this announced as a specific project in the budget? Why has it taken nine years for the Morrison Government to recognise the worth of this project? And why have they only decided to make promises once they need to garner favour?" The sports precinct will deliver a 15-hectare regional park providing facilities for a range of sport and recreation activities to be delivered in two stages. Stage one includes a three-court sports hub, a natural turf oval and sports pavilion, passive recreation facilities, landscaping and associated infrastructure. Stage two would see three additional sports hub courts, a function room, additional car parking, a practise oval, outdoor multi-sport courts, additional sports pavilion amenities and further landscaping. Local police will be hitting the roads this week as part of a state-wide road policing operation over the April school holidays. Operation Compass will be conducted over the Easter long weekend, from Thursday April 14 to Monday April 18, and again over the ANZAC Day long weekend, from Friday April 22 to Monday April 25. Acting Sergeant of the Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol, Dwayne Sharam, said officers across the Macedon Ranges would be conducting highly visible road policing enforcement in order to reinforce positive driving behaviours and lessen the incidence of road trauma throughout the region. "The major focus of this operation will be on speed and impaired driving in addition to other common factors in road trauma such fatigue, distraction offences and seatbelt compliance," Sgt Sharam said. "Our officers will be supported throughout the operation by specialist resources from the State Highway Patrol, Heavy Vehicle Unit, Road Policing Drug and Alcohol Section and the Public Order Response Team. "This year Easter and Anzac Day long weekends also coincide with the April school holiday period meaning that a lot of people will take the opportunity to get away before winter sets in. "This has the potential to heighten the risk of road trauma due to an increase in traffic and people travelling longer distances into regional Victoria." Sgt Sharam said more than half of all lives lost on Victorian roads occurred in regional areas. "I would encourage all of those travelling on our roads to be patient, extra vigilant, slow down and give themselves more time to get to where they are going," he said. "Particularly those who are planning to get away as there is traditionally a influx of traffic during these periods and the roads will be extra busy. "We don't want to see a fatality on our roads these school holidays."

Stage two relies on $15M from the federal government and a further $5 million from the state government, as well as the council’s own contribution to proceed. Mayor Jennifer Anderson said the federal funding announcement was exciting news and would support a significant project for the region. “This new multi-facility sports precinct will allow residents to come together for a range of active and sporting needs – to interact, develop and build community cohesion," she said.

The facility would also be capable of hosting competitions on a regional level, which will provide benefits to local businesses and have a flow-on positive effect for tourism and employment across the shire. CEO Bernie O’Sullivan said growth was expected and current council-managed stadium facilities were already at, or nearing, capacity for competition purposes. “The new sports precinct is a big ticket item for our growing community and we have been advocating strongly alongside the community for the funding to see it through to completion," he said. MRSC will continue its advocacy efforts for an additional $5M from the Victorian Government required to complete stage two.

Workers assaulted at MYJC

The Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre was placed into rotating lockdown last Friday following the assault of two staff members by inmates on Thursday. The latest incident is the fourth assault on staff over the past fortnight, and resulted in serious head and facial injuries. WorkSafe and union officials met with staff on site on Friday and conducted a unit

by unit inspection. The union highlighted that reduced staffing levels was putting workers at risk. Union representatives are now working with the Department of Justice to ensure the centre operates with a full complement of staff. It is understood at least two inmates connected to the assaults have been transferred to the Parkville Youth Justice Centre.

Double-storeys approved VCAT has approved a Gisborne construction bid that Macedon Ranges Shire Council challenged for its overdevelopment. Five double-storey buildings, including one office, are planned for 1018sqms of commercially zoned land at 48 Brantome Street. While council planning officers recommended approval, councillors voted 5-4 to refuse the application, had they the chance, against officer recommendation back in October. The council submitted the application went against neighbourhood character, was visually dominant and would result in amenity loss. At the time, the application attracted two objections relating to design response and amenity impact to adjoining lots.

The application was subject to VCAT appeal against the council's failure to determine the matter within the statutory timeframe. VCAT found that "the site's location is conductive to urban intensification as it is within the Gisborne town centre, which is identified as a major centre where growth is sought to be focused". The member also noted the mixed use supported the council's policy aspirations. They were "satisfied the proposed buildings would respect the established rhythm of development". VCAT found the development would "enhance the established semi-rural and village character of the town centre" and "presents no signs of what is commonly termed 'overdevelopment'".

Mount Alexander Shire Council is trialing some changes to parking arrangements in Castlemaine’s central Mostyn Street, near the pedestrian zebra crossing, in an effort to help improve safety.

Drivers in Castlemaine's CBD may notice some parking changes in Mostyn Street. In an effort to improve safety and accessibility for motorists and pedestrians, Mount Alexander Shire Council is making temporary changes to two parking bays. Starting this month, the council is undertaking a six-month trial that will see two parking bays adjacent to the Mostyn Street zebra crossing shortened at one end by 600mm to 4.9m. These temporary modifications will increase the line of sight for pedestrians who are using the zebra crossing and also motorists travelling along Mostyn Street. The two parking bays closest to the crossing will be made available for small cars only, and will be clearly marked with signage. Council’s director of infrastructure and development, Michael Annear, said the temporary changes were being made in response to feedback from shire residents. “Community members are concerned that visibility for both motorists and pedestrians at this busy pedestrian crossing is poor, and we’re taking action on that feedback," he said. As part of the trial, the council will be installing signs next to the two affected parking bays notifying people about the temporary arrangements. “We are working in consultation with local business owners on the temporary trial, which will be under way from April until October this year,” Mr Annear said. “Community feedback on the trial is critically important, and we’ll be asking for the community and businesses to share their views on the trial via our online engagement platform during the trial.” Other new safety measures being undertaken at the Mostyn Street zebra crossing include the installation of tactile ground indicators, which are designed to provide directional guidance to vision-impaired people.

Plea to clear paths

Being able to walk safely down the street is something many people take for granted. But for someone who is vision-impaired, or totally blind like Kate Stephens, the experience can be hazardous if others don't play their part in clearing obstacles. Kate was born with a genetic condition described as a type of retinal dystrophy that caused her to lose all sight by her mid-20s. She has lived in Kyneton for about 28 years with her husband Geoff and their daughter Mel who are also visually impaired. For the past three weeks, Kate has been building a bond with her new guide dog Remeny with the help of Guide Dogs Australia. Remeny is the fifth of Kate's guide dogs to live in the Ranges. Guide Dogs regional team leader for Bendigo, Justin Marshall, has been shadowing the pair as they practise regular routes and get more familiar. Remeny will play a key role in helping Kate to navigate obstacles and alert her to potential dangers. But Kate and Justin said there were simple ways people in the community could help too. "People have got some really beautiful gardens but unfortunately they tend to come out onto the footpath and sometimes there are overhanging tree branches," Kate said. "It can be hard to create a consistency with the dog about going around things. There might be an even bigger obstacle that she's trying to avoid so it's really difficult to know if correcting her is the right thing to do. "Keeping that trimmed back not only helps me, it helps people in wheelchairs, people on scooters, parents with prams... it helps a lot of people." Kate is also advocating to the Macedon Ranges Council for various improvements to sloping and uneven footpaths, tactile tiles on route to the Kyneton train station, and trip hazards. Justin said, while guide dogs would go out of their way to navigate most of the obstacles, barriers added unnecessary pressure. "If the guide dog has a lot to contend with, and there is every second house with an overhanging branch, it just adds more stress to the dog and to the client," he said. "They do the best they can but keeping it clear is a way people can help." Kate encourages people to talk to her if they see her out and about. And she doesn't shy away from any conversations about her cane or guide dog if it means helping people to better understand. She said interactions are also made easier is if people introduce themselves by name and context so she can better place them.

New team Kate and Remeny have been walking the town. Justin said people should also seek permission to pat or interact with a working guide dog. The general rule is: if their harness is on it means all hands should be off. "If the client is feeling safe and is the right frame of mind they can remove the dog's harness so the dog understands they can break from working and be social," Justin said. He also warned that dogs off-leash and approaching a working guide dog can be distracting, putting the client at risk. Keeping dogs on a shorter leash around working dogs is ideal. "The dog is an aid and they do an amazing job but they will make mistakes if the opportunity is there," he said.

Kate also works at Monash University as a project assistant working on making visual material more accessible to blind and vision-impaired people. One of her most recent projects has involved work on the current Elvis exhibition at Bendigo.

The East Paddock covers an area of approximately 56 acres (22.7 hectares) and sits adjacent to the Hanging Rock Reserve. The land was formerly used for livestock grazing until it was bought by the former Shire of Newham and Woodend in 1990.

Mount Alexander Shire Council has developed two new plans to help guide the future protection and management of the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens. The council's coordinator of parks and gardens, Stewart Campbell, said the two new plans would help ensure the future protection of the significant local attraction into the future. “The Castlemaine Botanical Gardens is one of the shire’s most-loved and important public spaces, and is one of Victoria’s oldest regional botanical gardens,” Mr Campbell said. “Protecting and managing this space will ensure that the gardens can be enjoyed by the community well into the future.” The plans aim to ensure the long-term future of the gardens as a site of botanical, ecological and historical significance, and to broaden the current role of the gardens to include an educational and scientific function, as well as a place for recreation. The first plan, titled the Living Collections Plan, focuses on initiatives such as establishing appropriate plant collections within the gardens including planning for climate change and its impacts on flora in the gardens. The second plan is titled Tree Succession Plan and focuses on initiatives including regular tree surveys and preparing specific maintenance guidelines for significant trees as well as developing a best-practice approach to tree maintenance. The development of these plans was made possible through the state government’s Growing Victoria’s Botanic Gardens round one 2019 program. A popular pastime in Japan has developed into a professional practice for expat artist Chieko Hester. As a child, Chieko was taught by her father to fold origami cranes and she practised with friends at school. "Origami itself back then was just that, it wasn't something that you learnt properly, you just learn as you go," she explains. Immigrating to Australia at the age of 23, Chieko met her husband in Sydney and they later settled in Gisborne, where her husband had grown up. "Until then I had never really done much origami, sometimes if there was origami paper I might have folded something, but I'd never really done much," she says. "Then my neighbour was doing card making and said 'come along, we can do a few things together' and as I was always a creative person I loved it! "All the other ladies were making beautiful creative cards and I thought 'I can't be as good as them', but then I thought, I can actually fold origami. "I started putting my first origami shapes onto the cards and that was the start of my current journey." From 2012, with two young children and no longer working full-time, Chieko began honing her skills. She branched out from card making and began also producing 3D framed artworks in a variety of sizes, from the tiny and intricate to large wall art, and even earrings and pendants. On her last trip to Japan in 2019, just before before the pandemic hit, she sourced a good supply of beautiful Japanese origami paper.

The annual 'Campbells Creek Pottery and Australiana Exhibition and Sale' is returning this Easter Saturday. Now in its fourth year, the pottery extravaganza will feature pieces from all over Victoria and beyond, including colonial and retro pottery as well as quirky Australiana collectables to pique the interest of the most avid collector. The event is coordinated by central Victorian antique dealer and pottery aficionado, Brian Owens, and his mate Ed Kisala from Healesville. "We will have 15 stallholders in attendance from across the state with a wide range of unique, rare and collectable pieces," Brian said. Among the items that Brian will be bringing along is a 1975 painting of Castlemaine's historic Market Building by Robert Blackwood. He will also be displaying a magnificent green vase from the renowned John Campbell Pottery in Tasmania, and a unique walking cane with a local connection. "I picked it up at an auction in Melbourne. The inscription on the snakewood cane says it was presented to Sub-

It's a very special piece with a fascinating local history. It really belongs in a museum." Entry is by gold coin donation and funds raised will go towards the Campbells Creek Football Netball Club, which has just returned to the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League after a year's recess. "We are delighted to support the local club. The Creek Magpies will also be doing the catering with food and refreshments available for purchase throughout the day," Brian said.

In return, NBN Co has committed to install a fibre connection at no charge all the way to premises where an order for a 100 megabit per second service is placed with a retail service provider. Victorians can find out whether they are eligible for an FTTP connection and register their interest on the NBN website. Channel Nine’s famous reality renovation show, The Block, is returning for Season 18, and will break ground in the Macedon Ranges in early April 2022. The Block will film for 12 weeks in the area and will see contestants in a competition to transform five family homes which will then be sold via a public auction. The region’s vulnerable platypus population will be given a boost with a freshening flow down the Coliban River in mid-April. Before the millennium drought, platypus foraging around the banks of the Coliban River downstream of Malmsbury Reservoir was a common sight. However, climate change and challenging flow patterns have had an impact on them, and dams at either end isolate that section of the river preventing regular natural flows. The lower Coliban River is one of the few regulated rivers in Victoria that does not have any water entitlements. It flows between Malmsbury and Eppalock reservoirs, and there are no irrigation customers and no water for the environment entitlements. However, passing flows, of up to 8ML/day, are managed for the health of the river. Passing flows can be partially accumulated for future use. The accumulated passing flows are then released at the right time to have the bestpossible environmental impact for the river and the plants and animals that rely on it to survive. North Central Catchment Management Authority Water for the Environment project manager, Darren White, said up to 260 megalitres of water would flow down the Coliban from mid to late April. “The main target of this fresh flow is juvenile platypus. We know in at least one part of the river, directly below the Malmsbury Reservoir, there is a strong breeding population of platypus,” he said. “This is the time of year when the juveniles start leaving home and we need to make sure there is enough water in the river to help them roam up and downstream. “This flow will reconnect any pools and help make it easier for them to find food and explore new areas. And it will provide protection for them from predators. “As we see low numbers across the state, this platypus population is one that really needs to be protected.” The flow will also help other plants and animals in the river. “It will also improve the health of the vegetation on the riverbank and scrape any slime off surfaces,” Mr White said. “When the slime regrows, it’s brilliant food for waterbugs, which are key parts of the diet of platypus.”

The annual scone bake-off happens this Thursday evening when, according to local folkloric legend, the lighting of the Maldon tower awakens Easter Bunny who then hops into action delivering vital supplies of Easter eggs to all who are hoping for them. The Great Aussie Scone Bake competition has been running for many years and attracts some strong competition with different categories for adults, juniors and commercial scone-makers. Among those preparing to compete is Castlemaine's Renee Thompson who knows a thing or two when it comes to turning out a satisfying scone. "It's taking place in the back courtyard of the Maldon hotel from 7pm and you can just rock up," says Renee who is also on the fair organising committee. "Most of the local cafes and also the pubs do get quite competitive and you could have

anything from ten to twenty different competitors," the seasoned scone baker and CWA member says. "Maree Edwards (State Member for Bendigo West) is one of the judges on the panel of judges. "Last time I entered my kids stole my recipe and won, and I was forced to use a different recipe – and lost." But this time round Renee's kids are not competing and Renee says she'll be joining forces with her little grandson to once again complete using her own tried and tested recipe. "We'll have a go," she says. And she's got a few tips for turning out a great scone. "One thing I know about making scones is you don't muck around with it," she says. "And everyone is different. Some like their scones light and fluffy and like to use lemonade in the mix, and others prefer a bit of a heavier scone and use cream. "And you need a hot oven...." The event makes for a great spectator occasion as well – "and the best part of it is that people get to taste the results," Renee adds.

Deep shafts were located just metres from their fence line, and at times, even the streets were mined. Then on Sunday April 24, the story of the remarkable Leviny family and their relationship with the Arts and Crafts movement and Buda's Australian Arts collection is brought to life exploring the collection with Christine Lloyd. A must for Australian art fans. Finish off the festival on Friday April 29 at a fabulous 1950s soiree with an exclusive viewing of the Bustles and Bows '50s costume collection and a '40s and '50s fancy dress champagne supper with fabulous music by the Peter Baylor duo. Then in May, Buda will hosts its annual Mother’s day High Tea, this year featuring special speaker Christine Nixon. Castlemaine Vet Clinic will again provide after-hours service from Thursday evening through to Monday morning. “Even though we strive to work tirelessly for the wellbeing of all companion animals in the area while the clinic is open, the demand for after hours has become too great and I feel we need to be there for the community as best we can, especially when a loved pet gets themselves into a tricky situation," Dr Yvette Berkeley from Castlemaine Vets says. Despite the critical veterinary shortages being experienced in regional and rural Australia and the significant challenges facing the vet industry, Castlemaine Vets' after-hours service will be reinstated for genuine emergencies only. Dr Berkeley explains that in order to take care of her staff, who are a passionate and dedicated team often working exceptionally long hours, 24/7 care is simply not possible. "However, we will provide after-hours care from Thursday evening through to Monday mornings and the vet on call will be available from 8am up until 9pm, "she says. "If there is an emergency outside of these times Central Victorian Emergency in Bendigo will be available on the weekends." Dr Berkeley appreciates this may not be an ideal solution, but at this stage it is one she feels her team can sustain for the community.

We know that chocolate is delicious. It is around everywhere at this time of the year. Whether it be milk chocolate, dark chocolate, chocolate covered nuts, chocolate covered honeycomb ... it tastes wonderful to us. Chocolate contains a product called theobromine, which is fine for human consumption, but when it comes to our pets, this product is not something suitable. Theobromine can affect the central nervous system, cardiovascular system and respiratory system in animals so it is important to keep the chocolate out of reach of dogs and cats. Other risks that appear during the Easter period include some sugar-free chocolates and sweets that contain an additional artificial sweetener called xylitol, which can also cause toxic effects in dogs, and hot cross buns can also pose a risk with

the contents of sultanas and raisins causing significant damage to kidneys. Clinical signs seen in an animal who has ingested chocolate can vary on the amount and type of chocolate, but can begin with gastrointestinal upsets, vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive urination and increased thirst. From there, symptoms can progress to hyperactivity, increased heart rate, hyperthermia, pancreatitis, depression, heart arrhythmias and heart failure, tremors, seizures and coma. These are more than enough reasons to ensure your chocolate stays out of reach of pets. My dog found herself at the bottom of 20m mineshaft on Saturday April 2. With assistance from the Harcourt CFA we were put in touch with the Oscar 1 mine rescue team who are all volunteers and the only volunteer mine rescue group in Australia, I believe. They were with us in no time; were calm, kind and completely confident and competent at setting up their rig in a steep and difficult to access spot. One of the team was winched down with a dog harness and once the dog was strapped in they were both winched back up to the top. She is an anxious dog and he had her completely at ease in a stressful and scary situation. Incredibly the dog was absolutely fine albeit a bit sore and probably bruised. The team were amazing and I want to give them a shout out to spread awareness of their service.

Once again, the Liberal Party is playing politics with our local sporting clubs, with little regard for the facts ('Cricket club gains support', Midland Express, April 5). The draft Master Plan for Hanging Rock has been developed in partnership with council, Dja Dja Wurrung, Wurundjeri and Taungurung Traditional Owners. The plan reflects the long-held concerns of many in our community to protect and enhance the environmental features and the visual landscapes of the precinct while ensuring locals and visitors alike can better enjoy passive recreational activities including walking and picnicking, and a contemporary education experience, including for the 9000 students who call the Macedon Ranges home. The plan explicitly states that built assets should be minimised and must not visually dominate the setting. While visitors are to be managed so as not to create congestion around the Rock. This is the opposite of a ‘development opportunity’. We can be proud that for the first time we have a plan for Hanging Rock and its surrounds that incorporates the heritage and the living cultural values of Traditional Owners, a fact that has been ignored by the Liberal Party. Fundamental to the vision for Hanging Rock is the comprehensive environmental rehabilitation of wetlands and waterways, including the Smokers Creek corridor. The plan recommends sporting clubs relocate in order to support their ongoing development and expansion, and this is proposed to occur over a five-year period. I will continue to work with the cricket club and council to make sure our community has the sports facilities they need while we get on with protecting Hanging Rock’s unique environmental, ecological and cultural attributes. We can and we will do both.

Don't sell the East Paddock Christine Pruneau, secretary, Macedon Ranges Residents Association Residents are being asked if they think Macedon Ranges Council should sell Hanging Rock’s East Paddock, currently council-owned, to the state government (check council’s website). The Shire of Newham and Woodend bought the Paddock as a protective buffer for Hanging Rock. The state government wants to buy it but there has been disagreement about offers and valuations. This Association has historically taken a strong interest in Hanging Rock issues, including the 2012 council’s moronic but

unsuccessful attempt to privatise and commercialise the East Paddock. After much thought, the Association has concluded the East Paddock should not be sold, mainly because: 1. Currently the East Paddock is 'council-owned', meaning it's owned by the Macedon Ranges’ community. It wouldn’t be, if sold. 2. During a previous council’s attempt to privatise and commercialise the East Paddock, the Macedon Ranges community turned for help to the broader public and the then state government to stop those plans. Those options would narrow with state-government ownership. 3. The state government’s recent draft Hanging Rock Precinct Master Plan did not tell us what its plans are for the East Paddock other than in fairly vague and broad terms and lacked maximum numbers for visitations or events, so failed to fully identify intentions in terms of tourism and events uses. It lacked detail – large areas of land (including the racecourse and concert area) were ambiguously slated for ‘events’ or shown within unexplained dotted lines. The significant ‘gaps’ in the state government’s Master Plan provide no guarantee that the East Paddock won’t be commercialised, which would be much harder to stop if the Paddock was state-owned. Overall, the gut feeling is the state government just hasn’t been transparent enough to give sufficient confidence that its ownership of the East Paddock would be a better outcome than council’s ownership.

Transfer the East Paddock Matthew Nickson, Hanging Rock Action Group After a long delay, Macedon Ranges Shire Council will decide next month whether to accept the Victorian Government’s offer to buy the East Paddock next to the Hanging Rock Reserve. While the Hanging Rock Reserve is owned by the Victorian Government, the East Paddock is owned by the Macedon Ranges Shire Council. That’s the land where the concerts are held. Council acts as the manager for both sections. Right now, the council wants to know the community’s view. From the earliest days of the reserve’s creation, the local council has managed the reserve on behalf of the Victorian Government. When in 1990 the Newham and Woodend Shire Council took the farsighted decision to purchase the East Paddock, it realised the ever-increasing visitor numbers to the reserve meant more space was needed. An increase in the entrance fees to the reserve covered the cost of repaying the loan to buy the land. No ratepayer funds were used. The council intended to transfer the land to the state once the loan was paid off. When the Macedon Ranges Shire Council was created in 1995, corporate memory was lost, and the transfer didn’t happen. Instead, we got the council’s 2013 proposal for conference facilities, accommodation and a well being centre in the East Paddock. After more than 6000 people voiced their opposition, the council abandoned that idea. Now it’s time to tell the council to transfer the East Paddock to the state, as was originally intended. The transfer would only be positive for the community, with no downside: - Council will continue to manage the entire reserve. - Council will still receive the financial return from the concerts. - The state and the council have agreed on a valuation. - The council can spend the funds it gets on improving local public open space or on buying new land for public open space as required by local government regulations. Just as both sections have only one

manager, it makes sense to only have one landowner for both sections. Please ask the council to transfer the land.

Parking solution Lana Osterfield, Castlemaine It has been brought to my attention that the crossing at Mostyn Street in Castlemaine is causing problems for many. I myself have had close calls and am always cautious when crossing. The suggestion (original) was to remove the two closest car parks that create the problem by the size of and type of vehicle favoured by drivers today. The council solution I believe is to shorten the bays and make them available for small cars only. I believe this only goes part way to solving the problem. My solution kills three birds with one stone so to speak. 1. Shorten the bays or they could be left as they are with a time limit on them of half an hour to one hour (as I believe it is older people who need those spaces and they can then go to the bank or the chemist on a quick errand). The parking behind the chemist and Bendigo bank (now the Village Square) was popular for this purpose and has been removed. 2. Move the pedestrian crossing to the other side of the garden bed divider. The garden bed will allow vision of oncoming traffic. The space left should be enough of a turning circle for delivery vehicles and the taxis. 3. Use the space of the old crossing area as a place for motorbike parking, as at the moment I know of no space for them and they park on the footpath outside the Market Building. Please consider these suggestions, I believe it necessary to put out a council survey. To make sure the community is informed and has a say in our safety. Removing the bays is not an option, as I know drivers are screaming there is not enough parking now. I am 72 years old and can see that this is an issue, please address it with due consideration. If you have any other suggestions I suggest you email the council on their 'Shaping Castlemaine' site.

Nordic pole walking expands

choose to continue. Limited spaces are available in all the groups, which are intentionally kept small to maximise participant safety. There is no cost for the groups, which start after Anzac Day. Castlemaine botanical gardens groups walk at 9.30am on Mondays and 2pm and 6.30pm on Tuesdays. The Harcourt group walks from 9.30am on Wednesdays and the Newstead group steps out at 9.30am on Thursdays. An evening group at 4.30pm on Wednesday also meets at Maldon Train Station. The nordic pole walking program is a Castlemaine Health program and was developed in partnership with Castlemaine Community House.

Friendly local nordic pole walking instructors in the Castlemaine Botanical Gardens.

Local nordic pole walking classes have really hit their stride, proving so popular they're now being offered in Castlemaine, Harcourt, Newstead and Maldon. Volunteers have recently had their qualifications updated by the Nordic Academy and as a result are enthusiastic to offer this opportunity in more locations across Mount Alexander Shire. Healthy Heart of Victoria funding provided this opportunity to volunteers. These instructors lead the groups and teach participants nordic pole walking skills over a school term, which is about 10 weeks. Nordic poles are available for use in classes for the duration of the course, and volunteers can assist participants to purchase their own discounted poles if they

Last weekend saw croquet players from the region vie for the honour of representing the Northern District Croquet Association in the Victorian Regional Championships. Three players took to the lawns in Kyneton in Division 1 with Quarry Hill's Jennifer Slattery coming out on top over Rick Janssen of Kyneton. In Division 2, played at Quarry Hill, their own Irene Murdoch beat three other players with Kyneton's Damian Hadfield second. The main action was in Division 3 with 10 players completing a gruelling schedule over two days at Quarry Hill. In the end, three players finished joint leaders having all lost one game. Hoop differential was needed to decide the winner with Kyneton's Pat Fahy on top with 32 hoops, followed by Elizabeth Payne from Gisborne on 23 and Graham Smith of Kyneton on 17. The winner of each division will now play in the state championships on 23/24 April at Cairnlea. Also last week the Kyneton Croquet Club made their presentation of the John Teed Cup to Damien Hadfield for successfully defending his title as Club singles champion. Hadfield was dominant this year going through the season undefeated.

Tight contest finals finish

The Kyneton and District Tennis Association Midweek summer tennis grand final saw strong competition for Ajla 29 def Arina 25. Ajla got off to an early lead with Arina clawing back to make a close contest. In the winning team were Paula Sievers, Mary Beattie, Jenny Lander, and filling in at the last moment was Julie Edmonston. Prizes were also given to the player who had won the most sets: Viv Lambarne, and the most games: Sharon Macaulay. The winter midweek season will begin on Tuesday May 3. GOLF results Kyneton Golf Club’s belated 2021 men’s championships concluded on Saturday. Club captain Hodgkiss won 7&6 against Jason McClure in the final scheduled over 36 holes; Tien Ho defeated Jonathan Beachey by the same margin in B-grade, and David Ryan edged out Paul Law on the 20th hole. Saturday stableford: Peter Walsh (16) 38 points, from Col Cooney (23) 37. Ladies: Julie Harris (19 with 32 points, from Robyn MacRae (22). Hodgkiss was NTP on the 17th and super pin winner, with Harris, McClure, Walsh and Damian Summers the other NTPs. Michelle Werner is in rare form, and took out the women’s April medal and Agrade prize last Tuesday with a fine 90-2466, from Robyn MacRae 92-22-70. Marian Orr 103-32-71 topped B-grade from Bron Dwyer 100-27-73. Plenty of good scores in Wednesday’s stableford, with Gordon Stevens (21) the best with 41, from Paul Moore 38. Michelle Werner (again) led in the ladies with 42 point from MacRae 38. Castlemaine Mark Brackley returned the best score of 42 stableford points when 50 players competed at Castlemaine on Saturday. A-grade: Len Watson (11 handicap) 38, from Jason Thompson (9) 37; B – Mark Brackley (14) 42, from Geoff Deppeler (15)

Mount Macedon The weather gods were kind last Wednesday as a smaller than usual field gathered at the Mount course. It was the midweek gentlemen’s New Gisborne Dental House Mug o’ the Month stableford event. A-grade was 0-18 handicap, and Marcus Ward with 41 points was the clear winner, from Rob Devereux (17) on 37, while B-grade went to Karl Pongracic (26) with 37, from Bubba Watson (23) with 33. All are hoping Tiger Penney, Mike Gorman and Aitch make a speedy recovery from injury. Saturday’s par event: A - Peter Sinclair (7) +2; B – Ryan Toholka (13) +3; C – Peter Watson (23) -1.

Romsey Perfect sunny conditions and a picturesque course greeted players in the annual Romsey Challenge Bowl on Thursday. Team Goonawarra dominated with 110 points, nine clear of a Lancefield combination. Shinobu Littman (17) had the best individual score of the day with 40 points, with Wendy Krapywndyi 37 and Pam Murphy 33 making a strong lineup. Grade winners: A – Adrienne Anglin (Yea) 37 on countback from Lisa Caines (Seymour); B – Kaye Atlas (Gisborne) 37. C-- Anne Robinson 37 on countback from Anne Stevens (both Lancefield). NTPs went to Pam Murphy (2) and Wendy Nichols. Saturday stroke: Mal Mottram 81-6-75 (and NTP) from Scott Williams 89-13-76 on a challenging afternoon. Semi-finals of the Algie Mitchell Shield were decided, three of the four quarterfinals going down to the last hole. Scott Williams will play Mick Squire, and Mick Nicholls Jnr tackles John Freestone. Kilmore visitors joined in the nine-hole stableford with the locals on Wednesday. Chris Manktelow (33) had 22 points, Shirley Shelton (23) 19, and Hugh Williams (19) 18. DDGA pennant is under way, with Romsey’s scratch 2 side going down 4/1 against Broadford at Whittlesea. Romsey hosted handicap 4, with Woodend defeating Hidden Valley 4-1, and Kilmore eclipsing Lancefield5-0.

Trentham David Nugent, treasurer of Trentham GC for the past 18 years, has been declared a life member. He has served in various roles since joining TGC in 1995, and a special meeting on April 2 unanimously decreed he receive this honour. Kirsten Jensen and Alan Snowden carded 76-8.25-67.25 to finish well clear of the other 12 pairs in the second round of the mixed championship on Saturday. Men’s stableford: B-grade winner Bradley Nugent (14) had the best round of the day with 43 points. The A-grade winner was Kent Newton (12) with 38, and Alfredo Dean took out C-grade with 35. Woodend Autumn is a peak time for golf at Woodend, with the course in great condition. At the end of March there were more than 210 members, and it is hoped they soon renew for the next 12 months; newcomers can join up on the special $250 for 12 months deal. The club is appreciative of Greater Western Water’s generosity and support. The water body will replace the four pumps that draw recycled water from Lake Earnshaw to irrigate the course. The cost is around $65,000, with the club to contribute $15,000. Saturday’s stableford event winner was Chris Holiday (13) with 40 stableford points, from Mark Hutchison (8) with 39.

Castlemaine Cycling Club's Jade Maddern won two bronze medals last week representing Victoria at the 2022 Australian National Track Championships at the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane. Jade and Vic teammates Sam Gallagher and Ned Pollard started fast in the Elite Men's Team Sprint, with Jade finishing it

State team sprint at the DISC Velodrome in Melbourne. Castlemaine Cycling Club coach Ken Maddern said this was a great result considering two riders are Under 19 and the third is a Master. "To come away with a result like this against the Elite Riders was fantastic," Maddern said.

Triple bronze success off to take the bronze medal in a time of 44.967. Jade also rode in the Sprint rounds on Saturday March 26 qualifying in a time of 10.38 which was a personal best and raced his sprint rounds with great results. Jade concluded his national campaign racing in the 1km Time Trial on Wednes-

day and was thrilled to also take out an individual national bronze for his efforts. Athletics season celebrated

Kyneton Little Athletics has been awarded Northern Country Region Best Large Centre and celebrated a successful 2021/22 season with a presentation night on March 26. The centre boasts 177 members and has lodged some impressive statistics with 1607 personal bests, and two centre records (Angus Hoyne and Eliza Coutts). Kyneton had 13 representatives at the Albury Northern Country Region Carnival and 10 representatives at the State Championships. Members Eliza Coutts and Hailey Stubbs had successfully competed at Senior State and National

Athletics Championships. The centre's major winners for the season were: Senior Champions – Angus Hoyne and Hailey Stubbs, Junior Champions – Corey Plowman and Hayley White, and Sports Achiever of the Year – Maino Kome. The season had its challenges with a late start due to Covid. Under the circumstances the centre had a successful year with membership being the largest it’s been. Many new families were also welcomed and other returned from some time away. Next season starts early October and we look forward to seeing lots of new faces.

Macedon Rangers Soccer Club star Madison Migga has been selected for Football Victoria’s Skill Acquisition Phase Program. Football Victoria launched their SAP centres for specially selected U9-12 players in 2020 to identify and develop promising young talent. Rangers' coaches nominated players from their teams and for the second year in a row had a player selected for this program. Madi came up through the mini rangers program and is member of the Under 11s Girls team and has worked hard for the opportunity. Not only has she made the club proud, coach Matt Bender said he was absolutely delighted. “The improvement with Madi over the past 12 months has been great to see,” he said. With the support of mum Rachel and dad Brad, Madi has grabbed this opportunity with both hands and is looking forward to the commencement of the program. The centres will be operating out of Darebin International Sports Centre and Knox Regional Football Centre. Players train one night a week with their allocated squad in their area, with all players required to train and play matches with their current club.

Hailey wins silver

Kyneton teen Hailey Stubbs has come away with a silver medal and seventh placing at the Athletics Australia National Championships in Sydney. Representing Victoria, the 13-year-old Sacred Heart College student was thrilled to win the silver in the Under 15 Girls Hammer Throw and a seventh in the Under 17 Girls Hammer Throw - an incredible effort in her first year at the national competition. In the Under 15 event, on March 27, Hailey held second place from her first throw and dropped back to third during the final round. She then had her fourth and final throw and reclaimed second place with a new personal best of 44.26 metres an improvement of a staggering 5.25 metres on her previous best! The Kyneton Little Athletics Club and Bendigo Harriers Athletics Club member travelled back to Sydney on March 31 so she could compete in the Under 17 Hammer event. Hailey said that she went into the Under 17 Hammer competition with the intention of making into the top eight and was thrilled to finish in seventh place. "I achieved my goal and I am extremely proud. I would like to thank my family and my coach Leanne Hume for all their support in getting me to this point. It is amazing," Hailey said. The achievement is impressive considering the young athlete has only been competing in the hammer throw for less than 12 months, having previous competed in shot put and discus. She was delighted to also be recognised at the recent Bendigo Athletics awards evening picking up a number of accolades including the Under 14 Women's Champion honours in the discus, shot put and hammer; record certificates for record throw achievements at Bendigo and Homebush, an award for being a Bendigo Athletics Region Rising Star Award Nominee, and the prestigious Anne Flack Memorial Junior Female Award. Congratulations Hailey on an amazing season.

To celebrate its 2022 season launch Castlemaine District Netball Association is hosting a free NetFit clinic for association members tomorrow evening. The session is just $10 for non-members and will run from 6pm to 7pm at the Wesley Hill Netball Complex in McGrath Street. The CDNA's season will begin the following Wednesday April 20. Team entries close shortly so to be quick to register your interest and get involved in the winter competition today. CDNA's Tegan Maddern said the NetFit session is a great opportunity to have fun while learning important netball skills. "NetFit was created by talented former Vixens and Swifts player Sarah Wall. The seven-year-old mare ridden by Patrick Moloney started second favourite in the 0-58 Handicap over 1400m, and finished strongly to score by nearly a length from Kilmore-trained outsider Overcharged. My Divas, affectionately known as ‘Scully’ around George Osborne’s stables,

took her stake earnings to $213,980 from 49 career starts Pocket Change Early last week Tylden galloper Pocket Change chalked up his second win from sixth starts, taking out a BM64 event over 1400m at Ballarat. Trained by John Salanitri at Hirsch Park, the three-year-old was ridden on the pace by in-form apprentice Alana Kelly, and won by one and a half lengths.

Campbells Creek makes its return!

The Campbells Creek Football Netball Club has made its return to the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League (MCDFNL) after a year's recess. The side celebrating with the season opening match against the Avoca Bulldogs (Round 2 on the fixture) at its home ground at the Campbells Creek Recreation Reserve last Saturday. Club Secretary Marg Stevens said it was a massive day. "It was so good to be back at the Creek. It was a big crowd and we sold out of everything!" she said. "Huge thanks to the Avoca Football Netball Club for throwing their support behind us as part of the season opener and thank you to our wonderful Creekers, for everything they have done behind the scenes to make the return a success. Castlemaine Football Netball Club played host to long time rivals Kyneton Football Netball Club on Saturday at the Camp Reserve as part of the annual Des Kelly Memorial 'Challenge Cup' proudly supported by Elliott Midland Newspapers. The competition marked the opening round of the 2022 Bendigo Football Netball League season. It was a historic day for the Castlemaine club with its all new AFL Central Vic Women's squad making their debut against the Tigers in round two of the 2022 competition after drawing the bye in round one. While the Magpies Seniors and Reserves football sides found the going tough against their in-form Tigers opponents and went down by big margins, the Castlemaine Women's side won their contest

against the Tigers to make a positive start to their inaugural 2022 campaign. Best on Ground for the Seniors was Bailey Henderson, for the Reserves Jackson Byrne and for the Women's side Michelle Barkla. The Magpie Under 18s also secured a fantastic 18 point win over Kyneton in a low scoring affair. The Best on Ground medal was awarded to Ethan Maltby. On the court Castlemaine's A Grade side also had a great win in their opening round bout against Kyneton 48 to 27. Best on Court went to Jane O'Donaghue. The Magpie A Reserves squad also had a 17 goal victory 47-30. Best on Court was Abby Grindal. The B Grade sides had a close battle with the Magpies 36 getting over the Tigers 24. Castlemaine's 17 and Under side saw the Magpie women make a clean sweep of the netball contests winning 46-31. Megan Wilson picking up the Challenge Cup honours for Best on Court. With seven wins to two Castlemaine was thrilled to reclaim the Challenge Cup from Kyneton. The two clubs followed the epic day's play with a social evening at the clubrooms with live entertainment by Deus Sax. Castlemaine president Caleb Kuhle said it was a fantastic way to open the season. "Well done to all players and volunteers and thanks to the sporting communities who came down to cheer on their respective teams!" he said.

FIDA players wanted

The Kyneton Football Netball Club established its FIDA side last year and is now putting the call out for interested players. FIDA provides Victorians with an intellectual impairment the opportunity to participate in Australian Rules Football. Past and new players are encouraged to sign up the 2022 to play for the Tigers. Round one kicks off on Sunday April 10 at home ground Kyneton. There were one-sided matches in the Riddell League’s A-grade second round on Saturday. Woodend-Hesket 45 defeated Wallan 25 with coach Megan Grbac, Tayissa Coppinger and Laura Carland all in good form. Other scores were Macedon 56 d Lancefield 22, Riddell 63 d Romsey 18, and Diggers Rest 58 d Melton Centrals 37. It’s a draw! Plus two tight games tense last term, with the Magpies gradually whittling down the lead. In the end scores were tied at 10.6 (66) apiece, leaving both sides with plenty to reflect on. Adaptable big men Marcus Stapleton and Tom Gawthrop were listed as the Hawks’ best, and it’s apparent playing coach Josh Pound certainly has plenty of talent to work with this season. At Lancefield, the home side’s effort in outscoring the Cats after half time to go down by just five points was very commendable. The visitors were pleased to hang on after holding a handy half time advantage. The Tigers faded in the first half in the opening round, but not this time. Riddell and Romsey have a keen rivalry going back many years, and the Bombers would have been pleased to establish a 17 point half time lead. The Redbacks rallied in the third term, and the last quarter became a stalemate, with neither side able to score a major with the Bombers’ margin seven points. With close wins in the first two games, Riddell will be keyed up to make it three in a row on Good Friday. Trentham District Football Netball Club celebrates its 130th anniversary this year. The Saints are still welcoming new players at both senior and junior levels, and look forward to the opening game at Carisbrook on Saturday, April 23. Senior football coach Rick Dowling is pleased with the way the side is shaping up, with the same drive and determination that was shown in the COVID-interrupted 2021 season. He is particularly pleased with talented recruits in Darcy Matricardi (NT Thunder), Liam Bianco (Woodend-Hesket), Michael Shaw (North Heidelberg). “Trentham Saints netballers are keen to get into it,” senior coach Sharna Ford said. Some new players have joined the netball ranks. Sisters Tegan and Mia Finch are expected to add speed, agility and versatility to the senior side. Anyone who would like to help this community-orientated club this season will be made very welcome.

Spectators certainly got their money’s worth in second round Riddell District football matches on Saturday, highlighted by an astonishing draw at Gilbert Gordon Oval between Woodend-Hesket and Wallan. Lancefield heartened their coach Tom Waters and supporters with a strong second half with a desperate Macedon hanging on to win by less than a goal, and Romsey rebounded from a goal-less first round effort to push Riddell all the way. The stage is now set for the Good Friday match between Riddell and WoodendHesket, with a large crowd expected at Bomberland. It’s the only RDFNL fixture this coming weekend. No one could have predicted what occurred between Woodend-Hesket and Wallan, with the Hawks leaving their highly rated opponents shell shocked by racing to a 38 points lead by quarter time. The Hawks looked invincible, with plenty of avenues to goal, and the Magpies appeared rattled during one of the most dynamic first terms by the home side for a long time. But good sides bounce back, and the Magpies seized control with some positional moves in the second term to shut the Hawks down with a four goals to nil second term.
