Chewton Fire Brigade volunteer Steve Womersley has been named as the runner-up in the annual CFA National Volunteer Week Photo Competition.

Steve snapped this picture of fellow brigade members amid the smoke.

“It’s a photo of my mate Mouse (Barry Mounsey) who’s always got a keen eye for a dangerous tree,” Steve said.

“A fire had broken out in the scrub outside Lexton and we’d been called there the following day to help with blacking out.

“The light was lovely and we were in a position where we weren’t too pressured so I had the opportunity to step back and take a couple of good shots."

After receiving submissions from across the state, the photos were marked against a variety of criteria and judged to best represent CFA values.

CFA chief officer Jason Heffernan said the photos were not only visually spectacular, but also captured the essence of CFA volunteers.

“This competition highlights how the values of safety, teamwork, adaptable, integrity and respect are displayed by our volunteers every day,” Mr Heffernan said.

Protection urged on mining bid Amy Hume

Macedon Ranges Council has urged protection of the shire's sensitive environment as authorities assess a Baynton mining exploration bid.

Currawong Resources' has applied for a licence to explore for minerals in Baynton, Baynton East and Sidonia (EL007504).

But in its submission to the Earth Resources Regulation, the council detailed concerns relating to landscape, environment and Aboriginal cultural heritage.

MRSC flagged the exploration site included important sites that had been mapped for protection in a proposed significant landscape overlay.

It stressed the Ranges' unique environment and areas of biodiversity as the first declared distinctive area and landscape under the Planning and Environment

Amendment Act 2018.

The council said any application should avoid significant waterways and areas of biodiversity, and activities should "be mindful of protecting significant roadside vegetation".

It also advised authorities must engage with the Taungurung Traditional Owner group to identify areas of importance.

First step If granted, the Baynton licence would not permit mining to occur, nor does it guarantee that a licence for mining would be granted in future.

ERR executive director Anthony Hurst explained, "Minerals exploration is a different activity to mining. It is the first step in determining if minerals are present".

“Explorers use low-impact methods to understand local geology and look for evidence of minerals over a large area.

They then typically focus activities on a smaller zone.”

“If a licence is granted, explorers must engage with locals and comply with a code of practice regarding their activities.”

Ranges in sights Mining companies have had the region in sight since the 2018 recovery of 356,230oz high-grade gold at Fosterville, near Bendigo.

The regulator is currently assessing four Macedon Ranges minerals exploration licence applications (EL007048, EL007468, EL007504 and EL007460).

Currawong's Baynton application has been described as a smaller subset of the exploration area proposed under licence application EL007260 (Lancefield).

More recently, the regulator granted exploration licence EL0007329 to Red Rock Australasia in April. The interest area spans Lancefield and Romsey, Monegeetta and Clarkefield to Kalkallo.

Supermarket plan heads to VCAT Eve Lamb

A controversial planning permit application for a proposed Woolworths supermarket in Castlemaine's Forest Street is headed to VCAT with a mediation session set for next month to be followed by a hearing in November.

Lascorp Development Group, developers proposing plans for the site, lodged the application on April 1 citing failure by Mount Alexander Shire Council to grant the permit within the prescribed time.

Size Matters, a community action group opposing the size and location of the proposed supermarket, has confirmed it is also preparing to attend the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing.

The group last week told the Express it was encouraging all objectors to the proposed development to register to be heard at the fiveday hearing set down for November following the mediation session set for July.

Size Matters spokesperson Mark Koehne said there had been more than 200 official objections to the proposal so far.

He said there were "many more" awaiting a VicRoads traffic report before submitting their formal objection.

VicRoads lodged its report to the council on May 3.

"A lot of people were waiting on the VicRoads report before writing their formal objection," Mr Koehne said.

"Now they may be unable to do so because the developer lodged with VCAT in April, well before the report was submitted to council.

“The developer has bypassed council’s role in the process, limiting any further notices of objection from the local community, despite the fact that council had not yet received advice from VicRoads, the EPA or any other authorities it relies upon to make an informed decision.

“A key concern of council is the soil contamination of the site, yet the developer has refused to address this issue in its correspondence with council or VCAT. “Groundwater leaching analysis shows abnormally high levels of arsenic, copper, lead, zinc and mercury.

"These contaminant plumes are migrating southward from the site towards the nearby Forest Creek," Mr Koehne said.

"The site continues to have serious cate-

gory A toxicity yet the developer has taken no remedial action and continues to ignore the impact of this on the creek and the nearby primary school opposite the site.

"We've got a committee of eight people and we're encouraging all objectors to register to be heard at VCAT. "When we had a public meeting we had over 100 people attend."

Size Matters is also concerned about potential traffic issues that it believes the proposed development would create along Forest and Duke Streets.

Other issues of concern it lists are the visual impact of a large-scale supermarket on the gateway to the heritage township and economic impacts on locally owned and operated food retail outlets.

A Kyneton man has been arrested after three people were injured in a suspicious fire in the Newmarket Hotel at Kyneton last Tuesday night.

Fire broke out in the upper floor accommodation section of the hotel shortly before 7pm.

Win for Lancefield farmer

A Lancefield farming family is likely to continue retail trade to supplement work on the land despite earlier fears their plans may be shut down.

Farmer-contractor Jack Richmond sought to legitimise and improve Lancefield Garden Supplies, the family business he has operated for 10 years on the corner of his 220-acre property at 136 Main Road.

Plans relocate retail operations to the southern corner of the property with a small office and new road access that has now gained council support. Council officers had rejected the plans with reservations about removal of productive agricultural land, contrary use to the Farm Zone and failure to justify its support to the farm. Amenity impacts and car parking were also flagged.

They received one objection.

But Cr Bill West urged councillors to consider the merit in the plans and gained support in a 7-2 vote.

He argued Mr Richmond was a genuine farmer and "a permit would simply tidy an existing situation in one corner of the property".

"To me this is a clear case of adopting a common-sense approach for a situation we could easily get bogged down in from a planning perspective," he said. "One could

Among lengthy conditions imposed, the applicant would require a detailed and council-endorsed farm plan.

Both Cr Janet Pearce and Cr Mark Ridgeway were satisfied the business was an extension of farming activities and a farm plan would clarify uses.

"It's common practice these days for farms to have a small retail component incorporated into their business model. It's how many, particularly small, farms survive," Cr Ridgeway said.

"Having restrictions on what can and can't be done in a Farm Zone is for the reason of keeping farmland as farmland - and that's what is happening in this particular situation."

But Cr Anne Moore was adamant the plan was "totally contrary to what is required within the Farm Zone".

"I feel that if this is approved, it's going to open up a cavalcade of applications for variation to what is required within farming zones," she said.

Cr Rob Guthrie said the council had seen enough fragmentation of farmland and needed to draw a line in the sand.

Cr Moore and Guthrie were the only two councillors to vote against approval.

A recipe for success Bernadette Nunn

Kyneton’s Ian Kohlman has made history as the first bloke to cook his way from the Kyneton Show to the state final in baking.

“I’m feeling stoked,” he said. “Isn’t it ridiculous something like this and you feel so excited about it.”

Kohlman won best carrot cake against a strong field of competitors at the last Kyneton show in 2019 but had to wait until now for the regional finals after COVID cancelled most agricultural shows last year.

He first entered the Kyneton Show in 2018 when he was facing a “very life-shortening prognosis” after discovering he had an aggressive metastatic prostate cancer.

“My response was, ‘so be it’, but I am not just going to lie down and die,” Kohlman said.

He and wife Deb had met as scientists working at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute. Retired to Kyneton, Ian never thought he’d be seeing it “from the other side of the fence”, as a patient about to start chemotherapy.

“I thought I had to do something so I might as well make a cake. It shifted my mindset from worrying about what the outcome of all this might be and let’s just live for the day.”

Deb had won the VAS fruit cake competition five of the six times she’d entered so Ian decided to enter the only other VAS baking class – carrot cake.

“I am not going to go up against my wife,” he said.

While Ian’s a good cook, Deb says he’s not a baker and had never made a carrot cake. But he won.

“That really helped me,” he said. “I felt really good about that, rather than sitting around moping.”

He wasn’t expecting this country show success either – trumping wife Deb who’s never placed in the regionals.

“I don’t care how I went, I just wanted him to win because I knew it would mean a lot to him,” Deb said.

“He doesn’t want to blow his own trumpet but you can tell he’s a little bit pleased. It’s a big achievement.”

“I think she’s more excited than I am - and I’m pretty stoked,” Ian said.

Kohlman is one of only three Kyneton Show entrants to win at the group finals in Seymour where winners of the VAS categories from each of the region’s shows compete to decide who represents the Central and Upper Goulburn group at the state level.

At 89, three-time state sewing champion Janice Sinnott will be competing in the state knitting final, which she’s also won previously.

Metcalfe’s Gai Stewart won through to the state final in the crocheted article competition.

They will represent Kyneton in the Victorian championship at September’s Royal Melbourne Show.

The baking state final will be at the VAS state conference in Bendigo late June.

“I’m still aiming for perfection,” Kohlman laughed.

Nature played ‘a trump card’ Burn controller details what went wrong in Cobaw planned burn

The man at the centre of two planned burns that escaped control in the Cobaw Forest 12 years apart has spoken publicly for the first time about what went wrong.

Lee Gleeson was the planner and controller of the most recent Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning burn that escaped its boundaries on Grand Final Day 2015 in hot, blustery conditions, destroying four homes and burning 3000 hectares of land.

He said that despite popular opinion, the burn did not escape control due to negligence.

"No one goes out there to light a burn that has potential to get away," he told the Express.

"There are many factors that affect the result of a burn and sometimes there are unforeseen factors, sometimes there is operator error with lighting patterns and sometimes Mother Nature plays a trump card.

"In this case Mother Nature played a trump card."

Mr Gleeson said the weather forecast on both days before the burn was lit had indicated five days well within prescription to complete the burn.

On Wednesday, the burn was ignited about 10.30am and ignition was completed about 4pm.

"We only completed about 60 per cent of the original planned burn area as we wanted to make the burn safe before the weekend," Mr Gleeson said.

"Our planning ensured that we maintained a 24-hour presence on the burn, mopping up and blacking out to make the burn safe.

"By the time we got to the weather briefing on Thursday, the weather had got marginally worse but was still well within prescription.

"Monday and Tuesday after Grand Final Day were potentially spike days but this would have been five to six days after ignition was completed on the Wednesday."

LESSONS LEARNT Mr Gleeson said he was determined that the 2015 burn would be completed without

incident, having learnt from the 2003 burn escape in the Cobaw Forest.

"Staff did not leave the fire line on Grand Final Day, occasionally a vehicle will head out for water but no one was instructed to leave the burn," he said.

"While we were conscious of the public holiday on the Friday and then Grand Final Day, our focus was on making sure there were sufficient resources patrolling and blacking out the burn 24 hours a day right through to the Monday morning.

"In 200,3 we left the burn overnight and at 5am the next morning it escaped - if crews were present they would have been able to contain that burn to a track back then.

"I was not making the same mistake twice."

Mr Gleeson said the forecast provided at 6am on the Saturday for the 2015 burn had been 28 degrees, with relative humidity of 30 per cent, winds around 15 to 25km/h and a dew point (moisture in the air) listed as nine or 10.

"Around 4pm Grand Final afternoon, when we could expect these maximum numbers, it was actually 30 degrees, a relative humidity of only 14 per cent, winds as forecast and a dew point of -1," he said.

"This equates to an extremely dry atmosphere that then also dries the fine fuels out even more.

"These conditions mean that any ember falling in dry fuel would ignite a new fire.

"The crews that were patrolling the edge of the burn caught about four of these but then were overwhelmed by spot fires because it was so dry.

"These conditions were never forecast, between Monday before the burn right through to the Saturday morning, and if they were there would have been two outcomes – one, perhaps the burn would not have gone ahead, or two, there would have been 20 people out there patrolling on the Saturday, not seven.

"In 2003 I spent three weeks talking to every land owner affected and developed a Rehabilitation and Recovery Plan – this time around I was denied the ability to get out and engage with the affected community.

House plan rocked

Plans to build in the shadow of Hanging Rock have been rejected in a move to protect sightlines from the icon.

A single-storey house was proposed at 1427 Rochford Road, Newham, but neighbours challenged it would negatively impact the landscape without ability for screening.

In a 3-3 vote, deputy mayor Mark Ridgeway used his casting vote to topple the plans at last week's council meeting.

Cr Rob Guthrie led the push for refusal against council officer recommendation, stressing the importance of protecting the Ranges' significant landscapes and sightlines.

He highlighted significant landscape overlay objectives, and questioned the proposal's fit within the Hanging Rock Strategic Plan and Rural Conservation Zone.

Cr Annette Death held concerns about the location of the house on the property and the proposed set-back. She felt the proposal was inconsistent with the Rural Conservation Zone.

"Councillors are in a situation to make a decision that will protect and enhance the landscape and in this case, it's our very special Hanging Rock precinct," she said.

The 2.428ha site is located on the western side of an unmade portion of Highland Lane and is about 210m to the north of Hanging Rock with views to and from the icon.

Cr Geoff Neil argued the landscape had already changed with houses on most blocks in the area. He questioned whether this house would be noticeable from the top of Hanging Rock.

"All I can see here is an honest person wanting to put a house on a block they own," he said.

"If he's going to put a house on this property, if he's going to look after this property, if he's going to keep it vermin-free, weed-free and productive, then he should be there. Bottom line."

Also speaking in favour of the proposal, Cr Anne Moore said the applicant had worked with the council "to make the building as unobtrusive as possible".

A division recorded Crs Ridgeway, Guthrie and Death in favour of permit refusal, and Crs Neil, Moore and Bonanno against.

Mayor Jennifer Anderson, Cr Bill West and Cr Janet Pearce declared conflicts of interest and were not involved in the debate.

Lee Gleeson now works as a senior fire management officer for the Northern Territory government.

"Three years after this planned burn escape I resigned from the department and moved my family to the Northern Territory so that I could be back full time in fire management."

Mr Gleeson said planned burning was one of the few cost-effective management tools to maintain fuel hazards at acceptable levels.

"It gives firefighters at DELWP, Parks Victoria and the CFA a fighting chance at suppressing fires," he said.

"The community should continue to support and encourage land managers to fuel reduce on Crown land to complement works done by private property owners.

"It has to be an all-in approach to manage fuel loads right across the landscape to help reduce the impact of bushfires on communities and the environment."

THOROUGH INVESTIGATION A spokesperson for Forest Fire Management Victoria told the Express that matters relating to the 2015 LancefieldCobaw fire were subject to a thorough independent investigation by the Inspector-General for Emergency Management.

The investigation made 42 findings and 22 recommendations to the government, including that the department improved its risk assessment for planned burns and ensured adequate contingency plans were in place.

Macedon Ranges Council pushed for a costing and feasibility report on the development of a new council operated facility.

Cr Mark Ridgeway said residents had sought the facilities for years and gained full support for his motion.

"This will put us in a position to watch out for any funding opportunities that may come our way," he said.

The council is soon to begin a review of public toilets over the next few months.

A day to take action Ecosystem restoration will be in focus when Macedon Ranges Shire Council celebrates World Environment Day. This year’s theme promotes the roles of ecological restoration and sustainable land management.

MRC is holding a series of events to celebrate the day: Woodend Farmers Market stall with details on the draft roadside conservation management plan (9am-1pm), Black Hill Reserve guided walk (10am-noon), tour of a restored Newham property (noon-2pm), and tour of a holistically managed farm in Malmsbury (2pm-3pm).

Stop illegal destruction

Visitors to Victorian parks, forests and reserves are being urged to source firewood responsibly as a multi-agency operation works to protect wildlife habitat from the impacts of illegal wood removal.

Conservation Regulator authorised officers, Forest Fire Management Victoria crews and Parks Victoria rangers have combined for Operation Hollows, targeting people attempting to illegally cut or remove trees for firewood.

It is important people collect firewood from designated areas during the two collection seasons, as trees and fallen wood outside these areas are crucial habitats for native wildlife like the powerful owl, greater glider, fat-tailed dunnart, spotted-tailed quoll, and small geckos, skinks and lizards. Some trees also have cultural significance.

The ongoing operation also targets people selling large quantities of illegal firewood.

Those purchasing firewood can help preserve habitat and heritage by ensuring they buy from reputable sources.

The maximum penalty for people caught illegally destroying habitat trees is $8261 plus potential seizure of equipment, including vehicles and chainsaws and/or one year in prison.

From March to November 2020, 183 people were fined a total of $98,801 for illegally

Castlemaine Documentary Film Festival is set to return to the big screen at the Castlemaine Theatre Royal in 2021.

C-DOC was forced online last year due to the COVID-19 lockdowns and therefore it was apt organisers dubbed the 2020 festival 'C-DOC - In the Clouds'.

This year organisers look forward to returning to 'terra firma' and once again holding their screenings and highly anticipated Q&A panels at the historic theatre on the weekend of July 24-25.

State government rebates for solar panels and battery storage are guaranteed at current values until June 30, 2021. From July 1 they will change, and based on past years, the change is likely to be downwards (but of course, you never know!).

We are lucky in Victoria to have a generous rebate program for solar and batteries, as this is not the case in all states.

What they are worth The Victorian Government rebates – administered by Solar Victoria through the Solar Homes program – are worth applying for if you are interested in solar panels or a battery for your home.

Currently they are: • Solar panels – up to $1850 (owner-occupied properties and rental) • Solar panels interest-free loan – up to $1850 (as above) • Battery storage – up to $4174

Deadlines Solar Victoria will honour the rebate application of anyone who has submitted a completed application via their portal by June 30, providing there are sufficient rebates and they meet the eligibility criteria. As of June 28, the remaining allocation of rebates through to June 30 is around 7600 for solar panels and 2400 for batteries.

Before you can submit an application, you need a quote from an authorised solar retailer listed on the Solar Homes website.

The MASH solar retailer – Cola Solar – is an authorised solar retailer for the Solar Homes program.

Cola Solar has made a commitment that any MASH enquiry made by Friday June 25 will have a quote completed before the end of June and uploaded on the Solar Victoria portal to allow people to submit their application by the June 30 deadline.

When Woodend artist Dr Ray Hearn read our report on the campaign to rename Hutton Street in Kyneton, due to the street namesake's links to an Indigenous massacre in 1839, he was inspired to create a collage to acknowledge this history.

To celebrate Reconciliation Week 2021, Hearn has shared his work with us.

"The collage deals with the Campaspe Downs massacre of 1839 involving Charles Hutton, news that had come to light after I read about concerns regarding the naming of Hutton Street in Kyneton," Hearn said.

"It turns out that Hutton was the first 'settler' to take up land in central Victoria, coming down from the colony of NSW, and following the trail of the explorer Major Mitchell only two years earlier.

"To the Dja Dja Wurrung the Campaspe River was 'Yalka', or dry leaves. To Mitchell it was all terra nullius - empty land - and two years later Hutton arrived unwanted to fill it."

Hearn asked what was now to be done?

"Should we change the street name? Of course not. Rename the river perhaps though," he said.

"I was taught in school and afterwards (as we all were) that the Aboriginals were but primitive heathen wanderers who eked out a simple miserable existence. Savages.

"I was fed humbug not just at school but for most of my adult life."

Hearn said his first response was that we needed to know more about Aboriginal life.

"The Dja Dja Wurrung had been here for 45,000 years or more before Hutton arrived," he said.

"We need to honour and respect the First Australians, to be interested and to show it.

"It would be wonderful to see them being treated with amazement and respect and for us to know more, not less, about them because they truly are a remarkable people."

2021 marks 20 years of Reconciliation Australia and almost three decades of Australia’s formal reconciliation process.

Renewables proposal

More renewable energy projects would be connected faster, helping provide cleaner power to Victorians and supporting the state to meet emissions reductions, under a new plan by electricity distributor Powercor.

Home to four of Victoria’s six Renewable Energy Zones, Powercor has proposed using its distribution network to enable the connection of large-scale renewable projects in response to the Victoria Government’s Renewable Energy Zone discussion paper.

The proposal seeks to unlock 1.3GW or capacity on the existing network and improve reliability for customers through a series of network upgrades over two stages, including grid-scale batteries installed across up to 20 existing network sites.

The proposal complements the Victorian Government’s recent announcement of a 45-50 per cent emissions reduction target by 2050, with a faster transition to renewable electricity generation a key driver.

Powercor's general manager of electricity networks, Mark Clarke, said distribution networks should be considered as part of a whole-of-network solution to unlocking the targeted 10GW of new renewable energy capacity in the shortest time possible.

“Connecting renewable energy at the distribution network level is fast, simple and generates greater benefits more broadly spread out at the local level,” Mr Clarke said.

“The real opportunities come from creating jobs and network capacity that will benefit a large number of diverse communities.”

The Powercor proposal requires no new easements and uses existing land and assets held by Powercor to ensure no additional impacts on the visual amenity of communities or local agricultural or natural environments.

“We can support new renewable generation while also improving power reliability and network capacity for more solar, EV charging infrastructure and battery programs in local communities,” Mr Clarke said.

Already, 2GW of renewable energy generation is connected to the Powercor network, with another 2.3GW of active connections enquiries or applications ranging in size from 1MW to 150MW in the assessment process.

Mr Clarke said having comparatively smaller projects connected via the distribution network meant more projects could be built at the same time, leading to more jobs for regional Victoria.

The recently retired maternal and child health nurse has seen the children of babies she first met when she began in the role in 1990 but can't imagine how many babies that overall figure would equate to.

"New babies alone, every year there would be at least another hundred," she said.

"I did a little bit of midwifery when I first came here at Mount Alexander Hospital in 1989, and I was also doing some maternal and child health in Gisborne, Riddells Creek and Heathcote and then in 1990 the job came up in Kyneton.

"I love families, and working with families."

A mother of five herself, Chris said Victoria's maternal and child health system was world renowned as a support for families and children from birth to five.

"We've got 10 key age and stage visits, 10 crucial times in a child's early life between birth and three and a half," she said.

"It was considered that if every child could be seen at these specific periods of time we'd have a more well population because we'd be seeing children at critical stages of their development and making sure that development was actually happening.

"That was embraced by the public health system in Victoria, and that service is now more than 100 years old."

Chris was recruited by LearnToLive founder Yanti Turang to join the volunteer organisation on trips to provide vital healthcare to remote communities in Indonesia and Laos between 2013 to 2018.

"Chris was the primary maternal-child healthcare leader in our clinics, seeing all children and families," Yanti said.

"Her patience and expertise elevated the clinic experience for our patients.

"Every year when working with us, Chris would bring her suitcase full of clothing, baby scales, and gifts for the mums and kids.

"She connected with mothers and babies like no other clinician I have worked with. Her warmth and knowledge, along with her intuition, helped us treat and help hundreds of families."

Of the experience, Chris said she was overwhelmed by the number of people who'd never had access to healthcare before.

"Your eyes are opened to how these people have to survive," she said.

It left her with the perspective that we don't have anything to worry about here in Australia.

"We've got such an easy, wonderful life, the majority of us, and over there, these people don't have anyone to catch them, at all."

Targeting dog owners in regional and peri-urban areas, the campaign highlights the legal obligation of keeping a dog confined to its property and how doing so will keep the animal and the community safe.

Spokesperson Dr Tracey Marsden wants dog owners to be aware of their responsibilities.

“It’s law to keep your dog securely confined to your property; this means yards must have a closed gate and an escape-proof fence that it can’t jump over or get through,” she said.

“Dogs can find themselves in dangerous situations if they escape their properties such as getting lost, sustaining a traffic injury or fighting with other dogs.

“Keeping a dog safe at home will also prevent it from rushing, chasing or attacking a person or another animal, all of which have significant legal consequences.”

RSPCA Victoria receives many dogs that have escaped their properties or become lost and about 21 per cent are never claimed by their owners.

The campaign is expected to be prominent throughout June.

Past and present bank directors joined the milestone celebrations last week.

Two utes have been impounded in separate incidents combining disqualified drivers and speeding last month.

A Hesket driver was intercepted for travelling at 129km/h on Romsey Road near Hanging Rock on May 20.

Police said he provided a sample for breath for a preliminary breath test, which indicated the presence of alcohol, but refused to undergo further breath analysis and drug testing.

Enquiries revealed the 46-year-old was disqualified from driving at the time.

The ute was impounded for one month at a cost of $1475 to the driver, who will be summonsed to court at a later date.

Police warned a first offence for refusing to provide a sample of breath or oral fluid for testing results in a court appearance. Upon conviction, a fine and mandatory licence disqualification of two years applies.

Local police also intercepted a Silver Holden Colorado ute for speeding on the Calder Freeway at Malmsbury on May 16, about 10pm.

During the intercept, it was discovered the male driver was the holder of a disqualified Victorian probationary licence.

The vehicle was impounded at a cost of $1415 to the driver and he will be summonsed to appear at court at a later date.

Three Castlemaine grandmothers in their 80s recently put their bodies on the line to support a worthy cause.

Grace McCaughey, Pam Connell and Julie Begg joined a group protesting the destruction of a large area of old-growth forest in the Tarkine/Takayna, Tasmania.

The Takayna, in northwest Tasmania, is the largest intact cool temperate rainforest in Australia and has acknowledged World Heritage values.

The three grandmothers said land clearing was one of the main contributing factors for biodiversity loss, and Australia had been ranked as one of the worst developed countries in the world in this regard.

They joined other citizens concerned that a mine owned by Chinese company MMG had been given approval to clear fell pristine

rainforest to build a tailings dam in which to dump toxic waste.

"Anyone who wants to help preserve this magnificent rainforest needs to go and see it for themselves. If I can do it it at 84, anyone can do it," Grace said.

Julie Begg, just back from the camp, said the protestors were ordinary citizens of all ages who wanted to see old-growth forests preserved and protected for the future.

"My mother took me to Tasmania when I was eight years old and I have never forgotten the magic of those ancient trees, the feeling of awesome antiquity, the sheer beauty," she said.

"Trees can’t speak for themselves. They need people to stand up for them."

What about the 'informed choices' adults have made in the past that have resulted in all the war and mayhem of the first half of the 19th century and the insanity of the Vietnam War for instance?

Personally, I'm very much in favour of children not blindly following the informed choices adults make in this world.

As a resident of Riddells Creek I fully support equal ward expenditure on the new bike trail that is planned to run from Riddells Creek to New Gisborne, Macedon and Woodend.

Riddells Creek has the worst cycling infrastructure of any town in the Macedon Ranges.

I am a passionate and experienced cyclist with 40 years experience. I have cycled extensively around Victoria as well as in Europe, Asia and the United States.

I cycle over 100km most weeks around my much-loved Macedon Ranges. However, I am frightened every time I ride through my local town of Riddells Creek, or from Riddells Creek to our closest regional hub of Gisborne.

This is because the roads leading through and out of Riddells Creek to the north, east and south lack hard shoulders, have high speed limits and force cyclists into unsafe interactions with cars.

The bike path from Riddells Creek to New Gisborne is the most important piece of new transport infrastructure the Macedon Ranges has seen for many years.

It will provide an essential active transport link for Riddells Creek into Gisborne and on to the rest of the shire as well as a recreational and tourism asset. Macedon Ranges Shire has just declared a climate emergency. We know that we need to make urgent and dramatic changes and providing cycling links for our current and future residents.

I read with interest recently in your newspaper the discussion of councillors about the benefits of spending on the trail for walking, running and cycling from Woodend to Riddells Creek to the residents of my ward.

This proposed trail is the first major piece of infrastructure that has been spent on Riddells Creek since I and my family moved here 21 years ago.

I cycle a great deal around the Macedon Ranges and I can assure readers of your newspaper that of all the towns in the shire, Riddells Creek is the most dangerous and treacherous town to exit and transit.

It is important that the council spend the money it receives from residents in rates wisely. I am aware that there are many competing priorities. But if every councillor was to limit the amount of money spent on the whole of the shire to their ward then we would never spend any money on whole Shire projects such as this one.

Treacherous to exit Eris O'Donnell, Riddells Creek

I have encountered some very wrongheaded responses to the SchoolStrike4Climate. One of the most peculiar is the claim that kids should give up their iPhones if they are sincere about wanting climate action.

It's as though folk imagine the call for a shift to green energy is in fact a call for a return to the Stone Age. Nothing could be further from the truth. Action on climate change is synonymous with a shift to a new era of progress.

Leaving aside the ineffectiveness of the suggestion to reduce the fire hazard on rural roadsides by clearing both sides of road reserves and replacing those plants with new plantings just inside the adjoining property boundary, there remains the question of cost.

Who pays for the clearing of the roadsides, acquisition of replacement plants, tree guards, additional fencing and to plant and tend to the new plants, regardless of where they are planted?

Far more importantly though is the fact that, in recent surveys, rural roadsides have been found to retain remnant populations of threatened flora and fauna that would be difficult to replicate elsewhere in any other location. Firstly, to determine what was growing there originally, or could have been there decades ago before its elimination by inappropriate management of roadside vegetation, and then to actually acquire those replacement plants because their existence is threatened and in limited supply, or just not available because they cannot be propagated and/or have very unique habitat requirements.

A simple illustration is the problem in obtaining specimens of cherry ballart. A small understory tree often found on rural roadsides in association with mature eucalypts.

It has fine leaves similar to a cyprus tree, regarded as attractive, but is quite flammable.

Being low-growing, flammable, and seen as a fire hazard, it would therefore be removed in any rural road clearing exercise. But it cannot be easily replaced.

It is only in recent years that Goldfields Revegetation Native Nursery, Mandurang, has been able to produce any specimens for sale. Despite regularly potting many, only 15-20 actually survive long enough for sale each year and there is a two-year waiting list for small specimens at $22 each.

Aside from that limitation, cherry ballart is parasitic and will only grow in association with established eucalypts, soil fungi and freedom from grazing animals. It is site specific and thus will not grow as an isolated plant. Its widespread removal from roadsides would therefore likely lead to it becoming endangered because of the difficulty to propagate it and provide its unique environmental requirements. Similar difficulties also apply to other threatened flora or fauna on roadsides.

Online learner permit rollout Young local drivers have recently joined thousands accessing online learner driver permit tests as the state government scales up its rollout of the initiative.

As the online test is introduced across the state, 1000 extra prospective learners each week with existing test appointments will be invited to sign up and complete the test.

“All young Victorians should have the rite of passage that is learning to drive – and our fantastic new online learners’ course and test is removing the barriers of getting to a testing centre that so many regional Victorians previously faced," local MP Mary-Anne Thomas Thomas said.

The new test takes learners through a course that includes a mix of theory, interactive videos and visual graphics before the final assessment, reinforcing key road safety messages with mini-quizzes to progressively test learners’ knowledge in modules like speed, drink and drug driving, seatbelts, fatigue, distractions and road rules.

All prospective learners across Victoria will be able to sign up online by the end of this month.

To access the test, customers will need to create a myVicRoads personal account on a compatible device. The entire course and test will take between four and six hours to complete, with prospective learners having 12 months to sit and pass the

online test once they’ve registered.

When the online course and assessment has been successfully completed, learner drivers need to attend a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to confirm their identity, have their photo taken and complete an eyesight check – but this process does not require an appointment, and can be done at a time that suits the learner.

While the new test is rolled out, people can still sit the Learner Permit Test in person at VicRoads Customer Service Centres if they prefer – and those requiring interpreter services support will still be supported to take the test in person at a Customer Service Centre.

Roo time more than ever Take extra care on the roads this winter - data from insurance claims show that animal-related collisions peak during June, July and August and more than 85 per cent of animal collisions involve kangaroos.

Insurance Research Specialist Chris Emerson has warned drivers to keep a lookout for wildlife particularly with many people likely to take to the roads on the upcoming Queen's Birthday long weekend.

"Divers are reminded to stay alert at all times, take note of any signage about local wildlife and slow down, particularly if driving at dawn and dusk,” Mr Emerson said.

“Animals are unpredictable and can appear out of nowhere, so it’s important to slow down and be aware of your environment especially when you’re driving on roads that aren’t familiar. Colliding with a kangaroo is not only traumatic for the driver and the animal, it also causes

considerable damage to cars and can also result in serious injury.

“How you react when you see a kangaroo on the road can potentially save lives, so it’s important to remain vigilant. If you see an animal on the road while driving, try to brake, but don’t swerve to avoid it because you could collide with another car,” he said. * Take extra caution on the roads. If you can, avoid driving at dawn, dusk or night-time as this is usually when animals are most active, and lack of light makes it more difficult to see them * Reduce your speed inside sign posted wildlife areas * If you see a kangaroo on or near the road, you should try and brake, but not swerve to avoid a collision * If you hit an animal and safety permits, you should try to help by moving it to the side of the road to prevent further crashes.

Hence, they bring to audiences their June production of Blithe Spirit by the renowned playwright and wit, Noel Coward.

Considered to be his best known work, Blithe Spirit was first produced for stage in 1941, playing for several years on both the West End and Broadway. However, it is probably best remembered by the 1945 film version starring Rex Harrison and the incomparable Margaret Rutherford.

Blithe Spirit begins with Charles Condomine wishing to gain inspiration for his new novel. With this in mind he invites medium Madam Arcarti to conduct a séance in order to 'pick up some jargon' so to speak. Much to his horror he instead finds his late wife Elvira in his lounge room with plans to get into as much mischief as possible. Thus begins the challenge of getting her back to the 'other side'. The question is, exactly how much trouble can she cause?

Within a cast of familiar faces, Cathouse Players welcomes newcomer Annette Blanchard, having recently returned from the US. Playing June 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27 at the warm and inviting Kyneton Masonic Centre, which has been their ‘pop up’ theatre for over five years now. Wally Culpitt – an inspiration

The name ‘Wally Culpitt’ is lined synonymously with practically all sports played in Castlemaine.

A local football follower absorbed Barrie King’s comments (Express, May 25) casting doubts on the coaching tactics being used at the Castlemaine across the seniors, reserves and U17.5s, and suggested inspiration should be taken from the example set

by Wally Culpitt.

In the book ‘History of Football in the Bendigo District’ football historian John Stoward writes that to most Castlemainians, Culpitt is remembered as the man who led the Magpies to the 1952 premiership in the Bendigo League, breaking a 26 years drought.

With a string of outstanding successes behind him, Culpitt took the Magpies to the grand final in his first season as playing coach.

Castlemaine defeated Sandhurst 15.9 (99) to 9.16 (70) and Stoward described it as Castlemaine football’s most prized piece of history.

To Culpitt, it was another personal triumph to add to a magnificent collection.

Born in Mt Hawthorn, Perth, Wally moved to Victoria with his parents at the age of three.

He captained the Richmond State School football and cricket teams at the age of 10.

VFL club Carlton first noticed his football ability, but he lived in Hawthorn’s territory, and the Hawks would not clear him.

That began nine years of league football with Hawthorn, interrupted by two years with a RAAF Catalina Squadron at Darwin during the war.

He starred all over the field, equally as home at fullforward or fullback.

Continually in the news, Wally made the Victorian team on seven occasions, and in

1947, finished equal third in the Brownlow Medal.

He played 116 games for Hawthorn between 1940 and 1948, and kicked 116 goals.

In 1949, he became the highest paid coach ever to accept a post ‘in the bush’ when he went to Minyip at 20 pounds $40) a week.

It was a good investment for Minyip, making the final in the two years Wally coached them and broke two records in the Wimmera League.

Leaving Minyip, he was paid the honour of being the first coach at the club to ever receive a Civic Farewell.

Kyneton was the lucky team to have Culpitt’s services in 1951, and at the time he as described as the best coach in Victorian Country Football.

In 1952, Wally moved to Castlemaine to coach the Magpies for three seasons.

He took up permanent residence in the town with three of his sons (Bernie, Alan and Lester) going on to lay and have football careers with Castlemaine.

Not only did Wally Culpitt make a name for himself as a footballer, he also proved an outstanding cricketer with Hawthorn-East Melbourne and in the country.

His greatest cricket moment came in a match at South Melbourne when he hit Test bowler Ian Johnson for for four sixes into the adjacent bowling green.

The following match he clouted Test spinner Doug Ring over the Richmond boundary for five sixes.

When he moved to Castlemaine, Wally became a top country cricket and also excelled at bowls and golf.

PS: Culpitt survived a fall from the top of a tall power pole while at Castlemaine and virtually the whole town was chasing a medical update.

Macedon Rangers Soccer Club is celebrating Finley Emmerson's selection into Football Victoria’s Skill Acquisition Phase Program.

The SAP program works with clubs to identify and develop potentially talented Victorian players.

MRSC secretary Cynthia Pinnock said the program was a key building block in the Football Federation Australia National Football Curriculum and she was delighted to congratulate Finley on his achievement.

"Finley has worked very hard for this opportunity and he has made our club very proud. What an achievement for him and for our club in its first year," she said.

"Mum (Jo) and dad (Craig) are very

proud parents and for those that don’t know Finley, he our number 11 for the Boys Under 10 team.

"We look forward to watching him progress and inspire other Rangers to aim for this opportunity."

Football Victoria launched their SAP Centres for identified U9-12 Victorian boys last year. The centres are operating out of Darebin International Sports Centre and Knox Regional Football Centre.

Players train one night a week with their allocated squad in their area, with all players required to train and play matches with their current club.

There will be more opportunities throughout the year that MRSC will take up.

A close finish

Sutton Grange trainer Brent Stanley was pleased with the win by consistent galloper Ceardai on the Ballarat synthetic on Friday.

The New Zealand-bred six-year-old was ridden by 3kg claiming apprentice Kiran Quilty in the 2200m BM58 Handicap.

In a tight finish Ceardai beat Blazing Lace by 0.2 lengths, chalking up his third win from 18 starts.

Ceardai is owned by Sona Thoroughbreds, and had been placed at Ballarat and Kyneton at his two previous outings.

GOLF results District golf clubs are hoping the seven-day lockdown to safeguard against the spread of COVID will be lifted this Friday.

With the state-wide lockdown leading to all courses being closed, clubs have lost revenue through their own events being cancelled and green fee players being prohibited from enjoying the many golf venues in this part of Victoria.

Mount Macedon Golf Club had to postpone the final round of its club championship at the weekend.

Just one stroke separates perennial finalists Alex Fraser and Jim Hynes (reigning champ).

They will again go head to head for the honour of being declared the Duncan Beatson Mount Macedon GC champion; several players across the three grades are still in the mix to be handicap winners.

Mark Shepherd won the singles match play final 2up from Phil Thomas, the latter doing well to make it to the starting line and ensuring a competitive match, despite his recent eye injury.

PENNANT DEFERRED The women’s pennant finals in Dalhousie District Golf Association were to have been played yesterday, but have been deferred due to the lockdown.

Romsey and Lancefield will meet at Euroa in the division two final, after the latter survived a very close countback on ‘games one’ to edge out Trentham after the final home and away round of play at Romsey.

Trentham defeated Euroa 3.5 to 1.5, and Broadford had the same margin against Lancefield.

If the lockdown is lifted, the finals are expected to be played next Monday.

High hopes for footy, netball Bill West

Officials, players and supporters in the Bendigo, Maryborough-Castlemaine and Riddell District leagues are hoping that the current seven-day pandemic lockdown is lifted and matches scheduled for this Saturday can go ahead as listed.

All scheduled community football matches were called off last weekend due to the state-wide lockdown.

In the Bendigo League, Castlemaine, Gisborne and Kyneton are all playing at home this Saturday (providing the lockdown is lifted).

Yet to win a senior football game this season, Castlemaine welcomes Golden Square to Camp Reserve, Kyneton takes on unbeaten ladder-leader Sandhurst at the Showgrounds, and third-placed Gisborne will be looking for a percentage booster at Gardiner Reserve against Maryborough.

There are two big drawcard matches in the Riddell League’s Indigenous Round.

Unbeaten Riddell welcomes a fired-up Woodend-Hesket out to build on successive wins, and make stalwart Jesse Sheppard’s 200th game a memorable one.

Macedon and Romsey play at Tony Clarke Reserve in what should prove to be an interesting encounter.

Lancefield will have a chance to chalk up its second win for the season at home to Melton Centrals, and Western Rams is at home to a Diggers Rest side still reflecting on the unceremonious thrashing delivered by Wallan on May 22.

Just how much Woodend-Hesket netballers have improved may be revealed when they tackle the strong Bombers.

In the MCFNL, Trentham footballers will be favoured to retain their unbeaten record when they travel to play Royal Park.

Trentham is in third place on percentage behind the strong Harcourt and Lexton combinations.

Harcourt is at home to Avoca, and Lexton plays Newstead.

The Radio Galahs and Rockatoos battle it out in the last encounter in 2019.

The MAIN Game is an event like no other this side of the Great Divide and returns to Castlemaine on Sunday June 13.

A community engagement and major fundraising initiative for 94.9 MAINfm, the day features a game of Aussie rules footy between the Radio Galahs and the Rockatoos at the historic Camp Reserve.

The teams are made up of MAINfm presenters, local musicians and other respectable members of the community of mixed ages and mixed abilities and this year 50 per cent of the players are women.

MAINfm's manager of sponsorship and events, Sue McLennan, said this year more than ever the event had a real community focus.

“We’re hoping this will help raise awareness and garner interest in the radio station as a lead up to our annual sub-

scriber drive, Radiothon in July,” she said.

Ms McLennan said event goers could expect a seriously fun game of footy alongside some great live and local entertainment.

“We have the Castlemaine Highland Pipe Band, local rockers K5 and dance troupe Lady Fun Times locked in, alongside food stalls, the MAIN Bar and a handball competition.

“The focus really is on having fun this Queen’s Birthday long weekend!”

The MAINfm van will be broadcasting live from the event for those listening at home, with MAINfm’s own entertaining and unique commentary team bringing listeners all the action from on the ground.

A very special event for lovers of Bach, as John O’Donnell gives the first performance of his edition of the original version of Bach’s Art of Fugue. This will be the world première of the original Die Kunst der Fuga.

Prior to his première performance of the original version of The Art of Fugue, John O’Donnell will present a free lecture on the work.

This will be not only a demonstration of the working methods of a musical sleuth but an insight into Bach’s compositional processes as revealed in the fair copy of this work and its subsequent revisions.

The enchanting plucked strings of Ensemble 642 bring to life one of the most groundbreaking periods of musical creation, the seventeenth century in Italy, known as the ‘Seicento’, a truly modern moment in musical history. With the birth of new genres such as the earliest operas and virtuosic instrumental music came new instruments, the arpa doppia (Italian baroque triple harp) and the tiorba or chitarrone (theorbo). Performed only in the exclusive circles of the Italian courts by virtuoso composer/performers such as Castaldi, Kapsberger and Frescobaldi, hear this music in its most intimate duo setting.
