Property in central Victoria is in demand. Despite COVID restricting people's movements, they are still snapping up properties.

Much of the movement has been driven by good access to the internet - it's given people the ability to work from home in many cases and it's also given them a look around a property before they buy.

Rob Waller, director of Waller Realty, said his agency had sold in excess of a dozen properties through virtual inspections and the ability to work from home had pushed a move to the country forward for a number of people.

Raine & Horne principal Ken Grech said he had found the strength of the market lay with people living away from the metropolitan area.

"Because we're been in level three restrictions people can go along and inspect a property," Mr Grech said.

"Being in the Macedon Ranges we've done a lot of one-on-one inspections and people are in a position to buy."

Twelve men and six women have been charged with more than 300 offences as part of the investigation.

A 61-year-old Lancefield woman was arrested on July 7 and charged in relation to handling stolen goods and criminal damage by fire. She was bailed to appear at Kyneton Magistrates Court on October 12.

A 36-year-old Romsey woman was arrested the same day and charged with eight offences in relation to handling stolen goods, criminal damage by fire and possessing proceeds of crime. She was bailed to appear at Kyneton Magistrates Court on October 12.

A 33-year-old Lancefield man was arrested on June 19 and charged with 21 offences related to theft and handling stolen goods. He was remanded in custody to appear at Kyneton Magistrates Court on September 28.

Detective Superintendent Peter Brigham, who oversees the Crime Command's State Anti-Gang Division, said the arrests and seizure of goods was "an enormous win".

"Vehicle theft had an incredibly detrimental impact on the community in a variety of ways, including the use of the stolen vehicles in the commission of other serious crimes and allowing offenders to move around more easily," he said.

"This syndicate had no regard for the safety of the community and this is further evidenced by the firearms seizures linked to this investigation."

Det. Supt Brigham said the community played a key role in providing information to police about suspicious activity.

Police have arrested three Macedon Ranges locals among 18 people of interest in an organised crime syndicate bust.

Vehicle Crime Squad detectives seized more than 70 vehicles as part of a ninemonth investigation into car re-birthing linked to the syndicate.

The syndicate operated in Melbourne's outer northern and western suburbs, with stolen vehicles and machinery being taken to rural properties to be dismantled, rebirthed and sold for profit.

The investigation launched after police received a tip-off to potential criminal activity at a property, which led to further investigations.

It's alleged the syndicate was involved in the supply of vehicles to other criminal groups and offenders, with many of the seized vehicles subsequently linked to other incidents such as pursuits.

Between May and September, detectives executed 32 warrants across residential, rural and business properties, seizing 53 motor vehicles, 18 motorcycles, 27 trailers, 19 vehicle engines, five high-end bicycles, three earthmoving machines, a tow truck and a boat.

Seized vehicle makes included Porsche, BMW, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Volkswagen, Subaru, Mini Cooper, Mitsubishi, Holden, Nissan, Ford, Kawasaki, KTM, Yamaha and Harley Davidson.

During the warrants, police also seized four high-powered firearms and ammunition, cash, drugs including methylamphetamines, cannabis, GHB and cocaine, and hundreds of stolen power tools and auto parts.

In total, more than 800 items of property valued at more than $2.5 million were seized by investigators.

Rail trail gains momentum

Moves to develop a new rail trail linking Castlemaine to Maryborough are gaining momentum with a new committee of six now formed to pursue the vision.

"Our group incorporated last month, and we've taken some important steps towards community and council engagement," new Castlemaine - Maryborough Rail Trail Association president, John Carruthers, said.

Mr Carruthers said they'd had a positive response from communities envisaged to benefit from the proposed rail aimed at delivering recreational opportunities for locals and a new attraction for visitors.

Besides Castlemaine, he named Guildford and Newstead among those expected to profit from the plan to recycle the disused, and now partially dismantled, line linking Guildford, Castlemaine, Newstead

and Maryborough.

"Cyclists, walkers, horse riders," Mr Carruthers listed as some of those anticipated to use the trail.

"We're very excited about where we're going," association secretary Lou Citroen said.

"Community engagement is happening. We're getting fliers out. A couple of us did a presentation via zoom to Newstead 2021.

"We've been interviewed by ABC in Bendigo and Ballarat and we're signing up members fairly quickly."

Mr Citroen said a main focus was engaging with the two shires through which the line runs - Mount Alexander Shire and Central Goldfields.

"The corridor has a gentle gradient so it would be easily accessible to all," he said.

"It has huge potential."

Rail Revival Alliance and Public Transport Users Association members are among those who have called for the line to be reinstated.

Alliance spokesman Scott Ramsay said the Castlemaine-Guildford rail corridor should be reopened to trains as part of a wider vision to restore the line linking Maryborough to Ballarat and the port of Geelong.

"The rail line would bring more economic benefits than the rail trail," Mr Ramsay said.

Castlemaine-based Public Transport Users Association member Chris Hooper also believes converting the line into a rail trail would be to miss a prime chance to reinstate freight and passenger services linking Maryborough to Castlemaine, Ballarat and the port of Geelong.

Two councillors returned unopposed Two Mount Alexander Shire councillors have been returned unopposed as a result of uncontested elections.

Mayor Christine Henderson was the only candidate to stand in Coliban Ward and incumbent councillor Tony Cordy was the only nominee in the Calder Ward.

Mount Alexander Shire Council election manager Dean Curtis said it was not an unusual occurrence.

In fact, Cr Cordy and fellow Loddon River Ward councillor John Nieman took their posts after uncontested elections four years ago.

Cr Henderson said it was quite exciting and she was honoured to represent council for a fourth term.

"The last three times I ran the vacancy was contested so this is a bit different for me," she said.

"I feel pleased that no-one was that dissatisfied with the job I've being doing that they felt the urge to run against me," Cr Henderson said.

"It's a luxurious position to be in but it is a good chance to stop and take stock and think about what the issues are that are important to me and to listen to what issues are important to the wider community moving forward," she said.

Cr Henderson said they had some big projects in the pipeline and some big issues to consider such as the future of home care and their capital works program in a decreasing financial environment.

Cr Henderson said she believed it will be good for council and council staff to have some continuity and experience moving forward and she looked forward to seeing who joined the duo at the table.

"It's exciting. We have a great team and the new council will have a high functioning organisation to work with," she said.

Cr Henderson said staff-led community consultation was a feature in the new Local Government Act and this would continue to be key.

Cr Tony Cordy said he felt very fortunate to have the opportunity to continue his role as a councillor for a second term.

"I feel very privileged to represent the community where I was born and grew up and I look forward to continuing to work with our council.

"We have a great team of staff and I look forward to continuing to work with them," he said.

Cr Cordy said there were a number of projects he would like to see through to completion and he was pleased to have that opportunity.

The Calder Ward councillor said it was somewhat surreal to be standing on the sidelines for a second time and watching fellow candidates campaign.

"I think we had a really diverse range of people on council last time and that really worked and I think we will have that again.

It's good to have that diversity and work together to come to good decisions for the community," he said.

Thieves hit golf club

Under cover of darkness, thieves have raided Woodend Golf Club and escaped with an array of valuable golf equipment, and an air compressor.

The break-in occurred at 3.30am on Sunday September 20 with damage caused.

Council candidates revealed The number of candidates for East Ward almost halved with just six applying this year compared to 11 in the 2016 election.

South and West Ward candidates remained steady: seven compared to eight and eight for both periods, respectively.

In the South Ward, a flood of candidates nominated close to the cut-off period, creating an early warped perception of the field.

South is the only ward where no current councillor seeks re-election following Cr Helen Radnedge's last-minute decision not to stand.

Both Cr Mandi Mees and Cr Andrew Twaits announced last month they would not seek a second term.

The open field has seen both fresh faces and former councillors emerge for the three vacancies.

Planning for growth and development is one of the biggest issues across all three Macedon Ranges wards.

Hepburn's Coliban Ward, covering the Trentham area, has three candidates competing for one vacancy.

The VEC assures it is well prepared for the 2020 local council elections and has released a COVIDSafe election plan that outlines the steps to deliver a safe election.

Local government elections will take place on October 24 by postal vote.

Returning Mount Alexander Shire councillors Christine Henderson and Anthony Cordy have secured single vacancies in their respective wards.

Mount Alexander will see uncontested elections for two wards in October's local government elections while Macedon Ranges has a strong field of prospective councillors across all wards.

There will be no public vote for Mount Alexander's Coliban and Calder Wards as returning councillors Christine Henderson and Anthony Cordy have secured single vacancies, respectively, unchallenged.

A low number of candidates for single vacancy wards is not unusual for Mount Alexander.

While Coliban Ward is down two nominations from 2016, Loddon River Ward has attracted three, up two from 2016. Tarrengower Ward has fielded two candidates, and Calder Ward just one, for two consecutive voting years.

Interest has increased in three vacancy Castlemaine Ward with 11 candidates this year compared to eight in 2016.

The Victorian Electoral Commission closed nominations last Tuesday and drew ballots electronically, minus a public gallery amid coronavirus restrictions. An independent observer was in attendance at all ballot draws across the state.

Spotlight on wildlife road trauma replanning and management of roads to re duce wildlife road trauma, along with advice on required resources for a review of best practice actions to make improvements.

Council also acknowledged recent community concern flagged for hot-spots along Gap Road (Riddells Creek to Cherokee), Shannons Road (New Gisborne), Sandy Creek Road (Riddells Creek) and Cherokee Road (between Cherokee and Kerrie).

An online petition to address these localities launched by Cherokee local John Power recently gained more than 700 signatures.

Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network has also identified numerous wildlife collision hot-spots including Ashbourne Road (Woodend), Black Forest Drive (Macedon), Donalds Road (Woodend), Romsey Road, Redesdale Road and Edgecombe Road.

Woodend wildlife rescuer Gwyn Beaumont, who assisted with the project, said it had been successful in the early stages but was no longer having the same impact.

"For a while that made a big difference, it was a talking point and the traffic did slow down along that section of road, but then, as always, people get used to things and stop noticing them and they did stop having the impact," she said.

"The number of roos that we attend has been increasing and the vast majority of animals that we respond to are injured as a result of car collisions."

Ms Beaumont and Mr Zabinskas also referenced the displacement of wildlife during new developments and are keen to see consideration given to wildlife-friendly fencing requirements for developments.

A report into current road safety measures and ways forward will be presented to a future council.

"One of the most frustrating things is that we know where all the wildlife get hit because they often get hit at the same places. Animals like kangaroos are very predictable in where they cross the road," he said.

"It's hard to get road speeds reduced and speed is one of the biggest issues: people don't want to drive slower and be held up for a few extra seconds."

Mr Zabinskas runs the Five Freedoms Animal Rescue in Trentham and specialises in the care and rehabilitation of larger wildlife like kangaroos, which have been the most commonly injured creatures on local roads.

Spearheading the move at council's September ordinary meeting, Cr Natasha Gayfer said wildlife road trauma had been raised with council several times over the past four years and was in need of urgent attention.

Rate notice apology

Mount Alexander Shire Council is offering an apology to ratepayers who recently received an erroneous rate notice.

Council's director of corporate and community services, Lisa Knight, said a small portion of ratepayers were advised that payment was overdue on their 2020/2021 Rate Notice.

"At this stage, we don't know exactly how many ratepayers are affected, and are working with our software provider to work through and resolve the error," Ms Knight said.

"We offer our sincere apologies for the inconvenience, and any stress or concern the error may have caused at this time.

"If you are worried your notice is incorrect, or would like to double-check the amount owing, please contact our Customer Service Team who can arrange to reissue your notice."

The Customer Service Team is available via phone on weekdays between 8.30am and 5pm on 5471 1700 or email info@mountalexander.vic.gov.au.

The due date for the first rate instalment has been extended to October 14.

Council can arrange a payment plan for anyone having difficulty paying their rates. It has also adopted a COVID-19 Financial Hardship Policy to help support local ratepayers, businesses or residents experiencing temporary hardship due to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

Health services New CEO for merger confirmed Castlemaine

A new CEO has been appointed to lead Castlemaine Health from early next year when current CEO Ian Fisher retires.

Sue Race, the current CEO of the Kilmore and District Hospital, will take up the position of CEO from January 11, 2021.

Castlemaine Health Board chair Peggy Ronnau said Ms Race shone throughout the interview process.

"She talked about her commitment to improving the healthcare people receive. She spoke passionately about engaging with the communities that health services serve," Ms Ronnau said.

Having grown up on a dairy farm in Tatura in the Goulburn Valley, Ms Race retains a passion for working in regional and rural areas. Her academic background spans science, nutrition, business administration, project management and public policy.

Ms Race will bring with her an in-depth knowledge of the healthcare industry and the political, social and economic environment in which it operates. She previously worked for the Department of Health and Human Services and has invaluable insights into funding at both the state and Commonwealth level.

Ms Race has been directly involved in contributing to the health reform agenda and the development of activity-based funding models for subacute and non-admitted patient services.

Ms Ronnau said Ms Race's leadership strengths were her ability to build trust, communicate compellingly, genuinely collaborate and solve complex problems.

"She has a strong track record of bringing staff, local residents and community partners along with her on the journey to deliver high quality and safe

services for the community.

"We are incredibly excited about Castlemaine Health's future with Sue and look forward to having her on board," Ronnau said.

Community health services in Sunbury and the Macedon Ranges are set to be strengthened with the announcement of the merger of Cobaw Community Health and Sunbury Community Health.

The merged organisation, to be known as Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health, will formally launch on January 1, 2021.

The merger has been endorsed by both organisations' boards and backed by a vote of support by Cobaw's members last Thursday night.

"Our organisations have provided services that respond to the needs of our communities for several decades," said Phillip Ripper, CEO of Sunbury Community Health.

"By joining together, we will build on the strengths of each organisation and be better positioned to collaborate, take advantage of funding opportunities and share knowledge across our communities."

Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health will cover an area of over 1700 km2 from Sunbury to beyond the borders of Macedon Ranges Shire and its 280 staff and 100 volunteers will be based across four sites at Sunbury, Romsey, Woodend and Kyneton.

"Despite the ongoing success of both our organisations, the environment continues to be challenging for smaller community health organisations," said Margaret McDonald, CEO of Cobaw.

"As two entities, we often miss out on securing new funding contracts as they are given to larger organisations."

The amalgamation follows the success of other mergers in the health sector, including that of Kyneton District Health and Hepburn Health, which last year became Central Highlands Rural Health.

"We are similar organisations with similar values and a genuine commitment to the individuality of our communities," Mr Ripper said.

"We have collaborated on a number of projects and truly believe that together we will be in a stronger position to expand services and ensure that community health continues to be delivered close to home."

After a long and successful career, Ms McDonald is looking forward to retirement early next year once the transition to the new organisation has been successfully completed. Mr Ripper will lead the new organisation.

"For those accessing our services and programs very little will change," Ms McDonald said.

"You will receive the same high level of care from the same location. There will be a new name and a new logo but you can be assured that behind it are the same local staff that you know and trust with their strong connection to the community."

Residents have reported the illegal harvesting of trees from the Metcalfe Forest for the past two years, with the activity increasing over the past few months.

Alarm at tree harvesting Malmsbury East residents have become increasingly alarmed at the number of live trees being cut down, chopped up and removed from the Metcalfe Forest, between the Calder Freeway and Malmsbury-Metcalfe Road.

One resident contacted local authorities and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning in 2018 when this activity was first noticed, and again earlier this year, but said they were frustrated that the environmental vandalism had continued uninterrupted over the past two years, increasing in scale and brazenness over the past few months.

"We presume the harvesting is for possible commercial firewood use because the operation appears professional," the resident said.

"Despite DELWP fixing some 'small' signs advising

that firewood collection is not permitted in this area, no policing or surveillance appears to have been done in at least the past 18 months."

DELWP's regional manager of forest fire operations, Paul Bates, said authorised officers were responding to several reports of illegal firewood collection including the Malmsbury area, and warned offenders faced significant penalties if caught.

"Under the Forest Act 1958, people who collect firewood outside designated collection areas or season, or take more than the maximum allowable amounts, can face fines of up to $8261, or a maximum penalty of oneyear imprisonment or both, if the matter proceeded to court," Mr Bates said.

"Commercial firewood suppliers must have the appropriate licences and permits to collect and sell firewood

obtained in Victoria.

"Domestic firewood collection is allowed in designated collection areas during a firewood collection season, and people may collect up to two cubic metres per day and 16 cubic metres per financial year."

Mr Bates said authorised officers regularly patrolled parks, forest and reserves and would act against illegal firewood collection because of the negative impact it had on forest health, wildlife habitat, public safety and the sustainability of firewood resources that local communities relied on.

The Macedon Ranges will experience summer in a whole new way this year, as hospitality businesses begin to reimagine the way they work.

Macedon Ranges Council is helping local businesses fast-track applications to expand outdoor dining areas and welcome back customers now that COVID-19 restrictions are easing.

Being able to dine outside will be key to economic recovery for the shire's hospitality businesses in the wake of the pandemic.

Under the Victorian Government's Outdoor Eating and Entertainment Package, local businesses can apply for grants of up to $5000 to help pay for items like umbrellas, outdoor furniture and screens that will help transition to bigger and safer outdoor dining spaces.

Grants are available for licensed and unlicensed cafes, restaurants, takeaway food businesses, pubs, taverns, bars and clubs.

The Victorian Government is also putting in place processes to enable quick turnaround in relation to extending or approving liquor licenses.

Council officers will help businesses determine what options are available in each location. In some instances, a site visit with council officers will be the best way to assess and progress these outdoor dining ideas and applications to extend their outdoor dining footprint.

New applications to expand the outdoor dining space/location on private land will need a planning assessment and depending on the circumstances, may need to undergo a normal planning permit process.

Distinctive art installations are hoped to be secured as part of the exciting next step for Romsey Ecotherapy Park.

A unique feature, Art in the Park incorporates seven modern sculptures designed to stimulate and soothe the senses and the Romsey Ecotherapy Park Inc is about to launch a fundraising campaign to make it a reality.

The group seeks to raise about $180,000 for the works that were specifically designed for the space by predominantly local artists.

Romsey Ecotherapy Park Inc’s Jenny Stillman said Art in the Park would consolidate Romsey Ecotherapy Park as a truly unique regional wellbeing and cultural asset for the local community and visitors alike.

“The sculptures are a big part of the sensory therapeutic purpose of the park and will also showcase art and culture,” Ms Stillman said.

From a gentle flowing water-clock and harmonic bells to a large wooden carved storytelling chair and impressive portal entrance, the pieces are sure to inspire.

“The whole ethos of this park - the health and wellbeing focus - has really come into sharp focus this year with the COVID experience that people have gone through,” Ms Stillman said.

“There is a real appreciation to get somewhere out in the open, close to nature where you can just breathe, think and collect your thoughts, and that was the premise for the project way back when the concept was being refined.”

The ecotherapy park has been 10 years in the making and was brought to life by a group of dedicated local residents who lobbied to transform an old derelict school site.

Since then, all levels of government and other bodies have contributed to funding the vision for a special place to enhance health and wellness in nature for ages and abilities.

Now it’s the community’s turn to help secure one of the most engaging features and leave a legacy.

With construction due to begin in July 2021, Art in the Park funding must be secured before detailed design is finalised in February 2021.

Ms Stillman, also Romsey Region Business and Tourism Association president, said securing the ecotherapy park as a distinct attraction for the area was important for improving the local economy.

Organisers were determined the 12th annual fundraiser for Castlemaine Health would go ahead despite the challenges of COVID and have opted to take the popular event online.

RTM race director Gavin Krasner said the theme for the 2020 event was 'Run Your Own Race' and participants would be encouraged to run their selected distance over a 60-hour period kicking off at 6am on the Grand Final Day public holiday, Friday October 23 and finishing at 6pm on the Sunday evening October 25.

The team from RTM and Castlemaine creatives Storyland joined forces last week to create some fun videos of race mascot 'The Bird' (aka Dr Richard Mayes) to promote the event.

The race director said there had been a lot of focus on health and wellbeing during the pandemic and lockdowns and a lot of people had been focusing on improving their fitness and looking after their mental health.

"RTM presents the perfect opportunity for people of all fitness levels and abilities to challenge themselves," he said.

"In 2020 people can run 5km, 10km or the new distance 15km.

The popular half marathon 21.1km will also return for the second year," Gavin said.

This year there is just a flat $25 entry fee.

"The bulk of the ticket fee will go straight to Castlemaine Health who need our support now more than ever," Gavin said.

"The wonderful thing about the virtual race is that anyone can take part no matter where they are in Australia or the world. You just select your distance, register, upload your race time/s and a picture or selfie to the platform. We will have interactive leaderboards and prizes for 'Best Dressed' which is always a fun element of RTM," he said.

"We have no expectations on the number of entries we may get or the money we may be able to raise, we simple urge our friends and supporters to get on board, run for a cause, run your PB and share it with us via the website.

"We don't know what the COVID landscape will look like by then but we felt as we most likely still won't be able to gather in large groups, this is a way the event can proceed and people can connect in a fun but safe way," he said.

"The Run The Maine committee will also be challenging ourselves by attempting a 'quadrella' and running every race distance 5km through to 21.1km in the 60 hour period!" Gavin said.

Runners can also join the RTM Strava runners group to share times and follow the progress of the RTM committee members' quadrella progress.

Local podcast returns for second season A locally focused variety podcast 'The Covid Crossing' has been successful in obtaining a grant from Macedon Ranges Shire Council for another six episodes.

The podcast is a heartwarming and thoughtprovoking mix of stories, local interviews, conversations, wellbeing and equality ideas. The Australian Government is extending JobKeeper until 28 March 2021 and the temporary Coronavirus Supplement for those on income support until 31 December 2020, after which income support will continue.

The Mount Alexander Animal Welfare Op Shop in Johnstone Street Castlemaine has reopened its doors and during lockdown created a new 'Makers Corner'.

The new installation aims to support local artists and crafters who have been affected by COVID-shutdown restrictions.

MAAW Op Shop manager Tania Butterworth said the MAAW committee unanimously endorsed the concept of 'supporting those who support MAAW all year round' by allowing individuals to display and sell their arts and crafts through the shop.

MAAW will receive a small commission from each piece sold.

MAAW volunteer and talented textile artist Fran Joyce is among the first artists to feature in the new space.

Fran's beautiful scarves, which are made from linen and merino, can also be found on Instagram at handwovenbyfrancesca.

MAAW is open Tuesday and Thursday, 10am - 3pm, and Saturday 10am - 1pm.

Gisborne Police have issued two fines and suspended both drivers in a crackdown on road speedsters last Tuesday.

Police detected a motorist 132 km/h in a 100 zone on Melton Road, Gisborne.

The 24-year-old from Melton West was issued a $527 fine and three-month licence suspension.

Police also detected a 34-year-old from Werribee, travelling 87 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. This person received a $454 fine and three-month suspension.

Make a difference in a woman’s life

Photo: Spendthrift Australia While the arrival of spring reminds us of years past when it was possible to enjoy being among the hustle and bustle of the Spring Racing Carnival's unbridled, ahem, social gatherings, season 2020 is shaping up to look considerably different.

But all is not lost. In fact, a local good news story has emerged that might just have us all riding high.

Garry Cuddy, general manager of Spendthrift Australia, a leading thoroughbred stud farm located in the Macedon Ranges' scenic Kerrie Valley, has very generously offered to donate a nomination to their young, exciting stallion Overshare to the shire's only community-owned, not-for-profit aged care facility, RM Begg Kyneton Aged Care Inc. At first glance, the odds of a horse stud fundraising for an aged-care organisation might seem, well, long. But, as Cuddy, who was recently appointed to the Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria Board, explained, "COVID doesn't discriminate and has meant that the annual stallion parades have had to go online.

"Traditional open days here at the farm usually attract large numbers of visitors, which translate into bookings for our stallions for breeding services.

"This season will have its challenges and we know that a lot of other people are doing it tough, especially in the aged-care sector. So, this is a way we can help make a difference in our local community."

A stakes-winning son of super-sire I Am Invincible, the farm's stallion Overshare began his stud career in 2018 and his first crop of yearlings will hit sale rings during the 2020-21 season.

Overshare is an extremely good-looking stallion who throws stunning foals.

"At an $11,000 service fee, Overshare is an ideal alternative for breeders whose budgets can't quite stretch to I Am Invincible's $209,000 fee," Cuddy said.

"The aim of our fundraiser is to 'share' a nomination to Overshare with RM Begg."

The equine industry forms a large part of Macedon Ranges local economy from breeding and training to many support industries and services such as vets and farriers as well as manufacturers of horse-related products and feed. RM Begg spokesperson Sarah Collier welcomed the generous support of Spendthrift Australia and invited mare owners to submit their offers for this wonderful stallion and get behind this amazing and generous gesture.

"We hope the bidding whips up some real excitement among breeders and we'd love to see a photo finish!" Ms Collier quipped.

A story worth (over)sharing

Share the Dignity, a charity helping women and girls access sanitary items, needs volunteers to help collect, count and distribute items for its upcoming It's In The Bag 2020 Christmas appeal.

This year has been tough. Challenging circumstances are pushing women and girls fleeing from domestic violence and homelessness, at risk of period poverty, into a more terrifying world.

Tough economic conditions and the coronavirus pandemic mean the charity needs to rally closer together to make the appeal a success.

Share the Dignity needs your help to support women in need and fight period poverty.

"Our volunteers are called 'Sheroes and Heroes' and they are the heart and soul of our organisation," Share the Dignity's founder Rochelle Courtney said.

"They volunteer their time to help women and girls dealing with period poverty in their local communities, and deliver products such as pads, tampons and menstrual cups to local charities.

"Together, they are leaving a positive mark on the lives of women.

"Without them, we simply couldn't reach as many women as we do."

Share the Dignity is an Australian charity bringing dignity to women and girls experiencing homelessness, domestic violence and period poverty through the distribution of sanitary items.

It's in the Bag appeal gives Australian women and girls doing it tough over the holiday period a reason to smile and feel cared for, as well as restoring some of their dignity by providing them with handbags filled with essential hygiene products, as well as a few extra little treats.

This campaign is run from November 20 through to November 29 and bags can be dropped off at your local Bunnings store.

Castlemaine resident Isis Jordan is thrilled to be the new manager for Lancefield and District Farmers Market.

"We all have stories to tell, and I'm committed to honouring and sharing yours," she assured stallholders in the lead-in to the monthly market held at Romsey Park on Saturday.

For the second month in a row, the market was held at Romsey, after uncertainty around whether it could continue to be held at Lancefield because of concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Formerly from Daisy Hill, between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, the new market manager moved to Castlemaine five years ago.

"I'm a dairy farmer who continues to work making artisanal goats' cheese in Sutton Grange, and I find great joy in sharing my product and its story with the general public," she explained.

The award-winning Holy Goat Cheese proprietors encouraged her to apply for the market manager role.

Isis paid tribute to former long term Lancefield Farmers Market manager Meggs Haines, stating she had made an extraordinary contribution to the life and spirit of the popular market.

"Without her leadership and conviction, we would not have this beautiful market, or benefit from the connection to community it cultivates.

"Thank you Meggs, and the Lancefield Neighbourhood House, for nurturing a space for authentic, local producers to share our bounty in a sustainable way."

Meggs Haines came to the district and worked in vineyards, and originated the idea of utilising the centre plantation in Lancefield's High Street for a farmers market.

While there were initially plenty of sceptics about the idea, the neighbourhood house provided its backing and the market grew into one of the most successful in the state.

Weekend regional Victoria welcomed the return of primary producers who sell non-food products, and also the non-food speciality makers.

Saturday morning brought mixed blessings weather-wise for Stories to relate: 75-year-old potato farmer Barry Hunt -- a Lancefield identity -- spent time getting to know the market, with stallholders spread around the oval perimeter. new farmers market manager Isis Jordan. Outdoor facilities reopen in Macedon Ranges for adults with gathering and density limits in place, and outdoor fitness for groups of 10 people.

Clubs operating on council grounds will be required to ensure these restrictions are enforced. Changerooms and social rooms in facilities will remain closed, consistent with Stage 3 requirements.

The council will work with local clubs and the relevant state sporting associations regarding the new arrangements to ensure that appropriate planning and support is available.

Parks will remain open and residents will now be able to gather in groups of 10 for recreation and exercise purposes, including boot camps.

Many council facilities, including pools and gyms, will remain closed until further information is provided by the Victorian Government and council has appropriate measures in place to ensure community and staff safety.

Agent comment - Keatings Real Estate When travel restrictions lift for Melbourne Macedon Ranges real estate should be in for a boost.

“When resrictions lifed last time, the Macedon Ranges, Yarra Valley, Morning Penisula, Bellarine Peniunsula, the Southern Highands in New South Wales and Queensland’s Hinterland all experienced a surge in enquiry and sales and a slight increase in price,” says Woodend’s John Keating of Keating’s Real Estate.

NBN boost good for business NBN Co’s $700 million plan to support small business innovation has been welcomed by The Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman Kate Carnell.

Under the three-year plan, NBN Co has pledged to build fibre optic cable to business premises free of charge and make business-grade fibre services more affordable.

“About 1.4 million businesses across Australia are now eligible to have fibre installed to their premises at no cost,” Ms Carnell says.

“Of those - about 700,000 business in 240 business fibre zones - many of which are high streets in regional areas - are also eligible for cheaper plans.

“In fact, point-to-point fibre on demand infrastructure will be made available in 85 regional zones, giving small businesses in those areas greater choice.

“According to NBN Co, plans to improve affordability could see internet bills as much as halved for small businesses on business grade plans.

This will come as a welcome relief, particularly those small businesses struggling in this COVID crisis.

“Internet access is essential to the vast majority of small businesses, so it is important for retail

providers such as Telstra, Optus and TPG to cooperate and pass these savings on.

“This also acts as an incentive to small businesses to ensure they have a digital presence, at a time when more consumers are shopping online.

“A recently released survey of more than 1000 Australians conducted on behalf of NBN Co, revealed close to half (49 per cent) of respondents had increased their online shopping during the pandemic shutdown period and 70 per cent have been consciously supporting local businesses online.

“It revealed more than two thirds of those surveyed wanted to support more local businesses, however they were restricted by the limited digital presence.

“COVID-19 has delivered a harsh lesson that small businesses can’t rely on outdated business models and brick-and-mortar stores anymore.

“Digitisation is now essential for a small business to be truly competitive.

“Modelling estimates small businesses could unlock more than $49 billion of private sector output over a decade by adopting better use of mobile and internet technologies. More than half of this benefit could be realised in rural and regional Australia.”

“We’re getting more and more enquiries all the time - we’ve never been busier,” Marg says.

Buying a property is likely to be the most expensive purchase you make.

Some purchasers of residential and commercial property may not be aware that they can save a considerable amount of money if they are eligible for a discount or rebate on the stamp duty otherwise payable on their purchase.

“The most common stamp duty concessions are the first home owner exemption and concession, the pensioner stamp duty concession and the principal place of residence concession,” John says.

The Victorian Government has provided an additional incentive to promote growth in regional Victoria by offering eligible purchasers of commercial and industrial properties a 50 per cent reduction on stamp duty.

There are also government grants currently available in relation to residential properties.

The First Home Owners grant, for those building or moving into a new property, and the HomeBuilder scheme that offers eligible Australian citizens grants of up to $25,000 towards building or renovating their homes.

Every property transaction is unique.

A purchaser may, in certain circumstances, be able to ‘cool off’ under a Contract of Sale. The purchaser may, however, retain from any deposit paid, the greater of $100 and 0.2 per cent of the purchase price.

It is, therefore, best for a purchaser to obtain advice on a Contract of Sale and any stamp duty or government grants that may be available before they sign the contract.

I commend the Midland Express for raising the issue of my daughter Courtney Herron and the wider issue of violence against women in Victoria and in the Macedon Ranges ('Compelled to fight', September 15).

I was also prompted after I read further on the tragic death of Alicia Little from Kyneton in the Express ('Released on parole', September 8). I say that as I have walked in the same shoes as the Little family.

Like Alicia's killer Evans, Courtney's killer Hammond had a long history of violence against women stretching over two states. He was also on parole (a CCO) and was actually released four months early on appeal from a previous violent offence against a woman. He killed Courtney after six weeks.

The similarities don't end there. Hammond was found not guilty due to mental impairment and could be released after a few years in a psychiatric hospital. Free to roam the streets yet again. Free to harm another woman.

Both perpetrators received these sentences after the Crown took the path of least resistance. Decisions based on risk management, not the two parties the State is mandated to protect - the victims and the community. In fact everywhere I turn, it appears the victims are the forgotten and neglected parties. After the event, the focus remains entirely on the perpetrators.

Readers may be under the impression that these are isolated incidents. They are not. The cases of Alicia and Courtney are the ones that attracted publicity. At the moment, two murders of women are running through the courts but this time they are shielded by suppression orders.

The State and judicial system seem to be unable to cope with these violent offenders. Cracks appear at every turn. Silence is the new weapon.

After the murder of Jill Meagher in 2012, the public demanded action. What did occur was an escalation in these attacks on women. And by men who had been let loose on the community with little monitoring nor assistance. This has to end.

The data on the medieval warm period shows localised warning in some regions of 1 to 1.5 deg.

The global temperature was lower than today as shown by analysis of ice cores, tree rings and stalactites.

Sea levels did not rise also indicating that global temperatures were not rising.

Compare that to today where the highest temperatures ever recorded were measured this year, glaciers are retreating, ice shelves melting etc.

Just how much of Australia, America, Alaska and Siberia needs to burn before Mr Scoles recognises global warming?

He, Scotty from Marketing and the orange idiot from America remind me of the caption of the Titanic ignoring all the warnings and sailing full steam ahead to disaster.

Ben Laycock, chief assistant to the assistant chief, Castlemaine Chamber of Commerce The Honorable Angus Taylor, Federal Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction (ha ha, very funny!), has released a grandiose statement intended to put the interminable climate debate to bed once and for all, no matter who you have gone to bed with.

After much faffing about, he has come up with a plan. Right from the very start he boldly states, without so much as a hint of irony: "My plan is based on outcomes, not ideology".

Young Angus feels we have all been choosing between renewable energy and fossil fuels based on our ideology, and he is none too pleased with our choices. But let's take a look around the world (and it is round, by the way). We see nations opting for renewable energy irrespective of their ideological bent (and some of them are pretty bent, believe you me). The choice between renewables and fossil fuels is not an ideological choice, no matter how hard you try to make it one.

The ideology emerges when the time comes to choose the method we use to choose that choice (l hope that makes sense).

Your free marketeers, after reluctantly conceding that climate change is not fake news (that only took 30 years or so), would obviously opt for a carbon tax: thus allowing the market to choose how they would avoid that irksome tax (this is the fun part, your freemarketeers enjoy nothing more than devising devious ways to avoid tax).

Your dyed in the wool Socialist however, finds such unbounded freedom anathema to his ideology, repugnant to his basic instincts and an affront to his very raison d'etre. As an organ of The State, he feels impelled to wield the limitless power at his disposal, to bend the market to his iron will.

He decrees: "Thou shall not invest in renewable energy. Thou shalt invest in carbon capture and storage....or else!"

Christine Pruneau, secretary, Macedon Ranges Residents Association 2020. What a shocker of a year already, but it's not over yet. There's still a mighty 'fork in the road' moment coming up with the council elections on October 24. Getting it wrong could send the shire backwards to the dark-ages thinking and behaviour it had between 2012 and 2016, and it would be a four-year sentence.

No council is perfect. But some, like the one Macedon Ranges Shire had before this current one, are rock bottom. Let's not go there again. You will need your wits about you because history is repeating itself in Macedon Ranges.

In 2008 a company, Macedon Ranges Residents Secretariat Ltd, recruited and ran candidates in all Macedon Ranges wards attempting to gain influence at council for its own purposes. It's happening again in 2020, this time a collection of economic development dogmatists have been recruiting candidates who share their mindset. It won't be well-considered economic development but the type that overrides environmental and community values and public interest, competes with local businesses and expects privileged treatment if not some ratepayer subsidisation. Sounds like a return to the bad old days: think $40 million equine centre, commercial development at Hanging Rock, private commercialisation of Kyneton airfield, and you'll begin to get the picture.

With four councillors retiring, the good, the bad and the ugly will all be in the mix.

Irresponsible and reckless TW Bird, Lancefield To the residents of Tylden ('Trees spark concern', Midland Express, September 8), let me tell you that two years ago I came home to find two maple trees, to mature at eight metres, planted directly under powerlines on my naturestrip.

Another five were also planted in front of neighbouring properties.

I immediately contacted the Macedon Ranges Shire Council and asked for the trees to be removed and was ignored. I persisted and was finally contacted by MRSC staff who were most reluctant to have the trees removed.

I pointed out to the staff that there was a requirement for a three-metre offset from powerlines in the Street Tree Planting Policy only to be told that that was an old document.

Eventually, after a three-week battle, I was contacted by the MRSC who told me the trees would be replaced. This contact just so happened on the same day I contacted Electricity Safe Victoria. But I am sure the MRSC would say that was coincidental.

And then a short time later the MRSC showed its true colours and integrity by rewriting their Street Tree Planting Policy.

With this rewrite they took irresponsibility and recklessness to another level.

Yes, you guessed it, they removed the requirement for a three-metre offset.

Right or wrong irrelevant Phil Fletcher, Campbells Creek It seems that Phillip Scoles ('Warmer equals wetter', Opinions, September 15) has created some angst among the local climate change zealots.

He has had the audacity to express an opinion that differs from that of the Castlemaine-stream.

Accordingly, he has been attacked by those who demand the opinions of dissenters are cancelled.

One of your correspondents even suggested that it was wrong for your newspaper to publish Mr Scoles' letter.

Whether Mr Scoles was right or wrong is irrelevant.

What really matters is the principle that he should be allowed to express an alternative opinion without being ridiculed for doing so.

Excellent contribution Bryan Young, Castlemaine Scientist Linda Pannan and partner Graham Thomas are to be congratulated on their contribution to improving the environment in these times of climate change ('Free thermal home assessments', Midland Express, September 22).

Linda Pannan is part of the extensive contributions by female scientists dating back to 1856 when Eunice Newton Foote, an American scientist, demonstrated that increasing the CO2 (carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere caused its temperature to rise more rapidly in sunlight. She was the first scientist to show how burning fossil fuels causes problems.

Perhaps this couple could also create some ideas to help senior public servants and politicians improve their memories at the Royal Commission?

The experiences of Victorians during the coronavirus pandemic are being sought for an exhibition on the unprecedented year of 2020.

Titled 2020words, the project is looking for people's thoughts, stories and observations - whether happy, sad, strange, surprising or funny.

It can be a moment or a memory, something that was overheard or seen, felt or thought. It can be a poem or prose, a single sentence or a single word.

The project is designed to capture this unique moment in time and also recognise the state's frontline healthcare workers.

A selection of the best pieces will be exhibited in the new year with the aim of raising money for a tribute to the critical work performed by those on the frontline.

Votes from the public will select the exhibition's most striking piece.

"If you find yourself in this boat, you may be able to claim a deduction for the loss.

It's crucial that you keep proper records to ensure you can claim the deduction you're entitled to," Mr Watson said.

Sole traders and individual partners in a partnership who meet certain conditions can offset current year losses against other assessable income (such as salary or investment income) in the same income year.

Otherwise, they can defer the loss or carry it forward and offset it to a future year when the business next makes a profit.

Each year the Year 8’s at Sacred Heart College participate in the MAD (Making a Difference) Projects. The Making a Difference Inquiry Project involves students choosing an issue of social or environmental injustice, that they would like to investigate in order to promote positive change. To do so, they produce a range of project materials, which they will present to their class and RE teacher early in Term 4.

Women in Australian Politics

My name is D’Arcy and for my Year 8 MAD project I picked the topic ‘Women in Australian Politics’. This is a social issue because women and men in my opinion should have an equal say in our democracy. Their voice should have parity in the laws that govern our nation. I chose this topic because I have always been interested in politics and in particular women in politics.

Women have had a long history in Australia’s Parliament, for example, Australia was the first country to allow women to run for parliament. However, in 2020 only 32% of representatives in Australian Parliaments are women. As a young woman I would like to see that number grow to 50 per cent as soon as possible.

In 1921, Edith Cowan, became the first woman elected to Australian parliament. In 100 years, our nation has had female Premiers, a female Governor-General, a female Prime Minister, and an elected Indigenous woman. As the end of my MAD project approaches, I look forward to exploring what actions we can take on behalf of women in Australia.

Terrorism within Europe

The issue I have selected to investigate is Terrorism within Europe. Terrorism has been around for centuries and many historians believe that it even started in the time of the Zealots.

Though the idea of modern-day terrorism comes from the 1790s when the French Revolution was happening, they referred to this as La Terreur (The Terror). This topic can be so widely spread with attacks all around the world, but in Europe alone, 10 people have died this year because of terrorism and 27 injured. Terrorism is an example of social injustice; it's killing and harming people to get a message across.

I decided to investigate terrorism because I’ve always wanted to know more about it and the causes of it, and I decided to focus particularly on Europe because that’s where my passions lie. I want to help people (even if it’s just in my small way) and make a small difference in our big world.

Raising awareness about terrorism can create a positive change, and help others realise how we are truly lucky to live where we do. By informing others about this topic we can help promote qualities of respect and dignity. We must all actively participate and be the best possible version of ourselves.

Open Evening that takes place at the College. This year, however, that cannot happen, instead they will be presented in Religious Education classes and on the College’s social media platforms. Topics consist of injustice we see every day or a problem that is sometimes ignored. Some examples are, but not limited to, mental health, homelessness, political corruption, rights for people with a disability and plastic pollution. Torturous Animal Testing

Animal testing is a worldwide issue and not enough people know about it, that is why I chose it for my MAD (making a difference) project. Animal testing is full of torturous and painful procedures impacting over 100 million animals each year globally, at our expense.

Animal testing is a bad science! According to DO SOMETHING.ORG only 8% of tests that were affective when performed on animals, have been proven to be affective on people. This means that 92% of these tests are useless, and causing animals excruciating pain for no reason! This only makes human trials all the more dangerous! Human trials are already considered dangerous and now the results, received from animal testing, that we thought were safe are found to be unreliable!

Animal testing is not the only way! Scientists have come up with much more accurate ways including Computer Silico Modeling, and Vitro Testing. For more Alternatives to animal testing you can visit the Animal Alternatives section of the PETA website.

Animal testing is a cruel and dangerous science, and it must stop. Unfortunately animals cannot speak for themselves, so it’s up to us to speak for them! To help put a stop to animal testing, you could do things such as; refuse to buy anything tested on animals. You can tell if a product has been tested on animals by reading the label or searching it up. You can also check out the website CHOOSE CRUELTY FREE, who are raising awareness of animal testing and campaigning to end it. Animal testing needs to stop!

Art in the Park to inspire Art in the Park would consolidate Romsey Ecotherapy Park as a truly unique regional wellbeing and cultural asset for the local community and visitors alike. Here are the artworks that will help transform the space: ‘Spring Leaves’, ‘Gingko Tree’, ‘Silver Leaves’ (artist - Rudi Jass) Kinetic wind sculptures are mesmerising, almost meditative, pieces of art that incorporate the clever use of sculpted blades which, driven by wind, create numerous patterns. Visible from all areas of the Romsey Ecotherapy Park, Rudi Jass will create three five-metre-high sculptures to be positioned near the water and sand play areas of the Sensory Therapeutic Space. They will each be adapted to feature unique blade leaf design to reflect aspects of the Park. The ‘leaves’ will change with light and shade.

‘The Meeting Place’ (artist - Glenn Romanis) ‘The Harmonic Bell Tree’ (artist - Anton Hasell) Chimes have a special place in garden design, one that is deeply felt in Asian cultures. The Harmonic Bell Tree brings this healing experience to Romsey. Sublime experiences of gentle rippling musical sound infuse mindful connections to a place and a time.

The Harmonic Bell Tree stands at 1.6-metres-high with the three tuned bronze bells fitted to the post. Three parabolic harmonic bells in golden bronze stand one above the other on a galvanised steel post like a strangely beautiful abstract tree. Positioned in the middle of the park’s Sensory Therapeutic Space, the three bells are tuned to sound the C-E-G chord when patted by hand in a humming, resonant peal. Positioned at a height that makes touching the bells available to everyone, the bells reverberate with a long and slow decay into a special silence that can attune a person’s listening intensity and sensitivity. A crimson rosella in its bright plumage, cast in bronze at life scale, perches on the top bell, ready to take flight as the air fills with musical flair.

The Romsey Water Clock (artist - Anton Hasell) Gentle flowing water and a regular chime sets a person into dreams of distant, magical places like that island in the middle of the lake. The sonorous chime of the bell also tunes into the ambient soundscape of the parkland, the call of birds, and the scent of plants, awakening one to nature’s fresh vitality in this garden landscape.

Anton Hasell, the renowned sound sculptor responsible for Melbourne’s Federation Bells, has created a unique centerpiece concept for inclusion in the Sensory Therapeutic Space’s labyrinth paved area. The 1.4-metre Romsey water-clock sculpture consists of a 1.36-metre stainless steel hexagon structure rising out of a self-contained pond.

Capping this structure is a cast-bronze landscape containing a pool of water with a small island at its centre.

The Meeting Place low totem and stone sculpture will be site specific with a visual and tactile reference to the region. Situated at a major pathway junction between the Active Nature, Arts Culture, Woodland Ramble and Sensory Therapeutic Spaces, the low stone totems will also function as seating within engaging story-based paving and shaded by a central specimen tree.

The Story Telling Chair (artist - Richard Yates) The power of storytelling on imagination, emotional connection, personal catharsis and general wellbeing for all ages is well documented. It brings friends, families and generations together. Imagine, then, the value of an artisan crafted wooden ‘storytelling chair’ under the canopy of the historic oak tree in Romsey Ecotherapy Park where storytellers of all ages can tell their tales (real and make-believe) to those listening and seated on mushroom-like wooden stools! Featuring carvings of local wildlife and books, the chair’s beauty as a work of art will add to the impressive array of Art in the Park.

‘Cycles’ (artist - Charlie Acquilina) Standing at two metres on the Sensory Therapeutic Space lawn and forged from stone, steel and copper, Cycles is (at one level) a depiction of the annual cycle that occurs in every garden. At another level, it represents the cycle we experience as we pass through life and engage with our surrounds. With different features on each face of the Macedon Ranges basalt stone base, copper and corten will interact with the basalt stone and oxidize over time to an orange brown and rich green patina respectively.

Portal’ (artist - Brigit Heller) Marking the entrance to the Romsey Ecotherapy Park, Portal will be visible from the road. The work, elegant rather than monumental, is situated near the park’s north-west entrance. It will entice visitors as well as passers-by to explore the park. Inspired by forms in nature, the work offers a connection between the infrastructure and the natural environment of the park. Soft forms and warm tones will complement the historic school building’s brickwork providing the work with a presence of its own. Portal will announce one’s entry to the special place in nature - Romsey Ecotherapy Park.

The men's stableford the same day went to Ed Godek 34 points, from Peter McGill 32.

Romsey Cricket Club has re-appointed Ben Way as captain coach for season 2020-2021.

Way is a former Victorian Country Cricket League captain and is rated as highly as any quality batsman in the GDCA. There was plenty of interest in leadership positions, with Peter Day being chairman of selectors.

Chris Burkett is vicecaptain of the McIntyre Cup side, with Jed Richardson skipper of the club's second XI. Paul Brady and Jason Day are joint captains of the club's thirds side.

Kyneton trainer Ted Grogan was not surprised three-year-old Ellenova improved considerably to notch up an impressive win at big odds last week.

"She's shown us heaps," Grogan said, discounting her two previous runs when she was not at peak fitness due to lack of jumpouts at Kyneton.

Jockey Zac Spain had the filly back near the rear of the field in the bet365 Top Tote Plus Maiden Plate fat Kyneton for much of the journey, but moved up quickly entering the straight and ran on strongly to win by 1.8 lengths.

"She's a lovely filly, and we are looking for her to have her next race at Kyneton on Sunday, October 4.

"Then we may look for a midweek meeting in town," Grogan said.

The trainer races Ellenova on lease in company with his partner Lisa Patton and son Matthew.

"It's not easy to get a good horse, and I've only got four in work at present.

Grogan moved from Cranbourne about four years ago, and has established stables on a 20-acre property at Green Hill. His last winner was also at Kyneton, in November last year when Evolvement won at odds of $61.

The Kyneton club conducted a nineevent program last Tuesday, its first for the 2020-21 season.

Knockouts at Kyneton Knockout finals in two annual events were completed at Kyneton Golf Club on Saturday.

The RSL Singles Knockout was a tight contest, with David Moore eventually defeating Louis Thompson on the 20th hole.

In contrast, the Doubles KO final ended much earlier, with a 4-2 result in favour of Mat Hodgkiss and Ross Foreman over Scott Murphy - Russ Turner.

In the individual men's stableford, Patrick Clohesy scored 37 points, two clear of Paul Tobin 35 (both 20 handicap).

Denise Murphy 30 points edged out Robyn MacRae on a countback in the women's event.

Nearest the pins were Col Cooney, Chris Lingard, Denise Murphy, Barry Murphy and Pete Robbins, with Lingard having the closest second shot on the 18th.

Doubles Knockout winners - Mat Hodgkiss and Ross Foreman.

Wednesday stableford: Peter Cameron 39 points (handicap 18), with Neil Watts and Ross Foreman NTPs.

Cricket set for return

Castlemaine District Cricket Association is looking to commence a modified 2020-2021 season at the end of October.

CDCA secretary Brian Brasher said the association was currently in talks with Mount Alexander Shire Council and member clubs about what the season would look like and what grounds would be available, but at this stage on Cricket Victoria recommendations they were looking at holding one-day matches only this season.

"The fixture will consist of one-day matches only, but this format will enable us to have some flexibility if any issues arise. Hopefully, all going well, we can complete a full home and away season and finals and finish up in March 2021 as scheduled," Brasher said.

The club will field men's, women's and junior competitions and will welcome senior sides from Maiden Gully CC into the CDCA for the first time this season.

The CDCA holds its next committee meeting tomorrow September 30 and aims to begin finalising plans and fixtures with a view to a potential start date of October 31.

Brasher said the competitions would have COVID-safe measures in place.

"Players won't be required to wear masks on the field, but they will be required to wear them off field and there will be no spectators under current restrictions," he said.

"There will also be small tweaks to the game such as no shining of the ball, regular cleaning of the ball and reduction of handling of the ball by umpires etc. to reduce contact," Brasher said.

A field of 24 ladies played stableford on Tuesday, with Judy Quick 33 points (25 handicap) four clear of Denise Murphy in A grade.

It has been a big few weeks around the Camp Reserve with the announcement of the 'Master Plan' to redevelop the facilities at Camp Reserve and numerous coaching appointments, including the announcement that Don Moran will lead the Magpies as senior coach again in 2021.

CFNC announced on Wednesday that former Under 18s coach Brodie Martin would also continue on the coaching staff in 2021 as senior assistant coach.

CFNC president Caleb Kuhle said Martin had moved out of the role of Under 18s coach after the cancellation the 2020 season and stepped into a senior assistant role under coach Don Moran as 'development coach'.

"Well done Brodie and we wish you the best in the new role," Kuhle said.

The club president also thanked the Committee of Management of the Camp Reserve with their breakthrough in getting the 'Master Plan' up.

"This would not happen without the hard work that this committee has done, this is a great leap forward for our community to have the best facilities possible for not only football and netball, but many other sporting and focus groups," he said. Kyneton training Kyneton Cricket Club is inviting current, new and former players to become involved in the lead-up to the 2020-2021 season.

Training begins this week for senior sides and some junior sides.

Training for seniors will be at 5.30pm tonight (Tuesday) and Thursday.

The Under 15s will turn out tonight at 4.30, and the U13s train tomorrow at the same time.

Under 17s training is on at 4.30pm on Thursday.

Tributes flow for ‘Deano’ Cricket legend made impact at all levels

Bill West Shockwaves have reverberated around the cricketing world and elsewhere with the sudden untimely death of Romsey resident Dean Jones, aged 59, in India on Thursday.

Tributes have poured in after news spread of Jones' death in Mumbai, where he was commentating on the Indian Premier League. He is believed to have suffered a major heart attack at the hotel where he was staying. Former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee tried desperately to revive him.

Jones became an almost larger than life figure on the international cricket scene, in Test arenas and specially in one-day international fixtures, where he revolutionised batting with his flamboyant attacking style and quick running between wickets.

He played 52 Tests for Australia, scoring 3631 runs at an average of 46.55, with 11 centuries and 14 fifties. He was part of the 1987 Australian team that won the ICC World Cup in 1987, and The Ashes in 1989.

His one-day international record of 6063 runs and seven centuries is awe-inspiring, and his epic 210 in the first Test in Chennai in 1986 is still the highest score by an Australian in India. Then Aussie coach Bob Simpson described it as the greatest innings he had seen.

Jones was always forthright, on and off the field, and one wonders if this did not always go down well with Victorian cricket officialdom.

His father Barney was a fierce leader at Carlton Cricket Club, and 'Deano' played there and his batting carried him into the Victorian side, and ultimately to the Test team.

AT LOCAL LEVEL The Jones family has lived in the centre of Romsey for more than 25 years, on a large residential property featuring a magnificent rose garden.

Devastated wife Jane and daughters, Isabella and Phoebe, have made statements in the wake of their husband and father's death.

"He leaves us with so many wonderful memories that will last forever. At this challenging time, when our grief is so raw, we have drawn much consolation from the many messages of goodwill and support from so many people around the world.

"We are overwhelmed by the scale of the response to the news of his death, and will forever be grateful for that," Jane said.

Rob McIntyre, president of the Gisborne District Cricketing Association and vice-president of the Victorian Country Cricket League, expressed his condolences on behalf of many cricketers and followers in the area.

He knew Dean Jones well, both having spent plenty of time at Romsey Park over the years.

"Just a great bloke to talk to, so passionate and always coming up with new ideas. He would join in cricket training sometimes, and played a few games with Romsey, fitting in so well."

Jones was a good footballer with the Ama-

teurs, and unsuccessful efforts were made to entice him to play with Romsey when he moved to the town.

McIntyre related how the outstanding golfer was once having a rare bad day on the course and he put his clubs down and came across to where some junior cricketers were training on the oval.

He provided a few tips and instructions, and departed, leading to one of the boys asking "Who was that?"

McIntyre's brother Peter, a leg-spinner who played two Tests for Australia, worked in the Jones' garden when the family moved to the town.

Jones retired from first class cricket at the age of 34, and Rob McIntyre - like many - remains puzzled why he never achieved captaincy or coaching roles in Victoria.

In the media world, Jones worked in radio and television, impacting his astute knowledge of the game and its participants.

Many of his old foes on the cricket field became lifelong friends, New Zealand fast bowler - Richard Hadlee - who had Christmas dinner in Romsey with the Jones family last year, being one of them.

Romsey Golf Club is deeply saddened by the passing of one of its long time and valued members.

'Deano' was club champion in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2017, and a member of the club's victorious Dalhousie district division 2 scratch pennant teams.

"The club will miss his competitiveness, passion, enthusiasm, generosity, willingness to encourage young players and positive attitude to our plans and works to improve both the course and Romsey Park," stated RGC president Tony Lakey.

Lakey described Jones as very down-toearth, who largely played midweek golf at Romsey and at Heathcote on Saturdays for a long period of time.

Romsey golfers have their own particular stories about 'Deano': They include walking across a couple of fairways to tell a joke, an "ideas man" who was always on he lookout for something to assist the club; watching a very young Michael McCarten playing a few shots and realising he was a left-handed using right-hand clubs; many impromptu golf lessons on the course.

Honours at Heathcote Bill West Heathcote Golf Club members gathered in large numbers and paid tribute to Dean Jones on Saturday.

Club stalwart and long-time outstanding player Larry Maxwell said he was honoured to know Jones well and have so many enjoyable times with him over the years.

The club intends to place a special plaque on the par-four sixth hole where Jones achieved the rare feat of scoring an albatross (hole-inone).

Maxwell said a white picket fence was expected to be erected around the putting practice greens, which will be named in recognition of Jones.

He recalled how Jones and equally competitive former Australian Test skipper Alan Border teamed up three times in a four-ball challenge at Heathcote, and he and fellow lowmarker Dave Clouston managed to defeat them three times.

Maxwell said Jones was very generous, including organising a major fundraiser for the fight against MS, and bringing celebrity speakers along to entertain the audience of 130.

Former Australian Test skipper and ace broadcaster Bill Lawry said he would be remembered for being the player he was, the personality.

"He wasn't everybody's cup of tea, but he certainly was for the majority."

‘Desperate to play’ Carracher to Gisborne District Cricket Association president Rob McIntyre (pictured) says players are "desperate to play sport after being starved of community competition for the past six months".

The GDCA intends to begin its season on Saturday October 17, with four rounds of one-day matches between its senior and junior clubs that are classed as being located in regional areas.

This short competition across four Saturdays will not be played for points.

Easing of COVID-19 restrictions in the metropolitan region and in Melton and Hume are awaited so GDCA clubs in those locations can participate.

McIntyre said it was very important for cricketers to take part in some form of competition.

"Our clubs have already seen increased interest in people wanting to play cricket, and this is reflected in a record 73 teams being nominated, up from 66 last season," he said.

"Some regular footballers who missed out on their season are

switching to cricket."

Several clubs will swing into full training this week.

HIT HARD FINANCIALLY Cricket Victoria has just issued a 25-page document of guidelines for clubs and associations to return to play.

McIntyre said the guidelines

restricting players from using changerooms and limiting access to social functions would impact heavily on their clubs' revenue.

"Clubs will also see a potential loss of sponsorship as local businesses struggle financially," he said.

"With this in mind, the GDCA has significantly reduced its club affiliation fees to ensue clubs can survive during this period."

The state government has assisted clubs and associations with funding grants to cover the loss of revenue and purchase disinfectant products and appropriate signage for venues.

Under the Cricket Victoria guidelines training will be conducted in groups of 10 to ensure any COVID-19 infection is confined to a particular group and does not impact on all players in a club.

Match day and training session protocols require participants to "Get in and Get Out'' - turn up just before a game or training begins and leave immediately afterwards.

At present, spectators will not be allowed to attend matches.

Stephen Carracher (pictured) has been appointed club coach for Malmsbury Cricket Club.

Carracher was a member of the Berries' premiership side last year, and due to his overwhelming passion, enthusiasm and depth of cricket knowledge, will be taking charge of training sessions and preparation for another season in the Gisborne District Cricket Association.

From junior cricket in Tasmania, he has been around cricket all his life. His father was a top cricketer, while the younger Carracher played for Essendon in District Cricket before coming to Malmsbury.

The Berries expect to field three senior sides this year, while junior boys and girl sides are not far away.

At last week's virtual Annual Meeting, the executive was returned unopposed. With extra players indicating an interest in playing this season, Malmsbury's prospects are looking good.
