Gisborne has been described as a "victim of its own success" in plans to expand the town's Olde Time Market.

Objectors say the market's popularity has increased traffic and parking problems and damaged the reserve.

While some residents have called for the market to be relocated, downsized or re-thought, organisers want to formalise expansion.

Market operator, Gisborne GREAT, has applied to extend the market along Hamil-

ton Street to include additional area to the east. They also seek to amend the permit use to "market (arts and farm produce)" to operate 9am-2pm on the first Sunday of each month.

GREAT president John Frearson told

councillors last week the move would accommodate needs of the town attraction.

"We have been here since 2004, front and centre of a significant part of the Gisborne social tapestry," he said.

Whoever thought today's kids believe their food comes from a plastic pack clearly haven't seen something like the excursion happening out at Harcourt's Organic Farming Co-op orchard on Friday.

There co-op members, The Orchard Keepers, hosted a special visit by Elphinstone Primary School in a boots-on educational exercise assisted by a Victorian Farmers Federation Kids Ag Vic Grant.

"We're just bringing the kids to check out how fruit grows," teacher's aid Nicole Dubbeld told the Express during the leafy tour in perfect conditions.

"They love it and they love being outside."

The weather was on side and the sparkling outdoors morning featured a guided tour of the orchard during which Orchard Keepers like Ingrid Phyland talked the students through the basics of organic fruit production.

Ingrid led the kids and their adult ac-

complices through the orchards with a running commentary on fruit production today and a bit about the history of the Harcourt area's fruit growing.

"It's great. We would love to do more of this," Ingrid told the Express mid-tour.

"It's great that young kids understand where their food comes from."

The day covered everything from pollination, with a particular interest from students in the native blue-banded bee, and guest presentations from local expert orchardist Katie Finlay covering grafting and growing fruit trees from cuttings.

Fellow Orchard Keeper Yoann Le Guen demonstrated the finer points of the correct way to pick fruit without damaging the tree for future cropping.

A picnic and a 2kg fruit picking challenge – complete with fruit tasting – were all part of the day's fun.

"It's pretty cool," said grade four student Adele Downie.

"Lot's of fun," agreed young Gilbert McDougall.

A Romsey community meeting will discuss major issues for the town as vital future planning begins to take shape.

The meeting aims to give residents the chance to air concerns and share thoughts on Romsey’s future following early consultation for a new town structure plan.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council's new structure plan will determine how Romsey develops to the year 2050 and where long-term settlement boundaries are drawn.

The community meeting will focus on five key topics: expanding the town boundary on premium agricultural land, sewerage, infrastructure and suitability for greater demand, retaining small-town charm, and sustainability and the natural environment.

The end of the meeting will be an ‘open floor’ opportunity for individuals to speak for up to four minutes on any topic relating to the town’s future planning.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council representatives, councillors and council consultants on the structure plan have been invited to attend to record the conversation and questions.

The meeting will be held at the Romsey Mechanics Institute tonight (March 15) from 6.30pm to about 8.30pm.

Mr Frearson told councillors GREAT was "happy to take council's expert opinion on how to maximise the benefit and minimise the footprint".

"We're very conscious that we're not the only user, we're also conscious that Gisborne's a victim of its own success in so many ways," he said.

"It's become such an attractive place and if we were not to be there, there's no guarantee that any of these areas won't be overused."

Macedon Ranges Council is expected to make a decision at its planning delegated committee meeting on April 13.

Community lunches in Castlemaine and Maldon will host a 2-for-1 lunch deal this month, which is a great excuse to knock on your neighbour’s door and say hello.

Traffic diversions

The 2-for-1 lunch deal is available on the following days, no bookings required:

The intersection of Melbourne Road and Kilmore Road at Gisborne is being upgraded with a new roundabout.

The bridge over Bunjil Creek, located adjacent to the intersection, is being removed and replaced with a wider bridge to provide enough space for traffic lanes and shared user paths as part of the new roundabout.

The Melbourne Road and Kilmore Road intersection and Melbourne Road between Fisher Street and Kilmore Road is currently closed to through traffic for approximately four months to enable works on the bridge over Bunjil Creek. Kilmore Road between Melbourne Road and the bridge over Jacksons Creek is also closed for approximately four months.

This temporary road closure will ensure the complete removal of the existing bridge and construction of the new bridge is done as quickly as possible, minimising disruption to the community.

Drivers are asked to detour via Station Road during the closure. The detour will add approximately five minutes to your journey and up to 15 minutes during peak times, so allow for this extra travel time to ensure you get to your destination on time.

To deter traffic from shortcutting on local streets when detours are in place, ‘Local residents only’ signs will be installed at the Melbourne Road and Fisher Street intersection and temporary speed humps will be installed on Fisher Street between Melbourne Road and Aitken Street.

To help improve traffic flow and safety, right-turn movements will be removed from the Fisher Street and Aitken Street intersection and parking on Fisher Street between Melbourne Road and Aitken Street will also be prevented.

New grant aims to address housing needs

Council has secured a $200,000 grant to address growth and housing needs in the shire.

The funding will be used to prepare a housing and neighbourhood character strategy for the towns of Castlemaine, Campbells Creek and Chewton.

In the coming months, Council will prepare a discussion paper which will be released for community input in late 2022.

Roadhouse plans progress Plans are progressing to relocate and upgrade the Carlsruhe BP roadhouse to create a freeway service centre and restaurant.

Macedon Ranges Shire councillors heard submitters to the proposal last week including the proponents and four written objections.

The plan would see two main access points for the service centre provided from the north directly off the Freeway off ramp, the other off Springvale Road.

Bentley Property Group's Andrew Ferguson told councillors the rebuild would upgrade the 1970s facility.

"It's about 50 years old now and it's time to renew it," he said.

"Now it will have better facilities, more truck parking, a parkland area for families to stop, plus an electric car charge station."

The design is a copy of the Caltex/Hungry Jacks service centre off Princes Highway at Longwarry.

Mr Ferguson said no agreement was yet finalised with an operator of the fast-food restaurant. The same operators of the current

facility will be operating the new facilities.

"It's quite a popular site as it is. It has a similar volume to that of the Kyneton service station. We would expect with the access, and more people being able to use it to come straight off the freeway, that it would increase," Andrew said.

The site will remain a 24-hour, seven-day station and registered as a VicRoads rest-stop.

Managing director of Inception Planning, Leah Clark,e said the service centre would have a greater set-back within the site, "nestled into the landscape". She said there would be more opportunities for landscaping.

Four objections outlined concerns relating to traffic, light, noise and increased customers.

They also expressed concern that the changes would mean less traffic and tourism for Woodend.

Councillors are expected to make a decision on the application at their March 23 meeting.

There is more than $111 million in forgotten cash the State Revenue Office is holding to return to Victorians.

Last week, local MP Mary-Anne Thomas said there was more than 10,000 entitlements to claim across the region.

Ms Thomas calculated 5310 for Macedon Ranges totalling $902,206, Mount Alexander with 1860 totalling $234,460, Hepburn with 1085 totalling $120,754, and Moorabool with 2602 totalling $264,122.

"This money is made up of share dividends, salaries and wages, proceeds from a sale, or rents and bonds that have been unclaimed for at least 12 months," Ms Thomas said.

"So if you think you might have some money you've forgotten about – jump online, put in your details and you’ll know within seconds."

Fans of our feathered friends are in for a treat – or should that be tweet? – this month with one of the area's best-known bird-watching exponents, Jane Rusden, preparing to lead a free guided tour of birdlife in the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens.

Jane is convenor of Birdlife Australia's Castlemaine branch and when she leads the upcoming stroll she'll be in company with another couple of particularly accomplished bird watchers.

"We will have Damian Kelly, author of several books about walks and bird watching, join us," says Jane ahead of the tour.

Castlemaine-based Kelly is author of Castlemaine Bird Walks and also the more recently released Victorian Bird Walks.

"We'll also be accompanied by a very young bird watcher who is only about 11 years old but has written and illustrated a bird guide for Chewton," Jane says.

"This bird walk will also be really good for identifying some of the birds that people will have in their own gardens.

"But the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens also has water birds and some big parrots.

"We will also talk about the powerful owls but won’t see them as it's not breeding season."

Supported by Birdlife Australia, the hour-long walking tour will set out from the gardens tea rooms at 9.30am on Thursday March 31 with participants welcome to simply

roll up – shortly before the 9.30am start time.

Besides the obvious avian preoccupation, there's also a distinct health focus with the hour-long stroll organised

by Castlemaine District Community Health as part of its regular monthly walks program.

Castlemaine Health health promotion officer, Liza Shaw, says the walk will be suitable for people of all ages with participants advised to bring a hat, water bottle and face mask in case social distancing cannot be maintained.

"We warmly welcome our regular participants and any new guests," she says.

"It’s a great reason to head outdoors and enjoy some fresh air."

Jane has a final word of advice for those planning to participate – "bring your binoculars if you have some,” she says.

Athol Guy is performing Macedon for a special fundraiser event.

The Seekers Story with Athol Guy is coming to Macedon's Jubilee Hall for a fundraising weekend on March 19-20.

The event is in support of MacGregor’s Farm Dementia Respite in Woodend.

The Anglican Parish of Gisborne and Woodend Lifestyle Carers Group are thrilled to jointly host two performances, an art sale and more in support of this local project.

Local legend Athol Guy presents a special The Seekers’ Diamond Jubilee Preview including his mini documentary, 60 Years and 100 Million Albums, with unique footage from their very last concert from Royal Albert Hall London.

The snow gum has been identified as a target species to monitor.

Dieback identified in snow gum populations on Mount Macedon and surrounds have been flagged as a cause for concern.

Macedon Ranges mayor Jennifer Anderson said the snow gum had been identified as a target species to monitor.

She said the council wanted to develop a better understanding of where they occurred, and their population health.

“Council is working with ecologists, landcare groups and the Arthur Rylah Institute to record and monitor the health of snow gum populations across the shire and potential local climate change impacts,” she said.

“Snow gums have excellent readily identifiable features, which mean they are a great plant spe-

cies for citizen science, where the public is actively involved in the research activity.

“Council is inviting landholders across the shire to be part of a community project to help us understand and monitor the local ecology of an iconic eucalyptus species and the local impacts of climate change, while building community awareness and knowledge."

In the Macedon Ranges, populations of snow gum, occur in montane grassy woodland and plains grassy woodland across the peaks and plains of the shire.

Using a citizen science approach, the council and its community partners are looking to map and monitor population health on private land on Mount Macedon,

in the Cobaw Biolink and across the Riddells Creek, Ashbourne and Baynton-Sidonia areas, where snow gums are known to occur.

Gisborne Foodworks staff are gearing up for Good Friday.

Fire alarm confusion

CFA units responding to an alarm at Kyneton Primary School last Monday afternoon were sent to both the new and old school sites due to confusion over which school location was the source of the alarm.

While the initial callout was specifically to the new school on Edgecombe Road, the Department of Education alarm company specified the "old bluestone building", which of course is located at the old Baynton Street primary school site. Brigade members realised the mistake and units were sent to both sites just to be safe. The department later advised they would rectify the alarm and update the correct addresses.

Gisborne Foodworks is getting behind the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal in a big way.

The store aims to raise $35,000 in this year's fundraising efforts with plenty of fun and entertainment planned.

In store tastings, an animal farm and a special visit from the Easter Bunny will be part of the Good Friday festivities.

Of course, there will be plenty of opportunity for customers to make a donation on the day.

Store manager Braydan Rodgers said Gisborne Foodworks had been involved in the fundraiser since 2011 and team members were excited to continue the tradition.

"It's going to be a fun day and we really want to encourage people to come along and show their support," he said.

The store will be open from 9am to 1pm and staff working on the day will be donating their time. All proceeds will go to the Good Friday Appeal, which supports ill children and their families.

Is your COVID-19 Vaccination ‘up to date’?

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has updated the definition from ‘fully vaccinated’ to ‘up to date’, emphasising the importance of being ‘up to date’ with immunisation particularly for those who are at higher risk of severe disease. To now be considered up to date, you must receive all recommended doses for your age and health status.

People aged 70+ are now eligible for the in-home vaccination service for their first, second or third dose, making it easier for them to remain up to date. Not only will those aged 70+ be vaccinated, everyone in the household that is eligible can also be vaccinated during the same visit. In-home vaccination is also available at aged care facilities.

It is recommended that everyone five years of age and older get a COVID-19 vaccine in Australia. To book your vaccination appointment, call the Coronavirus Hotline on 1800 675 398 (8am–8pm, 7 days a week) or visit coronavirus.vic.gov.au/book-your-vaccine-appointment.

Powercor crews believe they may have found the cause of multiple power outages in Macedon Ranges and Hepburn Shire.

Last week crews inspected and replaced a variety of items – lighting surge arrestors, fuses, insulators, and high-voltage leads – on seven high-voltage power poles along Martin Street South in Blackwood.

After careful examination of these items, crews found an insulator that had visible burn marks indicating a fault had occurred.

This is consistent with what engineering teams expected to be found from the type of fault believed to have caused the outages.

Customers in the area have experienced seven unplanned outages since February 23.

The insulator has now been replaced and taken back to the Ballarat depot for further studies.

To be certain there are no other faults occurring, Powercor is continuing to test the network. Crews will be closely monitoring while these tests occur and will be available to respond quickly if issues occur.

These results follow work conducted over the past fortnight, which narrowed down the issue on the more than 260-kilometre line to just a 20-kilometre section, and then finally a 400m section in Blackwood.

Powercor will be continuing to update customers with any new developments. Customers can also call 13 22 06.

Castlemaine musician, storyteller and now OAM, Jan 'Yarn' Wositzky will celebrate five decades of music and yarns with a special 50th anniversary performance, Thank You For The Welcome, at Castlemaine's historic Theatre Royal this Sunday.

The performance, proudly presented by Yarn Productions and Steampacket, will gather a half-century of songs and stories into one incredible heartfelt show.

Beginning in 1971 as a founder of the legendary Bushwackers Band, Wositzky has gone on to produce acclaimed theatre shows such as The Go-Between: William Murrungurk Buckley; best-selling books with Wardaman elder Yidumduma Bill Harney and Phar Lap's strapper, Tommy Woodcock; numerous history features for Radio National; award-winning television documentaries with Yanyuwa and Garrwa people of Borroloola; goldfields CDs and audio tours, and lots more.

Thank You for The Welcome is Wositzky's song to honour Australia's Indigenous people – a theme that returns throughout the show.

Wositzky says the performance will be packed full of all his favourite stuff.

Mount service to go ahead

The Mount Macedon Anzac Day Dawn Service Committee has announced it will conduct a service at the Mount Macedon War Memorial Cross this Anzac Day. “I’m very excited that we can return to this spectacular setting for this year’s Dawn Service,” said Bruce Mildenhall, chair of the Dawn Service Committee.

“It will be great for the community to rally around this iconic event once more."

The dawn service is a commemorative event that honours the sacrifice of veterans, salutes their service and seeks to learn from the experiences of servicemen and servicewomen.

This year’s dawn service will pay tribute to those Indigenous people who have supported our soldiers, sailors and aviators in various parts of the world over numerous conflicts.

The Mount Macedon Anzac Dawn Service attracts more than 3000 attendees from local communities, metropolitan Melbourne and interstate.

The service is possible through the generous support of several sponsors, and dozens of volunteers.

In order to provide a safe and orderly event, private vehicles (including cars, motorcycles and bicycles) are not permitted to travel to the Mount Macedon War Memorial Cross on Anzac Day morning.

To attend the service people must book a seat in one of the buses that move people to and from the cross.

Bus services operate from Gisborne, Woodend, Sunbury, Kyneton, Riddells Creek, Lancefield and Romsey with continuous shuttle buses from Macedon’s Tony Clarke Reserve from 4.15am.

Attendees are requested to ensure that they dress for the weather and bring a water bottle and a torch. Attendance is free but any donation towards the ongoing conduct of the Dawn Service is appreciated. Attendees may also wish to purchase a snack or drink.

This year’s Dawn Service will also be live-streamed with details to be announced later.

The Castlemaine music community is coming together to hold a fundraising concert to support their friends and fellow musicians in Cuba – El Son Entero.

Local band Son Quba and salsa dancer Camila Serrano are coordinating the special event at the Theatre Royal Castlemaine on Saturday March 26.

Son Quba band member, Stephen Breheny, said many would remember the memorable performance by El Son Entero that opened the 2015 Castlemaine State Festival.

Due to COVID outbreaks and government restrictions in Cuba, the group has been unable to work for the past 18 months.

Local musos inspired by the Cuban music group wanted to lend them a hand.

"The March 26 concert will see us join together to help our fellow performers, El Son Entero, who inspired us to continue playing Cuban music," Breheny said.

"We aim to use the opportunity that we have here in Australia to perform live music and dance. The evening will then be headlined by the band themselves with a livestream from Cuba on the Theatre Royal cinema screen!"

Son Quba will also perform a song written by the lead singer Jorge Luaces, who died from cancer shortly after returning home to Cuba after their Australian Tour.

El Son Entero were also instrumental in presenting Cuban music to Castlemaine Secondary College.

The musical director at the school at the time, Kirsten Boerema, and the band’s leader, Michel, were the driving force behind the Gala Performance during the 2015 State Festival highlighting the talent of CSC's Music Faculty student orchestra.

After the band left, some of the students wanted to continue playing Cuban music.

Breheny, who has been travelling to Cuba for many years, taking musical instruments to donate to the Schools of Music along with several other members of the Cuba Cultural Alliance, agreed to continue teaching all that he knew of Cuban music to many of the existing mem-

bers of 'Son Quba' here in Castlemaine.

Today, all of the musicians in Son Quba are highly proficient musicians in their own right, playing in several bands throughout Victoria.

In fact, four of the band members are studying at the Victorian College of the Arts.

Aryo Hall is now teaching music at Maryborough High School. He also is director of the band The Seducephones. Twins Eli and Emmanuel Hall are both members of Son Quba and the Seducaphones.

Haley Goddefroy is currently playing in both Son Quba and the KGB (Klesma, Gypsy, Balkan) band.

When Kyneton received 75mm of intense rainfall on January 27, the last thing Angie expected when she opened the door to Angie’s Café and Bake Shop on High Street, was to wade into water on her café floor.

The CFA’s sandbagging prevented some of the rain that followed over the next two days, but it couldn’t undo the damage to the café from the initial flood.

It’s been a tough two years for Angie as she navigated COVID, staff shortages and then the January storms.

Having grown up in Kyneton and known by many of the locals, Angie said it had been difficult to keep going.

"But I have some amazing customers that have continued to support me over the last two years. They keep me going," she said.

Not one to give up and thanks to the generosity of the Kyneton Bowling Club, Angie’s Café can now be found upstairs, above the club in the same location as the Jack High Bar and Bistro.

The lockdowns and pandemic deprivations through which we have all lived in recent months have prevented one special band of grumpy Guildford locals fully paying their respects to a celebrated local who tragically lost his life in 2020.

All that is about to change next Sunday March 27 when the evocatively monikered Guildford Grumpies host their Peter Turner Memorial Show and Shine.

"There is a lot planned for the event, with historic cars and motorbikes travelling from across the state to pay their respects to the Grumpies co-founder Peter Turner, who was tragically killed in a car accident in 2020," Grumpies' secretary Steve Cole says.

"The Grumpies have not been able to say their goodbyes due to pandemic restrictions for the past 18 months, but plan to make up for this with an event to be remembered.

"The Guildford township has received a makeover from the Mount Alexander Shire Council, and the John Powell Reserve will be a throbbing sea of activity with a huge turnout of vehicles, community stalls and good-times live music set to kick off at 9am," Steve says.

"Mr Turner's legacy lives on through the activities of the Guildford Grumpies and the Guildford Grumpies Car Club.

"We distribute thousands of dollars annually from our fundraising efforts such as events like the upcoming show and shine.

"Peter Turner would be proud of what has happened with his club, which started 10 years ago with just 12 men looking to be of value to their own community, and now boasts well over 100 people."

Steve says this month's Show and Shine will feature a good variety of community stalls and some live entertainment including local acts One Cockatoo, Judy and the Upright Gentlemen and Marvin Lorne.

As part of the upcoming Kyneton Contemporary Art Triennial, artist Steven Rhall will exhibit new work at the iconic Bolton Hall on Epping Street.

The Hall was once a private schoolhouse owned by Miss Ray Begg, who bequeathed it and the surrounding land to establish homes for ‘the aged’.

The building itself is a living monument to the value of education, of caring for the elderly and the vision of a pioneering woman.

Betty McClure, keeper of local historical knowledge, says Miss Begg was a woman of vision.

"She understood that aged care was going to be a growing concern for society. And providing the dignity of having somewhere safe and comfortable to live in later years was an important service to the community.”

For local arts organisation, Kyneton Contemporary, the old school hall is an ideal venue to exhibit the work of Steven Rhall, a Taungurung man who is exploring the responsibilities and pressures of receiving and carrying forward cultural knowledge. Through his five-channel video installation, Rhall considers quitting art all together that so he can attend to this learning.

The artist says his work is a response to his Taungurung heritage and potential for connection to Taungurung Country.

For Kyneton Contemporary, facilitating connections to place is a key reason for commissioning artists to research, develop and present their artwork in Kyneton.

The event is designed to celebrate the community’s histories and its lived experiences while allowing artists an opportunity to experiment.

“As a site for education and as a resource for caring, the building is a monument to Miss Ray Begg – a woman with a powerful community spirit whose impact and influence on people’s wellbeing continues to this day,” Kyneton Contemporary’s Kent Wilson said.

With ten other projects across the town, at venues like the Kyneton Mechanics Institute, the Botanic Gardens, Scout Hall, Freemasons Hall and Watts Pavilion at the showgrounds, the Kyneton Contemporary Art Triennial offers a smorgasbord of interesting art and interesting insights into the history, the environment and the communities of regional Victoria.

Artists from Western Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, New Mexico and Melbourne, join local artists Ravi Avasti and Adam Lee for this multi-site exhibition across the town of Kyneton.

It’s the end of summer, and Coliban Water storages continue to be in a strong position.

Executive general manager of climate and population adaptation, Steve Healy, said the three Coliban River catchment storages, near Kyneton, were at 84 per cent, 1512 megalitres more than March last year.

"Our water storage position is strong right now, and with rain predicted to be above median levels during autumn, it will set us up well for the rest of the year," he said.

Although February was dry, greater than long-term average rainfall was recorded at Malmsbury over summer.

Inflows to storages were below the longterm average, but 918 megalitres more than the same period last year.

It’s not unusual to experience less inflows than rainfall due to the timing and intensity of rainfall, which will continue to be impacted by the effects of climate change with hotter and drier seasons.

"One way our customers can help us mitigate this is using water efficiently by following the tips and ideas from the ‘Target Your Water Use’ program that educates and encourages regional Victorians to use their water wisely," Mr Healy said.

"Our customers are accustomed to the

Permanent Water Saving Rules are a set of common-sense rules to make sure people use water efficiently and apply to all towns in our region when no water restrictions are in force.

The rules apply to urban customers for watering gardens and lawns, fountains and water features, and cleaning outside.

“Efficient water usage is everyone’s responsibility. Everything we do to conserve water – even in the cooler months – helps our overall water security," Mr Healy said.

While it was a mild summer, the final days of 2021 saw temperatures soar and Bendigo residents used the highest amount of water for the year. On December 31, the mercury reached 37 degrees and local residents recorded 76.8 megalitres of water usage, beating the previous 2021 highest of 75.60 megalitres from January 24.

"The spell of hot days saw our customers watering gardens and lawns, and staying cool," Mr Healy said.

"Using water efficiently saves water, energy and money. Every drop we conserve helps secure our water future and maintain greener and liveable communities – giving us water to live, grow and enjoy."

PJ is a professional gardener in Kyneton. She did her horticultural and gardening apprenticeship with The Melbourne City Council.

Her love of gardening started through her mum who was a passionate and excellent gardener.

Although PJ was not totally convinced about being a gardener, she certainly has no regrets.

After living on Flinders Island for some time, PJ and her then husband moved to Springhill where they established a vineyard.

With three children, plus geese, chickens and the vineyard, gardening was a full-time exercise but often came last with so many other demands on her time.

Following on from her connection to the vineyard, PJ began gardening professionally and has never looked back.

Mary Ellis from Glen Lyon and Jan Thomas from Birthday Villa were two of her founding clients and they still use PJ’s services.

"Gardening is now a full-time passion and I never stop learning," PJ says.

She says she feels very fortunate that everyone she has worked with has had faith and trust in her and appreciated her work, which she feels, all in all, is something of a gift.

Fifteen years ago PJ arrived in Kyneton and was constantly gardening.

She met Margot McDonald, founder of The Garden Tap Nursery, whom PJ says opened her eyes to different plants and to being enquiring. This helped establish a deeper understanding of variety and options for planting in the region.

PJ and her partner Craig have now built a rather beautiful new home in Kyneton near the river walk on the Campaspe River.

PJ had some great plans for a garden of restraint – simple, tranquil and easy to look after – but PJ got a little bit diverted and keeps finding new plant ideas and just has to try them out!

Starting the garden from scratch, PJ had her idea of what she wanted and began with planting out the large items, ornamental pears, hornbeams, cyprus, olives and japanese maples. Once established, the fun filling-in bit started. To illustrate their enthusiasm and energy, PJ and Craig had tandem trailers filled to overflowing with plants, which they planted out in just two weeks.

To create privacy, PJ established a hedge of Elaeagnus x ebbingei silverberry. While a hardy and attractive hedging plant, PJ has found they seem to struggle with cold (it can get very frosty and cold close to the river area). To combat this, before winter hits she is going to dig in some organic compost and gypsum to help warm the soil a little ... time will tell.

PJ has planned her garden to encourage local birds, however there are a lot of cats she has to work around plus dominant birds such as blackbirds and indian miners.

But she seems to be winning this battle with the native garden section. This section is planted out in granitic sand with natives like correas, grasses, teucrium fruiticans, some eucalyptus and water feature, capped off with a large fig tree.

The garden features sections designated by some beautiful stone walls, gravel paths and water features. The woodland section is particularly beautiful with bradford ornamental and japanese maples. These are underplanted with hellebores, cornus alba, gallipoli poppies, orlaya and Daucus carota, all providing a seasonal colour pallet. To provide colour and movement, there are Cotonis (smoke bush), Miscanthus grasses and society garlic.

"We need to look more closely at why diet has a greater impact on brain volume in men than in women," Dr Macpherson said.

"But, overall, these findings suggest midlife may be a really important life stage to address unhealthy eating habits, not just to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, but to protect brain health.

"Following the WHO healthy eating guidelines may be the best place to start," Dr Macpherson said.

Choose a career you love

People who eat a healthy diet during middle age have a larger brain volume than those with less healthy diets, new research reveals.

The findings suggest food choices in midlife may reduce the risk of dementia and other degenerative brain disorders as we age.

Dr Helen Macpherson from Deakin University’s Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition studied the eating habits and brain volumes of adults aged between 40 to 65 and found those who ate a healthy variety of foods, including plenty of vegetables, fruit, grains and good oils, had more grey matter and larger brain volume than those whose diets included less of those foods.

Dr Macpherson said the findings, published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, were significant because they suggested lifelong healthy eating habits were needed to protect against neurodegeneration as we age.

"There is no blood test that can detect dementia during midlife, but brain volume is an important indicator of brain health," Dr Macpherson said.

"Brain volume begins to decrease, relative to head size, from midlife into old age and we know increased brain shrinkage can precede dementia.

"This research tells us that diet quality needs to be addressed well before old age so that people can give themselves the best chance of reducing dementia risk."

Dr Macpherson, who is a National Health and Medical Research Council and Australian Research Council Dementia Research Training Fellow, looked at data from nearly 20,000 participants in the UK Biobank, a globally accessible database containing genetic and health information from half a million people.

The participants in Dr Macpherson’s study completed diet recall analysis and had an MRI to assess brain volume. The study looked at three measures of diet quality.

"We looked at the Mediterranean Diet Score, or how closely people’s diets aligned with the Mediterranean diet, as this particular dietary pattern has been widely studied in relation to dementia risk and brain health," Dr Macpherson said.

– What is it and can it help me?

Could you have glaucoma?

About 300,000 Australians are currently living with glaucoma and only half of them know it.Glaucoma is a disease that causes progressive damage to the optic nerve of the eye. When detected early, irreversible vision loss can be prevented.

The Australian Society of Ophthalmologists is urging at-risk Australians to book an eye exam because the test could save their sight.

Those most at risk include people 40 and over with a family history of glaucoma, people aged over 50, anyone of African or East Asian descent, diabetics and people with a history of high or low blood pressure.

ASO president and Sydney-based glaucoma surgeon, Associate Professor Ashish Agar, said the coronavirus pandemic had deterred people from keeping up to date with important preventative health checks such as eye examinations, which had stifled glaucoma detection rates even further.

"If you are among the identified risk groups, then go and have that eye exam. Your sight cannot be replaced," Prof Agar said.

In his practice, Prof Agar treats many glaucoma patients every day.

He said it was always devastating when a patient’s diagnosis came too late.

"The worst-case scenario is if a patient has gone years with glaucoma," he said.

"Probably the second-worse case scenario is when someone has been flagged for glaucoma by their GP/optometrist but hasn’t followed through with an ophthalmology review.

"In both cases if I had been able to see them earlier I could have saved them from losing their sight. Once it’s gone from glaucoma, there’s nothing we can do to get it back," he said.

Glaucoma can be managed if detected early and Prof Agar said treatment advances were being made all the time.

Glaucoma ranks as the world’s leading cause of irreversible blindness. It is associated with an increase in intraocular pressure that can damage the optic nerve. The level of elevated eye pressure that causes progressive damage to the optic nerve varies between people. Loss of sight due to glaucoma is often gradual and a considerable amount of peripheral (side) vision may be lost before there is an awareness of any problem. Once vision loss has occurred, however, it is irreversible.

You might be surprised to find out that exercise physiology is a nationally accredited, science-based, research-backed, health profession that has been around for more than 60 years.

An exercise physiologist, or EP for short, is a professional in the prescription, design and management of exercise as an intervention for a wide array of health conditions.

According to the Exercise is Medicine Australia group, "Exercise is the best, cheapest and most accessible medicine available, and in order to improve chronic disease mortality rates, we need to move more".

The research continuously backs up this statement, with exercise being recognised as an effective treatment in the management of many chronic conditions.

It often can have as much, and sometimes more, positive effect than pharmacological interventions, and when combined with medical management is often recognised as the best course of treatment for many conditions. An EP can help with a variety of conditions, commonly including; * Diabetes and pre-diabetes * Cardiovascular disease * Obesity and weight management * Different forms of cancer * Depression, anxiety and mental health conditions. * Falls prevention and balance improvement * Osteoarthritis * Osteoporosis and bone density issues. * Chronic respiratory diseases including COPD and asthma * Musculoskeletal injuries * Neuromuscular diseases * Post-surgical rehabilitation How do you know what exercise to do for your given condition? How much? How often? What type?

What are the things that you should avoid given your condition?

Answering these questions is where your EP comes in. Like other forms of medicine, exercise is most effective when you get the right type, the right dose, and complete it in the right frequency.

Your EP will take a history of your condition, perform a thorough assessment, and come up with recommendations suited to your individual needs.

Your EP will then be able to prescribe a program, monitor your progress and make adjustments or changes as needed along the way.

An EP is also there to listen, they understand it’s

not purely a one-size-fits-all approach. They work with you to make sure that the medicine (exercise), isn’t just good for you, its enjoyable too.

Exercise physiologists can be seen by anyone, though several programs exist to help get you started as well. There are schemes covered under Medicare, including one specifically for diabetes management. EP’s see clients under NDIS, DVA, along with TAC and Work Cover for functional and capacity building, along with exercise as part of rehabilitation, strengthening, and for return to work, sport, or activities of everyday life.

Last week’s front page article of the Midland Express, ('Farmers forced out?', March 8), provides yet another classic example of the threat of more urban sprawl in this country, and the prospect of vistas of shiny roofs, tiny backyards and traffic chaos.

Escaping this sort of suburban wasteland is the exact reason why many of us live in Romsey.

Naturally, anyone who values living on the perimeter of the town will be affected by boundary changes. But if it must be expanded, the development must occur somewhere.

The three options include consolidation of the existing town area, a new northern and western option on higher ground already occupied by rural living zone residents, and an eastern and southern zone bordered by Portingales Lane.

In every case, there will be winners (especially the speculators) and losers (those who value their rural lifestyle and have no wish to sell).

Boundary decisions should be made in the best interests of the whole community, and not on the basis of the strength of lobbying by those with financial or personal interests.

Consideration should be given to the environment, making best use of the rich soils in the area, ensuring a continued separation between existing towns, providing accompanying transport infrastructure, and ensuring that land subdivisions are not located in highly visual areas.

If hundreds of rural towns of France and Germany can do this while still maintaining their attractiveness to residents, tourists and small businesses alike, then surely it can be done here too.

My sincere apologies to Barry McDonald ('That's not right', Opinions, March 1) and Rob Mitchell ('Taken seriously', Opinions, March 8) for stating in my recent letter that Woodend was only shifted to the Bendigo electorate prior to the 2018 election ('How different would things be?', Opinions, February 22).

I wondered how I missed that Lisa Chesters had been our representative since 2013 given that I take an interest in politics, both state and federal, and read all the local newspapers regularly.

I concluded that it escaped my attention simply because she has rarely attended Woodend to interact with local people on an individual basis over the past nine years.

Mary-Anne Thomas, our state representative, is out and about for a photo op and pop up shopping centre appearance when there is an election coming up.

As for Mr Mitchell, he cites attending public functions and holding numerous meetings with members of this electorate and in particular Woodend, since the boundaries were re-drawn last July.

I don’t back away from stating that politicians are only good at appearing for photo opportunities, especially if they’re handing out community money grants close to an election. But that’s where it starts and finishes in my experience.

I have never received any such mail from incumbent politicians in the past 13 years saying they are available to meet constituents at a nominated time in Woodend. Nor have I seen adverts in the local papers.

I am also intrigued as to why Mr Mitchell is active now in Woodend when his own statement says boundary changes are not confirmed until an election is called. That begs the question, is Woodend sitting in

limbo? Is Lisa Chesters still our rep or is Rob Mitchell? I will be more vigilant in future. I’ll make sure I know my electoral boundaries and will certainly look out for town visit notifications from our state and federal representatives in my letterbox.

The inexcusable and unfathomable decision by relevant authorities to allow a full season only reinforces my understanding that the Victorian government must be subject to a very small but powerful group of people… ignoring the majority who want this unsustainable and cruel practice to stop.

Sporting clubs and physical activity based community groups across the Macedon Ranges are being given the opportunity to be active allies for diversity and inclusion and create clubs that are welcoming and safe for everyone.

Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health’s Country LGBTI Inclusion Program (CLIP) is teaming up with sport inclusion campaigners Proud2Play to help clubs encourage LGBTIQA+ people to get more active.

The training will provide organisations with the knowledge and skills to host ‘come and try’ sessions aimed at the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex community with the goal of removing barriers and creating a more welcoming inclusive environment that meets the needs of everyone.

“Many LGBTIQA+ people are hesitant about taking part in group exercise as they are afraid that they do not fit into the

traditional male and female sporting spaces,” says Belinda Brain from CLIP and leader of the Rainbow Active project.

“We want to ensure everyone has the opportunity to benefit from being active, both physically and mentally – we want to see rainbow geared activity for all.”

Proud2Play works with all levels of the sporting community to encourage increased LGBTIQA+ participation and visibility through education, policy review, research and inclusive events.

Rainbow Active: LGBTIQA+ inclusion and how to host an inclusive come and try session is on Saturday March 19, 2.30pm to 4pm at 1 Caroline Chisholm Drive Kyneton.

Milestone in storm cleanup

The green waste treatment site at Romsey has reached a milestone of processing 63,000 tonnes of trees and storm debris in its first six months of operation.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the dedicated treatment site was established to manage large volumes of highvalue wood, particularly mountain ash, from the June 2021 storm event.

“This is so much more than dealing with debris. This facility is processing trees that have meant to so much to the communities who have lived amongst them, and seeing those trees returned to their communities as product is a great outcome,” she said.

“It’s great to see that all the wood processed through the Bushfire Recovery Victoria clean-up program is being put to good use – not one bit of it is wasted."

A partnership between Bushfire Recovery Victoria and Macedon Ranges Shire Council, the facility has been an integral part of the Bushfire Recovery Victoria residential clean-up program, clearing, processing, and making best use of the trees.

The new treatment site has set a new

standard for sustainable processing of trees and in the past six months the facility has: • supplied 10 different men’s sheds across six shires with timber for their community projects • established a partnership with RuralAid to provide 50 kilometres of fencing and retaining wall sleepers for residents and primary producers across the worst stormaffected farms and communities • milled 11,500 stakes for council tree planting programs • created firewood for nearly 2000 residents in surrounding impacted local government areas • processed root balls to enhance fish habitat in rivers and water systems • delivered 225 cubic metre bags of sawdust to residents • processed 180,000 cubic metres of mulch, with free mulch available at transfer stations across surrounding local government areas.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council CEO Bernie O’Sullivan said partnering with

Bushfire Recovery Victoria allowed the council to scale the operation and process trees from other storm-affected parts of Victoria, leading to a better outcome for not just this community, but so many others.

“The Romsey facility has allowed us to not only clear and process trees and debris faster on an enormous scale, but up-cycle the timber into products that create a benefit for our residents, such as firewood, tree stakes, fence posts, and smoking chips," he said.

Bushfire Recovery Victoria is continuing to consult with environmental and community groups about their needs and best use of products.

The facility has been funded through the Victorian Government’s $105 million response to the June 2021 storm and flood event.

The Bushfire Recovery Victoria residential cleanup program covers the demolition and removal of any structures or hazardous trees threatening residents, work crews and structures, on eligible residential properties that were damaged beyond repair by the June event.

Porsche tractor sold

A rare vintage Porsche tractor has been sold by Kyneton auctioneer Martin Evans.

"Porsche made tractors in the period 1956 to 1963, then closed the tractor plant to concentrate on making automobiles," Mr Evans said.

"Very few Porsche-branded tractors were shipped to Australia except a two-cylinder, circa 1961, surfaced in the tiny Gippsland town of Ripplebrook."

The tractor returned to life on February 19 in an online clearance sale.

Mr Evans said furious bidding saw the vintage tractor sell for $15,450, plus tax.

"Bidders were predominantly collectors of vintage farm machinery; the attraction was that the Porsche tractor could be the only Porsche-branded tractor in Australia," he said.

Voucher program to get kids active

Community sports clubs are being encouraged to register as an activity provider to make it more affordable for families to get into community sport.

Registrations are open for sporting clubs and organisations to become a Get Active Kids Activity Provider ahead of round four of the Get Active Kids Voucher Program opening on March 21.

Previously, families finding it difficult to afford the costs associated with club fees, registration, equipment and uniforms would pay and then be reimbursed through the program.

This year clubs and sporting organisations can register as a provider, which allows families to sign their kids up by using the voucher up front and reducing out-ofpocket expenses.

Families will be able to apply for a voucher up to $200 through the Get Active Kids Voucher Program and will then be

required to submit the voucher to their local sporting club.

Clubs and sporting organisations will then be able to redeem the voucher from the government.

To be eligible for registration as an activity provider, clubs and sporting organisations must be affiliated with a recognised State Sporting Association or equivalent governing body.

The program is open to Victorian children aged up to 18, named on a valid Commonwealth Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card and named on a valid Medicare Card at the time of application.

A special consideration stream is also available to support children in care, temporary or provisional visa holders, undocumented migrants and international students up to 18 years at the time of application.

Call for supervisors

Macedon Ranges Council has positions vacant for school crossing supervisors.

CEO Bernie O’Sullivan said the council currently managed 20 school crossings across the shire and employed more than 30 crossing supervisors.

“With the school age population growing across the shire, council would like to hear from responsible, enthusiastic, independent and community minded people of all ages, interested in becoming school crossing supervisors," he said.

“If you are a positive and outgoing person, who can work flexible hours and short shifts, and would enjoy being the friendly face that people know and trust, I would encourage you to apply.

“Our supervisors are valued and dedicated community members and we appreciate their hard work and commitment to ensuring our children are safe. Several of our crossing supervisors have more than 20 years’ service and recently one celebrated 40 years’ service with us, with many of our crossing supervisors starting in casual relief roles before taking permanent assignments."

Council’s supervisors wear reflective fluorescent uniforms and generally work during peak periods from 8am to 9.30am and 3pm to 4pm, between the school crossing zone times.

Aspiring school crossing supervisors need to be punctual and comfortable in all traffic and weather conditions.

You must hold a current driver's licence and a Working with Children Check (or be able to obtain one) and will need to complete a pre-employment medical examination.

Hawks’ girls show enthusiasm Bill West Having two very proficient junior girls’ football teams at Woodend was just a dream four years ago, but it’s now reality with plenty of optimism about the coming 2022 season.

The Woodend Hawks Junior Football and Netball Club is still looking for more players to supplement the Under 15s and Under 19s sides, which train at the Buffalo complex (not Gilbert Gordon Oval) from 5pm each Monday and Wednesday.

“Many of these girls had not even picked up a football until there was an opportunity to play with other girls,” explained the club’s junior girls’ football coordinator June Gladman.

Dedicated head coach Anthony 'Woody' Woodcock is enthused at the task at hand.

“There’s a lot more flow-on opportunities for talented girls now in the community football world, with the AFLW becoming stronger, and the chance to eventually play at senior and inter-league level.

“COVID has made it difficult in the past couple of seasons locally, but we were competitive last year, and should improve further,” he predicted.

CALDER CANNONS The Hawks are thrilled two of their players in ruck exponent Molly Connell, 17, and midfielder Maisy Crowther are in the Calder Cannons development squad. a couple of other Hawks narrowly missed selection.

Maisy is a granddaughter legendary Woodend and Port Melbourne stalwart, the late Carl Bowen.

Katrina Bau won the league’s best and fairest for U14.5 last season, and Daisy Kenin was the league’s leading goalkicker.

Not all the girls who are registered with the Hawks come from Woodend.

Newcomers are very welcome, irrespective of their geographic locations.

Some of the girls with the Hawks have been involved in other sports, others are quickly making their mark and can’t wait to further develop their football skills.

“It’s onwards and upward for this daughter of Warhorse,” the pleased trainer and part-owner said.

Starting a $5 chance, the very lightly raced Irascible Miss ran up to her impressive jump-out form and should be improved by the run.

Alana Kelly also rode seven gallopers for Osborne in the Kilmore jump-outs on Friday.

This Thursday, March 17, Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club is looking forward to staging another meeting at Kyneton.

GOLF results Charity Day raises $5450 for Hepburn SES unit Twenty-eight teams entered this year's four-person Ambrose Charity event at Trentham Golf Club. Funds were raised through entry fees, raffles, a trading table and silent auctions for donated goods.

During the presentation, Brad Climie (SES controller) spoke of the work of the SES and the 1700 square kilometres the unit covered in Hepburn Shire.

The club thanks everyone who helped on the day with organisation, donated goods, raffles, auction donations and on the course. Professional golfer and member Stuart Leong charged $5 for tee shots on the long 6th and 18th holes.

Tony Olsson (18) was again in great touch with 38 points, winning B-grade by a shot from Peter Verlaan (13). on 37.

In A-grade, Daniel Klimneck (12) on 38 edged out Megan Carroll (10) on a countback.

Kyneton Congratulations to club captain Mat Hodgkiss who excelled in last week’s proam at Northern Golf Club. He earned a new golf bag for the lowest amateur score of the day.

Mount Macedon A third of the sizeable field achieved handicap or better on Saturday.

The day’s winner was A-grader David Watt with 40 stableford points, on a countback from Patrick Doyle. Nathan Fairley had 39 to top B-grade, and Steve Penney was best in C-grade with 38.

The midweek par event saw 19 players braving a southerly chill, with Henri Malkunas returning the best tally of +1.

Regional champions celebrate Tethering on the brink of defeat, David Beardmore, Terry Kelly, Graham Edwards and Ethan Higgins (s) staged a remarkable comeback to win eight ends in succession and wrap up the Ballarat Highlands Region men’s fours championship.

Representing Highlands, Gisborne’s Beardmore, Kelly and Higgins were pleased to welcome Kyneton Golf’s topliner Edwards into their ranks for the title bid.

The final extended for nearly three and a half hours under lights at Ballarat Bowling Club on Thursday night, with the Highlands quartet opposed by the strong Sebas-

topol lineup of Murray Gannon, John Garvin, Paul Lovell and Fred Reus (s).

After nine ends, Sebastopol appeared to be in control with a 10-2 advantage, but the Highlands quartet lifted and scored 16 shots to nil to lead 18-10, before conceding three on the final end for a 18-13 tally and a berth in the State Championships at the end of April.

MIXED PAIRS THRILLER The regional mixed pairs championship final played at Kyneton over 18 ends on Sunday was an absolute thriller, requiring an extra end to determine the outcome.

Gisborne’s Dot Evans and Ethan Higgins led early until Buninyong’s Yvonne Clark and Keith Chapman gained a ‘six’ on the fifth end; there was little between the two sides from then on. Under pressure, the Gisborne pair drew three shots on the final end to force a tie.

On the extra end, Higgins played an upshot to disturb the head, and the jack rolled in the vicinity of a Gisborne bowl; Chapman coolly drew shot with his final bowl and Higgins could not change the outcome with his last bowl.

Kyneton will host the region’s men’s singles, pairs and triples finals on Sunday, March 27.

Wide margins in semi-finals Bill West

Any chance of close finishes in the Highlands division one pennant bowls semi-finals on Saturday virtually disappeared in the first half of play.

On an immaculately prepared Kyneton green there were no excuses, and red hot flag favourite Kyneton Golf scored a convincing 29-shot all fours up victory over second placed Gisborne to go straight into the grand final.

Golf players also surely took out the award for the most vociferous reactions to an abundance of top shots!

Fourth placed Lancefield had lost to Romsey twice during the home and away season, but this counted for nought in the knockout first semi-final as the Tigers showed top form across early ends, racing to a 36-9 overall lead as their opposition battled for consistency.

After the break there was a stalemate for a pe-

riod, and it soon became obvious which sides were going to be worthy winners.

Golf’s formidable Graham Edwards’ four extended its winning streak with a 15-shot margin over Graham Quaife, but it was Toby Barker’s big performance in accounting for young star Ethan Higgins by eight shots which snuffed out any Gisborne aspirations. The overall margin was 29 shots.

Lancefield has exceeded expectations, and it was the quartet of Gary Choate, Keith Webb, Dave Safstron and Bev Holmes (s) who excelled in accounting for the usually consistent Cam Austin crew 28-9. Jeff Holmes was pleased with his side’s team effort to finished 11 shots ahead, while Damien Ely was Romsey’s lone winner – by six shots.

All three preliminary finals this Saturday will again be at Kyneton, with Gisborne versus Lancefield to decide Golf’s grand final opponent.

It was a good weekend for Golf, with it’s No. 2 side winning the division two second semi-final by seven shots over ladder leader Woodend.

The first semi-final saw Romsey eliminate Macedon with a seven-shot victory spearheaded by Andrew Laing’s rink.

The division three preliminary final is between Diggers Rest and Macedon.

With two rounds remaining, three teams are still in contention for top spot in division 3 of Northern District Croquet Association pennant. Undefeated teams Macedon Mt Towrong and Kyneton Black played an enthralling match last week, with the outcome going down to the doubles.

Elizabeth Payne won both her singles for Macedon, but Sue Chivers and Pat Fahy each scored a win, making the doubles the decider.

In a good contest the Kyneton pair prevailed 7-5 over Payne and

Olwyn Snape for an overall 3-2 victory.

Kyneton Yellow, also unbeaten, may have anticipated an easy match against winless Maldon Birch, but it all went down to the final hoop.

Maldon’s Gavan McCarthy won both his singles to tie the match 2-2, and with Cheryl Lang was poised for a major upset in the doubles before Yellow’s Sunny Chandra and Graham Smith took the final three hoops to snatch the doubles 7-6.

Macedon Mt Charlie match was postponed. Everything to play for in the final two weeks.

Division 2 leaders Quarry Hill Miners had their toughest match so far, as Kyneton Red pushed them all the way with the four singles split.

In the doubles Kyneton’s Ruth Gallpen and Darryl Chivers pushed for an upset before going down 7-5.

The remaining match saw Quarry Hill’s pair win all four singles, with Maldon Laburnum’s Theo Stockx and Chris Cooper won the doubles 7-5 to prevent a whitewash.

Highlands midweek pennant bowls semifinals were besieged by severe winds and rain last week.

Division 1: Undefeated Gisborne accounted for Romsey 67-50, and Kilmore eliminated Kyneton 53-51 in a thriller.

Division 2: Macedon 68 d Gisborne 37, Kilmore 65 d Broadford 49.

Division 3: Gisborne 40 d Diggers Rest 39, Macedon 52 d Kilmore 27.

Today’s division 1 and 2 preliminary finals are at Lancefield, with the division 3 match at Kyneton.

Barkers Creek claim fifth premiership

Crowds across the region were treated to some top cricket action as Castlemaine District Cricket Association (CDCA) grand finals were battled out across all grades last Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Highlights of the round were Hepburn A Reserve batsman Brayden Yanner's 83 not out and Harcourt C Grade bowler Fraser McAinch's 3-17. Results were: A Grade In the A Grade showdown Barkers Creek and Castlemaine United played a 'Best of Three' finals series with Barkers Creek winning the matches on Saturday and Sunday to claim their fifth consecutive premiership.

On day one at the Camp Reserve on Saturday Castlemaine United won the toss and elected to bat first. After a shaky start losing opener Aidan Goddard for 6 the side settled in and good innings from Darin Rush 20, Mark McKimmie 26 and Camblar Kays helped them to a final total of 101. The wickets were shared by Barkers Creek bowlers Lewis Stabler 2-17, Jonty Entwisle 2-20, Sean Smith 2-24, B Henderson 2-28.

Barkers Creek only dropped one wicket on their way to sealing the day one victory with Marcus Mckern 42, Sean Smith 42 not out leading the way. Nicholas Kearton claiming the wicket for United for 1-10.

On Sunday Barkers Creek won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers Marcus Mckern 32 and Sean Smith 38 again led the way with Lewis Stabler 54 not out also adding some late runs to help them to a solid total of 7-171. The pick of the bowlers for United were James Chaffey 3-33 and Nicholas Kearton 2-33.

Castlemaine United stumbled early in their chase for the 171 target losing their first three openers for single figures, Levi Chaffey 24 and Clinton Aldridge 48 helped steer them back on course but in the end the Castlemaine side fell 40 runs short giving Barkers Creek their fifth premiership win in a row.

A Reserve In the A Reserve final at Wesley Hill the Muckleford side won the toss and elected to bat first against Hepburn.

The side were in trouble early losing their first three batsman for single figures but good innings from Dakota Slingo 25 and Ryan White 41 not out helped Muckleford to 8-150. The wickets were shared around with Will Shiell, Nash Robinson and Vinet Kumar claiming two each.

Hepburn wasted no time racking up the runs before opener Bodhi Robinson (62) was caught by Dakota Slingo off a ball from Asher Butcher with the side at 143. However, fellow opener Brayden Yanner dug in and with the

B Grade Taradale welcomed Muckleford Gold to the Max Robinson Recreation Reserve on Saturday. Taradale won the toss and elected to bat first in front of their home crowd.

The side smashed out the runs with Steven Curnow 41, Andrew Young 19, Steve Learmonth 41, Matt Maerz 70 and Daniel Maerz 33 helping Taradale to a formidable 6-235. The pick of the bowlers for Muckleford Gold was Neville Cooper with 2-49.

Muckleford Gold started promisingly in reply with Neville Cooper 13, Fionn Kennedy 15 and David Leathem 26 getting early runs on the board. However the middle order struggled and despite Theo Mellick-

Cooper's 22 and Matt McEachran 11 and Harry Harvey 13 chipping in the side fell short of the target with 7-124(cc). The best of the bowlers for the successful Taradale side was Steve Learmonth 2-23.

Women's On Friday evening Newstead Women's side played host to Hepburn.

The Newstead side were thrilled to make the final in their inaugural season and the club and the town turned out in force for a great family evening to celebrate.

Hepburn won the toss and elected to bat first. Lucinda Lowe started brightly making 10 runs but unfortunately the rest of the side struggled to reach double figures and were dismissed for 80 despite their best efforts. Clare McNabb 3-6 and Tara McBean 2-7 did the damage for Newstead. Dawn McNabb 16 not out excelled with the bat along with Gen Butler 13 not out to help the

McIntyre Cup semi-finals Bill West The stage is set for Gisborne District Cricket Association’s McIntyre Cup semifinals featuring the top four sides – after two very one-sided qualifying finals and one close contest under the final six system last weekend.

All-rounder Josh McDonald starred for Gisborne at Gardiner Reserve, setting up a semi-final clash with ladder-leader Sunbury United, which lost by 10 runs to Bacchus Marsh.

Armed with quality batsmen, Gisborne travels to play United, which narrowly won the last time they met.

A clinical bowling performance by fourthplaced Romsey demolished Wallan, earning Ben Way’s Redbacks a crack at Bacchus Marsh in the other semi-final.

Gold won the toss and elected to bat first making 7-158. Top scorers were Jack Nuttall with a superb 50 not out. The pick of the bowlers for Harcourt was Fraser McAinch with 3-17.

The Harcourt side tried valiantly to chase down the target set by Gold with great performances from Jack Archer 28 and Mason Chamberlain 9. However, the Gold bowlers were in top form with Louis Parsons 2-10, Charlie Cordy 2-11, Max Matheson 2-12, Charlie Warren 2-15 sharing the wickets to dismiss Harcourt for 79 and claim the premiership win.

Malmsbury chases flag

Malmsbury defeated Macedon in the GDCA division two semi-final on Saturday by 42 runs, and face up to Rupertswood in this weekend’s grand final.

The Berries are looking forward to the chance to secure another flag for the club.

Macedon’s decision to bowl in the semi-final appeared to pay off with early wickets falling.

In a steady batting performance, Dave Nolte 26 and Justin Murphy 20 led the way with innings concluding at 9/155c.c. from 40 overs.

Xavier Felice 3-34, Finton Light 2-16 and Joe Barham 2-30 ere the best of the bowlers.

The Cats lost an early wicket, and a close finish looked likely before a brilliant run out and tight bowling turned the tide.

Barham 33 not out and Craig Pender 24 did well in a final tally of 113 from 31 overs.

Wickets were shared, with Iain Kosmac Matt Cox and Jake Sundblom securing two each, and Chris Knott and Bayden Ganim one.
