being tallied.

Stableford resulted in countbacks were close in all grades.

Lancefield Captain Jason Byron spreadeagled the field to take off the stableford championship conducted over 54 holes.

His final 18 on Saturday produced 39 points, and a tally of 111 points. Runner-up with 102 points was John Leefe and Malcolm Ive and Barry Flentjar finished equal third on 101.

Saturday’s individual winner was Stewart Stevens (21) with 40 points, on a countback from club champion Trevor Lambert (1).

There was a tremendous turnout for the final Legends event of the year last Tuesday, with prizes for unusual challenges and plenty of fun. Wayne Mee excelled with 45 points to earn a handicap reduction.

The ladies held their Christmas celebrations at the splendid Parkside Winery on Wednesday, with food, service and wines excellent. Wednesday twilight (10 holes): Denis Linehan 22 points.

Mount Macedon The Ranges Medical December monthly medal was at stake on Saturday, with Tony Littman a clear cut winner.

From a field of 31, he was the only one to score better than his handicap with 77-11-66. Peter Palmer was the B-grade winner with 9-7-27-70.

Trentham On Saturday B-grader Michael Hogan hung on to card a 36-hole nett tally of 131 (61 and 70) to take out the Summer Cup. The day’s best round came from Scott Batty 82-20-62 and a 132 aggregate, one shot behind Hogan.

Gary Middleton 82-13-69 edged out Garry Ford 79-10-69 in A-grade, Colin Salmon 79-64-64 was runner-up in B-grade, while Ross Jackson 94-22-72 survived a countback to top C-grade.

The women’s stableford went to Helen Cashmore with 38 points, from Sue Byrne 35.

On the advice of an arborist, a huge manna gum near the fifth green was removed for safety reasons last week, following more huge limbs falling.

Juniors ready to soar in 2022 The Castlemaine Football Netball Club Juniors committee and coaches are looking forward to the 2022 season.

The Castlemaine Football Netball Club Juniors have appointed all coaches for the 2022 season.

CFNC Juniors president Chris Mackenzie said it is reassuring to have appointed their coaches well before the start of the season.

"We have secured a talented group of coaches, all of whom believe that their job is not only to develop the skills and playing abilities of the players but to help the players to become respectful, resilient and responsible children and young people,” Mackenzie said.

The coaches for the upcoming season are: Under 10 Mixed Black – James Collie and Wayne Walsh, Under 10 Mixed White – Sam Speer and Michael Pratt; U12 Boys - Brian Brasher; U14 Boys - Scott Harrington; U14 – 16 Girls - Antoinette Sampson; U16 – 18 Girls Stuart Dunn; U16 Boys - John Watson and Don Moran (joint coaches).

Coaching coordinator Shawn Rixon said the coaching group the CFNC Juniors have assembled can only be good for the club.

"The CFNC Juniors have always been able to attract highly capable and experienced coaches to the club, and the coaches appointed for the 2022 season are no exception," Rixon said.

When asked why he is coaching in 2022, U16/18 Girls’ coach Stuart Dunn said its a great club.

“I like the club. As a coach I feel supported by the committee, believe that the club is doing all the right things to become a destination for players and families in the area, and I’m very keen to develop our junior girls’ program,” Dunn said.

Stuart has been running a summer program for new and returning junior girls over the past couple of months, which has been well attended. The club aims to field U14 and U16 teams’ next season.

An easy win by Kyneton galloper In Bel’s Shadow at Benalla served as an early Christmas present for a large team of loyal connections. Trainer Neil Dyer said he was very pleased for the multiple owners who have stuck with the five-year-old mare.

“They enjoyed celebrations from the track and around the country,” Dyer said later.

The mare was having her nineteenth race start and was ridden by apprentice Hannah Le Blanc, whose 4kg claim certainly helped.

Wesley Hill Recreation Reserve, where a brand-new pavilion opened at the end of 2018 providing the CFNC Juniors with beautiful playing and training facilities.

The CFNC Juniors pride themselves on creating a fun and family-friendly environment.

Club treasurer Jason Staples said they want to make sure families and players feel welcome and valued.

"Game days are an opportunity for parents and carers to watch their children play, but it is also an important social outlet, an opportunity to catch up and have a chat with other parents,” he said.

The CFNC Juniors welcomes any child or young person, whether they are new to football or already experienced and keen to progress their footy.

“I have a child playing in one of the U10 Mixed teams and thought it was the right time for me to start playing a more significant role within the club. I think the CFNC Juniors are on an exciting journey and heading in the right direction, and I want to be a part of that,” Fraser said.

Kyneton & Hanging Rock Racing Club was very pleased with the Christmas Party Race Day at Kyneton on Thursday, and is now keenly anticipating a large attendance at Hanging Rock on New Year’s Day. The club’s operational manager, Lisa Evans, said the Campaspe dining room was full for the first time on Thursday since COVID restrictions impacted on the racing industry.

Plenty of racegoers used Thursday as a corporate and social gathering.

Advance bookings can be made for packages at Hanging Rock on New Year’s Day and Australia Day. ‘The Rock’ was last used for these popular meetings in 2020, being transferred to Kyneton in 2021.

Kyneton-trained gallopers ran well on Thursday, with four second placings, but a win proved elusive.

George Osborne had three runners at the meeting, but all drew wide, and still ran very well.

Kyla looked to be home but was grabbed by $61 outsider in the last couple of strides in the opening event, a Maiden Plate.

Whether its cricket or football, McKenna’s reputation and performance is well cemented at Gisborne and beyond, and if he continues to play it’s very likely Gisborne will end up near to or on top of the ladder.

Malmsbury Fast paced final round in CDCA just miss One win and two defeats was the scorecard for Malmsbury’s three cricket teams on Saturday – a case of what could have been.

At the MCG, Diggers Rest compiled 5/161c.c. from 40 overs with openers Careless and McDonald adding 79 and keeping the Berries bowlers at bay.

Parmy Singh captured two wickets, and followed up his century the previous weekend with top score of 53.

Despite scoring at the required run rate to get the points, Malmsbury fell an agonising six runs short, the last wicket falling with 3.1 overs remaining.

At Kyneton Showgrounds lower oval 412 runs were scored for the loss of 11 wickets.

Malmsbury’s early batsmen failed, with David Nolte’s first ball run out a setback.

From a struggling 4/20 the Berries revived to score 7/204 with the highlight Matt Cox’s unbeaten 109 from 70 balls.

Ed Kosmac 25 not out and Justin Murphy 18 helped the score along.

After claiming two early wickets, Malmsbury could not break through as Hayden Ingleton 88 and Andrew Idiens 70 shared a matchwinnig partnership. Chris Knott claimed 2-24 as Kyneton cruised to 4/208.

The bright note for Malmsbury was the much improved performance by the North Grade side which scored 150 against Dixon Field, then bundled the home side out for 112.

Castlemaine District Cricket Association senior sides contested round six matches in the last round of competition for the year. C Grade wrapped up day two of round three and the Women's division contested round three. In Maldon & District Community Bank T20 Cup action semi final action Newstead defeated Hepburn and will now face off against Barkers Creek in the final at the Camp Reserve on January 16. The highlights of the round were Hepburn A Reserve batsman Bodhi Robinson's 97 and Barkers Creek A Reserve bowler Daniel Chaplin's 5/20.
