Storm ravages region

Treacherous for traffic: fallen trees in last week’s chaotic storms became a problem for all across the region. Three Chain Road was among the treacherous routes for traffic Thursday morning. Local residents and tradies tackled several large trees down with chainsaws to help clear the road between Lancefield and Kyneton.

Power and communications cut for days, damaged property, fallen trees blocking roads, entire towns isolated and undrinkable mains water.

This is the destruction from one of the worst storms to lash the Macedon Ranges region in years.

Wind gusts in excess of 100km/h wreaked havoc across central Victoria last Wednesday and Thursday.

Powercor crews worked to restore power to more than 100,000 homes and businesses across northern and west-

ern Victoria. Woodend, Gisborne, Kyneton and Trentham were among the hardest hit.

TRENTHAM CUT OFF Fallen trees cut access to Trentham where trapped residents faced days without power, telecommunications and drinkable tap water.

Coliban Water and the Health Department issued an urgent “do not drink tap water” to Trentham residents on Thursday evening.

On Friday morning water the authority advised there was potentially only two to three hours of water supply remaining for the town as the Water Treatment Plant had lost power.

Hepburn Shire Council opened a relief centre at Trentham’s Mechanics Institute where people could access information, food, power and bottled water.

Coliban Water’s tap water advisory notice lifted on Saturday at 6pm.

A Campbells Creek woman was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital after she was struck by a car in Campbells Creek while cycling on Friday.

Police at Castlemaine said the 71-year-old woman had been cycling along Main Road when she was struck by a sedan that was being driven by an 83-year-old man.

"She has received significant injuries and she's been airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital," Acting Sergeant Robert Binks said.

Passersby had stopped to assist the woman following the collision, which happened near the intersection of Moscript Street at about 12.15pm on Friday afternoon, police said.

Abuse to Powercor crews has prompted calls for respect as they continue to rebuild parts of the electricity network following last week's severe windstorms.

Crews were mobilised from other regions to support the major restoration efforts, which included reconstructing power poles, wires and other infrastructure that was demolished by large trees and branches.

Much of the major repair work was being conducted in areas that were inaccessible due to dangerous conditions, large fallen trees and other debris.

A Powercor spokesperson said dedicated vegetation teams were needed to cut and remove trees to allow access.

"We know our customers are doing it tough in these conditions without power and we want to assure customers that we are doing everything to get power back on as safely and as quickly as possible," they said.

While many were grateful for the assistance, some Powercor crews reported abuse from a small number of customers.

"Our lineys are people with families and loved ones who live in the communities they service," a spokesperson said.

"We ask people to please respect them as they work to restore power."

the scene and she was airlifted from the Castlemaine Camp Reserve oval shortly after the incident.

Police investigating said they were yet to determine the factors that caused the collision but had not yet ruled out the possibility that the driver of the vehicle may face charges.

"The 83-year-old male driver is from Hepburn Springs," Sgt Binks said.

"He has not been charged at this stage."

A spokesperson with Ambulance Victoria told the Express the woman was in a critical condition with upper and lower body injuries when she was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Friday afternoon.

Forest Fire Management Victoria crews worked hard to clear roads on Mount Macedon throughout the storm damage.

FIRST RESPONDERS AT WORK Local SES units responded to hundreds of requests for help with flooding, trees down, building damage and rescues.

A Storm Task Force was activated made up by vehicles and crew from fire brigades within the Macedon Ranges to assist with their operations.

Gisborne firefighter Bevan Moody said crews from Gisborne, Bullengarook, Macedon, Mount Macedon, Hesket, Riddells Creek and Woodend where tasked to storm damage calls on the south side of Mt Macedon over the past two days.

“Priority was to gain access to stranded residents who had been without power for 48 hours and no vehicular access,” Mr Moody said.

“Crews also assisted power utility crews gain access to certain areas for power restoration works.

“A tremendous amount of work was done throughout Mount Macedon the last couple

of days, well done to all crews who worked tirelessly for lengthy periods of time.”

LUCKY ESCAPE FOR FIRIE Kyneton firefighter Simon Hinneberg made a narrow escape from a huge fallen tree.

He was responding to a storm damage callout at 2am on Thursday morning when his own property came under threat.

"We got a callout for a gas leak where a tree had broken a main but I didn't make the truck,” he said.

"I'd just parked the ute in our driveway and was walking to the front door and as I got to the alcove I heard the crack and I just got to the front door and then the tiles were falling down on me.

"The scarier thing was sitting inside the house waiting for another tree to come down on our house. It was that bad - I really thought another tree would come down."

Joe Farrugia is a self-confessed advocate for industry superannuation funds and would recommend anyone thinking of joining one to do so.

It's sound advice too, coming from a man whose 49-year contribution to the superannuation sector has just been recognised with a Medal of the Order of Australia in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours.

"All the major industry funds, though they can get some bad press sometimes, are all run really well and in the best interest of their members," Joe says.

The South Gisborne local began his career in 1971 working at AMP, one of the top two superannuation providers in the country at the time, and worked for the company in the corporate super arena for 30 years.

In that time he was seconded to the Catholic Superannuation Fund for 11 years and served as fund and company secretary for the fund for a further 18 years.

"During that time the fund grew enormously," he says.

A new association was set up for fund executives in 1999 (Fund Executives Association Ltd) and Joe joined as a found-

ing director and remained on the board until he retired in 2019.

"I was also on the Victorian executive committee for the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia for about 18 years and it was in those two areas that I gave back to the industry," he says.

Joe loved working with both of his employers and over the years had the opportunity to meet and work with some very important and brilliant people.

"The people I've had the honour to work with made my job so much more enjoyable," he says.

"I was blessed with having great people to work with."

At the 2019 Conference of Major Superannuation Funds, the Australian Institute of Superannuation Trustees acknowledged Joe's contribution by declaring him an ambassador of CMSF, and later that year, just before he retired, he was made a Life Member of the Fund Executives Association.

Joe says he was thrilled to receive those two honours, and also now an OAM. "There are so many deserving people in the superannuation industry. I have had the privilege of working with many great people; you just feel humbled to be considered worthy," he says.

Under Section 74(4) in respect of a review of allowances, any person may make a written submission to Council under Section 223 of the Act.

Declaring to all and sundry that you're going to plant a million trees is a fairly big boast.

But Chewton's Dr Maggie McLeod did just that.

"It was back in the '80s at an Werner Erhard seminar that I got up and opened my mouth and said 'I'm going to plant a million trees," she recalls.

"I had absolutely no idea how I was going to do it. But that was the beginning."

It was a 'beginning' that has now seen Dr McLeod receive an OAM (Order of Australia Medal).

The newly announced Queen's Birthday accolade is for her service to conservation and the environment.

Because, after making her heady commitment back in the '80s, Dr McLeod - best known as Maggie to her friends - went on to become co-founder and president of TreeProject, an organisation that has gone on to plant more than two million trees.

"It clearly resonated with other people because suddenly there was a group," she told the Express on learning of her Queen's Birthday honour.

In 1990 Dr McLeod played a lead role in establishing the free tree scheme that's since become known as the Re-tree Scheme.

Her quest to create a healthier, leafier planet saw her extensive personal participation in Parks Victoria's urban plantings along Melbourne's Yarra River.

"We did an initial mass planting along the Yarra and hundreds of people turned up," she recounts.

A biochemist by profession, Dr McLeod has since become an active member of the Chewton Landcare Group, which she joined back in 2015, serving as its secre-

Former Victoria Police Commissioner and Castlemaine resident Christine Nixon has been made an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

The latest award for distinguished service to law enforcement, to women in policing and to tertiary education, adds to many awards Ms Nixon has received including the Australian Police Medal awarded in the Australia Day Honours in 1997; the Centenary Medal for outstanding service to policing; and recognition as an inductee to the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2001.

Ms Nixon enjoyed a long and successful policing career including appointments as the first female Assistant Commissioner of New South Wales Police (1994-2001) and Australia's first female Chief Commissioner with Victoria Police (2001-2009).

Ms Nixon said she was particularly proud to be recognised for her work to further women in policing.

"When I joined the New South Wales police force back in 1972, I was one of only 130 women. Today it's wonderful to see so many more women taking on a career in the police force, but also to see more stepping up to take on leadership roles," she said.

She said violence against women remained a major issue today but there was far more awareness and support available to victims, and here in Victoria she was pleased to see the state government putting significant funding towards tackling the issue.

"I believe they have invested more than all the other states combined," she said.

Ms Nixon was also pleased by the acknowledgment of her work in tertiary education.

She was proud to help Monash University with the development of its police studies course and also held the role of deputy chancellor for 11 years. She has also worked and consulted at various other universities - most recently Ballarat's Federation University.

"I think education is so important," she said.

These and the CCTV footage then enabled police to contact and interview the driver who is now facing a $413 fine and three demerit points.

"She's been issued with an infringement notice and may also be facing a review of her licence."

Sen Const Lewis said police will now step up their patrols of all school crossings throughout the Castlemaine

area including Campbells Creek as well as those on Ray, Duke and Barker Streets.

"We'll be stepping up patrols at all of the school crossings after this incident to make sure drivers are doing the right thing," he said.

"It's not about issuing fines.

It's about the safety of children and also our crossing supervisors like Craig."

Police are ramping up their focus on Castlemaine's school crossings following a concerning near-miss last week.

The increased policing focus follows last Wednesday's incident in which a motorist drove a car through the Hargraves Street school crossing as an on-duty supervisor stood in the middle to assist school children who were preparing to cross the road at 8.45am, police said.

"The sedan just went straight through the crossing, in the 40km zone, just missing the crossing supervisor," Senior Constable Lewis said.

"He was in a bit of shock and reported the incident."

Crossing supervisor Craig said the incident caught him unaware and could have resulted in a worse outcome had he not just advised children who were preparing to cross to slow down.

"I'd opened the crossing to pedestrians and was standing in the middle with my sign and should have been visible to anyone," Craig said.

"The car went straight through probably about one metre away from me. Thankfully this crossing is right outside the police station."

The incident was captured by multiple CCTV cameras stationed at the adjacent Hargraves Street police station.

A contested double-storey medical facility and 104-place childcare centre has been approved for Romsey’s Autumn Views estate.

The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal has overturned Macedon Ranges Shire Council’s refusal for the development south of the township.

The controversial application aimed to meet service demand but attracted 19 objections and a 100-signature strong petition against the size, character and amenity impact.

Plans for 2-8 Poplar Drive include eight consulting rooms, two dental rooms, two pathology rooms, two wellbeing rooms and 51 car parking spaces.

Against planning officer advice, councillors rejected the development stating the location was inappropriate due to design, intensity, appearance, bulk and scale.

Councillors felt the proposal was not sympathetic to the character of the area.

But VCAT ruled “net community benefit lies in granting conditional approval”.

The tribunal said MRSC “erroneously advertised” the proposal despite it being affected by a DPO9 which excludes third party involvement in the application process.

It found the proposal would service demand for medical and childcare facilities, and that it mostly met DDO18 planning requirements.

A similar bid for a 100-place childcare centre in Reynolds Grove at Romsey was rejected at VCAT based on location, scale and design.

But the VCAT member did not agree this proposal would be “unduly prominent, highly visible or visually discordant to the point of unacceptability”. They highlighted vegetation along the road reserve.

“I also expect that in the longer term, the childcare centre and medical centre will not be on the edge of town but instead will be part of an expanded township as land to the south is developed,” the member said.

“Although somewhat speculative, I agree that the farming land adjoining to the south is likely to be developed for some type of urban development given the way in which Maple Drive terminates abruptly at the zone boundary.

“Infilling urban/semi urban development between the GRZ1 and the existing commercial/industrial zoned areas near Knox Road is a not unreasonable proposition.”

Objectors to a proposed 87-lot subdivision at Kyneton South have been fundraising to pay for legal representation at a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal hearing to decide on the application.

The proposal for 85 Harpers Lane goes before VCAT on June 15 after the developer brought council to the tribunal when a council decision was not taken within the prescribed time.

The objectors, 'Friends of Kyneton South', have raised $24,000 and now have only a modest shortfall in the funding to meet their legal expenses.

They need $8647 more towards the hire of their barrister to challenge the developer’s application at the VCAT hearing.

"Helping to ensure that this development does not go ahead as currently proposed is timely for all residents, not just Kyneton South people," spokesperson Ruth Williams said.

"Friends of Kyneton South are not saying no to development, but want a development in keeping with the neighbouring area, Harpers Lane to keep its rural charm and suitable solutions to

Digital health leader honoured Lisa Dennis

Harcourt North resident Professor Kathleen Gray has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to medicine through digital health education.

Ms Gray has worked in the ever-evolving sector for more than 20 years and said she was delighted to be acknowledged for her contribution.

Digital health is the use of internet-connected information and communication technologies in the health sector.

"Many kinds of information have to be produced, stored, shared and interpreted so that people can care for their own health wisely, professionals can provide the best possible care, and health authorities can run our health systems more efficiently," she said.

"High-speed computing, mobile devices and social media have brought many changes to how we all work with health information in the 21st century, with much more change to come."

Ms Gray promotes education and training so everyone can work responsibly with digital health information.

She is currently an executive committee member and director of education and workforce development at the Centre for Digital Transformation of Health at The University of Melbourne.

Previously she was acting director at the Health

and Biomedical Informatics Centre.

She has also been associate professor of health informatics, jointly appointed to the Melbourne Medical School and the Melbourne School of Engineering since 2011 and co-chair of the Australasian College of Health Informatics Education Committee since 2019.

Ms Gray said while digital technologies had been widely utilised by the banking, travel and entertainment sectors, the health sector had been slower to embrace this technology and the revolution was only getting started.

She said it was vital that everyone had access to accurate and credible health information -- from medical professionals, academics and government authorities to consumers -- and this was never more apparent than during the pandemic.

"Initially it was predicted it could take five years to develop a COVID-19 vaccine but with researchers able to share their data and analysis via digital technologies and collaboration we have seen a range of vaccines designed, developed and distributed for use in a much shorter timeframe," she said.

Digital technology was also vital in the shift to telehealth during the pandemic.

The dedication of Stephen Walls to the Country Fire Authority has been recognised, with the long-serving member announced as a recipient of the Australian Fire Services Medal.

The prestigious honour is awarded to those who have rendered distinguished service as a member of an Australian fire service.

The Campbells Creek resident said he was shocked to hear he'd received the award.

“It’s a great honour to be recognised for something that I enjoy doing, and it’s something you don’t expect but it means a lot that somebody has taken the time to put my name up,” he said.

“There are a lot of people who do great things in the fire services and the bar’s pretty high.”

Mr Walls said he initially joined CFA as a 17-year-old volunteer to run in the State Championships.

“Bill Rodda from Korumburra asked my dad to help mark out a running track.

“I told Bill I’d come down for a run and obviously joined the fire brigade to do that, then got involved with the operational side of things and really enjoyed the camaraderie and range of things to do.”

Missing dogs feared stolen

Five missing dogs are feared stolen after not being sighted since mid-May in the Macedon Ranges.

The dogs, all desirable breeds, disappeared within two weeks of each other from Lancefield, Clarkefield, Hesket and Benloch. missing are a black staghound, two dachshunds, a tri-coloured border collie and a pure-bred husky.

Owners have contacted local authorities and made a public appeal for help in returning the dogs safely home.

Efforts have included social media posts, posters and letterbox drops in the Newham, Romsey and Lancefield areas. Rewards have also been posted for credible information about the lost dogs.

Missing black staghound owner Prue Mathieson believed her dog had escaped from the yard but it had not been sighted since.

She connected with the other dog owners when she noticed their appeals for help on social media.

“We’re not certain that the dogs have been stolen but we find it curious that three of the five dogs are located close to each other and all are intact males,” Ms Mathieson told the Express.

“All five dogs haven’t had a single sighting. All the dogs are microchipped and we believe have ID tags."

Macedon Ranges Council's director of environment and planning Angela Hughes said the council had listed the dogs in the lost register.

"When owners suspect their pets have been stolen, we encourage them to make a report with the police and also their microchip registry," she said.

Hepburn residents have started their own war on waste, and they're looking for input from the community.

Resourceful Hepburn is a community group fighting to improve resource recovery and understand the community’s views on waste to guide future operations.

“We've put together a quick community survey to help better understand the community's views on this topic,” said Sophie Guerin on behalf of the group.

“The more responses we get, the better prepared we will be to help tackle the waste issues facing our community.”

The survey takes five minutes and asks people to rate the community’s response in various areas, as well as level of importance and ideas for improvement.

Refugee advocate to visit

Refugee advocate Jana Favero will speak at Castlemaine’s Phee Broadway Theatre next week as a highlight of Castlemaine's Refugee Week program of activities.

The title of the talk is 'Refugees, Reactions and the Australian Response'.

Ms Favero is the director of advocacy and campaigns at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre was invited

by Rural Australians for Refugees Castlemaine to speak at the special event.

RAR president Bronwen Machin said they were delighted that Favero had accepted their invitation.

The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, based in Melbourne, is at the forefront of work to redress injustices against refugees, in Australia. The organisation provides vital support to refugees and asylum seekers who otherwise frequently receive no other form of assistance. The ASRC speaks out and campaigns about issues such as the 230 refugees held against their will in Papua New Guinea and Nauru and more than 100 in detention facilities in Australia despite being brought here for urgent medical treatment.

The dire situation of asylum seekers has been again highlighted to Australians in the treatment of the Tamil family wrenched from their life in Biloela, Queensland, to detention.

They family have been held on Christmas Island since 2019. The recent emergency evacuation of threeyear-old Tharnicaa Murugappan and her mother to a hospital in Perth and the child’s diagnosis of sepsis and

pneumonia underlies the insecurity and injustice of their situation.

"The family is now being held in detention in breach of the government’s own policy that no children are to be held in immigration detention," Jana Favero said.

"Our government is choosing to be cruel. Instead of treating people humanely and fairly by offering safety and protection, our government is choosing to lock people up."

Jana Favero will provide an update on these and other critical issues concerning refugees and asylum seekers.

With more than 10 years’ experience at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, she is a regular spokesperson in breaking news on human rights and refugee policy on and offshore.

She contributes comment to major publications, ABC national and local radio and TV, The Guardian, New York Times and Al Jazeera.

Importantly, she will highlight key steps that can be taken to address Australian refugee policy and improve programs of practical assistance.

The Jana Favero talk will take place at the Phee Broadway Theatre from 7pm – 8.30pm on Wednesday June 23. Entry is by donation. All donations collected during Refugee Week will be distributed to refugee support agencies.

The talk is being organised by Rural Australians for Refugees Castlemaine in partnership with Mount Alexander Shire Council. Mount Alexander Shire was declared a Refugee Welcome Zone in 2014.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council's director of corporate and community John Hausler will depart the role on June 25 to take up the position of director of corporate services for the City of Ballarat.

Mr Hausler joined Macedon Ranges Council in January 2017 initially as director of corporate services. Mr Hausler then took on the role of director of corporate and community in July 2020 as part of the council’s restructure.

In this role, Mr Hausler led the children, youth and family services, community care, finance and reporting, and information services units.

Mr Hausler's significant achievements on council include the development of the Old Kyneton Primary School Master Plan, leading establishment of the Audit and Risk Committee, providing guidance and direction for implementation of the 2020 Local Government Act Reform, as well as the establishment of the Information Services Steering Committee.

Mr Hausler has worked to deliver multiple years of budgets, council plans and strategic resource plans to ensure the council is in a strong financial position to deliver services to the community.

Works continue to progress on Gisborne’s Saunders-Station Road intersection upgrade.

Intersection works progress Works continue to progress on Gisborne’s Saunders-Station Road intersection upgrade with wet weather causing only minor delays.

By the second half of June, weather permitting, Regional Roads Victoria expects to have completed works on the eastern side of Station Road.

These works include widening the intersection and the eastern side of Station Road to make room for new turning lanes and traffic signals, and completing the traffic lanes, bike lane and shared-user path along the eastern side of Station Road from the medical centre to the roundabout.

Once the eastern side is complete, work will start on the western side of Station Road.

There will be ongoing changes to traffic conditions from the second half of June for about three months during works on the western side

of Station Road.

Signage will direct road users through the service lane on the western side of Station Road during this time.

Access to some properties on this service lane may be disrupted for brief periods during this stage.

While RRV works on the western side of Station Road, access to Farrell Street will be from Saunders Road. Farrell Street will be temporarily closed at Station Road.

The service lane on the eastern side will temporarily become a one-way southbound traffic lane between Farrell Street and Saunders Road. Residents north of Farrell Street will need to access Station Road at Ross Watt Reserve.

Right turns from Station Road service lanes will be restricted at Octagonal Court and Farrell

Street and drivers will be directed to complete a U-turn.

Bus access will continue along Station Road.

The bus stop at the medical centre will temporarily be relocated nearby to be out of the work zone.

The Saunders Road intersection will remain open while RRV completes works on the western side of Station Road. A permanent raised platform will be in operation at the intersection.

Right turns from Saunders Road into Station Road will be permitted, apart from brief restrictions to complete construction works. When necessary, signage will direct northbound traffic to turn left onto Station Road and complete a U-turn at the roundabout.

Road users are encouraged to allow extra travel time and to obey signs indicating changes in traffic conditions.

Kyneton Horticultural Society will host Peter Leigh from Post Office Farm Nursery at Ashbourne for a 'welcome back' speaker evening on Monday June 21.

Peter is probably the world's best helleborus genus specialist. He'll enlighten guests as to how best to grow them, and show many of the species and hybrid varieties. If in flower, he may bring some of the amazing colours he has bred over the last 20 years of growing helleborus, including the rarer yellows and mixed colours.

There will be helleborus for sale.

Bring along a supper plate to share, and, if you like, something from your garden to share or show, and see what others are growing at this time of year.

Nominate a senior

There are seniors in the Macedon Ranges deserving recognition for their community work. Jean Hedington knows this because she has worked alongside many of them.

Recognised for more than 50 years of volunteer work, Jean was named COTA Senior Achiever in 2019 and she is now encouraging local nominations to this year’s Victorian Senior of the Year Awards.

“There are a lot of people out there who are deserving of these awards but someone needs to nominate them,” Jean told the Express.

“The experience that these people have is invaluable and many have contributed to their community and worthy organisations over the years. We’ve got a good and generous community.”

The Kyneton resident said she had never taken on any of her volunteer roles for any reward other than the satisfaction that came with helping others.

Jean is a life member of three organisations – Vision Australia, the Kyneton Horticultural Society and the Kyneton Agricultural Society – and contributes to many other local organisations and causes.

Her volunteer work has spanned about 19 different organisations including Uniting Church Op Shop (more than 40 years), RM Begg Auxiliary, Kyneton Daffodil Festival, fundraising for the Red Shield Appeal and involvement at Kyneton Primary and Kyneton High School.

Categories for the Victorian Senior of the Year Awards include the Premier’s Award for Victorian Senior of the Year, Promotion of Multiculturalism Award, Healthy and Active Living Award, Veteran Community Award, Ageing Well Award and COTA Victoria Senior Achiever Awards.

Every nominee will receive a certificate acknowledging their contributions, while award recipients will be honoured at Government House at the Victorian Seniors Festival in October.

Kyneton’s community came from not so far and wide, given the 5km radius restriction, but they came from nearby and in droves, raising just over $8000 for the group.

Little Swallow’s Daniel said they were always so humbled by the support of the community when they held these events.

"Our customers are owed the thanks and gratitude for the outcome of these events,” he said.

Ed agreed, adding that they loved working with local groups to create a supportive community environment.

"We are just a conduit for those groups to perform the incredible work they do," Ed said.

1st Kyneton's Corinne said no words could express how grateful they all were for the support they'd received from the community, and how appreciative they were for the generosity of the team at Little Swallow Café.

"These are tough times for businesses," she said.

"They are heroes in our eyes and it is very hard to accept help when you feel as a Scout group it really should be us helping out the community, not the other way."

Kyneton’s Little Swallow Café is already well known for its commitment to community, but it raised the bar recently with its latest venture with local scout group, 1st Kyneton.

Cafe owners Daniel and Ed first got alerted to the plight of the group, which has been doing it tough in recent years, when incoming Group Leader Corinne Twomey put a call out for a second-hand oven.

They quickly came to the party with a new oven for the 1st Kyneton Scout Hall and threw down a challenge to get the group’s Cubs and Scouts involved in a High Tea fundraiser to raise money for a long-awaited heater.

1st Kyneton families spent days preparing by baking goods for the event, along with Kyneton’s CWA Twilighters who made all the scones.

Scouts and Cubs were looking forward to being able to work with café staff in real roles, from serving customers to front-of-house duties. However, disappointment struck swiftly just two days out, when the state's snap lockdown was called, putting all plans on hold and potentially a lot of food to waste.

Wildlife rescuer Sue Anderson with the kangaroo and the jar removed.

A stressed kangaroo with a jar stuck on its head was discovered in New Gisborne last week. Gisborne veterinary nurse Megan Sutherland reported the sighting to Wildlife Victoria and rescuer Sue Anderson was called to tranquilise the roo. "It took some time to locate her as she went into thick bushland," Sue said.

"Eventually she went to sleep and with the help of Megan we managed to remove the old pickle jar.

"The female kangaroo was lucky to be rescued in time with only superficial wear marks to her throat."

The Sunbury Community Soccer Club played against the Woodend Dragons at their Buffalo Stadium home ground.

While I can’t tell you who won out of the various games that were played, and I don’t really care, the event was splendid! Everyone enjoyed the camaraderie, the lovely sunshine and the fabulous barbecue put on by Woodend.

Congratulations to Dave Keenan and Steve Graves (Woodend) and Matula Osborn and Ishah Clay (Sunbury) for your tireless work, and to all the parents who attended and support this wonderful and healthy endeavour.

So good to see the kids not staring at computer screens or phones!

From an early age, men are often told to suck it up and get on with it.

Boys were bullied and had no idea how to manage their emotions. These boys became men and had no skills being assertive and often had poor self esteem.

Men are carrying a heavy load and the Lifeskills program works to peel back the

layers and make sense of the chaos that can have such an impact on their lives.

The Lifeskills program is a six-unit program that has assisted many men over the past five years.

It does not aim to fix anything. Its intention is to give men clarity on their options and may empower them to make decisions to a better life.

This year’s national Men’s Health Week has the theme Connecting for Men’s Health.

“It might be through hosting an event to create awareness, through to picking up the phone to a loved one or sharing resources and information.

“Our research has found that young men are starting to seek help and advice more freely but more needs to be done to support all men to reach out for help when they need it.”

Among younger male respondents, those aged 16-25 years, the majority believe that men and boys would need to drink alcohol in order to be able to talk about their emotions to friends or family.

Despite some of the challenges highlighted, findings also indicate that the majority of survey respondents agree that men feel connected to others in their local community and have relationships and connections that promote good mental health.

Jeremy Hearne, general manager at Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health, is a member of the working group overseeing the project.

“We now have the information we need to start a genuine conversation with the community on the impact of these attitudes and behaviours on the health of men and boys," Mr Hearne said.

"Our next steps will be to work in partnership with local services and the community to design and pilot activities that can improve the health men and boys and those around them.”

Men's Health Week aims at raising public awareness of the health matters impacting men and boys, and encourages males in our lives to seek early support for their mental and physical health, before they become a problem.

Results from a community survey targeting residents of the Macedon Ranges has highlighted that there is work to be done to ensure men and boys get the support they need to live healthier lives.

The survey is part of #thehumancode, a project led by local organisations along with Orygen, Australia’s centre of excellence in youth mental health, with activities funded by the North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network and Vic Health.

Associate Professor Simon Rice, project lead at Orygen, said the survey asked community members for their views on what it meant to be a man or boy living in the Macedon Ranges.

“Only 55 per cent of people who responded agreed that males in the region are comfortable seeking out health services when they need support,” Prof Rice said.

“A further 57 per cent of respondents agreed that men and boys would not be comfortable talking about their mental health before things reached crisis point."

The survey also found that nearly half of males felt there was an expectation to take on traditional masculine roles such as being the main provider or always being strong. Research shows that adherence to these traditional masculine stereotypes is associated with higher rates of suicide, depression and anxiety, risky behaviours such as drink driving,

any symptoms. Problems like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes often have no symptoms but can lead to heart disease and stroke if left undetected.

"Sexual health is also seldom discussed among men," Dr Smith says.

"Erectile problems are not just frustrating, but can also be an early marker of cardiovascular disease.

"Sexually transmitted infections can often have no symptoms. Please don’t delay this conversation with your GP." Springs Medical has a dedicated team of GPs in Kyneton with an interest in sexual, mental and preventative healthcare.

A keen group of Kyneton Men’s Shed members got to work recently building a community vegetable and herb garden outside their shed near Bupa in Kyneton.

The raised beds, constructed by shed member Robin Burgess almost two years ago, had been sitting idle in the shadows of the building.

The project team, led by keen gardeners and foodies Gennaro Mazzella and George Biron, put in a big effort to empty, relocate and refill the raised beds ready for planting of the winter seedlings.

Proud of the team effort, Gennaro said it was important to grow fresh vegetables and herbs, and then use them to create beautiful food to eat and enjoy each other’s company.

"We are on our way, and today showed that our members are enthusiastic to grow healthy food, eat and have fun together," he said.

"We’re hoping to expand our Men’s Shed garden in the future and produce more to offer the community. It’s important that all people have access to good, nutritious food."

To feed the workers, the regular barbecue was complemented with a delicious mushroom risotto prepared by George Biron.

"It would be great to start a cooking group at the shed, so having fresh veggies and herbs straight from the garden will be perfect," George said.

"Preparing and eating food together is a great way to provide support, friendship and good times for members.”

After a difficult 18 months for the shed, the committee is finding that new activities and fresh recruits have brought a brighter outlook for all the members.

Enthused to see revitalisation of the shed taking place, president Phil Thomas said it was wonderful that all the hard work put in by the committee was showing its worth.

"We are now being contacted by men with varying interests to the traditional shed offering, and from a wide age range.”

“The shed is here to support men of all ages and interests they may be keen to pursue, from gardening to motorcycle restoration, or cooking to a game of cards.

"Whatever new ideas come up, we’ll look at them. Our facilities are great and there’s flexibility to cater for more activities.”

Kyneton Men’s Shed welcomes new members to join the increasing range of activities, or just come and meet for a chat.

The junior season in the Riddell District Football League is set to resume this Sunday, June 20.

“After a very tough 2020 and he latest lockdowns, we are very pleased that we are able to alter our season slightly to ensure that we still get all scheduled 14 rounds in, as well as a three-week finals series,” league general manager Jordan Doyle said.

GOLF results

Golf courses hit hard Fierce and widespread storms last week caused significant damage to many golf courses across the district, with Trentham hit extremely hard.

Countless trees have been uprooted or had limbs torn off; some courses are likely to be out of action for several days despite intensive working bees over the weekend.

Club captain Simon Overden said there was plenty of work to be done to make the popular Trentham course playable again.

About 20 volunteers, with an excavator helping, were in action at the weekend.

“Any helpers, particularly with heavy equipment to move fallen trees, will be very welcome,” he said.

When Trentham re-opens for play, it could be initially confined to 10 holes. It’s a

similar scenario at other district clubs.

“Simply devastating” was how Di Brennan (club secretary) summed up the situation at Lancefield, where working bees have made some inroads to the damage.

Kyneton Golf Course had plenty of trees – there’s fewer now.

Kyneton club secretary Jenny Kerr said 20 dedicated volunteers had made a big impact with the help of an excavator on Saturday morning.

“There were four major trees across fairways ... they’ve been cleared, but there’s many damaged trees still requiring attention.

“We also lost some of the ones that seemed to get in the way of errant shots,” Kerr quipped, on the way to play a social Ambrose round yesterday morning. Kyneton is pleased to be open for play again so quickly.

“A big thank you must go to all members who have helped,” she said.

Woodend was also hit hard, with Saturday’s scheduled competition cancelled.

Working bees have made good progress towards making the course playable.

Some of the damaged trees, whether ornamental of native, had been in their prime.

Golf has been hit hard by COVID; with normal revenue sources diminished. Now the freakish wind storms last week have been a further blow.

Mount Macedon Thanks to a hardy team of volunteers

who turned up late in the week to begin the job of clearing debris from across the course, the Mount Macedon club was able to get a round in.

Martin Bona of the Victorian Emergency Management Institute is also to be thanked for his kind offer of a cuppa, an opportunity to charge mobiles and to open their fridges/ freezers to those without power.

The Wednesday gentlemen had a lie in due to the predicted torrential rains but will be back this week.

It was difficult to countenance the difference just a few days makes when Saturday was still and even the sun was out, compared to the deluge of biblical proportions endured earlier in the week.

A-grade and overall winner was Mark Burrage (11) with 38 points, while runnerup Geoff Pickles (23) was the only other player to achieve handicap or better with 36 points.

The club is hopeful it can finally welcome the novice ladies for the first Ladies Get Into Golf session this Sunday; this is dependent upon the easing of travel restrictions between Greater Melbourne and the regions.

Romsey Circumstances meant Romsey golfers played a two-person Ambrose on Saturday, with the Medal of Medallists held over.

Damage to the course’s trees was very evident with piles of broken branches and felled trees in the middle of the park awaiting a clean up for firewood and then burning.

An assessor from the shire council marked several trees to be removed.

In cool conditions distance off the tees was paramount.

On a still, chilly afternoon some excellent golf unfolded.

Ambrose winners were Mal Mottram – Craig Sany with 63.75, fro Jost and Mick Squire 64.25.

Mick Squire, Jim Patton and Jason Langton finished with the nearest the pin awards.

DELAYED PENNANT The delayed women’s pennant grand finals in the Dalhousie District Golf Association are scheduled to be held at Euroa next Monday (June 21).

The division one final is between Kilmore and Seymour, with the tee-off at 9.30am.

Romsey and Lancefield division two players are scheduled to hit off at 10am.

Due to COVID restrictions, only spectators basically involved with the participating teams are permitted to attend.

The DDGA wishes the four finalists all the best.

Gallopers in fine form Bill West

Revhead, Snappy Magnus and Lovin’ Laughs have something in common.

The three Kyneton-trained gallopers all won races on the Ballarat synthetic last week, much to the delight of their connections.

The victories spread over Monday and Thursday were sandwiched in between the absolutely devastating wind and rain fury that inflicted unfathomable havoc right across the district and far beyond. Mother Nature had her say, LOUDLY. Revhead, a name that sounds like it could attract a cult following if he goes on to better things, broke his maiden status at his seventh start.

In the George Osborne stable, the three-year-old gelding sat off the pace and once leading Victorian jockey John Allen made his move, the race was in his keeping.

The win partly made amends for the Osborne-trained second starter Kyla being narrowly beaten at Geelong the previous day.

A TONIC FOR TRAINER Snappy Magnus ($7) won his second race for Danielle Chapman, who has been hampered for several weeks with severe back pain that led to a successful operation at the Epworth Hospital.

Snappy Magnus, who ran third at Ballarat on May 17, is a real family owned horse with three generations sharing in the success as part owners.

Chapman felt that Snappy Magnus would be a good chance on the synthetic tack, and husband Steve was entrusted to seeing the galloper left their North Woodend property to arrive at Ballarat racecourse, and return home safely.

Ridden a masterly race in front by Craig Newitt, Snappy Magnus fought on to win by 0.1 length in the BM58 event over 1000m.

Chapman, now well on the road to recovery, said

Snappy Magnus, who now has two wins from six starts, was a lovely, determined little horse.

ON THURSDAY When Kyneton trainer Mick Sell won with Lovin’ Laughs at Echuca and Moe last November at his first two starts, he stated the four-year-old was “a work in progress”.

The work is continuing as Lovin’ Laughs took out the RMBL Investments Rising Stars event at Ballarat on Thursday.

Apprentice Madison Lloyd, who has now ridden 50 winners on provincial tracks this season, brought the Kyneton galloper down the outside with a well-timed run to score by 0.8 lengths.

Lovin’ Laughs was bred by Leigh and Marty Miles, based in the Romsey-Monegeetta area, and best known for their successes in the harness racing industry.

The Miles family members are having plenty of fun with Lovin’ Laughs, only the second galloper they have bred.

His third win from nine starts took stake earnings to almost $60,000.

Mini Rangers take the next step

The Macedon and Mitchell Rangers came together for another week of friendly rivalry.

This time the Macedon Rangers made the trip to Broadford to be welcomed by the Mitchell Rangers.

The weather was perfect for football and to see so many kids eagerly waiting for the first whistle is what it is all about.

This week saw several of Mini Rangers graduate to the Under 8s, under the guidance of coach Bodey Dittloff. It didn’t take long for the nerves to settle nerves and an inaugural goal to be scored only to be topped by the celebration. Rangers white and green were up and down the pitch, promising ball skills and a never say die attitude on display.

SPORTS wrap Billy Cart Challenge is racing again

Castlemaine’s favourite event the Castlemaine Billy Cart Challenge is back.

“Everyone knows Castlemaine is the home of the hot rod. We’re reminding everyone it's also the billy cart capital of the world,” organiser Camilo Demarco says with a smile.

“Sunday October 10 is race day, so tell your aunty to hold off on the wedding and lock in the date.”

The organising team are calling out to the community to embrace the motto 'Building Carts, Building Community' and team up with others to get creative and put an entry in. The event is held during Mental Health Week and works to bring the community together.

Organisers have changed the race location to allow for a billy cart race that is more fun, inclusive and easier to manage.

“This year we are moving the race to Langslow Street - the industrial heartland of Castlemaine where the track has some twists and turns and the opportunity for head to head racing” Camilo explains.

“It’s also a longer track for kids to race on which is what it’s all about.”

Event organisers, Camilo 'Silverado' Demarco and Jane 'Fast Lane' Goodrich, successfully resurrected the popular family-friendly event in 2017 after last being run in 2003.

The event won the MASC Australia Day Award in 2018 for Community

Event of the Year.

The race first ran in the late forties and for decades has been a key part of Castlemaine’s history.

“Keeping kids on the streets since 1949, that’s the motto for this year. It highlights the long history of this event here in Castlemaine and the love people have for it," Camilo explains.

There will be a display of Castlemaine’s finest hot rods at the year’s race. This display will draw on the rich historical connection between hot rod enthusiasts building billy carts in their youth.

With more than 50 volunteers and a crowd of more than 2000 in previous years, the event is a big day and attracts not only locals but interstate contestants keen to have a go.

An integral part of the event is all the colour, action and creativity. Once again there will be music, stunts and appearances by local community groups. Among the trophies to be won is the Trishy Hay Memorial Trophy for the most creative billy cart.

Expect live music, DJs, coffee and food, lots of things on wheels and official Castlemaine Billy Cart Challenge merchandise.

Magpies tackle the Storm

Castlemaine Football Netball Club was pleased to return to the field and court last weekend after a two-week hiatus due to the COVID lockdown and subsequent restrictions.

In a rescheduled round seven fixture, Castlemaine made the trek north to Triple M Park to tackle Strathfieldsaye Storm.

It proved a very challenging day for the Seniors going down to a rampaging Storm opposition by 33 goals.

Shining lights for the young Magpies were Liam Wilkinson, Brodie Byrne, David Wilson, John Watson, Will Moran and

Jackson Hood.

The Reserves also found the going tough against a polished Storm opponent. They managed to put a goal on the board off the boot of Joel Wootton in the final term to secure some reward for their tireless efforts.

Best on ground were Jay Hardman, Nicholas O'Brien, Lachlan Hyland, Luke Pritchard and Samuel Banko.

The Magpie Under 18s held their own against Strath in the first quarter and only trailed by eight points at quarter time.

Storm broke the shackles in the third term kicking four goals to Castlemaine's one to increase their margin to 32 points.

The visitors managed another goal in the final term but Storm went on with the job kicking another three goals to win by 47 points.

On the netball court it was a similar story, with Storm claiming a big win in A Grade. The B Grade side faired better managing to get 22 goals on the board, while B Reserve also found their match up a tough contest.

The 17 & Under girls dug deep and also produced a great performance to net 22 goals but Strath proved too strong claiming a 31-goal win.

This weekend Castlemaine will play host to Golden Square at the Camp Reserve in rescheduled round eight matches.

Woodend-Hesket provided five footballers to enable Kyneton Reserves to field a team, a gesture much appreciated.

The home club has considerable depth on its football playing list, and some of the topliners were still in action on Saturday.

Kyneton’s senior footballers have been hard hit by injuries this season; captain Hamish Govan is still sidelined with a bad leg injury and it may be six weeks before he can return to the playing field.

strongly when under siege at times.

Home ground knowledge was evident with forwards knowing how to create and lead to space.

Dangerous forwards Pat McKenna and Jack Scanlon each finished with five goals, and a 55-points lead at half time was converted into a 100-point victory with eight goals in the last term.

Both clubs are looking ahead, and respective coaches Rob Waters (Gisborne) and Paul Chapman (Kyneton) acknowledged playing at Gisborne had been a way out of a predicament for the league.

“Over 60 players, many young kids, were really pleased to be able to play footy today,” Waters said.

Three players debuted in the top Bulldogs’ side and received a warm welcome from teammates.

An uphill battle for netballers Tiger Talk

Hit hard by injuries and player unavailability due to lockdown restrictions, Kyneton netballers faced an uphill battle against welldrilled Gisborne opposition on Saturday.

The Tigers deserve plenty of praise for their efforts, some of the girls playing in two games (eight quarters) just to ensure the matches went ahead.

A depleted A-squad fought hard, with the A Reserve side producing the highest tally from the club’s five teams.

Gisborne eventually prevailed 45-37, with Lauren Angwin Kyneton’s best through her versatile play and never-give-up attitude.

In A-grade, the powerful Gisborne side

monopolised the ball on the way to a 74-24 victory, with the very dependable Brooke Mangan Kyneton’s best.

The Tigers’ Under 17s may have gone down 67-21, but not without a fight. Charli Copeland took on leadership responsibilities with coaches stuck in Melbourne, and despite being injured, returned to the court and took out the incentive award.

Mid-courters Talia Willmott, Millie Clifford and Talia Tobin worked hard, and defenders Lauren Girvan, Tash Baron and Bonny Gread tried hard under constant pressure.

From a Tigers’ perspective, a great effort after a mish-mash week.

Chapman said the process of lifting the Tigers up the ladder was not going to be achieved overnight.

“We should learn a lot playing against top teams over the next three rounds,” he said.

The Tigers are home to unbeaten ladder-leader Sandhurst on Saturday, whole Gisborne hosts down-the-ladder Maryborough and will be looking for a percentage boost.

Now third on the ladder, the Bulldogs are well aware of the importance of being able to finish in the top three at the end of the home and away season.

Wood believes the club has not yet been able to field its strongest side this season due to injuries and unavailability.

Kyneton is hoping for a big turn-up of supporters at the Showgrounds on Saturday.

Women’s football

was a constant option and Alayne Burns proved her versatility at both ends of the court.

Wing attack Esther McIntyre deserved the Naturally Hair award for a 100 per cent effort across the whole game despite a 69-23 scoreline.

B-grade was also hit hard through injuries and coach unavailability, and Ash O’Gara impressed in a new position to work well with captain Lily Nolte. Myriam McIntyre and Loryn Savoia were the other Tiger standouts in their defensive roles.

Improvisation was needed and despite a 56-24 home side victory, the Tigers should be proud of their game plan and space creation across the court.

Kyneton’s senior women’s football side faced up to a formidable top-of-the-ladder Golden Square on Sunday.

The slick-moving Bulldogs controlled the first half, but the Tigers managed to regroup and apply some pressure in the second half.

Belinda Hateley starred in the ruck for the Tigers, dominating in the midfield where Heidi Erasmus and Elizabeth Snell were also prominent.

Natalie Korinfsky, Jordan Savoia and Shannon White also figured in the best players for the Tigers.

Golden Square justified their ladder position with a 14.10 to 1.1 victory.

Where there’s a will there’s a way! This is how a 'no spectators' Bendigo League fixture between Gisborne and Kyneton was staged at Gardiner Reserve on Saturday.

Gisborne teams proved too strong in both football and netball right across the board against the Tigers, with the decision to rejig the fixture and stage the matches there hammered out late last week.

“The path this year will be difficult at times, but after a COVID-decimated 2020 season, our clubs and the Bendigo League are eager to support our players, who just want to play,” the league stated.

Gisborne and Kyneton, the southernmost clubs, were hardest hit with the short-term (hopefully) COVID restrictions banning travel for more than 25 kilometres for anyone in the metropolitan area. Both clubs have plenty of players living in the metropolitan area.

“It’s a good outcome for both clubs,” Gisborne Football Netball Club president John Wood said at Gardiner Reserve on Saturday.

He praised the Bendigo League board for listening to the proposition to meet the needs of the two southern most clubs and enable football and netball to go ahead.

An overall aim is to ensure each club plays all others at least once this season.

Wood said a considerable number of country leagues did not play over the Queen's Birthday weekend.

Wood and his Kyneton counterpart Hayden Evans were in agreement this was not ideal, but it was a practical way out.

There may have been very different senior and reserves football teams on the field – Gisborne having 12 regulars and Kyneton 17 missing from their two teams due to the travel restrictions.
