Hey Dragons! For this latest issue we have the pleasure of introducing you all to the Class of ‘23! We interviewed a few freshmen, asking how their experience at MCHS has been so far and how they are adapting to the college and high school environment. They were all excited to experience taking college classes, meeting new people, and expanding their knowledge about the college system.

The freshmen were also enthusiastic about our school’s clubs. Most were looking forward to joining many of our clubs and possibly running for positions. One of the freshmen we interviewed, Jennifer Noyola, said, “I am very excited for the rallies, they seem to be a lot of fun from what I have heard and I can’t wait to see everyone showing school spirit.” This seems to be a popular and exciting topic among the freshmen.

We want to give a special thanks to the freshmen who agreed to participate in our interviews. You contributed greatly to this article and we genuinely appreciate your participation! Please, don’t hesitate to make new friendships, expand your horizons, and power through this new school year! As our own school’s motto says, “Be someone. Go somewhere. Seek excellence.” So Dragons, on that note, make sure to say hello to the freshman class of ‘23!

Middle College High School is constantly changing every year, from new teachers to the introduction of MyDelta. The transition from freshmen year to sophomore year is big, and many are excited about their newfound freedom. No ASC? The opportunity to sleep in more? A dream come true!

Sophomores can now also enter Locke Lounge, which they aren’t allowed to do in freshmen year. Many don’t give this new privilege much thought, though. Being restricted from the lounges last year, they found many comfortable and equally awesome places to hang out, like the seating areas outside the bookstore!

Instead of having Ms. England and Mrs. Langone as their AVID teachers like previous sophomores, the current sophomores have Mr. Arendsee and Mr. Fujimura. While different, the AVID classes fortunately seem to be moving along smoothly. When asked about Mr. Arendsee as an AVID teacher, Ferhawn Shaheenpi said, “I would say that he’s new, but he’s doing a pretty good job for someone of his experience. His assignments are pretty clear.” The same sentiments have been echoed for Mr. Fujimura.

Despite the new changes, sophomore year is looking to be fun and exciting!

JUNIORS

BY: Marina Balaga It’s the start of a new school year, and there are many fun and fresh things in store for the class of 2021. Due to the option of them able to go off campus and having two free periods, they can be seen in various places: getting boba, getting Dutch Bros, or even wandering around the mall. The possibilities are endless for the juniors, as long as they make it to class on time. One junior enjoying her newfound freedom is Chau Anh Nguyen who said that she is planning to spend her free period studying, getting food from Quickly’s, and visiting her friends from other schools.

More on the academic side of school, there are two major events for the juniors: the PSAT and SAT. The class of 2021 are able to take the PSATs this coming October on the 16th. The PSATs can be taken to prepare for the actual SATs that can be taken in the spring or during the summer. I asked Arlene Hickman about her view on the standardized tests. She responded, “Personally, I am excited and confident that I will score high on both tests.”

I also asked others what they’re looking forward to this school year. Nora Bakken stated, “I’m looking forward to becoming more involved in school and school events, and learning new things in the classes I’m taking.” Charlene Nguyen said, “I’m looking forward to the dances, especially prom and other school events.” Overall, the juniors are looking forward to what is in store this school year. I, along with the junior class, wish everyone an exciting and prosperous 2019-2020 school year.

CULTURE CLUB

KEY CLUB The Greek Festival took place at the St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church from September 6th to 8th. There were multiple shifts that members could choose from ranging from morning to evening. There were about 10 members per shifts for four hours. “The people there were very friendly. All I did was regulate the parking and drink Greek coffee,” said Kienlac Mai, a junior at Middle College. The shifts only allowed for members to work in the parking lots, guiding guests to parking spots.

After working long hours, many Key-Clubbers needed a pick-me-up. Personally, The Greek coffee is one of the best things to get at the festival if you enjoy coffee. It just hits a little differently.

Key Club members who volunteered received free food vouchers and got to taste new Greek foods that they hadn’t tried before. Sebastian Flores, another junior, said “I guided people to parking spots, and I had a fantastic time, but it was also difficult.” I highly recommend this event for other members next year But make sure to sign up quickly! This event is very popular which makes it very competitive to get a spot!

Recently, Culture Club covered a Greek activity that will lead us into the Greek Olympics. The Greek Olympics is an annual event held by Culture Club after the first month of school. The Greek activity that was played is called tsourgrisma (TSOO-grees-mah); it is a traditional Greek Easter game that symbolizes Christ’s resurrection from the dead and birth into eternal life. The game started off with eggs that were dyed red. In order to play, two partners would each need an egg.

The purpose of the game is to crack the eggs by tapping it on top of the other egg. The egg would have to be cracked on all sides.

After the first egg is cracked, the second egg is tapped on top of the first egg. Kienlac and Nora T. had unbreakable eggs and ended up playing with each other. In the end, Nora’s egg broke. If you didn’t have a chance to participate in the Greek activity, be sure to stay tuned for the Greek Olympics coming up!

MCHS NIGHT MARKET BY: Charlene Nguyen

Club Fest took place on September 13 and there was a big turnout! There were a lot of fun activities and events that had taken place. Members of the student government and of other clubs really worked hard decorating Upper Danner and set the tone for it to seem like a night market!

Every club had different activities, and they were all unique and matched the club in their own way.

With a ticket system this year, they were able to offer different things.

Culture Club sold food of different cultures and even hosted a fashion show showcasing traditional clothing from different regions. Key Club had sold drinks like boba and horchata, and even offered metal straws to buy! Some of them were holo as well. Table Tops had offered shaved ice and even games that allowed you to win stuffed animals! Art Club had an entire table full of art activities like calligraphy and henna designs. Politics Club had a game show and MESA had their own little trivia game!

There were also VR games, ping pong, and chess!

Near the end of the night, Dance Club had offered an amazing series of performances! There were so many different groups and the variety had really brought the night together! Overall, Club Fest was a huge success with how much support they had received for the event. Maybe next year will be even better!

Lotus Thai & Khmer Cuisines

I decided to check out this combination of Thai and Khmer cuisine at a relatively new restaurant. I don’t really see that many Khmer ( cuisine restaurants around Stockton, so I was very excited to try it out! Lotus Thai & Khmer Cuisines is quite small, and the decor is aesthetically pleasing. What charmed me most is the beautiful lotus wall at the very back of the restaurant. It’s practically the first thing you notice when you walk in!

My special guest, David Pham, and I ordered noodle dishes that seem to be what many regulars order when they visit. I ordered the Seafood Noodle Soup ($8.95), and he chose the Thai Beef Boat Noodle Soup ($8.95). The Seafood Noodle Soup includes a pork based broth similar to the Phnom Penh Noodle Soup recipe from Cambodia. The only difference was that this noodle soup had seafood toppings such as shrimp and imitation crab meat. The Thai Beef Boat Noodles had a strong aroma and it was definitely flavorful as well. The broth tasted a lot like Hoisin sauce and it is dark in color too. As for the drinks, we got iced Thai tea which were only $2.50.

In conclusion, we were pretty satisfied with our meal.

The broth in both soups were very tasty, and there were a handful of toppings. I noticed that in the noodle soups, we were given a large amount of noodles, which is something that I find pretty overwhelming. The thing that surprised me the most was the thai tea. It. Was. So. Good. I’m not going to lie, but I would rather get my thai tea for cheap here than going to a boba place. The sweetness and that tea flavor ratio blew me away!

As for my personal rating, I would give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars! The menu seemed to have plenty of other authentic Thai and Khmer cuisine ranging from Thai Chicken Cakes (which are really good) to Khmer “Mee Kathang” (a classic).

The staff was really nice, and we did not wait long for our meal. Overall, I suggest checking this place out to try out food from these cuisines!

MOVIE REVIEW Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw

Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw is a spin-off the wildly popular series Fast & Furious. I had never seen a Fast & Furious movie before watching this film and was worried I wasn’t going to be able to follow the plot, but that was not the case. Hobbs & Shaw is a movie that succeeds on almost all aspects; each joke, character, and action scene make the film worth watching again and again.

Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, in previous films, have not gotten along and don’t work well together. Now, however, they are paired together to work against Brixton Lorr, the antagonist. Lorr is a cybernetically enhanced (enhanced using electronics and machinery) ex-soldier who plans to make the rest of the human race just like him. His goal is to wipe out half of the human race. Of course, Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw cannot let that happen.

The two unlikely allies, alongside Shaw’s estranged sister, have to put their differences aside to save humanity yet again.

Overall, I really enjoyed watching Hobbs & Shaw and recommend it if you like action movies. I think that this is a good first Fast and Furious movie if you want to get into them without having to watch nine movies beforehand. My favorite part of this film had to be the surprise appearance of Kevin Hart. I was not aware he was in the movie and he definitely lightened the seriousness of the movie. I hope to see a second installment of this spin-off in the near future.

Recently, the wildfires in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil have hit the world stage—and of course Twitter. Umair Irfan, a writer for Vox, wrote the Amazon Rainforest is commonly known as “the world’s lungs” because of its ability to produce oxygen while storing carbon dioxide. In recent years, wildfires in Brazil have increased by about 80 percent, reports Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE). The alarming increase is worrisome because the Amazon usually does not burn on its own. Currently, it is not known how the fire was started. The rainforest is too wet to ignite, thus experts point to human activity to have caused these major fires. Fires started by human activity are detrimental in rainforests like the Amazon because they are teeming with biodiversity and provide oxygen for the rest of the world, according to Rhett A. Butler, author of The Importance of the Amazon Rainforest. Some experts believe that deforestation is also a major contributor to the spread of the flames.

It is known that the Amazon rainforest is teeming with life. There are many different plants, animals, and other living organisms. Natasha Daly, writer for National Geographic, writes “ten percent of Earth’s animal species live there.” She believes that the effects of the fire will bring immediate and long-term consequences. The Amazon rainforest species are not adapted to fires. Across the United States, wildfires can be essential parts of ecosystems.

Personally, I do believe there are “rules” to photography; however,I also believe that all rules can, and sometimes should be broken. Note: Someone who greatly inspired me once said (and I paraphrase) “Take this with a grain of salt, because I am only as talented as people take me to be.” Photography is all about capturing a moment. First day of school? Capture the memory. Find an aesthetic plant? Go for it! Taking a hike?

Snap snap snap! Photographs truly express more than a thousand words could, but I think there are a few things every aspiring photographer should learn and/or know.

Bare with me, please. I promise understanding exposure is immensely useful. Images can either be underexposed, overexposed, or properly exposed. To most people, this image is “too dark”. This image is “underexposed” (1). Here, the sun is “too bright”. The image is “overexposed” (2). Of course capturing a photograph is what the photographer envisions it to be, but this means relying a lot less on the camera and more relying on his or her own knowledge. Exposure relies on three parts: shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, and is measured using the camera’s light meter.

Light Meter and Metering Modes

This is an internal light meter (3). All digital cameras have light meters, so don’t worry about having to run out and buy one like people had to do when film was around. The first meter is an example of what a properly exposed image would be. The second is what an overexposed image would be. Lastly, the third meter is an example of an underexposed image. Ideally, people aim for the first meter, but, despite what I just said, light meters are not always correct. For example, if the sun is behind your subject, the meter may say the image is overexposed, but after taking the photograph, the subject is too dark.This is where different metering needs to be accounted for. Switching from brand to brand, the different metering modes may have different names, but with a quick search, it is easy to determine which mode is which and what mode does what (4). Now, the different metering modes allow the camera’s light meter to measure different light sources. Imagine shooting your subject with the sun behind them again. Changing the metering mode from one mode to the other allows the light meter to measure the light coming from the middle

of the sensor (where your subject may be) rather than a sum of all the light being reflected onto the meter (the sun is overexposing the image). Metering is very useful. Of course I know this all seems very dense, but I hope to have shed some light on a subject that I believe to be of utmost importance. Now, onto the stars of the article: shutter speed, aperture, and ISO.

Shutter speed

Put simply, shutter speed affects motion blur. “How does it do that?” is probably what you are not asking yourself, but I am going to tell you anyway. The shutter speed is how quickly the mirror (that reflects your image into your camera’s viewfinder) 5

releases to expose your sensor (what captures your image). Now, in the old days, the mirror of cameras released to expose the film creating an exposure, or photograph—not that you care, but now you know hehe. How quickly the mirror releases is measured in seconds, ranging from bulb (which indefinitely flips the camera up until you release the shutter button) to 1/4000 of a second—the fastest shutter speed for most beginner DSLR cameras. The longer the mirror is “opened” or flipped up, the more exposed your sensor will be. Now, back to motion blur.

Look up right now at the people moving around you. Start blinking as fast as you can. What do you notice? Everything seems to be moving slower, one frame at a time right? Shutter speed works the same way your eyelids do; the faster the mirror releases, the more still your image will be—reducing image blur. Now, consider you see a cyclist riding toward you. What do you want to capture? Do you want a completely still frame of a cyclist? Probably not. There really is no story to a still cyclist, right? For this, a shutter speed that shows some motion blur is ideal. Take this image for example (4). The subject here is obviously moving, and though there is also motion blur from my moving the camera, a still image would not have given off the same vibe.

One word: bokeh. It’s pronounced either “boe-kay” or “boe-keh” as far as I know, but regardless of whether you knew the term or not, bokeh is that (sometimes) beautiful, creamy background we all want in portraits—hence phone companies’ “portrait modes”. If you do not know what I am talking about, where have you been? If you kind of do but still are not totally sure, here (6). Notice what is sharp and what is not. Aperture affects the depth-of-field of images.

Aperture is measured in “f/ stops”, ranging from f/.95 to f/22. The lower the f/ stop, the “faster” it is, and along with that, the shallower the depth-of-field. Having a shallow depth-of-field creates the blur everyone loves, but the faster the aperture the more perfect your focus has to be. Shallow

depth-of-fields mean more room for mistakes, but many 7 would argue the creamy results are worth it. Now, how does aperture relate to your eyes? Think about visiting your optometrist. Have you ever wondered why they shine a bright light into your eyes. It is to check your pupils! Constriction of the pupils means that they are getting smaller to allow less light into your eye. Dilation of your pupil means more light is being let into your eye. Aperture works the same way. Within your camera lens are aperture blades that dilate and constrict to allow more or less light to reach your mirror and then sensor.

BAD BOKEH Now, I previously put a “sometimes” in parentheses. I say that because, sorry to break it to you, but not every image needs to be at the fastest possible aperture. Take this for example (7). Notice that the closer subject is like sharp sharp, but the subject in the background is not. The fast aperture created a shallow DOF allowing only (in this case) the closer subject to be in focus. Everybody loves creamy bokeh, but do not go overboard with the cream.

ISO

The most, just kidding, the only artificial of the three (Note: After researching and practicing, I have found that ISO is technically useless because a photographer can shoot without adjusting ISO at all and produce properly exposed images while editing. ) Now, how does ISO relate to your eyes? It really does not unless your eyes are more or less sensitive than they should be. ISO, in its more modern form, is the multiplication of light. I used the term “artificial” because I would compare ISO to adjusting the brightness of an image in post—editing. Unless my lighting situation has changed, I change ISO after I have reached my desired shutter speed and aperture. Reaching an ISO beyond 800 usually leads to noise. See here (8). This is the underexposed image from before, edited. The “noise” is the fuzz that easily noticeable on the subject’s face and hair. Noise reducing image quality, so I always recommend trying to stay away from high ISOs. 8

Each of these three work in conjunction to create properly exposed images. Together, they create the exposure triangle. When an image is properly exposed, there is no adjusting one without affecting another. For example, I am shooting a subject outside. My shutter speed is at 1/125 of a second, my aperture is at f/8, and my ISO is at 100. My light meter indicates that my image is properly exposed, so I snap the photo. I notice that the background of my image is as sharp as my subject. Gasp! I do not want that; I want that nice creamy bokeh. How would I fix this? Well, I would like a faster aperture, so I open my aperture to f/2.8. However, my light meter now says my image is overexposed. I now have to adjust my shutter speed to 1/1000 of a second.

Learning all of this took about a year for me. I gained a rough idea, however, in about a day. I know this all seems like A LOT to take in at once, but I do hope you found any part of it to be informative. Thank you for making it this far if you did. I absolutely love photography if you couldn’t tell already, but I am totally not the only photographer at our school.
