BY: JEREMIAH REYNOSO

Woah, hey Dragons! If you didn’t know, we actually haven’t made an issue of the Deadline since last year! Can you believe that?! On a side note, we are already more than halfway through the school year too! Realizations aside, break was short, and I am pretty sure most of you wanted a longer vacation. Now, we have a whole new semester ahead of us, which means different college classes and different teachers. Continue to strive for success in this second half of the year, and we look forward to writing more issues of the Deadline for you! 1

GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN BY RILEY STRONG

The 2019 Government Shutdown was one that we were all prepared for. President Donald Trump did what most expected and stayed stern on his stance on significantly extending funding for further protection at our southern border. The 2018-2019 Government Shutdown was the record holder for the longest in U.S. history, beating the 21-day shutdown of 1995-1996. The government shutdown was caused by Congress and President Trump being unable to agree on a budget. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has reiterated that he will block the Senate from considering legislation that Trump will not support. Trump has also maintained that he will veto any legislation that does not include funding for his border wall. The Democrats pushed that the Government must reopen before they considered negotiations in regards to funding the border wall. During the shutdown, Trump and high ranking Democrat officials, such as Nancy Pelosi, had discussions regarding the funding. This mostly amounted to both sides holding stern on their stances. Trump stated that he no longer seeks a constant concrete wall on the border. However, Trump also stated that he is willing to declare national emergency in order to gain funding. Although, he prefers to go through congress first. Throughout this shutdown, a significant number of federal workers were affected. Agencies that aren’t considered crucial were closed partially or completely and those workers went without pay. Crucial agencies, such as the military, continued working without pay. However, members of congress maintained their bi-weekly paychecks because they are not determined by the annual budget. This has lead to significant protests due to the government’s inability to find a compromise in the budget. As of January 25th, the shutdown is temporarily over. A temporary budget was signed in order to get workers paid and for the government fully function for the next few weeks. The president and congress plan on continuing negotiations regarding the full budget for the next fiscal year.

DAN VO How has been your Middle College experience been so far? My Middle College experience has been great so far. I’ve met so many new people with some interesting personalities. They make my whole experience a million times better, and I don’t know how I would be able to come to school every day without them. Not to mention the teachers at Middle College are some of the best I’ve met. Not only can they actually teach, but they also have some great personalities too. They have that perfect balance of professionalism and playfulness that makes my experience as a whole a lot better. Also, this is literally the only year that I’ve actually learned proper grammar in English. Like that’s crazy. Overall, Middle College has been amazing and everyone here is just great. What do you like to do in your free time? I like to do what most boys do in their free time: play video games, watch movies, play my guitar, and hang out with friends. It all depends on what mood I’m in and how the day went. If I’m tired, I’ll normally sit at my desk to play something on my PC or something on my consoles. I literally play all genres of games, and it always fluctuates. If I’m like REALLY tired, I’ll just lay down and watch a good ol’ movie. If I’m feeling upbeat, I’ll practice and play my guitar. I’m alright at it, but nonetheless, I still love it. Hanging out with friends is when I just feel the need to be around people. It’s just a vibe that will just appear.

DRAGON FASHION

BY: DIEGO PEDRAZA

Now that we’re in second semester, keep the fashion going. I managed to cop a few pieces and accessories myself. This issue we have Riley Strong, from the Senior class, showing off his recent cops! For starters, he has a Hollister shirt under a dark navy blue, thrifted jacket. Matching the Hollister trend, he’s wearing a pair of washed denim jeans accompanied by some OG Nike Air Force 1’s. On top of all this, for an accessory he has an Off-White Diagonal Industrial Belt around his waist. Definitely letting it droop down his leg to flex on the haters. 4

DINING WITH THE DRAGONS BY KAREN NGUYEN VO

We are featuring Stockton’s newest bubble tea shop, Tea Daze. Tea Daze is a three-minute drive and ten-minute walk from Delta College. Upon walking into the shop, one can definitely notice a dark, club-like vibe, which the owner reaffirmed. Upon talking to the owner more, we learned that he opened up Tea Daze in Stockton because he realized that his target demographic—young foodies— exists here, but is often overlooked. To cater to as many young people as possible, he named the signature drinks based off of cultural references, and has non-Asian drinks, such as fruit slushies with Chamoy and Tajin. Nikaela ordered the “Bad and Boujee,” which is black milk tea with a layer of activated charcoal on top. Meanwhile, I ordered the “OreoTastic”, which is Oreo milk tea with puff cream and boba. The “Bad and Boujee” had a particularly fresh and crisp mouthfeel to it—like drinking fresh water—but the taste is a bit inexplicable. The “OreoTastic” tasted like your typical Oreo milk tea, although I did find that it felt too sweet to drink, after downing half of the cup. Overall, Tea Daze definitely caters to a specific young adult audience, so if you enjoy rap music and dark aesthetics, this could definitely be your next hangout place.

ALEXANDRA GREENLEAF BY: NIKAELA LLOSA

How was your first semester at MCHS? My first semester at middle college was really good. I liked being at a new school with new people- it was like a fresh start from middle school. What passions do you have? My passion is skiing. What do you do on your free time? In my free time, I like to hang out with my friends and family, travel, and go skiing in Incline Village. Have you traveled before? If so, which place was your favorite? I travel A LOT. I’ve been to Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, and the UK. I’m also going to go to France soon. I really like Venice. The water and the buildings are beautiful! What’s your favorite Netflix series? My favorite Netflix series is probably “Riverdale”, and my favorite Netflix movie is “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before”. 5

DEADLINE UNSOLVED: THE YOGURT SHOP MURDERS December 6, 1991 (Austin, TX) - At around 10 PM, Sarah Harbison, 15, and her friend Amy Ayers, 13, head off to see Sarah’s sister, Jennifer, at her work after a night of mall hopping. Jennifer, 17, worked along with her friend Eliza Thomas, 17, at the I Can’t Believe it’s Yogurt! shop down the street from the mall Sarah had been at. In the later hours of the night, firefighters responded to a fire at the yogurt shop. Once they had extinguished the fire, four bodies were found stacked on top of each other, and each was found shot in the head and burned beyond recognition. They later discovered that these were in fact the four girls, and the crime was so outrageous that they sealed the girls’ autopsy reports, something almost never done in Austin. Theories - Eight days after the crime, the police began to investigate Maurice Pierce, a teenage boy who was hanging around the same mall Sarah and Amy were at and had owed the same caliber gun as one of the two guns used in the murder. Pierce said that he and his two friends, Michael Scott and Robert Springsteen, had stolen a car that night and had driven to Dallas. However, he had loaned his gun to another friend that may have used it to murder the girls. The police didn’t believe them though, and, eight years later, the police arrested the three boys. Years later, the police further investigated the murders when they learned that the trials for the boys had been unfair. All three would be released when they found, through DNA testing, that they had nothing to do with the murders. The most popular theory now comes from the book Who Killed These Girls? by Beverly Lowry. She suggested that there had been two men in the shop that night when the store was closing. Due to protocol, the girls locked the front door ten minutes before closing and would later unlock it for the men to leave. The girls went about their closing routine and cleaned every table except one, the one the men had sat at. It is then theorized that one of the men went to the counter and ordered a soda and while one of the girls bent down to get it from the fridge, he pulled a gun on them. Since they locked the door, the girls would have nowhere to go, therefore sealing their fate. For twenty-eight years, December 6, 1991 has been known as “the day innocence died in Austin”, and the yogurt shop murders still remain UNSOLVED.

DUOLINGO BY: JEREMIAH REYNOSO Do you need help with your upcoming Spanish class or French class this semester? Maybe you want to learn a cool language, such as German or Italian, so that you can communicate with your foreign relatives, or maybe you might just want to learn a whole new language for fun! Welcome to Duolingo! This educational app features various short lessons for more than thirty languages. In the lessons, you learn different letters and words, and some lessons require you to speak into your microphone to check if you are saying a word right, which is super beneficial for pronunciation issues that you might have. You can monitor your progress in learning a language by checking the lesson number that you have reached. I have used Duolingo before, and I thought that it was pretty helpful for trying to learn another language. The first few lessons were extremely basic, but they eventually progressed into more complicated topics and ideas. I was really engaged into the app for about two weeks, but then I stopped using it. The app was helpful, but it got boring after a while. However, I personally think that this app can be a really convenient tool to use in order to learn a language, but it takes a lot of motivation (which I didn’t have because I tried this app by myself). You and your friends can compete to have the highest amount of points, and this makes learning a new language even more fun, so be sure to check this app out.

STAFF INTERVIEW: MRS. DUELTGEN

BY PATRICIA BAYONA

How has your overall experience at Middle College been? “Amazing. Students are great. I appreciate hard working students who try their best. It’s been a great staff to work with too. Also- I can encourage creativity, and I hope I allow students to be creative.” What do you do in your free time/ hobbies? “I have three kids. I like to read, watch videos like mainstream movies, independent movies, and Korean dramas. I like driving and going to concerts as well.” Why did you choose to be a part of film fest? What do you think makes it interesting to look into? “It was by accident at first, then I started to enjoy participating. I like to see students doing things that aren’t strictly academic. There’s a lot of amazing kids out there, and it allows them to shine. It’s also important to nurture and support the creative side of who we are. It’s a way to shine in another way other than academics. It’s a lot of work, but it’s fun. People should submit films, because you never know what someone’s going to like. Just put what you want out there, because it doesn’t matter what other people think as long as you like what you create.”

Dear Deadline, How can I deal with the loss of a loved one? -anonymous

Make sure you know what you want to run for and what it would take for you to be successful at the job. Depending on what you are running for, you may have to give a speech, campaign to your peers, or simply apply to be appointed. Regardless of what you are running for, make sure to consult the currrent person in your desired position. Do not be afraid to run against your friends. Last but not least, make sure you stay true to yourself, and find a way to make yourself stand out. —marinorthgoliathxxd

First off, I am very sorry for your loss. Secondly, losing someone you love is never easy. I lost my grandfather a couple years ago, and what makes me feel better is watching family videos of when I was younger and hearing his voice. Definitely keep your family member in your heart, and always remember the great times you had with him or her. This loss will hurt for quite some time, but after awhile the pain slowly goes away. —staystrongkeepgoing

Dear Deadline, How do I prepare for club elections as a potential candidate? —MroprahwestV

Middle College mixtape Every Issue, Deadline editors will interview MCHS students for songs that speak to them. The following songs are the highlights of this issue’s Middle College Mixtape. Visit our Instagram biography to get the link to the playlist on Spotify. Enjoy!

Amy Strempel

When the party’s over by Billie Eilish

I only listen to like 15 songs and this is one of them. Whenever I am looking for a new song to add to my short list, I look for a person who has a pretty voice and serious lyrics and she has both of those.

WENDY AMBRIZ NOT TODAY by BTS

I chose this song because it holds a special place in my heart. It was one of the two songs that I performed with when I first did the talent show, and I will never forget that. Not only that, it also has a really nice upbeat to it that always gets me excited.

REHMITVIR BATTH U Was At The Club by the Boyboy West Coast

I like to listen to small underground rappers, so I just wanted to promote his music so he can be like Drake one day and be big enough to play Fortnite with Ninja.

DARLENE KHOEUM I Miss You by Kim Bum Soo

I like this song because it’s about the artist’s past experiences with love and how much he misses this one girl. He sings about how he will never forget her and it hurts him because she is gone. When that time comes for me, I’ll probably feel the same

ISAIAH SISON

Say my name by David Guetta, Bebe Rexha

This song has a good beat and makes me feel powerful. I really love the singer’s voice and how it sounds. You guys should check it out if you want to have fun.
