Film director Trevor Graham was eagerly anticipating coming to Castlemaine for this month's screening of his new documentary film as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival.

To his disappointment, the Melbourne-based creative instead finds himself now stranded in Sydney.

But while NSW's current COVID outbreak has put paid to his planned Castlemaine visit, Victoria's own Lockdown Number 6 is not stopping the festival coming to Castlemaine - and far beyond.

In response to the current restrictions uncertainty, festival organisers have responded by changing up the order of the festival program to maximise both in-cinema and online opportunities for its audiences.

"This basically means that the online program (MIFF Play) has been brought forward and will run for the full duration of the festival (August 5 – 22), while the in-cinema screenings will now commence later, happening from August 13 – 22," a publicist told the Midland Express as the fest got going on Thursday.

Trevor Graham's new doco Chef Antonio's Recipes for Revolution features among an enticing lineup of films scheduled to play in-house at Castlemaine's own Theatre Royal as part of the festival.

"I had been scheduled to be in Melbourne right now but because of lockdown here I am in Sydney," Graham told the Express via phone on Friday.

"I love Castlemaine and I had been really looking forward to coming down for a Q&A at the Theatre Royal," the Sydney-stranded film director said.

Chef Antonio's Recipes for Revolution tells an uplifting tale that takes audiences behind the scenes of an Italian hotel-restaurant staffed by youngsters living with Down syndrome.

"It's not just about food but also about how food can be a vehicle for social change," said Graham who worked on making the fly-on-the-wall style doco over three years, spending just over six months in total in Italy's Piedmont region to make the film over seven visits between 2017 and March 2020.

"I think one of the strengths of the film is that I be-

"Some of it is very intimate, some of it is dramatic, and some of it is tragic.

"We left Italy just as it was going into total lockdown."

Besides the at times intense interior world of the kitchen, the film also captures some of the beautiful northern Italian location in which it is set.

And, lockdowns notwithstanding, Graham has a tip for those who do get along and catch Chef Antonio's Recipes for Revolution at the Theatre Royal on August 21.

"Make sure you can eat some Italian food after the film because you will get hungry after watching it!"

The 2021 Melbourne International Film Festival is in online August 5 – 22 and in cinemas August 13 – 22 and Castlemaine figures among the eight regional centres into which the festival has expanded this year.

More than 2000 residents have registered for Macedon Ranges Shire Council's free storm firewood as clean up from the extreme June weather event continues.

Free firewood was announced on July 29 and the council's director of planning and environment, Angela Hughes, said the offering had proved to be "remarkably popular".

"It’s great we can offer this extra support to help supplement heating supplies for local families next winter," she said.

"We are monitoring our call back list and will schedule appointments to help ensure a steady supply of wood is made available."

Ms Hughes said the council would finish giving out its first round of free firewood, one load up to 2m3, to everyone registered before assessing supplies for any extra loads.

"Our processing team is continuously cutting and splitting firewood for this purpose," she said.

"Supply to currently registered residents is expected to take six-10 weeks."

As to whether more free firewood will be made available, this will depend on the demand and best value for the quality of wood and managed accordingly.

Free firewood popular

Don KR fined for spill Charges laid against George Weston Foods Ltd by the Environment Protection Authority Victoria have resulted in a $100,000 boost for a local conservation group.

EPA charged the company after a spill allowed untreated wastewater to flow into a nearby creek on February 19, 2019, at the company’s Don KR Castlemaine facility.

The company told EPA that the discharge of wastewater occurred because there was a failure with their trade waste pumps and associated alarm system, causing a trade waste pit to overflow into stormwater and run undetected into the creek.

George Weston Foods Ltd pleaded guilty in the Castlemaine Magistrates Court on July 30, to two charges of polluting waters of an unnamed tributary of Campbells Creek and for breaching an EPA licence condition.

The company was convicted and ordered to pay $100,000 to the Mount Alexander

Sustainability Group Inc to support the Mount Alexander Regenerative Agriculture Program.

The program is working to increase awareness and adoption of land management practices that improve and protect the condition of soil, biodiversity and vegetation (amongst other agricultural pursuits).

George Weston Foods Ltd was ordered to publicise its offending in the Midland Express, Bendigo Advertiser and Castlemaine Mail newspapers and pay EPA’s costs of $10,000.

The company has also been placed on a two-year undertaking to be of good behaviour.

Contaminated water was removed from the creek as part of the clean-up operation, and George Weston Foods Ltd has since made modifications to the premises to prevent any future spills.

"However, it is well documented that vets are at a higher risk of facing mental health challenges and suicide," she said.

"In essence there is a shortage of vets and an increase in companion and domestic animals.

"The industry is in crisis and a perfect storm is brewing."

Ms Williams has raised the issue with federal member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters, providing the MP with a copy of the paper she's written including a suite of suggestions to help tackle the issue.

"It has gone to Lisa Chesters and I understand that she has passed it on to (deputy Labor leader) Tanya Plibersek," she told the Midland Express.

"It's also gone to the vice chancellor of La Trobe University.

"I want federal traction on it.

"As a first step, what is needed is a supported round table discussion of interested organisations and people who have a role to play in a multi-faceted approach to the challenges facing the industry, the workforce and the domestic and production animals whose lives are ultimately at risk."

Veterinary surgeon Dr Dean Bridgfoot of Castlemaine's Healthy Pets Vet Clinic agreed it was an issue that needed to be addressed.

"It's an issue for sure," Dr Bridgfoot told the Midland Express.

"The Australian Veterinary Association had a paper out recently which found there's a shortfall of 1000-1500 vets in Australia - at least 1000 unfilled jobs in Australia.

"We're super busy during the day and exhausted at night and we just can't do oncall all the time because we don't have the numbers.

"We do have an excellent young vet working with us at the moment but we could definitely put another vet on full time if we could. But we can't get anyone.

"Sometimes locums are available but you can't just get them at the drop of a hat.

"It makes it very stressful for the vets who are working very long hours.

"Structurally, there's a heap of things we probably need to do as a society.

"A re-evaluation of how we support jobs that are seen to be really important in our society would be a good place to start."

Reconsidering the cost of educating vets - something that's leaving newly graduated vets with big loans to repay, while struggling to secure affordable accommodation, could well be useful aspects of such a "re-evaluation", Dr Bridgfoot suggested.

Back at the Castlemaine Veterinary Clinic, veterinary surgeon Dr Yvette Berkeley said the would put on two more vets straight away if they could.

Another option she would like to see become feasible would be sub-letting their clinic out to an after-hours veterinary services provider between the hours of 5pm and 9am.

"That's what we'd love to do," Dr Berkeley said.

"It's one solution and we've advertised it in the past but the problem is no one wants to work those hours.

"It's a real crisis.

"We've just had to stop our after-hours altogether."

Ms Williams said regional and rural vets had plenty of ideas to help tackle the crisis.

"However we don’t have the resources or capacity to advocate or respond without assistance," she said.

Church sale back on table

Mount Alexander Shire Council is again advising the community of its proposal to sell a former church in Chewton.

The former Wesleyan Church building, located at 205 Main Road, was built in the 1850s.

The building is in a poor state of repair and was declared unsafe to use in late 2010.

Council resolved to sell the former church building and associated land in August 2017.

The subdivision of land has been completed, but given the passage of time and to ensure best practice by council, a fresh public notice is currently being advertised informing the community of its intention to sell the property.

As part of this process, council will consider any submissions received at a future meeting of council.

An open day will be held on Saturday August 28 from 10am to 1pm at the former church to allow interested parties to safely view the building and its interiors.

Community members will have restricted access to the former church building to see inside. Bookings are essential.

Delighted and surprised is the way Castlemaine writer Alex Miller has described seeing his debut work of non-fiction shortlisted for the National Biography Awards.

Late last week Miller, already much celebrated and awarded for his fictional works, learnt that his first published nonfiction book, Max, had been shortlisted for the prestigious awards, which, with a prize pool of $42,000 are the nation’s richest for biographical writing and memoir.

"It was most unexpected because the book was so far from being a conventional biography," Miller told the Express.

"Really delighted, deeply honoured and surprised because Max is my only work of non-fiction."

Miller is the award-winning author of 12 novels and a collection of essays and stories but with Max he took a step into new territory, paying homage to Max Blatt, a Polish Jew and union organiser who opposed Hitler’s National Socialism, was imprisoned and tortured, before escaping after World War II to China and finally Australia.

In shortlisting the work, the judges

commented that "the book is a testament to friendship — or perhaps to love — as much as a formal biography.

"The writing is contemplative, moving and engaged, and of the standard one would expect of a writer of Miller’s stature," they wrote.

Max has been shortlisted alongside Emily Clements' The Lotus Eaters, Andrew Kwong's One Bright Moon, Cassandra Pybus's Truganini, Archie Roach's Tell Me Why and Margaret Simons' Penny Wong: Passion and Principle.

Miller told the Express that since the publication of Max last August, he had since been busy working on another book.

He said the result, entitled The Brief Affair of Doctor Frances Egan, was now scheduled for publication in the latter half of next year.

"It was inspired by visits to the Victoria University where my wife, Stephanie, was working," he said.

"I have returned to my first love of fiction writing."

The Castlemaine writer will now have to wait until later this month to discover how Max ultimately fares in the National Biography Awards 2021.

Newham Primary School's nature nurturers have won the Woolworths Junior Landcare Team Award in the 2021 National Landcare Awards.

The award recognises the school's work on indigenous vegetation along a tributary of Deep Creek that abuts the school, creating a nature corridor for local wildlife that connects with the Cobaw Biolink.

The school community also designed and built a wetland to provide an alternative breeding ground for frogs, which 10 southern brown tree frogs now call home.

“There are so many people from the Newham Primary School community who have contributed time, expertise and hard work over many years," science teacher Russel Dyer said.

"Staff, students, parents and community members have all been involved, and it’s wonderful to have their efforts recognised. Hopefully the award will be inspiration to get even more people active in this important work in our community."

ABC presenter Costa Georgiadis hosted an online awards night last week that celebrated 75 nominees in 11 categories.

Victoria’s Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio congratulated the school on its victory.

Rebates on offer

Hannah Cooper is using her music to start important conversations.

Her beautiful but haunting debut, The Fire Song, comes with a message about summer fire danger and climate change.

Hannah penned the song in January last year following the horrendous Black Summer bushfires.

Its release in February this year served a reminder that many Australians were still recovering and rebuilding from fire destruction.

“It’s also a call to action on climate change to prevent disasters like this,” Hannah told the Express.

Her mother Louise works in disaster recovery, which has shown Hannah how much work goes into the community recovery process.

Macedon Ranges residents know too well the threats that come with every summer.

“I have memories of extreme fire danger days,” Hannah said. “Around the table as a family, we listened to the radio with the car packed, ready to go if need be.

“Fire has definitely become more and more prevalent in recent summers. I think it just goes to show how immediate our climate change action needs to be.”

Hannah wrote, recorded and produced the track from her bedroom studio in Woodend. But she has others to thank too.

Her brother Ben contributed a saxophone section. Paul Fox, another Woodend local, from Indie Masters, mixed and

mastered the song.

More recently, Hannah released the music video she created with her St Ambrose Primary School friend Emma Fitzgibbon.

Hannah said the video was filmed at her home in Woodend and incorporates her love of storytelling through art and scenic shots.

“It’s been such a lovely experience to finally share one of my creations with others and hearing how they’ve connected with it,” she said.

Hannah comes from a musical family and began her connection to music from a young age.

She takes inspiration from many different artists including Nina Simone and Amy Winehouse.

“I love Jazz and R&B/Soul music, and that’s the direction I’m currently exploring in my song writing,” she said.

Hannah graduated from Sacred Heart College in 2019. She is currently undertaking a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in literature and Indigenous studies, at Melbourne University.

She is also taking on music writing and production electives, keen to learn more about the industry.

She continues to make music as she studies and is working towards releasing an album.

Hannah will be opening the next Macedon Ranges Music Festival in Gisborne.

Fires inspire

Low-income earners can access state government support to upgrade their inefficient heating and cooling systems.

Solar Victoria will begin providing $1000 rebates to support eligible low-income households to replace their old heaters with energy-efficient reverse-cycle systems.

An additional $200 rebate is available to cap old gas heaters, and households can get $500 to upgrade their electrical switchboard.

The move is part of the state’s $335 million Home Heating and Cooling Upgrade program which opened to community housing organisations in May. Replacing outdated, unsafe or inefficient electric, gas and wood-fired heaters, is expected to improve the cost of living and liveability across the state, while building climate resilience.

A trial neighbourhood solution to reducing organics in landfill will be expanded thanks to a $60,000 grant from the Victorian Government’s Recycling Communities Fund.

The YIMBY (Yes in My Backyard) model, run by The Hub Foundation in Castlemaine, aims to connect people through small hubs, nurtured by a small team of community composters.

The community composters are being supported by Joel Meadows of the Green Hand Institute and Bill Grant, local compost experts.

High-quality compost, connected communities and reduced methane emissions from landfill are the three pillars of YIMBY. The first round of YIMBY is just getting under way in three neighbourhoods, supported by a Mount Alexander Shire Community Grant.

What is learned in this early phase will be applied to the expanded trial, which will include an extra 10 neighbourhood hubs.

"It’s an incredibly simple model, one composter will collect a weekly bucket (pictured) from 10 participating households, add straw or other woody materials, monitor, turn and voilà, yummy compost," Mr Meadows said.

"The aggregation of this amount of ‘organics’ means the compost pile can get nice and hot and with careful attention, produce high-quality compost, contributing to the food growing capacity of the neighbourhood."

This model is not intended to replace the role of keen composters, or chook feeders, rather provide a solution for those who currently put organics into the rubbish bin, for a whole host of reasons. It aims to be simple, free and user friendly.

The Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival is again calling for entries into its popular scarecrow competition this year to display in home gardens, businesses in the community.

Seven Macedon Ranges businesswomen have been named finalists in the 2021 AusMumpreneur Awards.

The Women's Business School awards celebrate Australian mums in business achieving outstanding success.

Two of those are Gisborne's Carmen Hofman, an Emerging Entrepreneur title hopeful, and Katrina Buttigieg, who is vying for Creative Entrepreneur and Author/Writer.

Katrina is a writer and proud mum of three, and in 2018, decided to turn her passion for writing into a lifestyle.

She left her job as a teacher and founded Macedon Ranges Writers, a content and copywriting business that focuses on supporting local businesses.

In 2019, Katrina also launched Macedon Ranges Mumma: a blog promoting family fun ideas in the region, including the best playgrounds, walks, markets and kidfriendly cafes.

Since then, her project has expanded to include: a regular column in the Gisborne Gazette; meet ups to give people the opportunity to connect; and a shop local initiative.

Through both her copywriting and blogging work, Katrina enjoys having flexible hours around her family and being able to write for and endorse her local community.

“As mums, I think we can get so used to serving our family that it is easy to forget that our own dreams are still worthy,” she said.

“I absolutely love running my own business because I can do what I love, have the flexibility to be available for my kids when they need me, and can also invest time in my own health and wellbeing.”

Fellow Gisborne entrepreneur Carmen Hofman shares a similar work-life balance as her new business Oakfield Designs thrives.

The 40-year-old mother of two creates stunning and unique epoxy river tables, as well as grazing boards, coasters and other homewares.

Mary talks to: John Cole Hello, Mary here from The Garden Tap Nursery.

Each month I will be doing a profile of someone in the region, either an avid or professional gardener, along with tips for the upcoming month in the garden.

John Cole and his wife Judith arrived in the region in 1976, moving from the Mornington Peninsula. He started here by working two weeks a year at the famous Bolobek gardens.

Lady Law-Smith hired him to deal with the poplar rust in the entrance avenue.

He lived with the family while working there and Lady Law-Smith encouraged John to move to the area. They took him to a place they called ‘the potato patch’, and coming over the rise and viewing the valley, he knew he had found home!

Going back to Tyabb, he jumped on his trusty push bike and rode to the general store.

He bought The Age, and there was his dream listed in the real estate section. ‘Kerrie’ was born.

John and Judith sold up and moved. They designed and built their house, and most importantly, planted a wind break of 90 river birches, which if he had his time again he said he would plant Chamaechcyapriss (aka false cypress).

In his beautiful garden, you will find magnificent lindens, hormbeams, beeches and zelkova trees.

“The zelkova was slow to start, but worth the wait.” he says. “Also, it is not affected by the dutch elm beetle.”

Horticultural blood runs strong in John's veins. In fact, his great uncles arrived here in 1842, along with seed stock from Harrow-on-the-Hill, Middlesex, England. He told the family to come on over, and they established a nursery on the Merrie Creek at Preston. John’s father later had a nursery on Gardiners Creek near Toorak.

Now retired you can see John at farmers markets with his sweet corn, asparagus and even oranges.

- Open up trees by removing dead wood. Look for fractured trees, some can be repaired, ask an expert though.

- It’s your last chance to get bare-rooted trees into your space. Fruit trees like apples, pears, plums, peaches, and nectarines can be planted now, as well as deciduous exotic trees.

- Pruning and weeding is a high priority job at this time of year. Deciduous fruit trees love a big old haircut now.

- Take this time to prepare your garden beds for tomatoes if you’re planning on getting those into the ground next month. You can try organic compost, pelletised chook poo, some water, and straw mulch.

- It’s a great time to top up mulch in your veggie patches, herb gardens and ornamental beds.

Is your lawn spring ready?

This winter seems to have been exceptionally long and unbelievably wet, but before you know it, spring will take over and there will be plenty of opportunity to get out in the garden, enjoying some fresh air and maybe even have a Sunday picnic on the lawn.

And speaking of lawn ... if your neighbour's grass always seems to be greener on the other side of the fence, here are some tips to get yours looking its lush best.

There are three options for growing your perfect patch of green this spring. All need the same preparation, and all will give you a result depending on your patience. * Firstly, remove all your existing vegetation or spray with a weed killer. The folk at Reform Landscaping use a weed killer called Slasher that is bee friendly, works very quickly and doesn’t leave a residue. * Secondly, turn the soil over with a fork or a rotary hoe. This is a great opportunity to add some gypsum to help break up some of that legendary black pug soil (especially if you live in the Macedon Ranges!). You are aiming for the soil to be friable (landscape speak for crumbly). Rake your now lovely soil, and remove any roots, stones or debris. * Thirdly, spread 25mm to 50mm of sandy loam soil over your existing soil. Firstly, spread with a rake then use a lawn level or screed to level off. * Lastly, spread a granular lawn fertiliser evenly at a rate specified.

Now you’re ready for grass.

There are three options for getting your lawn going.

The cheapest is with seed. This can be done with a handheld, trolley, or towable spreader.

Ensure that you are spreading at the recommended rate advised by the supplier. Too much seed won’t improve the result. Water in, keep moist and literally watch the garden grow. Your lawn will establish in between four to eight weeks.

The second cost-effective option is to use a contractor to hydroseed your lawn. This is where seed, fertiliser, water and a paper mâché type material are sprayed onto the soil.

This method is great for covering large areas. Once applied, allow to dry then water like your seed.

The highest cost option is instant turf, but it gives you (you guessed it) instant results!

Instant Turf comes in single species varieties from the big growers. Reform Landscaping has their own specially grown blend of rye and fine fescue that delivers a tough but fine leaf, frost-tolerant lawn.

Kikuyu - Pros Fast growing and drought tolerant.

Cons Goes dormant in winter. Grows through runners so difficult to control.

What to consider when landscaping August is a great time for planning when it comes to the garden. Making our homes as comfortable as possible and allowing for a peaceful garden escape is a thought for many as coronavirus means spending more time at home.

Whether you're planning your own space or are seeking expert advice, here are some things you may wish to consider for your outdoor and garden space.

1. Needs and wants It's great make a list of needs and want for your outdoor space. Do you want a vegetable garden? Do need a play space for the kids? Do you want a large tree for shade? Having a list will help to narrow down the vast range of options.

2. Location Consider the sun and wind patterns of your garden. Perhaps you want a seated area in the sun and sheltered from wind, or have plants in mind that prefer the shade. It might sound obvious, but placement is important and can be costly to change if you don't get it right.

3. Find areas you love If you take some time to live in your outdoor space you may begin to notice there are areas that you prefer to be. Many factors may come into this, it could be that a neighbour's existing hedging provides privacy or maybe there are locations nearby windows and indoor spaces to consider.

4. Go at your own pace One important thing to remember is that it's okay to go slow. Maybe you want to start with a small area of garden beds, or just planting that one tree. Don't feel as though the entire space needs to be filled right away, but do consider that if you are using younger plants, they will take some time to grow and achieve your desired look and feel.

Solar S olar rrebate ebate update update Through the MASH bulk-buy program, we are finding that more than 90 per cent of residential customers are taking advantage of the solar and battery rebates available from the Victorian Government’s Solar Homes Program.

The fact that the eligibility criteria are quite broad means that the majority of households who don’t already have solar panels on their roof can apply. That goes for rental properties too. With the solar panels rebate currently worth up to $1400, that’s a decent incentive and certainly helps reduce the upfront cost.

We’re also finding that lots of people are taking up the Victorian Government’s interest-free loan when they purchase solar panels. It’s for the same amount as the solar panels rebate. It’s a great offer and, like the rebate, helps cut the cost of solar.

The Solar Homes program also offers battery rebates for homeowners and there are about 800 left at the value of $4174. When these go, this rebate will drop to $3500 – a bit lower, but still worth having.

A relatively new rebate is the solar panels rebate for small businesses – worth up to $3500. Once the current allocation runs out (there are 2193 remaining), this will drop to $1750.

This is a terrific incentive for businesses to go solar. It includes those who lease their premises as well as those who own them. You need to have between one and 19 staff on payroll and the premises must be for business only (i.e. not your home).

“Your pet needs a dental” – chances are as a pet owner you will hear this at some stage during your pet’s life. What does this actually mean? Periodontal disease affects more than 85 per cent of dogs and more than 50 per cent of cats more than four years of age.

There is a lot that owners can do to prevent the development of plaque and calculus such as tooth brushing, feeding dental-specific kibble or treats, specialised chews, or water and food additives.

However, once periodontal disease develops the only way to address this is with a dental procedure, which must be performed under anaesthetic. While this may sound scary, it is actually the safest and only way to effectively clean the teeth beneath the gum line. And the earlier dental disease is dealt with, the more animals can avoid prolonged anaesthesia and tooth extractions, especially in older pets.

During an oral exam, your treating vet will assess not only the teeth, but also the gums, cheeks and tongue.

Your vet may suggest a dental procedure that involves having your pet go under a general anaesthetic. This allows a more thorough examination of the mouth and attend to any issues. Assessing your pet’s oral cavity while asleep may also include radiography to examine what is happening underneath the gum line. The dental procedure will include removal of plaque and tartar by an ultrasonic probe and smoothing of any micro-abrasions on the teeth.

After a dental, your vet or nurse will discuss a treatment plan for ongoing oral healthcare. This may include adding a dental food into the diet, oral rinses or water additives to help fight plaque, maintain oral health and freshen breath, brushing your pet’s teeth is also an option. This is not a task suited to everybody and can take some time to get used to for both human and companion. Treats and dental chews can also be used, although not the most effective preventative measure, it is a very easy option.

Macedon Ranges Shire's composting method doesn't sound so good Steve Geddes ('Make compost, not gas and oil', Opinions, August 3) "turned regularly to prevent the build up of methane". That means the methane in the compost is released into our atmosphere. Not good.

There is no oil or gas produced, solvents used to create something similar to diesel at the proposed bioenergy facility at Don KR. The kerbside waste, to my understanding, will be green waste only. There will be no plastic used as a fuel in the facility.

Separated at the kerbside I assume means householders separating into the appropriate bins.

It's hard to comprehend "burning" something without a chimney but certainly the process of making biochar doesn't need one. When done correctly there is no smoke.

I have read the number of trucks to and from will either be the same as now or a slight increase.

Mount Alexander Sustainability Group has contacted the immediate community around Don KR first to have discussion about the proposal and now has organised a town hall meeting for the whole community. I have seen a few articles about this in the local papers over the years.

I'm concerned about trucks and noise but also that Don KR imports the meat it processes. It'd be good to lobby the government etc on that one. Why not Australian meat?

But, Don KR is there so why not make a positive out of it and cut emissions for the shire as best we can?

The project brings up a broader, farreaching question. Is it understood the impact our current lifestyle is having on Earth? The idea prompts additional inquiry.

Not only is there urgent need to reduce our carbon imprint, there is dire need to reduce our imprint and impact on Mother Earth. The need for faster phone and internet services, electric cars, fancier (bigger) houses, whatever else it is, all requires of Earth more digging up or digging into, greater call for water, etc. Also, while the use of solar energy, going green-renewables policy is not carbon based, the policy is leading (has led) to an even greater demand on Earth's resources.

Rare minerals, silver, lithium - extremely toxic and gathered by child labour; copper, graphite, glass, lead, cobalt, each takes a bite out of forests and other ecosystems, poisons water tables, and generates vast amounts of toxic waste. Each generates untold social misery in accompaniment with the ecological misery.

Has sufficient research been done into the actual impact on Mother Earth in order to sustain our way of living even with our going green?

I am not against renewables/going green policy per se. I pose legitimate questions that require us all to take a step back and deeply look into our human imprint on Earth who is a living, sacred being, just as we are.

Mr Loh says that most people the ATO contacts about their rental deductions are able to justify their claims. However, there are instances where the ATO has to knock back claims where taxpayers didn’t keep receipts, claimed for personal use, or claimed for ineligible deductions.

"We often reject claims for interest charges on personal loan amounts and immediate claims for the full amount for capital works (for example, a kitchen renovation), so it is vital that you have good records," he says.

If you take out a loan to buy a rental property and rent it out at market rates, the interest on that loan is deductible.

However, if you redraw money from that mortgage for personal use, such as buying a boat, or going on a holiday, you can’t claim the interest on that part of the loan.

"We also see taxpayers claiming capital works as a lump sum rather than spreading the cost over a number of years.

Capital works include a new building or an extension, renovations or structural improvements.

"The cost of repairs for wear and tear to the property are deductible immediately if they are to replace or fix existing items, such as curtains, without upgrading them.

However, improvements or capital expenses, such as a kitchen renovation are not deductible immediately," Mr Loh says.

The ATO has advice, guidance, and an online tool on its website to help taxpayers make these calculations. Taxpayers can also speak to a registered tax agent.

Property investors must beware of common tax traps that can delay refunds or lead to an audit costing taxpayers time and money, the Australian Taxation Office is reminding.

In 2019-20, more than 1.8 million Australians owned rental properties and claimed $38 billion in deductions.

Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh says the most common mistake rental property and holiday homeowners make is neglecting to declare all their income. This includes failing to declare any capital gains from selling an investment property.

"To put it simply, you should expect tax consequences for any property that you earn income from that isn’t your main residence," Mr Loh says.

"We are expanding the rental income data we receive directly from thirdparty sources such as sharing economy platforms, rental bond authorities, and property managers.

"We will contact taxpayers about income they’ve received but haven’t included in their tax return. This will mean they need to repay some of their refund.

"The ATO often allows taxpayers who have made genuine errors to amend their returns without penalty. But deliberate attempts to avoid tax on rental income will see the ATO take action.

"People should remember that there’s no such thing as free real estate when it comes to their tax returns. Our data analytics scrutinise returns for rental deductions that seem unusually high. We will ask questions, and this may lead to a delay in processing your return.

"So far we have adjusted more than 70

Industry Super Australia analysis of tax file data shows that more women than men will receive the July 1 super boost – 3.41 million women compared with 3.36 million men.

The increase to 12 per cent will also: • Add $170,000 to the retirement nest egg of the average 30-year-old couple; • Save $33 billion in Age Pension costs over coming decades; • Inoculate retirees from future adverse changes to the Age Pension; • Add $12 billion to Australia’s GDP, create 10,000 jobs and increase real wages, according to research from independent consultants ACIL Allen.

The Superannuation Guarantee is a critical response to the ageing population and improves retirement incomes of working people in a fiscally sustainable manner.

Although still maturing, annual superannuation retirement benefit payments are already double age pension expenditures.

Don’t bet against the house

More than 6.7 million Australians are benefiting from a boost to their nest egg as the super rate increases to 10 per cent.

Young workers and low-to-middle income earners are the big winners, as an extra $233 a year begins to flow into the super accounts of the average worker from July 1.

This super boost may be small, but it will make a big difference at retirement – with a 30-year-old on the median wage expected to have an extra $19,000 at retirement, a couple will have an extra $38,000.

In total Australians will get an extra $1.5 billion paid in super in the next 12 months.

Add up Super Australia chief executive Bernie Dean says that even though the increases are only small now, they’ll add up to make a huge positive difference for millions of Australians when they retire.

“These increases will give women more financial independence and that means a better shot at a dignified life in retirement, not one marked by poverty,” Mr Deans says.

“Young people will be the big winners from these increases and it will help those who raided their super last year, during the downturn, make up some of the lost ground.

“This is the first of a number of increases the government has promised and locked in law for the coming few years.”

Half of the extra super payments – about $784 million – will go to those under 40, and more people in their 20s will get a super boost than any other age bracket. The extra contributions will help young workers recoup the savings they

Local olives – taste the difference Kyneton Farmers Market is lucky to have three local olive producers, Axedale Olives, Barfold Olives and Olives Olives.

Fire, floods, hungry horses and chocolate are all part of the stories of where they are at today.

Like their olive groves they are resillient, resourceful and generous family run businesses.

AXEDALE OLIVES George Mistriotis was born in Kalamata, Greece, famous for its black olives! He worked for the Cadbury the chocolate maker for 25 years. Although not a chocolate fan, he develo oped a strong knowledge of food hygiene and processing practiices.

Twenty-two years ago, George and his wife Haroula bought land in Axedale, near Bendigo, and planted 1500 olive trees. The varieties frantoia, cerignola and the champion Greek variety koroneiki for oil production and jumbo, kalamata and manzanillo for table olives.

In 2011 they lost about 300 trees due to floods. Today they make three single-variety, estate-grown oils and triolet – George’s secret blend of all three. They hand pick table olives and use a natural brine curing method. George and Haroula do most of the hand picking themselves!

OLIVES OLIVES Olive’s Olives was established in 2008 by Rob Pearce and is a family run business. The 300-tree grove is located just 10 minutes north of Kyneton.

Rob calls himself the “Accidental Olive Grower”! Pasture for the horses was the real reason for his escape to the country!

Rob heard about an olive grove that was being ripped out due to hungry horses destroying the trees. The idea of free olive trees seemed irresistible! Inexperience meant he had no idea how much work was involved in digging up 100 trees by hand and was prepared to give it a go! The 2009 fire was an early setback and caused damage to trees and took out the processing shed.

The first commercial harvest was in 2016 and in that year Rob’s passion for olives took him to Italy to learn olive pruning techniques.

Time and natural techniques are the key to his ‘Sicilian Method’ of pickling olives in brine, a process that takes up to 12 months. Rob uses a mechanical rake to hand harvest, which avoids bruising the olives. He also produces olive paste and extra virgin olive oil.

BARFOLD OLIVES Barfold Olives is also located just north of Kyneton. The Brajevic family started planting olives in 1999. By the end of 2001, approx. 2200 table and oil varieties were planted. For the 2006 harvest, they installed a Rapanelli processing machine with a capacity of 400kg per hour. This machine gave them the capacity to press oil for other small-tomedium olive growers like Rob Pearce from Olives Olives. This has provided an income stream – as well as a lot of like-minded friends!

Incredible courage and resilience got this family through when they lost nearly everything in the Black Saturday 2009 fires. Homes, workshops, processing facilities, equipment, cars and tractors were devastated. The olive trees and fruit were scorched too. Friends, local people and people they had never met before volunteered to restore the irrigation system so that damaged trees could be watered. Olive trees showed just how tough they could be and in 2011 they produced a small harvest!

Post-fire investment in an even bigger Rapanelli processing plant now gives them the capacity to handle batches as small as 200kg through to continuous operation at between 600 to 750 kg/hr (Approximately six tonne per day). Harvest is made easier by having their own self-propelled tree shaker and an in-house processing facility to minimise time between harvest and processing.

Barfold produces early and late harvest varieties of extra virgin olive oil. They also have an infused oil range with flavours including lemon myrtle, basil and garlic. Their table olives are hand harvested and pickled in brine for a minimum of eight months.

The families behind Axedale, Barfold and Olives Olives know that time and natural methods are the key to highquality table olives and oil.

No chemical treatments are used to change the colour of olives or to speed up the curing process from months to weeks! Each family has specialised knowledge gained from hard work and a hands-on approach.

Mistaken identity deadly Central Victorian locals are encouraged to identify furry home visitors before using lethal control like baits and traps.

Many native species are often mistaken for house mice and black rats.

Some of the species that could be confused on first sight include yellow-footed antechinus, dunnarts, brush-tailed phascogales and water rats.

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning senior wildlife management officer Leila Brook said there were some easy ways to tell the protected species apart from their non-native lookalikes.

“Introduced black rats have a tail that is clearly longer than their combined head and body length, while native rodents mostly have shorter tails, roughly equal to the head-body length," Ms Brook said.

“Native antechinus have a cone-shaped face and a ‘crimp’ in their ear, phascogales have a black brush-like tail, rather than the scaly tail of rats and mice. Dunnarts are mouse-sized, have very big eyes and ears and long, narrow hindfeet and water rats are relatively large, usually with a white-tipped tail."

Ms Brook said people should remove access to food sources and shelter around their home to prevent black rats and mice.

They can also block holes and seal gaps around doors and windows.

“It is important for people to understand that some of our native, predatory birds, such as owls and kites, also naturally help to control rodent populations," she said.

“It’s a natural part of the food and life cycle for these birds to eat rats and mice, so we need to be aware that our own efforts to control rodents can inadvertently have negative impacts on these species as well."

Ms Brook said some baiting products, called second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides, took longer to break down, so if native predators ate sick rats or mice, they could get poisoned themselves. Preferred first-generation anticoagulant rodenticides are available and are less likely to poison predatory animals as they break down more quickly.

Those using products are asked to always read and follow directions on the label to ensure it is appropriate for their situation and used in the safe manner.

The updated plan builds on the work outlined in the 2015 Environmental Management Plan and the 2018 Hanging Rock Strategic Plan, which gives priority to protecting and enhancing the site’s environmental and Aboriginal cultural heritage values. The updated Hanging Rock Environmental Management Plan is open for feedback until 23 August.

Kyneton family’s heartfelt thanks

The Ferguson family from Kyneton has marked National Stroke Week (August 2-8) by thanking the health professionals who saved their daughter’s life.

Chloe was just 11 years old when she experienced a stroke in May last year.

Chloe’s father George said she had been fine all day, but suddenly suffered a severe headache and began to scream in pain.

“On top of the headache, Chloe started vomiting and then her legs wouldn’t hold her up. She complained about being dizzy and unable to see,” George said.

“An ambulance took Chloe to the Royal Children’s Hospital with sirens blaring.

Four hours after her first symptom, she had an operation to stop the bleed in her brain and spent the next five days in a medically induced coma.”

Chloe is one of about 600 children in Australia who experience a stroke each year.

Chloe is making gains in her recovery and has gradually returned to school, but still experiences cognitive and processing challenges and issues with her sight.

Fox-free zone Patrick Francis, Romsey Your recent article about the danger of 1080 baits for domestic dogs was important to highlight an escalating problem in Macedon Ranges Shire ('Fox bait fears', Midland Express, July 13).

There is a fox population explosion across the shire and their impact as the state’s principle wildlife predator is becoming worse.

That’s because the shire’s landowners are increasingly shifting from farming to rural lifestyle (MRSC survey 2019). And foxes are not recognised by most lifestyle landholders as a problem.

But some landholders who participate in Land for Wildlife and other revegetation programs to encourage wildlife back to their properties know that foxes are keeping a cap on populations of small birds, reptiles, frogs and marsupials.

These landowners should not have to lay baits to protect wildlife if all landowners and the shire council took fox wildlife predation seriously.

This is a community issue which all landowners can help to solve, one group cannot do it on its own.

There are solutions.

Firstly ensure all landowners eradicate harbour for foxes by removing vegetation like gorse and blackberry.

Secondly, fill in or block off fox dens.

Thirdly, ensure all landowners implement rabbit control. Fourthly, ask council to lobby VicRoads to introduce 40 – 50km maximum speed limit on minor service roads in a 5km radius of our shire towns.

Wildlife roadkill from speed should be unacceptable to the community and it has a sinister secondary impact. The current default 100km speed limit means wildlife are being constantly killed and become an additional and regular food source for foxes.

Even more distressing is injured kangaroos being slowly eaten alive by foxes.

The shire needs to take action and implement an ongoing plan for a 5km radius fox-free zone around each town so the danger of 1080 baits is removed for dog owners as landowners within the zone don’t need to use them.

Re. Bill Grant's letter last week (‘Questions welcome’, Opinions, August 3).

The proposed biodigester (mechanical stomach) is based on a model being currently operated by Richgrow in Jandakot, Perth.

It is very sensitive to the wrong ingredients and only performs with a strict diet of freshly chopped fruit and vegetables, stale bread and pastries sourced from specific businesses. Only a very small amount of finely selected fish is added, as larger fish bones block pipes and damage shredding equipment.

Mount Alexander Bioenergy’s digester is somehow going to perform on whatever you (the residents) decide to put in your council supplied organic (food) bins plus DonKR’s meaty wash-down water mixed with copious amounts of contaminated pork. Hardly the required balanced diet. Garbage guts for Castlemaine and carefully selected pescatarian diet for Perth?

Maybe that is why only a couple of months ago it was reluctantly announced

by MAB, that Castlemaine was going to get a biomass (combustion) plant as well!

This would deal with all of the troublesome ingredients, like Don KR’s quarantined industrial plastic liners, soiled cardboard and contaminated pork. In Australia toxic and quarantined materials are incinerated above 1000°C. Is MAB hoping to get a licence to eliminate them at under 850°C? What goes in must come out.

I agree, that for the long-term benefits of perpetual human existence it is important

to reduce landfill. If a properly managed biodigester was set up near a gas main in an area with very few residents, it could add to our natural gas supply and reduce methane in the atmosphere. In contrast, MAB’s insensitive proposal to impose two dysfunctional gas plants smack in town is a kick in the guts for Castlemaine and more about ensuring perpetual funding for MASG. If Canberra’s ACT government can ban biomass, then so too can Mount Alexander Shire Council!

Resident, Kyneton An open letter to Macedon Ranges Shire Council: I am writing to communicate my surprise at receiving another bin without notice and more importantly being told I am to pay for it.

Farmers do not need green bins. Nor do they want to pay for them. Especially without consultation.

It’s commendable to encourage town residents to be environmentally responsible with their rubbish however farmers have been doing that for years with bonfires and chickens.

I ask you to consider your reaction if a supermarket employee placed an item you did not require into your trolley and told you you not only needed it but that the amount it cost would be added to your cart.

I am guessing you would be outraged.

I am.

On calling the council, I was told me that you would come and get the unwanted bin, however I would still be charged for it.

I want to know what you are going to do to fix this issue.

I suggest you send everyone you have forced to take on the new bin, and charged them for it, to decide whether or not they want it and amend their rates accordingly.

A secure energy future Paul Ruff, Kyneton Kyneton’s electricity supply comes from the Keilor terminal station.

Published intent dictates that in the event of another fire south of Kyneton, e.g. Macedon, supply would be cut off to all residents and businesses north of the fire.

Solar rooftop PV will also be cut off as most have been installed with old technology inverters. Only new technology inverters, with battery backup, allow the household/ business to continue to use their own generated PV power when the network supply is interrupted.

Because there is limited connection between the Kyneton and Castlemaine powerlines (Castlemaine is supplied from powerlines from Bendigo), we cannot rely on supply from the north. If this was upgraded we'd have more secure supply.

The power supply around Melbourne is designed on the ring main system, this ensures that interruptions and outages can be bypassed by routing power via a different path.

Ballarat new wind solutions have been well backed by banks and other entrepreneurs. Like the farmers allowing phone towers, the farmers with wind farms are now enjoying regular financial injections.

The future security of the Kyneton power supply requires consideration, planning, finance and development, but may be more successfully developed by a Community Energy Company.

I invite readers to come together to establish a force to move this solution forward.

Based on your response to this I propose to call a meeting to hear from the leaders of; Powercor, Enova, Hepburn Wind and other community energy organisations, and to secure support to develop Kyneton/Macedon Ranges Energy and a secure energy future for our residents and local businesses.

Tales of intrigue and love

Romsey author Sarah Fiddelaers has penned a tale of drama and romance in her second collaboration.

A Season in Paris is the story of one Paris shop, four women and four decades of intrigue from the authors behind Easter Promises in 2020.

The four strong heroines face injustice, keeping secrets, falling in love and fighting Nazis.

The collaboration showcases Fiddelaers’ story The Secret Artist of Paris as well as stories by three other authors, including The Lady Detective author, Ava January.

“We wanted to write something to lighten the grey skies of winter, and distract from all the uncertainty in the world at the moment,” Fiddelaers said.

“Since we can’t travel overseas at the moment, we decided to invite readers into the Parisian shop through the collection of stories.”

The stories told in this anthology are diverse in time and setting. From the Belle Epoch to WWII, the four stories cover the first four decades of the 20th century, and each story is set in a different season.

The Secret Artist of Paris centres on Genevieve, the only daughter of a mad and cruel artist, who is forbidden to paint and fall in love. Her life becomes complicated when she meets Sebastian on a secret painting trip.

“What I’ve loved about working with my co-authors is that we all have a deep love of history that we’ve brought to the page in such different ways,” Fiddelaers said.

“There’s a story of a poor French girl with big dreams, an English socialite with a tragic secret, a passionate artist with a mad mother, and a fiery secret agent trying not to fall in love with her assignment.”

Fiddelaers said she and her co-authors had enjoyed the success of their first anthology, Easter

Promises so much that they signed up for their second anthology project at the end of last year.

“I can’t wait for readers to fall in love with these stories and immerse themselves in the history, humour, hope, and love that fill A Season in Paris,” she said.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council's Environment Strategy is now open for community feedback.

The updated strategy outlines the council’s commitment to acting on climate change and sets out priorities for creating a more sustainable shire.

The previous strategy was adopted in 2016 and since that time, the council has delivered most of the strategy’s actions such as preparation of a Biodiversity Strategy, Climate Change Action Plan and Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy.

Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson, said the council was proud of what had been achieved so far and was looking for community feedback as it planned for the future.

“The vision and key principles from the original strategy have been retained, and the updated strategy responds to a range of emerging priorities identified by the community,” she said.

“The updated Environment Strategy also aligns with the council’s recent declaration of a climate emergency; the development

of technologies in the energy sector; and changes at a state and national level to legislation and environmental priorities."

The new suite of emerging priorities highlighted in the updated strategy include: responding to the climate emergency, sustainable transport, waterway health, biolinks and habitat links, private land conservation, waste minimisation, community engagement and partnerships.

The draft strategy will be available for public feedback until 5pm on Friday September 10.

Romsey, Lancefield plan A draft Community Climate Change Action Plan for Romsey and Lancefield has been developed following recent consultation with community members.

The draft plan is part of Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s ‘Cool Changes’ program. It outlines many of the existing community based environmental projects underway in Romsey and Lancefield, along with suggestions for future local action.

You can learn more about the draft plan by attending an online information session on Thursday August 19, 7.30pm to 8.30pm. Participants will also explore the potential for forming a local action group to coordinate community activity for sustainability and climate change action.

Cool Changes is an ongoing program funded by the council to support local communities across the shire to develop climate change action plans that are created by, and for, local communities.

Cool Changes showcases the huge range of community projects that together build local resilience, strengthen local social connections, address climate change, and help us live more locally and more sustainably.

Angela Hughes, council's director of planning and environment, encouraged people who live in or around Romsey and Lancefield to provide feedback.

“Developed in consultation with community members, the plan identifies six areas for improvement which are: Caring for country; Food, health and wellbeing; Sustainable energy; Sustainable transport; Better homes and buildings; Waste minimisation, recycling and the circular economy,” she said.

“It also includes projects that are happening now, new and emerging projects, and some ideas for the future."

The Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League has advised member clubs of possible options for this season’s finals, seeing last Saturday was another 'no play' weekend because of the sudden COVID-19 lockdown situation in Victoria.

League operations manager Mathew Begbie emailed anxious clubs on Thursday, setting out what may lie ahead.

Basically, the league may revert to either a six clubs in finals option, or prune back harder to four teams only in knockout semi-finals.

Both options provide for the Grand Final to still take place on Saturday, September 18.

If the lockdown is lifted and authorities rule that football and netball can proceed this Saturday, August 14, the MCDFNL will play three more home and away rounds, and have a ‘Final Six’ structure.

Alternatively, if football and netball cannot resume until Saturday, August 21, then the ‘Final Four’ scenario would come in.

This would provide for semi-finals on the weekend of September 11 and 12, with the winners advancing to the Grand Final on Saturday, September 18.

“The executive will be in discussion for any further contingency planning if more weeks are lost,” Begbie informed the clubs.

Darwin Cup record breaker Bill West

The annual Darwin Cup Carnival has often provided an opportunity for gallopers from Kyneton to make their mark.

Last Monday, Jessie Philpot – formerly apprenticed to Kyneton trainer Mick Sell – created history by becoming the first female jockey to ever win the most prestigious race in the Northern Territory.

And the Sell stable’s favourite galloper, Carlingford, won the Darwin Corporate Park Cup the previous week under the care of Kyneton trainer Neil Dyer who has been a regular at the northern carnival for many years, with two Darwin Cups to his credit.

This year Dyer’s hope Kaonic finished fourth in the $200,000 feature event behind Highly Decorated, a rejuvenated five-year-old who made it seven wins in a row, with Philpot in the saddle the last six times.

Highly Decorated is yet another of those remarkable racing stories, this time with an all-female team involved – owner Donna Stevenson, South Australian ‘bush’ trainer Nicole Bruggemann, and jockey Philpot.

A capacity crowd of over 10,000 attended the 11-event meeting, with the Cup the final event of the day.

From the inside barrier, Philpot quickly took $7.50 chance Highly Decorated to the front and maintained this role, kicking away in the straight to win by 2.6 lengths. It was a great front running ride by Philpot.

It was the biggest win of the 26-year-old rider’s career, and she said she had been inspired by Michelle Payne’s Melbourne Cup victory in 2015.

Philpot, originally from Queensland, has now won 89 races and has the astonishing record of having ridden winners in every state and territory in Australia.

The Sells were thrilled to see their former rider win the Darwin Cup. She left Kyneton to work for leading Alice Springs trainer Greg Connor earlier this year.

The Darwin Cup was also Bruggemann’s biggest success as a trainer. She is now setting up permanent stables in Darwin.

Apprentice jockey Fiona Sandkuhl, from Gisborne, has notched her first career winner, guiding the Mitch Beer- trained Snowbella to victory at Goulburn.

In only her sixth ride, the 21-year-old looked a natural in the saddle on July 30, taking the grey mare forward in the 1300m BM58 Handicap from gate four, before holding on for a good victory.

“It was amazing. I was pretty shocked to be honest. When I crossed the line, I didn’t really know how to feel,” Sandkuhl said.

“I just sort of looked around and thought, ‘wow, no one went past me’. It was a really great feeling, and great to come back a winner.”

The 21-year-old was over the moon after the race, and soon enough, messages of congratulations followed the win, with Sandkuhl explaining that a large and complex support network would have been willing her home.

The early career win will be no surprise to those who know Sandkuhl, who has spent much of her life in the saddle, kicking off with pony club when growing up in Gisborne.

“I have been riding since I was nine, it started with basic pony club and show jumping and I loved sporting horses; I did a lot of comps with Sporting Horse Australia,” she said.

“I started a business when I was 15 with my twin sister Isabella called ‘Back In Work Ponies And Horses’ and we rode a lot for other people and I just wanted a change.

“I got an opportunity with Patrick Payne Racing to begin my trackwork career there. I started working for George Osborne (Kyneton trainer) in that time.

“Mum’s friend saw a post about Mitch Beer (Albury trainer) wanting an apprentice and I went up and met him a couple of times and loved it and here I am.”

She moved to Albury in February last year, and had to do certificate three and trails right up to kicking off her riding career

Carlingford, now an eight-year-old, has earned $345,070 in prize money from 73 starts, with 10 wins.

In this campaign he won on Kyneton Cup Day, was placed in Melbourne twice, and finally secured the elusive metropolitan win (at Darwin) he has often promised to produce.

“He eats everything, travels everywhere and is a pleasure to deal with and knows and loves what he does.

Everyone around him adores the little character he is,” Sell said.

Sandkuhl said she was in love with the industry, and even enjoyed the jobs that some might find mundane.

“Now, I absolutely love starting early, I love the afternoon shifts and I even don’t mind picking up horse poo – it’s all part of the journey.”

A thankful young jockey wasn’t taking all the praise either, and thanked those who had helped along the way.

The Beer team has been on fire of late, and Sandkuhl admitted it was a good time to be the stable’s apprentice.

“We’re in a stage where we are getting quite a few winners and hopefully with my claim, it will be good to get chucked on a couple that have a good chance,” she said.

Beer has been impressed by Sandkuhl, explaining his apprentice was a natural in the saddle, and that it was just a matter of the young hoop getting her head around the racing side of things.

“Her riding ability is terrific, she is a natural rider, it has almost all been about teaching her the racing side of things,” Beer said.

“She has come through pony club, the equestrian side, dressage and all that off the track sort of stuff and it is just teaching her about racing and transitioning from one industry to the other.”

Beer said the stable’s newest apprentice was a hit with the entire team, largely due to her good work ethic and attitude.

“She is a great kid, everyone at the stables loves her.”

Asked if Sandkuhl had the stuff to be a top jockey, Beer believed she had all the tools to carve out a great career.

“I think her attitude is the best thing about her.

“No doubt when the success starts to come, it’s not going to get to her head and it will allow her to go through the ranks and hopefully in time in three or four years, we Fiona Sandkuhl notched her first career win at Goulburn on Friday. see her punching out winners in Sydney or Photos: Bradley Photos Melbourne.”

For three of the four Malmsbury players, this marked their first-ever baseball tournament, and they thoroughly enjoyed their experience.

Royce Sharp, Tayte Cottingham and Jack Hooper are loving their first season of baseball and the chance to represent their club on the Bendigo U16 squad.

“We have done relatively well for most of us having our first seasons and tournaments.

We have an environment where everyone is encouraging,” Tayte said. “My favourite thing about Bendigo Baseball is when you’re competing against another side, you’ve still got that encouragement.”

“Everyone supports each other as we just want to hit the ball and try to get some runs,” Royce added.

“It’s nice to have a weekend of fun baseball where everyone knows each other,” Jack said. “I hope to hit the ball and get a few strikeouts when I pitch.”

Fellow Malmsbury player Ryan Kinkade shared the sentiment and was excited to be back at the State Winter Championships two years after he hit a grand slam in his first tournament during the 2019 U12 event in Werribee.

Malmsbury Club president Jenny Ganim said it was a massive achievement to have players selected in the Bendigo rep side.

“We’ve been extremely proud of all our juniors this season. Our junior coach Jamie Kinkade has worked really hard with them all, which has proven in their development throughout the season,” Ganim said. “The State Champs is a terrific learning experience for the boys and we hope it helps fast track what Jamie is trying to achieve.

“We hope it won’t be too long until these lads are the strength of our senior sides. The Bendigo League has been a great support to us in our first season. We look forward to the future and endeavour to grow to compete with the established clubs at the highest level.”

Bendigo head coach Terry Smith said getting Malmsbury involved opened up Bendigo baseball to more growth, which would strengthen both juniors and seniors. Overall, they are just thrilled to be back at the State Winter Championships with new players after working hard to boost their junior numbers and get teams together.

Cricket growth at Tigerland Bill West There appears to be plenty of interest in cricket at Lancefield, with the club planning to field eight teams in the Gisborne District Cricket Association this coming season.

The club’s number one men’s team has been elevated to Jensen Shield after its premiership success in a lower grade last season; and the inaugural women’s premiership team will be joined by a second side.

“We also hope to have two girls’ teams (U13 and U15) and a new U17 boys’ side," secretary Pauline Goodes said yesterday.

Junior U13 and U11 teams are also on the horizon.

The club is still seeking to appoint coaches for the senior men’s and women’s sides, and the U17s.

Keen on cricket: Lancefield women’s team captain and social committee leader Emily Consiglio and president Andrew Richardt are looking forward to a successful 2021-2022 season.

A new seven-member social committee has been established, led by Emily Consiglio who is again captain of the top women’s team.

NEW LIFE MEMBER The highlight of the meeting was the decision to make Mark Caton a life member, the first to achieve this status for some years.

Caton’s long-term involvement on and off the field, from a keen teenager through to premiership player and long-serving treasurer, was spelt out.

The presentation will take place at the end of the season.

New players, experienced or otherwise, are very welcome at the club.
