Earlier this month MRSG president David Gormley-O’Brien estimated a four-year delay on advice that the desired site would require legislative amendments as it was land held under a perpetual licence issued to Hancock Victoria Plantations.

“While the analysis so far shows that the plantation site is suitable for such a project in technical, financial and potentially planning terms, the project requires formal

access to the land, which is set aside for forestry purposes,” he told stakeholders.

“Use of the land for energy production will require a legislative amendment, which the state government has informed us is not a short to medium term priority on the legislative program.”

Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas's office confirmed last week, "These legislative amendments are not anticipated in

the short term".

It's the second major snag for the project more than 10 years in planning.

A Liberal state government-imposed blanket ban on windfarms across Macedon Ranges hindered plans back in 2014, which a later Labor state government planning scheme amendment partially lifted to accommodate the project.

When the Whiteman family moved from inner city Melbourne to rural Chintin in the Macedon Ranges in 2018, they had no plans to become leaders in the lavender oil industry.

With a desire to create a sustainable, mixed farming enterprise, Stuart and Sonia set about planting 12,000 plus lavender plants at Chin Chin Farm with the intention to not only provide a food source for their seven beehives, and to complement the growing herd of Aussie White sheep, but to produce food-grade lavender oil as a supplementary source of income.

Fast forward only two years and the Whitemans attended their first Lavender Growers Association Conference held recently in Hahndorf, South Australia.

To their delight and surprise their lavender oil took out the prestigious Rosemary Holmes Sonia Whiteman harvests the lavender at Chin Award for their Lavender Chin Farm at Chintin.

Angustifolia Essential Oil. “To be recognised so early in our journey is truly humbling, and to be awarded this honour named after one of the stalwarts of the industry is inspiring us to keep going," Sonia said after receiving the award.

"It’s unusual to produce oil of this quality with such young plants, but we believe that it’s in the way we grow them.”

Rosemary Holmes is legendary in the lavender industry as an early adopter of commercial lavender growing and is a founding member of The Lavender Growers Association.

What’s next for the Whitemans?

“Our climate is perfect for Australian native bush foods, so we are working on a program to plant and harvest a variety of plants for both their oil and their leaves. Everything that we do on the farm is designed to complement. The sheep fertilise the soils and keep the grass down, the bees pollinate the plants and the plantings regenerate the soil structures.”

Budget priorities

Kindergarten upgrades, Romsey Ecotherapy Park additions, community climate change action plans and energy efficient upgrades from part of Macedon Ranges Shire Council' draft budget for 2021/22.

Council endorsed the draft budget and Revenue and Rating Plan 2021-2025 last week for public consultation.

Mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson encouraged residents to have their say on the documents.

“Councillors and council officers have spent many hours developing a budget that both continues to provide the additional support needed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but also looks for new opportunities to support the whole community into the future," she said.

“We’ve worked hard to prioritise initiatives that support current and future community needs in an environmentally and economically sustainable way, and we want your comments, ideas and suggestions before finalising the plan,” Cr Anderson said.

Some of the initiatives include building works to the value of $4.965 million, including $348,000 for roof works at Kyneton Museum and $123,320 towards council building energy and water efficiency upgrades.

The also includes $7.068M for roads infrastructure, $1.389M for footpaths and cycleways, and $6.7M for recreation, leisure and community facilities, including $5.2 million for the Macedon Ranges Regional

A $957,000 spend on parks, open spaces and streetscapes includes $98,000 for new entrance landscaping for Gisborne Botanic Gardens and $70,000 towards the final stages of the Romsey Ecotherapy Park.

A rate rise of 1.5 per cent is proposed, in line with the Victorian Government’s rate cap.

This year's budget also includes a list of projects that missed out on funding but are being considered for future years, which includes two staff dedicated to climate change initiatives.

The Draft Annual Budget 2021/22 and Draft Revenue and Rating Plan 2021-2025 are available for inspection at council’s customer service centres in Gisborne, Kyneton, Romsey and Woodend. The documents can be viewed online at mrsc.vic.gov.au/yoursay Submissions are due to the council by 5pm on June 8. Residents who submit feedback have the option to present at a submitters committee meeting at 7pm on June 16. For details on how to make a submission, visit the council's website.

The budget will be considered for adoption at the Special Council Meeting scheduled for 11am on June 29 at the Gisborne Administration Centre.

The Community Vision, Council Plan and Financial Plan will also be released for community consultation at a later date.

Connect Mount Alexander re-launch

Macedon Ranges Shared Trails project will gain a large share of funds from three of Macedon Ranges Shire Council's open space reserves despite pushback from East Ward councillors.

The $9.75 million project will deliver a 24-kilometre trail for walking, running and cycling, stretching from Woodend to Riddells Creek, but Cr Geoff Neil argued the east would only benefit from a small portion of the trail.

The budget allocates $300,000 from central, $350,000 from east and $350,000 from south open space reserve funds.

Backed by Cr Bill West, Cr Neil sought to reduce the allocation from the east reserve to $54,000 and have the remaining funds drawn from the central reserve.

"Of that project we've only got a 50-100m footpath and I don't think $350,000 is an appropriate amount for that," he said.

"The open space reserve from the East Ward should not be used to support recreational activities in other areas of the shire."

While the trail falls largely outside of the East Ward, other councillors argued its resi-

dents would equally benefit from the connectivity.

"It's not just about 50-100m of pavement.

The whole big picture point of this big project is for connections," Cr Janet Pearce said.

"You're not going to walk, run or cycle from Riddells Creek 50-100m and then stop and turn back. The whole idea is that you are going to connect through to (other towns and areas)."

Cr Jennifer Anderson said some of the strongest support for the project had come from the east.

"As a councillor of eight and half years, I would say it's the Riddells Creek residents that have been the strongest advocates for this connecting project," she said.

"I think they would be disappointed if this project halted over us trying to decide which reserve we were going to go through."

Cr Annette Death was not present at the meeting.

The original budget allocations remain but residents will have the chance to add to the debate as the council begins public consultation.

BAROSSA’S BEST

Local residents living with dementia are benefiting from Central Highlands Rural Health’s recent expansion of the Treehouse program to Trentham.

Originally opening in Kyneton in March 2017, the Treehouse is a supportive and safe meeting place for people with dementia to socialise and take part in activities that promote independence and wellbeing, while providing carers the opportunity to take time out.

The recent launch in Trentham means residents from the Macedon Ranges and Hepburn Shire can access a client driven, evidence-based program delivered by experienced staff with expertise in dementia.

Lewis, 73, has been attending the Treehouse in Trentham since its launch.

He heard about the program through his carer Chris, who attends one of Central Highlands Rural Health’s support groups for carers of people living with dementia.

“The Treehouse is welcoming and fun. I like talking to different people and I look forward to it each week. I enjoy the banter about the footy and have made some good friends, even if they don’t barrack for Collingwood!” Lewis said.

Lewis’ carer Chris is happy to see him socialise with others.

“During the pandemic it was really hard; we couldn’t see friends and we both missed human contact. When Lewis first started coming to the Treehouse I was at a bit of a loss and not sure what to do with my free time. But now I’m making the most of it and go for walks and visit cafes,” Chris said.

Supported by the Australian Government Department of Health, the Treehouse at Trentham is a Social Support Group that aims to support independence, reduce social isolation, maintain social and community connections and support participants and their carers to live well.

Central Highlands Rural Health’s Board Chair Peter Matthews believes the Treehouse program makes it easier for people to maintain their roots at home and in the community: “Social connectivity plays a really important part in helping people with dementia to remain independent and living well. We’re really happy to see the Treehouse expand to Trentham allowing more people in our community to benefit from the supportive program,” he said.

Lisa Dennis Saltgrass, a Castlemaine sustainability podcast proudly supported by Mount Alexander Sustainability Group and MAINfm 94.9, has gone global!

The podcast was recently picked up and highlighted by the New York Times when it ran a list of five environment podcasts to listen to on Earth Day. Saltgrass is the brainchild of MASG team member and long-time MAINfm presenter Alison Hanly.

Allie said she wanted to create a podcast that focused on salt of the earth people and grassroots change.

The show was born out of frustration at watching the Australian government consistently make decisions that favoured the fossil fuel industry, even as the majority of Australians said they were worried about climate change.

"It became more and more apparent that the answer would have to come from the ground up, that is, every day people doing what they could in their region to make a change," she said.

"Climate change can be overwhelming, paralysing and many people don't know where to start. I wanted to highlight some of the positive things that everyday people can do to make a difference by sharing inspiring and relatable stories.

"We chat in depth to farmers, engineers, community workers, healthcare professionals, artists, activists, children and passionate retirees. Topics include

MRSG vice-president Bruce Mildenhall told the Express the group expected the planning scheme change would allow automatic land access but understood it was a more complicated process.

“We have run into this roadblock but we are still hopeful. We've been at it a long time and it’s a big project but Rome wasn’t built in a day. It has been heartening to see the community support for this project," he said.

The group expects the facility would operate on a scale capable of producing power equivalent to the entire Macedon Ranges Shire household consumption.

The project falls in line with initiatives of Macedon Ranges Shire Council which, in March, joined 32 other Victorian councils in declaring a climate emergency.

Projects of the council so far include

environmental building upgrades, involvement in a council renewable energy buying group to secure 100 per cent of council’s electricity from renewable sources, and a Cool Changes program to develop climate change action plans for each town.

Mayor Cr Jennifer Anderson said there had been strong community support for the energy park project.

"We are trying to drive change but now unfortunately, at this stage, this community MRSG project has to be parked," Cr Anderson said.

"It's a shame that it has stalled but it will prompt the council to investigate if there are other things we can do to get us to be less reliant on fossil fuels."

MRSG says its work in promoting sustainability across the shire will continue as it awaits the next step in the energy park project.

Solar win

A free 6.6kW solar power system has been installed on Chewton Primary School funded by the MASH Community Solar Bulk-Buy, which will reduce the school’s reliance on grid electricity by about 36 per cent.

Electricity bill savings of about $1000 a year from the system will go towards building an indigenous food garden to teach students about local flora.

“As a 5-Star Resource Smart School, sustainability is a core part of our work and key to everything we do,” said school principal Bernadette McKenna.

“We’re delighted to have this new solar system for the financial savings it will provide as well as the carbon emissions savings, which I understand are equivalent to planting about 50 trees a year.

“In addition to the indigenous food garden, we also want to use the savings to install a watering system with drip lines to reduce the amount of water used in the garden.

“Upgrading the school’s insulation and lighting to reduce our energy usage and carbon footprint are two other items on our list.”

This is the 13th solar system gifted to schools and community groups in the last three years through money raised through the MASH bulk-buys.

Becoming a greener business – and cutting your power bills – by installing solar panels has just got a whole lot more attractive with the announcement of a new rebate from the Victorian Government.

Businesses who own their premises – as well as those who rent – will soon be able to apply the Solar for Business rebate worth up to $3500 for systems sized up to 30kW. Applications will open from late May. Solar Victoria, which administers the rebate program, has just updated its website to say that “we encourage eligible business owners to reach out to authorised solar retailers now to get a quote, so they are ready to apply when the customer portal opens”. We’re guessing they are saying this as they expect the rebate to be quite popular!

Through the MASH bulk-buy, we find the types of businesses who get the best financial return from solar include those that operate 9am-5pm. That’s because they’re using power from the solar panels instead of buying from the grid – that’s where the biggest savings are to be had.

A great example we’ve just run for a small café in Strathdale shows a breakeven of 2.2 years on a 10kW system. This is based on 50 per cent of the power from the panels used in the business during its daytime operations.

With the business solar rebate of $3500, this café could shave another four to five months off the breakeven bringing it to less than two years. Plus over the system’s lifetime the greenhouse gas emissions savings will be equivalent to planting 83 acres of forest – a point many customers will appreciate!

It is important to be aware that one of the eligibility criteria is that you must operate from premises that are non-residential and employ at least one person, not including the business owner, and less than 20

"I don't mind working outside,” he said.

“The weather can be a bit of a problem because they don't postpone funerals for bad weather so you've got to be prepared.

“On the odd occasion it's snowed and I've still had to come out and break the hard ground under the snow and dig away.

“When there were fires lapping Daylesford about six years ago, I was one of the few people police let through the roadblocks because I had to prepare a site. By the time the funeral took place the fire was pretty well contained.”

And for anyone who wonders about local spooks, Mr Graham assures, he has “never seen or heard anything that couldn’t be explained”.

While Mr Graham is retiring, he said he has no plans to leave the local area and plans to stop by the cemetery every now and then.

Alan Graham never expected to become one of God’s gardeners.

He has dug more than 4000 graves in Daylesford, Trentham and Glenlyon cemeteries over the past 42 years and is one of the last to have done it all by hand.

Turning 66 this month, the North Drummond gravedigger is now hanging up his pick and shovel with pride.

He owes his career start to a man he came across in the back of a ute eating a sandwich at Daylesford Cemetery.

Hunting for work, Mr Graham had just applied to a local abattoir with a long waiting list and asked the man if he knew of any local jobs.

The man was a gravedigger and offered his own job.

“You either go home covered in blood or go home covered in mud. I thought mud was the better option,” Mr Graham said.

"I always thought of it as a temporary job until something came along but 42 years down the track I am still doing it."

Hepburn appoints CEO

Bradley Thomas has been appointed Hepburn Shires Council's chief executive officer.

Mr Thomas began work with the shire in January 2019 as director of community and corporate serves and has been interim CEO since January 2021.

Mayor Lesley Hewitt said Mr Thomas had proven himself an effective leader and was appointed following a national recruitment campaign that attracted a high standard of candidates.

He has worked at both the City of Greater Bendigo and Mount Alexander Shire Council in leadership roles. He holds a Master of Business Administration and is a chartered accountant.

He is also the president of FinPro - the peak body of Victorian Local Government Finance Professionals.

Fatality at Macedon

Police are investigating a fatal crash in Mount Macedon last Thursday evening.

Emergency services were called to Mount Macedon Road to reports a car had crashed into a tree about 8.45pm.

A male driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined and investigations are ongoing.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Man sentenced for home invasion

A man has been sentenced to six years’ and two months imprisonment for an aggravated home invasion in Gisborne, in search of a cannabis crop.

The man in 30s entered the property in January last year, with two other alleged offenders, wearing face coverings and carrying firearms.

The trio confronted the homeowner, demanding information on a cannabis crop and striking him with a gun, before demanding his car keys and money, and directing him inside the house at gunpoint. There was no cannabis crop on the property. The homeowner's partner was also approached during the home invasion before the trio stole a vehicle from the property and left.

Police made their arrest in April last year. The two other alleged offenders have elected to stand trial.

Local MP Mary-Anne Thomas joined Macedon Ranges Council representatives and community members to announce funding for the final stage of the Romsey Ecotherapy Park.

Romsey's ecotherapy multipurpose nature park has taken another step forward.

Minister for Regional Development and Member for Macedon Mary-Anne Thomas yesterday announced a $615,000 grant from the Regional Infrastructure Fund - Stimulus Round, to support the long held community vision.

“This has been one of my favourite projects in the Macedon Ranges and is all about ensuring Romsey locals have a beautiful public space to meet and connect in, as well as attracting visitors to Romsey from further afield," Ms Thomas said.

“Congratulations to the dedicated volunteers who have worked so hard to make this project a reality – it’s been wonderful to be on this journey with you and witness the dream come to fruition.”

The Romsey Ecotherapy Park is being delivered in three stages with the state government already investing $718,000 for stage two and $200,000 for stage one, bringing the total state investment to $1.53 million.

Stage three will add a Woodland Ramble and space to encourage nature play, including a hut-building frame that will complement the climbing forest for older children and adults.

Other features of the park being delivered under stage two include a sensory space as well as an arts and culture area that will be accessible for the community to use.

Construction on the project is due to begin in June this year and is expected to create 12 jobs.

Restoration works to begin Restoration works to the Kyneton Town Hall facade are expected to begin this month.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council received $1,441,261 through the Australian Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program, allocating $632,989 to the restoration of the Kyneton Town Hall facade, including the installation of feature lighting. The council is also funding an additional $300,000 to undertake targeted restoration works to the chimneys, window eaves, gutters and stormwater.

Director Assets and Operations Shane Walden said improvements to the hall ex-

terior facade will complement and enhance the heritage aesthetic of the Kyneton township streetscape and ensure its longevity.

“Heritage architects will oversee the works on the facade. Council’s heritage advisor has approved aesthetic considerations, including paint colours, to ensure the history of this building is respected and enhanced,” he said.

Works may disrupt pedestrian movement at the front of the building, and alternate routes will be signed.

Improvements to the building’s facade will contribute to the continued use of the Kyneton Town Hall.

Helping carers

Local charity PS My Family Matters, which offers support to families caring for loved ones with mental illness, launched its complimentary support program ‘Good Space’ in the middle of 2020.

The aim of the program is to provide practical and emotional support to local families.

"We are aware that the last year has placed great strain on the mental wellbeing of many in our community," said Tamara Wilson, president of PS My Family Matters.

"Our Good Space package, is designed to help our carers focus on their personal mental and emotional wellbeing."

The Good Space program has been made possible due to the generous support of the Bendigo Bank, Tobin Brothers and the Victorian Government.

The program features a range of emotional and practical support elements, including complimentary respite items to support carers and make their lives a little easier.

"We want to ensure that families in the Ranges who are impacted by mental illness know that we're there for them," Tamara said.

Tylden Fire Brigade has been given a welcome kickstart with a generous donation from the Trentham and Districts Community Bank.

Bank board members Charl Parris, Helen Macdonald and Stan Falloon this month presented brigade members with a cheque for $890 to cover a large part of the cost of replacing batteries for the brigade’s three defibrillator units, which are located on each of its vehicles.

Brigade secretary Nick Mayhew thanked them for their generosity and noted that this was not the first time that Tylden CFA had received funding from the community bank, which had previously assisted with the cost of upgrading the brigade-owned field command vehicle.

"The grant means that funds raised from the community by the brigade, which would have been used to cover this expense, can now be put aside for the future upgrading of the brigade-owned tanker," Mr Mayhew said.

Building rainbow bridges

An exhibition opened last week in Kyneton that brings together the voices of both young lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex people and those older members of the LGBTIQA+ community in a way not seen before in the Macedon Ranges.

Intergenerational art project ‘Rainbow Bridges’, which was funded by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, is a poignant collection of photographs and video clips created by local community members in collaboration with Woodendbased Tracey Strong of Strong Productions and Kyneton photographer Lakshal (Lucky) Perera.

The artists featured in the exhibition, most of whom were new to filmmaking and photography, had the opportunity to learn from Tracey and Lucky and tap into in their wealth of artistic knowledge and skills to gain a better understanding of the audiovisual creative process.

The exhibition was coordinated by Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health’s WayOut program and the Country LGBTI Inclusion Program and set out to build new relationships within the LGBTIQA+ community through mentoring, positive role modelling and the sharing of LGBTI history.

“The Rainbow Bridges project is an intergenerational journey of curiosity, selfreflection and discovery centred around the LGBTIQA+ lived experience in regional Victoria,” project coordinator Belinda Brain said.

“There are few organised situations in which older and younger LGBTIQA+ people have the opportunity to come together and a build a sense of shared belonging.”

Ash Tree Studio at Taradale is hosting Girls Act Good with their second Script in Hand production, Village Wooing, this coming Friday and Saturday.

Girls Act Good are a very enthusiastic group of young women who were introduced to Ash Tree Studio's Tony Redmond through La Mama Theatre.

Mr Redmond said they had brought two full productions to Taradale in the past couple of years and Village Wooing would be the second of what they called their 'Script in Hand' presentations.

"It is their response to me expressing my wish to host some play readings," he said.

"They go to quite a bit of effort to work up the piece but stop short of full rehearsals - so you get a production concept and a wellrehearsed reading.

"Village Wooing is a great little piece written by George Bernard Shaw.

"Now out of copyright, the girls were free to play around with it to their hearts' content and they have!"

Macedon Ranges residents will get a rare opportunity to follow Alice and the White Rabbit down the rabbit hole for a magical evening of high tea and high jinx at a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party.

The after-dark event, to be held on Saturday June 19 at the Kyneton Mechanics Institute, is set in a colourful wonderland designed by renowned international film set designer and local resident, Leslie Binns, and will feature entertainment by Cassidy La Creme.

Animus has also designed a signature, magic potion cocktail especially for the evening.

Guests are encouraged to dress up, whether it be as the Matter Hatter or in their best cocktail wear. Prizes for best costume, maddest hat and most splendid cocktail outfit will be awarded.

The special event aims to raise funds for Kyneton Community House’s weekly community lunch.

“This two-course healthy lunch is available once a week to all Kyneton folk, and aims to help support those who are finding things a bit tough," KCH director Claire Rawlinson said.

"With the cessation of Job Keeper and the roll back of Job Seeker supports there is a lot of pressure on so many people in our community, and getting a bit of relief through the lunches program has become essential.”

In previous years the community house has held a long lunch as the major fundraising effort for the program, but due to COVID-19 restrictions, last year’s event was cancelled.

Ms Rawlinson said organisers are excited to be able to bring the community together with this extra special event.

Included in the ticket price will be high teastyle food, a cocktail upon arrival, door prizes, entertainment from Cassidy La Crème and an auction with local products and services.

What is it that an injury lawyer does?

Horses as helpers

through regulating their breathing. They are gently encouraged to be aware of their emotions and their stress level before, during and after their time in the horseyard. Focusing on the horse is often calming in itself. What is learnt in the horseyard can then flow on to other relationships and situations in the person’s life.

Interacting with a horse also gives the participant an awareness of another’s state and the effect their own internal state (feelings of calm, happiness, excitement, anxiety, anger, etc) is having on them.

The horse will always respond authentically, giving clear and non-judgemental feedback. Participants are coached in how to read the horse’s signals and body language. When the horse shows that it is feeling calm and safe with the person, it gives them a sense of acceptance and safety and can improve self-worth.

Unexpected calm and focus Elizabeth says that her experience in the horseyard with young people and children who experience anxiety and have difficulty regulating their emotions, has been consistent. They have shown gentleness and been able to calm themselves in a way that has often surprised and moved their parents/carers.

Children whose concentration is found to be poor in other settings often demonstrate great care and attention when working with the horses (for example grooming them).

A cold, blue lady The Australian Yoga Institute in Woodend was long known as The Blue Lady Studio because of a standout figure in the residential area of the town.

This sculpture was constructed by local artist Anthony Syndicas. It stood outside Jahne Hope Williams's studio on her farm and then came with Jahne to Woodend when she moved the studio there.

"I often would see people stopping to take photographs, and the information centre sent people to it when they wanted to take a photo of a local sculpture," Jahne said.

"It became not only a local landmark, it was the signature of our studio. People might not know yoga, my hat or me, but everyone knew the Blue Lady. Even though she has not stood here for a couple of years, people still remember her…"

One cold afternoon someone wrapped a scarf around The Blue Lady's neck but she needed more than a scarf to protect her. She fell to bits one freezing night leaving only a pile of rubble, but the plinth is waiting, just in case an artist out there sees this and also mourns the loss, Jahne said.

Equine-assisted therapy and narrative therapy form a powerful combination for assisting people with a range of issues including anxiety, stress, depression and ASD. Elizabeth Hannah uses this approach with her participants at Black Horse Therapies.

Here she explains some of the background to those therapies...

Horseyard reflections This therapeutic approach involves interacting with a horse and then reflecting on the experience. This reflection may be done verbally by the participant, but there is never any pressure on them to put their experiences into words. It may be done through listening to the observations of the therapist and support person attending the session, or privately at home. It may be done through writing or drawing.

New stories of identity These observations and reflections form the story of what took place in the yard. The participant often discovers that they have strengths and abilities (such as being gentle, patient and caring or being assertive and a strong leader) that they, and others, were unaware of. These stories allow the person to form a new sense of self-identity (how they see themselves) and to build self-esteem and confidence.

Emotional regulation During activities with horses, participants experience a sense of safety and connection in a situation that they may initially have found challenging. They practise finding a place of calm through focusing on the horse and perhaps

Buda Historic Home and Garden Do you love our heritage? Arts and culture? Gardening? Or simply meeting new people and being involved as part of a team? Buda Historic Home and Garden is actively looking for new volunteers to help in a variety of interesting and stimulating areas of work.

Buda was the home of noted Hungarian silversmith Ernest Leviny and his family. Two generations of the Leviny family lived there continuously for 118 years, from the goldrush era until 1981, and the property is unique because it houses a collection of Australian artworks including those by Ernest and five of his talented daughters. The house and garden were opened to the public in 1982 as a house museum and Buda’s volunteers have been instrumental in the day to day running of the organisation ever since. Buda is indebted to its dedicated volunteers who contribute to making it a great place.

Volunteers specialise in many different areas, including reception and giftshop, gardening, house maintenance and collection, tour guiding, administration, Buda functions and events.

Here is an example of the reward and appreciation Buda volunteers receive.

Buda is a charitable not-for-profit organisation supported by Mount Alexander Shire Council and is recognised as an important heritage and cultural asset of Victoria.

Castlemaine SES The Castlemaine SES covers territory right across Mount Alexander Shire so you can be called out far and wide in an emergency.

People from the age of 16 years can become a member but until people are 18, work is basically training and gaining skills under supervision. Once a member turns 18, he or she can become fully operational.

The upper age for members has no limit. Castlemaine even recently had a member in his 90s. Of course, not all members are operational. There is a a variety of roles that can be filled including fundraising and public relations.

Castlemaine Lions Club Becoming a volunteer and a member of a service club has great benefits. Take the Castlemaine Lions club for example.

Becoming a member not only increases your base of friends and acquaintances, it gives you the opportunity to 'do something' by giving back to the community.

Many local groups and causes have greatly benefited from Lions Club fundraising.

The Castlemaine club's biggest fundraiser each year is its April Swap Meet. The Lions are helped out in the organisation of it by other clubs and groups who in turn, are given their rightful share of the profits.

All funds the Lions raise go back to help others. For example, some of the most recent donations from the

Lions' fundraising efforts went to Ellery House for a new wheelchair purchase.

Another to benefit from Lions' fundraising is the Castlemaine hospital, which most recently purchased new equipment for the operating theatre through a club donation.

Castlemaine Lions holds just one meeting a month so the nitty-gritty of the club doesn't take up too much of members' time. In fact, when it comes to meetings, the members call the tune so they suit! Have a look at the Lions' advert in this Volunteers Week feature for contact details if you would like to find out more about joining up. It is a club that suits members of all ages.

Last year, we recognised the important role that volunteers played while we were in the grips of the coronavirus pandemic.

Volunteers stepped up to help deliver food packages, check-in on vulnerable community members and assist in the health response to the pandemic. It showed us how flexible, adaptable and vital our volunteers are to our community, even during the toughest days of the coronavirus response.

I want to again give a heartfelt thank you to all volunteers in the region. The central Victorian community has always had a strong commitment to volunteering and last year was no exception. I know from talking with many of these organisations, and their volunteers, the pride and pleasure they get from contributing towards building and supporting a strong, inclusive and vibrant community.

There is no doubt that the coronavirus pandemic fundamentally changed volunteering as we know it. But service organisations across central Victoria have met the challenge head on, adapting delivery models to continue to serve the needs of our communities and constantly evolving to meet new restrictions and requirements.

It is also important, now, as our lives begin to resume some sense of normalcy, to recognise the role that community organisations and the numerous volunteers who support them are continuing to have in reconnecting, rebuilding and re-establishing services and events in our region.

There is something beautiful about being around community members who are passionate about working towards a common greater good. I encourage you to think about volunteering, or if you are not able, to think about supporting service organisations in our region.

Many provided invaluable community services last year, while others did it tough and are on their own road to recovery. If we can all try to support an organisation that supported us, then we are all better off.

There's an interesting world awaiting when you become a volunteer with the SES. Castlemaine SES controller Paul Fitzpatrick said the door was always open for new members to join up.

"In the SES you have a lot of variety, learn new skills and help the community," Paul said.

"The work is very satisfying...you help out people in need, people who might be in a bit of a pickle and can't help themselves."

When you join the SES you study a fundamental training package that can be completed in a month or two. After that time you get a pager and will be on call to attend incidents.

All your personal protective gear is provided, as is ongoing support and training.

Kyneton Community House Many programs run by Kyneton Community House could not be run without the tireless dedication of volunteers.

In 2020, KCH's volunteers truly went above and beyond jumping into action when it was most needed.

From growing the vegetables to cooking to serving, the energy of KCH volunteers, their good will and warm spirit really carried many through in hard times.

Castlemaine Historical Society Castlemaine Historical Society is a run entirely by volunteers who are committed to providing high-quality archive and local history research facilities. The society's volunteers carry out a variety of tasks such as family history research, proof reading, data entry, administrative duties and garden maintenance. Members of the public who visit the historical society to do research are assisted by enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers. Information from the society's archives is made available to researchers by the work of volunteers who proof read and compile indexes. An example of information available is the Bradfield Database. This database has more than 13,000 entries and consists of items of news that were of interest to

Ray Bradfield, and collected by him over many years.

Volunteers also work on the general database and currently there are more than 70,000 entries available to researchers.

This database can be used by researchers for information on the people, events, buildings and organizations that contributed and continue to contribute to the history of Castlemaine and district.

Currently Castlemaine Historical Society needs volunteers to do indexing, become tour guides, carry out family history research and provide front of house support which would include receptionist duties.

Each year, volunteers dedicate more than 600 million hours to help others. Mount Alexander Shire is no exception, with numerous not-for-profit organisations relying on volunteers to provide services and support to the community.

"We would not be able to operate many of our programs without our fantastic volunteers," said Martyn Shaddick, manager at Castlemaine Community House.

"We rely on more than 10 volunteers to provide the community lunches in Castlemaine and Maldon each week, along with volunteers to staff our reception and work in the Community Gardens."

The theme for National Volunteer Week 2021 is Recognise. Reconnect. Reimagine.

“This theme is so relevant this year," said Amy Atkinson, coordinator at Maldon Neighbourhood Centre.

“We want to thank our many volunteers for sticking with us through the challenging COVID shutdowns and welcome them back now we are delivering all programs again."

Volunteering is a great way to meet people and stay fit, but it also provides new experience, skills and pathways to employment.

“An exciting new opportunity for volunteers is the expansion of the community gardens network across the shire, thanks to the Food Thank You to all of our volunteers!

CHIRP Community Health recognises the generous contribution of volunteers this National Volunteer Week.

CEO Di Couch describes volunteers as an integral part of the organisation.

“Our 81 volunteers assist with administration and support programs such as walking groups, tai chi groups, youth mentoring, companion walking, strength training, community friends, respect ambassadors, nordic pole walking and housing,” she said.

“A big thank you to every one of our volunteers for their contribution in creating a healthier community in the Mount Alexander Shire.

“Our community has a rich legacy of volunteerism and it’s been heartening to see the ongoing support from our volunteers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of our volunteers took up informal roles to help others during the pandemic while taking care to stay safe. Value underestimated

Ray Brindle, Malmsbury I read in the Midland Express (May 11) that Andrew Avent wants to clear rural roadside verges from fence to fence.

I recall a certain US President who similarly thought that forest fires could be prevented by clearing vegetation away. But picture Macedon Ranges without roadside trees – only to discover what we had lost and what little we had gained! Joni Mitchell wrote a song about that, you might remember.

When I was a research manager at the Australian Road Research Board, we had a project that looked into the value and necessity of retaining roadside flora – from understorey to canopy trees. We underestimate the amount of original flora that exists in roadsides (and railway reserves), and its value to native animals and birds.

Despite the depredations of 'maintenance' and well-meaning but often clumsy fire management, road reserves play a major role in sustaining biodiversity. Added up, they contain a significant percentage of the state’s remnant flora, from native orchids to large trees, and often are the only place in farming country where you will find groups of trees that existed before colonisation.

The impact of that band of trees along roads through cleared farmland is fragile.

To argue that roadside trees can be replaced by new trees planted by landholders is not only unrealistic, it is also illogical because it would not remove the claimed fire risk, as anyone who has been anywhere near a wildfire would know.

Roadside trees also provide habitat and movement corridors for native fauna. They have immeasurable landscape value.

The reality is that the arguments about

These pockets of land often contain the oldest trees and thick habitat that retains soil moisture and reduces wind speeds, and are frequently missing from the landowners’ properties. Clearing the verges would result in the loss of this biome.

Residents sought, unsuccessfully, to protect our verge over 25 years ago, all vegetation was finally removed before we came to live here. The cost of revegetating the verge would be prohibitive now. We find tiny birds rarely cross our road: some species haven’t been seen on one side of the road since Ash Wednesday.

At the top of the mountain, with the removal of dead 45m tall trees along the verge, many species were usurped, like bees, sugar gliders and a banded mid-sized mammal. These trees were a pivot-point for black cockatoos that now must descend into gardens to rest, feed and launch off to their intended destination.

Fire travels across bare land at phenomenal speeds, as we saw on Black Saturday and subsequent bushfires in our local area.

We all need to understand the urgency of habitat protection in a climate emergency.

Let’s not create more bare land.

In summary, broadscale clearing is not only nonsensical, it is contrary to state environmental and fire risk management policies and principles.

exotic grasses with large biomass. Cypress hedges planted less than 5m from boundary fencelines are a fire and environmental hazard, and a lopping cost to ratepayers. Would the CFA advise against planting a conifer monoculture on boundary lines?

Newham Landcare wants to work with the CFA and council on fuel reduction and habitat protection on roadsides. Our rural roadsides are an environmental asset. Let the conversation begin!

Andrew Avent is motivated by his concerns as a volunteer firefighter, however the Express’s failure to check other viewpoints invites controversy. He focusses on the 2015 planned fuel reduction burn by DELWP that went out of control in the Cobaw State Forest. Following that fire the Three Chain Road Fire Risk Mitigation Action Plan was developed with a working group of CFA and local brigades, VicRoads, Three Chain Road residents, landcare groups and MRSC. Readers may find the 2019 report instructive (online at MRSC).

We agree with Mr Avent in urging locals to respond to the council’s draft Roadside Conservation Management Plan – it is well-researched and balances protection of the important ecological values within the roadsides with fire risk mitigation and road safety.

Contrary to Mr Avent’s statement, roadsides have never been clearways; they contain very old trees and complex understorey vegetation. Suggestions to clear roadsides are impractical and illegal under both federal and Victorian state laws.

Clearing roadside vegetation to plant inside fencelines is no solution. Roadside native vegetation is often all that is left for animals, insects and birds to safely move across a fractured landscape, and critical habitat for the survival of threatened flora and fauna such as the brush-tailed phascogale. A recent MRSC/Newham Landcare spotlighting project proved this by finding more animals on roadsides in the Cobaw Biolink than on Mount Macedon.

Planting a windbreak inside the boundary can never match the remnant roadside for complexity and value for native animals, however we encourage landholders to support these roadside corridors by planting additional local indigenous flora species on their land.

Castlemaine Steiner School and Kindergarten Class three year is an eventful year in the life of students at Castlemaine Steiner School and Kindergarten.

Children enter into class three, aged eight - an important developmental transition in their lives. In Steiner Education, the developmental changes at this age are recognised as a form of ‘threshold crossing', marking a child’s burgeoning awareness of the immensity of the world in which they live. This growing awareness can be quite unsettling for many young people. Thus, there are a number of features incorporated into Steiner curriculum at this level aimed at easing this transition.

One strategy is the strong focus placed on food production and harvesting, and building and shelters. Across the year, students learn about horticulture and agriculture and different approaches to producing food, as well as a multicultural

history of approaches to building shelters and homes.

Through their learning, they gain an appreciation for the abundant life-sustaining gifts from the earth that feed and nourish them.

Steiner students enjoy large school grounds nestled in a bush setting about five minutes from the Castlemaine township. It is an area rich in Indigenous cultural history, fascinating European and Chinese pioneer history, with many remnant artefacts from the gold rush era.

Class three students are always excited to learn about how the land on which they live, nourished and sustained human communities through time. The combined sense of connection with the land and respect for a collective ancestral history can be deeply reassuring for children as they awaken to the vast world beyond the small family-oriented

world of early childhood.

There are many other wonderful features of class three Steiner curriculum and it can be a great time to transition into Steiner education. Academically, this year begins to align with mainstream literacy and numeracy levels and the many fantastic specialist subjects wrap around the developing child to give them ample opportunity to find their strengths, challenges and new interests.

Girton Grammar School Year seven Girton Grammar School students will again be taking part in a technology-based initiative that will help them to learn about energy poverty, renewable energy and global citizenship.

The SolarBuddy School Program entails assembling portable solar lights from a kit and donating the lights to children living in energy poverty throughout the South Pacific, South East Asia and Africa.

Rod Smith, head of academic services, said the initiative combined learning with practical application and intercultural understanding.

“This program, run by a registered Australian charity, fits within our technology curriculum and simultaneously supports the community service ethos of the school," Mr Smith said.

“The students will assemble solar lights under the guidance of facilitators from SolarBuddy and in doing so will be helping disadvantaged communities reduce reliance on dangerous and unhealthy energy sources such as kerosene, diesel, wood and candles.

“The goal of the SolarBuddy School Program is to allow children living in poverty to study long after the sun goes down, improving their education outcomes and overall health and wellbeing.

“Our students relate well to supporting a program that is targeted at helping other school students.

They learn something about electronics and something about those less fortunate than themselves, so this is a fantastic initiative on different levels,” Mr Smith said.

Studies from SolarBuddy (solarbuddy.org) show that children who receive the gift of a solar light spend less time collecting firewood for cooking

and heating and instead spend more time attending class, preparing for exams and completing homework assignments.

An Impact Assessment commissioned by SolarBuddy and KTF found that when children received a SolarBuddy light, there was a 78 per cent increase in time spent on homework and an 80 per cent reduction in average weekly expenditure on kerosene.

“Science and technology hold so many of the solutions to environmental, educational and social issues around the world and we are pleased to immerse our students in this one small solution," Mr Smith said.

“It is important for young people to understand that they have the power to make a difference and to think about science and technology as solutions-based disciplines."

Langley Primary School At Langley Primary school they believe in giving every child the chance to learn unhindered by large class sizes, distractions, bullying or strict procedures. Students and their families are welcomed to the Sacred Heart College community at the year seven mass.

Sacred Heart College Kyneton Staff at Sacred Heart College Kyneton understand that starting at a new school, whether it be commencing the secondary years or making a change at any year level, is a time where students and parents need care and support. This transition time is carefully managed, with a focus on communication between home and school to assist parents in understanding the school routine and best ways to support their child during this time of change.

When asked about how they were enjoying their time at Sacred Heart College, current year seven students Rose and Sarah

said they both were travelling from Gisborne by bus and, apart from the earlier start than when in primary school, they really enjoyed the trip to school.

Rose said she had most enjoyed making new friends, and Sarah said she loved how supportive the teachers were. Both girls said the one of the best things they enjoyed about college life was the Peer Support Program provided by year 10 students.

"Five year 10 students meet with our class for a period every fortnight. We do lots of fun activities - last week we broke into groups and talked about what confidence is," Sarah said.

Tylden Primary School There is always something terrific happening at Tylden Primary School.

The school is gearing up for special activities that are planned for Education Week (May 20-25) and Reconciliation Week (May 27- June 3). There are open days planned for Education Week, so why not pay Tylden PS a visit and have a look?

Tylden's senior students are training for tee ball and netball competitions this term, and every student is keen to contribute their best efforts to the team. At the same time, the school has engaged a local performing artist, Emilie Bloom, to work alongside the teachers and provide extra expertise and excitement in the new performing arts program. In fact, the celebration of the arts is in full swing with individuals and small groups rehearsing for the annual Tylden’s Got Talent. This amazing concert involves all sorts of acts encompassing the full range of the performing arts. All acts are entirely planned by the students themselves.

At Tylden PS, literacy and numeracy are a priority and the school places the highest priority on developing children’s skills in these two key areas. The school is focused on developing strong readers with excellent writing skills. Literacy instruction is based on the Science of Reading including phonemic awareness, synthetic phonics and the use of decodable readers. There are strong connections between the reading, writing and spelling programs. Teachers establish strong number sense from prep through hands-on learning activities, problem solving and a focus on developing fluency in number facts.

So many things contribute to the high-quality learning program at Tylden PS. The school will hold open days in Education Week on Thursday May 27 (10am-2.30pm) and Saturday May 29 (10am-12.30pm). MIDLAND PROPERTY & LIVING Australian dream is alive and well Gil King, CEO, Real Estate Institute of Victoria The real estate sector is abuzz with talk about REIV’s March quarter median price data, which show historic increases for a number of areas in Melbourne and regional Victoria.

For the first time, houses in metro Melbourne surpassed a median value of $1m jumping by 8.8 per cent from the previous quarter to land at $1,004,500.

We need to look beyond the hype to see the full picture.

In regional Victoria, houses surpassed $500,000 for the first time with a 4.1 per cent increase from the December quarter, and 12.3 per cent annual growth. While regional unit prices recorded a 5.9 per cent quarterly increase, they are now 19.1 per cent more valuable than they were 12 months ago.

Many city-dwellers are taking up residence in regional Victoria, as flexible working conditions are being embraced and encouraged by more and more organisations.

Gains in regional Victoria show that the benefits of the strong market have been spread around the state, not just in the traditional inner suburbs. Victorians are looking beyond the inner suburbs to find the lifestyle they want. These intra-state migrants will help to create jobs, boost local businesses, and revitalise regional communities.

Across the country, the number of firsthome buyers increased to 45,759 in December quarter, up 24.7 per cent, with Victoria experiencing a similarly positive trend.

Loans to first-home buyers now make up 42 per cent of the owner-occupier market, and credit growth in Australia from invest-

ment housing and owner-occupier housing has also been showing a positive trajectory throughout 2020 and into early 2021.

These numbers demonstrate that new entrants to the property sector are taking advantage of beneficial market conditions and incentives, such as low interest rates, first-home buyer grants and mortgage repayment holidays.

With Victoria’s property sector reaching an estimated 35,000 transactions in the March quarter – the highest prior-correspondingperiod result since 2015 – it’s important to consider if this performance is indeed sustainable. To answer this, we need to look at a few important external influences for the sector over the six to 12 months: How significant an impact will the new Residential Tenancies Act have on property owners – will investors consider other investment options as they realise how onerous the new rules are for landlords?

How will the continued closure of international borders impact overseas investors?

How might credit levels change if interest rates rise?

Will fewer international students and less migration contribute to downward pressure on rent levels?

How long will government play a role in providing incentives for first-home buyers?

They’re all critical factors people in the sector should be attuned to.

But, in the meantime, we can take a moment to reflect on the fact that the property sector in Victoria is a significant economic contributor that’s enabling opportunity for more and more Victorians every day.

Connecting Country’s dedicated team of volunteers is out in the field this month checking nest boxes across the Mount Alexander region.

For 2021, the nest boxes will be checked by trained and insured volunteers rather than staff. The volunteers are farmers, students and local community leaders, and bring a range of experience to the project.

Connecting Country recently joined forces with Castlemaine Field Naturalists Club to inspect some local nest boxes and were delighted to find both brush-tailed phascogales (also known as the tuan) and sugar gliders. This shows the importance of the nest boxes in our landscape, where old trees with hollows are far and few between.

Connecting Country began their nest box program in 2010 and have installed over 450 nest boxes on private and public land across the region. The nest boxes have been designed specifically for use by the brush-tailed phascogale, a nocturnal hollow-dependent marsupial that lives in the local area. This adorable little animal has experienced a serious range contraction and decline in numbers and is listed as threatened under Victorian legislation.

The nest boxes provide supplementary habitat for phascogales and other native animals such as the sugar glider, particularly in areas where natural tree hollows are lacking. It is anticipated that providing additional nesting sites, albeit artificial, will contribute to an increase in local phascogale populations and distribution. Nest boxes are located across the landscape systematically, so data can used to analyse some of the factors that might influ-

ence nest box use.

Connecting Country’s monitoring coordinator Jess Lawton said it was exciting to finally be able to check in on our threatened phascogales, which were last monitored in 2018.

"We’ve invested heavily in training and safety procedures, but seeing people’s faces light up the first time they see an animal in a nest box is so special," said Ms Lawton, who has also studied phascogales as part of her PhD project.

"Our nest box project is an invaluable way to engage the community in nature conservation, to provide homes for a threatened species, and to learn more about habitat requirements for phascogales."

To bolster the safety of this year’s program, volunteer team leaders attended training in early April 2021, covering the topics of nest box inspections, how to climb a ladder safely, and how to identify species such as phascogales and sugar gliders. Safety Systems from Bendigo provided the ladder safety training, and helped improve systems to keep volunteers safe.

Volunteer team leaders are supported

by Connecting Country's monitoring coordinator and a network of volunteer nest box helpers. Without these volunteers, the program would be unable to continue, so Connecting Country would like to thank them for their dedication and commitment to this project, and the broader aims of landscape restoration.

GOLF results Champions at Romsey Played over 54 holes, the third and final round of the championships took place in very cold, windy conditions that tested all players on Saturday.

Lowmarker Mick Squire held a sevenstroke lead, Scott Williams was ahead by three, and John Freestone by 15 as the field hit off.

No one was able to play to their handicap such were the conditions.

Andrew Clement 83-8-75 won the day’s stroke event on a countback from Pat Chisholm 87-12-75, with Williams 90-1476 next best.

Mitch Atlas, Chris vanDerVliet and Simon Donovan were NTPs. Championship wrap-up follows: Champion – Mick Squire 76,78, 83 – 237.

Senior Cup (70+ years) – John Freestone 236 Women's titles Good autumn conditions prevailed for the second round of Romsey women’s championship last Wednesday.

Jenny Hartley 98-23-75, Chris Manktelow 110-33-77 and Darlene Baker 97-1780 had the best nett scores.

Championship (after two rounds) Baker 92, 97 – 189 leads Hartley 104, 98 – 202.

Hartley and Wendy Gosden represented RGC at the Euroa tournament which attracted 63 players on Thursday.

Melissa Eddy (Euroa) was the tournament winner, with Jenni Vennel (Gisborne) taking out the B-grade scratch award.

In division two pennant played at Broadford last week, Romsey tied with Euroa 2.5/2.5 and Lancefield finished square with Trentham.

Kyneton Mark Sciberas and Glenn Cook scored easy wins in Kyneton Golf Club’s RSL singles knockout semi-finals, and will play off in the final on Saturday.

Sciberas defeated Barry Keane 4/3 and Cook downed David Ryan 5/3.

In Saturday’s stableford Namik Akkurt (12 handicap) had 32 points to edge out Jason McClure (8) on a countback.

Robyn MacRae (25) was the women’s winner.

Nick Williamson was nearest the pin (2) and also super pin winner with Tracey Branich. Tien Ho, Ross Foreman and Pat

Clohesy were also NTPs. Last Tuesday Lois Scott was the Agrade winner with 93-24-69, from Rosemary Dowling (Royal Melbourne) 96-23-73 and Scott also took out the 36-holes Dr Groves Trophy with 69 and 73 – 142, from Marg Scoble 71, 74 – 145, with Lorraine Ryan in third place.

Joan Gibbs 98-36-72 topped B-grade from Beth Murray 96-23-73.

Scoble (2), Michelle Werner and Julie Harris were NTPs. The Les Glanfield Memorial 4BBB stableford on Wednesday went to Ric O’Donnell and Peter Walsh with 42 points, one clear of Peter Cameron and Tony DiBella.

Kyneton’s number two team beat Belvoir Park 3/1 last week to reach the final of the Bendigo District ladies pennant against Axedale. Good luck to the team members.

Lancefield Barry and Graeme Brennan took out the multiple stableford at Lancefield on Saturday with 57 points.

Individual grades: A – Barry Brennan (11 handicap) 31; B – Graham Mau (18) 33; C – Kevin McBride (23) 37.

Mark Cruise, Barry Flentjar, Dale Schmitt and Melvyn Hall were NTPs. Wednesday women’s stableford: Anne Robinson (37) 41 points, from Wendy Nicholls (29) 38.

Woodend Woodend ladies are off to Lancefield tomorrow for the annual challenge event, and would like to find a change of luck from previous years.

Last week’s women’s stableford at Woodend went to Cheryl Garner with 37 points, from Val Chard 34 (also NTP).

Ambrose winners the previous weekend were Toby Barker and Scott Barker with a 56.25 tally.

Trentham The annual challenge match between Trentham and Gisborne golf ladies originated in the 1990s, and last Wednesday was played at Gisborne, with the home side victorious in a tight finish.

Trentham’s A and B-grade winners were Jenny Clarke and Trudy Ferry.

Cold and blustery conditions on Saturday confronted the 19 pairs in the American foursomes, and 34 in the men’s par event at Trentham. Sue Byrne and John Hudson shot 82 off the stick for a 70.375 first place in the foursomes, with Rhonda Holcombe and Jim Coglan runners-up.

The respective A and B-grade par winners Keith Webster and Scott Batty both shot minus 1.

A memorable occasion Soccer was played under lights at Barkly Square in Kyneton for the first time on Saturday evening.

A series of under age matches between Kyneton District Soccer Club and Castlemaine Goldfields Soccer Club culminated in the senior division five (north-west zone) match between the neighbouring clubs.

The clubs competed for the inaugural Challenge Cup, which will become an annual fixture.

Kyneton’s long-serving president Ron Cole welcomed district MP Mary-Anne Thomas and Macedon Ranges Mayor Jennifer Anderson, deputy mayor Mark Ridgeway, and Crs Janet Pearce and Bill West, and Football Federation Victoria and Bendigo Soccer League representatives, pointing out the great step forward in safety and the ability to stage night matches offered by the modern lighting system at Barkly Square He also thanked Castlemaine Goldfields for co-operating in staging the matches during the day.

Spectators were spread around the perimeter, some watching the matches from their vehicles.

The Challenge Cup had been decided in Kyneton’s favour on a points tally before the main match.

In obvious pain, he was made comfortable but could not be moved until an ambulance arrived to take him to hospital.

For a time there was some uncertainty about whether the match would resume or be abandoned; eventually the match continued with Kyneton securing a 4-1 victory.

Goldfields club president Aaron Shooter acknowledged the two clubs shared a unique heritage, with a certain amount of healthy rivalry.

“However, we are also clear that we have many things in common and hope the day becomes a chance to celebrate both these elements, and add to our combined histories.”

Kyneton’s Ava Coleman was thrilled to hold the Challenge Cup after Saturday’s cavalcade of soccer at Barkly Square on Saturday.

Ava scored her first career goal from her new position as a central defensive midfielder as the KUSC under 15 girls had an exciting 1-0 over Castlemaine Goldfields.

The day began with the visitors winning the U13 girls’ match on pitch 2.

At the same time, on pitch 1, the U14 mixed team had a 3-3 draw, and the same score followed for the U12B mixed side.

Kyneton’s U12A mixed side had a convincing 6-4 victory, and the U16 mixed team followed with a 2-0 win over Goldfields.

The day concluded with the senior men’s match, won 4-1 by Kyneton.

Photo: Andrew Wiseman Macedon Rangers Soccer Club's Under 10 girls and Under 9 and 10 boys were invited by Melbourne City Football Club to attend the Melbourne City v Wellington Phoenix A League game at AAMI Park in Melbourne on Sunday.

Some of the kids were the mascots for the player walk on and others had the opportunity to play on AAMI Stadium at half time. The smiles could be seen from the moon, for both the kids and the parents.

Lauren from Melbourne City went out of her way to ensure the kids would never forget this afternoon.

Lions demolish Rovers

Harcourt has retained top spot on the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League ladder with a blistering 302-point victory over Maryborough Rovers.

The Lions out-gunned the valiant Rovers from the first bounce opening with a 12-goal haul in the first term and going on with the demolition to post 47 goals for the match while keeping Borough scoreless.

Harcourt sits ahead of Lexton and Trentham with a massive 1098.63 percentage after round four.

Goal kickers for Harcourt were Zachary Denahy 13, Benjamin Leech 10, Sean Moss, Kristian Bruce, Thomas Walters, Jack Douglass 3, Darby Semmens, Paul Chaplin, Lachlan Mitchell 2, Christopher Smart, Tomas Stefaniw, Brayden Frost, Joshua Hogg, Alex Code and Nicholas Matricardi.

A dominant first half at Newstead on Saturday ensured Trentham senior footballers extended their unbeaten winning streak to five from five in the MCDFNL. Luke Whitehouse starred up forward with seven goals, and Joel Cowan continued his good form. B. Cass, J. Steen and Z. Gervasoni were also named in the best, as the Saints had plenty of contributors.

The home side improved in the second half, offering some tough opposition.

Whitehouse led the way with seven goals, J. Keogh 3, A. Ferrier and J. Cowan 2, and D. Holden, J. Mighell, S. Evans and A. Rintala all got on the scoreboard.

In a scrappy reserves contest, scores were close for three quarters before the Saints took control to win 10.8 (68) 6.5 (41).

NETBALL THRILLER The A-grade netball match was an absolute thriller, with the two sides going goal for goal throughout.

The Saints’ B-graders celebrated their first win for the season 35-30, with Elle Torney and Kelley MeadeSweet named in the best.

The C-graders won 30-15 in

a convincing display, with Maddy Matheson, Jamieson Purcell and Kasey Evans all playing well.

Trentham’s junior netballers failed to win in any grade, but positive results are sure to come.

This Saturday the Saints head to Talbot to take on the Hawks, and look forward to a successful day of football and netball.

Hawks revive seas son Bill West

In a pulsating contest at Gilbert Gordon Reserve, a new-look Woodend-Hesket overhauled a gallant Macedon to win by five points on Saturday.

The hard-fought match of the round victory effectively revives the Hawks’ season, with the win being their first against Macedon in 12 years.

Such was the elation when the siren sounded, and in the changerooms afterwards, one could be excused for thinking it was an elimination final victory for the home side.

The 12.6 (78) to 11.7 (73) victory was hard earned, and both sides squandered chances, often under pressure.

Injuries took their toll on both sides.

Some players carrying injuries stayed on the field in the heat of battle when the match was in the balance in the last quarter.

Macedon’s big ruckman Rowan Andrews (suspected broken cheekbone from ‘friendly fire’) and fearless Mitch Blake (concussion in a head clash) were hurt in the first half and conveyed to hospital in the first half.

Hawks’ speedster Liam Bianco took no further part in the game after being stunned in the collision with Blake.

Hawk utility Josh Pound kicked two goals but carried a hip flexor injury for most of the match, and ruckman Marcus Stapleton appreciated the loss of Andrews to influence the game.

In perspective, Woodend-Hesket threw off the memory of the thrashing inflicted by an on-fire Romsey on April 24, and can confidently look forward to easier matches against Western Rams and Lancefield in the next two rounds.

Two 50m penalties that led to goals for the home side came at crucial times when Macedon threatened to establish a winning lead.

Ace forward Jason Cooke, often a match winner, always looked dangerous.

Hawks’ coach Ben Tankard did not underestimate the quality the unbeaten club he formerly coached would bring to the field, and when the Cats led by 20 points in the third term it was crunch time.

A loss would leave the Hawks distanced from the top five.

James Vistini was the proven quality recruit who really stood up when it mattered in the second half. Some of his play was breathtaking, and he earned the best afield medal.

New netball experience

Woodend-Hesket’s A-grade netballers had a new experience on Saturday – beating Macedon!

The home side won by 16 goals and even rested a couple of players late in the match at Gilbert Gordon Reserve.

The Cats, one of the powerhouse sides in the RDFNL, were decimated through most of their top players attending a very important wedding.

Some of the Macedon players who stepped up into A-grade had already played in B-grade.

The Woodend-Hesket 19&Us also had a big win, and the club’s netball co-ordinator and U19s coach Kellie Duff is very pleased with the way things are heading for the Hawks.

Riddell scored a big win in Agrade over the Western Rams, with shooter Tara O’Grady

continuing her good form.

Epic comeback by Bulldogs A remarkable turnaround by Gisborne senior footballers produced five crucial last quarter goals and a four-point victory over Eaglehawk on Saturday.

It may well be a season defining victory for the Bulldogs, who find themselves in third position on the ladder, with a home and away games round break this Saturday, then very winnable matches at Gardiner Reserve against Kyneton and Maryborough to follow.

To win at Eaglehawk is a tough ask at any time, and Bulldogs’ senior coach Rob Waters and his assistants were elated with the fighting spirit that emerged in the last quarter after the home side had looked to have the match under control In a low-scoring affair, Gisborne had found goals hard to conjure, and trailed by 27 points --- 4.8 to 8.11 – at the last change.

To restrict Eaglehawk to just four points when the chips were down was a huge performance, while some risk taking produced a match-winning 5.4 at the other end of the ground.

In the first term Gisborne failed to capitalise on a wind advantage, and was facing an uphill task at half time.

Canterbury Park has proved a graveyard for visiting teams over the years, and the Bulldogs must gain huge confidence from this performance.

Key defenders Jack Reaper and Jarrad Lynch played key roles, and other players lifted under pressure as the Hawks’ lead was whittled away as the clock ticked down.

Paddy McKenna finished with three goals and posed a constant threat to the opposition, while ex-Castlemaine player Jake O’Brien showed his class with Doolan and Crosbie also included in the 'best' list.

Gisborne won 9.13 (67) to 8.15 (63), and this win, plus the onepoint opening round margin over Strathfieldsaye, are making other finals aspirants sit up and take notice.

Gisborne Reserves found the tough Hawks too experienced, and went down by 25 points in another low-scoring affair.

S. McCaskill 2, L. Doherty and L. Weber were the goalkickers, with S. Merrett, B. Nalder, M. McDonald, B. Spear, E. Bretherton and R. Nicol the best players.

The Bulldogs’ in-form Under 18s did not have things all their own way, but they settled into a 10-goal second-term scoring spree with the wind.

The young ‘Dogs ball movement proved too much for their opponents, with a 20.12 to 3.5 final score.

James Fox 5, and Harry Thomas and Matt. Merrett both 4 were the major goalkickers, with Rye Penny, Connor Bills, Fox, Luke Ellings, N. Ozanne and M. Weber listed as best.

Gisborne’s Under 17s and B-grade teams remain undefeated and on top of their respective ladders.

U17s coach Rylee O’Connell said the side can develop and improve further, listing “complacency as our number one enemy” at this stage.

The B Reserve contest as close throughout, before the Hawks produce some accurate shooting late in the game to prevail 40-37.

Some key ‘outs’ and injuries saw a different look A Reserve side, with Eloise Rodda and Georgia Murray applying defensive pressure and veteran Shelley Farrugia showing composure and strength in the attacking circle.

Despite this, a well-drilled Hawks’ team ran away with a 50-29 victory.

Tigers make im impression mpression Tiger Talk Kyneton and Maryborough have young, energetic senior football sides in the Bendigo League this season, and for three quarters on Saturday they were closely matched.

In a seesawing affair the Tigers led by four points at half time, and finished the match off with a seven-goals-to-three last term to win by 31 points -- 17.13 to 12.12.

Talented youngsters Ben Cameron (five goals) Bailey McGee, Louis Thompson and Angus Nolte have been a revelation this season and were prominent once again.

With no U18s match, a large and parochial home crowd turned up at the Showgrounds to cheer on the Tigers in footy and netball.

Jordan Mangan again rucked strongly in the main match, and James Gaff, Guy Dickson and Sam Foreman turned in strong contributions.

The Tigers lifted all over the ground to dominate the last term, and look forward to the next match at Gisborne on May 29, after this weekend’s break.

Maryborough reserves are having a tough time fielding enough players, and it showed as Kyneton raced to a 18.18 to 0.3 victory in the opening match.

The Kyneton side fielded a good mix of mature-age play-

ers and local youth; many U19s making their presence felt.

SENIOR WOMEN With a weakened defence and several key players out, Kyneton’s senior women’s team faced a difficult task against second on the ladder Bendigo Thunder.

The girls held on in the first half, and two goals from Heidi Erasmus lifted their prospects.

With no bench players, the Tigers understandably faded and the Thunder took full control to win well.

A special mention for Natalie Korinfsky, who played her 50th game for the Tigers.

NETBALL ROUND-UP There was one close netball match, with Kyneton A-graders having to withstand a late surge

by Maryborough.

The Tigers were keen to play, opening up a 10-goal break at the last change.

Maryborough rallied, and unforced errors left Kyneton hanging on grimly for a 44-42 victory.

Tegan Beckerley was best on court, with attacking drives to the goal circle.

A spate of injuries have impacted on the Tigers’ depth across the grades.

Baylee Eve looks to be sidelined for the rest of the season, and the U17s goal circle had a welcome inclusion in captain Jazzy Chambers.

Despite their two captains out injured, the B Reserve girls battled hard with Meg Norman and Alayne Burns under pressure in defence. Darby Kelly, best o court, Saffron Moody and Juliette

moved well through mid-court and Ester McIntyre was welcomed back.

Kirsty Draper and Tahlia Levitzke showed promise from limited chances in the goal ring, with the visitors winning 43-20.

The B-grade defenders kept Maryborough honest, and the

team welcomed back Dani Bourke (50th game) as a reliable goal shooter.

April Sims was best on court, and the B graders are showing continuous improvement, despite a 56-26 scoreline. There are promising signs for later in the season.

Dragons dominate on field and court

Castlemaine played host to top-of-the-table Sandhurst at the Camp Reserve in Bendigo Football Netball League round six action last Saturday.

The Dragons wasted no time posting four majors to open their account, leaving the Magpies on the back foot.

To their credit, the home side rallied and pegged a couple back through Klai Jermyn and Callum Mcconachy. However, Sandhurst managed one more before the siren to lead by 24 points at quarter time.

Despite some good passages of play from the young Magpies, the Dragons held sway in the second term adding another five majors and extending their lead out to 59 points at half time.

Unfortunately, it was all one-way traffic after half time with Sandhurst adding a further 21 goals to win by 188 points.

Best for the Magpies were Dakota Slingo, Dave Stephens, John Watson, Callum Mcconachy, Liam Wilkinson and Will Moran.

In the Reserves, Castlemaine also went down to strong opposition by 147 points despite a determined effort. Best on ground for the Pies were Brayden Wright, Jacob Tierney, Trevor Butcher, Brodie Hogan, Luke Pritchard and Nicholas O'Brien.

The Under 18s also found the going tough against a polished Sandhurst outfit and lost by 123 points despite their best efforts. The Magpies' only goal kicker was Camblar Kays. Best were Kays, Jed Denahy, Angus Waller, Ben Moran, Campbell Mclennan and Annan Foley.

NETBALL On the netball court, Castlemaine's A Reserve, B Grade, B Reserve and 17 and Under sides lost to Sandhurst by convincing margins despite giving their all from start to finish. The young Magpie netball sides are gaining valuable experience with every passing week and hopefully they will see their hard work rewarded with a win in the coming weeks.

This weekend the Magpies travel to Strathfieldsaye to tackle the fourth-placed Storm in round seven.
