TIME IS NOW

Freshmen Advice by Mekhi Randle

Being a new student during this unprecedented time has to be hard, so I’m here to advise you on how to survive the year as a freshman!

to get adapted to the campus while it’s empty before college students are flooding the walking space. But this situation is new and different. I suggest making a mental map of your daily routine and memorizing that so that you don’t go to the wrong buildings like I did.

Tip #1: Be Grateful for ASC I personally didn’t have to do my first ASC day (or any of my freshman days in general) through Zoom. Nobody even knew what Zoom was back in 2018. But, I can promise you that ASC is no different throughout new students at Middle College. You might feel as if it’s useless or a complete waste of time. You might even feel as if you don’t need it, but it was one of the classes I can admit, looking back as a junior now, that I took for granted. This class was my only way of doing my homework and finishing everything I needed to do throughout the day without procrastinating. The class of 2022 had a little bit more freedom in ASC than other classes in the past might have had. But in the physical Budd 105 classroom, we had our quiet days where all of us collectively were on task and made sure we all finished our work before class started.

Eleven buildings are essential to Middle College exclusively. These buildings are Budd, Locke, Holt, Shima, SCMA, DeRicco, West Forum, Goleman Library, Bookstore, Warren Atherton Auditorium, and Danner Hall (Upper and Lower). When you’re hungry and don’t want school food, Danner Hall has a Starbucks inside from around 7:00 AM until 1:30 PM (hours may vary) and additional snacks and meals. There is a lot of seating in this cafeteria (indoors and outdoors), and I know that it is the prime freshman and sophomore hangout area. During a certain period at the beginning of the year, student chefs arrive on campus and cook “gourmet” meals. There is also a Mexican food truck that parks right between SCMA and DeRicco that makes some of the best Mexican food, and I honestly feel like everyone can attest to that. When you need a quick snack, there is also the Bookstore that is basically a convenience store, but you just replace the gas part with college textbooks and supplies. You didn’t hear this from me, but if you ask them for a “Middle College discount” at the register, they’ll gladly take 10% off your total.

Tip #2: How to Understand the Campus San Joaquin Delta College is a big campus. I remember my first week, I was absolutely confused about the layout of the school. Every Middle College student gets typically 3 weeks

Tip #3: College Class Life Hacks and Tricks

such as Key Club, where you actually see your classmates outside of school, can really help form bonds as well.

Being in a college class with a bunch of older people can be very intimidating at first. Some of them have zero clues about Middle College and will often stare if you look super young. But being on time and being respectful to your professor will automatically guarantee a good semester.

Tip #5: Middle College Culture There are a few unspoken rules of Middle College that most of you won’t know. I wish someone would’ve told me these because my first couple of days as a freshman would’ve been so much smoother.

When deciding what professors to take for a class, rely on a website called “Rate My Professor.” This website gives honest reviews about professors, including details such as their difficulty level, their manner in class, and if their tests are easy or hard. There’s not one class I’ve signed up for where I haven’t reviewed the professor and made sure they were the right fit for me.

First are assemblies. Most small school assemblies are held in the West Forum. This building is right in front of Danner Hall, and we usually wait outside if we’re early. Now, when we are let inside, there is a seating chart that we follow. On the left are sophomores. On the right are juniors. In the back are freshmen, and in front of the freshman are seniors. We follow this seating arrangement for school rallies too.

My last tip is making sure that you find people from Middle College who are taking the same class as you and become friends with them. This can help you if you need extra review before assessments or just someone to sit by in the actual course.

The rally is the most competitive time of the year for Middle College students. At the end of spirit week, an assembly is held in the Atherton Auditorium, where everyone is split up by class grade, and we put our voices together to create a loud commotion on who can be the loudest. On the day of the rally, you must wear your class color. Freshmen are gray, sophomores are white, juniors are red, and seniors are black. Seniors host the rally and, along with the rally, there is a talent show, which is the best part, in my opinion. It is a very entertaining hour and a half, and time will fly quickly. Freshmen usually don’t win their first rallies, but you have more people on your team now, so I will be excited to see how this plays out this year.

Tip #4: Making New Friends The class of 2024 is the biggest in Middle College history, being around ninety students. Every other class has had only around sixty students, making us a more close, tight-knit group altogether. I’m in the Class of 2022, and we all know each other pretty well now, but that may not apply for all of you. I suggest getting to know everyone, but that is pretty challenging, with classes being online. I personally feel like following back on social media and creating social media group chats can really help you when it comes to Middle College. Joining clubs and participating in school activities

I hope you all take my advice with a grain of salt, and hopefully, many more freshmen can use this useful advice I wish I had.

Freshmen By: Nora Meet Alexandra Carrilloz! Despite starting off online, how is Middle College for you? “The transition between middle school and high school has been a lot more laid back than I thought it would be. Getting to know some of the students attending MCHS makes things a lot easier and the teachers were very welcoming. The only challenging thing has been getting used to the new schedule and trying to figure out my college classes.” What is your favorite class so far? “At the moment, I think probably either biology or English. I really like biology because I’ve already had some experience with the teacher, and I also like English because Ms. Mason is really nice and the work that’s been given has been not too hard but has a little bit of a challenge.”

What are some of your hobbies? “Some of my hobbies include playing video games with my friends (that sadly go to different schools ) and I also play the cello. I’ve played for around 4 years and that’s a lot of fun.”

What was the last gift you gave somebody?

If you had the ability to time travel, would you rather time travel to the past or the future? Why?

“The last gift I gave someone wasn’t that important. It was a gift card for someone’s birthday… I’m kind of bad at giving gifts.”

“I would want to travel in the past because a lot of really powerful civil rights movements were going on that made history, and I really admire that. I just think it would be super cool to see that first hand.” 3

INTERVIEWS TAING Meet Chloe Xiong! Despite starting off online, how is Middle College for you?

“So far, Middle College has been treating me great. The only hiccups that I’ve had so far would be miscommunication between some teachers/professors, but overall they’ve been doing great.” What is your favorite class so far? “My favorite class so far would be AVID because Ms. Langone is pretty chill and her assignments do not stress me out as much.” What are some of your hobbies? “I only have a few which consists of listening to music, dancing, and writing. The reason why I like listening to music is because I found that I could connect to the music, which makes me calm when I’m stressed out. I like dancing because it’s another thing that takes all my stress away and for writing. I just find it very fun to do.” If you had a million dollars, what would you do with it? “I would probably invest in something to make more money so that I can help a lot more people around the world or some problems the world is facing right now.” 4

Where would you want to travel after COVID-19? “I would like to travel to Japan or South Korea because I heard that the scenery over there is very beautiful, and I would like to see it one day.”

Senior S

Jena T

by Daniell

Hey Dragons! As many of you may or may not know, Senior Spotlight is a segment our Deadline team created so that MCHS students can get to know our seniors well. In this issue’s Senior Spotlight, we interviewed Jena Tufail. We asked Jena what her hobbies are, her likes/dislikes, and what she is passionate about. Jena loves to read novels, listen to many genres of music, spend time with her birds, and more. During quarantine, Jena has caught up with her reading, and found a new hobby of sewing. Some of her favorite artists are The Neighborhood, Juice Wrld, Chase Atlantic, The 1975, Giveon, and Summer Walker (to name a few). If you need song suggestions, go to Jena because her music taste is immaculate. Some of her dislikes would be impatience and country music. She is passionate about civil rights and helping the wrongly convicted and detained. Jena has a goal of saving many people who face oppression in our world, and wants to make our society become a better place for future generations. “My goal is to one day take a stand and help aid in gaining minorities civil rights here in America and locally. I want to help those who are placed on death row for crimes they did not commit, and have been charged based on false, unreliable evidence. I want to be a part of changing our corrupt justice system one day, and making our country and communities better for everyone.” Jena’s plans after graduation are to attend university, graduate with her bachelor’s degree, and transfer to law school to pursue becoming a lawyer. The major she is applying to is Anthropology, which is the science behind the study of people and society. It took her awhile to find out what she wanted to study and major in. As of now, she is still deciding between the cultural or biological practice of Anthropology. But, it seems that she has found her true passion. 5

“Science has always interested me, studying humans as well, and aiding people has always been one of my goals. I believe that this major and career plan is perfect for me!” We asked her what she expects and hopes to accomplish during her senior year, and Jena wishes to accomplish many things during her last year. She hopes she will be able to graduate with her associate’s degrees, get into the colleges she dreams of attending, graduate high school, and to be happy. She has many expectations for how senior year would go. She expected for it to be more stressful, but so far, things have been going well for her. A lot of people, such as herself, thought that school would be held on campus, but that has changed as well due to unfortunate circumstances. She misses seeing everyone and being able to interact with her peers and teachers. We asked her how she has evolved over the years as a student attending MCHS, starting from her freshman to senior year. She says she has grown a lot over the years. Attending MCHS has helped her discover the field she is passionate about, Anthropology, and she wouldn’t have learned about this field if she didn’t go to MCHS. Her time management and independent study skills have improved as well. She has become more introverted, but it has served to be beneficial for her, as she is now happier and content with her life right now. “To be honest, I never knew I would be able to make it as far as I did and be able to make many new experiences I gained here at MCHS. Now, I am confident in who I am and becoming, I am excited about the future and my future endeavors.” Lastly, we wanted to know if Jena had advice for the underclassmen, and she provided a lot of insight. She says to not be afraid to try new things. There are many opportunities in school and outside of school, so don’t be afraid to seek new challenges alone. Another thing she has learned from MCHS is to focus on making everlasting friendships and relationships. Surround yourself with people who can help improve you as a person and give you positive vibes. Be yourself, know your worth as an individual, and don’t compare yourself with others. There’s no need for competition because everyone goes at their own pace and has different goals, so don’t be too hard on yourself. Do not be afraid to ask for questions or advice from upperclassmen and teachers. We are all here to help you out if you need any advice. “Work on appreciating yourself more in high school, learning your worth, and be happy with who you are becoming.” Thank you, Jena, for letting us know more about you, and we can’t wait to see you achieve your ambitions and dreams. We hope that you will flourish in your senior year and to be the best version of yourself. Feel free to talk to Jena because she will always be the right person to call for when or if you need help. 6

The Price Tag of Fast Fashion by Aashna Singh I have been constantly exposed to fashion and clothing; whether it be through the ForYou page on TikTok, random posts on Instagram, or browsing online retail stores like YesStyle and AliExpress. Recently, popular online retail stores, such as Shein and Romwe, are gaining traction. Because of the companies’ ability to surpass their competitors’ prices while also keeping up on the latest fashion trends—many people are buying them in hauls, or in large quantities. However, these companies depend on fast-fashion. Fast fashion is “an approach to the design, creation, and marketing of clothing fashions that emphasizes making fashion trends quickly and cheaply available to consumers.” Although fast fashion is allowing for fashion to become affordable and attainable, it comes at a great expense: it causes great damage to the environment and exploits unjust labor in third world countries.

The question arises, “How do these stores provide such low prices that seem too good to be true?” Fast fashion just recently emerged in the 2000s due to the consumers’ demand for wanting to wear the high-end designs displayed on the runways at Fashion Week events for a fraction of the original price. It became especially popular with more consumers willing to buy dupes. Retail companies, who are dependent on fast fashion, prioritize having a high stock of inventory for dirt low quality. Stores like H&M produce “hundreds of millions of garments per year... earning their profit out of selling an ocean of clothing.”

x

mer (SS) and Fall/Winter (FW). However, due to the mass production of clothes, the typical cycle now runs on at least one new clothing line every week, thus creating approximately 52 fashion seasons a year. This has caused the fashion industry to work at a rapid rate, working faster and faster by the season to create even more, with a competition between fast fashion and traditional fashion houses. The year-round calendar has caused clothing designs to become recycled because of the challenge of being creative and unique. It also has led to the appropriation of intellectual property from individual-owned businesses.

Prior to the emergence of As there is the mass profast fashion, the fashion indus- duction of clothes, the quality try typically created garments of clothing suffers. When retailfor two seasons: Spring/Sum- ers purposefully sell low-quality 7

clothes, clothes are designed to not last. Eventually, when clothes fall apart, people go back to get more clothes. As time progresses, this detrimental effect from consuming fast fashion contributes heavily to the environmental damage crisis. When these clothes are thrown out, they don’t decompose into the environment. Moreover, because the value of these garments is so poor, consumers are more willing to throw them out and fill their closets with the next better trend. This has caused an exponential increase in pollution. The pioneer of fast-fashion, Spanish retailer, Zara, is able to create over 18,000 designs a year. They are able to produce these designs in a span of 3 weeks. However, who is making these clothes? Companies who utilize fast fashion often outsource and exploit workers who are desperate for money. These companies provide little to no attention to their workers by: having unsafe working conditions, underpaying their workers to keep them tied to their jobs, and even going as far as exploiting children who have

no other place to turn to. To these workers, massive corporations are the devil in disguise, offering a deal that cannot be passed up and yet also forcing them to work in brutal conditions.

Extracirriculars to Participate in During Quarantine

By, Chau Anh Nguyen

F

rom the economic shutdown to the rising unemployment rate, the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has brought about many abrupt changes. Though by far not the worst effect compared to other pandemic-induced results, the virus has still significantly complicated various aspects of high school life for teenagers everywhere in the U.S., including—but not limited to—online learning, standardized testing, and college admissions. Though many of the extracurriculars (excluding school

clubs) that MCHS students regularly involve themselves in are unavailable as of right now, there are still many ways you can get involved in your community while simultaneously abiding by the CDC guidelines. With the 2020 presidential election coming up in a few months, by far one of the safest ways to be politically active during these uncertain times is through phone banking, a technique often utilized in many community campaigns to reach out to registered 9

voters via phone calls. From promoting political officials to advocating for specific policies, this process can be performed from the comfort of your own home. Phone banking opportunities promoting Proposition 15 (a recent bill focused on investing over twelve billion dollars in education and community programs, and eliminating a tax loophole that many corporations and wealthy investors benefit from) are incredibly prominent currently. Due to the conflicting information online concerning the bill, many California residents are conflicted over its implementation, with the opposition making up almost fifty percent of potential voters surveyed by recent polls. As a result, many committees, organizations, labor unions, and more have formulated numerous mobilization efforts to spur support for Proposition 15 and combat this issue. Some include the following: • AAPI FORCE Schools and Communities Phone Bank • APEN - Phone Banking (Chinese/ English) • Alliance SD SCF Text Bank • CoCo South L.A. Virtual Phone Bank Aside from phone banking, another way to remain active during quarantine is by participating in the Youth Climate Action Coalition, a youth-led organization focused on advocating

for environmental conservation. Their mission statement goes as followed: “The effects of climate change pose a pressing and urgent problem that the young generation faces in the near future. We must act now in order to have a better future. As a group of passionate high school students, we have stepped up to make a difference and have helped make our school more environmentally friendly. Through YCAC, we provide a platform for other schools and communities across the nation to do the same.” After filling out the application and joining, you can contribute to the organization’s missions by starting a chapter at your school and implementing the YCAC’s outlined plans to promote environmentally friendly systems and actions at MCHS. Lastly, the youth organization, The Medica Zone, offers many opportunities that help aspiring medical students prepare for their desired future careers. In addition to providing chances to obtain service hours, The Medica Zone also teaches weekly lessons on various medical-related topics and hosts virtual, informative Q&A’s with doctors that give insight into the health professional career. Future information, including their application, can be found on their Instagram handle (@themedicazone).

The United Arab Emirates and Israel Reach Historic Peace Agreement

I

n a historic move, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Israel have agreed to normalize relations between them. This includes full cooperation in business, tourism, travel, scientific information, and diplomacy. While this is a historic move as the UAE is one of the few Arab nations to normalize relations with Israel, this cooperation comes with its own issues, with the main issue stemming from the tense relationship between Israel and Palestine. Both want the same land and use religious and historical reasoning to justify their

claims. At the center of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the disputed capital of Jeruselum. Jerusalem is the capital of both Israel and Palestine as they both have holy religious sites located on the same land. This complicates things for the UAE as they must have a location for their embassy. This controversy follows the decisive move of United States President Donald Trump to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. 11

The largest advantage of the new peace deal is cooperation against regional threats in the Middle East, the largest threats being Iran and its proxy nations. Iran has held a very negative view of Isreal as the Muslim government of Iran believes that Isreal stole the holy land of Jeruselum from its rightful citizens. This hatred has caused Iran to support the proxy militias in the neighboring countries around Israel by providing funding and weapons. While this peace agreement is seen as a major step towards peace by the western world, it is also seen as a major setback for the Palestinians. The Palestinians have protested this move made by the UAE and branded them as traitors. Historically, the Arab nations of the Persian Gulf have come to the aid of Palestine as they are all Muslim nations, but this move has made the UAE an outcast. This new peace deal might be the stepping stone other Arab nations need to normalize relations with Israel, such as the nation of Bahrain. The Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called on other Arab nations not to normalize relations with Isreal. This new deal has forced Abaas to meet with opposing factions such as the leaders of the controversial organizations of Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

This deal has also been an “achievement” for the Trump Administration. The deal was brokered by Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior advisor Jared Kushner. President Trump has said this is a step towards peace in the Middle East, and he hopes other nations in the Middle East will follow in normalizing Israeli relations. He also hopes that this deal will allow Muslims from across the world to have better access to holy sites in Jerusalem. This deal will go down as a victory for the Trump administration especially during a tumultuous election cycle as President Trump faces allegations of voter obstruction. This new peace deal will go down in history as an achievement for both the Trump Administration and Israel. It is also a much-needed step towards peace in the Middle East as the region descends further and further into chaos due to Iran, Syria, and other militias and terrorist organizations. Depending on your views this deal is seen as either a step in the right direction or a large step backward.

Dining with Dragons

By Elizabeth Rocili

Sugar Mediterranean Bistro is a restaurant located in Trinity Parkway in Stockton. They have a lot of Mediterranean food including Gyros and Pita wraps. Additionally, they also have a lot of pastas and salads too. Sugar Mediterranean Bistro is open from 11 A.M. to 8 P.M. on Sundays through Thursdays, and from 11 A.M. to 9 P.M. on Fridays and Saturdays. They are open for outdoor dining, takeout, and delivery. However, since there is so much smoke and ash in the air lately, it is probably best to order food to go. I went to this restaurant with my mom and we ordered food to-go. We called in an order, and we did not wait too long for the food once we got there. It only took about 15 to 20 minutes to get the food once we ordered it on the phone. My mom ordered a Gyro with a Greek salad and I ordered the Chicken Alfredo. I am not a huge fan of Gyros. However, my mom really liked her food. The pasta that I ordered was pretty good, and it came with vegetables on the side that were also really delicious. Even though I could taste a lot of garlic in the pasta, it was still delicious. The chicken that was on the pasta was delicious! Personally, I think the food was a little pricey, but it was definitely worth it. Overall, I would give this restaurant a 4 out of 5 stars. The food was amazing, and I think that you guys should go there too. 13

Middle College Mixtape

by: Hieu Ho

It’s back baby! The Middle College Mixtape is a segment of the Deadline where we ask you guys to send us your favorite song. From there, we compile these songs into a playlist on Spotify called the Middle College Mixtape. You can follow our playlist here: @mchsdeadline on spotify! This was one of my favorite aspects of the Deadline during my sophomore year, and I was a little disappointed when it was taken out last year due to editing issues. But quarantine has brought some good things back, and that is the Middle College Mixtape. I was surprised to see so many people submit songs, and I am so grateful to everyone who did. I have honestly had the playlist on repeat ever since I made it. I think it is safe to say that Middle College is filled with people with good taste.

No Pressure

Logic

Logic announcing his retirement along with the announcement of his sixth and final album, No Pressure, threw his fans for a loop and certainly had me shed a single tear. The album has fifteen tracks and serves as a sequel to his album, Under Pressure which came out in 2014. “And very happy I am to be back in the United States and back on the network, even for so short a visit as this one. Back with old friends like No I.D. who is tonight’s director...” - No Pressure Intro (track 1)

One similarity between albums No Pressure, Under Pressure, and The Incredible True Story, is the appearance of the A.I. assistant, Thalia. Thalia serves as a virtual assistant who teaches listeners facts about the creation of the album and helps assist some characters in the album. Thalia appears in multiple songs in this album. “Anime such as Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Samurai Champloo, were in constant rotation during the making of this album.” - man i is (track 8) 15

With this being the sequel to one of his previous albums, this album is bound to have some song sequels in it. One of them being “Soul Food II”. The first first song of the Soul Food series appeared in October of 2014 on the Under Pressure album. Logic uses this album to sum up and end the stories of his discography which is very prevalent in this song. The first half of the song is Logic discussing how he has grown and changed as a person since 2014. “People scared of change, but you’ll find me deep in the cushion. Even when I win, it feel like I’m losing.” - Soul Food II (track 6) The second half of the song eludes back to Logic’s 2015 album, The Incredible True Story. This album was about a future where the human race has been almost completely wiped out. It follows Thomas, Kai, and Thalia as they are tasked with finding a new home planet called Paradise. “The year was 2115 at Babel Space Station, was home to the very last of the human population. The captain name was Thomas, the infantry man was Kai, And he’s the man that discovered the Ultra 85. Accompanied by a girl inside their ear, her name was Thalia, made of ones and zeros, she was a program. You could ask her any question even about the fall of man.” Soul Food II (track 6).

Logic also discusses how he spends his time now that he is retired, married, and has a baby son in the song, “DadBod”. While Logic does not have a dad bod at all, he does rap about no longer acting like a child and living a much calmer life than described in previous albums. Logic also brings up his anxiety regarding being approached by fans. “You want to hear about my everyday, I wake up, I wake my son up, then I feed him and lead him into his car seat. Drive up the street down to Target. Don’t do hard drugs or beat my wife, but the paparazzi still wanna start stuff. I don’t answer their questions, I leave ‘em in the dark…” DadBod (track 9) This album made me feel so many things.Logic explains why he is unhappy and has to retire from making music. He talks about mental health and how that it’s more important than putting out music. He goes over his insecurities and how people’s opinion of him has torn him down. Logic discusses that while ending a song with tons of punchlines is fun, it’s ok to be sad and tired. “Not black enough, not hood enough, not rich enough, not poor enough. My heart has poured enough. I been beaten and battered, my confidence shattered, been broken and tattered. I’m constantly second 16

guessin’ if my profession is worth it on my mental state.” Dark Place (track 11). If there is one song you’ll listen to after reading this, please make it the outro, “Obediently Yours,” especially if you aren’t a rap fan. This song samples an episode of the “Orson Welles Commentaries,” which is about a black veteran, Issac Woodard Jr., w ho was beaten

and blinded by a white police officer. This episode aired August 11, 1946. This sample discusses the responsibility of those with privileges for those without, defines race hate as a disease, and expresses an opinion on protests and riots. The title comes from Orson Welles explaining that with his fame and money, he must use it to help those who gave it to him in the first place, his fans. Welles says that he must serve those who give him the status he has and therefore he is “obediently yours”. “It being generally agreed that any public man owes his position to the public. That’s what I mean when I say I’m your obedient servant. We must, each day, earn what we own. A healthy man owes to the sick all that he can do for them. An educated man owes to the ignorant all that he can do for them. A free man owes to the world’s slaves all that he can do for them.” - Obediently Yours (track 15)
