SAD BOI HOURS
I Don't Love You by Urban Zakapa The song is particularly painful because it has a soft and sorrowful piano melody that one would expect in a song about being rejected. Instead, the singers are on the flip-side, saying that they don’t love their partners anymore, and that no matter how passionately their partners love them or cry for them, the initial sparks of love are so far gone that the singers can’t even bring themselves to say “I’m sorry” or “Forgive me.” It highlights an all-too-real possibility of loving or being loved by someone so passionately,
America by Simon and Garfunkel Everyone interprets it differently, but to me, this song is about loneliness and the American condition of never having quite enough. A man boards a train with his lover, and they pass time playing games and watching the moon rise. At the end of it all she falls asleep, leading into his confession: “Cathy, I’m lost, I said though I knew she was sleeping. I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why.” The poignancy is so tangible that you can feel yourself in the train car with him, sharing in his universal loneliness, his inability to settle into himself.
jealous by labrinth
The song makes me reflect on the feelings that we could all relate to when we feel jealous. Whenever we see someone or something that we want, we can’t help but to hurt inside thinking about what could have been. The song repeats,”I’m jealous…,” listing all the things that is able to be closer to that someone than we could’ve ever been. Hearing this line, ”It’s hard for me to say, I’m jealous of the way you’re happy without me,” highlights the overall gut-wrenching feeling that we get when we realize that they are happier with someone else. “Jealous” makes a great song to cry your heart out to.
Watch you sleep by girl in red This song is about being so in love with someone that you never want to leave them, so you’ll watch them sleep. Debatably a little creepy, but it’s okay. Even though she is singing about being in love, the music doesn’t really match that. The music is really slow, simple, and somewhat melancholy, so it is perfect if you ever need to cry a little. This song is very versatile too! Her voice is really soft and soothing, so it is a great song to fall asleep to. You could also jump in your car, if you have one, and go for a postcry late night drive, where you overthink every moment of your life.

FRESHMAN INTERVIEW BY: JASON VO What are you proud of, but never have an excuse to talk about? Well, I’m very proud of my six-pack, but I never have an excuse to talk about it. I’ve always been working out after I went to Catalina Island in Middle school because I wanted to look top-tier when I went swimming. What is your favorite smell and why? My favorite smell has to be the smell of berries because it reminds me of a happy feeling inside. It also smells nice. What do you value most in a friendship? I value trust most in a friendship because when a very good friend stabs you in the back, it hurts. I don’t want to end up in bad a friendship with a toxic friend. What is your favorite sauce? Why? If I were to choose a favorite sauce it would be Cool Ranch because it has cool in the name, meaning it must be cool. It’s also good on Chicken McNuggets; I love me some fresh chicken McNuggets with a swimming pool of cool ranch! But if the food is good enough, it doesn’t need sauce. If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future or anything else, what would you want to know? The first thing I would want to know is how successful I’m going to be because if I turn out to be rich, I’m going to drop out and wait until I get rich. The second thing I want to find out is how many girlfriends I’m going to have and who they are going to be because that will give me godlike powers. What’s your favorite song and why? My favorite song right now is Better by Khalid. Any song by Khalid is great. I like Better because of the vibe, and the beat goes hard. The music video was pretty good too. It had cars drifting while he danced in the middle. That’s dangerous, but danger is cool. 4

CONGRATS ACADEC! BY KELLY SUTH
On the second of February, our classmates filed into the gym of Lathrop High School for the regional Academic Decathlon. After months of studying, it was finally time for them to reap the fruits of their hard work and commitment. In the end, Middle College High School earned a significant amount of medals in all fields. In even more exciting news, Division One of our Academic Decathlon team won top school overall, securing a position in the State Championship in March! Competing in Division one are Therese Rico, Bryan Sunglao, Taylor Luong, Chandler Clark, Jasmine Ma, Ashton Beattie, Musaid Abdullah, Basma Abdel-Magied, and Emma Faszer. This is the first time that Middle College will be going to state. Evidently, hours of hard work were put into this competition. In a recount of their preparation, Bryan Sunglao told Deadline, “I thought it was amazing to see the members of our team studying hard for this competition, especially Chandler, who arranged several group study session for us. I think we were lucky to have this group of people who were dedicated to the books.” When asked for a statement, Chandler Clark said, “All of our acadec team, including the alternates, really pushed themselves to do their best and it payed off!” At the moment of victory, Therese Rico recalled that “Once they called Middle College, it was like an explosion of cheers all around, and it made all the stress and studying and late nights taking notes feel extremely worth it.” When asked about winning, Taylor Luong called it one of the top ten moments of his life. Hopefully, we can savour it once more at state. As Chandler added to the end of his statement, “High hopes!” In the meantime, be sure to congratulate everyone who competed at Regionals. Medal or no medal, an insane amount of work went into this accomplishment. 5
DEADLINE UNSOLVEDFAITH HEDGEPETH September 6, 2012 (Chapel Hill, North Carolina)Faith Hedgepeth went to a rush event at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the university she was attending. After leaving around 7:00, she met up with her roommate, Karena Rosario, to study at the library. At around 11, the pair went back to their apartment for about an hour, and then went out to a nightclub. By 3am the pair were back home. Karena then leaves around 4:30am with a friend September 7, 2012- Karena Rosario enters her apartment with a friend to find Faith wrapped in a quilt, dead in her room. Faith had apparently been beaten over the head with an empty liquor bottle. Also at the crime scene was a note that said “I’M NOT STUPID ***** JEALOUS.” The note was written on the bottom of a paper bag with a ballpoint pen. The note’s meaning has never been decoded. Other than DNA, the note was the only evidence found at the crime scene. The night before Faith had left a voicemail on one of her friends phones. An audio expert was able to decode the recording to hear Faith crying for help. She was with a male who went by Eric and a female who went by Rosie. Eric said “I think she’s dying.” and Rosie responded “Do it anyways.” The call was timestamped 1:23am, when Faith and Karena were at the club. However it is heavily debated on whether or not this time stamp is correct because security cameras saw Faith leave the night club. Theories- The police are almost certain that Faith knew her killers, maybe not well, but she knew them. With DNA samples taken from the crime scene, they are able to put together a computer generated picture of what her killer may have looked like. However, the innocence of Karena Rosario has been debated by many. Some people suspect that she is Rosie in the phone call, Rosie being short for Rosario. Also, she was the one who made the 911 call, which was very jumbled and vague about what had happened. Faith seamingly had little to no enemies, and it is unclear why anyone would have wanted her dead. Over 2,000 have been interviewed in this case and it still remains UNSOLVED. 6

STAFF INTERVIEW
S I V A D . R M
By: Karen Nguyen Vo
Why did you decide to become the principal for Middle College? I was the principal for McNair High School for thirteen years, and while I loved the school, I thought it was time for me to change and start over again. I have absolutely enjoyed my time here—I love the kids and the closeness of our staff here, and the success of our students here at MCHS speaks volumes about the abilities of our kids and passion of our staff. What has been the most fun part of your job? What about the most difficult part? The most fun part about my job is being able to see kids succeed, jump over barriers, and rise to their potential. The hardest part about my time in MCHS has been seeing families having issues that directly affect our students. Personally, I was an at-risk child in a broken environment, and that, combined with my other life experiences, have allowed me to gain and share wisdom to students dealing with similar situations. What do you like to do in your free time? In my free time, I like to fish, read, cycle, and spend time with my family—especially with my two girls. Lately, I’ve been remodeling my house with my wife. Last year, I went to New York, Chicago, and had a twelve-day excursion from California to South Dakota. In South Dakota, my family and I got to herd buffalo while we were in a small Chevy. What advice would you give to current Middle College students? Follow your passions and continue to reach for your dreams. When you get a job, make sure that it’s in an area that you’re passionate about. By then, you won’t be going to a dreary workplace; you’ll be going to have fun. For me, I’ve worked with teens for the past 38 years, and I’ve enjoyed all of my time at work. Anything else you would like MCHS students to know about you? Don’t let Qazi keep your rocket—I let him use my rocket for MESA and he gave it back to me with two broken fins. 7

Dear Deadline, How do I not procrastinate? -everymchsstudent
Hello Isaiah! It can be hard finding a romantic interest in high school. First off, keep being your beautiful vibrant self. As a gay man, I understand that it may be even harder to find that special someone. Evidently, not everyone you are interested in will be gay, pansexual, or bisexual (and all the other things). Even so, you shouldn’t give up. Just keep being you, and when love happens, it will happen truthfully. —loveisloveislovE

Start by doing your assignments the day that they’re assigned to you, rather than doing them the day they’re due. You can try to keep yourself focused on your work by turning off your phone, or by keeping any other distractions away from you. If you have an assignment that’s due a few weeks from now, like an essay or something, you can do some of it each day. That way, you don’t have to rush to finish it later. —thegreatestwriter
