{Meet the Deadline}

Isabella rocili

Hey everyone! In case you don’t know me, my name is Isabella Rocili, and I’m the Senior Editor of Deadline this year. Last year, I was one of the writers. One fact about me is that I absolutely love animals. I’ve also had a lot of pets in my lifetime. Currently I have two cats, Jake and Danno, and two rats, Johnny and Charlie. My dream is to have a pet tiger. Actually, I want to own a lot of animals that I cannot have. Some include a lion, a small monkey, a panda, red panda, and a koala. In the future, I plan to become a veterinarian, or possibly a music professor, since I love music history. Some hobbies of mine include watching Netflix and reading the book, A Dog’s Purpose, over and over again. I’m not very fond of reading, but when I find a certain book or book series that I love, I’ll read it multiple times. For example, Twilight — I’ve probably read that series about three times. Well, that’s enough about me. I’m super excited to be working with Karen and the rest of the Deadline team this year! Bye!

Hey MCHS Dragons! My name is Karen Nguyen Vo, and I am the Junior Editor for this year’s Deadline. A bit about my background: I was born on July 29, 2002 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and emigrated to California in April 2008. Within the past two years of being a Middle College student, I find that I’ve learned to “discover myself” here. Note to freshmen: join clubs! Being involved in clubs is really important in trying to get to know the people of our school, and I find that my experiences in clubs have helped shape me into who I am today. Speaking of clubs, you might see me working behind-the-scenes in Key Club, the California Association of Student Councils, and the Yesterday Again Film Festival. Less about school — I absolutely love listening to music. My music taste ranges from K-pop to Brian Imanuel to Honne.

2

If you see me around campus, please come up to me and say hi! Whether you want to talk about the newest edition of Deadline or just about your day, I’m all ears. See you soon, Dragons!

Campus Safety By Riley Strong

Originally reported by the Stockton Record, the Stockton Police arrested three men on August 29, 2018. They were arrested for alleged carjacking and attempted robbery. It was reported that the men committed three separate attacks. The first attack was at a man who was getting ready for work. As he was about to leave, the suspects approached the man, punched him in the face, and fled in his vehicle. Later on that morning, the suspects approached another man who was sitting in his vehicle on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. They intimidated him with a handgun and demanded his belongings. The third victim was approached while walking down Main Street. The three men aggressively demanded his money. The victim then ran into a building and was able to escape, despite the three men chasing him. Officers were then able to locate and arrest them. This situation resparks the topic of safety, especially in a city that has struggled with crime in the past. Luckily for students at Middle College High School, we have our own police station dedicated to protecting our campus, specifically here at Delta College. The police officers work hard to protect us, which makes Delta College one of the safest places in Stockton. Despite Delta being very safe in comparison to surrounding areas, by no means is it perfect. The most important thing to take away from reports such as these is to always be aware of your surroundings and take the safest routes, especially for those taking night classes. For those that are unaware, specifically freshmen, there is a messaging service provided by Delta Police that informs you of recent crimes in the area, known as ‘TipSoft. To sign up, simply go to the Safety Resources section of Delta’s website and follow their instructions. Everyone at MCHS is more than recommended to use this program!

JORDAN SUNGLAO BY JASON VO

Q1: What do you like to do in your free time? A1: I like to box and go on Reddit. Reddit takes about 3 hours of my day. Q2: If you had to choose a superpower, what would it be and why? A2: Teleportation, obviously. You could do anything in the world if you could teleport there. Q3: What is your favorite clothing brand and why? A3: CDG. A lot of people know the heart and it’s an expensive brand that doesn’t use big prints. Q4: What’s a bad habit that you have? A4: I like to spend my money as soon as I get it. Q5: What is one thing you would want to change about MCHS? A5: I would probably change the time schedule. I feel like we should cut the school time down so that we wouldn’t be out of school at 5 P.M. Q6: What would be your dream job and why? A6: My dream job would be owning a real estate monopoly over all buildings in the world. Everyone would have to buy from ME. Q7: What is one thing you would want to experience before you die? A7: Being in a coma. It doesn’t sound too bad to sleep for a long time. Q8: If you could trade places with anyone who would it be and why? A8: I would trade places with President Trump. He’s really rich and gets to be the president.

DRagON FASHIon by diiego pedraza

On August 16th — 20th on the online shop — Supreme released their Fall/Winter 2018 collection consisting of various garments and new prints. They also released another new wave of bags and accessories. One of the most sought out pieces from the collection would possibly be the “Dragon Work” jacket and pants. With its elegant embroidery and exquisite artwork, it was a must-buy for many fans. Since many orders are being received around this time, you’ll probably start seeing some items from the collection around Delta, and maybe even on students of MCHS. 4

DINING WITH THE DRAGONS BY REAGAN ANDERSON

Squeeze Burger is located in Lincoln Center across from Pieology and near Trader Joe’s. This places oozes of lumberjack hipster vibes with an industrial bar top and wood accents everywhere. The hipster vibes continue with the 90’s soft rock that flows through the restaurant. We ordered a barbecue chicken sandwich, a Squeeze with cheese, and a turkey Squeeze burger. I had the barbecue sandwich and it was okay. This sandwich had a problem where it was both too dry and too soggy at the same time. The bread was good but soggy, and the sriracha barbecue sauce was really good, as well. However, the chicken was dry and the grilled onions had a weird taste. I’ve eaten here before and I suggest getting the beef teriyaki sandwich — it is way better than the sandwich I had. My mom had the turkey Squeeze; she didn’t really like the turkey patty because it was “too peppery”. However, I found the patty to actually be pretty good. Then my dad had the Squeeze with cheese. He said it was good: not too big, not too small, and everything was cooked well. The “cheese skirt” tasted like cheezitz, in my opinion. The onion rings and fries were both really good. It was a little expensive, since our dinner was around $40. Overall, Squeeze Burger is a good restaurant that I strongly recommend, I just wish that their food had more consistency. 4/5 stars.

HANNAH LUGTUby jeremiah reynoso

Hannah Lugtu loves her stay at MCHS! She enjoys the friendly environment of the school, and she believes that the school provides her with a strong platform for her future. In her future, she aspires to become a veterinarian because her favorite field of science is Biology. She loves animals, and by becoming a veterinarian, she wants to help the owners feel secure about the health of their pets, and wants to help animals feel better about themselves. Hannah loves music. She enjoys composing her own music, especially on her ukelele and viola. Aside from playing her instruments, she also really enjoys singing, but she would not pursue a career in music because of financial insecurity. In her free time, she also likes looking at fashion. Her favorite style of fashion is streetwear, and she likes following along with fashion trends. 5

Abortion: A Searing Controversy

BY PATRICIA BAYONA The whole abortion topic has been argued about since the beginning of time. The first standpoint is supporting abortion, otherwise called “Pro-choice.” The second standpoint is the side that is against abortion, otherwise known as “Pro-life.” From the “Pro-choice” position, they believe that abortion is a fundamental right for women, and therefore empowers women to have control of their bodies. Meanwhile, “Pro-life” advocates have the opinion that abortion is murder and that life begins at conception. The “Pro-choice” advocates support their ideas by bringing the Roe vs. Wade case to light. They voice that women should be given the right of privacy, and especially vocalize that it is a woman’s choice to have children. They also reinforce the fact that when a fetus or embryo is aborted, they can’t feel pain, so it isn’t inhumane. The “Pro-Life” supporters carry their argument by stating that the killing of an innocent human is wrong, even if the human being has yet to be born. To contrast on the Roe vs. Wade case, the federal government has the Unborn Victims of Violence Act. This act says that anyone seen harming or killing an unborn child should be punished. They firmly believe a human individual is created with a unique genetic identity that remains unchanged throughout his or her life. This individual has a fundamental right to life, which must be protected. Both of these arguments are strong and I don’t believe there will be a middle-ground to it anytime soon. More information on this topic can be found at abortion.procon.org

SALIPHENA ALLIEU

BY KAREN NGUYEN VO Why did you decide to attend Middle College? I decided to attend Middle College because I thought it would be the best learning environment for me. I love people, but I don’t want to be around too many of them — like in a traditional high school. The classes in Middle College don’t have a lot of students, and we can actually talk to our teachers. What do you do in your free time? I really like doing gymnastics, reading, and going to the gym to exercise. I suck at dancing, but I want to try it out more. What do you want to get out of being in Middle College? You can’t survive alone. You need friends. That’s why I want to build good strong relationships with my peers and learn more about the different cultural backgrounds that MCHS students come from. I also want to be involved in things that get me out there, since school teaches you more than stuff in the classroom— it teaches you about the world and the 8 future.

BY KELLY SUTH The highly anticipated Crazy Rich Asians was released this month to theatres worldwide! Leading up to the premiere, there was a colossal amount of buzz surrounding this movie. The struggle for Asian representation in the Hollywood industry has been a winding battle, and many predicted that this movie would be the long-awaited victory that the Asian-American community has been waiting for. The plot centers around the American-born Chinese, Rachel Chu, who is dating the Singaporean-born Chinese, Nicholas Young, in New York City. They decide to travel together to Singapore to attend the wedding of Nicholas Young’s best friend. Once in Singapore, Rachel learns that Nicholas is actually the only heir to one of the most affluent families in Asia. At the core of the movie is a plain and simple romantic comedy — with the same beats and quips we’re all familiar with. Nonetheless, Crazy Rich Asians introduces elements to the romantic comedy that we have hardly seen before. It explores what it means to be the child of an immigrant and what cultural differences it fosters, as well as how American individualism can clash with other belief systems around the world. It paints a rich picture of the elite class of China and how it reacts to outsiders like Rachel Chu. In the end, the movie is about two hours worth of seeing Rachel stumbling through the world of the crazy rich Chinese and finding her own identity as she is faced with judgment, criticism, and intolerance. While it isn’t the most artistic and abstract movie we’ve ever seen, there’s no denying it’s a lot of fun.

Middle College mixtape Every Issue, Deadline editors will interview MCHS students for songs that speak to them. The following songs are the highlights of this issue’s Middle College Mixtape. Visit our Instagram biography to get the link to the playlist on Spotify. Enjoy!

JOANNE NGUYEN Unwind by Healy

I like this song because it is very vibey. It’s a nice song to listen to when the sun is rising or at night. The last time I listened to this song, my best friend and I were driving around town at sunset with the windows down and this song blasting. It’s soothing and has a nice beat to it.

MAIRA TUREEZ Coaster by Khalid

I connect to this song because the man I loved “wasn’t the one for me” I loved a man to the point where it hurt. Everyday felt like a roller coaster with him. But in the end, just like Khalid said, “he wasn’t the one for me” but still, I wanted him to be. And it still hurts because I still “see him in my dreams” but after 16 months of absolutely nothing, I finally feel special again and I have moved on.

MYLYNH NGUYEN Lost and Found by Jorja Smith

I really like the song “Lost and Found” by Jorja Smith because it starts off her album “Lost and Found,” which is her personal album that asks questions about life — but she doesn’t answer them. It kind of shows that seeking self-knowledge is something good, not bad.

RAIYA SO

Superhero by Lauv

I particularly enjoy the music video because of how much is going on. There’s the subtitles that describe his thoughts. There’s powerful dancing. Then there’s the music/lyrics themselves being played. It all comes together and there is so much to it.sthing good, not bad.

MICHELLE JIMENEZ Help by The Beatles

A song that’s meaningful to me is Help by The Beatles. The tune of the song is very cheerful and happy, but once you listen to the song closely, the lyrics are dark. I had depression a couple of years ago, and I can relate to the feeling of wanting to seem happy on the outside, but having trouble expressing my deeper thoughts. 11
