Musician Geoff Collinson has created a music platform to bring work to musicians around the world.

A new music platform has brought work to hundreds of musicians globally who have suffered dramatic income losses due to COVID-19. The online platform, Aeyons, has connected world-class musicians with students of all ages across 17 countries for hundreds of real-time private tutorials since its launch in March. It's the creation of musician and former Drummond resident Geoff Collinson who says the platform has grown beyond his imagining - and there's a chance for Macedon Ranges and Mount Alexander locals to be part of its momentum. Collinson was on the verge of launching an online music teaching platform in China at the beginning of the year but said he had a "complete other opportunity to help musicians around the world when COVID struck". "We decided to make a change to help right now," he said. Throughout the pandemic, Collinson has seen dozens of talented musicians and friends lose everything as events and venues shut down overnight. "COVID has impacted the music sector in a devastating way," he said. "There have been no gigs since March and sadly being out of work has become a common story. We know there are musicians out there who need something like this." His business pivot has been exactly that for at least 170 musicians now connecting and sharing their talents across the globe, including 40 Australian professionals with room for more. Award-winning percussionist David Jones is one of those who came on board and described Aeyons as a "lifeline" during the Melbourne lockdown period. "Not only for my earning, which has certainly needed a helping hand, but it has also contributed to a sense of wellbeing and given opportunities to teach new and old students online," he said. The model foresees faculty numbers reaching 5000 by the end of year five with 1.4 million individual lessons expected annually by that time. "The response has been incredible. It just boomed! We have now partnered with global investors. The whole thing has kind of gone ballistic," Collinson said. Aeyons is partnering with musicians from the world's great orchestras such as Australian World Orchestra, LA PHIL, London Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Parking fines look imminent for residents of a Kyneton housing estate who say they have no other option than to park on their naturestrips. Parking officers last week resumed full patrols and the issuing of fines in Macedon Ranges following scaled back activity from April. The move comes as COVID-19 restrictions ease and visitors return to the area. Patrols have resumed as normal and targets include parking on naturestrips and advertising vehicles for sale on council land. Parking officers issued warnings for illegal naturestrip parking to Bluestone Rise residents back in June, in response to complaints in the Kyneton area. But residents say roads in Bluestone Rise are as narrow as six metres, preventing cars from safely park on both sides at once and allowing through-traffic. "When there are more than two driving adults living in the house, or people have additional work vehicles, it makes it hard for people to contain their vehicles within their properties," one resident told the Express. "There are constantly vehicles parked on naturestrips here because it is the next best thing to having two cars parked opposite each other and vehicles not being able to get through. What do they expect us to do?" The Bluestone Rise residential estate was granted a planning permit for subdivision in 2004 and standards have since changed. Council's director of planning and environment Angela Hughes said what was approved some 16 years ago, might not be approved today under current standards. A new series of hula hoop classes soon to be delivered at Castlemaine Botanical Gardens and Maldon public gardens aims to get locals aged 65 and over up and hoollering. Or should that be hooping? Either way it's hoped the new series of taster classes being delivered through Castlemaine District Community Health

Witness call

(CHIRP) will become a regular weekly thing running right through to March. "These hula hoop sessions are a taster and are free, with funding through the federal government's Move It project aimed at people 65 and over," project worker with Move It, CHIRP's Julie Gittus says. The first sessions are set for Castlemaine Botanical Gardens on Thursday, November 26 and on Thursday December 3 - and at the Maldon Gardens on Tuesday December 1.

Police are appealing for witnesses to an alleged road rage incident that occurred on Lancefield-Melbourne Road, between Romsey and Monegeetta. The incident occurred on November 6, between 12.15pm and 12.45pm, and involved a blue Hyundai i30 Sedan and a yellow Hyundai i30 Sedan. Witnesses to the incident are asked to contact senior constable Jason Downie at the Kyneton Police Station on 5421 2900.

Kyneton Primary School will share in state funding to improve sun protection at schools. Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas said the school would receive a small grant to assist with a shade structure to make outdoor more fun. "It's great for kids to spend time playing outdoors and keeping active. These grants mean Kyneton school children can still enjoy the outdoors while having the necessary items they need to be protected from the sun," she said. When used alongside other sun protection measures such as sunscreen and clothing, shade structures are the best defense and can reduce overall exposure to UV radiation by up to 75 per cent. In 2018, melanoma was the fifth most common cancer in Victoria with 3096 new cases diagnosed and 291 deaths.

Suited to each age group, participants will learn about road rules, principles of safe riding and sharing the road, the importance of visibility and practical ways to stay visible, a range of safe options for negotiating intersections and roundabouts, and how to choose safe routes to school. They will learn how to do a bike safety check and ensure that their bike and helmet fit correctly. In a pilot workshop of 'Get On Your Bike' delivered in January 2020, participants said they were more knowledgeable about road rules and felt more confident riding than they had before attending. As an example of improved knowledge, one participant's mother observed her 12-year-old son explaining to his younger sister how she could tell that a car would stop for her at a give-way sign (when she had priority). The program has a strong emphasis on sharing the road safely with other users; and on cyclists taking responsibility for their own behaviour and appreciating the needs and behaviour of other road users, including motorised vehicles and pedestrians. Festival founders Caz Walsh and Mason West said they had to make the tough call last month not to go ahead with plans for their inaugural festival on the Western Reserve. "With restrictions the way they were we just couldn't see how it was going to be possible. We were pretty devastated," Caz said. "However, we were determined that the show would go on and therefore we are delighted to present the online cabaret for one show only this Saturday. It will be a great taster for what's to come at the 2021 event. A Castlemaine artist has won this year's prestigious Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture $40,000 Rural and Regional Development Award. Laura Woodward took out the award, which was judged on a body of the artist's work spanning the past decade. "I am very appreciative and humbled," said the artist who has her studio at Castlemaine's Wesley Hill industrial estate and specialises in large-scale sculptural installation pieces. "They're very much about the experience of the work - so what happens when you encounter it," the pleased artist told the Express on Friday. "They're very sculptural and a lot of them are kinetic, and the site is really important.

"They're often site specific and site responsive and they're working with the internal logic of the work. "I've got work in a touring show that's doing galleries around Australia at the moment and coming to Victoria next year. "I'd love to do some for this area." The award winners were announced last Wednesday evening at Melbourne's Fed Square. Ms Woodward's $40,000 award, sponsored by the Geoff and Helen Handbury Foundation, will now provide the local artist, who shifted to Castlemaine last year, with the opportunity to develop her practice and benefit her local community. Macedon Ranges Family Violence Network and Mount Alexander Family Violence Prevention Network are encouraging the community to join the global 16 days of activism movement and call out violence against women. The 16 days of activism from November 25 to December 10 is a global movement raising awareness of and challenging sexist attitudes, gender inequality and gender stereotypes. This year's theme is Respect Women: Call It Out. Both networks are excited to hold face to face events, according to COVID restrictions, that will be live streamed on Facebook and be part of a movement addressing some sobering gender-based violence statistics: * one in two Australian women have experienced sexual harassment in their lifetime * one woman a week in Australia is killed because of family violence, and * Australian women have to work an extra 56 days a year to earn the same pay as men for doing the same work Castlemaine MAFVPN will hold a vigil at Victory Park on December 6, 11am-noon, honouring those women and children who have died this year in Australia as a result of family violence. A flash mob will then perform the Break The Chain dance. There will also be Portraits for Respect where community members have an opportunity to have their photograph taken holding a handwritten message supporting gender equality and challenging sexist and disrespectful attitudes towards women and gender stereotypes. Kyneton On Wednesday November 25, from 1.45pm-2.45pm on the Kyneton Mechanics Institute grasslands, MRFVN will be

holding a vigil, placing of orange statues representing women and children victims (they will remain until December 10), then the Break The Chain dance performance. The Zonta Club of Kyneton will have a window display in the MRSC window in Mollison Street throughout the 16 days, which will include Portraits for Respect and Walking in My Shoes narratives. Art exhibition MAFVPN will also be holding an Art Exhibition: Respect See It Through for the duration of the 16 days in the Castlemaine Phee Broadway Theatre Foyer. Castlemaine runner Karl Quast has been hitting the Goldfields Track in recent months in training for running challenge 'Fight Like Fred'. The event aims to raise funds for multiple sclerosis research - a cause close to Karl's heart. The special event was initiated by Karl's friend Joel Van Oosten whose father Fred was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis 27 years ago when Joel was just six. Recently Fred's condition deteriorated and he has been hospitalised in his home town of Geelong for several months. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Joel, based in Melbourne, has been unable to see his father. Feeling incredibly helpless, Joel turned one of his greatest challenges into something positive and with the support of his friends has established fundraiser 'Fight Like Fred'. The event will see Joel, Karl and seven other friends collectively run 850 kilometres along the Anglesea surf coast and hinterland on December 5, raising money for The MS Society of Australia. Karl has been training four nights a week for up to three hours a time on the local Goldfields Track, dodging kangaroos at dusk for the cause. "We have two little ones in the house and I was working from home during the recent lockdown so it was good for me to be able to get out and have some time for me," he said. "I've been popping out after they go to bed with my headtorch on, exploring the local tracks and building up my fitness. I am probably running around 70 to 80 kilometres a week now to prepare for my 100km." Karl has been amazed by the local wildlife he has seen on his runs. "It's been terrific and it's really great for your mental health and wellbeing," he said. Karl met Joel at uni at Ballarat and the pair have remained friends. "I really wanted to support him in this. I think the run aims to shed a light on MS, on the struggles that families have had in not being able to see vulnerable family members during the pandemic, and also on the importance of looking after our physical and mental health in what has been an extremely challenging year," Karl said. "We aim not only to raise lots of money

Department of Justice and Community Safety Traditional Owner Settlement Act 2010 Recognition and Settlement Agreement reached with the TAUNGURUNG The State of Victoria and the Taungurung Land and Waters Council Aboriginal Corporation (ICN 4191) (the Corporation) have entered into a Recognition and Settlement Agreement (the Agreement) under the Traditional Owner Settlement Act 2010 (Vic) (the TOS Act). The Corporation is appointed by the Taungurung Traditional Owner group as the Traditional Owner group entity. It stands on an island, and its graceful walls and conical turrets form a dreamy reflection in the water. Lorena spent a week wandering through the castle and the woods, sometimes crawling through the undergrowth in waterproof trousers to photograph a strange leaf or a tiny mushroom, sometimes discovering the perfect mystical ray of light as it shone through ancient stained glass, high on a wall of the building. All through the long uncertain months of COVID lockdown and restriction, Campbells Creek's Jane Rusden was creating something special. "I've had this idea knocking around in my head for years," the qualified zoologist-turned-artist says. "I wanted to have a flock of birds that you could walk through and that's what I've tried to achieve here." Jane is talking about Fragile, her new exhibition of work at Castlemaine's Lot 19 gallery. It features multiple hanging monoprint banners depicting birdlife of central Victoria. "It's on a very light Japanese paper so it's very floaty. The slightest breeze and they catch and sort of twirl," Jane says. "They're all central Victorian birds. Because of lockdown we haven't been able to go anywhere so they're all birds I see at home - fuscous honeyeater, dusky wood swallow, common bronze wing, brown falcon, eastern yellow robin, superb fairy wren." including one-off woodcut prints and works on paper. These celebrate the region's natural landscape while Jane's inner scientist sneaks out in the incorporated textual lists of bird species present and detected. "I've called it Fragile partly because I was feeling fragile and I think a lot of people are," Jane says. "And I was just reflecting on that while sitting in the bush making the work - that our bushland is fragile. It's so delicate. "I sit on the ground to make the work and you're sitting there looking at the tiny plants around you that somehow come up in a pretty hostile environment, and yet it's so resilient as well. "My own bush block at Campbells Creek would have been razed to the ground several times - the last time during the Depression." Fortunately all that has changed and Jane's block is now a thriving patch of natural habitat humming with life including the birds that inspire so much of her artwork. Milestone for councils

A record number of women were elected in Victoria's 2020 local government elections with Macedon Ranges again showing strong female representation. Macedon Ranges has voted in four female council representatives (of the nine elected): Annette Death, Jennifer Anderson, Janet Pearce and Anne Moore. They are among 272 women elected across the state representing 43.8 per cent of councillors. The trend for strong female representation continues for the council, which had five female elected representatives in the past term. Minister for Local Government Shaun Leane said that Victoria was the first state in Australia to top 40 per cent women councillors and showed good progress towards the 50 per cent target set by the Victorian Government's gender equality strategy, Safe and Strong. The new Gender Equality and Local Government Acts, passed into law earlier this year, put gender equality, diversity and inclusion as a key priority for local representation to ensure councillors reflect the communities that they serve.

Buying a property is likely to be the most expensive purchase you make. Some purchasers of residential and commercial property may not be aware that they can save a considerable amount of money if they are eligible for a discount or rebate on the stamp duty otherwise payable on their purchase. “The most common stamp duty concessions are the first-home owner exemption and concession, the pensioner stamp duty concession and the principal place of residence concession,” John says. The Victorian Government has provided an additional incentive to promote growth in regional Victoria by offering eligible purchasers of commercial and industrial properties a 50 per cent reduction on stamp duty. There are also government grants currently available in relation to residential properties. The First Home Owners grant, for those building or moving into a new property, and the HomeBuilder scheme that offers eligible Australian citizens grants of up to $25,000 towards building or renovating their homes.

What s happening in the district s real estate market? Is it a good time to sell or buy? Was that property a good investment? We spoke to some of the key players in the Macedon Ranges and Mount Alexander Shires real estate world to find out their view of the market right now as the first few weeks of Melbourne s movement restrictions lift. Has COVID changed people s ideas of where they would like to live and the value they put on their ideal home? Here s what the trends are now...

Agent comment - KEATINGS REAL ESTATE John Keating - Keatings Real Estate Woodend In the weeks leading up to the metropolitan area’s stage-four COVID restrictions being lifted, property enquiry levels increased significantly, says Keating’s Real Estate principal John Keating. “A number of sales were made,” he says. “And a number without inspections, they were sold through virtual inspections.” He says prices were not only met, but because some properties attracted several prospective buyers, prices achieved exceeded those asked for by the vendors. John says prices in the Macedon Ranges have certainly firmed, if not marginally increased by around the five-eight per cent mark. He says the need for a ‘metro escape’ has driven the rural demand, citing clean air, value for money and the ability to now work form home among the reasons people are making the move to the county. “There’s little doubt that homes that have a study or the ability to convert to a home office have increased demand,” John says. Also, properties with acreage, whether it be four, 40 or 400, are also attracting buyers. John says that at this stage it’s too early to estimate a percentage change in this area but things are looking good overall for Macedon Ranges property.

Agent comment - RAINE AND HORNE Jennifer Pearce - Raine & Horne Kyneton Raine & Horne sales manager Jennifer Pearce says there are more buyers than there are properties and the properties are selling fast. “We have a lot of people coming out of Melbourne and there is a shortage of properties,” Ms Pearce says. “A lot of buyers are already here and renting, they’re trying before they buy, and just working out where they want to be. “Seventy per cent of my sales are to locals in the Macedon Ranges this year, they are Melbourne people but they’re already renting here, their children are already in our schools and they’re waiting for the right property. “They’re even breaking their lease when that right property comes up. “There’s a high demand for rentals at the moment too, we’re suffering a real rental shortage.” Ms Pearce says anyone thinking of selling should get their property on the market now. “Interest rates have never been so low and once the big rush is over, who knows what the market will do in March, April next year.”

Agent comment - KEOGH REAL ESTATE Margaret Keogh - Keogh Real Estate Castlemaine Keogh Real Estate principal agent Margaret Keogh says her staff have never been busier. “We’ve had some very busy times in the past but nothing like this,” she says. “Enquiries and demand for properties across the region is unbelievable at the moment and that was even before restrictions were lifted last weekend. “Now with Melbourne opened up we’ve had several properties listed that have been very popular and have sold in a matter of days.” Margaret says properties will continue to sell within a few days of being listed, including residential houses and rural lots. “Demand for lifestyle properties of about five to 10 acres in size, which are now rarely available, has never been stronger,” she says. “Stock is short and listings are in demand.”

Study into COVID impact on health workers Castlemaine Health and Kyneton Health will be part of a unique research project exploring the impacts of COVID-19 on the health and wellbeing of the regional healthcare workforce. The three-year study, which hopes to recruit 4000 healthcare workers from health services throughout the Loddon Mallee region, aims to develop practical interventions that can improve workers’ responses to disasters in the future. Bendigo Health and La Trobe University will lead the study on behalf of the health services in the Loddon Mallee Health Network, St John of God Hospital Bendigo, the five Loddon Mallee Community Health Centres, the Murray Primary Health Network and the University of Copenhagen.

This consortium will jointly conduct the $1 million research project, which is funded through state government’s Victorian COVID-19 research fund. Castlemaine Health chief executive officer Ian Fisher said the project was an important means of understanding how the pandemic had impacted healthcare workers embedded in close-knit communities. “Health services in regional and rural communities are generally the largest employer, meaning the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare workers has a more direct impact on the community at large,” he said. “The study presents a unique opportunity to examine rural and regional populations, which have historically been underrepresented in this type of research.”

Epidemiologist associate professor Mark McEvoy from La Trobe Rural Health School is the principal investigator. Professor McEvoy said many overseas studies had assessed the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare workers’ mental health, but little research had been done to understand the “resilience factors” of workers and communities. “We don’t know the protective and resilience factors. We don’t know why some do really well in a pandemic and some don’t,” he said. “The study aims to establish this and develop resiliencebased interventions for healthcare workers so they can improve their response to disasters in the future.” Professor McEvoy said the study will begin recruiting healthcare workers this month.

A burst of creativity

With a challenge comes opportunity, and for a small team of young adults this year of uncertainty has provided the fuel. Like many, Castlemaine born and bred musician Nadia Phillips had hopes of international travel after completing Year 12 in 2019. She got one trip to Borneo in, but all other plans were abandoned. More time at home than ever imagined, gave her time to develop her passion for music. Nadia began piano as a five-year-old, with local teacher Audrey Steen shaping her musicality. Ukelele, violin, mandolin, piano and singing followed, with much inspiration from her time at Castlemaine Primary School. “In my mid-teens, I started writing and releasing demos on Soundcloud, and played a few shows when I could,” she muses. Following an upload of tracks to Triple J Unearthed as the pandemic took hold, a Sydney record company wanted to get involved. Now Nadia’s debut song On Reflection has been released globally on all streaming platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music. Emotive lyrics, brooding guitar and undeniably catchy

refrains underpin the breakout single. Capturing the tender and often painful realities of youth, the song finds a resolution in a classic Indie folk-rock style. To complement the song release, it was the chance re-introduction to filmmaker Henry Evans, former Girton Grammar student, that allowed Nadia to assemble a local team to create a videoclip that would hold its own and support her musical trajectory. “I’ve been fortunate enough to be travelling and living abroad for the past few years but with the coronavirus situation, I found myself back home in Castlemaine for the time being, which timed well with the song release,” Henry said. With Henry’s creativity and expertise, Nadia was inspired to introduce her local friend and budding filmmaker Maya Tummino to the project team. She also wanted to bring in photographer and drone enthusiast Yauka Lam, also a former Steiner and Castlemaine Secondary College student, to share the experience. Another skill base that was needed for props was construction, so Nadia’s Das Kaffeehaus colleague and friend Rudi Jahne was quick to lend a hand. “We had three full days of filming in the region, with loca-

tions like Golden Point Reservoir, Dog Rocks on Mount Alexander, the Pine Plantation and the Oak Forest in Harcourt as the backdrop, said Nadia. We also included the Webb’s Harcourt property and beautiful horse Avalon.” Another integral part of the equation was the styling of Nadia’s look for the filming. Again Nadia called on the wealth of talent in her local friendship pool, and the dress designed by Gabrielle Sharkey (@ole.uckers) adds something truly special to the imagery. “Then Henry worked his magic by editing the hours of footage into shape,” Nadia said. I’m so pleased with the end result, but most of all, I loved seeing how well everyone got along and how it inspired us all to tap into our creativity. Much better than bemoaning a lost year of exploring the world!” she laughs. The Tarrangower Dementia Alliance will be supporting clubs in Maldon to become more dementia friendly with small grants and practical support. The alliance is offering grants of up to $500 so people living with dementia can feel understood, accepted and included in local clubs. Interested clubs can also be supported by the alliance to develop a plan to make their club more dementia friendly. Alliance member Lyn said people living with dementia could continue to live active lives many years after diagnosis and social connection remains very important. “Maintaining social networks can sometimes be challenging for people living with dementia, so our alliance is committed to having more dementia inclusive clubs in Maldon,” she said. “There are lots of potential actions to consider by

clubs wanting to make it easier for people living with dementia to join them. For example, club members could wear name badges at all times. Signage also makes it easier for people living with dementia to find the exit or bathroom.” Completion of Dementia Australia’s Dementia Friends awareness program is a pre-requisite for receiving this funding. This free, short online session is designed to help you to learn more about dementia and the challenges faced by people living with dementia. As your newly elected councillors for the West Ward of Macedon Ranges Shire Council we thank all those who supported and voted for us in the recent council election. In particular, we wish to thank our families and our respective volunteers who helped us with letterboxing and other essential parts of our campaigns. We are honoured to have been elected and promise to represent all members of our local communities with integrity and commitment. This election was particularly close and we thank all our fellow West Ward candidates - Wes Turner, Lenka Thompson, Hayden Walsh, Diana Abruzzi and Brian Wilson - for their involvement and willingness to put themselves forward. We believe that fielding such a diverse range of strong candidates is great for democracy in our area and helped ensure a very high degree of engagement of residents and ratepayers in the election process. For how many of us does it beggar belief that local authorities are sanctioning the building of a supermarket at the main entrance to Castlemaine? This will be an inappropriate and destructive defacing of the approach to our historic city. While committed locals and our newspapers bring to notice our unique heritage and the need for its preservation in so many issues, the city's assets and the reasons for visiting it are still being eroded as a result of a lip service so often paid to the significance of our historic environs and origins. The most vital beginnings of Victoria's gold era, which totally redirected the demographic and future of our state, took place here. Neighbouring historic towns' entrances and centres seem more valued. When I walk past our 160-year-old market building and recall the elms that once shaded the main street, I hear the echo of ominous words that came from the council chambers and a mayor promoting their destruction (I paraphrase here): "It is the council's responsibility to take a town into its future, not to anchor it in its past". That was over 50 years ago, but the same uninformed irresponsibility is clearly still with us. I am much in favour of the competition and wider shopping opportunities a new supermarket would offer. An almost monopolistic stranglehold on this aspect of retail in Castlemaine has existed too long. Nonetheless, another location for a supermarket needs to be sought, away from the approach to the city. The obstruction of delivery and rubbish trucks, the constant flow of cars and distracted shoppers crossing busy roads where children will be walking or being

driven to and from school will be constant chaos. A more appropriate location is vital to the preservation of our already far too denigrated heritage as well as plain common sense, but it seems here "history repeats itself" and "we never learn".

Give people a choice Tony Bell, Castlemaine In response to Barb Ashworth's letter ('Immediate impact, Opinions, November 10). Point 1. The local pizza business closed down long before Domino's opened up. Point 2. 'Sheps' Bottlemart drive-in bottle shop closed down a couple of months ago, leaving Castlemaine with no drive-through bottle shop. Point 3. The amount of money that leaves our Shire weekly is staggering. So many people travel to Maryborough and Bendigo to do their shopping and while there, buy all other essentials. This sucks the guts out of already struggling shops here. Point 4. Castlemaine is the only place in Australia of its population and size that does not have two different supermarket chains. This would give shoppers a choice and also makes the supermarkets sharpen their pencil. Local shoppers will not travel to Bendigo or Maryborough for one or two specials, it's not practical; do the sums. By having a second player in Castlemaine it will actually benefit all the other businesses as the money will stay in Castlemaine. Point 5. Don't forget employment in construction during and after the build. Point 6. You talk about unique atmosphere and high tourism interest. That doesn't pay the bills seven days a week. All eateries struggle to survive and don't survive just on tourism. I've seen plenty come and go. Point 7. You talk about environmental ethos. Everyone does their bit; particularly the bigger companies as its part of their structure. So don't go bagging out a new business that wishes to spend millions of dollars in our shire to keep money in our shire and give people a choice.

Responsible actions Lois Murphy, Campbells Creek As an employee of MAAW whose role involves supporting the volunteers at the op shop, I feel compelled to speak out about the effects of recent statements by 'Friends of MAAW'. To have the op shop publicly dragged in to a dispute they have nothing to do with and painted as a divisive element is disheartening and destructive. These allegations have caused enormous hurt to people who donate their time and energy to the goal of animal welfare, and there is not a single person involved in the op shop operation who does not look upon the work of the shelter, and their own contribution to it, with a huge amount of pride. The proposal for a low-income vet clinic is laudable, but without basic financial specifics such as the cost of equipment, staff and ongoing operational funding, it is not a feasible undertaking. The organisation's shire funding and the op shop proceeds are already committed to the expenses of the shelter operations. The grant application was submitted without the authorisation of MAAW's official representatives; without legitimate costing, it represents a huge threat to the organisation's resources, which could jeopardise the future of the crucial animal welfare work that MAAW is committed to providing. This would be an unforgivable tragedy. I suspect that the majority of MAAW's members applaud our committee's considered and responsible protection of the organisation's primary goal, and their caution in relation to such a precarious undertaking.

Does wonders Gloria Meltzer, Chewton I fully agree with Jillian of Barkers Creek that 'Magnesium does wonders' (Opinions, November 10). A friend of mine who suffers IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) has found that magnesium in high doses has done wonders for her condition. It is also strongly recommended for anyone taking calcium tablets as magnesium assists calcium to work better. The two go together. Both specialists and naturopaths also recommend taking daily Vitamin D3. Many people still believe we get enough Vitamin D from the sun. This is a fallacy. One only needs to check this on numerous Google sites to understand this better.

Reconciliation and healing B Gray, Kyneton Re: 'Tarnished with blood' (Midland Express, October 6). Power to you Mr Byass for standing up and acknowledging a past wrong upon the Daung Wurrung people. The path towards reconciliation and the healing of intergenerational trauma continues to meet many political obstacles and rejections. However, it is uplifting to see young people taking a stand for change, which allows for new stories of strength and healing while bringing honour to the old people. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have a right to feel strong and in their culture. Removing the names of pastoralists involved in massacre is the right thing to do. We have a long way to go, but I hope one day, occurrences like council's 'forgetting' to mark culturally significant dates and media outlets overlooking Acknowledgement of Country and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voice will not be tolerated.

Supplement cut unfair Lisa Chesters, Federal Member for Bendigo The Expenditure Review Committee has agreed to extend the JobSeeker supplement to March 28 and reduce the rate by another $100 per fortnight. A cut of $100 per fortnight to households trying to survive on the smallest of incomes is just unfair and will leave many living in poverty. The federal government's extension of Coronavirus Supplement to March at this much lower rate does not relieve anxiety for JobSeekers heading into most expensive time of year. Without confirmation of an ongoing rise to the base rate, JobSeeker recipients will continue to fear how they'll live on just $500 a fortnight in a matter of months. The base rate actually prevented people from finding work and forced recipients to live in poverty, we can't go back to that. As of September, 10,053 people in the Bendigo electorate are on JobSeeker or Youth Allowance payments compared to 5921 in February (pre-COVID). I'm calling on the Morrison Government to keep the Coronavirus Supplement at $250 a fortnight and confirm an ongoing rise to the base rate. Owners Bede and Mary Gibson said a few recent warm days had brought a plethora of colour across all plants and a grand flush of roses. "Usually the landscape is starting to brown off around the end of November but this year green pastures across the Sutton Grange valley are in full view as far as the eye can see," Bede said. Autistic people often exhibit the gift of razor sharp focus and the kind of attention to detail that lends itself to certain pursuits. Kyneton artist Galen Sartore is no exception and uses his eye for detail and artistic energy to create one-of-a-kind themed chess sets that are now on display at local gallery, Art On Piper. Kathryn Portelli, president of Art On Piper, said the gallery was thrilled to exhibit Galen's striking work. "They're themed character chess sets that are really intriguing," Ms Portelli said. "They are handmade ceramic, and his pieces stand out because of their uniqueness." Currently on show and for sale are a faerie chess set and an emperor chess set. Ms Portelli said the gallery was pleased to be inclusive and welcome the work of a person with a disability. "Galen has enjoyed researching the themes that he models his pieces on and pairs them with timber boards by another maker, Brian Fitches," Ms Portelli said. Galen's work has also been promoted by the Macedon Ranges Art Trail online and has attracted a keen following. Founding manager Nadine Hartnett said no one else in the region was making chess pieces like these. "His pieces are so imaginative," Ms Hartnett said. "His work stands out because it is so original and he's creating more accessible art for people who may not otherwise get to appreciate it."

Woodend's Samson Briscomb has braved the razor to exceed his $5000 target in the World's Greatest Shave. Known for his lengthy golden hair, the 12-year-old recently experienced his first drastic haircut since grade prep and recognised it as an opportunity to make a difference. His World's Greatest Shave campaign raised more than $6150 and will support Australians diagnosed with blood cancers. While Samson and those around him have enjoyed getting creative with school crazy hair days and dress-ups, Samson discovered his hair could be appreciated in a whole new way. He saw his big chop as a chance to donate his locks to be made into wigs for those facing cancer treatment. Samson's family and friends have congratulated him on his efforts to support the World's Greatest Shave.

There has been almost no competitive petanque in Victoria this year but tournaments can now resume with the recent relaxation of state coronavirus restrictions. One of the first tournaments will be the Woodend Hanging Rock Petanque Club Triples. The club triples will be played at the club's new piste at the Old Woodend Racecourse in Forest Street on November 22 and players will compete from clubs across the state. Woodend Hanging Rock Petanque Club's John Pizzey said the competition would take place with limitations on spectators but looked forward to welcoming more people back soon. "It would be a great spectacle for many petanque players around the state to come and watch, to see some of the leading players around the county perform and to get a few tips on the art of our game," he said, "but sadly this will not be possible for this tournament due to the restriction on contact numbers still in existence, this is a real shame as the facility offers tremendous spectator opportunities. Better safe than sorry though and we look forward to welcoming everybody on another day when these restrictions are over." The club is pleased to report that play among its members is back in full swing with great numbers turning out at Thursday 'Petanque at the Rock' sessions at Hanging Rock Reserve and at the new facility at the Old Racecourse on Monday afternoons. Kyneton golf Barry O'Donnell was a runaway winner of the Stan Porter Memorial Triphy at Kyneton Golf Club on Saturday. O'Donnell carded 42 stableford points from a handicap of 34. Lancefield golf Perfect conditions led to some excellent scores in Lancefield Golf Club's stableford event on Saturday. Romsey golf On a stunning spring day two pairs had excellent rounds in Romsey's two ball aggregate stableford on Saturday. Others began well, but went awry on a couple of holes. Mitchell Atlas (9) and Steve Wilkins (2) came in with 72 points, one clear of Andrew Clement (9) and Ryan Davies (23). Davies was the individual winner with 42 points. Wednesday's stableford attracted a smaller but very cheery field, with play completed before the rain tumbled down. Good scores came from winner Jenny Hartley 38 points (23 handicap), Elaine Scanlon 37 (33) and Darlene Baker (36 (21).

Cricket expanding in GDCA Bill West

The Gisborne District Cricket Association's 2020-2021 season begins this weekend, with a record number of teams participating. The association is in a unique situation, with clubs spread across both regional and metropolitan areas. For five weeks a one-day regional comp. has been taking place each Saturday to retain players' interest, with memories still lingering of the COVID-19 pandemic preventing grand finals being played in 2019-2020. Increased interest in the game has seen the association 24 clubs nominate a total of 74 senior men's teams, 74 junior boys' teams, four senior women's teams, and 19 junior girls' teams," stated GDCA president Rob McIntyre. In effect, it's the "real deal" this weekend with metro and regional teams all participating. Only a good look at a large map can really

shed light on the perimeters of the GDCA, which celebrated its Centenary last season, with Hall of Fame instituted. In the north the clubs are Malmsbury, Kyneton and Lancefield, then its across to Wallan in the east, and Trentham and Blackwood in the west. Then there's several Sunbury-based clubs, and Diggers Rest, Aintree, and Melton area clubs including Melton South for the first time this season. SEVEN IN McINTYRE CUP Circumstances have resulted in the top grade (McIntyre Cup) having seven teams only, with Gisborne and Bacchus Marsh expected to be strong contenders again. Romsey should be in contention after missing the finals last season. This Friday (November 20) U17 and U14 girls and U11 boys' teams will play. Saturday sees senior men, and U17, U15 and U11 boys' teams in action. The newly formed Kookaburra Women's League sees round of Twenty/20 format tak-

Last season Romsey finished in second place on the ladder, and were fourth in 2018. O'Sullivan recently stated he could not commit the time needed to the role, but was proud of his achievements, with the Redbacks having a good blend of players. He predicted, that providing the playing list is retained, the club should again be well in contention in the seasons ahead.

Pioneers nab young Tigers Two of Kyneton's outstanding teenage footballers have been included in Bendigo Pioneers Under 19s boys' pre-season squad. They are the obviously talented Bailey McGee (right) and Louis Thompson (left). A squad of 39 players, featuring 17 top aged and 22 bottom aged players, was announced last week. Due to COVID-19, the boys' NAB League season failed to begin in 2020, with plenty of boys across the region keen to start kicking a football again. It is hoped the Latrobe University Pioneers pre-season squad will begin training on Sunday, November 29. Coach Damien Truslove is in charge of developing the boys' skills and football knowledge to ensure they are fully prepared for the 2021 season. "It's been a very long year without football, so it's important players are excited to get back to being with their mates," he said. Truelove acknowledged there will be many players that are disappointed they are not part of the initial training squads. He emphasised there would be talent scouts in all of the regions watching community football in 2021. "If players continue to perform well at community level they will be given the opportunity to be included throughout the season. "Further, if players who have already been selected are not meeting out expectations they may be released back to local football." The five-year-old gelding, ridden by in-form apprentice Madison Lloyd, finished with a withering burst to take out the Carrazzo Consulting BM70 Handicap over 1200 metres. Chase Award, part-owned by trainer George Agent and strong stable client Alex Babuskis, started at $7 after a last start sixth at Bendigo. The winner has now won three times, with five placings, from 11 race starts, with prizemoney approaching $67,000. KYNETON MEETING Kyneton & Hanging Rock Racing Club conducted an eight-event program on Friday. Racing took place on a soft 7 rated track, with locally trained horses missing out on first placings. Harry Coffey took riding honours with a double, winning Maiden events aboard Ready to Indulge and Lunatic Frinage. The next meeting at Kyneton is the Xmas Party Race Day, on Tuesday, November 24.

This is a popular introduction to navigation sports for the family and for fitter people looking to add interest to their regular walk or training run. Romsey Football Netball Club is delighted to announce Paul Kennedy (pictured) will be the Redbacks' senior football coach for season 2021. A very experienced coach, Kennedy impressed the club with his strong credentials, and is already making plans to begin preseason training, most likely in late November or early December. The new coach resides in Heathcote, and coached that town's club in 2015 before continuing his coaching career with Northern District League clubs Hurstbridge and Diamond Creek. Prior to last season - which did not eventuate on-field because of the COVID-19 pandemic - he was appointed assistant coach at Airport West, in the strong Essendon District League.. Kennedy aims to have the Redbacks well prepared to return to the field for the beginning of the 2021 season. The Redbacks won premierships in 2014 and 2015, but since then "home grown" coach Corey O'Sullivan has been in charge, rebuilding the line-up to be a challenger once again.
