TABLE TOPS GAME NIGHT BY: JASON VO

Hey Dragons! If you guys didn’t know, Game Night was on 9/21. We had a great turnout and everyone seemed like they were having fun! Game Night was filled with activities including escape rooms, and two game tournaments, Super Smash Brothers 4 and chess. One of the escape rooms, Shipwrecked, had you look through puzzles and books to find the lost treasure. We had quite a few people participate in the Super Smash Brothers 4 tournament and 1st place went to Brandon Fajardo and the runner-up Diego Pedraza. We hope you had fun at Game Night and we wish to see you at the next one. 1

nMeet the Deadlinem Jeremiah Reynoso

Hi, my name is Jeremiah Reynoso, and I am one of the writers for the Deadline this year. I have recently been eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch (You’ll know if you take Professor Williams for math in the future). I am Filipino-American, but I have never actually traveled to the Philippines before. I was born in California sometime in 2002, and I’ve been living here pretty much my whole life. I love watching soccer. I was a little sad to see Argentina leave the World Cup earlier this year, but I was also very surprised by some of the outcomes. I would have never expected Sweden to enter the Quarterfinals without Ibrahimović or Germany to finish at the bottom of the Group Stage, but I was happy to see the young French side become champions. I also love playing chess, and if you know anything remotely about chess, I enjoy playing the King’s Indian for both black and white. If you ever want to play me, just tell me!

Hey guys! My name is Riley Strong and I am a writer for this year’s Deadline. I was born here in California and have lived here my entire life. I enjoy working out, playing basketball, playing video games and building my own computers. Just like Jeremiah, I too enjoy playing chess. However, Jeremiah is much better than me (just ask him about the chess tournament finals a few years back). I have an obsession with economics and politics so if you ever want to discuss those things with me, you are welcome to start a conversation! I was previously on the Yearbook promotion team before joining deadline and I helped work on the winning film for the 2018 Yesterday Again Film Festival. I also worked on the winning video for the 2018 My StudySync video contest. The video is still on the StudySync website, but I advise against watching it, as it’s pretty cringy. Anyways, I’m excited to have you all reading this year!

What’s Next for Kavanaugh?

Over the past few weeks, we have seen one of the most controversial and time-consuming Supreme Court nominations in our nation’s history. There have been multiple accusations against the nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, regarding sexual assault and sexual harassment in his younger years. The most notable accuser is Christine Blasey Ford. The Senate Judiciary Committee announced on Wednesday, October 3rd, that the FBI investigation they conducted on Kavanaugh yielded no conclusion and no evidence of sexual misconduct at any point in Kavanaugh’s life. However, this FBI investigation came with its controversies. According to Dr. Ford’s lawyer, Ford was never interviewed. The people that corroborated her story were never interviewed by the FBI either. This essentially puts the situation right back where it started. After everything was all said and done, Kavanaugh was confirmed by the Senate on October 6, 2018, in a 50-48 majority vote. This was not done without controversy, of course. We continue to see protests by those that are displeased by the nomination and his behavior during the hearings. If we can recall, this happened in the past with a Supreme Court nominee. Justice Clarence Thomas was accused of sexual misconduct during his hearings back in 1991. This was also a highly controversial nomination. As we know now, Thomas’s nomination was accepted and he was put on to the court. His confirmation vote was also very close, with a 52-48 majority vote. The question that remains: what will happen next? Some people are pleased, while others are extremely unhappy. In the end, only time will tell whether or not Judge Kavanaugh can handle the position. Over the course of the 10+ hours of testimony during Kavanaugh’s confirmation, not much can be gained past one’s preemptive opinion regarding the situation.

ELIZABETH ROCILI BY: ISABELLA ROCILI

Q. Why did you decide to attend Middle College? A. I decided to attend Middle College because I wanted a head start on college classes. Q. What’s your favorite part about Middle College? A. My favorite part about Middle College is having a free period and having a lot of time to do all my homework. I like having my free period 2nd, right after lunch, so I have more time to eat and don’t have to rush. I also like that my sister goes to school with me Q. What are some of your favorite hobbies? A. I really like baking and swimming. Q. If you could change anything about Middle College what would it be? A. I would have high school classes closer together. It’s hard rushing to different buildings and getting stuff from my locker in only ten minutes. Q. What college classes are you taking this semester? A. This semester I’m taking Spanish 001 with Professor Aguilar. I like that some of my friends are taking it, as well, so I’m not alone.

BY: DIEGO PEDRAZA In this issue, we’re featuring Olivia Martinez from the sophomore class! Her outfit consisted of a pair of black and white Primary Check Old Skool Vans, a nice and simple watch with a black band, and the main piece, a denim dress. This particular outfit really adopts the minimalist idea since the dress itself can make the whole fit. This denim-polyester mixed dress exhibits the summer feel. The long and careful sewn-in designs on the left and right sides of the stomach combined with the color of the washed denim, gives the outfit a vintage look. Her denim dress is also fitted to give it that clean look. She bought this dress off of Depop, which is a peer-to-peer social shopping app where you can find tons of items of different styles for low prices. Check out Olivia’s page on Depop, which is @olive3354, and see what kind of pieces she’s selling! 4

DINING WITH THE DRAGONS BY REAGAN ANDERSON

Unless you’ve been hiding in the library all year, you probably know that poke is the new big thing! AhiPoki is located across the street in front of Weberstown Mall, next to Panera Bread. This place is basically Chipotle with fish, but in a slightly untraditional way. You start off by choosing your rice/noodles and fish. Then, you choose your sauce. Options include two spicy and three normal sauces. Finally, you choose your toppings, such as seaweed salad and imitation crab. This is different from traditional poke, which is normally just fish and some mix-ins. This place is a little overpriced because you can get more food for less at other places. However, I do not mind the debatably small portion they give you. A regular bowl is $9.95, and a large is $11.95. They also have other things like musubi, which is rice and spam wrapped in seaweed. There is also the Ahirrito—a questionable mixture of a poke bowl and a burrito. Personally, I like this place and if you ever have time, I’d say to check it out.

KHUSHI PAL Q: What is your favorite activity to do in your free time? A: My favorite activity to do in my free time is honestly nothing interesting. It’s just to eat and watch shows or Youtube videos. Q: If you could know one thing about your future, what would you want to know and why? A: I would want to know what my occupation is, since I’m pretty confused right now with myself, and most of the time I don’t really know what I’m doing. Q: Where would you want to live in the future and why? A: In the future, I’d want to live somewhere around Los Angeles. A lot happens there, and there’s a lot of people, and it’d probably just be an interesting experience. Q: If money wasn’t an issue, what would be your dream job and why? A: I really have no idea what my dream job would be, as I’m very indecisive and terrible at making decisions. Q. What is your favorite fast food chain? A. EASY, Taco Bell.

CHESS

BY JEREMIAH REYNOSO Chess is a critical-thinking game with origins dating back almost 1500 years. It was not until the mid-1900s when the first official chess tournaments were held. Now, legends such as Kasparov, Karpov, and Fischer remain acknowledged in the history of chess. Currently, Magnus Carlsen is proclaimed as the greatest in chess, and he has reached a peak rating of 2882. Chess is a board game played between two players on a board with sixty-four squares, sixteen white pieces, and sixteen black pieces. Of those sixteen black or white pieces, there are eight pawns, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, one king, and one queen, and they all have unique styles of movement. The pawns are restricted to moving forward, except for when they capture other pieces or do something called “en passant”, rooks move horizontally and vertically, bishops move diagonally, the king moves one space in all directions, and the queen can move vertically, horizontally, and diagonally. In order to win, one of the players must trap their opponent’s king until they are unable to move. So what are you waiting for? Gather some friends and start playing the wonderful game of chess!.

STAFF INTERVIEW- MRS: jara

BY KAREN NGUYEN VO

Why did you decide to teach in MCHS? At first, I didn’t know anything about Middle College. I taught at Christa McAuliffe Middle School for a year, but I first applied to be in Bear Creek because I wanted to teach in a high school. One day, I saw a job opening for Middle College, and I applied to be a teacher here. I got in, ad I’ve been here eve since! What do you like to do in your free time? I like to read, although I don’t have time to do that nowadays. I try to exercise and balance my life. On the weekends, I’m a taxi mom! My son does soccer, my daughter does dance, and my other daughter is just the light in every room that she enters. Any advice to MCHS students? Don’t overdo it! I see so many students doing a bunch of extracurriculars and stacking up on their college classes — just remember to take a break and remember to enjoy high school! An associate’s degree doesn’t mean anything to colleges besides that you did sixty units. In fact, if you get too many units, you might not be able to receive financial aid for when you actually go to college. 8

BY KELLY SUTH

Electric and brilliantly stupid, Shaun of the Dead is the first installment in the Cornetto Trilogy. For those of you who don’t know, the Cornetto Trilogy is a series of three movies directed by the legendary Edgar Wright. You may recognize some of his other films—such as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and the extremely raved Baby Driver. While the Cornetto Trilogy is actually an official series of work, it is unconventional in the fact that the movies are not actually tied together in plot. Instead, each movie is a parody of an overused movie trope. Shaun of the Dead is a parody of the all-too-common and familiar zombie apocalyptic film. Edgar Wright is known for his outstanding use of visual comedy. While most comedy directors of our day rely on witty and humorous dialogue to uphold the comedic standard of the movie, Edgar Wright incorporates laughter into all aspects of a movie. Sure—a funny script gets you somewhere, but creative staging, timing, and composition will get you even further. If you watch one of Wright’s films, you’ll recognize the unique and powerful tempo it follows right away.

Shaun of the Dead centers around Shaun, an unmotivated Londoner who has no direction in life after his girlfriend breaks up with him. He spends most of the time with his best friend, Ed, slugging around aimlessly. Oblivious to the world, London is overwhelmed by a zombie apocalypse before they even notice. The rest of the movie follows Shaun’s mission to locate his family and ex-girlfriend and bring them to a safe place. There’s a reason why Edgar Wright is the ringmaster of cult followings. This movie is one for the books.

Timothy rico your soul by forrest

This is one of my go-to songs to listen to when I just want to chill and have a fun time. I love the good vibes of the song, and I like how positive the message of the song is. It makes me want to spread along good vibes, which I really enjoy doing.

chanel ugale martini blue by dpr live

This is my favorite song because the beat is different compared to most hiphop music that I listen to, and it’s also a very upbeat song—the type you can

chuofan yu

somebody else by the 1975

I like this song because it’s very dark, and a lot of people can relate to it. The song is about how someone that means a lot to you has moved on.

Ajala Lee

Black Spiderman by Logic

The song has very meaningful lyrics about racial equality and injustice, and has a good beat and chorus to accompany it.

rose yang lullaby by got7

I love this song because it’s in four different languages—Spanish, Mandarin, English, and Korean. We love our international kings! 11
