Five creative women from Kyneton have collaborated to produce an audio-led theatre experience for families to enjoy at home. The online program, Mountain Goat Mountain, has been created by theatre makers Sarah Lockwood and Tahli Corin who have been exploring ways to make theatre more accessible to people outside of major cities. When theatres across the country began shutting down in light of coronavirus restrictions, they saw an opportunity to adapt one of their earlier installation works into a fully digital experience. The two women teamed up with artists ZoĂŤ Barry, Liz Francis and Nikita Hederics via emails and video conference calls to create a theatrical adventure.
"Mountain Goat Mountain is for families with young children (5+) who enjoy adventure and are missing going to the theatre, or to their special magical place," Lockwood said. "It's for families needing a break from monotony and who are looking for a sense of occasion and a way to celebrate each other and this time together." Co-creator Tahli Corin said the experience provided families an opportunity to play together. "Kids are naturals when it comes to imaginative play, Mountain Goat Mountain is an opportunity for adults to enter that world, and the whole family to create and explore together," she said. Subscribers to Mountain Goat Mountain are given access to a series of audio tracks in two acts that
guide families to set up and step into their own imaginative world. Participants will find themselves crawling through tunnels, crossing lava pits and swimming through underwater caves without leaving home! Other Kyneton locals also contributed to the project, with Jed Palmer providing sound design, Goldie Martine Palmer providing character voices and a very talented seven-year-old, Henrietta Mettler, as one of the voiceover actors. For 20 years, Sarah Collier has led and nurtured a team of more than 150 staff to create a home-like environment for residents of RM Begg Kyneton and provide high-quality aged care to the local community. Under Sarah’s hard-working leadership, RM Begg has grown exponentially in that time, and one of her proudest achievements is the new 90-bed facility and 12 two-bedroom independent living units that came to fruition after five long years of planning. “With no experience being a project manager I managed to work alongside the architects to achieve it!” she said. Sarah retired as CEO of the organisation last week and board chair Phillip Irvine said the board extended a heartfelt thanks to her for her many years of committed service. “RM Begg is the organisation it is today because of Sarah’s
leadership,” Phillip said. “We wish her all the very best in semi-retirement and look forward to working with her in her new part time role, supporting RM Begg build its next phase of fundraising capability.” Sarah now moves to the role of project coordinator two days a week, working alongside the board to gain much-needed funds for RM Begg. “We’re determined to stay as a stand-alone facility. We’ve got our good name because we’re independent,” she said. “I’ll be approaching families that have had the experience of having someone cared at our facility and local businesses and government for support also.” Former clinical care coordinator Meredith Grant stepped into the role of new CEO last week.

Castlemaine's new artisan cheesemaking business is on track to produce its first trial batches of cheese by midJuly and be fully operating by October. And a specialty cheesemaking school that's also part of the new venture taking shape in premises at The Mill Castlemaine is expected to begin taking classes by August. The Cheese School and artisan cheesemaking enterprise - Long Paddock Cheese - is being developed by a passionate partnership team with Cheese Full Circle Pty Ltd whose Melbourne-based director, Alison Lansley, is secretary of the Australian Specialist Cheesemakers Association. On site at The Mill this week Ms Lansley told the Midland Express that while COVID-19 had impacted delivery of specialised cheesemaking equipment from Europe, the restrictions had also had benefits for enabling building work to develop the new venture's two premises at the Mill. "It's actually been very fortuitous for us," she said. "The school building is now complete and we're just waiting for our equipment to arrive. "We have a container due to arrive from France in three weeks." Cheesemaking vats are part of that equipment consignment,

The Victorian Government is directing all Victorians to stay at home to slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). While the stay at home directions still apply, some restrictions have eased and there is now a fifth reason to leave home. You may only leave your home to: • Shop for food and other necessary goods and services. • Access medical services or provide caregiving. • Attend work or education where you can’t do those things from home. • Exercise and participate in some recreational activities adhering to the rules. • Visit friends, family and loved ones while adhering to the rules. You may also leave your home in an emergency or if required by law. You can now have: • Family and friends visit you at home – with up to five visitors being allowed at your home at one time. • Gatherings of people for the purposes of noncontact sport and recreation in public settings, such as parks – with groups of up to ten being allowed to gather. • Small gatherings of up to ten people at some indoor facilities such as places of worship and community centres – along with those required to run the facilities. The four-square metre rule applies. It is important that we all continue to stay at home and follow the advice to keep our community safe and protect each other. Please continue to maintain good hygiene and physical distancing, and check in on your family, friends and neighbours. We also urge you to shop locally to keep every dollar in our shire. Willow removal along Campbells Creek Council and the Friends of Campbell Creek Landcare Group will soon remove exotic and invasive willow trees along Campbells Creek between the Elizabeth Street Bridge downstream to Lewis Drive. The work will improve the environmental conditions of the creek and sustain native plants and animals. The tree removal work will start in coming weeks and take about two weeks to complete. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the public. Sections of the Campbells Creek trail will be closed to the public while works are underway to protect public safety between 7.00am and 5.00pm on weekdays. The area will be replanted with native species.

Over the next year Council will seek approvals and finalise designs for two levee banks planned for Castlemaine near Elizabeth Street and at the Central Cabins and Van Park, and two levee banks to protect the Campbells Creek township and at nearby National School Lane. Reading habits change The reading habits of Castlemaine residents may have changed a tad during lockdown it seems. Joyce Sanders of Castlemaine's Soldier & Scholar secondhand bookshop has managed to keep her popular little Barker Street business going throughout the pandemic crisis, gaining some interesting insights into readers' literary tastes in lockdown. With her atmospheric little shop forced to close to in-store browsing, Joyce has been able to keep going by relying more heavily on her online sales traffic, but has also innovated around sales and service delivery. Customers have been invited to browse titles online, lodge enquiries via email and order titles by phone - and then collect them, cleaned and waiting, by knocking on the bookshop door in person or even arranging to have them delivered to their car door on arrival. "I'm lucky in that I already had the online thing going," Joyce says. "In the second week of lockdown my online business went up about five times. "People overseas are looking at more rare books so that was very lucky." Closer to home, she says, literary comfort material has been in demand. "People are reading comfort materials," says Joyce, naming James Herriot titles as an example of what's been specifically sought. And enforced family togetherness
also seems to have had an influence. "I've had people looking for childhood classics like Treasure Island - childhood classics and good books to share with kids." Crime - as always - has continued to sell strongly in lockdown, the long-time book retailer says. "Crime is good because they want to sit back and not think too much about the virus - so it's something to take their mind off it." Conversely, demand for literature concerning plague and war appears to have declined. "They don't want to read about plague and war, nothing about contagious diseases," Joyce says, although she notes that the copy of Gabriel García Márquez' Love in the Time of Cholera that was sitting on her shelves has been snapped up in recent days. Joyce observes that some positives include the transferal of writers' festival speakers' programs, to online access. She names the Yarra Valley Writers Festival as one example she personally enjoyed catching online in recent days - "I wouldn't have had the opportunity otherwise," she says. "I'm busy. The online sales for me are very much like the stories of the cafes. "They're all doing takeaways but not making as much as they were (with dine-in customers). "While my online sales have increased it's not as great as having customers visit the shop."
Stolen engine sold online
Detectives from the Macedon Ranges Crime Investigation Unit are investigating the online sale of a stolen and unique antique steam engine. The engine was stolen from a disused winery on Black Hill Road at Toolern Vale sometime between March and April this year. Council reopens facilities under strict conditions Following recent government advice, we are reopening access to some facilities for limited sports training and exercise. Clubs will be allowed to train on Council sports grounds in groups of no more than 10 people, while adhering to physical distancing. Change rooms and social areas in the facilities will remain closed, but public toilets at sporting reserves will be opened. Council will follow advice and will progressively reopen grounds. Playgrounds, barbecues, skate parks, park benches and Hanging Rock Reserve will remain closed to public access at this stage.

Cat owners must adhere to new restrictions as Macedon Ranges Council’s new cat curfew takes effect from July 1. From this date, all cats within the shire must be confined to their property from sunset to sunrise, and will be prohibited from most sensitive environmental areas. Council’s director of assets and operations Shane Walden said cat owners should prepare now for the new requirements. “Council recognises building cat enclosures and making behavioural adjustments for cats takes time,” Mr Walden said. “We’re asking cat owners to act now, well before the July 1 curfew. “With many cat owners currently spending more time at home, this is a great opportunity to start thinking about how to confine your cat overnight and minimise stress while it adapts to change.” Cat owners should consider appropriate overnight housing for their cat or cats,

Tea pots, ukuleles, paintbrushes, gaming and pets have all been a part of life in lockdown, and now captured as part of a project to document Trentham through this time. The Driveway Project - Life in Lockdown is the work of local photographer Sandy Scheltema who aims to capture the fun, quirks, talent and loves, during these unprecedented times. "It is a way to document history in Trentham and surrounds during this time of staying at home, and a way of helping
families feel connected with others in the community," she said. Participants are asked to venture into their driveway as a family unit with items that represent what they have been doing in lockdown to be captured on film. The project will result in a photo series showcasing local families and the way they are dealing with a new way of life with a short description on how life has changed for the family during the coronavirus. The images will be shown on the Hepburn Shire Council Facebook page and the
Trentham Connections Facebook page and Instagram. They will also be provided to the Trentham Historical Society as a record of these challenging times. Pending further funding, an exhibition may be shown at the Cosmopolitan Hotel when social distancing rules are eased. Macedon Ranges Shire Council will welcome 92 new temporary staff for up to six months as part of the Victorian Government's Working for Victoria initiative. The additional short-term staff will form a mainly remote workforce performing roles such as providing food and catering for vulnerable people, environment works at Hanging Rock and beautification works in parks and gardens. The $500 million program is part of the government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and includes matching people who have lost their jobs due to the economic impacts of coronavirus with local councils. Macedon Ranges is one of an initial 28 councils across the state participating in the new initiative. CEO Margot Stork said the temporary new workers were our fellow Victorians, who were out of work due to the pandemic and through no fault of their own. "We've identified a range of new short-term roles above and beyond our normal program of work to help us with pandemic-related work such as assisting vulnerable members of the community," she said. "As the level of government that is closest to the community, we are well placed to know what residents and businesses need to get back on their feet." The council has encouraged its casual staff to register for the Working for Victoria initiative. Many of these staff normally work in centres and facilities that have been closed since the onset of the pandemic.

Proposed Romsey medical centre scrutinised
Changes to contentious plans for a 104-place childcare centre and double-storey medical facility at Romsey’s Autumn Views estate are still under scrutiny. The proposal for 2-8 Poplar Drive includes eight consulting rooms, two dental rooms, two pathology rooms, two wellbeing rooms and 51 car parking spaces. Applicants say the proposal meets a demand for professional services for the shire’s east and childcare centres in residential areas, but objectors argue the scale of a medical centre, loss of neighbourhood character and amenity impact is unacceptable. Last week, Macedon Ranges councillors heard from Terrain Consulting town planner Lorenzo Rigoni who spoke to revised plans submitted in March and needs of the growing community. Revisions flip the childcare centre, relocating the outdoor play area to the south, and relocate the Maple Drive vehicle crossover (to Poplar Drive) to improve traffic flow in response to council officer feedback. Operating hours of the medical centre were reduced by two hours but still open for emergency cases within that reduced time-frame. While there have been some concessions, they do not address all concerns raised by the 100-signature petition and 19 submissions that largely oppose the plan. Council elections to proceed The Victorian Government’s decision to go ahead with the general council elections this year is disappointing, says the Municipal Association of Victoria. The body has been lobbying on behalf of local councils to have elections postponed by 12 months in light of the current coronavirus pandemic. “Councils were most concerned about the health and safety risks as well as the potential for incumbent councillors to be unfairly advantaged in their campaigns,” MAV president Coral Ross said. “Coronavirus has thrown up a raft of difficult challenges, but councils have stayed focused on delivering essential services, supporting their communities... It is frustrating these efforts will now be distracted by the cost and challenges that come with planning for and holding elections.” Cr Ross said the MAV would seek to work closely with the state to deliver elections that were safe and that encouraged and supported candidates.

Facilities begin to reopen with strict conditions
Gudinski in tune The man who brought music to Hanging Rock, Michael Gudinski, has retained his title of Australia's top music influencer in The Music's Power 50. Last week the Mushroom Group executive chairman said it was an honour to secure top spot among the industry's elite for a second year running. "2019 was a huge year for Mushroom as a company, and for me personally," Gudinski said. "Frontier Touring announced our partnership with global touring giants AEG, we joined again with Chuggi and the Chugg Entertainment family, and the publishing and record label businesses continued to make strides." Gudinski has added Hanging Rock to the tour list for music royalty like Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil and The Eagles, with Elton John the latest to grace the stage. The Mount Macedon resident has served the entertainment industry for years as a promoter of Australian artists and as an advocate for youth in the industry. He said the music industry, like many others, had been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic but felt optimistic about its return. "Our artists were trailblazers in 2019, and they'll continue to be our lifeblood. The whole industry is under strain now because of COVID-19, but I know my people will use this time to take stock and, together with my son, continue to make the Mushroom Group stronger than ever," he said. The 2019 Power 50 has been compiled following input from a cross-section of music industry representatives along with the publishers and editorial team of The Music. Gudinski is joined in the Top Ten by Sony Music Entertainment's Denis Handlin AO, Universal Music Australia's George Ash, Secret Sounds' Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco, Live Nation Australasia's Roger Field, Spotify's Alicia Sbrugnera, TEG's Geoff Jones, Mushroom Group's Matt Gudinski, Sounds Australia's Millie Millgate and Apple Music's Katie Hardwick.
Some facilities throughout Macedon Ranges Shire have been reopened for limited sports training and exercise use in line with new government regulations. The facility reopenings follow the Victorian Government's relaxation of stage three restrictions imposed due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. Under the new arrangements, clubs will be allowed to train on council sports grounds in groups of no more than 10 people, with physical distancing and other requirements in place. Clubs will be required to ensure these restrictions are enforced, and change rooms and social rooms in facilities will remain closed. Council will reopen grounds progressively on the advice of peak sporting bodies such as AFL Victoria. Any public toilets in sports reserves which have been closed will be reopened. Parks will remain open, however residents will now be able to gather in groups of 10 for recreation and exercise purposes, including boot camps. Playgrounds, barbecues, skate parks, park benches and Hanging Rock Reserve remain closed to public access. A decision on opening Hanging Rock will be made in coming days, however it is unlikely to be reopened this week. Many council facilities, including pools and gyms, will remain closed until the current State of Emergency expires on May 31. The council will review its current arrangements on June 1 or earlier on the advice of the Victorian Government.

For the past 43 years, the monthly Australian Street Rodding magazine has been published from the offices of Graffiti Publications in Castlemaine. Now, the latest issue of Graffiti's largeformat annual magazine, Hot Rodding International, has just been released and is available in newsagencies. Produced entirely in the Castlemainebased production centre, Hot Rodding International is true to its name with international features on the best of hot rodding from around the world. The full-colour, 208-page glossy magazine is also distributed around the world through specialist dealers in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and through a national distributor based in California, USA. Graffiti Publications publisher Larry O'Toole said they were pleased to get the magazine out despite the challenges facing publishers during the coronavirus pandemic. "It is arriving in America as we speak. It's always a great feeling to get the annual publication out to our faithful followers," Larry said. Inside, hot rodding readers will find extensive features on project cars, major events and profiles on personalities within the hobby. There are also two automotive artist profiles in this issue with spreads of their fantastic artwork. "We normally travel all over Australia and the world gathering content. This is the first time in 35 years we won't be going to America to gather material. We do have some contributor content in our monthly magazine but our international magazine is pretty much all our own material, collated throughout the year from the various events," Larry said. "Fortunately we are always working ahead so we do have enough material for another two or three months' worth of magazines after that we will be looking at drawing on our rich archives," he said. "We have been archiving materials since day one and we have loads of unseen photographs and material. At any given
event we may take as many as 1500-2000 photos and we might only use 50. We will be able to explore some of these untapped resources as part of event histories and commemorative pieces," Larry said. Graffiti Publications are also the Australian distributors for a range of other highly sought-after hot rod mags including American publications The Rodder's Journal, Rodding USA and Wheel Hub, and Australian Hot Rodder produced by fellow Aussie enthusiast Graham Smith who is now based locally at Campbells Creek. Hepburn Council has appointed its project advisory group for the Artisan Agriculture Project. The group includes Carmel Masterson, Danny Kinnear, Tammi Jonas, Darren Rose, Sophia Christoe, Natalie Hardy, Richard Bales and Angela Clough. Working directly with artisan agriculture specialist Sharon Hebbard, the advisory group's role is to assist the council by providing key insights of industry trends and to promote a shared knowledge, understanding and increase awareness of the sector within the shire and broader central highlands region. Victoria is a major producer of food and fibre commodities, accounting for about one quarter of Australia's total agricultural production (by value). Artisan agriculture has only recently been acknowledged as a sector in a similar way that grains or dairy are acknowledged as being sectors with their own unique strengths, challenges and markets. In October last year, Hepburn Shire Council successfully acquired funding to lead the Artisan Agriculture Project over three years to provide support to the sector. Some of the aims include raising the profile of the shire and greater central highlands artisan agriculture producers, improve financial stability, increase access to business support services, and increasing awareness of competing land use pressures.

Well, to that, I reckon we can add "electricity bills keep rising", a point that's increasingly top of mind as so many of us spend more time at home with the resulting increase in power bills. The good news is that it is possible to alleviate the pain of high electricity bills by installing solar at an upfront cost that is incredibly low. For example, through the MASH solar bulk-buy, you can get a 3.3kW solar power system for an out-ofpocket cost of just $274. How's that possible? Are the installers doing it for love? Well no! The amount of $4050 is the price of a
solar power system through the MASH bulk-buy for a standard, single-phase installation. This price includes the federal government form of rebate - called Smallscale Technology Certificates. Without STCs, the price would be about 30 per cent higher. The Solar Panels rebate of up to $1888 is from the Victorian Government and is available to eligible households. Eligibility criteria include: - it is an existing property - property value is no more than $3M - total household income is no more than $180k - you haven't already received a rebate from the Solar Homes program. If you are eligible for the Solar Panels rebate, you will most likely also be eligible for the Victorian Government's interestfree loan (the same amount as the rebate). For a $1888 loan the monthly repayments are $39.33 over four years that's $1.30 a day! The Solar Panels rebate is also available for rental properties (but not the interest-free loan). Owners of a proposed Riddells Creek supermarket site have applied to extend their permit as they move to sell the land. Representing the applicants, Andrew McPherson addressed councillors at a submitters hearing last week, seeking a two-year extension for 1-3 Station Street, with potential buyers "waiting in the wings". The permit is for the development of a supermarket with associated car parking, a reduction in the car parking requirements and signage. The proposal includes construction of three buildings to accommodate a supermarket, 16 shops and a café. It was issued in December 2014 at the direction of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, but expired at the end of last year. Mr McPherson said the property had been purchased about 25 years ago and the owners, one deceased and others now elderly, wished to sell the site. Two potential buyers emerged last year but were cautious about the permit's end approaching. Discussions are expected to continue if the permit is secured. The application was not required to be advertised and received no submissions. Councillors will vote on the permit extension at their next council meeting on May 27.

False alarms at CCH Firefighters turned out to Cobaw Community Health's new facility at Kyneton twice over the weekend in response to fire alarms. Local brigades responded to alarms on both Saturday and Sunday but their investigations were hampered by locked doors within the building, with as yet no after-hours contact provided. The callouts turned out to be false alarms triggered by a hot
water service heating up and setting off the smoke detector. Kyneton firefighter Tristian Smith said the detector was replaced on Monday and the brigade had since formalised a preplan and contact details for the site. "Higher-risk facilities like these, as well as hospitals and aged care facilities, have direct brigade alarms to allow for rapid response," he added.

The profiles of co-op board members (Midland Express, May 12) were inspiring to read. The Kyneton community is fortunate to have such an impressive group of people offering a rich diversity of skills and experience in support of the Town Square vision. More strength to their arm. Notwithstanding the co-op’s extensive work over the past three years, it must still meet the hurdles and micromanagement requirements of the expression of interest process before it can bring that vision to reality. As I read it, the EOI is a collective covering of the shiny backsides of the bureaucrats who have presided over months and months of neglect, delays and vandalism to the former school buildings. Deciding on the management responsibility for the site carries no real risk for government (or the community) given the property will remain as Crown Land. Some years ago the global consulting company McKinsey and Company released a report, Lead Local Compete Global: unlocking the growth potential of Australia’s regions. The report’s main finding was - “given the task of rejuvenating a region and the choice of $50M, or $2M and 20 committed leaders, we would choose the smaller amount of money and the committed leaders”. Adapting this to the Town Square, it is the vision of a committed band of people not the money that will determine the success of this once-ever opportunity for Kyneton. After this year’s worst ever bushfires and now the coronavirus we are even more acutely aware of the importance of community. The co-op vision for a Town Square that nurtures the sense of belonging and brings the whole community together is an opportunity that should be supported.

(and the odd galah), we now enjoy the sounds of many different birds, and also frogs, it’s bliss. Our biggest traffic problems are now duck delays. Last week, in the morning sun and still clear waters, I saw a platypus appear in the shallows on my walk across the Mollison Street bridge. I am fine with most creatures. Even the odd huntsman, flat-backed borer beetle, or darting roach. I am familiar with, and fine with, the famous Kyneton slug (usually found around the dog’s food bowl, you know the one I mean). What I was not prepared for was the visitor I had inside the house recently - he was big enough to be knocking on the door with a lanyard. None other than Mr Ethmostigmus rubripes of the heavyweight division of the Macedon Ranges creepers… A lengthy 12cm of black, armoured, leggy and pincer-y centipede horror. Shiver me timbers! (or similar!) I exclaimed, repeatedly. He was slow moving enough that I was able to lay down a ruler for size (20 sets of legs and the 21st a kind of fake/pincerlike pair). My warm dry house was Not an option at this time, thank you. The trauma of putting him back out under a bush in the garden, and the (stupid) idea of trying to calm myself by doing some online learning about local centipedes has left me permanently scarred. (Tip: Don’t ever google-image the word centipede if you want to sleep at night). I just wanted to finish by saying that we are enjoying Kyneton very much, it’s been lovely to come back to nature after all these years, wouldn’t be anywhere else. Once we start having visitors again, you’ll forgive me though, for wanting to get down and check in your shoes every five minutes.
My husband and I relocated to Kyneton a year ago, away from helicopters and relentless level-crossing removal works. While we had parrots galore in Reservoir

I was interested to read your recent article waxing lyrical about the now demolished Kyneton pool (‘Buried memories’, May 12). While many memories are generated by old facilities of our childhood, we would do well to acknowledge how far we have come in the provision of sound community infrastructure. The old pool was responsible for constant leakage of chlorine pollutants into the river and leaching of hydrocarbons and cyanide into the soil from previous usage of the site. The old pool met no disability access standards in fact very few health and safety standards at all! The celebrated and popular indoor aquatic centre was the dream of the late Cr Joff Allan who moved to include $10,000 in council’s budget in 1992 for a feasibility study. This was the start of a long journey resulting in the new facility being opened in 2010. What a journey that was! Eighteen years of public meetings, lobbying, false starts and broken promises. Thankfully the community will prevailed. One of the key drivers behind the new facility was the late Ray Shea, others include Crs Henryka Benson, Allan Todd, Henry Bleeck and Roger Jukes and swimming club secretary David Sprigg. The pool committee efforts were supported by Bendigo MP Steve Gibbons and Gisborne/Macedon MP Joanne Duncan, both helped attract funding support. I was proud to play my part from seconding that decision in 1992 right up until the opening in 2010. Sadly, Joff Allan passed away before achieving his dream. Numerous detractors of the project were silenced when then-minister Anthony Albanese arrived in Kyneton to announce a $5M grant from the federal government. The pool was finally opened with Steve Gibbons and Geoff Howard in attendance. What a great day it was, nearly 20 years of community action resulted in the fantastic facility we now have. Some may regret the old pool passing into history, but we have a worthy replacement.

The recycled store enhances lives as an Australian Disability Enterprise providing meaningful supported employment to people with disability. Behind the scenes, clients, supported employees and staff are working on a garden upgrade project to revitalise some
long-neglected spaces to make them beautiful again. Even local businesses have got involved with Pyrenees Quarries Castlemaine donating some rocks (pictured) for the garden edging. Immunisation sessions in Romsey will be temporarily relocated to ensure appropriate social distancing can be maintained in the current coronavirus pandemic. While normal volunteering is on hold at the moment, there are still so many ways that Buda’s amazing volunteers stay connected, kick goals and keep the balls rolling. The team at Buda Historic Home and Garden are passionate, dedicated and keep all before them vibrant and productive through thick and thin. There’s an interesting world awaiting when you become a volunteer with the SES. Castlemaine SES Controller Paul Fitzpatrick says the door is always open for new members to join up. “In the SES you have a lot of variety, learn new skills and help the community,” Paul says. “The work is very satisfying...you help out people in need, people who might be in a bit of a pickle and can’t help themselves.” When you join the SES you study a fundamental training package that can be completed in a month or two. After that time you get a pager and will be on call to attend incidents. All your personal protective gear is provided, as is ongoing support and training.
Lions give back Becoming a volunteer and a member of a service club has great benefits. Take the Castlemaine Lions club for example. Becoming a member not only increases your base of friends and acquaintances, it gives you the opportunity to ‘do something’ by giving back to the community. Many local groups and causes have greatly benefited from Lions Club fundraising. The Castlemaine club’s biggest fundraiser each year is their April Swap Meet. They are helped out in the organisation of it by other clubs and groups who in turn, are given their rightful share of the profits. All funds the Lions raise go back to help others. For example, some of the most recent donations from the Lions’ fundraising efforts went to Ellery House for which a new wheelchair was purchased. Another to benefit from Lions’ fundraising is the Castlemaine hospital, which most recently purchased new equipment for the operating theatre through a club donation. Castlemaine Lions hold just one meeting a month so the nitty-gritty of the club doesn’t take up too much of members’ time. In fact, when it comes to meetings, the members call the tune so they suit! The Castlemaine SES covers heaps of territory right across Mount Alexander Shire so you can be called out far and wide in an emergency. People from the age of 16 years can become a member but until people are 18, work is basically training and gaining skills under supervision. Once a member turns 18 he or she can become fully operational. The upper age for members has no limit. Castlemaine even recently had a member in his 90s. Of course, not all members are operational. There are a variety of roles that can be filled including fundraising and public relations. Before the coronavirus crisis, market day volunteers were busy washing and drying Boomerang Cups, selling raffle tickets and organising cooking demonstrations. This ensured that the market could run as smoothly as possible and be a real crowd pleaser. During the pandemic, they have switched to becoming sanitiser monitors, crowd controllers and general champions of the market, both in real life and on social media. Volunteering in a difficult time This year’s National Volunteer Week theme is ‘changing communities, changing lives’, and that’s exactly what our local volunteers have been doing throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mount Alexander Shire boasts an impressive number of volunteers, with almost 5500 residents identifying as volunteers. That means one in four people, our family and friends, have a volunteer role supporting the community in some capacity. Volunteers are critical to many local essential services. Voluntary action has had a vital role in helping to build community resilience and target responses to the many challenges we’ve faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Very early in the pandemic it became apparent that volunteering was not an activity that could continue as it had for many years. Most volunteer roles are face-to-face, which presented an unmanageable risk in a period of social distancing and self-isolation, so most of that traditional volunteer activity came to a halt. While formal volunteering programs are on hold, the pandemic has presented an unexpected opportunity that enabled volunteers to find new ways to give within the confines of social distancing, social isolation and quarantine. In previous years, everyone came together in the Market Hall to celebrate the diverse contribution of volunteers and the joy they bring to our community. Our ability to gather together is limited by the State of Emergency but it’s more important than ever to recognise and acknowledge how volunteers change communities and lives as part of National Volunteer Week 2020. Thank you to all volunteers in the Mount Alexander Shire this National Volunteer Week 2020. Mount Alexander Community Pantry In response to the current coronavirus crisis many local organisations are working together to support our community members with. In particular, the Community Pantry supports people in need by providing frozen pre-prepared
meals and food packages, made with community spirit, care and strict standards of hygiene, Mountt Alexander Community Pantry grew from modest beginnings to a coordinated group operating from Church of Christ and Maldon Community Centre. The Community Pantry is now delivering more than 300 prepared meals and support packages to over 80 households each week. These households are struggling to cope with loss of employment and/or safe access to fresh food thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. Castlemaine Health As Castlemaine Health’s aged care went into lockdown, volunteers not only accommodated with understanding the changes, they also adjusted their roles and some, when requested, took on new specific roles. The Castlemaine Rotary Club stepped up to pair volunteer pen pals with 143 aged care residents. The pen pals have been delighting residents with regular letters from old and young, including a group of students from Castlemaine Primary School. CHIRP Community Health At CHIRP Community Health, volunteers have continued supporting the community over the phone and online. CHIRP’s youth mentoring volunteers are also keeping in touch with their mentees through video chats and phone calls. Walking group volunteers are coordinating a phone tree of support among the participants during the coronavirus epidemic. They are also sharing information about the evolving DHHS requirements and local supports. Informal volunteering activities include delivering casseroles, arranging virtual groups, and dropping off homegrown produce into letterboxes. Maldon Hospital Maldon Hospital has seen many people volunteer their time to do something thoughtful for residents and drop at the hospital such things as letters from children, drawings, books and puzzles. It is this level of community support through volunteering that enriches resident and patients’ lives.

Castlemaine Health’s Patient Transport Service had to be reduced, but they are still running the service for urgent appointments with just one of their drivers. Deb Haley has been that driver and has done a wonderful job getting clients to their appointments in Bendigo.

Popular lunch comes back Kyneton's popular community lunch is back but with a difference. On Wednesday between 12pm and 1pm the Kyneton Community House team will be serving up meals for pick up from its base at 34 Mollison Street. The takeaway meals will include two courses for $5 with tuna bake and red lentil and vegetable cottage pie as options on the menu along with a tasty dessert. Streetscape to change Streetscape projects have been announced for Campbells Creek, Elphinstone and Taradale under the Regional Infrastructure Fund. Minister for Agriculture Jaclyn Symes, 2019 Young Farmers Scholarship recipient Sophia Christoe and Mary-Anne Thomas MP.
Young farmers are being encouraged to take advantage of an opportunity to expand their skills, knowledge and agricultural expertise. The Upskill and Invest Young Farmers Scholarships allows successful applicants to access study and training, as well as invest in on-farm initiatives and further professional development. The program offers scholarships of up to $10,000 to support training and study in areas such as business and risk management, genetics and pasture management development. Previous local recipients include Sophia Christoe, a goat dairy farmer from Trentham, and Jackson Keane, a sheep and garlic farmer from Pipers Creek. Once recipients complete their studies, they will receive further funding of up to $5000 to invest in putting their new skills into practice in fields such as professional development and business planning, or to invest in on-farm practices, equipment and technology. Applications for this year's round of scholarships are now open to farmers aged 35 or under who have been working in farm businesses for at least three days a week for the past three months, with at least two years total experience on-farm. A group of committed Girton staff members has come together and designed an alternative co-curriculum program called Co-connect, which provides students and their families, along with Girton staff members, fun ways to stay connected during term two. Acting head of Girton Grammar School, Dr Emma O'Rielly, said the Co-connect program was the school's main wellbeing initiative for term two. "For the overwhelming majority of our students, remote learning is going well, but there is no doubt that there is a social and emotional toll on young people who are isolated from one another. "While we look forward to welcoming some of our students back to school on May 25, it is our extensive co-curricular program that many of our students are missing the most. "Our graduates tell us that the Girton co-curricular activities helped to shape their lives and we know that it is often the activities outside the classroom that help create lifelong memories and friendships for our students," Dr O'Rielly said. The Girton Co-connect program consists of 20 activi-
ties, overseen by Girton staff, that can be undertaken from home by students and their families, including non-Girton siblings, as well as staff members. The program is designed to support students in trying something new, connecting with students in different year levels and learning new skills. Activities include; the compilation of a virtual music video performance with music specially arranged for a variety of instruments and vocalists by a Girton music teacher; a short film competition; a science 'spaghetti machine' competition; yoga; a running club; and a studentto-student reading mentor program with the Smith Family. Video clips, photos and interviews from participants will form the basis of content for 'Girton TV', which will take the form of a weekly 15-minute video reflection of life during the COVID-19 pandemic at Girton. "We all look forward to getting back to our regular Co-curriculum program, but in the meantime, Girton Co-connect will provide some sense of connection for our school community. "It is such a privilege to work at a school that so strongly values the all-round development of students, academically and as good citizens. The Co-connect program is a great example of adapting to meet the needs of our students no matter the circumstances," Dr O'Rielly said.

Term two has seen a whole new adventure in the world of learning for the students and staff at Tylden Primary School. The whole school has embraced remote learning with enthusiasm. Prep to grade six students made a smooth transition to working at home, using learning packs from school and online Google Classrooms. They all thoroughly enjoyed their daily WebEx class conferences with their friends and teachers. Nonetheless, they are all glad that school will resume again in only a week or so. St Mary’s Primary School Although there have been many challenges along the way for all schools, there has been a significant amount of new learning in a short time. The students of St Mary’s in Castlemaine have been working hard with their parents and teachers to establish new daily routines for their learning and developed safe, comfortable and quiet home learning environments where they have worked effectively. A key disposition that has been on display from all students is an ability to communicate with their teachers to fully engage in home learning tasks. Furthermore, time management and personal organisation skills have flourished where students have shown great development in monitoring learning tasks and checking daily announcements.
COVID-19 has offered some positive opportunities for the school community to experience significant growth in digital technology skills that will be built upon and enhanced from semester two. St Mary’s school community has been greatly missing the connection with each other and are eagerly awaiting resuming onsite learning from May 26. “I miss my friends but I have got to spend a lot more time with my family,” said Livinia from grade prep. There were plenty of happy golfers throughout the district after the coronavirus clamp down on the sport was relaxed last week. Golfers had been banned from playing socially and in events for about two months, with many golf clubs suffering from the associated dry-up in revenue. Saturday was a particularly busy day, with numbers well up on many courses. Fine and pleasant weather conditions were welcomed by players, many understandably 'rusty' after their enforced lay-off. Social distancing rules still applied,
and there were wide smiles from many who were just glad to be able to get out and have a hit once again. Lancefield Golf Club had a very large field in a stableford event on Saturday, and pictured after completing their round are club members Allen Collins (from Romsey) and Mick Stomilovic (Sunbury). While Mick was pleased with his score, Allen admitted he had far too many shots ... but both were thrilled to be back on the course again, putting a golf buggy to good use. Green fee players are also expected to take advantage of the ban on playing golf being lifted.

Following the first phase of lockdown relaxation, Kyneton Golf Club is happy to announce the course is once again open for players. The management committee has put out clear guidelines for players to access the course, with social distancing being a key element for all to manage. Four golfers can play together, but only 10 people can congregate in any one place at a time. There are also other procedures that must be followed, including not removing the flag, not playing out of the sand bunkers, only collecting the sand buckets from the first tee sand pit and then returning used sand buckets to the collection point as indicated. The club has increased its volunteer presence to assist both green fee players and members with accessing the course and ensuring they understand the requirements of play. One of the important procedures, which must legally be adhered to, is that all persons playing on the course provide their name, telephone number and time of play. This is to ensure if there is any later notification of a player testing positive, there is a record of who they may have come into contact with. As an encouragement for people with children to get them out of the house and undertaking some exercise - the golf club is providing free play for all children under 18, if they are accompanied by a paying adult. Cost for a round of nine holes is $15, while the full 18 holes is $30. Misscino sparkles
Kyneton galloper Misscino showed sparkling form to win over 1200 metres at Warracknabeal on Saturday. The impeccably bred Smart Missile -- Limoncino (NZ) five-year-old mare was having just her second start for trainer Helen White, previously finishing second on May 2 at Horsham. Misscino was ridden in fine style by Bridget Grylls in the Class 0-58 event, and won by 1.5 lengths from Anticipate.
The mare, starting at $9.50, chalked up her third win at her 31st start, with earnings of $117,140. Misscino was originally purchased unraced for $300,000 by Aquanita Racing, and in her racing career has been trained by some notables including Robert Smerdon, Darren Weir, Will Clarken and Robbie Griffiths. Helen White is hoping the mare's current form can lead to more success this preparation.

Cameron Tomlins, Bendigo FNL manager said anticipation on a new wave of announcements is high following last week's proclamation by the state government, along with AFL Victoria, about the gradual easing of COVID-19 restrictions. Dual Melbourne Cup winning trainer Robert Hickmott describes Romsey's Kerrygail Farm as "a perfect facility to complement Hickmott Racing's Caulfield and Ballarat stables". The 270-acre state-of-the-art racing complex just south of Romsey was recently vacated by Luke Oliver, now training at Cranbourne. Hickmott, a New Gisborne resident, finalised all necessary approvals to utilise Kerrygail Farm last week, and has already moved some horses there. A farm manager has been appointed. He said the Romsey complex fitted in splendidly with a three-year plan to get Hickmott Racing - which has around 110 gallopers on its books - established as a major player in the Australian racing industry. KEEN ON GERMAN GALLOPERS Having been closely involved with plenty of elite stayers during his 12 years at Macedon Lodge, Hickmott has studied the European racing scene closely, and regards German-bred gallopers as being ideal for Australian conditions. Schabau, making a return after 14 months lay-off due to a tendon injury, and Django Freeman, soon to race, were bred and raced in Germany, and are highly rated by Hickmott.
Growing up on the family farm near Wangaratta, the 51-year-old Hickmott was destined to be involved in racing, riding trackwork for his father John as a youngster. John Hickmott was in real estate for a time, then became a full-time trainer and won the NEDRA trainers' premiership. John has prepared over 500 winners, mostly in South Australia. FINE FOOTBALLER Rob soon knew he would be too heavy to become a jockey, and Australian Rules football was an attraction. As a teenager, he starred for Wangaratta Rovers in the 1988 grand final victory, and attracted the interest of VFL talent scouts. He was at Essendon for a time, then was taken by Melbourne in a pre-draft, where he played two senior games before departing at the end of 1991. Like many country recruits, Hickmott found it hard to adapt to the AFL: "It was fun," he candidly admitted. Hickmott laughs when reminded of the quiz question: Which AFL footballer trained a Melbourne Cup winner? He did when he was head trainer for the legendary owner Lloyd Williams at Macedon Lodge -- Green Moon in 2012, followed by Almandin in 2016. Zipping was the first of Hickmott's 13 Group 1 winners. Williams offered Hickmott a job in 2001;
he had earlier worked with his father in South Australia, and been stable foreman with Colin Little and Tony Vasil at Caulfield, and Alan Bailey on the Gold Coast. Hickmott has trained 240 winners since obtaining his licence in 2009; a strong winning percentage of 17 per cent from over 1400 starters. Reassessing his situation in late 2017 after the death of his brother, Rob departed from Macedon Lodge and looked to branch out on his own. He soon took over training several horses from the John Sadler team at Caulfield when the latter was suspended, and now occupies the large stables once occupied by long-time trainer Robert Smerdon (now disqualified). "Caulfield has great training facilities, as good as any in Australia," Hickmott said. He presently has 37 horses in work there, and 12 at Ballarat. ROMSEY OPPORTUNITY Hickmott likes the Macedon Ranges, and said he heard about the Kerrygail Lodge opportunity purely by chance. "My father came over and inspected the property, and urged me to go there ... it will complement Caulfield and Ballarat." "Kerrygail Lodge will give our horses every opportunity to sustain longer preparations with a beautiful environment to freshen up horses post run. "It will also be very beneficial for horses
that need rehabilitation after injuries." Hickmott said it had everything needed - lush green day yards, a water walker, 75-metre pool, 1800-metre grass training track, and a good quality 1600-metre sand track. The trainer is a strong believer in gallopers having access to open paddocks and country life as much as possible, and complimented Kerrygail Lodge's Bianco Giampaulo for her assistance. AIMING HIGH Asked what his ambitions are, Hickmott said he had high hopes of winning quality races both in Melbourne and interstate, with international owner David Price being a strong stable client. "It would be great to win a Cox Plate and other blue ribbon events like the Guineas .... another Melbourne Cup would be good as well," Hickmott said. He estimates it will take 10 to 12 months to get the Romsey complex fully operational to suit his plans, with at least 30 horses there at a time. About 12 employees are expected to work at Kerrygail Lodge. Hickmott Racing has plenty of well-bred yearlings to be broken in, and there is an opportunity for syndication. "A number of racing enthusiasts can pool resources and get a share in a horse, and we are always pleased to discuss what we can offer for new clients," he said.
