Glen Junor gone Land known as Glen Junor has been thrown out of Macedon Ranges Shire Council's controversial 30-year Gisborne Futures draft plan.

It came down to the wire in a 4-4 vote with mayor Jennifer Anderson using her casting vote to remove the 210-hectare property from the proposed settlement boundary and structure plan last week.

The land at 284 Kilmore Road was controversially rushed to be included in Gisborne Futures last year in a 6-3 vote that went against council officer recommendation.

The property is the proposed launch-ground for a unique biodiversity sensitive urban design concept to set aside one hectare of land for nature or community, for every hectare of urban development.

Since the draft Gisborne Futures plan was endorsed last year, as one of the last approvals of the outgoing council, it has been subject to much community criticism. It controversially proposes an expansion of the Gisborne Business Park and the introduction of three and four-storey buildings within the township.

Gisborne man collapses An elderly man collapsed outside the Gisborne SES headquarters in Roberston Street about 1.50pm last Tuesday afternoon.

A bystander raised the alarm with the fire brigade next door who rushed to the scene to find the man unconscious and not breathing.

Bystanders were attempting CPR before police and firefighters took over with a defibrillator.

Lt Bevan Moody of the Gisborne Fire Brigade said they were able to get the man breathing again at about 2.30pm.

He was taken by road ambulance to Melbourne but died the next morning.

Sport precinct in sight

Two opportunities have presented to secure funding for the long-awaited $41.4 million Macedon Ranges Sports Precinct.

The project aims to address the drastic need for sporting grounds and facilities in the Macedon Ranges and attract elite-level competition, spread across two interconnected sites in New Gisborne.

Macedon Ranges Council will apply for funds through both round two of the Growing Suburbs Fund and round five of the Building Better Regions Fund to help make up the project's shortfall.

To date, the Victorian Government has committed $11.6M to the project, which comes on top of the council's planned $10M contribution and $100,000 in support from AFL Victoria.

The council was unsuccessful in two previous applications to BBRF in 2017 and 2018.

This most recent attempt seeks $2,300,000 for the road intersection component of the sports precinct project.

Concept designs are complete for the intersec-

tion, with multiple options under consideration, and are estimated to cost about $4,600,000.

Should the grant application be successful, a pre-commitment of $2,300,000 towards the project is required of the council's 2021/22 budget.

The project must be completed by December 2023 and has risks including a potentially 12-month-long land acquisition timeframe and native vegetation removal that may take up to eight months.

The Growing Suburbs Fund application seeks $1,500,000 for the external shared community spaces and associated infrastructure, including the playground, cycling and fitness loop, barbecue areas, central paved pedestrian link, and associated landscaping and infrastructure.

This part of the project is expected to cost $3,000,000.

The GSF is a dollar-for-dollar grant and requires a pre-commitment of $1,500,000 towards the project from the council's budget.

The World Day of Prayer is an international, inter-church event that enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world, their hopes, concerns and prayers.

Councillor Dominic Bonanno argued the development's removal at this stage "effectively cuts the community out of having a say about Glen Junor".

"Let's remember: it is a draft Gisborne Futures proposal… we can still modify things," he said.

"To remove Glen Junor as proposed appears both premeditated and premature and most importantly, contrary to the principles of good governance and I cannot support it."

Crs Bill West, Janet Pearce and Mark Ridgeway agreed "process was important" and felt the need to see the impending council officer report on the project. Others argued submissions and other relevant detail had already been considered and were informing the decision.

Cr Annette Death said Glen Junor closely bordered Riddells Creek - a town that faced its own issues around infrastructure investment and potential pressures from the proposed Amess Road development.

"Is this the most appropriate place for the development is the question here and, because of that, it's a very distracting conversation," Cr Death said.

"We should be focusing on the Gisborne Futures project and what's actually going to happen in the centre of Gisborne and getting that part right before we then embrace and expand the township boundaries to include Glen Junor and the substantial development that will arise from that."

Cr Anderson agreed the council should focus efforts and resources on the big issues already present in the Gisborne Futures project.

Glen Junor has also attracted a high level of interest from fans and critics alike.

Cr Geoff Neil spearheaded the move to delete Glen Junor, stating ratepayers should not have to burden the cost of this developer's plan.

"There are two other ways forward for the Glen Junor team to achieve the outcome they desire - the first is to approach the minister to seek direct assistance from his resources, and the second is a standalone self-funded planning amendment," he advised.

"Glen Junor is part of the Gisborne district. It is not part of the Gisborne township. It should not be included in Gisborne Futures.

"Gisborne Futures by itself is a mammoth undertaking. We need to get it right.

We need to concentrate our resources to that achievement."

Tracing the property's history, Cr Anne Moore said the property was initially purchased in 2015 as Farm Zoned land and the landowners had taken gradual steps to increase its capacity for subdivision.

Glen Junor is currently zoned Rural Living and can already be subdivided to one to four hectares.

"They now want to move the markers again and be included within the town boundary, which would mean the property would change from Rural Living to Residential," Cr Moore said.

"Although it seems 'all well good' it could blow out to potentially be another Brooking Willowbank Road development and I am not willing to risk that."

Mondo lounge is back After a year like no other, the Mondo Lounge Youth Space is opening up its doors again to welcome young people back for face-to-face programming from tomorrow.

Mount Alexander Shire Council's Mondo Lounge is a weekly youth space that offers free activities, workshops and training opportunities for people aged 1225 in a positive environment.

"We are so excited to be able to return to face-to-face programs," the council's youth activities officer Jodie Hearn said.

"It was great to have had an online alternative for our youth space last year, but it's so much nicer being able to see the young people in person and run hands-on workshops and activities again."

In order to adhere to COVIDSafe guidelines, Mondo Lounge will be splitting the age groups into two separate sessions.

Mondo Lounge is open from 3.30pm to 6pm Wednesday afternoons during the school term for 12-14-year-olds, and Friday afternoons for those aged 15 and over. Both sessions will be at Castlemaine Community House at 30 Templeton Street, Castlemaine.

"By running Mondo Lounge over two days a week we will be able to provide a safe space to hangout after school, while still social distancing," Ms Hearn said.

"Splitting the age groups also makes it possible to offer more young people the opportunity to get involved in the activities we offer."

Have your say on Frederick Street

Questions about the unsewered state of Glenlyon properties and monitoring of onsite wastewater management systems were raised at last month's Hepburn Shire Council meeting, the first one held for 2021.

Margaret Lockwood pointed out the current and proposed new Planning Scheme for the shire would allow infill of the Glenlyon town zone with up to 180 lots that were either vacant, or used as farmland.

Ms Lockwood asked if council could guarantee that without installing a town sewerage system and by relying on property owners taking responsibility for a further 180 unmonitored onsite wastewater treatment systems, risks to public health, the environment, the economy and legal risks could be addressed.

Mayor Lesley Hewitt replied that council and responsible referral authorities had a number of systems and processes in place to assess and mitigate known risks.

Council is currently reviewing its domestic wastewater management plan, an agreed plan between council and water authorities.

"The DWMP, combined with the strengthening of the Environmental Protection Act and requirement that all planning permits within this area are referred to the relevant water authority appropriately manages and attempts to mitigate risk," Cr Hewitt stated.

Residents of Kyneton South say Harpers Lane could not cope with the amount of traffic a proposed 87-lot subdivision would create.

A six double-storey unit development in Gisborne has been rejected for its bulk, lack of parking and failure to meet neighbourhood character.

Last Wednesday Macedon Ranges Shire Council refused the permit for 64 Hamilton Street and 27 Lyell Street that also proposed a waiver of visitor car parking.

Council officers recommended council approval for the plan with 17 detailed conditions but councillors were not convinced.

Councillor Rob Guthrie said the plan presented issues around neighbourhood character, setbacks from the street, visitor car parking and substandard subdivision in the future.

“Housing around the immediate area mainly comprises single-storey weatherboard houses with hip and gable roof form.

This proposal does not support or protect that neighbourhood character,” he said.

“The units are only three metres from Neal Street, which means they will dominate the streetscape and they are too bulky to be so close to the street.

“Visitor car parking should also be provided on site as there are already substantial parking issues around this development.

This development will make it worse.”

Cr Anne Moore supported Cr Guthrie’s reasons for refusal. The proposal was rejected at the vote.

Residents of Kyneton South have won the support of the local council in their fight against an 87-lot subdivision for Harpers Lane but the decision will ultimately fall to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

The developer has taken the matter to VCAT after council failed to decide on the application within the prescribed time, but councillors determined at their meeting last week that they would have refused it.

Council’s director of planning and environment Angela Hughes told the meeting officers had considered the application against the planning scheme, and 26 objections received, and found key problems centred on it not responding appropriately to the character and constraints of the site and surrounds with lot sizes that would not facilitate an adequately low-density development character in context of interfaces with surrounding properties.

“On this basis it is recommended that council resolve it does not support the application and that council would have refused the application had it not been appealed to VCAT,” Ms Hughes said.

point that the application did not take into account the heritage value of the bluestone pavers within Harpers Lane.

The motion was supported by all councillors. Cr Mark Ridgeway had earlier declared an interest.

Local resident Chris Kakris said objectors were buoyed by the decision of council and hopeful they would get a chance at VCAT to register their issues.

“Our current neighbourhood character is lots of farmland, lots of rural land and large blocks of two acres and above so the proposal to put in 87 half-acre blocks is definitely out of character,” Mr Kakris said.

“The current proposal puts all of the traffic from the subdivision onto Harpers Lane, and Harpers Lane is already very dangerous.”

Neighbouring landowners Ruth and Ian Williams said the intersection posed the triple danger of the bend in the road on a hill, the western sun, and fog and black ice in winter.

“The intersection has proved difficult already to make adequate safety improvements,” Ms Williams said.

“Blind Freddie can see that the corner of Lauriston Reservoir Road and Harpers Lane is dangerous already, so to spill 400 more trips a day onto Harpers Lane from an 87-lot subdivision won’t work.”

A crackdown on speeding motorists in Macedon is expected as trouble roads have been identified around the main township.

Macedon Ranges Council will liaise with local police to closely monitor areas identified as speeding hot-spots.

Residents named Smith Street, Victoria Street, Carrington Street and McBean Avenue as problem areas in complaints to the council last year.

Resulting council vehicle counts confirmed speeding in some areas including Carrington Street which revealing that 15 per cent of vehicles were travelling above 71 km/h where the speed limit is 60 km/h.

Problematic roads in and around the township were assessed for speed reductions but a report to council this month found there was "no opportunity for justifiable speed reduction at this time".

Any speed change on councilmanaged roads requires approval from Regional Roads Victoria and is assessed against the state's 'Speed Zoning Guidelines'.

A speed assessment will be repeated if there any change to road characteristics or development in the area but at this time Smith Street is the only location which may be considered for reduction to 50 km/h in the future.

The council is now undertaking a Road Safety and Mobility Strategy, which will include driver education campaigns focused on speed management, along with action to increase police monitoring of Macedon roads identified as speeding hot-spots.

The future of Romsey Hotel and the former Romsey supermarket could soon become clearer.

The two prominent sites have sat vacant for years in key township locations and now Macedon Ranges Council is seeking discussions with the two landowners.

Last Wednesday, Cr Geoff Neil requested council's acting CEO John Nevins to open conversations with Romsey Hotel's Jim Hogan and the Habib family to understand future plans for the sites.

The hotel, on the corner of Barry and Main Streets, shut in October 2017 and the supermarket, opposite the Romsey Hub, has been shut longer.

Cr Neil said the two commercial sites were important to the Romsey community and was supported with a unanimous vote at the council's ordinary meeting.

Fellow East Ward councillor Bill West said the future of these two sites was of interest to local residents and visitors alike.

"Those two properties have been vacant for some time and create a lot of comment from people and visitors to the town," Cr West said.

"They are strategically located and hopefully there may be some good come out of any discussions that are initiated."

Mr Nevins will write to both parties and report back to council with the outcome of any meetings.

Homelessness — a series of unfortunate events Local Gilda Blacher, 52, will shared her lived experience of homelessness at Wednesday's My Home Forum.

Gilda was born into a privileged, middle-class family in South Africa. She went on to gain two degrees, build a career in the community arts sector, run a successful television production company, and buy a large home.

Ten years ago, Gilda, her husband and daughter immigrated to Australia.

They starting out renting a large home in Sydney while they worked to establish a new business, after which they would buy their own home. Life was looking good.

But within a few years, it was all gone.

Unlucky ventures, a marriage collapse and bankruptcy wiped it all out. Suddenly, Gilda found herself a single parent, thrown into the battle of the region's gruelling, dog-eat-dog rental market. She picks up whatever work she can, mostly only casual and part-time - nothing ongoing or stable.

Over the past 10 years, Ms Blacher and her daughter have moved home eight times. They have couched surfed at friends' homes for months on end. Her daughter has attended nine schools.

"I always say that all it takes is a series of unfortunate events," Ms Blacher said.

"I never for one second of my life imagined that I would be in this situation.

"Not in a million years - it was simply something that never, ever crossed my mind."

Ms Blancher is speaking out and sharing her story because "people don't know who we are".

"There is a very real blanket view of what type of people become homeless

or at risk of becoming homeless," Ms Blacher said.

"And there is always an undercurrent of people thinking that you must have done something wrong, or that you are somehow to blame for your situation.

"But how many pay cheques are you away from not being able to pay your mortgage or rent? How many circumstances need to tilt out of your favour for you to find yourself without a home?

"Anything can happen to anyone, but no one is listening to us.

"Often I've woken up in terror at 3am, knowing that we must be out of our current rental in 10 days, and I still haven't managed to secure the next one.

"The real housing crisis is about sleeping on friends' couches with your child because there just aren't enough rentals and of the five affordable rental properties on the market, there will be more than 20 people at each viewing.

"And you can't establish a community around you because you are always moving, always packing and unpacking boxes and boxes filled with your life.

"It's incredibly fatiguing, stressful and humiliating - it just wears you down."

Throughout it all, Ms Blacher has managed to complete her Masters in Documentary Film at VCA, Melbourne University, and her daughter, now 18, has just been accepted into RMIT to study fashion design.

Last month the pair moved into a friend's house - their fourth move in Castlemaine over the past five years. It is comfortable and feels good.

Does she think it will be long term?

"Who knows?" she said. "Anything could happen."

A community forum will be held at Castlemaine Town Hall tomorrow night to address the town's affordable housing crisis and map out ways to give more people access to a safe, secure, sustainable and affordable home.

The My Home Forum, organised by the My Home Network, will be held - COVID-19 depending - at the hall from 7pm-9pm on Wednesday March 3.

My Home Network spokesperson Carolyn Neilson said Mount Alexander Shire's housing affordability crisis "was not going away".

"Housing is a basic human right," Ms Neilson said. "But with soaring property and rental prices, it is getting harder and harder for people to find somewhere suitable and that they can afford.

"Many are having to move out of Castlemaine, away from family members, their community and other important social supports."

Michael McMahon from Castlemaine Housing at CHIRP Community Health said there were 12 people sleeping rough and hundreds more without secure housing in the shire.

"We need 775 social housing units yet only have 186 available," he said.

Ms Neilson said they knew that the situation was a complex one, with many factors and players involved.

"Here in Mount Alexander Shire, we have the expertise, the innovative thinkers, there is land, as well as the good will and political leadership required to come up with some really innovative and workable solutions to our shire's housing crisis," she said.

"We just need everyone in the conversation - real estate agents, developers, council, homeowners, banks, landowners, renters, lived experience of housing crisis and homelessness, housing organisations, community groups - so we can harness everyone's expertise, experience and knowledge."

Ms Neilson said the child-friendly event would give people the opportunity to hear lived experience of Castlemaine's housing crisis; updates from Mount Alexander Sustainability Group on its social housing retrofitting project; an address from the Commissioner for Residential Tenancies; Castlemaine District Community Health; and Mount Alexander Shire Accommodation and Respite Group on their respective housing projects.

Spokespeople from Mount Alexander Shire Council, Mount Alexander Community Land Ltd, among others, will also be speaking.

This will be followed by a community conversation according to emerging themes and actions.

The My Home Network, established in late 2019, is made up of passionate community members, locals with lived experience of the housing crisis, and representatives from local housing initiatives, community organisations and local and state governments. Mount service not to proceed

Due to COVID-19 physical distance requirements for public events, the 2021 Mount Macedon ANZAC Day Dawn Service is not able to take place. However, to honour community contributions to the 'normal' service, the organising committee is providing a locally inspired and produced virtual service that will be available for all to take part in.

"The dawn service committee has reluctantly taken the decision not to proceed with the 2021 service," chair Bruce Mildenhall said.

"The narrow walkway viewing area at Mount Macedon does not allow people to physically distance and contact tracing data is very difficult to collect with the various access points to the site.

"And with the still unpredictable COVID situation in April, the health and safety of the public, especially our veterans, is the committee's highest priority."

A dawn service video production will be available featuring the traditional elements of the service and local 'Voices from the Front' will again be heard, along with other stories of service from the regional community.

The committee will be promoting the weblink and social media for viewing in the coming weeks.

The committee expects 2022 will see the return of the popular public event as restrictions are gradually eased over the coming year.

Support Birthing at Castlemaine Health and the Theatre Royal are hosting a special event to celebrate the inspiring power of the community's commitment to better birthing choices.

The Theatre Royal will be holding a documentary screening of Birth Time next Wednesday March 10 at 7.30pm to celebrate the impending reopening of the local birthing service at Castlemaine Health.

In May 2020 - without warning - birthing services at Castlemaine Health were abruptly suspended. Instantly, the local community mobilised and joined forces to demand the return of services for local women and families.

After a long period of review and rebuilding, Castlemaine Health is planning to provide a new collaborative model of maternity care where women will have a primary midwife who will care for them throughout their pregnancy, birth and early parenting.

SBACH supporters say it is time to come together to celebrate this collective effort, and to consolidate the ongoing commitment to developing the best possible birthing services for the women and families of the region.

The event will include introductory speeches and acknowledgements,

followed by a screening of the muchanticipated documentary, Birth Time, an Australian film exposing what it will take for all women to emerge from their birthing experiences physically well and emotionally safe, and featuring Birthing on Country projects on Arrernte country, Northern Territory, and in the Yuin Nations, New South Wales. Please be aware that this film may be triggering for some people.

All midwives and GP/Obs are invited to attend Birth Time as SBACH guests, with the community's deepest respect and gratitude for their work, past, present and future.

A Sex Smart Youth survey goes live this month to find out the ins and outs of young people's sexual and reproductive health knowledge and their access to safe and inclusive information and services in the Macedon Ranges.

The survey aims to bring together young people and services working with young people to improve access to relevant, legitimate, inclusive and safe sexual and reproductive health education and resources for young people in the shire.

A working group made up of youth participants and local community, health and education organisations has created the Sex Smart Youth survey to gather and collate localised data regarding the sexual and reproductive health of young people.

The information gathered from the survey will be used for project planning, funding applications and to support young people to develop their skills and capacity in projects related to sexual and reproductive health.

Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health has partnered with Macedon Ranges Shire Council, Woodend Neighbourhood House, Kyneton Community House, Macedon Ranges Health, Thorne Harbour Country, Women's Health Loddon Mallee and local schools to deliver the survey. In addition, the group benefits from the active participation and experience of two paid young people.

The online survey will be available through social media and the participating organisations' websites and the aim is to get as many young people as possible who either live, work, study or play in the Macedon Ranges to participate. Rhani Dean-Talbett, working group chair and WayOut worker at Sunbury and Cobaw Community Health, said the group wanted to hear directly from young people on what they knew, didn't know, wished they known earlier, or wanted

Romsey is a step closer to having a bus bay and bus shelter installed at the corner of Main Street and Reynolds Grove.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council has nominated the project for a federal government Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Extension Grant and, if successful, is expected to be constructed

by December.

Councillor Geoff Neil pushed for the project in December to provide weather protection for more than 30 students accessing bus services where there is currently no infrastructure for this use.

The project would include a hard stand area for bus parking and drop off, footpath connection and kerb and channel.

Since December, Gisborne Secondary College also lodged a request for council to consider implementation of a bus shelter at the same Romsey location.

Gisborne Secondary College advised that at least 34 students use this stop on a regular basis. Corresponding bus service, Sunbury Coaches, also expressed their support for this request.

The project is expected to cost $105,000, with about $75,000 in funding being sought for federal funding.

The remaining $30,000 would be sought from the existing 2020/2021 capital works program, as part of the midyear budget review process.

In December, councillors also called for an audit of shire-wide school bus stops, which is still underway.

A Kyneton woman with almost a century of life experience under her belt is about to launch an art exhibition celebrating the world around her.

Yvette Marie Isabelle Liebergreen, nee Tottenham-Smith, was born in 1922 to an English father who had married a French woman he met in France during his service in the Great War. After the war, due to her father's role as a diplomat, Yvette lived with her French grandparents in Rouen, Normandy for her young years, and then in various English boarding schools during World War II. Yvette's passport says she was born at Valpariso in Chile, on the grounds of the British Consulate, where her father was the ConsulGeneral, and she remembers fondly a pet Ostrich who swallowed their cutlery and chased her and her brother Norman around the grounds, beginning her life-long love affair with animals!

Yvette has a long line of artistic talent in her family, a French architect grandparent, and a great grandfather engineer/inventor, and her multicultural and international life gave her an appreciation for people and situations, encouraging her to immigrate to South Africa, where she met her Danish husband-to-be, Christian Liebergreen.

Their three daughters were born there, and they then moved to New Zealand for many years, and finally to Australia in the 1990s.

During these years, being an artistically talented person, Yvette painted in oils as a side hobby of life around her - portraits of her family, people and landscapes in her impressionistic and vibrant style.

In her latter years, living with her daughters and son-in-laws in Kyneton and regional areas, she experienced a resurgence of interest in drawing again, and this exhibition at The Old Auction House, Kyneton - It's Never Too Late - reflects this and her optimistic sunny spirit, all done during her 98th year, opening at 6.30pm on March 11, the actual date of her 99th birthday!

She has this time focused on a new media, pastel and charcoal, and the topics are essentially again, the world around her.

Her daughter Simone, an architect and drawing professional, observes that "in just a couple of Mum's crooked lines, there is a world of liveliness and life that defies all the rules of perfect art!"

Yvette wants to encourage everyone, no matter what age, to have faith and just keep going.

"You don't know what wonderful things are around the corner!" she says.

Economic development plans open

Macedon Ranges businesses are urged to contribute ideas to Macedon Ranges Council's draft Economic Development Strategy to shape the region for the next 10 years.

Council's director of planning and environment Angela Hughes said the strategy would include a vision for job creation, education and training, economic development, and COVID-19 recovery.

"We know many residents who leave the Macedon Ranges to work, train or learn each day would rather do that closer to home," Ms Hughes said.

"Community feedback and suggestions on the draft 2021-2031 Economic Development Strategy will help the council identify challenges and opportunities for our business community and those seeking education and training. It will also canvas activities to create sustainable competitive advantages.

"Community insights will also help identify barriers, competition and emerging technologies that can be addressed to strengthen these advantage."

Consultation is open now until 5pm March 26, and is an opportunity to influence what is included in the draft strategy.

Traditional Owner groups within the Macedon Ranges may soon begin receiving written notification of place naming in the shire to allow greater opportunity for their feedback.

Last week, Councillor Janet Pearce pushed for Macedon Ranges Council to consider changing its current place naming process in a bid to be more inclusive.

Cr Pearce said it was an opportunity to "ensure that all future considerations of place naming by the council give consideration to the rich cultural heritage of the shire". The move received unanimous support at the council's ordinary meeting last Wednesday.

Acting CEO John Nevins will write to the shire's three Traditional Owner groups to advise of the potential changes and invite feedback to the council on their interest and capacity to participate.

A Diggers Rest man has had his licence suspended after he was detected speeding on the Calder Freeway last Wednesday.

Macedon Ranges Highway Patrol officers detected the grey Holden sedan travelling at 141km/h in a 110km/h section of the freeway at Diggers Rest.

They intercepted the car and the driver undertook subsequent testing that revealed an alleged breath alcohol concentration of 0.150.

An oral fluid test was also conducted and indicated the presence of cannabis.

The 35-year-old man had his licence immediately suspended for 12 months.

"Police are disappointed at the level of risk taking, putting other road users in danger," Sergeant Mark Stephenson said.

"This behaviour won't be tolerated, we will continue to use all tools in the toolkit to remove dangerous drivers from the roads."

From the time it was established in 1880, the Castlemaine Pioneers and Old Residents Association has been collecting, preserving, protecting and promoting the region's historic memorabilia. But with a history as rich and as long as Castlemaine's, operating a historical society comes with challenges.

The Pioneers recognised their policies and procedures were not documented, which made it difficult for their small group of committed and passionate volunteers to know what to do at any time, and in any situation. It became increasingly clear that too often folk were reinventing the wheel because the operational systems were far too open to interpretation.

"If we wanted to remain relevant for another 140 years we needed to document who we are, what we do, why we do it, and how," secretary Wilson Bunton said.

"We needed to make sure the information in people's heads wasn't lost when people go. We also needed to clearly outline the steps we take to provide an extraordinary level of historical accuracy about Castlemaine."

Fortunately, the Pioneers were introduced to Cass Ewing from Circleworks - a local business that helps clubs, trusts and associations to implement more efficient operational systems.

"In 2020, with funding from the Mount Alexander Shire Council Community Grants program, I was engaged by the Castlemaine Pioneers to prepare an operations manual for their organisation," Cass said.

"Over several months I consulted with the executive committee to distil all the information in their heads - and other assorted locations - and compile it in one document for future reference.

Lisa Dennis Renowned local gardener and Castlemaine District Garden Club life member Peggy Munro has been awarded a gold medal by the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria for services to gardening in the local region.

RHSV president and secretary Don and Jennifer Rickerby visited Castlemaine last Tuesday evening to surprise the longtime local garden club member with the presentation of the RHSV's highly coveted 'John Pascoe Fawkner Award'.

Mr Rickerby said Ms Munro was nominated for the honour by her peers, fellow club members and friends making the acknowledgement even more special.

"Groups make a recommendation to the RHSV for award nominees and in this case we wholeheartedly agreed that Peggy was extremely deserving and awarded her the highest of our three award honours - the gold medal," he said.

Ms Munro joined the local club in February 1990 and was awarded life membership in November 2010 for her outstanding services to the club and horticulture in central Victoria.

The dedicated local member has held the positions of club president, secretary and committee member and also been responsible for contributing to the club's newsletter and more recently Facebook page. She has also contributed to the club by opening her home and garden for potting up plants, making posies, holding meetings, storing pea straw and potting mix.

Her horticultural activities include showing work, exhibiting, lecturing and judging.

Ms Munro is also a founding member of the highly regarded biennial Castlemaine Festival of Gardens and HEDGE (Horticultural Endeavours Demonstrating Gardening Enthusiasm). The HEDGE open garden event runs in alternate years

Ms Munro said she was shocked but delighted by the honour.

"It's amazing. It is really wonderful to be acknowledged by my peers," she said.

Alyce said, once people have mastered the staple Bolognese sauce, they can feel confident in creating dishes like lasagne and Sheppard's pie.

Alyce is the best-selling author of nine cookbooks for slow cookers and thermo cookers. She has her own range of kitchen accessories and runs her own cooking school. Modern Slow Cooker was released for sale today.

FIRST 1. Heat oil in a large frypan over medium heat. Once hot, add onion and sauté for 5-10 minutes or until soft. Add garlic and continue cooking for a couple of minutes. Transfer to slow cooker.

2. In this order, add carrot, celery, eggplant, mushrooms, olives, tomatoes, miso paste, maple syrup, stock cubes or stock powder, paprika and passata to slow cooker. Cover and cook for 4 hours on high or 8 hours on low.

4 OR 8 HOURS LATER 3. Add grated potato, fold through, incorporating well. Cover and cook for a further 30 minutes on high. And your bolognese is ready to serve! My favourite option is to ladle the sauce over penne or rigatoni and garnish with a sprinkling of cheese and fresh greens.

This sauce is also great as a shepherd's pie base, a pie filling, pasta bake sauce, served over creamy polenta, stuffed in capsicums or inside a jacket potato.

For many, the coronavirus pandemic has been the impetus for seeking out a slower, calmer and more sustainable lifestyle.

It's a lifestyle that foodie Alyce Alexandra has long supported and lives out at her Mount Macedon property.

Passionate about the avenue of food from seedling to stomach, it is her mission to get more people cooking from scratch to discover its many rewards.

"The pandemic has certainly reminded people that we can't always rely on supermarkets - they don't make food appear.

People are gardening a lot more now and want to find new ways to prepare their produce," Alyce said.

"There has also been a big change in how people think about their everyday living and a push to become more sustainable to help ourselves and the planet."

Part of that approach, Alyce says, has been increased interest in vegetarian and vegan recipes, which star in her latest book Modern Slow Cooker that redefines the slow cooker for a modern kitchen.

"When I first started, desire for vegetarian and vegan recipes came from a small part of my audience but now more and more people are interested in this way of eating - whether that's to reduce their meat intake, or environmental and ethical reasons. They are thrilled that I have such a big collection of recipes," she said.

Alyce said the slow cooker presented a calmer way of cooking.

"There's no time pressure at the end of the end of the day when it's time to eat and it's been a busy day. Life is sometimes complicated so if we can use appliances to make our lives easier why wouldn't we?" she said.

"So often people think of slow cookers and think of recipes like soups and curries but there's so much more that you can do. I really do think I've redefined the slow cooker and aligned it with how we cook and eat today."

For beginners, Alyce recommends trying her Thick and Saucy Vegetable Bolognese.

"It's a good place to start because most people are pretty familiar with Bolognese. In this recipe the vegetables give the same texture and flavour to the traditional sauce but it is made with veggies," she said.

"It has a rich and intense flavour that most people will enjoy."

There truly is nothing else quite like dark red plums at this time of the year. Their dark crimson colour alone is so intense but when they are ripe they are full of flavour. We have several old trees at home that every year are abundant with plums.

Unfortunately, once they are picked they don’t last long out of the fridge, and storing them in the cold tends to diminish their rich flavour a little.

So what do you do with all of your plums?

I have included a couple of my favourite recipes below, but I have to say the Spiced Blood Plum Cake is an absolute winner.

Making the most of the summer bounty from the garden, and working out ways to store, preserve and lengthen the flavours of summer throughout the cooler months ahead is something I try to do every year. Storing tomatoes, freezing

zucchini soups and relishes, preserving plums and making enough jam to sink a battleship.

One of my favourite cakes to bake when the plums are straight from the tree is this Spiced Blood Plum Cake. It combines the sweetness of stone fruit with the deep spices of cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg and can be served warm or cold depending on your ability for self-control after it comes out of the oven.

Recipes Spiced Blood Plum Cake Ingredients 125 gm butter 1 cup of caster sugar 1 large egg 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 1 ½ cups of plain flour 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon of salt 1 teaspoon of cinnamon ½ teaspoon of nutmeg ½ teaspoon of cardamom powder ½ cup of milk 10 plums 1 tablespoon of brown sugar Method 1. Line a 20 cm spring form tin with baking paper 2. Preheat oven to 170 degrees 3. In a standing mixer or bowl with an electric mixer beat the butter and sugar until light and creamed. Add the egg and vanilla and reduce the speed of the mixer until the egg and vanilla are well combined with the butter and sugar.

4. With the mixer on medium, add half the flour mixture (baking powder, salt and spices), then the milk and the remaining flour etc and mix until you have a smooth batter.

5. Pour batter into the prepared tin and then place halved plums cut side down around the cake pressing them in gently to the batter.

6. Sprinkle brown sugar over the plums and bake for 30-40 minutes or until the top is golden and the middle is firm.

7. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before removing the tin.

Dark Plum Chutney 60g butter or 60ml olive oil 2 cloves of garlic crushed 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground cardamom 2 teaspoons yellow mustard seeds 2 medium onions (300g) sliced 1kg plums pitted and chopped (roughly) 2 large apples (400g) peeled and chopped 400g firmly packed brown sugar 250 ml dry red wine 500ml white vinegar 1. Heat butter/oil in large saucepan, add garlic and ginger and cook for one minute. Stir in spices, seeds and onion and saute until the onion is soft. Stir in remaining ingredients. Stir over heat without boiling until the sugar is dissolved.

2. Bring to the boil, drop the heat and simmer uncovered stirring occasionally for about 1-1.5 hours or until the chutney is thick. Pour into hot sterilised jars and seal when cold.

As a local business owner for over seven years and a resident for 27, I feel compelled to voice my opinion on the Edgecombe Road development.

Unfortunately, a small but noisy minority wish to let a fantastic opportunity pass us by.

Admittedly I am no fan of McDonalds, but I guess we need to take the good with the bad.

I believe the Edgecombe Road site is the perfect location for this development with its proximity to the freeway and I've always felt the northern end of town lacked access to fuel and amenities given the rapidly growing industrial area.

Kyneton has in the past always supported at least two hardware stores, with the closure of Turner Brothers, people have been left with few options. The shire is more than capable of supporting two hardware stores; this will also create competition and ultimately result in better pricing for everybody.

People are foolish if they believe they can move to a small town under an hour from Melbourne and not expect some form of development given the large amount of vacant land around the area.

With a growing population, development like this is inevitable.

People who come to Kyneton for its cafes and eateries won't travel here to eat McDonalds; they're still going to eat in Piper Street.

This service centre will primarily service freeway traffic that would not be stopping in Kyneton anyway and will also service people who travel up from the city on a long weekend to camp and play along the Murray River and no local is going to give up their favourite café to eat at McDonalds!

And cultural heritage? You never had an issue when that same land was holding paddocks for the abattoirs, livestock urinating and defecating for years!

And to all the people who believe McDonalds takes advantage of young kids and pays poor wages, I know some people who are only where they are today because they started working at McDonalds, some of those kids are now CEOs.

So not progressive!

I have submitted my objection to council along with the ever-increasing numbers of unhappy ratepayers and members of our community who are feeling quite depleted - indeed shocked - about the planning application seeking to develop land in order to introduce McDonalds, Bunnings and a fourth petrol station with another adjoining yet-to-be-named fast-food drive-through here in Kyneton.

I have also read the many letters to the editor, most of which are anti-development, as well as the odd letter supporting this proposal. Overall, I am left quite disheartened about the proposal. t is quite ironic when we are accused of being luddite and anti-progressive, when, in fact, one could easily say that Maccas is anything but progressive. How does this multinational fast-food company capture a vision of contemporary thinking?

Kyneton prides itself as a country town that champions independent, innovative and creative producers. Fast food is thankfully not high on our agenda. Since embracing the world of COVID we have been wrestling with a world that demands us to be both flexible and innovative with our work commitments. In other words, focusing on a more wholistic approach to life/work matters. Saying no to this development is, in fact, more progressive. Our town is unique! It does not need to be a lost town, a town that merges without distinction into the concrete-and-bitumen urban landscape of every other town and city.

The community does not want to damage the unique and historic quality of the town. It is this aesthetic that makes our town different to other towns. We value our old buildings! Despite McDonalds finally deciding to rethink its antiquated business plan due to falling sales - surely the best option is to say no thanks! Not for our town.

Kept in the dark Peter Henderson, Kyneton The Kyneton community is still waiting for information regarding the proposal for the former Kyneton Primary School site. It has now been nine months since the end of the Expression of Interest process, and three years since the Kyneton Primary School left the site.

The community has still not heard what is happening at the site. The three local community groups who submitted unsuccessfully to the EIO process were told they had to have full financial and operational plans in their EOI submissions, so how is it the state government can now miraculously find $12 million for the (unknown) successful bidder? Unfortunately the three local community groups were not offered this $12M in the EOI process or even asked to reapply with the $12 million included in their plans, what a missed opportunity for everyone to get involved via their local community organisation.

I feel the community has been very patient in this whole process, but enough is enough, and we must know what is planned for the site, and how the $12 million will be spent.

Will the successful bidder guarantee that the cream brick building will not be demolished, and will they also guarantee that parts of the site will not be turned into a giant carpark.

The local community deserves to know what is happening to this iconic site in the centre of Kyneton.

I have lived in Castlemaine for eight years, and every single year I hear that a new supermarket is opening. Why is it taking so long? We are so desperate for it.

With the amount of people moving here, the infrastructure of the town as it is simply cannot sustain us. Our real estate is so exorbitantly priced, we pay high rates, and yet to do a decent shop, we have to travel out of town, as it is simply too expensive to grocery shop here. And think of all the new jobs it will create!

I don't know anyone who doesn't want this!

Please Castlemaine, get with the times.

Let's do this Grace McCaughey, Newstead Further to my open letter to developers and councils on February 2, and in response to Julian Perez of Villawood Developments of February 16, I did research his website and I listened to to the CEO Rory Costelloe in the Sustainable Living Festival YouTube video with Brendan O'Connor from The Cape, Arden Homes and a speaker on home water saving and recycling.

It is pleasing to know that a small number of larger developers like you three are in fact doing a few great things on sustainable housing up to eight-star rated and even 10 stars. The list of sustainable products and materials using recycled components was useful.

However, most homes are far too large and far too expensive. With so many single people, particularly older women, requiring

to either downsize, or to just find an affordable home, there is a crying out need for more diverse types, like low maintenance 60 - 80 square metre homes on 300 square metres or less. Perhaps some with shared laundries, gardens etc. And I do know that sharing is not for everyone, especially those so very individualist Australians.

As Brendan from The Cape says "It is not difficult to build these sustainable homes, just a matter of knowing how".

So the big question remains: What about affordable, sustainable housing?

It would be a good move for councils to adopt a form of Inclusionary Zoning where between 10 and 20 per cent of blocks on any larger development must be made available to local providers for affordable social and community homes for lowincome earners.

According to ahuri.edu.au inclusionary zoning has been implemented in various states and in 2019, https://chiavic.com.au/ mandatory-inclusionary-zoning supported such a proposal.

However progressive councils do not need to wait to be told they must include inclusionary zoning, they can adopt the idea tomorrow if they have the will.

Planning sustainable eight to 10-star rated housing developments that take into account local environments, can provide homes that pay only $500 a year on energy, or none at all and can contribute to the move towards local circular economies.

Height of folly?

Chris Milne, Kyneton In disputing my suggestion that a McDonalds pylon sign may well be visible from both primary school gates simply by looking down Edgecombe Street, A Kennedy questions my estimates of elevation ('Kyneton change already happening', Opinions, February 23).

He has used his GPS, most of which have been scientifically proven, when estimating elevation, to have a margin of error of plus or minus 20 metres. I have used the official, detailed, MRSC contour map.

Hands off our CEFC Trevor Scott, Castlemaine It's no secret that Australia is resource rich, and has ditched its base manufacturing industry in favour of expanding the export of these resources. Scott Morrison likes to remind us that Australian emissions are decreasing but he conveniently forgets to include those from our considerable, exported fossil fuels in the form of coal and gas. When these are added to the equation, Australia is one of the highest per capita carbon emitters in the world.

Although Angus Taylor claims to be the Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, it is a fact that, during the Coalition's time in government, carbon emissions have continued to rise. Now, when we desperately need to reduce these emissions, instead of supporting renewable power, Barnaby Joyce, former leader of the Nationals, wants to amend the legislation defining the CEFC (Clean Energy Finance Corporation) and allow its funding to include "high intensity, low emissions, coal-fired power".

The CEFC is by definition, a government-owned fund that was established to facilitate increased flows of finance into the clean energy sector.

"Low emissions, coal-fired power" sounds as mythical as the piece of "clean coal" that was brandished in the parliament, not so long ago by our PM. Scott Morrison, your hands look clean but you can't hide the dirty idea behind this amendment. We need to object in no uncertain terms to our government's rort of our taxpayer funds for this purpose.

Wow, what a year it has been in business for these girls! Like so many other local businesses, COVID has made their 13th year of running Mensland the most notable to date. Of no benefit Colin and Wendy Peterson, Elphinstone Well done Castlemaine councillors for throwing your policies for looking after local ratepayers and businesses out of the window by giving a permit to young men from Melbourne to hold a backyard festival in Elphinstone.

You overruled your own planning department who recommended that you issue a Notice of Refusal to grant a permit, after listening to the objections of Elphinstone residents.

All equipment etc. and also food vans, BYO alcohol will all be brought here from Melbourne so this festival has no economical benefits for the shire.

We moved here 37 years ago for a peaceful and quiet lifestyle, our home is approximately 800 metres from the venue for this festival, there are other homes in a closer proximity to the venue than us, some with young children.

Two large generators, live performances, DJs and 1500 people mainly from Melbourne all contribute to noise pollution.

In regards to traffic along the BendigoSutton Grange Road, it is at its busiest from Friday to Sunday and could be hazardous with approximately 500 cars arriving and leaving the festival.

Also there is concern for people travelling along the Calder Freeway at nighttime with flashing lights and noise drawing their attention away from the road.

Other concerns are the possibility of drug usage and used needles, possibility of fire starting from dropped cigarette butts etc., which could spread rapidly in dry conditions putting lives and homes in danger, rubbish left on roadside.

If the applicant wanted to have a venue to hold this festival in close proximity to your homes councillors, would you have granted a permit?

Please do the right thing and overturn your decision and let's work together for the good of the shire and local businesses.

A really bad idea Denise Bridges, McIntyre Wildlife Shelter I am writing regarding Mount Alexander Shire Council's recent decision to grant a permit to allow a musical festival to be held near the Red Box Wildlife Shelter at Elphinstone.

I have been involved in wildlife rescue and care for more than 20 years. Since 2006, my Loddon Shire property has been a registered wildlife shelter under permit to DELWP, Victoria.

On New Year's Eve 2015, a nearby property owner allowed hundreds of people to camp on his McIntyre property, which is within one kilometre of my wildlife shelter, to attend a rave party.

Music began in earnest around 8pm and the non-stop doof doof beats continued until approximately 8am on New Years Day 2016.

Residents 10 kilometres away repeatedly called 000 but police could do little to nothing due to insufficient officers on duty.

Wildlife living in the vicinity fled the area early in the evening to escape the noise and influx of cars and people. The loud beat of the music caused strong vibrations around the area adding further terror to the wildlife inhabitants.

All of my wildlife in care were terrified.

Birds were thrashing about in their aviaries and most tragic of all was the absolute terror the macropods endured for endless hours. Kangaroos and wallabies flee when

they are in perceived danger. This just is not possible when they are being raised in care to adulthood or recovering in care from sickness or injury.

When trapped, they bound about full force as they are a flight animal and will try to escape.

They smashed into fencing, causing varying injuries to their bodies and limbs. Nothing could be done to allay their fear as my live-in volunteers and myself watched helplessly as flesh tore from their bodies as they hit fencing and others collapsed from overheating and concussion.

I ended up releasing five adults that had been undergoing rehabilitation after fence entanglement accidents. They were not 100 per cent healed but I feared they would've killed themselves had I not freed them.

It is so unfair to not take local fauna into account when considering any festivals.

What kind of change?

Mary Hogarth, Kyneton The massive developments proposed for Edgecombe Road Kyneton fly in the face of local plans not limited to: the Kyneton Structure Plan, Council Plan, Visitor Economy Strategy, and Environmental Strategy.

Participating in consultations for strategic plans over many years, I've listened to the concerns, ideas and aspirations put forward by locals. I don't recall anyone aspiring to have these fast food giants (2), a Bunnings or another service station. Yet we're at risk of these being imposed by multinationals, with profits going out of town and off-shore. There are few net-result employment opportunities once examined, and these greedy corporations care only for the health of their bottom line.

What else will be incorporated in the 160-acre development? Will Woolworths relocate - it's store has always been too small for its offerings and with inadequate storage and delivery area? What precedent is being set and what does it mean for the town centre?

The COVID-19 lockdowns over the past year taught us the importance of looking after communities and supporting small businesses. These developments are going the wrong way.

We have a diverse community with mixed views. People should be able to express themselves without being subjected to the vitriol from some who are in favour of the developments. Those opposing, new and long-term locals, welcome change but not change that leaves the town with empty shops and at the mercy of unscrupulous corporations.

Research by Deakin University found fast food giants, including McDonalds and KFC, commonly locate closer to areas of greater disadvantage as well as schools, making them easier to access, which 'may serve to shift norms towards unhealthy choices amongst vulnerable populations'.

There is little to entice well-informed locals to welcome this development, which falls outside the documented vision for our town. The health and wellbeing of our town and region are paramount.

Kicking off on Saturday March 6 from 9am at James Park, the Harcourt Applefest is a celebration of harvest time in the heart of Victoria’s renowned apple country.

After a long and restrictive period people are looking forward to getting out and about and being social again and there’s no better time to do that than over the long weekend crammed full of Harcourt Applefest events.

Applefest 2021 celebrations have been designed to re-invigorate the community and lift spirits.

The festival has been arranged to meet strict Covid-safe guidelines.

The long weekend of March 6-8 in Harcourt has a packed program. On Saturday March 6 the Applefest market, children’s entertainment, fruit-grower’s displays, cookery competition, live music and vintage engines will be found in James Park, right in the centre of town and right next door to the renowned annual Art Show in the Heritage Centre ANA Hall.

Importantly, for families, there will be children’s entertainment in James Park plus a display of work by children of Harcourt Valley Primary School inside the Heritage Centre. The fun starts at 9am while the usual Pool Party will be held at Harcourt Swimming Pool from 4pm-6pm.

On Sunday March 7 drop in for a look at the Art Show on your way to the Music, Wine and Pizza Applefest Day Out at Killiecrankie Vineyard. Killiecrankie sources 90 per cent of its grapes from the Harcourt Valley and so enjoys the riches of life in this vibrant and fertile disctict.

Harcourt’s big weekend winds up on Monday March 8 with a 10am start at the Danns Road Harcourt Organic Farming Cooperative. This tour has been specially designed for people, young or older, thinking of starting out in micro-farming. Of course, the Art Show will still be open. This Art Show has a special place in the regional arts calendar and is well worth a visit.

A one-off event during the Applefest is Indigenous Stargazing. Take your own picnic rug to Harcourt Recreation Reserve on Saturday March 13 at 8pm to hear stories of long ago and of using the stars as a guide to the changing of the seasons and shifting food sources.

Special music wine and pizza events at Harcourt valley Vineyard on Sunday 21 and 28 will wind up the month-long festival, the 30th Harcourt Applefest.

Taking to the roads for holidays Accounting for 44 per cent of all holiday nights across Australia, the latest insights from Tourism Research Australia for the September 2020 quarter again shows that caravan and camping is the most popular holiday accommodation type for Australians as they come to terms with the COVID travel environment.

The insights revealed that over 1.9 million caravan and camping holidays were undertaken by Australians nationally, creating 8.4 million nights for the September quarter 2020 alone.

Stuart Lamont, CEO of Caravan Industry Association of Australia, said the latest

data from TRA reaffirmed the important role caravan and camping had in driving the economic recovery of the visitor economy.

“We live in a world of fragile consumer confidence at present creating a twospeed economy,” Mr Lamont said.

Cycling forums

There are plenty of cycling enthusiasts in the Macedon Ranges and Mount Alexander shires.

Now Mitchell Shire, which adjoins Macedon Ranges to the north and east, has endorsed a 14-person panel to take part in council's first-ever community cycling consultative forums.

The aim is to understand what bike enthusiasts think of the cycling experience in the area.

Council wants to get a handle on how cycling can be boosted for both casual and seasoned riders throughout the community whether people are riding on-road, off-road, or launching into jumps.

Basketball

Ranges take out grand final Macedon Ranges- Sunbury over 50's cricket side has defeated Monash to take out the grand final in D Division of the Victorian Veterans Cricket.

After arriving at the Tallyho Reserve in Mt Waverley, skipper, Glenn Mills won the toss and elected to bat .

At the drinks break the Ranges were well placed at 2/75 with Mick Graham retiring on 43 and Steve Grey making 23.

After the break the Ranges continued

to pile on the runs and at the completion of the 35 overs had amassed 4/195 with Rob Kerr retiring on 40 and Glenn Mills a quick fire 36no.

With an inspiring speech from the skipper, the bowlers were at their peak reducing Monash to 4/17 after 8 overs .

Monash fought back through their lower order with numbers eight and nine both retiring at 40 but could only manage 141.

Man of the match was awarded to Rob

Hyatt who dismissed the top three batsmen and finished with 3/6 off five overs.

Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions the games against SA and Tasmania were cancelled.

Baseball headed to the MCG Angela Crawford Malmsbury's hallowed 'MCG' will soon play host to a baseball diamond as the local cricket club branches out to field multiple teams in Bendigo league baseball.

Club president Jenny Ganim said the club was "super excited to be launching something new to the district".

"There are no clubs between Melbourne and Bendigo, so we're the first to launch into something new," she said.

The man behind the idea, coach Jamie Kinkaid, said baseball was a sport that anyone could play and would give cricketers a winter hit with the bat.

"Between cricket and baseball it's a natural fit, the fact that it's a bat and ball sport and it's a throwing sport, they tie in very well," he said.

"It will actually help cricketers learn to pick up and throw and it helps baseballers judge ball movement off a bat as well.

"And any kid can play it - girls and boys some of the best pitchers I've had are girls, they might not be the fastest but they can get the ball to shake and they can actually hit the target more often than a boy trying to throw as hard as possible."

The junior season starts March 27 and the senior season starts April 17. Junior matches are played Sunday morning with senior matches on Sunday afternoon.

Age groups include under 10s, 12s, 14s and 16s, plus a mixed competition and division one and two for seniors.

Registration days will be held at Malmsbury Cricket Ground on the next two Fridays from 5.30pm to 7pm with a free barbecue on offer.

Lights part of new era

This is going to be a fantastic year for Kyneton United Soccer Club, long-serving president Ron Cole predicted on Friday.

He was speaking at the official launch of the new and completed lighting project at Barkly Square, first announced just over three years ago.

There were positive vibes all round as Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas joined with Macedon Ranges Shire Council representatives and soccer club leaders, coaches and young players at the home of soccer in Kyneton.

With a record number of members (around 320), strong and loyal sponsors, and a likely increase in teams to 16 this coming season, Kyneton United (known as Rangers) looks forward to further progress at all levels in the World Game (soccer, also known as football).

"This is a combination of council, the community and state government working together," stated the mayor, Cr Jennifer Anderson.

Both the district MP and Cr Anderson praised Ron Cole for his progressive outlook and strong leadership, making the club all inclusive with senior and junior players, both male and female, being catered for and provided with coaching expertise. The club was also commended for contributing $50,000 towards the project.

Overall cost was over $446,000 with the shire council providing $296,450 and the State Government $100,000 through the Community Sports Infrastructure Fund.

Mr Cole said the lights would enable the club to use the pitches on Barkly Square for extended training and for playing night games; the surface is presently in top order having not been played on for around 18 months (COVID-19 wrecked prospects of a 2020 season).

From humble beginnings in 1974, KUSC has expanded to the stage it is well recognised as one of the leading sporting and community-orientated clubs in the region.

The club is expected to lobby for further improvements at Barkly Square in the future.

Russell Turner is the winner of Kyneton Golf Club's prestigious James Rennick Trophy for the 2020 season.

Covid disruptions meant the event was delayed, with the final round taking place on Saturday.

Turner had another excellent round and finished up with a tally of 203 (three rounds) to edge out Noel Alldis by one shot.

Daily winners: A-grade - David Moore 88-11-73 on a countback from Pete Robbins 80-7-73; B - Adam Smith 82-16-66 from Richard Partridge 83-16-67; C - Mark Russell 91-20-71 from Jing Biscocho 95-22-73.

Ladies: Julie Harris 93-23-73 from Denise Murphy 87-14-73.

Nearest the pins went to Nick Williamson (2), Terry Kot, Keith Rodda, Teoate Davies, Denise Murphy, and Barry Murphy (also super pin).

Wednesday play is back to a 10am shotgun start this week: Last week David Austin (36 handicap) was the stableford winner with 42 points, from Peter Cameron 40. Noel Alldis and Pat Clohesy were NTP. Kyneton ladies went to Trentham on Wednesday for the annual challenge, and the home course knowledge was decisive with an average of 30, against Kyneton's 34.

Tuesday was a stableford day for the ladies, with Michelle Werner (33) the winner with 39 points, from Dot Greenway (35) on 38. Vicki Hardwick (45) took out the ninehole event with 21, from Irene Kocicz and Jan Laidlaw, with Jenny Bailee and Julie Harris NTP. This Saturday is monthly medal day at Kyneton. Note shotgun start at 10am.

Lancefield golf Lancefield Golf Club is gearing up for its big three-day open tournament over the Labor Day weekend.

The tournament begins with a 4BBB this Saturday (any combination); the men's 27-hole event is on Sunday, and there is a two-person Ambrose (any combination) on Monday.

C-grader Andrew Beard, with 44 points, was a runaway winner of the stableford event last Saturday.

Low marker Denis Davenport took out Agrade with 36, and Matt Darby's 37 was best in B-grade.

Singles matchplay: B. Brennan d G. Holland 1up; A. Hall d D. Linehan 2up; G. Brennan d J. Byron 5&4; K. Murchison d G. Dudderidge 6&5.

Central Highlands Bowling Division's Champion of Champions for the current season are Graham Edwards (Kyneton Golf) and Bev Holmes (Lancefield).

They showed their class by taking out the titles at a well-prepared Kyneton green on Sunday.

Edwards, undoubtedly the recruit of the season, came to Kyneton Golf from Bendigo East; he has been a member of the Victorian 'Armed' team and adds the Champions of Champions title to his CHBD singles and pairs (with Glenn Gascoyne) championships.

Holmes, nine times Lancefield champion, and once at Gladstone Park, has been a well credentialed and consistent player for many years, winning numerous other pairs, triples and triples titles.

Now both are hoping to end up a division one premiership side this season.

In the morning semi-final, Edwards

opened up a big lead over Romsey's Matt Brundell, who fought back with nine shots in three ends. Edwards steadied to notch up a 25-20 victory.

His opponent in the final was Lancefield's Gary Choate, who has been a fine and consistent leader with the Tigers for a lengthy period.

Choate, who won his first club final 25-24 against Aaron Andrews, staged a remarkable comeback against Kyneton's Mark Smoljo in the semi-final.

Smoljo led 16-6 on his own green, but Choate is always competitive, and advanced to the final with a 25-23 scoreline in a thrilling finish.

In the men's final, Edwards struck top form, consistently drawing close to the jack, and playing quality bowls that would be too much for many opponents at a higher level.

He won 25-11.

The women's semi-finals were decided by reasonable margins; Holmes accounted for Kyneton's Chris Plowman 25-14, and

Romsey record Romsey Bowling Club will play in its firstever top division bowls final on Saturday.

Club coach Garry Templar said this season has been a great achievement for the club, with all five Redbacks' teams making the semi-finals.

He commended players for their dedication and overall improvement.

Templar said the division one side is now settled, and looking forward to Saturday's semi-final against Kyneton Golf.

"We have shown we can match it with the other finals sides, beating Lancefield recently, and just missing out in tight finishes against Kyneton Golf and Kyneton."

Cricketers eye finals in CDCA

The Castlemaine District Cricket Association Women's sides contested their final round of competition last Friday evening.

Senior sides contested the final round of their home and away matches and C Grade cricketers commenced the finals with semi final bouts. The highlight was Barkers Creek A Grade cricketer Darby Semmens' 102 run effort against Guildford. Guildford bowler Michael Skinner was the pick of the bowlers claiming 6-6 in B Grade against rivals Newstead.

There was a thrilling finish at Gardiner Reserve on Saturday, with Gisborne defeating Romsey in a key McIntyre Cup match with just three balls to spare.

The two certain semi-finalists can both take positives out of this match, where 424 runs were scored while 11 wickets fell.

Romsey compiled a healthy 6/211 c.c. Matt Milne 61, Ben Way 45, Jake Thorsen 37 not out, Will Collins 33 - Josh McDonald 3-41) before Gisborne replied with 5/213 (Patrick McKenna 60 n.o., Jason Wilson 57, Mick Allen 54).

The marginal difference between the two sides may have been Gisborne batsmen hit 24 boundaries, and Romsey just 13.

Can Malmsbury beat Gisborne?

It's simple. All Malmsbury's division one cricket side has to do on Saturday to make the finals is win at Gisborne.

A percentage deficit means nothing as third and fourth sides in Woodend and Hanging Rock also play in the last round, and the loser goes out if the Malmsbury lads win.

They kept their hopes alive by demolishing Rupertswood at the MCG on Saturday.

The visiting batsmen had no answers, being bundled out for a meagre 73 in the 30th over.

Six bowlers shared the wickets, with Ryder Blizzard 3-18, Matt Cox 2-8 and Palmy Singh the most successful.

Chasing 74 for victory, Malmsbury's batting order was juggled, and despite losing wickets the result was never in doubt with Palmy Sing scoring 43 in a total of 6/75.

Malmsbury's second side lost any chance of a finals appearance by going down to Gisborne White.

The top order failed apart from Rilke Podolinsky, before Justin Murphy 53 and Paul de Polinsky 53 ret. hurt carried Malmsbury to 6/175 c.c.

Gisborne batsmen relished the challenge, and won with three overs to spare despite Malmsbury's attack toiling hard.

Opener Jackson Kerr's 85 made the difference.

This Saturday the north grade side is at home to Gisborne Red in the final home and away round.
