CLUB FEATURE: CULTURE CLUB

Hey Dragons! This issue, we are featuring Culture Club. The club meets every Thursday from 5:00 PM to around 5:45 PM. Every week, we meet up and learn about different cultures. Some annual events Culture Club has are Greek Olympics—this year’s winner’s being Antonio Quesada, Taylor Luong, and Kienlac Mai—Culture Cuisine, and the San Francisco trip at the end of the year. It was a wonderful night for Fear Factor, which was on October 25th. If you want to participate in more Culture Club activities, swing by and check it out!

Meet the Deadline

Patricia Bayona

Hi! My name is Patricia Bayona, and I am a junior writer for Deadline. Some little things I like to do is practice film photography in my free time. I like to collect and take pictures with older film cameras, not only because they are very interesting, but also because I think the pictures that are developed are more authentic. I also like to listen to all types of music, like SZA and Joji. Music is one of my favorite things because of all the diversity within it. I listen to every genre when it comes to music—anything from Classic Rock to R&B. Another thing I do in my free time is mix music with my brother and practice “scratching” with records.

I love playing sports, especially basketball and volleyball. I have been playing basketball for as long as I can remember, and I used to always play volleyball with my sisters when I was little.

Another interesting thing about me is that I am Guamanian or Chamorro. Being Chamorro means that I am connected to the beautiful island of Guam. I love my culture and representing it, whether it be through dancing or learning how to make our traditional foods. I am very proud of where I come from, and once I have enough money, I hope to visit the island one day and my family that lives there.

Hi! My name is Diego Pedraza, and I’m a senior writer for this year’s Deadline. I’m African American, Mexican, and Japanese. I’ve been to Mexico many times and have been to Japan as well. I’ll be going back to Japan for a brief while in November for a huge religious event.

I’ve been writing the first few articles for the Dragon Fashion section, and if you couldn’t tell already, I like clothes and art. I could talk all about clothes and shoes for a good couple of hours. I like going to different cities because it’s one of my favorite areas to shop and observe other people’s outfits. If you ever want to talk about shoes, streetwear brands, or art, just come find me!

Also, something else about me is that I like music. I like all types of music actually, but hip-hop has a special place in my heart. I think new hip-hop is good, but I believe going back to the roots is very important. Not a lot of people take the time to listen to the storytelling, clever rhymes, and melodies of the earlier stages. I may have not been alive back then, but I still know what’s good.

MCHS Students Interview Veterans for Library of Congress

On Friday, October 12th, a group of seniors had the opportunity to interview some of our nation’s veterans at Congressman Jerry McNerney’s office.

The program was presented to them by Mrs. Giannone, who was able to get in touch with the people that put the interview event together.

The veterans included heroes from World War II, the Vietnam War, and the Iraq War. These interviews are included in a program that connects them into the Library of Congress, where the public will be able to access them for generations to come.

Nine of our seniors had the opportunity to participate in this event over the course of six hours.

Veterans ranged from combat veterans in the jungles of Vietnam and the fields of Iraq to Army administration in Germany and broadcasting for our troops stationed overseas.

Bryan Sunglao and Micaela Sansone were among those students that interviewed the veterans.

Bryan described his experience as “unique, genuine, and extremely humbling,” and said that being able to personally hear the struggles that our veterans faced, as well as the love and respect they have for each other, is a truly special experience. Micaela appreciated the experience of “having the opportunity to see them on a more personal level and, if anything, deepened [her] respect for them.”

Many of the other students spoke about how impactful speaking to our veterans was and put a face to the difficulties of war. Guadalupe Farfan specifically said that it was “a sort of reality shock because war is such an abstract concept. It made the war real.”

Some of the other students addressed how their perspective had changed from their experience.

Jaap Khalsa described the experience as “one of the most uplifting experiences of [his] life. Serving in the military is truly a great honor, and they motivated [him] to continue to work hard in [his] endeavors. For that, I salute them.”

Why did you decide to attend Middle College?

Coming to Middle College was something my mind was set on in sixth grade. I don’t know why, but it was. I think that part of the reason I came was because I knew that it would give me a great opportunity to start my life, but another part of me liked the idea of being able to attend yet another school that provided the ability to get to know everyone.

What is your favorite part about Middle College?

Definitely the people, upperclassmen and freshman. I’ve built close bonds with so many people, in the two months I’ve been here, that I hope will last all throughout the years.

What is your dream job?

Ever since the fourth grade my dream job has always revolved around animals... so a veterinarian.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to play badminton with my dad and my sisters, hang out with friends, serve my community through Key Club events, read Wattpad stories, and binge watch Netflix series. I also enjoy taking photos and am looking forward to getting into photography.

DRAGON FASHION

In this week’s issue, we’ll be taking a look at an outfit worn by Hannah Lugtu. First off, on the bottom, we have your go-to Vans Old Skool Black and White Checkered Skate Shoes from Tillys. Hannah’s no-show socks and pin rolled jeans bring more emphasis on her shoes. She mentioned her jeans were bought from a thrift store, which brings up a great reason why more people should go to discounted department stores to find budget-friendly clothing. You can discover many great pieces from these stores if you have the patience.

Going back to Hannah’s outfit, she has a striped shirt which would make a nice outfit already, but she has a few accessories to add. The black beanie really compliments the striped shirt and checkered shoes. To really top things off, she has a transparent jacket that gives her outfit a pop of bright color and keeps her warm. These pieces together really makes me see a fit ready for the city!

DINING WITH THE DRAGONS

Hey Dragons! By now, most of you guys should know about the food trucks on our campus which are located behind Holt. This issue’s highlight is the Petite Paris Cafe and Creperie. You can find it by looking for a green truck with Parisian decorations. Upon chatting with the incredibly kind owner, Salvador, I found out that he and his wife, Karla, started the food truck on a bit of a whim. The simple idea of him liking coffee and her liking crepes led them to the grand idea of making a French-style food truck.

Nikaela and I ordered two cold brew coffees with creamer and sweetener, as well as one chicken pesto crepe.

We found the large cup of coffee to be very smooth, delicious, and worth the price of $2.50. Nikki and I shared the chicken pesto crepe, which costs $5, and we both found it to be filling. The pesto and cheese create a very rich combination, which can be a bit much to handle. If you’re not a fan of cheese, I definitely recommend asking for less or no cheese. Otherwise, the crepe is a great food option to consider when you want something unique, shareable, and healthy. Overall, I recommend all of you Dragons to go to Petite Paris Cafe and Creperie when you have the time!

What’s your favorite genre of music? Why? “It would have to be R&B or rap because it always puts me in a hype mood.”

What are your hobbies?

“I like to consider myself a very artistic person. I like to sing, play guitar, listen to music, and draw.”

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why? “If I could go anywhere in the world, I would want to go to Europe because it is full of history and beauty.”

Do you have any irrational fears?

“Yes, SPIDERS, I despise spiders.”

Why did you choose to come to MCHS? “I chose to come to MCHS because I knew I was going to get an amazing opportunity to grow and progress in my academics, and I know that I will be going forward in the career that I want to pursue.”

You’re thrown into a flying bus filled with many people. Suddenly, you hear a HONK! You see people thank the bus driver and jump off the bus! You look down and see a massacre of skydivers. You watch for the next thirty seconds, and then you find that you’re one of the last people on the bus. The bus driver says it’s the last stop, but you don’t want to jump off. You tell the driver you’re AFK, but the bus driver throws you off anyway.

Suddenly, you’re flying. Wind whips your face, and you remember that you forgot to thank the bus driver, so it makes you sad. You land in Flush Factory, then, as you walk into a building, you look into your backpack and find a pickaxe.

You take it out, and you hear someone’s footsteps from the second floor. You go up the stairs, but KA-BOOM! Let’s help you find a better landing spot.

In a recent poll taken on the best places to drop in Fortnite, Pleasant Park was favored the most. The next favorable landing place was Fatal Fields, so if you want to do better in your next Fortnite game, drop by these places!

STAFF INTERVIEW: MS. ANTENUcCI

BY JASON VO 1.Do you have any regrets in life?

Gosh darn, that could be a book right there. I think one regret I have in life is not finishing college. I believe that education is important, and if I could go back in time, I would finish my college. I think that it’s important that kids nowadays realize how important pursuing college is, even though I know that YouTube makes more money.

2.If you didn’t have the job you have now, what job would you like to have? Why? That’s a tough one because it changes. My interests change a lot, so at this time I would have to say that I would like to be a veterinarian, or work with animals to some capacity. Large animals are my favorite, and Doctor Pol is one of my favorite shows. I think it’d be cool to live on a farm where I am surrounded by all sorts of animals, both big and small.

3.What do you like to do in your free time and what are some of your hobbies?

I would say that I spend a considerable amount of time with my grandchildren and my kids… my life is pretty boring. I did all the exciting things when I was younger.

KELLY’S (GH)OOL MOVIES: TRAIN TO BUSAN Modern Korean cinema burst to the forefront of the movie industry when Oldboy came out in 2003. The world suddenly realized there was something special about the unique energy of this cinematic realm.

To no surprise, only more recognition came to the Korean movie industry as the years went by. Beloved directors, like Bong Joon Ho and Park Chan Wook, became known internationally as geniuses of their time—so much so that huge Hollywood companies trusted them to incorporate it in the American industry. You may actually recognize some popular American movies that were directed by Korean directors; Okja, Snowpiercer, and Stoker, to name a few. All of them starring the likes of Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, and Nicole Kidman.

In 2016, the world was once again engrossed in a thrilling Korean film, and thus came the rebirth of the Korean fever. Train to Busan is one of the most popular movies that ever came out of South Korea, quickly and unsurprisingly acclaiming international fame. Directed by Yeon Sang Ho, the plot centers around a busy father and his daughter taking a trip to the seaside city of Busan. While on the train, a zombie outbreak occurs, and they are forced to fight for their lives. Yeon Sang Ho masterminds a invigorating balance of gut-busting entertainment and frail human emotions.

It’s pure thrill, and you can watch it on Netflix. Catch it when you can.

DIY MUDDY BUDDIES WITH NIKKI

MATERIALS

Chex Cereal Powdered Sugar Spatula Chocolate chips Measuring utensils Butter Peanut Butter Candy Bowl

1. Put 1 cup of chocolate chips, 2. Pour the melted mixture 1/2 cup of peanut butter, into a bowl with 9 cups of and 1/4 cup of butter in a your favorite Chex cereal. microwavable bowl. Microwave for a minute or until melted.

4. Mix in your favorite candies and you’re done!

3. Put the cereal in a Ziploc bag with 2 cups of powdered sugar. Mix until the cereal is coated.

Optional: Package your final product and share with friends ;)

This musical emotionally describes the life and academic fears of the main character, Veronica Sawyer, who went from a bullied nerd to a popular girl.

The song, in the end, is a rollercoaster of emotions. You can feel what Veronica 11 feels, and you can imagine being in her shoes.
