MEET THE DEADLINE Reagan Anderson
What’s up? I’m Reagan Anderson, and I’m a writer and graphic designer on this year’s Deadline! Two of my favorite things are watching movies and listening to music. I really could talk about movies and music for the rest of my life. I’ll honestly listen to any kind of music. I don’t really like a specific artist, but I like specific songs. Movie-wise, as long as it’s not a superhero or Civil War movie, I’m down. I really do just love watching movies. Something else about me is that I’m a podcast fiend. Every morning, I listen to a podcast while I get ready. For the majority of the time, the podcasts are either about murders or music. Speaking of murder, I love true crime. My favorite crimes are unsolved murders and disappearances. That’s why I’m really excited to able to write about them now! I also find the paranormal really interesting. I love to hear people’s ghost stories! I also really like to travel. One of my life goals is to visit every continent, except Antarctica! So far, one of my favorite places I’ve ever been to is New York City. I really liked how busy it was and that there was always something to do. I also love going to San Francisco for similiar reasons. I can’t wait for you to read not only my articles but also the rest of the Deadline!
Hello everyone! My name is Kelly Suth, and I am a writer and graphic designer for the Middle College High School Deadline. My family comes from the sun-drenched country of Cambodia, and my grandparents were raised in the small farm town of Slaap Leng. After the Khmer Rouge occupation, they settled in the city of Phnom Penh. Subsequently, I spent a lot of time there in my childhood. If you ever plan on traveling to Cambodia, come to me for some recommendations and advice: I’m at your service. I am also a big lover of movies. Some of my current favorites areThe End of the Tour, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and American Beauty. In my free time, I’m either reading an article, watching a movie, or hanging out with my friends. You can probably catch us slurping iced coffee and fighting over what songs to play (our music tastes are irreconcilable). Only Melissa Cabana ever agrees with my song selection. To cap it off, I’m always rushing through campus or napping in my car. Catch me sometime and say hello. It would be my pleasure.

THE TRIBUNAL OF MIDDLE COLLEGE BY RILEY STRONG
The Tribunal of Middle College High School has served a purpose for over ten years. Yet, it seems as if the student body—underclassmen in particular—doesn’t know much about the system and its function. The current advisors, Mr. Venhuizen and Mrs. Giannone, were interviewed for this article. With their help, Tribunal’s establishment, purpose, pros, and cons were explained more clearly. Tribunal was established in 2005 by Mr. Hall, a former AVID teacher. Its purpose was to serve as an advisory council to help students maintain the high academic and citizenship standards of MCHS. With the presence of Tribunal, a certain stigma can develop among the student body. The interview addressed some of the primary concerns students may have. The advisors feel that Tribunal is a good system because students can look out for each other. The school is small, and this system is easier for students, although the advisors do believe that freshmen representation and scheduling would further improve Tribunal. A key topic addressed during the interview was the perceived power that Tribunal members have. The advisors believe that this is a fair concern and have seen a handful of students in the past feel entitled. Teachers keep in touch with Tribunal members to ensure that they are not abusing their power. Over 90 students participated in a survey sharing their opinion on Tribunal. Along with the multiple choice questions, students had the option to elaborate more on their opinions. Students are always welcome to contact Tribunal members with questions. You can also read the more specific rules and purposes of Tribunal on pages 14-16 in your planner.

Sophia Atendido BY ISABELLA ROCILI How was your first rally? “It was pretty stressful. I had to do a lot of things for rally, probably more than I needed to. Being queen was pretty stressful, but when it came to the actual rally, it was pretty fun! Our performance didn’t go exactly as planned. I was very tired afterwards, but I had a lot of fun screaming my lungs out for all the other classes. Surprisingly, all of the classes were very supportive of me, and the whole freshmen class and all of them did amazing too.” Why did you decide to attend Middle College? “I wanted to get ahead education-wise, and I heard that Middle College offered college classes for high school students. I thought that was pretty cool, and my friend suggested it to me since he was going to try and get in as well. Although it meant leaving a lot of friends behind, I felt like it would be a good decision to apply.” What is your favorite part about Middle College? “It has got to be the people. Everyone here is so nice, especially the upperclassmen. Oh! And the freedom we have in this school is pretty nice too, along with the many food trucks we have on campus.”
DRAGON FASHION BY: Diego Pedraza Temperatures have been dropping recently which means sweater weather season is coming. Our special dragon today will be Raiya So from the junior class. First off, he has a denim jean jacket from Dillard’s containing a really washed look, giving him the accessibility to use it for warmth or as an accessory. Then, he has a really nice heather grey SuperDry long sleeve for his top. His chocolate colored zipper pants are from H&M. Lastly, he has a pair of sashiko inspired Adidas NMD_R1s, and let me say, these are a fire pair of shoes. I would I have bought them if he hadn’t first. Don’t want to steal his clout. 4
DINING WITH THE DRAGONS BY KAREN NGUYEN VO
For this issue, we will be focusing on Stockton’s newest bubble tea spot, Bubble Leaf, which is located at 526 West Benjamin Holt Drive. They offer your standard bubble teas, as well as smoothies and food. When I interviewed the owner, Bryan, I found out that he wanted to open up Bubble Leaf because he wanted to focus on giving Stockton good, local foodie places (with high-quality, organic ingredients). To quote Bryan, “Yes, there are places like Quickly and T4, but they don’t give much back to the community. They often don’t use good ingredients. Here, we only use organic and high-quality ingredients for our teas.” Nikaela ordered a split cup with jasmine milk tea and regular boba on one side and Thai tea with boba on the other side. I also ordered a split cup with a Matchachata (horchata plus matcha powder) and regular boba on one side, and oolong milk tea and regular boba on the other side. In general, the tapioca boba was chewy and teas were enjoyable but watery after a short period of time. However, the owners are still experimenting with their tea recipes so that will hopefully change soon. Bubble Leaf is currently on their soft opening and are open daily from 11 A.M. to 10 P.M. Stop by for a taste soon, Dragons!
RONEL ACUAVERA BY JEREMIAH REYNOSO What do you like about this school? “I like the people, and I also like the food trucks here. The teachers here are also really nice, especially Ms. Ogden.” What do you like about Ms. Ogden? “She’s sarcastic, and she really communicates with the students. She really has a unique personality.” What’s your favorite food truck? “I like the waffle truck because they actually know me by my first name!” What’s your favorite sport? “Basketball... I’m really competitive when it comes to sports, and I like to destroy people when I post up on them.” What’s your favorite music genre? “Hip hop or rap because it helps me get into a good rhythm when I want to be competitive.” 5
DEADLINE UNSOLVED: THE ISDAL WOMAN
Isdal Valley, Norway- The year is 1970. An unidentified woman has been found burned to death, laying across a group of rocks; all distinctive markings and labels had been removed. Bergen, Norway- Two suitcases are recovered from the left luggage department. Fingerprints connect them to the women. Inside are clothing, wigs, cosmetics, teaspoons, eczema cream, a show box, a coded note, and money from a variety of countries. BREAKTHROUGH, right? WRONG! All the labels, even the label on the eczema bottle, had been cut off or destroyed. An empty shoe box may be the only useful clue. When the police investigated the shoe box, they were pointed to a shoe store about four hours away. The store owner remembered the women because she took an unusually long time to pick out her shoes, and she smelled like garlic. He identified the woman as Fenella Lorch. Norway- Armed with a name, police begin to investigate the woman’s recent movements. The problem… Fenella Lorch is not her real name... and neither of the several other names she had been using to check into hotels across Norway were her name. People at the hotels remembered her as an elegantly dressed woman who would often request to change rooms. Investigators also learned that the women would often incorporate German phrases in her English. Norway- The year is 2017, almost 50 years later, and the murder nor the identity of the Isdal Woman has been solved. All hope is lost until... the women’s jaw is found. For decades, it had been assumed that the jaw had been thrown away because it smelled bad. However, it was laying in the archives of Haukeland University. The teeth were tested, and it was determined that the woman was most likely of European descent Today, the identity of the Isdal Woman is still unknown. The most common conclusion is that the woman was a spy who had a bad day. We may never know who the Isdal Woman is or why she was murdered because this case is still UNSOLVED.

STAFF INTERVIEW: Ms. England
8
BY JASON VO #1: If you weren’t teaching English and AVID, what other subjects would you have taught and why? “I enjoy teaching sewing because the design and creation involved ask for imagination, hands-on skills, practicality, thrift, and when each project is completed, there is a tangible result!” #2: If you were not a teacher, what other career paths would you have wanted to do and why? “I have been fortunate to enjoy several career paths in addition to my current position as a formal classroom teacher. All of my work has included teaching, and I thoroughly enjoy a learning and teaching environment.” #3: What is your most memorable moment in teaching? “There have been and are many memorable moments. When I recognize an inner smile at school, it is usually in response to the group creation process that occurs in the classroom.” #4: What are some of your most embarrassing teacher or student moments? “I am not sure how to respond to this question. I do stand corrected frequently; I do find that my idea of what we can ‘accomplish’ in any given class period does not always match the student idea of what can be ‘accomplished’.”
KELLY’S KOOL MOVIES Isle of dogs
After his success with Fantastic Mr. Fox, Wes Anderson comes back with his second stop-motion film called Isle of Dogs. Impeccably crafted and overflowing with zany energy, this film will delight dog lovers and film buffs alike. It’s no secret that Wes Anderson is known for his perfect composition and symmetry. In the case of Isle of Dogs, Wes Anderson keeps his signature look and applies it to the futuristic Japanese town of Megasaki. After a rampant virus infects the canine population of Megasaki, Mayor Kobayashi banishes all dogs to Trash Island. Sick and untreated, the dogs on Trash Island wander aimlessly and slowly approach death. Atari Kobayashi, the adopted warden of the mayor, embarks on a journey to save his dog from this fate. While on Trash Island, he encounters a rough pack of dogs who decides to help him on his journey. Without argument, Isle of Dogs is visually stunning. The colors and textures are meticulous and purposeful. However one can argue that the film places style over story- as is often the complaint about Wes Anderson pieces. While Isle of Dogs is visually unique, the same cannot be said about the core of the plot. The story is simple and sweet, yet unrevolutionary. Despite its shortcomings, Isle of Dogs is a unique and extremely worthwhile watch. It is witty and sardonic, just as much as it is tender and beautiful.

DEAR DEADLINE, I’ve been trying to discover what to do with my life. How do I know which major to choose? How do I know what I like? -yello_sweatpants
Dear xxpalmtree123, The first thing I do when trying to decide what professor I should take is to ask my fellow classmates who I know have taken the class before and ask their opinion on them. If that doesn’t help, I check ratemyprofessor.com, but be aware that several of the students that rate a professor on this website are usually just mad that they didn’t receive a good grade because the class wasn’t an easy A. -xoxobanana

Dear yello_sweatpants, It’s not weird to feel lost or confused! Almost everyone has wondered where exactly they are heading in life. Choosing a major is hard, but it’s also a very important choice you have to make in your educational career. First off, evaluate your passions and interests. Your major should also align with your career goals since it will aid you in getting those jobs. It’s important and stressful, but remember that your life isn’t decided from it. -sunnyDxCucumber
DEAR DEADLINE, How do I choose the best professor for a class? -xxpalmtree123
