Soul virtuosos Emma Donovan & The Putbacks were the standout triumph at the 2021 Music Victoria Awards.

The group, which has a local connection, scooped up three awards at the 17th annual event at the Melbourne Recital Centre on Thursday evening including Best Soul, Funk, R’n’B or Gospel Act, Best Group, and Best Album for their long-awaited and utterly powerful LP Crossover.

The band is headed up by acclaimed Melbourne Indigenous vocalist Emma Donovan and rhythm combo The

Putbacks' lineup includes a wealth of local talent including drummer Rory McDougall and percussionist Justin Marshall, who both live in Castlemaine, guitarist Tom Martin who is based in Woodend and manager Ali Webb who hails from Kyneton.

Ali said the group, currently on tour with Australian music legend Paul Kelly, were elated to receive the awards and were thrilled to announce they would be touring regional Victorian in January.

"Our first stop will be Castlemaine's Bridge Hotel on Saturday January 29. We cannot wait to return to central Victoria with new music," she said.

The awards night also saw Castlemaine's Eliza Hull take home the inaugural Arts Access Victoria Amplify Award for Deaf and Disabled Acts with $3000 cash from Arts Access Victoria and a rehearsal package from Bakehouse.

"We're above most places. We're doing really really well," Ms Grieve said.

The newly relocated testing clinic is operating 9.30am to 11.30am Monday to Friday and staff say online or phone bookings are preferred.

While more than 95 per cent of eligible people living in Castlemaine have now been double vaxxed, the town's newly relocated COVID testing clinic is experiencing strong demand for testing, particularly from people who've attended exposure sites.

The drive-through clinic last week shifted from where it had been operating in Mostyn Street to the McGrath Street stadium carpark in Wesley Hill.

Clinical leader Bronwyn Grieve said the shift had been mainly prompted by a need to protect staff running the clinic from the effects of working in personal protective equipment in weather extremes as the days heated up.

"On average we're getting between 60 and 70 people a day coming through," she said.

"You can't predict it. Some days we might have 50 and the next we might end up seeing 150 people.

"Our numbers have been consistent since the end of September. We're still getting high numbers coming through.

"Most coming through are (those who have been at) exposure sites at the moment.

"But it's a real mixture, a lot of people travelling and needing a test before they travel. A lot of people are coming when they've got symptoms. And we've got some return travellers from overseas."

Tests conducted at the local clinic have, in some cases, returned positives.

"We are getting a number of positives coming back," Ms Grieve said.

"I think that because we've got a lot more mixing of people now there are more positives, whether they're from Castlemaine or from outside Castlemaine, there are positives brewing out there all the time."

Double-storey doubts

Plans for six double-storey units in Gisborne threaten to increase traffic problems, remove privacy and impact local flora and fauna, objectors fear.

The units are proposed for 35 Calthorpe Street on land of about 2024m² at the end of a cul-de-sac.

While surrounding land has unit development, most objectors expressed concern about the double-storey component that has heights of up to 8.6m.

Seven objections have been lodged referring to overdevelopment of the block and the build not being in keeping with neighbourhood character.

Immediate neighbours also hold concerns about the buildings overlooking and overshadowing their homes.

The site has several significant trees including a large mature English oak. Three prominent trees will remain on the site.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is expected to make a decision on this matter at its December 15 meeting.

Rejected plans to build in the shadow of Hanging Rock have since been revised and approved in a challenge at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Macedon Ranges Council refused a permit for a single-storey house at Newham earlier this year in a bid to protect the landscape and sightlines from the Rock.

It was a split 3-3 vote contrary to planning officer recommendation but supported arguments from neighbours that development at 1427 Rochford Road would negatively impact the landscape.

The 2.428ha site is located on the western side of an unmade portion of Highland Lane and is about 210m to the north of Hanging Rock with views to and from the icon.

VCAT reviewed amended plans for the development, which addressed objector concerns and improved bushfire management arrangements.

Revised plans reveal undergrounding the powerline and siting the dwelling away from the boundary.

VCAT member Michael Nelthorpe said the council's case failed because "it gives no weight to the site's physical context".

"This lot is surrounded by similarly sized lots that contain dwellings. This is the physical context of the Rural Conservation Zone in this location," Mr Nelthorpe said.

"The Significant Landscape Overlay is similar. It allows development that responds appropriately to the overlay’s objectives.

"The Environmental Significance Overlay does not prohibit new development. Rather, it seeks to ensure that water quality in the shire’s northern catchments is protected."

Mr Nelthorpe said the policies of the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme reflected these objectives and did not prohibit the development.

"The appearance of this dwelling in the local landscape will not affect views from the Hanging Rock lookout," he said.

"It will be one of many dwellings seen in foreground views, while the distant hills and ridgelines remain unaffected. I doubt that a viewer from this lookout would notice this dwelling if it was constructed."

He said the proposal fitted the existing pattern of development in this area of houses on lots of between 2ha and 4ha.

He said an agricultural use would be an anomaly in this area of small lots used for housing.

The council officer's support for an earlier version of the proposal had some influence in the VCAT decision.

Mount Alexander Shire residents plan to reframe and refocus their efforts to address climate change through the launch of an innovative new project – the Wararack Initiatives.

Launched at Victory Park last Thursday, the Wararack Initiatives will see council and the community work collaboratively on a 10-year Community Transition Plan addressing climate adaptation, cultural renewal and zero net emissions by 2030.

Formerly known as ZNET Mount Alexander Shire, the project has been renamed The Wararack Initiatives – wararack being a Dja Dja Wurrung word for ‘silver wattle’, whose sap is symbolic of the connection that binds Community and Country.

Nalderun CEO Kath Coff said the Wararack Initiatives was working in respectful partnership with Djaara Country and the Dja Dja Wurrung people.

"It’s not just about reaching zero net emissions, it’s also about how we thrive together and honour Country," Ms Coff said.

BnB plan for cottage

Plans for a bed and breakfast are being explored for a circa 1860-70s cottage at 600 Couangalt Road, Gisborne.

The proposed BnB comprises two bedrooms, two sitting areas, bathroom and wraparound veranda, as well as two car parking spaces.

Applicant Nick Hannett said the cottage was of historical interest to the property and region, and a permit would help to improve it.

"It's currently in a very average condition," he said.

"With planning approval and potential income, it will help us to assist with the offset of the costs of the renovation."

The proposed works do not expand the footprint of the building but would mean guests would be coming and going from the property during weekends and holidays.

The applicant said he expected the BnB would help to improve the shire's "severe lack of accommodation" and economic development.

A permit is required for the works as the property sits within a Rural Conservation Zone and has a Environment Significance Overlay.

One objection was received to the application with concerns for additional traffic, noise, light pollution and general concerns with people coming and going from the site.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council is expected to make a decision on the application at its December meeting tomorrow.

COVID-19 booster doses are available to anyone aged 18 and over who had their second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine more than six months ago. The date you had your second dose of vaccine is on your COVID-19 digital certificate.

A COVID-19 booster dose helps prevent waning immunity (loss of protection) against COVID-19. You can get a COVID-19 booster dose from a Victorian vaccination centre, a GP or a participating pharmacist.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) is not currently recommending booster doses for people: • aged 12 to 17 years • who are severely immunocompromised and have already had a third dose.

Three young trees were vandalised in the Gisborne Botanic Gardens over the weekend of December 4-5.

Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson said she failed to understand the motivation behind the senseless destruction.

“It is disappointing that such a thoughtless act can destroy such lovely young trees and put the progress of the planting back almost two years,” she said.

“The vandalised trees, two water gum (Tristaniopsis laurina) and one maidenhair (Ginkgo biloba), were planted in the last 18 months by the council as part of the implementation of recommendations of the Gisborne Botanic Gardens masterplan.

Bridge smash impacts V/Line train services

Coaches temporarily replaced trains on the Bendigo line between Castlemaine and Bendigo after a vehicle struck a bridge in Harcourt about 7.30am Monday morning.

Castlemaine Police said a truck towing a larger loader attempted to pass under the bridge but unfortunately the machinery was too high and struck the bridge.

Police diverted traffic around the site as the truck and loader were towed from the scene and the bridge was inspected to ensure it was not damaged in the incident.

The bridge was deemed safe and V/ Line services resumed just after 9am.

Friday mornings mean just one thing for a growing group of Castlemaine locals – time for a little French tête-à-tête.

Originally from France, Delphine Laboureau-Ormancey is a dual citizen who last year returned to Guildford after a 20year absence.

The French language teacher and tutor has now introduced regular weekly French chat and coffee sessions that take place at a Castlemaine cafe.

Delphine's weekly tête-àtête coffee chats are proving popular with a growing number of native French language speakers who have moved to the area, and also those keen to retain French language skills acquired earlier in life.

"I started these French chats and coffee in Melbourne about two years ago and when I moved back here last year I transplanted them with me," she says.

"The way to learn French is to be immersed in it," says Kirstie, a Castlemaine resident who was among the regular attendees one of the recent Friday morning gatherings.

"It's great to be able to meet regularly to practise French and have a coffee," says another regular, James, from Harcourt.

"It's just like having a chat with friends – sans stress," says Claire, another of those around the cafe table.

"There's definitely more French community here.

There's a lot of French people around," she says.

Now, responding to demand associated with this trend, Delphine is keen to start a new French playgroup for local youngsters, enabling them to be immersed in the language while enjoying playtime at Castlemaine's leafy Castlemaine

Botanical Gardens.

"I've introduced the playgroup on a trial basis for the next few Tuesdays to Christmas and if there is enough demand I'll be happy to continue," she says.

Delphine runs her own business, French Tête-à-Tête, providing a range of French language classes and tuition options, and has also been teaching French to students at the Castlemaine Secondary College.

Her offerings complement the French language classes for

raw beginners and intermediate speakers that are available through Castlemaine Community House, which French language tutor Emmanuelle Dubuc says have just wrapped up for this year but will return for a new term in early '22.

"Yes we will have the beginners' and intermediate classes back for the new term and I'm also going to start teaching little kids, which will be a new thing coming up next term," says Emmanuelle, a dual citizen, originally from Canadian French Quebec.

The eight-month restoration of the historic Kyneton Town Hall is set to be completed this month.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the Mollison Street building was one of the most substantial regional shire halls in Victoria.

“The municipality of Kyneton was founded in October 1857 and the history of Kyneton Shire Hall is one of fascinating challenges, competing uses and the influence of the introduction of 'talking movies',” she said.

“A unique combination of 1877-1878 offices and 1929 hall/picture theatre main body, which results in a street façade that dates from both eras and yet appears to have been built as one, these civic buildings in the heart of the town have been at the centre of local government for more than 110 years.

"I am delighted that in partnership with the federal government we have been able

to restore our Shire Hall to its former glory and that it will be not only a functional council building but its historical value and influence will be appreciated by many generations to come.”

Renovation works included repainting the exterior façade in heritage colours, restoration of render and architectural elements, works to the chimneys, and repair and replacement of downpipes around the building.

They also saw the repair of eaves on the south side of the building, replacement of awnings to the exterior of the theatre balcony exits, restoration works to windows, roof works, and additional façade lighting.

The restoration works were made possible with Macedon Ranges Shire Council's allocation of $632,000 and $300,000 from the federal government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program.

Two dogs have been rescued from mine shafts by local CFA brigades and a specialist unit from Bendigo in the space of week.

In the most recent incident, a dog was rescued from a shaft in a remote location in the Wombat Forest near Woodend in darkness last Friday night. Woodend CFA volunteers took some time to reach the remote location and called for the OSCAR mine rescue crew from Bendigo.

Incident controller Tim Duff said the OSCAR crew was brilliant to work with, ably assisted by the Woodend volunteers.

"Once on scene they discovered that the dog had fallen nearly 20 metres down the shaft," Mr Duff said.

"They then began the task of setting up the intricate rescue system for a CFA member to be lowered down to the dog.

"After about 90 minutes the dog emerged safe and sound, albeit a little shaken and very pleased to return to the owners."

Woodend crews returned to station around 1.30am the next morning after a four-hour effort in very difficult conditions.

The incident followed another rescue involving the OSCAR crews in which a bull-arab named Bruno spent a night underground in the Castlemaine Diggings National Park on December 4.

Incident controller David Button from Chewton Fire Brigade said the dog's owner

and a friend had been out exploring tunnels when the dog fell into a shaft.

“The owner couldn’t find Bruno that day despite a thorough search, so he returned the next morning," Mr Button said.

“That’s when he shimmied up to edge of the shaft, shone a light down the shaft, and saw the dog walk across the beam of light.

“It was probably a 20 or 30-metre drop but the dog wasn’t scratched or limping, and seemed not to be injured in any way.”

Mr Button said they also called in the OSCAR crew to help with the operation.

“We set up an area for the team who brought in their gear, went down the shaft, and found the dog, which was completely fine and in good spirits,” he said.

Fran Wigley said they wanted to make Kyneton's history interesting and accessible to everyone.

"We think we have succeeded with Discover Historic Kyneton," she said.

Discover Historic Kyneton has now gone into its third printing, and will be available in good bookshops in time for Christmas. The cost is $20, and the book can be obtained in Kyneton at Aesop's Attic, Collins Newsagent, Country Habit in Piper Street, and at the Midland Express office in Market Street.

An occupant limit has been placed on vehicles used by Gisborne, Woodend and Castlemaine SES units responding to emergency incidents.

A Victoria State Emergency Service spokesperson said VICSES had identified a weight issue associated with the front axle of its fleet of light rescue vehicles.

"It means that at this stage, occupant limits will need to apply to some of the fleet," the spokesperson said.

"There have been no reported incidents associated with these vehicles, with the issue being identified by a VICSES internal review of VICSES fleet.

"This situation does not impact VICSES’ road crash rescue response, which is provided through larger rescue vehicles. The light rescue vehicles are secondary/support vehicles."

The spokesperson said VICSES was working with third party specialists and the vehicle manufacturers to identify options for upgrading these vehicles to ensure a full operational crew could be carried.

"While there is reduced capacity to carry personnel in these support vehicles, VICSES will make arrangements to ensure other vehicles are available to transport the balance of crew to emergency incidents and ensure no impact on emergency response to the community."

There're all seven years old and are coming out of retirement for a very special event – welcoming a brand-new bronze pig to the village.

The new pig, Chin-Chin 2, has been installed in the secure stone wall surround-

ing the Newham General Store following the theft some time back of the original Chin-Chin.

So bereft were some village folk about the disappearance of their beloved bronze porker that they convened a fundraising committee to replace him.

When funds were in place for Chin-Chin 2, the top of the wall was strengthened to

stop the figurine being stolen again. And now all is securely in place, a parade of big decorated pigs from Newham's 2014 Pig Festival will be brought out for the celebration from 2.30pm at the Newham Hall before the procession to the store at 3pm.

And last but not least ...why pigs? Many, many years ago in the late 1880s a pork factory was a major industry in Newham.

One thousand more Victorian students can now see more clearly and concentrate better at school, thanks to the state government’s free Glasses for Kids program.

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas announced that 209 students across the Macedon electorate were among those to receive a free pair of glasses after having their vision tested at school. Children with undiagnosed vision problems often find it hard to concentrate at school, which presents challenges when it comes to actively engaging in their learning – but too many Victorian families avoid eye testing due to the prohibitive cost of glasses.

The Victorian-first program has helped more than 22,000 prep to year three students across Victoria have their eyes screened.

Lockdown came just at the wrong time for Persephone Dunn and Hayden Dykmans from 1st Kyneton Scout Group.

Just before Victoria went into its first lockdown earlier this year, the two Joeys decided to run a Foodbank food drive initiative in their schools.

Both Trentham and Kyneton Primary Schools supported their endeavours, with principals eagerly facilitating their plans to collect as many items as they could to help those in need.

Not only did they manage to deliver to Foodbank, but this act of community spirit was one part of a series of requirements they met to achieve their Joey Scout top award – the Promise Challenge Award.

Sadly, lockdowns put a pause on what was to be an ongoing collection from the schools, and it also halted the opportunity to receive their award in person.

"Even better was the great response to such a deserving cause and the lessons that brings to our youngest Scouts.

"We are proud that this initiative earned them a peak award, but we’re even prouder of their character, bravery, leadership and kindness."

Persephone has since progressed to the Cub section and is in her element, unphased that she is outnumbered by boys.

She hopefully has her sights set on her next peak award in the Cub section, and we may see her in leadership roles in the near future.

The Lancefield and District Christmas Farmers Market will be held one week early, on Saturday December 18, in time to stock up for your Christmas feasts.

The market will boast an abundance of local producers, with free-range Christmas hams from Belinda and Jason Hagan of McIvor Farm Foods in Tooborac, traditional and gourmet puddings and dessert sauces from Karen Kelly of Pud For All Seasons in Castlemaine, and the first cherries of the season from Waiyalet Puttsri from Harcourt.

If your mind is set on gifts, the market also has a magnificent array of specialty producers this month, with local products ranging from pickles and preserves, seedlings and flowers, honey, wine, olive oil and even panforte.

The townspeople of Lancefield have brought Christmas spirit to the market site, decorating the central plantation with Santa’s elves hidden among trees, pinecone Christmas trees, and a sleigh pulled by Lancefield’s very own Christmas black panther.

The Young Voices of Macedon, a not-for-profit community choir for young people, will grace the market from 10.30am to 11am, performing Christmas carols and other songs in their repertoire.

The results of two year's artistic contributions and collaboration are now on view at Maldon Preschool.

Local ceramic artists, Andrea Ebsworth and Ann Ferguson, contributed their talents, working with the preschool’s children and educators to make tiles and designs while overseeing the project.

This project has been especially significant in providing a focus for Indigenous culture and links to local flora and a way of connecting to the wider community.

“This project began as a way to beautify our preschool streetscape and connect the talents of local artists with present and past members of the preschool community. We hope that all our past families continue to see themselves as part of our kinder community,” said kindergarten teacher Leone Wallace.

“I’d also like to say a huge thank you to Ann Ferguson and Andrea Ebsworth, our local artists, as well as past teachers and committee members for their involvement and support of the project."

KYNETON The Pride Choir will be among the acts to perform at Friday’s event at the Botanical Gardens.

Castlemaine Botanical Gardens will echo with the sounds of Christmas carols this Friday evening as part of the annual 'Rotary Carols in the Park'.

After a year's recess due to COVID, the event returns with the promise of a wonderful night of entertainment and an opportunity to sing all your favourite Christmas carols.

Kicking off at 7pm, this year's lineup includes perennial favourites, Castlemaine’s own Thompson Foundry Band and Ellie Barkla, but also features Louise Clarke, Moldy Jazz, the Blenders and the recently formed Pride Choir.

And, of course, there’ll be a visit from Santa with gifts for the children.

To round off the night, the Lions Club will provide a barbecue, and there will be a coffee cart on site.

Rotarian and event coordinator Dave Tolputt said organisers were thrilled to bring back the popular event.

"After a couple of tough years with lockdowns and restrictions, how good will it be to be able to get together in the park and have a great night out!" he said.

"There’s going to be great music and something for everyone."

This year’s Carols in the Park will be at a new location in the botanic gardens near the rotunda. Those attending are asked to sign in using the event QR code upon arrival and show evidence of double vaccination.

The Riddells Creek Community Twilight Festival attracted many hundreds of people, with plenty of free entertainment and food available on a recent Saturday evening.

Favourable weather assisted in enticing many family groups along to the Walter Smith Reserve, with the sparkling lake as a background.

The festival was organised by the town’s neighbourhood house, and a survey is now being conducted to discover exactly what attendees thought of the event. Entries close on December 20, with a $150 voucher from Bunnings for the best entry.

Festival coordinator Celia Spykers and neighbourhood house manager Lisa Linton were pleased with the attendance and support.

Forest sites reopen

Victorians can now visit three recreational sites in the Wombat State Forest following the forest’s closure after extreme winds winds in October.

Carrolls Springs, Werribee River Picnic Area and Balt Camp are now open to the public.

The Public Safety Zone remains in place across all other parts of the forest to protect people from hazardous trees and to allow Forest Fire Management Victoria crews to safely carry out important recovery works using heavy plant and machinery.

FFMVic deputy chief fire officer Tony English said more than 80,000 hectares of forest and 1500 kilometres of roads and tracks had been impacted by the storm.

“Our crews have been working around the clock to assess impacted areas, clear fallen trees from roads and tracks, restore recreation sites while also reducing the bushfire risk ahead of summer,” Mr English said.

“We understand the inconvenience and frustration caused when the forest needs to be closed, but rest assured, our crews are working hard to reopen as many recreation sites as possible to coincide with the summer school holidays.

“We’re also working closely with our

partner agencies, including the Country Fire Authority, to prepare and plan for the upcoming fire season, including works to reopen roads and tracks that provide critical access for firefighters to responding to bushfires.

“By providing safer and quicker access for firefighters and heavy machinery, we greatly improve the chance of controlling bushfires before they spread and impact people and property.

“We are also using bushfire modelling technology in storm-impacted locations to help identify priority areas for recovery works to reduce the bushfire risk to communities and the environment, including planned burning, slashing and mechanical fuel treatments. The wood from the storm fall is green however and is unlikely to increase bushfire risk.

“We will continue to work with our partner agencies including local governments, Bushfire Recovery Victoria and VicForests to support the community and carry out critical recovery works so we can reopen sites once it’s safe to do so.”

DELWP will continue to review any closures in the Wombat State Forest, with additional areas expected to be open later this month.

Theatre co moves in Eve Lamb

After years of having no fixed abode, Castlemaine Theatre Company has finally secured a new base to call home.

Last week marked the final big shift of wildly assorted props, costumes, sets and equipment to the former Castlemaine College campus at Etty Street.

For years these items have been scattered about, stored in members' garages and in two large shipping containers at Chewton after the theatre co was forced a decade ago to vacate its former home base – an old Chewton church building – due to safety issues.

"In 2011 the council shut down the old church building we had been using because the roof was falling in and we got booted out," CTC committee president Kate Stones says.

"We'd also been using the Old Castlemaine Gaol to store some of our items and at about the same time the Gaol was sold and we had to get out of there as well."

Fortunately, the former Castlemaine Secondary College campus, currently still owned by the education department and leased by Mount Alexander Shire Council, recently presented the opportunity CTC had been waiting for.

"The Castlemaine Hot Rod Centre has leased part of the site from council and now they're (in turn) leasing some space to us,"

Kate says, describing the arrangement as "very affordable" for the theatre company, which boasts 300 members on its mailing list.

"It's very exciting. We've got an upstairs rehearsal studio, an office, and we can use a meeting room as well."

There's also ample storage space available for all the wild and wonderful props and pieces, which any theatre company that's been running since the 1950s might be expected to have amassed.

After months of delay, they've also finally managed to collect a new lighting rig to install in the new upstairs rehearsal space, which previously served as the secondary college's drama studio.

"We'd received council partnerships funding last year, together with Three's A Crowd and Rotary, to buy the lighting rig but due to COVID lockdowns we hadn't been able to pick it up until now. It had been just sitting in a warehouse in Melbourne," Kate says.

The new rig will now be put to good use as CTC rehearses for its upcoming January production titled Walk With Us: Untold Castlemaine.

Lead artist for the production Mark Penzak says the innovative production will take its audience on an hour-long walk through Castlemaine CBD to catch five different short performances along the way.

"There are five different writers and five different directors for each of the five minute performances," Mark says.

Mary talks to: Ed Pursey of Little Swallow Café Ed Pursey is one half of the dynamic team who own the Little Swallow Café in Piper Street in Kyneton.

He moved to Australia from the UK – London in fact – where he worked in the fast-paced finance sector.

Tired of the corporate world, Ed went to the charitable sector where he found life more rewarding. Office life and grey skies were not for him, so off to Australia he went and diversified into garden design and construction. With a horticultural background and qualifications he worked on and off in the sector since the early age of 14. In his youth, he signed up for a gap year working in a nursery and ended up staying for three years. Ed credits his love of gardening to his mother and believes most passionate gardeners can trace their interest back to parents and or grandparents.

Ed and his partner Dan bought Little Swallow from Steve Rogers (Midnight Starling Restaurant) in 2015. Little Swallow's location is one of original buildings of Piper Street, but did suffer extensive fire damage decades ago and the old bay windows in the front were replaced with the current plate glass front windows.

Ed and Dan work hard at Little Swallow and both believe in giving back to the community. The café is well known for great food and coffee and fundraising efforts for local community groups, such as RM Begg Aged Care and the annual Christmas giving

tree. Living in Redesdale in an old Victorian house they rescued from the demolition demons of Coburg, Ed has developed a Xeric garden. Xeriscaping is the process of landscaping, or gardening, that reduces or eliminates the need for irrigation. It is promoted in regions that do not have accessible, plentiful, or reliable supplies of fresh water and is gaining acceptance in other regions as access to irrigation water is becoming limited, though it is not limited to such climates. Xeriscaping may be an alternative to various types of traditional gardening. Xeric gardening is using minimal water, preferably none.

With a passion for roses, Ed found that many did not cope with the conditions, however the Madame Alfred Carrière – a very fragrant rose with clusters of large blooms and a strong structure – has done exceptionally well, as have the Pierre de Ronsard varieties. Ed does confess to “spoiling” some of the not so tough ones by planting them near the back door in a protected area.

A five-acre garden has been established as mentioned using the Xeric method, with the aim of having low water and time demands.

Ed stresses that this style of gardening does not mean it looks like a desert – with careful planning it is possible to achieve a full soft form. Plants of choice are * Cistus rose, green lush foliage a a good floral display * Evening primrose

New indigenous plants will soon spread their roots along the Little Coliban River as part of a revegetation project.

Tylden Primary School grade six and prep students recently participated in a Tylden Landcare program that involved making improvements the health of the Coliban River catchment.

The Healthy Coliban Catchment rehabilitation program is supported by the North Central CMA, Coliban Water and the Victorian Government’s Landcare Program.

With the help of school staff and Tylden Landcare Group, students spent time 'pricking out' small plants from seedling trays and placing them into forestry tubes.

The plants will then be kept for growing on before planting along the river in 2022.

The article 'Road graffiti message' (Midland Express, December 7) about a concerned Lancefield district resident drawing the image of a wombat on Three Chain Road to highlight wildlife road kills in the area, once again highlights the lack of action being taken by Macedon Ranges Shire Council in conjunction with the Department of Transport (VicRoads) to reduce these deaths.

It seems there is systemic disinterest among local and state government leaders to reduce wildlife road kills by the only effective means available, designating lower legal speed limits on roads through wildlife hot spots. Evidence for this became apparent when the Legislative Council’s Environment and Planning Committee last week released its findings into ecosystem decline in Victoria.

The inquiry covered virtually every possible aspect of ecosystem decline across the state and produced 54 findings and 71 recommendations. Yet one of the most common and increasing causes of native wildlife death and injury, collisions with vehicles, was not mentioned once in the report.

Even in its key threats to native species in Victoria table, under 'human impacts', wildlife road kills did not rate a mention.

It is difficult to reconcile ignoring road kills as a human impact with results from the Victorian Value Nature Foundation Survey, which found 86 per cent support pro-environment values like protecting the environment as guiding principles in their lives. Similarly, the constant stream of articles and letters to this paper highlighting public concern for wildlife and calls for council to take action to reduce road speed limits, suggests there is a prejudice against protecting wildlife in favour of not interfering with drivers' desire to travel at speeds that are unsafe for wildlife, unsafe to local rural road users and unsafe for the increasing number of pedestrians using these roads to engage with nature.

The current committee has rectified a policy vacuum it inherited by utilising a WorkSafe consultant to build a framework that protects the occupational health and safety of all staff, paid and volunteer.

Why should this committee apologise for taking actions to protect its hard-working staff from aggressive behaviour?

The committee will respond to questions from its members at the AGM on December 19 as the appropriate forum to discuss issues and as protocol dictates.

Hogwash Malcolm Mars, Castlemaine Claims by Mount Alexander Sustainability Group that its proposed Bioenergy from Waste facility at the Don KR Smallgoods site in Castlemaine will save 88,500 tonnes of carbon emissions every year are complete hogwash.

The carbon footprint of building, operating and de-commissioning the facility, together with the emissions from trucking in tens of thousands of tonnes waste every year, are all conveniently ignored.

Even if you accept the carbon accounting loophole used to ignore emissions from the facility’s operations, there’s no guarantee they will ever be abated over the facility’s life cycle. Emissions into the atmosphere from day one are real, regardless of creative accounting, and make a mockery of MASG’s target for Zero Net Emissions by 2025.

How can MASG claim to make such huge savings for our shire when council’s own Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality shows that emissions from waste were only 10,600 tonnes in 2018 and expected to decrease to 1615 tonnes in 2025?

These amounts represent a tiny fraction of MASG’s unsubstantiated figures and the answer seems to be that MASG’s claimed savings are attributable to other shires, particularly Bendigo, transporting tens of thousands of tonnes of their own waste into Castlemaine every year.

How benevolent of MASG to offer Castlemaine as a dumping ground for central Victorian waste without our knowledge or consent so that other shires can take credit for reducing their emissions.

Even the Morrison Government has more environmental credibility with its new recycling campaign, ReMade in Australia.

When discussing the need to create an industry for recycled goods within Australia, Environment Minister Sussan Ley was quoted as saying "It is not even about burning waste and turning it into energy".

By comparison, the only remotely green thing about Mount Alexander Bioenergy’s 'green energy' is the greenwash used to promote it.

It is a sad observation on public life today that there are individuals who resort to misrepresenting the very people whose volunteering raises the funds to support animal welfare in our community.

MAAW’s shelter goes without nothing and the animals in our care are very well looked after by qualified and experienced animal attendants.

When I recently nominated for the Mount Alexander Animal Welfare committee I was shocked to receive a reply from the president telling me my nomination was “withdrawn”. Rule 49 of the Model Rules says that any member has the right to nominate for election to the committee.

It is unlawful for a committee to adopt a 'policy' that conflicts with such a basic right mandated by the Constitution. This is especially so when the policy is clearly designed to further the interests of the present committee.

I was told I was “banned” from MAAW after I questioned the president about the

behaviour of committee members towards staff and volunteers. Up to 30 volunteers who have challenged, questioned or debated any actions, operation or conduct by the committee or current management have been banned or have been forced to leave, and three shelter staff terminated.

Volunteers have also been banned from the op shop. This is running rife – affecting people physically, mentally, emotionally and financially – not to mention the welfare of the animals.

The committee has spent MAAW funds on accountants, lawyers and human resources consultants to protect themselves and justify their actions. All of this money that was intended for animal welfare (the voiceless) in our community – an absolute disgrace!

I have again written to the president asking her to accept my nomination for vicepresident. I hope all members of MAAW will attend the AGM at 2.30 on Sunday, December 19 at the Town Hall and support members’ rights.

Throw a lifeline Tim Collins, Kyneton I wish to support Sally Stabback in her letter alerting the Kyneton community and all levels of government to the financial debt that RM Begg has accrued over the past two years ('We must step up', Opinions, November 30).

This aged-care facility is operated as a compassionate considerate home of happiness and friendliness – an atmosphere created by the caring staff, executive board of management, the RM Begg Ladies Auxiliary and volunteers.

Currently the RM Begg debt has increased and it is becoming difficult to operate the home viably under the pressure of current costs.

Why has this debt accumulated? I will answer the question. The home has $15,000,000 invested at only 0.4 per cent.

The cash has come from residents who have sold their homes in order to put down the $550,000 as stipulated by the government.

An alternative to paying the deposit is to pay $75 per day extra for three years, then this amount would be reassessed. The payment of $75 per day is the equivalent to interest at 4.98 per annuity as stipulated by the government.

The home is only permitted to invest in secure facilities, therefore they receive only 0.4 per cent from the investment of $15,000,000, which is only $60,000 per annuity, whereas 4.98 per cent as stipulated by government conditions would be $735,000 per annuity – a short fall to the home of $675,000 one year and over two years $1,350,000. Interest rates have been so low and are on hold at a low rate for the foreseeable future.

The home is being disadvantaged by this regulation. The government should pay the shortfall so the home can operate as it has in the past without loss.

This is a wake up call to the immediate families and friends of the home to contact their member of parliament and make known the predicament the home has been forced into by regulations as ruled by the government.

These elderly Australian residents who have during their lifetime paid taxes and helped to build and fight for our country.

All they require is a genuine quality in their retiring years.

At RM Begg all the money paid by the residents for care and maintenance plus donations from the general public, beneficiaries from deceased estates and community raised funds by various clubs and organisations are all committed to the welfare of the residents in the home including their accommodation and nursing expenses.

It is up to our government to throw a lifeline.

Music galore in the Maine Castlemaine is set to host two massive music events – 'Be Forgot' at Lot 19 on New Year's Eve and a one-day, multi-venue live music event the 'Town Folk Festival' in February 2022!

Choppers touch down Two firefighting helicopters arrived in Bendigo last week in preparation for summer to help protect communities and the environment from bushfires.

The helicopters will be used throughout the bushfire season by Forest Fire Management Victoria and Country Fire Authority to respond to fires across central Victoria.

FFMVic regional manager of fire and emergency preparedness, Carsten Nannestad, said the helicopters were critical when responding to fires.

"On high fire danger days, as soon as the call goes out for FFMVic or CFA to respond to a fire, the water-bombing helicopter will be deployed so we can hit the fire hard and fast in the initial stages and stop it spreading," Mr Nannestad said.

“An air attack supervisor in the smaller of the two helicopters directs the pilot of the larger water-bombing helicopter where to drop its load so that it is most effective in suppressing the fire. The AAS will also help the helicopter pilot locate suitable water sources near the fire.”

Mallee regional commander Bill Johnstone, said the arrival of the choppers was a significant contributor to controlling fires in central Victoria.

“These helicopters support the great work our crews do on the ground. Dispatching the aircraft simultaneously with fire trucks means we have a greater chance of limiting the size and spread of fires,” Mr Johnstone said.

“The flow-on effect of this is that potentially less property is lost or damaged by fires and having rapid response aircraft reduces the length of time firefighters are required on scene.”

FIRE DANGER PERIOD Fire restrictions came into force yesterday (December 13) for Mount Alexander and Hepburn shires, and come into force next Monday (December 20) for the Macedon Ranges. During the FDP you cannot light a fire in the open air unless you have a permit or comply with certain requirements.

If you don't obtain a permit, you could be breaking the law and may be prosecuted.

Poetry Prize awards postponed Local poets who entered the 2021 Castlemaine Poetry Prize are advised that the annual awards ceremony has been postponed until the new year.

The ceremony has been tentatively booked for Saturday, January 22 at the Phee Broadway foyer at Castlemaine Library at 10am.

All prize winners will be contacted with an invitation to the celebration in the new year.

Thanks again to all the talented poets who entered poems in the annual prize, which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2021 and is proudly coordinated by Elliott Midland Newspapers and sponsored by Mount Alexander Shire Council.

Selected entries, including the winning poems, will be published in our sister paper the Castlemaine Mail following the January event.

Kyneton Country Basketball League kicked off its season opener last month and in the middle of competition between the women’s and men’s games, a very special presentation was made.

Alan Simmons was presented with a Diamond Service Award by Brendan McCarthy on behalf of Kyneton Basketball Association and Kyneton Country Basketball League for 50 years of dedication as a leader, committee member, president and head referee.

Simmons has mentored many people over the years and continues this dedication up to the present day.

Saturday stableford: Terry Gamble (10 handicap) won A-grade with 33 points, from Jesper Hansen (10) 32, with Peter Cameron (18) taking out B-grade with 37, from Glenn Cook (11) on 36.

Wednesday stableford off white tees: David Austin (23) 36 from David Stark (32). Peter Cameron two NTPs. Lancefield As predicted, Di Brennan wrapped up Lancefield’s 54-hole women’s championship for 2021 with 105, 99, 108 – 312, and also took out Player of the Year.

The B-grade champion was Florence Meyer with 337, whole took also took out the Belva Blomberg Trophy (best net score for 54 holes) with 235, two clear of Brennan.

Mount Macedon It was a welcome back visit from Warrnambool by Dom Angarano who joined 18 very soggy gentlemen for Mount Macedon’s midweek par event.

Rob Devereux (20) was the only one to

achieve handicap or better on +1 and he took out B-grade from Keith Miles (20) on minus 1.

Shooter Dawson (14) had -1 to top Agrade from Jarod Plowman (6) on -2.

Plowman’s eagle 2 on the 11th was one of the highlights, and Gerry Timmins earned congrats for his -11 score hence doing the dishes!

Luke Robinson, Brian Collins and Patrick Doyle were the winners of Saturday’s Christmas hamper stableford, the latter continuing his stellar run of form on top of recent victories in the Gold Plate team event and becoming the Open champion for the first time.

Romsey The final of the John Laing Shield and a par event was played at Romsey on Saturday.

There were no excuses with the whole of Romsey Park in top condition, a credit to the club’s volunteers.

In the match-play final between two of the club’s biggest hitters, a ‘high risk – high reward’ approach by Mitch Atlas on several back nine holes paid dividends after he was all square with Shannon Wright after 11 holes.

Atlas eventually won 4/2 with life members John Laing, a winner of his own shield in 2017, was on hand to make the presentation.

The par event winner was Mick Nicholls Jnr (20) who finished +4, from Davey Kenney (16) +2 and captain Mal Mottram (7) square. The latter two were also NTP. Earlier in the week Les Gaunt (0) and

Keith Hocking (22) won their W. E. Tom Shield semi-final on the 19th against Atlas and Kenney.

Rainy conditions meant two just three players turning out for the final Wednesday round of the year. Jenny Hartley had the best score.

The follow-up Brownlow style count amid cocktails and nibbles for the Rose Scanlon Trophy resulted in Jenny Hartley having 49 points, with Darlene Baker runner-up on 30.

Wednesday syllabus is now in recess until the second week in January.

Trentham Keith Webster is back again as president of Trentham Golf Club.

Other executive members elected at the annual meeting on Saturday were Russell Hanson (secretary), David Nugent (treasurer) and John Hudson (captain).

Appreciation was expressed to Simon Ovenden, Stuart Leong, Di Lewis and Julie Hanson for their splendid contribution.

In the monthly medal event on Saturday, B-grader Michael Hogan spreadeagled the field with an outstanding 80-19-61 to earn the medal and end up a four-stroke lead in the Summer Cup. Colin Wilson won topped A-grade with 79-12-67, and Jack Conway 88-23-65 led in the C-graders.

The women’s winners were Jenny Clarke with a nett 69 in A-grade, and Yvonne Sillett with 72 in B-grade.

Woodend Woodend’s December Medal event was won by B-grader Mick Bird with a fine 83-22-61, three ahead of his nearest opposition.

Guy Moxley 73-6-67 took out B-grade with 73-6-67 on a countback.

Medal of Medallist and daily winner for the ladies was Veronica Sullivan with 9020-70, from Loretta Matthews.

The ladies held their presentations and a light lunch last Wednesday, and enjoyed a Christmas break-up at Hanging Rock Café the following day.

Men’s stableford on Saturday: Andrew Whitton won A-grade with 37 points, and B-grader D. Woodman had the day’s best score of 40.

Rangers’ night nig ght o off n nights ights The venue booked, the tickets sold, the trophies ready and excitement at boiling pointing.

After a couple of attempts, the night of nights for the Macedon Rangers Soccer Club finally became a reality on Friday December 10.

Dressed to impress club members descended on Glen Erin, the room beautifully decorated, parents seated, celebratory drink in hand waiting in anticipation for the players to arrive.

In true football style, with the encouragement of MC Simon Pinnock, the teams arrived to the clapping and cheering of proud mums and dad – the night had begun!

President Charles Bender welcomed everyone, reminding them that from small things big things grow.

The Macedon Rangers Soccer Club came to be due to the dream of two men, Matt Bender and Craig Emmerson.

They had an idea, they had a vision, they had a dream, which was now a reality. The Macedon Rangers Soccer Club had come to be.

As everyone knows, a community sporting club relies on the generosity of local businesses and the Rangers are no different, without their sponsors the story could be very different and to recognise and thank them, three of the four individual awards were named after them.

This year the club had Macedon Ranges Party Hire Coaches Player of the Year, the Cheshire Building Spectator Player of the Year and Hire a Hubby’s Golden Boot.

The club's three coaches, Bodey, Matt and Craig, supported by their team managers, Bec, Cynthia and Mick, proudly spoke about each of their players as they presented a team member trophy to each of their players.

The nerves and tension were becoming apparent as players waited for the winners of the Coaches Player of the Year, the Spectators Player of the Year, the Golden Boot winner and the most improved player for each of the teams.

The last award of the evening was the president’s award. The committee announced that this award would now be known as the Bender Emmerson Trophy and in years to come the club would always remember where it came from.

The inaugural winner of this prestigious trophy was club secretary and girls team manager – Cynthia Pinnock.

Ms Pinnock said the club thanked everyone involved this year: sponsors, players, parents, team managers, coaches, committee and club president.

"We thank you for believing in us and riding the wave, knowing from little things big things grow," Ms Pinnock said.

"Our expectations were exceed this year and 2022 will see our team numbers double if not triple.

"We can’t wait to see our existing Rangers but also the new Rangers when try outs and training kicks off in late January and February."

Seven shots to spare Bill West In the seventh round of Highlands pennant bowls on Saturday, Gisborne and Lancefield consolidated top-four positions with seven-shot margins over respective opponents Kyneton and Trentham.

In the division one match of the round at Kyneton, the Gisborne visitors had just one winning rink but that was sufficient to get over the line. The eight-shot buffer by Ethan Higgins’ crew was too much to overcome as the other two rink contests went down to the last end, one tied and the other in favor of Mark Smoljo (K) by a single shot. Ladder-leader Lancefield was in diabolical trouble well into the match against a visiting Trentham combination with plenty of experience.

Trentham had two rinks well clear at one stage, but strong revivals by the Bev Holmes – eight ends in succession – and Chris Jolly fours gave the Tigers a late advantage.

Skipper Norm Cooke was in great draw form and his battle with Jeff Holmes who also played very well was a highlight.

Cooke’s very last bowl forced a tie to stop the Tigers collecting maximum points.

The other two matches were one-sided, as Kyneton Golf gained 16 points with an overall margin of 35 shots at a venue that proved troublesome in the past.

Only one rink was close, with Graham Edwards home by 17 shots and Adrian Plowman by 15.

With confidence high, Golf is now in fourth place, and aiming higher, with a big match at home to arch-rival Kyneton this Saturday. Should be worth watching.

Sixth-placed Kilmore beat old rivals Broadford by 22 shots, bouncing back from the previous round loss at Trentham.

Other division one matches in the last round before the Christmas-New Year recess are Trentham v Romsey, Gisborne v Kilmore, and Broadford v Lancefield.

Macedon and Trentham occupy the top two berths in division two, where Gisborne stumbled with a 10-shot defeat at Kilmore, and Kyneton accounted for fourth-placed Broadford by five shots.

Gisborne3 downed Romsey by five shots and these sides hold the top two places in division three. There’s a real traffic jam among the next four contenders.

Lancefield moved to third with an all fours up victory against Gisborne4.

Saints look to 2022 Trentham Football Netball Club is optimistic about season 2022, following the club’s annual meeting earlier this month.

Jason Shaw was re-elected for a further term as president. Samantha Whitehouse is senior vice-president, and Corina Sabo junior vice-president. Peter Love is secretary-treasurer. General committee members are Sarah Jane Purcell, Wendy White, Mark Keogh, Craig Dovaston, Jack Griffiths, Nick Shearer, Rick Evans, Dean Mighell, and Stuart Huner.

The club is keen to recruit additional committee members and helpers, with families of junior players and senior players encouraged to join the ranks.

AWARD WINNERS Major award winners for the Saints in 2021 were: Senior football – Joel Cowan best and fairest; Alister Ferrier runner-up.

Players celebrated Gisborne Football Netball Club has celebrated the achievements of its players in 2021 with an outdoor presentation on the oval at Gardiner Reserve.

The Bulldogs held a get-together on Sunday, December 5, many turning their minds to the 2022 season with netballers and footballers already in training mode.

Tony Andrews was the winner of the Ernie Bullard Memorial Trophy for Club Person of the Year.

A stalwart of the club for many years as a supporter, volunteer and committee member, he also on the role as chief COVID officer, ensuring players could meet the rules to play football and netball.

Senior football: Prolific ball winner Brad Bernacki was the best and fairest winner, with leading goalkicker Pat McKenna runnerup.

Reserves: Michael Steinbach B&F, from Matthew McDonald. Leading goalkicker Haydn Doricic.

Under 18s: Connor Flynn B&F, from Rye Penny. Harry Thomas and Matt Merrett tied in goalkicking.

Tigers’ latest life member Russell Pattinson is the latest addition to the life member ranks of Lancefield Football Netball Club, which has its origins 150 years ago.

“You are a very worthy recipient,” lifetime local Denis Graham stated at the club’s presentation day on December 5, after delivering an eloquent summation of Pattinson’s virtual lifetime association with football at Tigerland, both as a player, office-bearer and fundraiser.

It all began when the nine-year-old Trevor Barker lookalike came from the foot of Mount William to play in a primary schools competition on the Lancefield oval in 1966. His father Bob was a premiership coach and life member of the club.

Russell Pattinson moved into the Lancefield U16s team, which won the club’s inaugural junior age premiership. He was a young star who played interleague and the group of kids from the primary schools competition were mainstays of the senior side for the next two decades.

Pattinson played just under 200 senior games from 1972 to 1987, when he won the club’s best and fairest. He spent several years away studying in Sydney, being flown home by the club to qualify for finals.

By the late 1970s he was one of a handful of locals in the First XVIII as the club went on a spending spree in an attempt to win a

premiership.

A great on-baller who could ‘just run, run and run’ and always be where the ball would end up were key attributes.

Graham reflected on where the name 'Boots', which has stuck to this day, came from, and how he had played in three senior grand finals – against Broadford, Woodend and Kilmore.

“After his retirement, his contribution to the club and more broadly to the community continues to this very day,” he said, referring to Pattinson’s cricket club life membership and his 20 years as a founding director of the Lancefield Community Bank, which provides many sporting clubs with grants.

From 2007 to now he has been a key member of the ‘100 Club’, which has generated an enormous amount of dollars to sustain the Tigers with work behind the scenes.

Generosity of personal time and passion for the club, his gifted business, financial and interpersonal skills made his nomination as life member an easy choice.

After accepting the award, Pattinson said it was a very humbling day.

He rated Ross Sporton as the best Lancefield player of his time, closely followed by Georgie Clarke.

Asked about the best opposition players he replied “All of them!”

A Palmy Party!

Malmsbury’s top two cricket sides secured good wins on Saturday, with a swashbuckling century by Palminder ‘Palmy’ Singh (pictured) the undoubted highlight.

In the Jensen Shield match against Sunbury at Riddell, Singh effectively snuffed out Sunbury’s hopes.

Malmsbury bowlers contained the opposition to 5/173, with opener Dylan Caruna shining with 84., and Kyle Fisher claiming two wickets.

The run chase began slowly, and at one stage the Berries were 3/41 before the Palmy Party clicked into gear.

Singh’s unbeaten 104 included eight sixes and nine fours as Malmsbury powered to 5/178 with seven overs to spare.

In division 2, Riddell batted first on the Mighty MCG and amassed a fair score of 6/160 c.c. from 40 overs.

Dan Fish was in fine form with an un-

beaten 91, and Michael Rosacker contributed 43.

The bowling was good, with Chris Knott shining with 3-8 from his eight tight overs.

Malmsbury’s batsmen shared the run chase load, reaching 5/163 as Matt Cox 44, David Nolte 33, Brendon Cleaver 28 n.o. and Justin Murphy 24 all contributed.

Playing at Tylden, Malmsbury’s North Grade side was happy to restrict Wallan to 8/103 as bowlers and fieldsmen excelled.

Melanie Sharp 2-21 and Simon Rogers 2-20 did best with the ball.

In reply, the Berries again struggled with the bat with Tenzin de Podolinsky 22, Tom Kimber 18 and Steve Tautkus all getting a start. It was not enough, as Malmsbury was all out in the 30th over for 92.

Captain’s knock pays off Bill West

A decisive unbeaten 78 from skipper Jason Wilson ensured Gisborne accounted for Romsey in McIntyre Cup cricket on Saturday.

The important showdown at Gardiner Reserve was highlighted by the individual captains Wilson and Ben Way. Struggling at 9/110, Romsey reached a competitive 9/150 c.c. after Way and tailender Jamie Taylor added 40 runs, with Way unbeaten on 54.

Opener Mick Allen contributed a stylish 35 for the home side, but it was the unbeaten 72 runs for the fifth wicket between Wilson who hit nine fours and a six while Josh McDonald remained 17 not out in a tally of 4/154.

Romsey and Gisborne are now in fourth and fifth position on the ladder after five rounds, with Sunbury United and Wallan the only unbeaten teams.

Woodend’s first win in the previous round was followed by an insipid batting display, being bundled out by Sunbury United for just 81. United’s bats Sean Fogarty 54 n.o and Damien Edwards 28 n.o. raced to 0/87 in just 13 overs – a rare 10 wicket win in the top grade.

A good recovery saw Romsey reach 177, and promising young spinner Jake East weaved his magic to bundle Gisborne out for 155, with D. Paterson claiming 3-29 and Glenn Waites making 48.
