BUSINESS/EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP ADVISORY COUNCIL

“A Partnership Today….A Better Future Tomorrow”. The Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce’s Business & Education Partnership Program plays a key role in strengthening the ties between Business and Education in Middlesex County, and always welcome businesses to become members of the partnership. Business & Education Partnership Advisory Council The Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce’s Business & Education Partnership Advisory Council continues to serve as a link between member businesses and educational leaders from Middlesex County Schools. Their Mission is to facilitate and encourage the development of mutually supportive partnerships between schools and businesses, for the purpose of enriching the educational process for our students, by providing services and opportunities, that assist our schools in preparing them for their future as responsible and productive citizens for our global economy.

Annual High School Career Fair Expo The Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce’s Business & Education Partnership Advisory Council in partnership with Middlesex County's Schools and Wesleyan University’s Jewett Center for Community Partnerships, annually presents a Career Fair Expo for Middlesex County High School students. The aim of the Career Fair Expo is to introduce students to an awareness of the many career options available to them, an exploration of what happens after school graduation, an opportunity to motivate them into better achievement goals and attendance in school, resulting in improved preparation for their future in the “real world of employment”. Business and Career Professionals from all over Connecticut come to meet with over 1300 students from Middlesex County and surrounding area high schools, to present and share their career experiences, giving the students an excellent opportunity to explore potential careers, so that they may better plan their future educational goals. THE MEWS+ The Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce recently opened the Middlesex Entrepreneurs Work Space (MEWS+) in Middletown, CT. The co-working initiative is designed for startups, small businesses, entrepreneurs, freelancers, and the Wesleyan University community. The focus is to create a space for entrepreneurs to collaborate and turn ideas into businesses; encourage communication between public, private, and institutional organizations; and develop an innovative partnership of entrepreneurs and professional resources to bolster economic growth in Middletown. The “+” is for all of the related innovation content which we hope will draw in all types of local entrepreneurs and businesses. The MEWS+ is more than the space. We host meetups and networking events and invite speakers—local entrepreneurs, Wesleyan professors and alums, and others with success stories to share. We also host office hours at the space that connect our members to key resources such as business counselors, attorneys, accountants, marketing experts, and more. The long-term goal is to create a local innovation ecosystem in Middlesex County that will fuel economic growth and complement our other economic strengths: manufacturing, tourism, financial services and healthcare. In addition to the informal networking available through the MEWS+ partnership, the Professional Office Hours Program is of great benefit to the entrepreneur community. From professional business counselors, to marketing experts, to accountants, attorneys, and more, these seasoned professionals are here to offer pro-bono services to students and entrepreneurs alike. We have launched an accelerator program for startups who need help with business plans, access to financing and other resources, executed a series of virtual pitch competitions for new businesses, Wesleyan students and budding entrepreneurs, and have hosted a variety of events and activities.

SIDE STREET TO MAIN STREET In 1996, there were very few minority-owned businesses in Middlesex County. At the urging of the Middlesex County NAACP, the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce created the Side Street to Main Street Business & Leadership Development Program. The Side Street to Main Street Business & Leadership Development Program, is a one year long entrepreneurial and business development course, with a rigorous curriculum, designed to assist minority small business owners in the community, who have not had formal business training, to become more successful by developing the attitudes, skills and qualities necessary for effective business ownership and success, taking them from the Side Street to the Main Street of the business community. Since the inception of the Program in 1997, over 268 people have graduated from the Side Street to Main Street Business & Leadership Development Program, and it has been a successful and effective way in which we have encouraged the development and growth of small, minority-owned businesses, which are now part of the greater Middlesex County business community. Admission to the program is competitive. Applicants must attend a Mandatory 3-4 hour Program Orientation Meeting and complete a detailed application. The top 16 qualified applicants are admitted to the program. Although open to any Connecticut minority business, priority is given to Middlesex County minority businesses. Taught by The Essex Group Facilitator, Jim Jackson, the Side Street to Main Street Business & Leadership Development Program has won a number of awards since its first Program began in 1997/1998.

SIDE STREET TO MAIN STREET BUSINESS "KNOWHOW" PROGRAM Business “KNOW-HOW” is an intensive four session entrepreneurial program which provides practical knowledge for starting and building a small business. The program targeted at minority small business owners in Middlesex County and surrounding areas within the Eversource Energy foot print is designed as a companion to the Chamber’s award-winning year long Side Street to Main Street Business and Leadership Development Program, “Business “KNOW-HOW”, offers a preparatory instructional course for small business owners hoping to participate in the year long program. Participants in the Business “KNOW-HOW” Program learn a variety of business-related skills from both the program’s expert facilitator/instructor, and through group discussions of the homework assignments. Those who complete Business “KNOW-HOW” will be far better prepared for the rigors of the year long process of the Side Street to Main Street Business & Leadership Development Program, and will gain an extra rating point if they apply, and are accepted into the Program. MIDDLETOWN YOUTH PROGRAMS Every year since 2006, the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce has placed Middletown students into constructive summer employment through the Middletown region. The chamber has the capacity, through our dynamic membership, to place these youngsters into employment in a wide variety of professional fields for six weeks in the summer months working 20 hours per week. Six weeks might not seem like a long time, but it provides a solid foundation and a great glimpse into what life in the workforce is like. Program applicants are put through a comprehensive pre-employment screening process which takes into account their hobbies, interests, work experience, future plans, comfort level on the computer and on the phone and other important factors such as transportation and availability in the summer months. Our host sites come from the public sector, the non-profit sector, and most notably the private sector. This program teaches our young people not only the fundamentals of employment, such as getting to work on time and ready to contribute, but also the pride that comes with putting in a solid work week and receiving a paycheck that was earned through hard and honest work. Middlesex Youth Career Development Services is designed to empower out of school youth ages 18-24 providing them on the job training, paid internships or certificate programs at Middlesex Community College. Students worked with the program coordinator to set specific employment and/or education goals while in the program. Students are placed into employment after completion of the certificate program and are exited from the program and continue follow up services for four quarters.
