WELCOME TO DIALOGUES 2022 A curation of dynamic writers and theorists from a diverse range of fields will come together to collaboratively reflect on the issues of ‘CHANGE’.

Taking place from the 7th till the 10th of April at The Castlemaine Goods Shed and venues throughout Castlemaine, Dialogues 2022 aims to stimulate active discourse where speakers and audiences challenge, inform, reassure, and inspire each other.

Curated by the brilliant Kristin Gill from Northern Books, the program will include keynotes, panel discussions, in conversation events, literary lunches and poetic creative interventions, all designed to encourage engagement, where topical issues will be examined through dialogue and reflection.

Featuring progressive thinkers and writers from Australia and beyond, artists will discuss aspects of ‘CHANGE’ and the impact of it on our community, on us as individuals, on our economy and the environmental landscape.

Our speakers will challenge and engage with the audience, encouraging them to instigate, embrace, reject and consider the outcomes of change along the way.

Accolade for Woodend filmmaker

Veteran filmmaker Michael Dillon AM has been honoured for his lifetime’s work which includes more than 100 mountain and adventure film projects stretching over 50 years.

He has been awarded the Grand Prize of the International Alliance for Mountain Film – and it's the first time it has been presented to someone from the Southern Hemisphere.

Highlights of Dillon’s career include 25 years as Sir Edmund Hillary’s filmmaker, and his filming of three significant Everest expeditions, including a never since repeated sea level to summit climb that he conceived and filmed. That

film, Everest Sea to Summit, won eight grand prizes worldwide and is considered one of the greatest adventure films of all time.

Dillon, born in Sydney and now living in Woodend, began filmmaking at the age of 11 through an unconventional method.

"I used coloured pencils to create stories on long strips of paper that I wound frame by frame through a cinema I built from my meccano set," he told the Express.

In 1969, on one of the first ever commercial treks in the Everest region, a cameraman filming it became altitude sick and Michael took over. With a real camera in his hand for

the very first time in his life, he never looked back.

In 1972, Dillon made his first documentary in Nepal, the first of more than 20 filming projects he has done there since. This film, A Himalayan Journey, was sold widely to television, including to the BBC, and helped fast track global interest in Himalayan trekking.

Dillon filmed Sir Edmund Hillary’s Ocean to Sky Ganges Jetboat expedition in 1977, the start of a long association that involved six film projects with Hillary, in India, Fiji and Nepal, including the National Geographic Special Return to Everest.

Malmsbury artist Gabrielle Martin with her winning work in this year’s Maldon Portrait Prize. The focus of the I Be Humanthemed Maldon Portrait Prize now switches to the photography category with the winner to be announced this Saturday.

But the local artist says taking out this year's I Be Human-themed Maldon Portrait Prize is particularly sweet in a locale renowned for its artistic talent.

Her win with oil painting The Ecologist, depicting longtime family friend and ecologist Dr Cassia Read, comes as the annual prize staged by the Maldon Artist Network enjoys a growing reputation among the nation's significant portraiture awards.

For the first time this year it was opened up to artists nationwide and also to depicting portraiture subjects from anywhere in Australia.

But Martin says she opted to paint Dr Read – "because we have so many talented local people here".

"I am so happy. It's a real thrill," Martin said when the Express asked for her reaction to taking out the year's prize.

"I wanted to paint someone making a real contribution.

"Cassia is a big-picture person."

She particularly points to the contribution her portrait subject's work is making toward addressing some of humanity's most pressing environmental problems including climate change.

Martin, who teaches painting for Castlemaine Community House's popular Art Pathways course, mentions Dr Read's role in setting up the Castlemaine Institute together with others including Dr Read's partner, economist Warwick Smith.

"The Castlemaine Institute is really trying to think about ways to achieving a better future," says Martin whose 2004 Archibald finalist portrait of her former painting teacher, Tony Clark, is currently on exhibition as part of the Archie 100 show in the Geelong Art Gallery.

That show, featuring 100 former Archibald Prize finalists remains open to February 20, with Martin currently working toward staging a new exhibition of as part of Castlemaine Art Museum's Orbit program later this year.

While the exhibition of finalist works in the painting, drawing and mixed media

section of this year's Maldon Portrait Prize wrapped up on the weekend, the Maldon Portrait Prize now shifts focus to its new photography section, which also carries a $5000 prize.

"The winner of our new photography portrait prize will be announced of February 19," co-convenor of the Maldon Artists Network Jenny Merkus says.

The Photographic Exhibition begins next Sunday February 20 and runs until February 27.

Merkus says this year's move to partner with the town's new Edge Galleries is contributing to the prize's expanding reputation.

"It professionalises the show much more," she says.

"This year as well we've made it Australia-wide. It's got a higher profile and I think after four times people are getting to know it's on.

"It has a lot of draw power and helps to give Maldon a creative reputation."

An online exhibition including all entries has also been organised, running on March 1-June 15, and offering two People’s Choice Awards.

A learner driver and his supervising driver are both facing drug-driving charges after being intercepted on the Calder Freeway between Kyneton and Carlsruhe on Friday night.

The 19-year-old Meadow Heights man and the 22-year-old Kyneton man were drug tested and both returned positive results for illicit drugs.

Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol officers said supervising drivers were deemed to be in charge of the car they were in while supervising a learner driver and were therefore subject to the same road safety rules that applied to the driver.

Questions raised Eve Lamb

A Castlemaine resident has raised questions over waste disposal practices of Castlemaine Health, claiming the local hospital appears to be sending equipment and furniture to landfill despite many of the items still being in good condition.

"The hospital has filled a large waste disposal skip, which it has on part of its Castlemaine site, with all sorts items that appear to be eminently serviceable," said the concerned local resident who preferred not to be named.

"These are things like office chairs, adjustable beds, walkers, adjustable tables and electrical items, and many of these items as far as I could make out appear to be in excellent condition with plenty of life left in them.

"My question is why aren't these items going to secondhand shops or charity organisations so they can be recycled rather than simply discarded going to landfill as it appears they are destined for?"

"They could at least be going to another less well funded health service.

"Some of these items that have obviously been thrown out appear to have nothing wrong with them at all, and some of them are quite expensive items," the concerned

The Phee Broadway Theatre, located at Mechanics Lane Castlemaine, is a community gathering place, where creativity is fostered, people connect, and shared narratives are explored.

Storm and flood response update

We’d like to say a big thank you to residents for their patience while we work through more than 200 requests for assistance following the severe thunderstorm in the shire last month. Council crews are responding to the high-volume of requests, and undertaking repairs to drainage, pathways and roads as part of the clean-up.

"We recently disposed of some furniture and electrical equipment," Ms Race said.

"The electrical equipment had been tested as part of a Test and Tag process but deemed faulty.

"The furniture was assessed as being unsafe for use. All recyclable scrap metal was removed from the items before they were put in a skip for disposal.

"None of the items were suitable for reuse or resale for reasons of safety and infection control," Ms Race said.

"In the past 12 months Castlemaine Health has reduced its energy consumption by an average of 11 per cent and its greenhouse gas emissions by 13 per cent.

"These reductions were achieved by transitioning to a new solar power generating system and disposing of gas heaters."

Ms Race said Castlemaine Health had an active Environmental Sustainability Committee with broad representation from across the organisation, as well as the Mount Alexander Sustainability Group.

A true legend of the track

The Hanging Rock racing community lost a true legend last week with the passing of one-of-a-kind race caller Jack Styring.

The 92-year-old held the Guinness World Record for the longest career as a race caller and was beloved locally for his colourful calling of the Hanging Rock races, which he'd done some 38 times.

The former Gisborne resident was a life member of the Hanging Rock Racing Club and had a feature race named in his honour.

Long-time friend and former president of Hanging Rock Racing Club, Mike Rowland, said the recognition of Styring’s contribution to thoroughbred racing in Victoria had been widely acknowledged through the awarding of an Order of Australia Medal and in recent media over the past week.

"Extolling Jack in all of his roles over the many decades – race caller, broadcaster, commentator, journalist, administrator and all round raconteur – reflected the wide respect for, and appreciation of, his contribution," Rowland said.

"Jack was unique in the true sense of the word.

"He was a long-term resident of the Macedon Ranges and his passion and advocacy for racing in the Ranges was manifest in his decades-long involvement with the Hanging Rock Racing Club as race caller, committee member and office holder, including a time as president."

Styring was also a breeder and owner and as a race caller he injected his own colourful descriptive brand into broadcasts of countless races all over Victoria and interstate.

Styring called his first race as a 21-year-old at Kaniva in 1960, and his last at Yea when he was 81. Remarkable longevity.

Rowland said the local club committee room benefited from Styring’s willingly shared experience and encyclopedic knowledge of all things racing.

"He was, informally, an educator and mentor to many club office holders over so many years," Rowland said.

"How fortunate we were to have the benefit of that.

"His presence about the club in the days when working bees were integral to the work of committees, with local racing community support, was much appreciated.

"Invariably, in the breaks, participants were regaled with Jack’s stories of the racing world, often with good humour."

Rowland said that while Styring valued tradition, he retained a future's focus.

"Jack engaged actively in the considered discussions around the potential merger of the Hanging Rock and Kyneton District Racing Clubs.

"He saw clearly the future for a merged entity. And so it was to be.

"He took great pride in being the founding patron of the newly formed (2009) Kyneton and Hanging Rock Racing Club.

"Jack also took pride in the growth and development of the new club to being an industry high performer, as it now is.

"He treasured the natural environment of both racing precincts – the majesty of the avenues of elms at Kyneton, and the awe of Hanging Rock. "He often referred to Hanging Rock as iconic. Of course, it is.

And so was he."

Imaginarium Lost and discarded given new life

Kitty Calvert's Imaginarium is an escape from the mundane and an invitation to reflect on the concept of waste in our world.

Kitty's unique sculptures come from a love of vintage and desire to re-use and recycle unique pieces of discarded treasure.

They evoke cherished memories of childhood and have a sense of quirkiness.

These discarded treasures may be things from our past... maybe things we let go of years ago or things that were lost or misplaced as our lives evolved and we grew.

A biscuit tin from our mother's kitchen, a colourful funnel and ice cream scoop or a metal sieve, something that meant dessert was on its way, or that there was something delicious in the oven. Where did all those things go?

Why are they now considered rubbish to be consigned to the tip, the garage or at

best the op shop? Such things of beauty, often so carefully and artfully constructed at a time when things were made to last.

Often when we discover one treasure, we have no idea how it will combine with others to create its new persona. It comes together in an almost magical process as one piece 'speaks' to another and another until we see the unfolding possibility of the sculpture.

Ultimately there is such joy in the process of creating each sculpture, giving the discarded and lost a new lease of life, a new personality and a brand new spirit.

Kitty Calvert sculptures are a collaboration of treasure hunt and treasure build, between Melbourne-based husband and wife Phill Calvert and Julia Brampton.

Imaginarium by Kitty Calvert is on display until February 28 at The Old Auction House, 52-56 Mollison Street, Kyneton.

Woodend project progresses

A redeveloped Woodend Community Centre is a step closer with funding announced by both the state government and Macedon Ranges Shire Council to fast track detailed design works.

The state government recently announced $260,000 towards the project, and Macedon Ranges Shire Council will be contributing a further $65,000 to the project.

“The master plan for the redevelopment completed last year outlines amazing potential,” the mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said.

“The reimagined civic space will replace the existing building and proposes a new library, multipurpose indoor performance space, community and visitor information hub, multipurpose foyer and gallery space, cafe and produce kiosk, and a village green/ outdoor events space.”

The Woodend Community Centre project is one of the council’s key priorities announced in the recently released Macedon Ranges Priority Projects 2022 prospectus.

“The prospectus supports our ongoing advocacy discussions with key decision makers and has been developed to reflect the needs of our community and complement existing government strategies and policies. It highlights our willingness and ability to continue to seek out and foster, new and exciting partnerships with all levels of government," she said.

“In shaping our shire’s future, we look forward to collaborating with local residents and businesses and our external partners - to not only meet immediate needs but realise the community’s vision, where the wellbeing of residents, a strong local economy and a protected, and enhanced, natural environment are high priorities."

A three-year private land conservation program has been named a priority project for Macedon Ranges but awaits funding to get it kick-started.

Highlighted in Macedon Ranges Council's Priority Projects 2022 prospectus, the council requires $270,000 across three years to make it a reality.

The program is 'ready to go' and aims to build the capacity of farmers and rural landowners to implement sustainable land management practices.

Possibility of an indoor pool is in sight for Romsey as an Aquatic Facility Feasibility Study has been prioritised for Macedon Ranges' east.

The $100,000 study is listed on Macedon Ranges Shire Council's Priority Projects 2022 prospectus, released last week.

MRSC’s Sport and Active Recreation Strategy initially identified the need for a future indoor aquatic facility in the east.

Currently, residents must travel to Gisborne or Kyneton to access indoor facilities. In 2013, the requested facility was identified as hosting a projected 113,000 visits per annum, according to the prospectus.

Mount Alexander Shire Council has been working through more than 200 requests for assistance following a severe thunderstorm in the shire last month.

The storm on Friday January 28 resulted in flooding and damage that impacted a large number of properties across the shire.

Council crews are responding to the high-volume of requests, and undertaking repairs to drainage, pathways and roads as part of the continued clean up.

Mayor Bill Maltby thanked local emergency service teams and council officers for their swift response during the storms, and in their aftermath, and acknowledged that the severe weather event impacted many members of the community.

“We know this is a very stressful time and our thoughts are with everyone who’s been impacted," Cr Maltby said.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone, emergency services and local residents, for their tireless work in keeping the community safe during the recent storm.

“Our teams are out in our community working through requests for help – clearing drains and pits, and working as fast as possible to clean up,” he said.

“We encourage you to report any damage as a result of the storm, but please ask for your patience and understanding while we prioritise the work within our current resources.”

Along with council, responders included Victorian State Emergency Service, Country Fire Authority, Victorian

Police and Forest Fire Management Victoria.

Cr Maltby said the weather event had illustrated that it was important people had their emergency plan ready.

"We are still in the summer season and potential for fire, flood and storms remain a risk during this time of year,” he said.

“Make sure you have a list of emergency numbers and an emergency kit ready.”

Supermarket back on the agenda Castlemaine's third supermarket will again be a topic of discussion at Mount Alexander Shire Council's first meeting of 2022 tonight.

Council will consider its position heading into the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing next month, in light of new plans for the proposed supermarket submitted to VCAT by Lascorp Investment Group in early December.

The proposal to build the large Woolworths supermarket (3300m2) and two accompanying retail shops is currently before VCAT after the developer lodged a review with VCAT in May 2021 after council failed to determine the application within the prescribed time.

Council knocked back approval for the controversial proposal at its July 2021 meeting. Council had received 178 objections to the permit.

Permission for a smaller supermarket (1500m2) was previously granted on the site in April 2018.

According to the agenda for Tuesday night's meeting, council officers will recommend that the newly elected council support the latest plans.

The recommendation is a backflip on the advice of the previous council officer, and would overturn the previous council's decision.

However, council could uphold the original decision not to support the proposal. As the final decision would be made by VCAT, it would fall upon council’s representation to defend that position and the permit applicant to justify the issuing of a permit.

Lobby group Size Matters spokesperson Kaye Swanton said the group would be extremely disappointed if the current council was to support the council officer's latest recommendation.

The group also questioned how the developer could assume use of council land (road reserves) for car parking at the southern end of Urquhart Street and at the east of the site along the boundary with the neighbouring Duke Street property, currently the subject of a planning application for a childcare centre, for use as a loading dock area.

"If council does support the recommendation this is just one of the many issues that will need to be resolved at VCAT," Ms Swanton said.

However, there was also overwhelming support for another supermarket expressed when news of the agenda item was shared on our social media channels on Friday.

Although some would prefer to see it on another site.

Lascorp Investment Group national development manager Rob Harris said the new plans had incorporated council's requirements, including a signalised intersection.

Mr Harris said the mezzanine level had been moved to the rear of the building to minimise impact and the parapet had been lowered as requested by council.

"Council officers will be recommending support of the plans on Tuesday night but ultimately the decision is up to the councillors," he said.

Mr Harris said that while the Woolworths logos did not appear on the latest plans it was to be a Woolworths supermarket.

"We have a signed contract. If approved it will be a Woolworths," he said.

Macedon Ranges Youth Services are now recruiting young people aged 12 to 25 years to join the Music in the Sticks program.

The program has been running for more than 15 years providing valuable skills and experience to youths. It's regarded as a good entry point into the exciting world of event management, performance, and live and recorded music.

“Music in the Sticks can be a great pathway into the music industry, and many of our past participants have used their experience in the program to find employment in the sector,” said youth events officer, Chris Fox. The program is free to join and offers invaluable and hands-on experience in areas such as: event management, sound and lighting, photography and film, publicity and management, live and studio recording, sound production and hospitality.

The group is responsible for facilitating live music and cultural events around the Macedon Ranges. Meetings are held once a fortnight and food is provided.

"I am definitely the go-to person this year," Eli said. "So, if you didn’t know until now that we existed, or have been sitting back a bit, now is the time to come forward and check us out!"

Lifeguard shortage impacts pools A shortage of lifeguards due to COVID has forced some changes to the operating hours for public outdoor pools in Castlemaine, Harcourt, Maldon and Newstead.

Mount Alexander Shire Council late last week confirmed that the operating hours for its public outdoor swimming pools in each of these centres will be adjusted for the remaining four weeks of the pool season.

Changes to hours of operation became effective as of yesterday, February 14, and will remain in place until the end of the pool season on Sunday March 13.

Details of the revised pool opening hours are: • Weekends – all outdoor pools in Castlemaine, Harcourt, Maldon and Newstead to open as per normal operating hours.

• Weekdays – each outdoor pool will be open at least

two weekdays, allowing for programming such as Aqua Aerobics and lap swimming to take place.

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s acting manager of parks, recreation and community facilities, Karen Evennett, said the decision to adjust pool opening hours was unfortunate but necessary, given the current lifeguard staffing challenges experienced by the council's contract partner YMCA Victoria.

“Our outdoor swimming pools are much loved and well used by our communities, and we’ve been working in partnership with YMCA Victoria to ensure pool opening hours remain unchanged this year,” Ms Evennett said.

“Unfortunately there’s a lack of available trained lifeguards in the region, which is also reflected in the wider aquatic and recreation industry at the moment.

“Staff levels have been reduced due to COVID-19, and now as schools and universities return, many of our existing staff are unavailable to work.

“Water safety is always our highest priority, and we understand the expectation from our community for pools to be open as normal.

“The reality is that there isn’t enough staff to operate seven days a week across all townships, and to do so safely."

The council is encouraging community members with the relevant lifeguard qualifications who are interested in supporting the shire’s outdoor swimming pools to stay open to contact council’s contract partner YMCA Victoria.

The adjusted timetable for outdoor pool opening hours can be found on the mountalexanderpools.com.au website.

A Lancefield Kindergarten and Maternal and Child Health Centre has been named a priority project for Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

Last year the council revealed through service-modelling forecasting that some areas of early years services are likely to be strained in the future, particularly in Lancefield.

The proposed $1.9 million project includes a two-room kindergarten and MCH service – potentially on the Lancefield Primary School site – to accommodate the increase in demand for both services in the Lancefield/ Romsey area.

A dedicated Lancefield MCH is expected to relieve some pressure on the Romsey MCH, which currently services both towns.

"Recent growth in the Romsey township, with its new housing developments and families moving into the area, has put increasing pressure on the Romsey MCH centre to accommodate appointments," the council's Priority Projects 2022 prospectus reveals.

"The increase in demand has generated a higher workload for the service, resulting in an additional MCH nurse working offsite at the Romsey Hub." The council says the project is ready to apply for grant funding through the state government.

The council's Priority Projects 2022 prospectus suggests the service would ideally open for the 2024 school year or earlier.

The Victorian Suffolk Ewe Auction, dubbed ‘Australia’s Largest Suffolk Ewe Auction’ was held at the Kyneton Saleyards on February 5 with a yarding of almost 300 commercial and specially selected suffolk ewes.

The auction was a huge success with buyers and vendors coming from as far as WA and SA to buy and sell suffolks.

Buyers ranged from established stud breeders looking to inject quality genetics into their breeding lines, through to new to breeders looking to start their own flock of Suffolk sheep.

Auctioneers Dean Coxon and John Robson from Elders and Landmark Kyneton did an exceptional job coordinating bids from onsite bidders and the AuctionsPlus online portal to achieve a clearance rate of 96 per cent.

Suffolk ewes sold from $270 per head for commercial yardings through to the top price of $1950 for a specially selected ewe from the Hopea Suffolk Stud. Moondara Suffolk Stud sold 10 ewe lambs for an average price of $1214 per head and WA-based Kirrie Suffolk Stud sold a pair of artificially-inseminated ewes for $1750 and $1200 each.

Macedon Ranges Council is up-cycling trees felled by the June 2021 storm, milling them into stakes to boost council planting programs.

The council uses stakes in botanic gardens, parks, reserves, and street tree planting programs to help newly planted trees grow by giving them support and protection, leading to a greater chance of survival into maturity.

Shane Walden, council's director of assets and operations, said stakes were a vital element for any tree planting program.

Usually, each stake costs about $4.10; therefore for every 1000 stakes milled from the storm’s green waste, there is a savings of $4100 for the council.

“This saving means the council can redirect funds into other areas of recovery and restoration. As well as helping us rebuild the natural environment, by creating stakes from storm waste, there is a financial benefit for the community,” he said.

Council’s flagship facility in Romsey, run in partnership with Bushfire Recovery Victoria, continues to process green waste from storms and turn it into usable products.

“The Romsey facility has allowed us to not only process storm waste faster, and on an enormous scale, it also enables the up-cycling of waste into products that create a benefit for our community,” Mr Walden said.

As well stakes for its tree-planting program, Macedon Ranges Shire Council has delivered stakes to the City of Greater Bendigo and Mitchell Shire Council.

Hans Paas, Castlemaine As with the road toll itself, the efforts of Victorian authorities to tackle road safety appear to be going from bad to worse.

The move to install 'Test cameras for Calder' (Midland Express, February 8) will, when ultimately fully operational, enhance the revenue-raising capacity of Victoria Police without improving road safety.

Apparently the Calder Freeway's original construction specifications were for a road on which a maximum safe speed of 130km/h was mandated. The donkey tracks of humps and bumps that we actually got, while uncomfortable, can be safely handled by 21st Century motor transport. So moves to average speeds will catch safe and dangerous drivers alike.

Something that really would make a significant difference to road safety would be if the dysfunctional road works traffic management system by which hoax signs are left out despite no actual works being done was overhauled with a view to rebuilding public confidence.

The 60km/h speed limits left in place for weeks near the Woodend/Romsey turnoff has probably been the worst but not only example of the undermining of the road safety message by road authorities.

The road toll will only go down if there is a genuine partnership between road users and road authorities and these cameras and the shocking neglect inherent in the roadworks traffic management system will continue to stand in the way of that.

Devastating environmentally Chris Hooper, Castlemaine I'm so glad Trevor Scott and John Lewis wrote to this paper in the past few weeks to try to inform people of the potentially catastrophic gold exploration and mining in Victoria.

Apparently Premier Daniel Andrews announced that gold mining income would help Victoria recover from expenditure for the pandemic. So no care for the natural environment, our amenity and homes.

The government seems to give with one hand and take with the other. They're doing

some good environmental things but then encouraging gold mining, which would be devastating environmentally and for where we live our daily lives.

Mining releases carbon, it uses enormous amounts of water and it destroys the environment with holes, tunnels, piles of dirt and tailings dams containing arsenic and cyanide.

Look at the slag heaps on the Fryerstown road. Some companies have spoken reassuringly that they will go underground, no mention of the rest and that they may need to acquire your home.

As John Lewis says, look at the Fosterville mine, close to Bendigo, as an example of what happens when gold is found.

Central Victoria has already gone through the devastation of gold mining, turning the place literally upside down with arsenic residues.

About seven per cent of gold is used in technology, a small amount for jewellery and the rest is mostly made into ingots and locked away. So we dig up the land for that!

On a brighter note, Castlemaine Residents Against Biomass and 38 other registered Australian environmental organisations, including the Bob Brown Foundation, have joined forces with almost 200 organisations world-wide by signing the Biomass Delusion Statement.

There are so many better ways to preserve our atmosphere than burning valuable recourses.

Re. Mick Lewin's letter ('Meet with us', Opinions, February 8) We have met and it was disappointing, as Mount Alexander Bioenergy was very light on specifics.

Far from propagating spurious misinformation, I and like-minded others use MAB’s figures from their website to highlight the not immediately obvious side of their biomass plant to those interested.

We also submit supporting documentation, in keeping with the editorial policy of the newspaper.

While MASG have been planning their waste-to-energy project (for approximately seven years), regenerative agriculture practices have become widely known, in which carbon is stored in the ground by keeping topsoil continually covered with crops or vegetation. When MAB say they want to use crop stubble as feedstock for their biomass combustion chamber, they are directly supporting mass carbon dioxide emissions by doing so.

If MAB accounted for this in their carbon emission figures, they would choose not to use it. MAB have pledged not to use

As occurred in 2014 when the community raised their voices in strong opposition to commercial development in East Paddock, the fate of Hanging Rock remains critically in the balance from the state government’s Hanging Rock Master Plan.

Amidst the veil of Omicron, the Labor State Government, via DELWP, is attempting to rush through a 'consultation' process – predictably asking questions designed to mask the real issue at stake.

Whilst there are some welcome aspects to the Master Plan – essentially this is window dressing to hide government’s plan to build a big concrete monstrosity in East Paddock, where it will be clearly in view when standing on the Rock. This is exactly what the community fought to stop.

East Paddock was purchased in 1993 by the Shire of Newham and Woodend as a gift to future generations to protect the Rock from encroaching development.

Many will remember that in 2014 the Napthine State Government and Planning Minister Matthew Guy signed a contract with Macedon Ranges Shire Council to secure the rezoning of East Paddock to prevent future commercial development.

Concerningly the money has been spent but the promised rezoning never occurred in contravention of the terms of that contract.

Including East Paddock within Hanging Rock Reserve may not of itself be harmful, but MRSC should be clear that they have no mandate to sell East Paddock.

Doing so now will void the purpose of its original purchase.

Locals need to act quickly and oppose the Master Plan before February 28 to ensure that iconic Hanging Rock does not become the latest victim of Daniel Andrews’ out-of-control Big Build.

There are no shortage of places where this state government can spend money they don’t have – but there is only one Hanging Rock.

Say “No” now or be forever silent.

Strengthening connections for those 55 years and older

Verdicus, which translates to green circles, is the name and master plan for this stunning paradise located in Tylden.

The first time I visited this garden I was lost for words, which if you know me at all, is rather extraordinary!

Bruce and Keith own this pocket of Tylden and have worked former degraded farmland, heavily populated with gorse and blackberries on a weekend basis from 2003 and are still working today to Bruce’s masterplan.

With Bruce as the designer and his partner Keith also an avid gardener it was sleeves rolled up and spades at the ready, they commenced on their many weekend projects of transforming the 3.6ha property. Starting the garden, the main infrastructure of dams, terraces driveways and a cottage were established. The main house was actually built in 2017. This wonderful example of planning and sticking to the masterplan for a garden of avenues, terraces, dams and various gardens, has created a place well worth a visit.

The Blue Garden is an example of what you can achieve by mass seasonal planting of similar hues. As you wander along the paths and avenues you will pass through the Tapestry Garden, the Native Corner and one of my favourites, the Maple Walk.

Entering the gardens, past two large dams, there are curving paths leading in a carefully designed manner to ensure there is always a parkland feel and views of the Macedon Ranges.

Sounds very easy and romantic? Well when you ask Bruce and Keith, they will tell you that the wet, cold, frost-laden winters, long hot dry summers and heavy (if fertile) soils have resulted in both success and failure. One would think this is a costly exercise, however through trial and error, doing their own propagating, Bruce has stuck to tried and true plants such as iris, cornflowers, silver birch, daffodils, hellebores and box hedge, just to name a few. There is a practical side as well to Verdicus, not only lawns, marquee and a games lawn, but chooks and a vegetable garden area. Verdicus is open for viewing in November this year as part of the Woodend Rotary Design Festival.

Late summer gardening When the gardening season draws to a close in the final weeks of summer it seems all the hard work since spring has been worthwhile and that's it until next time.

Close the gate on the veggie garden to keep Peter Rabbit out until winter is over ... but wait, all has not ground to a halt, there is still plenty to do. Although spring is months away, you need to prepare for the season to come.

Care of your garden beds before winter kicks in will promote better soil health for next season, help minimise weeds and ward off disease.

Weeding is a must although you are probably fed up with it now. Autumn weeds can harbour disease and some set seed to allow themselves to hang around in your garden for years. So out they go!

Chuck out the dead and dying plants that are not just looking grotty, they can hide pests and pathogens. Healthy oldies can be put on your compost heap, but those with mould or other suspicious-

looking attachments should be otherwise disposed of.

Add goodies like a layer of compost or organic matter to your garden beds, which will help produce a nutrient-rich environment come spring. Just a top dressing should do.

Snip, snip and trim those faded lavender flowers back and give the bushes a little shaping if you (or they) feel the need. Likewise, other plants like agapanthus need to be dead headed.

Roses might need a prune as well at this time of the year. Some woody bits might have appeared on rose bushes. Prune them off and chuck them out where, if they are diseased, they won't spread their nasty bit to other plants.

Herbs Have a look around your herb garden. Don't let frost knock off anything you have been saving. In this part of the world frosts come unannounced and often early. Many herbs can be picked and dried and used over winter until the plants or new plantings spring to life again. Likewise, tomato seeds can be saved and put in raising mix to give you a homegrown crop next season.

And more There are plenty of other jobs to do late summer as well, but a long list would put you off doing anything at all, wouldn't it?

Just start with small steps and in no time it will all be done, well, looking better and more cared for at any rate ...

Fungal nails not uncommon of getting a fungal toenail infection because they often damage their toenails.

In addition, wearing running shoes means that the feet are often exposed to warm, moist conditions, which are ideal for the development of a fungal infection.

Fingernail infections are also more of a problem for people who frequently have wet hands, such as cooks and professional cleaners.

However, some people may be more prone to the risk factors of fungal nail problems if you * Have diabetes * Have problems with your circulation * Have a problem with your immune system * Wear footwear that is closed-in, has poor ventilation and doesn’t absorb sweat * Work in a humid or moist environment and * Have constantly moist skin, often due to excessive sweating.

Fungal nail problems are not uncommon and while they can be unsightly and uncomfortable, usually they are treatable.

Commonly, these problems are caused by a fungus spreading in, on or under the nail into the nailbed. The fungus may infect a broken or injured nail, or it may spread from a nearby skin condition, and with toenails this can include such things as athlete’s foot.

In addition, toenail fungal infections can be picked up by walking barefoot in public changing rooms, pools and showers. The fungus thrives in warm and moist conditions so basically anywhere where we walk barefoot is an ideal environment for the fungus to spread from person to person.

Sunnies – more harm than good?

While slapping on sunscreen, a hat and sunnies is promoted as being smart, some sunglasses can actually be doing your eyes more harm than good.

"People need to be aware that not all sunglasses are good sunglasses and, in fact, sometimes wearing sunglasses can actually be worse than not protecting your eyes from the sun at all. It is imperative that consumers choose their sunglasses based upon their level of protection, rather than fashion or false information," says ophthalmologist Dr David Robinson.

Many people confuse polarised lenses, which reduce glare, and glasses that offer UV protection.

"Sunglasses that do not filter out UV light actually result in an elevated melanoma risk to the back of the eyes," Dr Robinson says.

"Some dark sunglasses, in particular, filter out the visible light meaning that our pupil size increases thus allowing more UV light

into the back of the eye, which can increase people’s risk of melanoma at the back of the eye."

While not advocating that we ditch our sunnies completely, Dr Robinson advises that we need to be prudent in our selection.

"We need to buy sunglasses that 100 per cent satisfy the Australian standards," he

says.

Since July 1, 2019, all sunglasses sold in Australia must be tested and labelled according to the Australian/New Zealand Standard for Sunglasses and Fashion Spectacles. This standard specifies the limits for the allowable light and ultraviolet radiation.

Unfortunately, through online shopping in particular, many consumers are now purchasing and wearing sunglasses well below these standards.

Apart from reducing the risk of melanoma to the back of the eyes, effective sunglasses also reduce the risk of many other eye health conditions such as cataracts and ptergium, which is a fleshy overgrowth of the conjunctiva or membrane on the surface of the eye.

Dr Robinson also recommends people look for sunglasses with as large a lens as possible in order to prevent as much UVR from entering the sides of the glasses as they can. This helps protect against basal cell carcinomas. More than 50 per cent of BCCs of the eyelid initially occur on the lower lid of the eye, a place most people are unlikely to protect with sunscreen lotion. Large sunglasses that overlap the lower lid help prevent this condition.

Farewell to a beloved local legend Vale Robert Arnold Jenkins February 4, 1942 – January 29, 2022 The Kyneton community is mourning the loss of beloved local legend Arnold Jenkins who died on January 29.

Arnold was a born entertainer who was known for wanting everyone to be happy.

He was the longest-serving member of the Kyneton Horticultural Society and gave much of his time to make flower shows a success over many years.

Arnold worked in aged care locally for decades, bringing joy to residents at Bupa, RM Begg and the former Thomas Hogan wing at the Kyneton Hospital.

As a 'lifestyle coordinator', he organised entertainment and activities that put a spring in people's step.

Arnold's friends described him as a champion of people and causes, full of care and compassion for people.

One of his friends, Jim Noy, said that for three quarters of a century Arnold had given joy to "all of Kyneton".

"His kindness and contributions to individuals and the community in that time far exceeds what many have done in a full century," Jim said.

"He had a way with all people but especially elderly ones."

Arnold's 'way with people' was formed when he was just a young boy.

He was sweet but somewhat wayward, and was always off adventuring.

Arnold would befriend the swaggies at the swamp and the Italian prisoners of war working as farm hands under his father at HB Smith's property.

Police are investigating after a driver failed to stop for officers in Diggers Rest last Thursday and their vehicle was later located in Mount Macedon.

Police first observed a dark-coloured Holden travelling at speed on Diggers RestCoimadai Road about 9.50pm.

Officers attempted to intercept the car but the driver failed to stop and continued on. The vehicle was later located in Mount Macedon.

The driver remains outstanding and the investigation is ongoing.

Any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

the Redesdale Revellers, the Rotary Choir and the Kyneton Theatre Company's 'Funsters', more often than not teaming up with his comedic partner, the late Lyn Brown, another well-known local identity.

In 1970 the theatre company put on a review and toured under the name of The Funsters, raising money for Kyneton's One-Act Play Festival.

The show was a hit and they were in high demand.

The Revellers were formed as a fundraiser for the Redesdale Hall.

Arnold was a school bus driver for many years and was loved by the school children on his rounds. He was also a scout leader for quite some time.

He loved to participate in the annual Anzac Day service and present the Daffodil Festival parade entrants to the crowds, as they marched along Mollison street, on the mic.

Arnold was very proud to be selected as the ‘king’ of the Daffodil Festival twice and Kyneton Citizen of the Year in 1984.

He was always generous with his time in countless community organisations and worked tirelessly for the Kyneton Football Club, working in the kitchen at many functions.

Arnold will be remembered for always turning a negative into a positive, and for his utterly infectious laugh.

This wonderful and generous man was truly cherished, not only by his family, but by so many of the Kyneton community.

He will be greatly missed.

Player of the Year

Yea’s Adrianne Anglin (pictured) has won Dalhousie District Golf Association’s Women’s Player of the Year for 2021.

Established in 1994, the Player of the Year encourages DDGA players to attend events throughout the year.

Points are awarded for the best net scores at each tournament or bowl over 12 months.

Bendigo Bank sponsors both the men’s and women’s player of the year but a men’s award could not be made due to insufficient events being played in 2021 with COVID-19 restrictions.

Dalhousie District covers a wide area extending from Marysville and Euroa through to Romsey and Trentham.

Charity Golf Day

Mount Macedon Golf’s Club’s recent second ‘Doing It For Jarrod’ Day was an outstanding success, with a capacity field of 72 players and much valued sponsorship – both regular and ‘one-off’.

The club is looking forward to running the event again for this special and deserving cause.

“I know the people at Challenge and Briony Lyle (Jarrod’s wife) will be thrilled with the support the club has contributed to supporting the kids and their families,” club secretary Marcus Ward said.

The revenue generated for the ‘Doing It For Jarrod’ charity totally $6038.10 – well above expectations.

The committee and club members who volunteered on the day and in the leadup were warmly praised by

many.

The smooth flow-on of both morning and afternoon rounds was welcomed by all.

In the afternoon a suddendeath play-off at the par 3 10th hoe took place to determine the winners in a fitting end to a great day at the club.

Cubs take tee-off challenge

An adventurous week for 1st Kyneton Cubs and Scouts, as they experienced the best Kyneton Golf Club had to offer, kicking off their return to scouting for 2022.

In perfect weather, Jenny and her team at Kyneton Golf Club welcomed members to an afternoon of fun golfing activities, showcasing the serenity of the Blackhill Road site, hosting a 'Try Golfing' night among the sights and sounds of kookaburras and kangaroos.

It is an activity traditionally outside of the usual scouting program, but that’s exactly the point, according to the group’s assistant cub leader Sam Hodson.

“We love our usual activities, but we think it’s important to get into our local community and explore what’s on our doorstep because we’re lucky here to have so many great choices," Sam said.

"The golf club is a really beautiful part of Kyneton. It’s a unique golf course and the members have been so welcoming and generous.

"The cubs have enjoyed learning how to chip and putt with the fun games they’ve been playing here, so we see the value in presenting as many experiences as we can.

"If along the way, we introduce them to an activity that becomes a life-long interest, then we consider it a mission accomplished.

"At the very least, they get to have fun with their mates, try something new, and get to meet more incredible members of Kyneton’s community."

Kyneton The best round of golf over the past week at Kyneton was Jing Biscocho’s 8623-63 on Saturday.

Biscocho took out B-grade by three shots from Damian Summers 84-18-66, with Jason McClure 80-9-66 and Harrison Huntley 84-11-73 to top two in A-grade.

Ladies: Robyn MacRae (again) shone with a great 44 points, from Teaote Davies (27) with 37, on a countback from Julie Ha Wednesday stableford: MacRae (21) 41, from Harris (24) on 39.

The men’s comp was closely fought, with Ross Martin (12) a winner on a countback from Tony Dibella and David Austin.

Tuesday’s winner was Michelle Werner (29) with 40 points, from Bron Dwyer (26) and Julie Harris (on 36.

The second round of the James Rennick Memorial Trophy sees Tim Kirk leading with 134, from president Jonathan Beachey 137, Col O’Sullivan 138 and Richard Partridge 139. Good luck for the third round. When a seeded draw will be made at 9.40am for the top 12 players.

Lancefield Gary Dudderidge (7 handicap) took out Saturday’s stableford with 40 points, from runner-up Steve Gilbert (23) whose score of 39 floored everyone.

Dudderidge, Wayne Mee, Todd Lambert, Dale Schmitt, Mark Cruise, David Mannix and Gavin Winwood all advanced to the next round of the match play knockout singles.

Trentham Robin Wilson is the new Trentham Golf Club Champion, with an equal course record of 68 in the final round on Saturday.

Wilson, who plays from a handicap of 3, had a 72-hole tally of 291 to finished seven strokes clear of Leif Louwen-Skovdam.

In B-grade, John Smithwick came home with a wet sail to overhaul Chris Campbell who led by three after 54 holes.

Smithwick finished on 329, with Campbell and Jock MacLeod on 332.

Neale Hull tallied 360 to take out Cgrade by one shot from Mike De Jong.

Woodend After the many challenges and disruptions over the past two years due to the pandemic it was wonderful to see so many members and visitors in action at the 42nd Maurie Armstrong Memorial event on Saturday.

Winners of the prestigious 18-hole 4BBB par event were Chris Holliday and Laurie Deakin with +10 on a countback.

The best 27 holes back nine went to G. Wright and J. Nolan with +15, and N. Kent and G. Richardson took out the best 27hole front nine with +10.

Hawks Big Day Out

Woodend-Heskett Football Netball Club is bringing a Big Day Out of family fun to Buffalo Stadium on March 6.

Kick back and enjoy live music from Jess Mangan and Yeah Nah with a bite to eat and family fun.

"It’s been a tough couple of years and this day out presents a great opportunity for the community to get together," a club representative said.

There will be wine available from Midhill Vineyard, Hunter Gatherer Winery, Zig Zag Winery, gin from Animus Distillery, and beer from Rock and Ranges as well as WHFNC's own beer bar. Food trucks will offer woodfired pizza and Mexican street food. People are encouraged to bring along a picnic rug or chairs.

Romsey clincher Bill West

Romsey bowlers have not always found Lancefield a happy hunting ground, but the Redbacks seemingly wrapped up a finals berth with a 10-shot margin over the Tigers on Saturday.

Three rounds remain before the division one Highlands finals, and Gisborne, Kyneton Golf and Romsey are all in contention for the vital double chance. After successive defeats against Diggers Rest, Kilmore and Romsey, Lancefield slips to fourth spot, and will be keen to halt the losing streak at Trentham this Saturday.

Just after the break on Saturday the scores at Lancefield were level, but Romsey was able to seize the initiative with good wins by the Cam Austin and Matt Brundell fours; Chris Jolly’s crew won by nine for the Tigers, to no avail overall.

There were no surprises in the other matches, though ladder-leader Gisborne found cellar-dweller Diggers Rest a tenacious opponent, with the final margin just 10 shots.

Kyneton (fifth) had a 27-shot all fours up victory over Broadford, and now heads to Gisborne for a crucial contest on Saturday.

Trentham found the going tough on the synthetic at Kilmore, with Norm Cooke’s rink almost securing a point, while Kyneton Golf relaxed with the bye.

Woodend’s McIntyre Cup side was bundled out for an ignominious 54 runs on Saturday, with not one batter reaching double figures. ‘Extras’ top scored with 12.

The innings at Gilbert Gordon Oval lasted 23 overs in pursuit of Bacchus Marsh’s 9/184 c.c. (Tom Robson 3-25), and no one could see such a remarkable Woodend collapse coming.

Woodend still has a chance of playing finals, being in sixth position with a final Six in vogue for the first time.

At Gardiner Reserve, overs (S. Mackay 44 not out) Gisborne methodically accounted for East Sunbury, bowled out for 114 (L. Williams 51 – M. Allen 3-21, M. Torkington 3-21).

Trentham was at home, and supporters were pleased with the 5/207 c.c effort. Rory Healy scored 101, and Harley Forgo 97. Gisborne replied with 7/137.

Ganim hot, finals out

Veteran opener Chris Ganim (pictured) slammed a quick-fire century for Malmsbury on Saturday, but the club’s other two sides went down and seem certain to miss playing in finals.

Ganim hit 18 fours and a six at the MCG in scoring 116 against Gisborne’s division 2 side, Justin Murphy provided good support with 32.

Chasing 259, the Gisborne batters were all out for 129 in the 34th over. Tom Watson’s 46 was a standout, and six bowlers secured wickets.

Malmsbury’s Jensen Cup side battled at Hanging Rock, but once Palmy Singh was run out for 53 a collapse that saw five wickets fall for 10 runs was disastrous.

Quentin Keeble contributed 32 but 150 did not look enough from 40 overs, and Hanging Rock cruised to 3/151 in just 27 overs, all but ending the Berries finals hopes.

North Grade’s finals hopes disintegrated as Kyneton compiled a healthy 207 (Michael Rutledge 44).

The Berries improved on recent efforts with the bat, Simon Rogers 37 not out and Rilke De Podolinsky 37 doing well in a tally of 6/162.
