She said 60 per cent of those had been from Melbourne and 30 per cent from regional Victoria - while it was unclear where the remaining 10 per cent travelled from.

Castlemaine's Buda Historic House and Gardens is one of the local ticketed venues to see the benefits.

"Our admission system has recorded that we've had a 126 per cent increase in visitors for this January as compared to last January," Ms Hamilton said.

It's an observation the Victorian Goldfields Railway is happy to share.

"Absolutely. We've been packed out since we resumed running in December," the local tourist railway's Andrew Reynolds said.

"Every train has been full and first class has been booking out the quickest.

"Our sales from the passenger bar are double or three times what we normally get.

"These are people who have disposable income and they're not scared to spend.

"Usually our bookings drop right off in February but they're not showing any sign of slacking off.

"It's been great for us since trying to come out of COVID and having had no revenue for the previous seven months."

"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity for regional areas," Ms Walsh said, adding that once new visitors discovered the area the chance of repeat visitations significantly improved.

Mount Alexander Shire's manager of economy and culture, David Leathem, agreed.

"It's a great opportunity to showcase our shire to a whole new market," Mr Leathem said.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council and more than 1300 primary and secondary school students will this year work to eliminate single-use plastic from their workplaces and schools.

They are joining Plastic Oceans Australasia's Engagement for PlasticFree Innovation Change business and education program to collect data and phase out single-use plastic by changing behaviours.

The POA team will deliver workshops, provide survey documentation to measure the amount of plastic used as well as a database with supply alternatives including environment and cost assessments.

POA says each person in Australia uses about 130kgs of plastic per year, with the equivalent of one truckload of rubbish ending up in the ocean every minute.

"If councils and communities are serious about reducing the impact of plastic on our waterways and marine environments, then they need to start looking at how much plastic they use and begin to find alternatives," POA executive director Ricki Hersburgh said.

The education program equips primary and high school students with the knowledge and skills to drive public awareness about the global plastic problem.

Schools included in the program are Hesket Primary School, St Mary's Primary School Lancefield, Tylden Primary School and Braemar College.

"These schools will soon be starting their plastic free education program through the support of the Macedon Ranges Shire Council, who at the same time will begin their own EPIC program," said council's director of assets and operations, Shane Walden.

Review of Wildlife Act

The Victorian Government has appointed an independent expert advisory panel to lead a review of the Wildlife Act that protects and manages our state's unique wildlife.

The panel will engage with the Victorian community about what changes to the Act are necessary to establish a modern, bestpractice wildlife regulatory framework.

As part of their review, the Panel will look at how the Wildlife Act benchmarks against wildlife legislation in other jurisdictions.

The panel will report on its findings and recommendations by mid-2021. Community consultation with the panel will open via Engage Victoria in March 2021.

The council is offering funding to assist organisers with the running costs for new and established events and festivals.

In a shock announcement on Friday, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews sent the state into a five-day 'circuit breaker' lockdown.

Hair-raising time in Cobaw

A stray sheep weighed down by at least five years' of fleece was found wandering the Cobaw State Forest.

The sheep, now named Baarack, was taken into care at Macedon Ranges' animal sanctuary Edgar's Mission where a haircut determined a close call for the record-books.

Sanctuary founder and director Pam Ahern said his fleece weighed in at a whopping 35.4kgs and was a matted mess complete with sticks, twigs, insects and urine.

"We could not even see his eyes let alone make out his ears, and the poor boy could hardly stand," Ms Ahern said.

The Guinness World Record

for heaviest fleece is a staggering 41.1kgs. This fleece now resting in the National Museum of Australia in Canberra was taken from a wayward merino found wandering at Mulligan's Flat in the ACT in 2015.

Ms Ahern said sheep of today, unlike their ancestors, the Wild Mouflon, needed to be regularly shorn, at least annually, otherwise critical welfare issues arose.

"We are truly grateful that Baarack was found in the nick of time," Ms Ahern said.

"It was incredible to see him take his first few steps without all that wool, as his back sunk down as it no doubt had for some time. But with

each step you could also hear him baa, 'ah, I feel better now, that's brilliant!'."

The Edgar's Mission team believes Baarack to be about eight years old.

Due to the weight burden of the wool around Baarack's face, his eyelids had been pulled down enabling grit and grass seeds to painfully enter, causing ulcers that are now being treated.

Grass seeds had also become embedded in his skin, which the sanctuary team is slowly working to remove as it gains Baarack's trust.

Now relieved of his fleece, Baarack is settling into life at the sanctuary.

Baarack was weighed down by 35.4kgs of fleece and is now recovering at Edgar’s Mission.

Baarack was relieved to be rid of his woolly coat.

What a difference a day makes.

This evening’s first ordinary meeting of Mount Alexander Shire Council for 2021 was intended to include a public gallery - for the first time in many months, since March 2020 in fact.

But no sooner had the plan been enacted enabling engaged members of the public to once again sit in on the council’s monthly ordinary meetings than it was rendered null and void by Victoria’s snap five-day lockdown.

The first news of the lockdown triggered panic buying in Castlemaine on Friday afternoon.

The Express had just finished locking in its news report publicising the resumption of the council’s public gallery - and relocation of this evening’s council meeting to the town hall to enable social distancing - when Premier Daniel Andrews announced the “circuit breaker action”.

The lockdown - a response to a concerning rise in the state’s

number of COVID cases - is now set to continue through to until 11.59pm tomorrow Wednesday, February 17.

So interested members of the public will once again have to tune in to this evening’s meeting via YouTube live online streaming - just like they did for most of last year.

Those who do set aside time to catch this evening’s livestreamed meeting from 6.30pm can expect to hear the comparatively new Mount Alexander Shire council discuss agenda items including planning applications for Gaulton Street in Castlemaine and Allendale Road in Elphinstone, an updated COVID-19 financial hardship policy, and public petitions requesting the sealing of some streets in Harcourt and a speed zone change at Baringhup.

Mount Alexander mayor Cr Tony Cordy said he had been looking forward to the return of the public gallery and was disappointed that it was now not to be - at least not for this month’s meeting.

“But it’s in everybody’s interests that we get COVID under control,” Cr Cordy told the Express.

Tea taking the world by storm Lisa Dennis

Tea for two has taken on a whole new meaning for Australian beverage business East Forged, whose nitrogen-infused coldbrew teas are gaining international attention - and winning accolades at the same time.

The product of two tea-loving ladies, Campbells Creek's Tania Stacey and Brisbane native Kym Cooper, East Forged flips the traditional notion of iced tea on its head.

Tania told the Express that they wanted to create a cold tea that everyone could enjoy without the sugar and calories found in traditional iced teas.

"You can make a beautiful iced tea by just infusing pure leaf tea with cold water and adding fruit, but we wanted to elevate the experience and bring something a bit special to the non-alcoholic market that the discerning tea drinker could enjoy while out and about or at special occasions and it's been really well received," she said.

Looking deceptively like a beer when hard-poured, East Forged cold brews are quickly becoming a fast favourite in the booming non-alcoholic adult beverage category, one that has benefited globally from lockdown measures.

Tania said movements such as Dry January and Feb Fast had attracted even more attention to the alcohol-free market, and East Forged's low sugar content (less than 0.3g of sugar per can) combined with all the goodness of pure leaf tea, meant that it had wide appeal in the health and lifestyle categories.

"It's a great alternative and something everyone can enjoy - even expectant mums. It's the perfect accompaniment to a high tea instead of the traditional glass of

champagne," she said.

The founders of the brand both have extensive backgrounds in the tea industry, with Tania having previously won the World Tea Brewing Championship (Australia), and together they decided they wanted to bring a new category to tea - and it's paying off.

The tea is sourced direct from growers that the pair have met and formed working relationships with.

"Our black tea is grown in Brisbane, our white tea is from China and our green tea from Japan," Tania said.

The tea is shipped to be 'forged' onsite at an independent craft brewery in Sydney.

Tania said finding a craft brewer that would take on the product was a challenge.

"We spoke to breweries in Brisbane and Melbourne and they weren't interested but fortunately we got onto an amazing craft brewer in Sydney who believed in us," she said.

Covering the three biggest tea pillars - green, black and white - and launching in the unique and interesting flavour combinations of Pitaya (South America), Calamansi (Phillipines), and Yuzu (Japan), East Forged brews recently won the duo gold and silver medals at The Global Spirit Masters in the United Kingdom in the Lo/ No Alcohol category, taking their total award wins to a staggering five medals in the past 12 months.

East Forged's success is even more incredible given the founders have been forced to work in separate states for much of the last year due to the impacts of the pandemic.

The pair are a COVID success story as well as a 'tea-riffic' example of innovation in an age-old category.

Macedon Ranges Council's Business Continuity and Resilience Program aims to assist businesses wishing to upskill, explore growth opportunities or build economic resilience for possible future trading interruptions.

Funded from the council's COVID Recovery Budget, up to two vouchers of up to $1000 each, can be applied for by local businesses that wish to engage professional services based within the Macedon Ranges.

These professional services include accounting, legal advice, marketing, strategy/business planning, grant writing or human resources.

With recent reports of Queensland Fruit Fly in Castlemaine, Harcourt and Harcourt North, it's more important than ever to help stop the spread of this pest in the shire.

Queensland fruit fly can devastate commercial and backyard fruit and vegetable crops.

Mount Alexander Shire Council and the Harcourt Valley Fruit Fly Action Group are calling for the community to work together to quickly prevent any further spread.

Harcourt Valley Fruit Fly Action Group member Terry Willis said the good rainfall and mild weather meant things couldn't be better for fruit fly, so it was important to act quickly to reduce the spread.

"We don't want it to get a foothold like it has in other areas of the country, where people end up ripping out fruit trees, and not bothering with backyard veggie gardens," Mr Willis said.

"The most important things that people can do at this time are the three Ps. The first P is for prune - prune your trees so they are a nettable height," he said.

"P is also for pick up - get your fallen fruit off the ground and pick any fruit that you don't plan to eat.

"The third P is for protect - protect your fruit and veggies with monitoring traps or incursion netting."

Monitoring traps are available at local gardening shops. The traps will help you to know if you have fruit fly at your property.

It's also important at this time of year to keep an eye out for grubs or larvae in fruit or vegetables.

"Don't just put infected fruit in the compost - you need to dispose of it properly by putting it in a bag and leaving in the sun for at least a week. You can also pop them in the freezer," Mr Willis said.

"Please also be careful when bringing fruit from affected areas. This is an easy way for the pest to spread, and we know there is a lot of fruit fly around the state."

Here's what you can do this summer: - Don't bring infected fruit into the shire - Net your vegetable garden, fruit trees or bag individual fruit - Pick fruit regularly and clean up fallen fruit - Check tomatoes and fruit for sting marks

Keep an eye out for the Queensland fruit fly.

- Continue to trap and monitor fruit fly population levels weekly - Prune trees to a manageable height so you can pick, net and check fruit - Treat infected fruit by microwaving, freezing or placing the fruit in a sealed black plastic bag and leaving in the sun for at least seven days. The fruit must be disposed of in the rubbish bin, not in the compost.

Keep a look out Queensland fruit fly are very small about five to eight mm long. They are brown with yellow 'shoulder pads' and other markings including a yellow triangle at the base of the mid-section. They have reddish eyes.

The larvae are white or cream and two to nine mm long. They are wedge shaped and plumper at the tail end. A black feeding hook is visible in mature larvae. You may find between two and 20 larvae in the fruit.

The pupae are like a large grain of brown rice and vary in colour from cream to brown.

Infected fruit becomes soft and spongy and may start to rot. You may see sting marks on light-coloured fruit. The flies may eat all the fruit and leave the skin.

The high-risk fruits in summer are stone fruit such as apricots, peaches, nectarines and plums. High-risk vegetables are tomatoes, capsicums and chillies.

Integration progresses

VCAT approves tower for Woodend A 33-metre telecommunications tower planned for Woodend's southern gateway is expected to "fade into the background and become a normal and unremarkable part of locality".

This was the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal determination this month to overthrow Macedon Ranges Council's unanimous decision to reject the tower back in 2019.

Planned for Woodend Railway Station, the tower would have a sensitive interface with Corinella Road residents and, it was argued, would be visually dominating at a town entrance.

The council's decision was based on visual and environmental impact, which supported a community petition with 275 signatures.

Councillors argued that more effort should have been made to co-locate or construct a low-impact facility but agreed Optus coverage in the area could be improved.

VCAT heard current Optus coverage was patchy, reliant on a tower in Mount Macedon, and would be significantly improved through the proposed new tower.

Optus sought to construct a facility as part of the state's Regional Rail Connectivity Project. Telstra had a similar

separate proposal for the neighbouring 61 High Street.

VCAT proceedings for the Optus case were delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions, to allow for site inspections.

VCAT member Katherine Peterson determined the tower would have no impact on the heritage values of the township and felt it would be "largely screened from view" by existing vegetation for nearby residents.

Ms Peterson said there was limited scope for additional planting and determined no landscape plan was required.

"The monopole may appear quite dominant when first constructed, however, in time, it will become just another piece of infrastructure in the landscape a part of someone's everyday experience in the same way that electricity poles, road signs, television aerials and satellite dishes fade into the background and become a normal and unremarkable part of locality," Ms Peterson said.

Ms Peterson was convinced by photo simulation evidence Peter Haack presented in arguing the tower would be read as "a relatively small component in the context of existing power poles, supermarkets lighting poles, and supermarket buildings".

Feedback from staff and community members has encouraged the boards of CHIRP Community Health and Castlemaine Health to continue development of a plan for the integration of community services.

The priority of the two boards is to ensure the continued provision of accessible and responsive community health services for local communities. To support this, the boards have invited wide community input.

Last year, Castlemaine Health and CHIRP Community Health sought feedback from staff and community members across Mount Alexander Shire on the future of local community health and services and the possible integration of their programs and services.

Some of the key points of the initial feedback include: - The importance of retaining all local community health services and programs; - The need to ensure that services and programs are easily accessible for all (in terms of physical access, clear information being available, and a warm and welcoming environment); - Staff and community would like to have more opportunities to stay involved in designing future community health services and programs.

EV charge points soon The City of Greater Bendigo is planning to install two new electric vehicle charging stations at the Queen Elizabeth Oval car park in the next few months as part of the 'Charging the Regions' program.

The program will see more than 20 new electric vehicle stations being constructed in northwest Victoria at 17 sites to help boost tourism, create jobs and reduce emissions. The project is being delivered by the Central Victorian Greenhouse Alliance, Victorian Government and 12 local councils, including the city.

Speak up on waterway plan Macedon Ranges residents are encouraged to provide feedback on a draft strategic environmental works plan for several waterway reserves in the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment.

The draft strategic environmental plan will guide works along each waterway to improve water quality and habitat values through strategic weed management and revegetation.

The plan, which covers 37 reserves in the townships of Gisborne, Macedon, Riddells Creek and Romsey, Newham and Darraweit Guim, has been developed in partnership with Melbourne Water and landowners.

Submissions are invited until Sunday February 28.

Sounds of the commute

A community driven sound project is documenting and celebrating the sounds of the commute from Melbourne to Castlemaine and surrounds.

Newstead electronic producer, vocalist, musician and sound artist Aimee Chapman is using the project to kick-off the 2021 Phee Broadway Theatre 'At Home' creative residency program.

Her work, Coming Home, is inspired by the music of train and road trips and will be brought to life in multiple ways.

Ms Chapman said the project was conceived during her frequent trips travelling from Newstead to Melbourne, both driving and on public transport.

"This ritual of coming home - back to Castlemaine and the surrounding areas - for goldfields residents who work, play or visit Melbourne, is such a shared experience," Ms Chapman said.

"As a result of COVID-19, these regular commutes became a distant memory for most of us last year due to work from home orders.

"In recent months as restrictions eased and we started to open up the corridor between Melbourne and Castlemaine again, actively listening and documenting those once-familiar sounds brought a renewed warmth and meaning to the concept of coming home," she said.

Community members are encouraged to contribute sounds to Coming Home through the

The Victorian Government has launched an online platform deadlyandproud.com.au, to share stories from Traditional Owners about why all Victorians can feel pride in the state's rich Aboriginal heritage.

Victorians can learn more about the land on which these stories are told and the connection to country by exploring the interactive map of Victoria on the platform.

'Deadly' to Aboriginal people means strong, amazing and awesome, it's been used in this campaign to describe the storytellers and advocates, and the stories they share.

Castlemaine Contemporary Art Space is currently featuring an exhibition of works by talented local Indigenous artist Arkeria Armstrong.

The artist said her latest show was called Yilambu.

"I am a Gamilaraay woman. In our language Yilambu means 'long ago'. Gamilaraay country is in northwest New South Wales," she said.

Arkeria said she wanted to share her culture through art.

"The exhibition shows a range of acrylic on canvas pieces that explores the themes of Country, Identity and Relationships," she said.

"My painting style has been developed through learning from both my maternal grandmother (Gamilaraay) and paternal grandfather. (Yorta Yorta). They both used different styles for creating art from a traditional perspective," the artist said.

"It is with the roots of understanding culture that I now move to tell my story in a contemporary style. It is my connection and feelings that are intertwined with stories that can be seen within the lines, strokes and dots layered on the canvas.

"Each piece tells a different story with a range of themes. I hope that people can see how showing culture through art is a healing force that connects past and present."

Arkeria was born in Ceduna, the last major town before the Nullarbor Plain, and travelled the length and breadth of the country with her prospecting parents, eventually settling down in Bendigo and starting a family of her own with partner Chris. They now live in Castlemaine.

Her work is also featured in collections in Kununurra and Amsterdam.

Support for creatives

Castlemaine Cemetery is the resting place of many local identities including the infamous Fanny Finch - one of the first women to vote in Victoria. A memorial was erected in honour of the goldfields pioneer in early 2020.

CHIRP Community Health's monthly walking tours have resumed, aimed at building social connections and addressing social isolation due to COVID-19.

CHIRP health promotion officer Liza Shaw has been running monthly walking tours since 2014, but these did not occur throughout most of 2020 due to pandemic restrictions.

"Walking tours are held in various locations across the shire and occur on the last Thursday of each month starting at 9.30am. The one-hour tours cater to all abilities and age," Liza said.

"Social distancing and other current directives from the Victorian Department of Health will apply. Participants need to carry a mask unless they have a valid exemption.

"Participants are also encouraged to come prepared with sun protection, drink-

ing water, wet-weather gear and insect repellent.

"Our monthly walking tours are free of charge and everyone is welcome to join."

This opportunity is funded by the Victorian Government's Community Activation and Social Isolation Initiative and Mount Alexander Shire Council.

Lisa Dennis People of all abilities now have improved access to Castlemaine Community House with the installation of a wheelchair lift and upgraded ramp thanks to state government.

Minister for Higher Education and Training and Skills Gayle Tierney and Bendigo West MP Maree Edwards visited CCH on Thursday to open the new facilities.

The formal opening was cancelled after a community member linked with the centre had advised they were being tested for COVID-19.

A low-key opening took place outside with just the minister, Ms Edwards and the media in attendance.

The works cost $154,000 and included modernising the rear ramp to meet current access standards, the installation of a new folding wheelchair platform lift at the entrance to the facility, handrails, and upgrades to the rear doors - including an automatic door and disabled toilet facilities.

Castlemaine Community House is a Learn Local organisation that provides unique, community-based learning options that focus on the individual needs of learners to enhance their skills for study, work and life. The facility offers a

range of Adult, Community and Further Education pre-accredited education courses such as Art Pathways, Basic Computer Skills and Basic Carpentry.

It is also a vital part of the local community because it houses a Centrelink agency, a financial counselling service, and other amenities including free public internet. It is one of 270 not-for-profit community organisations registered as Learn Locals across Victoria, which deliver services to 30,000 people each year.

Ms Tierney said the project aimed to provide access for all.

"This facility offers important life and job skills and everyone should have access to these opportunities regardless of their abilities," she said.

Ms Edwards said the project was about making sure the Castlemaine Community House was a contemporary facility and to ensure everyone in the local community had equal access to the valuable services it offered.

"This building has been providing educational opportunities to locals for decades. The latest upgrades modernise the facility to ensure it can provide access for people of all abilities and give everyone the chance to engage in the opportunities offered through adult education," she said.

The CFMEU VIC has expressed support of RMIT University research exploring the barriers and supportive enablers of wellbeing in the workplace for women in construction.

The union stated it recognised ongoing improvements must be made to drive change and inclusivity.

The union continues to lead meetings with building industry committees, heads of associations and government industrial relations experts to increase female representation in construction and maintain safe, respectful and supportive workplaces.

They state their commitment to championing and supporting women in industry is evident in their most recent EBA, which includes: - A new industry modernisation clause that requires employers to ensure women employees are treated with respect and without discrimination, harassment or bullying.

- Inductions and ongoing training and education on gendered violence - Increases on parental and partner leave - Flexible work arrangements (trials with builders for shift sharing to help families) - Further amenities and protection for female members In addition to its EBA, the union has also focused on recruiting and training more women in delegate roles and asked for ongoing feedback from officials on worksites to continue to drive change at all levels.

Works to protect waterways

Work to improve the health of Jacksons Creek in Gisborne and Five Mile Creek in Romsey is under way with the removal of several elms and willows along sections of each waterway.

In Romsey, works to rejuvenate sections of Five Mile Creek will continue during February and March.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council began the works in late 2020 and they include the removal of some elms and willows between Main Road and Wrixon Street.

As part of these works, a sealed pathway will also be installed along Pohlman Street from the Lions Park to Robb Drive.

In Gisborne, works will be focused to the rear of Dixon Field. These works aim to improve the environmental values of Jacksons Creek by removing several elms and other woody weeds, and will occur in early February.

Willows are recognised as one of the most serious threats to waterways in temperate Australia. Most types of willows are considered Weeds of National Significance.

Willows, and elms, also spread easily, consume high volumes of water, crowd out native species and clog up waterways with their root systems.

This negatively impacts waterways by reducing water flows and habitat for native species. Their autumn leaf fall can also deplete oxygen levels in waterways.

The trees will be replaced with native species in autumn 2021.

Other initiatives planned for waterways in Gisborne in the next 12 months include removal of the poplars and other woody weeds next to the skate park in Gisborne; and the beginning of larger scale restoration works along the length of Jacksons Creek.

The Gisborne and Mount Macedon Districts Historical Society is holding its annual general meeting on Sunday February 21 with guest speaker Ray Lindner.

Mr Lindner will speak on 'Saving The Major Mitchell Trail' in Victoria. Mr Linder and friends rode the trail by motorcycles in two stages back in 2016, in his travel he found that the trail was being lost.

In 2020 after running into roadblocks and not being able gain any ground with state government departments, Mr Linder requested assistance from all the historical societies which are covered by the trail in Victoria.

In his talk he will cover various aspects of his journey in endeavoring to have this part of our Victorian History saved for future generations.

The AGM will be held at the Gisborne Court House, 4 Hamilton Street, Gisborne, at 2pm (subject to COVID-19 lockdown being lifted). Members and the public are invited to attend.

The state government is calling for applications for director positions on the boards of Victoria's water corporations and catchment management authorities, with young women and Aboriginal Victorians particularly encouraged to apply.

There are up to 130 board appointments to be filled, with the government guaranteeing that at least 50 per cent of those roles will be filled by women.

Applicants who are successful will be responsible for guiding Victoria's water organisations through challenges such as climate change, a shifting and growing population, bushfire response and recovery as well as COVID-19 response.

An Expressions of Interest process is open to fill the board of Greater Western Water - a new body that will be created in July due to the integration of City West Water and Western Water.

Expressions of interest for the water corporation and catchment management positions close on Monday, March 8.

Springs Medical is just beginning to reap the rewards with some of its previous students returning as general practitioners and hospital doctors.

Dr Albert Ip, a medical practitioner at Springs Medical, was appointed as regional academic coordinator for the Deakin Medical School in 2019.

“Deakin RCCS has a priority to attract more medical professionals to regional areas. We are incentivized to reach a target of 50 per cent of our annual intake from regional areas,” Dr Ip said.

“Quality clinical experiences in smaller regional townships help illustrate to graduates that the breadth and depth of experiences, mentors and teachers, rival our base hospital and metropolitan clinical schools counterparts. The Dean’s list representation from RCCS reflects that.”

Dr Beth Quin, a clinical education supervisor at Springs, commented on the importance of clinical experience in the development of new doctors.

Springs Medical has just welcomed two new third-year medical students for their clinical practice. It is the 12th year that Deakin students have been mentored at Springs.

One of the students, Sane Dube, studied and practised radiography in Zimbabwe before migrating to Australia in 2015. She worked in her chosen field in Australia before being admitted to the medical program at Deakin in 2019. She hopes to specialise in women’s health and cardiology.

Another student, Catrina Sturmberg, completed an honours degree in physiotherapy at the University of Newcastle in 2013. She worked in private practice before starting her Doctor of Medicine at Deakin in 2019.

Springs Medical has welcomed Deakin medical students every year for the past 12 years.

New students begin each year in January and complete their studies in November. In addition, they are supported locally by Tim Bach, a community advisory board member.

They are encouraged to engage in the local community through sporting clubs and other associations. Students are available for speaking engagements in the community.

Sane and Catrina are enrolled in the Rural Community Clinical School in the Deakin School of Medicine. The School has affiliated training centres in Daylesford, Bacchus Marsh, Melton, Ararat, Camperdown, Colac, Hamilton, Horsham, Portland and Stawell.

RCCS is a Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship, an innovative educational program in which students learn in an ‘apprenticeship model’ under the guidance of GP supervisors.

In this model, clinical learning is integrated across the year and directed by the students’ clinical experience. Students take part in a range of clinical activities available at their site, such as general practice consulting, maternity units, operating theatre, specialist consulting sessions and community health activities.

Students are encouraged to learn from the patients they see and the conditions they encounter locally. They are also encourage to explore, with home visits, how patients manage between medical appointments.

I'm troubled. I never expected to be, but I am.

We moved to Kyneton many years ago.

We fell in love with it. We found a small bit of heaven in a parcel of land and we moved in. We didn't find Bald Hill Reserve until we'd been here for months. What a gem it is. I place to get away from all the bustle and fuss of the world. But now I'm troubled because the peace of my world is being threatened.

How can there be plans to invade what is now quiet, peaceful grassland, to build a McDonalds, a Bunnings, and who knows what else, close to Bald Hill Reserve.

Some say there'll be more jobs. That's possible, but think of the damage it would do to established local businesses. The hardware store, the petrol station and the nurseries will struggle. Many local businesses will be threatened if the development goes ahead.

The Kyneton I know, and love, would be irrevocably changed.

We moved here from the city, because Kyneton was quiet, and gave us all we need.

Please, Kyneton, stay as you are. Be as one. Don't let new development destroy you.

Re. The proposed supermarket development for the corner of Duke and Forest Streets.

Even though you are a wealthy developer, able to secure a large parcel of land in the centre of town, and able to afford four or more properties and pull down the houses, this does not give you carte blanche to take over public land for your own car parking requirements.

Tim Goodwin, Kyneton To those who consider the Edgecombe Road development as a sign that progress has finally reached Kyneton, I would ask them to reconsider. We have better, local versions of what has been proposed already on offer to locals and tourists alike.

Real progress is forging your own identity, rather than accepting what passes as success just because everyone else seems to have one.

And the rhetoric about jobs for kids should be taken with great caution. To have non-unionised, multinational companies offering jobs to teenagers isn't my idea of good, safe employment.

There are growing businesses in and around Kyneton that offer a proper avenue to trade and careers in numerous fields.

People do travel for good jobs, that is the nature of employment, but you shouldn't settle for a bad job just because it is close to home.

Kyneton is above the ubiquitous mess that is being proposed, and true locals should oppose it for the sake of our community's progress.

Economic interests Janine Mc Dougall, Riddells Creek I am extremely disappointed by the Andrews Government's decision to increase the kangaroo harvesting kill quota by 37,780 on last year to 95,680, and saddened by the devastating effect on our Macedon Ranges wildlife carers ('Roo cull climb hits hard', Midland Express, February 2).

The increased quota will clearly place added pressure and emotional stress on our already stretched wildlife carers, with increased orphaned joeys and injured adult kangaroos who manage to evade being bludgeoned to death or killed outright respectively, to care for.

Moreover, the government's decision to make available kangaroo meat for human consumption by enlarging the market will fuel demand for consistently high kangaroo harvesting kill quotas, thereby threatening the sustainability of our Macedon Ranges kangaroo population by pitting economic interests against conservation.

If this apparently economic and politically motivated decision is not reversed, all of us who oppose it may well be similarly motivated, that is, consumer and voter-wise!

Policy should be scrapped John Keating, real estate agent, Woodend Re: 'Farm build rights gone?' (Midland Express, February 2).

The proposal to remove existing rights to building a dwelling in farming zones on land areas of 40ha or more is bad policy and should be scrapped.

The genesis of the proposal is the policy change 15 years ago that allowed councils to refuse planning permits for dwellings on land under 40ha in rural areas.

Landowners were hoodwinked then by the policy change that was introduced without consultation and applied retrospectively.

Its implementation has been erratic and is bewildering to land owners, professional town planners and even some councillors.

Across the Macedon Ranges most of the beautiful visual tapestry of the rural landscape that we all enjoy has been created over the past 50 years as a consequence of the many residential and farming infrastructure developments and tree plantings and landscaping undertaken by those who have been allowed to build dwellings.

Wherever dwellings have been allowed there is compelling evidence that more trees have been planted, more water conserved, more bird and other wildlife habitat created, the farmland has been better managed and there has been more agricultural production from varied farming activities by owners who want to adopt best farming practices.

Besides housing needs being provided for, local communities have also benefited by having more residents to sustain local shopping centres and schools, and there has been more residents to become members of volunteer community groups such as the CFA, SES and service clubs etc.

There has also been considerable economic flow-on benefits from jobs created for tradespeople, for the council itself from rates, for the state government from stamp duty on property sales and land tax, and for the federal government from capital gains taxes.

Overall the positive contributions to the community have far outweighed any minor negative impacts.

If farming land areas greater than 40ha are not allowed to be built on, land values will be reduced by 50 to 80 per cent.

It is not fair that a planning policy change can devalue a landowner's property by up to 80 per cent.

Self interest guides opinions Neil Barker, Romsey It is predictable but disappointing that so many opinion writers are guided by short-term self interest when it comes to business developments in the Macedon Ranges.

The proposal for a McDonalds outlet in Kyneton is one such example. Arguments that relate to employment, opportunities to take rest breaks, the option of having a choice of food for motorists, and accusations of narrow mindedness are simply used by opportunists to denigrate real community concerns.

They seem to be put forward by people who see opportunities for the promotion of their own businesses or lifestyles rather than the negative impacts that this outlet would have on the wider community.

They include the negative impacts of fast food on Australia's huge obesity problem, the massive impact that these large foreign-owned food chains have on our environment and on global warming, encouraging the employment of our children as hamburger flippers on minimum wages, the proliferation of packaging litter that will inevitably follow, and the loss of a site that could be used by an Australian company for a much more productive purpose, and which could be of benefit to everyone.

For these reasons, the council should reject this proposal at its first opportunity.

Committee riding roughshod Hans Paas, Castlemaine If Merilyn Hoysted ('Far from hiding', Opinions, February 9) had taken more care she would not have made the mistake of suggesting that I was encouraging the committee of MAAW to breach privacy laws.

On the other hand, it is unconstitutional and a breach of the rules to refuse to allow the inspection of the Register of Members or worse to refuse access to the report commissioned by the committee that led to it deciding not to proceed with the establishment of a community vet service and thereby refuse the state government grant that the organisation had applied for.

No 'category of questions' that seeks to shed light on the decision-making processes of the committee should ever be refused merely because the committee seeks to conceal their actions. Ms Hoysted's letter together with the complaints outlined in members' open letter advertisement suggest that MAAW has a committee that is riding roughshod over the members in violation of both the constitution and rules of the organisation.

The 'Friends of MAAW' have a right to have their questions answered and the committee has a duty to be open, transparent and accountable. It is fast becoming clear that they are anything but.

Failure to invest Russell S Mowatt, president, Calder Action Group Inc As we approach a more normalised society post the COVID-19 pandemic, the state government has failed to invest in the upgrade of the Calder Freeway.

In particular the upgrade of the Calder Park Drive/Calder Freeway Overpass for those commuters who use the Calder Freeway on a regular basis.

Unfortunately our advocacy and those of councils and other groups have gone unnoticed and ignored to the detriment of the local communities. To navigate the dangerous stretch between Keilor Park and Calder Park Drive has become unbearable. Additionally the 100km/h has not been reimposed fully to the satisfaction of commuters who are angered and outraged over the lack of any formal funding commitment from the state government.

While the state government continues to approve future housing developments in Sydenham, Diggers Rest, Sunbury and Gisborne South, the traffic congestion and numerous accidents will increase to the detriment of our collective communities.

The government has failed to adequately plan for future road infrastructure in the northwest communities and thereby future generations will ultimately condemn us for!

Julian Perez, regional Victorian general manager, Villawood Properties I note with great interest the insightful comments by your correspondent Grace McCaughey regarding sustainable housing ('Open letter to land developers and municipal councils', Opinions, February 2).

She will be relieved to hear some developers are taking the points she makes very seriously.

In fact, a small new estate that recently sold out at Woodend could well prove the regional start of a serious sustainability surge in Australia's mainstream new-build housing.

The mouse that roared is Villawood Properties' Lonicera community, a 12-lot project with a big heart and the harbinger of bigger aspirations.

Lonicera boasts minimum 7.5-star energy efficiency with detailed design guidelines prescribing rainwater re-use, energy and water-efficient appliances and fittings.

Villawood paid for a renewable and energy efficiency consultant to guide purchasers on passive design features such as thermal mass, orientation, draftproofing, glazing, shading, ventilation and insulation, as well as leading energy efficient fit-outs.

Energy-efficient, all-electric homes powered by solar are on the increase as people seek bill-busting, higher performance, comfortable, healthy housing that stays naturally warm in winter and cool in summer.

We're working with Australia's leading housing energy efficiency experts. We're looking to reduce energy bills substantially, even to zero, while designing homes that can regulate themselves and keep temperatures between 18 and 25 through the peaks of winter and summer.

And energy efficiency is just the start.

Where do they camp?

Paul Ruff, Kyneton How can anyone understand the current arrangements for caravans and RVs around Kyneton and at Mineral Springs reserve?

Currently there is little signage to advise travellers the availability of parking while shopping or longer, at the showgrounds and adjoining cricket/sports oval or wherever.

The RV dump point at mineral springs is connected to a small septic tank and is more often full or out of order than not There is much confusion about the conditions of camping overnight/s at these facilities and around the Kyneton town area, since we no longer have a caravan park.

Put simply, are caravans and RVs allowed to camp there, at the showgrounds, what are the arrangements for parking near the railway station? Are there plans for a dump point anywhere around Kyneton? Is access to there access to the toilets and showers/changing rooms for special cases?

If the answer to any of these is yes, why aren't residents better informed to assist travellers? Where is the signage?

We have a tourist information centre on High Street, there is little signage for it, and very little parking for caravans and RVs about the centre.

Many locals in retirement purchase a

caravan, there are several apps and other media to plan a trip, but as you study the available options you always judge them by the comments about places you know. Sadly, Kyneton and the other towns in the shire don't feature highly on many.

So, as there is hysterics from the tin foil hat brigade about a possibility of Kyneton emerging from sleepy hollow, what could we expect if they were asked to welcome travellers with their own accommodation, especially if they wanted to eat/drink on Piper Street?

A council that really cares for dogs helps owners learn that it isn't always in the dog's best interest to take him everywhere you go.

You may love going to cafes or shops, but your dog might actually prefer being left at home. If only your dog could speak, he might tell you that he is more comfortable there than he is tied up in the street while you casually dine or shop elsewhere.

If dogs really are part of your family, often said to be your fur babies, well, you wouldn't leave your children tied to a street post! So why your dog?

Government-sanctioned slaughter I wonder if those advocating for the slaughter and consumption of our kangaroos (protected species at that) are the same people who are 'outraged' (as they should be), about the whale slaughter in Japan, the seal slaughter in Canada, the poaching of rhino, elephants and tigers for 'traditional' medicine, the slaughter of gorillas and monkeys for 'bushmeat', the bear bile industry, etc. etc.?

Apart from allowing weapon yielding 'professionals' loose in our communities, has anyone really looked into how 'safe' kangaroo meat is to consume? Kangaroos are full of parasites. While I don't condone eating any animal, at least cattle and sheep are drenched in preparation for human consumption. Who drenches kangaroos? Who checks them for diseases?

The world is in the grip of a zoonotic pandemic and yet the government is turning its back on scientific warnings and urging people to eat kangaroo! What is the government thinking?

An estimated three billion animals died in the Black Summer fires and much habitat was destroyed and yet our government wants to kill more?!

As for the argument that the roos are a danger on our roads and a 'pest' to our farmers. If people drove in an appropriate manner in known wildlife areas, there would not be any animal impact 'accidents'. People conveniently forget that ever-expanding property development directly causes the loss of habitat for our wildlife, therefore impacts on where they can live and also takes away our ever-shrinking farmland. Kangaroos are not in 'plague' proportions, they are simply more visible because they have no where left to hide.

Australia has the highest rate of mammalian extinction in the world. The international community will be recognising Australians as the barbarians we have become if the complete disregard and slaughter of our wildlife is sanctioned by a greedy, short-sighted government.

In the words of Gandhi "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated".

Australia has failed miserably in this department.

Champion of Champions Bill West

The stage is set for the Central Highlands Bowling Division's Champion of Champions preliminary rounds at Lancefield this Sunday.

Congratulations go all the players who achieved this distinction; some are first-time winners and others added to multiple titles.

Kyneton's men and women's champions were decided on Friday evening.

Mark Smoljo, runner-up in both Castlemaine and Kyneton championships previously, broke through at last with a thrilling 2523 victory over the in-form Scott Paterson, who is not playing his undoubted skills in pennant this season.

In contrast, Christine Plowman added another title to her record with a decisive victory against Cath Bermingham.

Kyneton Golf's Graham Edwards, undoubtedly the recruit of the season in the CHBD, beat Graeme Williamson in the final at Kyneton Golf.

Edwards, already the CHBD singles and pairs champion this season, will be keen to try and add the Champ of Champs title to his collection.

Smoljo will play Gisborne's Peter Williams in the knockout round on Sunday. Coincidentally, they were both members of the St Kilda Bowling Club about 20 years ago and played plenty of bowls together.

On his home green, Gary Choate - who broke through for his first singles title at Lancefield by edging out Aaron Andrews on Wednesday evening, will be looking to play well.

In the women's draw, the only two CHBD players who gained selection in the regional side, multiple club champion Bev Holmes (Lancefield) and Tricia Odgers (Diggers Rest), play one another in the quarter-finals.

Trentham golf The winner of the first round of the women's silver spoon at Trentham last week was B-grader Anne Cooper, with a nett 69, one clear of Terri O'Çallaghan.

Veronica Maher took out A-grade with a 71 nett, on a countback from Catherine Thomas, an Janine Lord had nett 71 to win C-grade, on a countback from Pat Kinnell.

It's the first season for the GDCA women's competition, and the number of teams are likely to grow next season.

Emily Consiglio is captain of the team, and leads by example with bat and ball.

She is very pleased with the progress made by the players, and the support received from the whole club.

The players were at the forefront of the annual Pink Stumps Day held at Lancefield Park recently, with $755 being raised for the McGrath Foundation - a charitable cause that has grown consistently to help in the battle against breast cancer.

All who supported the family fun day, capped off with the women's team defeating Bacchus Marsh in the 20 overs per side match, were thanked for getting behind the annual fixture.

Sidelined through an ankle injury since early October, highly promising apprentice Tayla Childs rode at the Kyneton jump outs last week, and hopes to be back race riding shortly.

"It's great to see Tayla back riding," Kyneton trainer George Osborne commented. She required ankle surgery after a mishap at Kyneton races on October 13.

Childs, the 24-year-old daughter of former champion jockey Greg Childs, has chalked up 12 winners from 78 rides in her short career.

Her first winner was on the Osborne-trained Reine Happy, at Bendigo, and she was back aboard 'Happy' in one of the 12 jump out heats last week.

Reine Happy, a nine-year-old with 13 wins from 62 starts and $258,990, was purchased by Osborne for $8000 and has been a great money spinner for connections.

He has not raced since Kyneton Cup Day, but is not far off resuming.

There were 71 gallopers taking part in the jump outs, from district and visiting stables.

'WORK IN PROGRESS' Roger's Day, described by Osborne as "a work in progress'' won at Ararat on February 7 at his ninth start, and is likely to have his next outing in a BM64 event at Bendigo next Tuesday.

Well ridden by Tahlia Hope from barrier 1, the four-year-old won the 1300m event by 1.3 lengths, starting a $3.50 favourite.

It was the third run back from a 20-week spell, and connections have been patient since Roger's Day won on debut at Kyneton in September, 2019.

Pagan winner at Kyneton Golf days for Bill West

Former AFL player and dual premiership coach Denis Pagan stunned the racing world when he won the 2020 Victoria Derby with Johnny Get Angry a few months after taking out his trainer's licence.

Pagan has owned plenty of gallopers over the years, but becoming an owner-trainer presented a whole new challenge.

At Kyneton races last week, Pagan won with a filly with the catchy name of My Squeeze Louise, and he is aiming high again - having her entered for the Australian Oaks at Randwick in April.

Winning the Derby with Johnny Get Angry was no mean feat; winning an Australian Oaks would be extraordinary.

having her fifth race start. Pagan has also won a metropolitan race with Frankie Two Angels.

The Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club conducted an eight-event program in fine conditions.

Apprentice Alana Kelly took riding honours with a double, aboard outsider Was Written and Jessica Rae. The latter, trained by Grahame Begg, was most impressive in taking out the 1469m BM58 Handicap by just over five lengths.

The next race meeting at Kyneton takes place on Friday, March 19.

Over the next two Sundays the Gisborne District Cricket Association and the Riddell District Football Netball League will be conducting their annual golf days.

This Sunday, the GDCA is holding a fourperson Ambrose at the Melton Valley Golf Club.

Entries close tomorrow ($200 a team).

On Sunday, February 28, the RDFNL holds its big golf day at the Eynesbury Golf Club.

Those interested can enter in teams of four, or as individuals. Entry fee is $150 a player.

There's also the chance for district businesses to be involved in sponsoring hole-inones. And there's no restriction on bragging rights from either day, as some of the cricketers and footballers around the area show off their golfing talents.

1. Players are asked to collect bomb and shrapnel splinters to save them causing damage to the moving markers.

2. In competitions, during gunfire or while bombs are falling, players may take cover without penalty for ceasing play.

3. The position of known delayed active bombs are marked by red flags at a reasonable, but not guaranteed, safe distance therefrom.

4. Shrapnel and/or bomb splinters on the fairways, or in bunkers within a club's length of a ball, may be moved without penalty, and no penalty shall be incurred if a ball is thereby caused to move accidentally.

5. A ball moved by enemy action may be replaced, or if lost or destroyed, a ball may be dropped no nearer the hole, without penalty.

6. A ball lying in a crater may be lifted or dropped no nearer the hole without penalty.

7. A player whose stroke is affected by the simultaneous explosion of a bomb may play another ball from the same place. Penalty one stroke.

Kyneton Netball Association is looking forward to the 2021 season and welcoming kids back to the courts.

The association held its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday February 9 and has announced a new committee for the 2021 season, led by president James Bone and vice-president Nikki Young.

"After a difficult 2020, KNA is looking forward to seeing our local kids back on the netball courts contributing to all that is great about our community and enjoying local sport again," Bone said.

A registration session will be held on Sunday February 21 from 11am to 1pm at the Kyneton Showgrounds.

This date is in conjunction with the Kyneton Football Netball Club launch day, so if you have kids who would like to register for football too, do it all on the one day!

A free event will follow the registration and everyone is welcome to go

Tournament pays off When the COVID pandemic prevented Romsey Bowling Club holding its annual Grand Final Eve Tournament, it was decided there had to be a replacement.

It was decided that a midweek tournament specifically for retirees would be held late in the season, in the hope bowls was allowable with few restrictions.

The move proved to be a winner when 48 players (12 teams) from near and far came along on Thursday to support the event.

The very social format was two ends of 15 ends, and an enjoyable lunch, with many of the competing teams indicating they would enter again.

"We were more than happy with the response and will be looking to do the same next season,"stated tournament director/club secretary Graeme Cuthbert.

"Our midweek bowlers chipped in and the day went smoothly."

Midweek bowls wrap up

Three home and away rounds remain before the semi-finals in this season's Central Highlands midweek bowls.

Today's scheduled round has been abandoned due to the COVID pandemic lockdown. There are three divisions in the midweek comp, with Gisborne and Kyneton fighting for the division one double chance behind tearaway leader Romsey.

Kyneton is a clear leader in division two, and Woodend leads the way in division three, 10 points clear of Romsey.

The majority of bowlers in the midweek comp play in CHBD Saturday pennant; the highest profile player is Ethan Higgins who lines up with South Bendigo as a skipper on Saturdays and plays for his home town Gisborne on Tuesdays.

The sudden imposition of the five-day COVID lockdown meant the annual Richard Buckley Fours Tournament at Kyneton on Sunday had to be called off.

Call-off impact

There were winners and losers in Central Highlands pennant bowls as a result of all matches being abandoned, with points shared, on Saturday.

Round 13 did not take place because of the five-day pandemic lockdown.

Ladder-leader Lancefield should now retain the double chance in division one, with Kyneton (second) and Kyneton Golf (third) playing each other in the final round. In the top division, only two home and away rounds remain.

This Saturday, Lancefield is at home to Romsey (fourth) having won their mid-season clash by 27 shots, and the Tigers go to Diggers Rest in the final round.

Kyneton is at home to Gisborne, and cellar-dweller Diggers Rest welcome Kyneton Golf hoping to upset a boilover victory from earlier in the season.
