A local analysis of housing prices over recent months indicates it's getting harder than ever to crack into the housing market in Mount Alexander.

Newstead and District Affordable Housing member John Nieman says the group's analysis of the local property market highlights the trend.

The former local councillor is also raising concerns about what the future may hold for some prime local real estate - the old Newstead community tennis court site - which is currently owned by the council and which NDAH now hopes to see used for more affordable housing to suit changing demographic needs.

"We ran an analysis of the Midland Express property section and it shows that the entry price for Mount Alexander for the past five or six weeks is in excess of $600,000," says Mr Nieman, who has a degree in sociology and a background in industrial engineering.

"We arrayed the asking prices smallest to largest to establish a median asking price for houses in Mount Alexander Shire only.

"The following are the results with medians expressed in thousands of dollars: Dec 15, 2020 $639k; Jan 26, 2021 $628k; Mar 16 $612k; Mar 23 $607k; March 30 $664k; April 6 $700k.

"From this raw data the overall current median 'ask' is somewhere about $630,000.

"How does this compare to wages, which represent buying power? If we divide the ask by the current average annual earnings, taken as $80,000, we get a figure of 7.9, which we can call an affordability index. This establishes the relationship between earnings and housing expenditure.

"We built our first house around 1971 and it cost $18,000, my betterthan-average annual earnings were then $6000.

"If we apply the same process to the then parameters we get an index figure of 3.0. This indicates that housing affordability is about 2.6 times harder to achieve now than it was then."

Mr Nieman says NDAH is particularly concerned to see home ownership slipping out of reach of many and changing demographic needs not reflected in new housing being built.

He points to Newstead's disused double tennis court site - a central 2000 square metre land parcel currently held by Mount Alexander Shire Council as ideal for an affordable "cluster housing" project.

"There's a building boom going on in Newstead but most of what's being built are three-bedroom houses with ensuites," he said.

"But there's a fair proportion of people here who are singles, elderly and living by themselves. It's terribly important to keep them in the district and ageing in place.

"At the moment council is doing its four-year plan and part of that is asking 'what have we got that's a useless asset? Do we sell it off or do something with it?'

"We want to be part of that conversation," he says.

Mining plan ‘not justified’

A farming community is fighting a mining exploration plan that spans a 486km2 interest area, taking in part of Macedon Ranges’ east.

Red Rock Australasia’s EL007329 application is for a five-year mining exploration licence in an area described as "to the west of Kilmore, extending south beyond Wallan and west towards Romsey".

Monegeetta farmer Randall Gerkens is one of several parties objecting to the plans that he fears would be detrimental to existing farming activities, amenity and sensitive flora and fauna.

“The potential disruption to existing farms, businesses and land uses is not justified,” he told the Express.

“Exploration and/or mining would have disastrous environmental impacts in the area, which is home to a number of threatened native species.

“The nature and quality of the land is such that it is too sensitive in nature for rehabilitation to return the land to a condition even approximating its former quality.”

For the first two years, Red Rock Australasia proposes low-impact field exploration including historical research, field mapping, aerial surveys, soil sampling, rock chipping with what it describes as “minimal impact on the environment”.

The company says, should future higher impact exploration activities be planned such as exploration drilling, it will involve a submission of a low-impact exploration plan or work plan to Earth Resources Regulation, detailed rehabilitation plans, and monitoring and auditing.

Throughout the exploration planning process, Red Rock Australasia says it will consult with individual landholders and the broader community, provide information on planned exploration activities and allow opportunities for feedback to be incorporated into the planning process.

The application is now being advertised and invites submissions from the community.

Progressive dinner returns

The concept will be given a 2021 twist when the 'Romsey Progressive Dinner – Poetry in Motion' is held on Saturday, April 24.

by Macedon Ranges Shire Council, Romsey will buzz with the excitement of 150 dinner guests moving in three groups of 50 between three restaurants to enjoy a three-course meal of the finest local cuisine while experiencing the expressive performances of different genres of poets.

To add some fun, the order of restaurants is a surprise.

Between each course, diners will be led outside by volunteers through 'creative zones' to view the creations of local makers while being entertained by street musicians.

Police investigate Clarkefield death Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was found dead in Clarkefield.

The man was found with head injuries at the property on Havelock Road about 5.30pm last Tuesday.

Investigators are still determining if the death is suspicious, but are looking for any witnesses or anyone with dash-cam or CCTV footage from the area.

"The exact circumstances surrounding the death are being investigated and it is yet to be determined whether the death is suspicious," Victoria Police said in a statement.

Local author goes global

Castlemaine writer, author and actor Madeleine Ryan recently released her debut literary fiction novel A Room Called Earth in Australia and the UK. The brilliant debut novel from the neurodiverse author hit bookshelves in America and Canada last year and has finally landed in Australia after a six-month delay due to COVID. A Room Called Earth has received acclaim the US in the The New York Times and as one of Bustle's Best Books of 2020.

The book has also had glowing reviews in the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age since its Australian release early last month.

Ryan is thrilled with the positive response she has received to the book so far.

The novel explores a young woman’s magical, sensitive and passionate inner world.

"It's a really fun adventure and a story that I think will appeal to a wide audience.

It's full of joy," she said.

The novel is set in Melbourne where Ryan grew up and tells the story of a young woman who is getting ready to go to a party. She arrives, feels overwhelmed, leaves and then returns. Minutely attuned to the people who come into her view, and alternating between alienation and profound connection, she is hilarious, self-aware,

sometimes acerbic and always honest. And by the end of the night, she’s shown us something radical about love, loss and the need to belong.

Madeleine said the book gave a unique insight into the world of someone who was neurodiverse but that was secondary to her intent.

"It's wonderful if it promotes understanding but my main focus was to take readers on an adventure. It's a wild ride - 24 hours in the life of this joyous, illuminating character," she said.

This hyper-saturated celebration of love and acceptance is a testament to moving through life without fear, and to opening ourselves up to a new way of relating to one another.

Ryan will be appearing at Clunes Booktown on May 1 where she will be appearing in discussion with clinical psychiatrist Andrew Fuller and at Bendigo Writers Festival on May 9 with fellow authors Ella Baxter and Elizabeth Tan where they will be discussing the way the boundaries can be stretched as they find the words to describe all kinds of experience from curiously offcentre angles.

There's a chance to step back in time for a History Tea event allowing guests to explore the grounds of Romsey's historic Seymour Cottage this Sunday.

It is the first time the cottage has been open to the public since 2017 when it was closed due to its deteriorated state but now its beautiful autumn garden can be enjoyed as part of the Macedon Ranges Autumn Festival.

The event will include a photographic exhibition with the cottage in focus and a music quartet as visitors sit under the trees to enjoy an afternoon tea of sandwiches and scones with jam and cream, and tea.

Romsey and Lancefield Districts Historical Society members are keen to reintroduce members of the public to the heritage-listed cottage at 20 Palmer Street, which is a rare example of a goldrush pre-fabricated farmhouse in Victoria.

It has been said it is "one of the most interesting buildings in Victoria, having been constructed, probably in the 1850s, out of numerous pairs of meranti doors believed to have been made in Singapore. There is also some reason to believe that it contains some of the earliest wire nails used in Victoria".

Dates for the construction of Seymour Cottage vary between 1855 and 1856. For nearly 60 years it was the home of Sidney and Elizabeth Seymour who settled in Romsey in the mid-1850s. The couple was from Somersetshire, England, before emigrating to Australia as part of the British government’s early bounty scheme.

The Romsey region offered rich agricultural land and prospective farmers began to successfully sow root vegetables, peas and cereals as well as grazing sheep and cattle. Seymour was one of several Romsey farmers who successfully grew potatoes.

In 1981 the last occupant of Seymour Cottage, Isa Allen, gifted the cottage, under the custodianship of the Romsey and Lancefield Districts Historical Society, to the residents of Romsey.

Since then, the group has put in great efforts to restore the building but the structural integrity of Seymour Cottage is seriously compromised and still requires urgent conservation works.

Romsey and Lancefield Districts Historical Society encourages visitors to the cottage grounds for the special open day event from 1pm to 4pm on Sunday, April 18.

Entry is by a gold coin donation to the historical society.

The ladies of the Romsey Uniting and Anglican Churches will provide the afternoon tea for $15 and the proceeds will go to those churches.

The historical society's latest book Seymour Cottage Romsey: 165 years of History and Heritage will also be on sale.

Eve Lamb The huge diversity of work in Beverley Downie's new exhibition spotlights a prodigious talent.

For this acclaimed local artist, her new exhibition at Castlemaine's Market Building is a bitter-sweet celebration that comes as she shoulders a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

"Both my father and mother had Alzheimer's but my father lived to 102 and when he was 80 he taught himself to do leadlight," says Downie whose remarkable career as a painter, art teacher, gallery director, costume designer, printmaker, quilter, textile artist and musician spans five decades.

"I suppose I'm pragmatic about it," she says.

"Most people don't know that life is going to wind up. But I have a fair idea. This is a celebration. It's what I've done with my life."

There is clearly much to celebrate.

Well acknowledged also for her capacity as an opera singer, Downie has exhibited extensively throughout Australia and overseas, picking up numerous prestigious art awards and accolades along the way.

Her work has shown at Sydney Opera House Exhibit Hall, Moebler International, Tasmanian Visual Arts Travelling Exhibition, Holdsworth Gallery Sydney and Piaf Gallery Hawthorn.

Two influential years spent in Florence, Italy, saw her graduate from the Rosary Graduate School of Fine Arts, successfully completing a Master of Arts.

There's been two decades spent teach-

ing art and music, working at Genazzano FCJ College, Wesley College, Camberwell GGS and Castlemaine Secondary College, while Downie's musical talents have also seen her instrumental in establishing the Goldfields Opera Company.

Featuring more than 200 of her original works, the new exhibition that launched on Friday represents the significant diversity of Downie's creative oeuvre spanning multiple genre, media and scale.

"It's been rewarding, difficult too," the artist shares.

"It's been a challenge but people have been wonderfully helpful."

Community panel appointed

Forty people will represent members of Hepburn Shire on the Hepburn Together Community Panel, with almost 200 people applying for a place on the group.

Mayor, Cr Lesley Hewitt, said the council was impressed by the enthusiasm and interest from people to join the panel and help to guide the direction of the 10-year Community Vision and four-year Council Plan.

“This demonstrates, once again, that our community has a strong drive to get involved and help to inform council decision making,” Mayor Hewitt said.

“We understand that other shires, including much larger ones, have not had such interest. We really appreciate the effort that people have made, and we thank all 193 people who applied to join the panel.

“We selected panel members randomly based on age groups, ward, gender and key demographics such as those who are parents, have English as a second language, identify as LGBTQIA+, live with a disability, and more."

The panel has a mix of targeted random recruitment via letter, text and email and self-nominated applicants.

Youth survey opens

Mission Australia’s Youth Survey 2021 is now open and young people aged 1519 in are encouraged to have their say.

The youth survey is Australia’s biggest of its kind that provides crucial and current information about the views and sentiments of young Australians. It’s frequently referred to by organisations and governments, informs policies, and gives an insight to families and individuals providing hoping to develop an understanding of what young people are thinking and experiencing.

This year’s survey questions will again focus on young people’s housing situation, disability and experiences of discrimination, along with new questions to better understand the impact of COVID-19 and stress management.

The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete and can be completed online

Hogan’s to increase gaming machines Romsey Hotel proprietor Jim Hogan will increase electronic gaming machines at his Wallan Hogan’s Hotel from 45 to 65 despite push-back from Mitchell Shire Council.

The Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation approved the hotel’s gaming licence amendment after assessing the “overall social and economic impact of the proposal increase would be neutral and not detrimental to the wellbeing of the Mitchell Shire”.

The application was accompanied by a proposal to increase the hotel’s annual community contributions from around $56,000 to $100,000 for non-profit groups and sporting organisations as a condition of the EGM approval.

The proposal also included an estimated $2.76 million redevelopment of the hotel, which is expected to create the equivalent of six full-time jobs.

Mitchell Shire Council sought to review the commission’s decision at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal with concerns of increased problem gambling.

The council felt “the limited social economic and social benefits of the amendment are outweighed by the substantial detriment of problem gambling”, which it said was already prevalent in the community and would be exacerbated by this increase.

Gaming was first introduced to the hotel in 2004 when approval was given

to install 30 EGMs. A further 15 were approved in 2012.

The regional limit for gaming machines in the Mitchell Shire is 299 and the proposal for 20 more at Hogan’s Hotel would bring the shire total to 229.

VCAT was tasked with determining what weight should be attributed to the assessment of the impacts of the proposal, and ruled in favour of the commission.

One of the sporting clubs to benefit from Hogan’s community contributions was Wallan District Cricket Club, which gave evidence that without the hotel’s input the club would increase its annual fees, which in turn would reduce access to players and likely exclude some children from being able to play.

Some of the hotel’s contributions have been to organisations such as GoTAFE, Camp 4 Cancer and the Wallan Ambulance Auxiliary.

The community contributions are guaranteed for the life of the hotel’s licence.

While VCAT stated there might be some negative impact on the social wellbeing of the community as a result of the proposal, it found there were a range of factors that suggested the social harms would be minimal. These included the low number of machines requested; that Mitchell was not determined to be significantly disadvantaged; hotel measures to manage problem gambling; reduction in trading hours; and the room layout.

Horse show returns Sunday

Castlemaine and District Agricultural Society will once again hold its Clydesdale and Miniature/Shetlands April Feature Show at Castlemaine's Camp Reserve this Sunday.

Show secretary Debbie Hamilton said it had been two years since they ran the popular April Show for Miniature Horses, Ponies and Shetlands in conjunction with the Clydesdale Foal, Filly and Mare Show.

"Due to COVID-19 we were unable to run any events in 2020. So we are super excited for this one. We expect the top state breeders to attend," she said.

"This year we have included cross-bred Clydesdales as well as our usual pure-bred gentle giants, along with foals, geldings, fillies and mares. Ridden Clydesdale classes and long reins. There is also a small horse harness section," Ms Hamilton said.

"It will be a fun day for all and local horse lovers are invited to attend and see these beautiful creatures in action."

Judging starts at 10.30am in all three rings.

Belinda Lee will be judging the Minis and Shetlands classes and Bruce Hamblin is judging pure-bred Clydesdales, while Kelly Hamblin will judge the cross-bred and small harness.

The Castlemaine Lions Club will be in attendance providing onsite catering. Gate entry is just $5 Adult. Children to age 16 free. $5 entry per horse per class.

A motor vehicle accident involving a power pole on Mount Macedon Road saw a power outage to about 680 households in Mount Macedon and Macedon last Thursday.

The incident occurred about 1am and roads were closed between Cheniston Road and Phalemphin Road.

Deserving attention A guide to our beautiful and hardy native peas

Eve Lamb Friends of the Box Ironbark Forests members Bernard Slattery and Bronwyn Silver have teamed up to produce a comprehensive guide to native peas of the Mount Alexander region.

Their new book, Native Peas of the Mount Alexander Region, identifies and details numerous common native pea species.

It's the fourth in the Friends' well-received series of local plant guides and has been published with assistance from the Castlemaine Field Naturalists Club and the Wettenhall Environment Trust.

"Native pea plants in the bush are hard to see when they're not in flower and impossible to miss when they are," Bernard said.

"Peas are beautiful, hardy and good for soils. They improve our soils.

"The problem is that many pea plants have quite similar flowers, which tempt the observer to lump them all together as egg and bacon plants.

"In fact most peas are easy to tell apart.

"Even the tricky ones aren't impossible as long as you're prepared to get up close and take a good look."

The new guide offers detailed notes on 30 different native peas found in the bushlands of north-central Victoria.

"We want people to know the country better, just to understand what's in it, and what the function of plants is," Bernard said.

"All native plants have got a function.

Bronwyn Silver and Bernard Slattery have teamed up to produce a comprehensive guide to the native peas of the Mount Alexander region.

"A lot of people will look at the bush and think it's just scrub - but every bit of it is important and has a function."

Written in plain language and generously illustrated, the new guide offers readers a way into an often under-appreciated - yet

very important - part of our natural environment.

"We've already had a terrific response, lots of orders," Bronwyn said.

Native Peas follows on from the Friends' previous popular guides to eucalypts,

wattles and mosses.

"The director of the Native Plant Society bookshop in Melbourne emailed us yesterday and ordered 30 and noted that there are very few books available on peas and they deserve more attention," Bernard said.

CycleSafe Mount Alexander and Bike Bendigo are once again gearing up to support tweens and teens to get on their bikes and be independent in their transport.

CycleSafe's Penny Gilbert said they'd sold out of spaces for their co-hosted January school holiday program and were now offering a one-day autumn workshop with a focus on how and where to ride safely around Castlemaine.

"Funded by Healthy Heart of Victoria and Mount Alexander Shire, we will get you where you want to go - library, sports grounds and ice cream shops," Ms Gilbert said.

Teens and tweens love the independence a bike brings. That was the impetus for 11-year-olds Scarlet and Indi of Campbells Creek to attend the On Your Bike! program in January this year.

Travelling independently is a step towards the freedom that many teens search for and takes pressure off families who have busy parents and after-school activities to manage.

“I loved the idea of building up Scarlet's bike skills so she could ride around independently without having to stick to footpaths,” Scarlet's mother Fiona said.

"I felt it was important to understand road safety before starting high school next year

and for my own peace of mind."

Indi, who originally thought she already knew enough about bike riding and didn’t need to participate in the workshop, said she would definitely recommend it to others.

"There’s always more to learn, you don’t know everything," she said.

The On Your Bike! school holiday program begins with a focus on bike control skills. It also covers strategies for riding safely in and around Castlemaine. Participants will ride on the best back streets and paths so that they stay away from car traffic as supported on-road practice.

Scarlet and Indi both ride to school in Campbells Creek every day and intend to keep this going when they move to high school next year.

"We met a lot of people at the workshop too, and I’ve seen them around town since," Scarlet said.

Two of the other participants met and found they were going to the same high school and have continued their friendship.

The On Your Bike! holiday program for teens and tweens will run in Castlemaine from 10am-3pm on April 16.

Secretary sought Castlemaine Technical College Past Students Association is on the hunt for a volunteer secretary to enable it to continue its operations.

CTCPSA president Bill Sikora said the position was unable to be filled at their recent Annual General Meeting and without a secretary the association, which has been operating since 1934, would be unable to continue.

"It is critical that we fill this vital role if we are to continue to undertake our role organising local reunions and most importantly sponsoring our long-running awards at the Castlemaine Secondary College that celebrate and encourage the students of today," he said.

The organisation is reaching out to past students to encourage them to consider

getting involved and help keep the tech's history alive.

Mr Sikora said their current secretary Andrew Lewis was stepping down and was happy to do a handover with the group's new secretary.

"Andrew has done an incredible job and is more than happy to show our new secretary the ropes.

"The CTCPSA meets around four times a year, the secretary deals with meeting minutes and correspondence relating to running the annual reunion and awarding of scholarships and maintains our website," Mr Sikora said.

Intersection works progress Right turns from Saunders Road into Station Road will not be permitted at any time for up to five months.

Residents and commuters wishing to travel northbound, toward New Gisborne Station, will need to turn left onto Station Road and complete a U-turn at the roundabout. Pedestrians and cyclists will also notice some changes to travel, with the temporary closure of the shared user path south-bound towards Gisborne. They are asked to follow signs that will direct them to cross Station Street and along the western side of Station Road.

RRV recognises these changes may be inconvenient but says they are necessary diversions that will allow them to safely complete the intersection works and without long detours.

Works continue to progress on the first phase of Gisborne’s major intersection upgrade at Station and Saunders Roads.

By mid-April Regional Roads Victoria expects to have completed widening the intersection to make room for new turning lanes and signals.

RRV also expects works to be completed on widening the Gisborne-bound side of Station Road from the childcare centre to the roundabout including constructing traffic lanes, bike lanes and shared user paths.

From mid-April there will be further works to widen the intersection and widening the eastern side of Station Road from the childcare centre to the medical centre.

From mid-April, RRV will move into the next phase of the upgrade and there will be significant traffic management changes.

Journey back to to o our ur past past Take a journey back to our mechanical past at the Mount Alexander Vintage Engine Club's 24th Annual Vintage Engine Rally this weekend.

The rally will take place at MAVEC's home base at the Dave Bennett Reserve alongside the Muckleford Railway Station and is always a great day out for the whole family.

The popular annual event was cancelled last year due to COVID but MAVEC members have been very busy in the interim erecting a massive new shed and can't wait to welcome everyone back for the 2021 rally to be staged at their new improved facilities.

This year’s featured engine is 'Cooper' and the featured tractor is 'Field Marshall/Fowler'.

To add to the excitement, MAVEC members were also delighted to take delivery of a new toy last week - a Jas Smith Chaff Cutter.

MAVEC president Stephen

O'Connor said the machine was built in Ballarat pre-1940 and members would be conducting chaff cutting demonstrations throughout the weekend.

"We will have everything on display from vintage chainsaws to drag saws, and static engines to tractors. There will also be visits by the Castlemaine Car Club, a Vintage Caravan Club and hopefully by a local truck club that was unable to have its rally due to COVID," he said.

MAVEC secretary Graham Mason said club members couldn't wait to welcome everyone back.

"We have worked hard to set up our headquarters and it's a great space for displays and events and to host our club meetings or tinker on projects. "All the action will centre around the new facility. There will be plenty to see and do," he said.

"We will have a jumping castle for the kids, coffee and ice cream vendors, onsite catering and on the Saturday a contingent of 20 Ferguson Tractor owners will be

Macedon’s Bolobek garden will open over the ANZAC Day weekend.

Open Gardens Victoria will open Forest Edge at Blackwood – a stunning autumn garden framed by the Wombat State Forest – this coming weekend.

Situated in the historic town of Blackwood, Forest Edge is a cool climate, undulating one hectare garden brimming with autumn colour from its beautiful trees including a large golden ash, maples, ornamental pears and pin oaks. A large 160-year-old Irish strawberry tree (Arbutus sp.) at the entrance features spectacular bark and canopy.

Visitors can wander down paths to a small bridge that crosses a stone-lined creek leading to an ornamental pond. Sculpture, found objects and garden art feature throughout the garden among perennial plantings, bulbs and a rose garden.

Formerly an old bank, the owner’s home dates back to 1861. Buildings to the rear of the house have been created to replicate an 1860s streetscape – including a wheelwright, a blacksmith and a house of somewhat dubious repute – now used as a garden shed!

Proceeds from the open garden will be donated to Blackwood Outdoor Specialist School. Extras on offer include antiques, second-hand books, metal garden art and plants for sale.

Forest Edge at 26-28 Martin Street, Blackwood will be open from 10am – 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18.

Bolobek is more than a garden – it is a working farm running sheep and beef cattle, where the garden and the farm fit together beautifully.

Bolobek Open Garden is located at 70 Mount Macedon Road, Macedon. It is open to the public April 24-25, from 10am to 4.30pm.

Pole walking

The popular 10-week nordic pole walking introduction groups are again happening in Castlemaine.

The weekly one-hour groups will happen at Castlemaine Botanical Gardens on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, starting in mid-April.

Lynne is a current participant who described herself as very inactive before starting nordic pole walking.

"It’s a social group, it gets me out of the house. You make the effort to go and then you thoroughly enjoy it," Lynne says.

"I don’t want to miss it now."

This project is a CHIRP Community Health and Castlemaine Community House partnership.

Romsey Neighbourhood House has received a generous donation from the town’s lone supermarket, in appreciation of excellent service to the community, particularly through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this month, Romsey IGA manager Craig Hendricksen handed over a $3028 cheque to neighbourhood house representatives who were busy with a fundraising barbecue outside the supermarket.

"It’s tremendous to receive this financial backing from the local level,” NH coordinator Michelle Balthazer said.

The donation comes via the IGA Community Chest, and Mr Hendricksen said there was also $4000 earmarked for Romsey Fire Brigade, which the supermarket supports on an annual basis.

Ms Balthazer thanked Romsey IGA, stating the donation would be put to good use and came at a time when the neighbourhood house was trying to meet many community needs largely related to the impact of the pandemic.

"Our community co-operative launched last year is going well, and having a commercial community kitchen operating to provide meals, and enable others to cook there as well, is a major step forward," she said.

The new hairdressing facility at the co-op has also been welcomed, as has the Saturday special Clothe it Forward initiative.

Recently the co-op managed to secure a large range of brandnew clothing, approximately valued at $10,000, which had been headed for landfill.

Learn street art Romsey Neighbourhood House has created an opportunity for youth aged 12 – 17 years to get involved in street art classes as a response to an established and ongoing need for youth engagement in the area.

Under the guidance of Vince, Fuzz and Rukkus, experienced street artists who have worked on various youth street art projects in the past, this will be a fun and interactive space for the local youth to get creative, meet others in the community and express themselves in an encouraging and safe environment.

The first class will be held at the Romsey Community Co-Op on Wednesday April 14 from 5.30pm for one hour, with the hope to continue on a weekly basis with enough interest and participation.

No previous experience or artistic skills are necessary and all within the age range are encouraged to join in!

Dog lovers are encouraged to hit the pavement with their four-legged friends this May to raise funds for the RSPCA through the Million Paws Walk.

The annual event is a chance for people and their pooches to walk together to raise funds in support of the thousands of animals that need the RSPCA’s help every year.

In response to ongoing developments of COVID-19, RSPCA Victoria has adapted the much-loved national dog walking event for 2021.

Replacing organised community events and running in a revised event format, Million Paws Walk: Walk This May encourages 30-minute walks each day of the month, in their backyard or neighbourhood, to continue the fundraising tradition.

RSPCA Victoria CEO Dr Liz Walker hopes Victorians will take the opportunity to celebrate their four-legged friends by walking to fundraise for animals in need.

If dogs really are man's best friend, then shouldn’t we be treating their health as important as our own?

Research from natural pet healthcare provider PAW reveals just how strongly Australians feel about their pets, and in contrast how inactively they approach the healthcare of their furry friends.

One in five dog-owning Australians prefer the company of their pup to their friends, with a whopping 40 per cent saying they would rather spend time with their furry friend specifically when they’re upset or sad.

A quarter of dog-loving Aussies say they talk to their dog about their problems too, and more than half a million of us have even tried their dog's food just to see what it tastes like.

Two thirds (66 per cent) of Australian dog owners do not give their dogs any supplements or ongoing medications - with one in five (21 per cent) claiming they don’t know enough about these products to be confident they’re giving the right ones.

And, only 15 per cent have a healthcare plan in place with their vet.

“Our dogs are part of our families now more than ever, particularly with how much time we’ve spent at home over the past year,” said Ayumi Uyeda, managing director ANZ at Blackmores.

“What we saw from our research was that many Aussies aren’t taking an active approach to ensuring their dog is happy and healthy, because they didn’t understand how.”

“PAW by Blackmores wants Aussies to know that taking care of their furry friend can be simple and is easily available.”

When it comes to mental wellbeing, the situation is similar.

Froomes Bridge consequences Richard Yates, Barkers Creek Mount Alexander Shire council will decide at the April 20 council meeting whether to replace the original historic and restorable single-lane Froomes Bridge.

This would eliminate yet another unique piece of our heritage in the name of progress.

Do we need more traffic and heavy load limits literally everywhere? Even next to the most beautiful and serene place, the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens?

Then there are the consequences with increased traffic and larger trucks for accidents.

Anyone who has driven Froomes Road heading west from the bridge, will soon encounter a frightening, blind hairpin turn with east-bound traffic crossing over into your lane as if they were racing at Bathhurst! Try it at your peril. And the council wants to increase traffic and even bigger truck access on this road?!

The council needs to abandon the plan of destroying more heritage and creating an even more dangerous situation for the public on the narrow hairpin turn from Froomes to Mary Street.

Bridges, swimming pools and fly-in fly-out council officers Ian Edwards, Castlemaine In regard to the historic decision to put in a large two-lane concrete bridge on Barkers Creek at Froomes Road, or keep a one-lane bridge as desired by the overwhelming majority of Castlemaine residents, let me remind the councillors of the aborted indoor swimming pool that was going to be plonked on The Western Oval.

In both cases 'world's best practice' council officers came up with hot-shot ideas to improve Castlemaine as they saw it.

In both cases there was no community consultation with locals as to what WE wanted for Castlemaine.

In both cases a great deal of council money was wasted and in both cases (I very much hope) a sympathetic local body of councillors in the end had to intervene, carried along by the protests of residents.

Unfortunately in both cases the only way to straighten out the mess seems to revert to the status quo.

The council officer who came up with great idea of tapping one million dollars of federal government flood relief funding to erect a truck-suitable two-lane bridge over Froomes Road (which has not been flooded in living memory), has long moved on. I hope his CV benefitted from gaining the government grant. I certainly wish him no ill will, he was doing a great job as he saw it.

The problem is he never bothered to think if that was what the community wanted.

Councillors, you have a difficult decision coming up, but you are, thank goodness, locals.

Greedy development K Coulter, Kyneton I’ve noticed that the subdivision planning application PLN/2019/573 for Edgecombe Road for more than 20 factories and a housing subdivision on the 160 acres back to the golf course, is being taken to VCAT. Sadly the developers seem to want it all their own way and are rejecting and challenging all council protection clauses, placed by council on the planning permit.

It seems to me, all these developers are interested in is money.

This is not about jobs and growth, this is about greed at the expense of permanent destruction of habitat and quality of life for

the people of Kyneton.

These large corporations risk ruining our quality of life, via increased traffic, pollution of the local environment, threats to our local tourism and small businesses, yet these faceless corporations do not seem to care how much there destroy the area, as they don’t live here and view the people who do, as “expendable”. On the other hand, people who live in the area, who work, run small businesses, have families and a history with the area, they will not see a penny from this development. Will these developers be around to help if this area is hit by bushfire and fire trucks can’t access their tiny subdivision roads? Will they be there, directing traffic at the bottleneck they’ve created as people from north Kyneton try to flee into town from fire driven by northerly winds? No jobs on a dead planet Trevor Scott, Castlemaine The LNP government continues to export coal and gas in vast quantities and tells us that what we need is a 'gas-led recovery' from the coronavirus pandemic.

The Labor Opposition just held a conference and says it now has a plan to address Climate Change so that we will achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The plan includes replacing all existing petrol and diesel motor vehicles with electric powered ones by 2030, but it does not have a plan to increase the density of new housing in the city that would lower building footprints and reduce urban sprawl.

In spite of the untold cost to the federal government of this pandemic, neither political party can come up with a plan to transition from fossil fuels to renewables within the next decade, which is absolutely essential to a stable climate for all future life on this planet.

Sure, the pandemic is a huge threat to human life and many countries are still experiencing thousands of cases and a huge

loss of life every day. But in terms of world population, these losses are minuscule compared to the potential loss of life and habitat due to Climate Change.

What is the cost of a fossil fuel job keeper scheme for out-of-work coal miners and workers on coal-fired power stations compared to the emergence of a climate that will make the planet unlivable? It's been said before but I'll say it again. There's no economy and no jobs on a dead planet.

Serious adverse effect Tamasine Dale, Castlemaine Your article of March 23 – ‘Bridge on Froomes decision time looms’ – draws attention to a very significant decision facing our local council at its next meeting. As a member of the Froomes Road Bridge Action Group, I wholeheartedly support the comments of Lisa Pollard and Ian Edwards that appear in your article. Mr Edwards has wisely urged the council to take a long-term view in making its decision.

I consider that if the existing historic bridge needs to be replaced it is imperative that it is replaced with a single-lane bridge (with a pedestrian path). Such a structure would be in keeping with the area, which abuts our beautiful botanical gardens.

The council’s website reminds us that the gardens are one of regional Victoria’s oldest botanic gardens and that their scale reflects Castlemaine’s prosperity during the gold rush and community desire to highlight the success of the town. The gardens are registered on the Victorian Heritage Register.

A double-lane bridge would have a serious adverse effect on heritage values and the amenity of the area, including its quiet rural aspect. It could also negatively impact safety. A double-lane bridge would significantly increase the volume and size of vehicular traffic.

Given the opposition of a large number of local residents to a two-lane bridge, it would appear that a driving force behind such a bridge is access to the Don KR Castlemaine plant. However, that plant is readily accessible along Walker Street and Richards Road, which are superior access roads. It is undesirable that Froomes Road, and its bridge, be a major access route to that workplace.

Full FOGO rollout date set for July

Macedon Ranges Council's Food Organics Garden Organics service will be available for shire-wide in July.

This completes the roll-out, which began in February 2020 to more than 16,000 properties across the shire.

Those new to the FOGO service will receive a letter detailing upcoming changes in the coming weeks, including the date for bin deliveries.

“Since the FOGO bins launched, over 9,257 tonnes of organic material has been saved from landfill,” said Shane Walden, Director Assets and Operations.

FOGO material is turned into a nutrient-rich compost for farms and gardens across Victoria. It will also help local school gardens grow, with council supplying free compost during Compost Awareness Week (May 2-8).

“A recent audit of rural general waste bins showed that 45 per cent of the contents were either compostable or recyclable through correct sorting into the right bin," Mr Walden said.

“The shire-wide roll-out of FOGO ensures all households can dispose of food and garden organics in an environmentally friendly way. This reduces the amount of waste that goes into landfill.”

Mr Walden said FOGO services complement existing home composting systems by taking overflow during the colder months when compost can be slower to break down.

“Many people manage their households food and garden waste through home composting, worm farms, chickens and livestock. FOGO services can compost things that worms and chickens don’t like to eat. This includes things such as meat, bones, seafood, rose prunings, and weeds, including noxious weeds (for example, blackberries and gorse), pet droppings, compostable kitty litter, compostable packaging and more,” he said.

Three generations support RM Begg Easter Saturday saw the RM Begg Auxiliary conduct its Annual Easter Fair on the lawns at the front of the nursing home in Epping Street and across the road at Bolton Hall.

The glorious Easter weather provided the perfect backdrop for the many stalls offering people with a wide range of handknitted items, toys, jam, cakes, plants, books and more. And with the support of Rotary conducting a barbecue, Alan Simpson from Faraday Olives and Deborah Keating with her mosaics there was something for everyone.

A successful raffle was drawn on the day with the major prize being a meal for

four (plus wine and drinks) generously donated by Daniel and Ed from Little Swallow Cafe in Piper Street Kyneton.

Other prizes contained wine, again generously donated from Kyneton Ridge Winery.

Prize Winners were: Grace Brosnan, Marg Ewington, Marj Tangey and Helen Rehn.

The auxiliary thanks local businesses and community members for their contribution in helping them to raise nearly $5000.

All money raised by the auxiliary is used to enhance the welfare of the residents at RM Begg Aged Care.

Community projects that help vulnerable road users are set to receive a boost, with applications now open for a Transport Accident Commission road safety grants program.

The Community Road Safety Grant Program provides grants of up to $30,000 for projects that focus on delivering benefits to at-risk road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists across Victoria.

Not-for-profit groups and organisations, local councils and schools across the state will share in funding of $800,000 throughout the year to develop and implement effective community-based road safety projects targeting local road safety issues.

In 2020, the diversity of successful projects to receive grant funding across the state included lower speed limit trials, council road safety strategies, community education programs, safe cycling routes at schools and improved crossing safety.

Acting Minister for Roads and Road Safety Jacinta Allan said community groups and local councils knew their local roads best, and played a pivotal role in identifying issues in their area.

“We want communities to spread the word about road safety in a way that will resonate with their locals – these grants allow groups to do what will work best in their area to keep everyone safe,” she said.

“I’m encouraging all community groups with a vision for a road safety project to get involved and apply for a grant.”

TAC CEO Joe Calafiore said road trauma had far-reaching impacts on local communities and the grants aimed to reduce the risk and impact in and around local roads.

“Road safety is shared responsibility and this grants program is just one way we can help councils and community groups achieve our goal of reducing road trauma,” Mr Calafiore said.

Applications for the TAC Community Road Safety Grants 2021 round of funding is now open until May 7.

Underdogs Lancefield emerged as Central Victorian Region Saturday pennant bowls champions for season 2020-2021on Saturday.

Lancefield will now play in the State Pennant Championship finals at Moama on the Anzac Day weekend (April 24 and 25).

And Gisborne’s midweek premiers made it two CHBD teams off to Moama with two comprehensive victories on Sunday.

Playing at Gisborne, the home side comprehensively accounted for Dunolly 62-24 and then Central Wendouree 48-22 to clinch the regional midweek championship.

“This is a great effort by our little club,” elated Lancefield Bowling Club president Sue Holmes (pictured) said after the round robin regional championship matches were completed at Sebastopol (Ballarat) on Saturday afternoon.

The pennant champions from Central Highlands, Ballarat and Goldfields division played off in the indoor arena, with the surface running at around 14 seconds.

In the morning game, favourite Victoria BC (Ballarat) led late in the match against a tenacious Dunolly (Goldfields), but the game turned dramatically over the last few ends.

Dunolly fought back, and on the last end, skipper Chris Williams played two masterly bowls, one a draw shot near the ditch and the other a drive to dislodge Ballarat’s shot bowl to snatch a two-shot victory.

Lancefield then played Victoria, knowing a narrow loss could be as good as a victory.

While Victoria prevailed overall by seven shots, it left Lancefield with the task of downing Dunolly by at least 13 shots overall to clinch the region title.

While the match was close early, the Lancefield players knuckled down and drew away for a convincing 58-26 all fours up victory.

Jeff Holmes’ four led the way with an inspiring 20-shot win, and Peter Linehan won by 10.

“We played really well, and it was a big effort by everyone,” commented former CHBD and Lancefield president Gary Dickenson.

The CHBD is thrilled two of its clubs have been good enough to reach this state level.

CHBD president Ian Ball and secretary Ian Guymer congratulate Lancefield and Gisborne, and wished the bowlers well at Moama.

Up to the challenge

A Woodend trio scored a runaway win in Romsey Golf Club’s 2021 Women’s Challenge Bowl held last week.

Cheryl Payne (30 handicap), scored 39 points, Veronica Sullivan (22) 35 and Cheryl Garner (25) 30 for a combined stableford tally of 104, nine clear of an Alexandra team.

The bowl event began 28 years ago, when the ornate trophy was donated by P. And V. Newell.

There were 13 clubs from around the Dalhousie district and beyond represented on Thursday, and players welcomed a well-presented course showing the benefit of recent fairways and drainage improvement, and the use of recycled water.

The Romsey club appreciated the event being sponsored by TJ Scott & Son Funberal Directors, with managing director Kelly Scott present for lunch and to hand over the prizes.

Individual grade winners were: A- Kilmore’s Helen Dennett (15) 36; B- Jenny Coleman (Marysville) 35, with Kilmore’s Sophie Banon (38) playing in her first away tournament topping C-grade with 37.

GOLF results Golf history There were plenty of bleary eyed golf enthusiasts in the Express circulation area yesterday morning as Hideki Matsuyama created history by becoming the first Japanese player to ever win a major.

Matsuyama, 29, won the US Masters by a shot. Australian Mark Leishman finished fourth, four shots behind the winner.

Kyneton Mark Sciberras clinched an epic final to take out Kyneton Golf Club’s 2020 championship.

The battle of the low markers was not decided until the 36th hole.

The B-grade winner is David Ryan with a 4/3 margin over Terry Kot, and Peter Kewniuk clinched the C-grade championship 5/4 against Peter Moore.

Other players competed in a stableford, with Jason Coley (14 handicap) 38 points beating Harrison Huntley (11) on a countback.

Glenn Cook (2) Moore, Coley, Jesper Hansen and Jenny Kerr were NTPs, with Hansen and Kerr the super pin winners Wednesday stableford: Ross Martin (13) with 38 points, Paul Moore 37 . Women – Lorna Beaumont (35) 34.

Visitors from Kooringal, Hepburn Springs, Lancefield, Royal Park and Future Golf were welcomed.

The women’s monthly medal and B-grade went to Michelle Werner 95-30-65 from Joan Gibbs 94-27-67 last week.

The A-grade winner was Lois Scott 96-2472 from Marg Scoble 98-24-74.

Players are reminded the first round of the RSL singles knockout begins this Saturday.

Mt Macedon The 4BBB stableford was sponsored by long-time supporter the GREAT Gisborne Gazette, with the publication’s Bryan Power presenting the winners’ trophies to Peter Sinclair and Graham Bysouth.

They won on a countback from father and

son team of Steve and Matt Hohmann.

Trophies celebrating the members’ achievements in the season before COVID were also presented.

Major winners: Matt Willis (medal of medallists); David ‘Rock’ Hudson (singles matchplay); Shooter Dawson and Walrus Ward (pairs matchplay); Paul Burrows (best putter).

Perfect weather meant low scores in the Riddells Creek Nursery Mug o’ the Month stableford. Overall and A-grade winner was Levi Moss 41 points from Marcus Ward 40.

Damien Leatch took out B-grade with 40, from Tiger Penney 36.

In recent Saturday competition Trevor Atkins won the play-off for the February medal, and Brian Freestone’s 61, six strokes under his handicap, bagged the March medal.

Romsey The final of the Algie Mitchell Shield event produced a tight struggle at Romsey last week.

Low marker Mick Squire had to concede shots on 11 holes to Scott Williams, and neither could open up a sizeable lead.

Williams squared the ledger by winning the 16th and 17th, and the 18th was squared. Down the 19th, and Squire claimed the shield.

Saturday’s par event was not favoured by the weather, and only three players finished close to their handicaps.

Andrew Laing (off 17) was the winner with +1, from Pat Chisholm (13) minus 1 on a countback from Kevin Dunn (29).

Wednesday’s stableford was over nine and 18 holes.

Nine holes: Jenny Hartley (23) 19 points, Shirley Shelton (24) 18, Darlene Baker (17) 17.

Eighteen: Anthony Lakey (22) 36, from Rob Slade (17) 35, and Andrew Laing (17) 30.

Gavin Winwood defied the elements to shoot a nett 73 and take out the medal (and B-grade).

The ladies played their April medal event on Wednesday, with Lyn Murchison successful with 98-28-70 from Sheena Carter 107-35-72.

Trentham Adverse weather conditions tested the

mettle of Trentham golfers on Saturday.

The men’s A-grade winner of the stroke event was John Bell with 78-7-71.

James Coyle 86-18-68 topped B-grade, and C-grade went to Peter Gainey 93-2568.

Tough opener for Tigers Tiger Talk It was a tough opening round for Kyneton footballers in all grades against a very strong Golden Square at the Kyneton Showgrounds on Saturday.

The U18s were the most competitive in the three games.

The young Tigers competed very well, only falling short in the last quarter. Some finishing skills going inside 50m were the main difference in the low-scoring game.

In the Reserves, Kyneton fielded a strong team but it was the faster, younger legs of the Bulldogs that prevailed.

Kyneton seniors went into the game with 13 debutant players and a very young squad. In the end they were unable to hold up against the pressure for long enough to be competitive.

It was four goals apiece midway through the second term with the home crowd getting hopes up for an upset, but from that point it became a one-sided game.

Golden Square's run and skill overwhelmed the Tigers, running out comfortable winners.

No doubt Tigers’ coach Paul Chapman learnt a lot from the game about the league, and also his young squad.

It was great to see so many local lads who have come up through the junior

sides get an opportunity this season and the club looks forward to great improvement from the team.

A huge crowd of members and supporters turned out on Saturday to support the club on an amazing day and night for the community, regardless of the result.

Kyneton senior women footballers won 8-19 (67) to North Bendigo 0-0 (0).

The Tigers played at North Bendigo Reserve and the cold and windy conditions suited them perfectly.

The girls began strongly with two goals against the wind in the first quarter.

The Tigers continued to attack for the remainder of the game, with T. Ainslie kicking three goals and being best afield.

Others in the best list were: U. Van Dyk, B. Hateley, P. Webber-Mirkin, T. Ainslie, S. White and J. Savoia.

Kyneton A-grade netballer lifted spirits with a seven-goal victory after the club’s other sides had found the visitors too strong. Best on court in the main match was Brooke Mangan. The girls played an amazing team game, providing ongoing support for one another throughout the whole four quarters.

Tegan Beckerley and Tay Durham stepped up in goals with the absence of quality players Michelle Fletcher and Claire Oakley.

Bloods dominate

Castlemaine Football Netball Club played host to South Bendigo in its 2021 Bendigo Football Netball League season opener at the Camp Reserve last Saturday.

The Magpies recruited strongly over the last 12 months and also continue to develop their youth and made a positive start in the first term putting the first goal of the match on the board, while holding the Bloods to seven points. The sides were seven points apiece at the first change.

In the second term South broke the shackles and slammed on eight goals to the Magpies' two for the term and held a commanding 46-point lead at half time.

Castlemaine threw everything they had at the Bloods in the third term adding a further two goals but South found another six despite defensive pressure which forced numerous other chances to go begging. At the final change the margin had blown out to 84 points.

In the final stanza the Bloods kept the Magpies goalless but they too continued to be plagued by inaccuracy finishing the day 19-29 (143) to Castlemaine 5-7 (37).

Returning forward Klai Jermyn was a shining light for the Magpies kicking three of Castlemaine's five goals, with fellow returning Magpie Jackson Hood kicking the other two.

150 gamer Dave Stephens was among the best on ground along with young gun Will Moran, Declan Slingo, Klai Jermyn, new recruit Liam Wilkinson and stalwart John Watson.

The Magpie Reserves also had a tough day on the park going down by a big margin to their Bloods counterparts.

Best on ground were Ian Bracken, Ashton Keogh, Ben Moran, Luke Pritchard, Jordan Cochrane, Nicholas O'Brien.

The Under 18s turned the tables having a fantastic 111 point win over South Bendigo. Castlemaine 21-12 (138) to South Bendigo 4-3 (27). Goal kickers for the Magpies were Jed Denahy 5, Ben Moran 3, Lucas O'Brien 3, Hugh O’Connor 2, Matthew Schembri 2, Kyan Martin 2, Camblar Kays, Nathan Anderson, Brodie Browne-Kerr, Ethan Hein 1.

Best were Daniel Chaplin, Camblar Kays, Ashton Keogh, Brodie Browne-Kerr, Ben Moran and Angus Waller.

The Castlemaine netballers had also had a challenging day on the court going down to top class Bloods sides.

However, the young Castlemaine teams continue to build their skills and are expected to show improvement with each passing week under the guidance of new head coach Gabrielle Campbell.

Kyneton’s FIDA players went hard against Rupertswood, kicking a bag of goals and tackling hard. Club stalwart Hayden Walsh was a crowd favourite.

Thriller for Gisborne Hosting Strathfieldsaye on Saturday, Gisborne set the tone for the 2021 season with four out of five netball wins, putting their brand-new court and facilities to good use.

The new U17s showed great promise and depth, comfortably beating Storm 53-9.

Olivia Murray won best on court, using her speed and versatility to shine in both the midcourt and in the goaling circle.

At the same time, Gisborne B-graders showed tenacity and strength, holding on to a five-goal lead in the last quarter.

In B Reserve match, Storm proved to be too powerful, pulling ahead in the second quarter and building a steady lead to finish 50-38.50 Gisborne’s A Reserve side proved to be a powerhouse, cruising to a 45 to 26 win. Gisborne captain Rylee Connell led the charge, shooting 33 goals.

In A-grade, Gisborne made an explosive start, leading by a decisive 10 goals at quarter time.

In what proved to be quite a physical game, Tazma Morris was a strong and steady presence and helped propel the Bulldogs to a 55-35 victory.

FOOTY ROUND-UP It was also great to see football return to Gardiner Reserve.

The U18s were roaring and ready to go, with most boys playing their first game for the club as a result of the cancelled 2020 season.

Despite it being a close contest, the Bulldogs finished strongly for a 16-point win.

Best were C Flynn, D Lockens, J Fox, H Manders, C Freake and H Sloss. Goals - J Fox , M Merrett 2, J Normington, H Thomas, L Ellings, D McGrath and D Lockens.

Gisborne Reserves fielded possibly the youngest side in many years, with nine lads playing their first game of senior footy for the club.

The first quarter was spirited, with Gisborne finding it difficult for to get the ball forward.

The second term was much more even, with the ball rebounding constantly between the half-back lines. The visitors led by 18 points at half time.

The third quarter was very similar to the second with both defences well on top and goals scarce.

Gisborne’s defence held up pretty well all game and battled hard.

The boys battled the last quarter out managing to add another goal to their score, but the experienced and bigger bodied opposition produced late goals to pushing the final margin out to 55.

The way to go: Gisborne coach Rob Waters addresses his players at the quarter-time break, with injured Bulldog Bailey Revell assisting. Revell is expected to be sidelined for three weeks.

J Hickmott and L Weber kicked goals, and best players were M McDonald, M Steinbach, J McDonald, S Merrett, R Nicol and J Hickmott.

The main match began with both teams striving to take control and the ‘Dogs kicked the first couple of goals before Strath fought to tie the scores at 5.3 at the first change.

The arm wrestle continued, with neither getting on top. It was determined football, with both sides determined and converting opportunities.

In the third term Strath take control and headed into the last term up by a goal.

This was extended to a 15-point lead before the home side Dogs rallied to kick the last three goals, to eventually win an exciting game by one point.

WOMEN DOMINANT The women’s footy team rounded off the day with an evening match in very cold, wet and windy conditions.

Beginning their first season in the EDFL competition, players were unsure of what to expect but did not disappoint their supporters.

Firing early, the Bulldogs finished the quarter 20 points up, and this momentum continued, although Airport West put up a fight with some speedy players of their own.

Gisborne finished well for a 44-point victory – 7.4 to 0.2.

Best players were C Bourdon, A Crooks, B Kinghorn, S Brancatisano, K Mitchell and B Woodburn. Goals: C Noonan, N Dowdy, A Knight 2, B Woodburn.

Four blowouts, and one thriller Bill West

Football is back! Gisborne opened Bendigo League’s 2021 season with a thrilling one-point win over Strathfieldsaye on Saturday, but Castlemaine and Kyneton each went down by over 100 points to respective opponents South Bendigo and Golden Square.

In fact, the combined goals tally for four of the winners was 76, against just 20 for their opponents.

But the main thing was footy and netball was back after a 2020 season wipeout due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is to be hoped the sides on the losing side of the ledger can lift their performances as the season progresses.

Gisborne footballers and netballers (and a large number of supporters) were very happy with the performances of their sides at Gardiner Reserve.

With at least five regulars missing from the senior football lineup, including ace forward Pat McKenna, the Bulldogs showed plenty of resilience and spirit to keep unbeaten premiers Strathfieldsaye at bay in a match where scores were close throughout.

Gisborne managed to kick the last three goals, and hold off a series of attacks that resulted in points or out on the full shots for goal under pressure.

Non-playing coach Rob Waters, in his debut game in charge, had plenty to work with. Former Castlemaine player James O’Brien made an impressive debut.

Overall Gisborne won two of the three football matches, four of the five netball games, and rounded off the day with a 7.4 to 0.2 women’s football victory.

BFL board of management leader Carol McKinstry was present, and at the half-time break Gisborne president John Wood welcomed the gathering and thanked the shire council and all who had supported the club, and played a key role in having improved facilities installed at the ground in the last 12 months.

The netballers certainly welcomed the change from the ‘green shed’ to modern rooms!

AFL legend Paul Chapman made his coaching debut with the Tigers at Kyneton Showgrounds, but the visiting Golden Square combination showed no mercy with a 12-goal blitz in the third quarter.

Spearhead Luke Thrum was nearly unstoppable with nine goals.

Kyneton will welcome the opportunity to look for a win at Kangaroo Fat on Saturday.

Castlemaine defenders were under almost constant pressure at Camp Reserve after an even first term, with South Bendigo having 48 scoring shots.

This weekend the Magpies travel to Eaglehawk and face another tough test.

The really bright spot for Castlemaine was the runaway 111-point victory by the Under 18s over Golden Square. Certainly plenty of talented teenagers on the list.

One thing is clear, the Bendigo-based clubs are strong on the football field, and Gisborne looks to be the main challenger from those outside of the city.
